THE workers who “stood by sugar” during the dark days of the estate closure when hundreds of them lost their jobs and retreated to the breadline, were on Saturday reassured by President, Dr. Irfaan Ali that no effort will be spared in making the industry viable, sustainable, and resilient once again.

Directors, managers and workers of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) were able to meet and interact with President Ali and a number of his Cabinet ministers at the Rose Hall Estate in Canje, East Berbice-Corentyne.

The re-opening of the Rose Hall Estate was among the manifesto promises of the People’s Progressive Party after it (estate) was shut down in 2017 under the previous government. The atmosphere on Saturday

was therefore rife with hope and positivity, and a renewed drive in moving this particular estate forward, especially in the context of the deplorable state that it had descended into.

“When the first set of videos and photos came to Cabinet of what we are inheriting (at Rose Hall estate), there was a deafening silence in the room,” President Ali recalled, as he noted how equipment worth billions of dollars were left in the fields to rot, and how the once beautiful, green cane fields converted to sheer forest.

“We are going to invest in the training and conditions of your work.

We will be first to acknowledge that you [the workers] must get better, and we will do everything to ensure that you get better. We will not neglect you,” Dr. Ali promised, adding, “I assure you that

we will open back sugar.

We will give you more; we will give more back to the workers. Our sugar workers are valuable to us.”

He continued: “We are going to make the investment to keep your jobs, keep your families, keep your communities, and keep sweet, sweet sugar.

It is an important part of our 25 by 2025 plan. I salute the managers and the workers who stood by sugar and I applaud you.

“Before the setting of the sun today we will surpass our last-year production.”

One of the Rose Hall workers who has so far given 26 years of service, Winston Bhownoth, was happy at President Ali’s pronouncements, and shared how after a long time of closure, people on the breadline have finally been given back their jobs.

“Canje will be back on full stream and everyone in this community will be happy,” he posited, noting, “I was out of work for the whole period that the estate was closed; now, there’s a feeling of elation.”

Noel Baker, of Number 19 village, another Rose Hall worker who is happy at getting back his job, praised the managers of the estate whom he said did a lot of work in ensur-

ing that the factory was run efficiently.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha recounted how families were negatively affected when the estate was closed and how President Ali had argued for a social-impact economic report to be done.

“Today is a very historic day for us at Rose Hall.

This is the first time His

- President Ali blasts regional officials for slothful pace of Mara’s advancement

FOLLOWNG several complaints by residents of Mara, Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne), President, Dr. Irfaan Ali blasted regional officials for the slothful pace in works.

On Saturday, the President met with citizens of the community and provided an open platform for them to voice their concerns.

While some folk lauded the facelift that Mara is undergoing, several

residents informed Dr. Ali that they were not satisfied with the progress of road works and drainage and irrigation within the area.

Drawing attention to the $100 million expended to improve roadways in the area, Dr. Ali expressed complete dissatisfaction with the rate at which operations are being carried out.

In 2021, the Head of State committed to investing $100 million

to construct six kilometres of asphaltic road in Mara. Noting that resources are being expended to ensure that citizens have a better quality of life, the President stated that it is disappointing to hear that engineers are dragging their feet on the job.

While scolding the regional engineer, President Ali firmly asserted: “I told [all of you] that we will hold people accountable in this place.”

Furthermore, with the engineer claiming that he visited the community, the President demanded a report, which he (the engineer)

could not present. “…You’re the engineer and you went to visit the area and you don’t even have a report of the visit?” Dr. Ali questioned.

Also, the President scolded other regional officials for their failure to act on these issues.

“Let me be very clear to you, I’m very disappointed with [the pace] of the road [works]…

“I’m going to change the system; what we will do [is], when we go back, we’re going to get some of the regional contractors to come in for a meeting and see a new approach

to get it done because I am dissatisfied with the engineer…there is absolutely no excuse for the speed at which they’re doing the road,” the President asserted.

He added, “We are cautiously pleased with the advancement on the road but very disappointed, like the residents, in the pace at which the work is being done. We have made the resources available and it is totally outrageous, the pace at which the work is being done...”

The project began in March 2022; it was executed by the ministry’s Special Projects Unit, and saw four miles of road rehabilitation being done, stretching from Germania to Kaiwa.

Meanwhile, following a concern expressed by an elderly man on pension payments not being done in Mara, but instead in New Amsterdam, the President grew furious as to how officials are not following standard procedures.

“Let me tell you something, somebody should be fired because we have a policy: the pension must be paid in villages,” he said.

While acknowledging the challenges being faced in the community, the President reminded the re s i d e n t s t h a t t h e People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government is committed to enhancing the community.

MINISTER of Public Works Juan Edghill on Saturday revealed that all works have been suspended on ‘Red Road’ after more ‘movements’ were detected by the contractors working there.

Repair works started immediately on a section of the road at Providence, East Bank Demerara (that leads to the Amazonia Mall) after the road caved in under the weight of 30,000 tonnes of aggregate that were stockpiled next door at the parking lot of the national stadium on Thursday.

“We started by excavating all of the unstable materials, then we went deep enough to ensure that we reached

solid clay. When we reached the solid clay, we started to put sand to compact, after which we would have put loam, then crush and run, and finally pavement.

“However, while we were compacting the sand, we started to get additional movements, which caused the engineers to move to the next level, which is to do geotechnical studies,” the Public Works Minister told the Sunday Chronicle during a telephone interview.

Once the report from the geotechnical studies is analysed, only then would the authorities be able to decide the way forward.

“We have done the

boring for the geotechnical studies today (Saturday); we went as deep as 24 metres, and that analysis is being studied, and by Monday, we should be able to get the results. After we see the results on Monday, only then will we be able to determine what needs to be done going forward.”

Edghill is optimistic that the data collected for the geotechnical studies will be able to help “us better understand the way forward.”

“We are very much aware of the commercial properties that are

in that specific area, and as such, we have to study what is happening there. We cannot just fix the road and leave it; because it has to be fixed, we are now looking at the movements of the soil, and we have to await the results of the studies.”

Because of the scale of the work involved, the Public Works Ministry is unable at this time to provide an estimated cost for the work.

Meanwhile, the technical report that was submitted to the ministry confirmed that

the road was indeed damaged because of the stockpiled aggregate exceeding the shear strength of the foundation soil directly beneath it.

As such, the government quickly moved to reduce the aggregate by distributing it to con-

tractors.

Meanwhile, Minister Edghill is also pleading with the general public to desist from using that area as much as possible until the issue is rectified. (Cindy Parkinson)

Mining Lies!

Guyana Manganese Inc. (GMI), operating out of Matthews Ridge and with offices in Georgetown, is breathing life back into the manganese industry that Guyana was once proud of, but which almost died a slow death over the past several decades, thanks (in the main) to the inability of the state to attract investors to pump-in the money needed to save it.

Up comes GMI, which invested the required capital to give life-support to the industry and create employment in the North West District between Port Kaituma and cargo ships at the mouth of the Waini River, in the process and along the way

providing employment and enabling previously-unemployed citizens in the hinterland areas concerned to also earn a living.

