- as Guyana progresses, President Ali says AS Guyana marked Arriv al Day 2 025, President, Dr Irfaan Ali issued a heartfelt call for national unity, cultural pride and the equitable sharing of the country’s prosperity, urging citizens to honour the legacy of their foreparents while building a more inclusive future.

In his annual Arrival Day address, the Head of State urged citizens to honour the sacrifices of their foreparents, while actively shaping a society where every Guyanese feels a sense of belonging and purpose.

“Today, as we observe Arrival Day 2025, we pause to reflect on a defining aspect of our national journey—the invaluable contributions of those immigrants who came before us. They cam e with

little but gave us so much,” President Ali stated.

He noted that the day honours the legacy of the indentured immigrants, especially the East Indian community, whose arrival 187 years ago laid the foundation for modern Guyana.

President Ali stressed that this year’s observance must go beyond historical remembrance.

“We do so not only to look back, but [also] to urge a deeper recommitment to the future we wish to build—a future where all Guyanese, regardless of race, heritage, religion, or background, can feel a sense of belonging, pride, and purpose. No heritage must feel hidden. No voice must feel unheard,” the Head of Space said.

Addressing global

issues of xenophobia and cultural erasure, the President said, “In many parts of the world today, we are witnessing a rise in intolerance and discrimination against immigrants.

“People who have b uil t n a ti ons , p ow ered econom ies and enriched cultures are being targeted, vilified, and excluded. Let us never make that mistake. Let us cherish each other and uplift one another.”

He affirmed Guyana’s multiculturalism as a source of strength, not weakness.

“We are proud of our multicultural character. Diversity is not our weakness—it is our greatest strength.”

peoples, African-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese, and those of European, Portuguese, Chinese and mixed descent, are equally recognised and respected.

Calling for the equitable sharing of Guyana’s growing prosperity, President Ali

noted “Prosperity must not be a privilege—it must be a right... It is a bounty that must be shared equitably and sustainably.”

In his call to action, President Ali said, “Let us build a Guyana where no one is made to feel like a stranger in their own land... Let us move forward together—united, determined, and committed to a fu-

ture in which everyone belongs.”

Arrival Day in Guyana is observed annually on May 5 to commemorate the arrival of various immigrant groups who contributed to the country’s development, especially the first batch of East Indian indentured labourers in 1838.

Time for unity in defence of Guyana’s Sovereignty - Figueira says OPPOSITION Parliamentarian Jermaine Figueira has issued a call for national unity in the face of the immediate and existential threat to Guyana’s sovereignty, following the recent escalatory actions by the Venezuelan government.

In a strongly worded statement, Figueira condemned Venezu ela’s recent incursion into Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and its intention to hold elections within Guyana’s

territory, the Essequibo region.

He warned that those developments represent a direct violation of international law, the authority of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and are also a direct threat to the peace, security and territorial integrity of Guyana.

“What we do now, as a collective people, will define our future and echo through time,” he said.

placency, silence, or division. It is a time for clarity, courage, and decisive national unity. We must rise above partisan boundaries, personal

grievances, and political posturing to come together with a singular purpose: to defend our land, our dignity, and our right to exist in peace.”

The MP stated that the forebears fought and bled for the freedom that Guyanese enjoy now and did not make the sacrifices for the generations now to hesitate or fracture in the face of foreign aggression.

Further to this, he indicated that this is no longer about rhetoric or historical claims, as the threat is immediate and existential.

“Venezuela’s military

actions and their plan to install political structures within our territory constitute a flagrant violation of the provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice, measures which explicitly prohibit Venezuela from taking any steps to alter the status quo while the case is before the Court.

“Moreover, this beh a v i o u r sh a t t er s t h e commitments both nations made under the Argyle D eclaration to resolve this matter through peaceful and legal means,” he said in his missive.

He urged that these stakes should not be underestimated, as it is not merely a boundary dispute; it is an assault on Guyana’s sovereignty.

Against this backdrop, Figueira emphasised, “We must unify, urgently and unequivocally, regardless of the prevailing social fractures and national mood of despair. Police cautions against disruptions to Adriana’s funeral - says Hughes refused to share information he possessed on persons planning to obstruct proceedings

The Guyana Police Force has expressed grave concern over the refusal of Nigel Hughes to assist law enforcement with vital information that could safeguard the public and ensure the peaceful conduct of Adriana Younge’s funeral, despite his own public claims of being aware of an alleged plot to disrupt the proceedings.

In a press release issued late Sunday night, the Police said they are taking “serious note” of a Facebook post made

The Force said it made multiple attempts to contact Hughes via phone calls to obtain details on the alleged threat, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

As a result, Assistant Com missioner Mahendra Siwnarine, Commander of Region Three sent a message dir ectl y to H ug he s’ phone, form all y re-

questing information to help safeguard the event.

