President Ali had called for more affordable and reliable air transport to support residents, businesses and public services in remote areas.

The new fare reductions are expected to ease travel for hinterland residents while complementing the government’s ongoing investments in aviation infrastructure.

The government, Dr Ali had said, will be looking closely at the local aviation sector and operators to adjust fares accordingly, ensuring that that residents benefit.

“We will not just sit by and not allow the benefit of these cost savings to be transferred to the people” he said, stressing that the enhanced infrastructure does not simply mean reliable air connectivity and more planes, but also improved access to services and goods.

According to a statement issued by Jags Avi-

ation on Thursday, Mr Brian Tiwari, Executive Chairman of the BK Group of Companies, has endorsed President Ali’s call for lower airline prices to the hinterland, describing the move as long overdue.

It added that Jags Aviation has already reduced the cost of flights to hinterland regions and has instructed the company’s Managing Director, Ms Gail Tiwari, Manager Colonel Miguel Benjamin, and Chief Pilot Mr Carl Rodney to explore further measures to reduce fares.

Mr Tiwari said the initiative seeks to address longstanding challenges faced by interior residents and improve access to essential services.

PRESIDENT Dr. Irfaan Ali on Thursday commissioned the $920 million Aishalton airstrip in Region Nine, noting that geography would no longer determine who prospers and who is left behind, as the government presses ahead with a development agenda for hinterland communities centred on connectivity, food security and economic diversification.

Speaking with residents and other stakeholders during the ceremonial commissioning of the 2500-foot rigid concrete airstrip, the Presi-

dent noted that the massive investments being rolled out forms part of a wider project to transform hinterland communities and cement their place as a valuable contributor to national and regional food security.

He said the new airstrip would improve access to healthcare, lower the cost of living and expand market access, while creating opportunities for tourism and stronger links with the rest of the country.

On Monday, a similar airstrip was commissioned at Paramakatoi, Region Eight.

Government plans to construct at least 35 more airstrips in hinterland communities, which, according to President Ali, would support not only easier movement of residents to the capital, but the transport of their perishable goods.

Meanwhile, President Ali emphasised that food security is a valuable part of the government’s agenda.

“Food security is the most important part of my agenda.

Food security here and in the Caribbean,” the Head of State said before outlining production targets for Regions Eight

and Nine.

He said the Ministry of Agriculture and the Guyana Marketing Corporation have been mandated to ensure minimum outputs to meet primarily national demand. These include 500,000 pounds of citrus, 50,000 pounds of potatoes, 200,000 pounds of peanuts, one million pounds of carrots and 150,000 pounds of mangoes, with initial shipments already under way.

Mohameds’ extradition case: Magistrate allows filing of Foreign Affairs Minister’s statement –– adjourns matter to February 5,6

THE court on Thursday allowed a statement from Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Hugh Hilton Todd, to be filed and served on the defence in the extradition proceedings involving United States-sanctioned businessmen Nazar Mohamed and his son, Azruddin Mohamed. The decision ultimately resulted in the matter being adjourned to February.

The ruling was made by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after it emerged that the prosecution had made a late disclosure of the minister’s statement.

The prosecution, led by Jamaican King’s Counsel Terrence Williams and including Jamaican attorneys Herbert McKenzie and Celine Deidrick, along with Glenn Hanoman, informed the court that the minister’s statement had been emailed to both the court and the defence on Wednesday.

The Principal Magistrate confirmed that she had received the document, but defence attorneys initially told the court they were not in receipt of it.

After checking his email while in court, defence lawyer Siand Dhurjon confirmed that he had indeed received the email containing the minister’s statement.

When the matter was called, the prosecution sought to continue the evidence of Sharon Roopchand-Edwards, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, who had been called as the first witness when the committal hearing com-

menced on Tuesday. However, the proceedings took a turn when the late disclosure of Minister Todd’s statement was raised. Magistrate Latchman refused to allow the witness to proceed, citing the belated nature of the disclosure.

The magistrate made it clear that no further material would be allowed to be introduced after the minister’s statement.

The court granted the defence time to examine the newly disclosed statement, and as a result, the extradition proceedings were adjourned to February 5 and 6.

The magistrate had initially proposed January 20 as a continuation date, but some attorneys indicated that the date was not convenient.

STATEMENT WILL PROVIDE CLARITY The statement from Minister Todd is intended to address matters arising under section 6 of the Fugitive Offenders (Amendment) Act. Lead prosecutor, King’s Counsel Terrence Williams, explained that the statement would be used to tender a certificate rather than calling the minister as a witness.

He said the disclosure was made out of an abundance of caution and argued that the defence had cited no authorities to support the position that the prosecution requires leave of the court to disclose additional documents if an issue arises.

Williams further told the court that section 6 of the Act allows for a certificate issued by the minister responsible for foreign affairs, or by a

person authorised by him, to be admitted as conclusive proof of the existence and terms of an extradition arrangement between Guyana and a foreign territory.

Under the section, such a certificate is admissible in evidence without proof of the minister’s signature, the signature of the authorised person, or the authorisation itself.

Specifically, section 6 states that a certificate confirming the existence of an arrangement made between the United Kingdom and the government of a foreign territory that extends to and remains in force in Guyana, or an arrangement made between the Government of Guyana and the government of any foreign territory, shall be admissible as conclusive proof of the matters stated therein.

Despite defending the late disclosure, Williams acknowledged that he could not guarantee there would be no further disclosure, noting that if the need arose, the prosecution is legally permitted to make additional disclosures.

This position drew concern from the defence.

