Three dead –– including young couple in Vreed-en-Hoop accident

THREE persons are dead after a Toyota Premio motorcar slammed into a utility pole after overtaking a minibus on the Vreed-en-Hoop Public Road, West Coast Demerara on Sunday.

Dead are Deodat Mohan, 22, of Vreeden-Hoop, who was the driver of the vehicle PPP 4014, and passengers Reaz Barakat, 18, of Rumzeight Gardens, West Coast Demerara and Telisha Terika Singh, 17, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.

The passengers were in a relationship.

According to police, motorcar PPP 4014 driven by Mohan was proceeding east along the northern side of the Vreed-en-Hoop Public Road, allegedly at a fast rate, when he lost control and collided with motor car PHH 7894 which was parked on the said side of the road, before crashing into a nearby utility pole.

The pole was severed by the impact of the hit.

The driver and the female occupant were taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Barakat was transferred from the West Demerara Regional Hospital to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation in a critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Police have since launched an investigation into the accident.

The previous Sunday five persons died in Corentyne, Berbice when a car drove into a pothole and slammed into an incoming truck.

The five occupants of the car identified as Sabita Mangali 40, owner/proprietor of Sabita Immigration Services, Located at Maraj Building, Charlotte Street, Georgetown; her two sons Emanuel Mangali, 18 and five-year-old Ethan Ramjeet, as well as her secretary and friend Reshma Seeram, 38, and Dhanpaul Kishandayl, the driver, who only recently returned from the U.S., all died on the spot, reports say.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the five were heading to the Number 63 beach.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Power & Light Company (GPL) in a statement said the accident which occurred around 16:00 hrs on Sunday along the West Coast Demerara

The utility pole that was uprooted in the accident Public Road, caused significant damage to its network within the vicinity of Vreed-enHoop.

Customers along New Road Vreed-enHoop are without electricity.

“Significant restorative work inclusive of replanting poles, re-erecting transmis-

sion lines and replacing a high voltage transformer are required and will be completed tomorrow (today), Monday, October 23, 2017. As a result, the electricity supply will be restored upon completion of the aforementioned restorative work,” GPL said.

Former magistrate questioned for witness-tampering THE case of murdered Berbice carpenter, Faiyaz Narinedatt, has taken another twist over the weekend. A former magistrate and another person were detained in separate incidents for alleged witness-tampering.

Attorney and former magistrate Chandra Sohan, was on Sunday, October 22 detained and questioned by ranks of the Guyana Police Force’s Major Crimes Unit after witnesses in the case notified ranks that he allegedly approached them to give false statements.

Police sources have confirmed that Sohan was detained and questioned on grounds of alleged witness-tampering and was subsequently released.

Guyana Chronicle understands that the former

magistrate allegedly coerced witnesses to give false statements in favour of Marcus Brian Bisram in the ongoing Preliminary Inquiry into the murder of Narinedatt.

In addition, on Saturday, October 21, another male, said to be an eyewitness, was arrested by police and remains in custody for witness-tampering.

It is alleged that the man approached other witnesses to change their statements in return for monetary compensation. His arrest came to light after one of the witnesses made a report to the police. This publication understands that charges are expected to be laid against the accused soon.

The murder case has had its fair share of drama.

Marcus Brian Bisram trate Rabindranauth Singh recused himself from the matter. The matter is now being heard by Magistrate Charlyn Artiga.

Bisram was recently ordered to be extradited from the United States by New York Judge Peggy Kuo, to

face murder charges here.

He is the alleged mastermind behind the murder of Narinedatt. Bisram is accused of passing instructions to five others, namely Radesh Motie, Harri Paul Parsram, Orlando Dickie, Diodath Datt and Niran Yacoob to kill Narinedatt during a party between October 31 and November 1, 2016, at Number 70 Village, Berbice.

Narinedatt was beaten after he allegedly rebuffed Bisram’s sexual advances early November 1, last year.

It is alleged that Bisram was hosting an after-party for the Community Policing Group during which he reportedly made sexual advances to Narinedatt, who was present at the party,

but was rejected.

Reports are that Narinedatt was urinating when the Guyanese/US based businessman approached him and tried to touch his private parts. Narinedatt became angry, accosted the businessman and slapped him twice.

The businessman then reportedly ordered one of his bodyguards to “get rid of him,” and that he (businessman) “will deal with it.”

The carpenter was reportedly viciously attacked by the bodyguards and several others joined in beating him to death, allegedly in the presence of all at the party.

Awake sleeping giant –– President urges Region Nine farmers to expand focus on agriculture

REGION Nine farmers must begin to use creativity to market their products to ensure the region’s economy booms, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty, said President David Granger on Friday.

The President was at the time speaking at the Regional Agriculture and Commercial Exhibition (RACE).

RACE was held in Lethem, which was officially declared a town on Friday, as part of the town’s week of activities in celebration of the

historic occasion.

During a tour of the exhibition booths, President Granger told exhibitors, regional and municipal officials that much more needs to be done to return the region to an agricultural hub.

He reminded his audience that Region Nine is the largest region in Guyana and noted that there must be a plan of action for regional development, as he called for businesses to work together through the Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry and use it as a driving force to develop the regional

economy.

“We are opening the door to a new economic future for this great region,” said the head of state, who urged stakeholders to cooperate for the development of the region.

He noted that in many instances, infrastructure has been put in place, but elements are missing, thereby hindering progress.

“There is no doubt that Rupununi has the potential and I would like to urge that the region, central government and the municipal administration here work

to overcome some of those problems,” he said.

He also reminded those gathered at the exhibition that Local Government Elections (LGE) were not aimed at just placing a few people in office, but noted that the time is ripe to use the democratic elections to prosper economies.

President Granger made it clear that education remains a powerful tool in diversifying the agriculture sector. He alluded to the fact that many people are trained at the Guyana School of Agriculture and the University of Guyana, but have failed to use their education to advance the sector. “… we keep training people at Guyana School of Agriculture and UG, but where are they? Are they a part of the farmers, are they producing more crops and livestock in the Rupununi? Are they becoming bureaucrats? They still need the education, it is by education that you could augment production and produce more corn and cassava than your father or grandfather produced; it is by education that you can learn new techniques,” the President stated.

Breast cancer not a death sentence

-- early detection key to breast cancer outcome, survival - WHO

By Rabindra Rooplall MORE women are surviving breast cancer, but unfortunately thousands will still die from the disease, since living with it has not got much easier.

Cancer has been a major challenge to health sectors worldwide. Guyana, like other countries, has been battling to control the scourge by expanding its cancer- screening and sen-

sitisation efforts across the country. Treatment is also a major part of combating this disease.

According to Dr. Nyron Ramsundar, a government medical officer attached to the Oncology Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, more than 200 new cases of cancer have been recorded already this year.

Early detection in order to improve breast cancer outcomes and survival remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. This is the key message that is continually amplified by the World Health Organisation [WHO] when it comes to this disease.

Breast cancer is cancer that develops from breast tissue. Signs of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling of

the skin, or fluid coming from the nipple.

