ATTORNEY GENERAL and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, has dismissed claims by fugitive offender Azruddin Mohamed that he is the victim of political persecution, asserting instead that Mohamed’s current legal and financial difficulties are the direct consequences of United States sanctions and an active extradition request for serious international financial crimes.

The Attorney General noted that the OFAC sanctions, which were imposed in June 2024, prohibit the Mohameds and their commercial entities from engaging in financial transactions and expose any individual or institution dealing with them to severe penalties.

These sanctions, the statement emphasised, apply not only to US citizens and businesses but also to non-US entities that continue to transact with sanctioned persons.

Despite this, the Attorney General said Mohamed appears to expect that his businesses should continue to operate as if nothing has changed.

“He expects himself and his commercial enterprises to operate as if ‘it is business as usual’ — a clear indication that this individual is either living in a bubble or is simply incapable of appreciating reality,” the release said.

According to the Attorney General, Mohamed was indicted before a US grand jury on October 2, 2025, well after the sanctions took effect, further underscoring that his legal troubles are rooted in international law enforcement action rather than any domestic political agenda.

The statement also addressed Mohamed’s public criticism of local banks and insurance companies that have severed ties with him and his businesses. The Attorney General defended these

institutions, pointing out that their actions were consistent with internationally accepted compliance standards.

“When the commercial banks and insurance companies took the internationally recommended decision to sever relations with Azruddin Mohamed, his businesses and those associated with him… he blames the Government,” the release said, adding that these institutions have a duty to protect themselves from “irreparable injury” and reputational damage on the international stage.

The Attorney General further rejected allegations of harassment by the Guyana Police Force, stating that the police are simply enforcing laws that apply to every citizen. “The Guyana Police Force has a statutory duty to ensure compliance with the Laws of Guyana for the public good and for public order in the country. These include the law governing motor vehicles used on our public roadways.

Every citizen is expected to comply with these laws or face the legal consequences.

These include legal requirements regarding insurance for vehicles, licensing and fitness requirements.

“When the Guyana Police Force enforces these legal provisions against the Mohameds, it attracts the usual mantra of persecution and victimisation. This plea is not available to the ordinary citizen but only to the entitled Mohameds.

They seem to have persuaded themselves that these laws must not apply to them and any attempt to do so, is met with the allegation of victimisation,” the statement said. In a pointed rebuke,

the release said such claims are not available to ordinary citizens and reflect a belief by the Mohameds that the law should not apply to them.

The Attorney General also pointed out that the Guyana Revenue Authority has launched a comprehensive investigation into the Mohameds in relation to alleged gold smuggling and the evasion of billions of dollars in taxes and customs duties, particularly in connection with the importation and transfer of motor vehicles.

As part of that investigation, a lawful block was placed on the transfer of vehicles. However, the Attorney General disclosed that the vehicles were nevertheless transferred through corrupt means.

“Notwithstanding, the Mohameds managed to corruptedly have these vehicles transferred,” the statement said, adding that some were transferred into the name of Maksim Dmitriyev, a family member who is expressly prohibited from conducting business with the Mohameds under the OFAC sanctions regime.

When the GRA detected what the Attorney General described as a “fraudulent design” and signalled its intention to pursue those responsible, Mohamed again resorted to claims of persecution, the release said. The Attorney General made it clear that enforcement will continue, without exception.

“Needless to say, the laws of Guyana will continue to be enforced by the relevant authorities against every citizen who violates them,” the statement said.

The military operation involved more than 150 aircraft taking off from 20 bases around the Western Hemisphere, including F-35 and F-22 fighter jets, and B-1 bombers, the top U.S. General said.

He then disclosed that Maduro and his wife “gave up,” and were subsequently taken into custody by the Department of Justice and at 03:29 ET, they boarded the USS Iwo Jima.

Reuters had reported that while the operation came as a surprise, sources familiar with the matter, said that the planning had been in the works for months and included detailed rehearsals.

Two other sources told Reuters the intelligence agency also had an asset close to Maduro who would monitor his movements and was poised to pinpoint his exact location as the operation unfolded.

With the plan assembled, President Trump four days ago approved the operation, but military and intelligence planners suggested he wait for better weather and less cloud cover, Reuters reported.

In the early hours of Saturday, the mission - which would be known as Operation Absolute Resolve - to capture Maduro started.

President Trump, surrounded by his advisers at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, watched a live stream of the operation, which he said “literally like I was watching a television show.”

Guyana’s business sector is growing and SMEs must be ready – GCCI President says

AS the nation enters 2026, President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Kathy Smith, says the focus now is on ensuring Guyanese businesses are prepared to grow alongside the economy, with stronger engagement from the chamber and a renewed emphasis on financial literacy, one of the biggest challenges facing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

SMEs account for some 70 per cent of GCCI’s membership and Smith says the goal is to sustain and build on that growth.

In a recent interview with the Guyana Chronicle, Smith said she and her team will be taking a more hands-on approach to interacting with and educating entrepreneurs, so they can grow alongside an economy she says is moving rapidly.

“Guyana is moving fast and they need to ensure that their business is ready for it.

I want Guyana’s businesses to be very robust so that we can compete with businesses within the Caribbean and internationally.

The strong desire for me is to ensure that micro, small, medium-sized businesses get in the space, stay in that space and build so that they can sustain themselves,” She explained.

While the GCCI continues to see a growing number of members, Smith highlighted that continued support is just as critical. To assess and address this, she said she will be taking a more personal approach, with walkthroughs and direct engagement with entrepreneurs planned for the year ahead.

“I have decided that I want to hear from my members. I have started my walkthrough, and I will continue that in 2026 to go to my businesses to ask them, ‘What can we do for you?’” she said.

She added that the GCCI’s current focus is on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, with participation from a number of international players.

The oil and gas sector, for example, Smith says, presents significant opportunities.

“The oil and gas company is now looking at small caterers, small janitorial companies, small logistics companies and pest control companies.

These are all opportunities where small businesses can get into. We want to ensure that when they turn, they are ready. I want to support them to ensure that they are structurally fitting in place and that they can take those opportunities,” she pointed out.

Smith also noted that small businesses in Guyana do not fail due to a lack of

hard work, but rather because of management challenges.

“Small businesses do not fail because they are not working hard. Small business owners are one of the hardest-working people in Guyana. A lot of small busi-

Rubio stated that Maduro had “multiple opportunities” to prevent such an escalation, but instead he chose to “act like a wild man” and “play around.”

The Secretary of State pointed to the previous actions by Maduro and said he thought nothing would have happened, but Rubio made it clear that President Trump is “not a game player” and acts on his pledges.

Gov’t reviewing Local Content Act to allow alternative pathways for Guyanese ownership

THE Government is actively examining potential amendments to the Local Content Act (LCA) that could allow alternative pathways for companies to qualify as Guyanese-owned, Director of Local Content and attorney-at-law, Michael Munroe, has disclosed.

Appearing recently on the Energy Perspectives podcast, Munroe said policymakers are engaged in ongoing discussions about whether the current ownership threshold under the Act remains the most effective way to achieve its objectives, particularly as the petroleum sector continues to expand and mature.

Under the Local Content Act as it presently stands, a Guyanese-owned company is one in which Guyanese nationals hold at least 51 per cent beneficial ownership.

Munroe indicated that this requirement is now among the provisions being critically assessed.

“So maybe there might be room for us to consider alternative pathways for companies to be considered a Guyanese company,” he said. “So maybe perhaps you could re-look at the issue of whether they necessarily have to have 51 per cent beneficial ownership?

Could we relax that maybe to 25 per cent?”

of the equity requirement would not amount to a weakening of the Act’s core purpose. Instead, he suggested that reduced ownership thresholds could be balanced by firm obligations on companies to invest locally and contribute meaningfully to workforce development.

“And the company, as a trade-off for that relaxation in equity taking this business, commits a certain level of investment locally,” he said. “They commit to a certain work programme in terms of upskilling locals.”

