–– Andrews urges minibus operators WITH rapid development expected in Guyana very soon, the country stands to lose in its transportation sector if greater enforcement is not enacted against mini-bus operatives who refuse to accept lawfulness and uniformity.

“It cannot be business as usual. We’ve realised that otherwise to first-oil and these things that will bring a lot of first-world standards to us, we of ourselves need to put ourselves in order,” President of the United Minibus Union (UMU), Eon Andrews, said recently on the Guyana Chronicle’s, Vantage Point.

Andrews pointed out that the ABC countries (America, Britain and Canada) over the years have urged their citizens travelling to Guyana to refrain from using the country’s most basic public transport system for a variety of reasons; this, he emphasised, can only be reversed through improvement.

With developments already in the pipeline for the Linden to Lethem road, the UMU President warned that if local operatives do not ‘look sharp,’ they can lose their trade to outside parties.

“I have this fear ---and it

has been expressed in many corners --- that with the development of certain sectors in the country…we are going to fix that road from Lethem to Linden which means that those little buses that run that route will be affected and they may well decide that they are going to come and dump themselves into the system in town,” Andrews said.

Guyana’s UMU recently received a visit from the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), which has also advised that the only way Guyana’s transport system can survive the coming boom is if it shapes up, and shapes up fast.

Being organised, uniformed and the setting up of various branches of the union would help to ensure that operatives adhere to the restrictions required before plying routes, such as the Linden to Lethem route, set to be in demand.

Andrews also pointed out that the coming of greater development to Guyana will also raise the bar in the local standards expected, which can negatively affect mini-bus operatives who continue to rebel against positive change.

“There’ve been a lot of complaints going in to the Ministry of Business Consumers Affairs Department about the conduct of these operatives and we cannot deny that it is so. Mini-buses have and still have, to a point, a very bad reputation,” he said.

“There are very good persons there, there are decent persons there, there are valedictorians there, but that’s the job they choose to make money, so there are persons who conform to that culture of greed and lawlessness…because they don’t want to feel odd,” he added.

Andrews told the Guyana Chronicle that there is much work to be done and it cannot be accomplished by just one agency.

Over the years, since being elected president of the union, he has been working to see mini-bus operatives organised through uniforms and adherence to the existing Mini-bus Code of Conduct.

The UMU continues to work along with other stakeholders such as the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for the training of mini-bus operators; the Guyana Road Safety Council and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.

UMU President Eon Andrews Andrews said that operators have to want to be a part of the change; he said too that the authorities must make greater efforts at enforcing the laws. “I must say that the police have been working a lot to get this thing going, but it is more about changing a culture. The laws are there, but there is this culture of greed and indiscipline,” Andrews explained.

He added: “The Code of Conduct is working to a point where the police are doing what they have to do; the ministry is working; there are persons within the United Minibus Union that are working; the Road Safety Council is trying to come up with new things, but the enforcement in most cases rests with the police.”

He is happy that more citizens are reporting conduct-related incidents as advised by the union.

However, he revealed that many mini-bus users are still condoning and even encouraging the lawlessness of mini-bus operators, especially when it comes to matters of speed, inappropriate music and overcrowding.

He said that even before laws are eventually amended to demand greater compliance from mini-bus operators, these operators should take this period to set themselves in order to avoid stringent penalties.

The UMU President is also calling on the Ministry of Business to increase its coming budget to cater for more sensitisation programmes on the importance of lawful mini-bus operations, to operators and citizens alike.

By Lisa Hamilton WITH just months before new General and Regional Elections, several new political parties have sprung up to contest against the country’s two major political rivals, the ruling A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/ AFC) and People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/Civic).

However, some in society are of the opinion that serious political parties should not be waiting until an election period to emerge, and must have more going for them than simply being a “pressure group”.

“There are parties that arise out of the political and social situation in the country, and then there are parties that are formed around elections time, and I think a lot of the newer parties that you’re seeing now are parties that are formed around the election time, which means that they are formed just to contest the elections,” Working People’s Alliance (WPA) Executive Member, Dr. David Hinds said in an invited comment on Sunday.

The Federal United Party (FED-UP) was launched on January 11, 2019; the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP) was launched on January 12, 2019; A New and United Guyana (ANUG) was launched on January 18, 2019; and the most recent, The Citizens Initiative (TCI) was launched on October 17, 2019.

Another party, Changed Guyana (CG), is expected to be launched on October 29, 2019 at the Pegasus Hotel.

The first three parties emerged just weeks following the vote of no-confidence against the

Former GCCI President Dr. Vishnu Doerga government by former ‘Coalition’ MP Charrandass Persaud, just when General and Regional elections were expected some three months later.

With the legal process climbing all the way to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) and the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) taking some time to indicate its readiness, President David Granger, on September 25, 2019 announced that March 2, 2020 is the date for new elections. The most recent party was launched weeks later.

NOTHING NEW According to Dr. Hinds, it is common practice for these little political parties to spring up around elections time. ANUG’s presidential candidate, Ralph Ramkarran said as much in his Sunday edition of ‘The Conversation Tree’; to wit, that the emerging of new parties near to election time is “not a new phenomenon”.

However, the public outcry in some quarters is that while these parties were formed in the hope of garnering at least 6,000 votes and more to secure a few seats in Parliament, many do not even garner a quarter of the number of votes to

According to the Laws of Guyana, each party must be contesting at least 50 per cent of geographically determined seats; must contest in at least six of the 10 geographic constituencies, and each political party must have at least one-third women on the list of representatives.

In the past, while new parties have been launched publicly, some have been unable to meet these basic requirements.

And, even though there is no mistaking his happiness to see more political groups join the fray, Dr. Hinds readily admitted that their emergence is ill-timed.

“I think in the environment that we have now in Guyana, it’s very polarised, and I don’t think that voters in either of the two big ethnic blocs are about to experiment with a new party, because that’s what they will be doing if they vote for these small parties. It would be an experiment, and I don’t think voters are in the mood to experiment, because, you know, there is a lot at stake in these elections,” he said.

He is of the opinion that while the new parties have come out in strong support of constitutional reform and good governance, they bring “no big policy initiative” to the table; initiatives such as the WPA’s Direct Cash

And even though ANUG, which is primarily concerned with constitutional reform, and the LJP, a strong advocate for Amerindian issues, may do better than other parties, what they both boil down to in the long-run are “pressure groups” rather than parties that are well-rounded.

NO ROOM IN THE INN “If a small party wants to survive in the political environment that we have, then they have, in one way or another, to form partnerships with the bigger parties, because the two big parties are the ones that monopolise the electoral landscape,” Dr. Hinds opined.

However, at least two of the most recent parties have stated that they have no intention of joining either major political party, while the LJP is currently in talks with APNU about a possible merger.

Meanwhile, former Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) President Dr. Vishnu Doerga is of the belief that if more small-party representatives get into parliament, the more accountable can the government be held.

He told the Guyana Chronicle that constitutional reform is necessary to bring about this change of which he speaks.

“If you don’t have specialised parties who represent specific interest groups, be it business, women, technology or whatever, you’ll end up with these large blocks of parties that basically just follow one agenda,” Doerga said, adding: “Just studying our Constitution as well, looking at how it excludes the formation of such parties, it’s something that needs to happen.”

The need for variety in representation is something that leader of the TCI, author and Cultural Policy Adviser, Ruel Johnson is in agreement with.

He explained that while his party closely watched the play-out of the challenges to the no-confidence motion before its launch, win or lose, it does not intend to fall by the wayside following the coming elections.

