Cache of guns, ammo P

olice have recovered a cache of guns and ammunition during an operation in the Cuyuni River area last week Friday.

In a statement police said that on Friday last ranks responding to a report of threats, where a firearm was allegedly used, went to a location at Black Water, Cuyuni River.

The suspect was not found but a search in the surrounding area unearthed three single barrel shotguns, one 9MM pistol, one .38 revolver and eighteen rounds of live ammunition. Investigations are continuing, the police release stated.

GPA, activists roast NCN … over ‘anti-pregnancy stance’, suspension of staff

By Svetlana Marshall EXECUTIVES of the Guyana Press Association (GPA), with backing from the Women and Gender Equality Commission, reporters and human rights activists, protested the National Communications Network (NCN) over the suspension of Senior Reporter and Sport Editor Jocelle Archibald-Hawke, and the barring of Natasha Smith from anchoring the daily news due to her pregnancy.

Following a meeting with the GPA later during the day Smith was reinstated as an anchor, but Archibald-Hawke remains off the job.

Archibald-Hawke was suspended for a period of one month without pay over comments she would have made on her personal Facebook page criticizing a question posed to President David Granger on the Pokémon phenomenon. But long before the Sport Editor was suspended, the Management of NCN relieved Smith of her broadcasting duties due to her pregnancy.

Veteran Journalist and Executive Member of GPA, Denis Chabrol criticized the decisions taken by the stateowned agency as he stood in solidarity with his aggrieved colleagues. Chabrol, while protesting in front of NCN Headquarters at Homestretch Avenue on Tuesday, said the press association’s position is clear – Archibald-Hawke must be reinstated and Smith given the opportunity to anchor the news as per norm.

“We are convinced that what has transpired there ought to be remedied in favour of our two colleagues, Natasha and Jocelle,” he told a large pool of reporters as NCN reporters, cameramen and producers watched on from a distance. “We intend to intensify our action on all fronts, whether be it non-governmental, parastatal or governmental, to bring this matter to a reasonable conclusion on behalf of the parties involved,” he said.

ber, described the actions taken by NCN with respect to Smith as “backward.” Raghubir said while the news anchor was not directly told that she should not read the news because of her pregnancy, the instructions and guidelines that followed sent a clear message, putting Smith in a very stressful situation. “I don’t know that NCN is being run by any morality police or anything

draconian, and then we went in to meet the then Mayor Hamilton Green, to plea our cause and to ask him to rescind the decision, the decision was subsequently rescinded,” Cole recalled while noting that today her position remains the same.

Turning her attention to the issue surrounding Archibald-Hawker, Raghubir contended that the Sports Editor has been dealt several unnecessary blows. “She has been asked to apologise; she has also been sent on leave; and her pay for the month has also been deducted. What kind of message you are sending to her,” she asked.

Raghubir further stated that NCN must make its Social Media Policy clear, if there is any, and disclose whether Archibald-Hawker was warned before being suspended. Iterating an action, which she would have done on August 4, 2015, alongside Leader of the Independent Party Mark Benschop, when four female constables were sacked due to them being pregnant, Women’s Rights Commissioner Nicole Cole on Tuesday stood on the protest line.

“Both of us stood there (at City Hall) calling it a backward policy, calling it

violates the Prevention of Discrimination Act and it also violates Article 29 of the Constitution of Guyana, which is also the supreme law that guarantee’s women’s rights,” she posited.

Cole, who from all indication was outraged over the situation, said pregnancy is an important aspect of womanhood and most of all a human right. “It is not a new infectious disease, it is a right of every woman to give birth, it is a right for her to carry her baby, it is a right

He added: “One has to wonder if these gentlemen are born of mothers or did they come out of another orifice.”

Baksh is of the opinion that “strong action” should be taken against the Chief Executive Officer of NCN Lennox Cornette to deter him from repeating such action.

“While the current issue is about disparaging comments made on social media about her colleague’s work and name calling, several other factors and incidents involving Mrs. Archibald-Hawke were considered. NCN will not descend into divulging the details about personnel matters in the public domain,” the media outfit explained.

PSC URGES SWIFT SET-UP OF ANTI-CORRUPTION BODIES

THE Private Sector Commission (PSC) has called on government to move swiftly to address the establishment and operationalisation of those institutions that mitigate perceptions of corruption and the furtherance of the evolution of a truly democratic society.

In a statement on Tuesday the business umbrella body said failure to so do will create an all-time lack of interest by our society in our national politics.

“Specifically, we refer to the Public Procurement Commission and the Integrity Commission, the establishment of which entities the Government has committed itself to. On both sides we must compromise, these are not political institutions but are meant to add to transparency and accountability.

Good civil society members (regardless of how they are regarded politically) should be placed on these Commissions.”

“We believe that the time has come for an end to the procrastination on these matters and for the President to give effect to the commitment they have made to the nation on the setting up of these Commissions. We believe that the failure to establish these entities poses

a threat to legitimate business activities, creates unfair business to business competition and indeed is the reason why some legitimate businesses cannot stand up to new competition.”

The Private Sector Commission also urged the Government to fully operationalise the Financial Intelligence Unit and to equip the entity with the necessary personnel to investigate and prosecute financial crimes. “Money laundering is a scourge all over the world that cannot be ignored here in Guyana. It creates unfair advantages for legitimate companies by the lowering of prices beyond cost. It eliminates legitimate competition and feeds into the drug trade.

We appeal to all of our politicians to put Guyana and its legitimate tax payers first,” the PSC said.

Only last week the Office of the Prime Minister said that the Public Procurement Commission (PPC) is expected to be put in place shortly with appointment of its members by President David Granger. The OPM said Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Sherlock Isaacs disclosed that the names of the Commission members have been sent

The Clerk of the National Assembly explained that he acted expeditiously to give effect to the decision of the House.

On the issue of the Integrity Commission, President David Granger himself said recently that the commission is likely to become fully functional before the end of the year, and noted that government is working to ensure that there are functional laws and a strong organisational structure established before the commission can function effectively. President Granger said what was inherited from the former People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration is “unworkable.”

Though he could not provide a specific timeline as to when the Integrity Commission will become functional, the President said there has to be “tightening” of the legislation to ensure that those who are found guilty of committing illegal acts while in public office are prosecuted.

“We are working on the legislation, it will be brought to cabinet, and I expect that before the end of this year there will be a functioning Integrity Commission,” said President Granger. The Integrity Commission, the President said, was a “poorly funded” and dysfunctional organisation.

“We are going to create functional laws; functional organisation structure, and I expect that by the end of this year, when Parliament resumes in October, we’d be able to bring that legislation before the National Assembly. Give us time,” he remarked.

President Granger likened the functioning of the Integrity Commission in the past to that of a post office, where persons submitted their returns but no action was taken.

“There was a perception that the PPP was using the Integrity Commission as a means, rather than preventing corruption, of checking people’s personal finances,” said the President.

Driver on $1M bail for causing death of key witness

lic Road, West Bank Demerara was on Tuesday arraigned before Sparendaam Magistrate Zamilla Ali-Seepaul, accused of causing the death of

40-year-old Osmond Griffith of Durban Backlands, Georgetown, a key witness in the ongoing ‘Freddie Kissoon faeces-throwing’ trial.

Apparently confused, the 27-year-old represented by attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson was read a charge which alleged that on Friday, September 2nd, 2016, at the Industry Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD), he drove motor car HC 4399 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Griffith.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, but was granted bail in the sum of $1M. As regards a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, the magistrate said the accused, on the Industry Railway Embankment, ECD, drove motor car HC 4399 while his breath/ alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit. He was granted bail in the sum of $50,000., with the attached condition that he submits his passport to the police and reports to the Sparendaam Police Station every Friday at 17:00hrs.