Data, published in the Ministry of Public Health’s Cancer Surveillance Report in 2015, suggests that between 2003 and 2012 breast cancer was the leading cause of cancer deaths in Guyana.

During the 10-year span [2003-2012] highlighted in the Surveillance Report, it was only in excess of 6,000 cases of the various cancers that were diagnosed.

The report sourced its information from the Cancer Registry, which garnered its data from both public and private medical institutions.

Based on the data available then, there were 1,090 cases of breast cancer; 1,014 cancer of the cervix cases; 865 cases of prostate cancer; 440 cases of colorectal cancer; 325 cases of cancer of the uterus; 240 cases of stomach cancer; 233 cases

of lung cancer; 219 cases of liver cancer; 212 cases of cancer of the ovary and 136 cases of lymphoma.

BREAST CANCER ‘WARRIORS’ October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and communication provider Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GTT) hosted its “Pinktober” benefit at Palm Court, Main Street, Georgetown, where they honoured breast cancer ‘warriors’ who shared their stories and struggles as breast cancer survivors.

All proceeds earned during the month, themed “Together we can make a difference,” was donated to the Guyana Cancer Foundation (GCF).

Marilyn Dewar, a music teacher, sharing her story, said: “The strength of a warrior is really revealed during a battle,” as she recalled that

on December 18, 2016, she was given confirmation that she had breast cancer.

“As anyone could imagine, it wasn’t an easy or simple message to receive.

But the warrior spirit was present,” she said. The support and guidance from her daughter and doctor were steadfast.

The teacher said she was given the choice of doing either a lumpectomy (a surgical procedure that involves removing a suspected malignant (cancerous) tumor or lump,) or a mastectomy (the removal of both breast tissue and lymph nodes: the surgeon removes the entire breast).

She bravely chose the latter. Marilyn said she read a lot and equipped herself well as she was determined to win the battle. She believes reading and learning about the diagnosis empowered her to fight a good battle.

And while the road has not been at all easy, Marilyn is grateful that she is still well off and in a good place.

The road ahead may seem long, but with the brave and courageous warrior spirit alive in her, Marilyn has successfully completed eight sessions of chemotherapy treatment and is in her fourth week of 25 sessions of radiation treatment.

She said family support has been one of her pillars of strength, since there is always someone with her for every session of her treatment. Her message to all women is to get screened and to be supportive to all women.

Meanwhile, Marketing Director of Edward B. Beharry & Company Limited, Anjuli Beharry-Strand, says the battle against breast cancer is one that requires strength, immense support and a resilient spirit.

Anjuli did not become a survivor after beating cancer -- she became a sur-

vivor from the time she was diagnosed and decided to fight it.

It all began a few months after Anjuli’s pregnancy in 2012 when she started feeling an itch around her left breast. Due for a mammogram, which she regularly took, Anjuli went to get screened and was cleared by the doctor as being perfectly healthy. However, a nagging feeling of uncertainty persisted, because, according to her: “Something just didn’t feel right.”

Deciding to get a second opinion, Anjuli travelled to New York to see a gynaecologist. It was there that she underwent several tests. “I didn’t suspect anything until they told me they would call,” she said.

“Nothing prepares you for that call.”

Armed then with the knowledge of her breast cancer, she knew she’d have to tell her family, so she called her daughter and asked her to come home.

Despite being terrified of what breast cancer could mean for her life, Anjuli was the one comforting her daughter when she was told the news.

It was not until her husband came home that she finally broke down and cried.

It was hours before she stopped crying, but when she was finished, Anjuli decided right there and then that she was going to fight cancer and everything was going to be okay.

Anjuli also did four rounds of chemotherapy and began losing her hair, eyebrows and eyelashes.

Despite it being difficult to get used to what was happening to her, Anjuli said that she decided to embrace it. When she started losing her hair, she was intent on not letting cancer be responsible for that. It had to be on her terms.

It was not long before Anjuli was faced with another hard decision. She had decided to get a double mastectomy, a surgery that would see both of her breasts being removed. Losing her breasts would prove a challenging period for her. As a woman, she said, one identifies strongly with one’s breasts and the womanhood it often represents.

Therefore, to lose them left her feeling “not normal.”

She held out hope that after her reconstruction surgery for her breasts, that she would once again look and feel normal. But when that did not necessarily work out the way she expected, Anjuli stated that she became very depressed.

“I never had trouble with my self-esteem, but I felt sad that I lost that part of my femininity. I knew I was a woman, I still felt like a woman, but when I took my shirt off, I no longer represented what womanhood was. That was a crushing thing, but I allowed myself to grieve. It’s important to allow yourself that,” she said.

EARLY DETECTION After her reconstruction surgery, it was two months before Anjuli could lift her then one-year-old daughter.

This is one of the reasons why Anjuli, with the support of GTT, encourages women to get to know their breasts and to get constant check-ups. “Early detection is key,” she said.

This fierce ‘Pink Warrior’ encourages all persons to educate themselves on the different types of breast cancers, so as to avoid misdiagnosis. Chemotherapy treatments are not suitable for all cancers and are tailored, she said. She also encourages and sees the need for more counselling and active support groups among cancer agencies, so that they could better help persons.

In sharing his story, Leslie Black is a man of strength that transcends the physical and this is embedded in his very spirit.

It is this strength that Leslie uses to commit his time and his more than two decades of expertise as an athletics coach, to push both himself and others to success. Leslie has dedicated much of his time to working

alongside the Guyana Cancer Foundation and he declares that this is something very close to his heart.

In 2012, tragedy struck Leslie’s family when his daughter died from Stage Four cancer. His family had first become aware of his now late daughter’s illness when she had begun spitting blood in 2008.

She was taken to various doctors and specialists and began treatment soon after being diagnosed with the illness. Unfortunately, the cancer continued to spread, leaving the entire family devastated after her untimely death.

Having had the experience of how cancer changes the lives of not only its victims but their loved ones, Leslie wants to encourage both men and women to ensure that they are getting their regular check-ups.

Most persons, he stated, would wait until something happens to them before they get a check-up and this can be dangerous, as often there are no immediate symptoms of the disease.

When his daughter became ill, Leslie searched for ways he could get involved in the fight against cancer and it was then that he began working with the Guyana Cancer Foundation. Every year since then, Leslie continues to offer his help and support to the GCF. Doing more this year, Leslie decided that his contribution in helping to spread awareness would be made by offering his experience as an athletics coach. The aim of the ‘GTT Pink Warrior’ was to help prepare persons interested in participating in the GTT 5k/10k walk/run.

Leslie met with participants for a half hour every day where he offered training free of cost. Leslie’s aim was not only to help these persons, but to create a lasting impact on the exercise habits of the participants.

Meet Rosaline Clarke, known to most as “Miss Rosie” or “Sister Rosie.”

She is a mother of three who learned some years ago that all of her siblings had been directly affected by cancer, two of whom she watched helplessly as they were consumed by the disease.

Rosie’s personal journey with this human scourge began just one year ago while on vacation in the United

States, visiting her 97-yearold mother.

