The IDB hosted the forum as part of efforts to open up new investment and trade opportunities in the region, with a particular emphasis on growth in nearshoring.

The forum brought together nearly all of the region’s trade ministers, as well as heads and executives of global companies.

According to the IDB statistics, Guyana could stand to benefit from over US$23M in nearshoring from the US and over US$370 million in nearshoring from other LAC countries.

In Guyana, the government has already signalled its strong commitment to laying down necessary infrastructure to support the growth of the country’s outsourcing capabilities, particularly in the area of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), which primarily involves call centres that do outsourcing work.

Over the past two years, the country has seen massive growth in the BPO sector, particularly through expansion in the telecommunications sector, which the government liberalised upon assuming office in 2020.

According to ClaverCarone, the time is ripe for

the LAC countries to capitalise on the opportunities presented due to the deficiencies highlighted during the historic supply chain disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequently the Russia/ Ukraine war.

As countries look to find alternative solutions to existing systems, Claver-Carone believes that the place that they could find those solutions is in the LAC region, describing the region as a sea of peace and prosperity among the fluctuations.

OPPORTUNITIES “I could not be more excited for the opportunities that exist today in Latin America and the Caribbean.

We have before us a oncein-a-generation opening for global trade insertion and nearshoring, and the moment to seize that is now. If we lose it we’re not going to see it again in any of our lifetimes. The stars have never been more aligned for Latin America and the Caribbean,” Claver-Carone expressed.

ing job investment and opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean first and foremost.”

Claver-Carone noted that the IDB is positioning itself to support growth in this and other trade sectors that are ripe for the picking, as businesses are positioned to see the LAC region as an attractive destination for the global delivery operation.

“We must properly acknowledge the region’s long-standing potential and have the vision to recognise the ripening possibilities; an increasing number of companies have already done so,” The IDB head said that is responding to calls from the region for more to be done on trade, commerce and nearshoring.

He added: “We hear you were working on it. We’re excited about the historic reforms that were provided by our Board of Governors this year. “Some of you may be shocked to learn that for the first time investment indicators are going down for China at the same time as they’re going up for Latin America and the Caribbean,” he noted.

For medium and longterm growth, however, the region needs more public and private co-operation and a clear focus on the issues surrounding trade.

According to Claver-Carone, the IDB will be investing in identifying hundreds of products and businesses across industries that can readily benefit from nearshoring possibilities in the 26 countries of LAC.

Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Guyana regarding the Guyana-Venezuela case before the ICJ TAKUBA Lodge (June 8, 2022) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has received a letter from the Registrar of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), advising that the Government of Venezuela has submitted a Preliminary Objections to the admissibility of the case before the Court regarding the Arbitral award of 3 October, 1899 (Guyana v.

Venezuela).

The Ministry recognises that the Rules of Procedure of the ICJ allow for such an objection to be lodged and considered by the Court, and that, as a consequence,

the proceedings on the merits of the case are suspended until the Court rules on the Preliminary Objections. The Guyana Government will submit its observations, with dispatch, as soon as the Court advises of the time by which it expects to receive them.

The Ministry emphasises that, at all times, Guyana has steadfastly adhered to the rule of international law, and the rules and procedures of the ICJ, with regard to this matter, and we will continue to do so.

Observing that Venezuela had previously not recognised the jurisdiction of the Court to con-

sider the case, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation also notes that, by submitting an objection at this advanced stage of the proceedings before the ICJ, the Venezuelan Government is patently engaging in an effort to delay the Court’s final judgement on the merits of the case.

Nonetheless, by its action, the Venezuelan government now joins the judicial process which Guyana had always urged it to do, a step that Guyana welcomes, confident of the validity of its position on the merits of the case.

‘We almost shut down operations, and then Guyana struck oil’ – a local content success story

By Shari Simon SINCE opening its doors ten years ago as one of the first logistics service providers in the country, the Guyana Logistics and Support Services Inc. (GLASS) has transformed to become a household name while delivering a myriad of services to the country’s burgeoning oil and gas industry.

In an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle, Low-A-Chee explained that just before founding his own company he worked for a local oil company that was drilling a well.

His job then was customs brokerage, as well as supporting the company’s workers with acquiring visas, work permits, and housing accommodation.

By working in the industry

and building specific expertise, Low-A-Chee said he started to recognise a growing demand for the services that he knew could ultimately transform sectors across Guyana.

