By Alva Solomon THE authorities here are actively probing the unauthorised departure of two Cessna aircraft from the Eugene F Correia International Airport (EFCIA) at Ogle which occurred before daybreak Saturday.

Reports are that two Cessna 206 model aircraft bearing registration 8R-GMP and 8R-GTP left Ogle prior to sunrise (5:30 am) without the relevant air traffic clearances for departure. The pilots, who passed through the airport shortly after 04:00 hrs, also breached immigration and customs regulations in the process.

The two aircraft which are owned by Oxford Aviation, left for the Caribbean island of Grenada early Saturday. They were flown by the pilot and owner of the company, Munidat Persaud aka “Raj “and another pilot whose name was given only as “Vladimir.” On their way to Grenada, the pilots flew through Trinidad’s airspace undetected and without permission.

Reports out of Trinidad suggest that the pilots skilfully flew under the radar of the authorities on the twin-island republic. As they approached Grenada, the men informed air traffic control on the Spice Island that they were inbound to that island from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The move was meant to deliberately throw the authorities there off-guard, since it would have indicated that they were flying from a northern direction rather than from these shores.

According to reports from aviation sources, the pilots then island-hopped their way until the aircraft were detained farther north on the island of Anguilla.

At Ogle, the pilots presented their airport passes to security, boarded the planes and took off and aviation sources reported that the planes’ departure went undetected until a party in a court matter involving Oxford Aviation raised an alarm during the day on Saturday.

Minister within the Ministry of Public infrastructure, Annette Ferguson told the Guyana Chronicle that she was fully briefed on the incident by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). She confirmed that there is a High Court matter involving the aircraft which bars their owners from leaving Guyana.

That matter involves an incident which occurred at the Region Seven airstrip at Ekereku near the Venezuela border in which one of the two aircraft in question ran into another Cessna aircraft, registered as 8R-GHJ, a Cessna 172. The latter aircraft, which is owned by pilot Orlando Charles of Domestic

Airport spokesman Kit Nascimento told this publication Saturday that there had been no breach of security at the airport, as the men presented their security passes and were allowed to visit the planes.

“They told security that they were going to put something on board,” he noted. He said the men then proceeded to take off without filing flight plans or notifying anyone at customs, immigration or air traffic services.

Nascimento stressed that the airport management has no authority to stop an operator from departing the airport but rather, that responsibility rests with the GCAA. In addition, he said the airport was unaware of the court matter involving the company.

He added that the incident will be reviewed, but he stopped short of saying if it will see a rearrangement of aircraft pilots’

access to the airside at all times.

Guyana ‘s air traffic control services does not provide radar coverage, but rather handling based on radio communications with pilots, a form of air traffic control (ATC) known as procedural air traffic control. According to ATC sources, the pilots had planned their departure diligently, catering mainly for fuel stops along the trip.

At Ogle, the pilots requested an ATC clearance to operate outside the airport’s boundaries from the tower at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) at Timehri. To fly outside of Guyana, such requests are made days in advance and would require coordination between Guyana and the ATC agencies in the countries whose airspace the aircraft would transit.

Aviation sources reported that the operator is also indebted to several persons here and Saturday’s ultimate destination may have been the United States, where he operates a flight school.

Constable dies in car accident - on Linden Highway

CONSTABLE 22761 Ishaan Caines was reportedly driving a vehicle to Linden on Saturday when, at about 15:15hrs, he lost control of the vehicle in the vicinity of Bamia, on the Linden Soesdyke Highway, and died in the resulting crash.

This is the second fatal accident to have occurred in this area in the past two months.

“Information received (is)

that motor car PPP 7936 was going south along the eastern side of the road, travelling at a fast rate of speed. While going, the driver lost control of the said car, which turned turtle and ended up on the eastern side of the road on its hood,” Senior Superintendent Calvin Brutus, Commander of the police division which oversees Linden, related.

East Bank Demerara, was based at the Mackenzie Police Station in Linden, and was expected to report for duty on Saturday night.

A passenger of a mini bus which arrived on the scene moments after the accident reported that Caines was hurled some 30 feet from the wrecked car. He received several injuries and was rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Bamia, approximately quarter of a mile from Linden, has, over the past years, seen a number of accidents.

The previous last fatality to have occurred there was on May 2, 2016, when Rawl

Adams was killed. The situation in regard to Adams’s accident was similar to what occurred on Saturday, as it was raining at the time and his vehicle also turned turtle.

Chilean President, full house of CARICOM leaders for Guyana meeting

By Ariana Gordon CHILEAN President Michelle Bachelet and a full house of leaders of the regional trade and integration bloc CARICOM are expected in Guyana early next month for the annual retreat of Caribbean leaders.

The meeting is billed for July 4-6 and is expected to tackle a range of issues, including the decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union (EU), which has been a key trade and development partner for Guyana and the rest of the region.

Currently, the EU and CARICOM are engaged in the Economic Integration Programme, valued at 19 million Euros. The programme is directly related to the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME), one of the flagship programmes of CARICOM, which partly deals with the free movement of people across the region.

As of June this year, there was an implementation of 53% of the resources.

The CSME, the free movement of people, the GuyanaVenezuela border controversy and the Belize and Guatemala border issue, correspondent banking, CARICOM relations with Cuba and stateless citizens (The Dominican Republic) are among the other items on the agenda for the meeting.

Speaking during a forum Saturday, CARCIOM SecretaryGeneral Irwin La Rocque told the media that the agenda is not

set in stone and will encompass many other subjects.

“While we do have an agenda, the agenda evolves as we go along,” he stated.

Regarding the “special visit of the Chilean President, Ambassador LaRocque explained that CARICOM countries have good and friendly relations with Chile and the extension of an invitation to President Bachelet to attend the Heads of Government conference is not new.

He noted that her predecessor, Sebastián Piñera,had attended a previous Heads of Government conference in Grenada.

“The Community over the past years has made a conscious effort to build relations with our partners in our hemisphere.

It is not at the expense of our traditional partners by any stretch of the imagination, but Chile has been a partner to all of our countries bilaterally, in very good and friendly bilateral relations between Chile and all our members,” said Secretary-General La Rocque.

He noted that what started out as a courtesy call from the Chilean president to him has developed beyond that. He said CARICOM and Chile have decided to work much closer, while noting that there are many areas of “common interest” between the duo and it was felt that it was appropriate to invite President Bachelet.

“Chile is very, very strong in areas of disaster-related matters, relations between our universities and Chilean universities, scholarships, training, capacity-building… a number of things that are ongoing. We will be building on those,” he stated.

LaRocque reiterated the fact that Chile is a voice not only for this hemisphere but internationally. “We always use the opportunity to sensitise and to brief our special guests on some of the issues of concern to us.”

He said other dignitaries have been invited to the Heads of Government Conference that will open on July 4 at the National Cultural Centre. However, no formal interactions have been scheduled for those guests.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge, said Guyana is pleased to be co-hosting the conference. He emphasised that the meeting is part of a normal rotation of chairmanship, but on this occasion Guyana has stretched its hand out to host the meeting given the devastating natural disaster that had occurred in Dominica last year.

Dominica currently holds the chairmanship and was scheduled to host, but could not assume that responsibility as it is still recovering from the impact of Tropical Storm Erika, which battered that island nation last year.

“Guyana is the site for the meeting but is not chairing the meeting. Guyana is very happy to provide facilities to have CARICOM colleagues host the meeting,” said Greenidge.

MUST BE EXPLICIT The Council spokesman made clear that leaders cannot simply choose to interpret something Cameron says as the trigger without the prime minister saying clearly he means it to be.

“The notification of Article 50 is a formal act and has to be done by the British government to the European Council,” the spokesman said. “It has to be done in an unequivocal manner with the explicit intent to trigger Article 50.

“Negotiations of leaving and the future relationship can only begin after such a formal notification. If it is indeed the intention of the British government to leave the EU, it is therefore in its interest to notify as soon as possible.”

Since the shock vote on Thursday, won 52-48 percent by the Leave camp in defiance of polls and the bulk of the British establishment, there have been calls in Britain for the result to be reviewed or for parliament to ignore the referendum.

The second EU official, asked whether Britain could launch the process and then ask to stay, said that was not foreseen by the treaty: “Once you trigger it, you cannot take it back.”

If a state fails to agree a departure treaty with the others, EU law simply stops applying to it after two years.

Jamaica concerned about Brexit - Gov’t, Opposition believe Britain’s exit from EU will affect country

(Jamaica Observer) THE Jamaican Government and the Opposition Friday added their voice to the shellshocked reactions from around the world to the massive blow dealt to the European Union (EU) on Thursday after the United Kingdom (UK) voted in a referendum to give up its membership in the bloc of countries.

The 52 to 48 per cent vote, which saw a turnout of 30 million Britons, took place amidst fears that the move could be economically devastating for Europe and Britain itself, which has been a part of the EU for 43 years.

Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith said yesterday that,t notwithstanding the close margin: “Ultimately, the people have spoken and, on the basis of the declared results, those in support of the UK’s withdrawal of its membership from the

EU have carried the day.”

She said, however, that the outcome will have significant implications for Jamaica-UK relations and possibly for Jamaica-EU relations, noting that the vote to leave the EU “means that the UK will eventually cease to be part of the relevant arrangements that govern Jamaica-EU relations, including the ACP-EU Cotonou Partnership Agreement and the CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement”.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said that there is no doubt that Britain’s exit from the EU will have implications for Jamaica on a number of levels. “The Government of Jamaica is actively monitoring and assessing the evolving global environment to position our country to advantageously manage these developments.”

Even while the EU and the rest of the world tried to come to grips with the re-

sults of Brexit, British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was strongly against exiting the EU, yesterday gave warning that he would be stepping aside to make way for the transition. Cameron, who addressed the Jamaican Parliament just under a year ago, had warned that Brexit would hurt Britain.

Cameron, who spoke from from 10 Downing Street, said that he would be leaving his successor to negotiate the terms of Britain’s exit from the 28-member bloc.

The UK still has another two years to work out the formal severing of ties with the EU, as provided for under the Lisbon Treaty. The European Union — often known as the EU — is an economic and political partnership involving 28 European countries.

