THE 147th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the International Day of Non-Violence were both observed on Sunday by the Indian High Commission, with international and national leaders calling for an end to the violence being meted out to humanity.

Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, Venkatachalam Mahalingam, hosted the ceremony at the Promenade Garden in the presence of the Minister

of Business and Tourism, Dominic Gaskin; General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Clement Rohee; and prominent businessman Dr. Yesu Persaud, among other officials.

Addressing the gathering, Mahalingam said Sunday’s observances reaffirmed “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence”.

He added that, in his day, Gandhi followed and practised the principle of tolerance in order to avoid violence, even if he was provoked.

“Some may argue that Gandhiji’s ideal of non-violence is too idealistic to become practical. Certainly, it is not easy to follow the path of non-violence. However, the issue becomes clearer if one looks at the other option,” Commissioner Mahalingam said as he asked: “Has violence and use of weapons succeeded in bringing an end to the problems? Has bloodshed been a more effective way to resolve disputes? Has overexploitation of nature’s

bounty led to a better life?”

Turning his attention to the green agenda, the Indian High Commissioner said Mahatma Gandhi was one of the pioneers of the green movement.

“You know that Gandhi prophesied that an economy built on material consumption would cause a serious threat to the environment.

He viewed Man and nature as interwoven, and very prophetically foresaw and warned the world of the monstrous consequences of (the confluence of) so-called development and nature.”

As such, India on Sunday ratified the Paris Climate Change Agreement as a mark of respect for the Father of India – Mahatma Gandhi. In remembering the life of this great soul, Minister Gaskin said Mahatma Gandhi was a leader who was committed to non-violent resistance and civil disobedience in the struggle for India’s Independence.

Minister Gaskin said,

however, that mankind has failed to remove the option of violence as a tool to fixing problems. For this reason, he said, there is still the issue of violence in varying forms.

“Violence is very much alive and well in many of our societies. Whether it is domestic violence; ethnic violence; territorial violence; religious, criminal or sexual violence, it is happening all around us and all around the world,” he said, while noting that it is a global crisis that ought to be addressed.

In response to this growing concern, the Minister of Business and Tourism called for emulation of the great leader, who refused to see violence as an option or a component of his struggle.

“Fortunately, in this case the leg work has already been done, because, on June 15 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring this day, October 2, as International Day of Non-Violence.

Gandhi had the wisdom, the discipline, and the courage in the face of violence to reject it as a solution,” Minister Gaskin posited.

PPP General Secretary Rohee also called for all of humanity to reject violence as a solution.

COLONEL George Allan Lewis will today take command of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) after 35 years of distinguished military service and though he has acknowledged that the challenge will be great, the 55-year-old said he is ready to lead.

Lewis will assume leadership of the Force during a colourful military parade today at defence headquarters, Camp Ayanganna, an event billed also as the farewell parade for the man he will take over from,Brigadier Mark Phillips.

The Guyana Chronicle was told that Lewis will likely be promoted this morning before being sworn in by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President David Granger.

Asked for a comment on his elevation, Lewis would only say “I am ready

to lead.”

He promised that after assuming duties he will outline his broad vision for the military. President Granger recently told reporters when asked about the impending change of command in the GDF that there was a “succession plan” when Phillips demits office. “… the next senior officer is going to take his place,” he told the Guyana Chronicle.

The President made it clear that there will be a smooth transition and more details will become available in the next few weeks.

Allies: Trump a genius if he paid no taxes

WHITE House candidate Donald Trump’s allies have said he is a “genius” if a report is true that he paid no federal income taxes for 18 years.

The New York Times said it had received some of Trump’s 1995 tax documents revealing US$915M losses that allowed him to legally avoid paying taxes.

The real estate tycoon’s camp refused to confirm or deny the report, but said the filing was “illegally obtained”.

The campaign of his rival, Hillary Clinton, called it a “bombshell”.

But the Republican presidential nominee’s surrogates took to the airwaves on Sunday morning to defend him.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said the New York Times article was a “very good story” because it showcased the “genius” of Mr Trump.

Christie told Fox News

Sunday the report would only underline that Trump is best qualified to ease tax policy on working people.

Rudy Giuliani, a close adviser to Trump, also said the Republican nominee was an “absolute genius” if he avoided federal income taxes.

“A lot of the people that are poor take advantage of loopholes and pay no taxes,” the former New York mayor told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday.

“Those are loopholes also.”

Trump himself played down the report on Sunday.

“I know our complex tax laws better than anyone who has ever run for President and am the only one who can fix them. #failing@nytimes,” he tweeted.

During the first presidential debate last Monday, Clinton attacked Trump for not releasing his tax returns, as all previous White House candidates have done since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

The Clinton camp said Trump embodied the “rigged system” of an unfair US tax code.

Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said in a statement: “This bombshell report reveals the colossal nature of Donald Trump’s past business failures and just how long he may have avoided paying any federal income taxes whatsoever.”

Clinton has already disclosed nearly 40 years of federal income tax returns, while Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, has made publicly available 10 years of his tax returns.

At a Saturday night rally, Trump appeared to accuse Clinton of marital infidelity.

“Hillary Clinton’s only loyalty is to her financial contributors and to herself,” he told thousands gathered in Manheim, Pennsylvania.

“I don’t think she’s even loyal to Bill if you want to know the truth. Why should she be, right?”

Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin has debuted his impression of Trump on Saturday Night Live, parodying the candidate’s pronunciation of China, among other things.

Many of those opposed to the deal were angry that it would have spared the rebels time in prison when they were responsible for so many deaths and displacements.

The Government tried to offset these concerns throughout the referendum campaign by spending heavily on television adverts in addition to staging concerts and peace rallies throughout the country in a bid to get people out to vote.

Abandoned house an eyesore in Barima Avenue, Bel Air Park Dear Editor,

I WISH to express my concern about the neglect of desolate structures that plague what is supposed to be the Garden City.

A close relative of mine,who resides in Bel Air Park, Georgetown, once a respectable and upstanding community, has been made to endure the adverse effects of a desolate structure just behind

her house. This abandoned house is located at 140 Barima Avenue, Bel-Air Park.

Apart from the deplorable sight, the abandoned house for many years has provided a safe haven for vagrants, drug addicts, junkies and thieves. On numerous occasions neighbouring residents endured the horrors of burglary and the sight of unfamiliar faces scouting out their

properties while lurking in this abandoned structure.

Many reports were made to the Kitty police station, and the Georgetown City Council. Neighbouring residents are fatigued and utterly disgusted at what seems to be total disregard for their safety, as well as for the image of their closely knit community. This unexpected reaction caused me to start thinking and dreaming, to the extent that I was inspired to document my dreams and vision for the future of our youths. I know that all Guyanese must have similar dreams. The rough drawing of a medical, cultural and sports complex to be powered by solar energy and financed with foreign aid, at the site of the former public hospital on Charles Place, New Amsterdam, between Main Street and Strand, outlines my proposal.

The importance of this proposal which in-

cludes Health and Wellness, Self Defense and Fitness, Sports and Culture, Education and Learning, Boardrooms and Administrative areas, a Reception Hall, a Hall of Fame, an Indoor Cricket Practice Facility, Child Care facility and playing area, Volleyball, Basketball, Lawn Tennis and Badminton courts, cannot be over-emphasised. This is an investment that must be made. My most fervent hope is that one day soon Kadeem, Judason, Ruel and so many more of our youths will be able to once more proclaim in joy and unison, “Ahh yes!”

