A RECOMMENDATION has been made for the Government of Guyana, when it starts production and receives its net inflow of revenue, to make cash transfers annually to every household in the country.

“I believe that some portion of the net cash flow from oil should be dedicated to be given as cash transfers

He chided critics who do not believe in such a vision and noted that had it not been for such an opportunity to speak at the Friendship Primary School, he would not have got a chance to express such a point of view.

Late President Forbes Burnham remembered ON the eve of the 33rd death anniversary of form e r P re s i d e n t L i n d e n Forbes Sampson Burnham, executive members of the National Congress of Women (NCW) participated in a wreath-laying ceremony to pay respect

to his legacy.

On August 6, 1985 Burnham, who was the founder and leader of the People’s National Congress (PNCR), died at age 62 from heart failure during surgery on his throat at the Georgetown Hospital.

Since then, his death anniversary has been observed each year to pay tribute to him. This year, it was hosted at the NCW, the women’s arm of the PNCR, at their headquarters at Lot 44 Public Road, Kitty.

In attendance were Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence who serves as First Vice Chairperson of the PNCR and National Chairman of the NCW, and

Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams who serves as the PNCR Chairman.

In her remarks, Lawrence thanked the women for taking the time to celebrate the life of their past leader who, she reminded, paved the way for the party to empower women all across the world.

One year after Burnham’s death, the women of the NCW, then called the Women’s Revolutionary Socialist Movement (WRSM), decided to commemorate his memory with the construction of a statue of him at their headquarters located on Kitty Public Road.

During the ceremony, floral tributes were laid at the statue on behalf of the Burnham family, friends and foundation and the PNCR. To continue the celebration of the life of the late LFS Burnham, today, at 07:00 hrs, the PNCR is hosting its annual commemoration ceremony at the Mausoleum, Place of Heroes, Seven Ponds located at the Botanical Gardens.

Christian leaders rail against LGBT OVER 100 religious leaders and pastors of the Christian community have stamped their names to a public statement calling on the government to maintain criminal charges against those who practise buggery.

The statement published as a full-page advertisement in the Sunday newspapers took a shot at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community.

“We the undermentioned leaders of the Christian community in Guyana, representing a wide cross-section of the body of Christ, as well as individuals for promotion and defence of Biblical family values, call upon the Government of Guyana to maintain existing legislative provisions and criminal laws regarding indecency and gross indecency,” the statement said.

The signatories were individuals from churches in Georgetown, New Amsterdam, Linden, Berbice, West Coast Demerara, West Bank Demerara, East Bank Essequibo and other locations.

The statement went on to indicate the reasons for the position held, which included threats to “freedom of speech, of conscience, of religion and parental rights of people of faith,” should the country’s laws be altered.

The group of Christian leaders said “the practice of buggery violates the laws of God and is unnatural, unhealthy, destructive to the human body and to society as a whole” and that preservation of existing laws contributes to the “pathway of order and blessings for Guyana.”

“We believe that buggery and other practices characteristic of the LGBTQ lifestyle are in fact detrimental to the persons engaging in them and the decriminalisation of such acts will have the effect of escalating the practice of these harmful and destructive behaviours and endangering the morals of our youth and society as a whole,” the statement said.

Just last month, a group of religious leaders from the Georgetown Ministers Fellowship (GMF) convened a press conference at the Full Gospel Annex, hours before a scheduled ‘Gay Pride Parade’ to condemn the initiative.

There, the body called on the government to shun this event, along with the legalisation of homosexuality.

On June 2, however, members of the local LGBTQ community came out to the Pride Parade in their numbers gyrating to music through the streets of

Georgetown, while others bore placards stating ‘spread love, not hate.’

Although heads of both the LGBTQ and Christian community claim no discrimination or animosity against the other, much tension still remains between the two.

A video which surfaced from the recent pride parade showed revellers among the group intentionally pausing to gyrate in revealing clothing in front of a particular church for those on its premises to witness.

Several members of the

LGBTQ community have stated that a number of issues continue to affect the community such as bullying, discrimination and hindrance to access of basic socio-economic services such as health, education, work and housing.

As such, organisations such as the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) continue to call for the amendment of “anti-LGBTQ discriminatory laws” and “ending all forms of homophobia in Guyana.”

In a very visible contrast,

the statement of the Christian community to the public concluded on an air of confidence of hope for change.

“As Christians, we continue to be available to help persons to deal with and ultimately exit such lifestyles and also to reach out to the LGBTQ community with the love of Christ and the power of His word.”

Building up our defence capabilities BEING a fighter jet pilot is arguably the least likely thing any Guyanese boy or girl growing up might expect to be, given that Guyana has no such jets and some would say no need for costly military equipment of that scale. Perhaps the odd youth is inspired by films such as Top Gun, due to the release of a sequel featuring the evergreen Tom Cruise.

