President Irfaan Ali had announced the initiative, which also includes the removal of taxes on essential fishing materials such as fuel and seines.

This year, over 6,996 fisherfolk nationwide will benefit from the programme.

by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, who was

accompanied by Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj; Minister within the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Sonia Latchman; Regional Chairman Devin Mohan; Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dhaneshwar Deonarine; Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit and other regional officials.

Addressing the fisherfolk, Minister Mustapha emphasised that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the fishing industry and improving livelihoods in coastal

and riverine communities.

He noted that this builds on previous interventions, including the 2022 distribution of over G$1.1 billion to more than 7,500 fisherfolk, as well as ongoing upgrades to landing and processing facilities, training programmes and the promotion of sustainable, climate-resilient fishing practices.

Minister Mustapha highlighted the government’s focus on regional development, noting improvements in infrastructure, including new concrete roads.

Roraima Airways cuts hinterland airfares across all rehabilitated airstrips

RORAIMA Airways on Friday announced an immediate seven percent reduction in airfares to all recently rehabilitated hinterland airstrips, making it the first airline in Guyana to operationalise cost reductions across every upgraded runway, rather than limiting relief to selected destinations.

According to a press release, this decisive action follows President Irfaan Ali’s national call for the aviation sector to support hinterland communities by reducing the cost of air travel, alongside government-led investments to modernise and rehabilitate hinterland airstrips.

Over recent years, the Government of Guyana has undertaken a major aviation infrastructure programme, including the rehabilitation and modernisation of airstrips across Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine.

There are an additional 11 airstrips scheduled for completion in the near future.

These upgrades, together with the introduction of runway lighting systems and automated weather reporting, represent the most significant single advancement in aviation safety ever undertaken in Guyana.

As an airline that has served Guyana for over 30 years, including the execu-

Minister Mustapha concluded by reiterating that the PPP/C government will continue to support fisherfolk, ensuring the industry remains resilient, reliable, and thriving.

FISHERFOLK SHARE THEIR JOY The excitement among fisherfolk was palpable as many expressed gratitude for the government’s support.

Latchminie Singh, a female boat owner, said, “This grant is a blessing for my business. It will help me repair my boat and buy the materials I need to continue fishing.

We are very happy for this support.”

Johnny Narine, a fisher from the Pomeroon area, echoed those sentiments, stating, “It’s not easy to make ends meet in fishing. This grant will go a long way in helping us sustain our livelihoods. We really appreciate the government thinking of us.”

Dhanpaul Jainarine added, “This is a huge help for all of us. Many fisherfolks [sic] were struggling with costs for fuel and equipment. This money will allow us to focus more on fishing and improving our businesses.”

Other fisherfolk shared stories of how the grant would allow them to invest in better nets, engines, and boats, while some were looking forward to exploring cage-farming opportunities supported by the government.

Many said they felt valued and supported, noting that these initiatives show the government’s commitment to the fishing industry and its people.

WORK on Guyana’s landmark Gas-to-Energy (GTE) Project in Wales is steadily progressing, and it remains firmly on track for completion by the end of 2026.

During a site visit on Friday, Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips received a detailed briefing on the project’s progress.

The Gas-to-Energy Project falls under the purview of the Office of the Prime Minister and continues to benefit from sustained government oversight as it ad-

vances through critical implementation phases.

During his visit, the Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to successfully complete the project. He noted that the initiative is a cornerstone of Guyana’s energy transformation agenda and a critical investment in reliable, affordable, and sustainable power generation.

The Gas-to-Energy facility comprises two integrated components working in tandem: a combined gas

processing and Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) plant, and a power generation plant.

The facility is designed to receive approximately 50 million cubic feet of gas per day from offshore production, which will be converted into electricity and marketable gas products, aimed at maximising the value of Guyana’s natural resources.

The power generation component will utilise four SGT-800 gas turbines operating in a combined-cycle configuration, which will

deliver a total generation capacity of approximately 300 megawatts.

The system has been engineered with built-in redundancy, allowing individual turbines to operate independently and be phased onto the national grid, which will ensure continuous and reliable power supply.

Project officials reported that all four gas turbines have been installed on their respective foundations, which represents a significant step forward in the power gen-

Site preparation and earthworks are also nearing completion, with additional drainage improvements and final grading works in their last stages. This is necessary to ensure optimal site conditions for the intensified construction phase ahead.

Meanwhile, substantial progress has also been recorded in steam generation works. Foundations for all four Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) have been completed, with HRSG modules scheduled to be in place by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

The project has successfully completed extensive preliminary groundwork, including comprehensive soil remediation to ensure longterm structural integrity.

To date, approximately 6,400 of the total planned 9,300 foundation piles have been installed, with foundation works continuing

Employment levels are projected to peak at approximately 1,600 workers by mid-2026 as the project enters its most intensive construction phase.

From isolation to integration THE commissioning of the $920 million Aishalton airstrip in Region Nine is more than the opening of another piece of infrastructure.

It is a statement of intent about the kind of country Guyana wants to be: one in which opportunity is not rationed by distance, terrain or historical neglect, and where hinterland communities are integrated into the national economy as producers, not spectators.

For decades, geography has been one of the quietest but most decisive forces shaping inequality in Guyana. Coastal communities, by accident of history and infrastructure, have enjoyed easier access to markets, services and political attention.

The hinterland, rich in land, culture and potential, has too often been constrained by poor connectivity, high transport costs and limited access to healthcare and education.

In such a context, an airstrip is not merely concrete and steel; it is a bridge between two economic realities.

President Irfaan Ali’s remarks at Aishalton underline that the government is attempting something more ambitious than symbolic projects.

The airstrip forms part of a broader development strategy centred on connectivity, food security and economic diversification.