AG Nandlall calls for crackdown on touts, unqualified persons operating in legal system 5

ATTORNEY-GENERAL and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, has called for decisive action against individuals who are not legally qualified but continue to perform legal functions, warning that their actions are causing serious harm to unsuspecting members of the public.

Speaking this week on his programme ‘Issues in the News,’ Nandlall said there is an urgent need to address the growing problem of “touts” and unqualified persons operating within the legal space, including justices of the peace and commissioners of oaths who overstep their lawful

roles.

“We have to take actions against touts, people who are touting, persons who are not qualified as lawyers but are performing legal functions, including justices of the peace and commissioners of oath to affidavits,” the Attorney General said.

He stressed that the move is not intended to deprive anyone of their livelihood, but rather to protect citizens from serious legal and financial consequences arising from improper and unlawful practices.

“The intent is not to deny anyone of an income. It’s not it,” Nandlall stated.

According to the AG, individuals who are not trained or qualified in law but who purport to offer legal advice or handle legal documentation often leave their clients in devastating situations. He explained that these persons routinely prepare and submit legal documents without the requisite knowledge of the law, resulting in grave errors.

He explained that unqualified individuals who purport to offer legal advice or handle legal documents, despite lacking the necessary training, often leave people’s lives in utter misery and confusion.

Nandlall warned that the consequences of such actions

are far-reaching, noting that many citizens have lost property and substantial sums of money due to legal work being improperly done.

“They cause those people to lose their properties, lose millions of dollars because work is not done in accordance with law,” the Attorney-General said.

He added that allowing such practices to continue undermines the integrity of the legal system and exposes vulnerable citizens to exploitation under false pretenses.

“We cannot continue in a society that allows such fraudulent false pretenses to take place,” Nandlall asserted.

Touting—where individuals solicit clients for lawyers in or around court—is illegal under the Legal Practitioners Act, which sets out penalties including fines and imprisonment for offenders. The Act also allows the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Judicature to declare a person a tout, restrict their access to court precincts, and provides a process for appeal.

the document and determine their next course of action. Dhurjon went further and asked the court to order that disclosure in the matter be closed.

While allowing the minister’s statement to be filed and served on the defence, Magistrate Latchman ultimately sided with the defence on the issue of finality, ruling that no further disclosures would be permitted going forward.

The adjournment

means that the continuation of the extradition proceedings against Nazar Mohamed and Azruddin Mohamed will resume in February, with the defence expected to review the minister’s statement and prepare for the next stage of the hearing.

Before the first witness was called on Tuesday, the prosecution was asked to outline the local equivalents of the offences for which the Mohameds are

facing charges in the United States. Lead prosecutor Williams detailed the alleged offences.

Key diplomatic and extradition-related documents, including a United States diplomatic note and its accompanying materials, were tendered and admitted as exhibits in the committal proceedings on Tuesday.

BACKGROUND The Mohameds—

owners of Mohamed’s Enterprise—remain on $150,000 bail each, were ordered to surrender their passports, and must report weekly to the Ruimveldt Police Station as the extradition proceedings continue.

They were taken into custody on October 31, 2025, following a U.S. request for their extradition.

U.S. prosecutors have accused the father and son of running an international

criminal network with alleged links to high offices in Venezuela and the Middle East.

T h e p a i r f a c e 11 criminal counts in the U.S. Southern District of Florida involving alleged wire fraud, mail fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, and customs violations tied to what authorities describe as a US$50 million gold export and tax evasion scheme.

The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned both men in June 2024 for alleged gold smuggling and public corruption.

The U.S. investigation dates back to the mid-2010s and involved multiple agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Department of Homeland Security.

Development regardless of distance

THE government’s continued focus on inclusive national development through smart infrastructure investment deserves the nation’s attention and support.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali recently shared this vision again. He believes distance should be seen as an opportunity for inclusion, not a drawback.

This marks a significant change from the past neglect of hinterland development policy.

The launch of the $800 million airstrip at Paramakatoi means more than just spending on infrastructure. It shows a real change in how we think about national development. For too long, wealth in Guyana has been focused in certain areas, leaving remote and hinterland communities out of the economic picture.

This is not just wrong but also makes no economic sense. Communi-

ties rich in natural resources, culture, and talent have missed out on growth due to their location. The President’s question, “do we want a Guyana where only easily reachable places thrive?” gets to the core of this problem.

What stands out about this initiative is its understanding that connectivity is essential for real economic involvement, not a luxury.

Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill clearly outlined the connectivity plan for Regions Eight and Nine, which includes new airstrips, 29 key bridges, and improved roads.

This plan shows real effort beyond just talk. By focusing on larger vehicles and lowering transportation costs, it tackles a major economic barrier that keeps poverty alive in hinterland areas. When goods are moved by small vehicles at high costs, prices for residents become too high, limiting their

participation in the economy.

The possible benefits for education and healthcare are huge. Young people in remote areas face unnecessary chal-

lenges when trying to attend school due to distance. Healthcare emergencies can turn deadly when travel takes days instead of hours. Investing in infrastructure directly fights these issues.

This plan is also a smart investment in Guyana’s future economic growth.

As coastal areas become overcrowded and faced with environmental pressures, hinterland communities offer real chances for sustainable economic activities. Better connectivity can boost agriculture, tourism, and resource development in ways that are not possible now. Investing in infrastructure is thus an investment in building national economic strength and diversity.

One might wonder if these in-

vestments are the best use of limited resources. This is a valid question that deserves thoughtful discussion.

However, the counterargument is strong: years of neglect in hinterland infrastructure have led to severe gaps.

Current spending, while significant, only begins to tackle these deep-rooted issues. Plus, the benefits in long-term economic returns—lower healthcare costs, greater productivity, and increased economic participation—likely make the immediate spending worthwhile.