This distant Hollywood characterisation is perhaps why it was so surprising to see two Guyanese pilots complete a training programme under the Chinese armed forces in the art of manning a fighter jet. This was a welcome nod to Guyana’s great potential as a country of regional influence, even though it is indeed true that when those brave pilots return home there will be no jets waiting for them to proudly man.

We can at least acknowledge and laud their patriotic spirit for now, and the foresight of local armed service personnel who facilitated this programme. The Guyanese

public should fully support our courageous, well-trained troops and capacity-building initiatives such as this one lend credibility to the notion that the armed forces are administered well. This does also pose the question, however, of whether we might actually at some point see fighter jets locally.

Our leadership, under President Granger, has wisely emphasised diplomacy and international institutions as Guyana’s first line of defence against any aggressor, Venezuela being the long-standing, chief concern. But as many wealthy nations with small populations have demonstrated, there is always a need to build up local defence capabilities. Even further, there is especially a need for rapid- response capabilities in Guyana, as our dense forests make navigation slow.

Fighter jets commonly comprise an important element of small nations’ defences and it is virtually commonplace to hear of Israel’s fighter jets in action, constantly

defending their hotly contested borders. In particular, fighter jets provide great increases in rapid-response capabilities, because of the speed at which they fly (regularly faster than the speed of sound) while also bearing powerful weaponry to deal with whatever threat is encountered.

Technological superiority, in this case through the use of fighter jets, has proven decisive in many conflicts, the most striking example being Israel’s victory in the Six-day war, in which the technologically inferior air forces of Israel’s enemies were swiftly and decisively dealt with. Fighter jets of repute are no small matter, however, costing many millions of dollars each; the United States’ most advanced fighter jet programme is actually reported to be the most expensive military programme in the world. Cheaper Chinese, Russian and Finnish alternatives are however available, even though they may not be quite as capable.

These first two Guyanese pilots thus represent a notion of a far-off future, when Guyana is sufficiently developed that such expensive military equipment as fighter jets are a feasible solution. But with Guyana’s large and growing proven reserves, the time is slowly coming when young Guyanese can perhaps dream of being proud fighter pilots, streaking through the sky above our lush rainforests. Given that fighter jets form a key element of many national celebrations, this would certainly be a proud sight.

Who knows, at the very least, we should not discourage our enthusiastic youth from dreaming big, because now is the time to dream.

The dictates of our qualified armed services personnel will determine the course of budgetary decisions in defence, so we will in time learn what is truly required, but Guyanese can certainly hold their heads high. Long live the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t Dear Editor, THE debate on the recent fatal shooting of five bandits by the police at Pattensen, East Coast Demerara, rages.

The vexed question is: should the police have taken the scoundrels alive or dead? Damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Please permit me to join in the confabulation and repeat some apposite issues I discussed in a previous letter to the editor in relation to the use of force. I will not be able to cover several elements of the use of force -- including deadly force -- because of the constraint of space.

I must admit that I do not know all the facts relevant to the shooting. Therefore, I would be considered flippant if I attempt to pass judgement on the shooting by police one way or the other.

The International Asso-

ciation of Chiefs of Police believes that “A police officer must never employ unnecessary force or violence and will use only such force in the discharge of duty as is reasonable in all circumstances.

“Force must be used only in the greatest restraint and only after discussion, negotiation and persuasion have [been] found to be inappropriate or ineffective. While the use of force is occasionally unavoidable, every police officer will refrain from applying the unnecessary inflection of pain or suffering and will never engage in cruel, degrading or inhumane treatment to anyone. “ Guyana Police Force Orders 33/69 outlines When You May Fire as it relates to the use of firearms by members of the force: (a) When you are attacked and you apprehend serious danger to your person and are

unable to defend yourself by any other means; (b) When property you are ordered to defend is attacked and you are unable to safeguard it by any other means; (C) When an attack is made to rescue persons in lawful custody; (d) When someone is found committing or about to commit a felony, e.g. murder, dangerous violence to the person, robbery, burglary, house-breaking, store-breaking, arson or larceny and does not desist after warning and cannot be deterred or arrested by any other means; (e) To prevent a police station or police outpost from being overrun; and (f) When so ordered by a superior in rank.

The use of force, including excessive force, has always been difficult if not controversial at times. It is on occasions a necessary tool of the job of law enforcement, but determining what is rea-

sonable is highly subjective.

