injuries.

The doctor’s car that was damaged in the accident torcar PWW 554 driven by Corporal Ansel McDonald of Number 50 Village was proceeding north on the western side of the Bengal Public Road, when motorcar PSS 4327 driven by Jalaluddin Ally, a doctor attached to the Skeldon Hospital and of Number 52 Village, tried to overtake Mc Donald.

The report stated that around the same time, a truck was being reversed out of a gas station and the doctor attempted to overtake both the policeman and the truck, but did not notice another car heading in his direction.

In a bid to avoid a headon collision, the doctor drove

into the corner of the road and in doing so, he collided with the left front side of the corporal’s car.

The impact caused Ally to lose control of his vehicle and crash into a parked tractor owned by Anand Rambrich. Ally was taken to the Skeldon Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries sustained from the accident.

He later told this publication that it was the officer who hit him from behind, since he was in front and slowed down when he saw the truck being reversed.

“While in the vicinity of the gas station at Bengal, I noticed a truck reversing, so

I slowed down as I did feel an impact from behind and the vehicle spin around and slam into a tractor. The impression on the back of my bumper will show that I was the one in front who was hit… It was a miracle that I only came out with minor injuries, because it was the driver side that received the brunt of the impact,” he said.

Ally noted that he was taken to hospital where he was treated, but upon his return, the car belonging to the corporal had already been removed from the scene.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with this publication corroborated Ally’s version of the incident.

Meanwhile, Anand Rambrich, the owner of the tractor wants to know who will fix his now damaged tractor.

Several parts, including the axle, rim and tyres are damaged beyond repair and will have to be replaced.

A TRUCK, GWW 4811, transporting about 44 drums of diesel while driving up a hill turned turtle after developing a mechanical problem killing three persons.

The accident occurred on Saturday on the Kumung-Kumung Trail, Puruni River, Region Seven

(Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

Dead are Clifford Anthony,24, a porter of Itaballi Landing; David Choi-Weenam, 52, a miner of Four Miles, Bartica; and Jude James, 39, a miner of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

The police said that their bodies

were being transported to Georgetown for storage and post-mortems.

The driver, Ravi Dookram, 29, of 757 Section C, Block Y Golden Grove, EBD and his stepson Steve Carr, 18, were taken to the Bartica Hospital . The driver was later flown to the Georgetown Public

Hospital.

The police at Bartica are currently investigating the fatal accident.

At the time of the accident,there were two persons inside the cabin with the driver and two others in the tray, the police added.

Severe punishment needed –– Samuels says rogue wardens continue to give prison administration bad name

ONE of Guyana’s largest prisons, the famous ‘Camp Street Prison’ was set alight and burnt to the ground just last year. At that time and even before then, there was the cry of the prisons in Guyana being overcrowded, especially that of Camp Street.

As a result of that fire, the majority of prisoners were taken to two of the other holding facilities – Lusignan and Mazaruni.

The situation of overcrowded prisons therefore continues and may have even gotten worse, even with the best efforts of everyone in authority.

Since the increase in the prison population at Lusignan, this institution has been in the news much more, especially because of the intensification of security, more searches of prisoners, cells and the general prison environment. In fact, just recently, there was a ‘prison break,’ and three prisoners escaped from the Lusignan Prison, while a few others attempted to light fires about

the prison.

Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels in an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle, said while prisoners have numbers and many times they tend to use that to their advantage, the prison service has not been without help.

“In Guyana, we have very oiled joint-services collaboration, so it is never the prison service alone.

We can heavily rely on the support of our sister services in our times of need and that is very much commendable.

We have a responsibility to ensure that this nation is kept safe; unfortunately, all of our staff members do not support that position.

So, many times they aid prisoners in terms of their deviant behaviour; in terms of their access to drugs; to cellphones and sometimes you wonder if persons fail to recognise the danger cellphones can pose, not only in Guyana, but globally.”

Samuels explained that it is in such situations that the prison officers who are committed and dedicated to the job, are seen as ‘upstarts’

He said while he understands that prisoners use their body parts to traffic contraband into the prisons, he feels that it is impossible for them to traffic some of the phones that prison officers find within the prison or on prisoners.

Undoubtedly, he said, there is some collusion between prisoners and staff or staff and prisoners’ relatives to smuggle illegal items into the prison.

SEVERE PUNISHMENT NEEDED Samuels said he does not think that the penalty for such offences committed by prison officers is severe enough. He said in the crafting of laws like

some countries abroad, persons working with organisations such as the prison, should not have the same sentences if they are caught trafficking in marijuana, cellphones and other contraband items.

“There must be a certain section of the law; just as how we now have various categories of murders, there must [be] various categories of ‘trafficking’ in the prisons.

So if you traffic you must not do the same maximum time like others, you must do some super time; you must really do some super time; it must be something like the same speed with which it cross your mind that injustice, the same speed something must erase it, because you would know that the rest of your life you will spend behind bars,” Samuels asserted.

He added: “These are some things we need to do; persons must realise that if you are entrusted in a position where you are able to contribute towards positive changes in other people’s lives, then you must not deliberately allow them to continue in

the same habit that led to their imprisonment in the first place.”

RELATIVES AND FRIENDS Samuels sought to speak directly to family members and friends of persons who are in prison, saying that they have a serious responsibility to help to ensure that persons who are in prison do the right things and focus on rehabilitation.

He stated that many times family members support the bad habits of persons who are in prison, because it is these persons that are contacted, whether illegally or through legitimate or illegal phone calls by some of the prisoners, who would then ask them to supply credit, drugs and other forms of contraband items, which get into the prisons.

“If they truly want to see a change in the offender’s life, then they have to come on board and help us ensure that those persons are properly rehabilitated,” Samuels urged.

Saudi Arabia calls Khashoggi killing ‘grave mistake,’ says prince not aware

WASHINGTON/LONDON (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia on Sunday called the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at its Istanbul consulate a “huge and grave mistake,” but sought to shield its powerful crown prince from the widening crisis, saying Mohammed bin Salman had not been aware.

The comments from Foreign Minister Adel alJubeir were some of the most direct yet from Riyadh, which has given multiple and conflicting accounts about Khashoggi’s killing on Oct. 2, first denying his death and later admitting it amid an international outcry.

