AG calls out Norton’s ‘nonsensical’ positions on voters list HIGHLIGHTING that every step in the electoral process in Guyana is legally determined, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, S.C., on Tuesday, called out Opposition Leader Aubrey

Norton for his “uneducated” positions on the Official List of Electors, accusing him of creating unnecessary tensions in the country.

The Legal Affairs Minister made these remarks during his weekly Face-

book programme “Issues in The News” in response to the recent pronouncements made by the Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton who said that his party will not support any elections unless the Official List of Electors (OLE)

is changed.

During the programme, Nandlall shared sentiments he said were also expressed by President, Dr Irfaan Ali that nothing is wrong with the current voters list, noting that the threat of no elections by

Mr. Norton should be ignored.

AG Nandlall maintained that the country is governed by a constitution, adding that the election, whether general, regional or local, is a legal process for which the timeframe is fixed by law. The list used, he maintained, is also a matter of law.

The conduct of elections, Nandlall noted further, is entrusted not to politicians but to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) as an independent constitutional body.

“GECOM must have a list ready at the appropriate time fixed by the law, and must have the machinery ready at the appropriate time fixed by the law for elections,” Nandlall said.

As it relates to the List of Electors, the Attorney General noted that there was a ruling from the Court that has direct bearing on the said list.

In his explanation, the Attorney General said there was a clear pronouncement made by Guyana’s Chief Justice that names cannot be removed from the list on the basis of residency.

Additionally, he continued, once a person is 18 years and is a Guyanese, they are qualified and shall be registered.

Meanwhile, he added, if a person’s name is on the list, that person’s name can only be removed if that person dies. That, he said, is the law of the country.

It should be noted that the very list of electors which Norton and the A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) now condemns is the same list that was used in the 2011 and 2015 General and Regional Elections (GREs) which saw that coalition party gaining a one-seat majority in the former, and ultimately ascending to government in the latter year.

Added to this, AG Nandlall also said that the list was similarly used in the 2016 and 2018 Local Government Elections, when the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) trumped the APNU+AFC in both local government polls, and ultimately defeated them in the 2020 GREs. As it relates to the postponement of the Local Government Elections which were to be held in

Attorney General Anil Nandlall S.C. 2020, AG Nandlall underscored that a legal process was followed through with in which the Minister of Local Government issued an Order postponing the election in keeping with the law, after he received guidance from the GECOM that the conditions were not yet right.

“If you would recall, GECOM did not have a number of important officers at the time in its employment… including a Chief Elections Officer and a Deputy [Chief Elections Officer],” AG Nandlall said, highlighting the conditions which caused GECOM to report to the government that LGEs could not be facilitated as yet.

“So, Mr. Norton will not determine what type of list is used; the law determines what type of list is used and GECOM is responsible for the production of that type of list to satisfy the law.

“And that list must be compiled in accordance with the law,” Nandlall acknowledged The Minister of Legal Affairs reiterated that every step of the electoral process is a legal one and the legal chain must be followed “link by link” when it comes to elections.

“Mr Norton does not make sense when he makes these public pronouncements.

And he does his image no good, he does his constituents no good, he does his party no good when he continues to make these vacuous, uneducated outbursts.

“And he does it in this threatening way as if anybody is intimated by him, or he can have that impact,” Guyana’s Attorney General said, concluding that the Opposition Leader’s positions continues to create unnecessary tensions in the country.

British Airways coming in 2023; tickets already on sale

THE official flag carrier of the United Kingdom, British Airways, will commence scheduled flights to Guyana in the first quarter of 2023.

It is expected that the world-renowned airline’s operations will commence

by March 27, 2023, plying the Guyana route twice weekly while making stops in Caribbean Community (CARICOM) sister country, St. Lucia. A 777 200ER aircraft with the capacity for 332 passengers will be used for those flights.

This was announced, on Wednesday, by Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, during a media conference held at his ministry’s Wight’s Lane, Kingston, Georgetown office.

Edghill explained that while the service will begin in 2023, tickets will go on sale immediately to ensure adequate lead time and proper roll out of service.

“We are a gathered here to announce the successful completion of negotiations and today, 10th of August, tickets for Guyana and for London, via British Airways, goes on sale. British Airways is the new carrier to enter the Guyana market,” Minister Edghill told the media conference.

He added that the recent works and extensions on the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) were done with the anticipation of having such wide-bodied aircrafts operating in the country.

“That puts into perspective exactly why we did not accept the Cheddi Jagan International Airport the way it was being envisaged and constructed when we came into government [in 2020].

“Because such an equipment, the triple seven 200 ER, would have not been able to operate out of CJIA because the boarding bridges would have not been able to accommodate that,” the Public Works Minister noted.

Mr. Edghill also disclosed that the British Airways aircraft has a cargo hold volume of 4,800 cubic feet for both passenger baggage and cargo which will immensely contribute to generating economic growth and facilitating international trade.

Guyana has seen a

significant increase in air traffic, Edghill, who also has responsibility over the aviation sector, said.

“As of July 2022, 354,961 passengers transited and operated through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport… compared to 183,063 for the corresponding period last year.

And that is an increase of 94 per cent,” he said.

“In 2022, they [CJIA] are already recording a per cent of traffic for the corresponding year. Arrivals reflected a 97 per cent increase while departures reflected a 91 per cent in-

crease,” the minister added.

Meanwhile, Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister, Oneidge Walrond, said the introduction of British Airways into Guyana’s carrier market will see a tremendous boost for the country’s travel and tourism industry.

“We foresee endless possibilities as Guyana’s tourism product is unique.

Birding, nature and adventure enthusiasts will find paradise in our untouched rainforests and savannahs, home to 820+ species of birds and exotic wildlife,” Minister Walrond rec-

ognised.

She also underscored that the country stands to benefit immensely from

imports and exports which would generate economic growth and build the on international trade.

“What’s even more important is the fact that the United Kingdom, one of our main source markets, has significant demand for experiences which align with Guyana’s tourism products and which will, without a doubt, result in an influx of travellers to Guyana through this new route,” she said.

Minister Walrond further noted that Guyana will be capitalising on the new route to advance regional integration, and to market new multi-destination packages.

Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Guyana, Jane Miller, who was also present during the announcement, said the arrival of British Airways into the Guyanese market reflects growing confidence globally in the country’s tourism industry.

The British Airways introduction into the Guyanese market is the culmination of an initiative which commenced with an engagement among President Irfaan Ali, Minister Walrond and British Airways officials in London, England earlier this year.

