–– Bishops’ High School teacher placed on $100,000 bail

BISHOPS’ High School Business and Economics teacher, Coen Jackson, who has been accused of sexual predation of school-aged girls, was on Saturday arrested at the Brickdam Police Station, Georgetown and released on $100,000 bail.

Jackson has since denied the allegations levelled against him but admitted to having two relationships with former students of the senior secondary school.

The matter was brought to the fore by Cultural Policy Advisor, Ruel Johnson, who penned a letter to the Ministry of Education about Jackson’s alleged behaviour which resulted in an investigation.

Several persons have reportedly made statements which indicate that they are victims of Jackson’s sexual grooming.

Crime Chief, Paul Williams on Sunday confirmed that Jackson reported to the Brickdam Police Station on Saturday with his attorney after which arrangements were made

for his release on bail.

“He brought in a statement and they conducted interviews with him… he, as far as I know, is to return tomorrow (today) for the continuation of investigations,” the crime chief explained.

Similarly, two of the teacher’s lawyers, Jerome Khan and Siand Dhurjon have indicated that their client was questioned by investigators on Saturday but has been released and has lodged his passport with the law enforcement officials.

Khan told the Guyana Chronicle briefly that while he knows his client was questioned by police, he did not have specifics as he is currently out of town.

However, Dhurjon told the Guyana Chronicle that the police called Jackson into the police station. He said upon arrival, Jackson was “formally arrested” and after questioning, he was placed on $100,000 bail.

He noted that the police have indicated that contact

would be made with Jackson in the future when necessary. Asked about the specific allegations put to his client, Dhurjon said the allegations against his client were in relation to one victim. His client maintained his innocence during questioning.

Last week, the Bishops’ High School Old Students’ Association (BHSOSA) announced that an anonymous reporting system is being developed by the association in light of the recent sexual allegations levelled against Jackson.

SENSITISATION SESSIONS The body said too that sensitisation sessions will also be done to equip students with the necessary information on abuse and the process of reporting any act of abuse or victimisation.

The matter was investigated at the level of the Ministry of Education and the Childcare and Protection Agency (C&PA) and has since been handed

over to the police.

The Ministry of Education found that headteacher of the school Winifred Ellis’ chiding of the female students on the matter was out of place and recommended that she be reprimanded.

The Ministry said Ellis must apologise to the students and teachers of the school.

In an audio recording, Ellis was heard telling the students that they were “slackers” and “loose” while requesting those who felt uncomfortable around Jackson in the past, to publicly step out of the assembly line or make a show of hands.

The alumni at its recent extraordinary general meeting held Tuesday last outlined what it believes to be the way forward for the teachers and students of the senior secondary school.

At the November 28, 2017 meeting, which comprised alumni and 6th Form students, the BHSOSA indicated that mechanisms are being

put in place immediately to train teachers to detect and report allegations and incidents of sexual abuse and harassment.

In a statement, the association noted that in collaboration with the C&PA, teaching staff will receive training in protocols for sexual abuse and abuse in general which is aimed at enhancing the capability of teachers to detect and report allegations and incidents of abuse and harassment.

Additionally, a recommendation will be made to employ child protection and related policies within the school, a statement from the association stated on Thursday.

The association assured that mentoring and counselling for psychological trauma will be implemented with immediate effect and will be available to both students and teachers.

Coen Jackson rassment, abuse, gender equality and ethics. Sessions will commence next week (this weeks),” the statement added.

The BHOSOSA condemned any acts of sexual misconduct and abuse against students in the school and called on the Ministry of Education to immediately commission an inquiry into the issue of sexual misconduct, abuse and subsequent reporting in the school.

Moreover, the association called for policies and protocols to be put in place to ensure that such behaviour is eliminated and students are encouraged to report such matters without fear of ridicule or repercussions.

Prime minister calls for constructive budget debate

THE budget 2018 debate begins today and Prime Minister and Leader of the House, Moses Nagamootoo, has called for there to be bi-partisan cooperation in the shaping of the nation’s development and social agenda.

In his weekly column, “My turn”, published in the Sunday edition of the Guyana Chronicle, under the heading, “Different strategy in changing times”, the prime minister said the $267B budget presented by Finance Minister Winston

While noting what he described as “popular acceptance” for the budget, he noted too the criticisms of the parliamentary opposition, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

“The latter would belly-ache over what the budget does not include. However, it serves no useful

purpose for an opposition to just make a morbid assessment of the budget and try to sell pie-in-the-sky prescriptions. A different strategy is needed for the changing times,” he stated.

