President pledges to continue changing Guyana for the better – to lay the foundation for greater success

By Vanessa Narine STRENGTH garnered from the support of the Guyanese masses is strength enough for the ruling People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), according to its presidential candidate and incumbent Head of State, Donald Ramotar.

“The People’s Progressive Party is strong enough to fight its own political battles,” he said, delivering a jab at the political opposition, whose majority partner is the People’s National Congress (PNC), which has a history of subverting the professionalism of the Armed Forces to sustain its regime via rigged elections.

His message to thousands gathered in support for the PPP/C at its most recent rally held at Stewartville was well received, as evidenced by thunderous cheers, applause and the occasional whistle.

Mr Ramotar underscored that as Commander-in-Chief, he has never given illegal instruction to the Disciplined Forces, and never asked them to undertake work of a political nature.

“The PPP has always acted in the interest of the people of this country; our record will show that we are the only genuine friends of the Armed Forces, and we are recommitting ourselves to building the Armed Forces to be professional people with the highest level of professionalism in our country,” he stressed.

President Ramotar noted that with 14 days to go and less than a week before the Disciplined Forces cast their vote, the ruling party remains committed to the development of Guyana, and improvement in the quality of life for the Guyanese people.

presidential candidate assured its supporters and the nation on the whole.

He pointed to the PPP/C’s vision for the future, Guyana 2.0, which was launched on Saturday, and represents his party’s “pact with the Guyanese people” and outlines in detail the specifics of the party’s plans for the next five years.

“Our Manifesto not only describes our vision, but outlines in detail how we will make this a reality,” Mr Ramotar said.

According to him, growth, job creation, generation of wealth, the boosting of the manufacturing and tourism, among sectors, a focus on food and energy security, as well as a liberalized telecoms sector are plans that will be bolstered by several transformational infrastructural

projects.

Among those listed are the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project, the expansion of the

Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), bridges across the Corentyne and Demerara Rivers, a deep-wa-

ter harbour at the mouth of the Berbice River and the rehabilitation of the West Demerara Road.

“We will lay the foundations for greater success,” he pledged, adding that the PPP/C will work tirelessly to realise the vision detailed in Guyana 2.0.

Mr Ramotar added that interventions in the sugar and rice sectors, major pillars of the economy, will also continue to receive support from his administration.

He underscored the success Guyana has had in being able to secure bilateral and multilateral agreements with development partners, in particular the recent support agreed on in India during his meetings with Prime Minister Navendra Modi.

The President stated that to move forward, there must be a “futuristic” focus to be able to capitalise on opportunities, and set the platform for greater advances.

On that note, he bemoaned the fact that the political opposition, A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC), has not worked with the current administration to advance development, but has adopted the politics

of ‘No!’ This disposition, Mr Ramotar said, is now flipped for the purpose of electioneering, in that the political opposition is now promising hydropower, support for sugar and even the passage of the Anti-Money Laundering and the Countering of the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Bill, all issues on which they were initially unsupportive.

“That is their record! We must not allow our gains to be threatened; we must not only protect gains, but our pride and dignity; some of the things we have given our people has no price tag…

Freedom of speech, among the things we brought back to our people,” he said.

The PPP/C presidential candidate also underscored the fact that there is much at stake come May 11 at the General and Regional elections.

“This election is important; this election, we must register the biggest ever victory of the PPP,” President Ramotar declared, reiterating his appeal for the Guyanese people to stand with his party and stand with him and the PPP/C has stood with them throughout the years.

Rohee readies Stewartville for action --‘We will fight this battle with the ballot’

Energised no doubt by the sheer numbers before him, he said: “Rallies are important; and we are grateful for your support, but tomorrow, we must hit the ground running.

And every single one of you must go out and transform this energy into the energy that will lead us on May 11 to victory.”

Noting that the task at hand can only be won by “ballots in hand”, he asked: “Are we ready for battle?” The mass cheering which ensued was answer enough, but he couldn’t help taking a dig at the Opposition.

“We don’t need soldiers to surround Donald Ramotar, or ex-police to surround Elisabeth Harper,” he said. “And we will fight this battle with the ballot.”