The message, which Hughes later shared publicly, read, “Any information you can provide to aid my security plan would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Sir.” In his reply, Hughes said, “Mr Siwnarine, t her e i s no w hi st le blower legislation in place to protect sources of information. I would not want to expose anyone to increased danger.”

The Police, however, noted that providing further details would not have compromised his sources, but would in stead “en sur e th e safety of many inno-

cent G uyanese w ho intend to attend the funeral or may be in close proximity.”

The Force has since issued a public appeal urging all attendees to avoid participating in any illegal activity, warning that persons found to be inciting or assisting in criminal actions will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs is reminding all citizens of the need to maintain a safe, respectful and non-disruptive atmosphere on Monday, May 5, 2025 “Arrival Day.” The Ministry said that this atmosphere is essential not only

Gov’t will support youth retooling for the new economy – Jagdeo

AS Guyana rapidly transitions into a more advanced and diversified economy, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has emphasized the need for government-backed support to help young people retool and prepare for emerging opportunities.

S pe aking du ri n g hi s weekly press conference on Wednesday, Dr. Jagdeo reflected on a recent engagement with students from the University of Guyana’s Economics Society, where many inquired about career paths best aligned with the country’s evolving economic landscape.

“I said, you’re going to have a lot of jobs here, but you have to pick the right areas too… so people have to be retooled for this new economy,” Dr Jagdeo recounted.

To this end, he stated that he spoke on some of the sectors where they can expect high-paying job expansion, such as smart agriculture, cybersecurity, and other areas focusing on artificial intelligence.

labour that will come in the future, we’ll be able to accommodate our people, not so in many parts of the world,” he added.

During his meeting with the youths at the last month at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Dr Jagdeo had stressed the importance of getting hands-on training and not just being taught theories.

He noted that while the government is already providing free education for its people, he is hoping the UG

can now focus on other areas, such as addressing age-old issues and building capacity.

Many youths had raised the issue that the job market is calling for experience, but the university is focusing more on teaching theories.

The Government of Guyana had called on Venezuela to “act responsibly” and comply fully with the legally binding orders of the ICJ, which prohibits Caracas from conducting elections in the disputed Essequibo region.

In the official release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Guyana had called on Venezuela to comply with the binding Orders issued by the ICJ on December 1, 2023, and May 1, 2025.

tered and controlled by Guyana.

The latest ICJ Order came after Venezuela announced in January plans to hold elections for a so-called “Guayana Esequiba State,” a term used by Venezuela to refer to Guyana’s Essequibo region.

“The Government of Guyana expects that the Government of Venezuela will act responsibly… and fully respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Guyana,” the statement said.

Guyana had also reiterated that it will not enter into bilateral negotiations with Venezuela over the territory, emphasising that the matter is already before the World Court That case concerning Venezuela’s rejection of the 1899 Arbitral

Award which defined the boundary was referred to the ICJ by the United Nations Secretary-General, in line with the 1966 Geneva Agreement.

Guyana further called on Venezuela to move beyond “lip service” to the Geneva Agreement and to comply with its terms, particularly Article IV(2), which recognises the role of the ICJ in settling the controversy.

“The Court’s judgement will be definitive, final and bindin g on Guyana and Venezuela,” the statement read.

The Ministry’s response comes on the heel as ICJ ruled 12–3 in favour of Guyana’s request for provisional measures to prevent Venezuela from organising any elections in the contested region, reaffirming

“The offer was never taken off, and so I don’t see a problem with us trying to move back to something like that to get people exposed, and it could become part of the curriculum, so they have to get a report and maybe part of the testing system in university.”

He agreed with the students that the university should do more and pledged that the government would ensure it is facilitated.

“We expect the people to come out ready for their job market, and the internship should be a routine part; the university is, in a way, I don’t want to be too critical…it’s become like routine. They just try to get through programmes. Sometimes it’s not the quality of the output that matters anymore,” he said.

The Vice President also highlighted that the gov-

ernment’s job is to give its people an education and the opportunities, stating: “That’s why I’m saying if what you train on must be appropriate, you’ve got to make decisions. That’s how it operates around the world.

So, mindset changes have to take place at every level, not only at the government, but even the people requiring training.”

Guyana has turned a transformative page in its educational journey: tuition at the University of Guyana is now officially free.

This move by the Government of Guyana, fulfilling a key promise of the PPP/C, marks a major leap toward educational equity and national development.

Beyond UG, the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) continues to widen the horizon, awarding scholarships to nearly 30,000 citizens for online studies — both locally and internationally.

