Mentally-ill detainee fatally shot

A MENTALLY-ILL man who was arrested on Saturday by a City constable was fatally shot during an escape bid in front of the City Constabulary’s Regent Street, Bourda office, on Sunday.

Marlon Fredricks, 34, a resident of Tiger Bay, Georgetown, was according to reports shot and killed in the presence of his mother who had gone to the outpost to visit him.

On Saturday, a constable stationed at the City Constabulary headquarters, was on patrol when he saw Fredricks who was wanted for questioning on King Street, also in the city.

Upon recognising the constable, Fredricks who was also a vendor, allegedly ran and the patrol vehicle gave chase and caught him on Robb Street, where a scuffle ensued.

In the vicinity of Colours Boutique, the vendor reportedly tried to take away the constable’s 9mm pistol that was in his rightside pants pocket.

As a result, a round was accidentally

discharged from the pistol. A police patrol arrived on the scene minutes after and assisted in subduing Fredricks who was subsequently taken into custody by the constabulary.

“He was a mental case for a while now and was even in clinic but stopped going a while now. On Saturday when they were beating him he said since he was one year old people wanted to kill him and that he wanted to die,” one eyewitness said.

Chief Constable Foo confirmed that the incident occurred and that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has been called in to investigate the circumstances that led to the man’s demise. Foo said that preliminary information received indicates that the man fled shortly after the lockup was opened.

Relatives said Fredricks attended St. Joseph’s High School and President’s College.

He had successfully completed eight CXC subjects but had been suffering from a mental condition for quite some time. He

was said to be a drug addict who used to buy and sell small items from Chinese shops.

Police said Fredricks who was in custody for assaulting a peace officer and simple larceny, allegedly forced his way outside of the lockup when it was opened to let out another prisoner to use the toilet.

A struggle reportedly ensued between the victim and the lance corporal who tried to restrain him and in the process the prisoner (victim) ran out the outpost and was fatally shot once in the lower back by the lance corporal.

The body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem tomorrow.

The service revolver used in the shooting, along with eight live rounds and a spent shell have been handed over to the police.

Tain campus to introduce crop-protection programme FARMERS from across Berbice will now be provided with the opportunity to be trained and certified in crop protection.

According to the Director of the University of Guyana Berbice campus Gomathinayagam Subramanian, a special certification pro-

gramme has been drafted to engage farmers in Berbice with mostly practical training on crop protection.

“The certification programme is only for farmers and it does not contain much reading or writing. It is designed in a way that farmers can do the practicals which are expected to start this academic year in September,” Subramanian explained.

Registration for the programme will soon commence and will cost farmers $50,000 each. The director noted that persons who are not farmers

are also welcome to join.

“Maybe in the future, we will expand to Turkeyen, but this is what the Berbice campus is going to offer. I already submitted everything to my faculty and they will take almost two months to confirm everything. But if other persons want to join they are free to do so; but it’s for mostly farmers” the director clarified.

This exercise is expected to last for six weeks and Subramania noted that the certificate that farmers will receive on completion of the course, will be recognised similarly as any other certificate received from the University of Guyana. (DPI)

rounds, five cellular phones and a motorcycle,” police said in a press statement.

The female was taken in custody and based on further information obtained, the La Penitence suspect who was identified as an active member of the Joint Services, was located and handed over to the police by his superiors.

He has since admitted to the commission of the crime and named an accomplice who has also been taken into custody.

Investigations are in progress.

Merkel could join Macron in Davos for epic clash with Trump

BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel is considering joining French President Emmanuel Macron at the World Economic Forum in Davos next week, in what could turn into an epic clash of competing world views with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Merkel, who has been struggling to put together a government since a German election in September, had been expected to skip the annual gathering of leaders, CEOs, bankers and celebrities in the Swiss Alps for a third straight year.

But after clinching a preliminary coalition agreement with the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) on Friday, German officials said Merkel could travel to Davos after all, possibly

setting up a major confrontation with Trump, who is expected to speak on the final day of the forum.

An appearance would signal Merkel’s return to the world stage after months of political limbo in which she has avoided the limelight and been dismissed by some in the German and international media as a spent force.

It would also allow her and Macron, who is scheduled to speak at the forum on Jan. 24, two days before Trump, to reaffirm their commitment to reforming the European Union (EU) after Britain’s decision to leave, and to defend liberal democratic values in the face of Trump’s “America First” policies.

Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert was coy last week when asked whether

she might attend the WEF, which will run from Jan. 23-26 under the banner “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World” and will attract some 60 heads of state and government.

This year’s forum will be opened by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Jan. 23. Britain’s Theresa May, Canada’s Justin Trudeau and Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu are also expected, as well as celebrities such as actress Cate Blanchett and musician Elton John.

Last year’s gathering took place in the week leading up to Trump’s inauguration and was headlined by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who signalled his readiness to fill the vacuum in global leadership created by America’s shift inward.

Car soars into second floor of building, gets lodged for hours

A California motorist was moving so fast when his car slammed into a center median on Sunday that the impact launched the vehicle into the second floor of a nearby building — where it stayed lodged for hours as rescuers extricated a person trapped inside.

“This is not a situation that happens every day,”

Capt. Stephen Horner of the Orange County Fire Authority told the Post by phone on Sunday. “A vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed hit the centre divider went airborne and landed on the second floor of a small office building.”

The airborne auto slammed into the Santa Ana building at about 5:30 a.m., causing a small blaze that the fire department quickly extinguished, Horner said.

One person inside the vehicle was able to squeeze out, but a second occupant spent an hour and

a half trapped in the car as its tail end dangled precariously out of the building, officials said.

A municipal worker used a front-loader to prop up the car’s back end while Los Angeles County Urban Search and Rescue teams freed the trapped man, according to Horner.

A crane was called in to rip the car from its loft, he said.

The building was empty at the time of the crash, and the car’s occupants sustained only minor injuries, Horner said.

Caribbean nationals can again apply for DACA WASHINGTON, CMC – The Trump administration says it will resume accepting renewal requests for a programme that shields from deportation young Caribbean and other immigrants who were brought illegally to the US as children.

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on Saturday said that “until further notice,” the Obama-era programme, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), “will be operated on the terms in place before it was rescinded” in September, when President Trump moved to end it.

