Agriculture equally important as O&G sector –– says Dr Jagdeo, outlines major transformation for Region Three

By Tajeram Mohabir REGION Three is slated to undergo major transformation with the roll out of a series of large scale-infrastructural projects, Vice-President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, said during an outreach there on Friday.

Addressing hundreds of residents at separate meetings at the Canal # One Tarmac and Crane Village, West Coast Demerara, Dr Jagdeo reiterated that while the region will see a transformation in infrastructure, agriculture will not be neglected as it is equally important as the oil and gas sector.

He underscored that for agriculture to thrive, proper drainage and irrigation systems have to be in place to minimise flooding, and this is a major focus of the government.

A few months ago, the Vice-President met with farmers, engineers and regional officials from Regions Two, Three, Five and Six, at the Arthur Chung conference Centre to definitively tackle flood-

Since then, he said a number of contracts have been awarded, and in Region Three, contracts to the tune of $1.3B have been awarded for procurement of two heavy-duty pumps to improve drainage at A-Line and Canal # One. “At B-Line, we are now working to build a

bigger bridge across the road and open up the sluices there. At Patentia and other areas we are working to expand capability there too. This is crucial for us… once the projects get implemented and combined this will be in excess of $5B in infrastructural work, right here, in this end, to improve drainage,” the Vice-President said.

This is on drainage.

Significant attention has also been placed on roads and minimising traffic congestion and in this vein the Mandela to Eccles fourlane road was conceived and executed.

To further minimise the problem on the East Bank, a contract has been awarded to take the road to Diamond.

“So by next year, from Diamond into Georgetown, you will have a new four-lane alignment ready.

We have awarded a contract for US$106M from Ogle now to come back to about Eccles area, so you have 12 lanes going into Georgetown,” he told the gathering at Canal # One Tarmac.

SHOWPIECE The government has also conceptualised, did the feasibility study and raised the finances for the new four-lane Demerara Harbour Bridge.

That contract has already been awarded, and according to Dr Jagdeo, when the US$261M highrise bridge is completed, it will be a “showpiece”. “[It] will come across the Demerara into this region so people would not have to worry about this harbour bridge anymore.

That contract was awarded. We have just gone out to tender for the part from Crane. A four-lane road from Crane will come all the way to connect back the road so you can bypass the traffic in the Vreed-enHoop area. Before, maybe by the end of July, we will open the bids for that, so maybe two to three years’ time, that would be completed,” he said, noting that this project alone is around $12B. –– President Ali tells hemisphere’s leaders; urges solutions to shared challenges

By Shamar Meusa PRESIDENT, Dr Irfaan Ali, on Friday, advocated that it was time for leaders of North, South & Central America and the Caribbean to have fact-based discussions to uplift the people of the hemisphere to a position of prosperity.

The President made those remarks during his inaugural presentation at the Ninth Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., where he noted that leaders must be able to have frank discussions to resolve systemic issues, putting political and ideological differences aside.

The Guyanese Headof-State said he was convinced the hemisphere’s leadership was ready for those types of frank and fact-based conversations.

He added that while there was encouragement to set up committees examining issues of food security, climate change, energy security, and financing, such should be expanded to the whole of the Americas.

“Let us say to the people of this region, that as political leaders, we are ready to tie ourselves to the time-bound initiatives in delivering to them the prosperity we all speak of.

“We need, as a region, to have these tough conversations that are necessary to make the best possible decisions for the people of this region,” President Ali said.

He noted that when addressing the conference’s theme of “Building a sustainable, resilient and equitable future,” it was important to look at issues of democracy, good governance, fairness, and security among others.

In addition to that, the President noted that when addressing those issues, there must be a realistic analysis of the current state of affairs in the Americas.

Supporting his call with data, President Ali highlighted that, in 2019, some 7.4 per cent of the population in countries in the Americas were affected by hunger.

The President added that the situation had gotten worse over the last five years as there had been an increase in undernourishment by 13.2 million people.

As it related to climate change, Dr Ali told the Summit that changes in climatic patterns were expected to cost the region hundreds of billions of US dollars annually.

These changes, he mentioned, will continue to disrupt crop cycles and yields even as the number of extreme weather events in Central America has increased by 3 per cent annually in the last 20 years.

“The Amazon, the world’s largest reservoir of biodiversity and carbon, is described as highly vulnerable to drought.

Exposure to drought increased from 8 per cent between 2004 to 2005 to 16 per cent in 2015 to 2018,” President Ali said.

This, he iterated, had led to an increase in tree mortality and declining productivity in the forests in North America over the last few decades.

Further, the projection between 2021 and 2050 is that average temperatures are expected to rise to about 2.5 degrees Celsius in the United States.

Meanwhile, the President stated that the COVID-19 pandemic pushed some 4.7 million people out of the middle

The data showed that remote learning was challenging for those children who live in the most disadvantaged areas.

However, in order to solve these and other issues, the President said that it was only collective action that will ensure that the prosperity being sought is built on good governance, democracy, and the rule of law.

“We are living among these challenges in a region that has the potential to be fully energy secure, bring prosperity to every home, have the greatest access to natural resources, abundant land and access to water resources to ensure food security; enough rain forests, and technology to make a meaningful contribution to climate change, enough access to finances

to bridge inequality and support sustainable development for all,” President Ali said, questioning why the region has not been able to achieve this.

As a result, he noted that it points to systemic issues which require honest conversations as it relates to resolving these systemic problems.

