RESIDENTS of Lethem, Region Nine, are now enjoying reliable and clean energy, with the commissioning of a $472 million one megawatt solar farm in the township on Friday.

Already 10,000 liters of diesel or some 63 drums of fuels were saved, since the solar power plant started testing on July 26.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Energy Agency, Dr. Mahender Sharma, said that, with the current fuel cost, the solar farm will save approximately $136 million annually.

He added that this will allow the payback period for the project to be only three and a half years. The high-powered solar system forms part of the PPP/C Government’s drive to resort to more renewable energy.

During the commissioning ceremony, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, underscored that the aim is to ensure the entire region benefits from renewable energy in the future.

He believes that the project will significantly reduce the monthly electricity expense for the over 1,400 households across the town

that are receiving service from the farm.

“I was told that the peak demand in the township on grid is about 1.1 megawatt, this commissioning with the solar energy given to you

by God himself, will deliver one megawatt… it’s coming into your grid and powering your homes. So, literally the town is running on renewable energy for about five hours if you get good sunlight,” Minister Indar noted.

According to the minister, residents there normally pay $80 for kilowatt, which is a higher rate than Georgetown. This is because the fuel comes from afar, and the transportation price normally takes up the energy cost.

He emphasised that, with the historic undertaking, no fuel will have to be utilised for at least five hours daily. “…that means the operating cost of the power company will go down, that means the money that we used to subsidise could go into infrastructural works and social goods,” Minister Indar said.

–– calls on citizens to reject false narrative by Opposition, anti-gov’t forces SOME 2,000 residents of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) have gained employment as part of the government’s part-time job initiative.

In his remarks at an event in Patentia, West Bank Demerara, where the part-time job initiative was discussed, Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo called on Guyanese to examine the government’s development agenda and pattern, and use the evidence to reject the false narrative being peddled by the Opposition and other anti-government agents that the government is deliberately withholding pay increases for public servants.

Dr. Jagdeo reminded his audience that it was the former APNU+AFC Government that took away the one-month tax-free bonus from the Joint Services, which the PPP/C Administration has since re-implemented.

He said it was the PPP/C Government that redeemed the Public Service from a pauperised state, adding: “… But they can only say that for people who do not know the history of this country, or who are not aware of it, and we need to stand up to this sort of thing.”

The Vice-President made it clear that the PPP/C administration will not allow this sort of thinking by the Opposition to dictate its policies.

“We have a straight and clear ideology, and we have a goal which we outlined in our Manifesto,” Dr. Jagdeo said.

He noted that the PPP/C has committed to providing citizens with world-class education and healthcare; providing job opportunities and ensuring their safety, and the administration has since embarked on that journey over the two years since it has returned to office.

The Vice-President said the development taking place offshore will secure close to 3,000 jobs for residents of West Coast Demer-

our community, and our job is not just to go and sit there; that it’s for us to have self-awareness of our community. One of the biggest contributions that they want out of this part-time work is for us to develop our communities, and we have to do that.”

Through the part-time job programme, persons could work for 10 days per month in the respective government agencies and ministries, and earn up to $40,000.

The employees are being placed at various government offices across the region, including health centres, schools and administrative buildings, and will also be involved in community service programmes.

He referenced the largest privately-owned wharf that is being constructed north of Vreed-en-Hoop, as well as the government’s investment in the construction of the new Demerara River crossing, and the opening up of land for the development of some 14,000 house lots in the region, among several other major projects.

He said the government is currently making efforts to reclaim approximately 5,000 acres of land that the APNU+AFC gave away for coconut production, which to date has not materialised.

In December 2021, more than 20,000 public servants benefitted from a seven per cent salary increase, coupled with a $400 million bonus for frontline workers.

The PPP/C government has been making significant investments in the country despite the pandemic, and while a large number of persons were laid off around the world during that period, here in Guyana, public servants continued to receive their salaries.

The government has also been taking steps to rectify the irregularities in salary scales across positions in the public sector. Provisions were made in the 2022 budget.

These measures were added to what the government has been doing since assuming office to improve the lives of all Guyanese.

The COVID-19 cash grant of $25,000 per household, year-end bonuses in December 2020 for frontline workers and members of the Disciplined Services, an increase in old age pension and public assistance along with the reversal of punitive taxes are just a few of those measures that readily come to mind.

The part-time job initiative, in particular, is part of the PPP/C administration’s efforts to supplement household incomes in light of the rising cost of living.

Speaking with the Sunday Chronicle was one of the beneficiaries of this initiative, a mother of one who commended the effort and expressed hope that other recipients will give of their best in whatever positions they are placed.

“I think it’s a wonderful initiative, and I hope that everyone takes it upon themselves to make a good contribution in whatever work they are placed in,” said 35-year-old Erika Dasrath.

She also commended the officials for taking the

time out to meet with those being employed under the initiative and answering whatever questions and concerns they may have.

It’s not a handout; it’s employment, so it’s expected that they perform as any other civil servant for the 10 days,” Chairman of the Regional Democratic Council of Region Three, Inshan Ayube related.

Ayube noted that as Chairman of the region, he applauds the government for

this initiative, particularly given that the part-time nature of the programme will be ideal for persons who are pursuing academic studies.

“This timely intervention will definitely impact on the lives of a wide cross-section of people. You have young people, and you have middle-aged people; it will set the platform so that they will be able to perform a bit while still continuing to elevate themselves in terms of academics or other trainings that they might want to do,” Mr. Ayube said.

“This programme will enable them to do that, because they will be having access to finance while they develop themselves by pursuing studies. They will be encouraged to continue their studies too,” he added.

Residents also expressed their enthusiasm for the infrastructural developments that will be coming to not just Wales but the entire West Demerara area.

“It’s not so much the part-time or temporary work; is the infrastructure development that will be taking place in this community, and moreso the industries that’s going to be put down in this community.

Part-time work is going to be continuing, but people are going to be employed full-time when those institutions are established,” said Mark Khan, Chairman of the Patentia/Toeuvlugt Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).

He said that when the former Coalition government had closed the Wales Sugar Estate, it left the community in a dire state, but now thanks to the many initiatives being put in place by the PPP/C government, the communities are growing once again.

“The economic problem we would have seen when the Estate closed, we’re starting to see that would have diminished; we start to see a growth in the economics in this community again.

Those are areas that we appreciate, and areas we will continue to appreciate,” Khan said.

for Region Nine, 1.5 megawatts at Kumu, and the 0.7 megawatts in the Moco Moco Village. Altogether the two projects will value about $2.8 billion.