The government’s focus on fair development across all regions reflects a vision of national inclusion that goes beyond geography.

By ensuring that no child’s future is limited by where they were born, Guyana moves closer to becoming a unified nation where prosperity is shared.

Additional targets include 100,000 pounds of mutton, 200,000 pounds of beef, 50,000 pounds of onions and 10,000 pounds of cashew nuts, which he described as baseline figures to be expanded over the next five years.

“This is what we’re doing, making real investments to bring real wealth into the communities,” President Ali said noting

that production in the two regions will increase incrementally in the coming years.

“It will lead to import substitution for our country; it will lead to food sufficiency. It will lead to greater self-reliance in our production system, and it will lead us to build out a production system that is integrated into our transport and logistics system.

That is what we are building. That is how these investments are intertwined with each other,” he told the sizeable gathering.

He noted that airstrips

in the hinterland will improve access to healthcare, reduce the cost of living, improve market access and opportunities and create better connectivity. “It is an important plan in the transformation of your community. It has major economic benefit in the diversification of your economy and tourism now has a real opportunity in Aishalton,” President Ali added.

According to him, these investments are intended to drive import substitution, achieve food sufficiency and strengthen

national self-reliance by integrating production with a modern transport and logistics systems. He said the airstrip was a critical component of that integrated approach and would help bring tangible wealth into communities.

“This is what we’re doing, making real investments to bring real wealth into the communities…It will lead to food sufficiency. It will lead to greater self-reliance on our production system and will lead us to building out a production system that is integrated into transport

and logistics system. That is what we are building.

That is how the investments, these investments, are intertwined with each other.”

He further reaffirmed the People’s Progressive Party/Civic government’s commitment to Region Nine, describing the project as evidence of a long-standing partnership in service and development.

It was noted that the project speaks fundamentally to the People’s Progressive Party Civic’s commitment to the

people of Region Nine.

Many people may come with all kinds of promises and design, but always remember your longest partner in service, your most faithful partner in service, your most loving partner in service has always been the People’s Progressive Party/Civic, he emphasised.

In addition new airstrips, a 1.5-kilometre road, a modern airport in the region’s capital town Lethem and a modern terminal at Aishalton will be constructed.

PRESIDENT Dr. Irfaan Ali has stated that the government is closing the decades-old gap between coastal and hinterland communities, outlining the major investments in education, healthcare and public services, which are ensuring equal access across Guyana.

The President during a recent engagement with five female career journalists and high school students said that the hinterland, which was once marked by limited access to numerous sectors and services, is witnessing rapid transformation.

In education, Dr. Ali stated that when compared to five years ago, today, almost every hinterland school is connected to the Learning Channel or a digital platform, “so that every single school in the hinterland can be now part of the digital revolution in the Guyana Digital School.”

Prior to the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government taking up office in 2020, the education sector was severely under-resourced, but as President Ali has highlighted, there has now been a complete reform of education.

“We’re now investing to have universal secondary education in the hinterland,” the President said, noting: “Today we’re investing in world class labs in the secondary schools. We’re investing in practical instruction centres in the hinterland. We’re investing in technical centres in the in the hinterland.”

The PPP/C government has pursued an aggressive school construction programme with schools constructed across all regions in the country between 2020 and 2025.

Dr. Ali also stated that the government is addressing the nutritional aspect that aid

education development.

“So, we have the school feeding programme in the hinterland, the hinterland kitchens. We have expanded scholarships now to the hinterland. Today, we have more students from the hinterland on our GOAL scholarship programme. Almost every single teacher in the hinterland now is either trained or in the training programme.

So, we’ll have 100 per cent trained teachers in the hinterland,” he said.

Notably, since 2021, the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) has helped thousands of Guyanese to open that door of empowerment by providing access to quality tertiary education.

Over the years, GOAL has partnered with various international universities to offer a wide range of academic and vocational programmes, including certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s, postgraduate, master and doctorate degrees.

GOAL has provided a record 39,000 fully funded scholarships to Guyanese nationals, almost double the government’s initial target of 20,000 scholarships by 2025.

Further, last year some 1,345 new teachers graduated from the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE).

That new cohort took the country’s trained teacher population to approximately 68 per cent, and the number of trained teachers in the hinterland regions to nearly 92 per cent.

Region One produced 135 graduates, Region Two 164, Region Three 169, Region Four 304, Region Five 119, Region Seven 35, Region Eight 23, and Region Nine 76.

At the same time, the government is building better teachers’ accommodation, increasing the allowances for teachers serving in the hinterland, continuously increasing

the salaries for teachers and giving them opportunities to earn their degrees so that their salary scale improves, the President said.

Additionally, President Ali pointed out that there are now more students in the nursing programme in the country now from the hinterland than any other region.

“We have more persons in our patient care from the hinterland than any other region and I have this for you: The highest recruitment in the police academy came from Region One,” he said, adding: “So, in every area of national development and skills development, the most numbers are coming out of the hinterland.

Why? Because, for the first time, hinterland students have the opportunity to write CXC and to have the basic requirements to enter these programmes and we’re seeing record numbers entering these programmes. So, the results are already there.”

EVEN LEVEL OF SERVICE I n f r a s t r u c t u re a n d transportation in hinterland communities have also drastically improved,

President Dr. Irfaan Ali complementing the transformation taking place in the other sectors and as President Ali said, “Our investment is multifaceted.”

He went on to say that the government is creating an “even level of service across every region.”

The President then turned

his attention to the transformation taking place in the health sector, including the construction of regional hospitals.