Graham v Connor appears to be the landmark case in the use of force. The court held “The calculus of reasonableness must embody allowance for the fact that police officers are often forced to make split-second judgement in circumstances that are tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving-about the amount of force that is necessary in a particular situation.” Nowicki explains, “The standard according to this decision, is the ‘ reasonable, objective officer. ‘ “ Several types of force option continuum exist. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centre (USA) model can be very instructive. It has five levels. Level One is the Compliant Level where no use of force is usually reasonable. Level Two is the Resistive (Passive) Level where the subject does not follow the officer’s com-

mands. Force options here include directing or guiding the subject through handson techniques. Level three is the Resistive (Active) Level, which occurs when the subject actively resists arrest.

Level Three force options include joint manipulation or restraints, leverages techniques, pressure points or even OC (pepper) spray with a warning given under proper circumstances. Level Four is Assaultive (bodily harm) Level, a direct physical attack on the officer or others.

Appropriate force options at this level include striking with the hands, fists, elbows or knees; kicks; baton strikes; and forcefully directing the subject to the ground. Level Five is the Assaultive (serious bodily harm or death) Level, where the appropriate response would be deadly.

Many times the police are left in a quandary in relation to the use of force. Death

lurks around the next corner.

To use or not use force, including deadly force, regularly come into play. Based on their training, policemen are not expected to be pusillanimous, but rather they are required to act correctly and decisively in those law-enforcement situations. Use-offorce expert Nowicki (2002) posits: “There are three rules relating to the use of force by any officer. Rule number one is that you go home the same way as when you went to work: ALIVE. Rule number two is that you don’t go to prison. Rule number three is that you keep your job.

If your use of force is reasonable, you protect yourself, your agency, the community and even the assailant. But when in doubt, always remember rule number one. “ Yours respectfully Clinton Conway

The Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport have both contributed $1.5M each to the games, while the Ministry of the Presidency has provided prizes and other forms of support to make the event possible.

Meanwhile, President Granger also handed over a boat and engine as well as a quantity of sports gear to the village of Chinoweng, which was donated by Ms. Beverley Tapp, General Manager of B and J Civil Works and the RDC, respectively.

According to Chairman of the region, Gordon Bradford, the village has been requesting a boat and engine for the past two years to transport their team to the games, as well as to ensure children are able to attend school.

Following a request by Tapp to the RDC to be allowed to make a contribution to the region in observance of her company’s 25th anni-

versary, Bradford said that he shared the appeal of the residents of Chinoweng with her and she readily agreed to provide the boat and engine.

Tapp said that her company is pleased to be giving back to the region, where it executed its first road-construction contract back in 1993 as she urged the residents to take care of the gift.

The event was also attended by First Lady Sandra Granger; Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton; Director of Sport, Christopher Jones; and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Alfred King.

THE Alliance For Change (AFC) will contest November’s Local Government Elections (LGEs) independently.

“This decision was reached following the inconclusive negotiations with APNU,” the party said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

General-Secretary of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Amna Ali, the dominant member in the coalition government, told the Guyana Chronicle that the APNU is fully prepared for the polls.

When asked for a comment regarding the AFC’s position, Ali said she can only speak for APNU’s preparation for the elections.

“We have made strides in various areas, we have started our work,” she said, noting that APNU will be

contesting the LGE in all the constituencies.

“We have the capacity to do well in all areas,” she said.

In February this year, the party announced that it was committed to contesting the elections with its coalition partner, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

However, the party pointed out at the time that its position was subject to the mutual resolution of a set of issues it had put forward.

The AFC was quick to point out on Sunday that its latest decision applies only to the November 12 polls, “and does not, in any way, affect the APNU+AFC coalition government, nor does it, in any way, change the AFC’s position on coalition politics at the national level.”

Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson has been appointed campaign director, while Juretha Fernandes has been appointed deputy campaign director.

The AFC noted that it is in full preparation mode for LGEs, including hosting meetings in the various constituencies and identifying potential candidates who will be subject to a rigorous internal vetting process before official appointment.

implementable solutions,” the party said.

The AFC is currently determining which municipalities and constituencies it will strategically contest, as it does not envision contesting in each Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and in every constituency of all municipalities until subsequent election cycles.

The party said it is confident of the support it will continue to receive from the populace and assured citizens that it will only nominate candidates of the highest calibre and quality.

In February, the AFC announced that party leader Raphael Trotman was mandated to write leader of the APNU, President David Granger, stating the party’s position on the issues of concern.

“The timeframe for a

resolution and an agreement with APNU is the end of April 2018,” the AFC stated, while adding that it is cognisant that there are areas in the relationship that are working well and others that need to be examined and strengthened.

Additionally, the AFC stated that “the recommendations from AFC’s review of the Cummingsburg Accord will be pursued with APNU with a view to strengthening and enforcing the accord, not just for Local Government Elections, but particularly for the 2020 General Elections, which members saw as the bigger picture.”