The matter was adjourned to September 30, 2016 at the Sparendaam Court.

Norville’s lawyer had earlier told the court that his client has a fixed place of abode at 427 Schoonard Public Road, West Bank Demerara; is unmarried and has no children, but is employed at Cyril’s Taxi Service. He also has no previous convictions and no pending matters; had been kept in custody since Friday last; and, on the night of the allegation, had two passengers in his vehicle and was working at

the time.

In asking for reasonable bail, the attorney said the accused was prepared to lodge his passport and report to the police, while noting that he was not at a flight risk.

The prosecutor told the court that the Police Traffic and Criminal Investigation departments were jointly investigating the matter; and that, on the first occasion, the taxi driver had told police that someone had placed a gun to his head and ordered him to commit the act. The accused then changed his story, indicating that he was speeding when he hit the deceased.

That story was again changed, the prosecutor said, and the Police Commissioner had ordered that CID and the Traffic Department work on the case.

The prosecutor then objected to bail on ground that the accused may not return to court, since his lawyer gave one address for him and he gave two addresses to the police; the second address being Lot 92 Sussex Street, Albouystown.

The prosecutor noted that the taxi driver and two occupants of his vehicle had been

drinking at the popular Guinness Bar, and this would be shown on the breathalyzer test. He said this had been confirmed by the occupants of the vehicle, whom he had picked up to take home.

The prosecutor noted that the accused had been driving motor car HC 4399, proceeding west along the Industry Railway Embankment Public Road at a fast rate of speed when he collided with motor car PJJ 8028, which had been stationary on the southern side of the corridor.

Griffith, who was standing on the southern side of the corner of the carriageway, was hit, and suffered injuries to his head, hand, foot and other parts of his body. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by police ranks, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accused was not at the scene when the police arrived, but acting on information, the police visited a house at the University of Guyana Road and arrested the accused.

The prosecutor said the file was incomplete, but it would be completed following advice from the DPP.

GFC dumps BaiShanlin …to repossess concessions, seek payment of $80M outstanding debt THE Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) announced on Tuesday evening that it intends to repossess concessions currently being held by Baishanlin International Forest Development Inc. (BIFDI).

Incorporated in September 2006 under the Guyana Companies Act 1991 with the main objective of timber harvesting and establishing downstream wood processing operations in Linden, BIFDI has come under tremendous scrutiny over the years, with allegations of being involved in shady transactions, particularly under the PPP/C Administration.

A GFC statement said the decision was taken after BIFDI had failed to deliver on agreed actions to introduce investors to the GFC, and failing to address its liability despite having been given time to prove that it had an acceptable plan to clear a debt of approximate-

ly Gy$80M. In an effort to conclude the matter, the GFC said, representatives of the BIFDI were invited to a meeting on April 8, 2016 to provide an update on its plans to clear the debts. During the meeting, representatives noted that the BIFDI had suffered financial constraints, which affected the establishing of the wood processing facility; and that the company was engaging a new partner that would contribute significantly to its investment in Guyana.

The GFC said its Board was assured of the financial strength of the new partner who had committed to pay off the debt owed by the company.

“The BIFDI was requested to submit information about its operations in Guyana, settle its arrears, and submit a letter of commitment from the new partner. To date, the BIFDI has failed to fulfill any of its commitments to

the Government of Guyana; effectively failing on the obligations it made, which were accepted in good faith.

“In keeping with Forest Governance Practices, the GFC will be formally repossessing the concessions owned by the company, and accelerating efforts to recover the debt owed,” the release stated.

GEA completes 1 ½ years of data gathering in wind measurement THE Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) recently completed a year and half of data gathering in wind measurement.

Relocated from Yupakari in Region 9, the wind measuring system was reallocated by GEA in November of 2014 to Kumu Region 9 where it is currently gathering data in relation to wind speed and direction.

The data collected will be of significant benefit in understanding and estimating the wind energy potential of each site. “The data obtained will aid in future project studies, design and development, and it will also play a vital role in the planning process of wind energy projects,” said Kenny Samaroo the GEA’s lead Engineer on Wind Energy.

According to a release, GEA is using the data to create a wind map which is a representation of the magnitude of the wind in the different regions/sites that wind data gathering was conducted. The map, which was created by Mr. Samaroo, shows the infor-

mation in graphic form, using cartography with a scale and determined symbolism.

“While the map has been created, as we monitor more sites across Guyana the information will be added, thereby updating the map which will enable a more accurate representation of the wind potential of the country. In essence, the map will show the average wind speed measurements obtained over the years” said Mr. Samaroo.

The sites for data gathering are selected initially using Global Atlas for RE potential satellite data (obtained from Nassau or 3 TIER data bases) along with local knowledge. Mr. Samaroo explained that though information from the Atlas is used to determine testing sites as it relates to potential ‘breezy’ locations “GEA consults with locals within each of the identified communities in relation to the wind speed pattern and the most suitable location prior to setting up the wind instru-

ment”.

Once a site has been chosen, data is collected from all the promising sites within the specific region before the system is relocated to another region. The areas that will be targeted for data gathering in a new cycle, commencing in 2016, are Bartica Region 7 (relocating from Jawalla Region 7), Kato Region 8 (relocating from Mahdia) and Quarrie in Region 9 (relocating from Kumu Region 9).

The Guyana Energy Agency remains committed to carrying out research into (and encouraging the use of) all forms of renewable energy. These efforts are aimed at securing and encouraging more efficient utilization of energy and sources of energy in the public’s interest; and to develop and encourage the development and usage of sources of energy other than those currently in use with the aim of realising the vision of a ‘Green Guyana’.

The NCN staff issues

THE National Communications Network (NCN) has attracted attention by making its own news pertaining to two of its staff members -- Mrs. Jocelle Archibald-Hawke and Ms. Natasha Smith. In this Information Age, a story can spread quickly, and often with little or no control by the sender or those affected by it. Sometimes it even takes on a life of its own and attracts consequences that are favourable or unfavourable, depending on the receiver or the person being affected by it. In this landscape none escapes, as experiences have shown worldwide.

Simultaneous with the NCN issues, there is a controversy with Philippines’ President Rodrigo Duterte and United States President Barack Obama. The two leaders are presently attending the meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Laos. At a press conference on Monday, Duterte used some choice language to describe Obama, and threatened to swear at him at their scheduled Tuesday bilateral.

The White House responded by cancelling the meeting, and Obama describing Duterte as a “colourful guy”, though it is said that such conduct is not uncommon to the manner in which Duterte speaks.

Duterte has since said he regrets that his swear came off as an attack on the U.S. President, when it was not intended to be.

While it is hoped that these two countries would resolve their differences, this scenario highlights the impact communication leverages on relationships between countries in this Information Age. Prior to this period, such information may never have gotten out to create international embarrassment, touch the ego of either country or leader, or put either or both in a position of needing to ‘preserve’ a particular image for self and country.

The NCN staffing issues regarding what was said, or believed to have been said -- which have created a measure of discomfiture, including suspension for Mrs. Archibald-Hawke and Ms. Smith deciding not to read the news -- exemplify how information can travel the highway and create collisions that can be injurious to those directly involved.

In the instance of Ms. Smith, the story being circulated in the media -- social and some mainstream -- is that she was allegedly relieved of her duty as a news anchor because of her pregnancy and marital status. Ms. Smith, in a report carried in this newspaper on Tuesday, made known her side of the story. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of the matter, even as it is expected that the matter would be resolved in the interest of all, it is evident that (mis)communication was taken to the point where it was felt -- real or perceived -- that one has been violated because of one’s gender and lifestyle choice.