Assuring the thousands at yesterday’s rally that the PPP/C remains committed to moving the country forward, as detailed in Guyana 2.0, the party’s vision for the next five years, Rohee said: “I want to say to each and every one of you, we in the PPP are committed to moving this country forward.” He also used the opportunity to take a jab at the political Opposition, pointing out that theirs “is a plan about a plan.”

“How can they think about taking this country forward?

We have a plan we intend to implement,” he taunted.

By the end of his address, he called out to the packed to capacity. “We want all to be involved.” The response was loud cheering.

DISGUISED Turning his attention to the political Opposition, A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC), which he reminded his audience is really the People’s National Congress (PNC) in disguise, Rohee compared the latter’s track record while in office to that of successive PPP/C administrations, particularly where the strengthening of democracy is concerned. “We did the rebuilding,” Rohee said, adding: “Let us make no mistake in this struggle for the future of Guyana. They say it is time. But time for what? We say it is time to continue rebuilding this country; time for continued progress.”

He also urged PPP/C supporters to be on the alert for any attempt to upset the democratic gains of the country.

“Let us go forward on Election Day to ensure that it is a peaceful elections, and our supporters are the standard bearers of democracy and free and fair elections,” he said.

Harper tells Stewartville Rally...

Put your confidence in the PPP/C --if you want continued progress in this country

By Rebecca Ganesh “I ASK you to place your confidence in the PPP/C for continued progress in this country,” was People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Prime Ministerial Candidate, Mrs Elisabeth Harper’s humble appeal to the thousands of party supporters gathered at the Stewartville Sideline Dam yesterday.

She began by speaking at length of some of her recent visits to several communities across Guyana, and being fascinated by what the people there had to say. “I heard their stories and their dreams for their country and their children,” she said, adding that she was particularly struck by the children and their achievements, and their expectations for the future.

RIGHT CHOICE As to her future as an aspiring politician, she said, “The duty of leadership is not to be taken lightly.”

It is this sobering thought, she said, that has deepened her conviction even more that the PPP/C is where she belongs. “I know I have made the right choice in joining the PPP/C, a party that has interest in all, and with a track record that shows that it has the leadership and a vision,” she said.

She spoke to residents on the current crime situation in Region 3, explaining that the Government is on top of it, and has been working, and will continue to work, with the Police Force to help its members to better execute their duties.

She also commended the community leaders of Region 3, and encouraged them to work with the young people.

Harper spoke with confidence about the achievements that were made a reality under the PPP/C Government. “In your com-

munity, you have more services in education, health and job opportunities,” she said. “You are now able to build your own homes with the help of the Housing Ministry; the agricultural sector improves even further under this Government.”

Speaking specifically to those young people who will be voting for the first time, she said: “I want you to listen very carefully: Soon you might be standing on this stage and putting forward a vision... I encourage you to work hard and help to build this blessed country…”

Having explained to the audience that on Saturday last, the PPP/C launched their 2015 Manifesto, Mrs Harper spoke of its many aspects and benefits contained therein. “Food security,” she said, “is at the top of our agenda, as is increased production and the diversification of our other crops. We will also continue to partner with the Private Sector to create more investment projects and jobs creation.”

SPECIAL DEVELOPMENT FUND She noted that as enshrined in its Manifesto, the PPP/C Government will establish a special development fund that will encourage job and health creation activities. This, she said, is in addition to improvements in the education sector, which is a priority of this Government. She noted that with a better education system, the country will have enhanced job opportunities.

EMPOWERING WOMEN On the issue of empowering women, Harper said: “We will review all the laws that will encourage and promote women’s rights and equality. We must exercise zero tolerance on domestic violence.” She explained that domestic violence destroys who we are and ev-

erything we stand for and we as a community should not encourage it and “I encourage our men to participate in this fight also.”

“Single parents will be able to also further their education, training and day care services will be provided, child support will be mandatory by the court, ” Harper noted, citing some of the opportunities that will be available to single parents.

She further explained that the PPP/C Government has over the years upkept “the rights of women, our right in all aspects of the country, our right to an education more importantly.”