Elon Musk sells US$6.9B of Tesla shares as Twitter lawsuit looms

(BBC) - TESLA boss Elon Musk has sold another 7.92 million shares in the electric car maker, worth around US$6.88 billion (£5.7 billion).

The sales took place after the firm’s annual shareholder meeting last week, regulatory filings show.

Mr. Musk says he needs the money in case he is forced to buy Twitter for US$44 billion.

The multi-billionaire is currently embroiled in a legal

battle with the social media platform after saying last month he would pull out of a deal to buy it.

The latest transactions were carried out on August 5, 8, 9, according to six filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

After news of the share sale was made public, Mr. Musk responded to a tweet asking whether he had finished selling Tesla shares with “yes”, adding that he needed the money in case he

was forced to buy Twitter and was unable to secure some of the funding for the deal.

“It is important to avoid an emergency sale of Tesla stock,” he said.

Asked by another user whether he would buy Tesla shares again if the Twitter takeover does not take place, Mr Musk also responded “yes”.

In July, Mr Musk said he planned to walk away from his bid to buy Twitter, prompting the company to sue him.

The world’s richest person has accused the company of withholding information about fake accounts.

Last month, a US judge ruled that Twitter’s lawsuit against Mr. Musk should go to trial in October.

Twitter hopes that the court will order Mr. Musk to complete the takeover at the agreed price of $54.20 per share.

Mr. Musk has countersued Twitter, although the details of that lawsuit have not been made public.

Also, in July, Twitter said that between April and June, it had spent US$33 million on the proposed deal.

It also said its number of monthly daily users had risen to 237 million - but it reported a net loss of US$270 million, which was worse than expected.

Meanwhile, Tesla revealed last month that it had offloaded 75 per cent of its Bitcoin, which was worth about US$2 billion at the end of 2021.

The company made waves last year when it revealed a major investment in the world’s biggest cryptocurrency.

Tesla said it bought traditional currencies with the US$936 million proceeds of its Bitcoin sales.

Lisa Hanna walking away from representational politics

(Jamaica Observer) NEWS on Tuesday that Lisa Hanna has decided to end her 15-year involvement in representational politics left many Jamaicans wide-eyed and O-mouthed and sparked speculation that the St Ann South Eastern Member of Parliament has basically had enough of the personal attacks to which she has been subjected from within the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) for some time.

In fact, Hanna, in her letter to PNP President Mark Golding stating her intention to not offer herself as a candidate for the party at the next general election, told the PNP that it needed to embrace change, empower young people and attract the right talent in order to survive.

“The PNP has always believed in equal opportunity for all regardless of station in life. This fundamental philosophy has driven our actions to propel solutions for national prosperity through building the economic base of Jamaica from the bottom up,” Hanna stated in her letter, which was made public by Golding.

“We have always been the party with a heart, the people’s party that is in touch with the grass roots and committed to ensuring no Jamaican is left behind.

“However, for any organisation to survive and be relevant to successive global environments and markets, it must be responsive and change with the times, seeking modern approaches to getting things done.

“This does not mean

changing our core principles, mission, or value proposition but, rather, embracing modern communication, applying our principles to 21st-century challenges, empowering the next generation, and, most importantly, attracting and retaining the right talents to get the job done,” she said in an apparent admonition of Golding’s presidency.

Hanna said she had no doubt that “once the PNP can recalibrate its approaches to reignite and reinforce these core tenets within the minds and hearts of Jamaicans to inspire their imagination and aspire towards a better future”, the party will form the next Government.

“I have always been a champion of change and having the courage to do what’s right even when it’s not expedient or self-serving, as I believe courage has an obligation to pave new roads for the generation coming behind us.

“As such, I have recently decided to conclude my current journey in representational politics at the end of this term,” added Hanna, the PNP’s spokeswoman on foreign affairs and foreign trade.

“Therefore, I will not be offering myself as the party’s candidate in the next general election when it is called, a decision I have communicated to my constituency executive.

“I trust this early notice will give constituency delegates adequate time to go through a selection process to select a candidate of their choice, which is their constitutional right.

“I remain available to serve at your consideration in the shadow cabinet as

spokesperson on foreign affairs and foreign trade,” she added.

Hanna, who, in November 2020, lost the party’s presidential election to Golding by 296 votes, traced her history in the PNP, which started in 2007 when she was parachuted into St Ann South Eastern by then party president Portia Simpson Miller to contest the general election that year.

That development, she said, changed her life “immensely” as it allowed her to serve Jamaica in another capacity.

“Over the last 15 years, I have found this experience quite satisfying; it allowed me the privilege to serve as an elected Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister, on the national scene, and at the party level as regional chairman and treasurer.

“This opportunity will always be a part of me as it reshaped the foundations of my thinking and will for-

ever guide my perspective,” she said.

After winning the St Ann South Eastern seat in the 2007 election, Hanna enjoyed popular support in the constituency, retaining it at each parliamentary poll.

However, over time her relationship with some Comrades in and outside the constituency turned frosty and, in the September 2020 General Election she scraped home by a mere 32 votes.

In her letter to Golding, Hanna said her tenure in representational politics “has not always been easy” and the political baptisms of fire to which she was subjected “were often unrelenting and excruciating”.

“I have many times stood alone on principle, which was perceived as unreasonable and misunderstood.

“But on the whole, the collective experience has bolstered my character, sharpened my fighting

skills, and prepared me well for the next chapter of my life’s journey,” Hanna said.

She told Golding that she “will always remain grateful to the PNP”, and wished for him the very best as he leads the party “towards victory at the polls and the formation of the next Government”.

Late Tuesday night, the PNP issued a statement thanking Hanna for her years of service to the party and the people of St Ann South Eastern.

The party said Golding expressed appreciation to Hanna for her willingness to continue serving as the spokeswoman on foreign affairs and foreign trade, and for her continued commitment to the party and Jamaica. “ C o m r a d e H a n n a ’s commitment to Jamaica remains an inspiration to our youth and those looking

to enter representational politics.

“I look forward to continue working with Comrade Hanna on areas in which she is passionate and has achieved significant results,” the statement quoted Golding.

The party said it will work closely with the St Ann South Eastern constituency executive to arrange a suitable occasion to honour Hanna “and show our appreciation for the tremendous work she has done”. “ R e p re s e n t a t i o n a l politics is a labour of love and Comrade Hanna has certainly given her best in service to her country. The entire Jamaica should join us in thanking her for her service and wishing her the very best as she charts her way forward,” the PNP said.

Culture matters

ONLY recently, several activities were held to commemorate the contributions of our African foreparents to the economic and cultural development of Guyana.