According to Munroe, the central aim would re-

main unchanged.

“So, we’re still achieving local content, but it’s just that we’re doing it in a different way,” he noted, adding that these discussions are part of active policy thinking. He stressed that any reform must continue

to reflect the foundational goals of the legislation.

“We still achieve the core objective of the Act, which is to promote local content, upskill our Guyanese, and ensure that they’re not just mere bystanders in our petroleum story,” Munroe said.

The Local Content Act was enacted to ensure Guyanese participation and benefit in the oil and gas sector, with an emphasis on ownership, employment, training and the use of local goods and services.

Munroe’s comments suggest that regulators are increasingly focused on how best to balance legal thresholds with practical outcomes.

He acknowledged that while the ambitions of the Act are clear, implementation must take into account on-the-ground realities.

“We need to be very introspective and we need to be really truthful with the reality on the ground is that while we want to achieve certain things, we need to be nimble enough to navigate these nuances within the local space,” he said.

One of the challenges confronting the local content regime, Munroe admitted, is the persistent issue of fronting, where companies appear Guyanese-owned on paper but do not genuinely reflect local control or benefit.

“Fronting is a real issue that has arrested the Local Content Secretariat,” he said, referring to the scrutiny already being applied by regulators.

“We have a situation where you would find Guyanese ostensibly presenting themselves as the owners of companies when, in fact, they don’t own the companies,” Monroe said. He described this practice as running “counter to the legislative intent and spirit of the Local Content Act.” Monroe said his legal background has been critical in identifying and addressing these loopholes.

Munroe added that authorities have been actively responding to such cases.

“And we’ve been doing a good job in terms of trying to deal with it on a more ad hoc iterative basis.”

However, he suggested

that future reforms may require a more structured approach. “But I think in going forward, we perhaps need a more structural approach.

And that can come by looking at the legal avenues through which a company can be considered local,” Munroe said, trailing off as he signalled that further policy development is anticipated.

He indicated that any proposed changes to the Act would be carefully designed to preserve its intent while improving its effectiveness. The emphasis, he said, remains on ensuring Guyanese are meaningfully involved in the petroleum sector through ownership, investment and skills development, even if the mechanisms for achieving that involvement evolve.

While no formal amendments have yet been announced, Munroe disclosed that a policy dossier is already in draft form and amendments are expected to gain traction in 2026.

He said stakeholder consultations will follow once policymakers give the green light.

Steadfast in Resolve

THE capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by United States military forces marks an important moment in Caribbean geopolitics. It requires careful attention and thoughtful reflection.

President Irfaan Ali quickly mobilised Guyana’s security forces and committed to clear communication with citizens and regional partners.

This shows a solid governance framework that has become a hallmark of his administration.

This response asserts Guyana’s sovereignty and reaffirms that our nation will not be drawn into re-

gional chaos or become a victim of larger power struggles.

The importance of this moment cannot be overstated. For years, the Maduro regime has used threats against Guyana’s territorial integrity to distract from its own economic collapse and humanitarian issues.

The Maduro regime’s aggressive stance towards Guyana in its illegal claim to Guyana’s Essequibo region was not about strategic goals, but rather desperation.

It was seen as an effort to shift internal dissatisfaction towards an external conflict. Now, with Maduro out of power and facing serious

criminal charges, the basis of those threats has collapsed. Guyana will watch closely and hope for a Venezuelan leader who respects other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

What stands out is President Ali’s methodical approach to this time of uncertainty.

By quickly mobilising the Defence Board and ensuring full coordination with our security forces, the government has shown that Guyana will not be caught off guard. Equally important is his communication with CARICOM’s Secretary General and his promise to keep citizens informed as events

Mohamed Irfaan Ali: The highest point in Guyana 2025

IT was a curious, multi-dimensional, negative, positive and absorbing year in Guyana in 2025. If an academic decides to research Guyana 2025, the material will fill a book length manuscript. It was one of the most interesting and least boring year since free and fair elections returned at the end part of 1992.

I would put 2025 in terms of unexpected phenomena in the same category with 1987.

It was in that year that Desmond Hoyte became a shock to the system. Not one person on Planet Earth could ever imagine the new embarkation of Mr. Hoyte, the central core of which was the complete de-Burnhamis ation of Guyana.

Mr. Hoyte in 1987 was a mystery to the nation. It was a reset of politics and economics in Guyana. No one had thoughts of a PNC president in 1985 being different

from any of the major leaders the PNC produced since its birth in 1957. Hoyte became a transformational president in ways the Caribbean never anticipated.

In 2020, no one had thoughts of Irfaan Ali becoming a phenomenon. He wasn’t new to the political scene since he was a Cabinet Minister before the PPP lost power in 2015. As a minister in the then government, one cannot say he stood above the rest of his colleagues.

Therefore, his presidency in 2020 was not seen as the emergence of something new, flashy and pyrotechnical.

As Ali settled into power, as the years rolled on, Guyana began to see power and personality only seen in Burnham and Jagan before.

We never know what lies deep in the psyche of the human until a situation arises.

Ali had a hidden talent that

he did not reveal when he was an ordinary Cabinet minister. The moment did not arrive then. The moment came when he became president.

By the time 2025 arrived and Ali had to face the electorate that will determine if they liked him and want more of him, Guyana was witnessing people’s power that Walter Rodney didn’t live to see. Irfaan Ali, from 2023, began to give Guyana people power.

He saturated himself over Guyana. He became ubiquitous. He became coterminous with Guyana. Despite Hoyte’s phenomenal emergence in 1987, by 2023, Ali had eclipsed Hoyte as the arrival of the new man who would change Guyana.

Then came the test, a test he never experienced before in his political career. He had to face re-election. Would he be rejected? Would he barely scrape through, or

unfold.

This balance between decisive action and transparent governance reflects democratic leadership under pressure, which is a stark contrast to the approach seen during the Maduro years in Venezuela.

The United States’ operation, while unprecedented in its directness in the Latin American context since 1989, should be assessed carefully from objective lens.

In 1961 and 1964, there was the United Force (UF), consisting of Guyana’s Portuguese mercantile class. It

In 2025, Irfaan Ali did two things that have formed part of his legacy. His personality ensured that the PPP got a larger majority. In 2025, large sections of the electorate voted for Ali, the man, as they did with Jagan, Burnham and d’Aguiar. They were convinced he was a good man, a good president and a people’s leader. It is the contestation of this columnist that the personality of Ali was pivotal to the PPP’s victory in 2025.

The second thing he did in 2025, which catapulted him into the history book is that he has achieved multi-racial voting that eluded all his

predecessors. When you see the Statements of Poll as to the cross-over votes he got, then you knew Ali has gone into the history books.

He was the highest point in Guyana in 2025. He was the brightest spot in Guyana in 2025.

There were dull moments, there were shocking moments and there were optimistic moments in this country in 2025; Ali stood out in 2025 as the optimistic aura. Sometimes the runner stumbles.

I hope never will. I hope when he rides away in 2030, he leaves behind what others to come after may be unable to emulate.

--President Ali says rising prices must be viewed alongside shifts as economy grows -- Gov’t initiatives, relief measures keeping pressure off Guyanese households WHILE households globally face higher prices, President Dr Irfaan Ali has stated that Guyanese families have been shielded from these adverse impacts as government policies have led to the reduction of taxes, expanded social support and cost-of-living relief measures, including lower utilities and fuel prices.

President Ali, during a recent press engagement with five female career journalists along with students, said that the nature of the economy needs to be looked at in its totality, not in isolation, citing several factors such as the changes in consumption patterns and their effects.

Despite significant global fiscal pressures, the government has not removed any of the relief measures that were put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In fact, Guyanese families would be under higher financial pressures if the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) administration had not removed the more than 200 taxes and onerous measures introduced by the former APNU+AFC government while they were in government from 2015 to 2020.

If that was the present-day reality, hundreds of billions would have been extracted from the ordinary Guyanese and according to President Ali, “If we did not remove the tax on fuel, hundreds of billions of dollars from your pockets would have been used to finance fuel.