The TCI, he said, was formed with the main goal of teaching and demonstrating civic education, and that much like other parties formed in the past, it can make a lasting difference.

“Every single party that exists currently in Guyana has emerged from nothing. In the pre-independence era, with the great colonial powers lording it over the country, the PPP emerged. From the PPP, the PNC was split off, and they grew. In the 1970s, from nothing, the WPA, which is a currently a constituent party in the current governing coalition, went from zero to a player,” Johnson said, adding: “Any arguments that are saying that time is

short are both unscientific, as well as they ignore the reality of history and overall social context.”

Social media is just one strategy which the TCI will use to garner as much votes as it can to be well represented in Parliament.

QUESTION OF MATURITY Amidst these aspirations of all new political parties involved, the question of whether Guyanese are now more willing than before to vote beyond race is still being debated.

“In a plural country, in a diverse country, there has to be political plurality and political diversity,” Johnson asserted, even as he sought to remind that Guyana’s ethnic division was not planned in villages, but engineered specifically by the country’s former colonial powers.

Optimistically, Dr. Doerga believes that the country possesses a large educated population below 40 years of age which would be able to make decisions for themselves beyond the boundary of race.

Ramkarran couldn’t agree more. “Some are relying on the substantial youth vote on the basis that the youth are less motivated by ethnic considerations and more by matters of principle and policy,” he said.

As he observed in his article, there is at least one other group organising itself to launch an additional political party.

However, with the parties springing up so close to elections, Dr. Doerga is advising that better organisation and a “much better game plan” are needed. He believes that it is still not too late for the parties to shape up to make a difference.

Hong Kong: Petrol bombs tossed at police in latest protest (BBC) A group of hardcore protesters threw petrol bombs at a police station as violence flared in Hong Kong during a banned march that drew tens of thousands.

Authorities refused permission for a march through an upmarket shopping area, citing public order concerns.

But large numbers defied

authorities, with a small group of black-clad protesters attacking a police station.

Hong Kong has been convulsed by pro-democracy protests for four months.

The unrest in the territory, which is part of China but enjoys unique freedoms, has been the worst crisis since the British handover

in 1997.

At the Tsim Sha Tsui police station, officers fired tear gas as the building’s gate was set on fire. A water cannon was then deployed to clear the area, which would normally be thronged with Sunday shoppers.

In one controversial incident, a water cannon truck fired powerful jets of blue liquid at protesters outside a mosque.

Police said the water cannon had “accidentally affected the entrance and front gate” of the mosque.

Water cannons have been laced with blue dye to identify those hit at a later stage

The Muslim Council of Hong Kong said the mosque was not targeted by police, whose officers later apologised and helped with the clean-up effort.

Elsewhere, shops and Chinese banks were vandalised. A large blaze, started by protesters, engulfed the store of a Chinese smartphone maker in Mong Kok. Not all of Sunday’s demonstrators engaged in violence. Although the rally was illegal, it began peacefully.

What caused Sunday’s clashes?

The anger of the crowd was partly fuelled by an attack on pro-democracy leader Jimmy Sham earlier this week which left him in hospital. He was set upon by five men with hammers in the Mong Kok district of Kowloon.

On Saturday, another man who was reportedly handing out pro-democracy flyers was stabbed.

In recent weeks, numbers attending protests have dropped from their peak.

The movement has seen hundreds of thousands taking part in demonstrations on several occasions.

This Sunday’s rally rivalled those numbers, according to organisers, who said around 350,000 people attended. Attendance figures from Hong Kong police are not yet available.

One protester, Daniel Yeung, said Sunday’s turnout far exceeded his expectations, adding that “Hong Kongers won’t easily give up their right to demonstrate”.

“The government are now refusing to authorise any peaceful protest,” another demonstrator named Avery said on Sunday. “That means anyone who comes out will inherently be breaking the law. So that’s the tactic the Hong Kong gov-

ernment is using.”

Is there any solution in sight?

Originally, the protests were prompted by outrage at a new law that would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China.

People in Hong Kong are fiercely protective of their legal system and enhanced personal rights, which are governed under an arrangement known as “one country, two systems”.

But they have grown increasingly concerned that China seeks greater control.

The extradition bill was eventually scrapped but the protest movement has broadened to include four other demands: For the protests not to be characterised as a “riot” Amnesty for arrested protesters An independent inquiry into alleged police brutality Implementation of complete universal suffrage Hong Kong’s embattled leader Carrie Lam is seen by many pro-democracy campaigners as a mouthpiece for Beijing – something she fiercely denies.

Ms Lam was forced to abandon her major annual speech in parliament this week after opposition lawmakers heckled her, brandishing banners and shouting slogans.

Her speech, calling for an end to the protests, eventually had to be delivered by pre-recorded video.

US lawmakers, meanwhile, have backed the pro-democracy movement by passing a bill in the House of Representatives supporting them.

American companies, including video game firm Blizzard and the National Basketball Association, have also found themselves embroiled in the political crisis.

T&T: Govt learns lesson after last year’s floods

(TRINIDAD GUARDIAN) The Ministry of Works is working on a comprehensive flood mitigation plan. Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan said the Government has learned from last year’s devastating floods and that a lot of measures have been implemented by state agencies to better prepare them for a natural disaster.

For this year, he said, the ministry has undertaken 400 projects with de-silting, clearing of watercourses, construction of retaining walls and installation of water pumps which have seen a faster water runoff whenever it rains.

He said what contributed to Greenvale’s flooding a year ago was the overflowing of the Arima and Caroni Rivers.

One contract involving extensive clean up, widening and desilting of the Caroni River was $16 million.

Sinanan said several water channels throughout the country have been unable to handle the volume of rainfall.

“We do have a lot of development in the country over the last 20 to 25 years....unfortunately our infrastructure did not keep up with it.”

To deal with the flooding, Sinanan said short, medium and long term plans must be developed.

“We looked at some of the flood plans and studies that were done before and we started to take out the low hanging fruits from them.”

He said the CAF Development Bank will examine those studies and develop an operational plan.

“They are looking in terms of funding it for us. The bank has brought in some specialists to work with us and come up with a work programme.”

This programme will soon be submitted to Cabinet.

“At the end of the day, we would have learned a lot from what happened last year. In that Greenvale area now we have emergency evacuation processes. We have smaller boats located in the Greenvale area...a lot of work went into the area. We saw the affects of it. We would have come a long way from where we were last year.”

Sinanan said there was no quick fix to flooding.

HDC: Residents pleased with work undertaken In July, the HDC received a pre-action protocol letter from affected Greenvale residents who through their attorneys cited negligence and

breach of duty on HDC’s part.

The letter stated the HDC was reckless and in breach of its statutory duty in constructing the development on the flood plains of the Caroni River.

81 residents are seeking costs, interest on damages, aggravated and or exemplary damages, damages for distress and anxiety, damages for personal and property and damages for devaluing of interest to their homes.

The residents stated that the HDC ignored all warnings and rejections not to construct homes in the flood-prone area.

After torrential rainfall on October 18 and 19 last year, Greenvale and other parts of the country were overwhelmed by floodwaters.

HDC built 435 units in Greenvale which has three phases.

Last November, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said over $30 million had been spent on flood relief with an additional $30 million in grants to affected homeowners.

Some homeowners received a minimum of $15,000, while others got up to $20,000.

Communications manager of the HDC Dike Noel refused to comment on legal action taken against the corporation by the residents, stating that the matter was before the court.

However, he said from June, the HDC implemented several mitigation initiatives in the community.

