The WPA is one of several parties constituting the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) coalition section of the government.

Other parties include the People’s National Congress (PNC), the National Front Alliance (NFA), the Guyana Action Party (GAP) and the Justice For All Party (JFAP). The APNU was formed in 2011 and then joined forces with the Alliance For Change (AFC) in 2015 to contest elections that year.

Ally said despite orchestrated rumours and untruths regarding his health and competence, “I, on behalf of the PNCR, would like to indicate that he is ‘fit and proppa’ for a second term and the PNCR endorses his candidature.”

Ally said the party looks forward to being under his guidance for a second term and urged Guyanese to vote for vision, development, cordiality, selfless work and enjoying the “good life.” Additionally, Ally said President Granger was

She said Granger has been tried for the past three and a half years and has proven his competence to lead Guyana for a second term.

For its part at a recent news conference, the AFC asserted that it is not in a weakened state at the coalition’s negotiating table, nor is it unprepared for a

‘Radio Essequibo coming’ … PM announces during visit to Region 2

WITH government’s commitment to connect Guyanese from across the various regions, Prime Minister Moses Nagamotoo on Friday announced that a new radio station for Region Two will soon become a reality.

During his visit to the region, the prime minister and his team inspected the building at Cotton Field that will be used to transmit the signals to other regions.

His team included Chief Executive Officer of the National Communication Network (NCN), Enrico Woolford, along with Communication Officer for the Office of the Prime Minister, Dr. Rovin Deodat, and Radio Broadcaster, Michela Abrams-Ali. A new transmitter was installed at the building. The radio station, “Radio Essequibo”, is the seventh radio station established by the Government of Guyana. “The radio station will ensure that all our people are connected.

There will be a two-way communication, you can also broadcast your own programmes and now Essequibians can listen to what is happening around the country in the various regions,” prime minister said.

Regional Executive Officer, Denis Jaikarran, commended government’s efforts in establishing the radio station. He said it is a positive move for the region and will create opportunities for young

persons who are considering communications as a career. Jaikarran said that the station will not only create employment, but will highlight the region’s performance to others. President of the Essequibo Chambers of Commerce, Sueann Suenaryan, also saw the establishment of the new radio station as a boost for the region.

Suenaryan said that business community can also get the opportunity to advertise and to keep updated with the current affairs around Guyana.

RAID project to help transform Mocha

MINISTER of Finance, Winston Jordan, on Friday said the economic prospects are good for farmers in Mocha, East Bank Demerara, who are part of the Rural Agricultural Infrastructure Development (RAID) programme.

The $318.6M Caribbean Development Fund (CDF) project is aimed at fostering additional growth in the agriculture sector. Continuing a series of visits to communities financed by the RAID programme, Minister Jordan today visited the East Bank Demerara village of Mocha to deliver some plants to farmers and observe the progress made on the

project.

“I am very pleased with the progress made so far, and I am very pleased to have met a number of the farmers and the villagers. We are going to see to what extent in this budget, we can assist them.”

Minister Jordan said the government wants to see the project replicated. He encouraged farmers to get on board with companies such as Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), which has indicated its intention to expand it juice production.

“I like some of the ideas that are coming out. They are thinking forward about the preservation of fruit and establishing

Human skull found at Wismar

RANKS of ‘ E’ Division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a human skull on the beach line, which is in proximity to the Wismar-Mackenzie bridge.

An immediate search for the other body parts was done, but the ranks came up empty- handed.

The ranks then took the skull to the Linden Hospital Complex mortuary, where it is awaiting an examination by the Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.

This is expected to be conducted on Monday, February 4, 2019. Commander of ‘E’ Division Linden Lord said that checks were made of “missing persons” reports, but all showed that the persons had been found.

No arrest has yet been made, but an investigation is in progress .

The Agriculture Sector Development Unit has distributed some 1,200-coconut seedling and 2,402 citrus plants to over 24 farmers. A weekly delivery schedule is maintained and will conclude by the end

of March. The ASDU, which is the unit responsible, has conducted a series of assessments and consultations with farmers and residents at Buxton and a number of persons indicated their readiness to return to farming, provided that improvements are made to the existing D&I system.

Communities such as Mocha, Buxton, Triumph and Ithaca have been identified for urgent intervention, as residents over the last 30 years have been experiencing extreme flooding of farmlands due to poor drainage systems. (DPI)

President’s comprehensive defence policy

PRESIDENT David Granger recently delivered the feature address at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Officers conference.

The address was the first of its kind given by any President of Guyana and it was a clear and brilliant exposition of Guyana’s National Defence Policy.

He defined the policy as “A Defence Policy aimed at strengthening the Defence Force’s role in deterring aggression, defending the territory and promoting economic development...It implies that all instruments of national power --- economic, military, political, social and technological will be employed in the interest of national security.”

The President gave examples of external aggression which the GDF had to deal with and these included the Rupununi Rebellion and Suriname’s attempt to occupy the New River Triangle. He also mentioned instances when Venezuela intruded into Guyana’s EEZ harassing boats engaged in oil exploration.

Defending the country against aggressive military incursions was not the only aggression the GDF has to deal with. In the President’s words... “illegal mining, illegal logging, illegal arms, narcotics, people and wildlife trafficking and the smuggling of

precious metals have continued and have to stop. Citizens have been killed. Communities, particularly those living in our frontier villages, must be made safe from transnational crime.”

The President then dealt with defence reorganisation. Such reorganisation will consist of several elements which together will create a better organised, modern and stronger force: The reserve force, the Guyana People’s Militia, has been fast growing and in a short time it is expected to be 50% of the strength of the regular force. These reservists will maintain a permanent presence in every region.

The Guyana National Cadet Corps (GNCC) was resuscitated last year. Six schools in five Regions have so far participated. The Corps is aimed at enhancing skills and leadership abilities, building character and instilling the values and standards of civic responsibility among youth. The President himself and several other top brass of the GDF were members of the Queen’s College Cadet Corps.

In addition to reorganising the Marine Corps, the President touched on what is being done in the Air Corps, the Intelligence Corps and the Engineer Corps. In the President’s words: “The Air Corps fleet was last

I FEEL a greater sense of pride today being Guyanese. Yes, a dual citizen I am, but I am Guyanese and no one can and will ever deny me the right to be Guyanese.