SHARP PAIN It was on the third day after arriving in the U.S. that she “felt a sharp pain” in her left side breast. At first, she thought it was most likely a muscle strain caused by the luggage she had been hauling around, but after an examination she found that there was a lump in her breast.

Rosie’s eldest sister, who was present, encouraged her to remain calm.

It was then that her sister disclosed for the very first time that she too had been battling cancer in her left breast for just about two years.

Three weeks after returning to Guyana and seeking a second opinion, Rosie underwent a lumpectomy.

The initial report was that it was a cyst that had developed in her breast, but after a biopsy was conducted, Rosie was called in by the medical practitioners – she was strongly urged not to come alone. Yet, ever the brave soldier, Rosie went by herself, but she attests that she was not alone, as she said her faith and resolve in her God and Saviour walked beside her.

The news was not good: Rosie had developed cancer in her breast. Two options were placed on the table: remove the lump or remove the entire breast. Rosie had a huge decision to make.

She opted to remove her entire breast and avoid the rigours of chemotherapy she had learnt of from her eldest sister’s experience with the treatment. Rosie has since started her treatment using the “five-year pill.”

of falling into worry and depression, Rosie continues to beat the odds and has instead thrown herself thoroughly into serving her community through her local church, the Open Bible Church, in Queenstown. There, she serves as an usher and Sunday school teacher and assists in many of the church’s programmes for the immediate and surrounding communities. There, she too receives much support through prayer and fasting with other members and the leadership of the church.

“I wasn’t afraid… I wasn’t scared,” Rosie said of the initial days of her journey and battle against cancer.

lief kills and belief cures” and she chooses to believe in the power of God to heal her completely.

Rosie spends much of her time reading and doing research geared towards educating herself about the disease.

On any given weekend, Rosie can be found with her Sunday school class at their book club. On weekday afternoons, Rosie’s time is spent with her grand-daughter on the veranda of her Albert Street home, Georgetown.

Editorial Ensuring food security

IN every nation, agriculture should be top on the list of national development sector priorities, since it is about ensuring that citizens are afforded the opportunity of unhindered access to ready supplies of available fresh food of nutritional value. This translates into a well fed and healthy citizenry. But there is also a significantly important benefit as well: that agriculture as a well-managed, economic activity enhances the particular region/ community where such activity takes place, as well as being a central contributor to GDP. In other words, its contribution to national development is pivotal.

Guyana, like so many of its sister CARICOM member states, has a traditional history of agricultural activity, that has its genesis in the sugar plantation system. And along our very expansive coastal belt, cane-farming, whether as a private or state activity, is still very much in evidence. But there are hundreds of rice and coconut farms, and numerous examples of other-crops activities, as well.

It is because of this continuous activity through the decades, that Guyana for a while had largely been recognised as the food basket of the Caribbean, an accolade that assumed even greater significance for a period during our early modern political history with the Grow More Food campaign, as part of the Clothe, House and Feed the nation plan. Citizens, particularly those in Georgetown and its environs, were encouraged to plant ground provisions and other crops on every available land space around their homes and residences. Even public offices took part in this national food drive.

No doubt, that such a project did reveal what can be achieved, despite criticisms from the then political opposition of the day that later in government, introduced a similar national call, especially to farmers to “Grow More.”

However, despite its importance as a pivotal economic activity and contributor to national GDP and keeping the nation fed, national agriculture has continued to face national challenges. There are questions too, such as whether optimal use has been made of the country’s vast arable land opportunities – the hinterland; and the critical issue of diversification.

More important, is the question of food security, so vital to the growth and development of developing countries.

It is against this background that aspects of the nation’s agriculture will be highlighted, particularly the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) in-

troduction of its five-year Action Plan that centres primarily on transforming agricultural production in Region Nine.

The hinterland as an agricultural producer to the national food chain can be said to be under-utilised, given its vast land opportunities that have traditionally centred its produce on mostly ground provisions.

This explains why residents, within the wider hinterland, have lived a reliance on food supplies from the coastlands.

But this has been undergoing gradual transformation within recent years, with initiatives such as a Rice Beans Project, and spice cultivation in Region One. There is also fruit and peanut-planting at Aranaputa, Region Nine.

However, with the government’s introduction of a fiveyear Action Plan, the acceleration is under way to advance large-scale agriculture in a more diversified and climate-resilient manner.

The emphasis will be to transform agriculture in Region Nine, making maximum use of its vast arable land. A target area of 400 acres for this programme is to cater for acquaculture, livestock development, crops, and ruminants. This reflects the introduction of large-scale agriculture, or mega farms, into the intermediate and Rupununi savannahs; introducing eco-friendly and cost- effective methods. It also hints at diversification, taking the lessons learnt from the parlous state of the sugar industry which is debt-ridden, due to its unprofitability and other factors.

Even rice production, although recording annual record tonnage, has had its challenges, due to the unavalability of markets. This sector is now once again able to access international markets due to government’s intervention, as well as supplying material for value-added products.

That this intervention for expansion of hinterland agriculture is timely, cannot be over emphasised, given the challenges of seasonal rainfall and flooding that continue to affect farm production on the low-level coastal belt. It will usher in a raft of ground-breaking objectives, such as improving food and nutrition security and poverty alleviation, with the important ingredients of sustainable and integrated development of Region Nine communities.

There are other enabling factors to aid in the strategisation of agriculture in Region Nine: improved public and private sector linkages; promotion of a business-like approach to agriculture, enhanced food production, diversification, and

profitability.

This is indeed opening a new vista for the Rupununi and its communities, where the potential for bringing change to lives is now a reality. It is certain that this initiative will be replicated in other parts of the hinterland; but that it has commenced in the Rupununi is because of the huge land opportunities.

Although inaccessible, there is an ongoing road-building programme and upgrading of airstrips that will provide for interconnectivity in transporting agricultural produce from one point to another throughout this vast savannah, and to other locations as well. Three results are expected here: reduction of dependency on coastland food, selling surpluses and even competing with the coastland, in terms of prices of food sold to consumers.

All through our regions, there are current measures such as installation of pumps and upgrading of roads for access to farming areas, that are being taken to support making agriculture a sustainable and important socio-economic factor wherever such an activity exists.

It is evident that such a strategic plan, as outlined by the coalition government, has as its final goal the food security of the hinterland -- and by extension the wider nation. Let it be reiterated that food security, defined as allowing people to have “physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food” is a public good and a human right, in addition to being the underpinning of every community’s self- reliance.

Food security is the stimulator and engine of the economic production of especially developing nations. For apart from increasing the purchasing power of farmers who sell their marketable produce, it is an important foreign exchange earner -- It protects a nation and its peoples’ dignity.

With time, the Rupununi and surrounding hinterland and the nation as a whole, will become guarantors of this fact.

THE Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) wishes to register its disappointment that a candidate for the position of Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) was not arrived at by consensus as envisaged by the Constitution of Guyana.

The GAWL also finds it regrettable that the reason or reasons indicating the bases for which the names submitted were found to be unacceptable were not previously provided and expect that these would soon be forthcoming.