And according to the prime minister, there is a great need for positive politics.

“We need positive politics where the opposition would participate in, and not boycott, pre-budget consultations,” while noting that with the advent of an oiland-gas economy, the cur-

rent -day situation demands all-inclusive, national governance and not “narrow, ethnic-driven agendas.”

Notwithstanding his desire, he does not believe that the opposition would participate; at least, not anytime soon.

“It needs a visionary leader who would look towards the future and not be pre-occupied with building ethnic fences to pre-empt or prevent possible prosecution for past wrongs. The better interests of the constituents of the opposition require en-

gagement, not withdrawal.”

The prime minister said with the start of the budget debates today, citizens would expect civilised and constructive exchanges not only criticisms, castigation and condemnation, “but practical suggestions and proposals on how our united country could move forward, faster.”

Though the motive of the murder/suicide has not been confirmed, information reaching Guyana Chronicle seems to suggest that one of the partners was involved in an extramarital affair.

Dispute over New York parking spot turns deadly NEW YORK (Reuters) - A driver plowed a car into half a dozen people during a fight over a parking spot outside a hookah bar in the New York City borough of Queens in the early hours of Sunday morning, killing one and injuring the others before fleeing, police said.

During the dispute, the driver got out of a white Hyundai Sonata and stabbed two people in the torso, the New York Police Department said in a statement.

The pair were recovering and in stable condition.

The driver then got back in the car and drove onto the sidewalk about half a block away, striking six victims.

One of the wounded remained in critical condition, the police said.

Police said they later arrested the person they believe to be the driver, who fled the scene, and recovered the car in another part of Queens. The driver has not been publicly identified.

Trump tweets about Russia probe spark warnings from lawmakers WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A series of tweets by U.S. President Donald Trump about the investigation into contacts between his 2016 campaign and Russia prompted concerns on Sunday among both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham saying Trump could be wading into “peril” by commenting on the probe.

“I would just say this with the president: There’s an ongoing criminal investigation,” Graham said on the CBS programme “Face the Nation.”

“You tweet and comment regarding ongoing criminal investigations at your own peril,” he added.

On Sunday morning, Trump wrote on Twitter that he never asked the former FBI Director, James Comey to stop investigating Michael Flynn, the president’s former national security adviser - a statement at odds with an account Comey himself has given. That tweet followed one on Saturday in which Trump said he had fired Flynn because the former national security adviser had lied to the FBI.Trump’s attorney, John Dowd, said in an interview with Reuters that he had drafted the tweet and said putting it together had been a “mistake.” “I’ll take responsibility,” Dowd said.

The series of tweets came after a dramatic turn of events on Friday in which Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors delving into con-

tacts between Trump’s inner circle and Russia before he took office.Legal experts and some Democratic lawmakers said if Trump knew Flynn lied to the FBI and then pressured Comey not to investigate him, that could bolster a charge of obstruction of justice.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she believed the indictments in the investigation so far and Trump’s “continual tweets” point toward an obstruction of justice case.

The Russia matter has dogged Trump’s first year in office, and this weekend overshadowed his first big legislative win when the Senate approved a tax cuts bill. Flynn was the first member of Trump’s administration to plead guilty to a crime uncovered by special counsel Robert Mueller’s wide-ranging investigation into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 U.S. election and potential collusion by Trump aides.Russia has denied meddling in the election and Trump has said there was no collusion.

Comey, who had been investigating the Russia allegations, was fired by Trump in May. He told the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee in June that he believed his dismissal was related to the Russia probe, and said Trump asked him to end the investigation of Flynn.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The founder and CEO of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill killed himself inside his Bronx factory on Saturday, police sources said.

Lowell Hawthorne, 57, shot himself inside the Park Ave. building near E. 173rd St. in Claremont about 5:30 p.m., sources said.

More than a dozen current and former employees stood in disbelief outside the factory hours later.

Some had tears rolling down their cheeks.

“He was a good boss, humble and a good businessman,” said Pete Tee, 27, a former employee.

“He never seemed sad.

This is just terrible news right now.”

Former gov’t minister collapses in court, rushed to hospital SUNDAY EXPRESS (Trinidad) - Former government minister Sadiq Baksh was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing as he was about to testify in the Piarco II preliminary enquiry at the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court.

At around 10 a.m. as Baksh was about to continue giving evidence before Senior Magistrate Ejenny Espinet in the 13-year-old enquiry, he began complaining of feeling unwell.