I am proud of President David Granger who, through his commitment to democracy and the rule of law never sought to influence or intimidate the judiciary into ruling one way or the other on this no-confidence motion. Guyana has shown the world today that it is a

year augmented with the acquisition of light reconnaissance aircraft. Light transport aircraft are to be procured this year, 2019.

The Intelligence Corps and the Signal Corps have been reformed to enhance surveillance and communications. The personnel strength of the Intelligence Corps has been increased. The Signal Corps has benefitted from the acquisition of new radio equipment and personnel training.

The Engineer Corps received equipment to increase the force’s agility, improve its responsiveness to eliminate climate hazards, promote greater stability among frontline communities and foster defence cooperation.

The Engineer Corps in 2018 worked alongside the Brazilian army’s Sixth Batalhao de Engenharia de Construcao to drill wells in the Rupununi region....The force is set to improve its physical infrastructure, to acquire drones for border surveillance, inshore patrol vessels and engineering and transport equipment.”

The President then pointed to some on-going operations which are an integral part of the defence policy. These are the “Frontline village policy” where the Defence Force continues to cooperate with frontier villages to protect our national territory and national resources and repel

mature nation where the judiciary enjoys full independence free of political interference. Kudos to the chief justice as well.

It is my hope that Guyana will yet again demonstrate its maturity, when the government and opposition confer and agree on a timeframe for elections in conformity with the constitution; and that is logical and will provide for a well-planned and managed process.

There were the naysayers who claimed

threats to human safety. Referring to other operations, the President mentioned “Operation Armadillo to respond to threats posed by criminal gangs along our borders and to protect frontline villages . . . The operation resulted in a reduction of reports of attacks by foreign ‘Sindicatos.’

Operation Ocean Guard exercised continuous aerial and maritime surveillance of our coastline and territorial waters . . . It resulted in a decrease in incidents of piracy and decrease of contraband smuggling and drug and people trafficking. Exercises Greenheart and Ironweed will be modified to emphasise importance of long-range jungle patrols.”

Dovetailing with the Defence Force Policy is the continuance and strengthening of cooperation with friendly countries and the great social benefit of national integration strengthening national unity.

This publication sees President Granger’s National Defence Policy as creating an army which is efficient, educated, well-equipped and modern and though small, would be able to successfully meet external and internal threats and to encourage help and cooperation from friendly countries.

Some things that concern me about early elections Dear Editor, THE no-confidence vote on December 21 has thrust the issue of General and Regional Elections into the spotlight.

While the government is pursuing legal options and interpretations of the event and its consequences, the opposition insists that irrespective of the government seeking legal interpretations, elections should be held within the time stip-

ulated in the constitution.

Mr. Editor, assuming the government is not successful in its legal pursuit, there are issues that concern me greatly.

One of my concerns regarding the vote on December 21, 2018 and the 90-day stipulation is the possibility of going to elections without allowing persons who have come of age to vote, but did not get an opportunity to register.

They will not have the

opportunity to vote. These are youth who were 15 years old in 2015 and are now 18 years old in 2019.

The population data tells us that youth (persons under 40) will comprise 70 per cent of the population in 2020. The number that may be disenfranchised is not clear, but this could be tens of thousands of citizens who would essentially be disenfranchised. That represents a large portion of citizens that will not

be able to exercise their constitutional right to elect their own leaders. Another issue is the usual GECOM claims-and-objections period, whereby persons can change their addresses and thus vote at a polling station closer to where they currently live.

If we don’t allow houseto-house registration and the claims and objections, it could result in a low voter turnout, similar to the LGEs. If we are aware of

this, and insist on going to elections, is that tantamount to voter suppression?

The circumstances that have caused General and Regional Elections to be in the national discussion are already entangled in controversy and have split the nation. I believe that we must ensure that the process of holding elections be held to an even higher than normal standard.

Any discrepancy, any disenfranchisement could

split us further and plunge us into a state none of us would want to contemplate. Editor, in exercising your constitutional right, should not infringe on my constitutional rights, nor should it infringe on the rights of youth to participate in free and fair elections.

SOCU forensic analyst explains reason for resigning Dear Editor, IN light of the fervent speculation on social media and the mainstream media about the reason for me tendering my resignation from the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) to the Minister of Public Security last week, I wish to begin and end my contribution to the whole matter with the following statement: First, and foremost, I wish to make it clear that I possess verifiable undergraduate and post-graduate degrees awarded by recognised UK universities. My academic qualifications meet and exceed the requirements for the work I was undertaking at SOCU. SOCU’s Head and the Minister of Public Security have both seen original evidence of my academic qualifications before my offer to resign and I have no reservations for their authenticity to be verified with the recognised British universities that awarded them.

To be clear: my resignation from SOCU -- a care-

fully considered decision -- is in no way related to my refusal to present my academic qualifications. To avoid compromising my personal and professional commitments to obligations of Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure, I thought it best to tender my resignation from SOCU (effective 22 February 2019 inclusive of my contractual 1 month’s notice).

In 2017, I was invited to assist SOCU’s forensic investigative capacity based on my solid international experience (spanning a number of countries). I never told anyone I worked concurrently in ’22 countries’). My contract running to the end of January 2020 was renewed as recent as in November 2018. Over the course of the intervening period, my skills and experience have enhanced the forensic investigative arm of SOCU to the point where it is now receiving significant Mutual Assistance Cooperation from third countries in the pursuit of financial crimes committed against the people of Guyana.

Even in the face of reported surveillance and threats against me and my family, I have worked diligently to gather substantial and compelling evidence that led to the DPP instituting charges in several high- profile matters currently engaging the courts.

My professionalism, impartiality, objectivity, completely apolitical and non-politically partisan manner to ensure clear conclusions to support fair justice have been hallmarks of all of the investigations I have dealt with at SOCU. Anyone familiar with the pursuit of internationally complex financial crimes would readily recognise that its success requires diligence, an exceptional eye for detail, good understanding of how international banking systems and financial markets operate and last, but not least, enormous patience.

Notwithstanding this, my only concern now is that SOCU’s hard work is about to show fruit and SOCU is on the cusp of delivering hard financial evidence of

Chief justice may have erred in confidence-vote judgment

Dear Editor,

ON January 31, 2018, Guyana’s Chief Justice the Hon Roxane George-Wiltshire, upheld the constitutionality of the December 21, 2018 no- confidence vote against the APNU+AFC coalition government of Guyana.

The Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) disagrees with the ruling of the Madam Chief Justice. After careful deliberation with our legal counsel and attorneys in Guyana, CGID has concluded that the chief justice erred in her interpretation of Article 156.3 (a) and (b) of the Guyana constitution by ignoring the intent of the framers in its construction. We believe the ruling is “activist” in nature, as rather than interpret the intent of the provision, which is the role of the court, the chief justice apparently reshaped Article 156.3 (a) and (b), thereby rendering the provision, as originally constructed, unenforceable.

CGID also believes that the ruling is contradictory. Madam Chief Justice held that the election of a member of the National Assembly can only be challenged pursuant to an election petition within 28 days of the said election. Consequently, absent an elections petition and the mandated statutory provision for such having expired, she affirmed that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain a challenge to the validity of Charrandass Persaud’s 2015 election to the National Assembly. Ac-

cordingly, she declined to nullify Persaud’s election. Notwithstanding the lack of jurisdiction, the court proceeded, nonetheless, to declare that Persaud as a consequence of his dual citizenship was ineligible for election to the National Assembly, and that his presence therein was a breach of the constitution.

Effectively, the chief justice disqualified Charrandass Persaud as a candidate for said election in which she held the court lacked jurisdiction to review.

We also believe that the chief justice exceeded the authority of the court by reinterpreting the “absolute majority” entrenchment elucidated by Sir Dennis Byron, then Chief Justice of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), in his judgement in Attorney General v Cedric Richardson (2018 CCJ-17-AJ).

Moreover, the chief justice’s declination to stay her judgement pending appeal is extraordinary and enigmatic.

The issues we have enumerated are fertile grounds for appeal. CGID therefore supports the government’s decision to appeal the judgement of the chief justice in keeping with the rule of law. We look forward to the intervention of the Guyana Court of Appeal and the CCJ. Furthermore, the CGID notes the chief justice’s order disqualifying members of the National Assembly who possess dual citizenship. Although such disqualification See page 8

a mind-blowing nature; this development has emerged that could very well affect the outcomes of several compelling matters presently engaging the courts.

It appears as though my relentless pursuit (with increasing success) of tracking the evidence of acts of international cross-border financial crimes does not sit well

with my detractors, as there appears to be an emerging high-stakes, threatening and sinister plot beginning to be played out, of which I will play no part.

I wish to thank the many colleagues and stakeholders locally and internationally who have contributed to SOCU’s fight against financial

crimes and corruption and who have reached out to me to offer words of support and encouragement. I will be making no further comments on this matter.

PSC urges compliance with CJ ruling

Dear Editor,

THE chief justice has ruled that the no-confidence motion passed in the National Assembly on 21st December, 2018, is lawful and valid. The Private Sector Commission (PSC) calls upon our political parties and, indeed the entire nation, to respect this deci-

sion.

The PSC, therefore, now calls upon the Guyana Elections Commission to fulfil its constitutional obligation to hold itself ready to conduct general elections as is required by the constitution as a result of the no-confidence motion, that is, within 90 days of the motion, unless otherwise extended

by a two-thirds majority of Parliament.

The commission further calls upon GECOM to immediately declare its position on this question as a matter of public interest and necessity.

was not pursuant to an election petition, as the chief justice’s judgement seems to mandate, her order effectively disqualifies several sitting members of the National Assembly on both the opposition and government benches, including several government ministers, from being members of Parliament.

Particularly, unless the Guyana Court of Appeal or the CCJ grants a stay of the judgment, government min-

isters with dual citizenship ceased to be ministers as of January 31, 2019.

Consequently, CGID urges His Excellency President David Granger to contemplate an immediate reassignment of ministerial responsibilities to ensure the continuity of government and delivery of services to the people of Guyana.

Although the CGID disagrees with the judgment of the Madam Chief Justice, subject to appeal, we respect the said

judgment as a function of our democratic system of government which ensures that the rule of law is supreme. Further, we affirm the probity and distinguished service of the Honourable Chief Justice, and eschew any attack on her integrity and honour.

Diamond hotelier guilty of illegal firearms charges THE proprietor of Diamond Hotel and Bar was, on Friday handed a twoyear suspended sentence

by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty, after being found guilty on two firearms-related charges.

Freeman Fordyce, 43, of Collingswood Avenue, Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, was on trial at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He was found guilty of the charges which read that, on May 5, 2017, he had a 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol, along with 15 live rounds of 9mm ammunition in his possession, without being a licensed firearm holder.

It was reported that Fordyce was nabbed with the firearm in his crotch, at his jewellery and pawnshop, located at George and Princess Streets, Werk-en-Rust His lawyer, Nigel

Freeman Fordyce Hughes, told the court that his client was a well-known businessman and begged the court for leniency. The police prosecutor asked the magistrate to consider the nature of the offence and the fact that Fordyce should have known better. The magistrate fined Fordyce $60,000 along with the twoyear suspended sentence.

Last November, Fordyce was charged and placed before the court following a video which went viral on social media, showing him assaulting Police Inspector Prem Narine at Diamond Hotel. He is currently on trial before Magistrate Leron Daly for that offence.

According to reports, the video footage which was posted online showed Fordyce resisting being searched and then punching Inspector Narine in the face.

The incident occurred outside the Diamond Hotel and Bar, located in George Street, Werk-en-Rust.

The police subsequently removed a number of women, including Venezuelans, from the premises.

The ranks reportedly searched Fordyce’s club while conducting a trafficking- in- persons investigation.

Police weighing threats against city schools THE person or persons who have been making threats via social media platforms over the last two weeks to School of the Nations and who have now moved to level those threats against government secondary schools, have recently called for the police to reach out to them.

However, in an interview with Commissioner of Police Leslie James, he was asked about this request by the person or persons and the commissioner made it clear that the threat at this point is not that serious to cause the police to go down a particular line. He was at the time speaking after a meeting with Education Minister Nicolette Henry on the issue after she summoned him and his key officers on Tuesday to discuss security measures.

“The more recent post, we have been able to get that information and we are examining it; we don’t see a threat that serious at this point for us to go in a particular direction.” James said.

The commissioner’s comments came even as the force pulled in at least four individuals-- both past and present students of the school-- for questioning in relation to the threats.

He said that the persons who were questioned were cooperating and that the

questioning of each of them was done in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act, which dictates that an adult be present with them during their questioning.

Further, the force is also fully utilising its Cybercrime Unit to aid in the investigation, even as they seek to question a few more students. The media were also told by the head of the force that the organisation has sought and received other help as it continues this investigation. He however did not get into much detail in that regard.