The Auditor General’s A Golden Jubilee presentation Report Dear Editor,

LAST week Auditor General Mr. Deodat Sharma presented the 2015 Audit Report to Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Barton Scotland. While this report will come in for greater scrutiny by the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee and Members of Parliament when Parliament re-convenes, there are aspects that have been made known in it that can get the conversation going on management of the State’s coffers.

For years citizens have expressed concerns and alarm as to the manner in which the Consolidated Fund has been managed. Abuses continued to be met with strong rejection and calls for government to restore integrity to the process. One of the reasons the forensic audits was supported is the desire to know where patterns of abuse are taking place and putting mechanisms in place to halt it, including proceeding with legal action against violators.

Citizens were also mindful that even though the People’s Progressive Party/Civic administrations would deservedly take credit for timely submission of audit reports- i.e. by the 30th September of which 2016 marks seven consecutive years of compliance- the management of the Fund left much to be desired during their stewardship. The questionable nature of such management has contributed to this country being ranked the most corrupt English-speaking Caribbean country by Transparency International (TI).

To the A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) administration’s credit, there have been some noted efforts to improve management of the Fund, and such should continue until full compliance is achieved in every sector of government.

Improvement in accountability and transparency has been seen for instance with the appointment of the Bid Protest Committee. This is a legal requirement under the Public Procurement Act (2003) which previous administrations had ignored.

The 2015 Report for the greater part of the year (May to December) will reflect on the APNU+AFC stewardship. While it is fair to say the moment the APNU+AFC assumed office it ought to take responsibility for the stewardship of the country, time needed to get acquainted with the system needs to be factored in. Interest will also be shown as to what efforts were

In doing an analysis of the report, where it may be necessary to strengthen the laws to make deterrence meaningful and acquired the required personnel, the government must not flinch.

not be implemented it can lead to the impression that government is comfortable with the abuse of the Fund.

This, the APNU+AFC administration must be mindful of.

Audits are not only to satisfy the requirements of the law, but are also done to help in management of the resources of the State. Every effort needs to be taken to ensure that these resources are accounted for. Conscious that Guyana continues to receive international donor funding to assist in building our administrative capacity, and investors, local and external, are likewise expected to behave consistent with international best practices; the country needs not lapse behind in taking its rightful place.

In the past when TI and other institutions of such ilk pronounced on the state of governance in Guyana, the administration of the day responded either through denial or derision. In this new dispensation, governance must be approached in the manner that international institutions will see efforts on our part to adhere to laws and international best practices. If we strive hard enough and stay the course, Guyana can succeed.

Kwakwani, Ituni roads in deplorable state

Dear Editor,

I WANT to highlight a long and probably the most historical issue to date, that has plagued the people of kwakwani, Ituni and Linden for many years now.

The people who travel the Linden to Kwakwani road have had to deal with its dreadful and disgusting state that words will never describe how bad it has become. It is about time our regional officials look into this matter, because it has been going on for too long. It has gotten so bad that one thinks of it as a cancer that’s at stage 3 and soon we will reach stage 4. The question is how long more can we who travel these roads have to endure its decaying nature?

There are so many potholes and craters filled deep with water that soon we may need a ferry to cross. This problem is so cancerous that it has even spread to the community of Kwakwani. The roads there too are a mess. The people, especially those that travel everyday, desperately need a better road. Could someone look into this matter urgently?

your destiny and therefore our resolutions and goals should include at this time, the intention to contribute in whatever way we can to the shaping of a great future for our country. The lives of all those people in humanity who achieved remarkable successes was done simply by being committed to their goals.

Among millions of examples, we see a powerful example in the life of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.S), whose endless efforts and perseverance with the help of Allah, brought guidance to humanity at large.

Through wisdom, hard work, commitment, perseverance, and God’s will, we can achieve anything which we set out to achieve. But you cannot be better today if you did not set out to become better yesterday and took the necessary action for that betterment. Today, our country is plagued with the concern of every citizen of the high level of corruption, whether evident or perceived. The onus is on those in leadership positions to create policies that will

eradicate those thoughts of every level-minded citizen of this country, that corruption pervades this society at unacceptable levels. It may not be possible to eradicate corruption totally from our society, but it is how the leadership handles any corruption when exposed.

Everyone in a leadership position, small or big, must lend a voice against corruption, violence and other forms of evil, which controls are within us.

Remember the process of setting goals and resolutions requires that you actually take time to analyse where you stand and chart out what you want to become. Similarly, this is a strong message for all of us, especially our politicians of this country.

More often, we are held back because of procrastination and habits that are difficult to change. Let us start the change today – both in our personal self and in our country. Let us embark on a personal transformation that can help make us, our families, our community, our country and the world around us even stronger.

Let us start the change today – take the time to know ourselves better – identify our weaknesses and commit to eliminate them. Assess our strengths and use them for meaningful pursuits.

Make our relationship with our Creator even stronger.

Andy Ville residents want water, electricity before Christmas RESIDENTS of Andy Ville on the Wismar shore of Linden are of the opinion that only President David Granger can bring an end to their plight of living without water and electricity.

The residents believe that they have exhausted all possible options at the level of the Regional Community Development Council and the Regional Democratic Council and are pleading with the President to put things in place to bring electricity to their community for the Christmas season.

It has been 20 years since the first resident resided in the community and for many others, it has been a decade since they have been requesting these two necessities. To date, there are about 125 households and about 300 houselots in the area; and though the community has not yet been regularised, the residents claim they have been trying to do so for many years.

TIRED The residents who consist of mostly single mothers expressed frustration of having to regularly fetch water from a nearby creek which is also

“If you don’t have money to purchase water from the canter which provides water for $3000, then you have to go down [to] the creek if the rain does not fall and going down the creek is a far way from up the hill here and it not like a normal road that you wouldn’t feel anything and the coming up is even harder,” Sampson lamented.

Of the 125 households, about 15 of these are equipped with generators, while the others have to depend on other means such as candles and lamps. The unavailability of light in the community has resulted in an upsurge in burglaries and robberies, the latest being a few days ago.

to study; they are damaging their eyes; this is a hiding spot for the thieves,” another resident Colleen Calix said.

Chairman of the Community Development Council, Michael Greene, told this publication on Thursday that residents spent about $330, 000 at $10, 000 per houselot to pay a surveyor to have the community surveyed after they were told by the Linden Utility Services Cooperative Society Limited (LUSCSL) that the area needs to be surveyed before they receive electricity. Residents also pooled their money to pur-

chase materials needed for the process, but Greene claims that they were instructed by the Regional CDC office to discontinue the surveying process and they would provide a recommended surveyor.

“That was since 2015 and up to now no surveyor ain’t come, we desperately want light so we try we best to see what we can do, but they get we stall up and them ain’t doing nothing,” Greene said.

He said Regional Chairman Rennis Morian wrote several letters on behalf of the community to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and other entities and the situation has not changed.

“All ya hearing is that we gon get back to you we will get back to you and nothing else,” the residents told the Guyana Chronicle.

FORCED TO SQUAT The residents claim that with the unavailability of houselots, they were forced to squat on the lands, but are willing to cooperate with the Ministry of Communities to have the area regularised to benefit from the basic services. They are

of the opinion that the area should be regularised as it has been in existence for over a decade.

Minister Valarie Patterson in February at a public consultation in Linden told residents that the ministry will be putting systems in place to regularise squatting lands, but will not be regularising squatting lands on Government reserves and will not be encouraging any further squatting.