But no sooner the industry starts looking like it has come off life-support to start walking again, up comes the usual baseless and politically mischievous criticism by mindless suspects who seem bent on shooting-down every bright star that appears on Guyana’s horizon under this administration.

Like GMI, we will not here repeat the utterly ridiculous claims in the volumes of allegations unsupported by facts, but the company has been forced to defend itself through a press release.

In this (latest) case, GMI was able to nail the writer’s claims with clarifications he and his outlets could have had, if only they were interested in finding the truth. But instead, and with all but truth on their minds, the writer, publishers and broadcasters concerned all preferred to air and print fake claims, without any effort to get the facts from the company, whose telephone, e-mail and others communication numbers and addresses are available to all.

GMI naturally viewed the latest publication of untruths about its operations as “an orchestrated attack on our company,” also noting, “In fact, Kaieteur News has in the past written several

derogatory articles about GMI without seeking clarification or comment from the company.”

The company has correctly taken a position to “not lend any credence to these articles, as they were based on falsehoods” and expressed its hope that its clarifications will “bring some clarity to this issue and expose Kaieteur News and Mr Lall’s lies.”

But what Guyana has learned and GMI may only now be finding out, is that it’s up against persons and their media outlets that prefer to specialise in fabrication instead of verification and will stop at nothing to mine new lies when old ones fail

to yield expected returns.

Characters who’ve failed by all other means to attract attention of citizens and voters through lies and misrepresentations are now only using new tools for the same old purpose of encouraging people to take them seriously when they say black is white.

If one listens to the same usual suspects, Guyanese will have nothing to benefit from highway upgrades or major improvements in any sector, as long as it’s done under a PPP/C administration.

Obviously, that’s not the view of the majority of Guyanese voters and citizens, which is why they

can only win ‘nice’ votes on Facebook, from those who don’t face the realities on the ground and can be easily misled by garbed and garbled performances by would-be election candidates who know they simply can’t attract votes from Guyanese, the majority of whom live the truth and can see and smell the lies from afar.

As such, the online propagandists of disinformation are destined to continue trying new ways to achieve their old and elusive dreams of influencing Guyanese to think and act against their interests. Sad for them, those days are long gone!

President Ali is on a mission to modernise Guyana

Dear Editor, In just three short years, President Dr Irfaan Ali has proved that he is an influential and dexterous leader and his leadership skills have been recognised not only at home and in the diaspora or in the Caribbean, but in Latin America and throughout the world.

By now, it should be obvious to everyone that Dr Ali is committed to building a new and prosperous Guyana so that all Guyanese can prosper and live a happy and comfortable life. Predicting that he will be re-elected in 2025, an exuberant President Dr. Ali promised to work tirelessly over the next seven years to make sure that by 2030 and beyond, Guyana will become digitised, its gross domestic product (GDP) will be among the highest in the world, and its economy will be sustainable, resilient, competitive, and diversified.

He urged the people to end their petty grievances

and worn-out dogmas of the past that for far too long have hampered the political system, disadvantaged, and weakened the resolve of the people, and stifled the development of the country. He pleaded with Guyanese at home and in the diaspora to mend their differences and support his government in its efforts to modernise the country and make it a better place where every can have a bright future and live in harmony.

President Dr. Ali is confident that in the next few years Guyana will bolster its position as a world leader on the international stage on some very important and significant issues such as climate security, energy security, food security, fair trade, and human rights, among others.

According to the President, the government will invest heavily in infrastructure, agriculture, education, health care, tourism, especially eco-tourism, but most

importantly in human development and social services with the aim of changing the attitude, culture, and behavior of the people.

Faced with a huge backlog of over 5,500 passport applications from persons at home and in the diaspora, President Dr. Irfaan Ali did something no other president had done. He announced via social media that officials in the passport office will work twenty-four hour shifts to end the enormous backlog in seven days.

This is not the first major problem that His Excellency has solved since taking office. After constant complaints from several residents that the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) has been extremely slow in processing their applications for them to receive their benefits, President Ali instructed the NIS to establish a special Secretariat to handle the more than 10,000 queries and resolve them by the end of the year.

It shows that the Presi-

dent understands these ongoing issues and problems that are frustrating the working class and is not afraid of the challenge to solve them. In fact, he grabs at every opportunity to meet and greet the people in the various villages and districts and resolve their problems, regardless of their status, ethnicity, or party affiliation.

Regionally, as the Head of State, President Dr. Ali continues to lead CARICOM’s campaign to increase agriculture production and reduce its food import bill by 25 percent by 2025 as well as Guyana’s drive to become a global leader in food production and security.

He asserted that Guyana is an extraordinary strong partner in expanding its agricultural food systems to meet the goals of food security in the region and beyond. His advocacy and leadership in food and energy security, agricultural transformation, and for building resilient and sustainable economies in

Guyana and the Caribbean, coupled with his unwavering commitment and support for regional integration, gender equality and respect for sovereignty and the rule of law all of which are central to the IICA’s work, earned him the prestigious Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture award (IICA) at the Inter-American Conference in Costa Rica.

Presented to him by the President of Costa Rica, Mr. Rodrigo Chaves Robles, President Ali is the first Head-of-State to receive this esteemed award from the institute, which provides cooperation services through close and permanent work with its 34 Member States in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

In expressing gratitude to the IICA for the award. President Dr. Irfaan Ali stated that Guyana will work with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture to develop and establish a technological food hub for

the entire region to ensure adequate food supply for the people.

The Head of State affirmed that his government is positioning Guyana to become a major destination for eco-tourism, and he will collaborate with the President of Costa Rica to help develop eco-tourism as a product in Guyana. Both leaders have agreed to cooperate on issues of the forests, environment, climate change, and energy and food security for the region.

It should be clear to all Guyanese far and wide that under President Dr. Ali’s leadership, Guyana is destined to become a country known for innovation not only in the production of food or the oil and gas sector, but it will acquire the best technology in the 21st century. We should all be proud of his commitment to make Guyana a prosperous country.

The question ‘Bill Cotton’ asked of me MANY people in and out of Guyana would know there is a Caucasian-born Guyanese who lives in the UK by the name of John Mair that uses the pen name, “Bill Cotton”.

Mr. Mair sent me an email last week with the following question, “The keep it in the ground tendency. Who are they and what are their motives?”

In my ongoing work, I refer to the “keep it in the ground tendency” as the anti-oil lobby (AOL). I start with a heartfelt appeal - all Guyanese in and out of this country must be patriotic and welcome the oil industry, and to see it the way Professor Clive Thomas has described it - an opportunity at last (yes, he used those two words) for Guyana to make a big dent (my two words) in poverty.

AOL has a mentality that is inimical to the complete national interest of this country, and I would urge citizens to see these people as enemies of freedom and progress. The AOL is a grotesque manifestation of an ugly mind.

One thing is certain in discussing the fossil fuel industry in Guyana, there is no political party, no trade union, no farmers’ group, no

cooperative society and no working-class organisation that has rejected the oil industry.