Upon realising how crucial those services were to the oil and gas industry, Low-A-Chee, together with support from his team member, Charissa Cheong, launched the company that officially became incorporated in December 2011.

“Initially, GLASS was the first services company in Guyana focusing primarily on the oil and gas sector, and also foreign or expat companies that were operating in that space,” he shared.

It wasn’t until the year 2015 when ExxonMobil discovered oil off Guyana’s shores that the company began to experience a tremendous turnaround in its business operations after suffering the effects of a slowdown in offshore activities.

“We were at a point where we thought we would have to shut down because there wasn’t anything for us to do,” Low-A-Chee said before adding that, “we did some really good management in terms of our finances and resources, and we survived. And Exxon found oil.”

As the oil and gas industry’s growth started to catapult

with additional exploration and discoveries, Low-A-Chee and the GLASS team began tailoring the company’s services to fit niche areas within the industry.

Today, the company’s clients include operators of the oil blocks and Tier 1 contractors in Guyana. Warehousing and laydown space, manpower and recruitment, supply chain management and procurement, construction, and relocation are some services offered by the company.

“We are also focused on our approach and we have a group of in-house departments that handle various aspects of the business,” said Low-AChee.

For the company’s warehousing and laydown space service, GLASS provides inventory management of materials that have to be transported offshore.

The GLASS Managing Director explained that these materials pass through the company’s warehouse and inventory system where checks are made to ensure there are no damages before transport to the rig or Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit.

‘Finance boost for businesses, families with schoolchildren’

By Naomi Parris THE rising cost of living has had severe effects on many households across Guyana.

Those effects, however, have especially been felt by persons living in hinterland and riverine communities as those communities are disproportionately affected by economic hardships and lack of resources, due to their remoteness.

President, Dr Irfaan Ali recently announced a $25,000 cash grant for hinterland communities. Some potential beneficiaries have lauded the government’s initiative to cushion the effects of the recent rise in prices of commodities, heightened by the ongoing war in eastern Europe and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pretty Debideen, a Medex at Fort Island, Region 3 (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), told the Guyana Chronicle that the cash grant will be of great benefit to the residents of Fort Island and many other riverine communities.

“It [cash grant] would be very beneficial because income is low on Fort Island. Then, we have [a] majority [of people] who are single parents on Fort Island. So, I know that the $25,000 would benefit the island persons.”

Debideen explained that many residents of hinterland and riverine communities do

not have a fixed income, as such they have been feeling the brunt of the recent economic hardships.

“They would use it to purchase food and whatever they need. The cost of living is high right now and [there is] not much source of income on the island…

[The cash grant] would benefit the residents with finances for children to go to school and buy ration to be in the house,” she explained further adding -“And I can tell you from working in the catchment areas and other riverine communities and in most areas there; in Caria Caria and Lanaballi… persons in these areas find it difficult.

“They do labour work and they work sometimes $2500 or $3000 a day and when you only have two days’ work with five and six kids to feed and send to school, by the end of the week, it’s very difficult,” Debideen continued.

Given the challenges faced by residents in hinterland and riverine communities, Debideen, believes that persons living in those areas should be recipients of a regular cash grant, to buttress their households.

“I believe it (cash grant) should be given constantly like every other month or every two months because giving that would benefit residents in the riverine areas. I would be happy to see it constantly given in the

would help those families.

While she is grateful for the assistance, Hohenkirk said persons living in villages like Caria Caria should be recipients of a regular cash grant.

“I think it (cash grant distribution) should be an ongoing something. But not every month; like two or three months depending on how y’all negotiate the matter and check up on us if they want and so. I am very happy.”

Local TikTok star arrested after CANU finds cocaine in religious item

FOLLOWING the discovery of cocaine hidden inside a religious item at DHL Headquarters, Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, a 23-year-old local TikToker, was, on Tuesday, arrested.

According to a release from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), Lisa Ramnarine of Hague, West Coast Demerara, is currently in custody and is assisting with the investigation.

On June 7, CANU officers, acting on information, went to DHL and intercepted a parcel containing a Hindu havan kund.

“Officers examined the items and discovered a hidden compartment within the kund, which was suspected to contain narcotics. Further examinations determined that a substance suspected to be cocaine was concealed within the religious item,” the

Last month, President Ali announced the welfare measure as part of measures being financed by the $5 billion that was set aside in the 2022 national budget to cushion the rising cost of living.

