GWI fixes water system along Church Street

to repair leaks in the water system, leaks that were reportedly caused

through damage inflicted by heavy-duty container trucks.

The repair works took place at the two intersections of Church Street and the Avenue of the Republic and farther down at the intersection of Church and Main Streets, near Guyana Stores.

Assistant Regional Manager for Georgetown, Eson Pearson, told this newspaper that the damage to the century-old pipelines have contributed to large potholes in the road- ways.

“Normally what happens, is that the vehicles coming out from John Fernandes Ltd-- there are a lot of heavy vehicles passing here--- after a time the vibration wakes up the joints between the mains and they leak; and so we have to pack lead in it to stop it from leaking,” he said, motioning to several workers on site.

Regarding the potholes which have caused citizens to complain, he added: “The leaking will cause potholes, because once vehicles are passing and the water is coming up, after a time it is going to weaken and holes are going to form.”

Pearson said that the GWI is conducting works on the four locations simultaneously, with the hope of completing the job by 18:00hrs on Sunday.

While work was in progress, traffic was diverted from the Avenue of the Republic in line with The New Building Society Ltd, while traffic was able to pass on the other side of the Avenue of the Republic, opposite the Bank of Guyana.

Pearson said that such repairs will have to occur from time to time until it is possible for the entire aged distribution system in Georgetown to be revamped.

“Right now we can’t prevent it, all we can do is repair it,” he said. “There is need for new infrastructure. Some of these lines are over 100 years old; some 75 years old, but from time to time we’re changing lines.”

He also noted that a contractor was on site awaiting completion of the pipe works to re-pave the road for normal vehicular passage.

Cops up pressure on drugs gang – post girl fingered in trafficking of LSD in school

IT is a small paper strip which is coated with the drug which makes the user hallucinate uncontrollably when placed on the tongue.

It is sold for various prices between $500 and $5000 on the East Bank of Essequibo (EBE) and in the city.

This is the information which was uncovered recently after the police ‘busted’ an organised gang which trafficks another illegal substance, ecstasy, targeting school-aged girls of several top secondary schools.

LSD is a hallucinogenic drug which is illegal in Guyana. Its effects can be devastating to the user and when utilised, it leads to altered thoughts, feelings, and awareness of one’s surroundings. In many instances, users see or hear things that do not exist.

Reports are that LSD, which is also known as Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) or ‘acid’, has been making rounds, in schools over the past several months.

An official of the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) contacted this publication on Thursday, one day after a news story was published on the ecstasy gang.

In that report, the presence of LSD here and the use of the post office for its trade and shipment were mentioned.

Reports are that the GPOC is expected to launch its own investigation into the matter.

This newspaper was told that mails arriving in Guyana from overseas are first sorted at the GPOC’s main branch in the city. Those which are addressed to outlying areas outside of Georgetown are then taken to the post offices in those areas and the addressees would uplift their mails.

UNREGISTERED PHARMACY This newspaper was told by a source familiar with the operations of the post office at Tuschen, that Alex, who operates an unregistered pharmacy at Tuschen, would visit the office at specific times to uplift mails and various parcels.

The young man is reportedly well-connected, and as such, he would call a particular ‘postgirl’ at the agency and coordinate when to uplift his ‘mail’. The mails originate from foreign addresses, including Holland

last April, Alex’s movements were noticed by staff.

Suspicions grew after it was discovered that the addresses on the young man’s mails were fictitious, since the lot numbers listed on the mails and that of his home are different. In addition, the mails would bear the name “Alex Anthony” as the receiver, another fictitious piece of information, since it was noted that ‘Anthony’ is not the man’s family name.

This newspaper was informed last week by relatives of the late Vanica Shultz, the Mae’s Secondary School student who committed suicide after overdosing herself with ecstasy in January, shared a relationship with Alex.

Schultz reportedly met the man after using the services of an Internet café which is operated by the man’s

ecstasy pills for the young man, Schultz was forced to sell LSD,her parents told this newspaper last week. They said the man bought a phone for the young lady, unknown to them or her grandmother who was her guardian at the time, and told her she had to ‘work’ to repay him for the phone.

She further disclosed to the relative that Alex would ensure that the LSD is neatly cut into small pieces before it is sold to students at schools on the EBE and the West Bank Demerara by Alex himself.

The relative provided this information to the police in ‘D’ Division in a statement soon after Schultz died. Alex was detained and released on $20,000 bail in connection with her death. It is unclear whether the police acted on the information provided by

the young woman’s relative.

CORROBORATION OF THE GANG’S ACTIVITIES Police uncovered the gang’s operations last weekend after a missing 14-yearold Stewartville Secondary School girl was found dazed and drugged at a ‘hideout’ hotel at Parika.

Following the police operation, in which the girl’s parents played an active role, Alex’s ties to the gang was uncovered via SMS and other chats which were found on a phone of a gang member.

The missing girl’s parents were contacted by Schultz’s parents, since the latter were more than familiar with Alex.

Last week, this newspaper spoke to the 14-yearold girl in the presence of her parents and she detailed the operations of the gang, which is headed by a young man called “Scooby Dew”.

“Scooby Dew” is in police custody after he was fingered in the girl’s disappearance.

The teen said she knew Alex, and the information about his activities corroborated what Schultz’s parents told this publication earlier.

The 14-year-old said that while she did not know much about Schultz, she knew she was a member of the gang, and she recalled that the gang held a meeting on the afternoon of Schultz’s death in January this year, and words of comfort were shared by gang members.

As regards LSD, the teen said the drug came to Alex in postcards. She recalled seeing a ‘puzzle’ which Alex would tear into small pieces and provide it to

several members of the gang, including several schoolgirls, for resale. He managed the LSD sales by gang members, while “Scooby Dew” managed the sale and sourcing of ecstasy.

SCHOOLS INVOLVED The young woman said in addition to Mae’s Secondary and Stewartville Secondary, several other schools, including School of the Nations, Queen’s College, and the Comprehensive School at Tuschen, EBE, are among those where the gang sells the illegal drugs.

A female teacher at the Stewartville Secondary, who reportedly visited the 14-year-old girl last weekend although she was missing from home, is also said to be an active participant in the group’s activities. She is said to be in a relationship with another gang member called “Pandit”, also of the EBE. An Alberttown man, called “Rasta” supplies the gang with ecstasy.

AWAITING WORD FROM THE POLICE Meanwhile, relatives of the 14-year-old girl are awaiting word from the police regarding “Scooby Dew”, who was arrested during a dramatic chain of events last Sunday afternoon at Parika. A medical report indicated that the 14-yearold was sexually molested and the suspect was being questioned in connection with the assault as well as her disappearance.

The teen’s mother told this newspaper on Saturday that she called the police station at Leonora for an

update on the situation, but she noted that the police rank who answered seemed dismissive and unhelpful when she enquired about her daughter’s case. She said the rank informed her that he knew nothing about the case.