Baksh, 67, and a number of other men including Steve Ferguson and Ishwar Galbaransingh are charged accused of fraud and corruption stemming from the construction of the multi-million dollar Piarco airport. So far the State has called all of its witnesses and the magistrate has found that the accused men have a case to answer.

The defence opened its case in late October with Baksh being the first defence witness to testify. In all there are approximately 17 defence witnesses to testify before the enquiry comes to an end.

Venezuela to launch cryptocurrency to fight ‘blockade’: Maduro CARACAS (Reuters) - President Nicolas Maduro said on Sunday that Venezuela will launch a cryptocurrency to combat what the leftist leader says is a financial “blockade” against the crisis-hit nation spurred by U.S. sanctions.

Maduro said the OPEC member’s new currency, “petro,” will be backed by natural resources reserves although he did not provide details on the logistics of its roll-out.

The announcement highlights how the Trump administration’s sanctions are hurting Venezuela’s ability to move money

through international banks. Sources say compliance departments are scrutinising transactions linked to Venezuela, which has slowed bond payments and complicated the oil exports.

It was met with widespread scorn from Maduro foes who doubt that economically crippled Venezuela could pull off the launch of a cryptocurrency.

Venezuela’s own currency, the bolivar, has been on a freefall. It has lost around 57 percent in the last month alone.

Ending violence against women

THIS year, the United Nations UNiTE Campaign under the overarching theme, “Leave No One Behind: End Violence against Women and Girls.”

From November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world.

One type of violence, more specifically sexual violence against women in the workplace has been headlining the news lately.

The workplace should be a place where we go daily to fulfil our obligations to our employers. Implicit in this arrangement is an understanding via contract, written and unwritten, as to the other conditions of our service. Chief among these, are that we be punctual and be of personal conduct acceptable to good human relations. But there is also a corresponding obligation -that employees, both male and female, be made to feel safe from any personal harm or injury. That has always been the traditional meaning of a safe working environment.

Guyana is guided by some strong, progressive and gender-inclusive laws, including the Domestic Violence Act 1996 Chapter 98:01 and the Sexual Offences Act Chapter 8:03. This Act reveals that there are no specific laws which protect against sexual harassment in workplaces, which renders the need for this to be examined.

Section 8 of the Prevention of Discrimination Act Chapter 99:09 states that: “Any act of sexual harassment against an employee committed by an employer, managerial employee or co-worker, shall constitute unlawful discrimination based on sex within the meaning of section 4 of this Act and the

Sexual Offences Act 2010. Section 4 further states that, “A person discriminates against another person if the first mentioned person makes, on any of the grounds mentioned in subsection (2), any distinction, exclusion or preference the intent or effect of which is to nullify or impair equality of opportunity or treatment in any employment or occupation.” These grounds include, inter alia, “race, sex, religion, ethnic origin and colour…”

Sexual harassment is covered under the Prevention of Discrimination Act of 1997.

The section is very cursory and simply states that, “‘Sexual harassment’ is defined as unwanted conduct of a sexual nature in the workplace or in connection with the performance of work, which is threatened or imposed as a condition of employment on the employee, or which creates a hostile working environment for the employee.”

The law thus confines the offence to the workplace when in fact it can, and does, occur in any location. Schools, for instance, is a source for sexual harassment of female students by teachers, the most recent case in point is the Bishops High School case which was widely reported in the media.

But even with the limited ambit of our law, the problem is much more widespread than the reports indicate. In 2005 a U.S. State Department report on Guyana revealed that a study conducted by the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute(GWLI) in a collaborative effort between the Government and the UNDP, asserted that sexual harassment was a significant problem.

GWLI reported that, “while the problem is widespread, victims were reluctant to make official reports due to fear of the associated stigma and a lack of confidence in the legal system to deliver justice promptly.”

In Guyana, with its more than fair share of single mothers, maintaining a job is literally a matter maintaining one’s livelihood and most females are very reluctant to report cases of sexual harassment. But if the anecdotal evidence is to be believed, then closer attention has to be paid to all places of work, be it private or public sector organisations. These violations are not confined to the poor and include all strata and ethnic groups.

Many Guyanese men believe that sexual overtures are harmless, but the reality is that it can beset both physical and emotional anguish to women and girls. The more serious the nature of the harassment, the more harm will be inflicted on the victims.

Within recent times, the issue of the workplace and how safe it has been for female employees has come full circle, with shocking revelations dominating our international news headlines.