The government is also advancing works at the hydropower plant at Kato, Region Eight. The 150-kilowatt power plant will cost $469 million.

“So, that is what we are doing. When we say to the world that we are pursuing renewable energy, the projects are live projects and not on paper in someone’s office…its projects on the ground. Everywhere in the country you go they are proj-

ects on the ground,” Indar said.

He added: “Twenty-eight communities we are putting mini grids systems. We already finished nine of them and 19 are being implemented now.”

The project was financed under a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) back in November 2018.

The IDB country representative (ag), Lorena Solorzano Salazar, said the fund injected will not only support projects in Lethem, but other communities with approximately 3.5 megawatts of energy in total.

According to information posted on the President’s official Facebook page, the 186-suite facility will occupy 2.5 acres along the Railway Embankment Road, side-byside with the Arthur Chung Conference Centre and CARICOM Secretariat, just across from MovieTowne.

This adds offerings associated with the Embassy Suites brand in a contemporary hotel, providing hightech amenities and a high level of professional services to achieve a memorable experience.

The hotel will comprise multi-functional convention and banquet facilities, with various flexible meeting spaces, venues with natural lighting, and outdoor terraces.

The gallery market offers perfectly packaged “grab n go” items, snacks, sandwiches, pastries, and sweets,

while the bar will offer specialty beverages, and the restaurants, lobby bar, pool bar, and grill venues will offer the best of culinary art made simple and tasty.

Additionally, the hotel will have high-speed wireless Internet access in all suites, function rooms, and public areas, a 24-hour fitness studio featuring state-of-the-art cardio machines, and wellness treatment suites.

At a recent sod turning ceremony for the US$45 million AC Hotels Marriott, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, said that the government is committed to ensuring that it utilises resources to diversify from heavy reliance on the oil-and-gas sector, and is committed to accessing the “low-lying fruits” available in other sectors that are ready to be reaped.

President Ali noted that a major goal of the government is to ensure that strategic

investments are made that would allow the local hospitality sector to grow at the same pace as the massive transformational trajectory of the country.

“The goal is not a narrow goal of building more rooms in this country. If we believe that that is the goal, we’re all wasting time, [because] that is just an output of the goal.

The goal is to build a sector in which hospitality is the main cornerstone of growth and development. And to do that, one of the outputs has to be quality roots.

“Building the sector is directly related to supporting a robust, sustainable, and resilient development that is linked to many new and innovative products,” the

President said.

The President highlighted that the government has been keen on ensuring that it remains steadfast in its commitment to partnering with investors to achieve its goals for the transformation of the local economy.

The Head of State reminded that in addition to the many benefits these types of investments have in the areas of job creation, spinoff benefits such as added country visibility are also a major asset from these types of ventures.

The Head-of-State said that the government has committed to utilising investments to bolster the other sectors in the country, noting that plans are already

in place to ensure that Guyana is recognised worldwide as a hub for investment in food production, and tourism, finance, and information technology.

This, the President noted, has drastically changed the landscape of Guyana, and has increased the necessity of hotels to cater to these other growing sectors.

The Philosophy of Governance “BECAUSE we Care” has now become a household terminology.

Thousands of households are the beneficiaries of direct inflows of cash into their pockets through a variety of government interventions such as the “Because We Care” and the part-time employment programmes.

Those interventions, significant as they are from a financial perspective, speak to a philosophy of governance that is people-centred, especially as it relates to the ordinary working people.

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP), since its inception, has always embraced a working-class ideology and this is reflected in the class-orientation of successive PPP administrations going way back to the 1953 period, when for the first time in the country’s history, a pro-working class party was elected to office in the first election held under universal adult suffrage.

The election of the PPP, as to be expected, did not go down well with the then colonial office and the PPP was overthrown from government after just six months in office.

The PPP remained undaunted and after again winning the 1957 elections, continued with its pro-people policies, placing emphasis on agricultural development and on the social sectors such as

housing, water, education and health.

Those were the days when development financing was hard to come by, mainly because of the working-class orientation of the PPP administration.

A lot has changed since then and the PPP/C administration is now better positioned to pursue its pro-poor policies and programmes, thanks to oil revenues, which have now become a game changer in terms of revenue inflows which are expected to get better in the coming period ahead, as more and more oil wells become operational.

Development financing, however, has to be carefully managed if the country’s long-term growth is to be sustained.

As pointed out both by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Vice-President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, there has to be the right balance between infrastructural development and recurrent expenditures.

Development is about people and this is why significant sums of money are being spent on raising the standard of living of the Guyanese people, especially those in the low-income bracket and the more vulnerable in our society.

At the same time, massive infrastructural works are currently being implemented which will have a transformative impact on the economy and by extension

on the lives of every Guyanese.

There are those in the political opposition who are seeking to project a view, mainly out of partisan political interest, that the government is not doing enough to increase wages and salaries in the public sector, imputing ‘ulterior’ motives in its mischievous and baseless claims.

The intention is to pit one section of the working class against the other by creating the impression that those in the public sector are being discriminated against in favour of those in the agricultural sector, especially sugar workers and fisherfolk. This line of reasoning unfortunately is being parroted by the union representing public sector employees, namely the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU).

It matters little, if at all, to the political opposition that, unlike public sector employees, which for the most part enjoy security of tenure and benefit from annual salary increases, sugar workers have had their services terminated due to the closure of several grinding sugar estates by the previous APNU+AFC administration.

What the previous administration did, in effect, was to literally take bread out of the mouths of sugar workers and their families.

It is to the credit of the PPP/C admin-

istration that several hundreds of those workers are back in employment as work is currently in progress to bring back the shuttered estates to economic viability.

The cash payments to sugar workers and fisherfolk are “one-off,” unlike salary increases which have to be sustained over time as an additional expenditure on the recurrent budget.

The PPP/C administration, for its part, is aggressively pursuing its development agenda based on its core values and principles which are aimed at providing a better quality of life for all Guyanese, regardless of race, colour, creed or political orientation. As is evident in every society, there will always be those who are possessed by the “sour grapes” mentality and who, as it were, only see the glass as being half empty rather than half full.

Regrettably, there is not much that could be done to help such individuals who see only threats in every opportunity.

But as pointed out by President Ali, the developmental train will continue to pick up momentum.

The choice has to be made whether to come on board or be left behind.

Fortunately, the vast majority of Guyanese have opted to come on board, as the One Guyana train picks up speed and momentum.

Think outside the box

GUYANA and all Guyanese living at home and abroad began the week on a high note as the country prepared to celebrate “Emancipation Day,”2022 and the return of ACDA’s Emancipation Festival to the National Park.