She later spoke to a senior police official in the division and he notified her that the police wished to question her daughter some more in connection with the case.

This, she noted, may be the case since it has caused a public outcry. She expressed hope that the police would thoroughly investigate the case, noting that many young women are at risk as a result of the gang’s activities.

‘D’ Division commander, Senior Superintendent Edmond Cooper, told the Guyana Chronicle last week that the matter is being investigated.

EFFECTS OF LSD According to scientific research, the health risks related to frequent LSD use are more mental than physical, since the drug can have long-lasting effects on a person’s brain and emotional state.

The effects include bouts of depression, flashbacks, psychosis and paranoia, and these continue for years after LSD use.

Physical effects of the drug use include increased blood pressure and heart rate, increased body temperature or sweating, dizziness, sleeplessness, numbness or tremors, dilated pupils, loss of appetite, nausea or dry mouth and decreased coordination and weakness.

Two killed in Success accident

A QUIET Sunday morning took a turn for the worst when a 58-year-old vendor, Denise Culley, and 59-yearold Patricia Ellis, lost their lives in an accident at Success, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to Culley’s sister, Avril Pitt, the minibus in which Culley was travelling, toppled after hitting the median on roadway.

The driver of minibus, BTT 4910, was reportedly speeding when he hit the median and suffered a tyre blowout.

“When we get the call that she been in an accident, we couldn’t believe because my son told me that he just saw his aunty outside on the road waiting for a bus… that bus had to be speeding,” said the distraught Pitt.

Pitt said Culley was on her way to ply her trade at Bourda Market when the tragedy occurred.

The news of the woman’s demise came as a shock to the family because the woman celebrated her birthday last week and was jolly all week.

“She is a loss to the family because she used to keep everyone together,” said Culley’s distraught sister.

The other passengers were assisted out of the vehicle by public-spirited citizens and taken to Georgetown Public Hospital, except for Jordon Beaton, who

Those taken to the GPHC were examined by a doctor but Ellis died while receiving treatment. The other passengers, who were taken to the hospital, had lacerations about their bodies.

According to the police, the bus was driven by a 47-year-old resident of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara.

In addition to Cully and Ellis, the other victims included, Jaden Miffatt, seven, a student of Golden Grove Primary School; Laffanna Williams, 22, a police constable of Lot 175 Haslington ECD; June Abel ,60, of Lot 8 Good Hope, ECD; Wayne Blair, 38, of Lot 38 Fernandez Street, Golden Grove, ECD; and Jordon Beaton, 17, of Golden Grove, ECD. The Police enquires found that minibus was proceeding west along the southern lane

of the southern carriageway of the said road, reportedly at a fast rate of speed, when it was alleged by the driver that a blue-colomotor car, blue in colour, overtook him from the left side and collided to his left rear wheel, causing him to lose control and crash into the median.

A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and no trace of alcohol was detected in his system.

He is in custody assisting with the investigation.

RUSAL suspends operations –– executives expected to meet with gov’t officials today in Guyana ACCORDING to U.S. media company Bloomberg, Russian-owned bauxite company RUSAL has suspended its mining unit in Guyana over the current labour conflict which saw the dismissal of over 90 workers for engaging in strike action.

The publication stated that RUSAL, in emailed comments, claimed that workers “declined to work and demanded a pay increase, even though their salaries had been adjusted for forecast inflation at the end of last year.”

This saw the company moving its equipment to a guarded warehouse as part of a decision taken on February 15, 2019, to suspend its mining unit due to a “massive violation of labour discipline.”

However, it is the government and the workers at the Aroaima mining site who believe that RUSAL is in violation of the country’s labour laws.

Workers have complained time and again of wrongful dismissals and suspensions, cuts in benefit and grim working conditions.

Additionqally, even as the company is firing employees, it is looking to hire new employees with executives indicating last week that they were looking to begin a hiring exercise.

Social Protection Minister Amna Ally at a recent meeting with RUSAL executives had lobbied for reinstatement of the fired workers; she made it clear that government’s main interest is to protect the rights of its citizens.

The representatives also met in the presence of Minister responsible for Labour, Keith Scott and Chief Labour Officer (CLO), Charles Ogle.

The CLO has again invited administrators of RUSAL to meet with the Department of Labour and the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers’ Union (GB&GWU) today at 09:00hrs at the office of the CLO. The government continues to push “that in the interest of all stakeholders, normalcy be returned without further delay.”

However, the workers’ patience is wearing thin and the GB&GWU feels dis-

respected by the actions of RUSAL, which they feel is a blatant disregard for human and labour rights.

“Their economic model of addressing their operations here is consistent with the economic battles that my foreparents have fought against,” GB&GWU General Secretary Lincoln Lewis told this newspaper.

“The government will have to look for an alternative. Let them go. We’ve had enough of them over the years… we have had a hundred plus years of mining of bauxite in this country and, let me make it very clear, RUSAL has only been here for 14 years.

If we have lived 88 years without RUSAL, then they will not be the first and they will not be the last.”

FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS Lewis added that the fundamental rights of workers take precedence.

“You can have all the amenities that people can give to you, but if you don’t have rights and freedom, you’re not living,” he said.

One worker on site told the Chronicle that over the past week, the company had moved some if its equipment to the workshop and dismantled them.

He expressed his frustration with the situation, explaining that workers simply want their rights to be respected.

“If they don’t want to come to terms concerning the laws of the country, then if they have to go, they have to go,” he said.

He added: “They have to pay people and go. Somebody else will come. We cannot go into Russia and do as we please. No company cannot go into Russia and treat the Russian people bad; they have to be governed by the laws of the country and that is what we want.”

RUSAL owns 90 per cent of the Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc. (BCGI) and has been operating in Guyana since 2004.

Child burnt by step-father

A six-year-old girl from Bartica, Region Seven, has reportedly received second degree burns from her step-father.

A facebook post made by a relative of the child, alleges that the boyfriend of the little girl’s mother, severely burn the child in the palm of her right hand with a lighter.

The burn was noticed

by the child’s teacher, who reported the matter to the Child Care and Protection Agency (CPA). After an investigation, the CPA handed the matter over to the police and the step-father was subsequently charged.

The matter is currently before the court, and according to a relative, it is being heard in-camera.

While not aiming at complete nationalisation, Trotman said there is need for the government to re-assume control and have greater stake in its natural resources, as this will enable better management of its mining sector.

Some workers blame the former administration for the current situation, even as Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo has indicated that his party intends to meet with the workers to have them air their concerns.

“RUSAL came to this country in Jagdeo’s time when Jagdeo was President. He’s the

person that brought them here. We don’t know the contract that they signed, but they were going against the labour laws all the time,” he said.

“In 2009 they knocked off 57 persons and Jagdeo did nothing. He did nothing. The Minister of Labour at that time was Manzoor Nadir, he did nothing. Then when Ramotar took office the minister at that time was Nanda Gopaul, he did nothing. So we get those kind of disrespect from the Russians for too long.”