For the greater part of the year, there have been numerous revelations of inappropriate behaviour in all forms, ranging from rape and sexual harassment, in the form of allegations from some famous personalities, levelled against equally famous and powerful males.

These reports have emanated from famous places such as Hollywood; the United States House of Representatives; the British House of Commons, involving a few Members of Parliament, and even allegations against a former deceased prime minister; and the popular internationally known news outlets ranging from the BBC in England; ABC, NBC, CBS, AND FOX news in the United States.

The reality is that females in the workplace have been targets for the criminal acts of sexual abuse and violence in all forms,

perpetrated by the those who are influential (in management and supervisory positions) the rich and powerful. These have not been recent, but instead have been the source of whispers in the corridors of power and influence wherever they are, with women being seen as fair game for the lascivious gluttony of those in positions of power.

The latest to fall by way of the ME Too route is the famed anchor Matt Lauer of the widely watched NBC TODAY show. This latest disgrace has shaken the American television news system to the core.

This brings sharply to the fore that we in Guyana can no longer sweep under the rug, instances of sexual harassment and sexual violence in the workplace or in any other environment for that matter.

Sexual harassment of women and girls is a serious problem and many women/ girls in Guyana experience it daily. It is clear that many do not understand their rights, much less how to deal with this problem. Considering Guyana’s unique ethnic, social and cultural conventions, legislation to define and penalise sexual harassment should be fully explored. It should incorporate appropriate mechanisms for public education on the Sexual Offences Act 2010 and Section 8 of the Prevention of Discrimination Act Chapter 99:09 about what constitutes sexual harassment, as well as grievance-resolution measures.

Sadly, the workplace as a domain of meaningful endeavours has become an extension of the societal jungle where women have continued to be violated and forced to accept sexual harassment as part and parcel of their employment obligations. We say no more to this form of violence against women!!

THERE is a moral responsibility to speak out about the painting of State properties in any party’s colours. This practice would have been unacceptable under the PNC, PPP/C and

it is under the APNU+AFC. The painting of State properties in the shades of the green and yellow of the coalition cannot be countenanced.

Society is cognisant of the clamour for the separation of party and State/gov-

ernment’s business and this is not without merit.

The State/government has to function as a non-partisan unit and all-inclusive as prerequisites for welding the diverse forces together and ensuring rights and opportunities for all.

This is a fundamental responsibility of government and in the execution of governance.

The party or group elected to government must govern in the interest of all and recognise that State properties are not theirs but belong

to all the people.

When in office they are custodians of the people’s properties and for the period of occupancy they must ensure proper upkeep.

You cannot desecrate State properties by painting them

in partisan colours. These properties are acquired for the benefit of all the people and are maintained with the tax dollars of all the people, which cuts across party lines.

Queen’s young leader brings Google Garage to Guyana

GUYANA 2017 Queen’s Young Leader, Samantha Sheoprashad, through her company Trifinity Solutions, is partnering with the multinational technology company GOOGLE to promote Digital Garage here.

Digital Garage is a non-profit nationwide programme from Google that delivers free digital skills training via an online learning platform.

“The partnership will focus on boosting your digital knowledge in, online business promotions. Our goal is to create a community of creators through collaboration, to spark innovation while expanding sustainable digital wealth in Guyana,” Sheoprashad told the Guyana Chronicle.

Sheoprashad, who is also the co-founder of Trifinity Solutions, said in this technologic age of digital media, businesses in Guyana do not capitalise to their fullest potential, regarding the advantages of having an online presence.

“It is evident that there is a lack of technological exchanges within the business sectors of Guyana and it is for this reason; we see a plethora of failing businesses. However, our vision is to grow and to sustain online companies through the digital media wealth creation in Guyana,” she said.

According to Sheopra-

shad, the Digital Garage will provide Guyanese businesses with the opportunity to improve and to increase their companies’ daily operations regarding online services.

“Individuals will learn to use different social media platform to leverage online sales and building their target audience. At the end of the programme, each participant will receive a certificate directly from Google,” the young leader explained.

“Moreover, through Trifinity Solutions, the company will initiate more startup creations, adding value to startup companies products and ensuring the relevant skill development training are provided. seen on buildings and fences, but also furniture as in the case of a school in Victoria, East Coast Demerara, where the benches have been painted in green and yellow.

Government and their supporters must engage in acts to earn the respect and confidence of the people and this painting programme is divisive and counter-productive.