“This was an operation that was a rogue operation.

This was an operation where individuals ended up exceeding the authorities and responsibilities they had,” Jubeir said on the U.S. broadcaster Fox. “They made the mistake when they killed Jamal Khashoggi in the consulate and they tried to cover up for it,” he said. The weeks of denial and lack of credible evidence in the face of allegations from Turkish officials that Khashoggi had been killed, have shaken global confidence in ties with the world’s top oil exporter.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said Saudi Arabia’s admission that the Washington Post columnist was killed in a fistfight was a “good first step but not enough,” though he added, it was premature to discuss sanctions against Riyadh.

Three European powers Germany, Britain and France - pressed Riyadh to provide facts, and Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany would not export arms to Saudi Arabia while uncertainty over Khashoggi’s fate persisted.

Late on Sunday, the Saudi Press Agency said both Saudi King Salman and Prince Mohammed had called Khashoggi’s son, Salah, to express condolences.

Jubeir had extended condolences to Khashoggi’s family earlier on Sunday.

“Unfortunately, a huge and grave mistake was made and I assure them that those responsible will be held accountable for this,” he told Fox. Jubeir said the Saudis did not know how Khashoggi, a Saudi national and U.S. resident, had been killed or where his body was. He also said Prince Mohammed was not responsible.

Khashoggi vanished after entering the consulate to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage.

After two weeks of denying any involvement in the 59-year-old’s disappearance, Saudi Arabia on Saturday said Khashoggi, a critic of

the crown prince, died during a fight in the building. An hour later, another Saudi official attributed the death to a chokehold.

“Nothing can justify this killing and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms,” Germany, Britain and France said in their joint statement.

“There remains an urgent need for clarification of exactly what happened ... beyond the hypotheses that have been raised so far in the Saudi investigation, which need to be backed by facts to be considered credible.”

Reflecting international scepticism over its account, a senior Saudi government official laid out a new version that contradicts previous explanations.

The latest account includes details on how 15 Saudis sent to confront Khashoggi had threatened him with being drugged and kidnapped and killed him in a chokehold when he resisted. A member of the team then dressed in Khashoggi’s clothes to make it appear as if he had left the consulate.

ERDOGAN TO SPEAK Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate by the Saudi agents and his body cut up.

Turkish sources say authorities have an audio recording purportedly documenting Khashoggi’s murder.

In a speech on Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appeared to suggest he was getting ready to release some information about the Turkish investigation, and would do so at his weekly speech on Tuesday to members of his ruling AK Party.

Chilean court orders Catholic church to pay damages over abuse: report SANTIAGO (Reuters) Chile’s Court of Appeal has ordered the office of Santiago’s Archbishop to pay $450 million pesos ($650,000) to three men who alleged that they were sexually abused for decades by Chilean priest Fernando Karadima, a local newspaper reported on Sunday.

Citing a copy of a leaked judgment, La Tercera said the three judges who heard the case on Thursday found in favour of an appeal for “moral damages” against

the church, for allegedly covering up the crimes. The case was previously rejected by a lower court for lack of evidence.

Reuters could not independently confirm the report. The Santiago Archbishopric, which could appeal to Chile’s Supreme Court, said it was considering “what steps to take.”

If confirmed by the court on Monday, it would be the first damages order to have been leveled against Chile’s powerful Roman Catholic Church for a scandal of

Thousands of Hondurans in U.S.-bound migrant caravan on way to Mexico

TAPACHULA, Mexico (Reuters) - A U.S.-bound caravan of thousands of mostly Honduran migrants whom President Donald Trump has declared unwelcome, began pouring into the Mexican border city of Tapachula on Sunday, setting up impromptu camps in public parks under a heavy rain.

Many members of the caravan, exhausted from the hours-long trek on foot from the Guatemalan border, mostly ignored police offers to board buses heading to a migrant shelter because of suspicions they might be deported instead.

The migrants have defied threats by Trump that he will close the U.S.-Mexico border if the caravan advances, as well as warnings from the Mexican government that they risk deportation if they cannot justify seeking asylum in Mexico. Police in riot gear shadowed the caravan’s arrival along a southern highway, but did not impede their journey. Among the throngs hiking into the centre of the city was Roger Pineda, a 16-year-old Honduran.

“I just want to find some food and a place to sleep,” he said, explaining he joined the caravan last week with five family members and a group of friends from the violent city of San Pedro Sula. “I hope Trump allows us to make it to the other side,” he said.

In Guatemala, local media reported that around 1,000 migrants were traveling north en route to the Mexican border.

Earlier on Sunday, a column of people marched under a burning sun as a military helicopter circled low overhead.

Many migrants said they were fleeing a toxic mix of violence, poverty and corruption in Central America.

Most said they felt safer advancing in a large group.

“We’re going to make it, we’re going to keep moving so long as they don’t stop us,” said Honduran Jaffe Borjas, 17, marching alongside a childhood friend at the head of the column that stretched far down the highway to the horizon.

Along the route north to Tapachula, about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of the border, some broke into song.

“If you send us back, we will return!” a large crowd shouted in unison.

“We are not criminals, we are workers!”

Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador adopted a sympathetic tone toward the caravan on Sunday, promising to provide people with work permits in a speech to supporters in Tuxtla-Gutierrez, about 180 miles (290 km) north of Tapachula.

“I want to tell them they can count on us,” said Lopez Obrador to a smattering of applause, reiterating that he is seeking Trump’s support to help fund a development plan that could alleviate poverty in Central America and southern Mexico.

Since the convoy formed last weekend, Trump has threatened to halt aid to Honduras and Guatemala, and potentially close the U.S. border with Mexico with the help of the military if the migrants’

march is not stopped.

Mexico’s government has said throughout the past week that it would register the migrants and process requests for asylum. Those attempting to skip the process would face deportation, but the size of the caravan will test Mexico, which has sought help from the United Nations to manage the issue.

The Honduran government has blamed the political opposition back home for encouraging the exodus of migrants. On Saturday, Mexican immigration authorities said they had only allowed some 640 migrants through the official border crossing on a bridge spanning the Suchiate River.

The slow pace prompted thousands to cross the river illegally by raft or swimming, according to local officials and migrant organisers.