“Due to a federal court order, USCIS has resumed accepting requests to renew a grant of deferred action under DACA,” the statement said.

“Until further notice, and unless otherwise provided in this

guidance, the DACA policy will be operated on the terms in place before it was rescinded on September 5, 2017.

“Individuals who were previously granted deferred action under DACA may request renewal by filing Form I-821D (PDF), Form I-765 (PDF), and Form I-765 Worksheet (PDF), with the appropriate fee or approved fee exemption request, at the USCIS designated filing location, and in accordance with the instructions to the Form I-821D (PDF) and Form I-765 (PDF),” the statement added.”

But USCIS said it is not accepting requests from individuals who have never before been granted deferred action under DACA. USCIS also said it will not accept or approve advance parole requests from DACA recipients.

“If you previously received DACA and your DACA expired on or after Sept. 5, 2016, you may still file your DACA request as a renewal request. Please list the date your prior DACA ended in the appropriate box on Part 1 of the Form I-821D.” But USCIS warned: “If you previously received DACA and your DACA expired before Sept. 5, 2016, or your DACA was previously terminated at any time, you cannot request DACA as a renewal (because renewal requests typically must be submitted within one year of the expiration date of your last period of deferred action approved under DACA).”

USCIS said applicants can, nonetheless, file a new initial DACA request in accordance with the Form I-821D

and Form I-765 instructions.

“To assist USCIS with reviewing your DACA request for acceptance, if you are filing a new initial DACA request because your DACA expired before September 5, 2016, or because it was terminated at any time, please list the date your prior DACA expired or was terminated on Part 1 of the Form I-821D, if available,” the statement said.

“Deferred action is a discretionary determination to defer a removal action of an individual as an act of prosecutorial discretion,” it added. “Further, deferred action under DACA does not confer legal status upon an individual and may be terminated at any time, with or without a Notice of Intent to Terminate, at DHS’s discretion.”

On Tuesday, Judge William Alsup of Federal District

Court in San Francisco ruled that the Trump administration must “maintain the DACA programme on a nationwide basis” as the legal challenge to the president’s decision goes forward.

In his ruling, the judge laid out a road map for the government that officials appeared to follow.

Judge Alsup said previous beneficiaries of DACA, known as Dreamers, must be allowed to renew their status in the programme, although the government would not be required to accept new applications from immigrants who had not previously submitted one.

President Barack Obama created the DACA programme in 2012 to give young Caribbean and other immigrants the ability to work legally in the United States.

In attempting to end it in September, Trump argued that Obama’s actions were unconstitutional and an overreach of executive power.

But critics of Trump’s decision to end the policy later sued the administration, saying that shutting down the program was arbitrary and done without following the proper legal procedures.

The legal battle is one piece of a fierce debate in Washington. Democrats and Republicans have sparred for months about how to provide relief for about 800,000 immigrants who could face deportation, the Times said.

Trump had met with lawmakers on Tuesday afternoon, in an hour-long televised meeting, to begin negotiations before Judge Alsup handed down his ruling.

Beckles made the statement as the fallout continues over United States President Donald Trump’s reported remarks about Hait , El Salvador and African nations.

“The democratic, nation-building debt the American nation owes the Caribbean, and the Haitian nation in particular, that resides at its core, is not expected to be repaid but must be respected,” said Sir Hilary in a statement on the weekend.

“Any nation without a nominal notion of its own making can never comprehend the forces that fashion it origins,” adding, that Haiti’s Caribbean vision “illuminated America’s way out of its colonial darkness.

“This is the debt President Trump’s America owes Toussaint L’Ouverture’s Haiti,” he said. “It’s a debt of philosophical clarity and political maturity. It’s a debt of how to rise to its best human potential. It’s a debt of exposure to higher standards. Haiti is really America’s

“The President’s truth making troops might not know, and probably care little for the fact that Haitian people were first in this modern world to build a nation completely free of the human scourge of slavery and native genocide,” the UWI Vice Chancellor stated.

said. “The American Independence Declaration of 2nd July, 1776, reinforced slavery as the national development model for the future. The Haitian Independence Declaration, 1st January, 1804, defined slavery a crime and banished it from its borders.”

The UWI Vice Chancellor said Haiti, then, became the first nation in the world to enforce a provision of personal democratic freedom for all, “and did so at a time when America was deepening its slavery roots.

“The USA, therefore, should daily bow before Haiti and thank it for the lessons it taught in how to conceptualise and create a democratic political and social order,” he said.

“Having built their nation on the pillars of property rights in humans, and realising a century later that slavery and freedom could not coexist in the same nation, Americans returned to the battlefield to litigate the century’s bloodiest defining and deciding civil war.

Sir Hilary said Haiti was and will remain “this hemisphere’s mother of modern democracy; and the Caribbean, the cradle of the first ethical civilisation.

“For President Trump, therefore, to define the Caribbean’s noble heroes of human freedom, whose sacrifice empowered and enlightened his nation in its darkest days, as a site of human degradation, is beyond comprehension,” he said.

“It is a brutal bashing of basic truths that are in need, not of violation, but celebration.

“Haiti, then, is mankind’s monument to its triumphant rise from the demonic descent into despair to the forging of its first democratic dispensation,” he added. “It is home to humanity’s most resilient people, who are the persistent proof of the unrelenting intent of the species to let freedom rain and reign.”

“Thankfully, many fine souls dedicated to social justice have risen to ‘write this wrong’

into the public record. “ In taking comfort in recalling a line “drawn on the highway of history,” he said: “In this 2018 White House attempt to diminish Caribbean Civilisation, let’s read aloud a part of William Wordsworth’s 1802 celebratory sonnet to Toussaint L’Ouverture of Haiti, the greatest democracy mind of modernity. “’. . . though fallen thyself, never to rise again/Live and take comfort/ Thou have left behind Powers that will work

for thee/Air, earth, and skies/ There’s not a breathing of the common wind that will forget thee/ thou have great allies/thy friends are exultation, agonies, and love, and man’s unconquerable mind.’”

On Saturday, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) joined the avalanche of criticisms about Trump’s reported remarks, saying it was “deeply disturbed” by the use of “derogatory and repulsive language by the US President.

THERE are pivotal moments in a nation’s history that define its moral character, sense of well-being, and sense of mission. These do not necessarily have to be instances that threaten the actual existence of the nation; but they can be described as challenges that will arise to test its better understanding of itself; its strengths as a people, and how well working together, can find solutions to whatever that heightened moment will be.