“This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but I do believe it is in the national interest to have a period of stability and then the new leadership

required,” Cameron stated.

“I was absolutely clear about my belief that Britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the European Union, and I made clear the referendum was about this and this alone — not the future of any single politician, including myself. But the British people have made a very clear decision to take a different path and, as such, I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction,” he added.

Cameron said a new prime minister should be instated in time for the Conservative party conference in October.

According to the Guardian newspaper, several of the EU’s top leaders have already lashed

out at the decision to leave, saying that Britain should act on its vote to leave the union “as soon as possible”, and that there will be no renegotiation of its membership.

According to the UK publication, the presidents of the European council, commission and parliament — Donald Tusk, Jean-Claude Juncker and Martin Schulz respectively — as well as the prime minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte have all said any delay to Britain’s exit would “unnecessarily prolong uncertainty”, and in a joint statement said: “This is an unprecedented situation, but we are united in our response.”

It is not known at this

point precisely how the dynamics of trade arrangements such as the EPA as well as other agreements that Jamaica has with the EU will be impacted

by Britain’s new status.

Opposition spokesperson Dr Morais Guy said yesterday that Jamaicans in Britain will undoubtedly be impacted by the exit and said the Opposition was also “immediately concerned”.

Already there has been an impact among investors across the world with the pound sterling dropping to its lowest level in three decades. Dr Guy said this early sign of a weakened pound sterling could also have some economic implications for Jamaica.

A divided United Kingdom THE voters of the United Kingdom (UK) cast their ballots on Thursday, 23rd June, in a referendum to decide whether to remain or exit the European Union (EU). The results showed a divided UK. The people of Britain and Wales voted to exit EU, but the Scottish and those of Northern Island voted to stay. The divided votes have implications on many fronts.

While the World Stock Market’s trading prices plummeted at the news and in the face of uncertainty as to what will happen to the EU and UK trade relations, given the latter is the Union’s largest trading partner, it has internal implications for the UK. At first look, some questions immediately come to mind: How will the Government of Britain -- legislature and executive -- treat with this matter? How will the monarchy treat with a divided Kingdom? How will the Government in Scotland respond? What are the implications for the states’ sovereignty and relations with the UK? How will the EU respond to the expressed will of the British people? And how will both the EU and UK proceed?

An answer to Scotland came on Friday, 24th June, when First Minister and Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon said officials would plan for a “highly likely” vote on separation from the rest of the UK. In 2014, Scotland went to referendum for its independence, with the votes going to remain in the UK. That being said, the questions posed are likely to be asked, even though answering will be complex, given the complexity in the relationships present and going forward.

What it has said, however, is that the EU has taken a blow, and the platforms upon which its existence stands will be impacted.

Where its Economic Community focuses on a trade and economic bloc driven by free movement of goods and services within the Common Market, reducing regional inequalities, preserving the environment, promoting human rights, and investing in education and research, it is reasonable to think that such could better be achieved through collective voice and action. Externally to Europe, it could also have an impact on the EU-CARIFORUM (CARICOM Member States and the Dominican Republic) Economic Partnership Agreement.

In a world growing increasingly complex through the ever-present threat of terrorism, narco-trafficking, corrupt government, increasing poverty, human rights violations,

climate change/ environmental protection, and ballooning refugee problem, solutions to man’s induced problems are better achieved through convergence of influences and decision-making.

In this new world, traditional notions of sovereignty no longer rigidly apply, given that in return for the benefits and protection secured being in any association, treaties, declarations, conventions and charters are needed in order to ensure universal principles are upheld and objectives achieved.

The EU will most likely meet sooner, rather than later, to assess the implications of Britain’s decision and to chart a course on the way forward. Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel has, even before Thursday’s vote, called for wide ranging discussions on the role of the EU. It is not unfair to say there was a general view or expectation that the people of Britain would have voted to remain, given the stirring presentation made by Prime Minister David Cameron, outlining the options and acknowledging the voices of dissent, and the violent death of Member of Parliament Jo Cox, who was an advocate to remain. Those who wanted to remain would probably be asking the question: Was it too little too late?

What is certain is that political watchers, the people of UK, their governments and the monarchy have to be asking tough questions, including examining the reasons that drove the vote one way or the other; the message being sent by the people -- were the people properly informed and educated on the EU? And what could have been done differently to provide

the assurances the people needed living in their society?

Among the driving reasons for the exit vote was that of the handling of the immigration influx, including that of refugees.

The pressure, it was felt, was being brought on the social services systems, including the longevity of the National Health Scheme, in a society where healthcare is free. Concern about the British currency and the notion that Britain was losing its sovereignty being in the EU were also factors.

There is, additionally, the other concern that Britain’s vote can have a domino effect, given that France’s Marine Le Pen, leader of the anti-EU National Front Party, has been clamouring for the French to exit the EU. External to the EU, the action of the British gives rise to the question about associations of similar nature, as in our region with institutions such as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM); The African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP); Organisation of American States (OAS); United Nations; and International Labour Organisation, to name some.

It is no secret that the people of the countries in the region question the benefit of being in CARICOM, though it should be said that such a question is in part fuelled by insufficient public communication about the role and benefits of CARICOM, and at times seeming collusion among the leaders in the face of acts by government(s) that are inimical to citizens’ wellbeing.

If the British vote has achieved any positive, it is that of a wake-up call to leaders to listen to the people and address their concerns.

Rethinking city spaces in Georgetown WE continue to be amazed by the many different stories which are being peddled in certain sections of the media and other places about the installation and operation of parking meters in the city.

To be honest, we have no problem with the current debate and public conversation on this new municipal innovation. In fact, we welcome it, because it affords us an opportunity to tell the truth about this project, which has enormous potential to reshape not only the cityscape but the general culture of the city.

However, the installation and operation of those meters are just small components of a wider system designed by the Council to properly organise the city.

Our objective is to redesign and modernise the capital in a way that allows it to be efficient culturally, socially, environmentally and economically; it must stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the great cities of the world.

A NEW MINDSET This requires a new mindset; the way we think about Georgetown. It demands that the city’s government, this being the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) rethink the use, conservation, protection and sustainable development of its resources. These include human resources, water, and space.

Perhaps the most important resource is space, because nothing can exist outside of it; everything exists inside of space.

Mostly, what the city has to offer is this resource: Space.

At the level of the city, all of our activities, from the cradle to the grave, focus on creating, developing and designing, renting, giving and leasing space.

A substantial portion of our laws deals with the good management of this resource.

It is a scarce resource that has been taken for granted for generations, in Georgetown. It is also, collectively owned by all the citizens of

Georgetown. They were born into it; they pay taxes for its maintenance; they have a legitimate right to access it. If a private individual or group of individuals, a company or corporation wishes to use public space for business or any other private enterprise then citizens could be denied their rightful access to their space. Therefore, such private enterprise or business must adequately compensate citizens for using their space.

This must be done through their local governments.

For ages, in Georgetown, individuals and corporations have been taking up public space without even offering adequate compensation to citizens. For example, many big businesses have concerted portions of our alleyways and other drainage infrastructure, without permission, making those portions impervious facilitating overtopping during heavy rains. Others have appropriated parapets, pavements and other thoroughfares making it very difficult for ordinary citizens to use those facilities.

In some cases, senior citizens and children are forced to walk in the face of oncoming traffic, on busy streets, just because some individual or company decided that they can do more business by spreading out their merchandise beyond their selling point or boundaries of their legitimate business places.

PARKING Then we have parking.

For as long as anyone can remember, motorists have been parking for free. In the Central Business District, motorists just park for as long as they wish, wherever they find space.

It is so free and easy that taxi operators, who are registered with established companies with bases and radios, find it more lucrative to park on Council roads wherever, whenever for free, apparently, without a care in the world.

Also, many of the taxi bases are on council’s reserves; the owners pay zero to the council. Yet, the mu-

nicipality has to deal with all the challenges posed by this so called free parking including high economic, social and environmental costs to the city and local residents.

In order to reverse this trend, the Council must begin to manage city spaces in a way that is beneficial to all citizens; not just private enterprises.

One way by which we can do this is the installation and operation of parking meters, particularly in the Central Business District of the city. This will allow, inter alia, reduction of traffic congestion; improve mobility; increase in parking space availability; incentive for people to use public transportation; reduction in pollution and its attendant evils; revenue for the city; and boost investors’ confidence in the city.

We are aware of the view held by a few that the city does not have to install parking meters to raise money.

The trouble is that those very individuals have not been

able to suggest practical and viable alternatives by which the Council can have the requisite funds to fulfill its statutory mandate independent of Central Government.

And why should a city, with by-laws, which make provisions for it to generate sufficient revenues to manage its affairs, depend on Central Government, or any other agency for that matter, for money? It simply does not make good sense.

It is very clear to us that the Council needs to rethink the way it manages city space. Our commitment is to do just that.

Encrusted in our commitment is an urgency and awareness of where we want to go as a city. We are confident that, as we push ahead in this particular direction, not only will we see order, beauty and excellence, but also sustainable development, progress and prosperity.

MMA\ADA must take full responsibility for Region 5 flooding Dear Editor, AS A resident of Region Five and one of its APNU+AFC councillors, I would like to take this opportunity to publicly express my views on the recent flooding that occurred in the villages from Golden Grove to Number 30.

As a regional representative of the people, I would like to offer my apologies for the recent flooding, and wish to assure everyone that all of the APNU+AFC RDC Councillors will continue to represent you to the best of our ability.

I know that many have suffered economically during the floods, losing their livestock, cash crops, etc; but quick and speedy action from the RDC, Central Government and the Ministry of Agriculture saw the water receding, and the lives of the residents will again soon become normal.

I would also like to state that this is not the first time the area has accumulated water above land level. We all know that those areas are prone to flooding because they are very low. Some residents have even built their houses without first filling the land, and when the rain falls heavily, it leaves their yards flooded.

But, over the past years, we have seen that whenever the rain falls heavily and the areas flood, the water recedes quickly because of the presence of a proper drainage system and

cleaning of inter-locked drains within the villages.

This time, however, it has not been like that, and those who ought to be blamed must be blamed without any form of feeling sorry for them. It must be known that MMA\ADA is responsible for the outfall channels\koker\sluices and drainage canals in Region Five.

