In welcoming the gathering, UG’s Principal and Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivelaw Griffith vouched for the relevance of the institute, stating that it would address Guyana’s food management and preservation issues. “We know that Guyana is a producer of much food in many categories.

But when we ‘peel the onion back’ we’ll find that the four pillars around which food security revolves --- availability, access, utilisation and stability--- we’re not as strong in those pillars as we would like.

“We produce a lot of food but we waste a lot of food because it’s not processed, it’s not canned. The logistics do not enable us to move food from easily across Guyana and beyond Guyana. So there’s an imperative revolving around dealing with the four pillars in way that we have not, as a university, done before,” the professor stated.

He added that it would also help to gather and provide useful information so

that policy makers can be guided by “evidence rather than anecdote”; extend education and set Guyana on a “green” development pathway.

“This institute is part of the university’s contribution to the green state of enabling us not to neglect agriculture by doing

the instruction, doing the research, by doing the advocacy along with other entities, domestic and international, in that respect,” he said.

FOOD SAFETY Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister, Noel Holder in his keynote address, said that

the launch of the institute will offer much for the areas of agriculture, health and education.

By Svetlana Marshall AMID much pomp and ceremony, and in the presence of hundreds of persons, President David Granger challenged the people of Mahdia to transform their economic landscape by diversifying their economy, as he declared Mahdia a town.

Established in 1884, Mahdia, located in the Potaro-Siparuni Region, is renowned for its massive gold reserves though in recent years there has been a drop in production among small scale miners. On Thursday, as he addressed residents and those who travelled from other parts of the country to witness the historic event, President Granger said it is time Mahdia expands its economy to include manufacturing, agricultural production, and commerce

He noted that once there is a turning around in the local economy, the commercial banks will establish a presence in the town.

Gov’t commissions $827M road network in Mahdia

Ronald Bulkan and Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally; along with a number of local and regional officials.

During a ceremony to mark the declaration of Mahdia as a town and to simultaneously commission the multi-million dollar internal road network, Minister Patterson said the project is indicative of government’s commitment to the continued infrastructural development across Guyana at a standard that aims to drive focus beyond the routine rehabilitation of road works.

“This $827M project is significant, the Region has seen drastic changes over the past two and a half years, with major advancement geared towards ensuring safety and efficiency of the roadway,” Minister Patterson told residents.

The project includes the rehabilitation of several bridges, the installation of a reinforced concrete rigid pavement with curbs, a network of reinforced concrete drains and culverts, complimented by road safety elements, inclusive of road markings and signage.

In the not so distant future, he said safety features of the road will be further enhanced with the installation of speed bumps and fifteen solar street lights.

“This 8,243 foot roadway along with other works within Region 8, such as the road from Mahdia to Denham Bridge, Mile 78 to Mile 96, Brian Sucre junction to Mahdia, Mahdia to Konawaruk, shows my ministry’s commitment to providing safe road access to community residents and to commuters in Region 8 alike,” the Public Infrastructure Minister posited.

Noting that the road is important to Region 8, he said it serves as a link to the world’s highest single-drop waterfall – the Kaieteur-- and at the same time provides access to the wealthy gold and diamond mining lands and links indigenous communities.

“We have chosen to focus our investments in solar and wind energy technologies because it could significantly reduce energy costs for all Guyanese. Minister Patterson also used the platform to announce other plans for the Region under his ministry.

“In 2019, a sum of $105M was allocated for the rehabilitation of the road from Karasabi to Paramakatoi. Rehabilitation of the road from Hill Foot straight out to the airport in the first phase, then onwards to the new housing scheme in the second phase, which I understand is also the proposed location for the new hospital.”

“Further, my ministry in conjunction with the Ministry of Business will be upgrading the Mahdia to Pamela Landing corridor.

He disclosed too that the ongoing works along the Bartica-Potaro corridor is near completion, in addition to the road from Mahdia to Denham Bridge.

Additionally, contracts were awarded for the structural analysis on both the Denham and Cassandra Bridge. “We have also made a submission for a one-year routine maintenance contract of the Mabura to Mahdia corridor and, last but certainly not the least, we will be retrofitting the bridges to concrete,” he added.

He reiterated that the execution of these projects is a strong indication of the government’s dedication towards improving and creating a positive impact on the lives of all citizens in Guyana.

While there is still more work to be done within the region, he said government remains committed to ensuring completion to a standard that is second to none.

Minister Henry also drew attention to the need to support and develop young entrepreneurs, while identifying opportunities for innovation in agriculture. She urged: “If we are to effectively create and disseminate knowledge on nutrition for safe, productive and sustainable societies, we need to develop our youth, bring them into the conversation and mechanics as it is the youth who will live with the consequences of hunger, poverty and climate change if these threats are not adequately addressed and mitigated.”

Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Ruben Robertson presented a detailed outline of the

financial assistance being provided by the organisation for the institute. To fund a feasibility study, US$50,000 was contributed by the FAO while another US$99,500 was given to conduct socioeconomic studies on the impacts of climate change on the local agriculture sector.

“FAO’s mandate is to ensure that malnourishment; food and nutrition security and hunger are fully addressed,” he said, adding: “We expect that through this partnership, the university will be able to integrate food and nutrition security and climate change in its programmes which over time, will be able to provide the kind of data and evidence-based information that will contribute to informed actions and policies.”

Equity in development STAYING up-to-date on current affairs, Guyanese would have noted a distinct difference between the equitable, fair, and evenhanded manner that the APNU+AFC administration approaches national development, and the politically polarized, ad hoc, and uneven way that the former regime undertook projects.

While the current government assures that all Guyanese communities – including hinterland areas – benefit from national programmes and initiatives, the former PPP masters paid attention only to areas housing their supporters, the capital city of Georgetown, and politically lucrative regions of the country.

At the last post-Cabinet briefing, Minister of State Joseph Harmon announced, among other initiatives, the awarding of a contract to build a state-of-the-art surgical operating theatre at the Suddie Hospital in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. The construction of that facility, which will be completed in 4 months, will allow residents of the region to have access to high quality surgical and medical care. Therefore, no longer will the residents of that region have to travel to Georgetown in order to get surgeries, at great financial cost to themselves, and medical suffering and trauma

to patients; the service will be right there.

The $41 million contract was signed on October 18, between the Regional Democratic Council of Pomeroon-Supenaam and the contractor-- Builder’s Hardware & General Supplies. At the signing ceremony, Regional Chairman Rupert Hopkinson said that he is satisfied that the region will finally benefit from a state-of-the-art operating theater. Hopkinson pointed out that as part of the region’s budgetary allocations, the timely request was made for a necessary operating theatre some time back. Approval, however, was granted this year.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson, who was present at the occasion, emphasised that while there is always the need for high quality work, there is also the need for local employment, as such, she urged the contracted company to employ as much local labour and skills as possible.

It is now clear that the Suddie Hospital will soon be capable of offering surgical services comparable to those available at hospitals in Georgetown. This is an example of the equity between the hinterland and the city, as promised, and now being delivered by the government.

Notable, too, are many of the other decisions taken by government that were announced by Minister Harmon at that briefing. Minister Harmon said Cabinet had approved the awarding of seven multi-million dollar contracts by the procurement entities and the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), intended to benefit outlying communities.

