Large-scale onion cultivation feasible here FOLLOWING several trials of onion-cultivation by small farmers, large-scale production in Guyana has been deemed feasible and would likely significantly reduce the local import bill for onions.

This information was disclosed after partnering agencies, the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) and World University Service of Canada (WUSC), had conducted pilot projects in several parts of Guyana.

The project was rolled out in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six and 10.

Presentations highlighting the findings of the trial, lessons learnt as well as recommendations going forward were made last Friday by NAREI’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Oudho Homenauth; Research

project, PROPEL Agronomist, Joanna Robertson noted that, “It is our hope to increase onion-pro duction in Guyana over a period of years…The long-term effect would be for us to gradually reduce the amounts of imports of onions in due time as production increases.”

According to statistics presented, Guyana’s annual consumption of onions is recorded at approximately 3,987 metric tonnes, costing the country a fresh market expenditure of US$ 1,459,765.

The varieties used for the trials were the Red Creole, Mercedes and Texas Early Grano. The Mercedes was identified as being most suitable for largescale cultivation in Guyana. This variety, along with the others, was cultivated during three seasons of the year. The Mercedes

The trials were conducted in areas of the Mahaica River, Kara-Kara, Amelia’s Ward, Affiance, Parika, Hopetown and Benab to name a few. Indicative research showed that monitoring should be focused on protected cultivation, nutritional and irrigation facts.

The objectives of the trials were to demonstrate that onions can be grown locally, to determine the producer’s perception of cultivating onions through participatory research and evaluation and garner consumers’ perceptions of taste and preference of the locally grown commodity.

In her review of the

variety yielded 56,444 kilogram per hectare (kg/ ha) when its actual yield potential is 57,500 kg/ha.

Other facts determined during trials were that onions which were cultivated have a longer (unrefrigerated) shelf-life of 80 – 100 days. The seedlings which were grown under shaded conditions required special attention.

Details are that heavy rainfall after transplanting could lead to more than 90 per cent mortality, pests and diseases were almost non-existent under shaded conditions, fertilisers should be applied at or near the surface because of the shallow root system and in most cases, frequent irrigation can increase bulb size of the onion.

One farmer, Dexter Sultan, shared that he has seen the results of the onion cultivation in other fields.

However, in his trial plot at Sandvoort, West Canje, Berbice, Region Six, some of his seedlings died while other plants were spoilt.

“When I went there to clear the area a few weeks ago, I actually saw some of them, they bulb very well but not fit for human consumption due to not having consistent amounts of water,” Sultan explained NAREI has been working with the World University Service of Canada through a Canadian-funded project to conduct a number

of onion and potato cultivation trials in several areas throughout the country.

The Promotion of Regional Opportunities for Produce through Enterprises and Linkages (PROPEL) project is a sustainable economic growth project, which aims to increase the value of Caribbean fresh produce. By doing this, producers will be able to access high-value markets in the Caribbean and internationally.

The Canadian government has invested CAN $100 million for implementation of the project over a six-year period.

Pilot perishes in crash –Gov’t orders GCAA to ramp up inspection of all aircraft THE lifeless body of Air Services Limited (ASL) pilot, Captain Imran Khan was recovered some time before nightfall after the Cessna 206 aircraft he was flying crashed in the interior on Sunday.

Khan’s body was located more than two miles north of the mining community of Mahdia, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).

Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCIA) Director-General, Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Egbert Field, said all efforts will be made to fly the body to the city by first light. “… by the time they got there, we were already too late,” Field said of the Special Force’s unit that had to trek almost three hours in dense jungle to get to the crash site.

Khan had been on shuttle duty and was returning from Chai Chai to Mahdia when contact was lost with his carrier.

From an aerial view, the single-engine aircraft seemed to

have flipped sideways on landing since there was clear view of its fuselage.

The GCAA director-general told the Guyana Chronicle that both of wings of the aircraft were broken off. Given the unforgiving terrain, the rescue teams had to overnight at the crash site.

Field said just after 09:00 hrs, the authority received a report of the missing carrier and explained that an Emergency Locater Transmitter (ELT) signal was picked up north of Mahdia.

He said the flight had missed its scheduled landing at Mahdia, which was supposed to be some time around 08:45 hrs.

A team comprising Guyana Defence Force and police ranks was immediately dispatched on a search-and-rescue mission called operation “Hawk Eye.” National Air Transport Association President Annette Arjoon-Martins, who spoke on behalf of ASL, told this publication that after contact was lost with the

aircraft, five planes were immediately dispatched to the identified location.

She said a Trans Guyana Airways aircraft joined the search, as well as two ASL helicopters.

Arjoon-Martins said ASL has been in communication with the pilot’s brother, who is the only family member residing in Guyana.

The relative is expected to travel to the city from Essequibo today. Khan had been working with the company for almost seven years.

Arjoon -Martins expressed gratitude to other aviation operators, the Special Forces and the support of the GCAA for their “tremendous” effort in speedily locating the dead pilot.

GCAA investigators will be flown to the crash site today.

Meanwhile, Minister of State Joseph Harmon said the government has mandated the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to ramp up checks

and inspections of aircrafts and facilities even as he expressed condolences to the relatives and friends of Captain Imran Khan.

Minister Harmon opined that is the third plane crash in less than two months and government is deeply concerned.

“We have asked the Director of Civil Aviation for there to be more frequent levels of inspection of these aircrafts, of the pilots and the facilities they use to ensure that there is a higher level of safety in these operations. We, as a small country, cannot continue to lose young men in the prime of their lives to accidents. We are calling on the director to increase [the] level of investigation and oversight over all of the operators to ensure that the serviceability of these aircrafts are checked, that the time and hours of the pilots, which they fly must also be checked and this must not just be a one off check but a regular check and also time and again, what we call ramp checks [ran-

dom checks],” the minister of state said.

Minister Harmon said that safety is a major concern for the administration and it is for this reason that the government has been expending large amounts money in the development of airstrips, particularly those located in the hinterland.

“We have expended quite a sum of money on the conditions of our hinterland airstrips. In the 2016 and 2017 budgets, huge sums of monies were allocated for the development of these airstrips out of these concerns not only for the pilots themselves but for the passengers that they carry. We want to see a safe aviation industry so that the people who have to use these aircrafts, that there must be a very safe corridor,” he noted.

The minister added: “On behalf of the government I wish to express our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Imran Khan.

The entire administration wishes to express its bereavement to the

family. We would also like to send our condolences to the crew of the Air Services Limited and to the pilots. I know it is a sad time for the company.”

Sunday’s plane crash is the third to occur in less than two months, two of which resulted in fatalities.

Roraima Airways pilot, Colin Martin, perished on July 25 when his Britten-Norman Islander aircraft crashed on landing at Eteringbang, in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni).

Two weeks later, the Britten Norman Islander Captain Dominic Waddel was flying also went down in the Eteringbang area, but he escaped with minor injuries.

In December 2014, ASL’s Britten Norman Islander, registered as 8R-GHE disappeared while on a routine shuttle operation from Mahdia to Karisparu, Region Eight.

The pilot, Captain Nicholas Persaud, 27, cargo handler David Bisnauth, 51, and the aircraft have not been found.

Rise above the challenges -- deputy chief medical officer urges nurses

By Svetlana Marshall AT a time when Guyana, like many other countries, is experiencing an epidemiological transitioning from infectious diseases being the most prevalent causes of death to chronic diseases, Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO), Dr. Karen Gordon-Boyle has said that nurses must remain true to the profession despite the many challenges.

In Guyana, the top five most prevalent causes of death are linked to chronic diseases. Chronic heart diseases, respiratory diseases, diabetes and related complications and cancer are among the country’s leading causes of morbidity, disability and mortality, the DCMO pointed out, as she delivered the featured address at the Guyana Nurses Association (GNA) Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday.

“This change in our epidemiological profile implies that there will be an increasing demand for healthcare and rehabilitation services, in addition to the medical treatment of diseases,” Dr. Gordon-Boyle posited.