On the issue of the first threat which was made against the school, James noted that as soon as the police were contacted certain measures and actions were immediately taken.

So far there is reportedly no linkage between the shooting of the school’s director Dr. Brian O’Toole and the threats being levelled against the school, the commissioner had stated. However, given the fact that he was shot during this period and moreover, that he is the director of the said school against which the threats are being levelled, the force is not overlooking that aspect.

James stressed that based on the description given to the detectives by Dr. Brian O’Toole after he was shot, they are looking for two different persons.

‘I did it for my children’ … Charlestown man jailed for five years, fined $8.4M for drug trafficking

“I KNOW it was a bad choice, but it was a choice I had to make when it comes to my children.”

Those were the words of a 58-year-old man, who was on Friday sentenced to five years imprisonment and fined $8.4M, in relation to the recent drug ‘bust’ at St Stephen’s Street, Charles-

town, Georgetown.

Courtney Demonick, 58, of 82 St. Stephen’s Street, Charlestown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus on Friday and confessed to two drug-trafficking charges.

Particulars of the first charge alleged that, on January 29, 2019, at St Stephen’s

Street, Charlestown, he had 89.23 kilogrammes of cannabis and 20 grammes of cocaine in his possession, for the purpose of trafficking.

The second charge alleged that, on the same day and location, Demonick had 1.564 kilogrammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. He

pleaded guilty to the charge.

Dominic was charged jointly with Ebony Craig, 23, of 17 Lamaha Springs, Sophia, but opted to take the rap in return for the charges to be dropped against his co-accused Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) prosecutor Konyo Sandiford made an

Ebony Craig application for the charge against Craig to be withdrawn and the Acting Chief Magistrate granted the request.

According to the evidence, Demonick was under surveillance by CANU ranks and was seen coming out of his lot 83 St Stephen’s Street, Charlestown home with a black plastic bag and taking same into a minibus.

Sandiford told the court that Demonick went back into the house and came back out with another black plastic bag and took it to motor car PPP 3008.

CANU ranks intercepted Demonick and found 1.564

kilogrammes of cannabis inside the motor car.

The ranks, after obtaining a search warrant, went into Demonick’s home and found a large quantity of cannabis and cocaine laid out in the bedroom and the kitchen floor. Craig was also found in the house.

In court, Demonick said that his four-year-old son suffers from bronchitis and that he has financial needs to take care of him.

“I know it was a bad choice, but it was a choice I had to make when it comes to my children,” the father of four told the court.

The acting chief magistrate told Demonick that she would be deducting 12 months from his sentence, since he cooperated with CANU during the investigation and did not waste the court’s time.

For the first charge, Demonick was sentenced to four years imprisonment along with a fine of $8.4M and for the second, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment along with a $50,000 fine.

The sentences will, however, run concurrently.

Venezuelan, two others in court for ganja trafficking MAGISTRATE Zamilla Ally-Seepaul on Friday, at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, remanded three men, including a Venezuelan, to prison for trafficking cannabis.

Siddique Karahmad, 27 of Annglet, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara; Emroy Caravaio, 20, of Mabaruma and Ricardo Garcia of Venezuela, were jointly charged for trafficking 32.05 kilograms of cannabis on January 31, 2019, at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo.

Karahmad and Caravaio, both Guyanese, denied the charge when it was read to them. Garcia, had the charge read to him with the aid of interpreter and said that he did not know if he was guilty or not guilty of the offence, but requested a lawyer.

Magistrate Ally-Seepaul entered a not-guilty plea on Garcia’s behalf based upon his explanation. Karahmad was represented by attorney-at-law, Marcel Bobb, who made an application for bail on the grounds that his client was hired to ‘pick up’ Garcia and Caravaio, but was intercepted by CANU when he arrived.

Custom Anti-narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Kunyo Sandiford, objected to the trio being released on bail, citing that the defendants were under surveillance prior to being arrested.

Sandiford informed the court that Garcia came from Venezuela to Guyana to purchase the cannabis, which was being supplied by Caravaio.

The facts further detailed that Karahmad provided transportation and the three accused were busted with the cannabis in his vehicle.

Magistrate Ally-Seepaul ruled in the prosecution’s favor and remanded the three defendants to prison until February 18, 2019.

“Collaboration is very important; support and contribution [is needed] to ensure that the education systems work in Guyana,” Dr. Henry said.

Administrator of the Unit of Allied Arts, Lorraine Barker-King shared: “We know that this sponsorship will bode well for both education and the children of Guyana, and we also know that this is a form of contribution towards our next generation.”

Cops maintain presence at some schools as threats continue THE Guyana Police Force is maintaining its presence at a number of government and private schools in and around Georgetown, as the threats from a person or persons unknown continue to make their way to the public space through social media.

On Tuesday, the minister of education summoned the commissioner of police and his team to a meeting, where the issue of security for the schools, among a number of other measures, was discussed. By Wednesday, the police had a presence at the schools but that was met with some hiccups, as the regional education officers for the respective areas to be covered by the police, were not properly informed.

This was due to the urgent nature of the measure, as the threats had continued and the police and the ministry were concerned about the safety of the students. However, on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Leslie James said that the issue had been sorted out and that the security measure was expected to continue uninterrupted.

He stressed that on the first day of the police's presence, the police had to be inside the schools given the nature of the security threats.

66 persons receive house lots on WBD

SEVERAL residents could not stop showering praises on Minister responsible for Housing, Valerie Patterson when they were allocated lots at a distribution exercise held on Thursday at the Region three (Essequibo Islands /West Demer-

ara) Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Office at Vreed-en-Hoop.

Some 66 low-income house lots were allocated for Recht Door Zee on the West Bank of Demerara. Aside from those who were allocated lots, many other persons

who were not assigned lots nonetheless turned up with letters showing they had applied years ago, with the hope of appealing to the minister. Minister Patterson took the time out to look at their letters and speak with them.

Many of those who did receive lots on Thursday expressed how great their need for proper housing was.

The majority of the recipients were single mothers.

“It’s a wonderful feeling, I can’t complain because [of] the torment I’ve been going through [living at] my grandmother with my kids. Getting this house lot means a great lot to me. God is so great and so good and I’m so thankful that I got through,” shared 30-year-old Tracey Hussain, a single mother of three.