They would not do that for one basic, commonsensical reason; their raison d’être depends on Guyana having an assured source of income.

The AOL has several dimensions. I will deal with only two here. The first section is a group of highly middle-class elitist people whose lives are not and will not be affected by a poor economy in this country. These people have financial resources, and have used it to employ high-priced lawyers in eight court cases against the oil industry. These are millions that could have been used to help charitable organisations.

One member of AOL, as I wrote in a recent column, celebrated his birthday with a free dinner and dance event at the Pegasus, followed up the next night with another celebration at Theatre Guild, and is building a $700 million business head office.

This group is a westernised cabal that apes bourgeois organisations in Western countries that crusade against the fossil fuel industry. Ignorance of how wealthy are the coun-

tries these bourgeois folks live in and the high income they enjoy makes the AOL in Guyana a repugnant set of people.

The AOL in Guyana is not really anti-oil when you do deep analysis of their motives; the AOL uses the oil industry to mask their political agenda. They want to weaken the PPP government, because they do not want the PPP in government, and this has to do with class and cultural contempt.

The best strategy they feel that can appeal to people is to go on the roof top and shout out that big foreign corporations are raping Guyana. This anti-imperialist cry is an ironic comicality, because every expatriate Guyanese in AOL has worked, or are working, in institutions in powerful countries that are large, wealthy and funded by the fossil fuel industry. These AOL personalities who live outside have benefitted from the fossil fuel industry.

Interesting to note is that the AOL in Guyana has no connection to working-class or-

ganisations, so one is left to wonder which low-income strata in Guyana they hope to save by their “anti-imperialist” instincts. Professor Clive Thomas describes the action of AOL as “crass inhumanity”.

An instructive occasion to reflect on, and which gives an expanding insight into the Freudian minds of these people is a letter they wrote in the newspapers calling for the discontinuation of oil production. Now no one is going to believe what I will now state.

You have to read the letter to believe it.

They informed us that Guyana should not continue with the fossil fuel industry, because greenhouse emissions kill African people. Is it true that only African people are affected? If

no, then why mention African people specifically? Here is laid bare the intention of the AOL. They have a nasty political agenda.

The second dimension is a group of diaspora Guyanese retirees who are looking for meaning in their lives in their adopted countries as advanced age approaches. They see the oil industry here as something that can provide mental stimulation. So, they arrogate to themselves the right to speak on behalf of

us.

All Guyanese are waiting to hear what they have to say about their adopted countries supporting what borders on crime against humanity in Gaza at the moment.

How can you bomb a piece of land where only civilians live in and have nowhere to run and they are dying by the hundreds the past three days?

How can you live in a country that supports such bestiality?

The oil and gas industry accelerating growth across multiple sectors

GUYANA’S economy continues to experience unprecedented and robust growth, thanks to the burgeoning oil-andgas industry. According to the Bank of Guyana’s Mid-Year report for 2023, the economy recorded exponential growth, with a real-oil Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 59.5 per cent, and nonoil GDP growth of 12.3 per cent. The report also highlighted that real-oil growth benefitted from crude oil production of 68.7 million barrels.

The growing demands of the oil-and-gas industry have fostered economic growth and opportunities beyond the petroleum industry, with other sectors such as construction, agriculture, services, wholesale, re-

tail trade and repairs, administrative and support services, accommodation and food services, and the transport and storage industry experiencing economic booms.

The establishment of the industry has created numerous benefits for Guyanese, creating a domino effect as the investment and employment opportunities across the various sectors continue to grow, creating avenues for entrepreneurship and business development to cater to the niche demands of the sector.

According to the Bank of Guyana report, “The construction sector experienced sustained and robust growth, increasing by 44.1 per cent at end-June 2023.

This outturn reflects a continued increase in

government infrastructure projects, along with rapid private sector development initiatives.”

The construction sector has grown exponentially, utilising revenue from the oil sector to repair and construct roads, bridges, and other infrastructure countrywide.

There have also been vast investments in the construction of ports, wharves and other offshore supporting infrastructure, all stemming from the needs of the oiland-gas industry. The Vreed-en-Hoop Shorebase, and the expansion of Guyana Shore Base Incorporated’s facilities are just two examples of construction developments as a direct result of the oil-and-gas industry, since both projects will support offshore operations.

According to the report, “The wholesale, retail trade and repairs sector recorded growth of 14.2 per cent as infrastructural developments continue rapidly, and consumers continue to spend more, a sign of confidence in the economy.” Administrative and support services subsector expanded by 16.1 per cent, as the petroleum sector continues its expansive growth. In the information and communication subsector, 19.8 per cent growth was recorded. This expansion is the result of both public and private investments into infrastructure within the sector.

The accommodation and food services industry experienced an expansion of 10 per cent.

The sector has been positively influenced by in-

creased occupancy rates across hotels, and the opening of new hotels and dining establishments. Additionally, the transport and storage industry grew by 6.7 per cent. This outturn reflected the continued growth of the oil-and-gas sector, which demanded more of these services.

Construction is underway on the US$32.2 million four-star Hyatt Place Hotel located at Providence on the East Bank of Demerara, which will have 125 rooms. The US$15 million Aiden Hotel at Oronoque and Robb Streets is also under construction, and is set to be completed by January 2024.

There have been calls by sections of the media and some individuals for the operations offshore to be

halted, citing various reasons such as the need to renegotiate the Stabroek Petroleum Agreement, or ill-informed environmental concerns. Absence of the oil-and-gas industry means that all of the aforementioned progress would not have been possible at such a fast rate. The oil-and -gas industry continues to pave the way for investment and growth, taking the country to new levels of economic development, thereby benefitting thousands of Guyanese. As the industry continues to expand, Guyanese will enjoy an increase in economic opportunities in the various sectors comprising Guyana’s economic framework.

LAST Tuesday, the world celebrated Mental Health Day, under the theme: ‘our Minds, Our Rights’, declaring mental health to be a universal human right.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) holds that people everywhere should be able to access the highest standard of mental care, be protected from mental health risks, and have the right to “liberty, independence and inclusion in community”.

H o w e v e r, f i g u r e s show that one in eight people globally are living with mental health conditions, increasingly affecting the young, yet

less than two-thirds are receiving treatment. It all comes back to the stigma attached to mental health, and the reluctance of people to even talk about it or even admit that they are suffering.

In recent years, celebrities and sports personalities have been openly admitting to experiencing mental health issues, and this has fed into the wider community. But there is still much to be done to break down the wall of silence around mental health, carefully erected over so many years.

Experts are unified in their view that dia-

logue on the subject is of the utmost importance.

And well-known host of the popular Voice show, Carson Daly, added his own voice to the call, in his speech at the inaugural gala of Project Healthy Minds (PHM), a non-profit group formed to foster dialogue and end the stigma against mental health issues.

Daly told the audience at this year’s event about his first panic attack, and his decision to talk to a friend about it.

He called it “the single most important step in my mental health journey,” making the telling observation that he felt this simple act had

led to 10 more people ‘opening up’ about their challenges.