For her, the increased demand for care and support is an indication that the country must step up to the challenge and improve the quality of health services, including the quality of nursing care.

“Our system depends heavily on our nurses. You are the backbone of our health system and are uniquely placed to be a voice to reckon with,” the DCMO told the nurses present

as she alluded to the International Nurses Day (IND) theme for 2017 – “Nurses: A Voice to Lead; Achieving the SDGs.” “If you are to lead, you must ensure you are in a position to inspire others to follow! If your voice is to be one others will take the time to listen to, then you must demonstrate your leadership capacity wherever you are planted -- whether you are as nurse assistant, nurse aide, midwife, staff nurse, tutor, medex or senior health visitor, your professionalism, ability to be a team player, commitment to the welfare of your patients and

colleagues, passion for what you do, going beyond the call of duty are the attributes that will inspire others to respect you and listen,” she added.

BACKBONE However, Dr. Gordon-Boyle said despite the fact that nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system, Guyana has a shortfall of nurses by at least 50 per cent, primarily at key health institutions.

Unfortunately, she said, the country’s human resource shortages have forced nurses to take either of two choices: “The first is to throw up their hands in surrender and to do

just the minimum requirements to get by or the second option… to dig in and utilise and develop their full potential, stretching the scope of their functions far beyond their defined scope of work.”

Nurses, she emphasised, must decide which type of nurse they want to be.

“Are you the nurse who sees nursing only as a job that pays the bills and perhaps may one day provide an opportunity to get out of Guyana? Or, are you the quintessential professional who sees your performance on the job as an extension

of who you are -- seeking excellence at every task, not because the patient demands it of you, but because you demand it of yourself?” she asked.

Reflecting on her days as a young doctor, Dr. Gordon-Boyle said dedicated nurses like Nurse Alexander and Nurse Cato taught her the importance of nursing care and midwifery among other important elements of the profession.

“Do not underestimate your value as nurses. Research has proven time and again that nurse practitioners are rated as good as and sometimes better than physicians by patients. Usually, it is the nurse that spends more time with a patient and therefore has a greater opportunity to impact their health through education, health promotion, care and home visits,” she pointed out.

Urging them not to underestimate their worth and potential to influence others, the DCMO called on the nurses to be a voice to be reckoned with.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE “Lead as an individual, a professional and a team player! Lead by example!”

The country’s Chief Nursing Officer Tarramattie Barker, in her remarks, echoed the DCMO’s sentiments.

Barker noted that nurses must remain professional, dedicated and trustworthy in the execution of their duties.

GNA President Veronica Douglas, delivering brief remarks, said the work of nurses, nursing assistants, midwives and other nursing personnel have not gone unnoticed,

pointing out that annually GNA gives recognition to nurses who continue to stand the test of time.

It was also pointed out that as part of Guyana’s 51st Independence anniversary, President David Granger presented Sister Rhoda Amelia Stephne Clarke with the Golden Arrow of Achievement and Sister Joan Anges Fredericks with the Medal of Service for their outstanding service in the nursing profession. Sister Clarke and Sister Fredericks were among the 31 women from various fields conferred with national awards this year by President Granger.

Meanwhile, for the awards, Victorene Martin-Pereira was presented with the Gloria Noel Award for quality nursing care, while the Gillian Butts-Garnett Award was presented to Jennifer Peterkin for being the most outstanding member of the GNA. The GNA Award for Quality Nursing Care went to Karen Carew.

Odonna Osborne, Ardis Wilson, Judy Parks and Yholana Calder were awarded for maintaining high standards of nursing care, while Carleen Van Nooten, Tristar Rose and Osiola Gilbert were recognised for their contributions to the development of the association. A special award was also presented to Shanna Haynes.

The final award – the June Trotman-Ward Award -- went to Latoya Kellman for being the most improved graduate midwife.

Bursary awards were also presented to several children who successfully completed the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and whose parents are members of the nursing association.

Shake-up in police command at Lethem -- as probe into mystery plane intensifies

IN the light of concerns over the police’s account of the occupants of an illegal aircraft landing on an illegal airstrip in the Rupununi earlier this month, Superintendent Michael Sutton has been transferred to Lethem.

Sutton’s transferral,the Guyana Chronicle was informed, is aimed at enhancing the Guyana Police Force’s operational focus in Region Nine. He will serve as the officer-in-charge and joins Deputy Superintendent of Police Rudolph Banwarie.

On August 14, the police discovered an abandoned aircraft on an illegal airstrip discovered two weeks prior some five miles west of Santa Fé.

According to police, the discovery was made as a result of “a due-vigilance exercise” following reports of the frequent sighting of a foreign aircraft in the Santa Fé area.

It was the result of a tipoff that the police visited the area and conducted a thorough check when they uncovered over a dozen 10-gallon jars of fuel in the bushes, and that a swathe of land had been recently cleared.

It was as the team was preparing to leave the area, they observed an aircraft

circling overhead some distance away. On returning to the cleared area, the police saw three men running away from the aircraft, which had by then landed.

Reports are that a vehicle was also left behind by the scurrying men, but the police made no mention of it in their release, except to

say that they had secured the abandoned aircraft.

The aircraft has been positively identified by local aviation sources as a high-performance Beechcraft King Air 350model, with a load capacity of more than 10,000lbs on take-off, bearing registration PRIMG.

President David Granger has expressed much concern over the discovery of the illegal aircraft here and said the matter is being treated as a public security matter.

“It would be premature of me to say what will happen to the plane, we don’t know if it was in distress, we don’t know if it was involved in any illegal activities, but as soon as that investigation is completed we will ensure that the results are known,” he said.

Minister of State Joseph Harmon had noted that the government is working with local and international partners to build capacity and strengthen security.

“The government is extremely concerned; we are concerned that these aircraft are utilising our large gaps in the security coverage in the hinterland areas, but we are looking carefully to see how we can have a proper coverage of those areas,” he said.

He said, too, that government has recognised that over a period of years, there are those who have taken advantage of the lack of adequate resources to properly monitor those areas, but noted that his administration is taking the matter very seriously and is making every effort to better equip the security forces and strengthen their capacity to secure Guyana’s territory.

NTC thanks Gov’t for support PRESIDENT David Granger Saturday evening hosted a reception for executives of the National Toshaos Council (NTC) and the residents of the hinterland, who participated in the week-long NTC Conference.

Chairman of the NTC, Joel Fredericks, said the Council is grateful to the President and the administration for the independence and respect they have afforded it in the management of its affairs.

Fredericks said this is the first time that a government has allowed the NTC to function as it should and make its own decisions and he committed to ensuring that the NTC and its members work with the government to brainstorm solutions to address the issues raised.

“On behalf of the National

Toshaos Council, I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to President Granger and his government for supporting the NTC over the six days. It was six days of hard work; we documented the issues and we will work with your government to help address the issues and needs of the indigenous peoples of this country. Tonight is history, because this is the first time in Guyana that the government, past and present, has given the NTC the space to operate freely. Let us talk about issues. We will bring the issues to you and we will stretch our ideas and mind to try to fix them. Let us work together,” he said.

It was only on Monday, at the opening ceremony of the conference, that President Granger sounded the call for the NTC, the indigenous vil-

lages, communities and the government and all its agencies to cooperate and work towards a common goal of develop-

ment through education, economic empowerment, social protection, national security and protection of the envi-

ronment.

Additionally, the head of state, later in the day, turned the sod for the construction of

Big celebratory launch of 50th anniversary of Caribbean Carnival Week THE colours, pageantry and sound of Caribbean Carnival were on full display this week, as the Brooklyn, New York-based West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) launched its 50th anniversary celebration of Caribbean Carnival Week.

Masqueraders from several mas camps, as well as carnival lovers, officials and legislators, converged on the Brooklyn Children’s Museum for the grand celebration, held under the theme, “From a Dream to a Legacy.”

“It’s good that we got to the 50th anniversary,” costume-clad Trinidadian Kay Mason, described as the “Queen of Labor Day Carnival,” told the Caribbean Media Corporation among the gaiety.