“I was happy to be part of a meeting yesterday with President Biden and Vice President Harris, and we are convinced that the leadership is ready for this frank, fact-based conversation,” he said.

These tough conversations must be had and were necessary, he said, for leaders to be able to make the best possible decisions for the people of the region.

To this end, President Ali indicated that Guyana had been affected by all of the issues he mentioned. He especially highlighted Guyana’s experience of a threat to democratic institutions and values.

Even while facing challenges, the President said Guyana still remains among the best in the

world for managing its forests as the current deforestation rate is around 0.05 per cent.

As Guyana’s economy is projected to double in size within two years as the world’s fastest-growing, Dr Ali said the country was not alone.

He told those gathered at the Summit: “We belong to the family of humanity, and we are ready to make our contribution to that family of humanity. We cannot be reckless, and we will not be irresponsible in managing these resources in the interests of the world and in the interests of this region.”

With Guyana’s resources along with the potential of Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and even possibilities through investment in exploration with gas in Barbados, President Ali noted that the region can be made energy secure.

As such, he urged leaders to get together and have the conversation that defines a pathway to energy security

for the region, adding that not only does the potential exist, but all available tools and assets are available and can and should be used in order to reach the potential.

Meanwhile, he said, “This conference must also define a pathway for integration of infrastructure, people and economies. It is important that we have that conversation on how we’re going to integrate our people or economy and infrastructure.”

With that, he indicated that the people of the region expect that the conference will point to solutions and an action-oriented agenda to address all of the issues that will provide them with a better future.

“Let us take collective responsibility at this conference to fix the problem and fix the system in the interests of the people of this hemisphere. Let us forge ahead to unite the Americas, strengthen our relationship forged in respect and good governance,” the President said.

COVID: US to drop test requirement for air travellers

(BBC) - THE US will no longer require air travellers to have proof of a negative COVID-19 test before entering the country from abroad.

Officials said they were dropping the requirement due to the “tremendous progress” the country had made in the fight against the virus.

The travel industry has been pushing for an end to the policy, which they say has deterred bookings, as families fear getting stranded abroad.

The change comes into effect on Sunday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will re-evaluate the

policy in 90 days. The administration said it would “not hesitate to act” to reinstate the rule should new variants make officials believe it is necessary.

“We are able to take this step because of the tremendous progress we’ve made in our fight against the virus: We have made lifesaving vaccines and treatments widely available and these tools are working to prevent serious illness and death, and are effective against the prevalent variants circulating in the US and around the world,” a senior official told a group of reporters.

Companies in the travel sector, which has seen demand surge as concerns about the pandemic wane, have said the US has lagged behind other countries in re-evaluating testing policies.

The UK removed all COVID-19 test requirements for travel in March, as did Canada. Italy ended its testing requirements this month.

On Friday, Canada also said it would pause random COVID testing at airports for the rest of June in order to reduce wait times for travellers.

US Travel Association president, Roger Dow, said the change in policy would “accelerate the recovery of the US travel industry”, while the International Air Transport Association said it was “great news” the “ineffective” measure was being dropped.

Airline Virgin Atlantic also welcomed the move, saying it would “boost consumer confidence even further and support the rebound in trans-atlantic travel this summer”.

The US has been slowly easing COVID national restrictions. Last November, it lifted restrictions on travellers from more than 30 coun-

tries, including the UK, after a more than 18-month ban.

In April, the US dropped its requirement that passengers wear masks on planes after a court voided the CDC’s mandate.

According to research by the US Travel Association, eliminating the test requirement is likely to bring an additional 5.4 million visitors to the US this year, boosting travel spending by 12 per cent.

“Today marks another huge step forward for the recovery of inbound air travel and the return of international travel to the United States,” Mr Dow said.

Sputnik V no longer being administered, says Health Minister THE Ministry of Health has discontinued the use of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccines here.

This is according to the Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, who made the revelation on the side-line of an event some days ago.

When asked about vaccines and their shelf life, the Health Minister said his ministry is no longer administering the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccines.

As a result, he noted that what was left of the last set of the vaccines were used. The remaining quantity expired and could not be used.

(Reuters photo) “We’re no longer giving Sputnik. So, what we have, we have utilized and we had some that expired,” he said even as he added that he did not have the direct number of vaccines that had expired at the time.

As he spoke about the shelf life of the vaccines, Dr Anthony said that it would vary, depending on the vaccine.

He indicated that some of the vaccines that have been procured are expected to expire in October of this year while others would expire in December.

“We have three vaccines that we are using. We have Sinopharm -- that goes until 2023. We have a limited amount of Johnson & Johnson remaining… then the rest of the vaccines that we currently have is really Pfizer vaccines,” the Health Minister said.

The Russian-made vaccine, which was the first registered COVID-19 vaccine, was the backbone of Guyana’s COVID-19 inoculation campaign as the government was able to procure over 400,000 doses.

The vaccine used two different components for its first and second dose.

Despite being used in a number of countries since its registration, Sputnik V has not yet been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The project entails bringing the pipeline in, building the power plant and building a natural gas liquids facility. It will cost over US$1.5B. THOUSANDS OF JOBS “It will create thousands of jobs because once this comes in here, a whole range of other industries are going to move to the Wales Industrial Estate.

So the pipeline, we are bringing in 50 million cubic of gas to generate 250-300 megawatts of power,” he said, noting that this single plant which is expected to come onstream in by 2024 will cut the price of electricity by 50 per cent.