“I may never cure my anxiety,” Daly confessed, adding, “sometimes it’s tough, but it’s more important that I had the bravery to share my story just in case it helps somebody the way that my friend helped me.”

In fact, his friend surprised him by admitting that he was familiar with panic attacks, having suffered them all through school, and advised him not to seek the help of a doctor, but of a qualified mental health professional.

Like so many of us,

unaware of what help is available out there, Daly said, “…This is something I did not know existed. I didn’t grow up with any of this; we didn’t talk about our mental health. It was, ‘suck it up’.”

Among many societies, including our own, this view still prevails.

The idea that we must

keep our mental health challenges private and solve them ourselves still holds sway. The shame that people feel is still preventing them from seeking professional help either for themselves or for a family member who may displaying ncharacteristic behaviour.

China’s modernisation offers big lessons for the world

ON the eve of its 75th anniversary, perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the remarkable development and modernisation progress made since the triumph of the revolution in 1949.

Twenty-two years later, China gained its rightful place at the United Nations, in 1971, and the next five decades saw a start of its spiraling growth as a major developing country.

In 1980, when Beijing announced a One Child policy to keep its population growth under manageable proportions, the PRC was internationally condemned, but two decades later, the World health Organisation (WHO) admitted it was a very wise decision.

President Xi Jinping holds that “Modernization is not a luxury for the privileged few,” but rather “the common pursuit of all people around the world.”

It’s a simple but profound truth, based on China’s experience over the past 74 years, showing that modernisation can only come with the material means to change from old to new and past to present, but always with eyes clearly on the future.

As a developing country with 1.4 billion people, China’s modernisation process features ‘common prosperity’ as the key to its continuity.

President Xi also says “Common prosperity is what socialism is essentially about, and what the people want…” – which is why it remains a consistent goal of the governing Chinese Communist Party (CPC) and the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, achieving common prosperity for all has featured even more prominently on China’s national development agenda, with advanced education and scientific and technological capacities as the powerhouses for sustained growth.

As a result, China can today boast that over 200 million Chinese have received higher education since 2012, with around 60 per cent of its economic growth spurred by scientific and technological advance-

ment.

A decade later, in 2022, China contributed 17 per cent of the world’s GDP, and lifted nearly 100 million rural people out of poverty, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, by all means a giant step toward the ultimate bottom-line goal common prosperity for all.

C h i n a ’s w i d e l y - a c claimed victory against poverty is a good example of its significant progress towards common prosperity, but this sterling achievement only came with and through special measures, starting with targeting poverty alleviation to maximise the use of limited resources by local governments.

That was done by every local-government agency and body identifying each and every poor household under its jurisdiction, creating a file, and starting the ongoing process of lifting those identified out of poverty.

But for any poor Chinese household to be registered, its qualifications must be disclosed for public scrutiny, compared with nation-wide data and then publicly confirmed.

This rigorous process is also transparent, as it also ensures the available labor, materials and financial resources are used where they are most needed.

China’s poverty alleviation is not approached by way of direct or automatic employment or cash bailouts, but instead focuses more on helping people produce and earn, by setting-up their own businesses with secure start-up loans and skills training.

Interestingly, in China, poverty alleviation performance is a key criterion in the evaluation, appointment and promotion of public servants at all levels of government and county-wide.

Relatively better-off provinces, cities, counties and entities are also paired with their poor peers, providing funds, people and other assistance.

More than three million officials have thus been dispatched to poor villages to work and live with the poverty-stricken people and this better and directly understand their plight.

In such an enabling social environment of government policy support, wide mobilization and public

participation, many Chinese Internet companies have voluntarily helped remote regions sell their products via live streaming, and taught rural residents how to utilize social media platforms to grow their business.

As a result, many local products and people in places hardly known or heard-of are now known to the world. China also faced and overcame the numerous challenges associated with modernization of an extremely-huge population.

And rightly so.

With over 1.4 billion people, a number larger than the combined population of all developed countries, China has actually started transforming the international landscape of modernisation.

It’s is the largest-scale modernisation in human history, and also the most difficult, having to deliver on everything from employment, distribution, education and housing, to medical, elderly and childcare.

China has, therefore, shown the world that only by vigorously forging consensus among different members in society, and realising inclusive development that nations can make any steady and sustainable progress toward modernisation.

But in all of this, the PRC’s development still remains unbalanced and inadequate.

Why? Because, even though it’s the second-largest economy in the world, its per capita GDP ranks lower than 80th worldwide; and there’s also a great gap between urban and rural areas in China, in terms of infrastructure, education, medical care and job opportunities.

As a result of geography and population factors, among many others, rural areas are still relatively underdeveloped (compared to urban areas).

Thing is, there is no precedent in human history where a country with over a billion citizens has successfully realised modernisation.

Advancing the Chinese approach to modernisation

for a huge population is therefore difficult for small Caribbean nations, but it’s been right for the PRC, and with lots of lessons for the world.

Take the following facts: Since the Industrial Revolution began, only 1.2 billion people are living in

high-income countries modernised through the Western model, about 15.8 per cent of the world’s population.

China, on the other hand, has more than 1.4 billion people, accounting for 18 per cent of the world’s population, the modernisation of which

will double the world’s modernised population.

Chinese modernisation is also building on and further exploring pathways for developing countries, which have more than 80 per cent of the world’s population.

Be wary of misinformation

THE world is changing; the role of information has changed in a society where there is widespread access to the Internet and World Wide Web. Information is now readily available, easily accessible, and verifiable. Anyone born in the past six decades would know at least where to find the basic information that they are looking for to quench their thirst for knowledge about politics, life, economics and health, etc, apart from the usual books.

Still, there are many countries in the world in this day and age that offer the public distilled and controlled information to make an informed choice, especially in politics. These countries feel

that the information is too fleeting, too much, and sometimes very dangerous in influencing the public’s mind, so they seek to control access to it in the name of public good. After all, they feel that because of the many different sources and types of the information reaching the public, to avoid misinformation and disinformation growing in the societies, it is better that they regulate, restrict or control the information.

So, their people are kept in official darkness about the different cultures and socioeconomic developments in the world.

The countries that do this mostly have characteristics of communism, authoritarianism, and totalitarianism.

There are other coun-

tries which are modern, liberal and free with the flow of information to their people; they do not restrict access to the Internet and information.

The public is trusted to choose from a wide range of information and sources. These countries tend to be open, democratic and semi-democratic. They know the power of information, and encourage the public to access it responsibly, and trust the public to know the truth from lies and misinformation. They trust the public, which, in most cases, are intellectual and competent individuals, to distinguish between facts, opinions, and outright lies.

Closer to home, the Caribbean countries have evolved with time from having total control over

the information to limited control. While the western world has free access to information, information communication technologies and technology, Caribbean countries are still playing catch up, and are lagging behind, due to no fault of their own, as history would explain.