Together, these initiatives signify not just access, but advancement—breaking the cycles of poverty and unlocking human potential on a national scale.

Recently, a Venezuelan naval vessel, the ABV Guaiqueiri PO-11IMO 469552, entered Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone on March 1, 2025, coming dangerously close — approximately 700 meters—to the FPSO PROSPERI-

TY, which was operating lawfully under a licence issued by Guyana.

The Venezuelan vessel m ade threatening radio communications, falsely claiming that the FPSO PROSPERITY was operating in Venezuela’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

It then proceeded southwest, repeating the same aggressive message to other FPSOs operating in the region.

In an appeal to international partners and regional allies, Figueira said Venezuela’s defiance of the international legal order is a broader threat that should concern all small states.

He urged those nations to speak loudly and act boldly, not just in defence of Guyana but in defence of every principle held dear.

“This is a fight not just for land, but for legacy, for the preservation of hard-won independence, and the right of all nations, no matter how small, to stand free from coercion and intimidation,” he said.

AS Sunday morning broke, the last day of the Origins Fashion Festival, it was clear that this historic event was so much more than a parade of stunning clothes and models.

The three-day extravaganza, which opened on Friday at the Grand Railway Courtyard, is a declaration of Guyana's determination to diversify its economy and become a creative hub for the Caribbean.

With 38 designers debuting their products to appreciative audiences, the government has demonstrated it does recognise the concealed potential of the creative sector not just for reasons of cultural expression, but also as a viable economic force.

President Ali's proclamation of the Guyana Fashion Council on the opening night of the festival is the kind of institutional foundation which has been missing in our creative industries for so long.

Guyanese designers and models have operated in isolation for far too long, without the organised assistance that would be required to take individual talent and convert it into an integrated industry.

The President's commitment to repurpose the Railway Courtyard into a vibrant, accessible hotbed of creative culture is the actual step forward into building our domestic talent sustainably.

It's precisely this type of investment which distinguishes casual pageantry from actual economic progress.

The actual value of the Origins Festival lies not in the three-day spectacle, but in the framework that it is attempting to establish.

Having 31 local designers supported by nine international counterparts, the sharing of ideas and strategies presents an unmatched learning process for our creative industry.

The clothing identification, sustainability, and ap-

plication of AI in fashion schools appreciate that current fashion requires creativity as much as technical know-how. Addressing both the commercial and creative aspects of fashion, the government is establishing platforms for an industry that will finance itself rather than one subsidised by the state.

When President Ali calls fashion a “powerful economic engine,” he is referring to an underrecognised reality: Fashion propels several industries simultaneously.

Every one of the designers who participate in the festival is a small business that has supply chains, employment opportunities, and export possibilities.

The tourism sector has been instantly boosted by international tourists, and the festival's incorporation of technology – including QR codes linking to the platforms of designers – facilitates local skill with global markets.

As the fashion events market worldwide is forecast to reach more than US$200 billion by 2032, even a share of this would be significant diversification for the economy of Guyana.

While the enthusiasm for the event is well deserved, it will require sustained follow through in order to sustain this kind of energy.

Adding a sixth runway show due to an overwhelming popular demand is evidence that there is genuine appetite for fashion content among Guyanese.

But to translate this energy into economic activity, there needs to be ongoing investment in infrastructure and skills training. The fashion illustration, design, and artificial intelligence in the creative economy workshops are good starts, but must be converted into full-time educational pathways.

veloping a "resilient, professional fashion industry" that delivers sustainable livelihoods must now be made tangible results.

The creation of the Guyana Fashion Council offers a vehicle for continuous interaction between creatives and policymakers, but only if independent and capable of speaking to the needs of the industry.

As the Railway Courtyard develops into the envisioned creative precinct, providing accessibility for future talent – not just established names – will be critical to guaranteeing inclusive development.

The Origins Fashion Festival is Guyana's boldest move to date to put itself on the world’s creative economy. Fashion sceptics may dismiss fashion as being superficial in comparison to more established industries, but President Ali's vision recognises that modern econ-

omies are propelled by diversity and innovation.

By investing in creative infrastructure, institutional support through the Fashion Council, and taking local talent to global markets, Guyana is taking a calculated risk on its creative capital.

As this festival closes today with its sixth runway show – added because the crowds asked for it – we should be marking this day not as the end of a project, but as the beginning of a new economic era for Guyana.

True success for Origins will be measured not in numbers of attendance or press, but in whether years later we are seeing a robust fashion ecosystem creating sustainable livelihoods and contributing well to our national brand and economy.

The runway has been built; now begins the harder task of building an industry that can boldly walk it for years to come

Origins gave me hope — fashion is how we tell our story and it’s time the world listened

Dear Editor, I DON’T even know where to start because my heart is still so full from the Origins Fashion Festival. As a young Guyanese who eats, sleeps, and breathes fashion and someone who deeply believes in this country, Origins felt like a turning point.