De Florimonte’s girlfriend cries for justice THE girlfriend of Jason De Florimonte, the man who was allegedly shot and killed by a city businessman, is crying out for justice, since the victim was said to be unarmed when he met his demise.

Florimonte and sustained minor bruises at the front of their home during an altercation, when a staff from a nearby hotel intervened and attempted to quell the situation. The peacemaker was rebuked by De Florimonte and by then the woman was able to walk away from her aggressor. However, within

a few seconds she heard four gunshots and quickly turned back only to see the lifeless body of the man she shares a child with lying on the road.

With uncontrollable tears, she added, “there was no one outside the hotel, I started to scream, then they came out and I begged

them to take him in a car and nobody moved, they waited until the police come to move him by the time we got there he was already gone.”

Soon after Rambarran visited the police station and gave a report of what transpired. She is denying reports that the incident occurred inside the hotel and noted that De Florimonte was unarmed. “my stuff happened outside of the hotel, we were on our bridge where we’re living...I can’t say that I saw Jason walking into the hotel because when

I got up I just keep going, without even looking back until I heard the shots,” she added.

De Florimonte was shot four times to his right side and collapsed a short distance away from his Fifth Avenue, Subryanville, home.

De Florimonte was a driver with Top Brandz distribution. “He was everything to me and his children…they mean the world to him, he never ever left them without anything, for me I have to pick up the pieces because he was my breadwinner, I

Public servants could receive –– says minister of state non-salary benefits MINISTER of State Joseph Harmon said the Government is working to include non-salary benefits for public servants as part of the ongoing discussion to increase wages and salaries in the sector.

These deliberations are being made with the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), Harmon said on Sunday.

“We are engaging the Public Service Union.

I can’t say specifically where those talks are now but certainly on the last time we engaged on salaries we were also looking

at non-salary benefits as well. And those issues, I believe, are still on the table to be determined.

“When you look at salary, you’re looking at salaries and benefits.

It’s not just one element, it’s an entire package and that is what we’re saying to them: don’t just separate the salary from the non-salary benefits.

Because if in fact you’re working for $1,000 a day and then I am able to subsidise some of your expenses for which you have to spend that $1,000 then, in fact, that adds to the $1,000 that you’re

getting. And these are some of the discussions we were having with the GPSU,” he said.

Recently, GPSU President Patrick Yarde had criticised the Government for “deep-seated issues” with regards to the welfare of workers which he said are yet to be addressed.

He noted that although the Government inherited some of the present “baggage” from the previous administration, it will not forget public servants.

By Vishani Ragobeer FORMER Speaker of the National Assembly Ralph Ramkarran has urged citizens to shun divisive, ethnic politics in Guyana, contending that for too long it has hindered the development of Guyana.

Ramkarran made the appeal in his weekly blog “Conversation Tree” as he reflected on a number of issues facing Guyana such as crime, poverty and the slow pace of preparation for oil in 2020.

“The impact of every major or social or economic decision is scrutinised through ethnic lenses,” he said, addong “Accusations under the radar of ethnic discrimination have flourished over the closure of several sugar estates, just as when the bauxite industry was miniaturised in the 1990s.”

Ramkarran said these problems cannot be resolved unless “our broken politics is fixed” which will allow for the society to heal and where citizens will no longer be “incentivised” by the political system to view decisions

through ethnic lenses.

“The most fundamental challenge in Guyana’s modern political history, and recognised over the entire period, has been to devise a system where ethnic-political competition is reduced and/or is channeled into creative energies, so that ethnic dominance and competition would not stultify economic and social progress,” the former Speaker affirmed.

He added that local political parties have a firm grasp on the political space of which neither is willing to give up. This, according to him, generates a culture that promotes ethnic dominance where at least one ethnic group in Guyana feels as though its economic existence is threatened after elections.

To mitigate this climate, Ramkarran has opined: “Guyanese need a broad-based, popular, movement to sweep away the cobweb which has engulfed our politics – a movement that will mobilise the electorate to demand a refashioning of our political system away from the ‘winner take all’

GWI takes steps to protect workers from noxious gases

THE Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has equipped its workers, particularly those who go into the sewers, with monitors which measure and identify gases in the underground conduits.

GWI’s intention is to recognise the presence of gases before the workers are sent into the sewers, said GWI’s Sanitation Manager Rensforde Joseph, during a press conference on Friday.

In the past, workers would usually go into the sewers protected with gear, but would not know what gases are present in the conduit.

The company has embarked on a process to ensure that the workers are safe before they enter the sewers and while they are working in them.