MMA\ADA is responsible for serving people living from Mahaica to Ithaca, but this does not seem to the case. Over the past years, MMA\ADA has been focusing much on the area that stretches from Abary to Mahaica, and leaving the other areas in Region 5 alone.

MMA\ADA must be blamed for the flooding in these villages, because since this APNU+AFC government took office, the management of MMA has become lackadaisical in carrying out the works that it is mandated to do.

On several occasions, I personally called the General Manager of MMA\ADA about drainage situation in Region 5, and have been told a story of jim cock mek ram goat. And because of that, the people suffer.

On many occasions, I spoke to the GM about dams and canals for rice farmers, and also about clearing of outlets from various villages, and was promise that something will be done. But it was never done.

ADA are always at the workshop, or they are far in the back dams. I have personally spoken to the GM on several occasions over the past months about the drains that need to be clean because the rains will be coming, but he turned a deaf ear to my entreaties. When I contacted the others, they say that the decision is not in their hands, but with those in higher authority.

I can recall that on April 30th, 2016 I was asked to visit the Trafalgar Sluice, and upon my visit I saw MMA workers trying very hard to get the pontoon into the water, so that they can take the excavators on it to dredge the said outfall, because it needs to be dug so that the water can be thrown easily into the sea. (I have pictures to prove). But it seems that nothing was done since.

I keep calling MMA, asking about the position but always having an answer in favour of hearing. Under the years of the PPP, millions were used to do drainage works by MMA, but nothing was done properly. Millions were spent to build a bridge and sluice\ koker at the Number 12 outfall, but it’s almost five years and the doors have never opened, and I was made to understand that there are full-time operators there.

Millions were spent on various projects under the

PPP, and those projects hardly worked. This Government needs to restructure the entire management of MMA. Too much nonsense is taking place there.

Mr. Editor, imagine there is climate change and the mangroves are being taken away over the years. Over the years, the sea defences have been breaking and water has been coming closer to the residents, but MMA seems not to care to make new kokers, because the old ones are left where they are -- miles in the sea, because of the sea defence erosion. As a matter of fact, they never rebuilt a koker in those areas, and I don’t think any other area had a koker built, to my knowledge.

Those village kokers would have helped tremendously to ease or stop the flooding, but MMA didn’t care during the PPP time, and it seems they don’t care now either.

Everything that the PPP handled was political, even the Enhancement workers that the so-called ‘champion of the earth’ invented to have votes. Those are the workers that should be cleaning village drains so that they cannot be silted up. Under former President Jagdeo they were employed by MMA and the D&I, then Irfaan Ali saw something in it, so they were transferred to the Housing Ministry.

They employed a man (who is now at MMA) to run

the work throughout the region, while each NDC has a supervisor to supervise the workers.

I will give an example of those workers who work under the Bath\Woodley Park NDC (anyway, it’s a PPP NDC and the area where I live). Since this APNU+AFC government took office, they hardly work for the required four hours per day, and do about thirty minutes works when they do work. I can recall when the West Berbice Expo was on at the Bath Community Centre Ground, the NDC had to ensure that the area was clean, especially the drains and the entrance, but it was not so. I approached the DREO, who is responsible for Local Government, when I heard that the said NDC overseer told the workers they were not to do any work in that area because the Hon. Prime Minister will be coming.

I recall sitting in the DREO’s office and he will make tens of calls to the said NDC overseer, and she would disregard the man’s orders. I can also recall that the man supervising the workers, a pensioner from the PPP village group, told the DREO that they had finished work for the day.

The workers will turn out for work at about 7am and finish working at about 7:30-8am; that’s not four hours.

Anyway, the call was made around 9:15 that morning, and

they finished work.

The Ministry of Communities, which I think is still responsible for those workers, must address this issue urgently. No work should equate to no pay. They should know that this work is not PPP work, it’s the Government’s work. Those are the people that are also contributing to flooding in our communities by not doing their work although they have been provided with equipment\tools.

So, overall, the management of MMA should take full responsibility for the flooding in the area from Golden Grove to Number 30, which is severely hit. Because of their carefree style, we are faced will flooding, and people have had to suffer damage to their livelihoods.

I call on the authorities not to allow this experience to go so easy; correct it now, or else the management of MMA will become more complacent and carefree in the years to come.

I must thank the residents for their cooperation, and also call on them -- although the protest was peaceful -- to made contact with the relevant authorities and voice their concerns before taking to the streets or roadways to protest.

The Chamber, on that occasion, was able to showcase its 50 years of service, not only to the commercial community, but to the country as a whole.

Notably, by that time, it had developed “a reputation for competence and efficiency, with a knowledge of matters that went beyond that relating to commerce and trade,” the Chamber said.

At this juncture, as Guyana celebrated its Golden Jubilee having attained independence in 1966, the Chamber thought it opportune to examine economic progress made to date, asking the question: “What Next?”

Past Chairman Lance Hinds noted that it is prudent to analyse where “we are” within the economic and political direction taken since independence.

“We at the Chamber believe that we are a nation at the crossroads in a social, economic and political sense,” Hinds contended, adding: “2016 finds us 5th in the CARICOM Community, in terms of economic capacity.”

MORE FEMALE LEADERS It was noted that members are fully involved in the operations of the Chamber, but a call was made for more female leadership at the level of the GCCI. The Chamber will be moving to ensure that those members who do not enjoy the level of representation needed, can begin to do so.

Work is continuing apace on strengthening their Business Information Eco System and encouraging Government to accelerate its expenditure, especially on approved mon-

etary allocations.

They will, over the next few weeks, continue to work on their short, medium and long-term strategies for development.

Meanwhile, he said the Chamber is looking to the Ministry of Business for information in terms of national economic development.

Meanwhile, Minister of Business Dominic Gaskin said while it would seem so, the first 50 years of Guyana’s independence are not that complicated. In fact, he said, Guyana has been pretty consistent in its approach to managing this diverse and wealthy country that “we all own or should own,” but said there must be a genuine desire to learn from “our major past mistakes” - the most useful lessons for building a better future.

Minister Gaskin said he is of the view that Guyana’s failure to advance to a better global position, is largely as a result of the prevailing political attitude which emphasised political party over country.

In this context, the minister affirmed: “I believe we can take the most valuable lesson and apply it going forward. And that lesson is that Guyana is more important than any one person, party, ethnicity, religion, gender or issue.”

He added: “And I do not believe that we as a people do not know this. I believe that we have allowed politics to influence our behaviour towards our own country to the extent that half of us at any one time did not feel a

strong enough urge to participate meaningfully in its development.”

The minister admitted that while he is not unaware of the feeling of exclusion that can result from years or decades of political, social or economic marginalisation, at the end of the day,” we are all Guyanese and this country belongs to us and we all have a right as well as a responsibility that comes with being citizens of a country, to contribute to the development of Guyana.”

He said despite being said to be at the proverbial “bottom of the class” and with half the team on go-slow, his greatest hope is the fact that Guyana has been able to achieve both growth and stability.

There are however, some areas that require attention.

These include making it easier to do business in Guyana and making Guyana more attractive to investors.

This is being addressed by two very comprehensive reports relating to the economic well-being of countries around the world: The Doing Business Report and the Global Competiveness Report.

Both comprise a number of broad indicators, each broken down into specific indicators of how easily or costly a business process is to complete, or how competitive Guyana is for each factor examined.

The Doing Business Reports cover areas such as registering property, getting electricity, access to credit, dealing with construction

permits, paying taxes, protecting investors, trading across borders and enforcing contracts. The Competitiveness Report covers areas such as infrastructure, education, innovation, macro-economic development, financial institutions and financial market development, among others.

Together, these two reports, based on actual surveys conducted, highlight most of the concerns raised by businesses operating in Guyana.

And so, in addressing the specific deficiencies identified in those reports, Guyana is in fact addressing most of the concerns of its businesses community.

TACKLING SHORTCOMINGS The Ministry of Business, the minister said, is currently working on a programme to tackle individually the indicators on the Doing Business Report.

“We are working with a team from the World Bank which is providing technical assistance in several areas,” he disclosed.

Additionally, the ministry has just had a legal consultant engaged to identify and list the new legislation as well as the amendments to existing legislation required in order to enhance the existing legislative framework under which businesses are regulated.

Likewise, an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) consultant has been engaged to examine and identify the deficiencies in ICT capabilities in agencies

involved in transactions with businesses.

He told of working on developing an electronic trade-facilitation system known as SWAPS, that will completely change the way Guyana processes import and export licences, permits and transactions, so that these can be done online in a short space of time through what is called a single window.

Unveiling a host of assured interventions in the pipeline, which are just but the tip of the iceberg, the minister said.

“We will also be addressing the problem areas identified in the Competitiveness Report through an appropriate public-private dialogue body. We believe that by working our way through all the areas where we score badly and making the required improvements, that we will be able to make Guyana a much, much better place to do business,” Minister Gaskin assured.

Essentially, small businesses will feature prominently. According to Minister Gaskin, small businesses must also have a fair chance of success, since the Government sees small businesses as capable of making significant contributions to the economy.

Gaskin also spoke of “A Green Economy” powered by affordable and renewable energy, driven by foreign earnings derived from exports of a range of value-added goods and services.

“The future and what it holds for our country need not be a mystery,” Minister Gaskin assured.

Renewable energy to be sourced from Iwokrama

PRESIDENT David Granger intends to use Iwokrama as a source from which to harness renewable energy as Guyana continues to find creative ways of pushing its green agenda.

The President made this announcement on his weekly television programme The Public Interest, aired on the National Communications Network (NCN) on Friday.

The Head of State, just last week, hinted that the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development will be used as a flagship project by the APNU+AFC Administration for the harvesting of renewable energy. However, he did not reveal what forms of renewable energy the Government was looking at. Quizzed on the last episode of the programme, he disclosed that moves will be made to source solar and water power from Iwokrama.

“We could promote the use of sustainable energy, particularly solar and wind and water power. If you stood on the banks of Iwokrama, you could see the Essequibo river. You can dip your hand in the Essequibo, because it’s always moving. We can have what they call run-of-the-river

hydro; you don’t have to have a huge waterfall or a huge reservoir,” the President said.

