Mashramani 2019: Colourful, educational, and informative

WITH what was possibly one of the biggest crowd turnout in recent times, this year’s Mashramani Costume and Float Parade was complimented for being “colourful”, “educational” and “informative” by several of the patrons who turned out at the D’Urban Park to enjoy the

festivities on Saturday.

Though patrons trickled in during the day, by 17:00hrs D’Urban Park was packed to capacity with patrons of all races and ages, from babies that were just months old to senior citizens.

Many came with their families, many came with their friends, while some

came alone and found company on site, regardless of who they enjoyed the day with; the general consensus is that Mashramani 2019 was one of the better-held Mash celebrations in recent times.

“You could see they put a lot into it,” commented Mizana Gonsalves, who came out with her five nieces and nephews.

Her favourite float was presented by the Ministry of the Presidency Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sports, which had the different sections of their band representing the different colours of the Golden Arrowhead.

The department’s float was the first float of the day on the parade line, entering D’Urban Park sometime after 2:oo pm yesterday afternoon. The day saw a total of 27 Mash bands making up the parade line. There were also a number of party trucks added into the mix.

Salomie Jeffrey, who enjoyed the day in the company of her husband and daughter, was particularly impressed by the inclusion of a band from the Chinese Association. She thought this year’s parade was much better than last year’s.

“There were the lil’ improvements, especially with the Chinese organisation.

The atmosphere and the people, everybody was just in the Mash mood, looking bright and colourful,” shared Jeffrey.

Jeffrey and her family travelled all the way from Parika to be a part of Mash.

THE Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBA) is ready to issue to the residents of Linden, the licence for the Linden Television Station (LTV) in a matter of one week.

This was related to the residents by Minister of State Joseph Harmon at the flag-raising ceremony on Friday evening.

The licence has already been prepared and signed, Harmon said, and he will make it his duty to get the players together to look into some housekeeping matters within the week, thus making sure all systems are in place for its official handing over. One of the requirements is the establishment of a management committee. Harmon also said the National Communication Network (NCN) has already identified the equipment to be used for the television

station and everything will be in place.

“This is historical for you Linden. Things are happening here in Linden and once we have worked out those issues, you can be assured that you will receive the licence within one week,” he told the large gathering.

In response to this good news, Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueira, who was part of the initial Board of Directors for the Linden Television Station, on behalf of the residents of Linden, said the issuance of the licence has always been of top priority for this administration, but while it was not in the public’s purview, steps were taken to ensure that legally, the station, when handed over, will belong to the residents of Linden and that they are the main beneficiaries of same.

“This television station belongs to the residents and residents must have legal ownership of

it, and not a few chosen names. I am happy that the process of issuance has finally come to fruition and this is just another example of how important the needs of the residents of Linden are to the David Granger Administration. We, the regional officials, will ensure that the purpose of this station will be fulfilled and residents will be the main beneficiaries,” he said.

It was the public’s opinion that the Board of Directors was factionalised, which resulted in the stymieing of the issuance of the licence.

In his address, Minister Harmon admonished Linden leaders and residents at large to unite and corporate so that the benefits of the plethora of development in store will be realised by all.

Channel 13 is expected to be handed over to LTV. The application for a television station was made after residents complained about the limited and biased content that they were subjected to.

The government signed an agreement to grant the license on August 21st, 2012, after a deadly protest which resulted in the death of three Lindeners.

Women vent their anger

–– at Vatican child abuse conference VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A nun and a woman journalist delivered the toughest criticism of Church leaders heard so far at Pope Francis’ sexual abuse conference on Saturday, accusing them of hypocrisy and covering up horrendous crimes against children.

“We proclaim the Ten Commandments and parade ourselves as being the custodians of moral standards and values and good behavior in society. Hypocrites at times?

Yes! Why did we keep silent for so long?” she said.

She told the pope, sitting near her on the dais, that she admired him because he was “humble enough to change your mind,” apologise and take action after he initially defended a Chilean bishop accused of covering up abuse.

The bishop later resigned.

“How could the clerical Church have kept silent, covering these atrocities? The silence, the carrying of the secrets in the hearts of the

perpetrators, the length of the abuses and the constant transfers of perpetrators are unimaginable,” she said.

She spoke of her shock when she watched the 2015 Oscar-winning film Spotlight, which showed how Church leaders in Boston moved predator priests from parish to parish instead of defrocking them or turning them over to civil authorities.

“We must acknowledge that our mediocrity, hypocrisy and complacency have brought us to this disgraceful and scandalous place we find ourselves as a Church. We pause to pray, Lord have mercy on us!” Openibo said.

“JOURNALISTS WILL BE YOUR WORST ENEMIES” Valentina Alazraki, 64, a

Mexican television reporter who, having covered five papacies, is the doyen of the Vatican press corps, told the bishops she was speaking as a woman and mother as well as a journalist.

“For a mother, there are no first or second-class children: there are stronger children and more vulnerable ones. Nor are there first and second-class children for the Church,” she said. “(The Church’s) seemingly more important children, as are you, bishops and cardinals - I dare not say the Pope - are no more so than any other boy, girl or young person who has experienced the tragedy of being the victim of abuse by a priest,” she said forcefully in Spanish.

Alazraki told the bishops they could no longer “play ostrich” and bury their heads in the sand.

“If you do not decide in a radical way to be on the side of the children, mothers, families, civil society, you are right to be afraid of us, because we journalists, who seek the common good, will be your worst enemies,” she said.

Alazraki, who was applauded at the end of her speech, also spoke of cases of corruption where religious orders and Church officials hid abuse because “money, compensation, gifts” or other illegal or unethical activity.

Earlier, German Cardinal Reinhard Marx called for more “traceability and transparency” such as limiting secrecy in cases of abuse handled by the Vatican, releasing more statistics and publishing judicial procedures.

“Files that could have documented the terrible deeds and named those responsible were destroyed, or not even created. Instead of the perpetrators, the victims were regulated and silence imposed on them,” Marx, a leading progressive, said.

“The rights of victims were effectively trampled underfoot, and left to the whims of individuals,” he added.

The abuse crisis has made 2018 one of the toughest years for the pope since his election in 2013.

Chile’s 34 bishops offered to resign over the scandal, the pope’s trip to Ireland exposed decades of abuse in the once staunchly Catholic nation and a grand jury in Pennsylvania revealed priests sexually abused about 1,000 people over seven decades in that U.S. state alone.

Victims, some of whom told painful stories of abuse and cover-up when the conference began on Thursday, rallied in a Rome square before a march to the Vatican to demand change and justice.

The conference ends on Sunday when the pope will make a final speech. The Vatican says it will formulate follow-up measures to make sure all bishop return home knowing how to put anti-abuse procedures into place.

Preserving Indigenous languages

IN the last two years, a renewed interest has arisen in the preservation and use of the Indigenous peoples’ languages. There are nine nations of Indigenous peoples: Arawaks, Arecunas, Akawaios, Caribs, Macushis, Patamonas, Wapichans, Warraus and Wai Wais, and they each speak a different language. In a country where several indigenous villages speak their first language, it give them a special importance.

This year 2019 having been declared the International Year of Indigenous Languages under the auspices of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has brought a greater focus on these Indigenous Peoples’ languages. The theme of the year, "Indigenous languages are important to sustainable development, peace-building and reconciliation" is especially relevant to Guyana and other countries of South America. To underline the great significance of the occasion, the launching of the Year was marked by a symposium at Aishalton, one of the larger Indigenous Peoples districts and was attended by Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, who represented the President, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Griffith; Dr Alim Hossein, Head of the Languages Department and other academics of the University, the Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and his Junior Minister, the UNESCO Guyana Representative, Ms Patrice La Fleur as well as a large gathering of the Indigenous peoples.

Much before the UNESCO declaration of the International Year of Indigenous Lan-

guages, the Government of Guyana and the university’s academics have been actively involved in promoting the Indigenous languages: government notices inviting applications for employment and for contracts were experimentally published in the Indigenous languages. And there is Radio Aishalton launched in 2018 and other Interior radio stations, which carry broadcasts in the Indigenous languages and the Ministry of Education has been working on introducing Indigenous language teaching in schools in Indigenous Peoples’ districts.

In his address, Prime Minister Nagamootoo noted that radio broadcasts in the hinterland "provide an opportunity for indigenous peoples to connect and preserve their languages. An informed population is an educated one and do strive after that. Hold on to your languages". Other speakers then made their contributions, each bringing further enrichment to the theme of the year. Ms La Fleur, the UNESCO representative, cited Article 13 of the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which states that Indigenous Peoples have the right to revitalise, use, and transmit to future generations their histories, languages, oral traditions, philosophies, writing systems and to designate and retain their own names for communities, places and persons. In the same vein as the previous speakers, Ms La Fleur urged residents and all attending the symposium to ensure that Indigenous youths know their languages.

Article 13 referred to above, outlines the policy of Indigenous languages preservation

and development in a most effective way and governments and academics have to pursue the guidelines set out in the Article if they wish to be successful. What has been done so far is worthy in preserving the Indigenous Peoples languages, but it is just the beginning.

Simultaneous with these preliminary efforts, a number of activities have to be embarked upon. These include formulating grammars for the respective languages; production of dictionaries of English and the nine Indigenous languages; phonetically writing their pronunciations and accentuations and capturing those pronunciations on voice tape; and above all, deciding which one of these languages should have the status of a lingua franca. Making a decision on a lingua franca would involve government, each of the nine language communities and the language specialists. Philological research has to be undertaken to help in producing the grammars and deciding what are the cognate languages among the nine. It is only when such work has been undertaken that there could be any fruitful and serious attempt to teach these languages in schools or elsewhere.

Another important factor in language preservation is that the language has to keep developing by adoption of modern words and expressions from other languages and be given an economic value. Except Indigenous languages are given an economic value, they would not be able to survive against English.

Such economic value could be given in various ways, as for example, using such languages in commerce or government officials

who work in Indigenous Peoples’ districts be required to be acquainted with the Indigenous languages.