Among the measures was the raising of the containment berm to fully surround the community, raising the roadways surrounding the community and constructing a road to connect La Horquetta South and Greenvale Park to serve as an alternative route for residents.

He said work continues on the construction and installation of an automated flood pumping station to increase pumping capacity at the detention ponds.

At Oropune Gardens, another community hit by the flood, Noel said water courses were cleaned and pumps placed to treat with any rising water levels.

HDC’s managing director Brent Lyons said the HDC “understands the unease that some residents may feel when there is inclement weather” hence the reason why they ensured mitigation works were completed before the start of

the rainy season.

“We also ensured that that our contractors were able to complete major works on the affected homes, notwithstanding the challenges that were encountered along the way.”

He said feedback from residents indicate that they are pleased with the work done.

Lyons promised to monitor “vulnerable communities” to minimise flooding in HDC communities.

Chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation Paul Leacock—under whose purview Greenvale, Oropune and St Helena fall— said the corporation retained 120 temporary workers in June to clear drains in communities that were affected.

Short-term employment, Leacock said, cost the corporation $3 million while the bill for good and services was $300,000.

“Other works could have cost us about $1 million. One of the most important steps is that in the HDC’s housing settlements that were affected we met with the corporation and came up with a plan to evacuate residents using maps.”

Leacock said anyone who faces a flood will live in fear of being affected again.

“There is nothing we can do about the fear. What we can do is be prepared.”

He said all agencies are better prepared to handle a major flood.

During tropical storm Karen they got into the effected communities early.

“Remember the fundamental issue is that once you have more rains our drains and watercourses would not be able to take the volume of water. Flooding has been happening all over the world with climate change.”

He said the indiscriminate dumping of garbage and old furniture and appliances in waterways and individuals using lengths of bamboo to grow vine crops on the river banks have been contributing factors to the floods.

“The bamboo would rot and come down the river blocking the water’s flow.

As a result, we end up with large catastrophies based on man-made contributions. We are contributing to our own demise.”

Leacock said farmers needed to use other methods of farming which they were looking at, while citizens have to become environmentally conscious.

T&T: I have been informed of death threats against me – Faris Al-Rawi

(TRINIDAD GUARDIAN) Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi has confirmed that he was informed of death threats made against him in the past two months.

“I can confirm the truth of the PM’s statements,” he said in a brief response to questions from Guardian Media yesterday.

“Law enforcement agencies uncovered and have been dealing with the death threats against me,” Al-Rawi said yesterday.

“I’d rather not say anything further on the matter.”

On Friday, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley revealed that an emergency meeting was held recently to organise protection for Al-Rawi after the assassination plot was uncovered. The PM made the startling revelation as he addressed People’s National Movement supporters at a post-Budget public meeting at Piggott’s Corner in Belmont.

The PM also alleged that there were two hits put on his life just before the 2015 general election.

Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith confirmed that there were in fact two hits put on Rowley’s life while he was the leader of the Opposition back in 2015.

At that time, Griffith was the Minister of National Security.

“Based on the PM’s comments on threat to him, I can confirm,” he said in a text exchange yesterday.

Griffith said that “several intensified security measures were established” at that time.

Faris Al-Rawi

“It started when I was MNS (Minister of National Security).”

Griffith was National Security Minister from September 2013 to February 2015.

Griffith, however, said he could not comment on any threats to Al-Rawi, a citizen, if they had not made it known to the public first.

The PM’s claims were met

with strong reaction from the Opposition United National Congress (UNC).

However, the UNC focused their collective ire on statements made by National Security Minister Stuart Young and not the Prime Minister.

Yo u n g s a i d t h a t t w o high-ranking UNC members were actively conversing with criminal elements and that they were being directed on who to appoint in the upcoming Local Government elections by the same gang leaders and criminals.

Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal yesterday called the allegations an “unparalleled, preposterous lie!”

He said, “I can say here tonight that persons at the highest level of the UNC had been engaging...the person who was engaging in that is a member, an elected Member of Parliament.”

Though he did not call names, Young said in addition to the MP—whom he said was from “deep South”—another UNC member who was formerly affiliated with a state entity was in contact with the gang leaders. He said the two gave a gang leader employment at the Housing Development Corporation in 2013.

Leadership and decision-making

E

ACH person is different: some are loud and energetic, others are quiet and thoughtful; the combinations of qualities are practically infinite. And, it is impossible to know who is dishonest and bad, or, who is truthful and good, based on those qualities. This is true too, of leaders: some are charismatic and enjoy riding horses; others are quiet and prefer to read books and play chess. It is, therefore, unfair and misleading to judge how good a leader is on the basis of superficial traits. Since we live in a democratic country, we have a responsibility to choose our political leaders; we should therefore know how to make such assessments and comparisons. It makes sense then, to rely on the opinions of experts to learn how to do that.

The subjects of leadership and the qualities that make a good leader have been exhaustively studied and are well understood. The American author John Maxwell defined a good leader as, “One who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” In other words, he knows where he wants to go, he leads by example, and he is able to communicate that path to followers. Historians and other specialists who study leaders say that all good leaders have certain specific qualities: for example, all good leaders are honest and have integrity.

Dwight Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United

States, said, “The supreme quality of leadership is unquestionable integrity.” Based on that, any person whose honesty is questionable may be disqualified from a position of leadership. That is, if we even have cause to question from where a person obtained unexplained wealth, for example, we may wish to reconsider giving that person a leadership position.

All good leaders have confidence. They need not speak loudly, but they are assertive and sure of themselves. They are calm, collected, and thoughtful; they are able to quietly inspire others to overcome challenges. John Quincy Adams, America’s sixth President, said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a good leader.”

Good leaders are passionate and committed; they believe in their cause. In fact, one good measure of commitment is whether the leader is willing to get out of his office, go into the field and get his hands dirty. A man who sits in an executive chair all the time and makes speeches from the comfort of an air-conditioned office is not a good candidate for leadership.

A good leader has a clear vision of goals, and a definite strategy to achieve those goals. Further, he is able to communicate his goals and strategies to his followers.

Followers will notice too, that a good leader is decisive

Time to eradicate the cancer of racial prejudice Dear Editor,

HE fact that a deep racial divide exists in Guyana between citizens of Indian descent and those of African ancestry is well known. However, unfortunately, the fact that Indigenous Guyanese have been the victims of racism has been largely ignored or overlooked; and, when indigenous citizens are attacked or otherwise victimised, such behaviour is often attributed to some other factor, such as religion, political beliefs, etc, rather than racial prejudice, even though there may be overwhelming evidence that racism is the driving factor.

Racism is defined as the belief in the superiority of one race over another. It may also mean prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against other people because they are of a different race or ethnicity. Modern variants of racism are often based on social perceptions of biological differences between peoples; and although scientists have found no biological basis for racial categorisation, the notion persists, even in the minds of the better educated.

We recall that in December 2014, then President Donald Ramotar said that, “You don’t know anything about Jagdeo; if he bin hay he might a slap yo, coz you stupid.” The obnoxious remark was directed to Mr John Adams, an indigenous Guyanese. While such disrespect directed against indigenous Guyanese may be blatantly racist, there are certainly more subtle forms of the disease.

What of persons referring to indigenous Guyanese as b*** people? What of the employer who will not hire indigenous Guyanese? What of the worker who verbally or physically attacks an indigenous Guyanese, yet, never disrespects any other colleague of his own ethnic background?

Evidently, editor, such matters should be addressed if we are to make progress as a nation.