Despite the rising tension, Social Protection Minister Amna Ally will be present at the meeting today and will continue deliberations on the matter.

The PPP and the democratic process THE People’s Progressive Party’s continued wild accusations against the coalition government, ranging from claims of mismanagement to being in violation of the constitution, call into question the role of the opposition in the democratic process.

Guyana has over the years been a victim of both government over-reach and opposition overzealousness. Some may argue, with much justification, that the two outcomes are inter-related. Suffice to say that the country’s democratic credentials have been called into question to the point where some analysts have described us as authoritarian—at least at different points in our post-colonial journey.

In fact, Professor Clive Thomas who in the 1980s wrote the seminal book, “The Rise of the Authoritarian State in the Periphery,” was moved in the not-so-distant past to describe Guyana as a “Criminalised State.” This perception of the state of our democracy may have played a pivotal role in the historic change of government in 2015. Just over three years into the life of the new government, the opposition PPP has consistently attempted to call into question the democratic intent of those in charge of managing the state.

Such charges are a norm in Guyanese and Caribbean opposition praxis. In many

cases, these opposition parties were themselves recent perpetrators of democratic abuse—a case of “the pot calling the kettle black.”

The simple truth is that the now opposition PPP presided over one of the most undemocratic governments in the modern history of the Anglophone Caribbean. From the descent into a culture of extra-judicial killings to institutional assaults on the media, to the merging of the party with the state and government to the wholesale transfer of state assets into private hands, that government took Guyana close to the edge of systemic dysfunction.

But if one were unfamiliar with Guyanese politics, one would have much difficulty associating those ills with the now opposition party. But a close observation of its behaviour would give some insight into the way it governed. In other words, there has not been much change in the general approach of the PPP to politics and society, since it lost the seat of power. Its politics of domination, political spite, ethno-racial fear-mongering and manifest destiny are as active now as they were while the party was in power.

The argument here is that the PPP, in opposition, is undermining democracy as much as when it held power. Understandably, the

burden is on government to uphold the democratic principles of governance. But opposition parties are just as responsible for that outcome. Although the day-to-day exercise of power is disproportionately weighted in favour of governments, the opposition does have strategic instruments of democratic check on governments. So those parties could in some instances hold the political process to ransom.

It is our considered opinion that this is exactly what the PPP has been doing. Just as it used the cover of democracy to govern as an authoritarian government, it is now using the cover of opposition oversight to undermine democracy. The tactic is simple, but subtle—frustrate the government with the hope that in the interest of discharging its constitutional duties it acts in ways that the opposition can deem to be undemocratic. It is a case of the PPP, in Bob Marley’s words, “playing smart and not being clever.”

Our Westminster system assumes that at some levels the opposition is part of government and as such, has certain fundamental obligations to make the system work effectively. The PPP has deliberately used these obligations as barriers to democratic advance. The party’s attitude to selection of the GECOM Chair comes to mind—the opposition leader utilised

his major role in the process to hurt and eventually dismantle the democratic spirit of the Carter Formula. The same approach was put to work on the sugar issue and the appointment of top officers to the judicial branch. They constantly vulgarised the National Assembly until they were able to get a government MP to vote with it on a no-confidence motion which is currently being challenged in the courts.

The truth of the matter is that, despite investable errors, this government cannot be charged with presiding over an authoritarian state. In fact, one of its crowning achievements is precisely its sterling record in the areas of human rights and the upholding of civil liberties. Such an assessment cannot be reasonably refuted by even government detractors. So, the PPP’s antics are uncalled for—a case of creating a fictionalised dictatorship and seeking to normalise it.

It is therefore the responsibility of fair-minded social and political forces to stand in the way of this travesty. There must be a distinction between opposition and civil society oversight on the one hand and wilful destabilisation of the process.

There must always be a place for opposition critique, but such critique must be grounded in reason and commitment to democratic and moral principles.

Green revolution must be blueprint for ‘Blue Economy’

WITHIN a few months, in October 2019, Guyana will be observing the 30th anniversary of a magnificent gift of nature -- The Iwokrama International Rainforest Conservation Project.

This natural gem, a portion of our giant emerald-green rain forest, was brilliantly conceptualised and presented to the world at the 11th Meeting of the Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Nations, in the great city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in October 1989 by former President Hugh Desmond Hoyte. According to the Langkawi Declaration on the Environment, which was issued at the end of the summit on October 21, 1989, “The main environmental problems facing the world are the ‘greenhouse effect,’ (which may lead to severe climatic changes that could include floods, drought and rising sea levels); the depletion of the ozone layer; acid rain; marine pollution; land

degradation and the extinction of numerous animal and plant species. Some developing countries also face distinct environmental problems arising from poverty and population pressures. In addition, some islands and low-lying areas of other countries are threatened by the prospect of rising sea levels.”

At that crucial meeting, President Desmond Hoyte in recognising the importance and urgency of ‘Climate change,’ offered to the world, on behalf of the people of Guyana, “to set aside part of Guyana’s rainforest for study under Commonwealth auspices, for developing and demonstrating methods of sustainable management of tropical rainforest and conserving biological diversity” (Commonwealth Secretariat, London UK).

This gift of approximately 1,000,000 (one million) acres of pristine rainforest, has cemented Guyana’s role as a global environmental activist and leader in sustainable development. It was a gift that was given long before the landmark UN Conference

on the Environment and development also known as, ‘The Earth Summit,’ which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 1992.

It was given at a time when it was not so popular—politically-- to do, nor when Guyana, from an economic standpoint,could really have afforded to do so. There were many critics who felt it was a giveaway of our natural resources, causing future generations of Guyanese to be robbed of their national patrimony. Today, as Guyana gears up to become a major oil-producing nation, history is being repeated with many of those same short-sighted critics making the same spurious claims that the government would cause Guyanese to be robbed of their natural resources. They argue that the multi-national companies, particularly Exxon Mobil, are shortchanging us with agreements that are not favourable to Guyanese. They criticise the government’s preparedness and expertise in oil and gas, despite expert advice on international best practices from around

the world, including the prestigious Chatham House of London. They ignore all the precautions being undertaken by the government to prevent the Dutch disease and Resource curse. They are transfixed and salivating as Guyana is about to harvest one of the world’s biggest oil and gas reserves that will redound to the benefit of all Guyanese and swiftly transform Guyana into the Malaysia of the Caribbean. There is a unique link between that magnanimous act by Guyana 30 years ago in Malaysia and what is occurring in Guyana today. Iwokrama was a seed that was planted. It was a sacrificial giving. The foundation was laid for the prosperity of Guyana with the planting of that emerald-green gift to the world. In a sense, Iwokrama is the genesis of the Green State Development Strategy (GSDS) being implemented by the APNU+AFC coalition government, which will establish Guyana as a ‘Green’ State.