“It’s a milestone to bring this culture together, so we can celebrate,” continued Mason, representing perennial West Indian American Day Carnival Parade’s Band of the Year Champions Sesame Flyers, who was honored by WIADCA in April.

Caribbean American Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, perhaps, spoke for the Caribbean community in New York, stating that it was “important that we stand with pride.”

Later, in her brief remarks, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, who represents the predominantly Caribbean 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn, led the audience to a chant of “Get out the Vote,” while calling for President Donald J. Trump’s ouster, with the re-

frain, “As soon as Possible.”

WIADCA’s president William Howard assured the effervescent crowd that “you’ll have a good time [during the Carnival Parade on Eastern Parkway on Labor Day, September 4].

The 50th Annual New York Caribbean Carnival Week kicks off this Thursday, August 31, with “Reggae Unda Di Stars.”

Stephen “Ragga” Marley is also expected to appear on Thursday, commemorating his father’s [Bob Marley] visit to the same Brooklyn stage, where Marley debuted “Uprising,” “and expressed enthusiasm and support for WIADCA’s efforts in bringing the community together by promoting diversity and tolerance through music and culture in NYC,” WIADCA said.

The Dimanche Gras finale will feature The Calypso King of the World – The Mighty Sparrow; Calypso Queen of the World – Calypso Rose; King David Rudder; Swallow from Antigua and Barbuda, Ras Iley from Barbados and Dane Gulston steel pan virtuoso, along with the King & Queen of the Bands costume presentations.

Caribbean carnival was officially established on Lenox Avenue in Harlem by Trinidadian Jessie Wardell and friends in the mid-1940’s, according to WIADCA. But WIADCA said that Wardell and some of her West Indian friends started the Caribbean festival in Harlem in the 1930’s by staging costume parties in large enclosed places, like the Savoy,

Renaissance and Audubon Ballrooms “due to the cold wintry weather of February.

“This is the usual time for the pre-Lenten celebrations held in most countries around the world,” WIADCA said.

“However, because of the very nature of carnival and the need to parade in costume to music, indoor confinement did not work.”

WIADCA said the earliest known carnival street activity was held during the

1940’s, when Wardell secured the first street permit for a parade type event on the streets of Harlem.

WIADCA said the organization continues to preserve the core values of institutional transference of information, cultural pride and preservation, diversity, inclusivity and intergenerational leadership.

“Today, those values still remain the focal point for WIADCA, while bringing

Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo, at his press conference last week, urged the public not to participate in the Land Commission of Inquiry. It is his view that this commission is a waste of time since from his perspective it “will not solve a single issue people face.” To even utter such a statement suggests a woeful state of being omniscient, uninformed, or uncaring.

To ignore repeated calls to settle land ownership which has been a sore and divisive issue for decades is to ignore the issue and the reality and not to pay attention to the concerns of the people.

There can be many reasons why Mr. Jagdeo is asking the public not to attend the inquiry and he is entitled to

his view, including his right in making it public. What he is however not entitled to his is own facts, because facts are stubborn things and cannot be revised, ignored or denied.

In 2007 there was a motion sponsored in the National Assembly by the People’s National Congress Reform Member of Parliament Deborah Backer to set up a similar body as the present CoI to address the issue of regularising lands owned by Africans. Amerindians too have expressed similar concerns about land rights/ownership.

The 2007 motion was defeated by the majority People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Members of Parliament. If it is to be accepted the then PPP/C government of Mr. Jagdeo did not appreciate the need for the inquiry and settling of the issue, but it does not mean those who are affected by the matter being left unattended do not

consider it an issue.

It is Mr. Jagdeo’s thinking the CoI will not improve race relations and Mr. Eric Phillips’ presentation to the CoI is “the generation of an argument of who came before who and whom got too much” which he disagrees with. Such disagreement is okay but equally as it is felt that dissent could be expressed by him, so too one must accept the right of others to differ.

The “little boy” who does not have a job, which Mr. Jagdeo thinks the CoI will not help, may or may not be true. What is undeniably true however is that they are little boys out there, with or without jobs, who can share a story of their families’ encounter with land problems either not transported or being contested. They would have an interest in the CoI because its findings and recommendations could impact their families’ lives

and should not be hindered.

Allegations of racist policies and programmes have haunted Mr. Jagdeo’s presidency in almost every area, and while it may be considered these were part of his modus operandi or he didn’t care how such matters were viewed, for many they were and remain issues of contention.

Before the High Court is a case of him suing the Kaieteur News’ Publisher, Editor and a columnist for a column appearing in that newspapers which alleged his government was engaged in racist policies. Evidence before the sitting Judge from none other than his Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Presidential Secretariat, is that no African-Guyanese was placed as Heads of Mission during his presidency because none was felt to be so deserving.

Regional Elections saw it noteworthy to include the concerns of GECOM’s media monitoring unit about Mr. Jagdeo’s “ethnically divisive” campaign rhetoric.

The said behaviour resulted in a private charge brought against him for racial incitement, which the Centre noted. This matter is still engaging judicial attention for as at last month the Appeal Court granted an application

by Magistrate Charlyn Artiga to extend the time to file an appeal in the case.

Guyana has had centuries of racial mistrust and conflicts nurtured from a society created on racism, which became a feature of everyday life and practice in the politics of divide and rule. This defect remains and continues to haunt. They are several instances where its ugliness has been used

to further the agenda of a few, putting the collective well-being in peril. Racial healing and changed behaviours require expression, honest and frank discourse, being prepared to listen to the other side, and where necessary moving to correct any perception or action that fuels the defect.

There is no denying Mr. Jagdeo has the distinction of being one of the most, if not the most, polarising political figure on issues of politics and race. Though he may consider the CoI unnecessary, those concerned with its work, irrespective of race, are being encouraged to participate. Its existence allows opportunities to examine the issue which is a marked improvement on the 2007 PPP/C’s vote to deny this right.

City Hall to collect garbage after 17:00 hrs Dear Editor, The Mayor and City Council wishes to inform all businesses within the central business district, i.e. Lacytown, Bourda and Robbstown, that collection of refuse from their premises would be done after 17:00 hrs (5:00 pm) from Monday to Saturday.

Therefore, business owners should not place bins and other collection receptacles on parapets and other thoroughfares before 17:00 hrs. Moreover, each premises should be equipped with adequate refuse receptacles to facilitate the collection and disposal of waste. The Council has observed that several business owners are in breach of the Scavenging and Cleansing by-laws which state

that: 1) Those occupiers of all dwelling-houses, room, stores, warehouses, or other premises within the limits of the town shall, not later than 8 o’clock in the morning of every day (public holidays excepted) have the yards, enclosures and entrances thereof (including the pavement in front of the entrance) and, whenever they form part of the occupied property, the pavements in front of and around the said property swept and cleansed. They shall also place within the gateway of such premises in a conveniently accessible position a movable receptacle in which shall be placed all house refuse of such premises for the purpose of removal by the Council through its servants; and where such

premises are not occupied it shall be the duty of the owner to have the pavements daily swept and cleansed, and the rubbish removed or deposited as aforesaid for removal.

2) The covered receptacle to be provided by the occupier of every premises shall be movable, be of metal or metal lined or be made of such other material as may be prescribed by the Council, and of a capacity not exceeding, in the case of dwelling-houses, three cubic feet and in the case of business premises and hotels, twelve cubic feet. Every such receptacle shall be provided with a well-fitting cover made of material to be prescribed by the Council, shall at all times be kept in good repair, and shall be kept covered when in use.

3) When on any business premises or hotel the receptacles provided exceed three cubic feet in capacity, the occupier of the premises shall provide the necessary assistance to the scavengers for emptying the contents of such receptacles into the scavenging carts.

4) In all cases where two or more persons occupy the same premises, or where any houses or premises are let out in rooms where there is a common yard, basement, or entrance, the owner and all the occupiers thereof using such yard, basement or entrance shall be liable for their cleanliness and for depositing the house refuse in a movable receptacle as aforesaid, and shall also be liable for any offence against these bylaws. If one receptacle is insufficient

or depositing all the house refuse as many as may be found necessary shall be provided, or in the alternative one receptacle not in any case of more than twelve cubic feet capacity may be substituted, provided the conditions of by-law four are complied with.