This will be a big boost to industries and a great benefit to ordinary consumers. Aside from power generation, the pipeline could be an off-shoot for a fertiliser and protein plant.

“In the first 50 million cubic, once we dry the gas, the liquid will be cooking gas. We will have to stop importing cooking gas because we will start exporting cooking gas. That means that the prices can come down significantly,” he said.

This year, some $2B has been allocated to the region for community roads and residents will benefit from a US$120M project for treated water on the coastland.

However, with the transformation set to take place, Dr Jagdeo urged the residents of the region not

to become complacent.

“Don’t fall into this populist view that we have a lot of money.

We will get there. If we work hard our people will become wealthy beyond imagination. The government will support that, our people will grow but you have to work towards this; it doesn’t happen overnight.”

A Shared Vision

GUYANA continues to share in the international spotlight.

The most recent manifestation of which was the participation of President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and other hemispheric leaders at the IX Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, United States.

Guyana and the Caribbean stand to benefit significantly from a number of initiatives emanating from the summit, especially in the area of climate change and clean and green energy. This assurance was given by US Vice-President Kamala Harris, who said that the United States will work with Caribbean countries to identify new, clean-energy projects. The US will also provide technical assistance to ensure that the projects are viable and appealing to investors.

According to Vice-President Harris: “We will bring them [investors] on road shows to showcase, and we will improve access to development financing which will make these projects a reality. We will engage with the private sector at every stage of this work because their involvement is es-

sential to making this productive and meaningful.”

These positions are fully congruent with that of the PPP/C administration which had, over two decades ago, embarked on a Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). It will be recalled that the LCDS was first initiated under the presidency of Dr Bharrat Jagdeo.

It has since been modified to take into account the new and changing dynamics of the economy, following the discovery of oil in commercial quantities.

According to President Ali, the revised LCDS 2030, which is currently in draft, sets out a vision for rising to the new challenges. The current and first draft is intended as the basis for a national consultation on how the country can re-double efforts to build a low-carbon economy and a new platform for a future economy.

As pointed out by President Ali, the LCDS 2030 continues to propel Guyana on a pathway started in 2008 when we were the first developing country in the world to put together and publish a Low Carbon Development Strate-

gy. The revised strategy is now in its discussion stage, in which the inputs from all stakeholders are being sought before a final draft is placed before the National Assembly.

Climate change remains an existential threat to the entire planet, but more particularly to low-lying island states which are much more vulnerable to rising sea levels. This observation was reinforced by the US Vice-President who noted that the Caribbean is on the frontline of the crisis.

This conversation comes at a critical moment as several countries in the region are in the process of transitioning their energy systems to more modern, clean and renewable energy. Guyana has already set in train a new energy mix which, in the coming period ahead, will see a combination of energy forms, including hydroelectricity, solar, gas, and wind.

These are not only renewable and clean but are much more competitive than fossil-based fuel, which has been financially burdensome, especially given the fluctuating prices of fuel on

the world market.

President Ali must be commended for the proactive role he is playing on the international stage to advance not only the interest of Guyana, but the interest of the Caribbean region and the Americas as a whole. Guyana’s international image has been greatly enhanced by the strong advocacy role of President Ali in a number of key and critical areas such as climate change; energy security; food security; preservation of democratic institutions and values; human rights; enhancing economic competitiveness, trade & investment among others.

The IX Summit of the Americas, held under the theme, ‘Building a Sustainable, Resilient and Equitable Future,’ is mutually beneficial for all countries in the hemisphere, especially at this time when the future of the region is under threat from climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic and food insecurity.

There is much more to be gained from a shared vision on the way forward.

Police, MoE sign partnership agreement … Hundreds of officers being trained at CPCE THE Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Education on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see the two organisations partnering to deliver specially designed training programmes for members of the force.

The main objective of the agreement stipulates that training will be developed and provided to members of the force, particularly those who are instructors within the GPF, which will be done at the level of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE).

The MoU was signed in the ministry’s boardroom at Brickdam, Georgetown,

Calvin Brutus, and Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Education Ministry, Alfred King.

Brutus in his remarks emphasized that the signing of the MoU forms one part of the force’s strategic plans, which includes partnerships with various stakeholders and organisations to further boost crime prevention and to develop the country as a whole.

“We are engaging all stakeholders in partnership to develop the force, renew its image and also assist in developing the country as a whole, focusing on community relations initiatives,” Brutus said.

Beyond the Jubilee …

Part 2: Pounding power of the poverty punch ‘bristles’ Britain back to basics!

By Earl Bousquet THE Queen’s Platinum Jubilee holiday is now over. Prime Minister Boris Johnson won the parliamentary No Confidence Motion called within hours after the majestic holiday ended.

Now, it’s back to basics as Britain ‘bristles’ under the pounding power of food prices.

Inflation is at a 40year high, fuel costs at the highest in 17 years (a full tank of petrol now costing drivers over 100 Pounds) – and the British currency is already sliding this year at 7 per cent below the US Dollar.

Like everyone everywhere else, Britons are also now increasingly finding it harder, by the day, to pay the always-rising costs of living. More families depend on food and soup kitchens today than this time last year. Additionally, more students depend on free school meals now than ever.

Johnson has sworn to steer Britain through the very inclement post-Brexit weather, now worsened by everything from climate change to COVID-19, supply chain paralysis, and the impending world food and economic crisis that started unfolding before the Ukraine war.

A political maverick all his life, the sitting prime minister carries the lapels of successfully beating the public opinion odds and becoming Lord Mayor of London (2008 to 2016), replacing then Prime Minister Theresa May as Leader of the Conservative Party in 2019.