Among them, in Linden, a new Regional Democratic Council (RDC) building will be constructed. Minister Harmon said that the contractor – SKRN’s Engineering and Associated Limited – will provide consultancy services for the design and supervision for construction of the office at a cost of $41.3 million. This development has been much needed for some time.

The New GPC Inc. has been awarded a contract of $117.9M for the supply and delivery of medical equipment. Also, a contract valued at $26.5 million was awarded to Advanced Environmental Solutions Incorporated for rehabilitation of the landfill at Esplanande, New Amsterdam, East Berbice/Corentyne. Additionally, a $45 million contract was awarded to Industrial Supply of Guyana Incorporated for the supply and delivery of a brand new

garbage truck.

Another contract totalling $71.8 million was awarded to Massy Technologies Limited and Andrews Enterprise for the supply of stationery supplies for the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Clearly, government is focussing attention on development of the entire geographic area of Guyana, not just on the coastal strip. The administration aims to raise the standard of living for all Guyanese, regardless of where they live, and irrespective of their perceived political affiliation.

The statements by government regarding those projects follow declarations of the distribution of much-needed firearms in the Cayuni-Mazaruni region, and the drilling of 8 water-wells in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo region, earlier this month.

Evidently, the administration is dedicated to developing the entire country-- all 10 regions of it-- not just Georgetown and the coastal areas.

This is a most welcome turn of focus, a notable and commendable trend, and the correct approach to developmental emphasis.

CCJ is about justice wherever it is to be served

IT is written in the Good Book: “That what comes out from a man’s mouth defiles him”.

We venture not to be theologians, pastors, or an authority in the interpretation of the Holy Scriptures.

However, in common parlance, such a well-known quote would appear to mean that whatever is spoken is a reflection of the heart, and its intention, and therefore we are judged by such content which is often characterised by practical actions.

It needs no re-stating that the mental psyche of the Peoples Progressive Party/Civic, that was nurtured when it returned to Office in 1992, and which became

its instrument of governance during its twenty -three plus years in office was one that treated Guyana, and all its constitutional institutions, as its personal properties, and which had to obey its will.

Among the tactics used to ensure compliance had been bullyism, subtle threats, and the well-known mechanism of spite. One remembers the now infamous Jagdeo cuss down of the local media, branding them as “carrion crows” and “vultures’’, and the disrespectful statements made to the persons of the late former president, Janet Jagan, and the business magnate, Yesu Persaud . Here was a leader, intolerant of dissenting views, and the opinion of others. It was either Jagdeo or the PPP/C’s

way, or no other.

In fact, the well-known political blue print of control came of age, and was a pervasive fact of PPP/C governance and rule. There was also the perception that some sections of the Judiciary had been afraid to rule against the then government, lest it courted its displeasure.

One would have thought that given this largely dictatorial style of governance, which had been underpinned by a policy of institutionalized racism, and other socio-tragedies which caused this country to lose its international credibility and respect, that Jagdeo would have learned its bitter but self-informative lessons.

His recent public statement that the Caribbean

Court of Justice(CCJ) “risks its credibility if it does not overturn a decision by Guyana’s court that President Granger’s unilateral appointment of a chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission(GECOM)…” In a public tirade, he went on to describe the Guyana Appeal Court’s ruling as a ‘’travesty’’.

All these statements are direct attempts to, especially, call the credibility of the Region’s final court into question; its integrity, and its independence. Further, these are attacks that are considered not only slanderous of the court’s distinguished judges, but by extension those judicial members of the Guyana Court of Appeal.

These are not altogether

surprising, since they are spoken from the mouth of a former head of state/government, who is still peeved and pained [that] his third-term bid [was] overturned by a decisive CCJ ruling. In fact, the latter is a constitutional case that should never have been brought to court, originating from an unknown citizen, purporting to do so on behalf of Jagdeo and his party.

This was a clear instance of Jagdeo and his party attempting to use the court to annul a constitutional amendment that had already stipulated that a President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana was not entitled to more than two terms. It is ironical that this now Leader of the Opposition had been president at the time of such

a change to the nation’s constitution. It was an unmistakable example of a grab, and lust for further power.

It is instructive to note that although Jagdeo did not offer any opinion on the court’s ruling when the judicial decision had been ruled, there were grumblings about the ethnic composition of the court that came from his opposition party. We have no doubt that this was a clear and unambiguous continuation of the mental political psyche of a former political administration which saw everything solely through the lens of race, and which recent abysmal attacks on the CCJ marked another See page 7

Stop looking for ways to attack our oil industry

THOSE of us interested in the oil and gas sector deserve some clarifications on Charles Ramson’s recent statements regarding the size of our offshore blocks.

Ramson says that the blocks are too large and don’t allow us to “aggressively pursue an exploration and discovery programme.”

But I don’t believe anyone paying attention to Guyana would say that the exploraFrom page 6

milestone inherent in such a dangerous and unfortunate outburst.

Further, these statements-- misleading, ugly and deformed and designed to bring the region’s court of last resort into disrepute—reeks of the traditional, patented, dictatorial style of this former leader, and supported by its usual bombast of subtle threats.

Jagdeo must be reminded that the CCJ, the Caribbean Community’s highest judicial body, to which he assented this country’s membership, was not constituted on the basis of race, regional parochialism, or designed to make decisions based on political expediency.

Neither does he have the right, of any kind, to be discourteous and disrespectful to its judges, whose rulings have continued to build and contribute to the steady growth of Caribbean jurisprudence. Lest it be forgotten, the CCJ is about justice wherever it is to be served.

tion hasn’t been aggressive enough! It feels like there is a new discovery announcement every other month, which means that the big producers are aggressively pursuing exploration.

And while Ramson says the blocks are too large, a look at other “frontier” blocks (meaning that there are no prior discoveries there) shows that our blocks are not unique. Canada, Morocco, French Guiana, Suriname, South Africa, New Zealand and others have all created blocks of similar sizes.

The idea that the blocks are too large for companies to actually explore does not match with some of the data ExxonMobil has released on its exploration.

Almost 40,000 sq km of data has been gathered across 7 blocks. Most of this data has been in the form of 3D seismic surveying, which is better and more expensive than 2D, which means Exxon and others are sparing no expense. Exxon has also

announced that exploration will continue in 2019.

Say what you will about Exxon and other international companies, but two things are for sure: these companies are the only ones capable of doing this type of surveying, and they have every incentive and desire to get as much value as possible from the offshore acreage they’ve been award-

ed. Finally, Ramson seems to think it would be better to have smaller blocks. But I ask, do we not remember why these blocks were drawn the way they are?

Our offshore blocks, and the Stabroek block, were drawn to help define our international maritime borders.

This block, and the energy activity inside it, helps us to refute other countries’

claims to our territory.

Instead of attempting to find new and different ways to attack our oil industry, we should all be working on ways to harness the economic activity this industry brings to create long-term economic growth and a diversified economy.

Auditor General called in to probe Duncan’s alleged overspending

THE Board of Directors of the Guyana National Newspapers Limited is engaging the Audit Office to probe claims of overspending by the company’s General Manager, Sherod Duncan.