It is unfortunate that an approach which would have provided greater clar-

ity and transparency to this process of national importance was abandoned and in the circumstances, the GAWL urges that the process of constitutional reform be embarked upon at the earliest opportunity to address this and other issues.

I HEAR some folks talk about the Carter agreement and some tradition and norms on the selection of the GECOM chairman.

Any arrangements, agreements, compromise, or accords that violate the constitution are illegal. Enough of all forms of unconsti-

tutionalities that have pervaded our system for too long.

The opposition leader has obeyed the constitution. The president has also done what the law requires of him to do.

End of story.

What we should expend our collective energies on is devising a better process that will remove the unilateral

power from the president, ensure credibility and fairness in the electoral process and push for an amendment.

The constitution is clear. The President reserves the unilateral power to make this appointment, regardless of any list comprising angels, popes or saints.

Kwakwani lands to be regularised

-- more than 500 residents to benefit AS the Government of Guyana continues with its drive to ensure that sustainable, family-oriented communities are created across Guyana, the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) has begun working with the sixth community this year to regularise land usage.

Commissioner of that organisation, Trevor Benn, along with a team from the commission visited Kwakwani, Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice (Region 10) to initiate a process, which is expected to be completed in six months, to provide transports for lands that are already occupied.

The GLSC has already initiated similar programmes in areas in Bartica, Region Seven; Aranaputa, Region Nine; Port Kaituma, Region One; Mahdia, Region Eight; and Mocha-Arcadia, Region Four.

An approximate 1200 persons stand to benefit from the process. During that outreach Sunday, Commissioner Benn announced that based on the find-

ings of the visit to Kwakwani, a team from the Land Management Division of the commission will be deployed during the first week of November to set the wheels in motion.

“We will be assigning someone to the community.

They will be here to work with the [Neighbourhood Democratic Council] NDC in identifying these issues.

We have many issues and we won’t be able to solve all of them at once, but we will have the NDC identify one area and we are going to fix the issues there and then we will move on from there,” the head of the GLSC said.

The commissioner also said that the granting of titles to establish rightful ownership to deserving persons will help to improve their quality of lives and the status of their communities.

“The objective is to make sure that in a short space of time we can resolve the issues of land titling for all of you. I am surprised to learn that almost everyone in Kwak-

wani is without a lease.

That is depressing and we have to fix that for each of you. You cannot improve your lives if you do not have ownership to basic things like land. You cannot get a mortgage if you do not have the documents for the land,” he said.

Benn told residents that while the commission will be doing all that is within its power to ensure that the community becomes regularised, members also have a key responsibility to cooperate and to pay all outstanding dues so that the commission can continue with the execution of its mandate.

“You must follow the rules and for those who are entitled, regardless of who you support, once you are entitled, you will get your land. We will do a thorough investigation of the issues raised. These are very serious issues and we want to ensure that in the shortest possible time that we can deal with those issues and get you your titles. Unless you are prepared to work with us, then we cannot

get anywhere. We need to cooperate,” he said.

Member of the Board of Directors for the GLSC, Randy Storm, in brief remarks, echoed these sentiments, noting that while the commission will continue in its work to improve communities, residents must take ownership and be cooperative.

“This place has potential. I shall make every effort to see that you get some help but help is already on its way. They will be here the first week in November and you must stop the bickering and quarrelling among yourselves. We will not be able

to get anywhere if you do not stop. You have to help us to help you,” he said.

Chairperson of the Kwakwani NDC, Merna Adrian, in an invited comment, said that she is immensely pleased that the GLSC has hosted the outreach in the community and met with residents to listen to some of the concerns.

More importantly, she said, the community is thankful that a decision was made on the spot to send a team so soon into the area to start the process.

“From the part of the NDC, we will work cooperatively and I am going to try to get the community

to cooperate, so that we can do the best thing for everyone involved, but we are very happy to have the GLSC here today with us,” she said.

The team from the commission visited and met with residents in Chinese Lane, Staff Hill, Jonestown, Jonestown Two/ Airstrip and Kwakwani Park.

Overseer of the NDC, Clairasa Hohenkirk, also in an invited comment, said that the approach from the GLSC is welcome and the local government organ is pleased that the land issues will be addressed.

The APNU+AFC coalition government he stated, is committed to development, but noted that what is needed is investment.

“People have to put their money back into agriculture… that will turn your cycle of poverty away from hereditary poverty to hereditary prosperity.”

There must be innovation, he charged, noting that “we cannot continue doing the same things our parents and grandparents did 40 – 50 years ago. The world is moving ahead and we need to keep abreast with modern technology.”

Mayor Carlton Beckles said agriculture is synonymous with Region Nine and noted that the region cannot be developed without it.

“The vast amount of land space we have here and the fertility of the soil, enable us to produce the sort of fruits and vegetables. The Rupununi is the only place where I think that cows choose which type of mangoes it will eat,” said the mayor.

“That is not all, it grieves me every year to see those mangoes go to waste, while we import the tropical rhythm out of Jamaica.

Why can’t we can those mangoes and make mango juice or slice; cashew nuts, why can’t we have cashew nut farmers, farming similar to that of rice and then we can have a person processing the cashew nuts to export to North America, Europe and the Caribbean and even to Brazil. It will be fully organic,” Beckles continued.

REVITALISE CATTLE INDUSTRY The passionate mayor called for the revitalisation of the cattle industry in the Rupununi, but noted that the issue of rustling must be addressed.

He disclosed that during a recent meeting with U.S. Ambassador Perry Holloway, the Rupununi is slated to benefit from some Mustang horses.

“Comrades, we need to revitalise the cattle industry, we can be exporting beef to the Caribbean and other parts of this world because we are free of foot and mouth disease,” said Beckles, who also noted that farine, a main staple in Region Nine, must also be marketed better.

“We need to improve on the presentation of the products we are displaying, so that they will become marketable.

We have some lovely products here… look to labelling and packaging,” the mayor remarked.

Council (RDC) Agriculture Committee, Roger King, stressed the importance of agriculture to the development of the region.

“Agriculture is everybody’s business; it is all of us because it is what puts food on our tables, it is what we depend on for human existence. It is the most important aspect of our dear existence.”

King, like President Granger, said Region Nine is poised to lift itself out of poverty and noted that at the RDC, a plan of action is being worked on for regional development. Agriculture forms a critical part of the plan, he said.

“At the RDC, we are working on a plan of action for regional development; agriculture is an important part of that. We have developed the integrated sustainable agriculture development strategy for the Rupununi region that is part of our plans. It has everything that we need to do to move our agriculture industry from the level it is at from where we would like

of us here. Rupununi is open for agricultural development at every level and scale, but the small farmers are the ones that we have to treat with utmost precaution, the bigger companies or farmers will take care of themselves,” King stressed.

Large-scale farmers, he reminded, have the resources to lobby for their plans or proposals, but “our farmers need a voice; need to be looked at, be appreciated and helped; they have the potential to become just as big as those other players, but we need to develop our policies so we can move agriculture to become a healthy, wealthy and educated Region Nine.”