The promotion and preservation of the Indigenous languages and working to achieve an Indigenous lingua franca is an assertion of cultural pluralism. In Guyana, there have been fairly vocal calls by ACDA and others for the Swahili language to be taught in schools, as well as Hindi-Urdu to be taught in primary and tertiary educational establishments and for these languages to be recognised like French or Spanish as a foreign language for recruitment to the Public Service. Hindi-Urdu is used in hundreds of temples and mosques, as well as in radio and TV broadcasts and Indian soaps are popular TV fare since many of them have English sub-titles. Hindi-Urdu songs are heard everywhere and after English is the most heard language in Guyana.

President David Granger has already expressed a policy position on ensuring the preservation of Indigenous peoples languages and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs has an ongoing project where it teaches the first language in all of the Indigenous Peoples districts. The focus of UNESCO this year can only add to these ongoing efforts in ensuring the sustainable development of our Indigenous peoples

Shimron Hetmyer’s soaring star!

Dear Editor, HETMYER's century in the second One Day Int’l against England was his fourth in just 22 ODIs. At his age, 22, no other Caribbean batsman had even scored more than one.

Sir Garfield Sobers, widely respected as the greatest cricketer who ever lived, said the youngster reminded him of himself. Sir Don Bradman had said the same of Sachin Tendulkar, who lived up to the comparison. Hetmyer

must know that there can be no greater praise for a cricketer and with it, no greater challenge. He must rise even higher.

Indeed, I saw the similarities long before Sobers uttered these words, which will be the biggest test for the young Guyanese who hails from Cumberland, Berbice. I thought it was a video of Sobers batting when I first saw Hetmyer batting on TV. The suppressed back lift he adopted to avoid being bowled by yorkers after

being advised by Sir Everton Weekes, the flourishing back-foot cover drive, the stride into the stroke, and the full follow through reminiscent of playing the long golf drives was trademark Sobers, no doubt. Yes, the ferocious pull and beautifully balanced cover drives that generated so much class and power, piercing the field, had to be Sir Garry.

The awesome power also evoked memories of Clive Lloyd. But no, it was the young Shimron Hetmyer,

a blend of these great West Indian batsmen. This young man effuses class whenever he is at the wicket, making you want to stop and watch him bat.

A batsman who combines the supreme batting skills of a Gary Sobers and a Clive Lloyd will be a champion batsman -- by a long mile. Wisden 1969 marvelled at the "lightning footwork" of Sobers as he got into position for his strokes. Commenting upon Sobers' six sixes in an over against his team

in 1968, Glamorgan captain Tony Lewis said: "It was not sheer slogging through strength, but scientific hitting with every movement working in harmony." Such is Shimron Hetmyer’s talent, and the promise he can fulfil.

It will be quite a challenge to live up to that expectation. Shimron, you don’t have to square-drive a yorker from Dennis Lillee bowling at almost 100 mph, as Sir Gary did, or hit six sixes in an over. Just play each ball on its merit. Re-

member, you have displayed enough class and talent to assure all that, as long as you maintain your professionalism to the game, and develop it, day by day, as Sobers said of another of your illustrious countrymen, Rohan Kanhai, you will be a superstar. The sponsors will line up to bid for you, and the crowds will jam the turnstiles to see you bat.

It is our duty to reject racism and division Dear editor, I AM the son of many races. I am he who was raised by a village on the East bank of the Essequibo. The Indian women who helped raise me, whom I admired and respected, who nourished and fed me, who loved me, are by extension, my mothers.

During the first nine years of my life I grew up in a village called Vergenoegen. My two best friends were Jamiel Osman and Lindon Phillips and we were inseparable. We played and joked a lot, sat in the same classroom, visited each other’s homes, and shared what we had. Lots of mischief... yeah, I said it. Lots of fun together. Lots of love.

Our parents were kind and loving. I remember Jamiel Osman's soft-spoken mother, her kindness and love, admonishing both Jamiel and me when we messed up. Lindon Phillips' mother was the same. Her smile comforted you. She liked to feed you. The village raised us, spoiled, but scolded us when we were bad.

Race did not matter.

You messed up, you got it, from anyone ... snatched at the wrist and even deliv-

ered home. Anyone could have done that and they did.

Neighbour Khan, back bent from hard, honest labour, weeding, fetching rice at the rice mill, etc. always with a smile or a story for me.

The first nine years, those critical years of a child's development, I lived in Markenday Street -- a respectable, no-nonsense and very strict Indian store owner with a street named after him.

But let me tell you about the women other than my blood relatives who helped raise me.

To our left was neighbour Shirah, Zaimoon, Sun sun, Chull the barber.

To our right, neighbour Lucille, her sun Clement who drove a Vauxhaul Viva, took my mother anywhere between Vergenoegen and Vreed-en-hoop. He also mentored me, allowed his nephew and me to play in his car, and took us for drives to buy sweets and stuff.

Then across the street, in front of us, my favourite, she who cuddled, nozzled, rocked me to sleep in her hammock, and fed me, neighbour Nelly. Ma as her children and daughters- inlaw called her.

By now you realised they were all East Indians,

Indo-Guyanese as they are called these days, but to me, Guyanese. I spent most of my time with her, as she milked her cows, tended to the sheep, with her in her hammock, in the kitchen, at night when she visited my mother to gaff, sometimes whispering because she didn’t want to wake me, according to my mother. But it didn’t always work, because I knew her scent, the sweet musical drawl in the cadence of her voice.

My mother said, somehow I sensed her presence and would find my way into her lap and allowed her to rock me to sleep. Though I believe the cool Atlantic sea breeze did me in.

No one in her family could eat unless I ate. I had my own bowl. No one, not any of my siblings could raise his/her voice, much less beat me when she was around. She adored and loved me, and I adored and loved her.

She helped raise me.

So you see, deep in me, are the memories of her. But

not only her, all the Indian people who only showed me love. How can I now, not trust my early childhood extended family? How can I hate a group of people with whom I played , shared classrooms, knowledge, and food? It’s like rejecting a very important part of me.

And there's no circumstance greater than what’s etched in every fibre, every cell, every nucleus in me.

I have friends of different races, people with whom I communicate, enquire of their health and wellness, listen to their concerns about their place, my place, our place in this brewing political storm. I listen.

Last night I spoke with Sasenarine Singh. We spoke as alumni, brothers, friends.

Yes, he’s a Bishops' boy.

We joked, laughed, shared ideas, listened to each other.

Why? We respect each other. I have videos with Sase on my show, 2015, sharing knowledge, economics, finance, and political ideas.

Sase is passionate, effervescent in his politics, can be construed as divisive, but he's a son of our soil, and such energy, should be harnessed and channelled for the betterment of all. I told him so. We laughed.

He can’t help himself.

Bishops' took him in young, educated and groomed him.

It’s a Bishops' thing, a Guyanese thing. Don’t read too much into it.

Reach out brethren.

Guyana belongs to all of us. It’s in our best interest to reject racism, reject the politics of old, reject any ideology that separates us.

Guyana has suffered, and will suffer, divided. We the people are responsible, and

must find a new way, develop a new vocabulary that allows us to communicate with compassion, love and respect.

We owe it to our children, and their children, to be better.

Better has to come, but we have to be and do better for we are the better, we are awaiting.

I cannot be what I’m not. I cannot hate anyone. I cannot in good conscience, be divisive.

Ali is absolutely a rubber Deceptive attempt stamp product of his party at re-clothing Dear Editor, EXACTLY what is Irfaan Ali, by his latest statement, “If I am a rubber stamp, then the entire PPP/C family is’’, is trying to achieve politically by such a truism is anyone’s guess; except to say that it is a truism.

Further, if it is one subtly seeking to convey, or make a case for democracy, then he is a liar of no mean proportion.

Editor, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic has never been more a party shackled by autocratic leadership, a natural, interlinked ally of democratic centralism than it is now. The fact that three very senior party members were abused because they took principled positions on matters such as rampant corruption, and the internal

dynamics of the party as it related to the manner of choosing its presidential nominee, among other issues, speaks to the party’s intolerance of internal dissent, and those who are independent- minded.

The latter attribute, was sure to have been mainly responsible for Anil Nandlall not being favoured by party boss, Bharrat Jagdeo. It is now a matter of history that two of those members walked away from the party which they had served for over 50 years, while the other was expelled.

One must understand that the undemocratic nature of the party should also be examined and found against the background of the monolithic nature of the party’s support base, built exclusively on the bedrock of racism, which traditionally has always closed ranks without questioning/

holding their party leaders accountable on very serious issues, which would have been a constant of the party’s former administration of governance during the 23 years spent in office. The blind and unquestionable support of its mass base has not been helpful in any way to understand that its entire ideology of implicit adherence to party support line, disallowing any opportunity of objectivity as it pertains to the manner of how it conducts business, internally or externally, has continued to drive it deeper into the dark pits of political ignorance. In fact, it is beyond any semblance of rescue from such political darkness, however long its base support continues its muted existence as members, and given the nature of its current leadership – wholly

autocratic.

It is a shame that its members would rather have expressed their hurt and despair about their party’s affairs and how they had performed in government in the safety of their homes, rather than publicly within their respective communities and risk being ostracised. Thus, of course, Ali is expressing a self-truth, and one which reflects the manner as to how his party behaves politically. Certainly, he is aware that the manner of his choice as his party’s nominee is entirely out of its tradition of rubber stamping, of which he is a well- known product.

PSC not a political party Dear Editor: THERE is mutiny in the PPP-controlled Guyana Private Sector Commission (PSC). Members are objecting to its leaders' open hostility to the APNU+AFC coalition government and brazen endorsement of the opposition PPP. The PSC's recklessness should have been checked long before its credibility and reputation collapsed into this destructive, partisan, political sinkhole.

The Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) and I, as well as Dr. Mark Devonish and others, expressed serious concerns about the PSC's emergence as a mouthpiece for the PPP. Its attacks on the government indicate that the PSC's leadership has invested in the PPP's attempt to depose the democratically elected government.