Community advocate Denton Osborne told this publication that the residents are now calling on the President to remedy this situation.

“The residents are now trying to jump all of the heads of the local officials and go directly to the President, so that he can pick up the phone and let the folks start moving,” he said. The CDC representatives are also frustrated as the residents are blaming them for not being efficient enough, but they have exhausted all options. The residents said that if they are not granted light and water by December, they will have no other option but to take to the streets.

Bartica sticking to ‘green’ promises

BARTICA is making steady progress in its quest to become the country’s first green town in keeping with President David Granger’s vision of a green economy.

The Bartica Mayor and Town Council said since its installation following the Local Government Elections in March, it has committed to the five stages of the “Green Economy” outlined by the President on the first “Tree Planting Day” ceremony held in the town last October.

Sustainable exploita-

tion of the country’s natural resources, environmental protection, promoting sustainable energy, promotion of sound ecological services and green technology were the stages highlighted by the President.

“The establishment of a municipal solid waste department and the continued transformation of the Byderabo Dump Site is testimony of our commitment of a cleaner, greener Bartica,” the Council said in a release.

Last October, President Granger, in his address to the people of Bartica, expressed the hope of having

trees line the avenues, in addition to the establishment of parks, gardens and even a zoo.

“Today, one year later, Bartica will soon commission a park featuring a three-tier fountain, a beautiful garden, kissing bridges, benabs and most importantly, it will be a park powered by solar energy,” the Council stated.

Under the leadership of Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan, the municipality said Bartica now has a Local Economic Development Strategic Plan for the next 3-5 years.

“This short-to-medium-

term LED Strategic Plan is fully integrated with Bartica’s green township plan, which carries a 15-20 year implementation period, and is led by the Ministry of the Presidency under Rear Admiral Gary Best,” the Mayor and Town Council explained.

The plans when implemented will transition Bartica into using fully renewable energy, sustainable organic agriculture development and establish Bartica as an information and communications technology centre of excellence, among other revolutionary changes.

“While these large-scale changes are taking place at the community level, there are still important steps that can be taken at the individual and organisational levels towards accomplishing these overall goals. It is in this context that the seemingly simple exercise of planting individual trees can take on such a profound meaning because as we all do these simple, individual acts, the cumulative effects of these will impact the aesthetics, appearance, and attractiveness of our community,” the Council said.

Deplorable Kwakwani Road under repair

THE long-awaited repairs to the Linden to Kwakwani Road have commenced.

The repairs to the road were delayed as a result of the inclement weather, but the stretch from Ituni to Kwakwani has started with the contract being awarded to contractor Joseph (only name given).

Repairs to the stretch from Linden to Ituni will commence shortly, Regional Vice- Chairman Elroy Adolph said.

Some $50M was allotted for the road to be repaired, making it into an all-weather road, but Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson in February during a public meeting in Kwakwani told residents that his Ministry will be securing a loan from

a foreign entity to transform the all-weather road into a bituminous one.

The road has been in a deplorable state for the past seven years and part of the blame was placed at the feet of the former contractor for producing substandard work, in addition to the mediocre aggregates that were previously used to repair the road.

Vice-Chairman Adolph said he is pleased with the standard of work being carried out by the new contractor and the materials being used; “Yes, I am pleased with the work being done and the contractor thus far, things can finally look up now,” Adolph said.

Young Bill Rogers releases 3 new hits

ROGER Hinds (Jnr), also called ‘Young Bill Rogers’ and son of the legendary 20th century Calypso Monarch, Bill Rogers (Snr) is poised to make a big hit on the local music industry once more, with three recently released songs: ‘Chutney Music Nice’, ‘Suicide is not the Answer’ and a hot, hot Soca, ‘Jiggling Bumper’.

And there’s a fourth, soon to be released – ‘We want Peace’. Excited about the prospects for an imminent breakthrough, Rogers credits the recordings to reigning Chutney King, Bunty Singh’s Recording Studios – BKVJ at Rosignol, Berbice.

“The work was well recorded, well received and I am satisfied so far with what he has done,” Rogers said.

An innovative producer, with a knack for ‘thinking outside the box’, Rogers has been able to artfully and delectably combine Chutney Music with Bollywood songs, thereby emerging the first to come up with a new and interesting genre which can literally be sold as ‘Bolly-Chut. He recalls that as he was composing his song ‘Chutney Music Nice,’ he got this idea of teaming up with Bunty Singh in a manner as would highlight the unity between Indo and Afro-Guyanese.

“It also showed my versatility in terms of showcasing myself, doing about three Bollywood songs in medley,” Rogers says.

And so, presenting his song ‘Chutney Music Nice’ he asserts: “This, I hope, will give my music a plus, thereby capturing the hearts of Indo-Caribbean music lovers.”

Rogers recalls his inspiration came from an Indian wedding he attended, and as he sat listening to the various types of music, he got a premonition to come up with this combination.

Since releasing his songs, he says he has been interviewed live on ‘Guyana Tunes’, a radio station in New York; Pujah Ram and Vee Jay also from Guyana Tunes in New York; Allan Gopie, a DJ at ‘We Thing Radio’ also in New York and D J Bevaughn at Caribbean Jam Radio. He has also shared his songs with NCN 94.1; 93.1 and 89.5 in Guyana.

Chutney Music Nice’ and ‘Jiggling Bumper’ are of upbeat tempo, a demonstration of classic verve on the part of the singer, and certainly put listeners in a partying mood.

However, ‘We want Peace’ and ‘Suicide is not the Answer’ are basically Edutainment pieces and bear strong messages of exhortation.

Edutainment is entertainment designed to teach something or get a particular educational message across to listeners. The content is designed to educate and at the same time, entertain.

‘WE WANT PEACE’ The song: “We want peace” bears a message of peaceful co-existence, appealing to persons around the world to live

problems…. There are many ways to solve them,” he admonished.

He said that Calypso or Chutney or Soca are songs that people can relate to and have respect for Guyanese, and moreso, respect for property rights.

“It is disconcerting to know that artistes have to invest so much in getting their music put together and recorded, only to see it within the first few days, being carbon copied and sold out in the streets at rock-bottom rates and the singer gets nothing,” he said.

He bemoaned the fact that when they sing and record a song, invariably they do not only make back the money invested.

“As I said, the corporate laws need to be enforced. Those people out there who are pirating the music need to pay up their dues. Also our radio and TV stations need to play more Guyanese music,” he said.

And to the singers out there, he is urging them to register and copyright their work.

“Every day we hear about so many wars going on around the world – whether it is tribal war, political war, whether its people fighting for land or over ethnicity -- one thing is sure – it results in destruction to the human race,” he said.

Rogers said using the medium of television messages, while they are all good and effective, also cost a lot of money.

But in using song, the CD/DVD only has to be paid for once, and can be used continuously, each time getting the message across. For example, it presents impacting messages educating persons on the benefits of living in peace as opposed to racial disunity.

“Whatever I do, my aim is to address social issues and send out positive messages,” Rogers said. He bemoaned the fact that a lot of songs today do not have any positive message.

‘SUICIDE IS NOT THE ANSWER’ ‘Suicide is not the Answer’ carries a strong message, urging persons not to commit suicide or even to have suicide ideation.

This song, a Suicide Awareness message, even though catchy, leaves powerful subliminal messages in one’s psyche which are the constant reminders why not to commit or attempt suicide and the dangers and other implications of doing so, Rogers said.