The commissioning of a similar facility

at Paramakatoi earlier this week, and the announcement that at least 35 more hinterland airstrips are planned, suggest a systematic effort to redraw the country’s internal economic map.

The logic is straightforward. If farmers and producers in Regions Eight and Nine cannot move people and perishable goods quickly and affordably, production will always remain small scale and precarious.

If healthcare access depends on days of travel, then development will always be uneven and fragile.

If tourism potential is locked behind logistical barriers, then communities will never fully benefit from their own natural and cultural assets. Infrastructure, in this sense, is not a luxury; it is the precondition for participation in modern economic life.

The government’s emphasis on food security gives this investment an even wider significance.

In a world marked by supply-chain shocks, climate uncertainty and geopolitical disruptions, the ability to feed oneself is no longer a slogan but a strategic necessity.

The production targets outlined for Regions Eight and Nine—ranging from citrus, peanuts and carrots to beef, mutton and cashew—are ambitious, but they point in the right direction: turning hinterland regions

into integral pillars of national and regional food supply.

Already, tens of thousands of pounds of produce have been transported to Georgetown, with more on the way.

This is a modest beginning, but it demonstrates what becomes possible when production is linked to reliable transport and logistics.

Over time, if these baseline targets are expanded as promised, the country could see real progress in import substitution, lower food-import bills, and stronger rural and hinterland economies.

There is also a social dimension that should not be overlooked. Improved connectivity means better access to healthcare, lower costs of living, and more consistent access to goods and services.

It means families are less isolated, emergencies are less deadly, and young people have more reasons to imagine a future in their own communities rather than only along the coast.

Of course, infrastructure alone does not guarantee development. Airstrips must be properly maintained; production targets must be supported with extension services, financing and market access and local communities must be genuine partners in shaping how these investments are used.

Transparency and accountability in spending will also matter, especially as the scale of planned construction grows.

Still, the direction is hard to dispute. By pairing transport infrastructure with a clear production and food-security agenda, the state is attempting to build an integrated system rather than a collection of isolated projects.

Roads, airstrips, markets and farms are being conceived as parts of one economic chain, not separate political announcements.

The additional plans, for a modern airport in Lethem, a new terminal at Aishalton and supporting roads, reinforce the sense that the hinterland is being repositioned from periphery to partner in national development.

If this strategy is pursued consistently and managed well, the Aishalton airstrip may come to be seen not just as a regional upgrade, but as part of a turning point in how Guyana thinks about its own geography.

Development should not be a coastal privilege.

It should be a national condition. And when a country starts building the links that allow all its regions to contribute and benefit, it takes a real step toward in ensuring that where you live no longer decides how far you can go.

The corruption mantra taken too far

Dear Editor,

WE are living in crucially deceitful times when every acquisition of wealth is suspiciously deemed to be from the proceeds of corruption, illicit drugs trafficking or banditry.

This is so especially in our political environment today when wannabe politicians who lack intelligence cannot persuade people to their point of view, using well-structured arguments to debate socio-economic policies.

These neophyte politicians know that the socio-economic policies of this government cannot be challenged and neither can the myriad of development projects in every sector of the economy be challenged.

Therefore, the easiest way for people to portray the government and the ministers unfavourably is to use the social media to present dramatised and juicy allegations for public consumption. The social media is replete with these ‘social influencers’ who

would stop at nothing to get ‘likes’ and ‘subscriptions.’

Many of these had to pay millions in damages to those whose characters they tried to besmirch. But while this may be accepted from the ‘social influencers’ who severely lacked etiquette and decorum and probably never had an opportunity to visit a school, it is unpardonable for politicians who aspire for the highest office of the land and those who have already been sworn in as members of parliament, to use the social media to peddle unsubstantiated allegations of corruption with fabricated evidence which cannot withstand scrutiny and which have been categorically debunked by evidence provided by the accused ministers.

The APNU and the AFC had tried the corruption mantra against the PPP/C government and had hopelessly failed to such an extent that today, they have lost every semblance of credibility and are trying desperately to

piggyback on the WIN party.

This is good humour, since WIN owes its existence to the decimation of these parties.

But these former supporters of APNU and AFC have a leader, Azruddin Mohamed, who is willing to take the corruption mantra to a new level by posting some buildings and cars, and accuse the owners of corruption.

Some of these are not even owned by the accused persons but he does not care; the negative impression it creates is what matters. For instance, two of the three houses in Florida he claimed that are owned by Minister Susan Rodrigues, in fact belong to her realtor and to Guyana’s Honorary Consul.

The third property was bought through a mortgage. Each and every one of Azruddin’s deceitful and malicious allegations of corruption was discredited by the minister. In fact, the minister has conclusively stated that, ‘I own assets locally and abroad, which have all been declared to the Integrity Commission,

and all of which I can account for.’ And, in fact, she did.

Moreover, Azruddin’s slanderous and defamatory statements against the Minister of Agriculture and his son were proven to be false, deceitful and malicious. This minister is the most hard-working minister, and spares no effort in ensuring that the agricultural sector keeps progressing.

Again, the minister debunked these by issuing a public statement in which he stated that his house at Bloomfield was funded and financed exclusively through a mortgage obtained from Demerara Bank Limited and personal savings accumulated through lawful employment.

“I have lived a life dedicated to serving the people of Guyana, and my career now spans over 35 years.

served as a Member of Parliament for many years, Regional Chairman for Region Six for five years and a minister of the People’s Progressive Party Government from 2020 to date.”

He further added that, ‘I have been up to date with my declarations with the Integrity Commission, and I wish to assure my supporters and the general public that all my assets were acquired through lawful means. I can account for every asset I own.”

Furthermore, the minister made it abundantly clear that his son, a medical doctor and entrepreneur, acquired his assets through lawful means unlike Azruddin, who is faced with several allegations and has even been indicted abroad. It is a shame that Javed Mustapha once treated this man as a ‘friend.’