He went on to lead the Tories just months later into its biggest election

victory since 1987 when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister.

But never mind PM Johnson’s ever-effervescent character. Britain is now set to register the lowest growth rate among the world’s richest nations.

With no end in sight for worsening conditions, his enemies from within have already decided Boris is a liability and may not be able to lead them to victory at the next general elections in 2024. So, he must go.

As more of the world’s richest countries start feeling the punch of the new poverty pinch, the UK will definitely need new and old friends to do business with in the new global dispensation.

London will first need to get right by its closerto-home Commonwealth partners and start addressing old and new problems that continue to distance it from them. This is particularly true for the Caribbean, Africa and India.

For example, last month’s move by Britain to invite the brightest students from universities worldwide, except from South Asia, Latin America and Africa, doesn’t spell well for London’s future ties with education ministers in the Commonwealth member-states affected.

UK-Caribbean trade is growing by leaps and bounds, but the region can no longer be seen and treated as only a traditional source of raw and refined products. It is also one where human resources exist at greater levels than ever, with growing pools for sharing with caring partners.

Agriculture has been central to the UK’s histor-

ical relationship with the Caribbean—its legacy is also badly in need of repair through sharing scientific and technological expertise and other reparatory resources that can enable its former colonies to overcome the wide gap created by and maintained between Slavery and Colonialism.

Food is now accepted (more than ever) as being more valuable than money. Ex-colonies, as new nations and republics, will keep those factors in mind in the new rounds of trade arrangements forced by the expanding economic inequalities and imbalances being caused by the collisions of current global crises.

The Caribbean’s calls for Reparations to repair the continuing historical damage caused through Slavery and Indentureship won’t just go away.

The Royal Family got a rude awakening to that fact when Princes Charles, William and Edward visited the region in the past six months ahead of the Jubilee.

Boris Johnson never goes down without a fight and halfway through his term he, earlier this week, employed the choice language of a rhythmic ancient mariner to say: “The headwinds are strong, but

our engines are stronger…”

--but he also knows these are not normal times and current headwinds are not generated by normal weather.

Across the Atlantic Ocean, US gas prices are also at an all-time high and inflation also at a 40year high. With consumer price inflation at 8.3 per cent in April, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, while admitting that she earlier “called it wrong” on inflation, also employed Johnsonian language on Thursday to say the US “is facing a slowdown, not a downturn…”

Britain is already planning for the 200th anniversary of the legal Abolition of Slavery in 2034. But freedom of the slaves was conditional on six years of giving the same slave labour to their former masters, free of chains and free of charge, until Indentureship allowed for replacement of the freed Africans by Indian labourers transported on the same slave ships.

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations’ collective call in 2013 for Reparations for Slavery and Native Genocide is approaching its 10th year.

The call by these 14 former British and European colonies for Reparations for

Slavery is one area Britain and PM Johnson will come face-to-face with, sooner than later.

With no sign Queen Elizabeth II plans to address the issue before departing the throne, a future King Charles will also get an earlier chance than expected to take the recent expressions of royal regret to the next logical level of making the simple ‘full and formal apology’ still being requested 188 years after London outlawed the atrocious Slave Trade.

The least Britain can do in these new times is to start climbing-down from its traditional high-handed Mother Country approach

and respond positively, and with all due respect, to the 14 sovereign Caribbean nations’ outstanding (eight years old) repeated requests for discussions with London and Brussels on repairing the continuing damage from Transatlantic Slavery.

If Britain and Europe continue to refuse to respond in quicker time to the growing demands for compensation through reparations from CARICOM, Africa and India, the next stop in the ex-colonies’ determined legal pursuit of Reparatory Justice will undoubtedly have to be the International Criminal Court.

SOME 2,000 part-time jobs have been allocated to residents of Region Three as government continues efforts countrywide to supplement incomes at the household level in light of the rising cost of living as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Vice-President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo made the announcement during a

community meeting at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, on Friday. The announcement by Dr Jagdeo means that government will be investing some $960M into the region through the programme.

Earlier this week, the Vice-President announced that 1,000 such jobs will be provided to residents of Region Five, but noted that this number is expected to increase due to the

high number of applicants there for the programme.

Persons employed under this programme will be placed at government offices, agencies or departments and in the case of Region Three, also do D&I work. Each will be paid $40,000 per month for 10 days’ work.

Dr Jagdeo explained that contrary to misinformation being peddled by elements of the

This means that after the one-year contract expires, it could be extended and the extension could be for an indefinite period.

Apart from Regions Three and Five, the parttime jobs programme has so far been rolled out in Region 10 where 1,000 persons have been employed; Region Two, where some 2,000 persons gained employment and Region Six, where 3,000 are now part of government offices, departments and agencies.

The PPP/C in its 2020 manifesto promised to create some 50,000 jobs

in its first five years in office. Thus far, thousands of jobs have been created through the roll out of large-scale government projects and private sector investments. Under the part-time jobs progamme, some 10,000 are expected to be created to support incomes at the household level.

The vice-President at a separate meeting at Crane, West Coast Demerara, also announced that some $100M has been allocated to farmers in the region to purchase fertilisers for their crops.

This sum will be utilised by both rice and cash crop farmers. The farmers will form themselves in a committee and the committee will

decide on the procurement and fair distribution of the commodity among their colleagues, both big and small. President Dr Irfaan Ali had announced that the government will provide some $1B in free fertilisers to farmers following a steep rise in prices for the commodity.