He then disclosed the possibility of solar energy being generated in the Rupununi, given that part of Iwokrama is in the North Rupununi and part is in the South (Potaro Siparuni). He noted that, during this time, there are about 13 hours of sunlight during the day, which opens the opportunity for “huge solar farms.”

And while contending that the forms of renewable energy from this arrangement would largely be solar and water, he noted that wind energy generation would be light, given the heavy forest cover.

“So, because of this, I would say the best opportunities for sustainable energy will be solar and water,” the President said. He also contended that the future of Guyana is in Iwokrama.

“Without biodiversity, without sustainable exploitation of our resources, we will not be able to develop this country quickly and fully,” he said.

The Head of State reiterated that the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and

Development will be used as a project through which people can harvest renewable energy in a sustainable manner.

“I see Iwokrama as a big laboratory; a big laboratory that will preserve our flora and fauna for future generations,” the President added.

This announcement by the President comes just one year after he committed to working closely with Iwokrama with the aim of restructuring its agenda. That commitment was made in June 2015 following a meeting with Iwokrama’s Chief Executive Officer, Dane Gobin, along with Conservationist Major General (Ret’d) Joe Singh and Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman, at a time when the centre was operating at a shortfall of US$1.3M. The CEO had explained during an interview at the time that the Centre needed an average of US$2.5M to effectively execute its mandate, which is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of tropical rainforests in a manner that would lead to lasting ecological, economic and social benefits for the people of Guyana.

CARICOM anxiety…

‘Brexit’ on agenda for C’bean Leaders Guyana meeting BRITAIN’S exit from the European Union has left such anxiety within the Caribbean integration movement that “Brexit” will form part of the agenda for the July CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in Guyana.

“There is an anxiety over the exit, and we have concerns because the United Kingdom is a considerable player in the arrangements in the European Union,” CARICOM Secretary-General (SG) Irwin LaRocque said on Saturday in discussion with reporters at the Foreign Service Institute.

“The relationship with Europe is strong…I do not see something catastrophic happening overnight; the situation has to evolve,” the CARICOM chief assured as he noted that CARICOM is not without friends in the EU. By a small majority, the United Kingdom voted two days ago to exit the European Union (EU), reducing that political and economic bloc to 27 member states. Now that the UK referendum is over, ending years of debate that could be traced back to the UK’s Margaret Thatcher administration from 1979 to 1990, the country’s government must activate Article 50 of the EU Treaty, which spells out the procedure for countries to follow in quitting the

28-country political and economic bloc.

Guyana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Carl Greenidge, told reporters some time ago that in the short-term he does not foresee any consequences which would affect trade between Guyana and the European Union.

As one of the countries grouped in the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) bloc, Guyana, like sister countries in the CARICOM movement, benefits from funding from the European Development Fund (EDF).

Greenidge acknowledged the UK’s role as not only a CARICOM voice in the EU, since most of CARICOM’s member states were former British colonies, but also as “a significant contributor to the budget of the European Union.”

Now that the UK has opted to quit the 28-member EU, that country must activate Article 50 of the EU Treaty, which spells out the process for exiting. The process that finalises the UK’s exit could last some two years.

Immediately following the ‘Brexit’ announcement, Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron announced his resignation, after just winning his second term in office.

Cameron’s resignation takes effect from October, when a conference of his Conservative Party would decide who is that country’s next leader.

PM Cameron said he would guide his country through the process of severing ties with the EU, but would step aside to allow for younger leadership to steer the country into its next stage.

The EU released a statement in the wake of the unprecedented vote in favour of a country leaving the 28-member political and economic bloc, which could be traced back to 1973.

The EU has since called for Britain to move swiftly with its negotiation process so as to not create any uncertainty against the historic vote.

At the same time, the EU maintains that negotiations with the UK will conclude areas for continued and future collaboration.

The CARICOM Heads of Government Summit will open at the National Cultural Centre on July 4, and will go until July 6. The region’s leaders and a few other international figures, including Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, will be present at that meeting.

A GUYANESE MEDLEY: Diversity and sameness, parking meters and salary increases

WE should not allow the evil of racism and Guyana's frustrating politics to drive us to border on demeaning or denying some uplifting aspects of our identities. Identity is complex; it is partly who we say we are and partly how others perceive us. It is also a historical phenomenon that is sometimes determined by migration -- forced and voluntary —- and by people bonding together in the face of real and perceived threats to their honour.

There are different forms of identity -— Civic (Guyanese, Trinidadian, American, Pakistani, Nigerian); Cultural/Ethnic (African, Indian, Irish, Latino, Jewish, Hindu, Moslem, Yoruba); Racial (black, brown, white, yellow, red) — to name three. There are times when civic and ethnic identities are the same, as in Japan and Portugal. This is not the case in Guyana and the overwhelming majority of countries in the world.

We have, over the years, tried with little success to fuse those three identities into a single Guyanese identity. This has to do with the fact that the experiences of our various ethnic groups have generally been different -- they came under different circumstances and their lived experiences have generally been different. Their relationship with each other has been largely, though not exclusively, grounded in competition, sometimes conflictual competition; so their collective construction of what Guyana is will vary. We have to come to terms with the uncomfortable reality that though we refer to ourselves as Guyanese, there is no common view of what that means —- not politically; not culturally; and crucially, not on what Guyana’s history has been.

As an aside, people usually raise the issue of where do ‘Mixed’ people fit in the ethnic or racial scheme. Well, neither ethnicity nor race is biological. Mixed people are part of the

ethnicity in which they are socialized. In the racial schema or “Colour Code”, there is no mixed colour. The exception is Apartheid South Africa, which created a racial group for mixed people, called “Coloured.”

Before 1966, we were not Guyanese; we were forced to be British, but most of our foreparents rejected that imposed identity and used instead their ethnic identities. If Guyana goes off the map, as some countries do, one will have to affirm another identity. At the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Soviets became Russians, Armenians and Ukrainians again. Later Czechoslovakians became Czechs and Slovakians.

So when we say we are Guyanese, we are affirming part of our identity; we are saying we join with other people living in this geographical space with defined boundaries, which has a distinct constitution and sovereign government. But we have to make a distinction between affirming one of our multiple identities at any given time and the fact that we do have more than one identity.

Affirming one's Civic identity, as most people do, is laudable. In fact, the use of the Civic identity in an ethno-culturally and politically plural society is a strong affirmation of cross-ethnic commitment to making the civic space an all-inclusive one. But that does not mean one’s other identities disappear. Being Guyanese does not erase our other identities; it is just that we choose to affirm Guyanese.

Difference is part of human nature. It is actually a positive thing. It is when we attribute meaning to difference and then use power to actualize and normalize those meanings that difference becomes negative.

Guyana is a work in progress. We have to get to the point where we can all, in our differences, find sameness in the Guyanese experience. Sameness, without acknowledgement of obvious differences, would always be suspect and ultimately transient. Ironically, in trying to silence difference, we have widened it, thus making it easier for politicians to exploit it for accumulation of power and the privilege that comes with unfettered power.

THE PARKING METER CONTROVERSY The controversy over the installation of parking meters all across the city brings to the fore several issues, some of which I don’t care to get into. But the one that stands out for me goes to the very core of democratic decision-making, and that is consensus. The fact that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are on opposite sides of the matter is not in itself a bad thing; disagreements are normal. I am very sure that the introduction of parking meters will, in the long run, be a positive development for the city; and I am equally sure that the Mayor means well.

But it would have been refreshing if there were widespread consultations and discussions with an eye on consensus before a final decision was arrived at. It is not sufficient to have a new Council; there has to be a new dispensation, a new way of doing things, a new culture of governance. That is the only way to inspire in the wider society confidence that the change they voted for is real. The very notion of coalitions presupposes deeper-than-normal consultation. Such consultation should even have taken place at the level of the citizens; after all, the decision would affect them.

Why the hurry to get the meters installed? Are the Mayor and her supporters on the Council not worried about appearing to be arrogant? At a time when the society is sensitive to corruption and nepotism, one would think that there would have been some caution on the part of the Mayor and her team. After the fallout from the manner in which removal of the vendors was handled, the City Council could ill-afford this new controversy.

One does not relish the intervention of the Central Government, but given the depth of the controversy, I think the Central Government has not done itself any harm in insisting on a review of the contract. In fact, I think that in the end such a course of action would save the Mayor and the Council from long-term embarrassment.

Transparency has to be paramount in the dealings of Government at all levels.

SALARY INCREASES Salary increases based on performance is not in itself a bad thing; it could help to motivate workers to improve their output. But I am skeptical. One has to be careful that that approach does not lead to a hierarchy at the workplace that could, in the long run, defeat the purpose. Further, one has to be careful that it is not used to discriminate against workers who may be at odds with management or are too vocal at the work place. Attention should also be placed on the social circumstances of the individual workers, because workers come from different households, and they bring to the workplace their different experiences.

There are kinds of social factors that could influence workers’ performances. Workers from stable households may start with an advantage. The system of evaluation therefore has to be fair, just and transparent. Perhaps a compromise could be reached that would see the bulk of the salary increases being given across-the-board and the remainder being based on performance.

Concerns for the management of the people’s business THE people sometimes get the impression that those tasked with the responsibility to manage their business are comfortable settling for mediocrity. The summation is based on the manner in which important issues are handled.

In the event it may have escaped the councillors, the supporters are protesting the performance of the Government they elected, including those councillors, as they remain content to prevent the Council from meeting, planning, developing, and executing a programme to bring relief to the region.

There is a situation involving the APNU+AFC councillors of Region Five that deserves revisiting. These representatives of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) have decided that no statutory meeting will be held until the PPP/C-elected Chairman apologises to President Granger for not attending the event at which he handed over school buses to that region.

It is instructive to note that there is no public pronouncement by the President requesting an apology from the person who is being asked to apologise. If the person who is perceived to be offended has not asked for an apology, then a complaint has presumably not been made. In spite of this, the Council’s business is being stymied, pending an apology.

The absence of a chairman at an event that is clouded in controversy among the various political groups is not enough to demand an apology and disruption of systems that have been put in place for meetings to be held.