Harper further explained that teenage pregnancy is also a big problem and our manifesto will address these issues also. “If you had to leave school early, you have another chance to continue your education and provide for your family, opportunities will be available to support you.”

JOB CREATION Harper noted that presently more attention needs to be given to job creation for our young people and in the PPP/C manifesto “we will make sure jobs are created and more development and a number of new initiatives for job creation opportunities will be embarked upon.”

“With these new initiatives many more people will be able to enjoy a higher standard of living in this country”, she said.

“Our Manifesto talks about housing for young people, a vision that is geared to creating a Guyana with a great future, with more interacting and dialogue and facilitate our decision making within this sector,” Harper stated.

The PM Candidate concluded by urging supporters that on “May 11 you will be making a very important decision and I ask you to place your confidence in the PPP/C for continued progress in this country.”

Enhancing social capital GUYANESE are a strong, resilient people; a nation that has emerged triumphant from a very troubled past. And as long as this nation, as a collective, stands firmly in unity to continue on the path our forebears trod, then eventual prosperity would be realised sooner rather than later.

Thus, Guyanese should never let the opportunistic utterances and the “uninformed ramblings” of the in-

consequential and the insignificant derail the impetus of development initiatives and goals that the country is currently pursuing.

The Guyana Human Rights Association should take cognisance of the fact that human rights violations were factored into every aspect of the daily existence of every immigrant or emancipated slave, even after slavery was abolished, until the emergence of the People’s Progressive Party.

The struggles and accomplishments of the PPP and its women’s and youth arms, the WPO and the PYO, are well-chronicled, and the truth shall prevail over those who are attempting to re-write the history to make white seem black, and vice versa.

However, it is incumbent on every citizen of the land to embark on a dynamic thrust to re-affirm their commitment to solidifying the gains carved out of adversity by our forepar-

ents; the grassroots people, because that is where our national strength lies. The grassroots working-class is the foundation and the backbone of any nation.

Any government that neglects its working class is a poor government indeed.

Leaders should interact with the masses; be accessible to them in their times of difficulty, because this is the only way national leaders can build trust and discourage a landscape whereby the opportunists

could infiltrate its ranks with their false promises and grandiose but impractical “solutions”.

The educational/information quotient in outreach programmes should not be minimised, because knowledge provides armour against the pathological liars who are glib with their tongues and promises, so there is an imperative to be truthful to the citizens; to let them know if, when and how help can be provided, and what are the dynamics and the implications involved.

If immediate help cannot be provided, then they need to be told, and why, so that understanding and tolerance can re-build trust

in the areas where the infiltrators have weakened with their misrepresentations and lies.

Our country first began its development, through cooperative efforts, to build communities, so the need is imperative to follow the examples our foreparents set and work with persons across every divide in the nation so that these efforts sustain the primary goals always sought after by the older generation: That is, to unite the nation through trust-building developmental initiatives within Guyanese communities so as to enhance the social capital of Guyana.

We have always promoted agriculture as a vehicle for national prosperity, to end poverty and hunger, and provide opportunities for better lives for ALL Guyanese.

Agriculture is one of the engines of Guyana’s economic growth and a large scale employer. The PPP/C commits the highest priority to agricultural growth, recognizing its contribution to the economy, farmers’ income and rural development.

We will continue to implement appropriate policies to increase agriculture’s share of our GDP, increase employment in the sector, and in particular, increase the contribution of agriculture to economic growth, rural transformation and development in all ten (10) administrative regions.

The Agriculture Sector will continue to be built around the five areas known as the F5 Strategy: Food Security (no more hunger); Fiber and Nutritious Food (no more malnutrition); Fuel production (clean energy and energy security); Fashion and Health Products (expanding agro-processing

into areas outside of food); and Furniture and Crafts (further expansion of agriculture outside of food).