Emphasising the importance of these investments, President Ali said: “Today, we have patients from Brazil going to Lethem. Five years ago, it

was the reverse. Five years ago, we had a thousand times more than were medevaced out of the hinterland that we have today. We have less today because we have been able to invest in the facilities, invest in the human resources, invest in the labs, and connect through telemedicine our health centres, health clinics, our hospitals. So, it is the evenness of investment it is to create. It is the creation of a minimum level of service that must be available to all our citizens, regardless of where they live.”

Up to December 2025, it was reported that excavation works commenced at the site of the Moruca Regional Hospital in Region One. The building of this new hospital marks another major expansion of healthcare services for hinterland communities.

The projected total investment for the project is GY$4.6 billion.

Embassy picket: Beware publicity seekers, avoid self-destruction

I ALWAYS tell people that I am a dinosaur in Guyana’s politics.

The grey in my hair proves that. I was a PPP polling agent at 17 years, then at that age went to work at the PPP’s bookstore, Michael Forde Bookstore (please name a public spot in Guyana after Forde). Since that time, I have been there, done that.

I know all (yes, all) the political players since my youthful days. If I write a book about my experience, it has to be a three-volume set. I have seen how good men and women follow political leaders in the struggle for freedom and justice, and they ended up badly broken, both physically and mentally.

The organisations’ leaders are never touched but it is the third-tier cadres and the unknown members that are singled out for brutality and imprisonment while the leaders remain untouched. I have seen that since I was 17. There was once a very big, radical figure in the WPA in the 1970s.

When we finished picketing and demonstrating, as dusk cover the afternoon, he is off to socialise with the nation’s bourgeoisie and middle class and they accepted him. But those very societal elites would scorn the third-tier activists who got locked up during the street protests. One positive exception was Eusi Kwayana. He did not forsake the victimised, unknown supporter.

Guyanese who have an interest in politics must always remember the disclosure of former AFC parliamentarian, Trevor Williams about what Cathy Hughes did to him. Mrs Hughes and Mr. Wiliams were executives in the AFC for

more than 10 years and sat next to each other for five years in Parliament.

Mr. Williams, then in charge of the D’urban Park project, asked then Minister Cathy Hughes for the cell number of then Minister Volda Lawrence. According to Mr. Williams, Mrs. Hughes told him she cannot give him the cell number of a minister.

That incident most definitely caused people to reject the AFC in the general election last year. Who would have voted for Mrs Hughes after what Mr. Williams said about her? What more graphic evidence the small and unknown activists need to know of how the big ones in political organisations treat them.

Now, for the purpose of this column.

I saw six persons picketing the US Embassy over the American military action in Venezuela in which President Maduro was forcefully abducted. Where were these persons when Maduro was on the verge of invading Guyana? Where were these persons when Maduro caused five top GDF military personnel to lose their lives?

How anti-imperialist are these six persons? Many of them in that picket swallowed hook, line and sinker, the pro-imperialist narrative that fossil fuel is harmful to the climate and post-colonial countries must avoid the oil industry. This is a barefaced manifestation of imperialist persistence. They built their post-modern societies on the fossil fuel industry but want poor countries to eschew oil production.

This imperialist persistence does speak to the war in Ukraine in which

hundreds of billions are going to the arms industry to keep the war going and that war is harmful to the climate.

The US action in Venezuela was not legally and morally right, but Guyanese should be careful with whom they picket. Three of those persons in the picket line do not need a visa to enter the US. It is the unknown people with them who will have their faces put on a computer screen and their visas will be denied. This is an old story in Guyana long before independence and one hopes those ordinary picketers realise who they are picketing with.

Picketers Vanda Radzik-Viera and her sister Danuta have been involved in litigations against ExxonMobil in Guyana in which high-priced lawyers were paid. Those millions should have gone to the poor in Guyana.

The two sisters will not be transparent and accountable and tell us how much they spent in legal fees to fight ExxonMobil. For a list of the cases these two sisters have brought against Exx-

Then there is the situation of anti-imperialist hypocrisy. The pro-imperialist newspaper, the Stabroek News, did carry their picketing exercise outside the embassy. But they are not going to picket Stabroek News.

Guyana’s justice system strengthened with US$400,000 technology boost 9

A S G u y a n a ’s l e g a l year begins next week, the justice system welcomes a donation of IT software and hardware worth US$400,000 to improve service delivery.

The items were officially handed over on Thursday during a ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters on Duke Street in Georgetown.

The donation forms part of a collaborative initiative under the Partnership of the Caribbean and the European Union on Justice (PACE), involving the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Union (EU), the Ministry of Legal Affairs, and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

To date, the Judiciary of Guyana has benefitted from approximately US$870,000 in donations, which have contributed to strengthening the administration of justice, improving access to judicial services and supporting partner agencies in advancing their mandate through enhanced digitisation and technological upgrades.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Attorney-General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mohabir Anil Nandlall, SC, said the intervention comes at a critical time, as criminal justice systems across the Caribbean undergo heightened scrutiny and reform at the highest regional levels.

He noted that crime is now being treated as a public health issue in the region, underscoring the need for coordinated and modern responses.

In this regard, Guyana will host a regional

roundtable of Caribbean Attorneys General in the coming weeks to further examine criminal justice reform under the PACE initiative.

For context, the PACE project aims to strengthen justice and security systems in the Caribbean by improving access to justice, modernising institutions, and promoting cooperation between Caribbean states and the European Union.

The AG said Guyana’s selection as a beneficiary aligns with the government’s broader vision to modernise the administration of justice, describing the justice system as the foundation for economic growth, social stability and national development.

Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Justice Roxanne George–Wiltshire stated that the Judiciary of Guyana continues to advance its digital transformation with the presentation of new court recording software and hardware under the PACE Justice Project.

Justice George noted that the Judiciary has fully embraced technology, highlighting the implementation of a cloud-based e-litigation and case management system in the High Court and Court of Appeal since 2024.

“We have 18 courts already earmarked for installation. These systems will definitely enhance court efficiency, and adding a modern judiciary requires clear and reliable recording systems to ensure a secure official record of the court proceedings.”

Underscoring the importance of the UNDP’s strategic plan,

SGCC pledges to build economies by continuously supporting Guyanese, Surinamese entrepreneurs

CHAMPIONED by key government figures from Suriname and Guyana, the Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce (SGCC) was formed with the aim of only strengthening economic ties between both nations, but to set a new standard for regional cooperation.

Initiated by Suriname Ambassador to Guyana Liselle Blankendal and Guyana’s Dr. Vishnu Doerga, the SGCC is described as a beacon of trade facilitation and economic partnership between the two neighbours.

The Chamber serves as a bridge that connects businesses, governments, and communities across both countries and the Caribbean.

Speaking on its impact, the Chairman of the SGCC, Dr. Doerga, said that the organisation has run more than a dozen trade missions between the countries, taking Guyanese businesses to the Suriname Energy Conference, and Suriname Building Expo, and similarly, bringing

Suriname businesses here for our conferences and building expo.

He highlighted that the biggest way they have moved efforts along is through its viral International Business Conferences, one of which was held last October in Guyana. The next conference will be held in Suriname this October.

The goal here, he explained, is to highlight the opportunities that exist in Guyana and Suriname, as well as to bring investors (local and foreign) and ensure they connect with each other, along with key decision makers from both the government and the private sector.

According to Dr. Doerga, hosting the third International Business Conference was one of the key highlights of 2025 for the SCGG. “I think a key highlight would have been hosting the third International Business Conference with many international investors here and the companies that would

have been able to get set up in Guyana and in Suriname,” he said, adding: “I think that those are of course really good. That’s why the chamber was set up in the first place. I think the hosting of the Business Conference really helps because it brings people together and it helps them build those relationships that are necessary with the level of trust that is necessary as well to increase the business between both countries,” the Chairman said.

Speaking on membership, Dr. Doerga stated that the SCGG has approximately 100 members, split between Guyana and Suriname.

The Chamber offers a membership support programme to their members, where the secretariat in both countries evaluates what members’ need.

From a gender perspective, Dr. Doerga said the SGCC helps all businesses, run by male or female entrepreneurs, equally.

Continuing, he said cultural events is also an area that will continue to be expanded on. He mentioned the work being done to celebrate bilateral

relations between Suriname and Guyana over the last two years by hosting events around the Independence of Suriname.

In November last year, Suriname celebrated its 50th Independence anniversary, which also marked 50 years of diplomatic relations between the countries.

Noting the massive oil and gas development taking place in both Guyana and Suriname, Dr. Doerga said that having two countries side by side with this level of development is a “fantastic opportunity for both economies to develop.”

The tour is primarily designed for children between the ages of five and 13 years, however, it is not limited, as younger children who can understand the activities or even older teenagers are welcome to attend.

“Parents and guardians are absolutely allowed to attend, and we strongly encourage parental involvement at no additional cost.

This creates a shared learning experience and helps reinforce environmental lessons at home,” Chin said.

In addition to plant identification and nature walks, some of the activities include nature-based games, creative learning exercises,

basic conservation talks such as the Cage Talk at the National Zoo, observation challenges including scavenger hunts, storytelling sessions, and hands-on activities like archery, grounding exercises, and tree hugging.

All activities are age-appropriate and carefully designed to keep children actively engaged while learning.

children in outdoor and educational settings, including a biologist from the Protected Areas Commission, who conducts the Cage Talk; Chris and Helen from Trail Masters Adventure Tours, and Andrew, the Manager of the Botanical Gardens which falls under the Protected Areas Commission, who assists with the scavenger hunt and garden features, along with Duelle from the Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission, who conducts wildlife talks on open and closed seasons, and the importance of wildlife through interactive board games.

Story reading and creative activities are led by author, Chevon Lim, while archery is facilitated by professionals from Pro-Archers.

“The tour is overseen by licensed tour operators and guides, including myself and Helen, who has extensive experience working with children in the hinterlands of Guyana and is herself a testa-

Pensioners urged to go digital as government rolls out campaign

THE Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is launching a campaign to help pensioners transition from pension book payments to bank accounts or Mobile Money Guyana (MMG).

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr. Vindhya Persaud stated that the initiative is designed to remove unnecessary hardship from the pension collection process.

bank and MMG accounts in their own names, ensuring their

pensions are deposited directly into their accounts each month.

“You don’t have to go around and get a pension book. It is deposited in your account every month. You can take out all the money, you can take out some of it, you can do that anytime you want,” Minister Persaud said.

She emphasised that the campaign is important for older pensioners and those living far from distribution centres.

“This system is safer and gives our senior citizens peace of mind, knowing their pension is secure,” the minister added.

The campaign also targets newly eligible

pensioners, encouraging them to choose digital payments from the outset as part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise public services.

The old-age pension now stands at $41,000 per month, following an increase effective January 1, 2025.

Last August, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced plans to increase the old-age pension to $60,000 a month and introduce a new $50,000 grant per year to offset transportation costs for pensioners. (DPI)

Over 300 Guyanese patients benefitted from Chinese acupuncture in 2025

- China-Guyana health partnership to deepen with new therapies, plans to address obesity in 2026 HUNDREDS of Guyanese patients suffering from chronic pain and complex medical conditions, found relief in 2025 as they received acupuncture treatment from the 21st China Medical Team.