The PSC is a not-for-profit organisation. It was formed to advocate for business interests and development and help promote a conducive environment for private investment and business development. It is not a political party. It has no expertise nor competence in the law or governance. Nevertheless, because of the obvious political allegiance of most in its leaders to the PPP, the PSC has allowed itself to be used by the PPP to attack the government.

It has incessantly claimed the government is violating the constitution and has been recklessly parroting PPP propaganda. Of all the organisations in Guyana, what gives the PSC the right to be a so-called champion of the constitution? Who told the PSC that its

interpretation of the constitution is right and veracious? Why should the government follow the PSC’s interpretation of the law? What is the PSC's locus standi in the no- confidence vote? What role did the PSC play in the PPP's attempt to pervert the provisions of the constitution to depose the democratically elected government? The PSC must answer!

The PSC's decision to partner with the PPP in a show of force against the government has troubled some members. Several members contacted me to express disgust with the PSC leadership's attacks on the government and the contentious environment such attacks have engendered. They bemoaned the absence of consultations to obtain the views of the wider membership before these partisan pronouncements are made. They affirmed that the views expressed by the leadership do not reflect theirs.

They are outraged that Mr. Kit Nascimento jumped into the political fracas to engage in personal, political attacks on behalf of the PSC. They are indignant that, one day after Nascimento made a splash all across the national media as a PSC representative, he found himself at the head table of a PPP campaign event seated next to PPP presidential candidate Irfaan Ali. Moreover, they believed Mr. Nascimento's personal attack on President David Granger was disgraceful and unacceptable.

It is therefore not surprising when a journalist sent me a letter from the secretary of the PSC for my comment. The letter warned the organisation's leaders that the PSC’s unfortunate, political

attacks on the government have opened the organisation to severe criticism. The letter is apposite. It vindicates my contention that the PSC has crossed the line to emerge as a political adversary of the government and partner of the political opposition. The letter also directed Mr. Nascimento to desist from acting on behalf of the PSC without permission.

This is an appropriate repudiation of Mr. Nascimento. His odious, political attacks have further damaged the PSC's reputation and destroyed public trust in the organisation. Guyanese must no longer trust this organization; it has nefarious motives.

No government in the world will tolerate this level of political undermining and sinister conspiracy by a not-for-profit, private sector entity.

The PSC is moonlighting as the PPP’s political enforcer and renegade in chief.

The posture has done irrevocable harm to the organisation. The nation must no longer trust this entity as a business outfit. It is not. It must be seen for what its leadership has created: a PPP front organisation and an opposition political force.

Coalition supporters must therefore take up the mandate to defeat the PPP and its PSC partner. Business owners who oppose the PSC's endorsement of the PPP should pull out of the PSC and form a parallel private sector organisation. Break it up!

EXACTLY what impression Christopher Ram is seeking to convey when he recently reported that he had written the commissioner of police, requesting that he order an investigation into, “The possible violation of Guyana’s constitution and other laws by seven government and opposition parliamentarians who are dual citizens?

This is the deceptive mask of a social commentator and a political chameleon that has already been unmasked. In fact, he has performed such a task, by his own acts of political spite and alignment with the criminal politicians whom he had once castigated for their perfidious acts of state pillage.

Christopher Ram must know that he has lost all credibility, as one of the former keepers and defenders of the national conscience.

He has, since 2015, been seen as an opportunist, and a representative and defender of vested interests that are inherently racist.

Ram is easily recognised as the leading public commentator, and as part of a right wing reactionary movement against the coalition government that comprises primarily the Private Sector Commission, sections of the private media, a collective of former PPP/C officials, whose only aim has been to deliberately tarnish the image of the government, by seeking to discredit the numerous initiatives deployed since 2015 to usher in genuine socio-economic development that will benefit all the people of Guyana, irrespective of race or political affiliation.

Led by a desperate, devious and deceptive opposition leader who daily frantically tries to pull out all the stops towards ensuring that through sections of the media he outpours an avalanche of daily lies, this is the group bent on

removing the government by any means which Ram has continued to support.

For a public figure whose voice once echoed loudest from the hilltops against rampant and unchecked corruption of the former PPP/C administration, and which his audit firm through its unmasking of the Pradoville 2 fraud, had provided as an example. This is the real Christopher Ram who has finally emerged, even criticising the legislating of the State Assets Recovery Agency, as exceeding its powers and authority, even advocating for its closure.

But it is not difficult to understand the inexplicable, against the background of the vested interests to protect.

Therefore, for Ram to be now deceptively attempting to re-clothe himself as national moralist by demanding an investigation into “The possible violation of Guyana’s constitution and other laws by seven government and opposition parliamentarians who are dual citizens,” is another glaring example of a hypocrite, a national hypocrite, displaying a defined characteristic for which he has since become known. He has lost such a moral high ground by his re-alignment with the very political criminals and pillagers of state assets, with whom he now cohorts.

Obviously, he and his cohorts would have always been aware of this contradiction, and need not have waited for a court’s ruling to validate the relevant article of the constitution.

Thus, it is quite asinine for Ram, or any other person(s) of his ilk, to take such steps on a matter at a time when the political parties will obviously have to make a decision.

FOR several days we felt the tremor from the sound systems.

From different directions came the heavy pounding from drums, the voices of DJs crowning rhythmic choruses and the pulsating mixture of music. Then on Mash Day yesterday, as floats passed The Residence, there was a crescendo in the background medley, “WE READY FOR THE ROAD”!

The glass windows on this “heritage building” were rattling.

My wife and I peered from the front windows to see a posse of youth, in green and red, on a big truck, repeating, “we ready; we ready”.

POLITICAL ADRENALIN It was a note from a jingle that I last heard during the 2015 elections campaign, and my political adrenalin started to gush to my feet and to my head, and I was ready for action.

I didn’t know whether I should sit in my study and finish this piece, or put on my shoes and hit the road!

“We ready!”

That was the Mash feeling everywhere as Guyana celebrated the 49th year since attaining Republican status.

We were there on Friday night, when the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted at D’urban Park, once described as an “urban jungle”. It was an emotional moment of identifying with our national flag the generations – the heroes - who made sacrifices before our time, for Guyana’s freedom.

In their memory we sang the refrain from our National Anthem: “We are born of their sacrifice, heirs of their pains, And ours is the glory their eyes did not see One land of six peoples, united and free”.

ESSENCE OF FREEDOM In his Republic Day message, President David Granger reminded our people of the essence of this freedom, since “everyone wins when the nation is united”.

The call for unity is perhaps the word most often spoken by our leaders, present and past. It was the elusive goal of both Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham after the split during 1955 in the once united nationalist movement. It was partially achieved after 1975 when unity between the major, splintered political blocs assumed the form of “critical support” and calls for “unity government”. Then, when the six-party APNU+AFC Coalition took office in 2015, unity took a broader organisational form at the governance level.

That was a concrete development and a work in progress toward national unity.

The need for unity today is different from that of the past when we had to come together to win our freedom. Guyana today is a plural, multi-party democracy. The unity that we need today is a necessity to protect our gains, and to ensure that all Guyanese enjoy the fruits of our nation.

This is why President Granger urged: “Let us work together to ensure that our country remains secure, our economy is stable and that everyone is safe and could enjoy the good life… Guyanese today celebrate the gains made to improve the lives of citizens through public education, public health, public information, public infrastructure, public security, public telecommunications, social protection, access to public services including water and electricity, “ the President explained.

POLITICAL ADVOCACY The theme of unity runs through a message that I posted on the Prime Minister’s Facebook page.

“Our Guyana today remains peaceful, stable and orderly, with a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural population that is striving daily to realise the goal of being one, united Guyanese people, as one nation with a common destiny”.

While it may not be prudent to inject political advocacy

in these columns today, I would venture to say that this unity that we talk about and that we need like oxygen to a challenged patient, is political in substance. It is a unity that goes beyond symbolism. It must be bigger and wider than limited coalition unity.

It is commendable that the Executive recognizes the need for togetherness, and has left open the avenues for greater inclusion. But it must be the concern of all patriotic Guyanese that a section of the political directorate is dis-interested in broad-based unity. It feeds on discontent and disaffection. It’s preference to unity is dissent and disorder.

I have noted the posture of the ill-advised Leader of the Opposition who is throwing tantrums, one after the other, as to why he would not engage with the Executive on a way forward. He sees elections as a goal, not as a means to achieve national objectives such as unity. If I were him, I would have no qualms in flagging down the President as he drives to Pearl or any other place. The nation’s interest requires just this, not idle bombast and infantile arrogance!

This moribund opposition wants instead “foreign interference” in the internal affairs of Guyana.

I still vividly remember standing in the lawns of a former US Ambassador, Brent Hardt, who was insulted by a PPP sycophant, clothed then as the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs.

She gave what her political handler and guru described as a proper “feral blast” for crossing the “red line”.

NO INTERFERENCE That red line was alleged interference in the internal affairs of Guyana by an American diplomat.

Today, that is just what the Opposition Leader is advocating. And, if he has his way, that interference could assume proportions that could compromise our country’s sovereignty and national interest. I will focus on the latter in a future column.

If he is hoping that Washington would lend him an ear, then he is mistaken. Judging from the message by President Donald Trump to President Granger, the United States “recognizes and honours Guyana’s respect for the principles and integrity of democratic governance and institutions”. President Trump described Guyana as “one of the most important partners” of the United States in “ensuring that the Americas remain a zone of democracy, freedom and security”.

There would be no foreign interference in Guyana. Our people are vigilant, and they would not pawn the freedom they enjoy under our Republic for diktat from outside forces. We have to approach our internal order as true nationals would do as patriots, not political mercenaries.

We must be guided in what we do by the behest in our Song of the Republic: “From Pakaraima’s peaks of pow’r To Corentyne’s lush sands, Her children pledge each faithful hour To guard Guyana’s lands.

To foil the shock of rude invader Who’d violate her earth, To cherish and defend forever The State that gave them birth.”

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative

THE Department of Public Information (DPI) announced last week that Guyana is on track to submit its first report to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in April.