Our Commitments to Agribusiness will include: ● Fully implementing the National Agriculture Strategy. ● Improving farm-to-market transportation, including boats to assist farmers to transport produce to markets. ● Establishing packaging/ canning factories in various geographical locations to preserve and add value to agricultural produce. ● Transforming the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) to purchase produce from farmers and to re-sell to large users, like hospitals, manufacturers and for exports. ● Putting in place social safety nets to help farmers above 60 years, small and marginal farmers and farm labourers. ● Strengthening and expanding rural credit facilities. ● Introducing consumerfriendly farmers' markets to reduce wastage and increase income and risk coverage. ● Encouraging large scale

According to Jagdeo, there has been a major attempt “to capture the hearts and minds of soldiers by the inclusion of ex-military people in the PNC (People's National Congress Reform) campaign.”

Jagdeo told the thousands gathered that the Opposition argues “that they love the soldiers; that they will take good care of them… But I say to the soldiers and policemen who are not here (at the Stewartville Rally) but will be voting: You sit down and decide who has always supported you.”

The Former President offered a comparison of the expenditure on the Army by the two administrations that have held executive power in Guyana.

According to Jagdeo, by the end of the PNC’s tenure in Office in 1992, the total capital expenditure for the Army was less than the equivalent of the annual salary of the lowest paid rank currently in the military.

He stressed that at the time, the current Presidential Candidate of the coalesced A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC), Brigadier (Rt’d) David Granger, was a National Security Advisor to the then President, Forbes Burnham, while the

Coalition’s current financial pointsman, Carl Greenidge, was the then Minister of Finance.

BALLOT BOXES “How could they say they love you today and treated you with so much disdain,” said Jagdeo.

He reminded of a time when “soldiers didn’t have enough to eat in the military; they didn’t have equipment; they didn’t have clothing to wear; and you say that you love them today simply because you are ex-military men.”

The Former President in fact argues that the only legacy of Granger and his ex-military cohorts currently in the leadership of APNU “was to push them to steal ballot boxes.”

He said Granger’s legacy is the subversion of the professionalism of the Army, which forced “good career Officers in the Army to leave the country…They had to leave because they were bypassed by political commissars who were sent from the YSM.” The YSM, is the Youth and Student Movement of the PNC, the party’s youth arm.

He suggested too that Granger’s legacy in the army also surround the 400 weapons that were issued to the PNC, some of which “have shown up with the criminals now…That is Granger’s leg-

acy.”

FEAR The ever animated public speaker, Jagdeo told the receptive supporters—also donning party colours and paraphernalia—“how can you say you love the Army today because you parade a couple ex-military men and then your track record with the Army and Police is so dismal.”

Jagdeo in his clarion call to the disciplined services, bellowed, “I say to the soldiers, I say to the policemen, do not listen to their rhetoric because they are trying to play on your fear.”

The former president explained his theory, saying the political Opposition wants, “when they come on the streets, Soldiers and the Policemen will stay quiet, they wouldn’t do anything, they wouldn’t perform their duties, but I know the soldiers and the policemen.”

According to Jagdeo, the incumbent administration transformed the two security institutions into a “professional army, a professional police force and they will do their jobs.”

Let’s agree on these things FINDING agreement, seeing common grounds, all of us acknowledging definite facts of life in Guyana today, this would go a far way in healing the rift, dissent and strife that bedevils our body politic and social space.

Opposition spokespeople refuse with a stubborn stiff-neck to agree with Government on some of the most obvious truths about our society today.

It’s either Opposition folks wear blinkers in a deliberate ploy to deceive themselves, or they act with wicked intent. Whatever it is, the Opposition does itself a grave disserve, because it damages its own reputation and image in claiming some rather ridiculous stuff about our 21st Century Guyanese nation.

Two obvious deceptions that the lower minds among the Opposition camp try to foster upon us are that Guyana is today a dictatorship, and that no development happens.

So ridiculous and crass is this irrational, angry viewpoint that few citizens take it seriously, though the proponents of such lies find ready platform in a wayward, wild national media, causing vociferous and vocal noise nuisance in the national ear.