President Ali could not resist showing his foot and waist “shots” and his singing quality as he hosted the Emancipation Dinner and Cultural Presentation at State House on Sunday. President Ali, UK High Commissioner Jane Miller and others turned the sod for construction of a €149 million (G$31.9 billion) Paediatric and Maternal Hospital at Goedverwagting, ECD. The week marked two years since President Ali and the PPP/C party were duly elected and legally sworn into power after the infamous attempted rigging of the elections in March, 2020, by the known suspects.

Some $5.8 billion will be distributed from this week in keeping with the “Because We Care” programme. Further, $80 million is no pigeon peas for the residents of their namesake island.

The Black Belly Sheep are trim. They shed some fat during the walk from Barbados to Guyana.

The week was hectic as you can see while perusing with your feet up: 1) “What we are saying to you is no village, no community, no individual will be left out of our development plans for Guyana,” said the Prime Minister during an outreach at “Melanie.”

Indeed, a government committed to the loyalty of a ‘One Guyana.’

2) “We are currently negotiating with the parent company for a US$2 billion coverage.

So that is the framework that we currently have as per the licences,” Attorney General Mr Anil Nandlall disclosed. “It is always good to have

insurance. In the event of something happening, insurance would be a great asset,” observed Paul Cheong. As the saying goes, the Devil is in the “unlimited liability.’

3) US Congressman Gregory Meeks, summed up: “He [President Ali], is an individual that has a vision of how to make sure that tomorrow is better than today, bringing all of the people of Guyana together and working together collectively with other countries in the forefront with reference to making sure that we deal with agriculture, so people are not starving or hungry and how the United States can work with them.”

The coalition remains visionless, no wonder they hung their heads down in shame and disgrace and cannot shake the hand that shook the world!

4) US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee affirmed her meeting with President Ali as “mutual love for democracy and that he treats citizens with the highest level of dignity.” President Ali is recognised, acknowledged and appreciated as a President who will remain approachable, understanding and compassionate. That is why he always extends a hand shake to all, meets with everyone and embraces anyone, even those selfish, greedy and uncouth ones who want to rock Guyana’s boat.

5) President Ali was bestowed with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from the US Congressional Black Caucus. It indicates that the President: “You are going to help them overcome struggles that they may not foresee.” The President spends sleepless nights thinking about the people’s problems and solutions.

6) The certificate also indicates: “Your election was a triumph of democracy and a promise of hope for the Guyanese people.” A slap in the face of the coalition for their cheeky attempt to rig the election.

7) President Ali and his delegation were hosted to a dinner and US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee mentioned about him that: “Your light shines and hopefully, it can draw in other countries which you border, and we can find better ways to solve problems. I applaud you and I am delighted to be one of the hosts.” Livid, green with envy and confounded, the coalition must be kicking, swearing and dancing with fury among themselves.

8) The unpleasant, uncomfortable and unprofessional absence of US Congressman Hakeem Jeffries was inexcusable, inappropriate and immature. Again, US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee’s embarrassment showed when she said: “Your eagerness to speak with one of our members who was not able to come, to be able to show him the new Guyana is a very important position to take Mr President. I am very proud to have the opportunity to meet with you.”

9) In the yard it was overheard, “political machinations are afoot to destabilise the public service.” Sleeping Beauty just woke up from slumbering through 2015 to 2020.

10) The indomitable Minister Susan Rodrigues reminded Guyanese what a trail blazer and trend setter the PPP/C Government is when she said at the recently concluded International Building Expo: “Silica City will have beautifully aesthetic building designs, and most of all, the creation of a modern, new, smart city that will create the nurturing of lifestyles that balance culture, climate change risks, and economic viability.” The former administrator destroyed, diluted and denied Guyanese 33 years of their precious lives!

11) Secretary of State Blinken called for “inclusive growth.” Come on coalition, join the band- wagon and be happy that your electoral

constituent is on board with the government’s policies.

12) Mr Blinken also referred to “strengthen transparency.” Stop issuing threats PNC and working in the dark to insinuate Guyanese with propaganda.

13) Vice-President Harris talked about “inclusive democracy.” The PNC has a heavy conscience and they need to liberate themselves from a state of denial.

14) VP Harris also mentioned about “economic development.” All destabilisers need to desist from creating roadblocks and contribute towards the progress of the nation, positively and not negatively.

15) The US Vice-President couldn’t help remarking about, “security for all Guyanese.” With the restructuring of the police force and the army, all the bad elements are slowly but surely being weeded out. The days of dictatorship are over, the days of controlling the police force, the army, the Guyana People’s Militia and Guyana National Service for illegal activities are buried, and, the PPP/C Government is not one to derail or undermine the law, but to guide, encourage and advise all law-enforcement officers to dedicate their loyalty towards their legal duties. In so doing, all will feel safe and secure if law enforcement officers function justifiably.

16) President Ali remarked at the sod-turning event for the new Hospital on the East Coast: “It is building out a health care model that is not only focusing locally, but focusing on the region, focusing on the diaspora.”

This is what inclusive democracy and growth is about, catering locally, regionally and internationally to people’s needs.

–– announces platform being developed to certify Guyanese for Amazon jobs PRESIDENT, Dr Irfaan Ali, has said that the community of Buxton, East Coast Demerara, is included in the government’s programmes and policies designed to bring prosperity to every Guyanese.

“I know what it is like to respect every single Guyanese as Guyanese. I know what it is like to celebrate each other as Guyanese. And, I’m going to lead a battle that includes Buxton for the upliftment of every single person and let me be very clear, every single one of you, every single Guyanese, is welcome on board,” Dr Ali said during his remarks at a ceremony to commemorate the Buxton- Friendship Museum, Archives & Culture Centre’s fourth anniversary, as well as the graduation of youths from the first-ever computer programme at the centre, on Saturday.

President Ali said that the government is actively working on a number of initiatives in several areas, including agriculture, that will bring economic empowerment and improve the livelihoods of residents in the community.

“I’ve already tasked the Minister of Agriculture. He has outlined a clear pathway on developing the farm-to-market road and developing the drainage canals, and I said to him, we must work, as my brother from the school of entrepreneurship said, we must work

Every culture, every system, every history points us to that singular whole that we are part of one family, the family of humanity,” the Head of State said.

Given this rich historical tapestry, he said that even as they celebrate, they must do so in “the true context of the facts” and recognise the contribution of Guyana’s African-Guyanese brothers and sis-

18) Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony underlined the PPP/C Government’s commitment, saying: “The investment that we are making here is people-centric investment to ensure our people benefit from world-class health care in Guyana, free of cost.” The PPP/C party and the government is providing economic development and standing by the people and for the people with equitable distribution of services.