The Chinese medical team continues to make remarkable strides in enhancing healthcare services at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), offering Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture treatments.

In 2025, with the dispatch of one additional Chinese TCM physician, the department is now staffed by two dedicated practitioners: Dr. Wei Jie and Dr. Wei Haoyang.

Since their arrival in Guyana, the pair has treated over 300 patients, focusing on chronic neck, shoulder, and lower back pain, facial neuritis, and post-stroke sequelae—conditions that are often difficult to fully resolve through conventional western medicine alone.

Dr. Wei Jie, a TCM specialist with more than 11 years of clinical experience, was quoted in a press

release as stating: “Acupuncture stimulates specific acupoints to regulate the body’s qi—our vital energy flow—while cupping enhances blood circulation and eases muscle tension.

These therapies work by activating the body’s innate self-healing mechanisms, providing sustainable relief from chronic discomfort that many patients have endured for years.”

Dr. Wei Haoyang added: “We tailor treatment plans to each patient’s unique needs.

For instance, patients with facial neuritis often respond remarkably well to shallow needle insertion around the facial area, combined with electro-acupuncture to promote nerve repair and regeneration. It’s rewarding to see patients regain facial movement and confidence after weeks of treatment.”

The expansion of the TCM team to two full-time practitioners underscores China’s long-standing commitment to strengthening Guyana’s healthcare capacity.

Gas-to-energy project on track to generate power by year-end - some 228 megawatts of power expected, Minister Indar says

THE government’s flagship Gas-to-Energy (GtE) project at Wales is progressing on schedule and is expected to start power generation by the end of this year, while parallel investments are being made to upgrade transmission lines and expand power distribution nationwide.

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, during a recent address stated that there are continuous works ongoing and by the end of 2026, it is expected that a simple cycle will kick in, which is about 228 megawatts of power coming from the plant.

Thereafter, he said the two-steam turbine should be operational, resulting in the full 300 megawatts coming onstream. “ We a r e m a k i n g sure that we manage the process and make sure that there's no slippages on the timeline,” the minister said.

The contractor, USbased Lindsayca, has already moved into round-the-clock operations.

Alongside this, the minister said there is extensive work ongoing to upgrade and expand the national

transmission network to accommodate the additional power.

The minister said the country’s electricity demand has risen sharply from some 100,000 customers to over 230,000 customers, noting that this figure has increased significantly because the economy is growing.

“So, we are now building out the backbone to move bulk power. Most of the power that we move right now is 69,000 volts. We are now up in that voltage level to 230,000 kilovolts. So

bulk power can move in the system and make it more resilient. We are also building out the substations and the 69,000 KV lines. We are now building out those as well. To accommodate the expansion, we are putting substations as strategic parts on East Coast and Berbice and region three, on the East Bank,” the minister said.

The GtE, a vital piece of Guyana’s development, is progressing well and is closer to fruition. It represents Guyana’s determina-

tion to use its natural resources to lower costs, expand industries, and create new opportunities for citizens. With over twothirds of the work already done and strong collaboration among the government, ExxonMobil Guyana, and contractors, the project is moving steadily towards completion.

The benefits of the GtE project extend beyond power, as it also has the opportunity to produce local fertiliser, which could reduce reliance on imports and save foreign currency.

The 1,400-acre Wales Development Zone is being developed around the core infrastructure of the GtE plant, positioning it as the centrepiece of Guyana’s emerging industrial landscape.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali had previously emphasised that the GtE project is not just about a pipeline and power generation, but about building the foundation for a diversified, production-driven economy.

He noted that the integration of industrial facilities within the

development zone will help create thousands of jobs, reduce operational costs, and boost competitiveness across multiple sectors.

According to the President, the project represents a major leap toward industrialisation and energy security, transforming Wales into a dynamic economic hub that will power Guyana’s next phase of growth.

Beyond the GtE project, Minister Indar said that the government is pursuing a diversified energy mix, with plans including the 165 megawatts from the Amaila project- which has already gone out back to Request for Proposals (RfP)- and an additional 100 megawatts of solar power to be added to the grid in the next five years of solar power to be added to the grid.

“We are working to make sure the entire energy mix is addressed, to meet the President's vision to cut electricity costs, to have stable electricity and to make sure that is sustainable.

That is why we created the energy mix to include renewable energy sources,” the minister said.

Speaking during a recent interview, the Head of State said, when people are aware of the policy direction, they are better positioned to make informed choices that align with national development goals.

“It is very important that government policies are understood by the population so that private sector decisions, even family decisions are closely related to the direction in which the policy agenda is going,” he said adding: “For example, a business might now

decide, given the incentives in the agriculture sector, that they want to diversify their portfolio into agriculture. A family may decide, given the incentives now on your second job the tax incentive on your second job that they are now going to restructure their family time to benefit from that tax incentive.”

The President explained that recent incentives, particularly in agriculture and employment, are already shaping private sector and family decisions.

Businesses, he noted, may choose to diversify into agriculture in response to targeted incentives, while families may restructure their time and work arrangements to benefit from tax concessions on second jobs. These measures, he said, are designed to increase household income, improve savings and

strengthen financial security.

“So, they will start positioning themselves towards building their home, expanding their home, or developing their home, which will add to their asset value and give them an opportunity to create new wealth within their family framework,” he explained.

to expanded access to financing that is expected to come on stream through the soon-tobe established Guyana Development Bank, noting that families are being encouraged to invest in small businesses

while simultaneously taking advantage of low-interest housing loans and direct government subsidies.