If we did not remove the tolls on the bridges, hundreds of millions of dollars from Guyanese pockets would

have gone to tolls.”

The reductions in loan rates were also highlighted

by Dr Ali, who noted that this has resulted in Guyanese citizens being able to keep hundreds of millions in their pockets that would have otherwise gone to service the interest on their loans.

Direct financial support and subsidies extended by the government to ordinary citizens, including the newborn cash grant, are another example of support, the President noted.

Farmers have also benefitted from numerous measures, including fertiliser subsidies, removal of rates for drainage and irrigation (D&I) charges and expansion of D&I services, which, according to the President, has saved them from flooding, increased productivity and provided a subsidy on every bag of paddy produced.

For instance, in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) alone, farmers are now saving $1.6 billion in D&I charges and land rental fees because of the PPP/C’s deliberate and strategic policies and initiatives.

Back in 2017, the then A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) coalition government significantly increased the D&I charges in the Mahaica/Mahaicony area.

This plunged small and medium-scale farmers into distress as they were forced to pay between $3500 -$15,000 in land rental and D&I charges.

Other initiatives to cushion cost of living include and assist families include textbooks to school children, the school feeding programme,

the incoming transportation grant for children, the uniform grant, no increase in the cost of electricity; the reduction in the cost of water by 5 per cent; the removal of Value-Added Tax (VAT) on electricity and water charges, and subsidies to local fisherfolk.

“All of those are resources that would have been extracted from your pockets if the government had not provided these incentives.

That is money that saved the population directly,” President Ali said.

Outside of these measures and initiatives, the President turned his attention to other sectors, including mining,

which has benefitted from hundreds of billions of dollars in incentives, although gold prices increased.

The President stated, “So the cost of living has benefitted from policies that directly target it. Just imagine if we did not have these policies.”

CONSUMPTION PATTERNS On inflation, President Ali said that rising prices cannot be examined in isolation from changing consumption patterns in Guyana’s growing economy, such as the increased indulgence in imported food goods.

“There are certain things that we import and our con-

sumption patterns have changed tremendously.

If we go around this table and I ask every single person here how many mangoes they ate versus how many apples they ate during the holiday, I’m sure most people ate more apples than mangoes, and we’re dumping mangoes now because the season has massive production.

If we ask how many persons ate fish versus beef and steak, we will see changes in consumption patterns.

I’ve had discussions with vendors in the market, and you all know this: as economies grow, spending patterns change, consumption patterns change,” he said.

He further noted that he also conducted an analysis where he took a basket of goods purchased from the local markets and compared it to one supermarket.

The price differential was “enormous” in every basket of goods, he said, adding: “If you are importing some inflation and people are filling their basket from imported goods with that inflation, there’s very little you can do about that.”

The President did note that the government is addressing cost-of-living in a structural way—in consumption patterns, in creating higher value goods from your local production, where your factors of production and your cost of production are more controlled.

The president went on to say, “So we have to understand the nature of the economy. More people are eating out today than three years ago and there is nothing wrong with that because we have to be aspirational. But we cannot look at the issue of cost of living in isolation from all of these structural issues.

“If you used to walk to go to the church, you know, in Leonora on Fridays, everybody walks to the mosque, on Sundays everybody walks to church, it’s one village, everybody walking to the church. Today, everybody is driving.

Why is it that we have an entire vehicle registration series completed in less than three months when it used to take 10 years?

ON Saturday, there was high drama and an operation carried out by the US to detain and arrest Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is wanted by the US for cocaine trafficking and smuggling, and illegal weapons trading.

The operation was successful, resulting in the capture of Maduro and his wife. They were flown to the US, where they will be later charged and remanded.

The US operation was hailed largely in certain sections of the Venezuelan population and condemned in others. It yielded no casualties for the US, but the death toll was climbing for the

Venezuelan military, which put up resistance.

President Donald Trump, speaking to the press yesterday, said that Maduro had been given several other chances, but his chances had run out. He said that the US would seek to administer the Bolivarian Republic until a transition. He praised the smoothness of the operation and said that the people’s interest would be guaranteed first and foremost.

At home, President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali said Guyana was monitoring the US action in Venezuela, stating that he met early yesterday morning with the Defence Board, the national

security architecture, regional commanders and other senior security officials, amid the ongoing situation in Venezuela.

He later reported that Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, is in Region One engaging Guyana Defence Force troops and ranks of the Guyana Police Force operating in border communities, in the light of recent developments in Venezuela.

The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) and the People’s National Congress Reform released a slew of statements, both by MPs and the parties, calling for swift and strategic government action and

an urgent plan to deal with any eventuality of a possible retaliation for Guyana.

They also called for a quick response to set up possible humanitarian camps and the processing of persons fleeing Venezuela.

Firstly, the government must be cautious and strategic with the information it receives and releases to the Guyanese public at this time.

It must assess the situation with Venezuela carefully and stay far from getting itself in the mix of the conflict in Venezuela.

It must reiterate that it played no role in the US intervention and interference in Venezuela, but will protect

its interests and borders at all costs. The government has to take the stance that even though it has a border controversy with Venezuela, its hands are clean, as it respects both the people and the country.

It is even more essential that Guyana looks within and fortifies the system to protect its own territory and borders.

It is not in Guyana’s interests for the government to speak out at this premature and early junction, as other CARICOM, South American and international countries have done. It is better to be silently observant with information one is procuring than to speak openly and foolishly to Tom, Dick and Harry when one has ascertained the facts or truth about the move.

Secondly, the opposition parties in Guyana are quick to make flimsy proposals on this, but the final call rests with the government and the president.

Some of the proposals are not new and many of them were expected, but the ones coming from WIN are really unique, for the simple reason that the party is trying hard to sound seriously mature.

No real thought or intellectual stimulus went into the statements, or instead of criticising the government, they should have supported it.

For the record, the government has a good grasp of all of the immediate risks that could fall on Guyana.

Yet, Guyana is in a better and more secure place from a security standpoint more than ever at this time.

The government is not acting alone, but with the full support of the military.

WIN and the PNC are trying to scare people by practising opportunistic politics, again using the issue to get political mileage. There is no opposition leader to have meaningful consultations with and there is no need for an urgent meeting on the US operations in Venezuela.

Respectfully, the meetings will come at the appropriate time, when the nation is briefed fully by the government.

WIN and the PNC will continue to blow hot air over the next few days. Surely, they must not act as if the event that occurred in Venezuela surprised them and it is an event. Rather, what WIN and the PNC should know is that it is a lengthy process and must be decided by the Venezuelans which way they go from here.

In politics, there is a time and place for everything.

They must learn their place.

The problem is that Guyana’s opposition is reactionary and practises reactionary politics. The current government does not believe in reactionary politics and therefore practises preparatory politics and the politics of decisiveness.

The simple truth is, Guyana was prepared long before yesterday’s incident took place.

Thirdly, Guyana stands committed to upholding international law and justice.

It is ready to defend its sovereignty via the use of peace, dialogue and all other forms of protection that exist under the law.

What happened in Venezuela did not have to happen that way, but was bound to happen because countries that have dictators in power, frustrating the will of the people, especially in South America and Africa, run the risk of being challenged and supplanted by more democratic models and other people-centred governments. Maduro was a dictator and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Finally, Guyana is a small nation, but it never misses a chance to demonstrate its knowledge of how to avert disasters and security threats such as these.

From Maduro to the Mohameds: How U.S. Indictments End

IT was only a matter of time. Washington had been signalling its intent for months as it quietly thickened its military footprint in the Caribbean, and Trump’s State Department made sure Nicolás Maduro and the men keeping him in power understood exactly what that meant. The writing was on the wall, in letters so large that only the wilfully blind could pretend not to see them.

Maduro chose defiance.

He scorned every off‑ramp, clung to a crumbling presidency, and dared the United States to act.