Like we’re finally realising that our stories, our style, our creativity matter. And not just in a “this is cute” kind of way, but also in a “this can build an entire economy” kind of way.

From the moment I stepped into the Railway

Courtyard, I knew this wasn’t just another show. This was a movement. You could feel the energy, the pride. the possibility.

And I promise you, that runway was more than a stage — it was a spotlight on what Guyana has been hiding in plain sight: pure, raw, world-class talent.

The designs? Fire. The vibes? Immaculate. The models? Serving. The crowd?

Obsessed.

But it was more than that.

This event showed us what’s possible when our government actually invests

in the creative economy.

President Ali’s announcement of the Guyana Fashion Council made me emotional because it finally feels as though creatives are being seen -- for real. Like we’re not just some afterthought or decoration, but a ‘legit’ part of building this country’s future.

And let’s be honest: we have the goods. We have a culture that’s vibrant and unmatched. A mix of heritage, struggle, beauty, and rhythm that’s literally made for storytelling and fashion is one of the most powerful ways to

tell that story.

Whether it’s a kente-inspired print, an Amerindian beadwork motif, or even an outfit made entirely from recycled rice bags, our designers are not playing around.

Plus, the fashion industry isn’t just about looking good.

It creates jobs. It powers tourism. It connects us to global markets. And in a world where people are constantly searching for what’s authentic, Guyana has something real to offer.

So, here’s what I’ll say to wrap this up: • Origins wasn’t just

“pretty clothes” — it was proof that fashion is a legitimate economic engine.

• The government has finally shown it’s willing to back creative industries with action, not just talk.

• Young creat ives (like me!) finally see a future here — not a one-way ticket out.

Honestly, this weekend made me feel hopeful. And I don’t say that lightly. As a Gen Z Guyanese who grew up hearing that fashion “isn’t a real career” — Origins proved the haters wrong. We can build an industry here.

One that’s bold, inclusive, innovative, and proudly ours.

So, to every designer, model, makeup artist, photographer, seamstress, vendor, DJ, creative — thank you. You showed up and you showed out.

And to the people in power: please don’t let this be a one-time flex. Invest in us. Bet on us. Guyana has drip — it’s time the world sees it.

A theory of antiIndian violence every five years

THERE isn’t an event or an occurrence that displays the difference in profound political instinct between the PNC and the PPP than Arrival Day. The PPP as the ruling party has over the long years, resisted demands from Indian rights activists to officially name the calendar event as Indian Arrival Day. Most Guyanese know the holiday is in recognition of the day of May 5 that Indians from India came to this country.

The reason is clear and simple.

The PPP feels that Guyana is a sensitive ethnic mosaic and one has to tread carefully.

The refusal by the PPP leadership to include the word ‘Indian’ is to avoid accusations of ethnic crudeness and ethnic chauvinism.

Even if you dislike the PPP, it does not erase the fact that as a political party, it is sensitive to the ethnic fulcrums of Guyana.

The P P P’s oppo-

sition, first the PNC, WPA, AFC are unable to m atch this PPP’s strong sense of delicately manoeuvring the racial labyrinth.

T h e P N C , W PA , AFC have absolutely no sensitivity to Guyana’s ethnic melting pot. These people are so intellectually mediocre that crude racial vocabulary comes naturally to them.

I will use that perennial, racially driven vocabulary to formulate a theory of why every five years, even if the occasion is not election related, Indo-Guyanese face violence Five years ago, two cousins were found m urd ered at Cotton Tree in Region Five.

The PNC, the Guyana Human Rights Association and the Stabroek News invented the fiction that the boys were killed after the long five months elections saga in 2020 ended with the PPP’s victory and Indian people killed the two boys out of celebration.

Joseph Harmon and David Granger went up to Cotton Tree and their words were insensitive.

F iv e yea rs a f te r, in April 2025, Indian people were again beaten over the death by d ro w n i ng of a n 11-year-old girl in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, Region Three.

Why were Indians beaten in Cotton Tree and parts of Region Four and Georgetown in April 2025? This is where the Freudian analysis comes in.

Sections of African Guyanese at a deep, Freudian level believes that the parties they support, the PNC, WPA, AFC and other prominent African personalities in civil society and the media that they admire do not like Indian people and see Indian people the way Germans saw the Jews in the 1930s.

Hanna Arendt in her superb philosophical book, “The Banality of Evil,” argued that

very ordinary Germans without any politics in their lives killed Jews or welcomed the killing of Jews because they felt it was the right way to feel because their German leaders felt that Jews were the problem in German society.