The prices for fertilisers on the world market rose by 80 per cent in 2021 and have already risen by a further 30 per cent since the start of 2022. The support to farmers with free fertilisers is part of the government’s effort to absorb the rising global costs for the commodity, and to prevent the costs being passed on to consumers.

Labour Ministry holds walk against child labour

UNDER the theme “Universal Social Protection to End Child Labour”, the Ministry of Labour, on Friday, held a walk in observance of World Day Against Child Labour which is observed on June 12.

Teen girl with lupus, kidney failure still awaiting transplant surgery

FOLLOWING her lupus diagnosis in 2020 and kidney failure diagnosis in 2021, 16-year-

old Adaicia Semple has learnt to get by with her illness.

Despite the pain, frustrations and challenges, the teen still manages to

have a positive outlook on life as she waits for a kidney transplant.

Lupus is a disease that occurs when your body’s immune system

attacks your own tissues and organs (autoimmune disease). Inflammation caused by lupus can affect different parts of the body, including your joints, skin,

The teen was set to have a kidney transplant in January of this year, however, it was first delayed following a blood transfusion.

Adaicia and her family were hoping that by now she would be able to get the transplant surgery.

Doctors, however, have since informed the teen that her surgery will be once again delayed as she is currently battling a ‘flare up’ of lupus which makes it difficult for doctors to operate.

According to her mother, Ulex Semple, doctors advised that the teenager’s lupus must be suppressed before they can move with the transplant surgery.

“Right now, I’m feeling much better, they [doctors] have me on some new dose of medication for the lupus and it is working pretty well, so I have been feeling much better now,” Adaicia said in an interview with Guyana Chronicle.

“Well, they (doctors) already explained to me that they can’t do the surgery now… it is frustrating but, according to the

Adaicia Semple doctors, because my lupus is not suppressed it can cause more damage,” the high-spirited teen commented.

Despite the long wait, Adaicia is optimistic that she will soon get better to move forward with the kidney transplant.

Since her diagnosis, the teen has not been able to partake in her usual routine. Nevertheless, she hopes to one-day return to her old self.

Once recovered, Adaicia hopes to complete her secondary education at the Berbice High School where she is currently a fourth form student, and to further her studies at President’s College and then the University of Guyana.

Meanwhile, the teen’s mother, Ulex, told this newspaper that it has not been easy on her as a parent watching her child in pain.

“About two months ago, the lupus flare. The doctor called us to do the cross examine test but the lupus keeps flaring. So, they were treating her; still treating her for the lupus and they will wait six months before they continue the process,” the mother explained.

The woman said also that her daughter is currently on medication to suppress her lupus symptoms.

Ulex noted that doctors advised moving forward could result in kidney failure even after the transplant, if her condition does not improve before the undertaking surgery.

Over 100 int’l, local companies on board for Building Expo return

WITH over 100 international and local companies set for International Building Expo 2022, Guyana’s construction sector will be propelled in a more innovative direction.

On Friday, the Ministry of Housing and Water’s Central Housing & Planning Authority (CH&PA) held a meeting to update sponsors and members of the public on the progress of the event.

The meeting was held at the National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD), where the Expo will be held from July

22-24, 2022.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal; Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues; Permanent Secretary, Andre Ally, and a number of sponsors were present.

Minister Croal noted the support of corporate Guyana thus far as most of the booths have been reserved.

Speaking on the agency’s role in the expo, Minister Croal said several model homes will be on display as a way of showcasing the many housing options available to Guyanese.

In her remarks, Minister Rodrigues said the Expo will serve as a blueprint for Guyana’s architectural future. It will see the introduction of 3D building technology in the country.

Additionally, environmentally sustainable homes built with recycled materials and other model homes will be on display at the expo. Construction for some of the model homes has already started on site.

Attorney Nirvan Singh Rice farmer dies in Mahaica accident denies private assault charge

JEUWEL Anthony Ramlall, 25, a rice farmer of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) died in an accident on Thursday night, after he lost control of his pick-up truck and ended in a trench on Good Hope, Mahaica Access Road, ECD. According to a Police Headquarters statement, the driver of the vehicle, PNN 6104, was consuming alcohol at a shop in Mahaica, in the company of a friend before entering his vehicle and driving off at a fast rate of speed.

Ramlall, who married only last year, reportedly lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a nearby trench. He was taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious condition.

The man was placed into another vehicle and transported to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced him dead on arrival.

The body is currently at the Jerrick’s Funeral Home awaiting autopsy as the investigation continues.

NIRVAN Singh, the son of former Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Carl Singh, was, on Friday, granted $100,000 bail after pleading not guilty to allegedly assaulting ex-police constable, Shawnette Bollers.

Singh, an attorney, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where the private criminal charge was read to him.

It is alleged that he, on March 20, 2022, at Mid-

dle and Cummings Streets, Georgetown, unlawfully and maliciously assaulted the woman.

The private charge was filed by Bollers through her lawyer, Eusi Anderson. The young attorney will return to court on July 6, 2022.

Bollers is reported to have been part of the security detail attached to the Singhs’ residence.

Back in April, Bollers had filed a private charge against Singh for allegedly using racial slurs against an Afro-Guyanese. On April 20,

Singh pleaded not guilty to that charge and was released on $100,000 by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.

However, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack, later discontinued the matter against Singh.

In a statement, the DPP had contended that there was inconsistency regarding the racial hostility allegation made by Bollers against Singh.