19) The Brooklynite who wants to burn Georgetown down is appalled. He claimed: “Apparently, the PPP Government and Ali are not interested in solutions. They are interested in public relations stunts. They want to meet Congressman Hakeem Jeffries personally and individually.”

President Ali calmly advised: “Stop playing politics with the future of a country. This President will not allow it. I will speak about it and in stronger terms I’ll speak about it.” Forewarned is being forearmed.

20) Education Minister Priya Manickchand reflected: “Unfortunately, we left government and it stopped, it was abolished and the reason it was abolished was that they didn’t think it made sense.

The jig is up for the AFC

IN my two earlier columns, I examined how the AFC declined and eventually decided to leave the coalition.

I will now suggest what will happen to the AFC after December 2022 using the document labelled, “Review of the AFC and the Way Forward.”

I must say that what the AFC has been saying in the past month about its position in the coalition such as leaving, rebuilding, rebranding itself coincides with the above document even though it was written soon after the PPP entered office in August 2020. Put differently, the AFC has been running to who knows where, but it has been in the same place.

The main purpose of the AFC is to recognise “the need for widespread changes in the conduct and practice of politics in Guyana, and, in particular, the necessity to end the winner-take-all mantra within the political system” as so proudly stated in the document.

This is a classic case of di minimis where words do

match ambitions and actions.

You do not need an analysis from me to tell you that the AFC did not remotely meet this goal during the five years in office.

There is no sign that it would do so soon. The reason lies in this misguided and supercilious statement that the AFC supports “a broad-based, multi-ethnic alliance comprising political parties, civil society groups, organisations, and individual citizens.” Are we supposed to believe this declaration?

Again, this position was not practised. To me, the statement sounds like a swansong.

The party’s trump card, which it will use continuously, is detected in the following boastful statement -“The stark reality is that the AFC has the same number of seats today that it held during its peak performance as a single political entity facing the Guyanese electorate in the 2011 electoral contest, but less than the 12 seats it held in the coalition after the 2015 elec-

tions.”

Notwithstanding that it is not about the number of seats but the performance of the seats, the AFC in the same breath purportedly says: “The need to share the geographical proportional and national top-up seats have left the AFC in a politically worse position, a situation that now demands genuine and detailed analysis of the alliance’s future as a coalition partner.”

AFC. Thumbing through the document reveals some promise until I reached this drivel that the “AFC leaders at all levels must see themselves as the vanguard of Guyanese democracy and the voice against corruption and racialisation of Guyanese politics, which promotes one group over the other.”

Unless you are a die-hard fan and faithful of the AFC, you will not find comfort in the previously mentioned statement and take a deep yawn since the statement is

aligned with the likes of the Little Red Riding Hoods.

Come on, you can fool some people some time, but not all the people all the time.

However, it is never too late to put these sentiments into practice, even imaginatively.

Pages six and seven of the document repeat exactly the bells and whistles of what Khemraj Ramjattan and his sidekicks have been feeding the media, and that is, to stay or leave the coalition.

To illustrate, compare what the AFC said about exiting and rebuilding itself to the media two weeks ago with the following position of leaving the coalition in the document.

“Exit the current construct and move forward independently, which would allow the party to rebrand, reinvent and regain its identity.” This is one reason why I believe that the “way

forward” document is still important to the AFC. At one stage, and I do not exactly know when, the AFC thought that to survive, it could not continue under the current Cummingsburg Accord and that an MoU governing new arrangements relating to the role of APNU and the AFC in the Parliamentary Opposition should be established detailing how the AFC would function with APNU on parliamentary and policy positions relating to parliament.

Does anyone really care?

Nonetheless, it appears that coalition was rife with internecine strife and backstabbing, but the party will never admit that. The jig of the AFC in the coalition is up. The people have caught on to the hidden gimmicks.

Hyperbolic speaking does not cut it any more to bolster flagging spirits.

I close by saying that this is my last column on the AFC until December 2022 when the AFC skips town.

However, check out this statement in the document.

“AFC members should protect the AFC as an institution even if they have grave reservations about views expressed by members or decisions taken and not leak confidential and internal discussions to the media. Such activities should be subject to party discipline to show its total opposition to such actions, which should be deemed ‘anti-party’.”

Understanding Energy

Guyana’s gas-to-power future

LAST week, the announcement of two additional discoveries in the Stabroek Block increased Guyana’s proven reserves to 11.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

Additionally, a new Rystad Energy report finds that Guyana accounts for 18 per cent of discovered resources and 32 per cent of discovered oil since 2015.

Guyana has emerged as a global leader in total offshore finds and one of the most competitive supply sources outside of core Middle East and offshore Norway production, beating out the Permian Basin, Russia, and many other offshore sources. In 2022 alone, Guyana’s GDP is expected to grow by almost 50 per cent, primarily driven by the oil sector.

An analysis of the offshore discoveries finds that 20 per cent of proven reserves are estimated to be associated gas, some 16 trillion cubic feet. If estimates hold, Guyana will have the third largest gas reserves in South America.

This finding comes as the government seeks to finalise the gas-to-shore project, a signature achievement

that would be a win for the country and the Guyanese people.

This joint project, funded by ExxonMobil Guyana, will deliver gas from the Liza field to an onshore gas-fired power plant to generate electricity and a Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) plant to cover Guyana’s domestic demand for other natural gas products. Additionally, Guyana’s electricity costs could be reduced significantly to one-fourth of what Guyanese pay now.

The gas-to-shore project would bolster Guyana’s commitment to sustainable oil and gas development by utilising associated gas for productive purposes. At a gas forum in May, President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Timothy Tucker, expressed support for this project.

A joint venture of Dutch firm Van Oord and Luxemburg-based, Subsea 7, was selected to design, manage, and install the approximately 190-kilometre pipeline. This comes after President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, highlighted the government’s extraordinary measures to ensure transparency and value for money.

“There is absolutely nothing to hide in this process or project. It is above board, it is transparent, and it is open. It has undergone every test of scrutiny,” President Ali said at the recently held gas-to-shore forum.

President Ali urged the public to look beyond the pipeline to the transformational potential in other sectors.

“The benefit[s] of this project is not only about the cost of electricity… It is national and transformative in nature and cuts across sectors, and every stakeholder will benefit from it,” Dr. Ali said.

The pipeline will be able to move 130 to 140 million cubic feet per day of associated gas onshore to be processed. The gas used in power generation will support the transition to renewable energies,

including hydropower and solar, and will remain a key source of reliable base load power for decades. As the gas sector matures, there is potential for Guyana to become a significant player in the lucrative global gas trade and secure both domestic supplies while supporting the energy needs of neighbours and allies.