The chairman of the RDC Agricultural Committee said the turnout at the RACE last week was not as was expected due to the lack of adequate resources to have big farmers from communities like Santa Fe travel to Lethem with their produce.

“We have to continue to grow our agricultural sector in a way that would be sustainable to the culture and traditions of our peoples, because of the dynamics of our peoples,” King concluded.

Deportee reintegration programme on cards –– but lack of funding a major issue

By Svetlana Marshall THE International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is exploring the possibility of reinitiating the ‘Reintegration of the Returned Migrants Project’ aimed at assisting deportees, but funding remains a problem, the Chief of Mission in Guyana and Regional Coordination Officer for the Caribbean, Robert Natiello has said.

In 2008, Guyana had signed a cooperation agreement with IOM, allowing for the implementation of the ‘Reintegration of the Returned Migrants Project,’ but by the 2012 the U.S.-backed programme had failed to take root.

In an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle in Queens, New York, the IOM Guyana Chief of Mission said involuntary re-migrants commonly called deportees remain a very vulnerable

population.

“They come back to the country, they have difficulties getting jobs. They don’t have any work history in Guyana, and they have real real needs, and this is a population that IOM would love to assist,” Natiello explained.

He said for this reason, it is critical for any country to have a reintegration programme for deportees.

When the U.S.-backed IOM programme was initially launched in Guyana, the international organisation had partnered with the Juncata Juvant Friendly Society during its implementation, Natiello recalled. He said currently, IOM is holding discussions with the friendly society with the view of reinitiating the integration programme.

“For IOM, it is a question of funding, because we are a project-ties organisation, so we are different from other UN agencies which

receive sort of what we call core funding. They receive, say, a chunk of money at the beginning of the year then they can determine how they want to spend it; but in our case, we have to develop a project with specific project lines and we have to have that project funded,” the IOM Guyana chief of mission explained.

While the first programme was funded by the U.S., he said the Guyana Government may have to step in this time around.

“We know that at this time, the United States, which was the previous donor, may not be interested in funding or continuing funding for assisting re-migrants, but if the Government of Guyana is interested, we would love to partner with them,” Natiello told this newspaper.

In Colombia, where the IOM is very much active, the reintegration programme

The organisers said that the El Dorado Awards provide a space to recognise the efforts of the awardees, so they can connect with each other and establish dialogue that would enhance the collaborative approach within a national framework.

there is heavily funded by the government. “In Colombia, we use to receive a lot of funds from the Colombian Government and in fact the Colombian Government was the largest donor for IOM in Colombia and continues to be the largest donor,” he pointed out.

He reiterated that the IOM will be willing to execute the programme if the government is willing to fund it.

If the programme is relaunched with the necessary funding from the government, Natiello explained, that the IOM, through the programme, will provide in-kind contribution to the deportees in a strategic manner, while equipping them with the requisite skills and knowledge needed to sustain themselves.

ASSISTANCE “The person comes up with a business plan, we assist them with the development of the business plan, and maybe they would want to open a snackette or a nail salon and we buy the materials for that business. Maybe the person wants to go back to school and study, we pay the university. So it’s an in-kind

contribution or form of assistance,” he explained.

In August 2016, it was disclosed at the level of a Parliamentary Committee, that 156 Guyanese were deported from Trinidad and Tobago between 2015 and June 2016.

During that same period, Suriname deported 134 Guyanese while 60 Guyanese were sent home from Barbados. The minimal number of deportees came from The Bahamas, Antigua, Jamaica and the USA. In December 2016, a total of 20 Guyanese returned after being deported by the U.S. Government following various periods of incarceration for a range of criminal offences.

Asked whether the IOM has been provided with updated statistics on the number of Guyanese deported from foreign jurisdictions, Natiello, in response, said the IOM contacted the Ministry of Citizenship – Immigration Department with the aim of acquiring the requisite information.

“We did receive some information but it wasn’t tabulated. It wasn’t tabulated so we would have had to gone [sic] through a pile of

It was noted too that there are more Guyanese being deported from the Caribbean region when compared to North America and other territories.

Natiello said IOM is also willing to assist the Ministry of Citizenship in addressing the issues it has in tabulating data with respect to deportees.

“I think that we can work with the Immigration Department to kind of strengthen the management of the data, and how to tabulate that information, so it can be easier to present to donors.”

In March this year, the government had signalled its intention to work with private organisations to assist deportees to re-settle in Guyana.

The decision followed a projected increase in the number of deportees to Guyana from the United States of America due to the tightening of U.S. immigration policies by President Donald Trump.

You never stop learning SO many grown-ups have stories of ‘near misses’ that they have had when they were children and I don’t mean that they avoided getting run over by a car.

I’m referring to the near misses of child sexual abuse. It is not the kind of thing that comes up in conversation, but when the subject is addressed then the stories come out: the perverted family friend, the uncle who whispered inappropriate things or touched a child’s body inappropriately, the time the child had to run for his/her life because a perpetrator almost trapped him/her. And then there are the overtones that can lead to sexual abuse, such as encouraging children to watch pornographic movies or grown-ups making sexual innuendoes or remarks about a child’s developing body. Let’s face it-- some adults are completely out of line and have no -- or little -- respect for children.

As parents you have to remember that perpetrators are among us and you cannot afford to be laid back where

your children are concerned , you have to be aware and vigilant. Because you cannot be with your child 24/7. A good lesson to teach your child is what is appropriate and what is not. Basically, children should know certain (age-appropriate) measures of self- protection.

Lesson number one: what every parent should have taught their child by now is about inappropriate touching. Children must know their private parts must not be touched by anyone, child or adult.

As early as is possible, when capable, children must be taught that they alone should wash their private parts.

If your child is staying somewhere for the night, you should find out what the sleeping arrangements are going to be beforehand, even if he/she is staying with your own family (brother, sister, nephew, niece, cousin aunt, grandmother etc.). Never overestimate your child’s safety or the vigilance of the caregiver.

If you have even the slightest doubt about leaving your child with someone, then don’t do it. A good indication that

something is not right is when a child does not want to stay at a particular house. It is always harder for children to talk out about (sexual or other) misconduct when it involves a member or members of their family. Issues of misplaced trust and potential repercussions will arise and help to prevent disclosure.

The thing is, with children, they really do not know something unless someone either takes the time to teach it to them or they learn it (unfortunately) from their peers or through the media: which is the worse way. So in every aspect of their lives, adults must take time to teach them pertinent things that will help them in life.

They really need to know simple things e.g. * How close are friends allowed to get? * How to demand your personal space when you need it * What is a friendly hug and permissible banter between friends and when and where they should draw the line? * How to discreetly excuse them-

selves from inappropriate conversations * How to uphold their standards and not feel intimidated by others Parents cannot anticipate a child’s every need, but they can instil qualities in their child that stem from sound morals and values. This will allow them to vouch for their child’s behaviour and have confidence enough to send their child anywhere and not worry about the likelihood of bad reports.