Domestic Violence

HUMANS like to think that we are better than other species, but are we? While violence is the antithesis of civilised behaviour, people continue to engage in such deplorable conduct, particularly in the form of intimate-partner violence by men against women in a home setting, in other words, domestic violence against women.

In August 2018, at the opening of the 20th Biennial Convention of the National Congress of Women, President Granger said, “Unless we take concerted action to eliminate violence against women, we will never remove the scourge of inequality. People will not find it even necessary to consider providing equal access for girlchildren to go to school.

We need to deal with this problem of violence against

girls and women. It is not easy. It is not just sexual violence, it is physical violence as well. It is chopping and killing, murder…It is the daily subjugation and suppression of women…”

President Granger was, at that time, alluding to one of Guyana’s most prevalent and enduring scourges. In 2017, just last year, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) received 1,787 reports of domestic violence, 482 of those from ‘B’ Division alone; and 306 from ‘A’ Division (which includes Georgetown). Unfortunately, very few of those reports resulted in prosecutions because, according to the Domestic Violence Prevention Centre (DVPC), “Many women make complaints to the police, but do not follow through with prosecution of the perpetrator. In most instances,

abused women would attend court and testify that they no longer wish to proceed with the matter; hence, the case is dismissed against the defendant.”

For example, recently, the police had charged a man with assault after he allegedly stabbed his spouse several times with a knife. It was revealed to the court that the man is in the habit of beating the woman. As such, the prosecutor requested that the man be remanded to prison; the request was upheld by Magistrate Leron Daly who expressed concern for the woman’s safety. However, when the man made another court appearance two weeks later, the victim expressed her desire to not proceed with the matter.

The too frequent disastrous results of such failures to follow through on reports

is sometimes tragic: in 2017, the GPF reported that 10 women had been killed by the hands of the men who claimed to love them.

More recently, in June 2018, two women were killed. On June 10, the police charged 21-year-old Rick Sewcharran with the murder of his girlfriend, Sasia Adams; and on June 22, Tovonie Simmons, 28, a mother of four, was stabbed to death by her former common-law partner, Imran Lyte.

The reasons for the specific incidents of domestic violence may be numerous, but the underlying problem may be a single issue: many men think that women are their property. President Granger captured that idea – and its result – when he said, “The subordination of women, which still exists in so many societies, has been

responsible for depriving countries of the contribution that women can make to national development, to their families and to making societies more humane.”

The United Nations (UN) agrees, in the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (1993), the UN stated that “Violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, which has led to domination over and discrimination against women by men, and to the prevention of the full advancement of women.”

Sadly, many women remain for too long in abusive relationships. The GPF reports that on average, a woman leaves a relationship after up to 7 to 10 incidents of violence against her.

Many women say that they

are economically dependent on their partners; they have no other place to go; they are staying because of children; or they don’t want their relationship to fail. In any case, the current situation is untenable, and must be addressed.

Government’s policies of gender equality and empowerment of women have resulted in a number of programmes and initiatives which are intended to result in fewer incidents of domestic abuse. Training of law-enforcement officers, workshops for women, educating men, provision of safe-houses, access to counselling, and passage of legislation are all moves in the right direction. However, still, too many women continue to suffer at the hands of violent men, and it has to be stopped.

State’s efforts must be supported by alert and efficient prosecutors Dear Editor I HAVE been following developments in the courts, with regard to criminal cases involving some former ministers and officials of the former PPP/C government.

Against the background of some recent acquittals. there has to be concern with the prosecutorial capacity of the state to effect convictions against those accused of crimes against the state.

This state of affairs is not due to a lack of evidence, since the audit findings have been supported by in-depth police investigations, which resulted in charges being laid. It would seem that there is a problem with the state prosecutors not being au fait with the particular sections of the law which ought to support the intended charges. This was clearly the case when a former PPP/C

minister of government and former senior personnel of the same ministry, were acquitted because of being charged under the incorrect law.

One cannot fault the court’s decision, since it is a laid-down dictum that the case must suit the law; however, one is entitled to query whether such a defect had not been observed from the inception, in the matter of the state versus the minister and her former staff and the necessary advice given.

Why was this very important matter that cost the state millions of dollars allowed to proceed through a trial, only to be advised by the presiding officer, at the end, that the charges were bad in law?

This result is not what an anticipating public would have expected, given its reasonable expectations that the accused should be convicted, because of the report-

edly strong case that had been laid against the offenders.

Editor, one accepts the fact that our judicial system is being challenged by a particular category of offences which it is engaging for the first time. It explains why there have been so many seminars and training engagements convened for the entire judiciary, so as to bring about a better cognisance on the part of judicial officers, as to what is required.

Yet, it has to be recognised that in such critical legal matters that involve former high officials, that there should be a calibre of legal prosecutors whose knowledge and expertise of the law should be evident, bringing it to bear on proceedings. This has to be a requirement, lest the guilty be allowed to escape the condign arm of justice The state cannot afford any more of

these “lapses”; for these only continue to feed the immoral minds of a category of citizen who have been shouting “witch hunting.” They become further energised by such acquittals, believing in the process that such criminalities should be rewarded by non-punishment. As a government that has commenced to re-fashion a society on good morals and respect for the law, this must not be allowed to be the understanding of what this new dispensation represents.

Editor, I do believe in the justness of the state taking condign action against those who steal its resources in any form.

But its efforts must be supported by a more alert, robust, and aggressive prosecutorial system.

‘We are the kernel of public service delivery’ – Public Service Minister tells CAPAM Ministers’ Forum PUBLIC Service Minister, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, on Sunday said Guyana is primed and focused on building a roadmap to good governance.

The minister was at the time addressing government ministers from across the Commonwealth who gathered at the Marriott Hotel for a Ministers’ Forum prior to the opening of the 7th Biennial Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM) Conference today.

The forum saw participants discussing good, effective and efficient governance relative to their respective countries.

“This is the 7th such conference and the first to be held in Guyana…. The very nature of our portfolios and our nexus with CAPAM, have determined our focus over the years. We are in the business of providing the framework for the delivery of public services; fashioning the structure and procedures for the delivery of those services; and regulating the engagement of the manpower for the ultimate delivery of those services.

In a sense, we are the kernel of public services delivery,” said Dr. Roopnaraine.