An activity, hosted by President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, was held at State House which saw the attendance of scores of individuals from all walks of life, especially representatives from the Afro-Guyanese segment of the population.

There is no question that we are as a society richer for our cultural diversity. In his book ‘Culture Matters’, Sameul P Huttington made the point that it is cultural values that shaped human progress and it is culture that deter-

mines the success of a society.

According to sociologists, there is no such thing as a ‘backward’ culture. All cultures are relevant to the growth and development of the society in which they exist in terms of political, economic, technological and cultural development. Such is the extent to which culture is regarded, that social scientists are turning to cultural factors to explain concepts such as modernisation, political democratisation and inter-ethnic behaviour, among others.

It is in the above context that President Ali, during a visit to the Buxton community, emphasised the importance of history and culture in shaping an understanding that we are

all part of one family, the family of humanity.

“I know how important it is for you and those young people. I know how important history is. I know how important culture is. I know how important history is and history and culture should shape us to an understanding that we are part of a singular whole and that is the whole of humanity. Every culture, every system, every history points us to that singular whole that we are part of one family, the family of humanity.”

It is significant that the President made those remarks during a commemoration ceremony in Buxton in observance of the fourth anniversary of the Buxton-Friendship Museum,

Archives and Cultural Centre.

Buxton has a rich cultural heritage and is among the first villages to be established following the emancipation of slavery. It is also home to several prominent Guyanese.

Regrettably, there are a few who, mainly out of political opportunism, has been attempting to project Buxton as a ‘neglected’ community but good sense among the villagers has prevailed and these attempts have failed. And while there are some opposition elements who still seek to play on the ethnic sentiments of Buxtonians out of narrow partisan interests, the vast majority of the villagers peacefully go about their business in harmony and with a genuine

sense of cordiality with other members of the community, regardless of political affiliation or ethnicity.

The fact is that Buxton, like all communities in Guyana, have benefitted from the PPP/Cs developmental programmes and policies. Much of that progress is attributable to the interventions by the PPP/C administration in terms of infrastructural works such as the upgrading of streets and the placement of street lights, rehabilitation of cultural facilities and agricultural development. More remains to be done, but President Ali has given assurance that he is going to ‘lead a battle that includes Buxton for the upliftment of every single person,

and let me be clear, every single one of you, every single Guyanese is welcome onboard’.

These are indeed re-assuring words from a President who truly cares for the well-being of every single Guyanese regardless of political affiliation or ethnicity.

His ‘One-Guyana’ vision has provided a framework for a prosperous and cohesive society, one in which no one will be left behind.

President Ali must be commended for the proactive role he is playing in bringing the people of Guyana together. His call for national unity has resonated well with Guyanese all across the political and ethnic spectrum.

Exxon calls out Dr Adams’ ‘blatant mistruths’

WITH Dr Vincent Adams holding out that ExxonMobil had agreed to ‘unlimited liability coverage comprising of insurance plus parent company guarantee’ when he was Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the oil giant has called on him to produce the evidence.

In contending that no such agreement exists, the company said it maintains full insurance coverage that meets international industry standards for all of its petroleum activities in Guyana and reiterated that its first priority is to prevent adverse events by utilising the best technologies, processes and people.

“In the unlikely situation that an event occurs, we have established response personnel, procedures, and equipment aligned with the principles of the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC), the Caribbean Island Oil Pollution Preparedness Response and Co-operation, and the National Oil Spill Response Plan of Guyana.

ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS In fact, she said additional restrictions and fees on flaring were introduced such that flaring above background levels are only permitted under very narrow and clearly defined circumstances.

“The modified Liza Phase One permit includes specific timelines for detailed instances of flaring, and notification and approval processes, during which the company must justify its reasons for flaring. The EPA reserves the right to reject a request if it finds those reasons to be unjustified.

“Each of these insurance policies has been executed and has coverage of a total of US$600 million per occurrence of a spill event.

This per occurrence value covers third party liabilities, clean up and well control.

“None of the insurance policies provided has US$2.5 billion coverage for oil spill as is purported by the former EPA Head,” the release said The EPA also noted that it was presented with a draft parent company/affiliate guarantee and is engaging EEPGL on its proposed total guarantee of US$2billion from an affiliate company in the event EEPGL and its co-venturers default.

“As a Guyanese I find it incredibly disappointing that an individual who held a position such as Dr. Adams’ would be sharing such blatant mistruths. It

begs the question whether he genuinely does not understand the issues or is bent on deliberately misleading. I also say this because I understand, and appreciate, the culture at ExxonMobil Guyana and that of its leaders. A key reason our Guyanese employees, including myself, value working at the company, is the ethical, thoughtful, consistent, and socially responsible actions ExxonMobil Guyana takes. We can already see that these actions are enabling Guyana’s transformation and bringing sustainable prosperity for our people,” Persaud said in her letter.

Attack on Gandhi statue, hate in ‘Little Guyana’ draw strong condemnation

SEVERAL prominent American politicians and Hindu community leaders came out on midday Tuesday in sweltering heat to express their outrage and condemnation of the vandalisation and desecration of the Mahatma Gandhi statue that was in front of the Tulsi Mandir in Little Guyana, Richmond Hill.

The statue has been there for several years. The mandir is patronised by Guyanese and Trinidadians.

Gandhi’s statue was destroyed last Thursday by three individuals that CCTV camera footage revealed were of Hispanic origin. The area where the Mandir is located is largely occupied by Indo-Guyanese.

Tuesday’s rally in front of the Mandir was organised by elected New York State Assemblywoman, Jennifer Rajkumar.

She is the first Hindu American of New York to be elected in any legislative office. She represents the area where the Mandir is located. She stated that she invited other politicians and community leaders and the media to condemn hate and discrimination.

“We gather to condemn last week’s hate crime,” she said, noting that God takes many forms as is expressed in Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Sikhism, among others, and as such, “people should not attack but respect other person’s religious belief or faith.”

Rajkumar noted that Gand-

hi stood for non-violence and social justice.

“Love, peace, harmony, and tolerance constituted Gandhi’s dream. All ethnic groups live together here,” she said, adding: “Gandhi sacrificed material life for service and his actions motivated me to take up public service.

His principles were rooted in Hinduism – non-violence and soul force. He obtained India’s independence without shooting a bullet. Martin Luther King was influenced by Gandhi; Dr. King used Gandhian principles to fight American segregation.”

She continued: “The spate of hate attack against Hindu Americans is shocking. Hate crimes against Hindus have gone up by 125 per cent. Hindus are easily targeted. It is unAmerican. Our country was founded by immigrants. Italians and Irish suffered similar attacks when they first came.”