Participation in the EITI is an important step in Guyana’s effort to ensure transparency and accountability for how oil revenues are spent and saved when production begins in 2020. More than 5 billion barrels have been found so far, including two new finds in the past month, and the government of Guyana is expected to take in tens of billions of US dollars in revenue over the next decade.

Many in Guyana are not familiar with the EITI organisation. The EITI does not have the same role as other international organisations, like the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund.

Instead, the EITI is a voluntary global coalition of countries with active resource industries that have come together to promote “the open and accountable management of oil, gas

and mineral resources,” according to its website.

To this end, the EITI is most well known for establishing a set of global standard practices for countries managing their resource industries. Countries with an interest and commitment to upholding the standards can apply for membership in the group.

The 51 “implementing” countries are continuously measured on their individual progress toward established transparency goals.

The standards set by the coalition focus on transparency and require the disclosure of information throughout the extractive industry value chain. This includes reporting on how revenues make their way through the government and how they benefit the public. The EITI does not recommend specific tools for managing resource revenues like sovereign wealth funds. Instead, it aims to promote responsible management of extractive industry revenues by reinforcing the principle that public accountability and open political processes are less vul-

nerable to corruption and mismanagement.

The standards also focus on the role of stakeholders through the process including civil society groups, companies and government, and progress on compliance with these standards is reassessed regularly, depending on the country’s progress.

Membership in the EITI is broad and varied. The group includes countries as diverse as the United Kingdom, Azerbaijan, Botswana, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Norway.

Membership generally serves as a signal to international investors and other nations that a participating country is taking responsible fiscal management seriously and is committed to reducing corruption.

Guyana became a candidate for membership in October 2017 and formed the Guyana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GYEITI) as an independent agency. The government first committed to joining the nearly 40-year-old organisation in 2010.

The independent administrator of the EITI in Guyana told the DPI that their report on Guyana’s transparency progress will be submitted by April 25 as part of the two-anda-half-year validation process for prospective members of the EITI. The report will include information on the mining, forestry, and energy sectors in Guyana. GYEITI plans to eventually suggest amend-

ments to existing laws to increase transparency and accountability.

Critically, Guyana has already named a 12-member multi-stakeholder group that will be responsible for overseeing and implementing the EITI standards here in Guyana and has been receiving input from international experts on resource revenue auditing and taxation.

The chairs of the group include the Minister of Natural Resources, a representative of environmental group Conservation International, a technical officer for mining at the Ministry of Natural Resources, and a member of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission Board of Directors. The multi-stakeholder group also includes representatives of various companies involved in resource extraction and community members.

This broad inclusion is a vital part of ensuring that Guyana’s resources are managed according to the wishes and best interests of all Guyanese. Representatives from many groups will have a chance to monitor progress and affect the outcome.

While Guyana already has multiple initiatives like the Natural Resources Fund, currently being established to manage the wealth gained from oil exploration, Guyana’s progress on full EITI implementation is hopefully a step in the right direction toward sustainable and accountable development.

Street food is big business every 'Mash' –– but bar-b-cue was the favourite this year

By Michel Outridge THERE’S one thing that could be said about Guyanese: They’re loyal to a fault, no matter the circumstance.

And this was never more evident than this "Mash", when, despite the sweltering heat, they came out in their numbers from all corners of the country to celebrate our 49th Republic Anniversary.

The Guyana Chronicle was out and about to capture the moment, and spoke with those vendors plying their wares along Vlissengen Road and Church and Lamaha Streets.

Andre Murray was busy tending his bar-b-cue grill when we caught up with him at the corner of Church and Vlissengen. He’d already prepared some ‘cook-up’ to go with the chicken and some other little ‘meche-meche’, which he planned selling at very affordable prices.

It was his first time trying his hand at this sort of thing, and the very thought of it made him all excited, especially seeing as how it was Mashramani, the only time of year that is truly Guyanese.

The one thing he didn’t bargain for, however, was the preparing of it, which he soon came to realise is a time-consuming exercise. Luckily, he had the help of family.

Robert Osborne had just fired up his grill, and was about to do some chicken he’d seasoned overnight.

As with most other street-food vendors that day, BBQ was the go-to meal this "Mash" Day, served either plain or with the traditional peas and rice, what we here in Guyana like to call ‘cook-up rice’.

He said he chose to prepare his BBQ chicken on-the-spot, because some people like to see how it is being prepred for themselves before buying.

He said that many years ago, he used to have a food stall, especially on "Mash" Day, but hadn’t done it in a long time. The only reson he came out this year, he said, was because some friends of his encouraged him to do so.

And he wasn’t sorry he did either, as he was pleasantly surprised to see so many people out on the road as one this year.

As for the folks at Junior’s BBQ Grill from all the way up in Diamond on the East Bank Demerara, they began setting up shop on Vlissengen Road since 07:00hrs. They, too, had BBQ chicken with various rice dishes plus plantain chips, and they were very optimistic that by day’s end, their food would hve been all gone.

Cindy Daniels was one of three staffers manning the stall on "Mash" Day. Antiguan Roxanne Jackson was out braving the blazing sun as well; she was assisting her sister who had a liquor stand with all kinds of alcoholic drinks, along with some food on the side.

She stated that the event seems to be booming, and she is especially pleased to see so many people out with their families this year, lining the roadway to view the annual float parade.

Vanessa Wharton’s was a stall with a difference, as she had on sale an array of toys, among other things, including a trampoline for children which offered customers a chance at winning prizes for just $100 per chance.

In addition, she had games and the ‘spinning wheel’ and a ‘box of chances’ game where all sorts of prizes were up for grabs.

'Mash' 2019 costume and float parade dazzles thousands Story by Naomi Marshall and Vishani Ragobeer

THOUSANDS of revellers took the streets of Georgetown by storm as they joined in celebrating Mashramani 2019. Persons dressed in colourful costumes, dazzled in glitters and moving to the sound of soca, comprised the scene on Saturday.

It started on Camp Street and proceeded down Carifesta Avenue. It then went along Vlissingen Road from the Kitty Roundabout to the ending point at the D’Urban Park.

Participating in the parade was the Ministry of the Presidency, Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport, which had a band of 400-strong revellers dressed in all the colours of Guyana’s flag. “An element of surprise,” was one of the three floats showcased by the ministry and depicted the national flower of Guyana, the waterlily and Guyana’s national animal, the mighty jaguar.

Tucker, the float was designed by Nelsion Nurse under the theme, “Creating Guyana’s beauty in unity and cultural diversity.”

Up next was the Guyana Police Force which depicted the different police divisions in Guyana under the theme, “Improving police community relations for a better nation.”

According to Corporal Semple, the floats were built by the police themselves and the band comprised 300 revellers coming from the Felix Austin Police College dressed in red, blue and white.

Dancing to the sound of steelpans was the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, Region Three Regional Democratic Council that “palanced” under the theme, “Continue to shine with a green economy in mind, salute 49.” The band of 250 participants carried a float which showed Guyana’s map being guarded by macaws and jaguars.

Following the Essequibo islands was the Chinese Association who marched under the theme, “Celebrating our cultural diversity in the year of the pig.” The band which had over 200 revellers wore costumes of lions and dragons and also displayed the lion and dragon dance. According to organiser of the Chinese Association Band, Jason Wung, the costumes and dance displayed are of Chinese traditions done during the celebration of national holidays. “The colourfulness of it represents the happiness of the people,” Wung noted.

President of the Chinese Association, Ken Yang, stated that it is a norm for the Chinese Association to be a part of the Mashramani celebration; however, this year they came bigger, better and with more costumes to support the festival.

Dressed in costumes made of colourful feathers was the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, which mashed under the theme, “Togetherness will keep victory in line.” The band which competed in the category of medium band, consisted of 100 revellers dancing to “give me full access on de road.” The band showcased a float designed by Trevor Alfred, and which depicted the Cacique headdress representing the leadership of the indigenous communities.

Having a small band of 50 revellers was the Ministry of Education, which gave every one on Saturday the vision of where the country is going with Education, into the phase of smart classrooms.

Ministry of Education, Brushell Blackman noted that the ministry recognises that it is time “for us to move away from chalk and talk only because we are living in the 21st century; and so we have to continue to evolve.

We could no longer continue to use the old method.”

Blackman also indicated that the Ministry of Education is embarking on curriculum reform, which has not been done in almost three decades.

The Guyana Chronicle also met up with Guyana’s reigning Masquerade Champions, the Victorious Renegades, who were flouncing and bouncing in the streets to the sound of drums. With them were the “lang lady,” “bum bum sally” and “the mad bull cow.”

Jacqueline Charles, of the East Coast of Demerara, was also out with her masquerade band and noted that it was important to show “our culture, we love doing it and we are not giving up our tradition.” Charles’ band of 15 mainly consisted of family members and showcased mother sally, the mad bull cow, the lang lady, white bird, the flouncer, the steel man and the kettle man.

Guyana Shore Basic Inc., Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Public Health also took part in the 2019 Mashramani Parade.

Bringing up the rear of the parade were the Infrastructure, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Business ministries.

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure was led by Ministers of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson and Annette Ferguson.

Both of them braved the sun and made the walk and stopped ever so often for a photograph a little one wanted to take with them.

Ferguson-- dubbed Captain Ferguson for the day as she was dressed as a pilot-- especially seemed to be a favourite of the crowd.

The float for this ministry was guided by their theme: “Working together on infrastructural development through collaboration and partnership for an improved Guyana.”

And the floats focused heavily on developments in the aviation sector-- reflective of the expansion of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and reminiscent of the massive international aviation conference held here recently.

Of course, the party trucks could not be left out of the mix. Pulse Entertainment brought the usual hype, but this time they had local soca

artiste Jumo Primo leading the way. 592 Beer also had its party truck which had all the ingredients for a good time (in this context at least)- i.e., drinks, music and gyrating.

The Ministry of Agriculture designed their massive float under the theme: “From farm to farm; grow more and add value.”

If the massive black chicken wasn’t enough to capture your attention, the scores of revellers holding their rice stalks and sugar canes sure would have.