Guyana is about to reap a bountiful harvest from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

The advent of oil and gas has imposed upon Guyana another concept of development known as the ‘Blue Economy.’ What is the ‘blue economy’? According to the Commonwealth Secretariat, “The ‘Blue Economy’ is a concept which encourages better stewardship of our ocean or ‘blue’ resources.

It underpins the thinking behind the Commonwealth Blue Charter, highlighting, in particular, close linkages between the ocean, climate change, and the well-being of the people of the Commonwealth. At its heart, it reaffirms the values of the Commonwealth, including equity and public participation in marine and coastal decision-making. It supports all of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG14 ‘life below water,’ and recognises that this will require ambitious, coordinated actions to sustainably manage, protect and preserve our ocean now, for the sake of present and future generations.” In short, it has to do with the wealth of the ocean and the health of the ocean.

For Guyana, the ‘green’ revolution must be the blueprint for the ‘Blue Economy.’

Guyana must embrace the ‘Blue Economy’ as the flipside of the ‘Green Economy,’ with the ‘Green Economy’ being terrestrial-based and the ‘Blue Economy’ being aquatic-based.

The concept of the ‘Blue Economy’ may strike many as being strange, since the color blue has never been associated with Guyana. It is not even in our flag! Blue waters and white sandy beaches have never been a feature of our coastline like the rest of the Caribbean. afar offshore, over 100 miles from our coast where no one could ‘bad-eye’ it! So, all along we have had beautiful aquamarine waters which remain unspoilt and pristine just like our emerald-green rainforest. It contains one of the world’s richest reserves of oil and gas which we are about to harvest. It is therefore the ‘Blue Economy’ that will bring lasting prosperity to all Guyanese, which President David Granger refers to as ‘the good life.’

With the Green State Development Strategy (GSDS-2040), Guyana is well on its way to becoming the world’s first ‘Green’ State with a ‘Blue Economy.’ All the indications are there; the establishment of the Sovereign Wealth Fund, educational initiatives such as Masters, Bachelors and Associate degree programmes in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Guyana; the establishment of the Department of Energy; the appointment of technical experts and overall general capacity-building activities.

Every patriotic Guyanese should support the coalition government as it establishes the world’s first ‘Green’ State with a ‘Blue Economy’ under the leadership of President David Granger. All stakeholders across the public and private sectors, as well as civil society organisations should call on Opposition Leader Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo to stop the hostility and to stop seeing only ‘Red.’ If he is truly a Champion of the Earth, Mr Jagdeo will cease stirring up strife in the society and meet with President Granger ASAP to fulfil his constitutional duties and use his ‘Environmental Laureate’ to promote Guyana’s version of a ‘Green’ New Deal with President Granger, thereby showcasing Guyana’s true colours to the world.

Jagdeo flayed for ‘crass’ display

–– PM, Ramkarran urge maturity FORMER PPP executive and former Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran, has criticised Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo’s announcement that he will turn down a meeting on election matters with President David Granger on March 6.

Jagdeo last Thurs day at his weekly press briefing, cited two letters which were sent to Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Chairman by the President, saying they were doctored, and as such, he will ignore the President’s invitation.

by Jagdeo as malicious, deceitful and bewildering; Ramkarran believes the former President was out of line. “… I have always be-

lieved that doors should never be closed in politics. The second letter, not having expressly contradicted the first, Mr. Jagdeo should have assumed that its contents remain valid and, at the meeting, request an explanation from the President as to why the government-nominated members of the commission are ignoring his request,” Ramkarran contended.

He added that under the current circumstance, the opposition can only succeed with “patience and cool tempers,” which is little of what Jagdeo demonstrated last Thursday.

Suggesting another path he could have taken, Ramkarran asserted: “Mr. Jagdeo could have informed the public of his intention and then raise the issue of a date for elections at the meeting. If his effort

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo in his column ‘My Turn’, lambasted the opposition leader for his haste to accuse the President of

The opposition leader was repeatedly reasoned to by members of the press until he read the letters once more and came to the realisation, conceding: “Yea, yea, ok.”

PATHETIC “As the independent media bludgeoned him after he had accused President Granger of committing a fraud, he proceeded to cynically name journalists such as Julia Johnson and Gordon Moseley, the latter having been banned from presidential media conferences under the former regime,” Nagamootoo recounted.

“As I watched his pathetic performance, I realised that the silly season for scandals has returned, and the image of the foulmouthed politician came back from a period when Jagdeo himself had invent-

ed ‘cuss-down politics’.”

Even after coming to the realisation that the letters were separate, Jagdeo pressed further, questioned, “So if there is two separate letters, which one is the one we will use?”

Nagamootoo added: “It is clear that the former President is momentarily disoriented by charges against him of misuse of state resources and the many counts of fraud and sleaze against several of his ministers. But this is no time to play the silly game of catch- up by accusing the sitting President with fraudulent conduct.”

Guyana Chronicle’s Sunday editorial titled “Civility in Public Office”, also weighed in on Jagdeo's behaviour.

“Last Thursday’s crass behaviour by leader of the opposition (LOO) accusing the government of fraudulent behaviour and also attacking the President personally, referring to his religion, was the most vulgar we have seen from this former president in recent times,” the edito-

The editorial went on to examine how such behaviours demonstrated by a leader could impact the behaviour of youths and children, if such actions were to be depicted as the new norm.

Baby with Downs Syndrome to get help

FIVE-MONTH-OLD Jahziah McKenzie, who was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome and Atrioventricular (AV) Canal Defect (a hole in her heart), will be able access treatment soon.

According to the Saving Hands Emergency Aid (SHEA) Foundation, all aspects of the baby’s treatment were coordinated, but another opportunity presented itself outside of the foundation.

“The family has decided to accept the other opportunity...we wish Jahziah all the best and we pray that her treatment journey is safe and successful,” said SHEA. SHEA will no longer be accepting donations on the baby’s behalf, so persons are asked to directly contribute to McKenzie’s mother, Ephah’s fund. Funds already raised through SHEA will be transferred to the new treatment plan. Jahziah’s case is now closed.

Since the baby was born, her mother, Ephah, has been her sole caregiver. Ephah, who is a single mother of two other girls, reached out to SHEA with the plea for help to save her baby’s life.

“Ephah explained that she has faced incredible difficulties in her quest for treatment for little Jahziah. She used her savings to pay for her daughter to be seen and diagnosed at the Balwant Singh Hospital, where an echo-cardiogram test was done; however, the hospital could not offer treatment due to the lack of equipment needed for paediatric heart surgery,” said the organisation.

The distraught mother had expressed further frustration in not being able to secure the required treatment at the GPHC; she noted that she was told that the results of the echo test which was done at Balwant Singh Hospital could not be used at GPHC. That meant that she would need to have

another test done.