I t i s o ut s i d e t he scope of an 800-word newspaper column to expand on this theory, but to advance its validity I will offer current examples to show how the vocabulary of PNC, AFC and WPA leaders and anti-PPP Africans in civil society feed the Freudian anti-Indian psyche of sections of African people.

Could the anger of the two cousins have subsided in Cotton Tree if two high-profile PNC leaders did not go up to Cotton Tree and address African villagers?

Look at the current P NC leader Au brey Norton. He has alienated some huge Indian figures in the PNC; to

name just five -- the former PNC treasurer, Fiiaz Mursaline, former Mayor, Ubraj Narine, Gee ta C han dan -E dmond, Amna Ali and Supriya Singh.

Norton comes across as anti-Indian through his crude support for anti-Indian sentiments within his party. He absolutely refuses to disassociate himself from the ethnic insanities of David Hinds.

Then there is the WPA. It has become a party hostile to the East Indian race in Guyana. Then there is Nigel Hughes. Hughes has gone so far down the river of ethnic extremism that he is part of the ethnic triumvirate – Hughes, David Hinds and Rickford Burke.

Then there was a post last week from a senior UG official that she sees PNC parliamentarian Amanza Walton-Desir a good move for Guyana. The senior UG official says Walton-Desir embodies

the qualities of leadership Guyana needs.

The woman chose Walton-Desir over Dr Vindhya Persaud.

Walton-Desir survived calls for her prosecution by the ERC over anti-Indian remarks. Dr Vindhya Persaud has been in power with a portfolio of helping needy people.

She has never uttered even one word that is derogatory of any ethnic group. When instabilities break out and these PNC WPA, AFC and African civil society Africans are involved, it is obvious that the anti-Indian Freudianism of sections of African people will run amok.

David Hinds: In his own words Dr. David Hinds continue to issue odious invectives and venomous epithets in order to build cadences of hate against Afro-Guyanese who dare to criticize the anyone in the PNC leadership or anyone who claims the title “Black Leader”.

I know because he targeted me. Hinds own practice of politics and his own track record of criticizing the PNC and so-called black leadership is far more severe and politically debilitating than anything coming from me.

Hinds posture finds logic in two simple explanations: One, Hinds believe he is some sort of superior omniscient African Ayatollah who sits at the apex of African-Guyanese intellec-

tualism as the originator of political narratives for which Afro-Guyanese must be lumped into one groupthink; two, the first disposition finds grounding and expression steeped in racism.

Black people are demons when they criticize black leaders while supporting a government lead by an Indo-Guyanese.

David Hinds’ recent tirades are not only duplicitous but also dishonest and calculated to rile up negative racial sentiments towards PPP for its revitalized attempt at inclusiveness.

These are David Hinds’ words, “The PNC does not have a monopoly on AfricanGuyanese political behaviour and the AFC’s ability to hold the Indian -Guyanese dissi-

dent vote is contingent on its ability to show them … that the party is not a PNC “tag-along … Burnhamist ideas are a thing of the past that many African-Guyanese have no relationship to and don’t care about—the political world has moved on.”

(Nov 2017) David Hinds spent every waking moment criticizing the APNU+AFC government for its failures, he started from day one and never let up until the coalition left office in 2020.

He criticized and deconstructed the government from within, even in some very difficult moments when it needed to be propped up.

When APNU+AFC left office, it was a mere political shell, partly suffering

from the hallowing out of its bowels by the pen of David Hinds.

The following are entirely David Hinds’ own words, without comment.

“After six months at the helm, the report card for the government is mixed. Some may say, with much justification, that it is too early to judge a government … six months is enough time to provide proper answers ... I am still waiting on the President to articulate to the country a clear political strategy and direction, and the principles that would guide them.” (Nov 2015).

“It’s been two years since half of the Guyanese electorate struck a historic blow for change … many of us not only breathed a sigh of relief, but we actually entertained the thought that the new government could turn out to be a medium for transformation … the stage was perfectly set for something transformational. But, alas, two years later I must confess that I was dead wrong.

After two years in office, the government has shown no inclination towards, or interest in transformation.

The first two years of this government’s tenure would be remembered for a few negative things—the huge salary raise it gave itself, the building of the unnecessary Durban Park stadium, the Parking Meter fiasco, the VAT on private education, the attack on street vendors, the insensitivity over the Walter Rodney CoI, the indecisiveness about what to do about corruption and the clumsy handling of sugar reform. While the government has chalked up these negatives, it has not been able to do one big thing that impacted the popular consciousness in a positive way. There have been no aggressive education reform initiatives. Social Cohesion has been a joke.