This measure is expected to put an additional $800 million in disposable income back into the hands of ordinary Guyanese and will add to the other public support measures that the government has implemented over the past three years as the world faced back-to-back global hardships which have skyrocketed inflation across developed and developing nations. Resting in Peace, Rising in Paradise!

THE first fortnight in June is now henceforth enshrined with the memory of two giant Caribbean intellectuals, Dr Walter Rodney and George Lamming (OC).

Lamming died on June 4, four days short of his 95th birthday. June 13 will mark the 42nd anniversary of Rodney’s assassination in 1980.

This year, Rodney will continue to be remembered and revered at home and abroad. Better light has been shone on his legacy from the continuing efforts of succeeding PPP/Civic administrations which cleanse the muddied aspects of how he met his untimely end.

Between 1992 and 2000, the Cheddi and Janet Jagan administrations sought but failed to secure the co-operation of France in returning then-alleged killer, GDF Sergeant Gregory Smith from neighbouring French Guiana

to facilitate a proper enquiry.

Between 2001 and 2010, succeeding Bharrat Jagdeo administrations continued the effort to kick-start a proper investigation, but failed to get the support of Rodney’s political associates in the Working People’s Alliance (WPA).

And between 2011 and 2015, the Donald Ramotar administration acceded to the family’s request for a Commission of Inquiry to bring certainty and closure to the decades-old unbelievable and disbelieved accounts of how Rodney died.

Attorney General, Anil Nandlall and former Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, worked with the family to eventually get the inquiry under way.

The process, however, was temporarily delayed during the 2015-2020 reign of

the APNU-AFC alliance, bizarrely supported by Rodney’s WPA colleagues.

The unholy alliance of Rodney’s friends and enemies was eventually forced by the then-opposition PPP/Civic to table the Commission of Inquiry Report in the National Assembly – findings that clearly ascribed conspiratorial involvement to the PNC. In 2022, the Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali administration took the process of cleansing Rodney’s legacy much further by enshrining his grave at Le Repentir Cemetery and his monument at Hadfield Street, Georgetown with the state-recognition and responsibility they so richly deserve.

Dr Ali’s administration has also corrected the officially-declared ‘Employment’ status at time of Rodney’s death from ‘Unemployed’ to ‘University Professor’; and likewise correcting the

officially-stated ‘Cause of Death’ from ‘Misadventure’ to ‘Assassination’.

Rodney’s Family cannot but be quite pleased with the efforts by successive PPP/C administrations since 1992 to correct the grave injustices that robbed Guyana, the Caribbean and the world of the body and mind of one of its greatest intellectual sons.

This year also marks the 53rd anniversary of Rodney’s publication of Groundings with My Brothers, the first work published by Londonbased Bogle-Louverture independent black publishing house.

This year, 2022, is also the 50th Anniversary of Rodney’s launch of his seminal work How Europe Underdeveloped Africa. Importantly, 42 years after his assassination is a fitting time to acknowledge the 30 years of consistent and unyielding

PPP/C efforts to ensure the world remembers Rodney for who he always was and to correct the false official accounts of how he died – and who killed him.

George Lamming, a recipient of the Order of the Caribbean Community (OC), was described in one of many regional and international tributes as “an erudite essayist and poet and an important figure in Caribbean literature and social commentary.”

His premiere novel, In the Castle of My Skin, was followed by others like The Pleasures of Exile, The Emigrants, Of Age and Innocence, Natives of My Person, Season of Adventure, Coming, Coming Home -- and his last work 12 years ago, Sovereignty of the Imagination.

Rodney and Lamming travelled the world, lecturing at universities in Africa and Europe, North

America and the Caribbean. Their teachings were always rooted in Caribbean and African history, opening closed eyes to the commonalities of global struggles for justice and against oppression, and underlining the importance of all Caribbean people understanding their origins and making their respective contributions to forever defending and promoting the Caribbean reality in words beyond comparison.

These two giants of Caribbean and world literature have transitioned 52 years between, but those five decades have seen Rodney’s legacy finally cleaned of falsities, and Lamming’s legacy is already being compiled for online global access and sharing.

As indicated in one penned tribute, may they both eternally ‘Rest in Peace and Rise in Paradise!’

Autopsy: Reonol Williams died from injuries consistent with motor vehicle accident

Deceased: Reonol Williams AN autopsy conducted on the remains of Reonol Williams has indicated that the cause of his death was due to multiple injuries as a result of motor vehicle accident, police said in a release.