But then came the business ministry running through-- quite literally.

Their song was Mr. Killa’s ‘Run With It’ and instead of their marshals clearing the way, the revellers ran through, forcing spectators out of the way.

And perhaps changing the atmosphere from the hype to surreal was Maxi Williams and his very intricate designs.

Though they were few, it was evident that Maxi brought his ‘A’ game.

And then came the Region 10 float where they wanted to emphasize that though they host the mining town, they refuse to be left out of the new extractive sector- the oil and gas sector.

And closing off the day, were the two massive bands of Guyana’s largest political parties- the APNU+AFC coalition and the PPP/C. The two parties might have had their own supporters dressed in their respective green and red, but they were both celebrating Mash 49 with Victory in Mind.

– Harmon tells Lindeners at flag-raising ceremony

LINDENERS were on Friday urged to break every chain of regression, disparity, misfortune and poverty and celebrate Guyana’s great achievement of becoming a republic some 49 years ago.

For too long, Linden’s development has been crippled and so the residents of Linden gave him the assurance that they will not be going back into the dark era of neglect.

Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueira also hailed the momentous occasion. Every Guyanese, he said, must be responsible for chartering Guyana’s course as a free and independent nation. He also noted that Re-

STAND TOGETHER Mayor of Linden, Waneka Arrindell, also called for Lindeners to stand together and shun greed and deception as the town is poised for greatness.

“We can stand together and break all ties from Britain… we stuck together then and the onus is on us to stand together now. This is the time we must forget our difference, we are one people, one nation and we have one destiny. As a people, we are better together and together, Lindeners were urged to build back their communities, town, region and country. Linden was once the breadbasket of the country and this must become a reality again, but only through cooperation. We cannot allow greed to separate us, we have got to live in unity, we have lived in unity, when we had little and now that the bowels of the sea have blessed us with oil, it is our opportunity to stay united, for the betterment of our country,” she said.

Regional Chairman Renis Morian spoke extensively on youth empowerment in Region 10 and noted the many projects in store for 2019, which will see employment for youths. One of these is the Work Readiness Programme, made available through

In his highly appreciated and upbeat feature address, Minister Harmon stressed that as Guyana celebrates 49 years as a republic, it must realise that the nation is now on the cusp of unprecedented economic, social and cultural development.

To truly benefit from this historical development, Guyana, he said, must put aside its differences and bickering.

“It is time for us to unite and cooperate; it is time for the small man to become the real man -- this is the time, our future is bright, it is our time, this is our time,” Harmon stressed to loud applause.

“We are celebrating victory over our economic, social and cultural maladies, that affected us individually and collectively and the same way, we as a people, endured

chain of poverty, the chain of ignorance, the chain of crime and disease, we must break these chains to celebrate individual and personal victories, community victories, regional victories and national victories, this is our time,” he said.

The minister of state reassured the residents that the government will work every day to provide an enabling environment, so they can break these chains and achieve victories.

This, he said, will not be enjoyed by only the residents of Linden or in communities where the support for the coalition is known, but in all communities, across the length and breadth of Guyana.

Guyana’s worst constitutional crisis occurred in 2001

GENERAL and regional elections were held in Guyana on December 15, 1997. The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) won 29 out of 53 seats, the People’s National Congress (PNC) garnered 22 seats, and The United Force (TUF) and the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) acquired one seat apiece; voter turnout was 88.4%.

Following the December 15, 1997 elections, the opposition protested with vigour through the streets, citing numerous incidents of wanton fraud and obvious rigging. These protests were so massive and impactful, that the international and regional communities took notice and both parties were brought to the negotiating table. These talks resulted in the Saint Lucia statement, which was followed by the Herdmanston Accord.

A key part of the Herdmanston Accord was an agreement to cut the term of the PPP/C led government’s tenure. This was never respected by the governing side.

Added to this, one Ester Perreira filed a petition on the 25th February, 1998, under Articles 60, 162 and 163 of the constitution, the Representation of the People Act Cap. 1:03 and the National Assembly (Validity of Elections) Act Cap. 1:04, claiming the following in simple terms: (i) the elections were not free, fair and valid and (ii) the results were affected.

At the end of this case, the learned trial judge gave her 77-page judgment on the 15th of January, 2001 and made further oral orders on the 26th January, 2001. Madam Claudette Singh ‘vitiated’ the 1997 General and Regional Elections and plunged Guyana into uncharted constitutional waters. As a consequence of this landmark ruling, it was safely concluded that the PPP/C led government between 1997 and 2001 was not based on the verified will of the people.

Further, there was massive uncertainty if such a government could continue to exercise power with these manifestations, the worst constitutional crisis since our independence. It is worthy to note, prior to the commencement and conclusion of this case, that the PPP candidate Mrs.

Janet Jagan, threw over her shoulder, a writ that was intended to stop her being sworn in as the next President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. This attempt to impose the authority of the court was made futile due to the fact that Mrs. Jagan was in the process of being sworn in at a secret ceremony. Uncertainties reigned supreme in every crevice of Guyana’s constitutional existence.

Following the announcement of this judgment, all and sundry in Guyana’s legal and political sphere, expressed rhetoric that confirmed we had experienced the worst case of legal uncertainty since independence. The head of the Guyana Elections Commission, jurist, Doodnauth Singh, S.C stated; “This is unprecedented in that I have never heard in the Commonwealth of a judge declaring an entire national election as null and void. Usually, they do so in a region or constituency, but not in a national election. This is unprecedented and has serious implications for the country.” Desmond Hoyte, Leader of the Opposition declared, ‘We [are] in a constitutional crisis.’ This judgment by the learned jurist in ‘Esther Perreira v the State’ set a precedence of juridical ambiguity that cannot be easily rivalled in this polity. Despite this ominous reality, President Bharrat Jagdeo declared with stately lack of contrition, ‘It is business as usual.’

During this period of claimed illegality of the government and the Cabinet, there were several national budgets and numerous Cabinet decisions and projects executed at the level of the state. These decisions did not come under any review; they were covered under the doctrine of necessity. This is basic in politics and law, there must be a government.

Based on the aforementioned in relation to the no-confidence motion, it is safe to conclude the following: this is not our worst constitutional encounter; we have had worst experiences and every time this has occurred, the government of the day always remained in place to look after the welfare of the people and above all, there were inevitable negotiations that produced peaceful outcomes.

Coomacka residents receive land-allocation let ers

TWO hundred residents of Coomacka Mines, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) on Friday received allocation letters for the lands which they have been occupying for approximately six decades.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, presented the land-allocation letters to the residents. He said the government will continue its efforts to ensure that sustainable, family-oriented communities are created across the country.

The documents offer the residents ownership of the lands they have been occupying and now pave the way for them to be issued with land titles once surveys are completed. This is the first time the residents are receiving legal documentation for the occupied lands.

According to a statement from the Ministry of the Presidency, Minister Harmon told the residents that they had been neglected for far too long, but the David Granger-led government believes in empowering residents and communities.

Maternal deaths down 50% in Region One

MATERNAL deaths fell by 50 per cent in Barima/Waini (Region One) in 2018, acting Regional Health Officer (RHO), Dr Vishal Ramjas said Thursday.

Dr Ramjas made the announcement during the visit of Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr Karen Cummings, to the Hobodeia Health Post during a three-day stay in the Sub-Region to get a first-hand look at health-related progress in the hinterland area.

The RHO told a community gathering that fewer women died in 2018 from pregnancy-related complications in 2018 when compared to official Regional statistics compiled in 2017.

“We have recorded a decrease in our pregnant mothers dying. We realised in

2017 we had a high amount of deaths and in 2018, we had a decrease by half the amount”, he said.

There were five maternal deaths in 2017, and just two last year, the RHO said.

Ramjas attributed the slide in maternal deaths to reinforcement of the country’s National Maternal Mortality Reduction Plan which includes timely transfer of patients, early evaluation of patients, detection of high risk patients, availability of laboratory services for mothers at time of assessment, appraisal of pregnant women on their first visit by a doctor, and ultrasound being available on outreaches by MoPH team, Ramjas explained.

The Barima/Waini RHO told residents

that the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine is now being offered to boys and girls who are 9-16 years old, as part of a broader national strategy that helps in the fight against cervical cancer, which is among the leading causes of death among Guyanese women.

Parents can decide that they do not want their children to take the HPV vaccine, Minister of Public Health Volda Lawrence said when she announced the decision last week at the Pegasus Hotel in Georgetown.

Barima/Waini is expecting a new shipment of drugs, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies in the Region to treat common illness such as diabetes, hypertension, cold, flu, and diarrhoea. The RHO said too that the Health Post will be refurbished this year as part of the health sector improvement plan in the interior area.

Meanwhile, Minister within the public health ministry, Dr Karen Cummings, said provision of youth-friendly spaces can help delay sexual encounters and so help in the fight against teenage pregnancy.

“I want us to provide a more youth-friendly space so as to prevent teenage pregnancy and delay early sexual encounters”, Dr Cummings told residents.

Cummings said it is her desire for the village to have a community centre where residents, especially the youths, can engage in extra-curricular activities such as sports, movies and games nights.

“We can create a youth-friendly space for teenagers, a place where you can ventilate and interact with others”, she said.

While the minister is pleased with the visits by the government’s mobile dental team to the area, she wants eye-care services added to beef up the Region’s medical outreach package to Barima/Waini residents. The Health Post is currently being managed by community health worker, Mr Sean Thompson, who is a resident of Hobodeia.

Dr Cummings is the first government minister to visit Hobodeia, a riverine village on the Aruka River. It takes some 60 minutes by boat from Kumaka to reach the community, populated by approximately 400 persons.

Pathologist rules out 'death due to burns' – in case of little Quavo – GPHC says infant was returned in extremely weakened state

GEORGETOWN Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), though remorseful that little Quavo Daniel Kashika had sustained burns while in its care, said his death was not linked to the incident, based on a post-mortem conducted.

According to the GPHC, the infant, three weeks after his release, had returned in a weakened state.