Mr. Duncan is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. In a statement in response to a page 21 Stabroek

News article of Thursday October 25th captioned: “Six weeks on… Sherod Duncan still ‘on leave’ from Chronicle” the GNNL board said it is pleased with the interest being shown in the operations of the Guyana Chronicle.

“The board is of the view that matters such as the one at the heart of the article referred to would be best ad-

dressed internally. The Board also feels that, as a senior employee, Mr. Duncan would have paid some attention to all of the clauses of his contract of employment, particularly clause 10 which deals specifically with the subject of confidentiality,” Director Mervyn Williams said in the statement on behalf of the board.

However, he said having regard to the publication of certain “inaccuracies and Mr. Duncan’s engagement with the media, the GNNL believes that some clarity is necessary.” Williams said Mr. Duncan is currently on administrative leave. “That would remain the case until the completion of an inquiry into allegations relative to

his stewardship of the company. This is a decision of the Board of Directors of the GNNL.” According to Williams, the allegations were widely published in the media following the unofficial release of confidential company records. He said the inquiry into that unofficial release has been completed and the report is with members of the board. Duo in court for attempted robbery at Bourda Market TWO men were jointly charged after they appeared on Thursday before Magistrate Dylon Bess, for the attempted robbery which occurred last Sunday at Bourda Market.

Kester Arthur, 34 of Nelson Street, Mocha, East Bank Demerara and Rondel Cummings 23, of Pike Street, Kitty, denied the charge which states that on October 21, 2018 at Bourda Market Georgetown, they attempted to rob Julian Mcalmon.

Police did not object to bail but asked that the defendants be given a substantial amount and also that conditions be attached. The defendants were released on $75,000 bail each by the magistrate on conditions that they report to the Alberttown Police Station every Wednesday. The matter was adjourned to December 6, 2018. Reports indicate that an armed security guard, who was manning the Bourda Market businesses, observed three men between Robb Street and North Road acting in a suspicious manner.

As he was approaching the men, one of the suspects reportedly whipped out a handgun and pointed same at the guard, who instinctively discharged his weapon several times at the gunman. The bandit identified as a miner collapsed a short distance away and an unlicensed .32 pistol with six live matching rounds were retrieved from next to him.

He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted.

Elderly Corentyne woman dies from drowning THE post mortem conducted on the elderly mother of three, whose body was found floating in a trench in Albion, East Berbice, Corentyne on Wednesday afternoon, has pointed to the possibility that fowl play was involved.

The autopsy conducted by Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh, stated that 73- year-old Samdai Samnarine called “Aunty Pato” died as a result of drowning, compound compression to the neck and trauma to the back of the head.

With the conclusion of the autopsy, investigators are following up closely on every lead and looking into possible motives for the woman’s demise. The news from the autopsy has the family in a state of shock even as the body was handed over to them for funeral arrangements. Relatives Samdai Samnarine have confirmed that Samnarine, who had left to visit a doctor in Tain, never reached her destination and are baffled as to how she ended up at Albion; a few villages away.

According to information received, the woman left home at approximately 16:00hrs on Tuesday to visit the doctor and never returned. Relatives disclosed that Samnarine would usually suffer from seizures.

After she did not return home, the family made several checks at various locations on the Corentyne, but to no avail. Her body was discovered floating in the Albion Estate’s main drainage canal, north of the public road. The discovery was made by a passerby.

An alarm was raised and the police arrived promptly.

When contacted, ‘B’ Division Commander (Ag), Paul Langevine said the investigating team is still actively engaged in the investigation.

At the time of discovery, blood was oozing from her nose and mouth. She leaves to mourn her husband and three children.

Gov’t intensifies programme to teach Manaderin WITH an annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate between nine to 10 per cent for some 30 years, China has quickly become the second largest economy in the world.

This is just one of the reasons the Government of Guyana has placed greater interest in ensuring that more Guyanese begin to learn the language, which has the potential to become the most widely-spoken in the world.

Director of the Foreign Service Institute, Ambassador Ronald Austin, told the newspaper that Mandarin classes are now being taught to public servants more actively.

The classes take place every Wednesday at the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Training Centre on Camp Street and are being taught with the help of the Confucius Institute of the University of Guyana (UG).

“I think what people are recognising is that they have to prepare for a world in which Mandarin will be one of the main languages…China is a big trading power. It is the second largest economy in the world.

Carvil Duncan freed of GPL fraud charges

THE charges against Former Director of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc., Carvil Duncan was on Thursday dismissed after Senior Magistrate, Fabayo Azore found that there was insufficient evidence.

Duncan was joyful as he made his way out of court as the $27.7 million fraud matters against him were dismissed. Magistrate Azore in her ruling stated that there was not sufficient evidence to convict Duncan of the offence and the prosecution has failed to prove the element of the offence.

She also noted that the transaction was not illegal since Duncan was authorised to do so and as such the prosecution failed to prove that the act was unlawful. The particulars of the charge stated that Duncan had conspired with former Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO), Aerswar Deonarine to commit a felony – that is to say between May 7 and 8 at Georgetown he conspired to steal GYD$27,757,500, property of GPL. He was represented by Attorneys-at-law, Glenn Hanoman and Everton Singh-Lammy. Duncan, a former director of GPL, was charged jointly with Deonarine for the

unapproved transfer of approximately $27M to their personal bank accounts from the PetroCaribe fund. The government had asked the police to investigate Duncan and Deonarine and it was reported that the men paid themselves without authorisation.

The discoveries of the suspicious transfers were made by independent auditors who were probing an account which held proceeds of oil shipments taken from Venezuela. It was while tracking payments to GPL that auditors unearthed the strange transactions.

Police had issued an arrest warrant for Deonarine who fled the country just after he was placed on leave. He had promised to return all of the money, but has failed to do so. He has also failed to return to Guyana to face the courts.

After the case was dismissed, Duncan’s lawyer said that he was pleased with the way the court handled the matter. In the year of 2016 Duncan, was also charged with conspiracy to steal $984,900 from GPL but the case was dismissed by Magistrate Leron Daly after the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence.

Containers of rice rejected by Panama returned

FOUR of more than 30 containers of rice have returned to Guyana after being rejected by Panamanian authorities due to false labelling, alleged corruption and collusion, a Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) source said.

The matter is also being investigated by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) and persons were reportedly questioned.

Reports indicate that over 30 containers of rice

were rejected between the months of August and September 2018. The containers upon inspection by Panamanian authorities found that it contained parboiled rice instead of white rice which was requested.

SOCU’s probe was triggered by a complaint from Co-Chair of the Rice Producers Association Action Committee, Jinnah Rahaman. Rahaman in his complaint to the Commissioner of Police Leslie James, calling for an investigation

into the matter, said almost two months ago, Guyana’s most lucrative rice market, Panama suffered a major challenge after authorities there rejected a number of containers at the ports.

Rahaman said it was found, from samples, that the rice was not in conformity to the agreement Guyana signed.

Reports indicate that the Panamanian authorities, in checking other containers, found that the rice appeared to be of the wrong quality and this was the same in

UWI to honour Shadow in special tribute at graduation ceremony THE University of the West Indies (UWI) joins the national and regional community in mourning the passing of Winston McGarland Bailey, ‘The Mighty Shadow’, one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most prolific singers/songwriters.