UNACCEPTABLE The Assemblywoman said that it is unacceptable to engage in hate.

“America is a land of endless possibility,” said Rajkumar, noting that her parents came to the US with just $300 and a suitcase and they have become a success story.

“Everyone wants to be part of the American dream. I am an embodiment of that dream.

I am the first south Asian to be elected from NYS.” Rajkumar is an Ivy League trained lawyer at the near top of her class who was highly sought after by law firms and politicians for their offices.

Jennifer explained that

she got a bill passed in the NYS legislature against hate crime and which authorises the setting up of a commission to investigate cases of hate.

She said she spoke with officers in charge of the 106 police precinct that is responsible for the location of the Mandir to investigate the attack as a hate crime. Queens District Attorney, Melinda Katz, is investigating the vandalism as a hate crime. Rajkumar concluded her speech by saying, “God bless America.”

The follow up speakers continued the theme of Rajkumar in condemning hate crimes. Community leader and organiser, Romeo Hitlall condemned the act. “I denounce hate crime. As Hindus, we live and embrace each other.”

The spiritual leader of Tulsi Mandir, Pandit Lakhram Maraj of Berbice explained what the CCTV showed.

“Three Hispanic individuals slapped Gandhi statue, pushed it down. They also knocked down tulsi plants which embodies Goddess Lakshmi. Tulsi is sacred to Hindus.” Pandit Lakhram appealed to the public for unity.

“Let us unite; united we stand,” he said and thanked Rajkumar and Hitlall for their support and co-operation and for taking up this issue.

Pandit Maraj said that some six years ago, jhandi flags were set on fire. He said the police promised an investigation but there was no follow up action. He thanked the politicians and the gathering for their support.

Pandit Ram Hardowar, spiritual leader of Shri Surya Mandir (172nd St) and President of the United Federation of Mandirs, joined the chorus in condemning the attack on Gandhi’s statue.

SERIOUS CRIME He recalled that the Gandhi Peace March last year culminated at Tulsi Mandir. He said that the attack on Gandhi’s statue “is an eye-opening moment”.

“We must recognise it as a

serious crime. I urge that this attack be taken up at federal level as well. We are angry, disturbed and taken aback by this attack.” He noted that Gandhi’s life and teachings were not confined just to India.

His message and life’s teaching spread worldwide.

“Nelson Mandela was inspired by Gandhi as was Dr ML King. We must educate the masses about what Gandhi symbolises and hopefully this kind of attack will end. Gandhi stood for love and unity.”

Congressman Gregory Meeks told the gathering that he wished “we are here to celebrate what Gandhi stands for.”

“I wish if I were here to talk about how we are a better borough, city, state, country because of Gandhi and the celebration of his life. Instead, we are here to condemn a hateful act against a great man.

Gandhi’s as well as Dr King and Nelson Mandela’s message was about love, not hate. We must stand in one voice against hate. We must let the haters know that we will not allow them or anyone to succeed in their acts of hate. This is a message for the vandals. Three people will not destroy unity.

We must know the contribution of Gandhi. We must bring people together. We will demonstrate that Southeast Queens, Richmond Hill stands united against hate and prejudice.

Hate will not be allowed to stand. We will change mindset of those who pursue hate. Hate can’t stop us. You will hear my voice speaking out against hate. We will work together to combat hate.”

Assemblyman David Weprin also condemned the violent act against Gandhi’s statue.

He said the diversity of our city and state recognises all religions and faiths.

“We acknowledge, cherish, and celebrate our diversity,” he said and noted that the NY delegation is working hard for recognition of Diwali.

“We must look out for each other. Hate is an attack against all of us. We will do our best for people to worship freely. I denounce this hate attack,” he said and quoted Gandhi, who said “Nothing enduring can be built from violence”.

State Senator Joseph Addabbo told the gathering that hate is unacceptable.

“New Yorkers are about love and respect. Disrespect and hate crime must not be accepted.

We must do something to combat hate crimes. We must love and respect others.

Law enforcement must have a greater role against hate.

Justice must be served in this attack on Gandhi’s statue,” he said.

THE Natural Resources Ministry has undertaken to mentor a cohort of apprentices as part of its Youth in Natural Resources (YNR) apprenticeship programme.

Speaking with the enthusiastic bunch of Guyanese youth, President, Dr Irfaan Ali said that by 2030, those young people will be living in the best city in the world, while underscoring their important role in the transformation process.

The engagement was held at State House, Main Street on Tuesday evening, a statement from the President’s office said. When Silica City is completed, he plugged, it will bridge modern facilities with a sustainable approach to living.

“Young Guyanese would grow up now in what will be a new city, Silica city; a smart city, a city that will encompass all the modern features, all environmental

features, sustainability features, freshwater.

“It is a city that would be connected to the old city, but it’s going to be a very young city. Maybe from how it looks, the average age in that city might be about 37 years. So, it will be the next kind of generation…” Dr Ali is quoted as saying.

This new city, the Head of State continued, is one component of the country’s transformation which will also include the establishment of an innovation hub as well as massive development in the agriculture sector.

All of these initiatives, the President emphasised, are integrally tied to youth involvement.

“So those are two things that we’re doing. But then also, we have launched a very special programme with young people to address food security; the shade house programme.

“You are growing up

in an era in which Guyana will move from importing fresh flowers to producing all our local fresh flowers.

An era when Guyana will be moving from importing strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, to an era where we will produce all of that right here,” Dr Ali added.

“So, the third plan for the development is that we are now working on a massive project that will see the first hydroponics hub in the Caribbean/Latin America here in Guyana… these are the things that will move our country in a new direction,” President Ali added.

The Guyanese leader underscored that while the oil and gas sector unlocks resources, Guyana’s development is not solely hinged on those funds.

The resources from that sector, he reiterated, will be managed responsibly to build out the economy in a

sustainable manner.

“We are working now to ensure that management of this resource, the use of this resource, the deployment of this resource is done in such a way that the future of Guyana and the present; because we cannot save everything for the future and the present is not fixed.

“So, we have to fix the present while we build a strong foundation for the future. And at the same time, hold reserves for the future.

So, this is a trajectory that we are embarking on,” His Excellency noted.

BUILDING A ‘ONE GUYANA’ He told the teenagers and young adults that their generation will have the responsibility of building, shaping and inheriting a country that is forged in unity, strength and purpose—a country that is ‘One Guyana’.