At the crack of dawn on Saturday, U.S. special forces called his bluff. By sunrise, Maduro was no longer in Palacio Miraflores; he was a prisoner in American custody, on his way to face the indictment that had been waiting for him for six long years.

That indictment, unsealed in the Southern District of New York in March 2020, charged him on four counts of narco‑terrorism and cocaine importation

conspiracy, alleging that he sat at the apex of the Cartel de los Soles and conspired with FARC to “flood” the United States with cocaine.

A multimillion‑dollar reward was placed on his head.

For years, the case sat in fugitive limbo while Maduro played president and rigged elections. But an indictment, like time, does not simply disappear because the accused pretends it does.

He staged a sham election in July 2024, barred María Corina Machado from running, declared himself victorious and invited global condemnation. In January 2025, just as Trump was being sworn in for a second term in Washington, Maduro swore himself in for a third term in Caracas.

The former (Trump’s) was recognised as legitimate; the latter faced widespread international condemnation.

The United States promptly branded Maduro an illegitimate leader, re‑tightened sanctions, doubled the bounty on his head to US$50 million, and, on

November 24, 2025, formally designated him a member of a foreign terrorist organisation, expressly tying that label to the same 2020 narco‑terrorism charges.

This is the context in which Azruddin and Nazar Shell Mohamed now find themselves indicted in Florida and facing extradition.

They and their supporters may comfort themselves by inventing clever social media mythologies, making outlandish allegations, or even engaging in constitutional acrobatics, but the United States operates on a different schedule.

Once Washington decides that someone has crossed a line, whether from narco‑terrorism in Caracas to gold‑fuelled fraud in Georgetown, the question is not if they will be brought before an American judge, but when and how.

Trump has already made clear that the United States is “locked and loaded” and prepared to bend the old norms of international law and diplomacy when core interests are at stake. This

is not new. Under Ronald Reagan, the United States invaded Grenada in 1983 after Maurice Bishop was overthrown and killed and General Hudson Austin’s Revolutionary Military Council imposed curfews, jailed opponents, suspended elections and tilted hard toward Cuba and the Soviet Union.

Once the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, joined by Barbados and Jamaica, formally requested U.S. military help, Washington had all the political cover it needed to launch Operation Urgent Fury.

Later that decade, under George H. W. Bush, Operation Just Cause toppled Manuel Noriega in Panama.

Noriega had already been indicted in the United States on drug‑trafficking and racketeering charges, accused of running a cocaine pipeline and laundering cartel money through Panamanian banks.

When his regime declared a “state of war” against the U.S. and Panamanian forces killed a U.S. Marine officer, the die was cast. Noriega

was seized, flown to Miami, convicted on multiple counts, and sentenced to decades in federal prison.

Even that was not the end. While he sat in an American cell, Panamanian courts convicted him in absentia for murder and human‑rights abuses.

When his U.S. sentence was done, he was shipped to France, convicted again for laundering Medellín cartel funds, and then sent back to Panama to serve yet more time. He died at 83, having spent virtually every year after the invasion as a prisoner.

From Grenada to Panama, from Abbottabad under President Barack Obama to the gallows where Saddam Hussein met his fate under President George W. Bush, the pattern is brutally consistent: when the United States concludes that you are both a criminal problem and a strategic challenge, geography ceases to be a shield you can hide behind. Borders become logistics, and time becomes paperwork.

That is the real lesson for the Mohameds and for those

Guyanese still insisting that this is all “politics” that can be lawyered away with endless petitions before Guyana’s High Court. Lawyers are the only ones who will profit at the expense of the Mohameds’ deep pockets.

Azruddin can try to spin a narrative for his supporters in Guyana, but he cannot spin away a federal indictment. He can delay proceedings in Georgetown, but he cannot indefinitely duck a grand jury’s decision in Miami.

Once the United States has put your name on an indictment and on a plane ticket, all roads, no matter how winding they appear from here, lead in one direction: towards a courtroom door that only opens from the inside.

ONE of the most creative and innovative mental health initiatives to be rolled out in recent years is about to expand its presence in Guyana, with messages tailored to the needs of our population.

SMAHOO - Self-motivation and Healing Ourselves Online - is the brainchild of Canada-based Guyanese Shirvington Hannays, who explains that it has taken over 20 years to bring this project to fruition, with the tremendous mental and physical effort and long hours it has entailed.

A combination of his initials - Shirvington Mark Anthony Hannays - and the OO he ‘borrowed’ from Yahoo, Hannays has been able to establish various components of SMAHOO over several social media platforms, including Facebook and Spotify, and now SMAHOO reaches some 17 countries

worldwide.

Team members are drawn from around the world, from Nigeria to Canada and they each bring to the table unique skills and expertise, enabling SMAHOO to continue to ‘spread its wings’, reaching a wider audience.

It’s message that mental wellness can be obtained online is gaining increased attention and a growing following.

I find this pertinent to Guyana, where our population remains reluctant to engage in person-to-person counselling. An online forum provides both privacy and confidentiality, through advice and a listening ear, which is personalised yet distant and provided by experienced professionals.

Recently, Dr Barbara Peterkin has been invited to join SMAHOO and is excited about the prospect. With a wealth of knowledge in the

field of Naturopathic medicine, Dr Peterkin, who lives in Guyana, will bring her informed perspective to the group. She feels that such an initiative is both timely and necessary for Guyanese, who still hold outmoded views about mental wellness.

However, the recent Mental Health Awareness March held in Georgetown has shown that the stigma is gradually eroding and mental health is earning an equal measure of importance along with physical health.

This ties in with the World Health Organization’s Action Plan 2013-2030, whose primary goals are to ensure that the entire global population has access to vital health care services and to promote mental health and well-being.

And according to Dr Peterkin, “The whole aspect of natural health is like the ‘baby boom’. It is not going

away. It is growing.” She states that people are finding traditional medicine inadequate and ineffective for the task of solving myriad health matters, given the often-debilitating side effects of many pharmaceuticals I myself have found the constant stream of advertisements for new drugs disconcerting, especially with the alarming side effects, not least of which is the bland statement that the drug ‘may cause death’.

Dr Peterkin - A member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners contends, “ They cure you of one thing, and they’re killing you at the same time.” With a background in hairdressing and cosmetology, she runs ‘B’s Beauty Circle and Naturopathic Centre’ at her home in Sixth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown.

Guyana on high alert as PM Phillips assures border communities of stability

WHILE activating heightened security measures and the mobilisation of the national security forces, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips reassured those residents living in border communities that Guyana remains safe and stable.

The Prime Minister made these remarks on Saturday on a radio show while he was in Region One (Barima-Waini), engaging Guyana Defence Force (GDF) troops and ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) operating in border communities, following the recent developments in

Venezuela.

He stated that the security forces have been briefed to continue being vigilant, noting that the GDF and GPF will continue their history of

working together.

“At this time,” he said, “we impress upon them the need for increased vigilance and the continuation of working together in joint operations as we seek to maintain stability in Guyana.”

Speaking directly to the residents of those bordering communities, the Prime Minister assured them that the Government of Guyana, led by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and President Dr. Irfaan Ali, is monitoring the situation in Venezuela.

“We’re focusing on ensuring that stability in Guyana is maintained, and we don’t have any unusual ac-

tivity or activities inimical to our state of security here in Guyana. I can assure you that the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force are on a high state of

readiness; a high state of alert. They have the troops deployed throughout Guyana, both on the borders, the hinterland, and on the coastland, and they’ve been

conducting operations aimed at maintaining confidence in our society,” Phillips firmly stated.

The Prime Minister also appealed to citizens within

the communities to be vigilant of their environment and report any “unusual” activity to the local authorities.

On Saturday, the GDF commenced a series of routine leadership engagements across border locations and military bases nationwide, consistent with its standing responsibilities and ongoing commitment to national security and operational readiness. Those engagements include visits by Prime Minister Phillips and Colonel General Staff, Colonel Kenlloyd Roberts, MSM, to several border locations, as well as meetings between commanders and troops across all bases.