Today on 4 minutes for change we are asking parents to take a look at the ‘little’ things the ‘everyday’ things in their child’s life. Is there room for some reinforced advice? Or maybe even some relevant information that hadn’t occurred until now?

Many coastlanders do not know about Rupununi –– Indigenous peoples urged to help in the education process

By Ariana Gordon Residents of the Rupununi, in particular those of Indigenous origin must help to change the mind set of coastlanders by educating them about life in the Rupununi, Indigenous People’s Affairs Minister Sydney Allicock said.

Allicock during a joint visit to the community of Hiawa, Rupununi, Region Nine on Saturday, told villagers that the time has come for Indigenous villages to open all doors to make their contributions known.

He called on the villagers to build the image of the Rupununi, citing the example of Jamaica and that country being known for icons such as Bob Marley and Usain Bolt.

The minister also called on the Indigenous population to reject policymakers’ assertions that they need to be educated, noting that it is the Indigenous people of Guyana who have helped many researchers to become doctors and scientists.

In fact, the minister noted that those who aided in that process were not formally educated but their knowledge of the hinterland and the eco-system proved vital in researchers’ work.

“Education should not be seen as a one way thing where I heard policymakers, planners saying we have to take education to the Amerindian people. We must stop them when they say that. I prefer them to say we are going to share education with the Indigenous peoples,” said Minister Allicock while at the Hiawa Primary School.

The minister said the

time has come for Indigenous people to embrace their culture and teachings while merging same with modern advancements.

“What we need is appropriate education, balanced education and here is where we need the sort of institution to link with the UG and other universities; it is a sharing experience.

We need more Guyanese to know what Guyana is,” the minister emphasised.

The hinterland, he said must be seen a place not only for refuge but a place to be well-respected.

“We need to change the mindset; we can do it, but to do it, we have to come together as partners for the development of this country.”

The minister noted that often time tourists enter the hinterland regions and pollute it, thereby causing ailments to those who reside there.

In that light, he urged that there be village rules that govern what transpires in each community.

The minister spoke to the Village Improvement Plan (VIP) and urged village leaders to have such in place, noting that it would serve as a guide for future development. “… you have to get yourself in order first.

Many communities do not know what they have; they are given a piece of land but they don’t know how many people they have… we would like to see a programme where residents’ list is updated every month,” he said, urging that there is proper data management.

Meanwhile, Minister Allicock believes that the peo-

ple of the Rupununi need to be rounded individuals and lauded the Bina Hill School of Learning as a pioneer in this regard.

“It is time we take responsibility for our development by educating our people or opening up institutions that will help our people right within the region to excel. Use the Bina Hill School for Learning as that possibility; we are working towards that.”

Currently, there is an expansion programme ongoing for the institute’s dormitories, and according to the minister, many of those who graduated from the institution in July were provided with job opportunities by members of the business community.

“We are talking about a rounded work force and we are aiming for and it is going to help; this institution is to help brand the Rupununi.

It must come within us that this is our thing… the branding is your identity.

We are working to bring the people out of the darkness to prove we have a contribution to make where national development is concerned,” Allicock concluded.

The residents of Hiawa agreed with Minister Allicock and pleaded with him to have government establish more technical institutions within Region Nine to benefit young people.

Minister Allicock was part of a team who visited the satellite communities of Nappi, Parishara and Hiawa. The team included Minister of Social Cohesion, Youth, Culture and Sport, Dr George Norton and Region Nine Chairman Brian Allicock.

Stopping filariasis dead in its tracks

AJAY, 75, (not his real name) makes a living by preparing and selling egg balls, plantain chips, channa and sometimes sugar cakes in his corner shop. Nowadays, however, Ajay can no longer easily prepare these local favourites since his left leg is swollen double its usual size.

It all began just over 10 years ago when his left leg first showed signs of swelling.

When he spoke to the Guyana Chronicle, he recalled visiting a doctor after his condition prolonged and he was diagnosed with Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) or ‘Filaria’, as it is more commonly called. To him though, it was just “Big Foot.”

LF affects the body’s lymphatic system, which functions to remove unwanted fluids from the body and transports ‘lymph’-- a fluid which contains white bloods cells that help to fight infections.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that this disease is caused by infection with parasitic worms called nematodes, classified as ‘filarial worms.’ There are three main types of these worms: the wuchereria bancrofti, the brugia malayi and the brugia timori.

In Guyana, according to the Coordinator of the Neglected Infectious Disease Programme and the National Coordinator for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis campaign, Dr. Fabu Moses, filaria is caused by the bancrofti worm and is transmitted from human to human by the culex mosquito.

Unfortunately, persons can be affected by this disease and only discover their infection until several years later, since the manifestations of the disease develop in stages.

Dr. Moses explained that the conditions of LF may be asymptomatic, acute or chronic. While there are no external manifestations for the asymptomatic conditions, the body’s lymphatic system may still be affected.

And even though someone may be infected, it may take many years before it develops into a chronic condition, which includes the external manifestations of: lymphoedema (tissue swelling), elephantiasis (skin/ tissue thickening) of limbs and hydrocele (scrotal swelling).

Attesting to this was Ajay’s 37-year-old daughter, Molly (not real name) who related that he had been infected for more than 20 years, as said by his doctors, before his leg began swelling.

IRREVERSIBLE For persons like Ajay, however, the chronic signs (swelling

of his leg) signal the point of no return.

“There is no cure, prevention is our best option,” Dr. Moses said. The chronic manifestations are irreversible.

Another man who has been infected with the lymphatic disease, John (not real name) a market vendor, explained that he has been living with his swollen leg for 18 years and he has learned to not let it be an impediment to his daily life.

“I does be selling [at the market] everyday, so I don’t get to take care of my leg a lot,” John disclosed. On Sundays, however, he only plies his trade until midday, and as such, he related, “On Sundays I go home and I wash the leg properly; I clean it out and so and I treat it.”

This Sunday regime is part of what Dr. Moses calls the ‘CARE’ system. While there is currently no cure for Lymphatic

is proving to be a challenge.

Guyana was one of the member states that signed onto the WHO’s Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis by 2020 (GPELF) in 2000, and the country sprang into action by mapping the disease in the country by 2001.

The doctor related, “Mapping is one of the first things we needed to do to be able to guide our interventions.” She explained that the purpose of this was to identify to what extent was the country affected by filaria, what was needed to be done and how these actions would affect a filaria-free future. Guyana was endemic then.

A Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign was initiated to remedy the nation, whereby diethylcarbamazine (DEC) fortified salt was distrib-

ma-Waini, has a filaria presence of 0.8 per cent, which makes it non-endemic as it is below the one per cent mark.

Thus, at the beginning of October this year, the Ministry of Public Health in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and through support from the Pan-American Heath Organisation/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) launched a revitalised and re-conceptualised MDA seeking to eradicate the disease from all regions.

It is crafted under the title of “Let’s Prevent Filaria,” which stresses that the disease is NOT treatable, but citizens can safeguard against it through prevention. For this programme to work, a 65 per cent of the total at-risk population must be administered the pills.