Hussain’s children are between the ages of 7 and 11 years old and she was over-

Like Hussain, security guard Roxanne Norville also lives at a squatting area, and can’t wait to put a house on her land and move out of her current conditions.

“I am very happy that I get my house lot. I thank the minister for offering it to

“I’m a single parent, I have two girls and one boy, I come fuh see if I go get one. I renting and I have to move, the people them want they place.

So I hoping to get something [a house lot] so I can make a small something on it where I can live with my kids,” Murli said.

Citizens call for better public health system

SEVERAL citizens stood outside the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), Brickdam, Wednesday midday to peacefully call for the public health system to be improved so that all Guyanese can benefit from better healthcare.

“We are out here to demand [and] stand up for our rights,” human rights activist Sherlina Nageer related. “We are demanding accountability, we are demanding better healthcare; there have been too many issues in this sector for too long.”

Nageer highlighted that as stated in the constitution of Guyana, all citizens have a right to healthcare within the public healthcare system.

However, she contended that the public health institutions are used primarily by “poor people”. “We feel like poor people in Guyana – the ones using the public health systems – our lives don’t seem to matter as much,” the woman said.

She cited that over the years, there have been notable issues plaguing the public institutions including medical errors that have resulted in death, high infant and maternal mortality rates, drug shortages and the general lack of services in institutions across the country.

Further, she noted: “The fact that persons who do not have financial constraints are not using the public health system; that sends a message to us as poor Guyanese.”

These issues have been ongoing for too long, she posited, and added that all citizens of Guyana deserve a better public healthcare system. And in creating this “better” healthcare system, she specifically highlighted that abortion services in all hospitals across Guyana, providing birth control in all hinterland regions and creating and enforcing medical malpractice laws would be few ideal solutions.

Many of the persons protesting were prompted by the recent deaths of three young children who were being treated for Leukemia, a form of cancer, at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), due to the alleged maladministration of drugs.

But Nageer highlighted:

“It’s not a recent issue, it has been there for a while.”

In fact, Christina Scott, 37-year-old mother from Nismes, West Bank Demerara (WBD), had lost her child last October. It was reported that the child died soon after being delivered due to alleged head injuries.

An investigation was purportedly launched into the matter.

The mother joined the group on Wednesday with her placard in hand, not only calling for a better healthcare system, but begging for her own justice. The woman could not hold back her tears as she spoke. The loss of her child still lingers in her mind and the pain she feels is exacerbated because no public official has been forthcoming with information on the matter.

Scott claimed that the child was delivered without the use of gloves and the brute force the doctors used while delivering the child caused the child’s head to become “mashed in”. Since then, she has been trying to meet with officials to find out about the investigation.

“Every time I call them, they telling me today tomorrow, today tomorrow,” the grieving woman said.

In fact, since the incident she said that not a single official has met with her on the matter.

Scott is pregnant again but said that she will be delivering this child at a private institution, since she is mistrustful of the public health system.

To this end, Nageer stressed that there needs to be more accountability within the health sector also.

“Errors will happen, nothing is foolproof. But we feel like there is not enough accountability when people lose their loved ones,” Nageer said. Another human rights activist, Karen DeSouza, shared that she joined with the group on Wednesday as well because she too believes that public health authorities are not being held accountable. “The fact that there are young lives who are supposed to be taken care of can just be destroyed in the way that these kids have been destroyed recently, it is not acceptable and it is not good enough,”

DeSouza said.

Furthermore, she said that she has lost trust in officials saying that they have launched an investigation into accusations of malpractices because, according to her, the reports of these are

not made known.

“There needs to be infinitely better management than what we are seeing at the moment to bring those facilities up to the standard; that we are demanding. It is not good enough,” she said.

“We want them to report back to the problem what they’ve done, we need to see that justice is being served, we need to see more than promises from the minister... we need to see that people’s lives are being taken seri-

ously,” Nageer said.

Nageer noted too that the protest could potentially become a regular exercise, as she hopes that more people will join to call for a better and more accountable system.

MINISTER of Natural Resources, the Hon Raphael Trotman, on January 31 assured Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) youth that the government, “is more about action and finding ways of serving and building them, and ensuring they are marketable and ready to serve.”

He urged the youths to recognise that opportunities are available, adding that these are not favours of the government, but a fulfilment of its duty and commitment to building capacity and ensuring that every citizen has equitable access. He encouraged all stakeholders

to apply themselves, “in the many ways that the course will require.”

This is the first of several collaborative efforts among the ministry,the Mining School, the Linden Technical Institute and other technical institutions to increase the reach of persons accessing the training products of the school.

Drug-demand reduction initiatives continue in CARIFORUM … regional capacity to be built to address adolescents substance use and misuse TWO regional workshops to build the capacity of more than 45 participants working with youth and adolescents from the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) of ACP States with problematic drug use, will be held from 4 -9 February, in Trinidad and Tobago.

The CARICOM Secretariat in a release said that it is collaborating with the Executive Secretariat of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organisation of American States and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, Ministry of National Security National Drug Council in this event. The workshops are facilitated with the support of the European Union/ CARIFORUM Crime and Security Programme, under the 10th EDF. The Crime and Security Programme has three components: drug demand and supply reduction; crime and violence prevention and social development; and capacity building of law enforcement and security agencies and enhanced cooperation with Third States. The drug-demand reduction component of this programme provides the opportunity to build the capacities of service providers, strengthen institutional systems and networks to effectively reduce the demand for illicit drug and alcohol.

These workshops are in response to gaps identified under the Ninth EDF, which indicated that treatment and rehabilitation programmes and services, particularly for adolescents and youth, were needed. As such, the objective of the workshop is to strengthen the capabilities of persons working with adolescents and youth to understand and appropriately respond to those who are using or misusing substances. Regional master trainers will instruct participants from modules developed by CICAD/ OAS in the areas of Adolescent Development; Screening and Assessment; Trauma and Trauma informed Care; Adolescents in Conflict with the Law; Adolescent Drug Treatment and Family Interventions.

The meeting opens with a brief ceremony, to which the media has been invited, at 0:900hrs, at the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Training Academy, in Port-of Spain.

Remarks will be delivered by representatives of the CARICOM Secretariat, the European Union, the Organisation of American States and the Ministry of National Security, Government of Trinidad and Tobago.

ERC, Ministry of Education to collaborate in promoting harmony in schools COMMISSIONERS of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) paid a courtesy call on Minister of Education, Dr Nicolette Henry, on Thursday to discuss ways in which the two agencies can collaborate.