For years, under the People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) reign, indigenous peoples had been neglected. Of course, this sort of systemic racism has been eradicated by the APNU+AFC coalition government. President Granger has said that social cohesion, which has been a key area of focus for his administration, is rooted in respect for the racial, religious and social groups in society, particularly of minority groups. Unfortunately, the disease remains ingrained in the minds of too many.

It is saddening that racism of all types remains a problem. I am particularly disgusted as an indigenous Guyanese that prejudice not only appears to persist against Guyana’s first peoples, but the problem is largely ignored and hidden. Additionally, those decisions are often creative and innovative; good leaders often think outside the box, while maintaining an empathetic connection with followers. Steve Jobs, American businessman, said, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” Good leaders, then, are not afraid to propose new ideas and follow through on them.

Guyanese are just now beginning to understand that decisions made by citizens have consequences. Examples on the international political scene make clear that poorly made decisions – even in advanced democracies – will result in bad outcomes. It is therefore important – particularly in our young democracy – that we take our responsibilities seriously; that we desist from choosing our leaders based on who may have the loudest voice, or some other unimportant factor. Rather, we should carefully assess potential representatives on the basis of abilities and merit that matter, and make decisions based on those objective assessments; the future of our country, and the quality of the lives of our children depend on our decisions.

E applaud the quick action of His Excellency the President of Guyana. We in Friendship have taken responsibility and action by having a community meeting, a vigil and 100+ signatures on a ‘NEVER AGAIN’ petition. We are very sad at the continued accident tragedies on the East Bank road and especially in Friendship. The benefits to the families of the deceased and a Commission of Inquiry are all important, but will it stop the next horrendous accident?

The answer is NO. We have signed the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ petition. We want changes on the roads in Friendship and on the East Bank. We are calling on the President and the Ministers of Public Security and Infrastructure to take the same quick action now.

Beyond Breast Cancer Awareness Month T Dear Editor,

HREE years ago, I wrote an editorial piece titled, “Why pay attention to breast cancer during the month of October.” It was my first time writing an editorial piece, which may not seem to be a big deal, but back then, it felt like a big deal.

For my first piece, I wanted to write something that was honest and open to the topic of breast cancer. When I had this idea of writing a piece on breast cancer, I felt as if it would have been a perfect opportunity to interview a breast cancer survivor.

This is not to be mistaken as a classic example of tokenism, but I felt as if I needed a personal experience to relay the importance of empathy and how truthful stories of persons who can serve as a living testament can impact lives. I messaged Devika Tinsarran on Facebook after reading countless articles on her work as a breast cancer awareness advocate. She was open about meeting me, which initially surprised me, since I felt as if she would have felt as if I was “using her for the story.” However, I got the complete opposite reaction from her; she was a kind soul who willingly shared her story with me and I empathised with her struggles as it reminded me of how I felt watching my mother struggle with other health conditions. So, in this article, I plan to honour a friend, Tia Tinsarran. Beloved by many, forgotten by none.

One of the core points of my previously written article to which I alluded above was questioning the motives of the “pink ribbon” during this month. Many corporate enterprises adopt the pink logo on their company logos, staff uniform, office supplies, etc.

Although, I personally cannot say whether this activity is done as their corporate social responsibility or a business move, the awareness is being carried out successfully as the general public can benefit from possible discounted or even free services to access mammograms or a doctor’s appointment. The GRPA is an example of this, since it has

been utilising its collaboration with GTT to provide screening for not just breast cancer, but also for other reproductive cancers, including testicular cancer, prostate cancer etc.

Needless to say, awareness is important, but awareness must lead to action. The colour pink has already been established as the colour for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Since its inauguration in 1985, October has been signified as the month to encourage screening for breast cancer, while providing the necessary information for people to learn how to properly screen themselves for any abnormal lumps in their breasts. However, information on breast cancer shouldn’t be just limited to October or to its representation by colour. When we talk about breast cancer, we need to fully understand that breast cancer isn’t easy to live with.

For this reason, we often refer to patients diagnosed with breast cancer as “survivors” or “warriors.” It’s important to avoid using a word “victim” to describe a person who was diagnosed with breast cancer, since it perpetuates a negative feeling of oneself. Breast cancer is a dreadful medical condition that affects physical, mental and even sexual health.

There’s no reason to cover up what this medical condition truly is. By pretending that it is just about sharing pink and going on a morning walk in October, you are minimising the experiences of millions of breast-cancer survivors across the world. Personally, this monthly observance can sometimes paint the image of how persons who are not directly or indirectly affected by it lack empathy. Now I know that may seem bold to write, but just hear me out.

When you see a person post about the pink ribbon, do you think he/she is posting to make people aware of breast cancer, or is this another situation where everyone seems to follow the crowd? By the way, I’m not encouraging any sort of hate towards people who “follow the crowd in posting ribbons or any breast-cancer awareness materials for the sake of likes,” but I’m actually encouraging people to think before they post something

that isn’t genuine. A little introspection can go a far way from you being a person who doesn’t understand, to a person “who just gets it,” you know.

Let’s see how many words I can use to replace the word “breasts.”: jugs, mugs, balloons, boobies, boobs, tits, Sally (or whatever name you call yours or others). After reading all of these words, I can assume your facial expression was either a surprised look, or you may have even giggled. I felt like adding humour to this article before highlighting one of the treatment options; it’s actually one of the most commonly known one that we see photos and videos of. “Mastectomy” is one of those words that not many people want to hear directed to them by a doctor.

Mastectomy is the process of surgically removing one or both breasts, either partially or completely.

As I’ve stated before, this is not the only treatment option for breast cancer, but I felt like highlighting it for just one main reason. Whatever name you call your own breasts or the names someone (like your partner/s) calls your breasts, ultimately they are yours.

Women understand that as a child these along with your vagina are yours to protect. As a result, you develop a sense of motherly affection toward them. When a girl gets her first period, she is told that she becomes a “woman” and one of the ways to define a woman is by noticing that she has breasts. Whether your breasts are small, medium or largesized, at a very young age you are convinced that this defines you as a woman. I could imagine that some of you who are reading this may know or may have known someone who had a mastectomy. It is devastating to hear that this is your treatment option. Even if this treatment option saves your own life, it would feel like a loss which is why it is so important for breast-cancer survivors to have psychosocial support. Whether you receive counselling from your religious place of worship, family, friends, co-workers, fellow breast-cancer survivors etc, breast cancer “war-

riors” need to feel supported during this period; actually, not just during this period, but throughout the entire process.

People need other people. No matter how hard we try to deny this simple human nature, we all need someone or something that believes in us, that supports us, that loves us.

Another aspect of breast cancer that isn’t as publicised as the ribbons are the high treatment costs. With the activities surrounding breast cancer pulling millions of Guyanese dollars into the cause, do the actual patients and their families receive the money to continue their treatment? The majority of us are unable to answer that question. However, there are

some publicised instances whereby patients have access to essential health services without worrying about their possible financial hardship.

Nevertheless, breast- cancer survivors have to not only deal with having this condition, but also the cost attached to treatment. Depending on the stage of cancer your treatment options will vary. Due to this fact, it’s so important to get screened along with receiving medical advice from your doctor on how many times periodically you should book your appointment.

In closing, I want to say that we can all play a role in this conversation for breast cancer. Wheth-

er you are a survivor, a family member, spouse or child grieving, your pain matters; your happiness matters too. Positively genuine support systems that comprise family members or friends are just one positive coping mechanism that can help you to manage your grief in a positive way. Even though October will be finished soon, let’s continue to take care of our health and the health of those surrounding us.