Taking the positive of togetherness as a national tool of action, can only serve to bring a nation that is polarised such as Guyana, many steps further in its long tortuous journey for unity and togetherness.

We submit that the current situation with re-

gard to the sugar industry is one such opportunity that provides that great platform for all of the nation’s principal leaders and stakeholders to demonstrate what genuine love for country is all about; not in an opportunistic or cosmetic way, but one that demonstrates care and compassion for the workers who are being made redundant – their future well-being, and those of their families.

Instead, what has been displayed is a shocking show of pretence of caring, from those who have been solely responsible for the greatest industrial tragedy of our nation’s history, as they seek to gain political mileage – a continuation of their savage use for decades, of a constituent base for selfish ends.

Supported by voices of

a dubious type, as they all seem to jockey for the spot of best critic.

Imagine a government in whose bequest a failed industry finds itself, being criticised for the sum total of all of its ills! This has to be one of the greatest deceptions of our time, by those seeking to exploit the ethnic sensitivities, and fears of the affected workers.

Let us understand this important fact. GuySuCo is an indelible print of the national socio-economic-cultural landscape of this nation that has been battered to a halt by a twopronged duo, of political party and union.

But it has to be salvaged, because the livelihoods of so many are involved. What must be reminded is that no amount of political deception will

provide the sugar workers with the wherewithal for a continuation of their lives, and those of their families and the continued viability of their respective communities.

Criticisms for criticism sake will not provide the answer, either. It is only a pooling together of all the requisite talents from all the sectors that will offer any solid hope for our sugar workers.

What is so difficult in the coming together of those who can assist in this urgent regard, in working together with the government to give sugar workers a viable life after sugar?

It would seem that the only interest that is constantly bellowed is the loss of business for those commercial entities in the sugar communities. But, what about the lives of

the workers who have to provide for their families?

Would it not be sensible to ensure their transition to a safer economic ground, so that all can be assured of a continuity of livelihoods?

Only working together with all concerned can make this possible.

Already, Secure Livelihoods Programmes are being established that will offer sugar workers a range of new skills. Such a strategy can be better fortified for the desired ends, with further inputs from our trade schools, and technical vocational institutions.

We are certain that this will be forthcoming, as

well as assistance from other skills trainers.

At this point, we must ask where is the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) whose input in the debacle of the sugar industry is well documented. Where is their plan of action, as the former administration that managed this once proud national industry? By failing to submit such a document, they can be seen as abandoning a grave national responsibility.

Remember, that GuySuCo is the business of the nation. But it has to be managed efficiently for its proper benefit.

Caribbean activists welcome Inter-American Court opinion on LGBTI rights THE Caribbean Forum for Liberation and Acceptance of Genders and Sexualities (CariFLAGS) celebrates the recent advisory opinion by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) which referred to its constant case law, whereby sexual orientation and gender identity are protected categories against discrimination under the Inter-American Convention on Human Rights. It stated that any discriminatory rule, act or practice based on these characteristics of an individual are prohibited.

The release noted that the right to gender and sexual

identity is tied to the concept of freedom and the capacity of human beings for self-determination and to freely choose the options and circumstances that make sense of their existence, according to each person’s choices and beliefs. It spoke boldly to the right to legal recognition of one’s gender identity and name-change procedures and affirmed that “the recognition of gender identity by the state is key to guaranteeing the full enjoyment of human rights by trans people.” It also spoke to equal marriage, noting that countries “must recognise and guarantee the rights that are derived from a family bond between people

of the same sex”. The court held that the way in which the convention addresses discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation cannot be conditional upon religious or philosophical beliefs.

The court’s advisory is timely, particularly in light of the current concerted efforts of activists globally, in the Caribbean and at national levels to end stigma and discrimination that adversely impact the enjoyment of basic human rights.

Although only binding in the jurisdictions that are parties to the convention, the advisory’s importance and historic significance must not go unnoticed by the Region.

We urge our governments, all people of the Caribbean as well as our key partners in development, to continue to and scale up all efforts to ensure that our societies are constructed on the principles of social justice, equality, mutual respect, inclusion and participation.

CariFLAGS calls for leadership and cooperation at all levels to engender and promote the legislative, administrative, and judicial reforms needed to adapt our local legal systems, laws and policies towards the advancement of recognition and promotion of rights for all. New jobs are being created -- Nagamootoo urges sugar workers not to lose hope

NEW jobs are being created, said Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, as he urged redundant sugar workers not to lose hope.

Writing in his weekly column “My Turn” published this Sunday, the prime minister said investment agreements were entered into for 136 projects valued $187 billion via the Ministry of Business last year.

According to the prime minister, 40 of these became operational by the end of 2017. He said while some of the redundant sugar workers could be absorbed into ancillary work, many others could be retrained and prepared for work as independent contractors and as peasant cane and cashcrop farmers.

Already, he said, some 500 former sugar workers have been engaged for possible retraining in fields such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and small business enterprises.

“They will prove that they are not incapable of doing other jobs,” he noted.

(GAWU) has recently somersaulted its position at the announcement by President David Granger last week, on the severance package which will be paid to workers this month.

“The union/party leaders

were caught off-guard by the announcement, so they changed their chant from ‘pay severance’ to ‘pay severance right NOW’,” the prime minister said.

He said GAWU was convinced that GuySuCo has no money to pay, much less to pay workers at the moment.

“They knew that the government would be under pressure to trim allocations for various ministries to find the additional $2 billion to meet immediate payment in the face of a current budget deficit,” he said.

He added: “Sensible onlookers were baffled that a union could actually frustrate payment of severance to affected workers, but it is opposition politricks to feed on the hardships of workers, and to channel their disaffection into political anger and rage against a young, incoming government that is doing all it possibly could to cushion the impact of the crisis that it had inherited.”

He said since the coalition government took office in May 2015, the fate of the sugar industry has been on the front burner.

It was recognised that the sugar industry has been historically a political battleground and an arena for ethnic mobilisation. He said the government had anticipated the high expectations that severance should be paid, and has been considering various options.

“As an interim measure, our coalition government budgeted an additional sum of six billion, three hundred million ($6,300,000,000) for GuySuCo, of which five hundred million ($500,000,000) was for an advance on the severance bill,” he noted.