Conflict in Europe over the last several months has sent world energy markets into uncertainty, and now gas supply to the European Union (EU) from Russia has dropped nearly twothirds compared to last year.

The EU will benefit from Guyana’s increased production capacity in the next five-to-ten-years, as it seeks to move away from Russian oil and gas. In June, the EU Parliament voted to consider natural

gas projects as “green” for investment, a signal that the commodity will be an essential part of the EU’s energy mix in the coming years, even as it seeks to move to renewables.

Rystad Energy’s report found the emissions intensity from Guyana’s offshore operations outperforms 75 per cent of global oil and gas producing assets, making it an even more lucrative investment location and a key piece for reducing global carbon emissions.

Guyana can capitalise on its resources and reach climate targets by focusing on gas as a “transition” fuel.

General of the Americas at the EU, Brian Glynn, told reporters in July that “the more supply of gas there is in the world, the more choices people have about where they get that

gas… We have discovered in the European Union that one of our principal gas suppliers of gas… is an unreliable partner, so we’re looking to other parts of the world for more reliable partners.” Guyana can be that reliable partner, and a recent article from energy analyst Arthur Deakin found that Guyana could replace Russian oil in Europe by up to 17 per cent in the years to come.

For Guyana, the gasto-shore project is an investment in energy independence, lower electricity costs, and diversification away from imported fossil fuels.

With continued investment in the sector and the necessary regulatory and transparency frameworks, Rystad estimates that Guyana will become a top five global offshore producer by 2035.

Hypertension and the medications

HYPERTENSION, or high blood pressure, is described as the pressure exerted on the arterial walls when the heart pumps blood.

The reading is expressed as a ratio of systolic (arterial pressure when the heart beats) over diastolic (arterial pressure when the heart rests). Generally, the ratio below 120/80 mmHg is considered normal.

Pre-hypertension, or elevated blood pressure, has a ratio up to129/89 mmHg. Stage One hypertension is up to 139/89 mmHg, whilst Stage Two is from 140/90 mmHg. A hypertensive crisis is above 180/120 mmHg. These are the four stages of hypertension.

The importance of controlling blood pressure is to reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attack and strokes.

Because hypertension is asymptomatic, late diagnosis may cause diet and lifestyle modifications not to precede treatment, although such interventions would be initially desirable.

The treatment protocol would be determined not only by the stage of hypertension, but other criterion to be considered, such as the patient’s race, age, kidney function, diabetic status, and cardiovascular disease risk assessment. Review on how the patient is responding to treatment is done at a bi-monthly to monthly interval, where dosages may be adjusted upwards or downwards, or other categories of drug could be added on if not responsive to treatment.

The first line treatment, as developed by the WHO (World Health Organisation), include medications such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers, after which a review is done to check on response, compliance, and if any side effects are experienced.

Diuretics, also referred to as water pills, reduce the blood volume by allowing you to pass out water and salt. Examples of such are Lasix (furosemide), aldactone (spironolactone), HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide), and Natrilix SR (indapamide). Some water pills are a combination of more than one diuretic, depending on the patient’s retention of water or kidney dysfunction, which occurs mostly in the elderly. Most serious side effects are allergic reaction, kidney failure, or irregular heartbeat. Levels of sodium and potassium in the blood should be monitored.

ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors are one type of vasodilators, and are best selected for the diabetic hypertensive patient, or a hypertensive patient with heart failure, since it has dual functions; protection on the kidneys, as well as the blood pressure lowering.

Widely prescribed locally are captopril, Ramipril, and enalapril. However, the side effect of cough may limit its scope. In addition, other side effects such as sore throat, mouth sores, irregular heartbeat, or rarely an immediate reaction such as the swelling of neck, face and tongue may occur, and may require emergency intervention and subsequent discontinuation of this drug. Regular monitoring of the potassium levels is required. ** Calcium channel blockers are another vasodilator category of first-line antihypertensive, which are electrical signal blockers, for example Nifedipine, Amlodipine, Diltiazem, and Verapamil. They block the entry of calcium into the heart muscles and blood vessels, thus facilitating relaxation. These work best in black ethnicity, but may cause ankle swelling as a

side effect.

Beta-blockers are another category of drugs which reduce the force at which the blood is pumped by the heart, thus slowing down the heart rate.

Some of the popular ones locally are Atenolol, Metoprolol, and Bisoprolol.

Beta blockers are contraindicated in asthmatics, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), diabetes mellitus, and peripheral vascular disease.

Alpha blockers have a dual purpose: They are indicated for hypertension and, simultaneously, prostate hypertrophy. They relax the pressure of the blood vessels by blocking nerve signals that are sent out to tighten these vessels. Most pronounced side effects of alpha blockers are postural hypotension (dizziness or light-headedness when changing position from lying to sitting, or from sitting to standing) and headaches.

Carvedilol falls in a unique category, which has both alpha and beta blocking properties.

Alternatively, there are central acting agents which prevent the signal from the brain to reach the heart, causing the heart rate to decelerate and also not to narrow the blood vessels.

These medications are Clonidine and Aldomet (methyldopa); the latter is mostly selected in gestational hypertension.

Finally, a category of vasodilators which just widens all blood vessels is hydralazine and minoxidil; the latter is also used topically for alopecia.

The European Heart Journal in 2019 suggested that taking hypertension medication just before bedtime was highly recommended to reduce illness or death due to heart and blood vessel disease, despite the fact that the body mechanism causes blood pressure to

be lowest during your sleep, and raise whilst doing the daily activities.

The most appropriate candidates for this practice are diabetics, the elderly, and chronic kidney disease and obese patients.

POINTS TO NOTE: * Antihypertensives must be taken daily for life; do not stop unless instructed by your doctor. * Diuretics are most conveniently taken during your waking hours, so that your sleep will not be interrupted for a bathroom visit. * If you experience side effects after starting any hypertension medication, such as dry cough, ankle swelling and dizziness, then immediate feedback must be given to your healthcare provider, so that changes to the regimen can be made. * No grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be taken concomitantly with calcium channel blockers, since it interferes with the breakdown of the drug. * Likewise, alcohol is not recommended with calcium channel blockers, and may increase side effects of the drug. * Synergistic use of calcium channel blockers and other antihypertensive medications may potentiate a drop in blood pressure.

Grim prospects for Opposition Leader

AUBREY NORTON has had every opportunity to prove to the world that he could manage the affairs of this country, if given the

chance to lead. He has had the opportunity to prove himself as a Statesman, and a learned politician.