“I mean this is ‘One

Guyana’, let me be very clear on this; I’m counting on you guys - this generation - to build the ‘One Guyana’, to inherit the ‘One Guyana’, and be champions for the ‘One Guyana’.

“You are going to be the ones to do this, you don’t have a choice—you have to do this together,” Dr Ali championed.

The YNR Programme, President Ali pointed out, also affords the participants the opportunity to see and appreciate the beauty of their country.

“You all were given this opportunity… to see so many places… But seeing your country allows you to appreciate your country and to love your country… because the beauty of our country can change who we are inside, can change our own appreciation for what we have as a people: our heritage, our country, our land, our waterways; then we will

all do better in loving each other, caring for yourself and caring and protecting our country,” President Ali intimated.

This understanding and appreciation, he continued, is important in building who we are as Guyanese.

President Ali also assured the youngsters of his government’s continued support.

The Youths in Natural Resources Apprenticeship Programme was launched in July of 2022 with 50 participants between the ages of 16-21.

The young Guyanese were exposed to various sectors under the purview of the Ministry of Natural Resources, including mining, logging, and the petroleum sector.

By Shamar Meusa PRESIDENT, Dr. Irfaan Ali, on Wednesday, announced government’s intention to establish a land surveying institute and to make scholarships available to land surveyors to encourage a push for higher education among those professionals.

The Head of State made this announcement during the swearing-in ceremony of five young men who became the newest batch of land surveyors in the country.

The newly sworn in land surveyors are Elijah Persaud, Royston Washington, Tedwin Roache, Marc Nicholson, and Terron Roberts.

gested that the Ministry of Health will be working along with the relevant organisations to develop manuals to be used as part of the course for future candidates.

“Before we embark on the examination of students in the future, there are three things that I want to suggest that must be put in place from

The country must be in a position within the next three years, he said, to possess such a skill base to be able to offer these services to the Region.

In order to get to that stage, Dr. Ali noted that changes must be made to the current academic programme to strengthen same.

sioner of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, Enrique Monize, for his part, highlighted the need for land surveyors especially as the country is experiencing significant growth in many sectors.

Monize said there has been a tremendous increase in the number of development projects as he noted that land surveyors are usually the first persons on the land before projects are officially carried out.

Tele-medicine project to be piloted in Region Nine GUYANA CHRONICLE Thursday, August 11, 2022

IN an effort to build a world-class healthcare system, the Ministry of Health is currently exploring tele-medicine, exploring its pilot soon.

This was disclosed by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, during his address at the opening ceremony of the 42nd Annual Caribbean Association of Pharmacists (CAP) Conference. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Guyana Pharmacists’ Association.

Minister Anthony said that it will be piloted at four sites in Region Nine

(Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), and will be evaluated at the end of the year.

Depending on the progress, he noted, a wider project will then be rolled out.

With this, health care workers in far-flung region would be able to communicate with doctors in Georgetown to make a diagnosis.

Turning attention to procurement of medicine and vaccines across the region, Minister Anthony told the conference attendees that if each country

purchases medicine on its own, the prices will be exorbitant.

By noting this, the Dr Anthony said the Caribbean region should pool its resources which would mean a reduced cost for necessary treatments.

He said that if discussions were to take place among the countries concerning this, the leaders of those countries would be able to strengthen the systems that need work.

He related that building the capacity to manufacture vaccines is important, and in terms of

He noted that in some countries, pharmacists can give injections but in Guyana, this is not allowed and it is something that would have to be looked at.

Meanwhile, the President of GPA/CAP, Kalwattie Datt-Singh related that the conference was held in Guyana because of the high cost of travelling that some pharmacists would have to face to attend the conference.

She said that this was also a chance for local pharmacists to be exposed

to international dialogue and new trends.

“This conference is a perfect blend of both education, networking and also building bridges,” she said, adding that the hybrid format of online and in-person attendance saw more than 200 delegates from across 20 different countries attending.

She related that especially with the advent of COVID-19, the practice of pharmacy has changed.

“Pharmacies across the Caribbean region have experienced both strain and stimulations to present unforeseen challenges, and demand innovation.

“Whatever challenges we face, we responded accordingly and were transformed from traditional medication experts to playing a more critical role in the healthcare system.

“This unprecedented transformation presented a silver lining, where opportunities now exist for us as pharmacists to maximize our potential and values,” she said.

She noted that the role of pharmacists can now be summarized into three categories as primary caregivers, specialty care, and now digital.

CJIA aligning expansion with country’s development

WITH the completion of a number of expansion works at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) by China Harbour and Engineering Corporation (CHEC), the Government of Guyana, under the Ministry of Public works, is now overseeing a defects, liability and retention period.

This is according to Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, who, during a press conference on Wednesday, said CHEC

had undertaken the task to construct a super structure, build a curtain wall, and construct two boarding corridors to accommodate type D and E aircraft and all these works have been completed.

“That project is completed. China Harbour signed an addendum with the Government of Guyana when we came into office to do other things, apart from what was agreed to by the amended contract signed by the APNU+AFC [A Partnership for Na-

tional Unity+Alliance for Change] and one of which was to put in facilities to accommodate two additional air bridges that will accommodate code E and code D aircraft,” Edghill said.

He added: “The China Harbour Project with CJIA has, of the 30th of June 2022, been substantially completed and we are only in any defects or liability or retention period.”

Meanwhile, the Public Works Minister disclosed that there were additional

works that were being undertaken at the airport by the Government.

“We have just opened bids for a new admin building that will be across the road from the airport. What we are seeking to do is move all the administrative offices from the airport into a new building so those spaces could be used for other commercial activities.”

Those works, he said, will see the airport being expanded to create greater capacity for transit passengers.

“During the in-transit period to get connecting flight they [passengers] must be able to get a good restaurant, a nice hot meal, they must be able to get facilities, their children must get a play area. So,

we are putting in all those other amenities.”

He added that a new building will also be erected to accommodate airline offices.

“We are putting in a new building to accommodate offices for the airlines and bonds for concessions for with more airlines you have to have office space for the airlines to operate and you also have to put in facilities for the concession.”

Those works, he said, are expected to be completed within the next 18 months.

As Guyana’s oil and gas and tourism sectors continue to grow, work geared at expansion of the CJIA can be expected.

Marine ‘cage culture’ trial to begin in October

GUYANA will soon be one step closer to boosting its aquaculture sector with the commencement of its ‘Cage Culture’ initiative expected to start in October of this year.

This was disclosed by Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, who said that the first set of marine cages should be arriving in Guyana before the end of September.