5) The occupiers of all houses, stores, warehouses, or other premises within the limits of the town shall keep their drains free from any obstruction and in the case of tenement yards the owners thereof.

6) In the case of buildings, yards and places of a public character, such as churches, chapels, schools and other persons in charge of such buildings, yards or other places, shall be deemed to be the occupiers.

7) In all cases where by

these by-laws the occupiers of premises are bound to perform any act, if there shall be no occupier or of there is a difficulty in ascertaining who the occupier is, the owner of such premises shall be liable.

8) The occupier of houses or other premises who fail to remove branches or trunks of trees, or the waste products of any trade or manufacturer from the premises, after forty-eight hours’ notice to remove the same shall have been served on such occupier by any officer of the Council, shall be guilty of any offence punishable on summary conviction.

Lincoln Lewis slams treatment of Linden/Region 10 Dear Editor,

Note is taken that the government is moving to commission four broadcasting stations in four Amerindian communities. While this development is welcome, I cannot help but take note that it comes with blatant disregard for and denial of the freedoms of others, specifically the people of Linden/Region 10 who should have had their television station returned consistent with the 2012 Agreement signed with Central Government. It seems as though the attacks against this community continue under this government.

It was one thing under the PPP/C, marginalisation, class and ethnic discrimination and we assumed that government was vindictive because Linden was the stronghold of the opposition. Lindeners by their actions have historically demonstrated that they are prepared to hold any government, be it the party it supports or others, account-

able for their development.

From what is taking place it is evident the political leadership is out to punish some and expect them to grovel and compromise for their rights as others are made to feel that such will be assured just because of who they are.

L i n d e n v o t e d o v e rwhelmingly for this government and gave it the privilege to sit in office. These voters not only stood strong behind the coalition but their votes made a difference.

This government is demonstrating a level of pettiness and vindictiveness that is a handover from the struggle the community had with the major political party in the coalition configuration and it must stop.

Moses Nagamootoo who expressed concerns along his political journey as a journalist and advocate for freedom of the press, as minister responsible for broadcasting, is now turning a blind eye to the state of press freedom in Linden, and is in the forefront of carrying out

the wicked and vindictive policy of deprivation. His hero Cheddi Jagan would be turning in his grave. There is no reason to continue the PPP hatred for Linden and Lindeners.

The bauxite workers who were denied justice under the PPP continue to have justice denied under the coalition government they voted overwhelmingly for. This writer along with the Guyana Trades Union Congress have also found themselves incurring this government’s wrath for daring to publicly advocate for the working class to good governance, respect for their rights and the rule of law.

This government’s actions are a demonstration to tell this nation, communities and people what will happen to them if they oppose: you will forever be denied investment of your tax dollars, your rights and freedoms, you will be made to suffer in the efforts to bring you to your knees, economically, politically and otherwise.

Is the GFF executive still large and in charge of football in Guyana?

Dear Editor,

I STILL support the notion of the philosopher, who once said, “if one were to ask me for the prerequisite of being involved in sports I would say the first thing is to be happy”. Editor, I’m no longer involved in the administration of football, since 2010.

However, during my tenure of 28 years, which began in 1982, with a modest commencement as a Divisional Representative, I climbed the Administrative ladder as a Divisional Secretary; Assistant Secretary/Treasurer (twice); Honorary Secretary elected (thrice) and in one instance Public Relations Officer, Hon. Secretary- I.M.C. and Administrative Consultant.

Suffice, it to say that all the relevant positions were within the Georgetown Football League (GFL) and Georgetown Football Association (GFA).

Consequently, it is “mind boggling” with regards to what the administration of football has come to in our nation’s capital. Simply put, there is a “prolonged dry spell” of domestic inactivity.

That can only be equated with reading out the riot act “loss of voting rights at General Council meetings of the GFF, with attendance still

being a prerequisite, while the status quo as an affiliate is replaced by an associate”. However, for this to be achieved there must be the relevant “Constitutional Articulation” in place. Also, any other affiliate that finds itself in a similar predicament as the GFA, must be treated accordingly. Would the GFF Executive be willing to go this route?

Meanwhile where is the happiness, is it a figment of one’s imagination? Would the present administrators continue to live in a world of glorious uncertainties, where happiness offers no guarantee? Despite the fact that during my tenure there were a few disappointments, at the end of each season, being happy and satisfied was always a due reward.

Our executive was able to complete at least 85% of competitions. Further, in two instances, over a two-year period 16 sponsored competitions were completed, with the relevant reports and audited financial statements.

Finally, with 5 –a- side competition seemingly an established norm presently, how does the GFF executive view this unfortunate, money grabbing syndrome by private promoters, whose basic aim is enrichment exploiting the footballers.

Interestingly, the majority

of the players are products of the GFF, by virtue of being affiliated to clubs. As such it’s beyond my “stretch of the imagination” that feature matches kick off at 23:00 hrs.

Recently a final was inconclusive at 02:30 hrs. Where is the collective voice of the GFF General Council towards seeking a meaningful dialogue, via an Emergency Congress to discuss the continued prostitution of 5-a- side football, with no tangible financial benefits for the GFF, being derived.

At the end of the day, our beloved Guyana would be laughed at for its “continued underdevelopment of the sport”, as private promoters continue to have a field day coordinating tournaments unchecked. In the same vein can anyone of the lot, who were recently touted in the print media, of supposedly having the requisite administrative acumen of organizing, compile a comprehensive statistical tournament report?

Organizing a tournament for entirely financial gains can never be equated with organizing an “Annual Calendar of Activities”, consisting of development from the embryonic stage (PEE-WEE) to seniors. (To be continued).

Africans, civil rights-minded individuals and organisations as well as the independent media fraternity must speak out and help to bring an end against this injustice to the Linden community or any community that faces a similar fate.

Society needs divergent views, pressure groups that will press government for advancement and development. People must be able to freely express their views and desires, assured that they will not be victimized for them. This is the development Guyana needs and what is happening now is not progressiveness. History has

taught all peoples that nothing substantial to improve their condition of living and advance their rights will come without struggle, and in some instances loss of life.

I have raged about this blatant discrimination against Linden/Region 10 and efforts to break the back of resistance when only through such measures society has achieved anything.

In this Emancipation Month Africans must once again find their resolve and take pride in remembering and upholding the legacy of the struggles of their ancestors for freedoms, rights and equality, and safeguard the

progress gained.

The people of Guyana who fought against systems of slavery and indentureship must not be cowered into fighting other systems, groups and individuals who seek to suppress further freedoms. Shame on David Granger, shame on the APNU+ AFC government, shame on Moses Nagamootoo, shame on those who remain silent in society in the presence of the continuation of injustice committed against the people of Guyana. Shame.

Some of City Hall’s ‘hotshots’ should be laid off Dear Editor,

THE rather unsympathetic and indifferent response given by the Mayor of Georgetown to reporters regarding the calamity faced by the more than 45 workers from Cevons Waste Management Company who will be fired by September 1, 2017, due to Council’s refusal to pay the company the nearly two hundred million dollars it owes it since 2015, sums up the irresponsibility and ineptitude of those in charge of the Georgetown municipality.

There is scant regard for the welfare of the workers of the two companies, no concern for the well-being of these two companies that have served the citizens of Georgetown with diligence for close to three decades and a complete lack of apprehension for the mounting heaps of garbage appearing all around Georgetown and the subsequent health risks to citizens.

Her glib statement that

the situation facing the two disposal companies is unfortunate, but City Hall is financially strapped is dismissive and fails to take into account that if she, her accompanying administrative staff that goes for speech- writing and other personal assistant duties etc, the town clerk and others who travel frequently to South, Central and North America, the Far East and all over the world, would desist from going on these pointless and absurd junkets, then there would be enough money to pay the contractors.