It would seem that Azruddin Mohamed cannot fathom the reality that people can and do get wealthy in an honest manner ‘from the sweat of their brows’ and not through things such as gold smuggling, drugs trafficking and tax evasion.

There are thousands of huge mansions sprouting all over Guyana and people driving luxury vehicles, and I do think that Azruddin should take out pictures of these and question the sources of income. According to him, no one has the right to get wealthy other than by illegitimate means.

May I remind Azruddin that, The Guyana Integrity Commission promotes integrity and fights corruption by requiring public officials to declare their assets, investigating misconduct, and enforcing a Code of Conduct, aiming to boost transparency, accountability, and public trust in government

through receiving and verifying financial declarations and prosecuting breaches.

The Integrity Commission investigates complaints of corruption, impropriety, and misconduct by public officials and prosecutes individuals who violate the Code of Conduct or fail to file their financial declarations.

Can the accuser of corruption make public his sources of income and how he acquired his massive wealth? He can claim that he worked for 40 years to amass his wealth, but no other person can benefit from such claims.

If he is so sure about the honest acquisition of his wealth, then why not go to the US and clear his name? He has called for the resignations of both Minister Zulfikar and Minister Rodrigues, but he has been indicted on several charges which alleged that between 2017 and 2024 he and his father ‘enriched themselves and defrauded the Government of Guyana by concealing the true quantity and value of gold exported by their company.’

This is estimated at $50 million US. He should be the one to resign since it is just a matter of time before he faces trial in the US. On the other hand, these ministers have duly submitted and disclosed their assets and sources of income to the Integrity Commission.

In conclusion, I leave Azruddin to ponder on Matthew 7:5 “Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s.”

Ellis Riding’s elephantine ridiculosity

A 10th-rate British foot-traveller came to Guyana at the beginning of this year and went about filming in Georgetown.

He filmed parts of Georgetown that suited his rotten mentality. He showed a large garbage dump, an insane fellow in the street where he was filming, and places he was told were too dangerous to visit.

Here is what he posted: “Brutally honest.

Guyana is one of the most Third World places we’ve ever been to. I didn’t expect it because I heard about all the wealth this country has recently accrued [sic] through oil. And I thought it was going to be a lot nicer.”

There are two criticisms that have to be made about the twisted mind of Riding. One is, he may be an agent of an opposition party and that party most probably is WIN. Alternatively, this man may be an unadulterated liar who probably never visited other countries across the world.

Let us expose the deceptions of Riding. I start with my trip to Miami in 2000. I went to look after my eyes at the Bascom-Palmer Eye Institute which was arranged by the Jesuits here in Guyana and in Miami through the instrumentality of Father Andre Morrison.

It was late afternoon, when I came out of surgery and was advised at that time, not to wait for a bus because that spot where I have to catch the bus was lonely and dangerous so to take a taxi.

I was leaving early the morning for Guyana and needed to see the Jesuit priest that arranged for my hospital treatment.

So, I called him to tell him I want to come around. He advised not to come at that time of the night because it was dangerous.

This was in 2000 in Miami in the then richest country in the world. Imagine what it is like now 25 years after. One more thing before we talk about Riding’s choices of places to film. When he took his first vacation after becoming Prime Minister of UK, Mr. Blair chose to be a guest of his friend in Italy. The authorities in Italy got into action right away.

The nearby beach was so dirty that they didn’t want Blair to go there to see the trash.

Riding is a congenital dullard. Any human can take a camera to any country in the world and produce unpleasant surroundings and dangerous areas. The tour guide told my daughter’s touring party to stick together because of the pick-pocket scourge in Rome.

My daughter’s hotel room in Rome did not have hot water.

There aren’t strong words to describe the mental repugnancy of Riding. You can take a video camera on the New York subway and what you see will scare you to death. Did Riding ever ride take the New York subway?

The answer is no and if he says yes, he is lying. New York is not part of the Third World, but when Riding sees what he will see on the subway, he will call New York part of the Third World.

You can take a video camera to dozens of high schools in American inner cities and what you see will cause you to decline a million dollars a month if they employ you at one of those schools. You will not live long to enjoy your million so why take the job? So far, I have not referenced any country in the Global South because I want readers to be familiar with what goes on in the wealthiest countries in the world.

It appears that Mr. Riding has not visited any of the richest countries in the West. That is why I describe him above as a charlatan. He should visit them, then he will see how safe and beautiful is Guyana and the Caribbean.

But Riding has an agenda. Whoever paid Riding told him to go out there and embarrass Guyana by showing unpleasant things in Georgetown that you can find in all the countries in the world, perhaps with the exception of South Korea, North Korea, Singapore and China.

Mr. Riding featured a homeless man in his video and he is heard on the video telling his wife (what she saw in Riding?) that they must leave the street before he attacks them. In the capital city of any country, even South Korea, you will encounter people of unsound mind.

I end this column without mentioning any Third World country because I think I have made my point.

I end on this note. I think a majority of people in the world will disagree with me that the best Jack Lemmon movie is “Avanti,” but it is for me. The sub-plot of that film is that Italy as a country does not function.

Region Two rice farmers welcome $300 per bag paddy subsidy

RICE farmers in Region Two have welcomed the government’s $300 per bag paddy subsidy, describing the initiative as timely and beneficial in easing production costs and stabilising incomes.

The subsidy forms part of a $2.1 billion national assistance programme aimed at strengthening Guyana’s rice industry. The ini-

financial burden on rice farmers and ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector. Under the programme, farmers will receive $300 per bag of paddy to help offset rising production costs and maintain stable earnings.