Additionally, Norton has

been tested already by his opponents, and certain clever politicians. His maturity, competence, and experience have faced the litmus test as

a major interlocker in the school of Guyanese politics.

Internally, the various factions within the People’s National Congress,

A Partnership for National Unity, Alliance for Change, Working People’s Alliance, and the Guyana Action Party have already tested out Norton as a leader.

Externally, the Guyanese public has been a silent judge of Norton’s effectiveness in the post of Opposition Leader, PNC Leader, and APNU Chairman. The public has had a taste of the politics of Norton, and its impact from November to this current period.

Sadly, Norton has seemingly failed miserably and badly at all the current roles he holds.

At best, Norton’s performance could be described as underwhelming, and troubling politically. He has not convinced anyone that he could get the job of being an effective Opposition Leader done.

Further, as the Chairman of APNU and the PNC Leader, Norton’s style has had very little positive impact on the image of the party or coalition’s forward movement.

He seemingly has fallen into the same laid-back approach to politics broadly.

It is being proven daily that Norton might have somehow won the races at Congress Place and in the parliamentary opposition, but has still not managed to set himself apart from the legacy that David Granger, Joseph Harmon, Robert Corbin, Desmond Hoyte and Forbes Burnham left him.

Unfortunately, Norton does not see the need to have a plan. He is out here playing his politics and talking about everything and anything to get some spotlight in the traditional or social media.

It is clear that two years after the 2020 defeat, the Opposition Leader is still doing the same things in the same manner, and is expecting different results; this is tantamount to madness.

The truth is, Guyanese are growing weary of these shenanigans. They are growing tired of the street politics, and the same PPP/C discrimination banter. They want change and dynamism.

They want an Opposition Leader who is not aloof or too busy trying to convince the world of his intellect by using all sorts of big, misplaced, and complex vocabulary.

Understandably, the public wants an Opposition Leader who is warm, levelled, and cool-headed. The public wants a thinker, and someone who is not afraid to accept a handshake like a diplomat, even while continuing to be firm and critical of policies. An Opposition Leader who does not take the world too seriously, and lies about everything under the sun is not needed.

One thing is certain, Norton is not in touch with reality, and is leading all who would follow him blindly to the chopping blocks.

Guyanese are much more intelligent and lesser patient with politicians who are not getting anywhere anytime fast.

Lastly, the Opposition Leader is lost at shore.

Somebody, needs to show Norton how to play the game of politics smartly or wisely at this juncture.

He is taking too long to come up with factual and evidential criticisms of the PPP/C Government using the policies and plans they won that election in 2020 with.

The truth is, the Opposition Leader has gone to a football game and he doesn’t realise he left his boots behind. He is playing a dangerous game in the political arena in Guyana and has not recognised he does not have armor on, much less the truth on his side.

Every battle he is waging against the PPP/C, results in a loss for him. And, he is locked in the mirrors thinking, wishing and hoping that 2025 catches up with him so he gracefully retires the post. Why till then? The Opposition Leader could hand in the towel now, saving himself the agony of the lifetime award of being the longest serving Opposition Leader in modern history.

Aubrey Norton’s prospects are seemingly grim.

PPP/C Gov’t did more for Afro-Guyanese compared to previous administration

–– Attorney-General says

THE People’s Progressive Party/Civic administration (PPP/C) has done more than the previous administration to empower African communities through their deliberate policy that targets housing, land, jobs, health, and economic prosperity under the “One Guyana” platform.

So, the government does not discriminate against Afro-Guyanese since the PPP/C believes that every person in Guyana must have equal access to the development patrimony of the nation.

This is the position being articulated

by Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister, Anil Nandlall S.C., as he poured cold water on the current wave of accusations that the PPP/C government is discriminating against the Afro-Guyanese community.

Nandlall, during his weekly programme ‘Issues in the News,’ was very adamant that successive PPP/C governments have a long track record of ensuring that they carry the development, goods and services to all Guyanese including Afro-Guyanese.

He compared the track record of PPP/C governments to that of PNC/ APNU/AFC successive governments, concluding that the PPP governments have done significantly more for Afro-Guyanese.

Minister Nandlall made it clear that in two years, the PPP/C has distributed more house-lots, and scholarships to Afro-Guyanese than the last five years of the PNC/APNU+AFC’s term in office, proving there is no discrimination.

SCHOLARSHIPS Acknowledging that education is key to empowerment, the Attorney-General outlined the statistics of how many Afro-Guyanese benefitted from the scholarships under successive PPP/C governments, as opposed to the PNC-led APNU+AFC government.

He related that there is also no discrimination in the administration’s Cuban scholarships programme.

The Ethnic Relations Commission had conducted widespread investigations into the claims of ethnic discrimination and found nothing of substance against the PPP on the issues related specifically to the Cuban scholarships.

Meanwhile, the Attorney-General said the opposition politicians continue to spread their lies about discrimination in education, denying many young and talented persons a chance to use the vehicle that the government has provided to them for empowerment, and a way out of poverty.

Attorney-General Anil Nandlall, S.C. noted that last year the PPP government had delivered above its target, providing Guyanese students with 5,000 or more free scholarships.

This year, he said, over 7,000 scholarships have been allotted to Guyanese students, thousands of whom are Afro-Guyanese.

“We don’t have to go into communities to advertise and speak about a programme like that. We can put an advertisement in the newspaper inviting persons to apply. You know what we did?

We went into every single village in this country.

“On the East Coast of Demerara, we went into every single community, Buxton, “Melanie,” Golden Grove, Nabaclis, Mahaica, Plaisance…every single African community and spoke to them, encouraging them to go and apply for this scholarship,” the Attorney-General said.

He went on to say: “They were on the ground telling the people, don’t turn up to the meetings. Don’t take the scholarships. I confronted that on the ground in the communities. They are telling their supporters, don’t be educated. They are denying their supporters’ children an education. And they want to see that the PPP is discriminating. And that is the mantra. But they don’t they can’t come with facts to support that baseless allegation.”

This is in sharp contrast to what obtained under the previous administration.

Nandlall related that few persons got scholarships under the APNU+AFC administration. He said that they had other political motives which were seen when their own ministers, ministers’ children and close associates were chosen.

equipment to supply logs that company. That company owed those people millions of dollars for logs already supplied. More importantly, it was the only market that people had for their logs.

“We don’t speak loose propaganda,” Minister Nandlall said, noting that the so-called Afro-Guyanese have not done anything for their communities or supporters.