Such engagements form part of standard command oversight and are intended to assess readiness, engage directly with ranks, and ensure that established operational, welfare, and professional standards continue to be upheld throughout the Force, a statement issued by the GDF read. The statement further read: “In keeping with the posture articulated by His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the Guyana Defence Force continues to operate in a calm, disciplined, and measured manner, fully aligned with national policy and Guyana’s longstanding commitment to peace, stability, and lawful processes.

“The Guyana Defence Force remains vigilant and prepared to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities to safeguard Guyana’s territorial integrity, while supporting efforts and decisions taken at the national level.

“The Guyana Defence Force reassures all Guyanese

that these activities reflect routine leadership engagement and responsible military management, as the Force continues to serve the nation with professionalism and resolve.”

On Saturday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, were captured and flown out of the country in a U.S. military operation.

The Maduro regime, over the past few months, has been accused of operating a “narco-state” and committing a number of infractions, including drug-trafficking and illegitimacy in power.

According to a sealed superseding indictment, Maduro will face sweeping criminal charges on U.S. soil.

Maduro has been indicted on several charges, including narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices against the U.S. President Trump, along with several senior U.S. officials, held a press conference on Saturday afternoon to give further details on the operation. In the early hours of Saturday, the mission - which would be known as Operation Absolute Resolve - to capture Maduro started.

Late Saturday afternoon, a plane carrying captured Maduro and his wife arrived at Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York.

Reuters had reported that Maduro is expected to make an initial appearance in Manhattan federal court on Monday, according to a Justice Department official.

Ramsammy welcomes planned consultations on social media regulation

PROMINENT Guyanese politician, public health advocate, and Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, has welcomed the Government’s intention to pursue legislation aimed at regulating social media and online gambling, describing the move as timely and necessary to curb growing abuse in the digital space.

In a commentary issued this week, Dr. Ramsammy endorsed President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s announcement that the Government will begin broad national consultations this month on possible legislative action to regulate social media platforms.

The consultations, he noted, are intended to maximise the positive benefits of social media while reducing harmful effects such as online abuse, disinformation, and risks to children.

“Social media is a double-edged sword,” Ramsammy said, acknowledging its role in communication and

social engagement while cautioning against its darker impacts. “It is incumbent on governments to regulate the landscape in order to optimise the positive impacts and reduce or eliminate the negative impacts.”

President Ali made the announcement during a media engagement with five leading women journalists, indicating that the consultations would inform legislation designed to address social media abuse.

The initiative is expected to complement legislative measures on online gambling announced by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, which are slated for introduction later this year.

Ramsammy argued that relying on self-regulation by platform operators, or leaving oversight solely to parents and guardians, has proven inadequate. He said a clear “gatekeeping role” by the State is necessary to protect vulnerable users, particularly children, from online harm.

Similar measures are unnoting that several countries have already moved to reg- der consideration or have ulate social media access for been introduced in countries minors. He cited the first Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, held in Colombia last November, where 120 governments pledged to strengthen legislative frameworks to combat social media abuse.

In addition, he highlighted the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2024, which includes provisions addressing online child sexual abuse, grooming and non-consensual image sharing. The treaty is scheduled to come into force on January 25, 2026.

While welcoming the Government’s initiative, Ramsammy acknowledged

that public consultations in Guyana are likely to raise concerns about censorship and the potential stifling of innovation.

He said such concerns are legitimate but should not be used to avoid addressing the risks posed by unregulated digital platforms.

“We must work together to craft a regulatory framework that balances free speech, data privacy and platform accountability,” he said, adding that President Ali has invited all stakeholders to collaborate in shaping a model suited to Guyana’s needs.

Ramsammy concluded by expressing confidence that Guyana can develop a balanced and progressive approach, drawing on its history of bipartisan co-operation on complex social issues. He urged stakeholders to engage constructively in the upcoming consultations, with the aim of ensuring that social media contributes positively to a more informed, safe and equitable society.

Women-led businesses dominate small-business sector - SBB CEO reports

— Small Business Bureau expands reach nationwide as sector undergoes transformation WOMEN-LED enterprises continue to dominate Guyana’s small-business sector, accounting for the majority of loans and training participation facilitated by the Small Business Bureau (SBB), according to Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Ibrahim.

In a recent interview with the Guyana Chronicle, Ibrahim disclosed that women now account for approximately 60 per cent of loans accessed through the bureau, underscoring what he described as sustained and unprecedented growth within the sector.

been consistent across several of the bureau’s programmes.

He explained that while the Small Business Bureau operates targeted initiatives for youth, it has not found it necessary to establish programmes exclusively for women, given their already

high participation levels.

“Our training programmes are attended by over 67 per cent women.

Even when we did our loans, about 60 per cent were accessed by women,” Ibrahim said. “So, we do not see the necessity of having a specific

women-led programme when they are actually accessing the programmes. Pretty much all of our programmes are accessed more by women than men.”

The dominance of women within the sector, Ibrahim added, reflects their will-

ingness to take initiatives, embrace training opportunities and establish sustainable enterprises, particularly within community-based and agricultural ventures.

This strong participation comes as the bureau continues to expand its footprint across the country. Ibrahim revealed that the organisation now operates projects and initiatives in every administrative region, including some of Guyana’s most remote hinterland communities.

“We have projects all across the country. When I say all across, I mean from Region One to Region 10,” he said. “We are doing projects in the mountain areas— Kato, Karasabai, Paramakatoi. We are doing projects in Sand Creek, in Lethem, in Toka, as well as Wakenaam.

On the Essequibo Coast, we are in Queenstown, Lima Sands, and we are in Berbice.”

Many of these initiatives, Ibrahim explained, are designed to help small villages

and communities develop innovative agricultural and value-added projects, an area where women have also emerged as leading drivers of growth.

Looking ahead to 2026, Ibrahim expressed confidence that the sector will continue to grow, while cautioning that entrepreneurs must adapt to the pace of national development.

“The main thing I want to leave with entrepreneurs is that we have to understand Guyana is developing at a phenomenal rate,” he said.

“We are moving at such a rate—it’s unprecedented, nothing like before. If we expect to operate our businesses in the same way as before, this is not going to work anymore.”

He stressed that while Guyanese entrepreneurs possess the creativity and drive needed to succeed, long-term growth will depend on innovation, digital transformation, and skills development.

GTA sets ambitious targets for 2026 after record-breaking year for tourism — Sector closes 2025 with historic visitor growth, new digital tools and landmark policy rollouts

GUYANA’S tourism sector has closed 2025 as one of its strongest years on record, with the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) confirming record visitor arrivals, major policy milestones and a bold expansion agenda heading into 2026.

In its end-of-year sector wrap-up, the GTA reported that visitor arrivals between January and October 2025 rose by 24 per cent compared to the same period in 2024, with a total of 371,446 visitors entering the country.

This represents the highest number of arrivals ever

sector. Chief among these was the launch of Guyana’s first Destination Booking Engine, a digital platform aimed at modernising the way travellers book tours and experiences.

The GTA described the platform as a “dynamic digital tool designed to revolutionise tourism bookings,” signalling a decisive shift toward digitisation, improved market access for operators, and greater visibility for local tourism products.

recorded for that period and already surpasses Guyana’s full-year totals from previous years.

According to the Authority, the data points to a diversified and increasingly resilient source market. The United States accounted for 40 per cent of arrivals, followed by the Caribbean at 33 per cent. Canada contributed seven per cent, Europe six per cent, Latin America seven per cent, and other markets six per cent, reflecting growing international interest in Guyana as a destination.

Beyond visitor growth, 2025 was marked by significant structural and policy advancements within the

ral Agri-Tourism Policy, a framework designed to strengthen linkages between agriculture and tourism while expanding economic opportunities for rural and hinterland communities.

The policy was developed through collaboration between the GTA, the Inter-American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture (IICA), the Ministry of Agriculture, the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), and other key stakeholders.

The initiative aims to integrate farm-based experiences, value-added production, and community tourism into Guyana’s broader destination

offering.