He noted that the intervention is part of a wider national effort, with an overall investment of approximately $2.1 billion, aimed at sustaining rice production, strengthening food

stands at $990,093,925.

The Agriculture Minister stressed that agriculture remains a vital pillar of Guyana’s development and has seen significant transformation in recent years.

He reminded farmers that the People’s Progressive Party has honoured its commitments since returning to office in 2020, particularly in reviving the rice industry after a period of decline between 2015 and 2020.

Speaking on subsidies for rice farmers in Region Two for the 2024–2025 period, Minister Mustapha stated that farmers in the region are expected to benefit from more than $990 million in support.

This includes fertiliser assistance valued at over $344 million, paddy price support amounting to approximately $349 million, transportation subsidies for ferry services exceeding $40 million, seed paddy assistance, and chemicals for paddy bug control. The total subsidy allocation for Region Two for 2024 and 2025

Minister Mustapha acknowledged that paddy prices are influenced by global market conditions but said the government responded to farmers’ concerns by contributing $300 per bag as price support, an intervention valued at approximately $2 billion nationwide.

He added that farmers continue to benefit from fertiliser subsidies of one bag per acre, improved farm-to-market access, and drainage works. To date, more than $6.1 billion has been invested directly in support of rice farmers.

He further disclosed plans to expand rice cultivation in Region Two, where approximately

he was pleased to participate in the distribution exercise, noting that it reflects the government’s seriousness in fulfilling promises made to the people.

He highlighted ongoing development across the region, including the new ferry service, improved drainage and road infrastructure, the Anna Regina Stadium, expanded street lighting, and the completion of Phase Three road works, all of which have improved

transportation and living standards.

Rice farmer Narine Harry said the subsidy will assist him in meeting production expenses, while Sudesh Singh, a farmer cultivating ten acres, expressed gratitude to the government for the assistance, describing it as timely and meaningful support.

“We are very happy for this intervention and it will come at a good time I am so happy” Singh said.

Nandlall rejects ‘ridiculous’ claims gov’t forced out former Chancellor

ATTORNEY General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, SC, on Thursday, strongly dismissed suggestions that the government orchestrated the removal of retired Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, describing the claims as baseless and insulting to the former head of the judiciary.

Nandlall made the remarks while speaking with reporters at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office in Kingston, Georgetown, after being asked by a reporter to respond to public speculation surrounding Justice Cummings-Edwards’ departure from office.

“That’s ridiculous. I saw that somewhere. Justice Cummings is a qualified, very respected jurist. Do you think Justice Cummings would subject herself to that type of conduct? Why you think she would have someone remove her from the job?” Nandlall said.

The Attorney General’s comments come amid public commentary over

New Hope-like Canal in Region Five to open up 55,000 acres of new lands for farmers –– President Ali announces

PRESIDENT Irfaan Ali has announced that the soon-to-be-constructed New Hope-like Canal, in Region Five, will unlock some 55,000 acres of new agricultural lands for farmers.

Speaking to residents during a land-titling exercise at Rosignol on Friday, the President said the investment will significantly improve drainage across approximately 186,000 acres of existing agricultural lands between Mahaica and Abary.

Of this, about 66,000 acres from Mahaica to Mahaicony and a further 120,000 acres from Mahaicony to Abary will directly

benefit from enhanced drainage and irrigation infrastructure.

Beyond improving existing farmlands, the project will also bring new lands on stream, particularly for small farmers who currently have no access due to the absence of proper drainage and irrigation systems.

President Ali said that the initiative clearly demonstrates the link between public investment and national development, noting that improved infrastructure will expand agricultural production, increase land access, and strengthen livelihoods across the region.

“What this investment

will do is that, first of all, it will bring new drainage and improved drainage… the 186,000 acres of land across the region, agriculture land from Mahaica to Mahaicony area, that is about 66,000 acres of land that would now benefit from this investment, and from Mahaicony to Abary, that is another 120,000 acres of land that will benefit from this investment,” the President said, adding : “Outside of that, with existing land that you have no access to now, because there is no drainage and irrigation, and new land that will come on stream to go to small farmers.”

GuySuCo records significant progress in production, mechanisation

–– confident ongoing reforms would lead to improved outcomes in the medium term despite missing target in 2025 THE Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has acknowledged that it did not meet its revised sugar production target for 2025, but emphasised that the year nonetheless marked significant progress compared to the previous year.

In a statement responding to a Stabroek News article published on January 9, 2025, “GuySuCo fails to attain lowered production goal for 2025,” the corporation reported a 26.5 per cent increase in overall sugar production compared with 2024.

GuySuCo said that while the achievement fell short of expectations, the increase reflected “incremental progress despite several challenges.”

According to the corporation, prolonged and excessive rainfall during 2025 severely disrupted harvesting schedules and reduced cane qual-

ity across multiple estates. At the same time, persistent labour shortages continued to limit field operations.

To m i t i g a t e t h e s e problems, GuySuCo said it expanded the use of mechanical harvesting and achieved the highest level of mechanisation in its history.

The company described this shift as a “necessary structural adjustment” to address the continuing scarcity of field labour and noted that corresponding field conversion works, including upgrades to access roads, drainage, and field layout, are underway to support greater efficiency.

GuySuCo also highlighted improvements in cane yields, reporting an increase from 41 tonnes per hectare in 2023 to 53 tonnes per hectare in 2025, representing a 29 per cent gain.

These results, the corporation said, strengthen

the foundation for future recovery even if shortterm targets remain unmet.

“The corporation’s recovery cannot be assessed on the basis of a single crop or production figure,” GuySuCo said, adding that its focus remains on long-term viability through “steady, practical improvements” such as factory upgrades, enhanced maintenance systems, and strengthened management practices.

As preparations begin for the upcoming crop, the company said lessons learned in 2025 are already being incorporated into new operational strategies.