In highlighting the government’s community-led governance model, the President

said Cabinet’s regular engagement in different administrative regions remains a central strategy.

“We have resuscitated an approach of having the Cabinet in a different administrative region for two days every month.

This will continue throughout the next five years so that there is a direct relationship between policymakers and the population in every administrative region, because I want people in every region to feel the seat of government within every region. That is part of building One Guyana; so that the seat of government is rotated across all our administrative regions.”

Australia end Ashes with 4-1 margin over England (ESPNCRICINFO) - Usman Khawaja could not produce a fairy-tale finish to his Test career, but Australia overcame a fright to chase down the 160-run target at SCG and record a convincing 4-1 Ashes victory.

It wasn’t quite a grandstand ending, with Australia mostly in control despite

some chaotic batting that was befitting of this rather baffling Ashes series that ultimately did not live up to the hype.

But there was much theatre on the final day in what proved to be the best match of the series.

Australia appeared to be cruising at 62 for no loss before losing three quick wickets as England sniffed an opening.

On the last day of his 88Test career, Khawaja came to the crease with Australia at 92 for 3 just after lunch, and still needing 68 runs for victory on a surface playing tricks.

He received a hug from his great mate Marnus Labuschagne, and walked through a guard of honour from England’s team.

But Khawaja lasted just seven balls and made just 6, knocked over by Josh Tongue, who finished with 3 for 42 from 11 overs and did ensure England fought hard at the end of what has been a wretched tour.

England’s bid for a late heist were slim and made even harder with skipper Ben Stokes - who did take the field - unable to bowl after injuring his right adductor earlier in the match.

Quite typically of this series, there was mayhem at the start of Australia’s chase with three lbw shouts in the first seven deliveries.

England did burn a review when Travis Head got an

edge to a yorker from Brydon Carse, who shared the new ball with Tongue after Stokes lost faith in Matthew Potts after his nightmare (0 for 141) in Australia’s first innings.

After an edgy start, Head resumed his domination of England and scored quickly without much fuss until the situation exploded in the ember of this series.

England were left aggrieved when their review of an edge against Jake Weatherald on 16 was unsuccessful despite a tiny spike on Snicko.

But third umpire Kumar Dharmasena decided there wasn’t enough evidence

to overturn the decision as Carse engaged in a war of words with Weatherald amid heated scenes.

It loomed as a pivotal moment for Weatherald after a modest start to his Test career. Unruffled by the controversy, Weatherald and Head put the foot down as Australia sped to 57 after ten overs.

Head was in the mood to end things quickly, but on 29 he skied Tongue and was caught at midwicket. It ended Head’s remarkable series after moving up the order in Perth, finishing with 629 runs at 62.90 - the ninth-most by an Australian in an Ashes series.

Guyanese Jockeys in Barbados for historic licensing process - Ross, Appadu and Kissoonchand complete physicals

GUYANA’S horse-racing industry reached a historic milestone this week as three of the country’s top jockeys successfully completed the first major step towards obtaining their international jockey licences in Barbados, thus opening the door for Guyanese riders to compete on tracks around the world.

Leading the group is 2025 Champion Jockey Yovin Kissoonchand, alongside former champion jockeys Colin Ross and Ronaldo Appadu.

All three jockeys successfully passed their physical riding examinations in Barbados, a critical requirement in the international licensing process.

The licensing process is currently being overseen by respected racing administrator Victor Cheeseman, with internationally recognised horseman Robert Malcolm Pierce playing a pivotal role in guiding and facilitating the programme.

While further assessments, training modules, and administrative procedures are still ongoing, officials have confirmed that the full licensing process is expected to be completed by the end

of this week, placing Guyana’s young riders firmly on an international pathway.

A LONG-AWAITED BREAKTHROUGH For years, Guyanese jockeys have shown natural talent, discipline and competitiveness at home, yet opportunities to ride abroad remained limited due to licensing barriers. That reality is now changing.

“This is something we have waited a long time for,” said one official close to the process. “Once completed, these jockeys will be eligible to ride not just in Barbados, but across the Caribbean and internationally.”

The move mirrors the path taken by Barbadian jockeys, many of whom now ride successfully in North America, the United Kingdom, and across the Caribbean, building a global reputation believed to have begun with similar licensing initiatives decades ago.

Now, that same door has been opened for Guyana.

JOCKEYS EXPRESS GRATITUDE Speaking following their physical examinations, the jockeys expressed heartfelt

appreciation for the opportunity.

“This is a dream come true,” said Kissoonchand, Guyana’s current champion rider. “We have worked our entire lives for a chance like this. We are thankful to everyone who believed in us and helped make this possible.”

Former champion, Ross, echoed the sentiment: “For years we hoped something like this would happen. To finally see it happening means everything to us, and to the younger jockeys coming up,” he said.

Appadu added that the opportunity is more than just personal success. “This isn’t just for us; it’s for the next generation of jockeys in Guyana who now know that international racing is within reach,” he said.

All three riders extended special thanks to the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee (JJTRC), their trainers, and particularly Robert Malcolm Peirce, whose guidance and international experience proved instrumental in advancing the process.

Pierce was awarded the Service to Community Medal (SCM) by the Government of Barbados in 2018, recognising his lifelong dedication to youth development, community service, special-needs programmes, and horse racing.

During a period when Barbados honoured citizens under the Crown, the SCM stood as one of the country’s most respected national awards for service.

Beyond community work, Peirce is also celebrated for his contributions to racing, having played key roles in: • Developing young jockeys and stable staff • Supporting under-privileged and special-needs youth through equine programmes

• Advising racing bodies and stables across the Caribbean • Being associated with major regional racing victories and championship campaigns His involvement in Guyana marks a significant step forward for the sport locally.