Chairman of the ERC, Dr John Smith, highlighted the importance of the education sector, describing it as the branch that is a key component that interacts with everyone.

He said that the ERC believes that working hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Education can achieve positive change in the society. During the discourse, the ERC presented a number of areas and projects that can be undertaken by both entities. These include printing of a Guyana Text, harmony studies in schools, essay writing competitions and harmony clubs.

Minister Henry welcomed the suggestions and noted that the Education Ministry may have suggestions on how to tweak the ideas so that they meet best practices. She said that the engagement with the ERC has come at an opportune time, when the Ministry of Education is undergoing extensive curriculum reform and is in the process of conducting consultations.

According to the education minister, her ministry can facilitate a meeting with the experts working on the curriculum reform process and the ERC, so that the commission can be apprised as to what is happening and to make contributions. Further, Minister Henry said that the ERC can also be given the opportunity to contribute to the Ministry’s Strategic Plan 2019-2030, which is currently in the planning stage.

Moreover, to address some of the many issues in the society that fall under the radar of the ERC, Minister Henry made the call that the school system should be used to engage parents in a large way, since most of the learned behaviour by children are not influenced by the school system.

It was the consensus of all present that by targeting the youth population, there will be a greater impact to engender positive change in society. It was agreed that moving forward, the ERC will engage officers within the ministry to establish a working committee that will look at how the concerns and interests of the ERC can be addressed through the education sector.

accommodated at the various schools identified and the Guyana Chronicle was able to confirm from a number of schools that indeed the police have been present. In addition, the police were patrolling the vicinity of some of the schools.

The measures became necessary after a number of online threats were levelled against the School of the Nations, a private school in Georgetown, where those making the threats vowed to blow up and shootup at the schools. The school was forced to close its gates and doors as the threat level was assess the threat levels following the shooing of Mr. Brian O’Toole, the Director of School of the Nations.

Those threats have also caused the school to call a number of emergency meetings with parents and teachers, where the safety of the children was discussed.

On Wednesday, Commissioner James was asked about the capability of the police force to provide manpower for the schools identified. He responded that based on his report from the various divisional commanders whose officers are expected to function in those capacities, no reports were forthcoming about the

unavailability of officers to cover the catchment areas.

With respect to the new threats which have surfaced on Friday against two government schools, namely The Bishops High School and Queens College, the police investigators were again called out. The police responded by checking the compounds of the schools, locking down the facilities and employing the use of sniffer dogs.

Those threats, according to ‘A’ Division Commander, Marlon Chapman, were being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters. The students of the schools were reportedly receiving the messages through groups and other social media platforms of which they are part. The meeting last Tuesday which included the Education Minister Nicolette Henry, her team and police officials, focused on not only the issues of the threats, but also counselling for the students and teachers.

The police have since questioned a number of past and present students in relation to the threats which were levelled against the school and also about the shooting of the school’s director, which took place on Sunday night last.

Major upgrade planned for NA Hospital HEALTH officials are mulling the construction of a separate building to house outpatients at the New Amsterdam Hospital, East Berbice/Corentyne (Region Six).

The current building is occupied by the Outpatient (OP) and the Accident and

Dr Kay Shako, Director of Regional and Clinical Services (RHS) Emergency (A&E) Departments, and has become a headache for doctors and other health workers attending to patients.

The integrity of record-keeping in the crowded environment is also of major concern, Dr Samantha Kennedy, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital, said. Patients’ medical and other information are compromised by the use of 10cm x 13cm sheets of paper instead of the universal patient chart and this is “unacceptable” and cannot continue to occur in a regional hospital, which is considered a level-four institution, said Dr Kay Shako, Director of Regional and Clinical Services (RHS).

Kennedy noted that New Amsterdam Hospital officials usually discard patients’ information documented on the slips of paper. The chart is not that easily disposable.

A patient’s chart has utility, because it helps in sharing of relevant information and multidisciplinary team communication. The chart also aids in continuity and coordination of care; is vital evidence in a court of law; and helps in targeting diagnosis and treatment plans without

unnecessary repetition.

At all regional hospitals throughout the country, doctors provide ‘on-call’ duties for the A&E and OP departments. This is problematic among NA doctors.

When CEO Kennedy requested their services, doctors at the NA Hospital resisted, triggering an artificial staff shortage.

“Based on information from the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Shamdeo Persaud, it is common practice that doctors participate in at least three on-call daily sessions every seven days to allow for adequate coverage of the 24-hour service offered at any public hospital”, Shako explained.

According to labour regulations, the extra hours are considered additional work time to the eight hours and attract an on-call allowance as determined by the Public Service Department, Ministry of the Presidency.

“On-calls are mandatory and rosters are created on a periodic basis by the department and approved by the Medical Superintendent (MS). There are special circumstances whereby doctors who cannot be on-call can request a waiver, but this must be recommended by the medical superintendent and approved by the director of regional and clinical services or chief medical officer, both at the MoPH level”, Shako said.

“Anyone who visits the emergency room is categorised as emergent or immediate, urgent and non-urgent; therefore any case that is considered an emergency based on assessment must be seen first.” the RHS Director said.

“For example, if someone comes in with a heart attack, and someone comes in with a cough, obviously the person with the heart attack will take precedence. The next case will be urgent to pay attention to. An urgent case is one in which there is no immediate danger or threat to life, health, property or environment, but if not taken care of in a given period of time, then the situation may worsen”, the director further See page 18

“According to the projects that we do, each toastmaster is given an assessment and this takes three paths with projects. This assists you with a skill,” Cummings said.

As an example, she said if a member is at an event and the emcee did not show up, the member can fill in utilising the skills he/she attained as a toastmaster.

She said members also network with professionals and build relations, while the international umbrella body usually provides content for further individual enhancement.

If an individual considers joining the club, he or she should visit the club when it meets at the National Hardware Limited boardroom on Water Street, and take part in the meeting on Thursdays. The club

operates under the formats of a business and education segment; the latter is undertaken to develop personal skills, mainly in the area of public speaking.

She encouraged persons who may wish to develop their public-speaking skills, self-esteem and presentation skills to join the group.

On Tuesday, Chief Executive Officer, National Hardware, Nicholas Deygoo, urged the new members and executives of the club to lead by example. He said the entire exercise is hinged on what is learnt as well as the skills attained by members. Deygoo urged the club members to utilise these skills in their respective life paths.