Williams, 50, who was missing since May 23, 2022, was found dead on Tuesday.

He was reportedly struck down while exiting a taxi at

Enmore, East Coast Demerara The police have also indicated that samples were taken from the deceased, along with samples from relatives for DNA testing, which will be conducted overseas.

The samples were taken to independently corroborate the family’s version of the story that the body was

indeed that of Williams.

In a previous report, the police had said that the owner of the Toyota Fielder wagon involved in the accident led investigators to Coldingen, EDC after being interrogated on Tuesday following his rearrest.

On the night of the accident, the driver of the vehicle reportedly picked up Williams to transport him to the hospital but he was not seen or heard from since then.

Reports indicated that he was never taken to any hospital.

Meanwhile, family members of Williams are mulling options as it relates to his burial.

Williams’ sister, Silvie, told the Guyana Chronicle that her family was unclear when his body will be released for a proper burial.

They were not sure whether to transport the body to Region Eight where he was originally from.

Given the circumstances, she noted that Reonol may have to be interred in Georgetown.

$53.6M well to benefit over 1300 Phillipai residents SOME 1300 residents in Phillipai, Region 7 (CuyuniMazaruni) will benefit from a spanking new $53.6 million water supply system, according to a Ministry of Housing and Water statement.

Residents, on Tuesday, met Housing and Water Minister, Collin Croal; Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI)’s Hinterland Services Director, Ramchand Jailal and their team.

The announcement of the new system which will improve the community’s access to potable water was made during that meeting.

The village’s Toshao, Mark Joseph, was also present.

The Housing and Water Ministry release said there was currently no functioning water supply system for the

In the past year, the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region has seen close to $100M invested in the water sector, moving overall water access from 34 per cent to 47 per cent at the end of 2021.

The Housing and Water Ministry also noted that the project scope for the Phillipai Water Supply System includes the drilling of a new well; installation of 3500 meters of 50mm (2”) PVC pipes and 1500 meters of 19mm (3/4”) pipes with 200 service connections; construction

of a 20-foot elevated metal trestle with storage tanks; installation of photovoltaic pumping system including submersible pump, controller, solar panels and accessories; and the construction of galvanized chain-link fence around well and photovoltaic system.

Works will commence in the new week and will run for a period of three months.

She said the institute is working on two platforms. The first, she noted, is to generate innovations, while the second encourages students and lecturers to think as entrepreneurs.

At the UGIRIE exhibition, more than 30 innovations were displayed by university students and lecturers.

Professor Francis plugged the need for increased partnership with the government, as upscaling projects requires capital investment.

She explained that the story she grew up hearing about composite bread has been brought to fruition.

“This composite bread is made from cassava flour and sweet potato flour, and we have worked very hard to bring the flour itself to fruition to make the bread,” Prof. Francis said.

Coretta Samuels, showcasing the cultivation of mushrooms, explained to the Guyana Chronicle that in the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, extensive research was done on species of mushroom.

“In the process of the mushroom culture (taken from spores or tissue), we were able to source the culture from the University of Pennsylvania,” Samuels said.

She related that it is a long series of microbiological work that must be done in the laboratory, and under heavily sterilised conditions.

“After receiving the culture, what we do is to produce a base material that we pour into the petri plates, and then you will transfer a part of the culture onto the material into the petri plates, and you will allow it to grow,” Samuels said.

She explained that when this is fully grown onto the petri plates, another phase would begin where you would use an autoclave to sterilise bird seeds.

Samuels said that bird seed is used as an agro-grain material, because there were many successes in the past when using it.

“What we do, we take a piece of the culture and put it on to the bird seed, and here is where you would have this process where the ‘agro’ is colonised by the culture, and then it starts to grow,” she said.

Three arrested hours after allegedly robbing businessmen at birthday party

THREE men who allegedly robbed a group of businessmen attending a birthday party at a house in Fourth Street, La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara (ECD), on Wednesday morning, were arrested that afternoon, police statements confirmed.

Some of the stolen items were recovered and police are ‘hunting’ a fourth suspect.

According to a statement from Police Headquarters, the group of businessmen was robbed at gunpoint. Millions of dollars in local currency along with jewellery, laptops, and cell phones were carted off.

Death penalty among sentences for men who murdered Corentyne father — Judge says they showed no remorse, regret

The mastermind behind the murder, Mark Dhuman and his wingman Abdul Andre Azimullah, were sentenced to death, while their co-accused, Abdul Zahir and Shannon Batson were sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 35 years. The youngest accused, Satesh Budhram was sentenced to 17 years.