The DPP opined that the evidence was not consistent with the offence created

Bollers currently has a $150 million lawsuit against Singh at the High Court.

Man runs off leaving $8M worth of ‘weed’ in car RANKS from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) are currently on the hunt for a man, who abandoned his motorcar with $8 million worth of cannabis during a chase along the East Coast Demerara (ECD) corridor.

According to a CANU release, on Wednesday, officers conducted an operation in the vicinity of Hope Bridge, ECD, where they attempted to stop a white fielder wagon with the licence plate PAB1884.

stop, prompting CANU officers to give chase. The officers pursued the vehicle into Haslington New Scheme, where the driver of the motor vehicle stopped and fled into nearby bushes. Officers attempted to apprehend the

A search was conducted on the vehicle, which led to the discovery of several parcels of suspected cannabis.

The motor vehicle and the suspected narcotics were

transported to CANU Headquarters, where it tested positive for cannabis. The parcels weighed a total of 39.9 kilograms, with an estimated value of $8 million.

Driver accused of Reonol Williams’ death denies six charges, remanded to prison

DANIEL Melbourne, the driver who is accused of causing the death of Reonol Williams and then dumping his body in a weed-filled trench, appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, on Friday, where six charges were read against him.

The matter was heard by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

Melbourne, a 53-yearold musician of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD), pleaded not guilty to: causing death by dangerous driving, failure to report an accident, failure to render assistance after an accident, failure to produce vehicle for examination, giving false information to the police, and attempting to obstruct the course of justice.

The accident occurred on May 23, 2022, at Enmore Public Road, ECD, while Melbourne allegedly was driving motorcar PAB 2552.

He had reportedly picked up the injured man to take him to the hospital but relatives could not find him.

The victim’s decomposing remains were found in a trench at Coldingen, ECD, earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Williams’ sister, Sylvie, and other relatives were in court as they listened keenly to the proceedings. Attorney-at-law

Bernard DaSilva appeared in the interest of Williams’ family.

Police Prosecutor David Goodridge said that, according to the facts of the case, on the day in question, at about 00:20 hours, Melbourne was the driver of motorcar PAB 2552, and was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the Enmore Public Road at a fast rate.

He told the court that it is alleged that Williams exited a motor car, which was stationary on the said road, and Melbourne’s car collided with him.

Williams was thrown onto the road surface. The accused reportedly picked up Williams in an unconscious state and placed him into his motorcar under the pretext of taking him to the hospital for medical attention.

Goodridge told the court that Melbourne, however, stopped at Coldingen, ECD, and dumped Williams’ body in a trench. The driver then allegedly drove to South Haslington Access Road and abandoned his vehicle.

The court heard that, after receiving word of the accident, Williams’ relatives checked the hospitals on the East Coast of Demerara and in Georgetown, but could find no trace of him. As a result, they made a report to the police and Melbourne

was arrested.

Melbourne allegedly told investigators that he was not the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident. He was released on station bail.

Relatives, not satisfied with how the matter was being handled, started a media campaign during which they pleaded with members of the public to come forward with any information that could lead them to their missing relative.

The case was later handed over to investigators from the Major Crimes Department and on June 7, Melbourne was re-arrested.

Goodridge said that, based on information, Melbourne allegedly provided to investigators, Williams’ decomposing body was found face down in the trench at Coldingen.

Williams’ family positively identified the body and a post-mortem examination revealed that he died as a result of multiple injuries due to a motor vehicle accident.

The prosecutor strongly objected to Melbourne being released on bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the fact that a life was lost. He also emphasised that, based on his information, Melbourne lied to the police and is a flight risk.

attorney, Patrice Henry asked the court for his client to be released on reasonable bail.

According to Henry, since the discovery of the “suspected victim’s body”, his client has cooperated with the police. He also disclosed that the police are still awaiting the DNA results for the samples taken from the body.

Following the court hearing, Williams’ sister, Sylvie, spoke with the media. She said: “I do not have this hate for anybody. So, I also feel it for him (Melbourne). He is a human. It was the work of the devil.

It is not my place to condemn him because he is a human being. What I condemn is the act of the devil.”

The woman said that she is pleased with the actions of the Major Crimes investigators which led to the discovery of her brother’s body; however, she condemned the brutal actions of Melbourne, who she said lied to the police.

“He should have been human enough to carry my brother to the hospital…. He should’ve been alive. It was a brutal act,” the woman said.

Flood taskforce braces for weekend of heavy rainfall

clock to ensure that no administrative region in Guyana is neglected during

the current rainy season, a statement from the Civil Defence Commission

At a virtual National Taskforce on Flood Monitoring meeting on Thursday evening, the senior government official gave an update on his meeting with Georgetown’s Mayor Ubraj Narine and highlighted the needs of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).

He also informed the Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha and the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall about the identified needs, including personnel and fuel, the CDC statement said.

Last night’s meeting, headed by the Prime Minister, was based on the present weather forecast and recent significant precipitation which has caused several areas to be temporarily inundated.

On Wednesday, the CDC said, a mass of dry air had suppressed rainfall activities.

According to predictions, however, another tropical wave is expected to bring heavy rainfall over the weekend.

The National Weather Watch Centre predicts significant rain over the coastland, and regions Seven

(Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) beginning June 10.

Persons residing in potentially affected communities are encouraged to exercise caution, especially those with farmlands and livestock.