Her struggle and frustration continued as she could not get an appointment to have the echo test redone at GPHC, despite numerous trips to the clinic.

“Luckily, a few days ago, with the help of the Ministry of Public Health, she was able to get an appointment and baby Jahziah had her echo test done on February 15,” said the organisation. She was advised to go to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) for further assistance.

'Mash' spirit takes hold of Lindeners –– in explosion of colour, music and celebration

By Vanessa Braithwaite THE spirit of Mashramani came alive on Sunday in the mining town of Linden as hundreds of spectators emerged from every nook and cranny, to get a glimpse of the floats which were accompanied by the revelers, who feted through the streets of Linden, gyrating provocatively to the strains of soca music that blasted from the boom boxes of the party trucks.

Those trucks were packed to capacity, with party lovers and revellers.

It was indeed an explosion of iridescent colours, soca music and fete, as the revelers donned colourful and creative costumes, portraying the true spirit of the occasion.

Making a special appearance was Minister of State Joseph Harmon; Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally; Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueira and Deputy Regional Executive Officer (DREO) Maylene Stephens.

Stephens was a part of the Region 10, Regional Democratic Council (RDC) group which consisted of mostly youths.

Othersparticipating were the Department of Culture Youth and Sport, the Linden Technical Institute (LTI), Float and the Wave and 592 party trucks. The LTI’s giant robot float, made by the students themselves, and which was an illustration of how waste material can be transformed into beautiful artistry, was the centre of attraction.

The Mashramani procession started from Republic Avenue, Mackenzie and ended at the Bayroc Community Centre Ground, Wismar. Many onlookers, too, were decked out in costumes and patriotic gear, all in the spirit of the occasion,which is one of Guyana’s most-celebrated national holidays.

At Bayroc, the atmosphere was transformed into a real party arena, as it looked as if the Lindeners were continuing what

was left off from Saturday night’s J’Ouvert. That `gig’ also attracted thousands of people.

While the Lindeners deemed the Mashramani celebrations as enjoyable, many posited that there is much room for improvement.

“It is better than last year, but I still feel it could have been much better, because is about three floats alone and to me it is mostly about party. We need to remember what Mash is about, it is about floats and not about wining and going on, I think it could have been much better,” one onlooker said.

“I think is about the organising and the support as well, we are not getting the support as before, and to know Mash started in Linden. Mash originated in Linden, we should be getting one of the biggest Mash, I think more government ministries and so, need to support us, bring the same floats up here, so all who didn’t get to go down on the 23rd, can see them up here,” Simone Peters, another onlooker said.

Mashramani has its genesis in Linden with the first float parade being held in 1966, as a celebration of Guyana gaining its Independence. It was organised by the Jaycees Social Group. The carnival celebration was patterned later by other towns before becoming a national event, and adopting the name Mashramani.

It has been customary for Linden to host its Mashramani float parade the Sunday after Republic Day. This had been done consecutively since 2006. This year’s Mashramani is held under the theme, “Celebrating 49, with Victory in mind.”

The Region 10 Commemorative Committee is mulling the return of the National Mashramani Float Parade to Linden in 2020, on the 50th anniversary of Guyana turning a Republic.

OVER the preceding decades, several Acts have been passed in Parliament with the purpose of informing adults of their rights, while protecting the children of Guyana in various ways. law, the more we can share with others. For instance, did you know that under the Sexual Offences Act, an indecent assault carries a High Court conviction of up to 10 years imprisonment? 7) C: When a man presumes paternity, he recognises a child as his own: he does not have to be the biological father of the child or married to the child’s mother.

8) ALL answers are correct: Nowadays, due to DNA testing,, a man can easily determine whether or not he is the father of a child. Modern hotel opens at Mon Repos

THE Caribbean Inn Hotel Restaurant and Bar opened its doors on Saturday at Mon Repos, East Coast of Demerara, as it seeks to position itself at a time when Guyana will soon become an oil-and-gas-producing nation.

The new establishment was opened by the Rambrich family.

Speaking at the opening, Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) President Mitra Ramkumar lauded the investment, pointing out that there is great demand for quality service in Guyana.

“We want to develop an industry that is sustainable and does not have a finite life; and will live on for generations to come,”

said Ramkumar.

He also said destination Guyana remains welcoming, offers quality service and persons coming to Guyana can experience her rich culture.

Ramkumar said this year, the tourism industry aims to establish a hospitality institute to build human-resource capacity to serve the rapidly expanding local industry.

Meanwhile, in brief remarks, former President Donald Ramotar noted that Guyana has a fantastic tourism product.

He said since the hotel is outside of Georgetown, it will significantly enhance the profile of the community, Mon Repos.

were neatly adorned in party colours.

They were joined by representatives of the Social Cohesion Ministry officials, the Guyana Police Force and its youth arm, the Region Six administration, Homeline Furnishing, the University of Guyana and a host of others.

Berbicians collectively laud the celebration, which apart from the entertainment and togetherness was also a good business day for small vendors.

Linden Johnson Centre to be rebuilt

–– Minister Harmon MINISTER of State Joseph Harmon on Sunday promised residents of Victory Valley, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) that the Linden Johnson Community Centre, which was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin over the weekend, will be rebuilt by government in the coming months.

During a visit to the community, Minister Harmon said the community centre is important not only to the young people in the village, but to President David Granger as it was he [President Granger] who commissioned it in April, 2018.

The space, the minister said, represents a refuge, a place of learning, growth and development for the youth.

“We have to start cleaning up this place.

From today or tomorrow, we are going to start cleaning it up, because I have already told Member of Parliament Mr. Jermaine Figuiera that we will rebuild it bigger and better than how it was. This is an important community for us and the President was here himself; I was here to hand over equipment and sports gear some time ago, so I know what has been lost. The police and fire [service] will do their investigations, but irrespective of what the outcome is, we have to move on; so I am going to make a commitment to ensure that some of the requirements for rebuilding that we can start getting it from next week.

Don’t be sad and down, we are going to rebuild,” Minister Harmon assured the residents.

“I need to see a plan that will show me bigger and better than this, because when you build back, you don’t build back the same way. We need a plan and I want the community to have a part in that plan and we will cost it and start from next week. We shouldn’t let people believe that they can stop the progress we are making. This is just a spoke in the wheel but no one is going to stop our progress. We are going to come together and do this. I want this community to have a say,” he stated.

The Community Centre housed an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub, which assisted the youth from various communities including Victory Valley, Blueberry Hill, Silver City and Wismar Housing Scheme to complete assignments and do research.

With residents concerned about the impact this will have on the students, Minister Harmon said that he will engage the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) E-Government Unit to determine if the connection can be located temporarily until the new building is completed.

Meanwhile, Keith Ferreira, a resident of Victory Valley, said he is pleased that Minister Harmon visited the community and welcomed his announcements.