He said from the getgo, the government tried to grapple with the “sad situation in which we met the sugar industry”.

He noted that within four months of taking office, the government es-

tablished a Commission of Inquiry; then tabled in the National Assembly a State Paper outlining the broad policy for restructuring of the industry.

It has since set up a Special Purpose Unit to manage the reform.

“I believe that investors will soon come on board at Skeldon, Rose Hall, Enmore and Wales and that new opportunity will be opened for sugar workers and their children,” Prime Minister Nagamootoo said.

Berbice cyclist killed in accident PEDAL cyclist Devenana Hardeo, 53, of Number 69 Village Squatting Area, Corentyne, Berbice, has died after being struck down by a car on the Number 71 Village Public Road, Berbice on Sunday.

Police in a release said the car HC 6790 driven by a 25-year-old resident of Tarlogie Village, Corentyne, and the pedal cyclist were proceeding north along the western carriageway with the cyclist in the lead when, it is alleged, the car which was speeding struck the bicycle from the rear.

As a result of the impact, the cyclist fell onto the road surface and sustained injuries. He was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body is at the said hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem while the driver, who was tested for alcohol and found negative, is in police custody assisting with the investigation.

From Oil shock to Oil stun: Popping the champagne bottle too early?

THE history books can tell us that austere measures of Structural Adjustment started in 1988-1989 for Guyana, were the impetus to take the country to economic recovery. A testimony of the Washington Consensus Policies. Its initiation, as some would recall, was rocky, since unintended consequences of import-substitution development amplified with the oil shock of 1973.

Nevertheless, the country reformed a bit and grew after at an average of 7% per year between 1991-1997. The change in government came in 1992, much to the appreciation of a country that could benefit from foreign investment and other goodwill that were gaining momentum.

Fast-forward and we are here again. As history would have it, and much to the appreciation of the incumbent, Guyana had an oil stun -- ExxonMobil announced significant oil and gas finds in May 2015.

The suggestion by the IMF is that Guyana, once oil

begins to flow, will move from a current account deficit to an almost immediate surplus resulting from exports. Another example is, if Guyana requires the work of institutions such as the United Nations, they would have to pay these institutions (through government) for continuing their work here, as the country will quickly attain Net Contributor Country status. Investing companies and countries will increase their representation here in the form of consulates and embassies, as has already been the case…and so on and so forth. These are significant feats in themselves. Things will no longer be the same for most it is hoped, and some have begun to pop the champagne ahead of time, and I guess why not?

The caution though is to have history not repeat itself. The government has therefore taken the step to indicate it will develop a comprehensive framework to manage the oil wealth.

This move is welcomed by many international agencies, aware of the chal-

lenges with managing such immediate exponential inflows. Dare I say however that it is also as critically important to avoid the missteps of the past where the institutional framework was found wanting when there was a transition from import-substitution development to export orientation under structural adjustment on the course

to economic recovery. A focus on systems and institutions are therefore with full merit, despite political opposition gimmicks as charade for economic policy. Let us not discount strengthening, from the procurement commission, press freedom and the financial institutions Act to the Local Government

Commission and devolutions of powers that are expected in the establishment of new towns, among others. One should not see these endeavours as separate from the wider context of institutional strengthening as a formidable part of governance that would be necessary, as was already mandated in the absence of the oil stun.

Bossogo and others in 2003 catalogued reforms of the early economic recovery. At that time, an educated guess is that the country had to move ahead with the ERP reforms in which there was no choice but to trust in public offices and officers. That did not work out well. In fact, trust is at the core of most development issues and conflict, locally.

Nevertheless, it was soon discovered that the reform was just to be the preconditions and not the guarantee of economic recovery, as noted by Economist Donna Danns. Despite the economic growth in the early 1990s resulting from measures taken for economic recovery, dis-

tribution (spread of benefits) became a problem because of weaknesses in the institutional framework, among others. A typical case in point was income inequality. Collin Constantine showed for Guyana recently that despite the high growth from 1991 to 1997, by 1998 the bottom 50% income earners lost half of their mean incomes. He proved as well that the top 10% owned 41% of the total income. Additionally, the bottom 50% realised a mere 12.42% of total income by 2013. Furthermore, Constantine (2016) noted that increases in the mean incomes of the middle class were not based on ‘robust growth or a fairer distribution of income, but a collapse in mean income for the bottom 50%.’ Consequently, what that growth produced was richer and poorer Guyanese all at once. It is for this reason that distribution is so important; and the mechanism to ensure that this does not recur in the oil economy is why systems and institutions

are critical.

Following from the arguments above, more widespread and pervasive similar occurrences prompted institutions such as those in the UN system to promote pro-poor inclusive green growth development strategies. And, for whatever it is worth, corruption (perceived or real) must be kept at bay.

As we have also experienced, a legacy of informality and institutional weaknesses that festered corruption and hindered the trickle-down. Hence, to ensure benefits ‘trickle down’ they must be addressed institutionally for some level of system guarantee, irrespective of which government is at the helm. To this I say pop the champagne if you must, but also support the institutional developments that will ensure fairer distribution in the oil economy. ––Nigel Hughes schools Chartered accountant on registration of foreign company

WHILE branches of foreign companies are required by law to have registered agents and offices in a country, most overseas firms usually nominate their attorneys in a country within which they have interests as their registered agents.

This is according to prominent Attorney Nigel Hughes, who was at the time responding to comments made by Chartered Accountant and Attorney Christopher Ram in a Kaietuer News article published on Sunday.

The article in question carried the headline, “Major oil companies operating in Guyana did not even bother to incorporate domestic branch—but all of its subsidiaries stand to get big benefits—Ram.” Ram was referring to American oil giant Exxon-

Mobil’s subsidiary Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) and its affiliates, Hess Guyana Exploration Limited and CNOOC Nexen Petroleum Guyana Limited.

The newspaper quoted Ram as saying that “It is also worth noting that none of these three entities have incorporated a domestic company and each has its registered office at the same address – 62, Hadfield and Cross Streets, the same address as Hughes, Fields and Stoby, Attorneys-at-Law.” Hughes via social media platform, Facebook, said perhaps it has escaped the attention of Ram, the expert quoted by the newspaper, that all branches of external companies are required by law to have registered agents and offices in country.