Sane minds among the Opposition cabal must, absolutely must, agree with the following: * President Donald Ramotar, in his humble service-leadership, puts Guy-

ana first, and cares about the nation. * In President Ramotar enacting the Rodney Commission, he’s performing a necessary and crucial role as President, in bringing healing and reconciliation to the national soul. * President Ramotar, despite severe tearing down from the 10th Parliament, achieved the outstanding success of socio-economic growth over the three years of his Presidency to date. In fact, Guyana achieved the best growth rate in the Commonwealth Caribbean. * Guyanese achieve universal Primary education, is on the verge of achieving universal Secondary education, and has embarked on achieving universal Tertiary education. * The Marriott is a great achievement for the Guyanese nation. * As the Manifesto of the ruling Party shows, Government has developed a sound and comprehensive socio-economic vision for this nation over the next five years. * Guyanese today enjoy the confidence of even the United States, with freedom to travel to North America with ease and ready access. * Government’s national housing program is a stunning success story, worthy of emulation in developing countries around the world.

We could go on listing positives of Guyana today, ad infinitum.

We’re not saying here that the Guyana Government built a utopia. We’ve got issues and

challenges to overcome, but President Ramotar listens to us, and takes steps to address such issues as Public Sector corruption, the sad state of our national media landscape, which demoralizes and demotivates citizens, and many others.

Much of this he’s outlined in the Party’s election manifesto.

No human society ever functions with perfection. Human nature being what it is, we’ve always got stuff to work on, challenges to overcome, problems to solve.

And we want to cultivate a national atmosphere whereby we’re a solution-oriented people. For this to happen we’ve got to design a national stage for the political Opposition to ditch its mean, myopic, miserable ways, and instead become a constructive, cooperating, collaborative force in the task of evolving the Guyanese nation into our potential as a 21st Century knowledge society.

Government functions with an eye to solutions, and designs projects, programs and plans that look to the future, that develops our country.

Government doesn’t see problems and find excuses. Government works to overcome the fallibility of human nature to cause us to rise as a people on the world stage.

With free and fair national and regional elections now an entrenched reality, the only national organ that takes on providing solutions, new initiatives and developmental vision for us is our Government.

We see citizen-participation

in the development process through a thriving Non-Governmental sector, but much of this depends on grant funding and aid from overseas, and all too frequently functions as stop-gap social programs.

The Private Sector also, despite its lack of real vision and widespread corruption embedded in its soul, partners well with Government to cause development to happen.

Government has built solid relationships with Private Sector organizations, civic bodies and citizen groups.

Left out in the cold in all this is the pouting Opposition, which touts a story of Guyana awfully foreign to the ear of any rational, independent-thinking Guyanese.

Opposition folks would do their constituency and supporters the world of good just to acknowledge that Guyana has leaped forward, and no longer languishes in gross poverty, with rigged elections and State paranoia making us a laughing stock in the world.

How good their supporters would feel to hear their leaders tell them that Guyana offers them a brilliant opportunity for self-development and personal growth, to encourage Guyanese to embrace progress and build on the platform of solid socio-economic development across the land.

This motivating, inspiring message from the ruling Party side of the fence drives Government supporters with lifted spirits, a soaring soul, and a determined effort to rise in the world, to achieve our personal

dreams and to aspire to greater things.

Left behind, Opposition supporters hear their leaders tell them that they can’t pursue self-development, because Government is bad. Such things smack of wickedness and a dreaded mindset, set on tearing down and self-destructing our nation.

Such is the human condition, that little tweaks in the political attitudes within the Opposition camp, to, for example, reign in those who tear down our national social space with wrong words, would go a far way in repairing the image and reputation of our body politic.

Guyana today faces some serious challenges, like the brain drain, and, like every country in this global village in today’s new, emerging Knowledge Age, we’re working to re-design our way of being to see taking root a culture of knowledge pursuit and lifelong learning.

We work to develop and grow our national knowledge pool, to see our human resources capital become our greatest national asset. We

know that our intellectual capital forms the foundation for our future, and that’s why such goals as universal Secondary and Tertiary education operate at the forefront of our development goals.

These things should occupy the Opposition, instead of the small, petty issues that cause sleepless nights and angry tirades in the wild media landscape across this nation.

Let’s agree on these things, and we’ll cultivate and engineer and create a smooth, strife-free foundation for our national discussions, debates on programs, and modus operandi to achieve our developmental vision.