As the coalition paints the Ministry of the Presidency, State House, etc in its colours, it needs to take note that the PPP/C has political control of some Regional Democratic Councils, Town Councils and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils.

Should the PPP/C decide to paint the public properties in the areas with its party colours, the coalition and supporters will condemn the action. This would be the right thing to do, but its application must be across the board, not partisan.

As the coalition moves to renegotiate the Cummingsburg Accord, the partners must visit this issue and State their positions in black and white.

The presence or absence of law does

not make something morally and ethically acceptable. Slavery was considered legal.

It was and remains morally reprehensible and wrong.

A green economy is an economic policy that seeks to pursue development (cultural, political, social, civic and economic), consistent with protection of fundamental rights and freedoms and the environment via sustainable approaches.

Guyana Chronicle dominates PAHO awards again!

THE Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL) has again dominated the 2017 PAHO/ WHO Clare Forrester Media Awards for Health Journalism, winning a total of 19 awards, including the award for the entity with the most submissions.

Under the theme: “Positively transforming health through the media in Guyana,” the awards honour journalists who have contributed throughout the year in raising awareness on local health matters.

According to PAHO/ WHO Representative to Guyana, Dr. William AduKrow, these awards have seen health journalism grow from strength to strength, with a whopping 97 entries having been submitted this year.

Despite several journalists receiving accolades, Dr. AduKrow said, “The overall winner is the entire community.”

He detailed the role of journalists in effecting change and reporting on facts.

He referenced the historic passing of the Tobacco Control Bill earlier this year, the reintroduction of the HPV vaccine and the initiation of the Mass Drug Administration Campaign for Filaria as key areas where the media have been instrumental.

Senior Reporter Svetlana Marshall scored first in the Best Print News Story and Online News Story categories. She was also placed second in the latter category.

Chief Judge, Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin, who gave the Chief Judge’s report, highlighted that the state-owned media dominated the competition and called for other media entities to give the Chronicle a run for its money.

She also highlighted that the criteria for the competition would be made more stringent in coming years in an effort to force journalists to keep raising the standard of their work.

Dr. Martin noted that online journalism, in particular, was one area that needed more refining.

The new category of photojournalism came after PAHO hosted the first-ever photojournalism workshop in Guyana earlier this year.

This category of the competition was something she and the other four judges had lobbied for.

Several squatting areas to be regularised –– Perry Street, Tucville, Georgetown

NEXT year a number of areas will be regularised by the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) including Perry Street, Tucville, Georgetown, but the housing authority has made it clear that zero-tolerance areas will not be regularised.

CH&PA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lelon Saul, in a recent interview, toldthe Guyana Chronicle that part of the authority’s focus in 2018 will not be on regularising but relocating residents from zero-tolerance areas.

He noted that Perry Street, Tucville, is among areas listed in Georgetown that would be regularised by the CH&PA. “That area can be regularised and it will be regularised,” Saul assured.

Parts of Guyhoc Park will also be regularised, he added. However, persons

“We will develop a plan that would see some folks being relocated to Cummings Lodge; it will be a comprehensive plan. It is not just uprooting people and moving them but it is working with these communities, getting people to understand the need for them to move,” the CH&PA CEO said.

When the Guyana

Chronicle visited Perry Street, Tucville, on Sunday, residents expressed satisfaction with the authority’s announcement, noting that for years, they have been seeking legal documents to the plots of land they occupy.

“That is a very good initiative, I love that, it would make it easier for me and my family. We would [sic] have to study that we have to move,” Graham told the Guyana Chronicle upon learning of CH&PA’s intention to regularise the area.

He said having a legal document such as a title would allow him to qualify for a loan to extend his home.

Tandika Hinkson, who also grew up in Perry Street with her mother and siblings, said persons would be very thrilled if the CH&PA makes good on its promises.

Hinkson told this newspaper that since the birth of her brother 23 years ago her mother has been trying to acquire legal ownership of the land they occupy.

“From ever since then to now my mother has been going into housing and finding out, they keep telling us that we are not part of the

Because Perry Street is not regularised, Hinkson said her family was unable to build extensively.

“We would be very relieved because honestly speaking, I wish if we had papers I could have built already, my mother would have built up, and I would have been able to build down but because we don’t have the documents, they said anything above this height they will take it down,” she posited.

Meanwhile, there are over 500 persons squatting in the Sophia-Cummings Lodge area. CH&PA has given close to 300 of them eviction notices with a deadline of January 31, 2018. Those squatters are required to relocate once they have viable alternatives.