He considers it a shame that Guyana should be rated amongst countries with the highest incidence of suicide around the world and is appealing to persons with suicide ideation to be strong and resist the temptation to commit suicide.

“The more it is played, the more likely it is that the message will stick with you: ‘Suicide is not the answer for domestic

He recalled as a teenager he would enlist for the Guyana Broadcasting Studios’ “On Show Young Guyana’ and it was then that he developed that confidence to come out on stage and do his thing. By age 20, he recalls, he knew that there would be a career in singing for him. His father died in 1983.

34 women now budding business gurus

THIRTY-FOUR women representing 34 villages along the Essequibo Coast can now consider themselves budding business gurus, after having successfully completed the seventh training session of the Self-Reliance and Success in Business workshop.

The training was done in the Region Two Boardroom at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast.

First Lady Sandra Granger, speaking at the graduation ceremony, told the women, “I Hope you have benefited from [the workshop]… and I hope

Yohann Sanjay Pooran, facilitator of Interweave Solutions Incorporated, the facilitating agency, advised the women that, with a strong business plan and having a clear outline of their business, they can be successful business owners and help

with development in their communities.

“Her [Mrs. Granger’s] vision is our vision as we move forward with the implementation of the six Ps [Planning, Paperwork, Products, Promotion, Price and Process] of business, our community-oriented approach to action, and our emphasis on creating a good quality of life in your homes. And I believe we’re contributing to the exercise of establishing a sound and solid village economy, which helps everyone,” he said.

Pooran recalled that at several workshops conducted throughout the regions of Guyana, Mrs. Granger spoke extensively on women’s empowerment

and how an economy can move forward.

“We have trained over 200 women…. Think about the impact of those if they go on to create successful businesses under the Guyanese economy.

That is 200-plus people in the workforce employing additional people, who are paying taxes, making a strong contribution to their communities,” he explained.

Another accident at Cemetery Road

THE Cemetery Road and Norton Street junction, Georgetown, was the scene of yet another accident Sunday afternoon.

Two persons suffered minor injuries in the collision.

The driver of motorcar PSS 5234 said he was travelling east on Norton Street when motorcar PJJ5434 jumped the intersection resulting in the collision.

The driver in the other vehicle was in a state of shock and could not give a comment.

Residents in the area were not surprised at the accident as they related that the junction has been the site of hundreds of accidents in the area.

“The police need to place speed humps on the Cemetery Road junction to ensure people know they have to slow down; in fact, they should put those at all junctions which don’t have the right of way,” one resident said.

One beneficiary of the training session, Vaniessa Granville, said the training done by Mrs. Granger and Interweave Solutions Incorporated has provided a great depth of knowledge for the women.

“My charge to us is to look for the good in each other; put aside our differences; face the challenges together, and let’s move forward together and let progress continue,” she said.

Councillors trained to tackle issues affecting young people SOME 75 councillors from various community development councils (CDCs) have completed a one-month workshop geared at identifying problems affecting adolescents and youths and designing programmes to address adolescents and youths in their communities.

Facilitated by the National Community Development Councils (NCDC) in collaboration with the United Nations through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the workshop saw participation from Regions Three, Four, Five and 10.

The participants were able to increase their knowledge and skills in the areas of identification of social problems of adolescents and youth; causal factors, adolescent growth and development, adolescent needs and the challenges they encounter in their lives; adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and links to gender equality and gender-based violence.

During brief remarks at

the closing ceremony held at the Pegasus Hotel, Minister within the Ministry of Communities, Valerie Adams-Patterson, urged the participants to focus on implementing change and getting results, since they are now empowered with the necessary skills and are familiar with the issues affecting their respective communities.

“Many times we come up with workshops and people come up with plans; when you get back to your communities, (they are) put on the shelves. I trust that this will not happen, because the organisers of this workshop expect that with knowledge acquired there will be change of behaviour, attitude, and change in all its forms,” Minister Adams-Patterson said.

She noted that there should be more interaction among the people of a community, since the people would be able to provide significant insights into the strengths and weaknesses of their community.

According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), she also encouraged the councillors to listen to the residents, as it would help them to identify areas which seem to be of common interest towards making change and developing one shared vision.

The UNFPA Regional Representative Patrice La Fleur spoke of the importance of youth development, noting that young people can play a major role in launching an economic, social and cultural transformation once they are healthy, educated, and are provided with viable options in life.

Youths remain at the centre of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in terms of prevalence of the infection, vulnerability, impact and potential for change, even though the world had agreed that young people have the human right to the information and means to protect themselves, La Fleur explained.

FPA is also concerned about adolescent pregnancy, which robs girls of their childhood and often prevents them from completing their education. In fact, in Guyana, 2013 statistics reveal that the adolescent pregnancy percentage has been fluctuating from 20 to 22 per cent for persons below the age of 19 years, and has remained constant at one per cent for persons under 15 years. There is, however, a reported increase in adolescent pregnancies in the hinterland regions.

It is in this context, La Fleur said, that the UNFPA collaborated with CARICOM to develop an integrated strategic framework for the reduction of teenage pregnancy in the Caribbean.

In Guyana, the Ministry of Public Health, in collaboration with UNICEF, UNFPA and PAHO, will soon launch a situation analysis of all 10 regions to ascertain the factors which contribute to girls becoming pregnant as early as 10 years of age.

Graceful Hampton Court HAMPTON Court is one of the well-known villages on the Essequibo Coast, and its residents -- many of whom are middle class citizens -- largely depend on rice farming for their livelihood.

The village was once the premier sugar estate on the Essequibo Coast, and in its heyday boasted a hospital, a weekly market, and one

of the largest distilleries in Essequibo.

The Dutch, who came around 1620, were the first colonisers to settle on the Essequibo Coast; and on their new homeland, they established cotton and sugar plantations.

At one time the Essequibo Coast had 55 sugar estates, 34 sugar mills, and the largest estate complex was

housed at Hampton Court.

By 1804, the British had taken over from the Dutch and had renamed most of the estates, but some Dutch names, such as La Belle Alliance, Reliance, Hoffvon-oric, Aurora and Perth, remained.

At about 1860, estates on the coast began to close due to economic reasons, and greater attention was placed on the estates in Demerara and Berbice.

The last remaining estates to be closed were the Golden Fleece, Affiance and Hampton Court estates. In 1934, Hampton Court was the last estate to close, and it effectively brought an end to sugar cultivation on the Essequibo Coast.

There is an interesting but troubling story on the closure of that estate.

At the time, the owners of the last three estates were John Doors, Seymour of the Golden Fleece Estate, and HP Brasington who held ownership over Hampton Court. All three men were contesting the election to become leader of the region.

In the early 1960s, Kayman Sankar came on the scene with establishment of the Tapacuma Lake Project. He purchased the Hampton Court estate and breathed new life into it. He introduced new technology in rice farming, improved drainage and irrigation, and agricultural production soared. Sankar also sublet 10-acre plots to farmers, improved his rice milling capacity, set up a community ground, and later sold several lots for housing.

In addition, he held field demonstrations and trained farmers’ children to operate modern equipment; and on the basis of service, many employees were sent on vacation to Canada and islands in the Caribbean. Some of them never returned to Guyana.

Sankar was more than a farmer; he was also a philanthropist and benefactor. He stood as guarantor for many

A rice field in Hampton Court In those days, only persons with property were eligible to vote in an election, and when the ballots were counted, Seymour emerged the victor. The results, according to reports, greatly annoyed Brasington, who overnight ordered the closure of the Hampton Court estate.