The battle to discriminate against women who choose to work and have children, be they single or married, was won in the 1960s. This matter should never again be litigated. And in this era, where choice in pregnancy apparel exists, the traditional loose fitting versus the contemporary closer-fitting,

Social Protection Ministry always acts in interest of workers Dear Editor,

THE Ministry of Social Protection (MSP), and more particularly the Minister within the MSP, is concerned about the Stabroek News’ editorial of Friday, 2nd September, 2016, appearing under the caption “Workplace Safety”.

The editorial begins by highlighting that incidents of workplace safety in Guyana have been an issue for a number of years. Such a statement is indisputable, but what are disputable are several unfounded assertions and allegations.

For example, reference was made to “the recent Commission of Inquiry into mining deaths, which found that during a fifteen (15)-month period there had been twenty-eight (28) deaths, mostly coming from pitfalls’ cave-in.”

That statement seems to be at variance with the findings of what can be termed the Dr. Grantley Walrond Committee of Inquiry into Mining Pit Collapses, which found that twenty-five (25) deaths were recorded in sixteen (16) accidents during the twelve (12)-month period of June 2014 to June 2015.

The said report, among other things, found that “there is a lax culture of safety in Guyana. It is a culture which the MSP has inherited, and has been vigorously confronting daily since May 2015.

This editorial has evidently ignored the existence of the ‘lax safety culture’, and wasted no time in unjustifiably accusing the Honourable Minister within the MSP for the current poor state of occupational health and safety at the national level.

It is most unfortunate that the architects of that editorial did not take the time to seek the truth from the relevant source. Had they so done, they would have found the following: 1. Minister Scott has inherited a broken and dysfunctional system of workplace safety and health.

2. He has developed strategies designed to correct the exhibited deficiencies.

The editor has relied on parliamentary records in a vain attempt to discredit the Honourable Minister; but had he taken the time to examine the Minister’s 2015 budget presentation, he would have noticed a segment of his remedial strategy outlined therein.

The editorial is considered to be one of the most important sections of any newspaper, and it is therefore expected

that care, professionalism, and moral rectitude would be core principles embraced in its creation. That was hardly the case with the editorial under focus at this time.

Surely, there must have been blatant disregard for the time-honoured ethics pertaining to the crafting of an editorial.

The fact that reference was made to the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 2007 is clear manifestation of recklessness, which could be quite disturbing once revealed. As far as the MSP is aware, the Occupational Safety and Health Act is of 1997 vintage, or Chapter 99:10, and not of 2007.

In furtherance of a less-than-honourable agenda, the thoughts of a former Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH) were marshalled; but what needs highlighting is that it was Minister Scott who recently appointed the NACOSH, which had not functioned for at least the last three (3) years.

It is true that Section 23 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act provides for establishment of joint workplace safety and health committees, but the Law does not place responsibility for establishment of those committees within the domain of the MSP, as the editorial had implied.

However, in interest of the health and safety of workers and managers alike, the MSP has, on a weekly basis, been assisting employers in this regard.

Towards that end, Minister Scott and his team of technical officers have rolled out a comprehensive programme targeting a total of sixty-two (62) employers, who are being encouraged to partner with the MSP in promoting Occupational Safety and Health in their immediate environs.

The MSP wishes to arrest the inaccuracy of the editorial when it asserted that the target group of that programme is “companies that have reported workplace accidents in the past.” Again, if those responsible for the editorial had taken the time to exercise caution and had contacted the MSP, they would have been told that the target group does not exclusively comprise employers who had reported accidents in the past.

Moreover, the initiative is not a one-off exercise, but is intended to be ongoing.

It is certainly an initiative birthed by Minister Scott, and anyone interested in truth, accuracy, and enhancement of professionalism would have sought

such should also be respecting of the individual’s choice; and that choice should be within the ambit of what constitutes appropriate dress code for the staff.

In the instance of Mrs. Archibald-Hawke, where it has been alleged that on her Facebook page she had posted some views that were offensive to another colleague, this requires careful thought and consideration that while freedom of speech is a fundamental right, it carries corresponding responsibility, and it ought not to violate legality. From a cultural standpoint, where the expressed view may be deemed offensive, though a Facebook is one’s private space, in our society, where ethical conduct is more observed in the breach, it may require bringing all the experiences to bear in dealing with a matter of such a nature.

Minister Scott should be commended, rather than criticized. Since assumption of his present portfolio, he has taken every possible step to restore confidence in the MSP. Irrespective of the utterances of naysayers, he has taken performance of the MSP to where reports containing findings and recommendations of fatal accidents, serious accidents and other investigations are being handed over to the relevant parties in presence of the media. For the first time in the history of the Labour Department, all industrial accidents with fatal consequences are being investigated with a degree of nimbleness never before witnessed.

To date, investigations of all fatalities and serious accidents have been completed, or are close to completion.

The only fatal accident investigation which is outstanding relates to that which recently occurred at Puruni, in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni Region. Investigation of that accident is deemed a work in progress, which will be concluded as soon as the necessary data are gathered and interviews are conducted.

The only incomplete non-fatal accident investigation pertains to an accident at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle, involving an aircraft belonging to Roraima Airways. Completion of that investigation is being hindered by the unavailability of a main witness for more than two (2) months now; and in spite of the challenges being encountered, the MSP is determined to leave no stone unturned in its investigation.

The allegation that Ministers Lawrence and Scott are often unavailable to speak to the press on a number of labour matters is without substance, and constitutes a deliberate attempt to malign them. The MSP records would show that both ministers operate within the framework of an open-door policy, and are always available to interact with the media. On several occasions, the media were invited to the offices of the ministers; and the ministers have voluntarily offered their official phone numbers and contact details to all media operatives.

Such goes viral, but are often resolved amicably.

One hazard of the Information Age is that such occurrences are normal; and though they may result in bruised egos and hurt relationships, what is never to be lost sight of is the sphere within which the information originates, its legality, and the respect for free speech.

Residents want Port Mourant NDC dissolved ‒ dissatisfied with level of service

By Nafeeza Yahya EAST BERBICE residents of Port Mourant and contiguous communities are calling on Central Government to look into the operations of the Port Mourant/Johns Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), as they are dissatisfied with the level of service delivered by the entity.

Their frustrations stem from several issues, with some residents calling for a new body to govern the NDC. Residents accuse the NDC of failing in its duties; they say that garbage has overtaken the Babu Jaan Cemetery and is daily moving closer towards the residential area.

When this publication visited the area, garbage and old appliances were strewn about for hundreds of metres, going all the way into the cemetery.

According to Suresh Sugrim, President of the New Jersey Araya Samaj Humanitarian Mission, whose local

headquarters is within close proximity to the cemetery, he had made several complaints to the NDC, but nothing was done. He said the area was cleaned once before, but people are still dumping garbage, as they do not have any alternative to dumping.

“I have spoken to the NDC on several occasions, and even offered a possible solution; but that, too, has fallen on deaf ears… It is sad enough when you bring your loved ones to be cremated, but then you have to contend with the stench of dead animals and see garbage everywhere. The authorities need to get this situation under control soon, as it is already a health hazard, and will get worse,” Sugrim declared.

Another resident, Pooran Singh, said the area is cleaned only when the memorial service for the late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan is being held; thereafter, the NDC pays no attention to the area.

“Instead of calling this the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Site,

it should be called the Cheddi Jagan Dumpsite, as that is what it is. How embarrassing!” Singh lamented.

As we moved from the cemetery, a group of residents stopped this reporter and took us to the main entrance into the housing scheme, where they pointed to a pothole in the middle of the road. According to Mahendra Dass, the pothole, measuring 6 feet square by four feet deep, has been there for over six months, and several cars have been damaged as they drove into the hole during the nights.