Bailey was scheduled to be conferred the degree of Doctor of Letters, Honoris Causa, for his contributions as a musical composer at the UWI’s morning graduation ceremony this Saturday at the UWI St. Augustine Campus. Earlier this year, Mr. Bailey was nominated and he graciously accepted the University’s offer for the conferral of the degree.

It will be presented at Saturday’s ceremony, in special tribute to him, UWI said in a release.

Vice-Chancellor of the UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles said, in his reflections on Mr. Bailey, “There is no doubt that ‘The Shadow’ was superbly gifted with an ability to extract from the base of society extraordinary creativity and intellectual energy which he returned to source with; an endless supply of ripping social justice lyrics and a compelling baseline that bombarded the base of the belly. THE calypso fraternity has been thrown into mourning following Shadow’s death early Tuesday morning. Bailey, who celebrated his 77th birthday on October 2, died at a hospital on Tuesday morning after ailing for some time and suffering a stroke on Sunday.

Bailey won Road March titles in 1974 (Bass­man) and 2001 (Stranger) and the Calypso Monarch title in 2000 with “What’s Wrong With Me” and “Scratch Meh Back.”

He also won the International Soca Monarch title with “Stranger” in 2001.

Bailey was also awarded the Hum­ming­bird Medal (Sil­ver) in 2003 for his contribution to culture.

GRPA to lobby gov’t to adopt Sexual and Reproductive Health policy

THE Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA) will soon lobby the government to adopt the Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) policy in the new year, as part of the organisation’s mandate to advance SRH in Guyana.

In 2015, it was reported that the GRPA in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), was working on a Sexual and Reproductive Health policy. Looking forward at the agenda of the GRPA for 2019, Executive Director, Renata Chuck-A-Sang highlighted: “We’re going to try to get the Sexual and Reproductive health policy - that’s been in the parking lot for the last four years - adopted.”

She said that this policy is of key importance, particularly in the context of the work the GRPA does.

According to her, “It will open up a lot of services for persons to access, particularly in underserved areas, and it will give clarity to how the government and its agencies should behave with regards to SRH services.”

The GRPA is a sexual health and reproductive health service provider in Guyana. The non-governmental organisation also tackles various societal ills: including gender-based violence, bullying and the stigma attached to SRH and mental health.

The organisation also does advocacy work and strives to make people aware that comprehensive sexuality work exists and should be delivered. The body also interacts with the government to improve the sexual and

reproductive health environment in the country.

In addition to lobbying for the adoption of the policy, in the coming year, Renata related that the body aims to improve access to abortions, by getting more physicians trained and certified to deliver the service, to get more clinics licensed to provide the service and to basically raise the awareness in the general sphere that abortion is legal and persons have a right to access it.

The GRPA will also continue to offer all of its usual services. The GRPA recorded one of its highest levels of service volume in 2017, registering a 78 per cent increase in total services (261,423) and a 61 per cent increase in S&RH services (188,542) relative to 2016 (117,351).

This is a continued upward trend in the last five years from 2013 to 2018 with an increase of total services of 176,361.

In continuing its work however, Renata noted that culture continues to be a challenge. “This is because SRH is a bit of a taboo people are unwilling to discuss this openly,” she noted. This problem is exacerbated when within the health system there are those who are unwilling to provide information and services on SRH. To this end she said, “So we have to work on two fronts: within the system and outside of the system.”

Man killed by drinking buddy at Timehri FIFTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Vernon Cummings of Ice House Road Timehri, East Bank Demerara is now dead while his friend, 41-year-old Phillip Solomon, also of the same area, is in police custody following a fight during a rum drinking spree.

The men, who were friends, both worked as labourers in the area. Sources in the community said that the men, who have been friends for years, usually consume lots of alcohol and on Wednesday they were doing just that while teasing each other.

At some point things got out of hand while they were on the docks in the area and they began fighting. Both of the men armed themselves. Cummings picked up a paddle and Solomon, a metal pipe.

They both dealt lashes on each other with the respective items and Solomon then lashed the deceased to the back of the head. The Guyana Chronicle was told that the men would normally assist the farmers in the area to load and offload their produce.

Police at Timehri have since arrested Solomon in connection with the murder.

Police sources indicate that the incident took place sometime around 17:00hrs on Wednesday.

Jagdeo bats for bootleg, pirated materials

OPPOSITION Leader Bharrat Jagdeo believes that Guyana is not prepared for the “revolution” that would come with the implementation of copyright laws and has given support to persons who utilise and distribute bootlegged and other pirated materials.

Speaking on Thursday at his weekly press conference, Jagdeo sought to address President David Granger’s recent announcement that an Intellectual Property Rights

Bill will be brought before the House during this session of Parliament to deal with Guyana’s lack of proper copyright legislation.

Jagdeo’s position received criticism on social media but the former President said the disagreement is expected and he would not change his stance on the matter.

“I know I’m going to be hammered for this, but that’s how I’ve always approached it,” he maintained.

The call for updated

copyright laws in Guyana has been a longstanding one from players in the creative arts industry, who have over the years seen their works cheaply re-distributed without them benefitting.

According to Jagdeo, the change would affect businesses that trade in pirated materials, including the multiple push cart CD and DVD vendors, as well as citizens who would now have to pay more for original materials.

“I hope that people understand what this would

Jagdeo also alleged that only “a couple of people” would benefit with the implementation of the legislation, notably those in the cable environment.

Questioned on how the absence of copyrights laws would affect local artistes, Jagdeo said local artistes and performers “should get a special position” where their work is concerned. He added that when in Government, work was being done to give local artiste some level of protection.

“We were working on a model where we could protect locally produced material. So we protect the copyrighted material for local artistes and we have those enforced, removed from the shelves, etcetera, and then wait until the appropriate time, until such time in the future that people can afford to pay for the copyrighted material,” he said.

Jagdeo also contended that international agreements on copyright laws do not protect small countries like Guyana.

“It may not sound the most enlightening position, given that you have international treaty and stuff, but half of those treaties don’t protect us smaller countries. They don’t protect our interests… and so we now are pushed to protect other people’s copyrights and they don’t protect our trade rights in other parts of the world,” he contended.

MACHEL Montano is one of the brand ambassadors for CARIFESTA XIV, which was launched on Tuesday night in Trinidad and Tobago.

The launch featured a wealth of cultural performances that delved into soca, chutney, dance, spoken word, and of course, Trinidad and Tobago’s invention, the steel pan, performed by the National Steel Symphony Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago with Conductor, Mr. Akua Leith.

PSC preparing disciplinary action against Dookie WHILE the Police Service Commission is in the process of initiating disciplinary proceedings against Deputy Superintendent Motie Dookie, the officer has returned to the job.

The latter was confirmed by Police Commissioner, Leslie James on Thursday during a press conference at his Eve Leary office.

The commissioner did not go into the details surrounding the return of Dookie to the job and which department of the force he is presently stationed. However, the Guyana Chronicle has been able to confirm that the embattled former head of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit is now posted at the Force Control Room, otherwise known as the nerve center of the organisation.