Why does she not consider-- rather than having the two garbage contractors lay off close to 100 workers all together who work hard each day and who make a real difference to the city’s environment-- to instead lay off 100 of the ‘Big Fish Hotshots’ from City Hall from the nearly 1,000 workers on their payroll, many of whom don’t do anything productive, but who earn super salaries several times that of garbage collectors?

Since the Council is cash-

strapped as she claims, why don’t they fire also the other contractors, whom they continue to pay diligently each month due to their kinship with senior political and administrative officials at the Council and who were awarded contracts without adherence to tender procedures?

She speaks as though the Council’s purported financial woes are someone else’s doing and not due to the corruption, incompetence and inanity of the administrators at City Hall.

If she knew that the Council was financially strapped and unable to meet its financial obligations for the work they were doing for the last two years, why did she hire them in the first place? This is akin to writing a rubber cheque to a supplier after collecting his goods. This is something a senior administrative officer at City Hall is well known for doing.

If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out Dear Editor, THE announcement made by the Town Clerk of Georgetown, that the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) will be moving to seize movable property as part of its efforts to recover billions of dollars owed by delinquent ratepayers, is tonguein-cheek, particularly coming from him, who is aware of the trauma that is caused by such seizures. As they say here in Guyana ‘Sorry fah magga dog, magga dog turn round bite you.’

But has Council even considered what would happen,

should their creditors take the same punitive action against them for their delinquency?

They should realise that if you can’t take it, then don’t dish it out.

What if the Guyana Power and Light company cuts electricity to municipal buildings for the tens of millions owed them for street-lighting etc? And the Guyana Water Inc cuts the water supply for non-payment, including their clinics and day care centres and abattoir?

What about if their bankers took serious action for their non- serviced overdraft? And the garbage contractors for

the over three hundred million dollars owed for two years or more?.

What about if the Guyana Revenue Authority and the National Insurance Scheme move against them for the tens of millions that they deduct from their employees, but fail to pay over to the respective agencies.

What about if municipal employees took strike action for constantly late payments?

As the saying goes, ‘People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.’

The ‘gold’ of Pomeroon -- coconut a growing multimillion-dollar industry, providing jobs for hundreds

By Tajeram Mohabir COVERING an area of about 60 square miles, Pomeroon, a once Dutch cotton plantation, is a picturesque, deep riverine farming community and the heartland of coconut cultivation in Guyana.

The Pomeroon is dotted by scattered houses surrounded by citrus and ground provision farms, avocado trees that appear to be touching the clouds, giant papaw plants that dwarf flat houses and thousands upon thousands of acres of coconut trees.

This rustic and serene stretch of fertile land is a farming paradise that was once inhabited by the Cariwanna tribes hundreds of years ago.

Today, people of African descent are in the majority, followed by Amerindians.

There are also quite a few East Indians and Portuguese and together, all the ethnic groups in the Pomeroon make up a population of over 3000.

This area is usually accessed at Charity, Essequibo Coast, Region Two, via the 200 odd miles meandering Pomeroon River, the deepest river in this small South American nation.

It is an idyllic setting with beautiful and hospitable people, but it is better known for its coconuts, which residents proudly claim bear the sweetest and most refreshing water in the world.

Recognised as a leading health drink globally, coconut water is known for regulating the blood pressure, rehydrating the body, and being a good heart tonic, in addition to a host of other health benefits.

In the Pomeroon, coco-

nut has also been of great social benefit to residents there.

Coconut cultivation continues to be a means out of poverty, a means of tackling rural unemployment and a means of providing sustainable livelihoods for the majority of Pomeroonians.

The Pomeroon basin has 10 large coconut farmers and about 250 small producers, who together cultivate some 10,000 acres of coconut, producing around 25 million nuts per year.

About 70 per cent of the nuts are harvested for water, while the remainder are dried coconuts. The majority of the nuts -- both water

to school, build and expand their homes and upon which they depend for a secure future.

In the Pomeroon alone, the industry is worth an estimated G$2.5B and growing.

Roopan Ramotar, a prominent businessman who resides at Land of Plenty, a village on the Essequibo Coast which is about 35 miles from the Pomeroon, quit mining about three years ago, turning his attention to the coconut industry and starting operations at Caledonia, Lower Pomeroon.

“Essequibo is not only wealthy in precious mineral resources, but it has an abundance of land and fresh water. When gold prices crashed about two years ago, I had a few dredges in the mines and I found the mining operation was becoming a challenge in terms of being financially viable.

So I packed up and moved out, because I saw the ‘gold’ elsewhere. I told my friends and family that I stop mining for gold and will be planting ‘gold’ instead, and they look at me in bemusement.”

Ramotar invested a portion of his savings in developing a 500-acre plot at Caledonia from his years of investment in the rice, gold, and lumber industries.

He also took a bank loan, which he combined with some money of his own to roll out his new dream -- a modern coconut factory in his busy home village, Land of Plenty.

Though the value-added side of production has not been fully harnessed, De Silva said the coconut industry has been able to transform the lives of many poor farmers in the Pomeroon, because it is a vibrant and sustainable agri-business.

According to Singh, the successes of the coconut industry can be multiplied many times through investments from government.

“There are about 70,000 acres of land that are not cultivated. Imagine the amount of money that can be earned here, both in terms of regular coconut cultivation and from the value-added [sic] of coconut. But we need proper drainage and irrigation, canals, roads and assistance in pest and husbandry management. I believe if these things are done, the current G$1 billion generated from the Pomeroon annually will shoot up to anywhere around G$15 billion annually in a short space of time,” the chamber president told the Guyana Chronicle.

On the Essequibo Coast, in the rural town of Anna Regina, Ramotar’s Roster brand of coconut water dominates the shelves of shops and supermarkets where it is a commodity in regular demand.

Also producing bottled coconut water for export to Trinidad and Tobago is Vilma De Silva, a resident of the Pomeroon who has been in the business for the past 20 years.

De Silva, the only largescale woman producer, cultivates 37 acres of coconut in Marlborough, Pomeroon and also buys from small producers to sustain her Trinidad and Tobago market.

Like Ramotar, she declined to go into any details about the volume of her export to the sister CARICOM state, but instead chose to say that the business is “profitable” and the future of the industry is bright.

Today, she said, the industry has come a long way, pointing out in her younger days, cultivation was entirely a manual process.

“Land preparation and empoldering of land were done manually and it was hard work. Nowadays, things have changed and farmers are using excavators and to prepare their lands and weeding machines to keep their farms clean and their work is much easier,” said De Silva, who employs a workforce of 20.

But even with this positive development, De Silva, who is also a councillor in the bustling town of Anna Regina, said there are lots more to be done for the industry.

SUPPORT NEEDED “The industry needs government’s support in terms of research and product development. There are more than 160 value-added products of coconut we can go into. We need duty-free farm equipment and soft loans to [be] able to expand operations, as well as technology for development of new coconut products,” she said.

President of the Essequibo Chamber of Commerce (ECC), Dileep Singh, estimates that the added value of coconut in the Pomeroon alone is worth anywhere around $7 billion and it is an industry waiting to be tapped.

PERMANENT PRESENCE The National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), has been working with farmers to improve pest and husbandry practices, but Singh said the state agency needs a permanent presence in the Pomeroon, since farmers there also cultivate other crops.

Citrus, mango, avocado and ground provisions are among other crops that are cultivated in the sprawling Pomeroon basin.

“Our land has never failed us and government should put the necessary infrastructure in place to facilitate the growth and development of the coconut industry and for agriculture to remain a main pillar of Guyana’s economy,” he said.

Coconut is the third largest export crop in Guyana and government said it working to move the industry forward.

In the next five years, NAREI is expecting approximately 5000 acres of coconut plantations to be established in coconut-producing areas, the Government Information Agency said.

“When we start working on those we will be in a better position, you know, after we would have gotten the materials, I suspect at the end of the year or early next year to say definitive-

From Page 8 ly that we will be able to do tissue-cultured coconut materials in addition to the nurseries that we will be producing,” Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NAREI, Dr Oudho Homenauth said.