Themed ‘Goal to Action: Strengthening the Public Sector Governance for Efficient and Effective Implementation,’ the public service minister told participants that Guyana is eager to share its strategy for development within the frame-

work of sustainability provided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Guyana will take the opportunity to share with you its perspective as articulated in Guyana’s Green State Agenda, which, in fact, is the country’s development strategy. It should be recognised that it is governance-efficiency’s economical use of resources, and governance-effectiveness’ goal-driven use of resources that will be a major, if not the final determinant in sustainability. As [The ministers], the kernel of the administration and the management of our nation’s resources, [we] are well placed to contribute to the goal of sustainability,” the public service minister said.

Minister of State Joseph Harmon said the CAPAM conference meetings push all attendees to be innovative and learn from each other’s best practice.

“The Kaleidoscope of cultures, experiences, and diverse public service leadership experiences here from across our commonwealth of nations places us in a unique position to adopt innovative measures, take them forward, and see them through.

[The] exchange [of] our experiences of best practices that, once adopted, could improve significantly, our ability to enhance public service efficiency and its effective delivery to all citizens in our respective countries,” said the minister of state.

“There is a dimension that is often, I think, overlooked… The 17 Sustainable Development Goals that the 193 States adopted constitute a novel approach to global governance… that process itself, where goal-setting

features as a key part of the strategy is, in effect, governance through goals… While the SDG’s hold great potential in the regard, the collective success will depend on a number of institutional factors, such as the extent to which states formalise their commitments, strengthen their related global governance arrangements, translate the global ambitions into national context, integrate sectoral policies and maintain flexibility in the governance mechanism,” said

Minister Greenidge.

Meanwhile, Director of the Governance and Peace Directorate within the Commonwealth Secretariat, Katalaina Sapolu said a key characteristic of good governance is a government that is accountable to its citizens.

“The importance of governance in management of national development cannot be over-emphasised. Indeed, governance is about formation and stewardship of the formal and informal rules

that regulate the public realm, including its political, economic and social dimensions. In this regard, there is need for robust regulations, clear minds of accountability, and the ability for all stakeholders, including the public to be involved in scrutinising the operations of public institutions and how they deliver services. Citizens should be able to hold service providers accountable,” she said. (Ministry of the Presidency)

Jagdeo’s deceptive promise of the bridge exposed Dear Editor BHARRAT Jagdeo’s continuous deceptive promises of his party caring for the Guyanese people has just been cruelly exposed, with the announcement by the Berbice Bridge Company of newly proposed rates of toll; these can only be described as burdensome and posing a threat to the daily livelihoods of Berbicians – his mainstay constituency of political support.

We must remember that although the construction of the bridge was of the ar-

rangement of public/private/partnership, that among the latter would have been Jagdeo’s best friend.

The reality is that this bridge has not been bringing in the expected rate of returns, and this has been due to fewer vehicles making use of the facility. In fact, the largest investor, the National Insurance Scheme, has not even begun to receive a penny on its investment. One can now better appreciate the former Chief Executive Officer Maurice Arjoon’s, of the New Building Society, refusal to be bullied into participating in such a project, for which

he was punished by dismissal on a set of trumped-up accusations, compliments of the evil machinations of Freedom House.

It would seem that Dr Surendra Persaud, who is also chairman of the National Insurance Board, perhaps conceived the idea of killing two birds with one stone, which would include ensuring that the board also recoups its investment.

This chairman must be informed that the founders of the NIS would never have envisaged such unconscionable burdening of the citizenry, as a means of investment returns. Not those visionaries!

I never doubted that this would have occurred, with regard the Berbice Bridge, particularly the private investment segment.

Editor, it is instructive to note that Jagdeo has condemned the “killer” increases, but that is “with his mouth,” as we Guyanese would say. Let us see if he would bring out his constituents to picket the BBCI office. Afraid to offend your best friend, Bobby?

Urgent need to step up efforts to end global hunger

SPEAKERS at the global World Food Day ceremony in Rome called for stronger political will and more financial support to end hunger and malnutrition in all its forms, urging the international community to step up its efforts until everyone has enough and quality food.

This year’s theme - “Our actions are our future: a Zero Hunger world by 2030 is possible” - underscores the urgent need to step up collective efforts to reach the Zero Hunger goal. World Food Day is celebrated in over 150 countries around the world.

“The struggle against hunger urgently demands generous financing, the abolition of trade barriers and, above all, greater resilience in the face of climate change, economic crises and warfare,” Pope Francis said in a special message read out at the event.

He urged for a Zero Hunger approach that is more proactive and sustained over time, and concrete actions - to increase funds to foster peace and the development of peoples, and prevent weapons and their trade.

The Pope also said that it was regretful that international solidarity appears to be “cooling”, and decried the lack of fundamental political will and enthusiasm of responsible political leaders, whom he described “often absorbed purely by electoral concerns or focused on biased, transitory or limited perspectives”.

He underlined that Zero Hunger is not only about feeding but also about nourishing people, providing them with the nutrients they need for healthy, productive lives.

“We are witnessing the globalization of obesity,” he said.

“If we don’t find concrete ways to stop this, the number of obese people will soon be as high as the number of undernourished people in the world,” he warned, urging for improving at the same time the production and consumption of healthy food in a sustainable way.

José Graziano da Silva gave the example of Brazil, Peru and China, lauding them for having reduced hunger significantly in a short period of time - evidence that Zero Hunger is possible if there is political will and financial support.

In a video address, UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the deaths of half of the world’s infants due to hunger “intolerable” and called on everyone “to do their part towards sustainable food systems”.

FAO Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition, King Letsie III of Lesotho also spoke at the event.

“Rural diets are also gradually shifting away from traditional, healthy and organic food to those that are more common in urban areas. A whole of a society’s effort is required to overcome this problem in a similar manner as was done to fight other public challenges such as HIV and malar-

ia,” he said.

Queen Letizia of Spain, FAO Special Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition and one of the keynote speakers, urged: “Let us ensure that the private sector commits more, that comprehensive education for health is part of the school curriculum.

Let’s us make sure that consumer step up their role, and really know what they are buying and eating.”