“We are so pleased and we welcome what you have just said. I can say that the youths of this community especially would appreciate that this centre will be rebuilt, because it provides so much for them,” he said. (Ministry of the Presidency)

Hundreds benefit from cancer awareness outreach

OVER 200 Lindeners benefitted from health services and information when the Ministry of Public Health staged a Cancer Awareness Concert in the mining town of Linden.

On Saturday, at noon, the Cancer Awareness Concert which aimed to raise awareness of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination, kicked off with a health fair at the Linden Mackenzie Market Square The event also focused on bringing awareness to Breast, Prostate and Cervical Cancer.

The HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI), and according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus has the potential to develop genital warts and cancer, in particular cervical cancer, among women.

Medical officer attached to the Adolescents Health Unit of the Ministry of Public Health, Faqueeda WatsonJones, said it was observed that Guyana’s cancer rate is high with the types related to the HPV being the most outstanding ones, such as cervical cancer.

However, HPV can be avoided by getting a HPV vaccine.

Jones noted that both boys and girls between the

ages of nine to 16 are currently being vaccinated, at all health facilities in Guyana.

Guyana is one of five Caribbean countries that offer free HPV vaccines.

She added: “The vaccine is free of cost; there is no significant side effect. The only side effects that you have are, like any typical vaccine we would have received in our life time - Pain, swelling and redness.”

Delivering the feature remarks at the event, on behalf of Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Karen Campbell noted, that many types of cancer can be prevented either through lifestyle choices or vaccination, and “so everyone has a significant role to play in partnering with health workers and God, to either prevent cancers or other chronic diseases.”

Campbell added: “We must ensure that we and our children are healthy, so we can live long lives to reap the fruit of our labour….We can protect ourselves and loved ones by eating well, eating fruits and vegetables, daily drink six to eight glasses of water, avoiding sugary drinks and sodas and trans-fat, exercise regularly, avoid exposure to tobacco and avoid excessive use of alcohol.”

She also encouraged per-

sons to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated to protect them from “some diseases that are life threatening and preventable”.

Cellphones–how private are they ?

IT was after having dinner with some friends at OMG on Sheriff Street that I first became suspicious.

We had settled into our seats, phones were placed on the table (as usual) and a waitress promptly attended to our table, when I noticed one of my friends struggling to read the menu without glasses. I asked, “Why aren’t you wearing glasses? She replied, “On my salary, I’m still trying to save up enough. Have you seen the prices for glasses now?” I nodded in agreement and told her to check online. I even told her to check local opticians to save on her purchase. Another friend chimed in saying, “Speaking about eyeglasses, I need to replace my suspension struts because their beginning to knock.” Another friend said he should replace the entire car since the entire body was knocking and jiggly.

It was the usual banter between friends but one which, in fact, turned into something altogether more unsettling, making me think long and hard about what constitutes our privacy.

The next day, I used my cell phone to scroll through my Yahoo account and noticed adverts for LASIK laser eye surgery and a selection of spectacles. When I booted up my

desktop computer, lo and behold, on the side of the screen popped up advertisements for more glasses, vehicle shocks and suspension parts…

Was this a coincidence? Is it possible that our phones are somehow eavesdropping on our conversations – and that key phrases are being logged and used to send us targeted adverts? The implications, if true, are chilling. We are obsessed with our cellphones. We take them to our most personal spaces including our bedrooms, dinner tables, meetings, vehicles and bathrooms. It stands to reason that they are privy to our most intimate of conversations.

But what I discovered over several days of checks and investigations highlighted a frightening new chapter in our relationship with these devices. It is obvious that the microphones on our phones are indeed listening to our everyday lives.

We do not even have to be using our phones to make a call for them to eavesdrop.

Unless the microphone is disabled, they appear to be able to pick up words and phrases and translate them into related adverts, which then appear in apps such as Instagram and Facebook, as well as on your laptop and desktop computers.

After enquiries, I was told that Facebook, which owns Instagram and WhatsApp, “completely denies using microphones to eavesdrop on conversations or to tailor adverts”. According to information disclosed during a recent United States Senate hearing over privacy and information sharing concerns, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, for example, insist the company only shows adverts based on user’s interests and information voluntarily uploaded….Oh really? I think not.

I carry my Samsung S8, like most persons, at all times except when bathing. It is almost always switched on and close enough to me for it to be able to hear any conversations if the speaker is activated.

It was just a few weeks ago that my sister reminded me via text and later a follow-up call, that Marianne’s School had their first blood drive for the year. The next day, I woke up to advertisements from medical centres offering free blood tests etc.

Later that day, I spoke with Neilon Dais of the television programme ‘Car Culture’.

Within an hour of that conversation, advertisements popped up on my desk top computer for car detailing products!

To be absolutely sure that my cellphone was eavesdropping, I left it on my desk as

I spoke aloud about taking a holiday somewhere in the Caribbean. The following day, my desktop was full of holiday offers, including websites for cheap fares and low-end bed and breakfast accommodations (I’m frugal like that).

According to Whatsapp (owned by Facebook) messages are encrypted and even they can’t tell you what you’ve been sending.

I did some research and discovered that an American woman, in 2017, Jen Lewis, posted a picture of herself on Twitter wearing a pink shirt and blue jeans. She was subsequently targeted on Facebook by a lingerie company, which sent her an ad of a model wearing an almost identical outfit. She wrote in a post to her page: ‘Uh, Facebook just served me a bra ad where a woman is wearing the outfit that I’m currently wearing.’ It went viral, with 21,400 ‘likes’ from people around the world. Facebook insisted it was coincidence, but thousands of people were unconvinced, suggesting that the woman’s phone or laptop camera was targeted with image-recognition software.

South Africa exposes Guyana to gold-recovery technology

SOUTH Africa is more than willing to expose Guyanese artisanal miners to IGoli – a mercury-free technology used to recover gold, Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources of the Republic of South Africa, Godfrey Oliphant, said on Wednesday.

According to MINTEK – South Africa’s National Mineral Research Organisation, IGoli is a simple, safe, and highly effective method of gold extraction that produces an extremely pure product. The process entails leaching the gold concentrate with diluted hydrochloric acid and bleach. Once the solids are filtered, the gold is precipitated out with sodium metabisulphate.

During a joint press conference with Guyana’s Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman at the Marriott Hotel, Minister Oliphant said for approximately 20 years, South Africa has moved away from the utilisation of mercury, and now engages in “domestic leaching” in the gold mining sector.

He said IGoli, which was developed by MINTEK to make gold extraction more efficient and environmentally responsible, is very simple and cost effective.

“Actually, it is very cheap,” Minister Oliphant said while emphasising that the chemicals used, such as bleach, does not cause harm to the environment and the human body, as is the case of mercury.

According to him, small and medium scale miners can easily adapt to this process and South Africa is committed to sharing it.