“We’re looking at four main gases -- hydrogen sulfide, methane, carbon monoxide and oxygen levels, but the instrument has the ability to monitor all gases,” he

said Joseph, adding that his department is also working on implementing systems that would sustain and preserve lives during an emergency.

The company also plans to build baths for sewerage workers.

Let their attitude be one of gratitude

IT might sound a little ridiculous to some people, that this week’s ‘4 minutes 4 change’ is about something as basic as teaching children good manners.

But every day it seems as

if more of our fundamental values are diminishing and parents are failing to instill simple everyday ethics into their children’s lives -- ethics that once were a mere formality.

When children are taught the importance of good manners they are learning a lesson for life. There is an adage that states ‘manners maketh man’, meaning that when you have good manners you

are well on your way to being a well-rounded man (or woman).

Having good manners is not just about saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ at the appropriate times, or, whether

or not you remember to say ‘good morning’ on entering a bus, as many Guyanese do.

While these good traits are certainly commendable and worthwhile, having good manners goes a little deeper and has a lot to do with acquiring and showing genuine respect for your fellowman.

So many of our young people do not say ‘thank you’ or show any type of appreciation for things that have been done, or are being done for them: and when they are given a gift, they are unaware that the correct thing to do is thank the person who gave the gift -- regardless of the value or importance of the gift.

Some children are never taught how to be thoughtful of others or how to feel and show genuine gratitude when someone has been thoughtful towards them. We often hear the cliché, ‘it’s the thought that counts’, but with some folk, the ‘thought’ behind a person’s positive or nice gesture, doesn’t even register, let alone ‘count.’

The ideal environment for growing children is one where they are able to internalise the positive values portrayed by their parents, as these values can see them through life. But in some cases, parents may need to ‘teach’ their children that gratitude and good manners are just two of many virtues which will help them along the way.

How parents interact with their children is linked closely to the lack of manners that children tend to portray, as it is more likely to be the parents who would have condoned the negative behaviour to some extent in the first place. This may have come about through parents indulging their children’s behaviour, rather than ‘pulling them up’ or letting them know, that ingratitude to those who are considerate toward you, is unacceptable.

Maybe some parents even failed to explain that humility and thankfulness are two desirable qualities that they should seek, adopt and

nurture: regardless of how poor or affluent they might be, valuable assets cannot be bought or sold. .

People sometimes find excuses for children who grow without the guidance of a parent. If they fail to show gratitude or forget their manners, they say, ‘these children grow without training’. But this is only a myth as children who grow with both parents can still fail to have good manners and vice versa.

Another thing that people tend to say about young people and their lack of gratitude is, ‘that is how young people stay nowadays…’ but this is not true, and neither should anyone accept that ‘bad manners’ is a common trait of this present generation.

Children portray the behaviour that is taught in their households and accepted by their families, but that doesn’t automatically make it the correct behaviour, or that another adult has no right to correct a child discreetly. Any adult who has good intentions and the right approach can do the job, because ‘good manners’ is something that children need to possess.

The onus is on parents (and all conscious adults) to teach children how to be genuinely grateful, considerate and thoughtful of others; to show respect and to be courteous, sincere and compassionate. These fundamental values seem to be ebbing away as parents and caregivers become busier than ever and children are left to their own vices and devices, from which they receive very little guidance.

If you have children, or you work with children, do not overlook this simple fact: adults really do need to teach them some of the most basic lessons in life.

Harmon commissions bridge in Sophia

STUDENTS and residents of ‘A’ Field, Sophia also called Block ‘X’ Liliendaal, are now equipped with a new bridge-crossing, thanks to the contribution of Minister of State Joseph Harmon.

Just over a month ago, President of the South Liliendaal Progressive Development Group, James Hermanstein, had visited the Guyana Chronicle to speak about several safety issues being experienced in his community.

He revealed that after relaying the concerns to Minister Harmon in May, the minister donated $200,000 from his own pocket towards the construction of a 35ft x

4ft walkway linking Block ‘X’ to Pattenson.

The money was used to assist in the purchasing of materials for the bridge, as the previous make-shift crossing was unstable, while several persons were being robbed due to overgrown bushes at the location.

During the small commissioning ceremony attended by members of the community, Harmon encouraged the residents to continue their cooperative spirit with the government for the betterment of their communities.

ment. In this case, it was a personal contribution, but I believe that generally speaking this is the way government wishes to operate where the community and the state partner to do things.

“Because the fact of the matter is that when you are involved in the project yourselves, you tend to care it, when you are involved in the project yourselves, you tend to ensure that it is properly constructed…I know that this bridge will serve the commu-

nity better,” he said.