Statutory meetings are important. They give leaders or representatives the opportunity to plan and develop programmes, and give guidance to the Regional Executive Officer and his/ her team in executing their tasks.

The people of Region Five are presently affected by floods. Crops and livestock are being affected, and the health situation may be challenging. While these problems and threats are taking place, elected representatives are exerting energy on demanding an apology, instead of meeting and correcting a situation deserving of their attention.

From a political standpoint, it is not astute politics, and it is playing into the hands of the Government’s political rival.

From a humanitarian standpoint, it is wrong; from a governance standpoint it is an abrogation of constitutional responsibility. Noteworthy is that, as the APNU+AFC councillors prevent the Council from functioning, their supporters are being affected by the floods and are on the streets protesting this dislocation and inconvenience.

It was during the Jagdeo presidency that this nation witnessed its worst period of extra-judicial killings and gang wars, which he failed to arrest and, by extension, can be considered as having benefited from the mayhem that was created in the society.

Today he thinks he is elevating what could potentially have been an issue with grave consequences by suggesting that Khemraj Ramjattan, Moses Nagamootoo and Glenn Lall -- publisher of the Kaieteur News -- could have planned the grenade attack on the business.

Lall is correct in his response that Jagdeo should be behind bars. His dastardly stewardship of the economy, policy of economic genocide in the African community, running roughshod over the people, and now levelling accusation of a crime without providing evidence are all deserving of him being made a guest of the state.

The police should have moved to call on Jagdeo to provide the evidence, and if he fails to do so, he should be charged and placed before the court for public mischief.

The events of 2002-2006, when he was president, cannot be allowed to go unnoticed. Many of the young men, whose mothers are still to see their corpses, were deemed criminals by him, which tacitly aided and abetted their execution.

What Jagdeo did to this nation is deserving of him being placed before the International Court in The Hague, and tried for his crimes against humanity. The fact that he sits in the National Assembly, the nation’s highest decision-making forum, and the Government has not seen to it that he be held accountable for his stewardship of this country must be of concern to us; and we must see to it that Government acts in accordance with our wishes.

The Parliament, in addition to holding Government accountable, is also the place to hold the Opposition and every parliamentarian accountable.

LINDEN TELEVISION There continues to be misguided action by the newly elected Regional Chairman and Mayor on who should control the community television in Linden, with the apparent support of the Government. These persons are seeking to do the said thing that Lindeners fought against in 2012 when they protested the PPP/C’s obsession with controlling everything and every space.

This television station belongs to the people of Linden, not the politicians. The people have made known that they do not want their television -- acquired through the blood, sweat and tears of bauxite workers -- being controlled by the politicians.

It was the general secretaries of the two bauxite unions, GB&GWU and GMWU -- Linden Smith and Morris Drakes -- who initiated engagement with Greens Construction Company that resulted in the station being handed to the people under the leadership of Haslyn Parris as CEO of GUYMINE. The intent of the Linden TV Trust is to put control of this asset in the hands of those to whom it belongs -- the community.

The 2012 Agreement between Region Ten RDC and Central Government caters for the establishment of an Economic Committee. The parties that form the government campaigned to honour the agreement, after the PPP/C government refused to do so. When in opposition, they called on the PPP/C to honour the agreement, and even brought to the National Assembly a motion to this effect, and voted in favour of it.

Today, instead of the present regional chairman and mayor of Linden being preoccupied with being on the TV board, duty requires of them to address the establishment of that economic committee, which would develop a plan to bring economic empowerment to the people.

NOTE WELL The PPP/C leadership never thought it would be in the Opposition. Arrogance, rapacious conduct and abuse of the people and their resources have placed them there.

The APNU+AFC can learn a lesson from the PPP/C, even moreso that their supporters are less tolerant of being treated with contempt on any pretext that it is “we time.”

Harmon meets with East Berbice-Corentyne residents, contractors

MINISTER of State, Mr. Joseph Harmon, recently visited several communities in East Berbice/Corentyne (Region Six) and interacted with residents and contractors in those areas to ensure that the community members are involved during the construction process for rehabilitation works, following the award of $130 million in contracts for work to be done in several communities.

High Dam residents in Caracas, West Canje gladly welcomed the Minister and expressed relief that the road in that area would finally be paved. Several also took the opportunity to air other concerns, including the need for a recreational centre for children, the installation of street lights, and the alleviation of flooding that occurs in the area, the Ministry of the Presidency has stated.

Minister Harmon pledged to address matters of flooding as a priority, as it affects residents’ livelihoods. He pledged that, at a later date, efforts would be made to look into the installation of street lights -- which he noted is a larger project and is not just for a specific community -- and paving other access roads in the area.

The Minister said that once the weather clears, paving of the High Dam Road, a 453-metre stretch into the community, should take just a month to be completed, according to the contractor. He also noted that the entire project should be completed in two months.

Minister Harmon then paid a visit to the Middle Walk Dams of both Lancaster and Liverpool villages on the Corentyne, to assess the work to be done. At those locations, some residents were primarily concerned with obtaining some form of employment from the work that would soon begin on the

roads. Minister Harmon agreed that residents should have this benefit, and he said that was part of the reason for his visit.

“It is important that the community is involved in what is happening here. And you should also ensure that people from the community are employed. I want to make sure that whatever work is done there is reflective of community involvement. These contracts were aimed to give a bit [of a] jumpstart to the communities, so I hope the contractors will pay attention to that,” the Minister said.

He added that people must feel the energy and understand that their government is working for them, and that the contractors must provide good work for the communities.

Minister Harmon also said that there must be a change in the perception that contractors are all about putting money in their pockets.

Chairman of the Lancaster/Hogstye Neighbourhood Democratic Council, Mr. Forbes Moore, said the planned works are a great help to the community. He noted, however, that there were some other needs communicated to him, including the establishment of a farmers’ market, better drainage and irrigation, and better garbage collection.

“We want this community to look like cleaner parts of Berbice, and we are working assiduously to do that,” he said.

Ms. Rajkumarie Nandan, a resident of Lancaster Middle Walk Dam, said that with the new road, children would have an easier time getting transportation to school.

“Right now it is very hard for buses to come in, and it is very hard in the morning for children to get out. We either have to take children out to the road and clean their shoes, or put it on at the head of the road,” she said.

FIRST Lady Mrs. Sandra Granger paid a visit to the men’s dormitory of The Palms Geriatric Home on Friday to follow-up on a wellness initiative she started last month, and ended up overseeing a “spa” day for residents there.

The Ministry of the Presidency said the exercise was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Protection, the Women Across Differences (WAD) group, and Pastor Sean Sobers of the Destiny Empowerment Worship Centre. The men were given haircuts by a group from the church, as part of its outreach programme, and were preparing for a special “spa” session of manicures and pedicures from the girls attached to the WAD group when the Ministry of the Presidency visited the facility.

Mrs. Granger also presented each of the male residents from the four dormitories with a pair of pyjamas, even as she commended the young women of the WAD group for a job well done and expressed gratitude for the church’s participation, noting that the gesture was appreciated by the men and the care-givers at the facility.

The residents and First Lady interacted warmly with each other. Some thanked her for taking the time to visit them again, while others thanked her for their gift; and yet others expressed their appreciation for her service.

Mr. Robert John, a resident of Ward Four, charmed all the visitors with his singing, particularly when he serenaded the First Lady with a melodious rendition of “God be with you till we meet again.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Whentworth Tanner, Director of Social Services at the Ministry of Social Protection, said the Ministry was pleased to partner with the Office of the First Lady on this initiative, as it is in keeping with the Ministry’s overall plan to enhance the services offered at the retirement home.

“The aim is to make sure that persons are comfortable,” he said.

- Gaskin lauds Berbice Chamber for embracing diversification MINISTER of Business, Dominic Gaskin, has commended Berbice businessmen for looking at diversification in a positive light, calling it a step in the right direction.

“I am glad to see that this year, you’re promoting entrepreneurship through a diversified economy, because this is precisely what we need to be doing in Guyana,” he said.

“We want to see more entrepreneurs emerging onto the business landscape, and staking a claim on our economic space,” he told members of the Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and their guests two Fridays ago at the launch of the Berbice ‘Expo’ and Trade Fair, now in its 12th year, and a calendar event for the Ancient County.

He also commended the Chamber for staying the course for 12 long years, but most of all for getting exhibitors to commit to partnering with them, year after year.

Acknowledging how difficult coordinating such activities can be at times, Minister Gaskin said, “In addressing the challenges we face holding these ‘expos’, sometimes we have to compromise on the objectives of the ‘expo’, and we end up with a massive entertainment event.”

THE FIRST OUTING Giving a background to how it all started, President of the Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, Mohamed Raffik, said the organisation itself was founded in 2004, and that the first exposition was held just a year later, out of a recognition that Berbicans desperately needed

to showcase their products and services if they were to survive.

“The ‘expo’, over the years, has provided opportunities to the business community in Berbice to get together; have a venue to showcase their products; and also to companies operating in Georgetown to do business in Berbice,” Raffik said, adding: “Without these sponsorships, these ‘expos’ would not be possible. It’s challenging to generate profits, but with our expertise and corporate sponsorships, we were able to obtain profits.”

And, speaking of profits, Raffik said whatever the organisation makes from the ‘expo’ goes directly back to the development of Berbice and its residents, as is the Chamber’s ultimate goal.

CONCERNS As to some of the concerns facing the business community, Raffik called on his colleagues to dig deep and come up with some innovative ideas; to look at diversifying outside of the traditional industries as a possible way out, lest the County falls prey to mass migration.

Said he: “We have noticed, over the past year, that business has slowed down; and we recognise there are many reasons for that, one being the economic situation worldwide.

“When we mention Berbice, it’s about rice and sugar; and with these two stalwarts down, we have to find more ways and means of creating more economic opportunities in Berbice...

“If people cannot find employment in Berbice,

they will migrate to other places. We have to find opportunities and avenues to keep people in Berbice.”

COST FACTOR As Assistant Treasurer and Expo Coordinator, Tejpaul Adjodhea explained, the cost to rent a booth is the same as in previous years, which is $50,000, which, to his way of thinking, is a small investment for the unlimited business potential the event affords one, given the fact that it just keeps getting bigger and bigger with each passing year.

