When ‘The Greatest of All Time’ visited Guyana

T

he world was shocked as news broke late on Friday that legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, “The Greatest of All Time”, had died. In picture, Ali is garlanded by a woman on arrival at the Albion Ground in April, 1979. As a tribute, the Guyana Chronicle features in words and pictures (see Page 9) the fever that gripped Guyana at the time of his visit. Ali died of septic shock after several days in the hospital with a severe respiratory illness. His funeral will be held on Friday in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, the family said, and will be preceded by a public procession. Former president Bill Clinton, Billy Crystan and Bryant Gumbel will deliver eulogies