The decision, while probably made in the best interest of the disgruntled Brasington, was devastating to the some 400 Indian indentured servants who occupied the 20 logies on the estate. Their homes were destroyed, they were forced out of the estate’s compound, and were reportedly told by Brasington to “eat mud” and “sleep in bags”. Some, out of frustration, committed suicide. While a few were rescued by the black villagers at Dartmouth, others moved to the Pomeroon and other areas on the Essequibo Coast.

By 1945, the estate went into receivership, and was soon after purchased by McDoom, who rented lands to the East Indian farmers to plant rice. It was the beginning of rice cultivation on

farmers, allowing them to purchase heavy-duty machinery through bank loans.

Sankar, an icon and industry captain purchased the Hampton Court estate through a loan from the Guyana Credit Cooperative.

He set the pace for the introduction of new technology into the rice industry, and was also a great community leader.

With his business going great guns, he built at Hampton Court an airstrip which still exists and is in use today. His aircraft was initially used for shying and spraying paddy and for tourism tours. It is often used

by Government officials on visits to the region.

In recent times, Hampton Court has been affected by poor drainage, and the ground, which once hosted a test match and was a regular first class venue, is now a shadow of what it was in its glory days. Its restoration would require a significant investment, probably from Government, as the Sankar family no longer enjoys the financial status it once had.

THE heavy dependence on rice has left farmers on the Essequibo Coast and other parts of Guyana reeling after the lucrative Venezuelan rice deal fell through last year.

Baksh, who has been in business for the past 43 years, told the Guyana Chronicle that farmers do not have to abandon rice, but look at other areas to supplement their incomes earned from rice cultivation.

Rice farmers on the Essequibo Coast have, in the past year, significantly scaled down rice cultivation, and some -- especially small farmers -- have become taxi drivers to help support their families.

Baksh says there is no need for despair, since farmers have lands; however, they need to put it into good use. And an area they can venture into, he said, is the dairy The supermarket owned by Baksh at Affiance, Essequibo Coast industry, whose potential has never really been exploited.

According to him, on the Essequibo Coast alone, there is an industry worth $18B annually that is waiting to be tapped.

“The consumption of local milk is very small.

On the Essequibo Coast, it is probably less than five per cent. There are about 50,000 people on the Essequibo Coast, and let us say on average they would need at least a pint of milk per day, which can be sold at $100 per pint, that’s $18B a year.

At present, the Essequibo Coast does not have the capacity to serve that volume of milk, but it has land and the ability to develop capacity,” said Baksh, who operates a supermarket, a rice mill, a poultry farm, and a chowmein factory; and with a staff of 250, is among the largest employers on the Essequibo Coast.

It is estimated that approximately 98 per cent of the milk consumed locally is imported. These products are readily available in

shops and supermarkets throughout Guyana.

PASTEURISATION PLANT To get things going, Baksh said, the region would need a significant capital investment. And on that note, he said it will need a pasteurisation plant similar to the one Government said it would build in Region Four.

Transporting milk all the way to Region Four, Baksh said, would be too costly for farmers on the Essequibo Coast.

And apart from pro-

ducing milk, he said, farmers can look at value-added.

Already, a group of 10 women on the Essequibo Coast who have seen the potential of milk have started a small operation, which has been growing from strength to strength.

Every week, the women’s group called WDs Dairies purchases 10 gallons of milk, which they use to produce milk shakes. The shakes come in four flavours: Strawberry, Peanut Punch, Whole Milk and See page 18

IT IS no easy going being confined to a wheelchair; but even in their discomfort, Mohamed Khan and Uttamkumar Isurdeen are upbeat in spirit as they search for ways in which they can live life comfortably.

Khan, a former Deputy Mayor of Anna Regina and extension officer at the Rice Producers Association (PRA) and the Guy-

Mohamed Khan ana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), was an able administrator and community leader until tragedy struck him on that fateful day of July 20, 2004.

He was riding home after meeting with some farmers at Devonshire Castle, Essequibo Coast, when he tried to swerve from a dog which ran in his path and fell violently on his back on the public road. At the instance of the fall Khan felt no pain, but it came soon after, and was so intense that it made movement very difficult for him. Public-spirited residents who saw what happened rushed him to the Suddie Hospital, and after an X-ray, his worst fears were confirmed: his spine had been fractured.

This was the beginning of a series of miseries that followed. On the night he was admitted to hospital, Khan told the Guyana Chronicle, he fell off his bed and further aggravated his situation. And it was only after a relative who works at the hospital intervened that efforts were made to transfer him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Khan related that, at the Georgetown Public Hospital, he was examined by a doctor and was advised that the institution was not equipped to carry out the corrective surgery he needed to return to some state of normalcy.

“I was told that the surgery to fix my condition (would) have to be done at the Mount Hope Hospital in Trinidad and Tobago, and the cost to carry it out was Gy$2M. I helped to raise the money by selling out a 10-acre rice cultivation I had.

I got support from family members and the Government, and all was set for the surgery; but on the day I was supposed to fly out of Guyana, I got a strange message,” he said.

CHANGE OF PLAN Khan, who was at the time in severe pain and unable to sit up or do anything for himself, said he received a message from the management of the country’s main hospital, informing him that the surgery would no longer be carried out in Trinidad and would be done at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Faced with a situation of dying without making any attempt to live, a deeply-angered Khan consented to do the surgery at the City public hospital; and according to him, it made his situation worse than when he was admitted. Notwithstanding this, he was discharged, but he never lost hope of getting better.

At home, he was advised by doctors that his condition could improve with surgery in India, but it would cost some $5M. With his savings significantly depleted, Khan sold a house lot and the RPA, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG), the Government, and several generous individuals stepped forward to make the surgery possible.

And eventually he was able to go to India, and after a successful surgery and a month of therapy, he began to feel much better, but his money dried up and he was forced to return to Guyana. In Guyana, he paid a professional to continue the therapy, as the service at the time was not available at any of the hospitals on the Essequibo Coast.

After a while he had no money, and he turned to prayers as a form of healing.

Today, Khan can eat, bathe and move around by himself; and is a correspondent for this newspaper.

CHALLENGES But he noted that battling disability is just one of the challenges disabled persons face.

“I have seen disabled persons (stand) on the road for hours; minibuses seldom stop to pick them up. Most Government buildings on the Essequibo Coast do not have ramps, and as such, disabled persons cannot visit them for services. And worse yet, at the Suddie Hospital, disabled persons sit for a long time to await treatment. These persons should be given priority attention,” a passionate Khan said.

The Persons with Disability Act of 2010 provides for the protection of the basic rights of the some 50,000 disabled persons in Guyana.

Isurdeen, also from the Essequibo Coast, agreed with Khan and said the Government should look at making jobs, such as entering data, record management and book-keeping, open to wheelchair users.

Isurdeen, a former teacher, rice mill supervisor and construction worker, is married and has fathered a child with his wife. That child is a teacher currently pursuing studies at the University of Guyana (UG).

Isurdeen has been confined to a wheelchair for the past six years, after a minibus in which he was travelling got involved in an accident on the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara. Isurdeen told the Guyana Chronicle that he suffered spinal

Uttamkumar Isurdeen injuries in that accident, and doctors at a private hospital had recommended that he seek at an overseas hospital treatment which would enable him to walk again.