In commending the organisers, Harmon encouraged them to continue to press for the other issues in their communities to be addressed.

According to Hermanstein, some of these which remain include insufficient street lights and overgrown bushes which contribute to criminal activities and deplorable street conditions which discourage taxi drivers from doing busi-

ness in the area.

“The security situation that is here, we will have to address it. We cannot operate in a society where our citizens live in fear…where they live in a situation where security is a major concern. We would like to address that and I want to assure you that I will bring to the Minister of Public Security’s attention the points which you have raised here this morning.

“I want to assure you that I will bring to the attention of the Minister of Public

Hermanstein and a few others came into South Liliendaal as pioneers in 1992 and did their own land-clearing, canal-cleaning and demarcations as community members who believe in service for the benefit of all.

Russian guard assaults miner A PRIVATE Russian security guard is accused of assaulting and pulling his gun on a Guyanese miner during a recent incident at Quart Stone, Cuyuni, Region Seven.

Usually, the police or officials of the Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC) carry out this function and not a private

The Russian guards are also accused of handcuffing a miner to the roof of a shed and beating him.

The circumstances surrounding that incident are unclear, but miners are calling on the police and the Ministry of Natural Resources to investigate these incidents and give them justice.

Despite knowing his right, in an effort to maintain the peace, the miner complied and provided documentation but this did not dissuade the armed guard from becoming physical.

Garbage receptacles for minibus operators

THE Ministry of Communities presented 900 garbage bins to the United Minibus Union (UMU) last week to encourage proper garbage disposal among minibus operators and their passengers.

Some 105 of these bins were distributed on Friday to operators at the University of Guyana (UG)-Industry; Beterverwagting (BV) and Georgetown-Mahaica bus parks.

“The UMU recognises that public transportation can be a very important medium through which the need to have and to maintain a clean city or country can be realised. We will ask that our members politely inform their passengers that a bin is in the bus and request that they utilise same,” UMU President Eon Andrews said in a statement.

For some time, Andrews has been pushing for well-organised minibus parks in Guyana with the UG branch of the UMU becoming the first group of minibus operatives to be-

Fire strikes at Pegasus GUESTS and staff of the Pegasus Hotel, Georgetown, were late Sunday night forced to evacuate the hotel as a fire in the hotel’s kitchen caused the premises to be engulfed in smoke.

Reports from guests at the hotel indicate that there were no fire safety measures in place. In particular, guests recounted to Guyana Chronicle that there was no sounding of the fire alarm and fire exits were all locked.

When Guyana Chronicle arrived at the hotel, guests and staff were seen in the lobby area, some wearing masks as firefighters attempted to quell the situation in the kitchen.

Among those affected by the fire were children and the elderly.

“I was on the second floor trying to get out. When I ran down, there was a big padlock at the exit.

Then I ran up to get my children. When I tried to go to the fourth floor, there was a padlock on the door and chain… I had to come through the smoke. It is because of Jesus that we are alive,” a guest recounted to the media.

He believes that action should be taken against hotels that are noncompliant with fire safety regulations.

“Safety is very, very important,” he stated as he stood by his wife and children. The overseas guest said he was banging on doors trying to get some persons out of their rooms.

“I was trying to get people out, there is fire, come out, and come out… now we had to use the elevator. The elevator is a poor thing when you have a fire,” Fire Prevention Officer Andrew Holder told reporters that the fire resulted from a deep fry, “either accidentally or willfully left on” which became so overheated that it ignited the insulation for the heat extractor which

created a smoke logged environment. “ We m a n a g e d t o quickly put out that fire and initiated some form of ventilation. The occupants’ anxiety about relatives being left in rooms up there is understandable. We tried our best to get them out of the rooms,” said Holder who noted that the fire was contained to the kitchen area.

Two floors above the ground floor area were engulfed in smoke, he disclosed while noting that the fire at the hotel comes immediately after the Guyana Fire Service conducted a training session for hotels. That forum was poorly attended.

“Some of the same stuff we dealt with at that training occurred here tonight.

ExxonMobil provides ‘tunnel’ of information for Guyanese

PERSONS who visited the Giftland Mall on Saturday were able to gather a wealth of knowledge about the operations of ExxonMobil.

“We decided to set up a tunnel experience at Giftland where persons were able to learn about the company’s operations here,” said ExxonMobil’s Community Relations and Communications Manager Nicholas Yearwood in an invited comment.

While it is understandable that everyone would not be able to go offshore, the company could still give persons a two-dimen-

sional look at some of the things that are involved in the oil-production process.

There were photographs of important aspects of the operations such as the drillships, subsea equipment and so forth.

Yearwood said it was an interactive session and that persons could look forward to more outreach programmes soon.