The Ministry of Agriculture has dispatched specialists from the Guyana Livestock and Development Authority (GLDA) to assess and assist farmers along the coastland, particularly those in regions Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

Some livestock and crops have been relocated by pontoons due to current impacts, the CDC statement continued.

To control floodwaters, The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) is working closely with the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, and the Ministry of Housing and Water, to aid in the clearing of drains and canals.

Special focus is placed on communities along the Mahaica and Mahaicony waterways, while some housing schemes under construction are being closely monitored

to ensure that activities do not affect drainage.

The CDC maintains consistent monitoring of all administrative regions, with special concern for the coastland and Region 10, the disaster management agency said.

Many areas have been experiencing fluctuating water levels based on rainfall, overtopping of waterways and water runoff. However, resources such as cleaning hampers, water purification tablets and water containers have been diverted to those affected areas.

The Diamond-Grove area on the East Bank of Demerara, and the Melanie-Buxton area, ECD have both experienced inundations. Relief supplies have been dispatched to the regional authorities for distribution to affected households.

More than $400M in contracts signed for reopening sugar estates

AS the government moves forward with the planned reopening of several estates, the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), on Friday, signed nine contracts valued in excess of $457 million for the procurement of critical machinery for the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).

The GuySuCo contract awards were part of a wider $491,567,360 in contracts signed by agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture on Friday. The monies are part of the ministry’s works programme for the year 2022.

Following his ascension to office in 2020, President, Dr Irfaan Ali, announced that his government will begin the process of reopening three of the four sugar estates that were closed by the previous APNU+AFC government.

don and Wales complete the list of the closed sugar estates.

The contracts will see works being done at the Rose Hall and Blairmont Sugar Estates in Region six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

Closure of these sugar estates saw an increase in unemployment as it was the main source of income in the sugar-producing districts.

Meanwhile, the New Guyana Marketing Corporation (New GMC) and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) also signed contracts for the supply of critical machinery totalling some $18,895,000 and $14,700,000, respectively.

During brief remarks, Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha said the investments show the government’s commitment to advancing the sector.

And those contractors that were given jobs in the estates, I want to ensure that you guys comply with the time, because we have time to reopen these estates and also to put in critical capital investments in the operating estates,” Minister Mustapha charged.

Guyana chasing first win against unbeaten Jamaica ….Women’s T20 Blaze continurs today

A WASHOUT encounter against Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday gave Guyana their only two points in the ongoing Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s T20 Blaze and now they come up against the unbeaten table-leaders Jamaica today, at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

Both teams lost their opening game on TuesdayGuyana fell short by seven runs against defending champions Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago suffered a 79-run defeat to Jamaica.

Guyana face Jamaica in round three from 14:30hrs, Barbados and Windward Islands play from 10:00hrs

and the day’s final match is between the Leeward Islands and Trinidad & Tobago from 19:00hrs.

Though Guyana and Trinidad did not get to play, the other two matches on Thursday went ahead, and Barbados inflicted a commanding nine-wicket defeat on the Leeward Islands.

Hayley Matthews led

the charge for Barbados by picking up 3-9 off four overs which was the main act to undermine the Leeward Islands for 60 all out in 18.2 overs. Shanika Bruce did the early damage with 3-15 off four overs.

Extras top-scored with 18, while Rosalie Dolabaille made 14 not out off 44 balls and Tiffany Thorpe scored 10.

West Indies beaten by Pakistan again; lose series

(ESPNCRICINFO) Mohammad Nawaz allayed any concerns Pakistan might have had about posting a below-par total, producing the best bowling performance of his career to bundle West Indies out for 155.

Coming in with Pakistan under pressure after West Indies’ pugnacious start to the chase of 276, Nawaz struck four times to gut the visitors’ middle order, figures of 4 for 18 in his allotted ten sealing West Indies fate, and giving Pakistan a 120-run win to wrap up the series 2-0.

West Indies’ innings began disastrously, with Shaheen Afridi removing their best batter Shai Hope in the first over, trapping him on his crease as he spooned a catch to cover.

But what followed suggested West Indies were giving the chase a serious go, with the powerplay dominated by positive, fearless stroke play from Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks.

Haris Rauf was the

man they targeted early on, a gloriously nonchalant, pulled six over square leg from Mayers perhaps the shot of the innings.

Mayers then smashed Mohammad Wasim for a couple of fours and Shaheen for six straight back over his head as the visitors put on 71 in the powerplay.

But off that phase’s final ball, Wasim cleaned him up to open the door for Pakistan’s spinners, and it was time for Nawaz to shine.

Nawaz’s fourth ball was a harbinger of what would follow.

He flighted it up to Brandon King, drawing him out of his crease before getting the ball to spin away and kiss the edge.

The game had swung, despite a brief fourth-wicket stand, and Nawaz soon sent the last set batter, Brooks, on his way for 42, trapping him in front as he horribly miscued a sweep to leave them tottering at 102 for 4.

But Nawaz was only halfway through.

West Indies’ last hopes, Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran were sent back within three balls of each other as Nawaz exercised his full mastery over the opposition, varying the flight and exploiting the dip and turn to penetrate both players’ defences.

Shadab Khan, at the other end, sent Romario Shepherd packing; by this time all realistic attempts at a chase were done.

West Indies had lost four wickets for 18 runs, and while they limped along for another 35 runs, it was only a matter of time before they were put out of their misery.

If you watched that Pakistan innings up first, you’d have seen what was coming, and if you didn’t, you’d know exactly how it panned out. Fakhar Zaman fell early, before Imam-ulHaq and Babar Azam put on their customary century stand.