Here at home, the government is investing heavily in the relevant information and communication sectors. More and more people have access to the Internet and World Wide Web. Guyana is removing all the controls and regulations it had on access to information, and is slowly positioning itself as a knowledge economy.

The media is free; there is freedom of the press and freedom of expression, regardless of the naysayers and organisations that complain when they are taken to task for the information they put out there in the public deliberately. Guidelines, rules and best practices are constantly reinforced for reporting and journalism, and information generally.

Even now, the government is constantly defending itself against deliberate misinformation and disinformation in the public about its policies and plans. It spends part of its time, too, setting the record straight on its record, and explaining away some of the bizarre and irrational policy positions of the Opposition. The Opposition creates a con-

fusion in the public domain by saying things that are not realistic and true, but are popular with the public. They sound nice and flowery to the public, but the government of the day knows the expensive price that they will have to pay if these things are allowed to go unanswered and unchallenged.

Access to more information from different sources by the public is good, and means that the government has to always have its public relations machinery oiled and ready to offer the public factual and true information. It must always be ready to clear up the disinformation, misinformation and lies that are purposefully placed in the public domain.

For example, General Secretary and Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo's press conference is crucial to government tackling the narratives that the opposition parties feed the public in doses each week that could see the public getting the wrong idea or impression about government and his party.

Many times, the opposition parties are caught lying and peddling inaccuracies through their commentaries, statements and positions in the traditional and social media.

Jagdeo’s press conference is an important part and staple of the government’s information and communication infrastructure. He effectively takes the entire opposition

on, therefore leaving the President and Ministers to focus their attention on government business. The press conferences held by Jagdeo are widely viewed, and get under the opposition’s skin, constantly exposing their duplicitous nature and their misinformation.

This is why, too, the opposition can’t catch their breath and stand firm. While Jagdeo asks for the evidence and facts of wrongdoings, discrimination and racism, Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton, instead of presenting the information, which he says is easily accessible and everybody knows, does not present it and constantly shies away from quoting facts and statistics. Norton and the opposition do not believe in presenting empirically sound evidence when in and more so out of office.

It does not help his case, and that's why the public would always gravitate to Jagdeo and the government.

Norton and the opposition are not trusted as a source for information and truth. They are reactive, and are most times clueless about policy issues and policy making.

They are textbook politicians from one era of Guyana’s past trying to sound realistic when faced with questions from the public and media. Be wary of misinformation. The truth and factual information do not wear clothes.

Massara Village gets $2.5M pool to boost tourism, host swimming competitions

MASSARA Village in Region Nine will significantly benefit from a spanking new $2.5 million pool, which was procured from supplemental funding in 2022.

Toshao of the village, Lenny Moses, said the need for the pool came after the village was tasked with hosting the schools swimming competitions.

“Funds for this project came from the supplementary budget. So, some time last year all Indigenous leaders were in Georgetown and we were asked to submit priority projects based on issues that were raised…and so I submitted a pool for my priority project,” he related.

Since its construction, the pool has been used for the inter-school championships between the

villages of Massara and Yakarinta.

The 25 m X 20 m pool which took approximately over a month to be constructed will also be used to foster tourism in the region.

“This pool was constructed in our sports complex. So, after this, it will be handed over to the sports club of which I am also the vice chairman. So, our next step is to move on to a tourism-based platform and so this pool will be a part of our package,” the Toshao explained.

Currently, lights are being installed around the pool while stalls and seating arrangements are expected to be installed soon. Plans are also underway to host various programmes during the evenings to create a con-

ducive and relaxing environment for visitors.

“It was quite expensive to do this project, which is a first of its kind for the region. So, as the business grows then we will be able to do more and build more infrastructures to further enhance the poolside,” Moses related.

Further, the Toshao expressed his gratitude to the government for providing the funding.

In July, 2022, during the National Toshaos Council Conference, President, Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali had announced that a $3 billion supplementary budget would be presented in the National Assembly to further aid in the financial support of Amerindian communities.

$5M food hub in Karrau will provide ‘ready market’ for farmers, residents

Ongoing works on the $5M food hub in Region Seven RESIDENTS and farmers of Karrau Village, Region Seven, will soon benefit from the $5 million food hub which will consolidate all the agricultural produce from the community at a central location, while providing a ‘ready market’ for the farmers.

It will benefit over 650 residents and 16 farmers of Karrau, miners, loggers, and other communities to purchase fresh produce at the hub. A major part of the hub is the cold-storage aspect which will help to store meat and cash crops.

It is anticipated that the hub, which will run on solar energy, will be completed by the end of the month and be operational by December.

This undertaking has been made possible through the Ministry of Agriculture’s Hinterland Environmentally Sustainable Agricultural Development Project (HESADP), with funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Guyana.

The primary focus of this project is to promote village economies in Regions One and Nine by offering small incentives to businesses and community

development. The project’s scope was increased last year to include funding for initiatives in Karrau and Agatash in Region Seven and Kato and Paramakatoi in Region Eight.

During a community outreach in Karrau on Friday, led by HESADP’s Hinterland Coordinator, Raymond Latchman; IFAD’s Country Director, Maija Peltola; Toshao of Karrau, Shane Cornelius; other representatives of the ministry; village council, and IFAD, residents were engaged on the existing small-grant project and other future developments to enhance their community.

Latchman underlined that across the entire programme, 40,000 persons are expected to benefit from this project. So far, over 30,000 persons have already benefitted.

“We are expecting to surpass that 40,000 target by the end of the year… the target for 2023 is just about 14,000,” Latchman indicated.

“We are also discussing the possibility of the scaling up of some of these projects.

“What has happened before is that the farmers have only sold individually and not together. People who were looking for local produce had to go to each farmer to look for this produce. So, now, they will have everything together in this food hub, which is also well located in the town,”

“If this region can be conceived in terms of its vastness, and diversity of resources, then it will be evident that Region Six has the potential to develop into an economic powerhouse.

“Having such an understanding would lead to a greater recognition that this region’s potential goes beyond its agricultural and commercial empowerment. It will allow greater focus on the development of the region’s savannahs, its vast forest resources and its unquestionable eco-tourism potential.”

Region Six, covering an area of 36,234 square kilometres, is more than 16 times the size of Region Four. Traditionally recognised as one of Guyana’s primary agricultural heartlands, it stands as the country’s second most popular region.

Prime Minister Phillips highlighted the region’s potential to transform into a major economic tourism destination and a hub for fabrication, manufacturing, and agro-processing.

Therefore, he underscored that the Berbice Expo and Trade Fair serves as a platform to showcase its vast potential. He emphasised that public investments have already begun acting as a catalyst for revitalisation of the economy.

“Our government, the government that I am a part of is reigniting the economic engines of this region.

Through significant investments in infrastructure, we are laying the groundwork for economic expansion,” he said.

The bridging of the Corentyne River, aimed at facilitating the movement of people and goods between Guyana and Suriname, is one of the major projects planned for the region.

Dental school being transformed into main reference centre for dentistry – Min. Anthony

As the government is providing resources to improve the quality of service, Dr. Anthony emphasised the need for continuous training and retraining of professionals to maintain the standards. Attendees were encouraged to advance their studies and refresh their minds with the newest information and technology critical to modernising services.