For those persons who would have difficulties, Saul, in an earlier interview, said that the housing authority will assist.

“We will work with the residents to find a viable alternative. Come January 31, 2018, if there are people still on the reserve and there is no other viable alternative, we will continue to work with these people to ensure that we find suitable accommodation for them,” he had explained.

CH&PA is encouraging all squatters to submit their applications for house lots.

Due to the low affordability of some citizens, the CH&PA will be exploring a number of avenues to provide low-cost homes for the poor and working class.

Not ready for sex

PARENTS who pay close attention to the development of their children will realise that at the tender

ages of 15 -17, teenagers are not ready for sex.

During the transitional period from childhood to

adulthood, what teens really need is support from adults who can give them a sense of direction and help

them to focus on becoming productive citizens. Without this support and with the onset of changing hor-

mones, many young people find themselves embroiled in sexual relationships for which they are ill-equipped -- mentally, emotionally or socially.

Young people go through different stages of development and during adolescence, their view of the world can be somewhat irrational. They are still learning a range of things on several levels including how to cope with their emotions and other experiences they are having on a day-to-day basis. Indulging in sexual activity can only complicate their lives and affect their thoughts and potential outlook at this ‘sensitive’ stage of their development. Such activity is best left for a later point in time, when they are able to make the choice to have sex based on appropriate factors other than simply the age of consent.

In Guyana the legal age for sexual consent is 16 but this does not mean that young people are ready to commence sexual relationships at this age. It simply means that at 16 a child is legally allowed to make that choice. Unfortunately, many young people fall into the trap of being groomed, encouraged or beguiled by adults into having sex based on the age of consent. This is unfair, because children are not aware of the many consequences that go along with embarking on sexual activity at a young age.

Some of the consequences are emotional and others can be physical and affect their health and sense of well-being for a life time.

That is why the grooming of children for sexual activity is an offence in the Sexual Offences Act 2010.

A healthy way for adults to look at ‘teenagers and sexual activity’ is to accept that they will be curious.

Their bodies are changing and they are indeed becoming sexual beings both mentally and physically.

Sex is a natural part of our existence and in a perfect world, it would only take place between two consent-

ing adults who have vowed to spend the rest of their lives together.

But this is not a perfect world and children are learning about sex very early on in their childhoods. Many parents will be amazed to learn what their children actually know about sex and the things they have witnessed and/or observed should they care to share their information.

Therefore, parents need to be open and to guide young adults through their adolescent years with positive and sensible information: for example, sexual activity should be delayed for as long as possible.

This does not mean that parents should confine all teenagers to their rooms or tell them to ‘study their book’ and not allow them to mix with the opposite sex.

It means that parents need to speak openly about sexual activity with their teens and together they should understand the reasons why sexual activity, though natural, is not essential in the growth or development of young people.

Once children understand that there is much more to life that they can attain while young, they will aim for more beneficial goals. But the guidance and input from parents play a vital role in the choices that young people will make: this is why parents need to play close attention to the development of their children.

Adults who have good relationships with their adolescent children can guide them with meaningful conversations, so they stay focused on achieving goals while young and fresh instead of entering the world of sexual activity and in some cases, parenthood.

SEVERAL pieces of work under the title “The Wine Dark Sea” from London-based sculptor and artist with Guyanese roots Hew Locke have been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

First shown at Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art and acquired through them, ‘The wine dark sea’ is a description of the Mediterranean used by Homer through-

out ‘The Odyessy.’

by Derek Walcott in his epic poem ‘Omeros,’ set mainly in the Caribbean and referencing characters from ‘The Iliad.’

Each vessel is based on a prototype, from an ordinary sailing ship and a typical military skiff to Sir Francis Drake’s Revenge, a Cuban refugee boat, a Coast Guard vessel, a craft inspired by the 1979 film Apocalypse

Now, and an Amazonian cargo transport.

The ship is a charged symbol, signifying as it does maritime culture, migration, displacement, exchange, slavery, colonialism, military conflict, trade, and social, economic, and artistic exchange, all of which Locke explores here.

Individually and as a group, the works are rife with references to history as well as art history.

Nagamootoo is of the strong opinion that sugar will not fail if the industry is streamlined to get the

best from both fields and factories, and peasant cane farmers and sugar workers are brought into the production chain.

“I am of the view still that former cane-cutters should be given redundant land to cultivate cash crops or manage fish farms. Today, I am lighting a candle of hope for sugar workers who would opt for self-employment,” he said, calling for collaboration and cooperation.