With these foundations in place, the GTA has set aggressive targets for 2026, signalling a transition from growth to consolidation and sector-wide transformation.

According to the wrapup, the Authority intends to license 300 tourism businesses in 2026, supported by improved internal systems, faster processing timelines, and the establishment of a new Business Development Unit aimed at strengthening compliance and industry engagement.

Product development is also expected to accelerate, with six new tourism experiences slated for introduction, alongside upgrades to existing products to improve quality, competitiveness and visitor satisfaction.

Training and capacity building will remain a central pillar of the Authority’s strategy. In 2026, the GTA plans to train 2,800 individuals across the sector, with targeted programmes in service quality, tour guiding, taxi services, first aid and CPR, business management, social

media marketing, culinary arts, green events management and other priority skills designed to professionalise the workforce.

Marketing efforts are also set to scale up significantly.

The GTA plans to participate in 22 international trade and consumer shows, roll out multi-market advertising campaigns, host nine group familiarisation (FAM) trips, and support more than 100 local events, including four

major quarterly signature events.

Strategic brand partnerships, digital campaigns and targeted outreach across North America, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and diaspora markets will form the backbone of Guyana’s destination visibility drive.

The Authority noted that these initiatives will be supported by calls for investment, enhanced destination development and continued

collaboration with public and private sector partners, as Guyana positions itself as a leading nature, culture and experience-based tourism destination.

As 2026 approaches, the GTA’s message is unambiguous: the sector is no longer emerging, but maturing rapidly, with higher standards, stronger systems and bolder ambitions shaping the next phase of Guyana’s tourism story.

Republic Gardens businessman remanded on illegal firearm, ammunition charges

A 38-year-old Georgetown businessman was, on Friday, remanded to prison after being charged with possessing an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Lawrence Joseph, also known as “Tuggy,” of Republic Gardens, Georgetown, appeared before His Worship Clive Nurse at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, where the charges were read to him. He pleaded not guilty to both offences.

Joseph was charged with Possession of a Firearm without a Licence and Possession of Ammunition without a Licence, contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearms Act, Chapter 16:05.

Bail was refused, and he was remanded to prison. The charges follow his arrest by police on Thursday, January 1, 2026, in connection with a firearm and ammunition offence.

The matter has been adjourned to February 20, 2026.

GECOM to begin Claims and Objections exercise on Monday

THE Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will commence a nationwide Claims and Objections exercise on Monday, January 5, 2026, as part of the process to finalise Guyana’s Official List of Electors (OLE).

According to the Commission, the exercise will be conducted using the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE), which has already been posted at prominent locations in all registration divisions and sub-divisions, at every GECOM Permanent Registration Office across the country, and on the Commission’s official website.

The Claims and Objections period is intended to allow eligible persons who are not listed on the PLE to apply for inclusion, while giving existing registrants the opportunity to verify and update their registration information before the OLE is produced.

GECOM stated that any person who attained the age

of 18 years on or before December 31, 2025, and who is a Guyanese citizen by birth, descent, naturalisation or registration, is eligible to make a claim once their name does not appear on the PLE. Commonwealth citizens who have been ordinarily resident in Guyana for at least one year may also apply.

Eligible persons wishing to make a claim must visit the GECOM Registration Office responsible for their area of residence on or before January 18, 2026.

Applicants are required to present original source documents, including a birth certificate, valid passport, adoption certificate, Form F, or naturalisation or registration certificate, to facilitate registration for inclusion on the Official List of Electors.

Existing registrants are also being urged to examine the PLE carefully to ensure the accuracy of their information. Verification can be done at posted locations within their registration divisions

A 47-year-old chief security officer was, on Friday, granted $400,000 bail after being charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition following a police operation along the East Coast Demerara.

Edward McCollin, also known as “Butler,” of South Vryheid’s Lust, appeared before

His Worship Clive Nurse at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, where the charges were read to him. He pleaded not guilty to both offences.

McCollin was charged with Possession of a Firearm without a Licence and Possession of Ammunition without a Licence, contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearms Act, Chapter 16:05. The matter was adjourned to February 18, 2026.

The charges stem from an operation conducted by ranks of Regional Police Division 4 ‘C’ at about 06:40 hrs on Thursday, January 1, 2026, in the Sparendaam/Plaisance Railway Embankment area.

Police said ranks observed McCollin standing among several individuals when he noticed the police presence and attempted to move away hurriedly. He was allegedly intercepted and a search of his person allegedly revealed one suspected 9mm Taurus pistol along with a magazine containing five suspected 9mm rounds of ammunition.

McCollin was arrested and the suspected firearm and ammunition were lodged as investigations continue.

GECOM stated that objections must be supported by relevant original documentation, such as a death certificate, which must be presented at the time of the objection hearing.

During the Claims and Objections exercise, GECOM registration offices will operate Monday to Friday from 08:00 hrs to 18:00 hrs, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 hrs to 14:00 hrs.

Jobs to be created in non-oil sectors through special development zones -Labour Minister says

THE government is targetting the creation of thousands of jobs in non-oil sectors through the establishment of special development zones, with a portion of those opportunities set aside for persons living with disabilities.

This was according to Minister of Labour and Manpower Planning, Keoma Griffith, who made this known during a video address following President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s recent national address, during which he outlined labour and workforce initiatives aligned with the administration’s broader development agenda.

Minister Griffith said the special development zones will be supported by tax-free incentives and are intended to expand employment opportunities beyond the oil and gas sector, while ensuring that economic growth is inclusive.

“Special development zones with tax-free incentives will create even more jobs in non-oil sector, spreading opportunities everywhere for persons living with disabilities,” the minister said.

According to Griffith, the government is aiming for 5,000 jobs to be generated through these initiatives, with inclusion built directly into project design.

“We are aiming for 5000 jobs with 10 per cent of every project dedicated to them,” he said, referring to persons living with disabilities.

The minister explained that the initiative forms part of a wider strategy to build what he described as a skilled

and well-paid workforce, ensuring that no group is left behind as the economy expands.

“So, what is the vision?

We want to build a skilled, well-paid workforce where no one gets left behind,” the labour minister added.

These proposed development zones are expected to play a key role in the government’s efforts to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on oil revenues, while supporting job creation in areas such as manufacturing, agriculture, creative industries and services.

Minister Griffith noted that the labour market has shifted significantly over the past five years, with employers now reporting difficulties in finding workers, following what he described as the creation of more than 60,000 jobs across multiple sectors.

He added that the government’s approach to development places equal emphasis on job creation and skills training, warning that employment gains will not be sustainable without a properly trained workforce.

“Our philosophy is clear, growth without jobs is development that doesn’t deliver and jobs without skills won’t last,” the minister said.

He said the special development zones will complement other labour and manpower initiatives, including expanded technical training, digital skills programmes and the use of ICT to connect workers to employment opportunities without requiring relocation.

Guyana Is Watching

on the ground. It is not swift to action when the situation does not require it. It is cool and calm, knowing that it is prepared for anything that comes its way.

Internally, Guyana has already set systems in train to deal with any eventuality and is watching. There is no room for complacency, but there is similarly no rush for action which requires sober heads.

We should never expect that this moment marks the end of challenges and struggles with Venezuela. It doesn’t.

The US action in Venezuela did not totally change the trend or future of geopolitics and security. It altered the fate of the nation and caused its course.

Maduro is gone, but his government remains entrenched in Venezuela, which still claims Essequibo. What is needed now is for Guyana to contribute to the discourse on how to avoid the rise of other dictatorships in this

part of the region, and how to assist with the transition to a democracy and civilian government run by the Venezuelans.

Guyana must guide her sister in South America down the road to respect for international law and justice.

Guyana must use the information it gathers to help the Venezuelan people and assist them in any way possible, whilst respecting its own territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Guyana sees this moment, though it was not totally done according to international law and regulations, as a chance to stand back, watch and act responsibly and wisely.