“Either we send some of our officials to come and work with miners here to show them how to do this… or we take some of the miners to South Africa,” the deputy minister of mineral resources said. During an engagement with the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA), the Guyana Women Miners Organisation (GWMO) and the National Mining Syndicate prior to the press conference, Minister Oliphant and his South African delegation promoted the use of IGoli.

The mercury-free technology has been demonstrated to small-scale miners in Mozambique, Peru, and to government officials from Tanzania.

“The intellectual property is freely passed on because we feel that the removal of mercury from artisanal mining worldwide is important to the health of our earth,” MINTEK said.

Guyana signed on to the United Nation’s Minamata Convention on Mercury in 2013 and ratified the convention in 2014. Since then it has been taking steps to promote the use of mercury-free technology in the gold mining industry.

Conservation International Guyana (CI-Guyana) is currently collaborating with the Global Environment Facility

Additionally, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), with funding from the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM), is working with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commissions (GGMC) to align the Minamata Convention. The GYD$804M (€3.4 million) project will see the demonstration of mercury-free extraction models and sharing of mercury data on a regional level.

DECLARATION OF INTENT In the case of South Africa, the training of Guyanese miners to carry out the mercury-free IGoli process would likely follow the signing of a Declaration of Intent covering five critical areas – training and capacity building, mining regulations, value added, mapping and surveying, and environmental protection in the mining industry.

Initially, both Minister Trotman and Minister Oliphant had expressed a desire to sign off on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the end of the five-day visit by the South African Delegation, but on Wednesday, Minister Trotman said a Declaration of Intent would be signed instead at the end of the five-day visit.

“I think that both ministers, as eager as we are, recognise that we do have to have the blessings of our governments collectively. So we have determined that we will sign a Declaration of Intent rather than a MoU, because we would then go to our respective principals for confirmation,” Minister Trotman explained.

That Declaration of Intent is expected to be signed on Friday, the same day that the South African Delegation will meet with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Dr. Ivelaw Griffith, to discuss possible areas of partnership. The minister noted too that the document will also set the foundation for technical officers from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Guyana Gold Board to be trained on modern technologies of mining employed in South Africa.

“Secondly, we will be looking at ways in which we can strengthen our regulatory framework; what best practices we can import from South Africa into Guyana, and vice versa. Maybe there are a few practices that we have that we can share with South Africa so far as regulation of mining and natural resources are concerned,” Minister Trotman said.

With Guyana exporting the majority of its minerals in their “raw” state, the enhanced partnership between the South American country and South Africa could see a transfer of knowledge, skills and financial resources that would see the former adding value to its commodities on a much larger scale.

“We are producers of gold and diamond but we ship them out to be returned as jewellery to us and undoubtedly, the time has come for us to look further,” Minister Trotman said while admitting that Guyana needs help in building its value-added capabilities.

He noted that in 2018, a South African firm conducted a feasibility study on the establishment of a national gold refinery, but the country has also been receiving offers from other parts of the world.

“We do have a few offers, not just from

South Africa but Dubai, India and the US, so it is a step Guyana intends to take so we can do our own gold refining,” Minister Trotman told reporters.

While the Guyana Government, at this stage has not decided on an investor, Minister Trotman said the country can borrow the technologies used in South Africa to refine their minerals – in this case, gold.

Additionally, the Natural Resources Ministry will be turning to the South African Mineral Resources Department for assistance in mapping and surveying the country’s mineral wealth. “We must know exactly what we have, where and in what quantities, and South Africa has shown willingness to assist us there,” the natural resources minister said.

The final area of partnership under the pending Declaration of Intent, which is expected to set the foundation for the MoU, would be environmental protection. Both Minister Trotman and Minister Oliphant have agreed that the environment could be protected through sustainable and environmentally-friendly mining activities.

“Mining is the future and as we improve our technologies, as we talk about the fourth industrial revolution and the ‘green’ economy, it is important that we take all these things into account, especially the human capital in mining as we go forward,” the South African minister said.

Formally, engaged in mining for well over 150 years, South Africa’s mining industry accounts for eight per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It has approximately 1,700 mines and quarries producing 53 commodities.

Approximately 460,000 people are employed in the mining industry.

Women in Business Expo deemed inspiring

AS the two-day Women in Business Expo wrapped up on Sunday evening at the Pegasus Hotel, with the second part of the “Inspire You” seminar, attendees have deemed the entire event, ‘inspiring.’

When the Guyana Chronicle spoke with several persons who were enjoying the exhibits, and making full use of the sales, all of them expressed similar sentiments.

One woman said that she came out on both days and she wished there was a third. “I really enjoyed this exhibition and I am not only here for the sales, but I was here for inspiration and I definitely received it,” she said.

She added: “I always wanted to start my own small business, but I wasn’t sure what to do. But I have gotten so many ideas today, that I think it might be a challenge now to pick one.”

A 15-year-old student, Anastacia Liverpool, said that she was in awe at the level of creativity and she was inspired as a young woman.

“The creativity level was off the chart. As a business student it really inspired me and opened my mind towards a lot of things; and I hope they do this event every year, so that other young persons like myself can have this opportunity to feel the level of inspiration I am feeling right now,” Liverpool said.

Another young woman said that the expo made her aware of a lot of talented and creative people that Guyana has. In fact, she was edified on how persons use a lot of ‘queer’ things, and turn them into magnificent pieces from which they gain incomes.

Danielle John, another committee member, said that this year they added a second “Inspire You” seminar to cater for persons who could not have made it to the first.

She explained that the seminar is where they have women with successful businesses, sharing their story, with the hope of inspiring someone who hears it.

“Everybody has a story to tell, and you can find yourself connecting with someone else’s story. You can say to yourself, ‘if they can go through it and make

it out, then I can do it too.’

So the seminar is to have that effect on people. To inspire them,” John said.

In addition to the seminar, John said that the exhibitors were all satisfied with success of the expo.

This year she said, saw a total of 46 exhibitors showcasing their businesses, and each of them had got a sale during the expo, since a lot of patrons came out to show support.

John said that she believes the expo was a really great initiative from Sonia Noel and it has created many opportunities, especially for small businesses.

“There are a lot of opportunities exposed to, especially for small businesses. When these businesses are a part of the expo, because you don’t know what type of clients you might meet, probably one who can take your business regionally, or even internationally…

We have a lot of talent here, and lot of excellent products. This year was really nice,” John expressed.

ly. She said: “As a medical doctor, I want to encourage our brothers and sisters that it is important that we take our health seriously.

If you realise that you are not getting better with any sign or symptoms you present with, please visit your nearest health centre or the nearest hospital because when you actually decide to go it might be too late, especially when it comes to cancer because cancer is prevalent.”

“For the women, please look at your breast, accept your breast and enjoy looking at it, so you would know what is normal from when something abnormal happens you can be able to pick it up. Know what is happening to your body, love your body, understand your body and respect your body,” Jones encouraged.