In early January, the U.S. oil company had also discovered oil offshore Guyana at its Ranger-1 well, adding to its previous discoveries since 2015.

countered approximately 230 feet of high-quality, oil-bearing reservoir, located some 60 miles northwest of its Liza phase one project within the Stabroek Block.

The Stabroek Block is 6.6 million acres (26,800 square kilometres). Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited is operator and holds 45 percent interest in the Stabroek Block. Hess Guyana Exploration Ltd. holds 30 percent interest and CNOOC Nexen Petroleum Guyana Limited holds 25 percent interest.

Holder closer to top 10 in ICC bowling charts LONDON, (CMC)– West Indies captain Jason Holder has jumped one place in the latest ICC Test bowling rankings which were released on Sunday.

Ollie Pope, 20, replaces Malan in England squad for Lord’s Test DAWID Malan became the latest casualty of England’s new policy to promote youth when he was dropped for the second Test against India and replaced

Pope becomes the third 20 year old picked by Ed Smith since his appointment as national selector in April while Malan joins Mark Stoneman as the latest player from last winter’s Ashes hammering to be cast aside.

As Pope is replacing Malan it can be assumed he will bat at four even though he appears at six for Surrey in championship cricket.

Chris Woakes is back in the squad in place of Ben Stokes and is fully fit again. Moeen Ali is in the 13 and England will again be tempted to pick two spinners on what will be a dry Lord’s surface after so much hot weather in London this summer.

Pope is friends with Sam Curran, his fellow 20 yearold from Surrey, and if he shares the allrounder’s nerveless, calm character then England should have no con-

cerns about throwing him in to face India and bat against Ravi Ashwin, a challenge like no other he has faced in county cricket.

Pope has only played 15 first class matches but averages 63.25 and this season has had a huge impact at Surrey with 742 runs in 12 innings to help his county reach the top of the first division.

“He is not dissimilar to Joe Root. He has all the modern traits. He is a 360 degree player in oneday cricket but he has a good method, technique and head on his shoulders in first-class cricket,” said Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket.

“He is learning. For any 20 year old it is massive, he will be nervous. You just hope that he can control the nerves so his feet are moving freely, his mind is uncluttered and it just becomes a game of cricket and he does not think ‘I am playing for England at Lord’s in front of 32,000 people against Virat Kohli’.

“Over the last 18 months he has made massive strides,” said Stewart.

“We threw him in at 17 for his debut to do a man’s job in a 50 over semi-final against Yorkshire and he has not looked back.

We sent him away to Australia last year for grade cricket in Sydney because it is good to have unstructured winters away for people who have been in very structured environments. He did very well and when someone at 19 rips up grade competition

records it speaks volumes.

Since coming back he has become a consistent player this year.”

Malan who looked lost at Edgbaston after two batting failures and three dropped catches at slip and at 30 will probably know his Test career is over, although he could still be a white ball player for England, a format of the game that probably better suits his strengths.

Smith’s verdict on his batting was damning. “Dawid Malan drops out of the squad for Lord’s. Dawid has not found his best rhythm this season and it may be that his game is better suited to overseas conditions” Trevor Bayliss, the head coach, is always reluctant to drop players but clearly now defers to Smith who is intent on giving a young captain like Joe Root a young team to mould his way with Dom Bess, Curran and Pope among his first call ups.

Pope will not be able to believe his luck, although spending some time with En-

gland during the Lord’s Test against Pakistan has given him a small insight to what this week will be like.

“It’s exciting”, he said.

“It’s been awesome seeing Sammy (Curran) go this week and it makes you realise that you can come in as 20- year old and have a big impact. I got to know the guys a bit (at Lord’s) and also, I now know what it’s like on the morning of the first Test at Lord’s.

I know the hotel we’ll stay in the night before, I know where I need to be and when I need to be there.

Trinidad ‘trample’ Guyana 8 – 0 at CFU Boys U-14 Challenge Series …Guyana to play Curaçao on Wednesday

GUYANA got off to a shaky start in their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U-14 Challenge Series campaign in Curaçao, after falling hard 8 – 0, to Trinidad and Tobago in their first game on Saturday at the Ergilio Hata Stadium.

The Twin Island Republic was led by a double from Abdul-Qudoos Hypolite and a goal each from Ja-Shawn Thomas, Nathaniel James, Dantaye Gilbert, Jaheim Marshall, Molik Khan and Joshua Mason.

Prior to the team’s departure, coach Bryan Jo-

seph said the nature of this tournament is “not about winning and deciding who the champion is, but it is focussed on the development of young players across the Region, including Guyana.

The structure of the tournament is set to facilitate that.”