There are some 1,454 coconut farmers in Guyana, and Dr Homenauth emphasised the need for processing technology to be upgraded as well as continuous training and technical support for small-scale entrepreneurs for the manufacturing of value-added products.

Government intends over the next 10 years to position the coconut industry to experience consistent growth rates and to become a fully integrated economic partner at national, regional and global levels.

And with this in mind, it has developed a roadmap to ensure the sustainability of the industry by strengthening areas such as marketing, production and processing, research and development and finance for farmers.

One killed, another injured in stabbing incident A 44-year-old unemployed male resident of Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice, on Sunday morning allegedly wounded two brothers, resulting in the death of one.

The man has since been arrested and is assisting with the investigation. The suspected murder weapon, a knife, has been retrieved from the scene where the stabbing occurred.

Investigations revealed that about 02:20hrs, Vishram Mohabir, 19, a labourer of 258 Williamsburg,

Corentyne, witnessed the suspect who was armed with a knife, wound his brother Kunal Singh, 30, during a scuffle and intervened.

Mohabir was allegedly stabbed twice to his neck: one to the right and one to the left side.

The victims were rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where Kunal Singh was treated and sent away and his brother was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he died around 05:00hrs while receiving treatment.

Even when babies are growing in the womb, they are developing at the discretion of their prospective mothers and fathers. Unless the mother eats the right foods and looks after her health, the baby could lack certain nutrients and suffer poor health at birth or later on in infancy. The prospective outcome in life for the child starts with the choices that the parents make during the nine months of his/her gestation.

Some mothers-to-be want to to do the same things they did before they were preg-

nant, such as drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes. Some even continue to take illicit drugs, all of which can affect the unborn child in a negative way. But mothers-to-be need to put their babies first and do everything they can to ensure that their babies develop healthily and are given every opportunity to enjoy a healthy life.

Fathers-to-be also have a duty to their unborn child.

They must give the motherto-be the support she needs wherever possible -- this means emotional support as well as practical and physical support. The right foods should be provided and encouraged, e.g. plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Pregnant mothers need to rest, but should also stay active -- there should be a healthy balance between the two, so fathers must do their share of the chores plus some extra chores to enable the expectant mother to rest when necessary. Fathers as well as mothers should ‘read up’ on information about the development of their unborn child. There are books and websites that offer a variety of information -- the more informed you are, the better parents you will be.

Although newborn babies cannot speak and they may not be fully aware of what is going on around them, they can perceive when something makes them feel

uncomfortable, unsafe, insecure, unwanted, rejected or unloved and although they will grow and strive despite the odds, they will do so at a disadvantage.

Loving parents It is therefore important that parents give their baby love and attention from day one. Every child needs loving parents, preferably two -- the more united and loving the parents, the more the child will strive in a positive way. Ultimately, all parents really want their child to strive in a positive way, but pressures and stresses of everyday life sometimes get in the way and prevent grownups from making the decision to put their child first -- as a result, children suffer.

So be gentle, kind and thoughtful to your baby because he/she did not ask to be born or brought into this world and his/her future is in your hands and has been from the time of conception.

This is a great responsibility, but nonetheless one you will enjoy and ‘grow’ with as your child grows. Allow your child to explore and enjoy a safe and secure environment around people who love and care for him/her. These simple, humble beginnings in a child’s life can make a big difference to the child’s overall development and potential outcome, because children strive well on love, understanding, attention, care and nurturing.

It is often said that being a parent does not come along with a manual, but parenting is natural and is not such a hard task, as long as you start out with the best interest of the child at heart. THE Ministry of Public Security has advertised for a deputy director and head, Drug Information Network for the National Anti-Narcotics Agency (NANA). NANA is headed

by Major-General (retired) Michael Atherly.

In an advertisement placed in the Guyana Chronicle on Sunday, suitably qualified persons are being asked to apply for the post of deputy director. The job entails monitoring and assessing the implementation of the National Drug Strategy Master Plan on a continuous basis in collaboration with stakeholders, which includes civil society and the academic community.

The deputy director is also required to update drug policies, plans and programmes in accordance with the results of their evaluations.

Moreover, the deputy director is required to assess data on demand reduction and supply control including prevention, treatment, reintegration and illicit crop cultivation, diversion of pharmaceutical products, drug market information and criminal offences, on a regular basis.

Applicants must possess

a master’s degree in management or a related field; have knowledge and experience in the use of security software applications and electronic devices, along with 15 years’ practice in management or a similar experience.

Additionally, applicants must be equipped with the ability to formulate, analyse and promote policy implementation, and have experience in matters of public security and safety coupled with the requisite training and education.

Meanwhile, applicants for head, Drug Information Network, will be responsible for the conducting research, compiling and co-coordinating drug-related statistics and other vital information.

The successful applicant would also be required to disseminate drug demand and supply information resulting from the analyses and syntheses of studies and data collection for use by policy-makers and stakeholders.

The candidate, once selected, will be required to build resources and capacities to allow the implementation of objectives and accomplishment of responsibilities.

Applicants must possess

a master’s degree in management or a related field, must have five years’ knowledge and experience in counter anti-narcotics issues and be equipped with the ability to formulate, analyse and promote policy implementation.

Training and education in the field would prove advantageous.

Those selected wil be employed for a period of one year with a possibility of renewal. The terms of reference for the two positions can be obtained from the Ministry of Public Security’s Personnel Department and all applications and curriculum vitae must be sent to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Security, Lot 6 Brickdam on or before September 1.

In 2016, the Government of Guyana launched a new National Drug Strategy Master Plan (2016-2020) and created NANA. The agency was created to be the new umbrella body to overlook the country’s anti-narcotics programme and partners with the Guyana Revenue Authority’s Customs and Trade Administration, the Police Anti-Narcotics Branch and Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU).

Overcoming struggles

-- Dr Hercules-Couchman on course to fulfil her dreams as a doctor

“I LIKE fixing bones, I like the challenge,” Dr. Shonette Hercules-Couchman said as she sat down with the Guyana Chronicle.

Dr. Couchman, an aspiring orthopaedic surgeon, who is originally from Ibini in the Berbice River in Region 10, is now on a journey to fulfil her dreams.

Today, she leaves for China along with 13 other Guyanese to secure her master’s degree in orthopaedic surgery at the Nanjing Medical University.

But for the 29-year-old, it was tough growing up in a single-parent home headed by an unemployed mother. In an attempt to provide a better life for her four children, Dr. Hercules-Couchman’s mother relocated with her children to Kwakwani in 1995.

“It was a real struggle, because employment for a woman was difficult and my mother went through it all, but eventually she got a job. Seeing my mom going through what she went through I told myself I don’t wanna become like that, I don’t want to end up in the same situation. Seeing my mom in that condition made me want to become successful,” Dr. Hercules-Couchman recalled.

In Kwakwani, the young and vibrant Couchman attended the Kwakwani Secondary School where her mother worked as a janitor. On many days, she remained after school to assist her mom.

“My success came from my struggle,” she emphasised.

At age 14, Dr. Hercules-Couchman’s uncle died and no one knew the cause. It was that moment she knew what she wanted to become.

The self-driven young lady in 2005 topped the Kwakwani Secondary School with 10 subjects. At the time, scholarships were being offered to study in Cuba and though it was a great opportunity, she needed her science subjects and as such, decided to go back to school.

It was not long after that her family relocated to Linden, allowing her the opportunity to attend the Mackenzie High School. The following year before the results came out, the confident Couchman applied for the scholarship. Dr. Couchman noted that she was one of the first in her family to attend university, so she knew that when she was accepted into the scholarship programme, that “it was God working.”

came from a Christian background, so she has always put God first. “Without God you can’t do anything, so if God isn’t between it, you will never become who you truly want to become,” remarked Dr. Hercules-Couchman.

Whenever the struggle and stress came, she would remember that “God will never give you more than you can handle.

Those words took me through it all.”

Living in Cuba was tough, but instead of focusing on the negatives, she focused on the positives. “I look at the end of the seven years I will come out successful, I will come out with a degree and I am going to become a doctor.”