A good friend at the one of the local telephone companies informed me that, “Every time you download an app and give it permission to access personal information, whether it be photographs, contacts or microphone, you will be targeted.” He explained that there is no such thing as a free app and because most persons click yes without reading all of the “fine print”, we technically give permission so it is not illegal. This “permission”, he added, is given because the microphones on most people’s phones are always left on. The phones are pre-programmed to listen for ‘trigger’ phrases which activate personal assistant apps such as Siri, Bigsby or Alexa.

The warnings about other apps using the same technology without the phone owner’s knowledge are now being highlighted in the media. I discovered that multiple apps sometimes listen in the background all the time, with each being triggered by keywords we hardly bother to read. This information (encrypted, yeah right!) is then passed on to the relevant companies who target you with advertisements. It is thought that app developers create a list of keywords relating to its advertisers or their products.

Apparently, cell phone microphones send conversations through transcription software, and it instantly turns it from speech to text. If key words or phrases are present, the app triggers adverts to be sent to users. It is believed that companies such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have all developed algorithms that allow this process to work effectively. If you’re like myself and not using social media, well there is more than one way to skin a cat! Somehow the tech companies are able to tap into your IP address which every computer system is encoded as an identifier and target you, once you switch on.

But if our private lives are being used for advertising, what else is being monitored?

My telecommunications source warned that we should think more about what we download on phones and remember that nothing is free. He noted, “There are just different ways of paying.”

Cellphones are not the only devices with microphones or built-in cameras. Our other ‘smart’ household devices – designed to make modern life more efficient – may have a darker side, too.

From Smart TVs and Alexa assistants to baby monitors, fridges and smart meters, reports have shown that such gadgets can record people without their permission.

Where does this new invasive technology take us and what are the implications for privacy?! Only time will tell.

Sparta is boss!

IN what is considered as one of the best displays of Futsal in recent times, Sparta Boss edged Back Circle 2 – 1 on kicks from the penalty spot, to take the Magnum Mash Cup Futsal Championship on Saturday.

Playing at the National Gymnasium in front of a mammoth crowd, which included Minister of State Joseph Harmon and Director of Sport Christopher Jones, the two sides ended regulation and extra time deadlocked on four goals each, after an entertaining exchange.

Guyana’s most decorated team in the futsal format, Sparta Boss, continued their mastery over local teams when they outlasted a stubborn Back Circle side in penalty shootout to underline their status as the best team in the shorter version of the sport.

In the third place playoff, dethroned champion Bent Street took a similar route, defeating ‘Gold is Money’3-1 in a penalty shootout after their clash ended 2-2 in regulation time.

The predicted large turnout saw the old adage of ‘success breathes enemy’ unfold right before their eyes when Sparta Boss took the lead in the 10th minute through the experience Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, who netted to give them the early ascendancy.

However, that celebration was short-lived as another player of vast familiarity with the format, Selwyn Williams, equalised one minute later to level the proceedings.

Back Circle then took the lead through Jermain Beckles in the 17th minute to send their supporters into wild celebrations, just like what

they had done; Sparta Boss riposte was swift as well when Eusi ‘Boney Man’ Phillips scored two minutes later to keep the pulsating contest deadlocked 2-2 at the break.

With all to play for in the final period, the two juggernauts entertained the crowd with some mesmerizing football, but it was not until the 32nd minute that the gridlock was broken when the prolific Ryan ‘Bum Bum’ Hackett penetrated the Back Circle defence to hit his effort into the goal.

Back Circle, known for their unmatched resilience, responded two minutes later when Beckles netted his second goal to level things as full time approached.

Sarkar, Mahmudullah’s heroics in vain as NZ win by innings WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Trent Boult provided the impetus needed for New Zealand with a five-wicket haul as the hosts completed an innings and 52-run victory over Bangladesh on the fourth day of the first Test in Hamilton on Sunday.

Boult broke a resolute 235-run stand between Soumya Sarkar and stand-in captain Mahmudullah that frustrated New Zealand’s bowlers as they toiled in warm conditions at Seddon Park.

The left-arm seamer got the second new ball to swing

back, brush Sarkar’s pad and cannon into his off-stump to end the 26-year-old’s 171ball innings on 149. It was Sarkar’s first test century.

Gibson lifts UG to four-wicket win over GNIC in 40-over clash A SOLID all-round performance from Andrew Gibson propelled the University of Guyana to a four-wicket win in their last game of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) NBS Second Division 40-over cricket competition on Saturday at the GNIC ground.

Title-chasing Liverpool frustrated in goalless derby draw

By Simon Evans LIVERPOOL, England, (Reuters) - - Liverpool were left a point behind Premier League leaders Manchester City after they were held 0-0 by Everton in Sunday’s Merseyside derby — the fourth draw in six games for Juergen Klopp’s side.

City, who won 1-0 at Bournemouth on Saturday, have 71 points while Liverpool are on 70, with both teams having nine games to play.

It promises to be a tense and thrilling finale to the season but Liverpool, who have frittered away a seven-point lead, will need to regain their momentum quickly if they are to push for their first league title since 1990.

“I’m completely fine with chasing,” said Klopp.

“Who wants to be top of the table at the beginning of March? It is nice but there are lots of games to play.”

The result of a typically frantic derby on its own is no cause for alarm for Klopp, but the eight-point swing to City since Jan. 30 is a trend they simply have to end.

There were few chances for either team, with Liverpool’s forward line failing to sparkle and Everton’s impressive industry not matched by craft in the final third.

Everton were desperate to stop their rivals picking up maximum points with manager Marco Silva adjusting his team accordingly as Morgan Schneiderlin was preferred to the more creative Andre Gomes.

Demerara, who finished the competition unbeaten, won the toss and opted to field at the GCC ground, Bourda.

ICC assures members of robust security at World Cup

MUMBAI (Reuters) - The International Cricket Council (ICC) has assured its members of a tight security plan for this year’s World Cup in England after the Indian cricket board sought guarantees from the governing body following a suicide-bomb attack in Kashmir last month.

The BCCI had expressed concern about security during the World Cup in a letter to the ICC after

last month’s attack in the disputed region that killed 40 Indian paramilitary troops.

“As you would expect for a global sporting event, the ICC, in partnership with the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) has a robust security plan in place for the men’s Cricket World Cup,” ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said following board meetings in Dubai.

“We work closely with the authorities in our host countries to ensure that the

safety of players, officials and fans is a priority.

“Should those authorities raise the threat level of the event based on intelligence, we will of course uplift our security commitment as appropriate.

“We will continue to work with the ECB and our members throughout the build up to and during the tournament to keep everyone abreast of the situation.”

The attack, the worst in the troubled area, was

claimed by Pakistan-based militants and further soured relations between the bitter nuclear-armed rivals, prompting calls within India for the country to sever all sporting ties with Pakistan.

The BCCI had urged the cricket community to ostracise Pakistan in their letter to the ICC. India are scheduled to play their World Cup match against Pakistan in Manchester on June 16.