But doctors at a public hospital advised him that such treatment would be a waste of time and money. Isurdeen has done therapy and is able to move about by himself.

WANT A NORMAL LIFE “I want to live a normal life. I want to work and earn an income to support my family. I want to go to the barber shop and

cut my hair, and to play Lotto. I just want to keep active,” the young man, who participated in the Independence marathon for the disabled a few months ago, said.

He also wants to get into contact with the National Commission on Disability, to find out about the services he can access and how he can participate in that agency’s programmes. The Commission, since coming into being, has been working tirelessly to improve the lives of the country’s disabled.

Isurdeen, 31, is full of hope, and was high in praise of his wife Kumawattie Ramkoomar, who has stuck by his side.

From the 10 gallons of milk, the women produce 150 bottles of shakes utilising homemade techniques to pasteurise the milk, aided by a quality control officer. The whole process -- from pasteurisation of the milk to bottling and labelling -- takes about two hours.

“Already, we have a ready market. The milk is sold in the WDs Mall and (in) shops at Charity, and the response from consumers has been excellent. We will soon target the schools on the Essequibo Coast; but, right now, there is a great demand to produce more,” said Mignon Alphonso, one of the members of the group.

VALUE ADDED Aside from the milk shakes, the group is looking to produce yogurt, cheese, ice-cream and other milk products, as there is a market for these products at Charity and on the Essequibo Coast.

Another prominent Essequibo Coast businessman, Roopan Ramotar, had told the Guyana Chronicle that rice farmers would continue to feel the squeeze if they do not diversify their business.

Ramotar is also into cattle rearing, plantain farming, fish cultivation and coconut cultivation.

He recently constructed a modern coconut processing factory at Land of Plenty on the Essequibo Coast, and is exporting coconut water to a buyer in the sister Caricom nation of Trinidad and Tobago.

Ramotar, who has not given up cultivating rice, has said the road to survival for rice requires a four-step approach: (1) cutting production cost (2) upping yield (3) producing quality paddy, and (4) creating a demand for rice.

“Planting less and producing high quality paddy will improve demand; and with this happening, the price for rice will go up and farmers will get more money.

And this will be supplemented by the income they earn from their cattle, sheep, or fish farm,” he has said.

Beer at coconut festival –– committee members upset, say approval of sale wholly inappropriate

SOME members of the Coconut Festival and Boat Parade Committee are up in arms after they were outvoted in their bid to make the grand October 16 event alcohol-free.

The festival, which Agriculture Minister Noel Holder is expected to address, will feature an exhibition on the benefits and products of coconut;

and, on the same day, a boat parade will be held in the Pomeroon River.

But with some two weeks to go before the festival, some members are dissatisfied that various brands of beer will be sold at the educational and informational event.

Committee member and Charity businessman, Nateram Ramnanan, better known as ‘Juice Man’, told the Guyana Chronicle it is wholly inappropriate to be selling beer at an event that school children would be attending.

“The coconut festival should be all about coconut; and if they want a beverage, there will be plenty coconut water there,” he said.

According to Ramnanan, beer and rum stole the attention in the past, when approval was granted for their

sale at agricultural exhibitions on the Essequibo Coast.

“It happened at Essequibo Nite and more recently the Essequibo Night of Flavour. The Essequibo Night of Flavour was a failure. There was hardly any attention on the products made in Essequibo. The only product that received a whole lot of attention was rum and alcohol. What should have been an awareness event turned out to be a sporting event,” he said.

The businessman also pointed out that on Monday, market day at Charity, there have been numerous instances of drunken brawls both during and after market.

“Persons drink; some of them fight, some of them get so drunk that they get knocked out and sleep at the corner of the road. Others verbally abuse passersby. The persons who approved the sale of alcohol do not know what they are asking for,” an impassioned Ramnanan said.

The Guyana Chronicle was told that, at the last meeting of the committee, there was a disagreement on the sale of alcohol at the festival and

Apart from locals, the festival will feature exhibitors from Brazil, India and Costa Rica. It will showcase bottled coconut water and the process in bottling coconut water; foods made from coconut, such as sugar cake and cook up; products

The Pomeroon reportedly has the best coconuts in the world. In the Pomeroon alone, there are about 20,000 acres of land that can be cultivated with coconuts, producing an

estimated 140 million nuts per year; and at $50 per nut, it is a $7 billion enterprise waiting to be tapped. And this does not include the value-added industry of the coconut, which includes coconut oil, craft, and coconut water.

The worth of the value-added industry is estimated at about $7 billion, most of which can come from the sale of coconut water.

GROWING DEMAND It is estimated that the demand for coconut water grows at between 50 and 100 per cent annually. Globally, the coconut water industry is worth one billion US dollars, and the product is on its way to becoming the world’s most popular drink.

According to The WaterPage.Com, coconut water increases rehydration, boosts the immune system, decreases heat stroke, increases blood circulation in diabetics, and is important in anti-aging treatments.

Moreover, coconut water is a rich source of vitamins and minerals.

Locally, some 60,000 acres of land are under coconut cultivation; and in terms of its status as a priority agricultural crop, coconut ranks third in importance, behind rice and sugar.

About half of the coconuts produced locally are exported to The Dominican Republic, but these are mainly dried nuts.

In light of the threat of global warming, coconut stands out as a climate-resistant crop, and can be a more-than-useful product to brace farmers during hard times.

The organisers of the festival intend to make Pomeroon the coconut capital of Guyana, and coconut water the national drink.

––high speed Internet eases stress of students in gathering information for assignments WITH access to high speed Internet, secondary school students, especially those in the outlying regions of Guyana, are now breathing a sigh of relief.

About two weeks ago, the Charity Secondary School -which has a large number of students from the Pomeroon, a riverine community in Region Two -- was connected, opening up an endless possibility to learning.

Students there no longer have to use a paid Internet café to do research for assignments; and for teachers, the development has opened the door for virtual delivery of education.

These have been made possible through the Government’s Improving Digital Equity, Access and Learning (IDEAL) Programme, in which 100 schools and educational institutions were hooked up to high speed Internet at the beginning of this academic term.

Essequibians have for long been complaining of slow Internet, and for students who have to use the facility to do research, a great amount of patience was needed to calm their frustration.

Today they cannot be happier, especially those who would be sitting the May/June 2017 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

Stephon Abrams, a fifth form student and resident of the Pomeroon, has said that even though she has a laptop, she cannot use it to

do research on the Internet, because the signal is poor where she lives. She had to pay someone $100 per page to do the research for most of her assignments, which at times can be too much money, depending on the number of pages printed, and given her daily school expenses.

“It was costly at times, but I had to get the information to submit my assignment on time,” the soft spoken business student told the Guyana Chronicle.

Now she carries her laptop to school to do research, or use one of the systems in the school’s computer laboratory.

TORTUROUS EXERCISE Her classmate and colleague Rebekah Kumar was also elated at the Internet services at her disposal,

contending that research that requires the use of the Internet is no longer a torturous exercise.

“I have a $2800 Internet plan on my phone. On the phone, the Internet works reasonably well, but getting the information on the phone to paper was hard work. I had to read the information (and) summarise it, or copy it with a pen off the phone.

That takes much out of you, especially when you have several assignments,” Kumar told this publication.

Both of the girls will be sitting Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDPM) at the upcoming CSEC examinations, and they are hoping to do well in the subject. Their teacher, Dhirendra Deonarine, is See page 21

An ambitious young lady, Gonsalves joined the teaching profession seven years ago, and is today a trained English teacher at the Charity Secondary School.