In 2013, Couchman returned to Guyana from Cuba as a doctor, specialised in

human medicine. By September 2013, she commenced her 18-month rotation at the New Amsterdam Hospital, and then moved to Linden. After eight months, she was transferred to the Bartica Regional Hospital in Region Seven. It was while working in Bartica that she acquired another scholarship, this time to study in China.

There she will specialise in orthopaedic surgery to become the first female orthopaedic surgeon in Guyana with a master’s degree.

“Becoming a doctor is not staying at one place, it’s a continual process,” stated Dr. Hercules-Couchman.

“I love doing surgery, my love for surgery came about in the fourth year of medical school; from since I pick up the knife blade I felt comfort-

able, when I’m in the theatre, I feel at home” said Dr. Hercules-Couchman. Those feelings were what drove her to become an orthopaedic surgeon.

“Working in Guyana has been a real pleasure for me, helping out and giving my service to the public has been something that I always wanted to do, it brings me joy, I sleep comfortably at nights, knowing that I have helped somebody during the day,” she noted.

“I want to become one of the greatest surgeons, where people can come from all over the world and get their surgeries done right here in Guyana.

I am going and specialise to not only develop myself, but

also develop this country,” Dr. Hercules-Couchman added.

The young doctor stated that she is a very patriotic person who is very much in love with her country and that she would do anything to make Guyana great.

Dr. Hercules-Couchman’s advice to young aspiring doctors is to keep pressing towards their goals, positing that it is never a smooth road but with determination comes success.

“Medicine is not something easy, but you have to be determined, you have to study hard and once you study it’s going to be okay,” she said, while emphasising that giving up is never an option.

Suspects in gas station robbery apprehended

THE police have arrested five persons including two school dropouts in connection with the New Amsterdam Gas Station robbery which took place two Saturdays ago.

The suspects were nabbed on Sunday.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said the arrest was a result of a diligent It was noted that on August 19, 2017, three armed men stormed into a gas station at New Amsterdam, robbing the pump attendant of an undisclosed amount of cash. The pump attendant was reportedly relieved of his money by one of the bandits who was

reportedly armed with a handgun.

When the intelligence-led operation was carried out on Sunday, the police said a toy gun, a cutlass, and a hooded jersey were among items found in possession of some of the suspects.

It is believed that two of the suspects hatched the robbery and are suspected to have received a part of the stolen cash.

The suspects who are all from New Amsterdam, Berbice, will be charged and arraigned before a magistrate soonest, the police assured the Chronicle.

Linden women urged to embrace ‘green’ economy

By Vanessa Braithwaite THE National Congress of Women (NCW), the women’s arm of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) in Region 10 on Saturday held a successful one conference aimed at empowering women in Linden.

The event saw many stimulating speeches and interactive discussions geared at educating women in the region of the role they can play in promoting the government’s vision for a ‘green’ economy for better communities.

Guest speaker of the conference, PNCR long-standing member Cheryl Sampson, reflected on the late President Linden Forbes Burnham’s vision for the nation to feed, clothe and house itself and how the materialisation of such a vision has resulted in the establishment of many industries as well as some form of economic independence.

Sampson tried to create a nexus between Burnham’s vision and how it can aid in piloting projects in support of this government’s vision for a green economy.

“I’m talking about the late 70s and 80s when we were talking about feed, clothe and house yourself, I want us to look at some of the things that we did, we had to use what we had, the situation was at such that we became self-reliant,” Sampson reflected. She said as a result of the ban on cod fish, wheat flour, raisins, grapes and prunes, many industries are standing today.

“As a result of this, we have a flourishing salt fish industry ‘till we can export… as a result of that we have a thriving business out of our using what we have. Today, Mr. Yesu Persuad of DDL has a thriving

As it relates to clothing, she reflected on the days of the National Service and the planting of cotton which provided materials for textiles to make school uniforms. “It was done with a purpose because many poor people had their children educated and become something and do something for themselves.”

FEED YOURSELF Sampson then encouraged the women to embrace enterprise and production.

“In your own backyard, you can start putting down a few pieces of celery and

shallot, so you don’t have to buy it yourself and the money can buy something else, we can feed ourselves, if we go green we can contribute to our economy,” she told the conference.

She urged the women to establish cottage industries and to manufacture products such as guava cheese, sugar cake, pepper sauce, carambola and cake preservatives.

“We have done it before and we can do it again,” she said, as she advised the women to promote the ‘green’ economy policy of the government and keep their surroundings clean.

Chairperson of the conference, Minister Valarie Yearwood, encouraged the women to take advantage of the provisions provided by government, such as the

housing units.

She too urged them to get into business and to take advantage of the loans provided by the Linden Enterprise Network (LEN), not only to buy and sell goods, but to get into the manufacturing business.

During the interactive session, the women asked questions concerning land ownership, application for loans, as well as comments were made on how to support the government while being patient.

NCW executive member Denise Belgrave said in recent years, the organisation has expanded in Region 10, forming groups in new communities such as Blue Berry Hill, Coomacka, Ituni and Kwakwani.

Members also participated in leadership sessions regionally and nationally, as well as spearheading charitable ventures and health programmes.

Teachers with big hearts

--LFSS teachers financially help students to succeed at CSEC

By Vanessa Braithwaite CHRISTIANBURG Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) and Mackenzie High School (MHS) stole the spotlight at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC), but the Linden Foundation Secondary School (LFSS) has also done well.

The LFSS is deemed in some quarters as a low-performing school, but performed well in the skillbased subjects at the examinations.

This school in Amelia’s Ward has a large percentage of students who were not very successful at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), but in recent years has recorded 100 per cent passes in skill-based subject areas.

Subjects such as Food, Nutrition and Health (FN&H) and Home Economics Management have not only received 100 per cent passes, but have seen improvement in the number of grades III to grades II this year.

Head of the Home Economics Department, Petal Adams, told the Guyana Chronicle that all the students sitting FN&H passed and it is an emotional victory for her.

She said many of the students were underachievers

in other technical subject areas, but they expressed great interest in pursuing the skillbased subject, even though it is a very expensive one to pursue.

“Many of them could not have afforded to do their practical sessions and teachers and other staff members who wanted to see them succeed since they were very dedicated to the subject, went into their own pockets to see the children complete their practical sessions and to see many of them getting Grade II. The feeling is overwhelming,” Adams related.

Another staff member, Joy James, who also financially helped some of the students, expressed great joy at seeing her charges do well.

“I remembered one day I saw one of them and I said (name given), why are you not preparing for the practical and he said ‘Miss Joy and I am ashamed to take out my wares and so from by bag, because the children are laughing me because they are not proper.’ I went home and got my own stuff for him and every other practical after that, despite I may not get the money even if I had to borrow it, I would go and buy all the stuff he needed to do it and he got a Grade two and I am very pleased,” a joyful James said.

“I started the class and everything, but I almost end up dropping out and Miss Joy came to my rescue; sometime I would stay away because I didn’t want to pressure her, but she would come and look for me and make sure I got my stuff, so I am very happy about my grade,” the young lad said.

Adams said that she finds great joy in teaching the subject because she knows that many of the children are not academically inclined and can use the subject to pursue a career path that can give them an opportunity to earn.

Adams explained that the Home Economics Department at LFSS is a top-ranking one, very spacious and cooking friendly with a lot of modern equipment.

She is however recommending that some more special equipment be provided to the department, since the teachers would have to bring their own from their homes to assist the children. Despite this, the children pursuing the subjects, she said, always cling to the Home Economics room.

In addition to gaining 100 per cent passes in FN&H, the school also saw improvements in subject areas such as English A, Principles of Business, Information Technology, Mathematics and Geography.

Sharapova draws Halep in first round of U.S. Open

(REUTERS) - Maria Sharapova’s return to grand slam action will begin today with a high-profile clash against Romanian second seed Simona Halep while Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal could meet in the U.S. Open semi-finals, according to last Friday’s draw.