“We purchased four marine cages from a company in Brazil to commence the trial of our marine cage initiative. Once those cages arrive, we will begin almost immediately with the trial. It will take about six or seven weeks to assess the prog-

ress made with the trial but given the research done on the project and the training that our officers received from the Chinese Government, I am very optimistic that this trial will be very successful and that we will be able to move forward and have more persons come on board,” Minister Mustapha said.

Minister Mustapha further stated that two areas in Region Two had been earmarked with three species of fish being identified for the trial.

“So, we’ve identified two areas in Region Two to do the trials -- Capoey and Lake Mainstay. We’ve also identified Tambaqui, Mullet, and Tilapia for the

initial phase of the project given the demand for these species and the high prices they attract. As I mentioned before, our officers received some amount of virtual training back in June that was organised by the Chinese Embassy and we are looking to have another round of training sometime next year. When the cages arrive and are installed, we’ll have some physical training done by the supplier and then go straight into the trials,” the minister explained.

Upon assuming office, the Government had announced that it was exploring the possibility of introducing cage culture given the impact climate

change is having on the global fisheries sector.

President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, had said his Government was moving ahead with the rollout of a number of innovative solutions to ensure the livelihood of fisherfolk is maintained.

Local fishermen were also suffering from low catches which further prompted the Government to conceptualise innovative ways of expanding the sector.

“We are not sitting back. We have a responsibility to find solutions and that is what we are doing. We are working every single day on finding innovative solutions,” the

Head of State emphasised.

President Ali had said that a marine cage project would soon be established, which will guarantee fisherfolk close to $8 million annually.

Communities within the hinterland district will also benefit from the major intervention.

“Then in hinterland community, we are looking at [installing] marine cages in the rivers where the water is flowing so that we can grow tilapia there in a more natural environment.”

The initiative, President Ali noted, will assist with the reduction of operation costs. He said profits gained will meaningfully

Guyana earns GY$60 billion in profit oil, royalties for July

GUYANA CHRONICLE, Thursday August 11, 2022

(OilNOW) - The latest monthly report on Guyana’s Natural Resource Fund (NRF) shows that the account earned GY$10.646 billion in royalties and GY$50.127 billion in profit oil.

This totals approximately GY$60.773 billion (US$291.477 million).

The Bank of Guyana report states that net outflows for the month totalled $41.7 billion.

This was the second withdrawal ever made by the government from the Fund, to support the 2022 budget.

The withdrawal was approved earlier this year by t h e N a t i o n a l A s s e m b l y.

This left the balance of the fund at GY$176.3 billion (US$845.608 million).

During the second quarter ended June 30, 2022, the account had recorded a profit of GY$266.04 million (US$1.28 million) solely due to interest earned on deposits.

Inflows to the Fund at that time as well had amounted to

GY$48.4 billion (US$232.16 million) comprising profit oil – GY$44.01 billion (US$211.11 million) and royalties – GY$4.39 billion (US$21.06 million).

The Natural Resource Fund was formed by the enactment of the Natural Resource Fund Act 2019, which was passed in the National Assembly on January 3, 2019 and assented to by the President on January 23, 2019.

This Act was subsequently replaced with the Natural Resource Fund Act 2021 which was passed in the National Assembly on December 29, 2021 and assented to by the President on December 30, 2021.

The Act gives the Bank of Guyana the responsibility for the operational management of the Fund.

To date, there has been no investment mandate for the Fund and all petroleum revenues are held as cash deposits in the account.

Currently, he revealed that there are 75 surveyors currently listed at the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, of which he estimated approximately 40 are truly active.

Monize noted that this is so because of the lack of

study options in the field which led many persons to move on to other professions.

As such, the possibility of scholarship opportunities for future land surveyors will be a timely initiative for those within the field.

It was noted that the Government Technical Institute (GTI) is the official institution in the country that has

a specific land surveying programme.

After the ceremony, a donation of equipment was made to the institute. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations handed over equipment to bolster the institute’s Land Surveyors programme to the tune of US$30,000.

France whale: Beluga put down during dramatic rescue mission

A BELUGA whale that became stranded in France’s Seine River had to be put down, ending a dramatic rescue mission that captivated world audiences.

Officials say vets took the decision as the four-metre (13ft) mammal was being moved in a refrigerated truck.

Overnight, rescuers spent nearly six hours lifting the 800kg (1,763lb) whale from the river using a crane and nets.

They had planned to release the animal in the sea but its health deteriorated after failing to eat.

“It is with heavy hearts we announce that the beluga did not survive,” Sea Shepherd France conservation group wrote in a Twit-

ter post on Wednesday.

“We are devastated by this tragic outcome that we knew was very likely,” it added.

Meanwhile, Florence Ollivet-Courtois, a vet for the local emergency services, was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying that “the animal was not getting enough air and [was] suffering visibly.”

“We therefore decided that it made no sense to set it free and proceeded to euthanasia,” the vet added.

Experts are still puzzled as to how the whale - who had been trapped more than 100km (62 miles) inland - managed to stray so far south, away from its natural habitat.

On Wednesday, crowds were seen gathering on the

banks of the river in the northern town of SaintPierre-La-Garenne to watch the rescue.

But interest in the whale’s survival spread far beyond France, and conservation groups and a number of individuals have made financial donations to help the rescue operation.

Belugas occasionally venture south in the autumn to feed as ice forms, but it is rare for them to travel so far from their native home.

According to France’s Pelagis Observatory, which specialises in sea mammals, the nearest beluga population is off the Svalbard archipelago, north of Norway, 3,000km (1,870 miles) from the Seine.

“You have to apply, you have to bid; for example, we

are building the four-lane road from Ogle to Eccles, and we

went out publicly, we advertised, and we now have a consultancy -- an Indian firm; this is just one of the consultancies.

We had the airport expansion project, there is a consultancy that is overseeing that; we are building a new Demerara Harbour Bridge, we have a Supervisory Consultancy supervising that; and the Linden to Mabura Road, Consultant Mott MacDonald is our supervisor consultant, they won the international tender. So, every major project, apart from the fact that we have our team here, we go out for a supervisor consultancy, independent of the government,” he said.

Minister Edghill noted that this is the normal practice, one which is aimed at ensuring value for money and for the purpose of transparency and accountability.

He also told the visiting team of GOINVEST (Guyana Office for Investment), which “serves as primary contact for investors and liaises with government agencies throughout an investment process”.

GOINVEST, among other things, provides information on incentives available to investors and regulations relevant to the sectors of their interest.

There have been reports that some speedboat operators plying the Vreed-enHoop to Georgetown route

have opted to increase their fares from $100 to $120.