He made no apologies for opining that “this socalled African leadership talk much but deliver very little …the truth must be confronted.”

Nandlall made it clear that the PPP/C government will continue to adumbrate their policies of inclusivity and equality throughout Guyana, regardless of the propaganda and misinformation that is spread.

He was confident in declaring that the current government would always rebut and rebuff the allegations made because no one administration should ever be allowed to discriminate purposely against the six peoples of Guyana. (DPI)

St. Kitts elections: Gunraj to submit report to CARICOM SG

CHIEF of Mission of the CARICOM Election Observation Mission (CEOM) to the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, Sase Gunraj, reported that the 5 August 2022 elections characterised by tension and uncertainty reflected the will of the people, since their ballots were cast without intimidation or fear.

Gunraj, a commissioner of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), will prepare a full Independent Report for submission to the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, Her Excellency Dr. Carla Barnett.

At the invitation of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) mounted a CARICOM Election Observation Mission (CEOM) to observe the conduct of the General Elections, which were held in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis on August 5, 2022.

The CEOM arrived in St. Kitts and Nevis on the evening of August 3, 2022.

According to a statement from CARICOM on Saturday, meetings, both virtual and in-person, were held with His Excellency, Sir Tapley Seaton, GCMG, CVO, QC, JP, Governor-General; a team from St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKLP) led by the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Denzil Douglas; Ambassador Sydney Osborne, Campaign Manager of the People’s Labour Party, representing Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, Prime Minister; Mr. Hilroy Brandy, the Commissioner of Police; Mr. Ogrenville Browne, Member of the Electoral Commission, representing the Supervisor of Elections, and St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry

and Commerce.

CARICOM noted that the CEOM’s interactions with the aforesaid stakeholders revealed the political environment in St. Kitts and Nevis was characterised by tension and uncertainty.

On polling day, members of the CEOM visited a total of 100 polling stations out of 122 across all 11 constituencies on both islands.

The CEOM’s observation included the opening of the poll, the voting process, the closing of the poll and the centralised counting of ballots.

“It was observed that a number of polling stations were not opened in a timely manner. However, all the stations were fully staffed, and most had agents present, representing all political parties that contested the elections. Most polling stations were conveniently located and easily accessible to the voters, including differently-abled persons.

The CEOM observed that there was an adequate supply of requisite voting and related electoral material,” CARICOM noted in their statement.

Further, CARICOM stated that adequate security was in place at all locations and officials conducted their duties in a professional and fairly efficient manner.

However, it is evident there is a need for more training of all persons involved in the electoral process and greater planning and execution of elections-related activities. This would have reduced and/or eliminated the delays experienced in some aspects of the process.

The initial assessment of Election Day activities by the CEOM is that the voters were able to cast their ballots without intimidation or fear.

The CEOM expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Aviation, and all stakeholders including political parties, civil society, the security services for their sterling support throughout the mission, and in general, the People of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis for their warm welcome and cooperation which contributed to the success of the Mission.

According to CANU’s first and second quarter reports for 2022, the Joint Service operations and the government’s continued support, coupled with maintaining good relationships in communities and the media, have increased the agency’s success.

“CANU has placed great emphasis on strengthening and enhancing the professionalism of its ranks, as evidenced by the number of successful operations conducted by the Unit at both the Intelligence and Operational levels,” the agency noted in its report.

TWO years after President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali was sworn in as Guyana’s 9th Executive President, on August 2, 2020, the country has embarked on a transformational plan that will see Guyana becoming a country ‘second to none’ under the President’s tenure.

This is according to Region Three Private Sector Inc. (R3PSi) Head, Halim Khan, who noted that the President has already begun to tackle barriers that hinder the smooth running of businesses that have historically held Guyana back.

Khan said there had been tremendous development during the last two years in housing and water, infrastructural development, education, health care, and citizen welfare.

“As we reflect, Head of R3PSi, it is important to Halim Khan understand that the government is responsive, responsible, and proactive in making the right policies to enhance the welfare of the people of Guyana,” Khan told this publication.

The R3PSi Head noted that the President is also keen on the development and sustainability of the non-oil sectors such as tourism and hospitality.

“President Ali and his Government is working to position Guyana as a technological, health and education hub, where persons could come to access world-class services while looking to tap into sports and wellness tourism,” Khan added.

Further, Khan said while there is much to celebrate, there has also been much to reflect on since it is a fact that the President had to wait for five months to be sworn in simply because of naked and transparent attempts to alter the election results. This has made President Ali, even more determined to ensure that his vision of ‘One Guyana’ is realised.

Khan explained that the ‘One Guyana’ vision is about creating an equal society, guaranteeing that everyone is allowed to lead productive and happy lives, and reducing inequality in access to education, health, employment, income, and justice.

CHIEF Fire Officer (ag), Gregory Wickham, met with forty-four (44) recruits undergoing training to become firefighters during a Thursday visit to the Leonora Training School.

In addressing the recruits, Wickham encouraged them to be mentally, physically, and spiritually strong to endure the training and be successful.

He emphasised the

importance of maintaining discipline and unity within the Service, noting that there is no room for racism or favouritism at the training facility.

The new batch of recruits includes thirty-eight (38) males and six (6) females from various parts of the country.

Training commenced on Monday and is scheduled to be completed within three months.

Richard Thompson appointed ECB chair for next five years

RICHARD Thompson has been named the chair of the ECB for the next five years. Thompson, currently chair at Surrey CCC, will start in his new post on September 1, filling a vacancy which had lasted for

nearly a year.

Thompson was the unanimous choice of the nominations committee, headed by independent director Brenda Trenowden.

He will succeed Martin Darlow, who has been the interim chair since April and will continue as deputy chair of the board.

The position has been vacant since Ian Watmore stepped down in October 2021, paying the price for the ECB’s decision to pull out of a scheduled tour to Pakistan at short notice.

“I am immensely proud to become Chair of the ECB at what is a hugely important time for cricket,” Thompson said in a statement. “Cricket has given me the chance to meet an incredibly diverse range of amazing people. Their passion, endeavour and love for the game is what I want to harness, to take our game forward, to new heights across England & Wales.

To date, 38 young players from all three counties of Guyana have already benefited from three junior gear bag, two trophies, one arm guard, 14 bats, one box, two helmets, 11 pairs of cricket shoes, 10 pairs of batting pads, one bat rubber and 12 pairs of batting gloves.

In addition, two clubs in the Pomeroon area benefited from two used bats.

Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenaam Cricket Committees and Cotton Tree Die Hard also received one box of red cricket balls each while RHCCCC received two, 15 white cricket shirts, one pair of junior batting pads, one pair of wicket-keeping gloves and a set of stumps and bails from the Essequibo Cricket Board.