Hobodeia urged to prioritise Village Improvement Plan THE absence of good governance and accountability has been stymieing development in the village of Hobodeia, Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini). This is according to Ministerial Adviser in the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and Member of Parliament (MP), Mervyn Williams.

Engaging the residents at a community meeting on Saturday, MP Williams sought to address the issue of accountability within the village council. He noted that millions

of dollars have been invested in the community under the Presidential Grant initiative; however, results have not been forthcoming since the village began benefitting from the programme in 2009.

Between 2009 and 2017, the village received funding to establish a beekeeping project and a livestock venture. Further support was provided for ginger and yam projects and other agriculture undertakings.

Driver in ‘hit-and-run’ –– car impounded arrested

A DRIVER, suspected to be behind a fatal hit-and-run accident at #76 Public Road, East Berbice-Corentyne on Saturday afternoon, was, on Sunday morning, arrested at Line Path by ranks attached to the Springlands Police Station.

The suspect was arrested after he took the car, a grey Toyota Premio, with registration number HC 9684, to an auto body workshop late Saturday evening.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that Police ranks have been keeping tabs at several auto body shops following the hit-and-run accident at around 15:30 hrs on Saturday afternoon.

In that incident, 27-year-old Premchand Harripaul of Lot 62 Section A #69 village, East Berbice, Corentyne, was struck down

and flung on the road shoulders next to some bushes. Harripaul was found motionless on his back by passersby. He reportedly had blood coming from his ears, mouth and a wound on his neck.

Eyewitnesses related that they heard an impact but when they came out they did not see anything. It was not until a few moments later that someone passed the area where Harripaul was found lying and raised an alarm; it was then they became aware he was struck down.

The police and relatives subsequently arrived and took the lifeless body to the Skeldon Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

At the scene, police were able to recover pieces of glass from a headlight a short dis-

tance from where the body was and that led them to be on the alert for a vehicle.

The police, keeping a watchful eye on several auto body workshops, were informed that a car with a broken headlight and a shattered front windshield was taken to a known workshop at around 21:30hrs on Saturday evening.

Following checks, the police swooped down early on Sunday morning at the home of the driver and arrested him. He was taken to the Springlands Police Station where he remains in custody assisting with investigations.

New lumber market for Barima Karibo PLANS are in the pipelines to create a market for Barima Karibo lumber production. Residents of the Region One community were made aware of these developments during a visit by Minister within the Ministry of Communities, with responsibility for Housing, Annette Ferguson.

Residents of the small community, which mainly rely on lumber for a livelihood, are experiencing challenges to transport their lumber to other regions where there is a market for the product. Minister Ferguson gave the residents the assurance that the relevant authorities will visit the community. This visit is to conduct an evaluation and provide the necessary steps to be taken to acquire a new market for the lumber.

Minister Ferguson’s visit, on Saturday, was one of many as she and her ministerial colleagues fanned out across the Mabaruma District in Region One. Speaking to the Department of Public Information (DPI), the minister shared that several issues were

raised by the residents which she has committed to seeing addressed.

“Through the visit, I received information that they are in need of a 15-horsepower engine to take the school children to and from school. They currently have an engine, but I was told that it is experiencing some problems,” Ferguson detailed.

She said there were calls for more medical outreaches and promised to forward this information to her colleague, Public Health Minister, Volda Lawrence.

The minister reassured the residents that the government continues to provide the same services for persons in hinterland communities regions, as those who live on the coastland.

“The Coalition Government is bridging that gap… billions have been invested in education and infrastructure in the hinterland and come 2020; there will be much more to ensure every boy, girl, man and woman benefit,” Minister Ferguson stated. (DPI)

Affection, protection and direction DO you have a son or are you the carer of a boy child? If so, when last did you hug that child? Boys need affection just as much as girls. They need undivided attention, praise and encouragement: They also need nurturing, protection and most of all - they need your unconditional love.

Unconditional love means, that the love, attention and security that you give to your child remains the same even if your child disappoints you: upsets you or lets you down. These simple but effective attributes go a long way in building a child’s confidence and sense of well-being: his moral compass and tenacity: His idea of fair play and compassion and his ability to discern right from wrong.

The main reason why young boys, (adolescents) are getting into trouble and they end up committing crimes is due to the lack of morals and guiding principles in their lives. Families are responsible for shaping behaviour and nurturing a child’s personality but if the household is dysfunctional or void of structure, discipline and boundaries, young men will become wayward and end up spending time on the streets and fending for themselves in any way they can.

It is unlikely that children who feel loved, protected and appreciated would take the wrong route and deliberately get involved in crime. Thankfully, most children have parents who understand the importance of providing these key elements (and other components such as encouragement, praise and nurturing) during their formative years and beyond.

But for others, there is no warmth, affection, protection or direction in their households and the obvious notion to choose right over wrong along with other beneficial training and values are never passed down or demonstrated by elders or family members. It is a fact that some children are at a higher risk of becoming offenders, due to the circumstances into which they are born.

Lack of parental supervision, difficult family relationships and having friends and family who commit crime are no doubt precursors to an inevitable future of juvenile delinquency. That is unless an intervention of some sort is brought about promptly.

Through their misguided actions, each year hundreds of young teens find themselves on the wrong side of the law: many are below the age of criminal responsibility (14 years old). If measures are not put in place to prevent them from re-offending, they no doubt will be destined for a life of crime, resulting in incarceration or maybe even worse.

The new Juvenile Justice Act,

which has been effective in Guyana since 2018 has tasked the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) with the increased responsibility of assisting these young offenders who require care, attention and a sense of direction. Rising to the challenge, the CPA launched a 13-week pilot project earlier this year with 7 young male offenders who were taken through various paces by a seasoned, male CPA worker in collaboration with a FaithBased Organisation.

The child development programme falls under a ’Behaviour Modification Programme to Prevent Re-offending’, which follows a series of modules. The aim is to prevent re-offending by exposing the young men to situations that build their life and survival skills and by making them more aware of their place in society.

It became apparent while gathering information from the juveniles that many of their lives so far, have lacked affection, love and stability. In the majority of cases, a positive male role model was nowhere to be found. Activities and provisions that most children take for granted such as family outings, regular meals, and a sense of security and protection: were also missing from their lives.

Boys need to learn valuable attributes (for life) from men they can bond with and whom they respect. A boy will follow or emulate an older ‘no do-gooder’ sibling or family member simply because that person is the symbol of manhood that he has latched on to: boys need male examples to follow, this is a scientific fact.

The two male CPA workers carried out several interactive sessions with the young men who were very forthcoming and responsive to the one-to-one attention. The findings of the programme are yet to be evaluated but any programme devised with the sole purpose of giving young people an insight into their capabilities and potential should be commended.

The CPA has devised and currently runs several programmes for families, adults and children in different regions of Guyana. The programmes aim to educate and empower adults and young people while building their knowledge and self-awareness about the prevention of child abuse.

‘Demon’, Lindener wanted for gold miner’s murder POLICE have issued wanted bulletins for two men who are wanted for the murder of gold miner, Deon Stoll.

The men have been identified as Lennox Estwic, age 23 of Lot 640 South Amelia’s Ward, Linden and Delon ‘Demon’ Morgan called ‘Shane Morgan’ ,age 33.

The wanted bulletins were issued on Sunday; one day after there was an exchange of gunshots between Estwic and ranks of the Guyana Police Force. Police investigators had received intelligence that Estwic was hiding out in Mackenzie, Linden.

Unfortunately though, he was able to evade the police.