A few years ago, after completing studies at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) Centre at Anna Regina in Region Two, Gonsalves enrolled at the University of Guyana and read for a Bachelor’s Degree in English. accomplishment and the urge to do more. She also related that she spends a significant amount of time counselling and motivating students to embrace an upbeat view of life, to walk the straight and narrow path, and to do well at their examinations.

For Gonsalves, teaching is more that delivery of academic knowledge. She said a teacher

has to be a mentor, a custodian, a social worker, and a role model.

When this young lady is not busy teaching, she enjoys reading, writing poetry, and playing indoor and outdoor games.

She is advising young people to take their education seriously, listen to their parents, stay focused, and set goals and work to achieve them.

Bush Lot settlement

BUSH Lot, on the Essequibo Coast, is an Indian immigration time-expired settlement. Indentured immigrants working on the colonial sugar estates on Hamburg Island were relocated to Bush Lot after Hamburg Island was flooded out. This was to discourage the then heavy migration and repatriation claims which were being made by the Indian immigrants at the end of their 10-year contract.

Small quantities of land were granted to these ex-indentured immigrants for rice growing with the intention to secure their presence as estate labourers on a part-time ba-

sis. In 1880, colonial Governor Dr. Guishburg purchased Bush Lot, an abandoned sugar estate, and divided it into house lots and two acres of rice lands to each of the 286 immigrants and their families in exchange for their passages back to India.

However, all the persons granted land on the settlement did not take up residence there because they were working elsewhere.

Among this group of Indian indentured immigrants who moved to Bush Lot was Mc Doom Baksh, Imam Bacchus and his brothers Azeez, Koda and Razack.

Imam brought with him a pair of bulls from Hamburg and his sewing machine. He

was a tailor by profession in the colonial days, and he and his three brothers each occupied two acres of rice lands.

The indentured immigrants lived in huts situated on a long stretch of mud road measuring several miles and looking like a squatter’s settlements.

They were successful in cultivating a number of paddy fields. The Essequibo lakes (Tapacuma, Capoey and Mainstay) were a valuable resource of water for the purpose of irrigation in the cultivation of their paddy fields.

Bush Lot was, in 1876, amalgamated with Anna Regina, which did not remain for long under canes, becoming a grazing ground for the immi-

grants’ cattle. The great flood of 1890 worsened their plight, since their crops, particularly rice, suffered badly.

Imam Bacchus used his pair of bulls during the colonial days to plough his two acres of rice field, and would at times take on jobs to plough the other indentured immigrants’ fields to make extra money. At night he would use his machine to sew clothes for the other settlers’ families, getting an additional source of income. He and his brothers left Bush Lot settlement after they incurred heavy debts due to the floods.

They moved to Adventure, and later bought a rice mill at Middlesex, where they would buy the farmers’ produce and

There they established a big rice mill. The estate now houses several complexes, including the most modern supermarket on the Essequibo Coast.

By Neil Robinson LONDON, (Reuters)-Something was always likely to give when the Premier League’s two unbeaten sides met at White Hart Lane yesterday where Tottenham Hotspur swept Manchester City aside 2-0 to inflict Pep Guardiola’s first defeat as the visitors’ manager.

The victory switched the focus from City’s best opening to a top-flight campaign to what has become Spurs’ finest start to a season since 1961 when they won the league and FA Cup double.

No wonder Tottenham’s Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino described their performance as “nearly perfect”.

Spurs are now one point behind City, who have 18 from seven games, and one ahead of third-placed Arsenal, who lived up to their ‘lucky’ tag with a bizarre added-time winner from Laurent Koscielny’s deflection at unfortunate Burnley.

Elsewhere, there were draws for Stoke City at Manchester United (1-1) and Southampton at champions Leicester City (0-0).

Manchester City, who had not dropped a point in their first six games, went behind when Aleksandar Kolarov diverted a Danny Rose cross past his own keeper Claudio Bravo after nine minutes.

Dele Alli added a second after good work from Son Heung-min and, with City failing to cope with Spurs’ pressing and pace, the hosts also had an Erik Lamela penalty saved by Bravo.

No doubt regular taker Harry Kane would have done better from the spot, but in every other respect Spurs coped well without their injured England striker as South Korea’s Son produced another dazzling performance.

By contrast, City struggled without their own missing talisman, Belgium midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who had inspired their scintillating start to the season.

Guardiola was gracious in defeat, admitting Spurs had been the better side.

“They are sharper for the second ball, in England you have to control that. We had problems to control the game,” he said.

GUYANA’s national road race champion Geron Williams and fellow Guyanese Romello Crawford found themselves on the podium in the 2016 edition of the Tobago Cycling Classic which concluded on Saturday in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

According to reports, Williams, Guyana’s only professional cyclist, competing for Team Foundation of the United States,placed second overall after placing ninth in the first leg on Tuesday last, third in the third leg on Friday and third again in the final leg on Saturday.

Crawford on the other hand, representing Team PSL of Trinidad and Tobago,placed second overall in the Division Two category after placing second to Team Southclaine’s Jabari Whiteman of Trinidad in the 20-lap race on Saturday.

CRL’s Arno Van Der Zwet of the Netherlands won the Overall Division One title after riding consistently throughout the four-stage event and placing fourth in the final leg (60 laps) on Saturday. The final stage was contested around Market Square-Wilson Road.

Williams’ team Foundation teammate Norlandy Sanchez of the Dominican Republic edged him (Williams) to win the final leg, but Williams’ performance throughout the four-day event earned him the podium spot ahead of Sanchez in the overall standing.

Jamaican Marlo Rodman,who won the overall title last year and was tipped to make a repeat this year,was nowhere among the top four overall finishers.

He won the 60-lap criterium on Friday, finishing ahead of his PSL team-mate Nick Stopler of Netherlands and Williams (Guyana/Team Foundation).

Sharma, Saha set up massive lead of 339 for India

(REUTERS)- Sharma’s masterful 82 and a seventh-wicket stand of 103 runs with Wriddhiman Saha put India firmly in the driver’s seat against New Zealand in the second Test yesterday after the hosts’ second innings had got off to a wobbly start.

At stumps on the third day, Saha (39 not out) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (eight) were at the crease for the hosts, who lead the threematch series 1-0 and will reclaim top spot in the test rankings from Pakistan with a win at Eden Gardens.

India reached 227 for eight in their second innings for an overall lead of 339, a tall chase already for the touring side on a deteriorating pitch.

Matt Henry and Trent Boult had seemingly resurrected New Zealand’s hopes in the second session with some inspired fast bowling after India wrapped up the touring side’s first innings for 204 in the morning for a handy lead.

Henry, who picked up three wickets in India’s first innings, added another three to his tally, with Boult picking up two more as India were reduced to 106 for six.

India opener Murali Vijay (seven) fell to Henry in the first over after lunch, while the right-arm fast bowler re-

turned in his next to claim the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara (four), India’s top scorer in the first innings with 87.

Shikhar Dhawan (17), who survived a brutal opening spell before lunch from Boult when he was twice struck on his left hand, was out leg before to the leftarm paceman.

FIGHTBACK Ajinkya Rahane (one) did not last long either, reducing India to 43-4, and it was left to captain Virat Kohli (45) and Rohit to rescue India with a fifth-wicket stand of 48.

Kohli looked in good touch before he was out leg before to a Boult delivery that stayed low and went under his bat.