Cricket-related items, used or new, will be distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients.

Talent-spotting is being done across the country and club leaders also assist to identify talent. Progressive and well managed clubs will also benefit.

The initiative was birthed three years ago by ‘Three the Hard Way’ to highlight the inequality women folk endured when competing against their male counterparts in dominoes.

Some of their all-female events included Strikers Sports Club Christmas Bonanza in 2019, a Salute to Mothers in 2021 and the all-female Strikers Sports Club Anniversary celebration in 2022.

“Women are always made to compete against men and most of the time they are at a disadvantage because numbers are highly stacked

against them e.g if there is a tournament consisting of 27 teams (more or less), we seldom find three all-female teams that can compete because of the stigma attached to their participation (a woman’s place is in the kitchen etc.) and, this does not augur well for them.

They are usually booted (knocked out) by their male counterparts, as we would say in Guyanese parlance, “before seeing the promised land” to a final six participating teams of the said competition. BIRMINGHAM, England (CMC) – Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls flattened World number two New Zealand, 67-51, to set up an intriguing re-match with top-ranked Australia in today’s final of the Commonwealth Games.

(REUTERS) - World governing body FIFA has reminded India’s football association that it risks losing the upcoming Under-17 Women’s World Cup and faces a ban due to “deviations” from an agreed roadmap aimed at sorting out governance issues.

India’s highest court disbanded the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in May and appointed a three-member committee to govern the sport, amend the AIFF’s constitution and conduct elections that have been pending for 18 months.

In response, FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation sent a team, led by AFC General Secretary Windsor John to meet stakeholders in Indian football and laid down a roadmap for the AIFF to amend its statutes by the end of July and subsequently conclude elections at the latest by September 15. Last week, the Indian court or-

dered elections to be held promptly and said the elected committee would be an interim body for a period of three months.

“As per the said roadmap, the AIFF was to call for a special general assembly on the first week of August 2022 to approve the new statutes worked upon with FIFA, the AFC and the Indian football community,” a letter sent by FIFA and AFC said.

“Unfortunately, we have been informed that the Supreme Court’s hearing held yesterday (Wednesday) on the situation of the AIFF allegedly resulted in deviations to the aforementioned roadmap.

“If this is considered to be true, it would irrefutably jeopardise the mutual understanding which was displayed so far on the steps forward. ”The letter, seen by Reuters, was addressed to acting AIFF general secretary Sunando Dhar and signed by

FIFA secretary-general Fatma Samoura and AFC’s John.

It asked the Indian body to provide a transcript of the court’s decision by Tuesday.

FIFA warned that sanctions, if serious deviations to the agreed roadmap were found, could include “the suspension of the AIFF and the withdrawal of the hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India (in October)”.The elections of the AIFF, formerly led by FIFA Council member Praful Patel, were to be held by December 2020 but were delayed due to an impasse over amendments to its constitution.

WHEN Natalie Cummings and Chelsea Edghill fell yesterday in the Round-of-16 of the Women’s Doubles to New Zealand’s Chunyi Feng and Yangzi Liu, it brought the end of Guyana’s participation in table tennis at the Commonwealth Games.

The New Zealand pair defeated Cummings and Edghill 3-0 (11-2, 11-6, 11-4).

Cummings played in what was described by many as one of the best matches at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she went on to win a seven-set nail-biting round-of-32 match against Ruqayyah Kinoo of Mauritius.

The win placed Cummings and Guyana in the Round-of-16 where she eventually lost 0-4 to Wales’ 16-year-old prodigy, Anna Hursey.

Asked about the country’s performance at the Commonwealth Games, coach Lewis said the players did better than expected, but was critical of the lack of investment in the sport locally.

“When you take into consideration the team’s preparation coming into these games and coming up against more heavily-funded athletes at these games, I think they’re performing way beyond expectations right now,” Lewis said.

He added, “When you talk about being on-par, everything comes back to funding. It’s hard to get away from that aspect.

There’s no shortage of talent in Guyana and that’s not just table tennis.”

The popular table tennis coach is calling for a drastic change in the approach to sports in Guyana, noting “you

see some athletes this year and when you see them back next year, you’re seeing the gap widening. We’re still able to hold our own, but the gap is widening every day, so we need to change the way sport is being governed and the investment into sports.”

Lewis stated that in comparison to the players at the 22nd Commonwealth Games, the table tennis team overachieved.

Battle of the ‘Multis’

North Ruimveldt, CWSS clash today for MILO trophy

THE stage is set for the final of the finals of the MILO Schools Football tournament, today at the Ministry of Education ground.

Today's highly anticipated final, a battle of the Multis between Linden's Christianburg Wismar Secondary School and Georgetown's North Ruimveldt will be a keenly contested battle.

And both teams in yesterday's pre-game press conference preferred to leave their talking to the minimum and let their feet do the work today.

A similar sentiment was shared by CWSS coach Delon Peters who stated, "In order to do that (win) their execution needs to be on point. If they do what is told to them and what has been practised previously, the general expectation is to win."

At the end of the game, Petra co-director Troy Mendonca believes that both teams should consider themselves winners.

"We had a very challenging tournament. Nevertheless, these two teams deserve to be in the final and may the better team win."

Keeping hopes alive! ...Guyana into 4x100m relay finals!

By Rawle Toney in Birmingham, England GUYANA’S hope of landing a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games is alive and well, after Emanuel Archibald, Arinze Chance, Noelex Holder and Akeem Stewart finished third in semi-final 1 of the Men’s 4x100m relay.

With another sold out crowd at the Alexander Stadium, 32 000 roaring fans witnessed the Guyanese quartet running 38.92s to finish behind Trinidad and Tobago (38.84s) and England (38.48s).

Stewart provided the perfect start for Guyana, running in lane two. His pass to Archibald, who ran a superb second leg, was out of a textbook.

Arinze didn’t leave things up for chance on

the penultimate leg, as the National 400m Indoor record holder was perfect on the turn.

Holder, receiving from Chance, powered down the last stretch as if there’s no tomorrow. He was greeted by his joyful teammates, who appropriately celebrated their historic run.

Yesterday’s race marked the first time, in the history of the Commonwealth Games which started in 1930, that Guyana participated in the relays.

“It was a good effort.

Everybody did what he was supposed to do and we got the results we were hoping for.” Chance stated after the race.

Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, who was also present for the engagement, said that the ministry - and by extension - the government, “is about keeping promises that they have made.

The minister had made a promise and it is a reality now.”