Estwic had several brushes with the law and was among the 14 males that were re-

bandit’s home in Sophia to administer treatment. He did not report the matter to the authorities, in accordance with established standard operating procedures.

Wayne St. Hill is the alleged driver of the getaway car used in the robbery in front of El Dorado Trading, the gold dealership located on Da Silva Street.

Police found the getaway car on Wednesday evening abandoned at Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara. There was a bullet hole in the back windscreen of the Toyota 212.

Enquiries revealed that Stoll and his driver had earlier visited a business place on Sheriff Street and did a business transaction where they collected a sum of cash, after which they proceeded in

Stoll, called “Mow”, 44, of Charity, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) and of Barima Avenue, Bel Air, Georgetown died following a shootout with one of the bandits.

Reports indicate that Dr Alonzo De Santos and Wayne St. Hill are in custody.

Dr. De Santos, who is also a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) reservist, allegedly treated the wounded bandit involved in the robbery. The doctor allegedly went to the

As a result, the bandit with the gun shot the driver to his right hand between the elbow and shoulder. The businessman then drew his licensed firearm and he and the bandit with the gun had a shootout.

During the shootout, the businessman received a gunshot injury to the right side pelvis. The bandit, who was also shot, ran away and joined the car with his ac-

complice, and they made good their escape.

Meanwhile, the security guard of El Dorado Trading, 40-year-old Rory Deegs, who was armed with a pistol, opened the gate of the business to see what was going on, when it was alleged that the businessman, in a panic, discharged two rounds into his direction and he received injuries to the right hand.

The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has since called for justice regarding the brutal slaying of Stoll.

Friendship residents sign petition to increase road safety

DAYS after a deadly accident on the East Bank Demerara (EBD) corridor claimed the lives of five persons in the vicinity of Friendship, residents there signed a petition to increase road safety in the area.

The petition, dubbed ‘Never Again,’ was signed by a number of residents on Saturday during a community meeting. A vigil was also held in memory of the five victims. The victims: Policeman Ronel Barker; Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Sergeant, Leon Tucker; Lovern Stoby, a member of the Special Constabulary and Herbert Josiah and his wife, Denise Josiah were killed when a police car slammed into another car on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 5:30hrs.

Barker, who was driving a Guyana Police Force (GPF) car, was proceeding south along the EBD corridor at the time of the accident. He was in the company of Police Lance Corporal Travis Fullington, who is one of two survivors. Tucker, the GDF Sergeant, was headed

Coalition turning Guyana’s fortunes around –– PNCR’s Gary Best says THE ‘A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change’ (APNU+AFC) coalition, in just four years, has worked to transform Guyana’s reputation from a corrupt State to one now trusted and respected by the international community.

This is according to People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Executive Member, (Ret’d) Rear Admiral Gary Best.

the necessary skills for the job market or hope for the future. It was a country that was governed by a policy of dishonesty, deception and division,” Best told reporters at Congress Place.

He stated that after 23 years of “chaos and stagnation under the PPP” more is being done to strengthen governance and transparency while working with international partners so that Guyanese can soon realise the full value of its resources.

Best said that the recent praise by the United Nations with regards to the progress being made

to fight financial crime and corruption demonstrates how far the country has come under President David Granger’s leadership.

The PNCR Executive said that the coalition government will continue to work to attract increased foreign direct investment; strengthen international trade relations and will invest in agro-processing, manufacturing and tourism.

He reminded that, in 2018 alone, the APNU+AFC Coalition government attracted almost US$500M in foreign investment, including oil

and gas, construction, and agro-processing.

“This is more than double the US$225M in foreign investment under PPP in 2014 and almost four times the US$135 million that was invested in Guyana between 2005 and 2009 under the PPP,” he highlighted.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest) has reported that over 220 investment deals were signed by domestic and foreign companies which created some 15,000 jobs.

Added to this, Guyana has worked to strengthen

ties with Mexico to expand trade in agriculture, disaster management, education and the oil and gas industry while Qatar Airways is to begin flights to Guyana and US Airline JetBlue has announced plans to open-up a new flight between New York and Georgetown.

On behalf of the PNCR, Best said that at the next election, with Guyanese to choose between the David Granger-Administration and the Irfaan Ali-led PPP, they will choose the Coalition government which has begun to turn Guyana around for the better.

Guyana to host 2020 Caribbean Mini and Pre Cadet Table Tennis Championships -ITTF Caribbean hopes training and selection Camp will also be held in Guyana

THE Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), in a release yesterday, announced they have received “the stamp of approval,” by the Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation and the Latin American Federation to host the 2020 edition of Caribbean Mini and Pre Cadet Table Tennis Championships and Caribbean Hopes Training and Selection Camp in the summer of 2020.

The Caribbean Mini and Pre- cadet championships form the incubator for Regional table tennis and engage girls and boys between the ages of 11 and 13 years and under in the Caribbean region.

It is a signature competition on the GTTA’s and Caribbean calendar of events, since it forms the basis for regional table tennis supremacy and incubator for the development of young emerging table tennis talents and platform from which all of the region table tennis stars commence their journey.

“The hosting of these games represents a long -term investment in Guyana’s table tennis development, since, as hosts of this tournament, Guyana has the possibility of being able to double the amount of players fielded in competition which would see thirty-two players,” the GTT said.

According to the Godfrey Munroe-led GTTA, the

plan is to use these developmental championships as a basis to develop a nucleus of players who can be selected to represent Guyana in future international competitions and to establish a succession plan at the youth level, this will see focus being placed on the development of players at the primary level (between the ages of (6-13) with a view of establishing a national Hopes programme, thus synchronizing the GTTA programs with ITTF. With junior Olympic cycle games and world junior circuit events being played at the cadet level, it has become of critical importance that Guyana establish a structured feeder system and programme if we are to continue to be successful and become more competitive.

ITTF Caribbean World Hopes Training and Selection Camp Hosting of these games, the GTTA said, will see a focus on the development of players from the primary school realm and a concentration acceleration of the GTTA national table tennis for schools’ programme.

Guyana last hosted the 8th edition of the championships in 2013, where the GTTA fielded and developed a nucleus of 32 players.

ITTF Caribbean Hopes Training and Selection Camp The hopes training camp, which will be held eight days before the championships, will be conducted by an ITTF expert. The event will see the Caribbean’s best 11 years and under boys and girls and their coaches participating in high-intensity training.

The programme, which aims at providing training, nurturing and early exposure to young talents, will be held for eight (8) days.

The programme will be used to select the best two Caribbean 11 years and under boys and girls to participate in the Latin American world hopes training and competition slated for later in 2020.

Training will be done in two three-hour sessions per day, each day commencing at 9:00am and concluding at 6:30pm.

Caribbean Under-13 boys bronze medallist, Colin Wong , along with young talents Jasmine Billingy, Samara Sukhai, Akira Watson, Quenna Torrington, Malachi Moore, Ebo Mc Neil, Dhanesh Persaud, and Alexander De Abreu Neil are players with international experience among other emerging talents that will form Guyana’s squad in preparation for the games.

Tearful Murray wins first singles title since career-saving hip surgery ANDY Murray broke down in tears after winning his first singles title since career-saving hip surgery by beating Stan Wawrinka at the European Open.

The Briton, 32, launched a stunning comeback from a set and a break down to win 3-6 6-4 6-4 in Antwerp to take his first title for more than two years.

Murray had surgery in January and was playing in just his seventh tournament since returning to singles.

He described it as “one of the biggest” wins of his career.