Now serving as a consultant to the Jumbo Jet Racing Stable and working closely with the JJTRC, Peirce has brought international best practices, structure, and mentorship to the local scene.

JJTRC moves quickly toward long-term development The JJTRC wasted no time in engaging Mr. Pierce’s expertise. Late last year, the committee released a statement indicating plans for a formal jockey school in Guyana, an initiative now gaining momentum with the international licensing of local riders.

“This is exactly the kind of progress we envisioned,”

a JJTRC representative stated.

“Licensing jockeys internationally, developing training programmes, and raising standards are all part of our long-term vision for Guyanese racing.”

With three jockeys now on the verge of becoming internationally licensed, Guyana’s horse-racing industry has taken a decisive step forward, one that not only elevates individual careers but strengthens the country’s standing across the Caribbean racing landscape.

As Barbados once did, Guyana is now laying the foundation for its jockeys to compete globally, tell their stories abroad, and return home with experience that will further lift the sport locally.

For many within the industry, this moment represents more than progress, it represents hope, opportunity, and a future finally within reach.

Butler, Bassarath to officiate at ICC Under-19 World Cup

C M C – We s t I n d i a n s Deighton Butler and Zahid Bassarath are among 21 match officials named by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to officiate at the upcoming Under-19 Cricket World Cup. The 51-year-old Butler, and Bassarath, 42, are two of 17 umpires who will participate in the event in Namibia and Zimbabwe from January 15 to February 6.

Butler, who was appointed to the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires in 2024, has officiated in 22 international matches: 14 T20Is, five WODIs, two WT20Is and one ODI. Bassarath, meanwhile, has stood in 14 T20Is, eight WODIs, five WT20Is and one ODI. The four match referees appointed for the tournament are Dean Cosker

Mark Vieira welcomes GT Challenge de Las Américas

VETERAN Guyanese racer Mark Vieira has officially welcomed the announcement that the South Dakota Circuit will host the 3rd Round of the 2026 GT Challenge de Las Américas, calling it a watershed moment for the nation’s sporting history.

However, the veteran driver is looking beyond just hosting, as he is planning to dominate.

Vieira confirmed Thursday that he will be on the grid to defend home turf in his newly acquired Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.

To ensure the machine is dialed in to the unique demands of South Dakota, a specialised technical team from the UK will travel to Guyana to conduct extensive test-and-tune sessions on the car ahead of the event.

Beyond his role as a competitor, Vieira was instrumental in making the event a reality. Serving as a key member of the negotiation team alongside GMRSC

President Mahendra Boodhoo and Luis Kumar, Vieira worked closely with Trinidad’s Franklyn Boodram to secure the Guyana leg of the championship.

“This is a major step for motorsport in Guyana,” Vieira stated. “To have an international series of this caliber, featuring top-tier GT3 machinery like Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and Porsches, racing on our soil is unprecedented outside of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship.

It puts South Dakota on the global map.”

With the event scheduled for July 11 to 12, Vieira is already setting his sights on victory.

Unfazed by the incoming roster of elite Latin American drivers, he issued a bold declaration to his rivals.

“I promise I will be on the top step,” Vieira asserted, making his intentions clear. “I am awaiting any challenge from any driver in this series. We are preparing to win.”

Greaves among trio 2025 was a disappointing year for West Indies nominated for ICC Player men’s team of the Month award

(CMC) - Cricket West Indies (CWI) president Dr. Kishore Shallow has admitted that the performances of the senior men’s team in 2025 was not up to scratch.

Under all-format head coach Daren Sammy, the West Indies won just one of 10 Test matches, one of their five One Day International series and two of their five T20I series last year. Speaking during the Mason and Guest radio programme, Shallow said the regional team had performed below par.

He said Sammy and his players, along with members of CWI’s board all had to shoulder some of the blame.

“We understand where we are in global cricket. We have not achieved the level of success that we want and certainly not at the pace that we want.

“We have seen glimpses of really great performances by our team, whether it was in Australia or Pakistan, but there have been lows, lows that we all are very disappointed in because there were opportunities where we believed we could have won matches and series that we haven’t,” Shallow said.

“There must be collective responsibility, including the head coach Daren Sammy.

Players have to take responsibility as well and the board.”

C M C – We s t I n d i e s all-rounder Justin Greaves has been nominated for the ICC’s Men’s Player of the Month Award for December, following his impressive performances in the Test series against New Zealand.

The 31-year-old Greaves enjoyed a memorable month in New Zealand, scoring 283 runs at an average of 56.60 across three Tests.

His standout performance came in the first Test at Christchurch, where he produced a match-saving unbeaten 202 in the fourth innings, which helped the West Indies secure a historic draw.

The medium pacer also contributed with the ball, taking five wickets in the series.

He will face stiff competition from New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy and Australia’s left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc.

Duffy was the leading wicket-taker in the home Test series against the West Indies, claiming 23 wickets at an astonishing average of 15.43 in three matches, which helped New Zealand claim the series 2-0.

His imperious form in the final month of 2025 helped him become the highest-wicket taker in a calendar year for New Zealand across formats, with 81 wickets, surpassing Richard Hadlee’s record of 79 set back in 1985.

Meanwhile, Starc was instrumental during the Ashes series in December, taking 16 wickets and scoring 139 runs in three Tests.

He was Player-of-theMatch in the second Ashes Test, contributing 77 runs and taking eight wickets to set up Australia’s win.

Starc also made a key batting contribution of 54 runs and four wickets in the Ashes-clinching third Test in Adelaide, helping Australia seal the series.