Healthcare reform has not even surfaced. Unemployment and unliveable wages have remained intact. Part of it has to do with a lack of political experience and an absence of vision. (May 2017)

If the coalition does not change course … it will continue to lose the confidence of its supporters and most likely lose the next election … the public verdict is negative … government supporters are restless …

The economy is not taking off because of both political destabilization and bad policy.” (Sept 2017) “Today is the last day of the year—another year of frustration and dashed hopes has come to an end … 2017 has been a disappointing year for the government on almost all fronts … It was the year when 4,000 sugar workers were dismissed …

You simply cannot dismiss 4,000 workers in a small economy like Guyana’s and not expect such action to have immediate, direct effect on households, extended families and communities.

When one adds the number of cases in which government’s action was deemed unconstitutional, 2017 may well be the worst year for the coalition.” (Dec 2017) “David Granger, by no means a charismatic leader was elevated into a political rock-star. Now, just three short years later, our country has lost hope again. The government that came to power with such mammoth goodwill has turned out to be the most unimaginative since independence. It has given Guyana nothing big and transformative to hold on to. It governs as if it has no sense of its own place in history. Its laudable vision outlined in its election manifesto has not been translated into policy. It stumbles from one political error to another.” (May 2018) “The PNC is in a coalition with other parties precisely because it has not been able to win a free and fair election on its own … the PNC is endangering the longevity and legitimacy of the coalition by governing as a PNC government rather than as a coalition … PNC’s bigness is important, but by itself it is just a big opposition party … The independent vote could be lost in 2020. Those voters may pun-

ish the coalition not just for the PNC’s betrayal, but for the AFC and WPA’s inability to take independent stances since 2015.” (Oct 2018) Its failure to make good on that promise is one of the major reasons it lost its way so quickly … we soon found out, those who were entrusted to manage this transformation had other ideas, or perhaps no ideas at all. They were collectively not interested in transformation and perhaps incapable of summoning what it takes to begin the process. Already, we are hearing that Ministers would be summoned to go into the communities. But as one of my close friends asked—what are they going into the communities to tell the people? You must have something to tell those people who in three years moved from a high of elevated expectations to a low of frustration and disdain. (Dec 2018 before the No-Confidence vote) “As soon as we handed them the instruments of power, they went crazy, and in three short years, they destroyed it all. So, I am not surprised that the government fell the way it did.

I don’t blame Charrandass Persaud, … He expressed the frustrations many of us felt, both at the personal and political levels.” (Dec 2018 after the NC vote) “I think the Coalition has to publicly apologize to its supporters and the country at large for betraying their trust.” (Jan 2019) “I have been alarmed at the thinking of some members of this Coalition Government – that it is not the role of government to create jobs for citizens.

This is a new thinking that is out of place in a country like Guyana … It is a thinking that has led and would continue to lead to the worst anti-people policies. To begin with, it is absurd for persons to ask citizens to vote them into government and then turn around and tell the very voters that it is not the role of government to provide for them.” (Sept 2019)

Funeral for 11-year-old Adriana Younge set for today THE funeral for 11-yearold Adriana Younge, whose heartbreaking death has stirred national mourning, will take place today, 05 May 2025, with relatives, friends, and supporters travelling from all across Guyana and overseas to pay their final respects.

Adriana, a promising student who had just completed the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), will be laid to rest following a service expected to be both emotional and unifying.

Her untimely passing has united Guyanese from all walks of life in grief and outrage, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death continue.

The young girl was found dead on April 24, 2025, in the swimming pool of the Double Day Hotel at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) , just a day after she went missing. She had visited the hotel the previous day with family members.

Adriana’s f am ily has strongly opposed plans to protest and postpone burial.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Adriana’s aunt, Amika Lewis, urged the public to respect the family’s wishes, stating, “It has been brought to our (the family’s) attention that persons are planning to protest and stop the burial of

Adriana Younge Adriana Younge until another postmortem is done! We do not agree to or condone this action. We will bury Adriana in a peaceful manner on Monday.

“Honour Adriana and the wishes of her family. NO PROTESTS.” She asked that supporters honour Adriana and her family by allowing the funeral to proceed quietly.

Her body will depart the Ezekiel Funeral Home at 11 a.m. and proceed to her residence at Hyde Park, Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) for viewing.

The funeral service will be held at the Rice Mill Tarmac in the area, followed by interment at the Vergenoegen Cemetery. Adriana, a pupil

of the Parika Salem Primary School, had recently completed the NGSA, and was eagerly awaiting her results, which are scheduled for release in June.

It was always her dream to attend the prestigious Queen’s College.

Following the discovery of her body at the hotel, the building was set on fire and enraged ‘protestors’ looted the establishment. The home of the hotel’s proprietor was also torched.