Bermuda suffer crushing 10-wicket loss in opener DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, (CMC) – Bermuda’s hopes of securing a place in next year’s ICC T20 World Cup in Australia received a massive setback when they crashed to 10-wicket defeat in their opening Qualifier Group A match against Papua New Guinea at the ICC Academy here on Saturday.

A Norman Vanua hat-trick stunned Bermuda, who struggled to 89 all out before PNG’s captain Assad Vala led the reply with an unbeaten half-century as the Pacific Islanders galloped home with almost half their overs unused.

Vala’s unbeaten 53 came from 35 balls and included seven fours and a six while Tony Ura finished on 33 not out off 27 deliveries with four boundaries.

Bermuda will look to bounce back when they take on Singapore on Sunday.

Having been put in to bat, Bermuda were immediately on the back foot as Okera Bascome (6) and Janeiro Tucker (4) both fell inside the first two overs.

South African power ends Japan’s fairytale run at Rugby World Cup

By Ossian Shine TOKYO (Reuters) - There was never any shortage of courage, but not even the bravest of blossoms could punch through Springbok brawn on Sunday as South Africa reached the Rugby World Cup semi-finals by beating Japan 26-3 and ending their dream run at their home tournament.

In what was a first World Cup quarter-final for the Japanese, neither an entire nation seemingly now besotted by rugby, nor a raucous 50,000 crowd packed into Tokyo Stadium, could carry the hosts to victory.

“Test match rugby is all about creating opportunities and capitalising, but unfortunately they kept us out and with their set-piece... they played well,” Japan skipper Michael Leitch said. “Credit to them.”

It was always going to be an enormous ask for Japan to replicate what has been their greatest moment on a rugby field — beating South Africa 34-32 in a World Cup group match in Brighton, England, four years ago.

South Africa had been

stunned by that ‘Miracle in Brighton’ but with victories over both Ireland and Scotland this World Cup, Japan no longer held any element of surprise.

“Honestly, it was exactly what we expected,” South Africa’s captain Siya Kolisi said.

“We knew what Leitch and his boys would bring today.

“They came for us in the set-piece and it took a lot out of us to keep fighting. Credit to my boys for keeping going.”

Lines were clearly drawn, with both Japan and South Africa knowing precisely what they had to do to reach next weekend’s semi-final against Wales - this was always going to be a battle between the Boks’ forwards and the Brave Blossoms’ lightning backs.

A dramatic late Ross Moriarty try booked Wales a World Cup semi-final place at the expense of 14-man France as Warren Gatland’s side came from behind to win 20-19 in Oita.

Saturday was the final day of group play and saw Vurlon Mills Academy closing off with a 2-0 win over Eagles Football Club of Stewartville to end with the most points as they also posted the most wins; four out of five matches and was also the lone team not to concede a goal.

Scoring for Mills Academy was Romario La Rose in the 25th minute and Shaquille Dalrymple three minutes later.

Also winning via a similar route was Friendship All Stars (their first win) over Grove Hi Tech, which also failed to turn up. These two walk-overs were the first for the tournament which had kicked off on September 14.

The biggest win of the day was recorded by Diamond United which defeated Fruta Conquerors 6-0.

Rick Ramatar converted the second helmet-trick of the tournament in leading Diamond United to the biggest win of the tournament,which bettered Fruta Conquerors and Agricola Red Triangle’s 4-0 triumphs over Eagles and Friendship All Stars, respectively.

Room should be found for Haynes, says legend Holding

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) – Legendary former West Indies speedster, Michael Holding, has urged Cricket West Indies (CWI) not to discard outstanding former teammate, Desmond Haynes, but to absorb him into the coaching setup of the men’s team.

Haynes, a member of the legendary West Indies sides of the 1970s, 80s and early 90s, missed out on becoming head coach of the regional side this week after CWI appointed his former opening partner, Phil Simmons.

However, Holding contended that Haynes still had a valuable role to play and said both CWI and Simmons needed to utilise his skills in order to enhance the struggling Caribbean side’s development.

“I would hope that a lot of other people that applied for the job that they are qualified in some respect, especially those that made the shortlist,” Holding told the Line & Length cricket podcast.

“So I would hope that they (CWI) wouldn’t just turn their backs and say ‘Phil Simmons is the coach; that’s it – the rest of you can just sit down and wait until some-

thing else comes up’.

“I would hope that Phil Simmons would look at the people who also applied and think to himself ‘ok, I can use some of these people in my setup. Let me try and get these people under my wing and help this West Indies team’.”

He continued: “Because Desmond Haynes certainly has good qualifications as far as being a batting coach is concerned. He has done it overseas … and I think Dessie knows enough about batting and has helped youngsters in the past with their batting, that a place could possibly [be found for him].

“But again that’s up to [Cricket West Indies] and Phil Simmons how they want to go forward.”

Haynes and Simmons were part of a final threeman shortlist, which included Floyd Reifer who served as interim coach once the Ricky Skerritt-led administration dispensed with the services of controversial Englishman Richard Pybus.

For Simmons, it will be his second stint in four years as West Indies coach. His first tenure ended dramatically in September 2016 after 18

months when he was sacked by the former Dave Cameron administration for what was described as “dif­f er­e nces in cul­ture and strate­gic ap­ proach”.

Holding, now a leading television commentator, praised the move to appoint Simmons to the post again, especially considering his previous success.

“I can’t say I was surprised when I heard he had applied for the job again …

I was glad to know he hadn’t turned his back and was still interested,” the Jamaican said.

“Where ever he has been, whether it has been domestic or international, I figured this is the right man for the job.

[I would say] give it back to

him, he did a good job while he was there for such a short period of time – give it back to him and see how things can develop from there and I’m glad that he got appointed.”

Simmons takes over a side which currently languish near the bottom of the ICC rankings in all formats. In fact, they are coming off their worst-ever showing at an ICC World Cup where they won two of 10 matches and finished ninth of 10 teams.

And even with Reifer achieving very little success during his time in charge, Holding said it would be harsh to attribute the Windies failings solely to him.

“It was too short a period to really judge. He had the job for a very short period of time [and] West Indies didn’t have a lot of positive results but at the same time you can’t say that was his fault,” Holding pointed out.

“It’s too difficult to judge someone over such a short period of time. As a coach, you take some time to develop a certain culture you would like inside the team and it would have taken a bit more time for it to really have a stamp on the team.”

Haslington/Grove NDC launches first cricket club in Victoria

THE Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC), Haslington/ Grove, launched its first cricket club in Victoria, yesterday.

The launch was held at the Victoria Community Centre ground, where the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Karen Cummings gave the feature address.

“Whether playing the game of cricket as a recreation or as a career, this game

brings together a diversity of cultures and more importantly it strengthens and builds team spirit and gives you psychical and mental strength and power,” she said to the gathering.

The minister added that cricketers are some of the most cheerful, happy and disciplined sportsmen on earth.

She also noted that youths are important to Guy-

ana and the Government cares and is concerned about the future of the youths, hence it is important for youths to be involved in such clubs.

Minister Cummings also expressed immense pleasure with the launching of the initiative. “We are very happy that we can have this programme today, the launch of this initiative, the Victoria Club of

Cricketers and I want say that on behalf of the Government I’m very pleased to be here.

Mark Dublin, an overseas based Guyanese, who sponsored the cricket club, stated that, the initiative derived from seeing the young men of the community loitering on the streets, playing no part in society, walking the streets and doing nothing.

He added that 50% of the said young men are very talented and someone has to encourage them so that they can exercise their franchise so that they can show the village, the country and the world what they can do.