Du Plessis ton lifts South Africa to big win over Australia (REUTERS)-A century from stand-in skipper Faf du Plessis lifted South Africa to a huge 142-run win over Australia and a 2-0 lead in the five-match oneday international series at The Wanderers yesterday.

Du Plessis, who is leading

the side in this series in the absence of the injured AB de Villiers, plundered 111 from 93 balls as South African posted a commanding 361 for six in their 50 overs having been asked to bat by Australia.

The tourists lost regular wickets on a good batting track and were all out for 219 in the 38th over as the home side recorded their second biggest ODI win over Australia by runs, eclipsed only by a 196-run victory a decade ago in Cape Town.

Australia captain Steve Smith inserted South Africa in the belief that bowling conditions would be best in the morning but the home side made a fine start, racing to 70 in the 12th over before Quinton de Kock, who blasted 178 in the first game on Friday, mistimed his shot and was caught for 22.

Fellow opener Rilee Rossouw (75) and JP Duminy (82) made valuable contributions but the innings was steered by Du Plessis’s century as he struck 13 fours and manoeuvred the ball around with great skill.

Australia gave debuts to opening bowlers Chris Tremain and Joe Mennie but they found their introduction to international cricket an eye-opener. Tremain recorded figures of 1-78 in his 10 overs and Mennie finished with 0-82.

Faf du Plessis notched his sixth ODI ton against Australia in Johannesburg, yesterday.

John Hastings was the pick of the visiting attack with 3-57 in his 10.

South Africa, in turn, were able to apply pressure with the ball and never let the Australian scoring tempo climb to the required rate.

David Warner (50) and Travis Head (51) were the only batsmen to threaten big scores but they could not convert to three figures to give their side a chance.

The third ODI will be played in Durban on Wednesday when South Africa will have an early chance to wrap up the series.

United States reclaim Ryder Cup, ending losing streak

By Larry Fine CHASKA, Minnesota,(Reuters)-Ryan Moore ended a long wait for U.S. Ryder Cup redemption when he clinched a rousing win over Europe at Hazeltine yesterday, beating Lee Westwood to allow the Americans to reclaim the golden trophy in golf’s top team competition.

With Westwood in for bogey at the 18th, Moore rolled his birdie putt to within one foot and the tap-in was conceded to seal a 1-up win and clinch a 15-10 lead for the United States, with 14 1/2 points required for their victory.

Team mates, families and friends poured out onto the green to celebrate what ended as a 17-11 thumping.

Ricciardo savours Formula One success in Malaysia

By Abhishek Takle SEPANG, Malaysia,(Reuters)-Daniel Ricciardo quenched his thirst for an elusive maiden win of the season with his trademark ‘shoey’ champagne celebration after winning Sunday’s Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix.

“I need a drink,” the exhausted Australian, who took the lead after world champion Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes retired with a blown engine that caught fire, told his Red Bull team on the cooldown lap of a hot and sweltering race.

Ricciardo, who led Max Verstappen in the first Red Bull one-two since the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix, wasted no time when he climbed the podium, pouring champagne into his racing boot and chugging it down in his now famous ‘shoey’ celebration.

After a rousing finish in which the Spaniard closed with four birdies in a row and Mickelson birdied four of the last five holes, they appropriately ended up all square.

Henrik Stenson and rookies Thomas Pieters and Rafa Cabrera-Bello closed the gap for Europe, narrowing the U.S. lead to 10 1/2 to 9 1/2, but the Americans held a big edge in the later matches.

Sweden’s Stenson beat Jordan Spieth, Pieters of Belgium topped JB Holmes and Spain’s Cabrera-Bello defeated PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker -- all by 3 and 2.

The 24-year-old Pieters set a European rookie record by registering four points and became the first Ryder debutant since 1999 to play in all five sessions.

Reed and McIlroy set the tone for a brilliant day of golf, with the eighth hole producing an outstanding Ryder moment.

McIlroy rolled in a long birdie bomb and roared in delight, playing to the suddenly silenced crowd by putting his hand to his ear and shouting, “I can’t hear you, I can’t hear you,” in extravagant fashion.

Reed then matched McIlroy by pouring in his 20-foot birdie putt to an explosive celebration by the crowd, and wagged his finger at McIlroy and waved his arms to whoop up even louder cheers.

As he walked off the green, Reed was met by a smiling McIlroy, who bumped fists with his rival in a classic Ryder Cup tableau.

Dwayne St. Kitts was the main destructor for the Pouderoyen line up,as he nailed home a hat-trick in the 30th, 71st and 78th minutes after his side had already secured a 3-0 lead over the opposition through an Essan Nelson brace in the 10th and 57th minutes and another double off the booth of Quessey Alleyne in the 12th and 18th minutes.

Beavers’ consolation goal came from Leroy Semple in the 69th minute.

GFF partners with Habitat for Humanity Guyana Inc..

I think all the members are proud of themselves for assisting in this project, I think it was a great experience as well….”, the words of Golden Jaguars’ striker, Vurlon Mills, who was among six team members assisting in the construction of a house being built by Habitat For Humanity Guyana Inc. (HFHGY) The partnership between the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), via the Golden Jaguars, and HFHGY saw the team members, last Saturday, assisting in the laying of boards for the floor of the house owned by Ms. Lynette Cambridge at Farm, East Bank Demerara.

The other team members who participated in the HFHGY partnership were Andrew Nestor, Cash London, Pernel Schultz, Colin Nelson and Daniel Wilson.

Malik blasts Pakistan to ODI series win

SHOAIB Malik’s fireworks and a second career-best show in as many matches from Babar Azam helped Pakistan to a 59-run win over West Indies and an one-day international series victory.

Babar had scored 120 – his maiden international 50over ton – in the first match of the series, but went even better on Sunday once again in the familiar surrounds of the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, scoring 123 as Pakistan racked up an imposing 337-5.

Despite the 21-year-old’s impressive efforts, the undoubted star of the innings was Malik, who smashed six sixes in an 84-ball 90 – including one which deposited Windies spinner Sulieman Benn out of the ground.

FITTING end to the Formula 1600 series was what Calvin Ming managed on Sunday at the Virginia International Raceway when he finished second in the 21st and final race of the series.

Ming, who narrowly missed podium with two fourth place finishes in the earlier rounds on Friday and Saturday,lost in a photo finish to the eventual winner of the Championship,Neil Verhagen.

H o w e v e r, N e i l , w h o drives for team K-Hill,had the benefit of drafting off Calvin as the headed into the final corner.

Speaking to the media after the race, Ming said. “It was a good experience to finish on

the podium again and a good way to end the season.I think the season overall for my first year in USA was really good; I learned a lot and I’m just looking forward to 2017.”

Ming,who finished a close fourth overall in the Championship behind K-Hill drivers Verhagen, Peter Portante and team mate Phillippe Denes,was full of praise for his team.

“It was a good season with them, Team Pelfrey, they have helped me out so

much with the coaching, the mechanics, I can’t give them enough thanks.

“The line-up of drivers this year where everyone was so talented. We had a good set of drivers with us; everyone brought something different to the table so it was a good learning experience.”

While he may not have won the Championship, Ming noted that many positives came out of the championship.

“Originally, when we started the F1600, we did it so we can learn as much as we can going forward into the higher championships

from next year, what I take away from next year is a lot of car control.”

“What people know or may not know is that the F1600 don’t have any downforce with no wings,so I’ll take away all like the car experience I’ve learnt here.”