DESPITE the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Region facing economic hardships, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has indicated that Guyana’s prospects are looking up, owing to its rapidly evolving oil and gas sector.

“Economic growth in the Caribbean was strong in 2022 but is moderating this year…Real GDP growth in the Region (excluding Guyana) firmed to an estimated 4.2 per cent in 2022, as countries continued reopening after the COVID-19 lockdowns,” the IMF’s regional economic outlook report revealed.

external conditions, the IMF findings showed that the growth of the Caribbean's commodity exporters will slow down in 2023 and even more in 2024.

“Growth in tourism-dependent Caribbean economies is also expected to moderate in 2023 and 2024, as the demand for tourism services continues to soften.

favourable external conditions, although Guyana will continue to grow at a robust pace following the discovery of sizable oil reserves,” the report indicated.

The report also lauded Guyana’s steadfast commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable growth, further solidifying the country’s standing as a key global economic player.

The report not only validated Guyana’s dedication to prosperity, but also highlighted the nation’s resilience in the face of global economic challenges.

MoM initiative excels in Region Six - President Ali says some 20 families received help

President, Dr. Irfaan Ali earlier this year handed over another three houses built by the Men on Mission (MoM) for vulnerable individuals in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) (Adrian Narine photo) RECOGNIZING the barriers that are being destroyed and the ever-lasting bonds being created, President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, commended the Men on Mission (MoM) programme in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) for assisting approximately 20 families so far.

During an engagement with residents of Port Mourant on Saturday, the Presi-

dent recognized the manner in which MoM has excelled and the sustainable and strong communities that are being built because of the initiative.

“They [MoM] have been doing some good work… helping about 20 families in this region,” the Head of State said while adding: “This region has performed most outstandingly [with

the] Men on a Mission programme, they have created a very strong leadership for the men here.”

Just last month a single mother of three received a house, compliments of the MoM initiative. Notably, the Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha was a part of the opening of “a brand-new home” and delivered the keys to the owner and her family.

“When the President was in Region Six on one of his visits, the mother met him and asked for him to help her get a house, President Ali asked me to find someone who is capable and will be ready to build a house for the family. I

spoke with Mr. Shaw, who is also a contractor with the Ministry of Agriculture and he agreed to build the house for the single mother,” he had noted.

The two-bedroom house was built and furnished with all amenities, inclusive of light and water, at an approximate cost of eight million dollars.

FOLLOWING through on the promise to enhance community grounds across Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), President, Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced that bids will be opened from Monday for the upgrading of over 120 grounds.

During an engagement with Port Mourant residents on Saturday, he said: “On Monday, the bids will be opened for the upgrading of 125 grounds across Region Six,” while emphasising that it is an investment of over $400 million.

Last month, Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, met with grounds committee chairpersons, the regional chairman and

vice-chairman and stakeholders from the 19 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and three municipalities, at the Albion Sports Complex.

The minister explained that given the number of grounds in the region and the works identified, it would cost over $600 million, which is much more than the amount currently allocated.

As such, a decision was taken to commence works on the most critical and essential areas and tackle the works in different phases.

The first phase will include fencing, landfilling, construction, and/or repairs to sanitary facilities, as well as regular ground mainte-

nance.

Prior to the visit, the minister had visited the grounds to see firsthand the works that are needed, and to formulate a balanced approach to addressing the various issues.

Based on meetings with the local representatives, priorities were outlined for each ground.

The minister explained then that given the limited funding available in this phase, the key concern would be to ensure that fences are in place to keep animals out of the facilities so as to avoid further damage.

He added that landfilling will include ploughing and levelling, as well as

Moreover, the availability of sanitary facilities was a common issue highlighted. Such facilities will be constructed on grounds that regularly host activities for use by players and

spectators, while existing sanitary facilities will be rehabilitated.

Minister Singh had noted that the investment that is being made signifies a remarkable step towards fostering recreation and providing residents with an

opportunity to play sports, such as cricket and football.

He also emphasised the importance these grounds play in community, while noting their importance towards physical well-being and community cohesion.

Shedding light on some of the traditional sectors that have been revived under the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government, the President noted that those left to decay under the previous coalition government are now able to contribute largely to the expansion of Guyana’s economy.

Expounding on the significant growth in the traditional sectors, Dr. Ali gave recognition to the continuous blossoming of agriculture. He said that agriculture, forestry and fishing expanded by 7.6 per cent in the first half of 2023.

Reg. One happy with new ambulances THE government of Guyana continues to work assiduously towards ensuring that all Guyanese have access to better healthcare services in their respective regions.

During an interview with the Sunday Chronicle, the Regional Chairman of Region One (Barima Waini) Brentnol Ashley expressed his gratitude on behalf of the residents of the region to the government and the Ministry of Health for providing them with two additional ambulances to ease the burden of getting to the hospitals in a faster and safer manner.

The ambulances are earmarked for the Pakera District Hospital, which will service the Baramita, Arakaka area, in the Matakai sub-region; the other one is being sent to Baramita, which, according to the Regional Chairman, is “a very big village” that has a lot of health-related issues.

“This is a great accomplishment for the region, and more so, it will be of greater assistance to the people of the Matakai sub-region, where it will be sent to serve. Oftentimes, people have to pay a large sum of money for cars or other vehicles to transport their loved ones to whichever community it is to the respective hospitals. But now I am happy to say that this will alleviate that additional burden on the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), or the people themselves,” Mr. Ashley said.

The Regional Chairman further stated that the initiative was a commitment that was made

by President Irfaan Ali, and he is happy the Pres-

ident delivered “way before” the expected time.

According to Ashley, the people of Region One have seen a vast improvement in the health sector thus far, compared to where it was under the past administration.

“Where our health system was in the past, before the PPP/C government took office, was nothing to talk about.

Today, we have seen the tremendous changes that are happening in the health sector across Guyana, and specifically in Region One. There have been improvements in all our health areas, and health service delivery,” he said.

He noted that Baramita once had a health centre, and now, under this government, it is a cottage hospital.

“We now have doctors, nurses, Medex, and other healthcare professionals,” he said, “which includes dentex, along with other laboratory services, and x-ray services. Services that were never offered to us before are now being offered in several of our hospitals, and we are happy about it.

I would also like to say that Moruca, which is the Kumaka district hospital, now provides theatre services, other laboratory and x-ray services to people, which also includes ultrasound.”

Ashley also explained that the Mabaruma District Hospital is now retrofitting to deal with children who are sick and may need surgery. He further noted that they are training their own nurses in Region One, which he said is inclusive of community health workers.

“We do not have everything perfect or where we want it to be,

but we are getting there.

And from the RDC level, we have committed to working with our government. Compared to where we were with the previous administration, I can speak for the people in this region and say that we are tremendously happy now.

“When it comes to our health sector, the educational sector, and all the development throughout the region as a whole, it is showing, not only physically but on the faces of our people,” the Regional Chairman said.