Contacted on Thursday, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Paul Slowe, told the Guyana Chronicle that he wishes not to comment on the recommendations of the Police Service Commission but did indicate that the commission is in the process of instituting disciplinary proceedings against the officer.

Dookie was at the centre of the alleged smuggling of whiskey on the Corentyne Coast.

This all began in December of 2017 while Dookie was slated to be in Georgetown but

was found to be a passenger in a bus that was ferrying some thirty cases of whiskey. It was reported that he told a party of policemen at a roadblock that the alcohol was being taken to Georgetown for the Guyana Police Force old years Night ball, something the force publicly denied.

The driver of the vehicle subsequently cleared Dookie of being knowledgeable of the items which were in the bus at the time.

The Guyana Revenue Authority was also involved in the matter as the beverage was considered unaccustomed goods. On the night in question, Dookie was confined to a police station in Berbice but vanished and then returned by sunrise the following day.

The developments led to Dookie requesting his annualised leave which was granted to him by the force. Upon his return, he was sent to head a police sub division but that move was reversed after concerns were raised. Dookie was then sent on leave in the public’s interest.

Former Commissioner of Police acting, David Ramnarine had said that Dookie was needed on the job given the absence of a number of officers who were either on leave or retirement.

According to Chief Constable, Andrew Foo, the former mayor is being provided with four security personnel while the current mayor has eight, this is while the City Constabulary is understaffed by over 150 officers.

“The former mayor has one lance corporal and three security guards. The current mayor has eight in terms of personnel, in terms of body guards as well as

Code of conduct for bus operators ‌colour coding, mandatory training for conductors floated

THE United Minibus Union (UMU) has agreed to propose to its membership the adoption of a draft code of conduct for minibus operators countrywide.

Representatives of the union and several associations met on Wednesday with Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin, to discuss aspects of the proposed code as well as concerns raised by consumers pertaining to the daily operation of minibuses, a release from the Ministry of Business stated.

Minister Gaskin told the bus operators that it is important for the union, police and government to work together to address matters related to minibus operations in the country. Highlighting grievances expressed by consumers, Ms. Muriel Tinnis, Director of the Consumer Affairs Department within the Ministry of Business, told the minibus operators that there continues to be complaints of speeding, touting and overloading of buses.

She pointed out that one of the major complaints received, was that of overcharging, particularly within routes. There were also complaints that operators for cer-

tain routes, charge passengers a higher fare at nights. In response, Mr. Eon Andrews, President of the United Mini Bus Union, said many of the concerns expressed by consumers are justified. He expressed optimism that the code of conduct will address the issue of touting and overloading.

He added that it is important that the legal issues be separated from the consumer issues, since the Guyana Police Force is mandated to maintain the law, adding that many of the complaints are legal matters.

Andrews recommended mandatory training for conductors, as well as colour coding for busses. The idea of a code of conduct was also supported by Mr. Dennis Chesney, President of the Berbice River Branch Mini Bus Owners Association.

Chesney said his union has already implemented some aspects of the code and he hopes all operators will follow suit.

Superintendent Dennis Stephens, Deputy Traffic Chief, also attended the meeting.

He underscored that the problem of touting persists because minibus drivers and conductors encourage it.

He urged the operators to utilise the

Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin in discussion with minibus operators and their union leaders model used by the Berbice Association, which he said, has been very effective.

Superintendent Stephens also pointed out that congestion continues to be a problem because of the large number of buses and the limited parking space available. The code of conduct addresses issues such as customer service, health and safety, licensing and compliance and the general

operation of buses. The union will discuss the draft of the code of conduct presented by the ministry with its membership and sign on once there is consensus.

Meanwhile the Consumer Affairs Department is working on an implementation plan for the code of conduct. The department will continue to engage the union on matters that arise.

FIRST Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger on Wednesday received a courtesy call from the Deputy Chair of the Department of Development and Special Studies of the Medgar Evers College, Mr. Ivor Baker. The institution is a senior college of the City University of New York.

During the meeting, which was held at the Office of the First Lady at State house, Mrs. Granger and Mr. Baker discussed areas of mutual interest including, literacy, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and robotics.

“We will look at the possibilities of working together on my youth development initiatives for the coming year,” the First Lady said.

The First Lady’s youth development initiative is a remedial learning programme, which is offered free of cost, in the communities of Buxton and Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

OCAL makeup artist and founder of Ultimate Image Beauty and Image Cosmetics, Janica Sandy, made Guyana proud last weekend by copping third place at the highly competitive Battle of the Brushes competition at the Vancouver International Makeup Trade Show (IMATS)- the world’s largest event of its kind.

Sandy, who is currently studying for a Professional Diploma in Makeup Artistry for Television and Film at the John Casablanca Institute (JCI), Vancouver, Canada, moved to Canada last September to start school and will graduate in three weeks.

“I decided to further my studies because years ago I decided one of my goals is to work in film and to become a celebrity artist and with lots of encouragement and support, I was able to pursue higher goals to improve my career, skills, services and professionalism to more effectively meet the growing demands in the beauty world,” Janica told The Buzz.

In addition to the third place award, Janica won a hamper and will be featured in the IMATS international magazine.

After graduating from JCI, Janica plans on returning to Guyana to share the experience she has acquired over the past year. Her experience at school and in the competition has also opened up the opportunity for Janica to acquire a few short film contracts due to her skills. She also plans on expanding her beauty supply store after returning to Guyana.

“Makeup artistry is evolving with new trends, innovations, applications and tips, creating a more competitive market. So I enrolled in this one year programme to further my skills. It’s a complete programme that covers all areas of makeup, like health/skin care, beauty, decades makeup and fashion, body painting, film scripts and breakdown, injuries and scenario for film, makeup and prosthetic application, website building, photoshop and lots more,” she said.

Janica said that packing up and moving to another country was a tough decision especially since she had to leave her business behind. But she explained that she believes in taking risks and the experience will help to make her a better professional once she returns home.

The private sector also has a noose around the common man’s economic neck

I PURCHASED a pair of glasses some years ago as demanded by nature.

The service was great and I paid and was told that when I have any problems with the frame that I should return for a backup service.

This week, I returned to the same Middle Street location since I have noticed a loose connection on the arm of the frame. The info desk called a pretty young lady to address my concern.

She listened then replied in flawless recitation that “if in the process of attending your frame anything happens to your frame, we are not responsible. That is our policy, kindly tell me if you are ready for us to fix your frame.” I had two options, to get really angry or to find humour in the sinister ridiculous. I choose the latter. The policy sounded like something one would hear in the script of a Mafia movie. After some exchange, I realised that the back –up service talk left out this part that if I return to the Optical service to tap into that service, if their technician screws up it’s my fault. I did see the same frame in the store, its cost was almost doubled.

The commercial culture in Guyana changed a long time ago and not exactly for the better, but it’s time we pay attention to practices that are dragging much-needed finances out of our blue colour pockets.

Some years ago, I bought a desk chair from a popular Main Street store. Within a month, an arm on the chair was broken, so I went back to the same salesperson.