For Sharapova, a former world number one and fivetimes grand slam champion who returned from a 15-month doping ban in April and was awarded a wild-card invitation to the U.S. Open, it will mark her first match since pulling out of the Stanford Classic three weeks ago with an arm injury.

Hamilton marks 200th race with victory in Belgium

The Briton’s fifth success in 12 races this season, and 58th of his career, came a day after he equalled Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 68 pole positions.

Explosive McCullum leads Knight Riders to another win

A BRILLIANT 91 from Brendon McCullum and a composed bowling performance from the Trinbago Knight Riders set up a 36run victory over Jamaica Tallawahs in Match 24 of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) on Saturday night. .

McCullum’s explosive 91 helped the Knight Riders equal the highest score this season of 208 - a total that proved too many for the Tallawahs despite a good batting pitch.

After being put into bat the Knight Riders innings got off to the worst possible start when Sunil Narine picked out mid-off from the first ball of the innings, bowled by Krishmar Santokie.

This season the Knight Riders have not allowed early wickets to inhibit their stroke-play and here was no different. Through a mixture of poor bowling and excellent batting McCullum and Colin Munro hit four boundaries each in the PowerPlay, taking the Knight Riders to 58 for 1 after six overs.

The end of the field restrictions did not slow the Knight Riders who took 34 off the three overs immediately after the PowerPlay, hitting one boundary an over and running proactively.

The second half of the innings brought no letup in the scoring rate. A single on the off side took McCullum to his fifty off 35 balls. His next scoring shot was an outrageous ramp shot off Odean Smith that went for six.

A sparky cameo of 21 off 12 balls from Andre McCarthy rekindled Tallawahs hopes but they needed more than just cameos. 33 came from the four overs between 12 and 16 leaving the Tallawahs requiring an unlikely 60 from 24 balls.

It was then that two wickets in two balls from Searles, Mahmudullah caught for a painstaking 6 off 11 and then the key man of Powell caught behind, all but ended the match.

Defeat for the Tallawahs means that they have still not qualified for the Play Off stage with Barbados Tridents and Guyana Amazon Warriors in pursuit.

Dubious officiating hand Suriname 1-0 win and IGG Male football title

IT was an offside that even Stevie Wonder would’ve seen, but the Referee Assistant kept his flag down and allowed a goal from Suriname’s Damian Panale which ultimately became the strike that sunk Guyana 1-0 and handed the home side the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) Male Football title.

So big was the offside, that the Surinamese supporters who gathered at the Franklin Essed Stadium, booed the Referee Assistant.

The Referee from Guyana who carried the whistle was in position to disallow the goal, but pointed the Centre line, signaling Suriname’s advantage midway through the first half.

It was a demoralising blow but following the narrative of the game, Guyana should’ve

been up by at least three goals if they had only converted half of the chances created.

From kickoff, Shane Haynes, who scored during Guyana’s 1-1 draw with Suriname last Friday, missed an open goal after evading the Surinamese goalkeeper but patted it too soft. The ball trickled past the goal line.

Haynes was a bother for Suriname whenever he was able to get the ball, but Guyana’s midfield was poor in distributing, and the New Silvercity Secondary student had to work extra hard.

Suriname had no match for his subliminal speed and ball control but he was unsuccessful in his attempt to covert those chances to goals.

Guyana also saw one of there many attempts in the first half crashing off the crossbar.

The half ended 1 - 0.

made a few changes with the hope of finding an equalizer and even the ‘winner’ but nothing changed.

“There were several factors that affected my players off the field” Gilbert explained as he praised the performance of his team in the competition.

“For example, I haven’t eaten since breakfast because of the food they’re giving us and my players complained about it (the food) as well.

You give athletes some of the things they’re giving us and that’s something they will have to look in to” said the usually outspoken coach.

Nonetheless, Sampson congratulated the players for being a discipline bunch both on and off the field and said he was happy “the guys kept to our game plan, played the system, and was able to create a series of chances which we should’ve scored.”

Suriname beat Guyana 1-0 to win IGG female football title

CANDY Chin See Chong scored late in the second half to give Suriname a 1-0 win over Guyana and ultimately hand her country the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) female football title.

Chong had scored a double on Friday during Suriname’s 3-1 win, but yesterday at the Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Guyana was tidy in defence and kept the dangerous forward at bay.

Kwakwani’s 12-year-old ‘Wonder Kid’ Jalade Trim, along with Tiandi Smith, kept the Surinamese defenders busy throughout the entertaining 90 minutes contest, but they couldn’t capitalize on their

chances.

After the game, Guyana’s head coach, Akilha Castello, said “I’m proud of these girls. Sometimes it’s really not about the result. Yes, we would’ve love to win and I think they did their best, but if we look at where they came

from and how they started, I feel this result is a win for us.”

Castello added, “We will go back home, keep working on the programme; we will get the result. The girls will go back to their academies and work on getting better.”

LEEDS, England (Reuters) - England battled back into contention on the third day of the second Test against West Indies as Mark Stoneman’s first half century and captain Joe Root’s unbeaten 45 helped wipe out a sizeable first-innings deficit on Sunday.

West Indies added 98 runs to their overnight total at a sun-drenched Headingley as they were bowled out for 427 - a lead of 169 - and England were 171-3 at the close, two runs ahead.

England had struggled to 94-3 before Root and Dawid Malan dug in for a 77-run partnership that left the match finely balanced.

West Indies skipper Jason Holder, who earlier shared a 75-run partnership with Jermaine Blackwood, removed England opener Alastair Cook for 23 after he and Stoneman put on 58 for the first wicket.

Youthful Panthers outlast experienced Hornets in GRFU Sevens

The youthfulness of the Panther’s side was too much for the experienced Pepsi Hornets unit as they won 29-26 in a closely knit affair which went down to the wire.

side went unbeaten throughout the tournament.

Speaking to the media, the skipper said, “The better team won today. We don’t get much training in but when we do train, we train as a compact unit and I think that is what we exhibited out here today (yesterday).”

Speaking on his personal performance, McAurthur explained some of what went on during the match.

“The Guys (pepsi) were playing the ball a bit lose and they were playing shaky around the

line, so I intercepted the ball and went up the middle and I think it did well for us; it brought the game home for us because as you saw, Hornets came back for two big tries.”

“I still think there are some niggles in the team. Coming off the 15s, is a bit rough transitioning to the 7s and we have to get our fitness up, but I think it was a good start today (yesterday),” he continued.

The GRFU will close off the 2017 season next weekend when they host the Trophy Stall Sevens tournament at the national park.

Dey leads Guyana’s ‘clean sweep’ of IGG male cycling road race

By Rawle Toney in Suriname IN dominating fashion, Guyana occupied the top four spots in the male cycling Road Race event to retain their Inter Guiana Games (IGG) Cycling trophy.

Exceptional team work by the Guyanese resulted in Curtis Dey being able to have his way on the streets of Paramaribo, as he finished with a time of One hour, 47 minutes

and 59 seconds (1:47.59) to finish first.

His teammates then followed: Marcus Keiler was second (1:52.17), Jason Cameron (1:59.37) finished third and Adealie Hodge (2:02.52) came in fourth, to hand Guyana a convincing win and continued their rich tradition of winning the event.

In the female event, however, Suriname came first while Guyana’s Sheneka Tiexeira was second, Deance Welch took third

and Suriname rounded off the top four. Byonka Barker complained that a Surinamese deliberately “took her out” the race, resulting in her bicycle being damaged.

Meanwhile, having won the time trial the previous day, Guyana came out highly optimistic and it was Dey, the Trojon Cycle club member, who was urged by his teammates to ‘break out’ of the pack.

Dey rode solo for much of the 69 Kilometers road race

and so did Keiler who left Cameron and Hodge to hold the fort at the back.

Cameron, who happens to be Dey’s teammate at the Berbice cycling club, later broke out and left Hodge to ‘toy’ with the Surinamese cyclist.

However, Hodge would later on get tired of playing games and being urged by the Guyanese supporters, he would sprint away from the ‘pack’ and later joined his teammates in celebration.