Some minibus operators, notably for Route 40 minibuses, have also attached a $20 additional charge.

Additionally, some taxi drivers have added $100 to their fare. These unauthorised increases have all caught the attention of the authorities, who have since advised citizens against paying increases in these prevailing circumstances.

Hike in boats, buses, taxis fare will not be tolerated WITH some operators of speedboats, minibuses and taxis opting to increase their fares, forcing commuters to pay more money on established fares, Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, stated that government has not, at this point, authorised any fare increases.

Speaking during a media conference at the ministry’s Wight’s Lane office, Minister Edghill said: “we have made it very clear we are not authorising any increase of fares.”

He added that the government has implemented measures to reduce the impact of the rising cost of living on households, which stems from a number of global factors.

“If the government is sub-

sidising the consumer and the operator, how could the operator go to the consumer and say ‘pay me more’?

“So, whether its minibuses, taxis, [or] speedboats, we have said ‘no’” the Minister said.

“You can only get more if the people want to pay more and we have advised the people that [they] have no right to pay more; not at this time. It is not the opportune time.

“We have to be sensitive, we have to be our brother’s keeper,” the Minister said, admonishing those transportation operators who have already engaged in the practice.

FOUNDER of Brandon’s Divine Classics (BDC), 20-year-old Brandon DeCambra, is shifting his business’s focus from retail in men and women-oriented products to something he could truly call his own.

The young entrepreneur has now ventured into manufacturing his first-ever line of BDC - Divinity Luxury watches.

BDC is a retail and soonto-be manufacturing business dedicated to bringing topof-the-line luxury products to Guyana. The first line of BDC watches was launched on Wednesday.

The Guyana Chronicle interviewed the ambitious youth.

At a young age, DeCambra dreamt of someday founding and owning his own business where he would manufacture his own line of luxury products. He strived to become a business leader with the ability to inspire creativity in the current generation.

The 20-year-old launched his business career in 2020 in the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, when online shopping was at its peak.

DeCambra managed to

battle through the hardships faced by the diminishing economy at the time, now becoming one of the youngest up-and-coming entrepreneurs of Guyana.

With a strong belief that the customer’s satisfaction comes first, he continues to bring consumers unique pieces of retail products such as watches, belts, sunglasses, rings, bracelets, necklaces, fashion accessories, brand name accessories in Movado, Nine West, Anne Klein, Versace, and soon will be introducing Gucci, Prado, Burberry and more to his lineup.

For the BDC Luxury watch, every lever and spring fulfils a mission of meeting the highest standard of security and precision.

The watches are made of Sapphire Mirror Stainless Steel, conveying a passion for cars with the cool personality of the sports car wheel hub, brake pads, and callipers, as the prototype dial.

Smith, Shepherd heroics fall short of New Zealand

(ESPNCRICNFO) - A solid innings of 47 by returning captain Kane Williamson and a dashing 33 from 15 balls by Jimmy Neesham propelled New Zealand to a 13-run win over the West Indies in the first of three T20Is in Jamaica.

Neesham struck three fours from the last three balls and 23 runs from the last over of the innings as New Zealand made 185 for 5 after being sent in to bat at Sabina Park. Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner took 3 for 19 as New Zealand restricted the West Indies to 172 for 7.

“There was a lot of spin which was a big surprise,” said Santner, who was voted player-of-the-match. “I think the lengths are key against these guys. They can hit you pretty far, so back of a length worked today and as a unit we were able to pick up wickets which was pretty key.”

New Zealand’s innings had two parts, separated by a lengthy rain-break. Openers Martin Guptill and Devon Conway gave the tourists a strong start, putting on 62 for the first wicket. But the pair fell to consecutive deliveries

from Odean Smith, who went on to take career-best T20I figures of 3 for 32.

Guptill fell to a brilliant one-handed catch by Shimron Hetmyer, who was backed up against the boundary at deep point, while Conway’s innings of 43 from 29 ended when he top-edged a catch to wicketkeeper Devon Thomas.

The rain came in the 12th over with New Zealand on 95 for 2 and Williamson at the crease with Glenn Phillips.

Players were off the field for almost two hours and when play resumed New Zealand immediately lost Phillips for 17.

The New Zealand innings briefly lost momentum but Williamson re-established the impetus of the innings by taking 33 runs from his next 18 deliveries. He finally was out to another brilliant catch on the boundary, this time from Hayden Walsh, who dashed from midwicket to pocket a comfortable catch at speed.

Neesham struck a six from the second ball of an over in which he also was dropped by Romario Shepherd from the bowling of Jason Holder. West Indies paid the price with Neesh-

am’s three fours from the last three balls.

“We want to get better as a group but in saying that I was happy with the performances,” West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran said. “Santner bowled very well and Ish (Sodhi) got away with a few. Scores above 175-180 are tricky for us. Unfortunately losing is contagious and we’re a losing side at the moment.”

Shamarh Brooks anchored the top of the West Indies innings with 42 at almost a run a ball. But there was a lack of consistent momentum afterward. Pooran with 15 from eight balls, Holder with 25 from 19 and Rovman Powell with 18 from 12 all threatened to take control of the game but couldn’t carry on.

Finally, Shepherd and Odean Smith shared a 50-partnership from 23 balls for the eighth wicket to fan West Indies’ hopes.

Shepherd struck an unbeaten 31 from 16 balls and Smith 27 from 12. But West Indies came to the last over needing 26 runs and the task proved too much.

BCB receives cricket uniforms; GMR&SC balls for secondary schools launches from Lochan Samkarran International

THE Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) under the leadership of its president, Hilbert Foster, last Tuesday received a massive donation of cricket balls and cricket uniforms for secondary schools as part of its soon-to-be-launched schools programme.

The items were donated by overseas-based Berbician Lochan Samkarran after a discussion with Foster.

Foster stated that Samkarran, who is a very successful businessman in the United States of America, was very pleased with the current development of Berbice cricket and wanted to play a major role.

After the duo had an intense discussion, it was decided that assistance would be provided to all 23 schools in Regions Five and Six. Each school would collect 15 pairs of white school uniforms and two boxes of cricket balls.

Among the schools to benefit are Tagore Secondary, Line Path Secondary, Central Corentyne Secondary, Lower Corentyne Secondary, J.C Chandisingh, Canje Secondary, New

Amsterdam Secondary, Berbice High, Rosignol Secondary and Bush Lot Secondary.

Foster, stated that the gear and uniform distribution forms part of a comprehensive programme for

all schools with a countywide coaching programme to be launched soon.