President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Gilbert F. Houngbo said in his remarks: “For African agriculture to reach its potential, it needs investment. Not just in higher productivity and profitability, but in infrastructure, in research, and in policies that result in value chains that are inclusive of smallholders -- and in particular women and youth. We need the political will and budgetary commitments, and more importantly we need to transform challenges into opportunities for rural women and youth.”

David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) for his part said: “There’s good news. We’ve made great progress in the world in the past 100 years. But today, we know we’re going in the wrong direction. With all our wealth, all our expertise, all our technology - shame on us that any child should go hungry. We will all be held accountable.

But I do believe that if we all work together, with the commitment of the men and women around the world, we can achieve Zero Hunger.”

Zero Hunger is not only about feeding people Global hunger has risen for the third consecutive year, affecting one in nine or 821 million people.

But other forms of malnutrition have

also increased. In 2017, some 150 million children under the age of five (22 percent) were stunted, one in three women of reproductive age was anaemic, and about 2 billion people were overweight, including 38 million overweight children under the age of five, and 672 million of obese adults.

Whilst hunger is mostly restricted to areas ravaged by conflicts, droughts and extreme poverty, obesity is everywhere and is increasing all around the world. It also comes at a huge socio-economic cost - it is a risk factor for diseases such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer, and its global economic impact is about $2 trillion per year (2.8 percent of the global GDP).

Obesity and anaemia are on the rise as the current global food systems have made processed and industrialized food - high in fat, sugar, salt and chemical additives - more available and accessible.

Storm causes flooding in Matthew’s Ridge

SEVERAL residents in Matthew’s Ridge are now grappling with the aftermath of a heavy rainstorm that caused sections of the town to be flooded.

The heavy shower, which lasted for about three or more hours, caused the main creek that runs through the town to overtop, flooding an area within Matthew’s Ridge called the “flat.” Matthew’s Ridge is located within the Barima-Waini region.

According to residents there, the poorly maintained drainage network in the area, including that of a blocked creek, was among the main contributing factors.

of Matthew’s Ridge, told the Guyana Chronicle that he started cleaning his waterlogged home late Saturday night after the floodwaters had receded.

The heavy rainstorm started around 15:00hrs on Saturday and lasted for about three hours, causing the main creek that runs through the town to overtop.

According to Smartt, the overtopping occurred in “no time,” because the mouth of the creek is currently blocked with debris.

“The creek is blocked with trees, it needs clearing, it needs cleaning,” he told this newspaper.

According to him, the floodwaters not only covered his yard, but parts of his house as well. “In my house, the water was about 10 to 12

inches high,” Smartt pointed out, while noting that he managed to secure some of his household articles before the water became unmanageable.

Another resident, Lowanda Griffith, said she was severely affected by the flash- flood, dubbing it the “biggest one” in months.

“The water deh all over in meh house, meh kitchen, bedroom, all over,” Griffith said, while pointing out that her chairs and stereo music system have been damaged.

“I barely get to save my fridge,” she told this newspaper.

Like Smartt, Griffith said the flashflood could have been prevented. “Nobody ain’t doing nothing to help us. The NDC needs to do something with the

The resident said it is time the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) addresses the issue, noting that Saturday’s flashflood is just one of many that have occurred for the year.

I keep telling them, the people living in front of me, they have pit latrine, so when we get flood, is everything coming down,” Griffith said as she expressed her frustration.

Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, contended that the NDC had got funds to desilt the creek

and clear the koker, but not much was done. According to information reaching this newspaper, approximately 10 families, some of whom have businesses, were affected on the “flat.”

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Executive Member Christopher Jones, who has been in contact with the affected residents, said when the issue of the flood was brought to the attention of the NDC and regional officials there, they reportedly showed little interest.

“When residents became aware of the seriousness of the situation, several calls were reportedly made to Mr. Brian Peters, vice-chairman of the NDC, a PPP councillor in the Matarkai sub-region with direct re-

sponsibility for the very constituency, but he could not be reached. The residents also tried contacting the NDC chairperson, but their efforts again proved futile. Calls to the phone of Regional Chairman Mr. Brentol Ashley, who was in the sub-region at Port Kaituma, also went unanswered,” Jones said on popular social media platform, Facebook.

According to him, while the residents were battling the floods, their representatives were in Port Kaituma at a political meeting campaigning for the November 12 Local Government Elections.

CCJ president perplexed at C’bean people’s non-acceptance of regional court BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — President of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Justice Adrian Saunders, says after 50 years of political independence, he remains perplexed that Caribbean people are still finding “excuses” in support of the London-based Privy Council as the region’s final court.

Justice Saunders, who received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) on Saturday, said that he, however, remains confident that like other regional institutions, the CCJ will be embraced by all the people of the Caribbean.

“I remain confident that, as is the case with, for exam-

ple, The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the Caribbean Examinations Council(CXC), and of course, The University of the West Indies (UWI), to name just a few, the time will come when the CCJ also will be recognised as another of those Caribbean institutions whose vital contribution to the region can almost be taken for granted,” he told a dinner in Barbados on Friday night, on behalf of his fellow graduand Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana and Professor of Entomology at the Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science.

The CCJ was established in 2001 to replace the Privy Council as the region’s final court. But while all the Ca-

ribbean countries have signed on to the Court’s Original Jurisdiction, only Barbados, Belize, Dominica and Guyana are signatories to the Appellate Jurisdiction of the Court that also serves as an international tribunal interpreting the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas that governs the 15-member regional integration movement, CARICOM. Antigua and Barbuda and Grenada will hold national referendums on November 6, on whether or not to replace the Privy Council with the CCJ. Justice Saunders told the ceremony that it is vital for Caribbean people with their fractured experiences over the past four centuries to have self-belief.

“I was at one of my other places when I got a call telling me that my house was catching afire. When I reached here, they told me that the fire started from the back, but I want to ask some questions to some people. However, when I called the fire people it was enough time for them to reach here to save this place; because when I get the call, it was late and I reach here and went up the steps and was able to take out a suitcase. The place was ok at that time,” he said.

He said that by the time the

firemen and tenders reached the building, they had their own problems because the hose was tangled up and at the same time, they did not have any water. This caused the house to burn down, said Gittens.

Cassis Fortune, who resided in the back of the building with her mother who is blind, said she and her mother had breakfast and then decided to take a rest.