“This crater has been here for over six months now, and the NDC is doing nothing about it. People who drive here in the nights fall into the hole and damage their vehicles. The NDC does not care about the welfare of its residents; and they must be held accountable, as we are tax paying residents that expect and demand service from them,” he said.

Another area of concern is the Port Mourant Market.

Residents are complaining about the stench emanating from the market since Saturday last, and are calling on NDC staffers to do their jobs and clean the market. They say this is not the first time the market has been emanating a stench.

Pamila Jaijairam, a teacher at a nearby school who lives in the market street, said she is frustrated with the performance of the NDC, as this is not the first time its staffers have failed to clean the market after Saturday’s

activities. She is of the view that the NDC believes the managing of the market is Rocket Science.

“My doors and windows are closed and I can still smell that horrible odour from all the fish guts, head, and fish left behind by vendors. Tomorrow all the school children will have to walk on fish guts and maggots, and inhale the horrible odour,” Jaijairam said. She, too, is calling on Central Government to look into the affairs of the NDC. According to another frustrated resident, Dauren Deonarine, the situation at the market has gotten worse since the new NDC management took office, and he is calling on the Ministry of Communities to step in and do something.

Since the newly elected/selected council took the reins of the NDC, the area (has been) in a terrible state, with garbage all over; and the scent is hitting us even as we have a sealed house. As soon as we open the door to exit, it’s like walking into a septic tank with the stench. When this happened once prior, NIS had to close the local office for a day because of the scent and garbage all over.”

The Port Mourant/ Johns NDC, one of the larger NDCs in East Berbice, has come in for a lot of negative remarks lately from residents and vendors who ply their trade at the Port Mourant Market. Efforts to contact Imran Ally, the chairman of the NDC, for a comment were unsuccessful.

“First they came…”

By Akola Thompson I DIDN’T know what to think when I heard that an NCN employee had been told she could no longer read the news because she was pregnant and unmarried. I did not know what to think because I was existing between two planes -- one of disillusionment and one of disbelief.

Surely, I thought, there must be some other reason why she was pulled from the news; so I waited for follow-ups, asked questions, and when I realized that the original story I heard was not very far from the truth, I began to feel something akin to anger.

Here was an experienced reporter who, for eight years, had worked past many of the barriers existing not only in the media, but also in the workforce as a whole. She has proven that she could do her job even when pregnant, as was seen in 2011; but now, under the directives of new CEO Lennox Cornette, management told her she would no longer be on air, as it did not provide a good image for the newscast; and then she was told that the cameraman would zoom in on her face, so that her belly wouldn’t show. Some of my first thoughts were: who died and made this signature-forger the authority on morality? And why is he being allowed to create a

culture of fear and sexism in a Government agency?

With gender roles constantly under redefinition, men belonging to a certain class of accustomed power, I believe, continue to see their influence and institutions challenged; so, crippled by the lack of say over a woman’s life, they choose to voice their disapproval under the guise of policy and company images, to feel as if they’re still in charge.

However, as much as I would like to lay all blame at the feet of Cornette, this occurrence points to a much larger issue of the too popular culture of policing women’s bodies and lives. It points to a common violation of women’s rights in the workplace, and the barriers that are still placed on us -- whether we are up to a task or not -- merely because we are women.

What I did find disconcerting, however, was the fact that several women were also implicit in carrying out an extremely unprofessional and sexist directive. Then there were those who violently denied that any such thing had happened, going remarkably silent in the wake of Natasha’s release.

NCN, of course after Natasha’s release, sent out one of their own, stating that she "was not removed from anchoring because of her expectant condition or marital status, as is erroneously being pedalled."

The fact that they did not take the opportunity to give the reason why she was really pulled from the air shows that management not only violates workers’ rights, but is also comprised of cowards.

Those who believe that the barriers women face trying to work their way up no longer exist, and jocularly disregard it as a “1950s issue”, would do good to realize that while it cannot easily be seen, these barriers remain, and are often pervasive and very insidious. As we’ve seen with NCN, this practice can come in many forms, such as suspending women for having opinions -- as is the case with Jocelle Archibald-Hawke, or demoting women who become pregnant.

It truly is confusing why NCN has seemingly become more concerned with upkeeping moral purity rather than focusing on its real responsibilities.

Also, what is the role of an HR Department if NCN management can, in good conscience, violate a worker’s rights? Does NCN even have an HR Department? What do its policies look like? Are no enlightened minds working in HR? I find it very sad that, with our exemplary gender equality legal framework, women’s rights are still being trampled upon by self-appointed purveyors of the law, and we are still falling victim to a system designed to oppress us.

Yesterday, a protest was held in front of NCN in solidarity with Natasha and Jocelle. Of all the protests of which I have been a part, this one was by far the most well attended and covered; and while it may be that the media came out to support one of their own, I was happy to see the tremendous part played by everyone.

It is time we all learn to not stand silent on the sidelines, because whether we realize it or not, we are complicit in wrongdoings in our silence. Silence not only encourages such violations against women, but also perpetuates the sexism and gender inequality we have spent decades fighting against.

If the ruling administration is really serious about women’s rights, it would not waste time in sanctioning Cornette for the questionable decisions he has made since being employed.

Place him on a one-month suspension without pay; better yet, get someone better qualified and ethical to take his place.

NCN unmoved on sports editor’s suspension MANAGEMENT of the National Communications Network (NCN) has refused to budge on its decision to suspend Sports Editor, Jocelle Archibald-Hawke, saying that the employee has had a history of bad behaviour.

But the Guyana Press Association (GPA) is insisting that the decision was harsh and that the body will seek out every possible avenue to have it reversed.

Archibald-Hawke came under fire from NCN after heaping scorn on one of her colleagues, who had questioned President David Granger on his television show The Public Interest about “Pokemon Go”. She was made to apologise, but her apology did not find fa-

vour with NCN and she was suspended for one month without pay.

GPA met with management of NCN on Tuesday after it had requested a formal meeting on Saturday with the Chief Executive Officer, Lennox Cornette.

In a statement GPA said it had received reports that: Archibald-Hawke was suspended on August 31, 2016 for a period of one month, without pay, over comments she made against a colleague on Facebook.

The GPA was represented at the meeting by President Neil Marks, Secretary Iva Wharton, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Fareeza Haniff and Executive Member Nazima Raghubir.

NCN was represented by

its CEO Lennox Cornette, Human Resources Manager Tishika De Costa and Programme Manager Ron Robinson.

The GPA said that at the meeting it urged Mr Cornette and his executives to immediately rescind the suspension of Archibald-Hawke on the following grounds: 1.

Archibald-Hawke was never reprimanded by the company over her comments on social media; 2. No Social Media Policy exists at NCN from which any sanction can be imposed against staff; 3.

NCN took disciplinary action on the ground that the apology, which was demanded of her by management was not to the satisfaction of the aggrieved employee in question rather than to management’s

NCN Sports Editor, Jocelle Archibald-Hawke satisfaction; 4. Management did not at any time seek to engage Mrs Archibald-Hawke and the aggrieved employee, together, to discuss the issue and resolve it in an amicable

manner.

According to the GPA statement Mr Cornette argued that the action taken against Archibald-Hawke was not only because of what she said about a colleague on Facebook, but about previous infractions against management, many of which are not rooted in management directives or policy at NCN. The GPA, on the other hand said it argued that the sole reason given for Mrs Archibald-Hawke’s suspension was the issue of her comments on Facebook. “We maintained that the suspension was harsh and need to be rescinded.”

The association said the CEO gave no undertaking to review the decision, but noted the GPA’s demand.