That aside, the prime minister reckons that without being able to use sugar workers as their whipping boys, the opposition’s views on the 2018 budget would be “flat and dry.” “…except for the eventual retreat, withdraw and walkout!” he declared.

Bartica Market transformation on schedule

The Bartica Municipal Market being repainted

The Bartica Municipal Market is being expanded THE much anticipated transformation of the Bartica Municipal Market is progressing smoothly, Mayor Gifford Marshall has said.

The first phase of the $23M transformational project is expected to be completed by December 31, and according to the mayor, it is on schedule.

The multimillion-dollar project is being funded through a grant from the Ministry of Communities.

Mayor Marshall told the Guyana Chronicle that the project is divided into three components: rehabilitation of the market; implementation of an integrated solid waste management programme; and promotion of local goods and services.

“The Bartica Market building which is just around 10 years old was in need of a facelift. Therefore, the entire market will be repainted, gutters replaced, front metal doors replaced with modern shutters, paving of the northern side of the market and the construction of a fountain to the front,” Marshall said as he explained the first component of the project.

He noted that implementation of an integrated

solid waste management programme forms part of the second aspect of the initiative.

The mayor said the Bartica Town Council will be engaging and sensitising vendors as to how they can reduce and recycle their waste.

“Composting will be an integral part of this process. The bins will relocate from its location and be strategically placed to facilitate the waste-management programme,” the mayor explained.

In the area of promotion, he said the municipality will be pushing for residents to buy and eat local.

“In an effort to get more residents to support the Bartica Market and also to push our locally grown produce, a massive promotional sign will be mounted to the front of the market.

It is anticipated that this initiative will significantly improve sales, since advertisement is key to improved sales,” Marshall explained.

On completion, the aesthetics of the market and sales are expected to improve.

The first phase of the project is set to be completed by December 31 at a cost of $15M. The second phase, valued at $8M, is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2018.

Gayle, Mithun lead Rangpur into BPL playoffs

WINDIES star Chris Gayle blasted a quickfire 38 from 27 to lead Rangpur Riders into the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) playoffs following a 19-run win over Carlos Brathwaite’s third-placed Khulna Titans at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday.

Batting in his usual spot in a re-tooled lineup the big West Indian slammed four boundaries and two big sixes. Late Silva goal extends City’s winning run to 13 games

(REUTERS) – David Silva scored a late goal as runaway leaders Manchester City won their 13th successive Premier League game and restored their eight-point lead with a 2-1 victory against West Ham United on Sunday.

Silva converted Kevin de Bruyne’s brilliant pass from close range in the 83rd minute as City maintained their blistering form this season.

Nicolas Otamendi had converted substitute Gabriel Jesus’s cross in the 57th minute to equalise after defender Angelo Ogbonna had headed West Ham into the most unlikely lead at the end of a first half in which the hosts dominated.

In winning their 13th successive Premier League match, City equalled the record held by both Arsenal and Chelsea.

“It was difficult, teams seem to come here and get every man behind the ball, not interested in anything but parking the bus,” City midfielder Fabian Delph told Sky Sports. ”But we have players like David Silva in the team, so we knew if we kept going we’d get our chances. We knew we had to be patient, we came out flying in the second half, we tried to explain to the boys we still had time and then we started to relax a bit more and found those spaces.

“We want to win the derby but we are taking it each game at a time.”

Sunil Ambris, 24, lasted just one delivery on his Test debut, out hit-wicket for a golden duck against New Zealand.

West Indies batsman ‘ Sunil Ambris entered the history books for all the wrong reasons on Friday after he became the first batsman to be out hit-wicket for a golden duck on Test debut.

Ambris arrived at the crease for his maiden Test innings against New Zea-

land in Wellington but the 24-year-old stood on his stumps after playing back to a short ball from Neil Wagner.

It was supposed to be a day to remember for Ambris, instead, it ended in despair after just one delivery as the Windies crumbled dramat-

ically amid Wagner’s destructive bowling on day one of the opening Test.

Ambris also became the first player since Australia’s Steve Waugh in 2003 to be dismissed for a duck via hit-wicket and just the 10th overall in Test history.

Smiling Woods ties for ninth as Fowler wins with 61 (REUTERS) - Tiger Woods proved he could be competitive again after playing some of the best golf of his comeback with a final-round four-under 68 to tie for ninth at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Sunday.

No one could match Rickie Fowler, though. The world number nine birdied his first seven holes and won the elite event by four strokes thanks to a course record 11-under par 61 that left him at 18-under 270.