He took me to what he described as the ‘returns room’ and told me to see if I can find a similar chair, then I can ask one of the guys there to take off the arm and I can have it. Of course, I didn’t find a similar chair, and after some searching around, I had to throw the chair out. The same occurred with a stove I purchased from a Water Street

store. No spares available, no backup services. The intention is to possibly buy a new one of the same. Costly can be the risk, even fire risks, of using home appliances with defects that can’t be repaired. I have sympathised with friends who couldn’t differentiate MDF or HDF from actual wooden furniture and floors. Is it the fault of customs charges that they almost cost the same in the stores, or no price index, or just merchant greed? During the 2005 flood, I had colleagues who then realised that the wood grains on their furniture were pasted on, over a product that turned to mush when soaked by the flood waters.

The so-called good old days were not actually good, the masses were either Public Servants, Policemen, in the Defence Force, on the waterfront or salespeople somewhere.

Salaries and housing were a nightmare. Dropouts never made it so ‘School Leaving’ people died from ignorance and we blamed it on superstition. However, lots of labour-based jobs filled in, and store-sold items that back-up services were offered for, that world is gone. The aspect that can be recaptured is the latter mentioned, as it applies to that which serves to protect from waste and exploitation the earnings of the low-income worker, they are the greater part of our population.

But they have skills and aptitude for skills that can add substance and value to our consumer market, once managed. My children are out of the school system, but my grandchild still is.

I could never understand the absence of any sane and organised system in relation to the lack of school book identification for the following school seasons.

In this area, the old days’ memory kicked in. You passed exams you received your report certificate and a

book list of what text was needed in the coming term.

Books were handed down from older siblings, relatives or family friends. As a parent, I lived in a time when within the first month then would the teacher request a textbook. The main bookstore, Austin’s, either did not receive a required Booklist from the ministry to have the text availablesometimes the books were there, sometimes one had to wait but strange enough the pirate facilities always had whatever text was required in photocopies. The problem with a child relating to books with coloured tables and reference visuals, now copied in smudged black and white (a managed system is required to transfer a coloured range of visuals to acceptable grey scale that pirates have no patience with, and cannot easily produce). No awareness exists to how badly photocopied books impact on some students, who have seen the originals in the store.

Perhaps there are viable reasons for consumer contempt, but what is inflicted passes by without comment because we do not examine social injuries at varying levels and weigh any consequences.

No authority, NGO, or interest group pays attention, and the government entity is not expanded and empowered to incorporate these significant areas, but we have to or we will soon have no choice.

Young Guyanese create ‘Jack Victor’ film –– First-cut screening set for Sunday

USING the heightened tensions spurring from the border controversy between Guyana and Venezuela, a group of young Guyanese have come together to create an independent film called ‘Jack Victor’.

According to Elson Lowe, the creative mind behind this project, “The film is about a Guyanese spy [Jack Victor] who’s trying to find out what Venezuela’s intentions are,” and noted that it is set on the context of when Guyana first discovered oil and tensions between the two neighbouring countries heightened.

Though based on real events (i.e., the border controversy), the film uses fiction to make the movie a bit more appealing to its audience.

Given that the controversy is now at the hands of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Lowe also said: “We thought this is a really great time to bring out this film and

address this topic and educate Guyanese.”

But aside from edifying Guyanese on these current affairs, the film also seeks to create an experience that lets Guyanese know what is possible in the film industry, according to Lowe.

On Sunday, October 28, the first-cut screening of the movie will be held at the Queen’s College auditorium from 18:00 hours. It stars local musician, Shoghi Boodhoo, alongside a host of other local, young talent.

Producer of the event, Pernell Christie spoke with The Buzz ahead of Sunday’s first-cut viewing to talk more about the film and its production.

Christie said, “The movie showcases what you can do with real events if you only add a little creativity in it.” Explaining further, he highlighted that Lowe was able to take a real event and tweak it just a bit to make it into something people can enjoy while learning.

In creating the movie, however, funding was a bit of a challenge, according to the producer. But that didn’t deter the young people involved and Christie noted that this is hopefully the first of a series of Jack Victor films that will be created.

“Within our first year of work, we’re looking to showcase how our crop of talent is going to improve,” he said, while adding that the intention is to foster the development

of the industry in Guyana.

“All in all, the movie and event [the screening] go hand-in-hand to showcase the will of a few Guyanese to take it to the extra level, by stepping into what we’re not usually known for [and] opening up an industry in what we can actually thrive in,” he shared.

Tickets for the regular screening cost $1,500 while the VIP tickets cost $2,500.

Under 19 tickets cost only $800.

Chow Pow Comedy Jam returns to Garage AFTER a long hiatus, that was too long, the much-loved Chow Pow Comedy Jam is set the return to the Aubrey Barker Road Garage Bar and Grill, beginning from tomorrow night, starting at20:00hrs.

The going promise is that it’s going to be a night that’s “so funny it guh hut yuh”, for the cost of $1,000. The event is organised by well-known local comedian Kirk “Chow Pow” Jardine, who is happy to see the return of his signature event.

“The Jam has been the cornerstone of open-air comedy shows in Guyana.

Since its inception, it has attracted a wide cross-section of Guyanese who not only bask in the ambience of the Garage Bar and Grill, but also enjoy the opportunity to dress as they like, eat, drink and laugh out loud at the same time,” Chow Pow said.

The Chow Pow Comedy Jam has its roots in Linden, with the first show being held at the Lichas Hall in Linden. Encouraged by the support for the show, Jardine took it to Georgetown.

“It was sold out two days in advance.

On the night of the show, people brought furniture from their homes just so they could sit comfortably and laugh,” Jardine recalled.

That same year he continued to host the shows at the Garage Bar and Grill.

“It progressed to the point where we even brought in Jamaican Owen “Blacka” Ellis and Barbadian Trevor Eastman to perform,” Jardine recollected.

Now that the show is back, Jardine said Linden will not be forgotten.

“Work is in progress to take the show back to Linden during the Christmas Sea-

son,” he said.

Jardine emphasised that the show is kept relevant by utilising a mixture of both seasoned and new upcoming performers so that the show doesn’t become repetitive.

“Producers have been using one set of comedic actors,” he commented. “When you look at the comedy shows that are staged across the country one would believe that there are just a handful of good stand-up comedians in Guyana, who have been repeating the same routines with the same faces and that is what we do our best to avoid.”

According to Jardine, that’s just not the direction the Comedy Jam has ever gone in, it always tries to keep things fresh.

“If you go back to past Comedy Jams you will find that the cast is always different. What you will find is a diverse group of entertainers whose talent complement each other to wow the audiences,” Chow Pow said.

Aside from Chow Pow himself, this go around, the cast of the Comedy Jam includes regulars like Jermaine Grimmond, Kwasi Ace, Uncensored King Michael “Credit” Ignatius, Mark Luke-Edwards, and even Junior and Senior Calypso monarchs Jovinski, Onicka Joseph, reggae artiste Alabama as well as social media personality Melly Mel. A special segment of the programme is expected to be dedicated to women.

The Garage will take on a theatre setting for the event. Jardine also sought to reassure that security will not be an issue at the venue.

“We have never had an issue of security at the Garage, but just in case, we are prepared,” Jardine assured.

$3M injected into second Turbo KO tournament launch SENIOR football action returns under the Turbo Brand with the launch of the company’s Knockout tournament organised by the Petra organisation.