“It is useful to note that despite the CEO’s claims of previous infractions by Mrs Archibald-Hawke, it was only about a month ago the Human Resources Department approved her gratuity in full, indicating no issues with her performance on the job. THE GPA is left to no other conclusion than that the management of NCN is instituting willy-nilly sanctions against employees without these being grounded on any statement of management directive or policy. The GPA therefore urge that this practice be discontinued forthwith. The GPA will be pursuing all avenues possible to have the suspension against Mrs Archibald-Hawke rescinded,” the statement read.

Death of Port Kaituma dredge owner…

Cops find bag of ammo in Father held, DPP advice being Angoy’s Avenue sought, assailant still at large

POLICE in Berbice on Monday unearthed a bag containing 18 rounds of live ammunition, the Guyana Police said in a release.

According to information, a Police Constable who was on duty working in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, while in the vicinity of Caracas Dam and Mai Mai Dam found a burgundy bag and upon checking found the ammunition concealed in the bag.

The Police have since launched an investigation.

POLICE prosecutors are currently seeking advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on whether to charge a miner who restrained a dredge owner for his son to chop him to death in Port Kaituma, Region One Friday last.

The son is presently at large and is wanted. The file was sent to the DPP chambers on Tuesday. The 32-year-old father of four was identified as Ryan English, a dredge owner, of Port Kaituma who died Sunday while undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

A Post Mortem examination performed on the remains Monday revealed that the man died from haemorrhage due to multiple cut wounds.

Police said the assailant and the decease, who previously had disagreements and misunderstanding were having a drink and taunting each other. This resulted in English being attacked and chopped to the head after the assailant became offended.

Further, police noted that

During this time the father accosted English and allowed his son to severely chop the man about the body. He was taken by members of the camp to the Port Kaituma Hospital and transferred to

the Georgetown Public Hospital. The father remained at his camp and was taken into police custody while his son, who fled is presently being hunted by the police.

The father and son are from Kaituma and operate a dredge in white creek North West District.

The wife of the deceased, who spoke to this publication, stated that she is expecting justice for her husband’s killing. She stated that her spouse was found lying at his attacker’s camp surrounded in blood and someone from a nearby mining camp stole four ounces of gold from his pockets.

Police said that a suspect was taken into custody but later release after a search was done at his home and nothing was found.

Ramjattan backs covert operation to catch ‘rogue cops’ PUBLIC Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan says he supports any covert operation to catch policemen involved in illegal activities.

His comments come days after the Acting Police Chief, David Ramnarine has sounded the warning against ranks who might be bent on committing crimes.

Ramnarine has recently railed against police ranks’ poor attitude toward the public, their request for bribes, unauthorised roadblocks and illegal traffic stops among others. Ramjattan said he is not only in support of the police hierarchy’s revived stance against bad policing, but it was a direct instruction coming from his office.

Ramjattan said that his office has received numerous complaints against the police, while his ministerial colleagues have also spoken to him about police treatment toward members of their respective constituents. “…it was an instruction coming out of the Ministry (Public Security) to them (police heads). They are the ones with the expertise and should be ensuring the policy that has always been there is followed.”

The minister said the message has been clearly conveyed to the Police Commissioner the need to ensure the “assertiveness” of senior police officers, “to make it known that rogue police in the force is not something that will be promoted.”

Ramjattan noted however that it has proven difficult to pick out the seemingly bad eggs in the local enforcement arm since victims of bad policing are reluctant to assist in fingering culprits. “We have told people with statements to come forward, but they are not. We receive complaints and we ask people to wear body cameras to catch police officers when they are collecting bribes, but they

He has spoken extensively about which ranks can hold road blocks and how it must be done and which ranks are authorised to stop traffic on official police business.

Ramnarine has spoken about collecting bribes and demanding money from the public. He had called this act, “disgusting, shameful and humiliating.” The Assistant Commissioner also spoke about the police

bold and speak out against injustices met out to them by the police.

It was recently mentioned by Ramnarine that it is not an offence for citizens to photograph or video po-

lice ranks, especially while on public duties. Citizens have been encouraged in the past to gather as much evidence possible to make their case clear, should they feel aggrieved by any police

ranks. This includes taking the names of police’s ranks that are mandated to wear their name badges, the police vehicle number and photo and video evidence if possible.

Natasha Smith returns to NCN anchoring chair …GPA urges OPM intervention in operations

THE National Communications Network (NCN) has rescinded a decision to drop Natasha Smith as one of its anchors because of her pregnancy. This follows a meeting on Tuesday with

the Guyana Press Association, which has called for the intervention of the Chairman and Board of Directors of NCN, as well as the Office of the Prime Minister, to look into the

operations of NCN. In a statement issued after the meeting, the GPA said that CEO of NCN, Lennox Cornette, denied he had at any time passed a directive that Ms. Smith should

be replaced as the anchor of the NCN evening news programme because of her pregnancy.

However, the GPA said it managed to secure a copy of the minutes of the August 8, 2016 management meeting.

“The discussion centered on the production of a news montage. The minutes read thus: “With regards to this, the CEO stated that the anchor and wardrobe should coincide with the montage. However, given the present condition of Ms. Natasha Smith, the CEO asked that a tight shot be done to remedy the view….”

According to the GPA, following that discussion, the CEO recommended that Ms. Smith be replaced.

“All the senior executives of NCN that the GPA has spoken with us have said they understood Mr. Cornette to be speaking of Ms. Smith’s pregnancy, and that decision was communicated to her. As noted above, Mr. Cornette denied that he issued any such directive. As such, the GPA was able to secure the CEO’s undertaking to have Ms. Smith returned to the anchor chair with immediate effect.”

The GPA said that, following its meeting, Ms. Smith indicated that the Human Resources Manager approached her and apologised, and asked her to return to anchoring. “Ms. Smith has indicated to the GPA that she

is ready to do so.”

The GPA congratulated Ms. Smith for bringing the

NCN Anchor, Natasha Smith matter to the association, and has called on all members of the media to keep their association abreast of poor industrial relations’ practices at their places of work, and not only to be vigilant against such acts in other workplaces.

“As the state broadcaster, which is heavily funded by tax payers, NCN has an obligation to uphold the highest tenets of industrial relations’ practices, including providing equal opportunity and ensuring freedom from harassment, intimidation and discrimination. By way of this statement, the GPA

hereby issues a call for the intervention of the Chairman and Board of Directors of NCN and the Office of the Prime Minister to look into the operations of NCN,” the GPA statement ended.

In a statement of her own on Monday, Ms. Smith said: “I have been employed by the National Communications Network for more than eight years, serving six years in the News and Current Affairs Department, (and I am) now in my second year as an Announcer/Producer in the Production Department. I have anchored the news for the past eight years. This is my second pregnancy while being anchor. In 2011, I was pregnant with twins and there was never any issue with regards to my anchoring or attire, nor any directive to cameramen to shoot from my breast upwards.”

She also said that she felt hurt and angry, “not for myself, but for my child, (whom) I consider a blessing. Given the fact that I have to hide a part of by body makes him (the baby) seem like something unwanted or to be ashamed of. I likened the situation to one where I took a picture with my child and had to Photoshop him out of the picture. I was offended and I contacted my union representative. We then sought a meeting with the Human Resources Manager.”

$60M bridge to link Lethem, Tabatinga MAYOR of Lethem Town, Carlton Beckles explained that currently there is one major road that caters for both ingress and egress in Tabatinga. Beckles noted that the new structure will not only bridge the gap between the housing scheme and Lethem, but will also ease traffic congestion. The bridge is expected to be completed by year-end, and will cost $60M. The Mayor said that it is visualised that in years to come, the population of Lethem and its surrounding areas will increase, and traffic congestion will become an issue. “…

On forward planning there should be another entrance, because Lethem is developing and there is a lot of vehicles traversing and there will be years to come that there will be traffic jams… so you will not only have one entrance coming out of Tabatinga, we would have another entrance,” Beckles told the Government Information Agency (GINA).