Woods was 10 strokes back but he had plenty of smiles as he answered the question of how he would do in his first tournament in nearly 10 months following spinal fusion surgery.

Pain free, the former world number one struck for six birdies and an eagle at the Albany course before two closing bogeys. He also had a double bogey in the elite 18-man event that featured eight of the world’s top 10.

“I showed some good signs,” Woods told NBC Sports after finishing the four days at eight-under 280. “I hit some really good shots out there (and am ready for) a bright future.... and no pain.”

The latter was especially important to the 41-year-old who once dominated the sport.

“I’ve had some tough times through the years with my back and then finally to come out on the good side and (be) able to get back out there and play. It’s pretty cool,” he said.

He also spoke positively about the future.

“When I was struggling with my back, the world seemed very small. Day to day stuff was very

difficult for me to do,” Woods said. “Now I am able to sit back and enjoy it a little bit more... It’s been really nice.”

He and his team will now sit down to determine how best to build his 2018 schedule for major championships.

“Play enough, but not play too much,” Woods said.

“I don’t know what golf courses I will be playing, what’s the best way to go about it. ...We’ll figure it out.”

Changes made to BVA’s December programme

THE Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) programme for the rest of the 2017 season has been amended because of circumstances beyond the control of the Association.

According to reports, the association has pushed back its Beach Volleyball competition as well as its visit to Georgetown to engage teams from the Capital city in a series of matches.

These two programmes were slated for this past weekend but will now be conducted by mid-December.

By Rajiv Bisnauth A rampant Guyana Jaguars outplayed the Barbados Pride to win the fifth round Cricket West Indies (CWI) Professional Cricket League (PCL) four-day game by eight wickets yesterday at the National Stadium, Providence.

A decidedly one-sided

outcome was not an entirely true reflection of the contest which ebbed and flowed through the first two-and-ahalf days.

Since then, however, the three-times defending champions have been on an uncompromising victory surge, thanks largely to their three seamers, who combined to haul them into a dominant position.

The seamers bagged all ten of Barbados Pride second innings wickets, to set the

hosts a victory target of just 178 runs, which they achieved with eight wickets to spare.

The result gave the Jaguars their fourth victory of the season and they have now extended their lead at the top of the table, moving to 86.4 points, having gained 21.6 from this match. Pride have now moved to 47.8, having collected 5.6.

Resuming the final day on 127-7, a lead of 106 runs, the Barbados Pride overnight batsmen, Jonathan Carter and

Mario Rampersaud, provided some resistance, but despite Carter’s defiant counter-attacking 75-ball 53, which included eight boundaries, it was only a matter of time and the Pride were bowled out in their second innings within 18 overs in the morning session for 197.

Pacer Keon Joseph, who started the demolition on the third afternoon, claimed the final three wickets. He first had Carter caught in the slip corridor before he had both Jamal Warrican (2) and Keon Harding (0), caught at the wicket. Rampersaud was left unbeaten on 27.

Financially strapped GBA seeks over $3m to send team to Caribbean C/ships THE financially strapped Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) is seeking to raise three and one half million dollars to send a 13-member team to defend its Caribbean Championship title it retained in Barbados last year, after winning the inaugural championship here in Guyana in 2015.

The championship is scheduled for December 13 to 16 in St. Lucia and the GBA has registered 13 boxers, two referee/judges and three coaches for the event.

The 13-member team of boxers will be spearheaded by Keevin Allicock and Colin Lewis , who both won gold medals at the last Caribbean development tournament (now Caribbean Championship), with Allicock going on to win a silver medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games in The Bahamas earlier this year.

GBA’s president Steve Ninvalle is optimistic that the local boxers will make a successful defence of the championship title.

However, the issue at hand is how will the team get to St. Lucia without funding.

According to reports, Ninvalle is quoted as saying “last year, we were forced to walk 100 miles to raise funds to send an 11-member team to Barbados and we received very little help then. That team won 10 gold medals and one silver. My sincere hope now is that the pledge and promises made when the team returned home are now made a reality.”

Ninvalle continued “We have dominated the Caribbean and in recent time have shown that we are capable of taking the best that the Commonwealth has to offer.”

Meanwhile, Referee/judges Lawrence Asannah and Maynard Wilson will sit exams while in St.Lucia, and once successful, they will be rewarded with their AIBA One Star badges.

Guyana, along with 17 Caribbean Islands, will contest this year’s championships in St. Lucia.