Gov’t conducts joint operation in Georgetown targeting illegal mining, gold trading THE Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Natural Resources, on Saturday, conducted a coordinated enforcement operation in central Georgetown aimed at curbing illegal mining activities and the unlawful trading of precious metals.

The operation was carried out jointly with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), the ministry’s Compliance Unit, and the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the exercise resulted in several undocumented individuals being processed, the seizure of gold, and the successful verification of persons of interest. Authorities said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal mining networks and disrupt the unauthorised trade in gold and other precious metals.

“This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and the trading of precious metals in our country,” the ministry stated, noting that enforcement actions are being intensified as part of a broader national strategy.

The government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining, emphasising that such activities pose serious risks to the environment, national security and revenue collection.

“The Government of

Guyana maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards illegal mining activities,” the statement said. “We are committed to safeguarding our natural resources and ensuring compliance with all regulations governing the mining sector.”

Officials further indicated that the Georgetown operation is not an isolated exercise. Similar joint operations are expected to be rolled out across the country as authorities move to ensure full compliance with mining and trading laws.

“Similar operations will be conducted across the country to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations,” the ministry noted, adding that enforcement will remain consistent and sustained.

The government also highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration in addressing illegal activities within the sector, describing the level of co-operation displayed during the operation as a reflection of its commitment to protecting Guyana’s natural resources and upholding the rule of law.

U-19 vice-captain Van Lange thrives across two sports

THE multitalented Jonathan Van Lange who turned 19 on December 30, is the youngest of four siblings, including two sisters, born to Errol and Kamala Van Lange.

The burly Van Lang has been selected as Vice-Captain to Joshua Dorne for the West Indies in the ICC 2026 U-19 World Cup set to commence on January 15 with West Indies playing Tanzania in Namibia.

The versatile teenager was selected following a successful five-match U-19 series in Grenada where Van Lange scored 52, 57 and 80.

“My main goal for the U-19 World Cup is to con-

tribute wherever the team needs me to help secure victory. Whether it’s batting, bowling, or supporting in the field, my focus is on doing whatever it takes to help the team succeed” stated a very confident Van Lange.

He is the first Guyanese to be appointed Vice-Captain since 2020 when Ashmead Nedd was the deputy to fellow Guyanese Shimron Hetmyer.

Van Lange, who has represented Guyana in Table Tennis at the last Commonwealth Games, attended Mae’s school, The Bishop’s High School and School of the Nations. He is also a swimmer and one half of the national doubles table tennis champions alongside Shamar Britton.

“I come from a very sports-oriented family, so being active and competitive was encouraged from a young age. I was involved in several sports growing up, including swimming, table tennis and cricket. Being exposed to multiple sports helped shape my discipline, adaptability, and overall love for sport.

Balancing school and sports weren’t always easy, but it taught me resilience.

Academically, I did well overall and took my education seriously alongside sports. Managing both helped me develop strong time-management skills and a consistent, focused mindset that I still rely on today” posited the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) all-rounder.

Van Lange was introduced to table tennis at Mae’s Primary School.

According to him, “What first drew me in was the sound and rhythm of the ball during play. As I continued, I began to appreciate

the level of focus, handeye coordination, and quick decision-making the sport demanded.

Table tennis continues to help shape my overall development as an athlete as I continue to strive for improvement in the sport.”

Van Lange explained how he got involved in cricket, saying, “I grew up living next to a cricket pitch, so I was able to watch the game being played almost every day.

Seeing it so regularly sparked my interest from a young age, and over time I became more involved and developed a passion for the sport. My table tennis skills translate directly into my cricket, particularly in terms of reflexes, timing, and concentration.

Both table tennis and cricket play an important role in my overall development as an athlete” said the right-handed player who added that he enjoys playing both sports.

“I didn’t start as a seamer—I began as a wicketkeeper, then moved to off-spin, and about three years ago switched to seam bowling. I would say I enjoy batting more even though I take pride in contributing with the ball as well.”

“There are two cricketers that inspire me…Henry Clarkson from South Africa and Harry Brook from England. I admire these players because they combine skill with consistency, both on and off the field. Watching how they handle pressure, stay disciplined, and contribute to their team motivates me to improve my own game” continued Van Lang who enjoys fishing, go-kart racing and shooting.

ment in cricket was when he scored his first hundred in an U-17 club match.

When asked what was his favourite format, the ‘big hitting’ young man said “at the moment, I don’t have a particular preference. I enjoy all formats of cricket as each format challenges different skills and strategies, and I try to focus on giving my best no matter which format I’m playing.”

He sees himself playing all formats of international cricket for the West Indies in the next years adding that “if I weren’t a cricketer, I think I would be a fisherman. I love fishing and find it very relaxing.”

“My training is focused and structured, with a mix of skill work, fitness, and mental preparation. For cricket, I work on batting, bowling, fielding, and overall conditioning, while for table tennis, the emphasis is on reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and agility. While both sports require fitness and focus, the specific drills and skills are different, so I adjust my training to suit each sport.

“The main people who have supported me in my sports journey so far have been my family, my coaches, and my friends. My family encouraged me from a young age, especially growing up in a sports-oriented household. My coaches guide me, help develop my skills, and taught me discipline, while my friends keep me motivated and make the journey enjoyable” concluded Van Lange who departs Guyana tomorrow for a training camp in Antigua prior to the World Cup in Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Bournemouth had chances to go ahead but Rice’s shot from the edge of the box, from Martin Odegaard’s lay-off, gave Arsenal the lead.

The England midfielder, back from a knee injury, netted again following a cutback by substitute Bukayo Saka.

Teenager Eli Junior Kroupi gave Bournemouth renewed hope with a fine strike from outside the area - but they could not find a leveller.

Antoine Semenyo, playing perhaps his final game for Bournemouth before a £65m move to Manchester City, was quiet throughout.

The victory takes Mikel Arteta’s team six points clear of second-placed Aston Villa, although Manchester City can close the gap back to four points when they host managerless Chelsea on Sunday (17:30 GMT).

Arteta’s side enter the second half of the Premier League campaign the way they ended the first, with a victory. This was their fifth win in a row in the league.

The Spaniard will be happy too that he was able to do so while rotating players regular starters Leandro Trossard and Saka started on the bench.

Bangladesh seeks T20 World Cup shift after Mustafizur fallout (ESPNCRICINFO) - BANGLADESH will ask the ICC to relocate their T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka, after Kolkata Knight Riders were instructed to release Mustafizur Rahman as a result of deteriorating political ties between Bangladesh and India.

The BCB is expected to write to the ICC to raise their concerns about player safety in Kolkata, where Bangladesh is scheduled to play their first three matches of the World Cup next month.

Following the BCB’s emergency meeting of board directors over Zoom on Saturday, the media committee chairman Amzad Hussain told ESPNcricinfo: “We have three matches of the T20 World Cup in Kolkata, so we will write to the ICC regarding what has happened today.”

Bangladesh’s sports adviser, Asif Nazrul, said that he has doubts about the team’s safety in India, after the BCCI cited “recent developments” in their explanation for Mustafizur’s removal from the IPL, adding that he will instruct the BCB to write to the ICC about

moving their matches to Sri Lanka.

“I have asked the BCB to explain the entire matter to the ICC,” Nazrul wrote on his

official Facebook page. “The board should inform that where a Bangladeshi cricketer cannot play in India despite being contracted,

the entire Bangladeshi cricket team cannot feel safe going to play in the World Cup. I have also instructed the Board to request that Bangladesh’s World Cup matches be held in Sri Lanka.”

Nazrul added that he has requested the country’s information and broadcasting ministry to stop showing the IPL in Bangladesh.

Following the BCCI’s instructions, KKR confirmed that they have released Mustafizur from their squad for the 2026 IPL. KKR had acquired the left-arm fast bowler’s services for 9.2 crore in the IPL auction last month, though they faced a backlash for their selection in the last few days from Indian spiritual and political leaders.

Interestingly, the BCB had announced their home schedule for 2026 on Friday, including white-ball matches against India, a series that was postponed from 2025.

Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches are scheduled to be held in Kolkata and Mumbai, with their opening fixture against West Indies at Eden Gardens on February 7.

ILT20 Final

Desert Vipers to face MI Emirates (ESPNCRICINFO) – DESERT VIPERS and MI Emirates, the top two teams in this ILT20 season, will meet again in the final in Dubai on Sunday. Vipers have had a chance to put their feet up for four days after overpowering MI Emirates in Qualifier 1 in Abu Dhabi on December 30.

In the meantime, MI Emirates travelled to Sharjah and KO’d Abu Dhabi Knight Riders on January 2 to set up a rematch with Vipers.

In the lead-up to knockouts 1, MI Emirates’ captain, Kieron Pollard, suggested that a five-match winning streak left the team on a “dangerous territory,” fearing it might work against them. After the defeat to Vipers, they however regrouped and bossed ADKR in Qualifier 2, with Pollard showing the way with his leadership.

He had two spinners opening the bowling and empowered Afghanistan mystery spinner, AM Ghazanfar, to attack batters by placing himself at slip, short leg or silly point.

Arab Gul, the other Afghanistan mystery spinner, went wicketless, but was difficult to put away. Pollard also brought in UAE leftarm seamer, Muhammad Rohid, into the attack ahead of the more experienced Fazalhaq Farooqi, and the local boy responded with a first-ball wicket.

At 38, Pollard continues to be an explosive hitter - only Rahmanullah Gurbaz (20) has struck more sixes than Pollard’s 15 this season. Nicholas Pooran has left the ILT20 to play for MI Cape Town in the SA20, but Pollard has worked his magic for MI Emirates.

Likewise for Vipers, Sam Curran has led the way. Their regular captain, Lockie Ferguson, missed most of the tournament with injury - he has now been ruled out of the Big Bash League too - but Curran has torched their campaign with his all-round performances.

He is the second-highest run-getter this season and has been excellent with the ball in the powerplay along with Pakistan-born quick, Khuzaima Tanveer.

When Curran came up against MI Emirates in Qualifier 1, he clattered an unbeaten 38 off 12 balls at No.3.

Though he has been expensive in the end overs, his reinvention as a batter bodes well

for Vipers and perhaps for Rajasthan Royals too in IPL 2026.

Last August, Curran and Tom Moody, Vipers’ director of cricket, won the Hundred together at Oval Invincibles.

Can they lead Vipers to their maiden ILT20 title?

Or will Pollard deny them and inspire MI Emirates to their second title?

Dhabi, USA wicketkeeper-batter, Andries Gous, completed his rehab and returned in grand style against the same opposition at the same venue with an unbeaten 120 off 58 balls - the highest individual score in the ILT20, in front of his family.

Vipers will be hoping for an encore from Gous before he links up with the USA side for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Rashid Khan has left the ILT20 to captain MI Cape Town in the SA20, but his junior

Afghanistan colleagues AM Ghazanfar and Arab Gul have befuddled batters with their variations in the UAE. While Ghazanfar has excelled in the powerplay with his carrom ball and swinging arm ball, Gul has taken care of the middle overs by darting the ball into the pitch and getting it to skid off it.

On Friday, Gul bowled five balls to Andre Russell, with all five being dots. Beware of the Afghanistan mystery spinners, Vipers.

2025: West Indies continuing to spiral A YEAR that began with a dream win on a raging Multan turner against Pakistan quickly unravelled into a run of insipid results across a punishing new World Test Championship cycle.

Up against Australia (blanked 3-0 at home), India (2-0 away) and New Zealand (2-0 away), West Indies found themselves outmatched and outmuscled all through.

The retirement of modern T20 great Nicholas Pooran reopened the leadership void in the format in which West Indies are strongest, while Test captain Roston Chase, too, struggled to sustain the consistency that had made

him a credible candidate in the first place.

The women’s side endured heartbreak too. For the first time in 25 years, West Indies failed to qualify for the World Cup, edged out

by Bangladesh on net run rate by a margin of just 0.01.

A defeat to Scotland ultimately proved decisive.

HIGH POINT It came late in the year, against all odds in seaming Christchurch conditions, when Justin Greaves batted West Indies out of defeat with a monumental 202 not out off 388 balls.

An innings that began with his trademark flair transformed into a steely, self-denying knock, where he absorbed countless blows, faced more deliveries in one innings alone than he had in his Test career previously, and subdued his instincts with a resolve rarely seen in recent times.

Comeback man Kemar Roach made 58 not out - his highest first-class score - while facing 233 deliveries himself, to save a Test they seemed destined to lose.

LOW POINT There were several nadirs. Missing qual-

ification for the Women’s World Cup will continue to sting, but the 27 all out against Australia in Jamaica, narrowly falling short of New Zealand’s 70-year-old record of the lowest innings score ever, may have been the most damning.

It made Cricket West Indies convene former greats for a structural review. Even in West Indies’ preferred T20 format, a depleted side suffered a stunning 2-1 defeat to Nepal in the UAE, handing Nepal their first-ever series win over a Full Member. Rasheed, Matura recognised at Everest CC awards ceremony ...Mahabeer, Garbarran take Masters spoils EVEREST Cricket Club (ECC) recently held their awards ceremony to recognise outstanding individual performances among members in the calendar year 2025.

The gala event was held in the club’s renovated banquet hall where outstanding cricketers at the Second Division, First Division and Masters categories were honoured.

It was an evening of reflection and fun among members of the 112-year-old cricket club where Test opener, Tagenarine Chanderpaul copped the Batsman of the Year Award for amassing 142 runs in two innings while consistent left-arm orthodox spinner, Javed Rasheed grabbed 14 wickets in five matches to be adjudged Bowler of the Year in the First Division category.

In the Second Division category, teenage leg-spinning sensation, Nityanand Matura made a clean sweep grabbing Batsman of the Year and Bowler of the Year after scoring

139 runs and bagging 17 wickets from five matches.

In the Masters category, former West Indies under-19 player Hemraj Garbarran tallied 374 runs to cop the Batsman of the Year Award while former National Youth leggie, Lookeshwar Mahabeer picked up 28 wickets to be named Bowler of the Year for the third consecutive year.

Also in the Masters category, Vishan Lall (87 not out) and Shazam Ramjohn (87) were recognised for scoring the Highest Individual Score while leg-spinner, Surujdeo Ramdeen captured the Best Individual Bowling Figures, 5/23 which turned out to be the lone five-wicket haul in the Masters category in 2025.

Additionally, the club also presented Special Awards to Chanderpaul, Matthew Nandu, Richie Looknauth, Matura and Antonell Atwell.

Chanderpaul was recognised for his recall to the West Indies Test side while Matthew Nandu was singled out for leading Demerara to a successful title defence in the Senior Men’s Inter-County Super50 championship and for being named captain of the Guyana Harpy Eagles in the Regional Super50 tournament.

Consistent off-break bowler, Richie Looknauth was rewarded for making his FirstClass debut for the Guyana Harpy Eagles and Mathura was honoured for making the National under-19 side in 2025.

Antonell Atwell was one of four Everest Masters that were in the West Indies Over-40s team in the recent over-40s Cricket World Cup in Pakistan. The all-rounder was named the Most Valuable Player in that tournament and was specially acknowledged by his teammates as well.

Masters, Rajesh Singh thanked the sponsors, spouses and players for their support to the club in 2025. Singh who is a former President of the club, urged all players to strive for continued fitness to continue to give dedicated service to their respective teams. On behalf of the club, Singh pledged more support for the First and Second Division sides from the level of management.

Former National Youth player, Javed Rasheed spoke on behalf of the First and Second Division sides and reflected on a year of ‘mixed fortunes where the club narrowly missed out on semifinal spots in multiple tournaments. Rasheed also expressed optimism for more matches to be played in the calendar year.

Among those present at the evening of fun were former West Indies openers Rajendra Chandrika and Ryan Ramdass who assisted with the presentation of prizes.