According to Joseph, the idea is “to go out there and be competitive but, in the same vein, we want to ensure that development takes place. This group needs the experience. I don’t think any member from this group ever played outside of Guyana,

at the front of a huge crowd or packed stadium, so this tournament will seek to have them become acquainted with that. This group will be the core of our U-15 who will participate in the Concacaf U-15 Championship in 2019; so this is the beginning of this process.”

Next up for Guyana is a clash against the host nation, Curaçao on Wednesday, while the Bryan Joseph-coached team will close their Group C matches against Bonaire on August 10 and Aruba on August 12.

DIRECTOR of Sport, Mr. Christopher Jones on Friday last , in his address at the launch of the inaugural BV/Triumph 8th of May Movement Emancipation Cohesion Football League, said that it is “a Movement.”

He posited that the empowerment organization was alive and active, and that the entity was not just at the beginning or formulation stages of its conceptualized plan, but is an actual body in movement.

In addition, Jones also indicated that by request of the movement, he had earlier in the year, on behalf of the National Sports Commission, given floodlights for its use at the BV playground.

He recognized that the lights were used during the village anniversary celebrations, which were hosted by the BV/Triumph 8th of May Movement in May 2018, and expressed his delight in the fact that the movement has once again demonstrated their purposeful intent of utilising the donated floodlights, with their now dubbed Emancipation Cohesion Football League.

He also pointed out that input from all stakeholders is very important to the success of the league, and that government would like to see more inter-institutional engagements in sporting activities that bring out the best talents in youths.

Jones suggested that it is hoped that the experiences gained from this event will reinforce sport as a necessary movement for change, and that aspect of the event would

forge new networks and friendships that would spiral the growth of the BV/Triumph Emancipation Cohesion Football League and the movement itself.

Meanwhile, chairperson of the movement, Latecia Stuart was highly appreciative of the sponsors, singling out Bakewell, Lloyd W.P Britton Enterprise, Gladstone O Benjamin, the Ministry of Agriculture, agencies, GLDA, NAREI and MMA, and Restoration Opportunities through Christ (ROC). AS part of their move to foster camaraderie among the various arms of the police force, sub division number 2 and Court Superintendent’s Office of Brickdam contested a friendly T10 affair.

Played over the weekend, the event is also seen as recreation for the Force’s ranks and was organised by superintendent Mahendra Singh.

Batting first, number 2 sub division made 110 for 5 wickets from their 10 overs and in response, the opposition could only muster 98 for 7 off their allotment.

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, (CMC) – Seasoned left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd produced a six-wicket haul to undermine Leeward Islands and set up Guyana’s impressive 10-wicket victory, on the final day of the opening round of matches in the Regional Under-19 Championship here Sunday.

Resuming the day on 22 without loss in their second innings, still requiring a further 91 runs to make Guyana bat again, the Leewards folded meekly for 114 at the Arnos Vale Stadium.

Mikyle Louis top-scored with 31 while Joshua Grant finished on 26 not out but it was Nedd’s six for 30 which made the difference.

Jamaica were stumbling on 87 for five but McCarthy, who faced 71 balls and struck seven fours and a six, put on 47 for the sixth wicket with Kimani Wilson (17 not out) to stall Barbados’ progress.

At Park Hill, Navin Bidaisee and Christian Thurton grabbed the opportunity to chalk up half-centuries as the rain-hit match between Trinidad and Tobago and Windward Islands ended in a predictable draw.

Bidaisee made 87 and Thurton, 75, while Leonardo Julien chimed in with 46 and Avinash Mahabirsingh, 32.

Resuming the day on one without loss in reply to the Windwards’ 238, T&T flourished as Bidaisee put on 46 for the first wicket with Cephas Cooper (22) before adding 112 for the second wicket with Julien, who belted five fours and three sixes off 102 balls.

Bidaisee, meanwhile, faced 154 deliveries and stroked 15 fours. Thurton, who gathered eight fours and two sixes in a 113-ball innings, posted 68 for the sixth wicket with Mahabirsingh.

Left-arm spinner Simeon Gerson claimed five for 82.

Virat Kohli has scored 22 centuries in 67 Tests

VIRAT Kohli has become the number one Test batsman in the world following his century in India’s 31run defeat by England at Edgbaston.

The India captain, who has moved to the top of the International Cricket Council rankings, scored 149 not out in the first innings and 51 in the second.

Kohli, 29, has ended former Australia skipper Steve Smith’s 32-month reign as the top Test batsman.

Smith is currently serving a 12-month international ban for ball-tampering.

Kohli, who has scored 22 tons in 67 matches, said

his first century in England “does not matter” after defeat on Saturday.

He is the first Indian to top the rankings since Sachin Tendulkar in June 2011.