The Berbice ‘Expo’ is expected this year to attract quite a number of Guyanese exhibitors showcasing mainly local products and services, especially those available in Berbice, and quite a few from overseas, especially from India, Brazil and Suriname.

The event, billed for August 19 to 22 at the Albion Sports Complex ground, will also feature a nightly concert, with live entertainment from top local artistes and bands, as well as a fireworks display.

The theme of this year’s exposition is, “Promoting entrepreneurship for a diversified economy.”

New tractor for New Amsterdam M&TC - to help with garbage collection

RESIDENTS of New Amsterdam, seat of administration of Region Six, can now look forward to improved garbage collection and disposal with the timely donation of a tractor-cumdump trailer from the Ministry of Communities.

The vehicle was handed over to New Amsterdam Mayor Kirt Wynter by subject Minister Ronald Bulkan two Wednesdays ago, while a simple ceremony was held last Tuesday to officially launch the “Drive For A Clean New Amsterdam”.

On receiving the vehicle, Wynter said it would be critical to the township’s garbage collection.

“This new piece of equipment will no doubt form the basis of our new sanitation collection initiative. This technology en-

ables us to place dumpsters at strategic points throughout the municipality, and implement scheduled pickups and dumps.”

He also used the occasion to urge those residents at the function to be conscious about solid waste management, in that one person’s actions impact everyone in

the town.

He also let them know that they are working to make the town a better place for everyone by making use of the subvention from the Ministry of Communities.

Wynter stated that, from the $16M subvention, it has been planned to purchase a dump truck to assist with the

disposal of solid waste, as the municipality moves from using dumpsites to landfill sites to better manage garbage.

He noted also that garbage bins would be placed at various points in the town, from Stanleytown right up to the New Amsterdam Hospital at Fort Canje.

Corentyne businessman gives back to his community - in late father’s memory

CORENTYNE businessman Zakir Ali has donated three bus sheds to the Number 52/74 Neighbourhood Democratic Council.

The sheds, located at Number 70 Village, are strategically placed at three dams, namely Number 69 Dam, Number 70 Middle Walk Dam and Number 70 Turn.

Ali, proprietor of Zakir Auto Sales, said the structures were built in memory of his late father, Sultan Akbar Ali. He explained that he had always had a passion for community development, and has, over the years, looked at various ways in which he could improve the lot of residents of not just his community, but neighbouring ones as well.

“I always look at ways to develop my community and country,” the businessman said, adding: “I would like to call on others to help your community to do development; in your area, streets, roads, hospital… This way, we can have a better community, and our country will be a better place…

“If we can do it, do it; we shouldn’t only look at the Government and NDC.” Ali said he plans to have several more bus sheds built.

Those would be situated from Number 71 Village all the way to Skeldon.

Besides the three sheds at Number 70 and the one at the Number 74 Burial Ground, Ali has also built two mosques, one each at the Number 77 and 76 Housing Schemes.

And plans are also afoot to set up a skills training centre at the mosques, so that school dropouts, single parents and the less fortunate can learn a trade.

Prime Minister’s Representative for Region Six, Gobin Harbajan, commended Ali for erecting bus sheds in the various communities, and called the action a welcome gesture, since the sheds not only beautify those communities but also afford residents shelter as they await transportation.

PRESIDENT David Granger says Guyana’s eco-tourism potential can make the country a global player in the international tourism market and he called for more investments in the sector, including by the business community here.

Speaking at the annual President’s Awards Dinner and Auction hosted by the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) at the Guyana Marriott Hotel in Kingston on Friday evening , the Head of State told a gathering of tourism advocates , operators and government officials among others that Guyana is part of the new frontier of tourism , one which sees the sunand-sand tourism product giving way to adventure ,eco and wildlife tourism

among other new forms.

“Eco-tourism has the greatest potential, it is probably the one product that will make our country an global player in the international tourism market”, he said.

He said that it has the capacity to become the most transformative sub-sector of the country’s economy.

“Our country’s competitive capacity lies with eco-tourism and we must exploit this competitive advantage,” he said.

He said that the government aims to ensure that the eco- tourism sector will be developed most vividly and methodically. He said that protection of the environment is an essential pillar of the country’s green economy mandate. As he continued, the Head of State noted that tourism cannot be developed without improvement and

investment such as in infrastructure and technology.

He identified transportation as key to the development of the sector, noting that most of the tourism destinations in Guyana are in the hinterland and high transportation costs impact the advancement of the sector. He said the government will invest in improving the scenario, but he noted too that investments by the private sector is needed to open attraction. “We will as a government aggressively court investments in the eco- tourism sector,” the President noted Tourism is an essential element in the world economy, the Head of State noted, as he informed that the sector accounts for one in very 11 jobs in the global economy. “We cannot toy with tourism,” he said.

Nagamotoo invites U.S. Indians to invest in Guyana

SUNDAY CHRONICLE June 26, 2016 PRIME Minister Moses Nagamootoo Friday evening sought to cajole business leaders and investors of the Indian diaspora, especially those in the United States, to invest in Guyana. “…there are ample opportunities for the American-Indian diaspora in renewable energy supply (solar, wind, hydro etc.),” Nagamootoo told those attending the Global Convention of the Global Organisation of Peoples of Indian Origin (GOPIO) in New York.

“There are unbridled opPrime Minister portunities for large-scale Moses Nagamootoo agricultural projects, agro-processing and aquaculture on extensive arable lands, development of which has been restricted for centuries to sugar cultivation,” he stated.

In pitching Guyana, he noted that Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America with 215,000 sq. km, the same size as the United Kingdom and 20 times the size of Jamaica; rich in natural resources such as forests, gold, bauxite, gas and oil; politically and economically stable with positive growth rates over the past decade; governed by a six-party, multi-ethnic, coalition Government that has an Open Door policy towards business, etc..

In addition, he stated that 85% of the land space of Guyana is virgin rainforest.

“We aim to develop 100% renewable power supply by the year 2025 under our policy to promote both a clean and green economy,” the Prime Minister stated.

It was with these facts in mind that he invited new investors to Guyana.

“With anticipated alternative energy, Guyana can become a safe haven for ICT and light manufacturing to take advantage of duty-free access to U.S. markets under agreements such as the Caribbean Basin Initiative.

“So, as Prime Minister, I assure you a role in credible investment and business in Guyana.

“We are relatives. Now, we must become partners,” Nagamootoo stated.

He said that though Guyana and India are defined by distinct and different nationalities, almost one-half of the population of Guyana shares ethnic-cultural and ancestral relationships with India.

“We share a common political history of rule by the British. After slavery ended, the British recruited mainly Chinese, Portuguese and Indians to supplement freed African labourers on the sugar estates,” he noted.

Nagamootoo said he traced his own ancestry to South Indian, indentured immigrants who arrived in 1847 in the then British colony and who were bonded to the sugar plantations on the Guiana coastland.

Nagamootoo noted that his ancestors and many other immigrants chose not to return to India and accepted Guiana as their new homeland.

“Though he was born in 1947, the year of India’s independence, like so many other Guyanese I value dearly and cherish my ancestral roots and ethnic-cultural bonds with all Indian citizens and nationals.

“This is why I consider being here amongst you, a privilege and an honour,” he told the GOPIO Convention.

The Prime Minister noted that Guyana and India enjoy special relations.

“India inspired our own independence struggle. India is present in almost all facets of Guyanese life. Indian specialists are helping to modernise and transform our sugar, rice and other agricultural sectors; Indian doctors and medical technicians serve in several of our hospitals; Indian foods, music, art, rituals and even yoga form part of the cultural life of Guyana.

“Besides, India helps to train many of our technicians and media workers under the ITEC programme,” he stated.

Region 10 officials want bitumen plant back in Linden OFFICIALS of Region 10 are calling on the Ministry of Public Infrastructure to return the portable bitumen plant to Linden so the region can carry out needed road repairs and construction.

The plea was made by Regional Chairman Renis Morian who posited that the region had benefited tremendously from the outputs of the bitumen plant that was loaned to it last year.

“We need your (Minister of Public Infrastruture) support again with the Bitumen Plant in Region 10. “…we are not doing chipsy but bituminous surface roads in Region 10,” he stated.

With the availability of the plant, the bitumen produced will not only be used for the construction of community inroads, but for roads leading to the Kwakwani, Ituni and other interior locations.

The presence of a bitumen plant is nothing new in Linden as the bitumen used to construct the Soesdyke-Linden Highway was produced right in Mackenzie. During this period, the town benefited tremendously as it aided in the development of the region and the provision of jobs.

Residents are anxiously awaiting the construction of community roads which have deteriorated further as a result of the recent rains.

Some of these are the Main Street in Amelia’s Ward, the Teachers Hostel access street, the Self Help Scheme access road, Block 22 access roads and the Fair’s Rust access Road.

“We begged, we pleaded, we tried self-help, but it is beyond us,” the residents of Main street Amelia’s Ward, Linden, stated.

“We need help, for years we are begging,” a resident stated.

Regional Chairman Renis Morian said $55 million was allocated in the last budget for roads and advertisements for tenders have been put out.

Some of the communities which will benefit from road repairs are Blue Berry Hill, Self-Help Amelia’s Ward, Rainbow City, Kara Kara, Canvas City, New Silver City and Wisroc.

Five–year strategy to enable sustainable, integrated development of Region Nine communities A five- year action plan to transform agricultural production in Region Nine would see optimisation of the Intermediate Savannahs with focus on aquaculture, livestock development, crops, and small ruminants.

Government has previously stated its intention to push agricultural development in the hinterland and intends to open up 4,000 acres of land as part of the plan to develop Region Nine.

INTEREST AWAY FROM THE COAST Most of Guyana’s agricultural produce are cultivated on the coastland. Its coast is below sea level, and bouts of flooding are experienced during the rainy season. Mindful of this, government is implementing strategies to introduce large scale agriculture into the intermediate and Rupununi savannahs, utilising eco-friendly and cost-effective methods.