Three internationally respected forensic pathologists have unanimously concluded that she died by drowning with samples sent for testing at both Mount Sinai Hospital and the National Medical Services Laboratory in the United States.

A proud member of the Mahaica Women’s Group

which consists of 40 women cash crop farmers Argyle has expanded her role from cultivator to Agro-processor, using her home as the base of operations for a growing line of value-added products.

These include organic soaps, green seasonings, achars, jams, pepper sauce, and most notably, handpoured scented candles.

Using the “melt and

pour” method, she creates three candle sizes in calming, richly scented options like peppermint, lavender, lemon, jasmine, cherry, citronella, lime, chocolate, and vanilla.

The candles are neatly packaged in locally sourced glass jars and sold for $800, $1500, and $3000, depending on size.

Argyle told the Guyana Chronicle that she launched

her small business five years ago after registering with the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC), a decision that opened doors to training opportunities and expos—both local and overseas.

Her products have since been showcased across the region, most recently during her third visit to Barbados for a major trade expo.

She related that they

The agro-processor added that she also makes organic soaps in turmeric, aloe, papaya, neem and ninwah, ideal for all skin types.

also packaged and sold.

Argyle will soon embark on a new project where she will create her floral line of scented candles for the market and it was her third time in Barbados for the expo and she was able to network and market her products. She will soon be exporting her products overseas.

Arrival Day Message from the AFC TODAY, as Guyana observes Arrival Day, the Alliance For Change joins with all Guyanese in commemorating this important occasion. It is a day that marks the arrival of the first East Indian indentured labourers to British Guiana on May 5, 1838 — a date that holds deep meaning, particularly for the East Indian community whose ancestors began their journeys on the Whitby and the Hesperus.

We celebrate and honour the immense contributions of East Indians to every facet of our national development — in agriculture, education, politics, religion, business, and culture. Their story is one of resilience and determination, of survival and success in the face of hardship. It is a story that helped shape the soul of this nation and continues to influence our society in powerful ways.

But Arrival Day, while rooted in a specific historical moment, must be understood within the wider context of all those who came to these shores — and those who were already here. We cannot mark this day meaningfully without also acknowledging the other peoples who contributed so significantly to the making of Guyana.

Long before the arrival of indentured labourers, enslaved Africans were brought to these lands under one of the most brutal systems known to humankind. They built the foundations of this country with their blood, their sweat, and their stolen freedom. Their suffering was unique in its total denial of personhood, and the legacy of slavery still lives with us today.

We also remember the Indigenous peoples — the first inhabitants of this land — whose existence predates colonisation

and conquest, and whose stewardship of these lands stretches back centuries.

Their presence was never an arrival; it was an origin. Their rights, cultures, and lives must be continuously honoured and protected.

In the decades that followed emancipation, the Portuguese, Chinese, and free Africans came under the system of indentureship, each bringing with them their own languages, traditions, skills, and hopes. Their labour and their contributions became essential threads in the fabric of our shared national identity.

It is important, especially today, to make a clear and honest distinction: while indentureship was exploitative, coercive, and deeply unjust, it cannot and must never be equated with slavery.

Slavery was a system of total ownership of human beings, passed down from generation to generation,

‘One Country, Many Cultures’ - ERC marks Arrival Day with call for harmony THE Ethnic Relati o ns C ommiss ion (ERC) extends greetings to all Guyanese on Arrival Day 2025.

This national holiday recognises another phase in the chequered history of our ancestors who journeyed here.

The arrival of hundreds of thousands of indentured workers to British Guiana from far off lands unintentionally added to the country’s rich diversity and cultures.

Although our East Indian ancestors first lan ded on t his day in 1838, other ethnic groups arrived during that century too, bringing their customs and

cultures that later blended into the unique Guyanese nation. We became inevitably one country made up of many cultures.

T h e pr e se n c e of varying cultures, customs and religions is the sum total of Arrival Day; but that commemoration is rooted in sacrifice, deprivation and struggle by our fore-parents.

Yet, the Guyanese m ulti-ethnic identi ty has survived into the 21st century with greater levels of appreciation and acceptance.

The ERC’s purpose is to bridge the cultural and ethnic gaps, provide support and address shortcomings

to ethnic harmony.

T h e c om m i s si on therefore urges every Guyanese to treat our diversity this Arrival Day as the root of our collective strength, giving more meaning to our national motto.

It is also incumbent upon everyone to pay homage and remember the yeoman service of those who came over a century ago and added to our shared heritage.

As one nation, we can continue our collective mission to pursue a bright future and attain that one destiny on the horizon.

Arrival Day, then, is not just about the commemoration of one group’s presence in Guyana. It is a moment to celebrate the full spectrum of our ancestry — to honour the many who arrived, the few who remained, and the many more who endured. It is a day to reflect on how far we have come as a people forged in the

crucible of migration, labour, injustice, endurance, and ultimately — hope.