“On 7th February 2019, some three weeks after discharge, Quavo was readmitted to GPHC in an extremely weakened state and with severe respiratory difficulties.

Unfortunately, despite the valiant efforts of the medical staff to stabilise him, he died on 8th February 2019, one day after readmission,” the GPHC said in a statement on Saturday.

In accordance with GPHC’s protocol, a post-mortem examination was conducted on February 15, 2019, and while the cause of death was stated as “inconclusive”, the pathologist ruled out “death due to burns”.

A bulb of a heat lamp located in the incubator to provide warmth for the infant had exploded, causing an area on Quavo’s arm and another on his leg to be scorched.

The family members have linked Quavo’s death to the burns sustained, but the hospital on Saturday sought to set the record straight.

It explained that Odessa Ford, the infant’s mother, was admitted to the GPHC’s Maternity Ward on December 19, 2018, where she gave birth to the premature infant male, Quavo.

“At the time of birth, the infant was diagnosed with

low birth weight, pulmonary sepsis and respiratory failure, all associated with premature birth. As is the norm with premature babies, the infant was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for care and treatment,” the hospital explained.

While his mother was discharged on December 22, 2018, Quavo remained in the NICU until he was discharged on January 21, 2019. During his stay at the hospital, Quavo remained intubated in the NICU and was closely monitored by the medical staff and treated with a variety of medication to improve his condition. However, days after his birth, on December 24, 2018, the bulb exploded, causing his arm and leg to be scorched.

“The attending physician was immediately summoned to examine the infant. On examination, the physician found superficial, non life-threatening burns to the infant’s left arm and leg.

Quavo was subsequently referred to our Burn Care Unit for review and management,” the hospital said.

NURSE ALSO BURNED It was noted that the nurse who was monitoring the NICU at the time also received superficial burns to her forearm as she removed Quavo from danger but no other infant was affected by this incident.

Quavo was discharged into the care of his mother on January 21, 2019.

According to the GPHC, Quavo’s mother and his grandmother, Sharon Harding, met with the hospital’s administration on February

12, 2019, seeking information with regard to the circumstances which led to the infant sustaining burns.

“They were informed that the Administration had already mandated that a thorough investigation be carried out and the findings relayed to them upon conclusion,” the hospital said while adding that the family was subsequently invited to the GPHC on February 18, 2019, for a report but family members were unavailable to attend. They were subsequently briefed on February 21, 2019.

“The family members were informed that the respiratory challenges and poor condition of the infant at the time of readmission were unrelated to his burns.

They were also informed that the superficial burns sustained by Quavo were not life-threatening and, as evidenced by the post-mortem report, did not cause his death.

“A formal apology was also offered to the family with regard to the burns sustained by the infant,” the GPHC explained.

According to the hospital, Quavo’s mother “appeared satisfied” with the explanation offered. However, his grandmother, who was not directly involved in the care of Quavo, remained relentless.

“The incident was an unfortunate one that was random and unforeseen.

We continue to monitor and conduct risk assessments on various types of equipment within this institution in an effort to continuously reduce the risks associated with their usage during patient care,” the hospital maintained.

The Board of Directors, Administration and staff of the GPHC formally apologize for the incident which resulted in Quavo Daniel Kashika being burnt, and express sincerest condolences to the bereaved family.

Guyana needs to do more to manage e-waste - says head of Department of Computer Science

REALISING the absence of an agency that deals with electronic waste (e-waste) in Guyana, Miss Penelope DeFreitas conducted a survey to ascertain the perception of Guyanese, when it comes to electronic disposal and management practices.

DeFreitas, who is the Head of Department (HoD) of Computer Science, University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus, carried out the survey among some 10,000 university students and staff.

Sharing her findings, through a seminar at the campus, (on Friday, February 22, 2019), Defreitas concluded that Guyana definitely needs to do more, when it comes to managing e-waste.

E-waste, as defined by the HoD in her presentation, are electronic products, such

as computers, TVs, Monitors, cell phones, VCRs, Players, Fax Machines and Printers, that have become unwanted, non-working or obsolete, and have reached the end of their useful life.

These electronic products, if disposed of into the environment, can cause tremendous harm to not only the environment, but to the health of human beings.

“When it gets out into the environment, through actions of the environmental factors like rain and sun, it starts to break down.

Then is when chemicals get released. Also when you burn them, toxins get released into the atmosphere.

These chemicals and toxins pose many health risks to human beings. They can be released into the air, water, soil, and come into contact with humans, causing cancer, birth defects, brain

damage, heart and lung damage, and many others. It may not affect us now, but 10, 20, 30 years from now, if there is a surge in cancers, people are going to wonder what’s going on,” DeFreitas said.

From the survey conducted, quite a number of persons said that they throw their devices away, and some even said that they burn their devices.

DeFeitas said that this should be a major cause of concern to the key players, like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).

She stated that the EPA had been making efforts, through the Environmental Protection Act Chapter 20:05 of the Laws of Guyana, but it speaks to solid waste and hazardous materials, broadly. However,

she believes that it deserves specific and in-depth attention.

“Despite the presence of the act, EPA has not been conducting any studies to track the disposal habits of citizens. I was made aware of the first e-waste export company, ‘Eternity Investment’, that was established in 2018, by EPA. They collect electronic waste and they export it to Korea to be recycled. But I have to call and find out what really happens, because it’s a meticulous process…

I was told by EPA, if you don’t have the exact weight, numbers of items in there, the container can be rejected and sent all the way back to Guyana,” DeFreitas disclosed.

She also highlighted that there are quite a number of manufacturers who have a system where persons can

return their e-waste to them.

However, from the survey, a large number of persons said that they do not return items to manufacturers because they fear that their data would get exposed. As such, they either keep the items, burn them, or throw them into the garbage.

This is why the HoD believes that there is need for an organised collecting agency that can assist with collecting and wiping data off devices, so that persons can feel more comfortable disposing their e-waste, the environmentally-friendly way.

DeFreitas shared that her next steps were to expand the group to include individuals with primary level education, determine the stakeholders that were engaged in addressing the challenge of e-waste in Guyana, determine

Norton sees united front as key – to Guyana realising its true potential MINISTER of Social Protection, Dr. George Norton, has called on the nation to see ‘Mash’ Day not only as a day of pageantry and jollification,but also as a symbolic reminder of the many achievements of our ancestors and how important it is for us to build on that legacy, in order to create an even

brighter future for generations to come.

In his Mash Day message, Minister Norton said, “As Guyanese, we must recognise today as a reminder of how much our ancestors have achieved for us, and how important it is for us to build on their legacy in order to create an even brighter future for

the generations that will follow.”

He also made a very important point, in that when the title of Cooperative Republic of Guyana was bestowed upon this nation back on February 23, 1970, it was meant to ignite in us as a people “a spirit of patriotism and pride.”

He also dwelt a bit on

the origin of the festivity, saying, “As every Guyanese knows, we commemorate this milestone with the hosting of a magnificent festival called Mashramani, an Indigenous word which means celebration after hard work. It features a spectacular costume, and float parade depicting the vibrancy of six cultures,

blended to a distinct perfection, will adorn our roads.”

But above all, the minister said that achieving social cohesion is the key to Guyana realising its true potential. “Our united efforts will propel us to prosperity. It will also be assurance that our descendants will grow up in a country of equality, inclusion, harmony and peace – a place where diversities are embraced and

all are accepted with love and kindness.

He concluded his message by wishing all Guyanese at home, and across the world, a Happy Mashramani.

And, in keeping with the anniversary motto, “Celebrate Mash 49 With Victory in Mind, he said, “and make the commitment to do your part in Guyana becoming the paradise she was always meant to be.”

Albion, Blairmont to commence harvesting in March

HARVESTING of sugar at the Albion and Blairmont sugar estates will commence on March 1, 2019.

Despite challenges and setbacks, the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) will be moving ahead with its operations for this year.

GuySuCo Public Relations Officer Audreyanna Thomas, said harvesting will commence at the two estates on March 1 but, actual grinding of sugar will start on March 2, 2019.

The corporation is yet to decide on a commencement date for the Uitvlugt Estate but, when it starts, grinding will last for seven weeks, while Blairmont will take six weeks and grinding at Albion will take nine weeks.

It was reported that the production target for 2019 is 113,262 tonnes and approximately 131,000 tonnes of sugar in 2020 and 141,431 tonnes by 2021.

In order to achieve that goal, Thomas said GuySuCo will be boosting its capacity by hiring 150 cane harvesters, three electricians, two fitter machin-

ists, one diesel mechanic and one staff nurse for Blairmont. Over at Albion, the corporation will also be hiring cane harvesters, shovel-men, rat hunters and weeders.

Last year, Agriculture Minister Noel Holder had said that in order for the projections to be achieved, capital investments of over $17 billion will be made in the next three years; these woud be done in a timely manner to ensure the security of production and to maximise the quality of the end production.

GuySuCo Chairman John Dow had said it would be an uphill task to bring the sugar corporation back to profitability, but he is up for the challenge.

Dow, in an interview with the Guyana Chronicle last year, had expressed hope of having the industry return to a state of profitability under his watch.

He however had also made it clear that it is no easy task, given GuySuCo’s current state of affairs and the price of sugar on the world market.

“As you know, the sugar industry, because of the low price of raw sugar worldwide, is now suffering,” he said.

The challenges in the industry are not limited to Guyana, Dow said; he noted that Jamaica, Belize, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago have experienced, and in some cases, continue to experience their fair share of challenges.

“As you may know, Trinidad had to shut down their industry, Antigua went out of sugar many years ago…. In the Caribbean really, it is only Guyana, Belize, Jamaica, Barbados that are still

producing sugar; and I think that you will find that only in Belize, the actual production has improved; but all the others, Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana… for example Barbados had three factories up to mid-2002, they now only have one, and that is the situation, it is very challenging,” he explained to this newspaper.

The GuySuCo chairman expressed the hope that with increased production of value-added products, the sugar corporation would be able to revive itself.

GMC cultivates farmers’ network

WITH the aim to continue promoting linkages among farmers, buyers and service providers, the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) has met with farmers at Crabwood Creek, Berbice.