Chartered Accountant and Attorney Christopher Ram Hughes said that the content of the article appears to disclose some degree of confusion, or perhaps miscomprehension about the difference between the reg-

istration of a branch of an external company and the incorporation of a subsidiary which the newspaper referred to in its article as a “domestic company”.

He said additional difficulty appears to have been encountered in relation to the requirements of the law for incorporation of an entity which the newspaper described as “domestic branch”.

Hughes explained that a branch office is not a separate legal entity from the parent company or corporation.

He said it is the presence of the parent within the jurisdiction, the process of registration ensures the legal presence of the parent in Guyana.

Hughes noted that it is the most direct and proximate legal presence of the external company on these shores.

Incorporation of a company, he said, is effected by the incorporation of a separate and distinct legal entity known as a limited liability company in Guyana.

He said this applies where a subsidiary is incorporated, adding that subsidiaries are not necessarily wholly owned by their parent and the laws make no such requirement.

The prominent attorney noted that the concept of “incorporation of a domestic branch” referred to in the article appears to have confused the direct presence of the parent company, by registration of the parent as an external company as against the incorporation of a subsidiary of the parent.

“The law does not contemplate or consider the incorporation of a branch, domestic or otherwise,” he

“It’s either a mammal or a reptile. It cannot be both,” Hughes noted.

Big cat stalks White Water RESIDENTS of the North West District village of White Water are on edge after a large cat, suspected to be a jaguar, tried to enter a family’s home on Saturday night.

Reports are that around 22:30hrs on Saturday, the cat was heard outside the home of a family and minutes later, it attempted to gain entry.

An alarm was raised and residents gathered at the house as some persons contemplated hunting down the animal. The village is located close to the Venezuelan border.

According to reports, the cat has so far

killed several fowls and dogs in the area and families are hesitant to send their children to school which is some distance from their homes.

A resident noted that last week, several children could not attend school because of the lonely path they normally have to walk on their way to the institution.

Villagers are of the opinion that the cat may have been roaming close to the village over the past two weeks, as several wood-cutters who were out in the forest last week had observed the fresh tracks known to be made by such an animal.

Curl Fete reaches out to two orphanages

GIRLS aged four to six at the St. Ann’s Orphanage and Joshua House last Saturday and Sunday received a number of haircare products and accessories following a back-to-school charity drive from Curl Fete Guyana.

The Curl Fete Natural Hair and Beauty Expo team, with the support of various businesses and individuals, spent time with the girls who had their hair braided, styled school-appropriately and were given supplies to maintain these styles.

Though not the typical back-to-school drive, Co-Founder of Curl Fete and Forensic Analyst, Tamika Henry, said that the

idea came about when a societal need was highlighted to the team by a friend.

“A friend of ours contacted us and said they went to a church service where they saw a couple of girls from an orphanage and their hair seemed unkempt. They asked us if we could step in and do something,” Henry related, pointing out that “We wanted to act almost immediately.”

Shortly after, the team put together a campaign to receive donations from the community, of items such as shampoo, conditioner, vaseline, moisturisers, combs, brushes, ribbons, bows and other hair products necessary for proper hair care.

Henry noted that al-

though some may see the provision of hair products and accessories to the less-fortunate to be minor, promoting pride in self-appearance is especially important for the development of self-confidence in young girls.

“When it comes to young women that are in a less than ideal situations, girls that are less fortunate, girls that have been displaced from their homes, a lot of persons focus on what they would term as their necessities: food, clothing, educational supplies,” Henry pointed out.

She then explained: “Those things are necessary and, obviously, these things need to be taken care of at first. But at a very young age, young

Two shot dead in Pomeroon

POLICE are investigating the murder of farmers, Ambrose Baharally, 28, called “Jadge” of Grant Stelling Hope, Lower Pomeroon River, and Martin Godette,23, of Friendship Canal, also Lower Pomeroon River, on Sunday.

Police in a release said both were shot to the head at around 15: 30 hours at Grant Stelling Hope, Lower Pomeroon River, allegedly by two males who were armed with handguns.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims were seen conversing with the suspects about 15:10hrs. Shortly

after, two loud explosions were heard and the suspects were seen fleeing the scene by boat.

Police said the victims were discovered motionless and were taken to the Charity Public Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

The bodies are at the Suddie Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortems.

Investigators have retrieved a 9MM spent shell and a live ammunition at the scene.

Police say stringent efforts are being made to apprehend the suspects.

To date, the annual natural hair expo is utilised to showcase the best hair products and tips on how to care for hair, while promoting the embrace of different types of hair textures.

Henry said that for a long time, people would only see the negativity in curly or kinky hair, therefore, to empower women and girls to have natural hair and feel confident, the festival was started in Guyana.

‘She soon get belly’ THE Ministry of Social Protection has a parenting skills programme which is held in different regions of Guyana through the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA). The participants are parents who have either been recommended by social workers or who’ve come to the attention of the CPA through one reason or another.

The objective of the programme is not to blame or shame parents because of their lack of parental knowledge, but to empower parents to discover and acquire new parenting skills through shared knowledge, self-examination and by learning facts about good parenting.

Some parents need help because they do not understand what their parental duties are, or how their actions and words can negatively impact their child’s future. This is Alana’s story.

I was nearly 13 years old when I over-

heard my mother talking to her friend Carla on the phone: she was talking about me and my heart sank when I heard her say ‘… yes girl, she hips spreading and she getting breast... she soon get belly’.

Back then I thought: so this is the future my mother has already mapped out for me in her mind and I did not understand. Why would she want that kind of life for me? A life with no purpose: a life with no hope.

I was entering the second year of my secondary school and yes, she was right, my body was changing. It was difficult enough getting used to the changes and all that came along with them, without overhearing her comments which merely confirmed for me, what I had felt deep inside all along: my mother did not have my best interest at heart.

It’s just as well that my grandmother on my father’s side took the time and cared enough to help me out the best she could.

Granny Evie was always happy to have me stay by her and although it was just a small bedroom with a front room and kitchen, it was ‘home’ and I knew I was more than welcome there; and I knew I was very much loved.