Justice Kissoon took into consideration that Budhram was only 19 when the crime was committed and played a minor role. As such, he expressed the view that he can be rehabilitated.

The judge, while delivering his ruling at the Berbice High Court said that those who resolve to engage and embrace the path of crime and criminality that violates the dignity of human life and threatens the safety and well-being of members of society, must be prepared to accept the consequences of such conduct.

“In the present case, the multitude of aggravating factors and features of this crime reflect the inherent gravity and seriousness of the offence and places this matter at the extreme high end of the scale of gravity of seriousness,” the judge told the court.

He said that the specific aggravating features and factors of the crime included the degree of planning, premeditation, and orchestration by the five accused.

He also considered that a deadly weapon was used.

While reflecting on the factual circumstances of the case, Justice Kissoon said that five children have been deprived of the benefit of their father and a spouse denied the presence of her husband.

“A worthy contributing hardworking member of society, brutally murdered by a callous few who are before the court for financial gain, leaving a devastated family to enjoy an audio, no human being ought to be subjected to or to be made to suffer,” he said.

Justice Kissoon, while handing down the respective sentences, said that the victim was also a former teacher who influenced the lives of many.

almost irretrievably, members of society must be free to go about their business and to conduct their affairs without fear of being robbed or killed, the alternative is unacceptable, and cannot be condoned,” he said.

During the sentencing hearing, the victim’s widow, Mary Jagdeo in her impact statement, detailed how the criminal actions have not only resulted in the loss of her “loving husband”, but also affected her life.

“I have known my late husband, Danian Jagdeo from the age of 17. We met, fell in love and subsequently got married. It was the beginning of our unique fairytale. The beginning of our long, happy, successful life together, or so we thought.

“That unforgettable dreadful day, the 8th of February 2017, will be remembered by my kids and I forever. It started as a normal day, when my husband, the main breadwinner, left his four innocent children to go ply his honest trade… The murder of my husband came as a shock, one that literally broke our hearts into countless pieces, that are impossible to be mended,” the grieving widow said while fighting back tears.

In detailing some of the adverse effects the men’s greed has had on her life, Mrs. Jagdeo said: “My husband’s premature death has taken a toll on us psychologically, physically, financially and emotionally. As a single mother, a status I earned abruptly, I had to embrace the fact that he was shot and left to die like an animal.”

According to the grieving woman, she subsequently found out that she was pregnant while making funeral plans for her husband.

The woman told the court that she suffered from depression, but hid her pain from her children, as she struggled to maintain the family financially as a teacher.

“I am dealing with hiding my grief and being strong for my kids, and the numerous questions they ask every single day; questions that I can never give them answers to. I had to forcibly deal with attending graduation ceremonies with my kids alone,” the woman said.

Mrs. Jagdeo said that her husband’s life was “unforgettably, unfortunately, prematurely inhumanely snatched” from him and the five men should face the full brunt of the law.

“They must be allowed to feel what it is like to be away from family and friends. They need to pay for this injustice they caused myself, kids, my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and other family and friends. Those responsible consciously planned and executed his murder, one that unfortunately change our once happy fairy tale life to one of pain and anguish,” the woman said.

She also read the bible verse from Deuteronomy 20:4 which says, “For the Lord, your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you victory.”

In closing, the widow said: “You never know how strong you are unless that’s your only option.”

The state was represented by prosecutor Abigail Gibbs. The five men were represented by attorneys-at-law Siand Dhurjon, Moti Singh, Ravindra Mohabir, and Surihya Sabsook.

The Guyana Chronicle had previously reported that, on the day in question, Jagdeo was making a delivery to Soman’s Grocery when one of two men followed him into the shop and opened fire.

The gunman relieved the injured Jagdeo of a bag that contained an undisclosed sum of cash and a quantity of phone cards before escaping with his accomplice, who was waiting on a motorcycle a short distance away.

Jagdeo, 36, of King Street, Williamsburg, was a phone card agent who serviced the entire East Berbice-Corentyne area.

Azam century, Shah cameo stun West Indies

(ESPNCRICINFO) - It was all going to plan, until it suddenly wasn’t.

The usual hundred from Babar Azam - his fourth in five innings - set Pakistan up for what looked like a fairly straightforward chase of 306, before a middle-order stutter let West Indies back in.