“I told my mother that when I get up I would cook, because tomorrow I have to go to work for three o’clock. Now, while I was lying down I kept feeling a terrible heat and seeing smoke. Then I asked mummy what really was

going on and she said she ain’t know. Then I checked all around and everything was alright, but when I reach outside the neighbour said that there was fire.”

She said immediately the neighbours went into action, starting to throw water from outside as others called the fire service.

Fortune said she was convinced that the fire was coming from under the building, even though nobody is living under there.

Fortune and her mother lost everything in the blaze.

“All that we owned went up in flames, even my passport. Because of the heat and the smoke

we were not able to save anything from the house; but thank God me and my mother safe.”

Meanwhile, Gittens said what has compounded his losses is the fact that since his fire insurance expired, he was not able to have it renewed; and so he has no coverage for all his losses.

“I took a loan from the bank to finish my house; this was my pension and I really struggled to make it happen. In fact, the last valuation I had done because of the loan put the house at a value of $30 million.

This is big losses for me now,” he told the Guyana Chronicle.

Mahdia to become town on Thursday

PRESIDENT David Granger will officially declare Mahdia a town this Thursday.

Ahead of the official declaration, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Communities and the residents of Mahdia, is making preparations for the historic event.

Mahdia, situated in the Potaro-Siparuni region, will be the 10th town to be established in Guyana.

Attending the grand declaration ceremony along with the President, will be ministers of government, mayors and deputy mayors from the other municipalities, toshaos and regional councillors from within the Potaro-Siparuni region. A monument is also being erected to mark the historic event.

Mahdia joins Georgetown, Linden, New Amsterdam, Anna Regina, Corriverton, Rose Hall, Bartica, Lethem and Mabaruma with township status.

President Granger, during his recent address in the Parliament of Guyana, underscored the importance of local democracy.

He said his government is proud to have restored local democracy on March 18, 2016 after a 22-year hiatus. “Those historic Local

Government Elections have created a democratic dividend. Municipalities, including the newly created towns Bartica, Lethem, Mabaruma and, more recently, Mahdia and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, are being energised and revitalised. Residents are taking a greater interest in the well-being and development of their communities,” the President told the Parliament.

He noted that the Communities Ministry is supporting the work of local democratic organs.

“Your government will ensure that respect is paid to local democratic organs and that we will strengthen their capacity to deliver effective and efficient public services. The first National Conference of Local Democratic Organs (NCLDO), held in June 2018, was aimed at fostering cooperation and collaboration between and among local democratic organs; and with regional administrations and the central government,” he further stated.

Mahdia’s declaration as a town is happening at a time when the country is preparing for the holding of Local Government Elections (LGEs) billed for November 12, across 80 Local Authority Areas (LAAs).

The Meteorological Service is warning the country to brace for more rain and flooding until 18:00 hrs on Tuesday.

While widespread flooding has so far been confined largely to the eastern and central regions of Trinidad, the Met Office is warning residents in areas not yet affected to plan an emergency response to safeguard their lives and properties.

The Met Office said the active ITCZ will continue to produce inter-

mittent periods of rain or showers or thunderstorms until Tuesday. This could lead to flash flooding and exacerbate the existing riverine flooding. It said the showers may be heavy or torrential at times and produce damaging gusty winds.

The Met Office warned that preparations to protect life, livelihood and property especially by those who live in the Caroni River Basin, should be “rushed to completion immediately” if not completed as yet.

“Be on the alert for rising river levels and possible overspill. Do not take unnecessary risks. There is a very high potential for major damage to property and infrastructure and for multiple lives to be lost.”

Meanwhile, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 was felt in sections of the twin island republic on Sunday afternoon.

The Seismic Research Centre at the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine campus reported that the tremor was felt at 12:35pm (local time) had a depth of 80 kilometres and was located at Latitude: 11.51N and Lon-

gitude: 60.12W. In the twin island republic it was felt 78 km NE of Scarborough, 161 km NE of Arima and 181 km NE of Port of Spain.

There have been no reports of injuries or damages, according to a CMC news article.

Guyana can lead narrative of modern development –– IAST Director

GUYANA can lead the narrative of modern development if it embraces its multiplicity of cultures and manages its resources well, according to Director of the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (IAST), Dr. Suresh Na-

rine.

Addressing a wide audience of government ministers, local and foreign experts and Guyanese at the International Small Business Summit, Narine advanced that developing states in particular have embraced a “monotonic” approach to development,

which was envisaged years ago.

He contended that across most of Latin America and South America, there is a general trend towards urbanization; a removal of the importance of unique and individual cultures and a measurement of success by a very opaque concept, called GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

Development in this context, according to him, encompassed harnessing resources to promote economic growth.

Guyana finds itself in a heightened state of underdevelopment, therefore, if it is only viewed in the context of the accepted monotonic course of development, Narine said.

Due to the world’s monotonic pursuit of development, he said, “Our ability to produce food is dwindling as our amounts of arable acreage exponentially dwindle; and the amount of freshwater resources that we have in the world is being increasingly [used up].”

Dr. Narine, who is also a director of Canadian oil and gas exploration company CGX Inc., posited however that Guyana is in a unique position now.

He advanced these sentiments amidst discussions on the government creating an enabling environment for transformation into a ‘green’ state, particularly in the wake of massive oil finds.

“Where we [Guyanese] find ourselves now is most of our environment is in a pristine state and suddenly… Guyana is at the cusp on being able of capitalise on some growth. It is on the cusp of being able to define how that growth will be and this tiny little country… now has the opportunity to define what development can be,” he explained.

Development in the country has been plagued by a plethora of issues, with racial insecurity being a chief issue, the director noted. To this end, he remarked: “But the very thing that has plagued this country allows a multiplicity of solutions.”

For him, Guyana is a rich nation comprising six different and distinct peoples, from six distant places, which can only contribute to the country’s development.

“How remarkable that the patrimony that we have is not only in the capital heading our way; [and] it is not only the pristine environment that we have managed to maintain, but

it’s this collective approach to defining what we can be which draws from wellsprings all across this globe,” he related.

And with this in mind, the director stressed: “If we don’t, at this moment in time, seize on what that is valued, then the Green State Development Strategy will mean nothing.”

Additionally, with the advent of oil, he noted that the pressures that will emanate from persons coming to these shores to direct the country on the way forward will be unrelenting.