The meeting was facilitated through the GMC’s Extension Department, which is in a drive to continuously improve the livelihoods of farmers.

Twenty-two farmers from Parika, three farmers from Mara on the East Bank of Berbice, and four farmers from Central Corentyne, Berbice, travelled to Crabwood Creek to participate in the

farmers’ exchange visit.

According to a GMC press statement, the team then journeyed by boats into the backlands where cultivation is done, after which a tour of the area was undertaken.

The visitors observed keenly the different practices undertaken by the Crabwood Creek farmers, after which a general discussion was facilitated by GMC Regional Marketing Coordinator, Milton Dookie.

Additionally, the exchange visit, Dookie explained, will also promote social cohesion among stakeholders--a necessity for the building of trust.

During the interaction, the team shared information and ideas regarding production practices for various non-traditional produce in their specific geographic locations.

“Farmers from Malali sideline, Crabwood Creek, have developed and adopted production practices (plant spacing, drain construction, planting methods etc) that differ from that of farmers in Region Three, mainly due to their heavy dependence on rainfall for irrigation water,” Warner explained.

Produce such as eddoes, cassava, sweet potatoes, plantains, pumpkins and watermelons are cultivated on a large scale in Crabwood Creek.

During the interactive session with the farmers, it was evident that they have a good appreciation for the production of quality produce.

SUPPORT Nevertheless, the group expressed the need for support in understanding proper post-harvest management practices, which will ensure that the quality of their produce is maintained; which, by extension, will ensure that safe and wholesome food is delivered to consumers.

The GMC officers assured farmers that requisite training in the area of post-harvest management will be done within months.

“Being aware of the importance of good post-harvest management practices, GMC is determined to instill these values in farmers countrywide,” Warner

reiterated.

He said visits of such nature will be used as a mechanism to promote the appreciation of good post-harvest management.

Further, Dookie implored farmers to use the exchange visit to establish and foster good relationships.

“What happened here today should not stop here,” Dookie told the more than 29 farmers, as he explained the importance of cultivating a relationship where experiences can be shared.

He told the farmers that though the GMC had facilitated the visit, they should now be in a place where “if you have a question, you can pick up the phone and call another farmer and they should be able to help you out.”

The farmers from Parika said they were impressed with the way farming is done in Crabwood Creek, especially with regard to the scale of production and utilisation of the large expanse of land for large-scale production.

This exchange visit followed the first one that took place last October, where farmers from Region Six visited farms in Parika, Region Three.

General Manager Ida Sealey-Adams affirmed that plans are in place to replicate these activities in other regions in 2019. She further stated that the GMC has been utilising various mechanisms to increase the capacity of its farmers over the years.

“Exchange visits have been tried and tested worldwide among farming communities. Oftentimes, the learning process reflects the different stages in the adoption hierarchy, where the creation of awareness must be followed by an interest in the practice. This commonly leads to changes in the way of thinking and a subsequent translation of ideas into action, thereafter adoption,” Adams explained.

She added: “Admittedly, this process is not immediate. It, however, requires openness and continued dialogue.”

This, Adams envisaged, will take place between the farmers and the GMC. The end result of this should see the adoption of good farming practices and better quality produce for markets.

PSC pledges to ‘call a spade a spade’ AMID the deepening division at the Private Sector Commission (PSC) over political statements, the body on Saturday defended its recent stance, saying it will continue to advocate for the respect of the Constitution.

Last week, PSC’s Secretary Komal Singh cautioned the Commission about its “perceived political stance,” saying that “it has exposed itself and its member to a charade of negative comments from the public.” Singh, in a correspondence to the Executive, said the commission’s relationship with government and the opposition has been questioned, not just once but on several occasions, even as he underscored the importance of maintaining amicable relationships with the leaders.

A section of the commission has repeatedly criticized government since the controversial passage of the No-Confidence Motion in the National Assembly last December.

On Saturday, the PSC said its Council met on Friday and unanimously agreed that it is the duty and responsibility of the Commission to represent not only the interest of the business community, but the overall interest of the country and its people in addressing matters of public concern.

It said it will do so without fear from or favour to any political party, whether in or out of government.

“The Private Sector Commission recognizes and will defend the democratic right of any of its individual members to express their views publicly, as they deem fit, on any matter of their choosing and will defend their right to do so,” it stated.

According to the PSC, the record would show that it has always spoken out in defence of democracy, as an advocate for the respect of the Constitution, for compliance with the rule of law and for the stability of our country.

The Private Sector Commission will continue to do so, it stated.

“The Private Sector Commission will continue to speak openly, frankly and truthfully on any and all matters which impact upon the economic development, good governance and political stability of our country. The PSC will continue to call a spade a spade,” it assured.

As a national institution, the PSC

said it must stand by the Constitution, law and order and good governance.

“The PSC’s status and values are derived from its responsibility to take the lead and not be distracted by persons or organisations that set out to achieve the opposite to our values.

“History must record that we stood for the correct principles of law and order and compliance with the Constitution. The PSC stands strong and united in its determination to continue advocating for the creation of a conducive and enabling business environment,” it said.

It said, too, that it has taken note that one of its members, Kit Nascimento, has been singled out and targeted for the views he expressed in a letter published in local newspapers on February 13, 2019.

While the commission said it fully endorses the “facts” laid out in Nascimento’s letter, its secretary has disagreed. “Kit, I do not support your position and I urge you (to) desist from doing so unless you get full council approval,” Singh said.

In his correspondence, he urged members to be mindful of how they treat with situations such as politics.

“I firmly believe that with immediate effect and until further notice, no sub-committee or any member or the EMC alone should address any issue that has to deal with the current political climate by themselves,” Singh advised, recommending that all political issues should now go to the full council before a decision is made to address any matter relating to the current impasse.

“While I do agree 100 per cent that we have a responsibility to make sure our leaders follow the constitution of this country, it is not within our mandate to be the leaders to make sure this happens. Our role (is) to continue to be impartial,” Singh told his colleagues.

“We have not been the leader in the past when we had constitutional breach, so why should we be the leader now? I am sure there was a very good reason in the past why the PSC was never so vocal,” the secretary reasoned.

He said if members of the commission are interested in preserving the PSC as an engine of growth, they should, instead, lobby government for a better business environment.

35 graduate from home economics course in Victoria

MINISTER of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, commended the successful graduation of 35 Home Economics students from the Foundation for Real Christian Education (FORCE) Victoria.

The graduation took place on Thursday, February 21, 2019, and saw the graduates receiving certificates in home economics, electrical installation, sewing, welding and motor mechanics.

Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, delivering the feature address, told the students that their graduation represented the successful completion of one phase and opened up possibilities for personal growth and advancement.

Bulkan said that the Ministry of Communities was pleased to be associated with the school’s programme, which he recognised as a promoter of the empowerment of young people.

According to a release, the minister said that the programme was consistent with government’s vision of empowering citizens from the community level or utilising the bottom-up approach method to development.

He expressed well wishes on behalf of President David Granger.

He revealed to the graduating class that February 20, 2019, would have marked the 96th birth anniversary of the first Executive President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Founder-Leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC), Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, who lived a stone’s throw away in the adjoining village.

Bulkan also opined that the Founder-Leader would have been pleased with the occasion which promotes self-reliance.

Minister Bulkan reminded those gathered that the policies and programmes under the APNU+AFC government were underpinned by the principle of the ‘”small man being the real man”- a people-centred approach to development.

It was this vision, he said, that prompted the government’s effort to restore functionality to the system of local government.

As such, Bulkan applauded the institution’s Principal, Desmond Saul, for his work over the last 15 years; he urged the graduating class to strive to achieve the best education, whether through academics or vocational training.

44 graduate from ICT programme

FORTY-ONE youths of Linden are now equipped with the knowledge needed to tap into Guyana’s frontier industries, now that they have completed the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Training programme, according to Marlon Pearson,

Senior Administrator of the National Data Management Authority (NDMA).

“There are lots of new frontiers that are opening in Guyana and what you have learnt today will help you to get into those places,” Pearson told the youths on Friday at the graduation ceremony for the ICT Training programme in Linden,

Region 10, (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice), which saw the youths receiving certificates accredited by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).

Present at the event was First Lady Mrs. Sandra Granger, who highlighted the importance of soft skills as well as the lack of Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) within schools and in the

society as a whole.

“Why do people still feel that HFLE should not be taught in school?

HFLE helps our young people to understand who they are and how they can protect themselves,” she noted.

The programme, which is spearheaded by the Office of the First Lady, provides young adults with training in the areas of In-

Pearson charged the youths to make information and communication technology a major part of their lives.

“Relearn, retool, re-evaluate your lives, place ICT in your life, make it a part of your life.

These are exciting times, we would like you to be a part of these exciting times,” he posited Pearson also applauded the first lady and the organisers of the Board and Industrial Training for the “STEM education evolution.”

Mr. Edson Emmanuel was named the Most Improved Student; Ms. Dacia Caesar graduated as the Valedictorian and Ms. Odeli Paul as Salutatorian of the ICT programme.

Valedictorian of the ICT programme, Dacia Caesar, in her speech, noted that the youths are the generation which must take technology to new, far-reaching dimensions.

“We are the ones who will bring solutions to environmental concerns. We are poised to start a new chapter in our lives,” she added.

Land for the ‘Champ’

THE Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Communities, Department of Housing, began to shower the country’s latest boxing champion with gifts, presenting Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen with a plot of land as a means of recognition for his February 15 heroics, when he defeated Derrick Webster to become the WBA super middleweight ‘Gold’ title-holder.

Allen had made a courtesy call on the Minister within

the Ministry of Communities, Valerie Patterson-Yearwood, but as it turned out, it was not just another ‘photo op’.

The minister, after the two had exchanged all pleasantries, told Allen that the nation was profoundly proud of his achievement, after which she made the announcement of the Government’s generosity.

Allen, visibly overjoyed, thanked Patterson- Yearwood and the Government

of Guyana, adding that since his return to Guyana, he is overwhelmed by the love shown by not only Government officials, but alsi from everyone.