GuySuCo also expressed optimism that ongoing reforms would lead to improved outcomes in the medium term and thanked workers and technical teams for their commitment under difficult conditions.

Azruddin Mohamed charged with multiple traffic offences, granted $65,000 bail AZRUDDIN Mohamed, a 38-year-old businessman of Lot 19 Public Road, Houston, East Bank Demerara, appeared before the Whim Magistrate’s Court on Friday, January 9, 2026, where he was charged with multiple traffic-related offences.

Mohamed, who is the son of embattled businessman Nazar “Shell” Mohamed and has previously been the subject of public attention in relation to other legal controversies involving his family, was charged in relation to a vehicle he was operating on November 14, 2025.

According to the charges laid, Mohamed was accused of driving a motor vehicle with prohibited tinted glass, an obscured identification mark, an unlicensed motor vehicle and an uninsured motor vehicle.

Court records indicate that the matter had been called on several previous occasions. As a result of Mohamed’s non-appearance, Magistrate T. Hardy had ordered that a summons be issued for him to appear in court on January 9, 2026.

Several motorists fined, jailed and granted bail over traffic offences

SEVERAL motorists were fined, granted bail, had their licences suspended, or faced possible imprisonment after appearing in court this week for dangerous driving offences detected by traffic cameras, as the Guyana Police Force continues enforcement under the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS).

The cases were heard on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court #2 before Her Worship Ms. Abigail Gibbs and at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court #7 before Her Wor-

ship Ms. S. Lallram.

The charges arose from traffic breaches, including speeding and third-lane violations, captured by the SRIS camera system, which is operated by the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) in partnership with the Guyana Police Force.

Before Magistrate Gibbs, Junior McKenzie, driver of minibus BAF 6744, and Orin Harper, driver of minibus BPP 3825, were each charged with two counts of dangerous driving and fined $100,000.

Prosecution requests earlier hearing date in Mohameds extradition case

A LETTER from Glenn Hanoman, one of the attorneys for the pros‑ ecution, has prompted renewed discussion over the scheduling of the extradition proceedings against United States‑in‑ dicted businessmen Nazar Mohamed and his son, Azruddin Mo‑ hamed.

In his correspondence dated January 8 to Clerk of Court Destiny Wood‑ man, Hanoman requested that the court consider rescheduling the contin‑ uation of the committal hearing to an earlier date than the currently set Feb‑ ruary 5 and 6.

The letter, sent on be‑ half of lead prosecutor Jamaican King’s Counsel Terrence Williams and his team, noted that the prosecution had resched‑ uled their diaries and were available to appear before January 20, on January 20, or during the week of

“For the avoidance of doubt, all counsel for the requested individuals would remain amenable to an adjournment to dates after February 5 and 6, should that course prove more convenient to our learned friends represent‑ ing the requesting state,” the defence letter stated.

Magistrate Latchman will decide the next steps in the case.

The magistrate had originally suggested Jan‑ uary 20 for the continu‑ ation of the proceedings,

The late disclosure of the minister’s statement prompted the court to halt further witness tes‑ timony and adjourn the case to February 5 and 6.

The statement, relating to Section 6 of the Fugitive Offenders (Amendment) Act, is intended to tender a certificate confirming the existence of an extradi‑ tion arrangement, without requiring the minister to testify in court.

The prosecution, led

by Williams KC and sup‑

Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde ported by Jamaican attor‑ neys Herbert McKenzie and Celine Deidrick, ar‑ gued that the disclosure was made out of caution and that the law allows for additional documents if necessary. Defence coun‑ sel objected, with Forde requesting that no further disclosures be permitted.

Magistrate Latchman ultimately sided with the defence on this point.

The extradition case stems from a U.S. request accusing the Mohameds of operating an international criminal network alleged‑ ly involved in gold smug‑ gling, money laundering, and tax evasion.

They face 11 criminal counts in the U.S. South‑ ern District of Florida.

The pair, owners of Mohamed’s Enterprise, remain on $150,000 bail each, have surrendered their passports, and are required to report week‑ ly to the Ruimveldt Po‑ lice Station.

Gold miner remanded to prison over attempted murder charge

A 32-year-old gold miner, Ken McPherson, also known as “Gods,” of Lot 53 Litchfield Village, West Coast Berbice, has been remanded to prison after being charged in connection with a shooting incident in the Mid-

dle Mazaruni.

McPherson is accused of attempting to commit murder following an incident that occurred on August 18, 2025, at 14 Miles Issano Landing, Middle Mazaruni River. Police allege that he shot Shamar

Adrian during the incident.

He was arrested on the day of the alleged offence and subsequently charged.

On Friday, January 9, 2026, at about 10:00 hours, McPherson appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate

Teriq Mohamed, where the charge was read to him. As the offence is indictable, he was not required to enter a plea.

The court ordered that McPherson be remanded to prison, and the matter was adjourned to February

24, 2026.

Attempted murder is a serious criminal offence under the law and is dealt with in the High Court following the completion of preliminary proceedings in the Magistrate’s Court.

Key revamp for Guyana Cup 2026 HORSE racing in Guyana continues its rapid evolution, and the 2026 Guyana Cup season is set to mark another major milestone with the introduction of a structured, multistage nomination system, a format modelled on international racing standards and designed to elevate the sport, locally.

The Guyana Cup Committee, in collaboration with the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee (JJTRC), has officially confirmed a four-race nomination series for the Guyana Cup (Mile), Guyana Cup Sprint and GuyanaBred Derby, signalling a shift towards greater professionalism, transparency and competitiveness.

Over the last five years, horse racing in Guyana has seen unprecedented growth.

Attendance has surged, prize purses have increased, new stables have emerged, and international interest particularly from the Caribbean, South America, and North America has grown steadily.