In the end, it was left to a gem of a cameo from Khushdil Shah, who smashed four sixes en route an unbeaten 23-ball 41, to see Pakistan home by five wickets and four balls to spare.

It meant Shai Hope’s 12th ODI hundred, which was classy enough to merit winning the game in its own right, ended up in vain, as the visitors fell just short in an attritional ODI. The target didn’t hold much fear for Pakistan, at least not while some combination of the ever-reliable top three was still out in the middle. When Jayden Seales forced Fakhar Zaman to flat-bat one to short point, it brought Imam and Babar together - two men who combined famously to chase down 349 against Australia.

The West Indies fast bowlers, though, kept things tight on a Multan surface that looked like it wasn’t allowing the ball to come on so easily in the evening, and for a while, it was all Pakistan could do

to ensure they didn’t lose a cluster of wickets while waiting for batting to get easier.

While Babar took his time en route his first 50 runs, Imam was brisker.

After fortuitously surviving a marginal lbw call early on, he took charge of keeping the asking rate in check, finding regular boundaries and routinely turning the strike over. It took 56 balls for him to get to his half-century, by which time the asking rate was creeping to seven.

Eventually though, the wicket-taking threat that West Indies posed began to fade, and right on cue, Babar whirred into action.

By the time Akeal Hosein struck to remove Imam, he was in full flow, inexorably motoring along to his 17th ODI hundred.

Mohammad Rizwan, whose lack of form in this format has come under scrutiny - if only for the sharp contrast it presents compared to his T20 record - kept him company. Pakistan were building towards something of a cruise of a finish, with 72 required in nine overs with eight wickets still in hand.

But Alzarri Joseph, perhaps the pick of the West Indies bowlers, drew Babar into mistiming a bouncer, and with 69 to win and a fragile middle order to come, West Indies sniffed an opportunity. The

runs dried up and Romario Shepherd got rid of Rizwan soon after, and suddenly an asking rate that looked comfortable was pushing 12 in the final four overs.

It was time for the Khushdil show. Shepherd was put away for three successive sixes - the bottom hand power in each of them particularly impressive - as Pakistan inched closer once more. West Indies struck with the wicket of Shadab Khan and took it to the final over, but by then, the damage Khushdil had inflicted was too much from which to recover. Mohammad Nawaz sealed the win with a six over long-on, and Pakistan had survived a scare.

A classy 127 from Hope, which took him past 4 000 runs in ODIs, had powered West Indies to 305. The backbone of the innings was a 154-run partnership between Hope and Shamarh Brooks - two men who effortlessly made the transition from cool Amstelveen to sizzling Multan.

It set for the visitors a glorious platform, but Pakistan struck back after Brooks fell for 70 in the 31st over thanks to a superb diving catch from Shadab.

Pakistan secured regular wickets from thereon, while also keeping the run-rate in check, but a strong finish from Rovman Powell and Shepherd catapulted West Indies past 300.

Omari Glasgow embraces high expectations … Ready for Haiti challenge

AT just 18 years old, Glasgow is one of the Caribbean’s rising stars in the sport of football and from the looks of things, the Beterverwagting youth is ready to embrace stardom.

Glasgow has scored three goals in Guyana’s Nations League campaign from two matches and is looking ahead to his challenge against Haiti on Saturday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.

Since bursting onto the scene at the club level in Guyana, it was obvious that Omari Glasgow would have been someone special. However, no one knew that it would have been this soon.

Glasgow completed a move from Fruta Conquerors to Major League Soccer (MLS) side, Chicago Fire, in January where he’s currently

competing in the MLS Next Pro League, scoring twice in his three outings.

However, Glasgow has been impressive for Guyana, since his suiting up for the Senior National team against The Bahamas, in the Golden Jaguars’ run in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

The diminutive, but nifty forward, scored on debut and followed that up with two goals against Barbados.

With his double against Montserrat and single strike against Bermuda at home, Glasgow now has six International goals in nine outings.

NCN Sport caught up with Glasgow following another inspiring performance to help Guyana rebound, once again, to pick up three points.

“From a team standpoint, I think we fought hard, but for me, I think I could have done way better. But we’re not looking at my standpoint right now; we’re looking at the team. I think we came out and

worked hard and it was a good performance from us today,” Glasgow said.