As such, he related, “The opportunity that we have at this cusp in time, is quite remarkable; and I think for a small country that is going to have massive problems absorbing the capital that’s coming our way, to be audacious enough to say we will nucleate “green” growth rather than pursue the profligate trajectories that other oil-producing states have [deserves] an applause.”

Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, Leo Heileman, also lauded Guyana’s ambition to use oil revenues to facilitate it’s transformation into a “green” state.

“Guyana has a unique opportunity. If managed correctly, oil revenues can relieve constraints to economic growth, boost social development and safeguard environment assets of the future. But this is not guaranteed: sound fiscal and monetary policies must guide this effort to ensure benefits reach the entire population and are sustained for the future generations,” Heileman noted.

“This is the direction the world needs to take in order to have a planet that is safe for all of us in the future.”

Both Heileman and Dr Narine acknowledged that the pursuit of green development will not be an easy task, but one that will take very careful stewardship.

As such, Dr. Narine said: “Guyanese, you have six places, six peoples, a remarkable fabric of a society -- use it. Appeal to ingenuity here and make ‘Made-in-Guyana’ solutions.”

Bandit kills Mon Repos man in yard, suspect in custody THE police have arrested a suspected bandit as investigations continue into the murder of Christopher Swamy, 30, a handyman of 161 Mon Repos Pasture, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

THE England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has dismissed allegations of spot-fixing against England players made in a new television documentary.

An investigation by the Al Jazeera network claims to have “uncovered evidence of corruption at the highest levels of international cricket”, including by a “small group” of England players.

“Whilst the limited information we have been given

by Al Jazeera is poorly prepared and lacks clarity and corroboration, it has been properly assessed,” the ECB said.

“Analysis of this by the ECB Integrity Team has cast no doubt on the integrity or behaviour of any England player, current or former.”

Al Jazeera, which says it has obtained “purported recordings” of a match-fixer calling in the fixes to a notorious Indian bookmaker linked to organised crime, claims the corruption “appears to involve two doz-

en fixes in 15 international matches” dating from 2011 and 2012.

The broadcaster says the evidence points to a small group of England players allegedly carrying out spot-fixes in seven matches, Australia players in five matches and Pakistan players in three.

Players from other teams allegedly carried out spotfixes in one match.

The report adds the matches in which fixes were allegedly carried out include England versus India at Lord’s, South Africa versus Australia in Cape Town and several matches during England’s series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

“The ECB takes its responsibilities on anti-corruption and preserving the integrity of cricket very seriously,” the statement added.

“The materials we have been given have been referred to the ICC’s Anti-Corruption unit and we will

continue to work with them, as is the correct procedure for protecting the game.”

Responding to Al Jazeera’s claims, world governing body the ICC said in a statement it was “committed to working to uphold integrity in cricket”.

It added: “As you would expect we will again take the contents of the programme and any allegations it may make seriously and will investigate fully.

“The investigation into these allegations has already commenced and will run alongside a number of other live unrelated investigations.

When considering the claims, we will work with professional independent betting analysts.

“We do welcome the commitment from the broadcaster to share the files with Interpol and, I hope, other law enforcement agencies who can act upon the information and support us in ridding the sport of these criminals.”

The Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL)-organised tournament saw Ariel Speedboat thumping Boots All Stars by nine wickets in a lop-sided affair while Regal Masters held their nerves to defeat archrivals, Mike’s Wellman, by five runs in a cliff-hanger.

Set a modest 126 for victory after limiting Boots All Stars to 125 for nine in their allotted 20 overs, Ariel Speedboat raced to victory in a mere 10 overs with their captain and man-ofthe-match, Wazeer Hussain, slamming a blistering unbeaten 78 off 28 deliveries.

Already with a fine 159 in the first round, Hussain was in a no-nonsense mood, clobbering eight sixes and five fours to all parts of the Everest ground.

Ariel Speedboat pocketed $700,000 and a trophy for winning the Open category while all their players were presented with medals. Regal Masters were awarded $600,000 and a trophy. Both runners-up teams collected $100,000 as well as trophies.

Wazeer Hussain (Ariel Speedboat) was adjudged man-of-the-series in the Open category, “riding” away with a Hero motor cycle while Eric Thomas (Regal Masters) took home a 55-inch flat screen TV for winning the award for the Masters.

The tournament was played in collaboration with the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of the Presidency Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport. Regal Stationery & Computer Centre & Regal Sports have also thrown support behind the tournament.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, who graced the presentation ceremony, called for a unification of the two leagues which have separate international tournaments, pointing out that this will ensure a solid platform for the game in Guyana.

GSCL president Ian John showered praises on the several sponsors and 24 teams which participated in the three-day tournament while also complimenting Bartica for their fine showing in the competition, winning two matches and losing to eventual winners Ariel Speedboat.

Raikkonen victory keeps Hamilton waiting for fifth F1 title

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Britain’s Lewis Hamilton was kept waiting for his fifth Formula One world championship on Sunday after the Mercedes driver finished third in a U.S. Grand Prix won by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.

The victory was the 39-year-old Finn’s first since the Australian Grand Prix of March 2013, a gap of 113 races dating back to when he was racing for Lotus, and 21st of his career.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, Hamilton’s only title rival, spun down to 15th on the opening lap but fought back to finish fourth -- a result that means the championship remains open until Mexico next weekend.

Hamilton now has a 70-point lead over his fourtimes champion rival with 75 points remaining to be won from the last three races.

“I actually thought we would have been able to do better but this is the best we were able to do in the end,” said Hamilton. “We just have to keep working and keep pushing for the next race.

Hosted at the South Dakota circuit, racers of both cars and bikes took advantage of the test to shake down their cars. Group Three driver Stefan Jeffrey contended that the shakedown was a success for him, adding, “Yea, It’s been a year since I’ve been in the car and I think that we’ve been successful.”

Group Two driver Shan Seejattan also commented on

the successful test and tune, adding that “We had some problems with the CV and we discovered and I’m glad that we did.”

Super- stock rider Matthew Vieira, who also used the test to ensure a proper shakedown of his R6, added that “We’ve got some problems with the bike that we have to get fixed in the coming days.”