When I think of Granny Evie, I realise the value of that type of love. The love that Granny Evie gave me cannot be bought or sold. It was a love that had time and patience, a love that is so important to a growing girl. Granny Evie made me believe I could achieve anything to which I would put my mind. She made me feel beautiful and special. She gave me confidence to do well and to be proud of my achievements. If it weren’t for her input, I would have been left in the hands of my mother and would have followed the path she set before me: a teenage mother with very little education and no prospect for work, for further education or betterment in life.

I would probably end up living in a small rented room with my “child-father” which would no doubt lead to stress and frustration. And then, when we got fed up of each other and he moved out and left me, I most probably would find a next man to mind me and my child, then before long I’d

have a child for him too, which would then make four of ‘we’ in one little room living a frustrated lifestyle.

I know the pattern all too well because it is the story of my mother’s life. The only difference is: I was her ‘third born’ child for her ‘second child-father’. And we were living a frustrating lifestyle in that little room when Granny Evie took me to her home for a while, which turned into months and then years. Visits to my mother occurred only at weekends and on school holidays.

I am now age 17 and because of this intervention I can proudly say that I have not got a ‘belly’, neither do I intend to be getting one anytime soon. My outlook is on higher things in life; I have goals to accomplish and a life to build for myself, thanks to Granny Evie’s guidance and love.

Linden robbery suspects held –– expected to appear in court today

POLICE have arrested the suspects of a robbery under arms committed on a miner on December 31, 2017, at Republic Avenue, MacKenzie, Linden, in Festival City, Georgetown on Friday.

The robbery was captured on CCTV cameras. Police in a release said the arrest was as a result of intensive collaborative work between detectives of Linden, CID Headquarters, Georgetown, and East Coast cops.

According to a police source, the three suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday.

The suspects, one of whom is an ex-policeman, were positively identified on Friday during an identification parade by the victim who was gun-butted and relieved of his jewellery.

A motorcar which was stolen during

the commission of a robbery at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, was found in the possession of the suspects when they were arrested.

“Surprisingly, even though the victim’s vehicle engine and chassis numbers corresponded with his registration, a purportedly faked registration was produced by one of the suspects for the said vehicle,” police said Police also said the suspects, ages 29 and 30 of Unity Place, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, are scheduled to be placed on several identification parades within the next few days in relation to several other carjackings.

The police, under Commander Kareembaksh, have also stepped up their mobile patrol, primarily to rid Linden of criminal elements who come from other areas.

Youths up the discourse on social justice

T HE S c h o o l o f t h e Nations has partnered with the Nancy Campbell Academy in Canada to promote social justice and youth empowerment through training in the performing arts and through the World Citizenship course.

The Nancy Campbell Academy is a private residential high school located in Stratford, Canada, that hinges on tenets of the Bahá’í faith.

For years, students of the academy have travelled to countries to engage in service activities.

On January 3, six students travelled to Guyana to hone the inherent value for community service of ‘Nations’ sixth form students. The group has taught students how to harness the performing arts as a mechanism for social discourse, while allowing for introspection.

According to an accompanying teacher of the academy, Roya Sadeghi, “A lot of people are naturally drawn to the arts, but it cannot be used as a tool on its own.”

As such, she explained that the arts (primarily song and dance) are used to illustrate social issues such as rac-

The aim of the performances is to draw people and raise awareness on the topics, but, as another representative of the academy, Anita Sadeghi, explained, “The arts are used as a tool to express what is latent within oneself.”

So far, the group (both Nancy Campbell and Nations’ students) visited the Sophia Detention Centre and the Giftland Mall, seeking to foster discourse and share their messages.

Though the target population is primarily

youths aged 11-15, the teachings are universal.

The final performances will be done at the relocated Brickdam Secondary in East La Penitence, on Monday and at the School of the Nations, on Tuesday.

Aside from performances, Anita related that the buck does not stop there but rather they signal the beginning of the rest of the programme. The Canadian youths are also training the locals through the Ruhi Institute (a Bahai educational institution), to become involved in the Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Programme.

This programme seeks to build capacity within the youths and embedding the “twin pillars” of academic excellence and a moral

framework.

The Nancy Campbell representatives highlighted though the exchange culminates on Wednesday, Janu-

ary 17, the short period has been characterised by immense reciprocal learning.

School of the Nations Director, Dr. Brian O’Toole affirmed, “Alot of our kids have bought into it and there has been the great development of kinship.”

He noted that the performances are vignette and characterised by their ability to illustrate the topics and engage with the audience He explained that the academy has held relations with the local school for a number of years, but this exchange marks the beginning of strengthened partnership between the two.

The programme also aligns well with the school’s impetus for community service and civic engagement.

GuySuCo staffers complete mental health training A TEAM of medical personnel and social workers from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) graduated Friday from a four-day training course in mental health.

A closing ceremony, where the graduates were issued their certificates, was held at GuySuCo’s staff club at its La Bonne Intention (LBI) head office.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, related that Guyana is affected by a scourge of mental health issues, particularly in the area of suicide.

“Therefore, for this reason, the government since assuming office is taking strides to address it. Hence, the programme is necessary and timely, especially since GuySuCo is going through a phase at this time,” Dr. Cummings noted.

She added that the aim of this training is to provide non-specialised doctors with the requisite skills and knowledge to better screen patients and provide diagnostic assessments that include

treatment and long-term care for persons living with mental ailments.

The members of the team are now skilled in areas of depression psychosis, epilepsy, child and adolescent mental and behavioural disorders, dementia, self-harm suicide and other mental health issues. These conditions are seen in 95 per of mental health cases.

“This programme imbues non-specialised doctors, like yourself, with a confidence that you previously didn’t have in your field of mental health. The strategic aims of this mental health learning schedule are to improve the general practitioners’ skills and confidence, the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions using evidence-based strategies and tools, increase the physician’s awareness of community mental health resources,” Dr Cummings said.

The minister emphasised that suicide is everybody’s business and pointed out that the ministry’s mental health institute will soon come on board.

“So for those mental issues we don’t want persons going to the ‘mad house’.

The acute cases will go to the Georgetown Public Hospital but for chronic cases we’ll have them dealt with at the mental health institute,” she said.

IMPLEMENT SKILLS LEARNT The minister further encouraged the graduates to put into practice the skills they have garnered and let the drive for excellence be the hallmark of their work.

Director of the Ministry’s Mental Health Unit, Dr. Util Richmond-Thomas, stated that the training is the first mental health training targeting GuySuCo workers.