Gov’t committed to having a new Berbice River bridge constructed - GS Jagdeo says General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, has reaffirmed that a new four-lane concrete Berbice River bridge will be completed during the party’s next term in office, should it be re-elected.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Dr Jagdeo said the government remains committed to executing the long-anticipated infrastructure project, even if mobilisation does not begin before the 2025 General and Regional Elections.

“If you award a contract, it takes weeks, maybe months to negotiate the details of the contract,” he explained, noting that financial arrangements, including mobilisation advances and bond securities, would also require time.

“The way I see it, it might be very difficult to get it done [before the election], but the commitment is there. The bridge will be built—a four-lane, concrete bridge—and it

will be completed in the next term in office,” Jagdeo declared.

The existing floating Berbice River bridge is set to reach the end of its operational life in 2027 and as such, making it an opportune time for a more permanent solution.

The General Secretary previously noted that the new bridge will be similar to the New Demerara River bridge and serve as part of the government’s br oad e r de vel opm ent strategy for the Berbice Region.

President Dr Irfaan Ali first floated the idea of a new Berbice River bridge in 2022 and explained that it would be built under the same system used for the new four-lane high-span bridge being constructed across the Demerara River.

Dr Ali had highlighted that several significant projects are taking place in the county of Berbice, including expansion at Palmyra, the possible development of an industrial park and port facilities.

The bridge will play a crucial role in the development of the two regions.

Arg yle sources wax, molds, and essential oils internationally, but purchases her jars locally. Despite rising material costs, she strives to keep her prices fair, with her peppermint-scented candles being a top seller for their calming, soothing effect.

Beyond entrepreneurship, Argyle is a practicing herbalist—a legacy she inherited from her grandmother, Rose

Bookey, a revered healer from Mahaica.

Argyle said her granny was a true herbalist who had many clients and on Sundays, people came from far and wide to benefit from her services which included rubs, massages, belly fixing of women, who yearned to become a mother, bathing of babies for various illnesses among others.

She added that she remembered the house was crowded and men, women and children waited for the services offered at a meagre fee and it was passed onto her when her granny passed away in 1992.

“I haven’t been able to master certain traditions handed down to me through generations to the women in the family, but my mom is also an herbalist, and I am getting there,” she said.

Pepper sauce and achars Now a mother of 10, grandmother of 13, and great-grandmother of one, she’s proud to be passing down her herbal knowledge to future generations.

She pointed out that her granny was good at baking and made the best local cakes which included cassava pone,

Argyle also celebrates the journey of the Mahaica Women’s Group, noting that the members now operate largescale shade houses and have received formal training from

the Ministry of Agriculture.

Each household received a Solar Home Energy System consisting of A 160-watt solar photovoltaic pane, a charge controller unit, a 48 ampere-hour lithium-ion battery, two 9-watt LED lamps, one 12-watt desk fan and two USB ports for charging mobile and electronic devices These systems are designed to offer comfort, convenience and

essential connectivity thus bridging the energy gap and fostering a sense of inclusion and progress in communities that have long been marginalized.

Designed for convenience and reliability, the systems provide essential lighting, ventilation, and connectivity—bringing a welcome change for families who previously lived without stable access to electricity.

The distribution exercise was led by Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Madanlall Ramraj, alongside Member of Parliament Nandranie Coonjah, Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva, Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit, Prime Minister’s Representative Arnold Adams,

and other officials.

Residents satisfied with AG’s Essequibo coast outreach

Residents along the Essequibo coast are satisfied after having an opportunity to raise longstanding concerns directly with Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Mohabir Anil Nandlall, SC, on Thursday.

The outreach, which was held in the communities of Hampton Court and Pomona, drew scores of residents who voiced issues ranging from land disputes to security and agriculture.

In many instances, residents received immediate attention and were assured of follow-up action.

He said in 2020, only 24 contractors were operating along the Essequibo coast, but now

there are over 300.

Addressing public safety, Minister Nandlall acknowledged existing challenges within the Guyana Police Force, but affirmed that reforms are actively being implemented.

“Yes, there is ineptitude, there is inefficiency, there is corruption, I’m not going to defend that. That is in the police force. We are working every day to clean that up,” he stated.

He pointed to advancements in surveillance and crime-fighting capabilities, including the introduction of aerial and marine units, international training programmes, and enhanced intelligence systems.

New tools such as facial recognition CCTV, satellite imaging, and drone surveillance are being deployed to strengthen detection and prevention efforts.

Similar community outreaches are being led by ministers countrywide, as part of a broader push to improve service delivery and ensure citizens in every region are heard and supported. (DPI)