He said that randomly on the streets, or wherever he goes, people would stop and congratulate him on the win and wish him well in the future.

The 33-year-old Allen pointed out that Guyanese generally put aside their differences and embrace their

own whenever someone does something monumental to bring positive recognition to the country.

Sobers: Hetmyer will Over 100 horses on show be next Windies great today at Rising Sun Turf Club THE legendary Sir Garfield Sobers says that Shimron Hetmy­e r will be the next great West Indies player. Sobers made the comment at a function called an ‘Evening with Sir Gary’ at the Barbados national museum.

Sobers said: “I like how this boy plays and he will be the next great batsman for the West Indies.”

Hours after this comment was made, Hetmyer celebrated by scoring an unbeaten 104 against England in the second match of the Colonial Medical Insurance Cup at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

The Guyanese thrilled the crowd including Sir Gary as he took apart the English attack, taking the Windies to 289 for six off their 50 overs.

He struck 104 not out off 83 balls with seven fours and four sixes. Hetmyer got his first half-century off 47 balls and completed his second off a further 35 balls.

Such was the brute

force of his display; he scored 97 runs in front of the wicket and only seven behind. He was particularly strong down the ground hitting 42 runs in the arc between mid-off and midon.

Born in Berbice, Guyana, Hetmyer is a World Cup winning captain of the West Indies Under-19 team of 2016. Inspired by his father Seon Hetmyer, Shimron picked up the bat at a tender age of 11. Since then he has never looked back. His initial apprenticeship started off at the Young Warriors Cricket Club in Berbice.

He represented West Indies at the Under-19 World Cup in 2014 as well but managed three single digit scores out of the five games that he played in that tourney. Even his first-class debut was far from memorable as he managed scores of zero and four in both innings against T&T. However, destiny gave him a second chance and this time he was meant to marshal the troops in the Under-19 World Cup and he responded with crucial fifties in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the 2016 edition en route to the silverware.

Sri Lanka defy the odds to seal historic Test series win over Proteas PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (Reuters) - Sri Lanka’s historic 2-0 Test series victory over South Africa had seemed somewhat fanciful when they arrived in some disarray and on a long losing streak, but leave as the first Asian side to win a series in the country.

South Africa had whitewashed Pakistan 3-0 at the start of the year and were on a run of seven home Test series wins in a row, dating back to 2016.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, had been whitewashed 3-0 at home by England at the end of 2018 and then axed captain Dinesh Chandimal after losing successive away series in New Zealand and Australia - during which

they lost three out of the four Tests contested.

In South Africa, they were missing injured talisman Angelo Mathews and had coach Chandika Hathurusingha reportedly at odds with his own board after being removed as an on-tour selector.

Dimuth Karunaratne, captaining the team in the series, said the disappointing tours in Australia and New Zealand had laid the platform for their success in South Africa.

“Those two tours were really tough and we learnt a lot of things,” Karunaratne said. “After that I think the players wanted to do something better for the team and for themselves as well.

“They realised quickly what to do and what not to do (in South Africa), stuck to the basics and started to enjoy their game.

“I want to tell the younger players especially that they did really well. They all put their hands up at different times and did a really good job for me.”

BATTING WOES Sri Lanka won the series despite first-innings scores of 191 and 154 in the two Test matches, after which the South African batsmen could not capitalise on good batting wickets.

The only concern for me is first-innings batting, so we have to make sure that we do better,” Karunaratne admitted. “All the time we were behind the game but we came back hard. The bowlers did a great job to keep us in the game.”

Karunaratne admitted the enormity of their achievement was just setting in.

“It’s a great feeling for me and the team. It’s not easy when you come to South Africa, so to win the series 2-0 is brilliant.

“It’s been a lot of hard work, but the guys did really well and enjoyed it a lot, which is why I think we created history.”

Sri Lanka stay in South Africa for five One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 matches, starting on March 3.

Poor shooting first quarter; Guyana go down 53-93 to Paraguay GUYANA suffered a 20-point blowout (53-93) against Paraguay in the opening game of their FIBA AmeriCup 2021 pre-qualifiers campaign in Tunja, Colombia last Friday.

Already shorthanded without the services of AEK Athens power forward Delroy James, who had to miss the tournament due to not having his Guyanese passport renewed in time, coach Junior Hercules’ men struggled in the first quarter where they scored just one point, as compared 27 by Paraguay.

Despite challenges the Ramballi/Mahadeo Under-17 tournament was a success NOT many cricket competitions are being sponsored in Essequibo and in particular for schools; yet I was indeed heartened by the initiative taken by co-sponsors Harrischan Ramballi and Yog Mahadeo of the Mahadeo Foundation.

In fact, generally, cricket in the county is quite dormant. I have had the privilege, though, of witnessing the majority of matches in the competition, which began in November 2018 and concluded on February 20, 2019. It was earmarked for secondary schools in the Region.

Mr Ramballi was very passionate about introducing a competitive atmosphere within the cricketing community as well as seeking to formulate a developmental path for budding young cricketers in Essequibo. In this regard, sponsors were acquired for the seven secondary schools where the players received uniforms, gear and in other cases free transportation to the matches.

The preparation of pitches was primarily done by Mr Ramballi with assistance from Mr Sam Bacchus who facilitated the use of the Imam Bacchus ground for several matches without compensation. The Affiance Number 1 and Reliance Sports clubs were also instrumental in providing invaluable support to the success of the tournament.

While I was impressed with the thought process of

introducing such a competition; much more is needed especially by the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) whose presence at the games was a disappointment. I was of the firm belief that with the collaboration of the ECB, its paid coach should have been working with the schools at various periods. This did not materialise and from my observations, there were youngsters who seemingly were playing a competitive match for the first time.

In such instances, they were uncomfortable with the gear, some were clueless about the rules and field-placements while others it seemed needed prior motivation which a coach could have done. There were also technical deficiencies in all departments including a few of the bowlers who had suspected actions.

Generally, though, there was a genuine commitment from the players who were eager and confident to display their talent. The tour-

nament had a buzz about it which, upon reflection, had similar vibes as when I competed during my time at secondary school.

There were instances too whereby some players had to be debarred from participating because they were not attending school regularly, yet they wanted to play. Next year I am sure those defaulters will be on the school’s register with maximum attendance.

Notwithstanding the challenges of an inaugural tournament, it fulfilled the objective of having competitive cricket being reintroduced into the education system and getting the players interested with the aim of seriously pursuing a career in the sport.

I therefore envisage that national Under-15 all-rounder Sheldon Charles will ascend to greater heights since he was stunningly the most outstanding player.

He exhibited his maturity while excelling with both bat and ball. Other exciting

prospects included Arian Doodnauth, Renard Ramroop and Kamesh Lall - batsmen with good techniques and temperament, Raj Ramballi is a promising leg-spinner while Dreshawn Phillips and Alex Ally have proved to be exciting fast bowlers with genuine pace and rhythm.

It is the expectation therefore that ECB, along with other stakeholders, will facilitate these players’ progress in the sport through camps, continuous coaching and more competitions.

Credit therefore to the sponsors and the Department of Education that the Ramballi and Mahadeo Foundation Under-17 tournament was successfully executed and has created opportunities that will further enhance the future of a core of very talented young cricketers. (Elroy Stephney)

Gentle hits 93 to lead defending champions to another win SEVENTEEN-year-old Afruica Gentle scored a blistering 93 to lead defending female champions Mae’s Schools (Secondary Division) to their second win in the Georgetown leg of the Forbes Burnham Foundation/National Sports Commission (NSC), Al Sport and Tour Promotions 28th Annual Easter Term School Windball Cricket Championship.

When action continued last week at the National Gymnasium, Mae’s Schools defeated the Saint Mary’s High School by 68 runs.

Led by Skipper Gentle, who smacked 13 sixes in her

93, the defending champs raced to 141-2 in their five overs.

Saint Mary’s, in reply, were restricted to 73-3.

Earlier, the Bishops’ High School got past the Richard Ishmael Secondary School by five wickets.

England eye one coach for all formats after Bayliss steps down - Giles (REUTERS) - England are almost certain to have one coach in charge of their test, one-day international and Twenty20 teams after Trevor Bayliss completes his stint later this year, director of cricket Ashley Giles has said.

Bayliss, who has been in charge of England since 2015, will step down following the home Ashes series against Australia in August and September, and Giles said he was not in favour of splitting coaching duties going forward.

“I’m about 99.9 percent sure that I want one man to do that job in the future,” the former England spinner told BBC’s Test Match Special podcast.

“The last thing we want is a football-style mentality where a guy comes in, brings his whole backroom staff with him, and the whole structure falls apart.

“I think consistency of communication is really important.”

Giles, who took over from former test captain Andrew Strauss in December, did not rule out the possibility of a home-grown coach replacing Australian Bayliss.

Peter Moores was the last Englishman to coach the national team in all three formats, from 2007 to 2009 and a second stint from 2014 to 2015.

“We’ve had one lead English coach in 20 years, and he’s done it twice. It’s a pretty sorry state of affairs for our coach development department,” added Giles, who coached England’s limited-overs sides between 2012 and 2014.

The 31-year-old Johnson led Guyana to four consecutive West Indies Professional Cricket League (PCL) Regional Four-day titles in the last four years and with Guyana sitting comfortably at the top of the current table, a fifth title in 2019 seems certain.

Johnson has represented Guyana in 107 first class matches since making his debut against Leeward Islands in 2004. He also featured in 67 List ‘A’ matches and 14

Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) president and CWI director Conde Riley told a stunned audience of Rotarians, at a dinner at Hilton Barbados on Thursday night that the matter was dealt with by chief executive officer Johnny Grave, who made a decision without consulting the board.

“Before the president or the board could do anything, a decision was made by our chief executive officer. It never came to the president. It never came to the board. He (CWI president Dave Cameron) does not want to say this, but I know he was very upset about this.

“The president wrote and said, why did this not come to the board?

The board had no opportunity because our chief (executive officer) made a decision without consulting the board,” he said.