Christianburg -Wismar ‘Multi’ Secondary retain overall title WHEN the dust was settled on Friday, the Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani District 10 Schools Committee confirmed that defending champions, Christianburg -Wismar ‘Multi’ Secondary School had retained their overall Champion of Champions crown when the Inter Secondary Schools Track and Field, Swimming, Cycling and Teachers’ championships culminated at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.

By virtue of winning two of the titles at this year’s championships, the Teachers’ and Cycling segments, despite losing the war on the track and field to Mackenzie High School, the ‘Multi’ ran out victors of the battle for the overall supremacy.

Some amount of confusion crept in on Thursday night after the Christianburg-Wismar Secondary had lost to Mackenzie High School, many felt, including some officials, that Linden Foundation had carted off the overall title.

But this was not to be and a recount the next day amounted to the fact that the ‘Multi’ team had successfully retained their crown.

The ‘Multi’ side, by winning the teachers and cycling titles and placing third in the track and field and fourth in the swimming, amassed 71 pints.

Placing second was Linden Foundation Secondary who copped one tile and placed second and third in two others to gain 68.5 points and pipped Mackenzie High School who came out with one win-- the track and field-- and got a second and fifth place to accumulate 68.5 points.

The swimming championship was held at the Watooka Pool and there was a most impressive start to the eagerly-awaited track and field championships which saw some spectacular running by the athletes in general which is an indication that the defending National Schools champions, District 10, (Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani) are going to be ready for a successful defence of their title once more.

GFF to facilitate GFA elections on November 2

THE Guyana Football Federation (GFF), in its continuing efforts to bring the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) back to a state of normalcy and based on a correspondence from the GFA Clubs dated 8th October, 2019, in accordance with Article 31 (2) of the Constitution of the (GFA), an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Georgetown Football Association would be convened on Saturday, November 2, from 10:00hrs at the Pegasus Hotel.

Foo, Smith star as Lower Corentyne snap Essequibo’s winning streak

JONATHAN Foo clobbered 86 while pacer Nial Smith grabbed 4 wickets as Lower Corentyne derailed Essequibo’s unbeaten streak, handing them a 2-wicket defeat.

Playing at the Young Warriors ground in Berbice, the defending champions ran into a hostile Smith who followed his 6-for a few games ago at Bourda with another good haul of 4-54 to keep Essequibo to a modest 197-9.

Captain Anthony Adams continued to show his allround class with a defiant 50, Essequibo’s top score with opener Kevon Boodie (34), wicket-keeper Kemol Savory (32) and Quintin Sampson (37) accounting for the bulk of the remaining runs scored.

The fairy-tale run would come to an end for Essequibo who suffered their first defeat in four matches thanks to the fiery spell of Smith who is now among the leading wicket-takers. Man of the Match, Foo, grabbed two wickets before leading the tense run chase.

The former Guyana batsman was again the finisher for his franchise, playing a champion innings which came after his team lost early wickets, putting their chase in chaos before Foo brought calmness to the middle.

Seemed tailor-made for a crisis, the right-hander punished the bowlers as his 86, which came with seven fours and four mighty sixes, required a mere 92 balls.

Spinner Akinie Adams continued his good bowling form with two wickets as the other Essequibo bowlers toiled for the

first time in the tournament.

With two fifties under his belt, Boodie got off to an aggressive start by smashing 34 from 32 with five fours and a towering six before being caught by Lower Corentyne skipper, Veerasammy Permaul.

Out-of-form Parmesh Parsotam (05) had his stumps soon rattled by the left-arm spin of Permaul, who was introduced into the attack.

Permaul then unleashed the fury of Smith who immediately found his groove. The speedster removed another outof-form batsman, David Williams, for a two-ball duck before iron-man Savory resisted.

Savory, Essequibo’s best batsman this season, was forced to play a more gritty innings as his runs came from 85-balls, further exhibiting his ability to dig in if needed.

One of the leading run-scorers of the tournament, the keeper hit a solitary six and a four but was soon removed by a rampaging Smith who had him caught by wicket-keeper Jason Sinclair.

The dangerous Sampson continued to be a menace with the bat, smacking five fours and was backed up by Ronsford Beaton who hit one six and a four in his vital run-a-ball 32.

Things would then go south for the defending champions after the lower-order rescue pair fell, with Smith removing Sampson and Beaton being run out by Junior Sinclair; it proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the Essequibo innings.

…but will not be among the favourites for the next year’s T20 World cup MUMBAI, India, (CMC) – Former West Indies batting maestro Brian Lara believes the Caribbean side remain a feared side in the shortest format but will not be among the favourites for next year’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.

West Indies are reigning T20 world champions following their conquest at the last World Cup in India three years ago but have since endured a run of poor results, leaving them ninth in the ICC rankings only above the likes of Bangladesh and Scotland.

“Whatever tournament the West Indies are going to, they’ll never be favourites at this point in time … even when we won the two tournaments in the past,” the former West Indies captain pointed out.

“What we do have is the shorter version of the game. A lot of young players that are coming into the team, [Shimron] Hetmyer, [Nicholas] Pooran, they are very very good in the T20 version, in the limited-overs version of the game.”

He continued: “The talent is there, and I’ve always said in the past that the West Indies have some of the best talents in the world coming through.

What we do with that talent, how we harness that talent is the most important part.

“I reckon that the next

eight, ten months before the World Cup there will be a lot of planning. You may even see some new faces coming through. If you listen to any other teams in the world or captains, they’re very wary of the West Indies. They never ever take us for granted, which is a good thing.

“So hopefully we will make a good showing coming to the World Cup.” The T20 World Cup is set for October 8 to November 15 and West Indies will hope to make their mark especially after producing a hugely disappointing showing at the 50-overs World Cup earlier this year in England.

In the wake of that debacle, Cricket West Indies have made several changes, among them appointing Kieron Pollard as whiteball captain and announcing former Test batsman Phil Simmons as the new head coach.

Their first assignment will be a three-match one-

Johnson’s breezy ton sets up crushing 141-run win for Georgetown

By Clifton Ross SKIPPER Leon Johnson reminded the masses of his class after his magical century sealed an emphatic 141 run win for Georgetown in yesterday’s match against East Bank.

The Bourda ground was more kind to Georgetown which snapped their 4-match losing streak to pile up a mammoth 292-6 in 50 overs, with the captain stealing the show with a throwback innings of 104 from 111 deliveries, decorated with 9 eye-catching fours.

Coupled with 40 from Yudister Persaud, the visitors could only muster 151-5 when their overs expired as the Georgetown bowlers did well to share the wickets.

During the chase, centurion from the last game, Trevon Griffith, gifted his wicket to good mate Barnwell, but not before smoking three fours and a six in a blistering knock of 20.

Johnson, the 5-time Regional 4-Day title winning skipper, finally made amends for his cold start to the tournament as his half-century kept the East Bank bowlers constantly searching for wickets following the departure of the openers.

The Captain’s 50 arrived with five fours under his belt with Raymond Perez (27) providing ideal support from the other end with his turning over of the strike.

The left-hander motored on and with Perez standing his ground, the two brought up Georgetown’s first 100 partnership of the tournament.

When Perez fell, Johnson continued to find the boundary and when Barnwell came to the crease, it was then that the bowlers felt the brunt.

The right-hander hammered anything loose while Johnson oozed with class to reach his milestone at nearly a run-a-ball.

Sherfane Rutherford then denied the former Windies T20 player the chance to get to 50 when he was caught behind; inevitably bringing an end to the free flow of runs as the innings came to an end.