Asked about living up to the high expectations of fans and football pundits, Glasgow said, “To be honest, yes (I feel pressured). I think the fans at home are expecting a lot from me (against Bermuda); but I was a bit nervous, I’m not going to lie, but I’m going to go back to the training pitch and work for Haiti (contest) on Saturday.”

What’s next for Omari is still left to be seen. But for now, Guyanese can enjoy the show.

Omari is on the pace of surpassing the country’s alltime leading goal-scorer, Nigel ‘Power’ Codrington.

Codrington dazzled the Caribbean with his goal-scoring ability, finding the net 18 times - the most by any Guyanese internationally - during the 26 games he played for the Golden Jaguars.

2022 CWI Women’s T20 Blaze Round 2, Guyana vs Trinidad & Tobago Home team seeking vengeance following nightmare loss

By Clifton Ross FOLLOWING their horrific opening-round loss, Guyana will be keen on making amends come today, when they battle Trinidad and Tobago in Round 2 of the T20 Blaze.

Much like Trinidad, Guyana shot themselves in the foot by blowing an easy chance to draw first blood.

After scampering to reach 87, which fell short by 7 runs, more could be expected from the local women today.

Skipper Shemaine Campbelle looked good with bat in hand, so too did Shabika Gajnabi; but these two core members in the Windies women’s team will need to play much better than they did in the last game.

With a decorated batting line-up featuring the aforementioned duo, along

with openers Mandy Mangru and Katana Mentore, coupled with Lashana Toussaint, Tremayne Smartt and other experienced players; Guyana should easily post a triple-figure score, come their second outing at Providence.

The local bowling unit will need to continue their aggressive approach, given their stars like Cherry-Ann Fraser, Kaysia Schultz, Erva Giddings and others looked impressive during Monday’s opening match.

The Trinidadians, on the other hand, look a bit more out-of-sorts than their opponents today. Jamaica had their way with the Twin Islands Republic team who failed terribly in a chase of 100-plus runs.

Their batting was suspect on the Providence surface as only one player made double figures. But with seasoned

stars in Anisa Mohammed, Brittany Cooper, Lee-Ann Kirby to name a few, a turnaround could be expected against Guyana.

The Round 2 clash will also see Hayley Matthews and the Bajan women tackle Leewards in a bid to keep their winning ways alive, after snatching a win from the clutches of Guyana.

Windward Islands women will also seek to maintain their momentum and notch up another win when they battle another winning side Jamaica.

WHEN the Smallbore Section of the Guyana National Rifle Association (GuyanaNRA) held an International Practical Shooting Federation (IPSC) Level 1 Match last Sunday the Timehri Rifle Ranges, Harold ‘Top Gun’ Hopkinson, Satya Dayaram and Jude Gordon emerged as the best shots on the day.

The event was sponsored

by Secure Innovations and Concepts, located at 246 Samaan Drive, Meadow Brook Gardens,

Georgetown.

Hopkinson outshot a very experienced field in the Open Division, accumulating 313.4879 points for a 100% match average to beat into second place, Smallbore captain Gordon Richards, who ended with 270.0 points. The third place went to Dallas Thomas with 238.4712 points.

Occupying the fourth place was Roberto Tewari followed by Carlos Mendonca and Murtland Smith in that order.

Ruling the roost in the Production Class was Satya Dayaram who mirrored the 100% return of the Open winner in her category which attracted the most competitors of the day.

Dayaram tallied 322.5801 points well ahead of the second-placed David Dharry (298.6836) and Joseph Chin in third on 203.2876 points.

Fourth, fifth and sixth places were occupied by Kelsey Andrews, Surujbali Persaud, and Vyvian Crandon. A total of 24

persons contested this category.

The top shooter in the Standard Class which saw eleven persons compete was another 100% achiever, Jude Gordon, whose 338.5062 points saw him claim the winner’s trophy ahead of the experienced Ryan McKinnon who managed a 93% return with his 317.5772 points.

Third was Azaad Hassan with 276.9051 points, followed

by Rajiv Latchana, Lavendra Luckiram and Romesh Latchana, in that order.

Guyana in League B of CONCACAF Girls’ U-15 Championship

CONCACAF has announced that the 2022 CONCACAF Girls’ U-15 Championship is scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 7 and will feature the participation of 31 CONCACAF Member Associations, as well as one invited guest.

The 2022 edition of the developmental tournament will be hosted in its entirety at the Hillsborough County Tournament Sportsplex in Tampa, Florida, United States.