The pills, Diethylcarbamazine Citrate (DEC) and Albendazole (ALB) must be

the school beforehand to educate students as to why they should take the tablets. According to her, students should know why they are taking the pills.

Besides targeting schools, officials have been disseminating pills at health centres and other public places and even going a step further to visit homes. This, as related by the Junior Minister of Public Health Dr. Karen Cummings through an invited comment, is part of the effort to ensure that every Guyanese take their pills to safeguard against the ailment.

In addition to the MDA, Dr. Cummings related that the ministry is employing other tactics to eliminate filaria.

A FILARIA-FREE GUYANA Filaria has been described by the WHO as one of the oldest and most debilitating neglected tropical diseases. While many countries have been able to eliminate the disease after signing onto the global resolution, Guyana has fallen behind in this regard.

“We are one of the few countries that still have this disease in this part of the Americas,” the public health minister bemoaned and due to cognisance of this, she highlighted that her ministry has been working assiduously to entirely eliminate it.

Dr. Moses, like the health minister, explained that the disease is compounded by other issues such as accessibility (reaching outlying regions), lack of human resources and the general stigmas associated with the disease.

“A lot of people do not go to the clinic because they tend to hide their disease, since it is very stigmatized -- especially when people use words like ‘bigfoot’ and ‘goadie’,” Dr. Moses said.

Both filaria victims, Ajay and John, mentioned that they were faced with stigma and discrimination, especially in their professional lives.

“My customers never really said anything to me, but now and then somebody gon come and say something and me and them does gotta go up the road,” John remarked.

Despite the prevalence of the disease and the challenges that accompany it, there is much hope still.

As related by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Shamdeo Persaud at the campaign’s launch, “From more than 150 patients that we were seeing in the mid-2000s, now they are only about 15 patients who have to be actively managed at the clinic. Last year there were only 82 surgeries for hydrocele as compared to 447 in 2005.”

With these strides in mind, it is now up to the general population to take their pills and safeguard against mosquitoes. As explicitly stated by Dr. Moses, “The goal of our programme is eliminating filaria as a public health problem; that means getting filaria under one percent in the entire population.

Geron Williams wins Digicel/Evolution Cancer Awareness feature

GUYANA’s lone professional racing cyclist, Geron Williams yesterday won the feature 35-lap race of the Digicel/Team Evolution Cancer Awareness Cycle Road Race which was staged around the outer circuit of the National Park.

After blowing away the field that was made up of the country’s top wheelsmen, Williams, a humble individual told Chronicle Sport he wants to dedicate his hard-earned victory to his relative, Barbara Lovell, who died a few years ago from Breast cancer.

“Today’s race was more than a bicycle race, and the victory was made a bit sweeter by the competitive nature of the event.” Williams stated.

He (Williams) said leading up to the event, he prepared for a very intense race and it lived up to expectations, but was prepared for it and in the end, his preparations paid off.

He said the race was very tough from the start and he

missed the first break which occurred after the completion of the third lap, but with assistance from four other cyclists, he was able to connect back to the learders.

He said with three laps remaining and after sharing the lead with a few of the other cyclists up front, he made his move but was pursued by Curtis Dey, Jonel Yearwood, Andrew Hicks and Mark Harris. With one lap remaining, he found himself in second position but battled to the end and in turning for the finish at the corners of Lamaha and Irving Streets, he made his move and blew away the opposition, winning by approximately five bicycle lengths.

Dey was second, Yearwood third, Hicks fourth, Harris fifth and Paul DeNobrega sixth.

Williams also won three of the five prime prizes that were up for grabs, while Walter Grant-Stuart and Dey won one each.

In other results, Dey was the first junior to cross the finish line. Shane Bourne won the five-lap mountain bike race ahead of Oziah McAullay and Julio Melville, respectively.

The novice event was won

by Raphael Alberts who finished ahead of O’Neil Rosae and Paul Thomas, respectively.

Ian `Dumb Boy’ Jackson won the 20-lap race for veterans over 45 years of age, ahead of Kennard Lovell and Amrit Sankazr, respectively.

In the 20-lap race for veterans under 45 years of age, Junior Niles won from Paul Cho-Wee-Nam and Stephen Fernandes, in that order.

As was promised prior to the start of the event, Digicel had pledged to match the registration fee of the cyclists and donate same to the Cancer Institute of Guyana and yesterday, they lived up to their promise by donating a cheque worth $472,000 to the organisation.

Battling for country pride, the Guyanese were outstanding in their drives to hold their own against the Jamaicans who came with a point to prove.

In the 125CC, it was Kristian Jeffrey who won two of the three races on the night after admitting that the pressure was overwhelming.

In the two races he won, the Guyanese was on pole position, but starting from fourth in the second race, a spin on the exit of the bowl ensured that he fell to an unfamiliar fifth.

Jeffrey said, “I was coming in hot on Josh (Sirgany of Jamaica), so it was either I make contact or take myself out. I chose the latter, but that’s racing.

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) Mercedes won the Formula One constructors’ title for the fourth year in a row on Sunday but Lewis Hamilton was made to wait despite cruising to a U.S. Grand Prix victory at one of his favourite circuits.

Hamilton, presented with the winner’s trophy by former U.S. president Bill Clinton, now looks sure to finish off the job and become Britain’s first four times world champion in Mexico next weekend.

The Mercedes driver’s fifth victory in six years at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas extended his lead over Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who finished second, to 66 points.

There are a maximum of 75 points still to be won from the three races remaining.

“I love this track, I think this track is now my favourite to be honest,” said Hamilton, interviewed by Usain Bolt on the podium and joining the Olympic sprint champion’s

signature victory pose.

“A big congratulations to the team. They work so hard back at the factory and here.”

The victory was the 62nd of Hamilton’s career and his ninth of the season.

Bishoo snares five for 79 as Windies turn tables on Zimbabwe

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe, (CMC) – Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo’s fourth five-wicket haul in Tests handed West Indies a precious 60-run first innings lead, and the Caribbean side then batted themselves into control of the opening Test against Zimbabwe on the second day here Sunday.

Exploiting the turning pitch at Queens Sports Club, the 31-year-old picked up five for 79 as Zimbabwe, responding to West Indies’ disappointing 219, were restricted to a paltry 159 in their first innings.

Pacers Kemar Roach (2-23) and Jason Holder (2-25) both supported with two wickets apiece to ensure there was no revival by the hosts.

Opener Hamilton Masakadza top-scored with 42, Craig Ervine got 39 and Solomon Mire chipped in with 27, but the hosts lost their way from their lunch time position of 101 three – their last seven wickets tumbling for a mere

58 runs.

Left-hander Kieran Powell then fell cheaply for 17 as West Indies stumbled slightly at the start but opener Kraigg Brathwaite, who ended 38 not out and Kyle Hope, unbeaten on 32, guided the visitors to the close on 88 for one, courtesy of an unbroken 63-run, second wicket partnership.

Brathwaite has so far consumed 99 deliveries and struck a four and a six while Hope has counted four boundaries in a 65-ball innings.