She explained that the ministry is working very hard to address human resource needs in order to take care of mental health issues nationwide.

“Currently, we have six psychiatrists from a population of over 750,000 persons and that is less than one psychiatrist per 100,000 per-

So there’s a scarce supply of psychiatrists, psychologist and occupational therapists as well; so we have lots of deficiencies in the mental health team,” Dr Richmond-Thomas said.

However, she is optimistic that the fate of

mental health issues will change.

She pointed out that currently, there are five persons being trained as psychiatrists and within another three years, four of them will help at the national level.

In addition, she added that the University of Guyana has implemented several psychology programmes, among which is a master’s in psychology, which will begin in 2018.

“These graduates will beef up resources for mental health. In the meantime, we need to address our mental health needs and issues, and that is where you graduates come in. We expect you to go out and practise what you have learnt, work to address the mental health issues,” Dr. Richmond-Thomas charged the graduates.

but has always been an educational, social and community development, and health institution.

“We started building community centres and manning them with welfare and social welfare officers, who were trained overseas. The absence of community centre activities in the industry doesn’t allow for persons who have their daily frustrations, an outlet to exhale. Therefore, health is fundamental to our production,” he said.

The human resources director noted too that there has always been stress in the industry, but the recent development is a new dispensation geared at taking the industry forward.

The four-day programme was a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Health and GuySuCo and saw participation from estates, including Rose Hall, Skeldon, East Demerara, Wales and Uitvlugt. (DPI)

DPP Chambers disposed of 150 cases in 2017

LAST year, 150 cases were disposed of and 122 received attention in the courts while 28 cases were deemed nolle prosequi by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

According to statistics from the Chamber of the DPP, of these 122 cases, 73 were presented from the Demerara Assizes, 24 from the Berbice Assizes and 25 from the Essequibo Assizes.

There were 64 cases for murder, two cases for the offence of manslaughter, 29 cases for rape of a child under 16, eight cases of attempt to commit murder, nine cases of rape, seven cases of sexual activity with a child family member, and one case each for the offences of carnal knowledge of girl under 15, setting fire to public building and abduction.

Statistics revealed that there were 48 guilty pleas, 23 not-guilty verdicts by jury, six hung juries, 25 convictions, 27 formal verdicts of not guilty and four aborted trials. “From these 122 cases, there were 145 accused persons, 48 of these persons pleaded guilty, 25 of them were convicted; formal verdicts of not guilty were delivered in relation to 27 of these. There were 23

not-guilty verdicts by jury, six hung verdicts and four aborted trials,� the office of the DPP noted.

The January 2018 Criminal Assizes for Demerara commenced on January 9, 2018 and there are 229 cases listed to be heard during the session.

Justice Navindra Singh, Justice James Bovell-Drakes and Madam Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall have been rostered to sit during this assizes.

The February 2018 Berbice Criminal Assizes will commence in February, Tuesday 13, while the October 2017 criminal session continues before Madam Justice Jo-Ann Barlow.

The Essequibo Criminal Assizes is expected to open in February, Tuesday 6, while Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry will continue the October Assizes.

APPEALS Last year, the Chambers of the DPP appeared in 66 matters in the Court of Appeal.

Of these 66, four appellants were allowed their appeals and had their convictions and sentences set aside.

Another four appellants withdrew their applications

The Chambers of the DPP disposed of 150 cases last year (Adrian Narine photo) for bail pending their appeals, while four other appellants were refused their applications for bail.

A magnificent 180 runs opening wicket stand between captain Prithvi Shaw and Manjot Kalra was the cornerstone of India’s thumping 100 runs victory over Australia in a battle of former champions on the second day of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2018 at the Bay Oval, Tauranga.

In front of broadcast cameras, Shaw scored a fine 94 and Kalra contributed 86 as India rattled up an imposing 328 for seven in 50 overs. …Jagaurs, Pride settle for draw; champions extend points tally to 145.4 BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) – Tagenarine Chanderpaul completed his maiden first-class hundred, but newly-crowned champions Guyana Jaguars had to settle for a draw against Barbados Pride in the Regional 4-Day Championship on Sunday here.

Chanderpaul hit an undefeated 101 and wicketkeeper/batsman Anthony Bramble slammed a pugnacious 74 to lead Jaguars to 263 for five in their second innings before they declared about 50 minutes before lunch on the final day of their ninth-round match at Kensington Oval.

The left-handed opener, son of legendary West Indies left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who is also a member of the Jaguars line-up for this match, reached his landmark from 275 balls, when he swung Jonathan Carter to deep mid-wicket for the last of his nine boundaries to prompt the declaration.

He shared 115 for the fifth wicket with Bramble, whose 78-ball innings in close to 2 ½ hours included four fours and five sixes.

Set a highly improbable victory target of 362 in a minimum of 73 overs, Pride reached 208 for four in their second innings before the two sides decided it was pointless to continue.

West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite hit the top score of 54 for Pride,

their captain Shamarh Brooks supported with 40, Shayne Moseley made 28, Roston Chase was not out on 23 and Carter added 20.

Classy Kohli resists as India reach 183 for five in Centurion

PRETORIA (Reuters) Young South African seamer Lungi Ngidi took his first Test wicket but India captain Virat Kohli led the resistance for the tourists as they reached 183 for five at the close of day two of the second test in Pretoria on Sunday.

India trail South Africa by 152 runs having bowled their hosts out for 335 just before lunch on a slow wicket that has bounce, but little lateral movement.

Kohli will resume his innings on 85 not out along with all-rounder Hardik Pandya (11 not out) as the pair seek to eke out a first innings lead in the knowledge that batting last on a wicket already showing variable bounce will be a challenge.

India have tried to be positive with the bat, but have lost wickets at regular intervals, with the top seven so far failing to provide support for Kohli.

The openers took the score to 28 before losing their first wicket when Lokesh Rahul (10) was

Alex Hales’s previous ODI best of 171 during his 151ball knock as England cruised home with seven balls to spare in a morale-boosting victory, after a demoralising 4-0 loss in the Ashes tests.

After being put in to bat in the opening ODI of the five-match series, Australia opener Aaron Finch compiled his ninth hundred in the 50-over format to help the hosts to a total of 304 for eight.