With this expansion comes a responsibility to raise standards.

“In major racing jurisdictions overseas, entry into elite races is never automatic,” a committee member explained.

“Horses must qualify, prove form, and commit early. That is the direction Guyana racing has been pushing toward for years.”

The new nomination system ensures that only the best-prepared and most competitive horses earn a place in Guyana’s most prestigious races.

FOUR NOMINATION DAYS, ONE CHAMPIONSHIP GOAL For 2026, horses seeking entry into the Guyana Cup, Sprint or Guyana-Bred Derby must qualify through one of four official nomination races: • February 1- Port Mourant Turf Club • April 5- Port Mourant Turf Club • May 3- Bush Lot United Turf Club

• July 5- Port Mourant Turf Club (Final Nomination Day)

Each nomination day will feature Sprint, Mile and Derby races, allowing horses multiple opportunities to earn qualification.

However, only the first and second-place finishers on each nomination day will qualify for the final race in that category.

This means that across four nomination days, a maximum of eight horses can qualify per race through performance, ensuring quality control, while maintaining excitement throughout the season.

If a horse runs in the Guyana Cup Mile nomination race on February 1 and finishes first or second, it automatically qualifies for the Guyana Cup final.

If that same horse later runs again on April 5 and finishes first or second, the qualification does not duplicate. Instead, the nomination passes to the next eligible finisher, ensuring that opportunities remain open for other competitors. This approach prevents domination by a single stable and encourages broader participation.

On February 1 and April 5, promoteradded bonuses apply:

ensuring that even horses narrowly missing qualification are rewarded.

On later nomination days, a percentage of nomination fees is redistributed as bonuses, with the remaining funds added directly to Guyana Cup Day purses, strengthening the final events.

MAJOR INCENTIVES: FREE ENTRY AND DISCOUNTS To encourage early commitment, the system rewards strong performances early in the season: Winners on February 1 and April 5 receive 100% FREE entry into the corresponding final race.

Second-place finishers receive 40% (Feb 1) and 20% (Apr 5) discounts.

On May 3, the top three finishers will receive a 15% discount. On July 5, the top three will receive a 10% discount.

If a horse wins free entry more than once, the benefit passes to the next eligible finisher, thereby ensuring fairness.

SECURITY ADVANCE ADDS ACCOUNTABILITY Upon qualification, G$100,000 is retained as a security advance towards the final entry fee. This measure, common in overseas racing, ensures that only serious and committed runners occupy limited gate positions.

Refunds are granted only with a JJTRCrecognised veterinary certificate.

Trainer and Jockey bonuses encourage excellence Recognising that success is a team effort, the 2026 system includes:

• Guyana Cup (Mile): G$500,000 • Sprint: G$300,000 • Derby: G$200,000

• G $500,000 bonus to any trainer qualifying two horses in one race category • G $500,000 bonus to any jockey qualifying two horses in one race category

Bonuses are distributed 60% to the winner, 20% to second and 20% to third,

These incentives promote professional riding, careful placement, and stable development.

IMPORTED HORSES: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY Four gate positions are reserved in the Guyana Cup and Sprint for imported horses, but entry is not automatic.

First preference goes to imports with the highest earnings in 2026, subject to a 1% additional entry fee.

If slots remain, highest-class horses imported before July 5 may be considered, subject to a 2% additional fee.

All imports must submit full pastperformance records and are approved solely at the discretion of the JJTRC. RAISING THE BAR FOR GUYANA RACING Industry stakeholders agree that this nomination system represents a turning point.

“Guyana racing has grown tremendously in five years; bigger crowds, better horses, larger purses,” one official noted.

“To continue that growth, we must operate like international racing jurisdictions. This system does exactly that.”

By introducing performance-based qualification, structured incentives, and clear governance, the Guyana Cup Committee believes the sport will attract stronger local stables, higher-quality imports, and greater international attention.

The 2026 Guyana Cup season is shaping up to be the most competitive and professionally run in the country’s history.

For horsemen, the message is clear: Prepare early. Perform consistently. Earn your place.

For fans, the result will be deeper fields, better racing, and a championship season worthy of Guyana’s growing reputation on the regional racing stage.

‘No love lost’ boxing card shifted to Feb 14th ...Tourism Ministry fully endorses bout THE organisers of the ‘No love lost’ boxing showcase have shifted the fight night to February 14 at the Pegasus Hotel and Suites.

The boxing card organised by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control in partnership with Nexgen Global Promotions confirmed the change in date at a press conference on Friday at the Pegasus.

They also announced a partnership with Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce. The event was originally scheduled for February 15th.

Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Kamrul Baksh who represented the Ministry said this is yet another venture as the country seek to further grow the sports tourism landscape.

“We are happy to be support the global events across the spectrum, this boxing bout here certainly will add a lot of depth and value,

as you know, Guyana has been successful at hosting major global events previously and I think we are going to succeed with this major bout with Dharry, I want to call on the Guyanese public to rally around our champion.”

He said the country has shown its ability when it comes to hosting cricket, horse racing, boxing setting the bar for sporting events in the region.

“We want to continue to support the development of these sports, boxing of course is crucial, you heard from Peter how successful we have been here in the past and we believe that this event which is absolutely global is going to expand the exposure for destination Guyana and that is why we came and support this, because we believe it tapped into a regional and global audience that is what we want here for Guyana,” Baksh added.

Baksh shared that the body is working

to unveil the entire slate of events set to be hosted this year including major sport events.

Guyana Boxing Board of Control representative Vikash Panday says all should recognise that this is special moment for boxing in Guyana.

The upcoming bout will see Guyana’s Elton Dharry seeking to claim his first world title when he goes face to face with Tanzanian Salmin Kassim for the IBO Super Bantamweight World Title.