A new executive of the Legendary Toastmasters Club will be installed in June this year.

There are 10 additional Toastmasters clubs within three sub-districts in Guyana.

They include clubs which operate within organisations such as the Bank of Guyana, as well as those which function within established business entities such as Unicomer Guyana Limited.

Recent changes at the NA Hospital have seen 11 doctors working at the A&E Department in addition to doctors from surrounding health centres who work “on-call” for four continuous hours in the evenings.

Meanwhile, Shako said the NA Hospital morgue had to be closed for electrical repairs and a private provider was detailed to undertake post-mortem (PM) services.

“The morgue had electrical issues (and) there were frequent shutdowns during the day due to low voltage and power outages. When the freezer opens it gets hot and it takes two hours to regain the correct temperature,” Shako said.

The x-ray services at the NA Hospital were also unavailable because the unit was out of order due to a small leak. That has since been corrected and the unit is now fully functional, Dr Shako assured. (Ministry of Public Health)

Teixeira says she will give up Canadian citizenship IN the aftermath of Thursday’s High Court ruling that the holding of dual citizenship by parliamentarians is unconstitutional, opposition Chief Whip Gail Teixeira reportedly said she is prepared to give up her Canadian citizenship to continue as a Member of Parliament.

This is according to the PPP’s General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo, who made the disclosure Friday at a news conference at Freedom House. Teixeira has been holding dual citizenship for years, serving as a MP since 1992.

Chief Justice Roxane George-Wiltshire in her recent ruling noted that someone who holds dual citizenship cannot be elected to the National Assembly.

“I spoke with Gail Teixeira and she said to me she is prepared to give up her Canadian citizenship; so clearly this ruling PPP/C General-Secre- has implications for the tary Bharrat Jagdeo government and the ministers…and Teixeira has been thinking about doing so for a while,” Jagdeo said.

The PPP general-secretary said the party is yet to officially discuss the impact of that aspect of the chief justice’s ruling, which notes the unconstitutionality of dual citizens as parliamentarians.

However, Jagdeo said it is his personal opinion that the constitution should be revisited to allow for overseas-based Guyanese to serve the nation in parliament.

Opposition Chief Whip “When this country Gail Teixeira starts booming in the future, not in 2020… we want the million-plus people who live abroad, we want them back here, our people, and I believe you can’t say to them come and work and live here and not aspire for political leadership,” Jagdeo said.

Based on the ruling, Jagdeo said that overseas-based dual citizens will not be contesting for parliamentary positions in the aftermath of the next general elections. Further, Jagdeo said that over 2000 persons have expressed interest to be on the party’s regional, geographic and top-up lists for the upcoming elections.

He noted that the party will be discussing nominees for the prime ministerial candidacy and when that decision is made, the party will disclose.

Meanwhile, Jagdeo said the government cannot operate as if it is “business as usual,” since the chief justice has made a ruling. “What the ruling has done now is take away any excuse from the government to further delay the preparation and the holding of elections within the prescribed period, which is 90 days starting from the date of the successful passage of the-confidence motion,” Jagdeo said.

Adding that the President should address the nation and call elections, Jagdeo said “the President needs to speak now and name the date for elections and direct GECOM to start the preparations.”

By Sudipto Ganguly CANBERRA, Australia (Reuters) - Joe Burns and Travis Head smashed big hundreds to end Australia’s century drought and put the hosts on course for a massive first-innings total despite a wobbly start against Sri Lanka’s makeshift attack in the second and final Test yesterday.

Sri Lanka’s injury-depleted pace attack flattered to deceive on the opening day of the first-ever Test at the Manuka Oval as Burns and Head forged a mammoth fourth-wicket stand of 308 to power the hosts to 384-4 at close after being reduced to 28-3.

Burns, who had scored his last Test hundred against New Zealand in early 2016, was unbeaten on a career-best 172 after bringing up the first century by an Australian batsman since Usman Khawaja’s 141 in the drawn Dubai Test against Pakistan last October.

Head completed his maiden Test ton before he was out on 161, following up on his 84 in the victory in Brisbane last week.

Kurtis Patterson was batting on 25, after being dropped at short leg on the first ball he faced from Dhananjaya de Silva.

“Coming into the day’s play, we knew that the first hour was going to be pretty tough,” Burns told reporters, saying he was “bloody happy” to have reached his first Test ton in three years.

“So despite losing the three wickets, we knew that we just had to absorb that pressure that they posed to us.

“But we were also aware that they had an inexperienced bowling attack, who were going to present scoring

opportunities if we could get through those tough periods.”

On a chilly and overcast morning at the Manuka Oval, Australia captain Tim Paine finally had some luck with the coin toss, winning for only the second time in nine Tests he had led the team.

But his joy was shortlived as Sri Lanka made early inroads despite being forced to go with a completely new pace attack with the injured Suranga Lakmal joining Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara on the sidelines after playing the Gabba Test.

Pucovski released from Australia squad due to mental health concerns

By Sudipto Ganguly CANBERRA, Australia (Reuters) - Highly-rated Australia batsman Will Pucovski, who will turn 21 today, has been released from the Test squad playing Sri Lanka due to mental health concerns, the country’s cricket board said yesterday.

Pucovski has played just eight first-class matches but scored 243 for Victoria earlier this season before he opt-

ed to take a break from the game to receive treatment for a mental health-related illness.

“Will Pucovski has been released from the men’s Test squad and will return home to Melbourne to continue managing his wellbeing,” Cricket Australia Doctor Richard Saw said in a statement from the board.

“He reported some challenges over the past few days, and the decision has been made that the best

thing for Will’s welfare is for him to return home to Melbourne.

“Will has been proactive in this process and while he has made significant progress, he feels this is the best course of action to get ready to play cricket for Victoria.”

Pucovski consulted his family and Cricket Victoria before arriving at the decision, the board said.

A GRAND 5-a-side football tournament for players over the age of forty is set for tomorrow at the Kings of Kings playfield in Sophia.

The one-day football festival will involve eight teams to be divided into two groups of four to contest the preliminary round-robin action.

The two top teams from each group will then advance to the semifinals KO stage.

Young Warriors Cricket Club ‘Mash Cup’ is back AFTER an absence of two years, the Young Warriors Cricket Club of Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice has recently launched its major fundraiser - Mash Cup 2019.

This year's event, even though a fundraiser, will be used by the club to reconnect with its friends, supporters, sponsors and, generally, the community.