Man dies after garbage truck crashes into trench AN early-morning accident on Saturday along the Cullen Public Road

on the Essequibo Coast has resulted in the death of 33-year-old Angel Az-

ocar, an employee of Puran Brothers Disposal Service.

A statement from Police Headquarters on Saturday noted that the accident

occurred aabout 05:00hrs.

It is reported that the driver of the garbage truck, identified as Rambeer Singh, a 45-year-old from Lima, Essequibo Coast, lost control and crashed into a trench; at the time, three other employees were inside the vehicle’s cabin.

They have been identified as Govie Daniels, a 39-year-old of Richmond, Essequibo Coast; Isaiah Latchman, 26, of Pomona Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast and the now deceased, Azocar.

Police said the driver was speeding east along the northern driving lane of the road; the driver claimed that he applied brakes, but lost control while doing so.

This caused the vehicle to end up in a nearby trench on the northern side of the road. As a result, the driver and occupants were taken out of the vehicle by public-spirited citizens with the assistance of the region's Fire Service.

However, Azocar was

trapped in an unconscious state inside the cabin; his body was later removed and everyone was transported to the Suddie Public Hospital, where Azocar was pronounced dead.

Cricket among Olympic Games sports approved by IOC for Los Angeles 2028

Cricket's return to the Olympics for the Los Angeles 2028 Games has been approved by the International Olympic Committee executive board.

Flag football, a non-contact version of American football, squash, lacrosse and baseball/ softball are also in.

IOC members will now vote tomorrow to ratify the board's recommendation.

IOC president Thomas Bach said the new sports allow the Olympic movement to "engage with new athletes and fan communities".

"Taking into consideration that these proposals and these sports are fully in line with the sports culture of our hosts in 2028, with the American sports culture, they will showcase iconic American sports to the world while bringing at the same time international sports to the United States," Bach said.

Host cities are able to propose sports they would like added to the Olympic programme when they stage the event.

Cricket's only previous appearance at the Olympics was at Paris 1900, when Great Britain beat France in the final. It was also the only match after the Netherlands and Belgium withdrew.

There is expected to be both a T20 men's and women's tour-

nament at the LA Games, with the United States set to field a side as host nation.

The United States is co-hosting the men's T20 World Cup with the West Indies in June 2024.

"We see the growing popularity of cricket, particularly the T20 format," added Bach.

"This is a win-win situation.

The Olympic Games will give cricket a global stage and the opportunity to grow beyond the traditional cricket countries and regions.

"And for the Olympic Movement, it's the opportunity to engage with fan and athlete communities to which so far we have very little or even no access."

The richest sports league in the world - the National Football League - helped support the flag football bid, which was led by the sport's governing body the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).

Flag football is five-a-side, on a smaller pitch - 30 by 70 yards - and no contact is allowed, with players needing to pull the flag off the person with the ball instead of tackling.

"Minister Manikchand has made it clear that it is her vision and that of the Ministry to provide every learner with the access and facilities to engage in a sport as early as possible and this programme is certainly making that vision a reality."

The modified teaching programme developed by Master Coach Aleem Hussain has seen phenomenal results at CSEC with an over 90% Grade I pass rate, an incredible statistic considering that none of the students had access to a golf course to practice. This is set to change with the opening of the Westside Golf Course which is a model for innovative golf and designed for beginners.

Cricket World Cup 2023: India demolish Pakistan in Ahmedabad

By Stephan Shemilt,Chief cricket writer INDIA demolished Pakistan as the most eagerly awaited contest of the World Cup so far turned into a one-sided anti-climax in Ahmedabad.

Pakistan have never beaten India in a men's 50-over World Cup, but looked to be laying a platform to challenge the hosts when they reached 155-2 in the cauldron of the world's largest cricket stadium.

What followed was an implosion. Captain Babar Azam was bowled by Mohammed Siraj for 50 to begin a collapse of eight wickets for 36 runs, Pakistan spiralling to 191 all out. Siraj was one of five India bowlers to pick up two wickets.

The target seemed so unlikely to trouble the powerful India batting line-up. Though Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were both out for 16, home skipper Rohit Sharma batted magnificently for an 86 that put the result beyond doubt.

Rohit shared 77 for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer, who ended on 53 not out as victory was sealed with almost 20 overs to spare.

For India, an eighth successive defeat of Pakistan in World Cups, a run that stretches back to 1992, is their third win in three games in this year's tournament. They join New Zealand at the top of the group table and next meet Bangladesh on Thursday.

Pakistan lose for the first time at this World Cup, but that disappointment will be nothing in the context of such a meek performance against their fiercest rivals. They move on to play Australia in Bengaluru on Friday.

• India dominate World Cup showpiece As ever, this was billed as the highlight of the group stage of the tournament. To some, it is even more important than the final. This particular meeting between India and Pakistan had the added intrigue of it taking place in India, with none of the Pakistan XI having played in India before.

The match was preceded by a concert, essentially an opening ceremony the tournament itself did not have. The venue, the Narendra Modi Stadium, has a capacity of

132,000. With next to no Pakistan fans inside, it created one of the most partisan atmospheres in the history of all sport. Every India boundary and wicket was met with a cacophony of noise, similar Pakistan successes greeted by near silence.

The contest was on a knife-edge when Babar and Mohammad Rizwan were adding 82 for the third Pakistan wicket. India and their supporters were growing concerned until Siraj got one to keep slightly low en route to Babar's off stump.

From there, Pakistan fell apart, a collapse mainly of their own making hinting at a psychological barrier when it comes to this fixture at the 50over World Cup. Early wickets were needed to put India under any sort of pressure, but Rohit's strokeplay was almost disdainful.

India move onwards in what seems an unstoppable march towards the semi-finals, while Pakistan must regroup to face Australia. It is the start of a tough and decisive run of fixtures that also includes meetings with South Africa, New Zealand and England.

India had already dished out heavy defeats to Australia and Afghanistan, but this was by far their most impressive performance, even if they did make the strange selection decision to omit off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in favour of all-rounder Shardul Thakur.

As they targeted the stumps on a pitch that regularly kept low, the hosts sometimes erred in line. That allowed Pakistan openers Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique, who made 36 and 20 respectively, to make a strong start before the partnership between Babar and Rizwan.

But when Siraj found the opening, India pounced.

They took the last eight wickets in 13.2 overs. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav removed Saud Shakeel and Iftikhar Ahmed in the same over, Jasprit Bumrah produced a wonderful off-cutter to bowl Rizwan for 49. In all, seven batters were bowled or lbw.

Before this match, Pakistan had won games they would have reasonably expected to, with defeats of Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

Now, in their first major test of the tournament, they have been found wanting.

In all likelihood, they are competing with South Africa, Australia, England and New Zealand for three spots in the semi-finals and will need

a vast improvement in those upcoming key fixtures.

Pakistan have form for improving in tournaments, for bouncing back from defeats.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that they will meet India in the final on the same ground on 19 November, but they will need to move on from this chastening loss quickly.