The BCB would also be unveiling another coaching project for over 100 primary schools in the county within the next two months while plans are been finalised for the hosting of a year-long Kiddies Cricket Academy for 100 kids between ages eight and eleven years.

The Kiddies Academy would hold weekly training and coaching for the most promising kids over a twelve-month period.

The BCB is also working to get sponsorship for the temporary employment of a minimum of 20 part-time coaches across the four sub-associations to work with the kids and primary school students.

Foster expressed confidence that a deal would be cemented in the next few weeks for the coaches to start working in what he views as the most ambitious cricket development programme in Guyana.

CPL names Torginol as official paint

THE Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has confirmed Torginol Paints as the tournament’s Official Paint for the next three years.

Torginol Paints will be working with Hero CPL to bring colour to the Biggest Party in Sport, with the company supporting the tournament with pitch markings across the region. Torginol will also bring colour to the fans with face-painting for supporters at the group

games and finals in Guyana.

Torginol Paints is based in Guyana and has cemented its position as one of the premier paint manufacturers across the region.

Drag race

THE Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) has launched its international Drag Racing championship, billed for August 21 at the South Dakota Circuit, Timehri.

The event, expected to be the marquee event for drag racing here, is expected to feature competitors from Trinidad & Tobago and Suriname.

According to GMR&SC president Mahendra Budhoo, the club has already confirmed two rail cars from along with a third competitor from Trinidad.

“We are still deciding whether it will be a two-day or one-day event and that is determinant on the amount of registrants we get. If we feel we cannot pull the event off in one day then we will have to do Saturday-Sunday. However, all knockouts will be on Sunday,” GMR&SC president Budhoo said.

Meanwhile the club had also confirmed late last evening several competitors from Suriname and were up to press time today trying to organise those names.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS A MUST Competitors have been warned against late registration, with the club’s vice-president, Mohamed S, Roshandin, saying ‘no late entries will be tolerated.”

As it stands, registration closes in seven days (August 17) with three cars up to press time registered.

Roshandin also made it clear that competitor registration forms will not be complete without a medical form; both of which can be found on the club’s website and social media page.

The event is billed for the South Dakota Drag Strip with admission being $2 000 for adults and $1 000 for children.

THE Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) has shortlisted a squad of 38 Under-21 men to begin preparations for the Pan American Junior Championships, scheduled for Barbados from April 10 to 18, 2023.

As part of their preparations a team of 18 players will be selected to travel to Barbados, to play a series of matches against Caribbean sides, December 7-12, 2022 The team will be prepared by a trio of experienced former national players-turned-coaches in John Abrahams, Marisha Rodrigues and Robert Fernandes.

According to head coach of

the national men’s programme, Robert Fernandes, several key members of the squad have been training with the senior national squad since February of this year in preparation for the CAC Games scheduled for June-July of 2023.

“We have been working with some of these players for the past six months in the senior national programme. However, I enjoy the challenge associated with preparing junior teams because it’s almost always a fresh set of players who have little to no international experience.

“This squad has tremendous depth to complement the

exceptional talents of players like Samuel Woodroffe, Shaquan Favorite and Shakeem Fausette. I believe we have the ingredients needed to prepare a quality team and I’m grateful to have John and Marisha on board to share their knowledge and expertise.”

Vurlon Mills, TSG to host football outreach camp

VURLON Mills Football Academy Inc. will be hosting its second inaugural outreach programme, targeting children from Albouystown, East Ruimveldt, and West Ruimveldt, between the ages of eight and 13.

The football academy will be collaborating with The Siskin Group Inc. (TSG) and the programme will focus on health, life skills, and football.

Coach Vurlon Mills, in an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, said that last year’s camp was a success and it targeted the same 70 children from Albouystown only.

“When we first did it, it was just one of my coaches and I who came up with the idea, ‘let’s target Albouystown’,” he said.

heard about their outreach programme and expressed interest in collaborating to hold the second outreach programme.

“They actually provided all the equipment and all the outreach programme uniforms and they are helping us in a big way financially as well,” Mills said.

The camp will be held at

the Guyana Football Club (GFC) ground.

He related that they chose those communities because they are underserved and not many children have the opportunity to be a part of clubs and they are hoping to take some children for free into the academy from their areas after the outreach.

Based on information collected from last year’s outreach, they realised that many of the children are not in clubs.

Children training with the academy have the opportunity to represent Georgetown, once they play well and Mills said that their intention is to train them to represent Guyana and more.

“Mainly, we try to give you the opportunity to make the national team so that you can have a college opportunity. Maybe somebody would see you and you’ll have a college opportunity,” Mills said.

Some sponsors of this programme are MVP Sports, American Youth Soccer Organisation (AYSO), Sunshine Snacks, GFC and Ansa McAl.

The Women’s team led by 14-year-old Women’s Champion Pooja Lam, defeated four teams - Laos, Central African Republic, Timor-Leste and Libya - while they drew with Oman to raise their International ranking 16 places up from No. 136 to No. 120 in the world.

The Open team, made up of four male players, including Candidate Master (CM) Taffin Khan and FIDE Master (FM) Anthony Drayton, were able to move from 152 to 148 with a total of four team wins against Seychelles, Gabon, Brunei Darussalam and Burundi.

Overall, the Open Team are now ranked fifth in the Caribbean.

The quartet of players lost the final round of the tournament against Haiti 2.5-1.5. Drayton won against Jude Guillaume while Khan drew with his Haitian counterpart FM Marckens Jean Louis.

IMPRESSIVE FEMALE PERFORMANCE In the biennial event, 12-year-old deaf player Anaya Lall was most impressive in the final round against Libya, defeating 1836 rated player WFM Khuloud El Flow.

with WFM Khadija Elfelo (1875), while Pooja Lam and Sasha Shariff also defeated their Libyan opponents, Alrais and Albudwi, respectively.

The team triumphantly placed third in the Group E category, with top players Callender and Shariff finishing on 5.5 points each from 10 games, while Lam and Lall collected three points each while Nellisha Johnson earned 1.5 points.

On the Open side, Drayton tallied the most points, 5.5 points from nine rounds. This was followed by Khan with 4.5 points from 11 games, Loris Nathoo and Ethan Lee both ended with three points and Roberto Neto with 2.5 points for Guyana.

Overall, both Open and Women’s teams finished on 18.5 points.

According to information from the Guyana Chess Federation, “It was an all-around successful tournament for the Guyana Chess Olympiad team, with increased rating points for players, improved rankings and two new Conditional WCMs in Shariff and Callender.”

The Olympiad team and their delegation were expected to arrive home today.