Over the years, proceeds from this event went towards improvements to the club's facilities and covering the cost of the day-to-day functions. Many schools, places of worship and other charitable organisations also benefitted.

The tournament will be played on Saturday February 23, a national holiday and will involve second division teams from the area.

No first division cricketer will be allowed. Cash incentives and trophies will be up for grab along with lots of gate prizes.

Guyana to clash with French Guiana today in Goodwill rugby tournament THE National Sports Commission (NSC), and by extension the Director of Sport Christopher Jones, on Thursday handed over a number of trophies and plaques to Troy Yhip (Events Coordinator) of the Guyana Rugby Football Union.

This is in support of the Goodwill Rugby competition which will see Guyana and French Guiana compete for top honours today. Categories include U-17, U-19,

Male, Female and Seniors Championships.

The event is being held at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary with action kicking off at 14:00hrs.

In a statement to the media, NSC conveyed best of luck to Guyana’s ruggers and urged the public to “come out and support our athletes as they represent Guyana to the best of their ability”.

Curran brothers, Ben Foakes agree new Surrey deals

ENGLAND internationals Sam Curran, Tom Curran and Ben Foakes have all extended their contracts with Surrey.

All-rounder Sam Curran, 20, has signed until the end of the 2020 season, having made his Test debut last summer.

His brother Tom, 23, and Test wicketkeeper Foakes, 25, will be with the county

champions until 2021.

“It’s a credit to the club that our players want to sign extensions and help build on last year’s success,” said director of cricket Alec Stewart.

FORMER Guyana and West Indies all-rounder Roger Harper was re-elected president of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Tuesday at the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) pavilion.

There are two new faces on the executive, Marcus Watkins and former Labour Minister Manzoor Nadir.

Neil Barry and Azad Ibrahim, both were returned as first vice-president and second vice-president respectively.

Mohammed rescues Red Force with unbeaten 79 PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) – Jason Mohammed rescued his season with an unbeaten half-century as Trinidad and Tobago Red Force batted all day, to put leaders Guyana Jaguars under pressure in their sixth round Regional Four-Day contest here Friday.

The 32-year-old Mohammed has endured a wretched run in the current campaign, mustering just 91 runs from eight innings. His previous highest score was 19 against Barbados Pride in the last

round two weeks ago.

However, he put that dismal form behind him to top score with an unbeaten 79 as Red Force reached 264 for five in their second innings at the close at Queen’s Park Oval.

He struck eight fours in an innings spanning 189 deliveries and just shy of four hours.

Mohammed put on 51 for the fifth wicket with Yannic Cariah (15) and has so far added 83 for the sixth with Imran Khan who was unbeaten on 40 off 94 balls.

(By Stephan Sookram in Barbados compliments of E-Networks, Secure Innovations and Concepts, KFC, GFX racing, AMS) THE Guyana team arrived safely yesterday afternoon ahead of rounds 3 and 4 of the Junior Caribbean Karting Academy Trophy (JCKAT).

The teams for rounds 3 and 4 include Rayden Persaud, Zachary Persaud, Jeremy Ten-Pow, Nathan Rahaman and Paige Mendonca. Elan Rahaman opted out.

The team is also joined by Justin Ten-Pow and Nicholas Sawh who will be competing in the local Barbados Karting Association (BKA) class.

Because of the late arrival of the team due to difficulties with LIAT, their engines were drawn randomly.

So when the Guyanese arrived at the Bushy Park Raceway after sunset, they got right to work setting up their karts.

After rounds 1 and 2, Barbadian racers Calem Maloney and Adam Mallalieu are the early front-runners in the CJKAT, having won seven of the first weekend’s eight races.

Jamaican 13-year-old Tommi Gore won the other race, while his compatriots Ryan Chisholm, also 13, and Zander Williams, 12, were podium finishers. Maloney has 158 points, leading Mallalieu by 14, with Chisholm (103), Gore (92) and Williams (80) completing the top five.

THE Guyana Football Federation (GFF), in collaboration with the Pele Alumni Inc., will kick off the GFF/Pele Alumni ‘Frank Watson’ National U-15 Inter-Association Club Tournament at the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) National Training Centre, Providence today from 10:30hrs.

The four-day tournament will feature 10 teams in three clusters with the final set for February 16.

The teams will be greeted by GFF officials

including technical director Ian Greenwood and president Wayne Forde at 10:00hrs after which, the official kick-off will be done by Forde.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) – Captain Jonathan Carter struck his fourth half-century of the Regional Four-Day Championship but Barbados Pride lost late wickets to allow Windward Islands Volcanoes to strengthen their advantage, on the second day of the sixth round affair here Friday.

The left-handed Carter ended the day on 64, an innings which lay at the centre of Pride’s first innings reply of 154 for four at the close at Kensington Oval.

Aaron Jones chipped in with 42 but was one of two wickets to fall in the third over before the close in a superb burst from fast bowler Ray Jordan (230).

With the score on 152, the right-armer breached Jones’s defence to bowl him and two balls later, found Nicholas Kirton’s (0) outside edge for Devon Smith to take the catch at first slip.

Pacer Josh Thomas (2-34) had earlier removed both openers as Pride

stumbled to 44 for two in reply to Volcanoes’ massive 470 for eight declared, before Carter and Jones repaired the damage in a 108-run, third wicket stand.

Carter faced 100 balls in just short of 2-¼ hours and struck six fours and a six while Jones counted five fours in a 67-ball knock.

Not for the first time in the match, veteran Smith made the headlines when he perished just short of a deserved double hundred for 199.

Resuming the day on 146, the lefthander reached 195 at lunch with Volcanoes on 416 for five, after continuing from their overnight 325 for five.

But he fell to the fifth ball after the resumption, punching Test pacer Miguel Cummins to Kirton at extra cover.

All told, he faced 351 deliveries in eight hours and 25 minutes, striking 23 fours and a six.

No batsman really dominated on a pitch which made fluent stroke-play difficult, and veteran seamer Stuart Broad exploited the conditions brilliantly to finish with three for 42 while off-spinner Moeen Ali picked up two for 54.

Resuming from their overnight 30 without loss, Brathwaite and Campbell survived a testing first hour, mainly against Broad, as they extended their opening stand to 70 – their third consecutive half-century stand.

Brathwaite faced 156 deliveries and struck three fours while the left-handed Campbell lived a charmed life in his 118-ball stay at the crease which included five fours.