Dharry has a record of 26 wins including 15 knock-out along with 6 Losses and 1 Draw. Dharry has won the WBA Fedecentro Super Flyweight Champion; WBA Gold Super Flyweight Champion; IBF Inter-Continental Bantamweight Champion and is the Guyana National Champion.

The overseas based fighter will have his biggest challenge, going up against a 22 years old fighter in a catchweight.

The bout will be Bantamweight contest which means it is a 7 pound weight disadvantage for Dharry, who has to move up two weight divisions to challenge for the title.

Dehring outlines plans for women’s cricket

...Windies ladies return to the Test arena in March for the first time since 2006

WITH the Women’s T20 Blaze and Super50 set to commence in St Vincent on January 13, Cricket West Indies (CWI) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chris Dehring spoke about the developmental plans for female cricket in the region.

Speaking last Tuesday on the ‘Sean Devers Sports Watch’ on Kaieteur Radio, Dehring identified the plans in place for preparations for West Indies Women's return to Test cricket in March for the first time since 2006, when Stephanie Power led the side against Pakistan.

The West Indies Women are scheduled to face Australia in March before travelling to South Africa in April, as the regional team makes a return to red-ball cricket for the first time in 20 years. None of the present players has played international red-ball cricket.

According to Dehring, all systems are in place in St Vincent for a successful tournament featuring the host Windward Islands, Leeward Islands, Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The tournament has been reduced from five to three rounds due to financial reasons, with each round in the T20 Blaze being played at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in Kingston. The first match will be played in the morning, the second from 2 pm, while the third will be played under lights.

The 50-over format will be contested from January 27-31, with matches scheduled for the Park Hill Playing Field in Colonarie, the Cumberland Playing Field in Cumberland and the Sion Hill Playing Field in Sion Hill.

“The U-19 World Cup, in Namibia and Zimbabwe, will be played at the same time as the Women’s CG United Super50.

West Indies heads to the UAE, where they face Afghanistan in a 3-match T20 series (Jan 19-22), before a similar series in South Africa (Jan 27-31).

West Indies will play six T20Is before the ICC T20 World Cup bowls off on February 7.

So there is a lot of cricket during the first two months of this year,” informed Dehring.

Speaking on the women’s return to Test, Dehring said the fact that none of the players have played red-ball cricket is not the ideal situation.

“These are some very talented ladies… they are also very experienced…so we are hoping that they can translate that white-ball experience to the red-ball.

They have been involved in numerous training camps here in Antigua at the High-Performance Centre. We had some good seasons as the Academy Males played with the ladies to get them accustomed to quicker bowling and different types of bowlers.

It's been quite an interesting experiment to try to accommodate and translate what they know in white-ball cricket to the red-ball format as part of their preparation.

I think they are looking forward to testing themselves. So you can’t want for a better attitude from these ladies. They are dying

to show what they can do at the Test level,” continued the eighth CEO of the CWI. It was agreed that a lot more has to be done for the development of women’s cricket by the regional boards.

It was noted that the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) organised a women’s inter-county and, for the first time, included a hinterland team. A player from that team was selected for the Guyana team.

On the question of how possible it is for CWI install a subcommittee on women’s cricket in every territory.

“I want to address that from a more holistic perspective. One of the challenges with the Leeward and the Windward Islands is that they are comprised of several Islands and don’t get exposed…Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago don’t have this excuse,” explained Dehring.

“As Individual countries, your cricket infrastructure in terms of how you are developing your ladies and men’s teams don’t necessarily get exposed and doesn’t get the National fervor or national exposure. The people are not concerned or raising issues and challenging the local associations and governments to rally behind a cause.

I don’t think people appreciate what is taking place in this Hemisphere as it relates to individual countries participating in tournaments like the Bolivia Games, which we participated in Peru.

We are going to have the Pan Am Games very shortly, and later this year, we will most likely have the Pan Am qualifiers in the Caribbean, where individual countries will have to participate to qualify,” disclosed Dehring.

Dehring explained that “Countries with Olympic affiliation can participate (both male and female). Countries like St. Vincent will have to compete with St. Lucia, while Barbados clashes with St Kitts to qualify for the Pan Am Games. And that is only the precursor for the bigger one …the Olympics.

RHTYSC congratulates five members on selection to Guyana senior women’s team THE Management and members of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports club, has congratulated its members for gaining selection on the national senior female team.

The players will be leaving Guyana shortly for the Cricket West Indies T20 and 50 overs tournaments.

The club is very proud of the fact that the Rose Hall Town Metro Female team which was formed in 2008 has produced over a quarter of the Guyana Cricket team.

Shemaine Campbell, the first Guyanese to captain a West Indies female team and also win a senior regional title, will lead the team.

The other RHTYSC members in the Guyana team are Shabika Gajnabi, She-

neeta Grimmond, Plaffina Millington and Danellie Manns.

Campbelle, Gajnabi and Grimmond have all played at the Highest level for the West Indies while Millington is a veteran at the regional level with lots of experience over the last decade.

She was recently named the CWI T/20 player of the year while Manns has represented the West Indies at the Under 19 level.

The Rose Hall Town Metro team since 2008 has produced over thirty players for Guyana at the Under 19 and senior levels with four of them going to play for the senior West Indies team and two at the Under 19 level.

Overall, the club which has won the Guyana Cricket Board club of the year award

five times has produced 131 players for Berbice and Guyana with fourteen playing for the West Indies and the United States at different level.

The Rose Hall Town Metro team had twelve players representing the Ancient County at the inter-county level in 2025 while four club members were in the national Under 19 team.

“As a club, we intend to continue investing in our female cricketers. We would be working along with the Berbice Cricket Board, the Rose Hall Canje Cricket Club and West Berbice Cricket Association in 2026 to make sure that our female cricketers are actively in games.