Jacobs snatches career-best 12 for 157 to dispose of Leewards K I N G S TO N , J a m a i c a , (CMC) – Leg-spinner Damion Jacobs snatched a career-best 12-wicket haul as Jamaica Scorpions needed just an hour to dispose of Leeward Islands Hurricanes by 57 runs in their ninth round match in the Regional Four-Day Championship here Sunday.

Chasing 262 for victory, Leewards resumed the final day at Sabina Park on 159 for six needing a further 103 runs but were dismissed for

204 on the stroke of the first hour of play.

Jacobs, the West Indies A spinner, grabbed three of the four remaining Hurricanes wickets to end with five for 83 and post match figures of 12 for 157.

Part-time off-spinner, John Campbell, whose three quick wickets late on Saturday’s penultimate day turned the game in Scorpions’ favour, added another scalp to his column to finish with four for 40.

Liverpool end Man City’s unbeaten run in seven-goal thriller

(REUTERS) - Liverpool scored three times in nine minutes on the way to a dramatic 4-3 win over Manchester City on Sunday which ended the Premier League leaders’ unbeaten start to the season.

Liverpool struck after less than 10 minutes when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain surged forward from midfield to collect a neat layoff from Roberto Firmino and send a low shot past City keeper Ederson.

Leroy Sane equalised shortly before the interval, but Liverpool blew City away after halftime with Firmino chipping Ederson to restore the home side’s lead and Sadio Mane striking from the edge of the box.

Egypt international Mohamed Salah looked to have completed the rout when he collected Ederson’s clearance and sent the ball sailing back over the stranded keeper’s head, but City substitute Bernardo Silva grabbed one back and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan prodded home in stoppage-time.

City’s first league defeat in 23 games this season left them 15 points clear at the top, ahead of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, (CMC) – Trinidad and Tobago Red Force suffered their third straight defeat in the Regional Four-Day Championship, when they collapsed to a heavy innings and 38-run defeat to Windward Islands Volcanoes here Sunday.

Resuming the final day of the ninth round contest at the National Stadium on 93 for two in their second innings and requiring a further 101 runs to avoid an innings defeat, Red Force surrendered without so much as a whimper – bowled out for a paltry 156, about 15 minutes after lunch.

They were ripped apart by seamer Sherman Lewis (3-20) and former Test off-spinner Shane Shillingford (3-52) who both snared three-wicket hauls while left-arm spinner Larry Edward ended with two for 26.

Opener Amir Jangoo, unbeaten on 58 overnight, added just 11 and no other batsman showed any enterprise as Yannic Cariah failed to add to his overnight 11, and all-rounder Imran Khan (11) and wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo (10) barely managed to make double figures.

Already following on by 194 after an equally poor showing in the first innings, Red Force needed a huge effort to avoid defeat but it never came.

They are now unbeaten in four outings.

Diamond Upsetters FC recognise U-11 team THE Diamond Upsetters Football Club (DUFC), a new affiliate of the East Bank Football Association (EBFA) on Saturday afternoon last at the Diamond Community Centre, recognised the efforts of their Under-11 team which ended fourth in the just concluded Ralph Green/EBFA Under-11 League.

In its first year of competition since being formed, the club has announced its presence in no uncertain manner as a real contender in the EBFA, but more importantly, is striving to ensure that the youths in the Diamond area are guided in the right way and in this instance, through football.

The awards ceremony which saw Coach Kevin Padmore Snr. being complimented for his efforts in guiding the team, also saw the players being presented with their participatory medals for the U-11 tournament.

DUFC’s Joshua Dias ended the league as the best goalkeeper and was presented with his trophy and backpack, one of five individual awardees for the league; the others being

MAHENDRA Bhagwandin opened his 2018 season by winning the Lusignan Golf Club’s (LGC) Trophy Stall-sponsored tournament on Saturday at the club’s facility, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

In conditions which, according to some golfers, were very difficult, Bhagwandin registered a Gross 88 and Net 66 to cart off top honours, ahead of Pandit Ravi who scored a gross 88 and Net 70, and Guyana Cup Open eight-time champion, Avinash Persaud, who returned a Gross 70. Mike Mangal ended fourth with a Gross of 81 and Net 68.

LGC’s president Aleem Hussain, speaking at the simple presentation ceremony, thanked the golfers for coming out and participating in the Trophy Stall tournament, which was the first for the year, and noted that the golf season in Guyana does not start until the middle of the year, but he and his team worked to ensure that this year’s season teed off during the first month of the year and promised that there will be yet another tournament before the end of January.

Heyliger retains place as Canada vie for World Cup qualifier TORONTO, Canada - Guyanese Dilon Heyliger has retained his place in the Canada senior men’s squad, set to vie for supremacy in the upcoming World Cricket League Division 2 tournament to be held in Namibia from February 8-15.

The team will depart for South Africa on January 24-25 to prepare for the tournament.

However, there is no place for his Guyanese counterpart, Mark Montfort, who was part of the squad which played four matches against a University of West Indies Select XI last month in Barbados.

Canada will compete against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kenya, Namibia, Nepal and Oman, with the top two teams in the tournament advancing to the 10-team ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018, which will be played in Zimbabwe from March 4-25. Two teams from this competition will qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to be staged in the United Kingdom.

Heyliger, a former Guyana T20 player who also represented his homeland at both the Under-15 and 19 levels, turned out for Brampton Masters in last season’s Toronto District Cricket Association (TDCA) Super 9 tournament.

WITH six days remaining for the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC)/NexGen Global Marketing (NGGM) six-fight `Bad Blood’ fight card, the local fighters appearing on the January 20 event is now winding down their training schedule for what is anticipated to be a night of fistic fury.

The local fighters – Dexter `De Kid’ Marques, Dexter `Cobra’ Gonsalves and Elton `The Bully’ Dharry – will oppose their counterparts from Venezuela, while Shawn Corbin (Guyana) faces Trinidad and Tobago’s Sheldon Lawrence.

Two Barbadian fighters – Anderson Emmanuel and Keithland King – will face off with Guyana’s James Moore and Anson Green, respectively.

Roger Federer won last year’s Australian Open after a six-month injury lay-off ROGER Federer says his age helps take the pressure off as he heads into the Australian Open tipped to win.

The Swiss five-time champion won his first major title for five years with a stunning run in Melbourne last year.