Minister of Agriculture Noel Holder speaking to the Government Information Agency (GINA) said that the world is moving away from clearing of forests which are widely known as the lungs of the earth. Hence, feasibility studies to look at proper land use, available water resources and other factors would have to be undertaken. The Minister explained that the objective is to reduce the hinterland’s dependency for

agricultural produce from the coast.

“The hinterland communities which are very fertile but are inaccessible, the new development plans see to what extent those communities could become totally self-sufficient so the need to supply food, fly in food supplies at tremendous cost is eliminated,” Minister Holder explained.

AGRICULTURAL POTENTIAL A partnership has been formed with the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the Ministry of Agriculture to support the region towards realising its agricultural potential.

Chairman of Region Nine, Brian Allicock, told GINA that CARDI’s initial focus was on spices such as black pepper, ginger, and turmeric. However they have recently expressed an interest in establishing a coconut plantation. Such a development, Allicock stated will tremendously benefit the residents.

“We are trying to expand, open them to the larger farm so that some of them would take it up and go with it, they would benefit because you know, if you establish a plantation in a village structure, the entire village would benefit,” the chairman explained.

Exploring the possibilities of aquaculture is another aspect of the developmental plan for the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo region. During the sunny periods, the rivers usually dry up causing many of the fish to remove from their locations or die. Hence, having aqua farms will serve as a food source. The region will be receiving support from the fisheries department of the Ministry of Agriculture in this regard.

“We are trying to educate people, we could do our own rearing of fish in aquaculture so now we have to think about equipment to do that and of course the Ministry of Agriculture, they are very willing to assist,” Allicock said.

LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT The Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) is currently working at the Ebini experimental station to breed farm animals that would thrive in the savannahs.

Head of GLDA, Nigel Cumberbatch said that sheep, goats and cattle are the main type of livestock being looked at in Ebini. In terms of cattle, the pure breed Zebu, the Beef Master, the Brangus and the Simmental are being experimented on.

As it relates to sheep, Cumberbatch stated, “we concentrate wholly and solely on the Barbados black belly breed… and we really don’t allow any other of the breeds held at that station because we feel that it should be kept as the national repository of the Barbados black belly breed of sheep.”

OBJECTIVES OF THE STRATEGY The five-year strategy is expected to improve food and nutrition security, reduce poverty and enable sustainable and integrated development of local communities in Region Nine.

The strategy outcomes include; improved food and nutrition security, reduced poverty, and enabling sustainable and integrated development of local communities, improved public and private sector linkages; promotion of a more business-like approach to agriculture; and enhanced food systems production, diversification, efficiency and profitability. Wales into last eight after Gareth McAuley own goal WALES’ amazing run at Euro 2016 continued as an own goal from Northern Ireland’s Gareth McAuley took them through to the quarter-finals courtesy of a 1-0 win in Paris.

The first half was almost totally devoid of quality in

the second all-British affair of the tournament, with Welsh talisman Gareth Bale struggling to make much of an impact on proceedings.

Sargeant’s helmet-trick sees Pitbulls to 4-3 win against Saints MARK Sargeant was the hero for Pitbulls on Friday evening when the Guyana Hockey Board’s Lucozade Indoor tournament continued at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

Sargeant scored all four of the Pitbulls’ goals to see his team squeeze past Saints.

Saints were not without their chances as they went ahead by 2-1 in the 21st minute with goals from Kevin Edwards and Ato Green.

Sargeant would level the score for Pitbulls in the 32nd minute with his second penalty corner goal of the match, but junior national Hilton Chester nudged Saints ahead once more in the 35th minute. Sargeant would have the final word as he rounded out his four-goal haul in the dying minutes, all from accurately placed penalty corner shots.

Saints pressured the Pitbulls to the end, but squandered several close chances and would come up just shy of matching their opposition on the evening.

From the “get go,” the Kwakwani side looked to be the more hungry as they continually raided the opposition camp with a variety of ranged shots from as far as 35 yards out.

One Campbell shot skewed its way past the keeper, but flew inches above the cross bar leaving the Kwakwani fans and players slightly heartbroken.

However, Keith would make no mistake in the 14th minute when a cross-in from the right side found him unmarked, which he successfully nailed past the keeper for the first goal of the game.

The half would go on to see further raids by the Kwakwani team, even as the rain began to pour. The scarce Linden side’s attempts skewed wide and were not much of a threat to the Kwakwani keeper as the half ended in the favour of the home side.

The second half resumed as the showers eased and again Kwakwani had taken to attacking, the Linden side having no option but to play defensively, considering the fact that they were behind the proverbial eighth ball.

They could not however find an answer for substitute Cassius, who collected a cross inside the eight-yard box before successfully finishing for his side’s second goal in the 75th.

Further tries by the Kwakwani side to get a third proved futile, as time ran out, but there were celebrations long into the night in the little community of Linden.

Portugal substitute Quaresma snatches extra-time winner

By Philip O’Connor LENS, France,(REUTERS)-A close-range header from Portugal substitute Ricardo Quaresma secured a 1-0 win over Croatia after the game burst into life late in extra time yesterday and set up a Euro 2016 quarter-final against Poland this week.

Quaresma struck three minutes from the end of the

extra period after a Cristiano Ronaldo shot was brilliantly saved by Danijel Subasic to settle the tie just a minute after Croatia’s Ivan Perisic had hit the post with a header.

Croatia almost snatched an equaliser at the death but Domagoj Vida hooked the ball agonisingly wide.

“We expected Portugal to counter and we were

playing really well for 120 minutes, controlling the match, not conceding any chances except the last one that was our mistake and we were punished for that,” said Croatia coach Ante Cacic.

There was some lovely one-touch play from both sides but plenty of passes also went astray in a tense, cagey last 16 game in which neither side man-

aged to register a shot on target until Ronaldo’s late effort led to the winning goal.

Croatia were on top for most of the first half but Portugal had the first chance when Pepe headed Raphael Guerreiro’s free kick over the bar after Ronaldo was tripped by Perisic.

Perisic, who had a patch of his hair dyed to match the red-and-white checked pattern of his shirt, then cut in from the right but he dragged his shot outside the near post.

NYSCL stages 12th softball championships

GFSCA Masters set to defend title in Independence Cup

By Frederick Halley DEFENDING Legends Cup champions Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) Masters are among five teams from Guyana vying for supremacy when the New York Softball Cricket League (NYSCL) stages its 12 th annual Independence and Legends Cup tournaments from July 1-3.

Among the venues to be used for the Independence Cup are 150 & Rockaway and Roy Wilkins Park, Queens, New York and Canarsie Park in Brooklyn. Roy Wilkins will host both finals on Sunday, July 3.

The USA Independence weekend tournaments feature teams from the hosts, Guyana, Canada and Florida.

The GFSCA will also field another side, GFSCA Legends, in what is expected to once again be a highly

competitive Legends Cup with Regal Masters being the other Guyanese team among the mix.

The Independence Cup will see Regal All Stars and Wolf Warriors All Stars in the race for championship honours.

In last year’s two finals, Mercenaries got past NYSCL All Stars, while GFSCA defeated GSCL in a close encounter with Berbician Gordial Mattai playing a decisive role with the bat.

However, Mercenaries are not down to defend their title this year, since most of the players will be donning colours for Regal All Stars instead.

According to the organisers, all systems are in place for successful staging of the tournament with 10 teams slated to participate in the Independence Cup and 14 in the Legends Cup. The Independence Cup

will be played in two groups, while the Legends Cup comprises three. The latter is however subject to change in

THE Guyana Amazon Warriors were robbed of some vital match practice yesterday when the second warm-up game was abandoned without a ball being bowled at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

Heavy rainfall throughout the day meant that the players were forced to pass time indoors, as they also could not utilise the practice area.

The game was due to begin at 12:00 hrs, but was called off minutes after the scheduled start, limiting the Amazon Warriors to just one practice match ahead of their first Hero Carib-

In the first warmup game, the Warriors defeated the Guyana Select X1 by 49 runs on Friday night.

Batting first under lights, the Warriors made 170-7 from their allotment of overs. Left-handed batsmen Assad Fudadin led the way with 48, while Jason Mohammed made a composed 36.

Jeffrey, Cornelius, Fernandes are GCF’s Individual time trial champions R AY N A U T H J e f f r e y, Christopher Cornelius and Stephen Fernandes were declared winners of their respective categories when the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) staged its national Individual Time Trials championships yesterday around the Mahaicony circuit, East Coast Demerara.

Jeffrey, who campaigns in the United States of America returned 24 minutes .01 seconds to win the Elite (seniors)11-mile time trial, while Cornelius and Fernandes won the junior and veterans’ categories respectively.

Cornelius recorded 13 minutes, 44.31 seconds to win the junior category, which was a 5.5-mile race against time and Fernandes returned 13 minutes, 42.75 seconds to win the veterans’ category over the same distance.

The event which started adjacent to the Mahaicony Community Centre at 08:00hrs, saw the junior

and veterans’ contesting one lap (5.5 miles) around the circuit and the Elite (seniors) racing against time for two laps or 11 miles.

Marlon “Fishy” Williams was second in the Elite category after posting a time of 25 minutes .05 seconds.

Jamal John who is back home from the US where he campaigns, returned 25 minutes 16 seconds to clinch third ahead of another US-based Guyanese, Geron Williams, who clocked 25 minutes 32 seconds for fourth place.

Andrew Hicks was second among the juniors with a time of 13 minutes 46.85 seconds, while Deeraj Garbarran returned 14 minutes 10.50 seconds for third place.

In the veterans’ category, Raymond Newton placed second with a time of 13 minutes 46.72 seconds and Junior Niles finished third with a time of 13 minutes 49 seconds.

2015 champion failed to show up to defend his title and some GCF officials said

Last year, Eastman registered seven minutes 42.36 seconds in winning the

four-mile time trial which was staged from Montrose, East Coast Demerara and concluded at Bel Air. Michael Anthony was second and Orville Hinds third.

Last year also, Eastman won the national road race title with a time of three hours, 40 minutes 37.67 seconds.

Geron Williams, who won the road race title in 2014, placed third to Eastman last year while Alonzo Greaves finished second.

Meanwhile, the GCF will stage its national road race championships today and in the absence of Eastman, a new Road Race champion will be crowned.