“We also intend to get more females involved in coaching programmes during the year,” a statement read.

The prestige of winning the regional tournament is not as great as, for instance, that of yesteryear when winning the Shell Shield was a major event. I guess, because of the growth of international cricket nowadays and the West Indies being our international team, this is not so.

When Individual countries participate in and win regional tournaments, you don’t necessarily get the national support and outpouring, the political ambition, and so on.

Jamaica winning the Shell Caribbean Cup is nothing compared to Jamaica or Trinidad reaching the FIFA World Cup. When individual countries have the opportunity to showcase their talent on the world stage, we are hoping that this will help their developmental drive and expose those countries. We know Caribbean pride and the other countries will be motivated to do the same.

You must have a shiny star… a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, not only for the Associations, but for the players who would want to travel the world and be excited to be in somewhere new.

In Peru, Jamaica won the ladies and Barbados won the Men’s. But it was more than that; it was exposure to a whole new world, seeing South America as a new world to conquer as a cricketing nation. That is going help in the coming years.

So don’t think of it in today’s realm but think of it in the next 10, 15, 20 years.

If you have a regular cadence of qualification for South American, Pan Am and Olympic Games, and that should inspire Nations, Government and Cricketers to want to be a part of this,” posited the Jamaican who founded Sports Max. Dehring said he has had fruitful talks with Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali, Sports Minister Charles Ramson and Minister in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs.

Director of Sport pays tribute to late FIFA Referee Maurees Skeete FIFA referee Maurees Skeete

AS Guyana’s sporting fraternity continues to mourn the passing of former national athlete and FIFA referee Maurees Skeete, Director of Sport at the National Sports Commission (NSC), Steve Ninvalle, on behalf of the NSC and the Government of Guyana, extended heartfelt condolences and highlighted her immense contribution to sport.

Skeete passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy defined by excellence, discipline, and service to country.

In expressing his condolences, Ninvalle described Skeete as one of Guyana’s most outstanding sports officials and all-round athletes, noting that her impact was felt across multiple sporting disciplines.

“Maurees Skeete was a name that consistently stood out in our sporting landscape,” Ninvalle said.

“Her work as a referee earned her nominations on several occasions in the Sports Official category at the National Sports Awards, which speaks volumes about the respect she commanded and the standard she maintained throughout her career.”

Ninvalle emphasised that while Skeete possessed remarkable versatility as an athlete, it was in football officiating that she truly reached the pinnacle of her talent.

“She was an all-round sportsperson of the highest quality, but her excellence as a football referee took her to the very top. Achieving FIFA accreditation and earning regional recognition placed her among the best to ever represent Guyana in that capacity,” he added.

A proud member of the Guyana Defence Force, Skeete served as a Warrant Officer Class Two, seamlessly carrying the values of discipline, integrity, and commitment from military life onto the sporting field.

Just last October, the GDF publicly recognised and honoured her bravery in her fight against breast cancer.

Skeete became a FIFA-accredited international referee in 2014, remaining on the FIFA list for several years.

She also captured multiple Guyana Football Federation Referee of the Year awards, underlining her dominance and consistency at the local level.

Regionally, her quality did not go unnoticed. In 2015, she was nominated for the

CONCACAF Female Referee of the Year Award, becoming the only female official from the Caribbean to receive that nomination in that year.

Her officiating portfolio included major CFU and CONCACAF women’s tournaments, as well as high-profile local men’s competitions such as the Kashif and Shanghai tournament and the Elite League.

Committed to development, Skeete actively participated in initiatives such as the FIFA Referees Assistance Programme (RAP), always seeking to improve herself while contributing to the advancement of officiating standards in Guyana.

Before her rise in refereeing, Skeete had already established herself as a gifted athlete.

She represented Guyana as a national rugby player, earning selection to the women’s sevens squad in 2010 to defend their RAN Championship title, and also featured in national basketball tryouts, showcasing her exceptional all-round sporting ability.

Ninvalle noted that Skeete’s journey will continue to inspire future generations, particularly young women aspiring to excel in sport, both on and off the field.

More time should be given to Sammy – CWI VP

CMC – In a bid to calm rising public discontent, Cricket West Indies Vice President Azim Bassarath has issued a clear call for patience, stating the board believes “more time should be given to the Darren Sammy project.”

Speaking frankly on the i95.5FM Isports programme with host Andre Errol Baptiste, Bassarath acknowledged the troubled climate surrounding the men’s team’s direction, but urged the region to support the current leadership.

His comments come amid growing de-

bate over the team’s inconsistent performances under the all-format head coach.

“The directors believe that more time should be given, so the region needs to understand that,” Bassarath stated.

He confirmed that Sammy’s tenure will be formally assessed, likely around the time of CWI’s Annual General Meeting.

“Maybe a discussion paper can be circulated, and the directors can have a look at it,” he noted, framing it as a deliberate process.

“It is something that we must give time to see if it can work.”

Addressing the key question of a fair timeline, the Vice President suggested the upcoming T20 World Cup next month will be a critical benchmark, alongside recent series results.

“Whether one year is a sufficient time is still to be debated. We look at his results where there are a few series and maybe the World Cup, and we can really have a look at his tenure at that time.”

Striking a conciliatory tone, Bassarath directly appealed to fans and critics alike to temper immediate judgment. “We shouldn’t

rush into things. We shouldn’t be criticising too much,” he implored. “Let us lend our support to the guy and encourage the players and the coaches and so on, and see if we can turn the so-called corner again.”

He concluded by recognising the emotional weight of the issue, admitting, “I know that it is a troubling topic.”

The statement represents the board’s most direct effort yet to manage expectations, signalling that while a review is inevitable, a decision on Sammy’s future will not be rushed.