Sunday’s test also saw the return of the 125cc class and competitor, Nicholas Boodhram, was keen on getting back into the action.

“It’s great to be back on the track, the bike has some

problems due to being down for three years and we are glad for today,” Boodhram added.

The event formed the lead-up to the GMR&SC Ignite race meet scheduled for November 10 and 11.

Ignite will form the basis for the final leg of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC) 2018.

‘Old men’ blocked Wembley sale, says former FA chairman

LONDON (Reuters) - A proposed £600 million sale of Wembley stadium that would have helped fund grass roots football in England collapsed because of “old men” who are “living in the past”, according to former Football Association chairman Greg Dyke.

He blamed opposition from the FA Council for causing Shahid Khan, the owner of Premier League club Fulham and the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team, to withdraw his offer to buy the iconic national stadium.

The Council, which has almost 130 mostly male members, should not have been making the decision anyway, said Dyke, who was FA chairman from

2013 to 2016.

“If I’d been chairman, I would have said it is the (FA) board’s decision,” he told the BBC’s Sportsweek programme on Sunday.

“I don’t think the council is equipped to make this decision — that is what the FA board is for.

“The council is living in the past, as it always has done. If you want to have a step change in grassroots facilities in this country you need this sort of money to be spent.

“It’s bizarre that the old men of the FA Council have

stopped this.”

Khan made his offer in April and the full FA Council was to have voted on whether to accept it on Oct. 24.

However, on Wednesday the FA’s chief executive Martin Glenn said Khan had withdrawn his offer.

“At a recent meeting with Mr Khan he expressed to us that, without stronger support from within the game, his offer is being seen as more divisive than it was anticipated to be and has decided to withdraw his proposal,” Glenn said in a statement.

It was a thrilling and well calculated ride by DeNobrega who initially was in the chasing pack while John, Michael Anthony, Briton ‘Screechie’ John and Hamzah Eastman made up the peloton for the most part of the race.

However, with just about 8 laps left of the 35-lap main event, DeNobrega attacked and eventually broke away from the peloton; never to look back. He won the race in one hour, 41 minutes and 23 seconds to be crowned champion.

Kings, yesterday’s pre-Diwali horse race meet held at the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club was deemed a huge success. While some fans enjoyed the spectacle from the stands, thousands preferred the informal picnic atmosphere.

Racing fans were rarely short of entertainment, and the large crowd was treated to top quality racing during the six-meet race card, especially in the feature event-- H & Lower race.

Four animals sent horse racing fans into a frenzy after an even break saw Silver & Things of the J Cheefoon Racing Stables, winning a comfortable race.

GUWAHATI, India, (CMC) – Left-hander Shimron Hetmyer struck a dashing hundred but Rohit Sharma and captain Virat Kohli answered with high-quality centuries of their own, as India hardly broke a sweat in chasing down a competitive 300-plus total to easily win the opening One-Day International here Sunday.

Facing a tricky target of 323 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, India produced an imperious run chase to get over the line with nearly eight overs remaining and draw first blood in the five-match series, condemning West Indies to an 11th defeat in their last 13 ODIs. They had appeared to put India on the backfoot when Hetmyer’s 106 propelled them up to 322 for eight off their 50 overs – only their fourth 300plus total since the 2015 World Cup – but Rohit slammed a robust, unbeaten 152 while Kohli stroked a breathtaking 140, to brutally snatch the game away from the Windies.

The assault came in the form

of a magnificent record 246-run second wicket stand between Rohit and Kohli, which pulled the innings around after debutant fast bowler Oshane Thomas forced Shikhar Dhawan to play on in the second over for four with the score on 10.

The partnership was the highest for any wicket against West Indies and the seventh highest for India in ODIs overall.

Sent in, West Indies were also helped by opener Kieran Powell’s attacking 51, captain Jason Holder’s 38 while Shai Hope chipped in with 32 and tail-ender Kemar Roach, an unbeaten 26.

The tourists stumbled early on when debutant lefthander Chandrapaul Hemraj under-edged a pull at pacer Mohammed Shami (2-81) onto his stumps in the fifth over, to depart for nine with the score on 19.

However, Kieran Powell and Hope then carried the innings in an enterprising 65-run, second wicket stand, which enabled the Windies recovery.

over – blasting Shami majestically over cover for his final six to post triple figures for the third time in his career and third time this year.

Along the way, he added 74 for the fifth wicket with Rovman Powell (22) before posting another 60 runs for the sixth wicket with Holder who was good for five fours in a 42-ball knock.

Hetmyer eventually fell in the 39th over, caught on the ropes at long on off left-arm spinner Ravi Jadeja but India – after snaring three wickets for 30 runs – were frustrated by tailenders Roach (26 not out) and Devendra Bishoo (22 not out) who put on 44 in an unbroken ninth wicket stand at the end.

H E AV Y r a i n f a l l t h a t swept over the twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago have not only made living conditions unbearable for those living in these parts of the Caribbean region, but also affected the final round of matches of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Super50 tournament and

forced them to be declared as cancelled fixtures.

All the teams which were involved will collect two points each from those matches and with Sunday’s cancelled fixtures, the Group A matches closed off the double round-robin series to determine the semi-finalists.

The T&T Red Force

were scheduled to do battle with the West Indies B team at the Queen’s Park Oval, but that match was also cancelled by the CWI Officials.

The cancelled matches were treated as no-results and all four teams collected two points each.

Rohit faced 117 deliveries and blazed 15 fours and eight fours en route to his 20th one-day hundred while Kohli hardly put a foot wrong in an innings laced with 21 fours and two sixes, as he notched his 36th ODI century.

Kohli was first to his fifty off 33 balls when he slashed off-spinner Ashley Nurse to the backward point boundary in the 11th over, and he raised his hundred off 88 deliveries in the 27th over with a cover-driven four off Roach.

Rohit, meanwhile, notched his first fifty off 51 balls, required only a further 33 deliveries for his hundred before marching to his 150 off 117 balls.

Kohli was in sight of his 150 when ineffective leg-spinner Bishoo – who leaked 72 runs from his 10 overs – drew him from his crease and had him stumped.

By then, however, the Windies were demoralised and the unbroken 70-run, third wicket stand between Rohit and Ambati Rayudu (22 not out) completed their misery.