The second annual Turbo programme, a brand under the Guyana Beverages Inc. (GBI), was launched at the company’s head office at Diamond yesterday.

Over $3M has been tasked for this year’s tournament which begins on November 5 at the Ministry of Education (MoE) ground.

This year, the 16-team tournament is anticipated to see stiffer competition since the grand prize money has been increased from $500 000 to $800 000.

In addition, the second-place finishers will pocket $400 000, third $200 000 and fourth $100 000.

Camptown are the defending champions of the tournament and they will see competition from the other 11 teams that were part of the recently-concluded Limacol football tourney along with the Under-20 squads of

Elite Clubs - Den Amstel, Fruta Conquerors, Buxton United and Western Tigers.

Present at the launch was co-director of Petra, Troy Mendonca, along with GBI’s representative Samuel Arjune.

Arjune noted that his company was happy with the way the inaugural edition of the competition played out; hence their support for the second edition of the competition.

According to Petra’s Troy Mendonca, the group is committed to the development of the sport, hence the embarking of yet another tournament.

“We will continue to give our support through our relations and our skill set and continue to give support to football in general,” Mendonca added.

Chanderpaul receives honorary doctorate from UWI FORMER Guyana and West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul yesterday collected his honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) St Augustine Campus.

The former middle order batsman, who has amassed a total of 11 867 Test runs in a career spanning 164 matches,

was among the persons honoured at the ceremony.

He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD).

Regarded as one of Guyana’s and West Indian cricket’s finest batsmen, Chanderpaul has plied his trade with teams like Derbyshire, Durham, Khulna Royal Bengals, Lancashire and Warwickshire.

In 268 ODIs, the lefthander garnered 8 778 runs at an average of 41.60 with 11 hundreds and 59 half-centuries.

Buxton, Better Hope to clash in ECCB Elizabeth Styles final … $450 000 cash and trophies at stake BUXTON ‘Carl Hooper’ Sports Club and Better Hope Cricket Club stormed into the final of the East Coast Cricket Board- sponsored Elizabeth Styles 40 overs tournament.

At the Friendship/Buxton Community Centre ground, the hosts were restricted to 184 all out in 28 overs. Openers Mervin Cato (28) and Devon Benjamin (27) put together 55 for the opening stand before Anthony McFarlane stroked a belligerent 41 at the back end of the innings.

Andre McFarlane (21), Clive Andries (17) and Kwesi Douglas (16) chipped in with useful scores but failed to capitalise on an ideal cricket pitch that offered some assistance to the Clonbrook Cricket Club bowlers.

Bowling for Clonbrook Cricket Club (CCC), leftarm pacer Travis Gilbert (3-36), Dion Ferrier (3-38) and R. Small (3-50) were the main wicket-takers.

Warne joins MCC World Cricket committee LEGENDARY former Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne has been appointed to the MCC World Cricket committee.

The committee is an independent panel of former and current players and umpires that can propose changes to the sport’s laws.

Warne replaces former Australia wicketkeeper Rod Marsh, who is stepping down after six years of service.

“It is an honour to have been asked to be a member,” said Warne, who took 708 wickets in 145 Tests.

“It is an extremely exciting time for cricket and I hope that I will have plenty to offer in discussion and debate.”

Ramphal receives BCB and RHTY&SC highest award OVERSEAS-based Guyanese Brian Ramphal recently received the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) highest award, Tribute to Hero Award.

Tribute to Hero Award is specially given to outstanding individuals whose contributions to Berbice Cricket have assisted the development of the game.

Ramphal, who lives in the United States of America and is the CEO of a major Itech company, earlier in the year donated $1M to the BCB to host two coaches’ seminars for 40 pre-Level One coaches, annual award ceremony, financial stipends for national players, educational posters for junior cricketers and a double-wicket first division tournament.

Meanwhile, at the simple ceremony held at the St Francis Community Developers, BCB president Hilbert Foster was loud in praise of Ramphal and Dr Tulsi Dyal Singh, who are the largest financial donors to the BCB. “Berbice Cricket in just a short span of eight months is on the move again and this is because total strangers like you came on board and offered support to us when we needed it most.

“Your $1M donation to the BCB allowed us the opportunity to host several programmes that have assisted Berbice Cricket to rise from the ashes. We would forever be indebted to you for your kindness and as such it is our greatest honour to present our highest award to you,” Foster said.

By Frederick Halley FORMER Berbice Under-19 player Krishnadat Ramoo, who captured the most wickets in his first season representing Hawaiian Arctic Cricket Club (HACC), was fittingly voted the Most Valuable Player when the Toronto-based club held its 2018 presentation, dinner and dance last Saturday night at Taj Banquet Hall, North York, Toronto, Canada.

Ramoo and batsman Azhad Amidon, who scored the most runs (278) in the season, were the main toasts, as HACC celebrated winning the Elite championship title an unprecedented seventh overall, having won six consecutive Premiere League crowns in the Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) - a feat that ended in 2015.

Ramoo, who captured 19 wickets from 10 matches, by far the most by a HACC player and third overall in the league which saw two players with 20 each, also tallied 162 runs with a highest score of 71. He was awarded the Fly Jamaica trophy for his fine efforts.

Among several other outstanding performers were Teshawon Castro who smashed a whirlwind 156 against Superstars in his lone innings for HACC and former Guyana Under-19 player Farook Hussain who did likewise with 106.

Former Guyana Under-19 fast bowler Keyron Fraser also shone. He captured 15 wickets at 9.53 runs apiece, placing eighth overall.

His fine effort included a match-winning performance of six for 17 versus defending champions Highland Creek in the semi-final.

BEL Air RUBiS registered their third straight win in the GCA Friends of Cricket 100-Overs U-17 tournament after a 56-run victory over the Georgetown Eco Champs at the Ogle Community Centre ground last Sunday.

Batting first after winning the toss, RUBiS scored 214-8 from 55 overs, while the Eco Champs, a developmental team, were restricted to 158 in 38.2 overs.

Daveanand Khemraj led the eventual winners with a game-high 54 runs. The number-four batsman started very watchful, but exploded towards the end, hitting three of his six boundaries off his last four scoring shots.

For the fifth wicket, Khemraj and Ravindra Samaroo 43 (3x4) put together 66 runs and the only other meaningful partnership was a second-wicket stand of 56 between opener Omari Lalbachan (20) and former national U-15 player Andrew Samaroo (25).

Review into Australia team culture due next week - CA

MELBOURNE, Australia (Reuters) - A review into the culture of the Australian cricket team would be made public next week and had not been delayed, the chairman of Cricket Australia (CA) said yesterday.

David Peever, who as re-elected as chairman for another three years at the organisation’s annual general meeting yesterday, said the report from the Ethics Centre would be released on Monday, after the CA board had discussed it with stakeholders.

“There has been no delay,” Peever told reporters. “We didn’t get a final copy of the review until this week.

“We have always said they will be released before the start of the international men’s summer, which is what is happening.”

CA commissioned the warts and all review of its organisation and the men’s team, after a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa earlier this year threw the team into turmoil.

Captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and batsman Cameron Bancroft were banned for their roles in the scandal, which prompted a mix of anger and schadenfreude, with media pundits and former players suggesting Australia had brought themselves undone with the aggressive way they played

the game.