You’ve seen it before, you’ll see it again; you saw it today.

Pakistan were fortunate enough to win the toss and not have to put their bowlers through another rigorous day out in the heat. Hasan Ali was finally taken out of the side, with Mohammad Wasim Jr brought in.

But at the top, it was a similar pattern for Pakistan, with a struggling Fakhar falling for an unconvincing 28-ball 17 as Pakistan made a slow start in the face of accurate West Indian bowling.

It was Anderson Phillip, replacing Jayden Seales in the visitors’ XI, who got the wicket after Zaman top-edged one.

Babar and Imam took over from there, steadying the innings for the next fifty runs or so before slowly moving through the gears and nudging the run rate up.

It was nothing dramatic, just the usual platform-building, but as so often happens when these two are on song, it looked like there was no breaking that stand. Each of them

brought up half-centuries; the sixth consecutive fifties for each of them, and little appeared to stand in the way of them bringing up personal three-figure scores.

The only way a wicket would come about was if it were self-inflicted, and that indeed was what happened. In a moment that swung the momentum of the innings around, Imam set off for a run without looking up at his captain, who was busy ball-watching.

When Babar looked up, Imam was barely two metres from him, and his fate was sealed. The opener smashed his bat into the turf in frustration while he walked off, but West Indies had been gifted a creek of hope.

Babar was undone by some brilliant left-arm orthodox bowling from Akeal Hosein, who managed both grip and turn on a surface that had offered up neither in such generous quantities two days ago.

Looking to play against the turn saw the Pakistan captain fall 23 short of a hundred Pakistan have come to expect from him almost every game, his leading edge

finding a cover fielder.

Mohammad Haris came in and sought to inject some pace in the innings without ever looking like he had the ability to, in the face of a couple of quality West Indian bowlers, and promptly nicked off for a run-a-ball six.

The final ten overs saw the West Indian bowling at its best, putting pressure on Pakistan with clumps of dot balls thanks to some glorious execution, both in terms of line and length and changes of pace. Alzarri Joseph led the way in that regard, his figures of 10-1-33-2 just rewards for what he produced.

Khushdil Shah found batting a struggle, and while Pakistan got away with the occasional boundary and big hit, the general trend by this stage all favoured West Indies. The last 15 overs saw just 89 runs scored as six wickets fell, and while Pakistan’s middle-order questions only deepened, West Indies will have sniffed an opportunity. It had seemed like a very realistic possibility until Nawaz came in and snuffed it out emphatically.

Among the attendees at the reception were Directors of Petra, Troy Mendonca and Marlan Cole; Guyana Football Federation (GFF) representative Franklin Wilson and Ministry of Education’s representative, Kurt Braithwaite, among others.

The nine programmes include Milo U18 Tournament, Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers U18 League, Courts Pee Wee Competition, Smalta Girls U11 Tournament, ExxonMobil Boys & Girls U14 Competition, KFC Goodwill, Corona

Beer Futsal, Limacol Round Robin/Knockout and Turbo KO Football Tournaments.

By Rawle Toney DATING back to their first meeting in senior men’s International football in 1973, Guyana have never beaten Haiti – something coach Jamaal Shabazz is hoping to change when the two sides meet today, from 16:00hrs, at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora.

It will be the third match for both teams in the 20222023 CONCACAF Nations League, but it’s the Golden Jaguars who sit atop Group B of League B with six points, while the Haitians are second in the standings with four.

Guyana will enter today’s encounter on back-to-back wins, coming against Montserrat (2-1) and Bermuda (2-1). Haiti, however, had played to a goalless stalemate against Bermuda, followed by a 3-2 victory over Montserrat.

“This is a huge game for us, especially since Guyana have never beaten Haiti. So it provides an opportunity for us to get a victory over a Caribbean giant,” Shabazz said in the pre-game comment ahead of a colossal fixture.

by Haiti and according to Shabazz, chasing history will be an uphill task, adding “of course, we’ll have to work hard because it’s not going to be in any way an easy match.

In contrast, Haiti are the Caribbean’s 10th-ranked team in the CONCACAF ranking. They have a global ranking of 90 in contrast to Guyana’s 174.

“We have tremendous respect for Haiti, but this is our doorstep and we have to deal with them here. I’m confident the spirit of the team has that fight to match the Haitians’ at home. We want to encourage them to come out and support the team, but, if they can’t come, send some good vibes,” Shabazz said.

Shabazz was mum about the team’s composition likely to face Haiti. However, given the show of depth in the roster against Bermuda, it would be interesting to see what the Trinidadian coach comes up with to match the pace and tactical ability of the Haitians.

Haiti were relegated from League A, where they had finished at the bottom of Group D. They have so far shown their superiority in League B, despite not finding the net against Montserrat.

Guyana, on the other hand, had finished second behind Jamaica in the inaugural Nations League and after two matches they remained in contention for winning the group.

Shabazz now has the services of Forge FC’s striker, Emery Welshman, who joined the team after Guyana had beaten Montserrat. He came on as a second-half substitute against Bermuda.

Welshman has been clinical for Guyana over the years, scoring in crucial moments as well. Fans will be excited to see Welshman pairing with once against 18-year-old sensation Omari Glasgow, along with Torell Ondaan and Trayon Bobb.

Glasgow is competing for Major League Soccer (MLS) side, Chicago Fire, in the MLS Next Pro League, scoring twice in his three outings.