The partnership was crucial as it takes West Indies into the third day of the fast-moving Test, 148 runs to the good.

Having endured the worst of the exchanges on Saturday’s day one, the Windies were keen on finding early breakthroughs and managed one in the first hour, after Zimbabwe resumed on 19 without loss.

THE teams participating in the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc. (GSCL INC)-organised Inaugural Prime Minister’s T20 Softball Cup were drawn in their respective groups yesterday, ahead of the October 27 – 29 tournament.

The draw which was held at the Malteenoes Sports Club yesterday, saw Regal, one of the country’s leading softball teams, being placed in Group A with Farm, De Hoop and Speedboat XI in the Open Category.

In Group B, Success, Hill Foot Warriors and Spartans will collide, while Group C will see Mafia XI, Boots XI and SVC Enforcers.

In the Masters Category, Amazon Masters, Regal Masters and New York Hustlers are in Group A. Group B is made up of HS Masters, Tropical Springs and Enterprise Masters.

Everest cricket ground will host the finals on October 29, when $600,000 will be up for grabs in the Open category, while the Masters will

vie for the winners’ purse of $500,000. Both categories will have a runners-up prize of $100,000 as well as trophies.

According to the organisers, no registration fee is required to play in the ‘first of its kind’ T20 tournament. A team briefing is set for 13:30hrs at Malteenoes where the rules and other matters in relation to the tournament will be discussed.

Malteenoes, GYO, GNIC and the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) grounds are the other venues where matches will be played simultaneously on October 27, 28 and 29.

The tournament, which is being played in collaboration with the National Sports Commission, will feature the Open and Masters Categories with teams from New York, Florida and Canada, as well as the three counties of Guyana, participating.

Lighted bails will be used in the competition and added entertainment will be provided by the Crossover band and cheerleaders during the finals at the Everest Cricket Club.

Much depended on Ervine – unbeaten on 27 at lunch – and he managed to survive the first hour afterwards before falling to the first ball following the drinks break, missing a sweep at Bishoo and going lbw.

He was the third wicket to fall in the session with Sean Williams, on two at the break, adding five before being caught at the wicket off Roach and Sikandar Raza (6) holing out to deep mid-off off Bishoo.

Tottering on 133 for six, there was no way back for the hosts as they lost their last four wickets for 20 runs in quick time.

Hope survived a chance to short leg off Cremer before he had scored but then got off the mark with a rasping drive through mid-on off in the bowler’s next over, en route to his highest Test score in eight innings.

Guyana ranked 110 in latest FIBA/Nike World Rankings NEW International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Ranking for Men, presented

by Nike, saw Guyana on the ranking board for the first time in the country’s rich basketball history.

Guyana is now ranked 110 out of 213 national teams, after having never been ranked before and was considered to be one of the unranked countries within FIBA for the past 56 years.

Both Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) president, Nigel Hinds, and GABF International General Secretary and CBC Vice President, Patrick Haynes, are quite pleased that the National Senior Men’s Team was able to capture such a high worldwide ranking, and are very optimistic that the team will be ranked even higher after next year’s FIBA AmeriCup Caribbean Pre-Qualifier, which will be hosted by Suriname in June 2018.

The Guyana Men’s National team placed 5th in the 2014 CBC Championships in Tortola, BVI, which was its best performance in this decade.

Caribbean countries ranked higher in the list include: (15) Puerto Rico, (17) Dominican Republic, (51) Virgin Islands, (59) Bahamas, (60) Cuba, (68) Jamaica, (76) Antigua and Barbuda , (92) British Virgin Islands, (97) Barbados, (100) St. Vincent and the Grenadines, (109) Bermuda, while Guyana(110) outranked Suriname (118), Cayman Islands(121) and Trinidad and Tobago (143).

Canada crush Guyana to take Pan Am Bronze, T&T hammer Argentina for WC spot

By Stephan Sookram GUYANA’s chance for a second Pan American Hockey Federation medal was quelled on Saturday evening by the Canadians as the indoor tournament concluded at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Playing in the Bronze Medal fixture of the Pan American men’s cup, the locals were looking to exact revenge on the Canadians who had beaten them on Thursday evening.

And they started off well, scoring first from a Robert France field goal in the opening minute as the locals sought to take the fight to their North Ameri-

can opponents.

However, the proverbial thorn in their side from Thursday returned in the form of

Guyana-born Jonatan Roberts, who equalized in the 8th minute through a penalty corner.

TOP ranked clubs in their respective associations, Georgetown’s Colts and Victory Valley Royals of Linden started their campaign ominously when the 6th Brushes Classic invitational championship began with the Colts recording a comfortable 71-56 win over Pepsi Sonics, while Victory Valley Royals dominated Retrieve Raiders with a 96-56 blowout, Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.

Among those to witness these opening matches were President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation, Nigel Hinds, along with Monty ‘Tanner’ Profitt, the tournament’s major sponsor; former senior national standouts, James and Mike Brusche and Auric Tappin, all of whom now reside in the United States and are home specifically for this sixth biennial tournament which has at stake $300,000 for the winners, $200,000 for the losing finalists, and $100,000 for third place, along with several other trophies and prizes.

Nigel Hinds Financial Services are also on board as a sponsor of this year’s Brusches Classic. .

Colts and Royals disposed of their opponents to move smoothly into the semifinals which will be played on Friday at the tournament venue--the MSC hard court.

In their opening game it was the Sonics who took

an early lead when the first quarter closed out with them ahead 17-14, but the response

Dismissed for a disappointed 219 in their first innings on Saturday’s opening day, West Indies hit back strongly to bundle out Zimbabwe cheaply for grab a valuable first innings lead of 60 runs.

They were spearheaded by frontline leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo who picked up five for 79 – his fourth five-wicket haul in Tests.

Estwick praised the 31-year-old for the outstanding effort especially after his struggles on the recent tour of England where he managed just three wickets in two Tests

“He didn’t have the best tour of England. It is a very dificult place to bowl in but when you look at [last] September to this September, if you have a check you would see that Bishoo would’ve got 30 wickets in that period,” Estwick pointed out.

“So he’s been quite successful. He got eight wickets in Dubai on a flat track as well so he does his job. The bowling unit has been outstanding. You can’t fault the bowling unit and Bishoo is very much a part of that bowling unit.”

Despite the spin-friendly nature of the track, pacers Kemar Roach and Jason Holder cashed in with two wickets apiece, to provide support for Bishoo.

The combined effort saw Zimbabwe, who resumed the day on 19 without loss, lose three wickets in the first session before suffering a terminal collpase after lunch.

Estwick said the bowling display had just been an extension of the form of the Windies attack on recent tours.

“Over the last year we’ve been bowling quite well. The bowling department has been functioning so I’m not surprised that we were able to bowl them out under the score,” he said.

“What we wanted to do was make sure it became a second innings game. Once you make a score as low as 219, you know it’s going to be an uphill task but we felt that once Bishoo could come to the party – and our seamers have been outstanding for a whole year – that we could restrict them to this score.”