'The bowlers set up the game again' - what they said India captain Rohit Sharma: "There is no doubt about it that the bowlers set up the game for us again today. It was a great effort. I don't think it was a 190 pitch. At one stage we were looking at 270-280 but they came back and showed grit and that says a lot about the guys.

"All in all it is looking good, and I want to keep my fingers crossed. We don't want to get too excited or get too low, we want to stay balanced."

Pan Am Games 2023: 20 athletes to represent Guyana across nine disciplines

GUYANA’s team is all set to participate in the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, from October 20 – November 5.

Twenty athletes will represent Guyana across the disciplines of Archery, Badminton, Boxing, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Swimming, Weight lifting, Electronic Sports (Esports) and Track and Field.

On Friday, a hybrid meeting was convened at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport as part of the new protocol between the Ministry, National Sports Commission and Guyana Olympic Association regarding meeting with national athletes to ensure all systems are in place to aid their performance.

Minister Charles Ramson Jr. extended well wishes for himself, the government and the people of Guyana.

He individually spoke to each team’s respective managers, coaches and athletes.

He engaged them on their preparedness and queried if there were any challenges or areas in which they could work collaboratively to improve the athletes’ prospects at the games.

He urged the athletes to do their best, be proud representatives and use the opportunity as a building block for achieving greater heights in all aspects of their career as athletes and general development.

GOA President Godfrey Munroe was present with members of his Executive Committee.

He delivered a charge and wished all the athletes well on behalf of the GOA. He noted that a critical feature of Guyana’s representation is the diversity of disciplines for which we have qualified athletes at the games.

Series defeat for Windies Women after batting flops again

MELBOURNE, Australia, (CMC) – Another indifferent batting effort saw West Indies Women plunge to an eight-wicket defeat to Australia Women in the final One-Day International, and concede the three-match series 2-0 here Saturday.

The Caribbean side could only muster 103 in the 32nd over after being sent in at Junction Oval, with Rashada Williams (25) and Hayley Matthews (23) the only specialist batsmen to reach double figures.

Australia Women then coasted to their target in the 16th over with captain Alyssa Healy top-scoring with 32, Ellyse Perry getting an unbeaten 29 and opener Phoebe Litchfield chipping in with 27.

The visitors’ batting performance was a trend throughout the series, bowled out for 83 in the opening ODI which they also lost by eight wickets and then gathering 107 for eight before the second ODI was rained off.

“I think for us we definitely have to find a way for more of our batters to chip in,” said Matthews.

“It’s quite disappointing for a lot of us, especially throughout that ODI series, obviously not being able to get totals on the board.

Prolific Johnson in CCC squad for Regional Super 50 Cup campaign PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Oct 13, CMC – Outstanding teenaged left-hander Jordan Johnson will feature in Combined Campuses and Colleges’ Regional Super50 Cup campaign, after being named in a 14-man squad.

Guyana pledges support to Cricket West Indies

President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, pledged support to Cricket West Indies (CWI) for the redevelopment of cricket in the Caribbean through infrastructural development, cricket programmes, and commercial opportunities.

On 13 October, 2023, President Ali and CWI President, Dr. Kishore Shallow, met at State House in Guyana as part of the commitment to strengthen stakeholder relationships across the region. CWI Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe; CWI Independent Director, Manniram Prashad; and Owner of Guyana Amazon Warriors, Dr. Ranjisinghi Bobby Ramroop, were also in attendance.

Guyana’s President, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali The Head of State reiterated his commitment to establishing a partnership with CWI to improve the overall performance of West Indies cricket. One of the primary objectives will be establishing a High-Perfor-

mance Centre in Guyana to service cricketers from across the region.

His Excellency said, “We are excited as a government to play our part with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and Crick-

et West Indies (CWI) in the new re-development of cricket in the region. We welcome the partnership with CWI in the development of a regional High-Performance Centre and cricket academy here in Guyana."

He added his intention to work with the CWI President to advance the popularity and growth of the sport on multiple fronts in the Caribbean.

"We are also working with President Dr. Shallow and Cricket West Indies on advancing some innovative ideas in bringing more opportunities to our cricket players and spectators in the Region. I believe strongly that defining our product as distinct from other regions and countries is critical in the rebranding and repositioning CWI

globally. Such a plan must incorporate the culture, people and natural beauty of our region."

President Ali underscored the importance of collaboration between parties with an interest in advancing the development of cricket at every level. He said, “I urge CWI to unify their efforts in rebuilding and strengthening our cricket in the interests of all stakeholders.”

Dr. Shallow lauded His Excellency for Guyana’s investments in cricket thus far and recognized the potential of collaborating with Guyana.

He expressed, “President Ali’s commitment to cricket is evident with the major investments to stage the magnificent cricket festival, including the CPL finals in Guyana. His zeal for the

success of West Indies cricket is unquestionable.

This partnership with Guyana promises tremendous value for our young and emerging cricketers who will have access to world-class facilities and programs comparable to the best in the world. I emphasize that for West Indies teams to be iconic again, it is imperative that there is considerable collaboration between CWI and governments in our region.”

Golden Jaguars beat Puerto Rico to go top of Group GUYANA’s senior men’s national team, the Golden Jaguars, maintained their perfect record in their Concacaf Nations League B group with a come-frombehind 3-1 win against Puerto Rico yesterday in a procession that demonstrated the local side’s growth this year.

Both teams entered this clash that was contested at the St. Kitts and Nevis Foot-

ball Technical Centre (SKN) in Basseterre with a perfect record but Puerto Rico were ahead on goal difference, so a win was needed.

However, the Guyanese suffered finding themselves trailing early on when Leandro Antonetti put the opposing side ahead in the 11th minute. Guyana trailed through the first half and in the 60th minute, star boy Omari Glasgow equalised

via penalty after forward Kelsey Benjamin went down in the box from a soft challenge.

It was all Guyana from there as Benjamin fired Guyana ahead three minutes later with an easy tap in from a good cross from Liam Gordon, who continues to impress with his performances.

The game was put to bed in the 85th minute when Deon Moore capitalised on a

mistake from Puerto Rico’s shot-stopper to slot into an empty net.

The win now puts Guyana top of their Group and on par for qualification for the Concacaf Nations League A that has the likes of USA, Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica.

Guyana is set to play Puerto Rico again on Tuesday at the same venue for their second ground game.

T&T rally to stun Guatemala; Barbados, SVG thrashed MIAMI, United States, (CMC) – Trinidad and Tobago staged a remarkable rally to come from two goals down and edge Guatemala 3-2 in a thrilling League A contest of the CONCACAF Nations League on Friday.

Reeling after Rubio Méndez (13th) and Oscar Santis (32nd) silenced the home crowd at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, T&T stormed back before half-time through Alvin Jones who halved the deficit from the spot in the 36th minute.

Trinidad were back in the contest when substitute Reon Moore grabbed the equaliser in the 54th minute and Nathaniel James also came off the bench to find the winner with time ticking away at the end to seal

the points and ensure their side remained unbeaten in Group A with their third straight victory.