This bridge, he noted, is just one of several projects to prepare for the major developments in the town. Lethem has two branches of commercial banks, Republic Bank and Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI). It has an upgraded airstrip, and there are regular flights to and from the border town. Persons can also travel to the town which is close to Brazil by bus, through the Linden –Lethem road.

Located in Central Rupununi, Tabatinga was established and further developed by the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) in 2003. This community is home to over 1000 people.

Through government’s support, Tabatinga has benefitted from major infrastructural development, including roads and electricity. Recently, the Guyana Water Inc., (GWI) expanded the water services in the scheme with the refurbishing of elevated storage tanks. The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) has also opened tenders for the construction of a new nursery school and teachers’ quarters in the community.

PYO turns 64 THE Progressive Youth Organisation of Guyana (PYO) on Tuesday celebrated its 64th Anniversary since its establishment on September 6, 1952.

In a release the PYO said it reflected on the struggles and sacrifices made by many of its young leaders in the fight for social justice and democracy in Guyana over the past few decades. “It also

expressed its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the scores of youth organisaitons and pressure groups that worked tirelessly side-by-side the PYO to ensure that young people were part of the country’s decision- making process at every level and the general political process.”

In addition, the PYO congratulated the Peoples Progressive Party Civic on its

Leguan residents clean up, rebuild after freak storm

ELECTRICITY has returned to the island of Leguan after a freak storm Sunday last damaged several homes resulting in zinc

sheets cutting the power lines and damaging a transformer.

The doctor said zinc sheets were ripped off of four houses and one roof top was completed torn off. This house which was not occupied is owned by an overseas-based Guyanese who has already been contacted about the damage. Narine explained that many persons with assistance from the community began rebuilding without any assistance from the authorities. “Persons on the island don’t have insurance coverage so they are helping themselves.”

According to reports, the storm last Sunday hit the island before 16:00hrs with thunder, heavy rains and lightening with strong winds, which ripped off the roofs of several buildings and downed several large trees in the area. Some persons received minor injuries.

GuyOil bursary...

The Blind rewarded for self-confidence OWNER of Heaven’s Care daycare for the elderly, Ms. Genevieve McDonald, has rewarded with trophies and medals students of the Guyana Society for the Blind (GSB) who recently participated in the Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC).This was done in a bid to boost their self-confidence and urge others to come forward and do likewise.

Originally from Region 7, Cuyuni/ Mazaruni, McDonald is a professional geriatric nurse who works with those with disabilities at the GSB. Her motivation to help sprang from the moment her father, Mr. Godfrey McDonald, became visually impaired.

She has been working with the GSB for the past five years, but started this initiative last year, and plans to make it an annual event.

“I give trophies, medals, etc. to students (and) the teachers. I don’t believe in excluding anyone, so everyone who participated gets

something,” McDonald told the Chronicle recently in an invited comment at the GSB. The students are also treated to a snack by McDonald, who believes that those with disabilities should not be discouraged from coming forward and showing their skills.

President of the Society, Mr. Cecil Morris, similarly commented that those with

disabilities should come on board and get themselves equipped to deal with the rigours of life.

“We feel that every person that has a visual problem can still make a contribution to the development of this country, and we would really love to see people put themselves in that position and take their rightful place in society,” Morris stated.

Executive member of the Society, Mr. Ganesh Singh, told the Chronicle the GSB is grateful to Heaven’s Care daycare for rewarding the students’ hard work. “Receiving a trophy and medal is very motivating to persons, and (the trophy is) something they can always keep,” he said.

The students worked hard, and I am really proud of the achievements they have made,” she said.

By Michel Outridge BOTH present and continuing students, who are children of employees of the Guyana Oil Company (GuyOil) were awarded for their outstanding academic performance at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) exams last Friday.

The presentation ceremony was held at the Kitty Service Station Boardroom in the presence of the board of directors, senior managers and general employees.

In remarks, Acting Managing Director, Reginald Bhagwandin said many years ago he had been the beneficiary of a similar bursary award. As such, he recognised the need for it to continue as an encouragement for students to strive for higher education.

He expressed congratulations to the students and encouraged their parents to continue to guide their children as it was the building block in their life even as they are about to enter high school and the world of work.

Bhagwandin also stressed the need for students to put aside their electronic gadgets sometimes and focus on their studies.

Giving an overview of the bursary award was Human Resource Manager, Ronley Kendall. He said the GuyOil Bursary Award started in 1983 and was later renamed in 1997 with the aim of encouraging children of staffers to attain high grades.

Kendall explained that students who maintained 45% to 65% grade were awarded with a certificate each, token of school supplies and the high achievers were given a trophy and cash incentive.

He pointed out that GuyOil would continue to pledge its support to the students but urged the group to use their

Carberry spoke of the distractions of television in the home and encouraged the students to ignore the images and instead inculcate the habit of reading everyday, which broaden one’s vocabulary

and comprehension reach.

The top student was Naresh Mahadeo, who gained 527 marks at CXC and for his sterling academic performance he was given a certificate, a trophy, cash incentive and school supplies.

City Hall shuts down vending at Bourda ‒ to meet with vendors on way forward

By Shirley Thomas TEMPERS flared yesterday when, without warning, Town Clerk, Royston King and his security officers descended on fruit and greens vendors plying their trade along Robb Street, between Alexander and Bourda Streets, and announced that “as of now” they would have to cease vending there, until further notice.

He did not say why, nor did he say what he meant by ‘until further notice’, but according to vendors, the order was delivered around

09:30hrs, following which constabulary ranks quickly cordoned off the area with steel barriers, thereby signalling that it was now off limits to them.

The deed having been done, with the expectation that the order will be complied with lest there be consequences, King and his team reportedly left without entertaining any questions or comments from the bemused vendors.

Those affected by the order usually ply their wares from 17:00 hrs until twilight on a daily basis, and have been doing so for years,

bringing in assured and much needed revenue to the Council.

They travel from as far as Berbice, Parika, and agricultural villages along the East Coast to sell primarily fruits and vegetables in order to eke out a living.

WHAT NEXT As one vendor observed, “So they stop we from selling, and that looks like forever. We have expenses like anyone else, so what are we to do? How are we to live?”

Reports are that when the Town Clerk arrived at the scene yesterday and gave the order, vendors had already begun paying up their fees, so many were able to show their receipts to the media for payments they’d made.

Now left to ponder their next move, some vendors who sell from their trucks have resorted to parking along Alexander Street to tray and see if they could catch their hand in the meantime. At least one man told of being accosted and charged for parking there.

He was ordered to appear in Court on September 15. He was also able to produce a bill for the $11,000 he had already paid to Council for

landing and vending fees.

Pushed to the limit, the irate vendors summoned the media and began openly making their concerns known. They also contacted the President of the Guyana Market Vendors Union, Eon Andrews.

Deputy Mayor, Sherod Duncan, now Acting Mayor in the absence of Mayor Patricia Chase-Green, visited the scene and expressed shock, stating that he was not informed about the move.

MIND-BOGGLING Meanwhile, the vendors’ produce, which are all perishable, remained heaped on trucks in the sun throughout the day.

Vendors are at pains to understand why the Council would make such a decision to stop them from vending when they are the life blood of the Municipality’s revenue.

“It’s amazing the amount of money Council makes from the collection of vending and landing fees from us vendors,” one woman said, adding: “Those of us vending in this area are all mature people and never give them trouble. What is all this illwill and advantage about?

Is it a vendetta they have against us?”

Said another, “They are treating us with gross disrespect, and we are calling for a stop to be put to this, because, after all, we are people’s husbands, wives and mothers, and even grandparents and so we demand to be treated with respect.”

NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS City Hall has since issued a statement saying the reason it took the stand it did yesterday is because it has been in receipt of numerous complaints about the deplorable condition in which vendors leave the area at the end of the business day.

Said the City in its missive: “This morning at around 08:30hrs, the Town Clerk, the Chief Constable and a team of City officers visited a number of sections in the city to have a firsthand look at the situation around Municipal Market areas and other points where persons are operating businesses.”

Detailing what the team found during the course of their visit yesterday, City Hall said: “The situation at the corner of Robb and Alexander Streets, in front of ‘Mike’s Pharmacy’ was very ugly, with heaps of garbage almost at the entrance of that pharmacy, dumped there by

wholesalers and retailers last evening. This is a serious problem, which requires urgent attention.”

Noting that vendors have been warned time and again about dumping their waste on the roadways or in front of legitimate businesses, City Hall said: “They were advised by the Chief Constable and Revenue Collectors to deposit their waste in the receptacles provided for them on Orange Walk. However, they continue to dump the waste, particularly at nights, and leave with their winnings to return the next day to sell.”

It said that as a result of its findings, “the area between Alexander and Bourda Streets has been closed off to all vending activities, with immediate effect, to allow the area to be sanitised, and to facilitate a meeting between Council and the vendors operating there.”

The purpose of the meeting, City Hall said, “is to enforce compliance in the manner in which vendors dispose of their waste, and to encourage acceptance of their responsibility to keep that entire area clean and tidy at all times.”

It said, in closing, that what is being done is in the best interest of all parties.

MONEY CHANGER SHOT, ROBBED POLICE were on Tuesday reviewing surveillance footage from cameras mounted on the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) building in an effort to identify the gunman, who shot, injured and robbed an America Street money changer of an undisclosed amount of cash.

The licensed firearm holder has been identified as Mahendra Deonarine of Lot B, Plantain Walk Public Road, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara. Sleuths disclosed that footage revealed that the shooter was wearing a long-sleeved shirt and they are trying to enlarge the image to get a closer look at

the suspect in hope of locating him.

Meanwhile, Deonarine is said to be in a stable condition after he underwent a surgical operation at a private hospital. He was picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the private institution based on his request.

At downtown Georgetown when the incident happened people who were in the vicinity recalled hearing a gunshot and scampered for cover since they were unsure of what was happening. It was when they saw the money changer fell to the ground that they went to his aid.

According to police in ‘A’ Division, Deonarine had

just disembarked a speed boat plying the Vreed-enHoop to Georgetown Ferry Stelling route when he was accosted by a gunman. This happened at about 09:50 hrs. in front of the Georgetown Ferry Stelling, while the businessman was making his way to America Street, where his business is located.

Police told the Guyana Chronicle that the robber walked up to Deonarine and shot him once to the abdomen after which he went through his pockets and relieved him of an undisclosed amount of money when he slumped to the ground.

Detectives said that

based on information received so far, it would appear that the incident is a ‘hit’ gone wrong and movements of the money changer was well orchestrated.

A visit to Deonarine’s home did not yield much since no one was there, but when contacted by telephone relatives of the injured man refused to speak to this newspaper saying that they were busy.

Police also said that the relatives were uncooperative with lawmen and as such it is not known whether Deonarine’s gun was taken during the armed robbery. (Michel Outridge)

‘Something is not right’ … Freddie Kissoon reacts to death of witness

N E W S PA P E R c o l u m nist and political scientist Freddie Kissoon has said he is concerned about the killing of a key witness in the trial of the ‘faeces-throwing incident’ involving him and three known PPP activists.

Forty–year–old Osmond Griffith of Durban Backlands, Georgetown was struck down by a speeding car while urinating on the Industry Railway Embankment early on Friday morning; and Police ‘C’ Division Commander Paul Williams has confirmed to the Guyana Chronicle that Griffith had been a key witness in the ongoing ‘Freddie Kissoon faeces-throwing trial’ being heard in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, and had been slated

to testify before Magistrate Judy Latchman.

The Commander explained that Griffith and his friend, driver of motor car PJJ 8028, had left the usual “Thursday night Line Top Lime” at Plaisance at about 1:00hr, and as the vehicle was nearing the Industry Road, Griffith had asked that the car be stopped so he could urinate. While relieving himself at the side of the road, a speeding and seemingly out-of-control hire car, HC 4399, reportedly struck down Griffith, who early Friday morning succumbed to the severe injuries he had sustained. The car in which Griffith was travelling was reportedly proceeding west along the Plaisance Railway Embankment, and the taxi was heading in that direc-

A breathalyser test done on the taxi driver revealed that his alcohol consumption was above the prescribed limit, and he has since been charged and arraigned before the Sparendaam Magistrate.

Dead: Osmond Griffith This newspaper understands that the taxi driver had reportedly told the police that he was also liming at the “Line Top”, and had been hired by two persons, one of whom he claimed had placed a gun to his head; and when he turned to look at the gunman, he lost control of the car and struck down Griffith.

Given that Griffith had been a key witness in the Kissoon trial, the Commander said, the police would conduct a thorough investigation into the accident, in order to clarify whether foul play had been involved.

Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle on Tuesday, Kissoon said he is not afraid, but is taking the necessary precaution in light of what has happened to Griffith.

Kissoon disclosed that he is not in receipt of any evidence, which would suggest that something sinister is going on; but he said that from news reports he feels “something is not right.”

Kissoon said he remains unrepresented in the case, since he has to get approval from the Director of Public

Prosecutions (DPP) to seek the services of an attorney.

He explained that he feels the police are since operating more independently, (following the change of government), and he trusts that justice would prevail in the matter.

Ex-Office of the President (OP) Press Liaison Officer Kwame McCoy, PPP activists Jason Abdulla and former policeman Sean Hinds are currently facing charges of assault. They have each been released on $100,000 bail. The men allegedly threw fecal matter in Kissoon’s face when he emerged from the Nigel’s Supermarket in Robb Street on May 24, 2010.

Man admits snatch after Scotia Bank withdrawal A 27-YEAR-OLD man was on Tuesday sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment after he admitted to the offence of robbery.

Orlando Klass of Charlotte Street did not waste the court’s time when he appeared before City Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Klass admitted to the charge which stated that on September 2, 2016 at Wellington Street, Georgetown he robbed Denise Griffith of $75,000.

The prosecution facts stated that on the day in question Griffith had exited Scotia Bank with the money in her hand that she had withdrawn from the bank. The prosecutor further stated that a member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) observed what had transpired and gave chases after Klass. The GDF member caught up with Klass and when a search was conducted the money was found in Klass’ pocket.

Magistrate Bess sentenced Klass to 18 months’ jail based on the facts that he had not wasted the court’s time but instead admitted to the offence. It was also his first offence.

South Africa pick Phehlukwayo for Australia ODIs UNCAPPED fast bowler Andile Phehlukwayo has been named in the South Africa squad which will host Australia for five ODIs from September 30.

Captain AB de Villiers, who missed South Africa's last series - the Tests against New Zealand - due to an elbow injury, is back. The world's No. 1 bowler in Test cricket, Dale Steyn, also returns to the 50-overs format after being rested for South Africa's previous ODI assignment, the tri-series against West Indies and Australia in the Caribbean.

Fast bowler Morne Morkel and batsman Rilee Rossouw, who hurt his shoulder during that tri-series, were not considered for selection due to injury.

Morkel had injured himself during the Caribbean Premier League. While Steyn's presence covers for the absence of Morkel, David Miller was brought in to replace Rossouw.

in the 48th minute with a shot from the top of the box 15 minutes into the second session. Trevor Jones increased the lead further for the lawmen with a header into the left corner of the opposition’s net.