The ball-tampering scandal was also seen as a watershed for the sport in Australia with CA launching the root-and-branch review and ordering a charter governing player behaviour.

Since the scandal broke, coach Darren Lehmann has resigned, while chief executive James Sutherland said he would step down from his role after almost 20 years in the job, although he said it had no bearing on his decision.

He will be replaced by former deputy Kevin Roberts.

Bravo retires from international cricket ahead of World Cup

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Veteran all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has quit all forms of international cricket just eight months before the ICC Cricket World Cup in England, bringing the curtain down on an absorbing career which saw him carve a niche in the shorter formats.

The 35-year-old Trinidadian, who also quit Test cricket in 2015, announced his retirement late Wednesday on the eve of the first semi-final of the Regional Super50 between Guyana Jaguars and Jamaica Scorpions at Kensington Oval here.

Bravo will feature in today’s second semi-final when his Trinidad and Tobago Red Force take on Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners.

“I want to confirm to the cricket world that I have officially retired from international cricket in all formats of the game,” Bravo said in a statement.

“After 14 years when I made my debut for the WI, I

still remember that moment I received the maroon cap before walking onto the Lord’s cricket ground, against England in July 2004. The enthusiasm and passion I felt then, I have kept with me throughout my career.

“However, I must accept that for me to preserve my longevity as a professional cricketer, I must do as others before have done, leave the international arena for the next generation of players.”

Despite steering Trinbago Knight Riders to back-toback titles in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in the last two seasons, Bravo has been repeatedly overlooked for international duty in the shortest format.

NATI, LC through to BCB/ Mogu Mogu InterSecondary final NEW Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) and Lower Corentyne Secondary School (LCSS) have advanced to the final of the BCB-sponsored Mogu Mogu Inter-Secondary School 30 overs tournament for schools in Regions Five and Six. NATI easily defeated J.C Chandisingh Secondary School by 88 runs in their semifinal at the Port Mourant ground while LC whipped the Upper Corentyne Technical Institute by eight wickets.

Batting first, NATI reached 180-8 in their allotted overs, with Garfield Benjamin hitting a top score 88, and Brandon Stewart 30. Jeremy Sandia claimed 3-25.

In reply, J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School were bowled out for 92 in 19.2 overs. Johnathan Rampersaud (32) and Lucas Arthur (16) were the two main scorers. Keith Simpson (4-12), Stephen Kamaladin (3-16), and Simon Naidu (223) did the damage for the winners.

Meanwhile, Upper Corentyne Technical Institute were bundled out for 126 in 22.5 overs. A. Hussain (37), Arvin Lall (21), and Rudy Jamladeen (19) were the batsmen with double figures. Jeremiah Felix took 3-9 and Leon Cecil 3-26.

In reply LCSS reached 128-2 in 19.5 overs. Leon Cecil made 42, T.Mahadeo 30 and Damien Cecil 23 not out.

The finals will be contested on Tuesday at the Cumberland ground.

The winner will then go on to play the winner of Region 5 for the overall championship.

Maloney, Thompson brothers for CMRC VETERAN racer and multiple-time group four champion, Mark Maloney, will spearhead the Barbadian team for the upcoming Ignite race meet of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC).

Maloney, who sits at the helm of the Rock Hard Cement Mazda RX3, is expected to come all out, guns blazing to try and defend his Group 4 title.

Having secured one win in Barbados, Maloney is eager to take the battle to the Guyanese duo of Mark Vieira and Andrew King, who both secured wins in round three earlier this year.

Mark Thompson is no stranger to the CMRC top step, having held the championship for two

years at the group two level in his Honda Civic.

However, after stiff competition in Barbados and Trinidad, he sits way back in third, behind Trinidad’s Justin Sanguinette and Marc Gill.

His brother Kurt is a competitor in the group three class, with several visits here but this time around, he returns to action in group 2.

The anticipated event is expected to see the culmination of the 2018 season of CMRC for the Groups 1-5 as well as the Superstocks and SR3 Radicals along with the local classes including the Superstock motorcycles.

The overseas competition will see drivers from Barbados,

Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), Jamaica and Canada as well as competitors out of Europe.

Tickets for the packed 27race two-day meet are on sale at the cost of $2 500; children $1 000 at the GMR&SC’s Thomas Lands office.

Tomorrow there will be time trials beginning at 10:00hrs in all the classes, followed by official races in the Street Cross Motorcycle, 125cc Motorcycle, Street Tuner, Choke Starlet Cup and Sports Tuner which will be 10 laps each, from 13:20hrs.

PALM Court has joined the growing list of sponsors on board with the staging of Guyana Softball Cup 8 which gets underway today at several venues across Georgetown and East Coast, Demerara.

At a simple ceremony, held at the Main Street, Georgetown entity, accountant Tiya Chung handed over a cheque for an undisclosed sum to Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) vice-president Ramesh Sunich.

OVER 20 local and overseas teams will begin the battle for supremacy today when the Guyana Softball Cup 8 bowls off at various venues in Georgetown and on the East Coast of Demerara.

Organised by the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA), the annual tournament has attracted participation of teams from Florida, New York, Canada and Guyana.

Information from the GFSCA revealed that all the necessary logistics are falling into place and the organisers are confident of a successful tournament.

Twenty-four matches are scheduled for today. Tomorrow the final set of preliminary games will take place along

with the semi-finals.

Matches will be played at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground, Malteenoes, MYO, YMCA, GNIC, TSC, Ogle and Enmore grounds.

The final day of action will start at 10:00hrs with the finals of the Over-45 and Over-50 and conclude with the Open final under floodlights at DCC, Queenstown.

In the 2017 competition, Ariel Speedboat XI defeated Boots All Stars in a closely-fought Open final, while Floodlights XI crushed Regal by nine wickets in the Masters final.

The event, which is organised by the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA), has grown to

become the most popular and well-attended softball cricket competition in Guyana.

While the organisers have not disclosed the financial rewards, Chronicle Sport was informed that a substantial amount will be handed over to the winners and runners-up in all categories.

Three gold pendants in the shape of a cricket bat will also be presented to the Most Valuable Player of the Open, Over-45 and Over-50 categories.

Johnson, Reifer propel Guyana Jaguars to Super50 final VEERASAMMY Permaul was rock steady and delivered the crucial winning runs which, together with skipper Leon Johnson and Raymon Reifer’s solid contributions and a decisive match-winning 130-run fourth wicket partnership, propelled Guyana Jaguars to the final of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Super50 competition.

Johnson registered his List A career best score and his maiden century (101) while Reifer continues to shoulder the middle-order responsibilities admirably and fashioned another impressive fifty that help to set up the victory over the Jamaicans in their day-night semi-final encounter at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, last night.

Permaul struck a six and then the winning boundary off the penultimate delivery off Gordon Bryan and sparked wild celebrations among the Guyanese as they registered a nail-biting one wicket victory with only one delivery remaining.

It was a very tense battle but the Guyanese, especially Johnson, Reifer and Permaul, displayed nerves of steel and supreme confidence in their own abilities to surmount all pressure and obstacles.

Guyana finished with 276 for 9 off 49.5 overs while Jamaica’s innings closed at 272 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs.