The event gets underway from 11:00hrs from the entrance leading to the Guyana Defence Force’s playfield on Irving Street, opposite Barr Street, Kitty and will see the competitors battling for 30 laps around the outer circuit of the National Park before finishing at the place of origin.

The `Fun Run’ caters for persons 10 years and older and will commence on Thomas Lands, proceed North on Camp Street, East along Carifesta Avenue and the Rupert Craig Highway, to turn in the Access Road, Lillendaal.

The course then continues West via Kitty Public Road, South into Vlissengen Road, then West into Thomas Road to finish at the point of origin.

There will also be a 10K team run which starts at 06:30hrs outside the YMCA and will follow the same course as the `Fun Run’.

A team must consist of four males and two females, all of whom must complete the course in order to gain points.

Monetary prizes and trophies will be awarded for the Team Run. The team finishing first will receive $72,000, while the second and third place teams will earn $48,000 and $32,000 respectively.

T&T crowned Regional Under19 T20 champs

...Guyana beat Barbados for bronze medal (By Brij Parasnath in Trinidad & Tobago) TRINIDAD and Tobago youthful female cricketers were crowned Regional Under 19 champs when they defeated Windward Islands by 27 runs in the final of the Trinidad and Tobago Women Cricket Association (TTWCA) Invitational Under tournament contested at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain, Couva yesterday.

With their comfortable victory in the T20 final, the Trinidadian players also maintained their unbeaten record for this year’s series that involved three round-robin matches plus the semi-final encounter against Guyana on Friday.

Simultaneously, Guyana clinched the third place and celebrated their triumph over dethroned champs Barbados in their third-place play-off encounter at Gilbert Park, California, Couva yesterday.

Trinidad and Tobago batted first and amassed 101 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs after they had suffered early setbacks with the dismissal of two quick wickets with only 7 runs on the board.

Skipper Reniece Boyce was caught by Akita Alexander off Alyah Alfred for two runs (9balls) while fellow opener Shania Abdool was dismissed on the same total, caught by Kimone Homer off Qiana Joseph for three runs.

All-rounder Leandra Ramdeen joined Renna Farrow and together they stabilise the innings with a 26-run third wicket stand before Farrow departed for five.

Vice-captain Kamara Ragoobar eventually emerged as topscorer with a fighting unbeaten 36 that included one four off 38 balls. Together with Ramdeen, who made 28; shared an invaluable 46run fourth wicket partnership that helped propelled Trinidad and Tobago to 101 for 4 off their allotted 20 overs.

Joseph (1-13), Alfred (1-22), Taylor Dickson (1-22) and Holly Charles (1-15) shared the wickets.

In reply, Trinidad and Tobago’s spinners Reana Farrow (4-1-17-3), Leandra Ramdeen (4-2-8-2), Kamara Ragoobar (4-0-10-1) and Renelle Dookie (3-0-9-1) combined to restrict Windwards to 78 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs and allowed the “Calypso Girls” to celebrate title victory by twenty seven runs.

All-rounder Ragoobar who topscored with an unbeaten 36 and claimed one wicket for ten runs in her four-over spell was easily voted “Player of the Match”.

For the plucky Windwards team, Nerissa Crafton and Jephenia Joseph were the only players to reach double figures and finished on 21 and 15 respectively.

Guyana’s Mandy Mangru swung the bronze-medal game with her clever bowling as she snapped three wickets when Barbados had threatened to do serious damage and post a triple-figure mark.

West Indies T20 star opener Hayley Matthews were in her elements and dominating the proceedings as she featured in an enterprising 45-run (9.1 overs) first wicket partnership before her opposite number Mangru had her stumped by wicketkeeper Deborah Vanderstoop for 21 (2x4s off 33 balls).

The Guyana captain made further inroads and bowled Haneisha Hoyte for three and had Alisa Scantlebury LBW for two while Sheneta Grimmond bowled opener Aaliyeh Alleyne (9) and Shai Carrington for one. Barbados were reduced to 55 for 5 and were in all sorts of trouble as the closed their innings at 61 for 9 in 20 overs.

Mangru (4-1-9-3) was named “Player of Match” and was well supported by Grimmond (4-0-92), Plaffiana Millington (4-1-6-2) and Kaysia Shultz (4-1-16-1) as they claimed nine Barbadian wickets for an addition of 16 runs in 10.1 overs.

Guyana raced to a seven-wicket victory with 25 balls remaining. They reached 62 for 3 in 15.5 overs with solid contributions from Grimmond (14) and Shabika Gajnabi who was undefeated on 26 that included two fours off 27 balls.

Team Guyana ready for CBC Championships

By Daniel Haynes “WE are ready as a team,” were the words of a confident Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) president Nigel Hinds yesterday at the Giftland Mall.

Hinds was speaking at the male and female Guyana Junior U-16 Caribbean Basketball Confederation(CBC) Championships launch with the coaches Lugard Mohan and Ann Gordon.

Present at the launch was Director of Sport Christopher Jones and Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) coordinator Chris Bowman. Also in attendance were Ministry of Education Head of Department of Physical Education Nicholas Fraser and the local organising committee members.

Hinds is optimistic ahead of the games and spoke to members about the increased support of youth development by the Government of Guyana.

“Times have changed and within this new climate, we are fresh off of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, and the hosting of the CBC games is a great step for

Hinds also stated that the renovation done at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall was not just for the basketball fraternity, but for other disciplines also.

Also commenting was Christopher Jones, who stated that the Sports Hall was now of a standard that could host any regional or international games.

“We at the National Sports Commission are committed to

providing sporting facilities not just in Georgetown, but across Guyana.”

Jones then congratulated Hinds on winning the bid for the CBC championships before adding that as a result, Guyana has not created history once but twice with the CBC hosting and the recently completed Aliann Pompey International Invitational.

Nicholas Fraser was of the opinion that having the games come to Guyana was a huge

plus since students would be able to write the sport of basketball for Physical Education at CXC. “We see students who don’t have actual exposure to basketball who just know the sport in examination settings and having them exposed to how the game should be played increases the success rate for CXC passes.”

Also chiming in was Bowman and coach Ann Gordon, who both spoke

about the level of preparedness going into the competition being different than the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) preparation.

According to Bowman, “With this tournament we are geared towards progression where, with the IGG teams we had prepared them to win. It was a one-shot and they were that good.”

He added that the federation spared no expense in getting the players prepared and

alluded to the fact that at the IGG level this had not been done before.

The CBC games begin on Sunday July 3 with four games. At 13:00hrs Antigua & Barbuda will take on The Bahamas, and Barbados will come up against the British Virgin Islands at 15:15hrs.

Group B will see Jamaica taking on Suriname at 17:30hrs and host Guyana wrapping up against Aruba at 20:30hrs.

Rain forces postponement of football trials HEAVY rains that left the Camp Ayangana ground under water yesterday, brought a halt to the football trials to select the national U-17 team.

The Technical staff was forced to call off the trials midway through the opening day of the two- day trials that would have concluded today.

The young footballers, from eight member FAs of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), are expected to be back on the pitch next weekend to test their skills in quest of making the final 18 to travel to the US Virgin Islands for the Caribbean Football Union’s (CFU) Boys U-17 Group competition.

At the end of the, trials which involve some 66 players, a squad of 26 will be selected for a ten- day encampment at the end of which the tour party will be announced. The team will depart Guyana on July 13th for the USVI where they will play their opening match against Jamaica two days later . The second game will be against the home team on the 17th and the final group 4 match for the Guyanese will be against Antigua and Barbuda on the 19th. (Ras Wadada).

The two sides meet again at the said venue after last Sunday’s finale resulted in victory, via a penalty shootout, for Alpha to capture the second phase of the 2-tier Tournament. It was a reverse of the first phase final which was won by Slingerz last year November, hence they

now clash in the final showdown to determine Guyana’s top football club.

T h e We s t D e m e r ara-based unit displayed their superiority in both phases of the two rounds of matches in the 8-team competition that each culminated with two semifinals and a final involving the top four finishers. In fact, the loss in the 2nd Phase final to Alpha was the first defeat, on the pitch, for Slingerz in the history of the inaugural Elite teams’ competition.

The win by the Wayne Dover coached side to force a decisive game, now being labelled as the ‘Champion of Champions’, has boosted the confidence of the Alpha side going into tonight’s encounter.

The Joseph ‘Bill’ Wilson coached Slingerz team is undaunted and eagerly looking forward to the meeting with one thing on their minds – revenge.

There will be no monetary reward for this one, only the Title of club supremacy in Guyana’s football. Both coaches have assured that fans will be in for another intense game but sounded doubtful about another penalty shoot-out.

The action will kick-off at 18:00 hrs with a feature match between Western Tigers and Den Amstel FC.

Darren Bravo struck a match-winning century against the Proteas on Friday night.

FEW at the start of the Tri Nation series would have predicted the West Indies would reach the finals, but that’s just what happened as the hosts booked a place for today’s finale at Kensington Oval , beating South Africa by 100 runs on Friday night.

Darren Bravo was the star of the show for West Indies, scoring a match winning 102 runs off 103 balls to help his side post a challenging 285-run total.

Kieron Pollard gave him company with a fluent 62-run knock, with the pair putting on 156 runs for the fifth wicket after finding themselves at 21/4 as early as the fifth over.

Shannon Gabriel playing in only his second ODI, showed why he is rated so highly with his pace causing problems for the Proteas. He eventually finished with figures of 3/17 to help bowl out South Africa for a meagre 185 runs.

The team management will be concerned

by an injury picked up by Gabriel, who at present is set to play in the final. Other than that, the West Indies will go into the final with a full strength squad at their disposal.

World champions Australia, come into this game on the back of some impressive performances with both bat and ball . Their top-order have chipped in with useful contributions at various times, while skipper Steven Smith will be most pleased with Glenn Maxwell’s return to form after smashing 46 runs off 22 balls against West Indies on 21 June.

The Men from Down Under have chopped and changed their bowling line-up throughout the series, considering this is the final they would look to recall spinner Adam Zampa in place of Scott Boland. The conditions favour the quick bowlers, but Zampa has been impressive in the limited opportunities he has got.