Rawle Gittens of Federal Winners Connection was shown the red card in the 72nd minute for using abusive language towards the referee, reducing his team to 10 players. However, the Linden side were able to pull one back through a Keon Sears’ 88th minute goal from the penalty spot.

Police will meet Western Tigers in the final on Sunday, while on the same day, Federal Winners Connection will battle with Ann’s Grove in the third-place playoff.

The venue for the double-header is yet to be decided.

Leading into the five matches against Australia, South Africa are scheduled to play a one-off ODI against Ireland on September 25.

CSA named the squad for that match as well, comprising 13 players. Batsman Temba Bavuma, who has played 11 Tests but is yet to debut in ODIs, and the uncapped Dwaine Pretorius are the new faces in that squad. Of the players named for the Australia series, Kyle Abbott, Hashim Amla, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi and Steyn were not named for the Ireland

game.

Serena beats Shvedova to set new Grand Slam record of 308 wins WORLD number one Serena Williams set a new Grand Slam record of 308 victories with a win over Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan at the US Open in New York.

Kerber, Monfils through to US Open semi-finals GERMAN second seed Angelique Kerber reached the semi-finals of the US Open with a comprehensive straight-sets win over Italian Roberta Vinci.

Kerber, 29, defeated the 2015 finalist 7-5, 6-0 and will next face Caroline Wozniacki or Anastasija Sevastova.

In the men's draw, France's Gael Monfils outplayed compatriot Lucas Pouille in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win.

Fit-again Neesham returns for India tour (REUTERS) - All-rounder James Neesham has returned to the New Zealand Test squad for their threeTest tour of India.

"Jimmy has put in a lot of work to make sure he is physically ready for a return to

France frustrated by well-organised Belarus

FRANCE enjoyed most of the ball and had far more shots but they could not find a way past Belarus, as their opening qualification game for the World Cup ended 0-0.

The Euro 2016 finalists fielded a much-changed back five from their clash against Portugal, but the midfield and the attack were mostly the same, with plenty of experience and talent.

However, too often their final ball let them down or they made the wrong decision at the wrong time - and when they did find the target they found Belarus goalkeeper Andrey Gorbunov in

fantastic form.

Belarus worked extremely hard throughout the game and their defending was admirable, and even in attack they caused France a few problems with their breaks, although Steve Mandanda was never really tested.

Only one team from the group will automatically qualify for World Cup 2018 and while Belarus would never have hoped for anything more than a play-off, France will now be under pressure in their next match against Bulgaria. (Eurosport)

Switzerland bring Portugal down to earth with a 2-0 bump EURO 2016 champions Portugal slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Switzerland as their World Cup qualification campaign started dismally.

Two goals in seven firsthalf minutes through Breel Embolo and Admir Mehmedi saw the hosts gain an unlikely lead, with the Swiss seeing out the result after the restart to claim maximum points.

GOA pledges $1M yearly for Baird … NSC to help UG scholarship athletes

NATIONAL men’s javelin record-holder Leslain Baird is among four athletes who have been offered partial scholarships to study and train

in Jamaica, and Guy ana Olympic Association (GOA) president K. A. Juman-Yassin says the entity has committed to funding Baird and assisting the

other athletes as much as possible.

Baird has been offered a place at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Yassin stated that

Wins for Guyana’s Drayton and Khan as Chess Olympiad enters fifth round WHEN Guyana men’s team took on a team from Guernsey in round five of the ongoing 42nd Chess Olympiad, Candidate Masters Taffin Khan and Anthony Drayton constructed their first wins, to end with 2.0 and 1.5 points respectively, yesterday, in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Guyana’s Su Haifeng, rated 1800, ended his match against the higher-rated Candidate Master, Andrew Hale, 1940, in stalemate, picking up another 0.5 point to take his total up to 2.5 points and keep him in the lead of the men’s team.

the Guernsey side boasting a full four-man team of CM, while Guyana had only three CM. Guyana’s other player for the team, Ronuel Greenidge, lost his fourth match in the competition, this time bowing out against Toby Brookfield. The men are scheduled to play a team from Malta tomorrow.

Women Candidate Master (WCM) Maria Varona-Thomas continues to lead in points on the Guyana’s women’s team, where she has three points after five matches. In yesterday’s game, Varona-Thomas faced off against fellow WCM Aisha Al-khelaifi and played to a draw, as the Guyana women played Qatar.

Sheriffa Ali was able to keep Kholoud Al-Khelaifi somewhat at bay and earn a draw in her match, taking

her up to 2.5 points after four matches.

Players Jessica Clementson (1233) and Yolander Persaud (1151) have one point each. Clementson failed to increase her points standing after losing against Fatima A. Al-khulaifi (1584), while WCM Alshaymaa Safar (1603) made the first move in her match where she conquered Guyana’s Julia Clementson. Julia is an unrated player.

Julia has still failed to gain any points, losing both matches she has played thus far. Persaud did not play in this round of the competition, where only four out the team’s five players can play per round.

The women’s battle continues when they come up against a team from Chinese Taipei, also set to take place tomorrow.

the GOA will be budgeting US$5000 per year to assist Baird towards this endeavour, which will also see Baird studying for a Diploma in Sports Massage.

“We are still working out the little fine details. He has to get permission from the GDF. He’s an officer there and we have decided that we will fund the tuition and the other expenses up to a limit. We have budget-

ed US$5000 for him, and I am hoping that the GDF will pitch in and also assist him,” Yassin explained.

Apart from Baird, Hampton Games gold medallist Natrena Hooper and University of Guyana (UG) students Owen Wilson and Emmanuel Archibald have been offered partial scholarships to the University of the West Indies (UWI).

According to Yassin, the GOA has reached out to the National Sports Commission (NSC) to also lend assistance. The Commission agreed to assist the two UG students, but Yassin is not satisfied with that.

“I do not understand that, and I do not see why assistance cannot come to Ms Hooper. She barely missed the (Olympic) qualifying mark as a high jumper, and for a young athlete … it shows the potential that is there.” Yassin said, at the time directing his remarks at NSC Chairman Ivan Persaud.

Yassin made his comments last Saturday at a press briefing, reporting on the performance of Guyana’s team at the recently concluded Rio Olympics, where Persaud was present.

Persaud promptly agreed to look into the scenario.

Yassin pointed out that having the athletes, particularly, go abroad to train, poses a great advantage to not only the athletes themselves but the development of sports overall in the long run.

“Leslain will become a better javelin thrower, and more importantly also, is that when he finishes he has that knowledge so he will be able to coach and develop other young javelin throwers.

So we’re looking at three benefits - he is going to get a diploma, he is going to improve his javelin throwing, and then he will be able to coach and develop young javelin throwers in Guyana.” Yassin noted.

NAMILCO rewards Boyce and Jefford top athletes THE National Milling Company (NAMILCO) yesterday rewarded Winston George and Alita Moore for their top performances at the recently concluded Boyce and Jefford Classic.

George and Moore sweep the sprint events and led the Police Progressive Athletics Club to their third consecutive championship title.

According to information reaching Chronicle Sport, three radicals will be shipped from Barbados during this month in an attempt to showcase the machines to Guyanese spectators.

The Suzuki Radical series is currently only featured at the Bushy Park raceway in Barbados. However several local stake-

holders are planning to ship a few of the machines to the South Dakota Circuit for the spectacle.

A source in Barbados has confirmed that the Bushy Park Motor Sport Inc. (BPMSI) has been asked to prepare the documents for the shipping as soon as possible and said stakeholders are currently in discussion with the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) as to how the demonstrations can be done.

But the source refused to say which radicals would be shipped home declining to answer if any of the said cars to be shipped had Guyanese owners.