“We are thrilled to once again be hosting this exciting competition, especially at such an important time for women’s football in our region with the CONCACAF W Qualifiers delivered earlier this year and the upcoming W Championship in July.

“Our U15 Girls Championship will provide hundreds of girls from across North America, Central America and the Caribbean with an opportunity to compete and experience all aspects of a top-level CONCACAF competition,” said CONCACAF General Secretary Philippe Moggio in a recent statement.

The Guyanese girls will soon know their exact opponents in League B of the Championship and full leverage of this exceptional development opportunity for all young players, the 32 participating teams will be divided into three leagues according to their CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Ranking of May 2022 as follows: League A (seven highest ranked teams and guest team): Canada, Costa Rica, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, United States, and the guest nation.

League B (next 12 best ranked teams): Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Bermuda, The Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua,

Panama, St Kitts & Nevis, and Trinidad & Tobago.

League C (lowest ranked teams): Anguilla, Aruba, Belize, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Martin, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Turks and Caicos Islands, and US Virgin Islands.

COMPETITION FORMAT Within each League, the participating teams will be divided into groups of four teams each. After round-robin play, the two group winners and second-place finishers of League A will advance to the knockout stage and will play for the

tournament’s championship.

For Leagues B and C, the three group winners and the best second-place finishers will advance to the semifinals of their respective League.

Furthermore, the remaining teams in each League will dispute an additional match for final position in the competition.

The knockout stage of each League will be disputed in a single-match direct elimination format, beginning with the semifinals, followed by a final and third-place match.

With this format, each League will crown a champion and guarantee that every participating team play a minimum of four competitive matches.

CONCACAF will announce the groups and schedule in the upcoming weeks.

The previous edition of the CONCACAF Girls’ U-15 Championship took place in 2018, in Bradenton, Florida.

The United States won their second title at that age level after defeating Mexico 3-0 in the League A Final. The 2020 edition of the competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CWI names first Test squad for Bangladesh series THE Cricket West Indies (CWI) Men’s Selection Panel today named three uncapped players in a 12-man squad for the first Test match against Bangladesh to be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua from Thursday, June 16 to Monday, June 20.

The uncapped players are wicketkeeper/batter Devon Thomas, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie and fast bowler Anderson Phillip. Thomas has played 21 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and four T20 Internationals (T20Is). Motie has so far played one T20I and was a reserve for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year.

Phillip was in the squad throughout the recent Apex Test Series victory against England, but has not made his debut to date. He has featured in three ODIs, including last week’s 3-0 Series win against the Netherlands and is in the ODI squad for the ongoing ODI Series in Pakistan.

The Test squad also includes left-handed all-rounder Raymon Reifer who has one match on his record.

Experienced fast bowler Kemar Roach is to undergo a fitness assessment as he recovers from an injury sustained in the English County Championship with Surrey. If he is passed fit, he will be included as the 13th player in the Test squad.

All-rounder Jason Holder is unavailable for selection as CWI has granted his request for a period of rest and recovery. He will therefore miss Bangladesh’s all-format tour of the West Indies.

Batter Tagenarine Chanderpaul and fast bowler Shermon Lewis have been selected as reserves.

The Selection Panel also named the CWI President’s XI to face the visitors in a three-day warm-up match at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua from Friday, June 10 to Sunday, June 12. The team will be captained by all-rounder Yannic Cariah.

Lead Selector, the Most Honorable Dr Desmond Haynes said: “Devon Thomas has been knocking on the door for quite some time. He has done extremely well in our franchise cricket system and we view this as a good opportunity to give him a go. You would notice that Raymon Reifer is also in the squad. He is another person that has done impressively well in the four-day competition and against England (earlier this year). So again, we are giving opportunities to guys who are performing.

“We think Gudakesh Motie is one of those guys who are also bowling well, and we think it will be a good opportunity for him to be involved.”

Haynes added: “We are looking to pick up World Test Championship points against Bangladesh which will be very important. It would be good for us to use our home advantage to win both Test matches and collect those points.”

On the CWI President’s XI, Haynes noted: “Yannic Cariah has captained Trinidad & Tobago at youth level and he was also the captain of the West Indies

Emerging Players team which won the CG United Super50 Cup in 2019. We are looking at future leaders. We need to start identifying these persons as early as possible.

“While we will need some assistance from the territories as well, we want to make sure there are leaders we can identify and begin grooming for the future of West Indies cricket.”