Unless we agree on these fundamental things, we would fall out of alignment with the structural necessity of creating a Guyanese social space that hums with excitement, inspiring energy and aliveness, our people facing the same direction, knitted together in heart and soul as one people, moving to bring into reality the Guyana Dream, to make us a great nation in this 21st Century world.

Little chance of conciliating past evils under APNU+AFC Gov’t --coalition turns to Obama in defence of ominous campaign message—Shah

AN advertisement in the press depicting President of the United States of America (USA), Barack Obama’s quote stating, he would not be imprisoned by the past and referring to the Cold War era as being over, must be the coalition’s attempt to respond to the criticisms of its ominous campaign message.

This is the view held by Ryhaan Shah, international author and rights activist, who, in her most recent observations and contributions through public missives, has responded to the coalesced A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change’s (APNU) political advert, by firstly pointing

Ryhaan Shah out that President Obama’s comments was informed by years of document analysis and studies.

“Scholars, historians and politicians on both sides of the Cold War have examined and analysed that war, and numerous books and articles have been written, and films

and documentaries produced on just about every aspect of it…It can be safely said that it is exhausted as a topic and everyone can be detached and even philosophical about it, Hence, President Obama’s statement.”

She contends however that, “none of this is even remotely analogous (similar) to Guyana where the coalition leaders are actually telling us to put aside the past…They do not even want it remembered much less examined and analysed.”

According to Ms. Shah, “Messrs. (Brigadier rtd) David Granger and Moses Nagamootoo placing their smiling faces next to President Obama’s is seen as

the advertising gimmick that it is…They can never be Obama’s equals…They have neither the integrity nor dignity.”

In her missive to the media, Shah said, “Every single one of us would like to be in the position of America and every other nation that has dealt with its past – Germany, Japan and Northern Ireland come to mind – and has then been able to move on.”

The international Guyanese born novelist observed too that “In Northern Ireland there is a group called Healing Through Remembering (HTR).”

This group she points out, comprises a diverse membership with different political perspectives work-

ing on a common goal of how to deal with the legacy of the past as it relates to the country’s conflict.

She has surmised that HTR’s work is framed by sound principles for dealing with the past including respect, diversity of opinion, willingness to engage and inclusivity.

“Their experience is very relevant to Guyana but, as I have stated before, we have no leadership that will take us to this juncture of healing and reconciliation…Instead, our past festers and with the coalition campaigning on forgetting history, there is little chance that if they form the next government that our past will ever be reconciled

and healed.”

She suggest too that for both campaigns, unity is a song and dance on top a stage adding that “Only in Guyana could senior politicians get away with forwarding the idea that not considering the past is the best way forward.”

According to Shah, the use of rearview mirrors is essential to safe driving, “If you do not keep a close eye on the rearview mirror as you drive forward you will be a danger on the roads…cannot go as far as the coalition leaders do and wish anyone to crash and die…That is offensive, and unbecoming of men who see themselves as leaders.”

STAND BY ME! --and let us deliver the biggest victory for the PPP/C! “THE CUP has been a faithful utensil, and so, too, has the PPP/C, standing by you at every important juncture of the history of our country.

“Therefore, I ask of you on May 11, seventeen days from now, to stand by me and let us deliver the biggest victory for the PPP/C! This is so necessary for the progress and development of this country to continue!”

His Excellency President Donald Ramotar, as leader of the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), made this stentorian appeal to thousands of attendees of a vibrant public meeting last Friday evening at Market Street, Industry, East Coast Demerara.

“Comrades of Industry,” he intoned, “we have 17 more days to go, as we are

here tonight. Because, as you know, the Opposition in Parliament was doing everything to try and stop the development which was taking place in this country!”

The Head of State went on to highlight that the opposition coalition, A Partnership For National Unity and the Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC), are telling the Guyanese people that they have plans for development, but yet they disclosed that, if they win the upcoming May 11 elections, within the first 100 days of assuming office, they will make a plan.

This, he contended, proves the opposition’s inconsistency and shows their lack of seriousness, as they have absolutely no vision for the development of Guyana.

Can you trust them with your children’s future, given the fact that they have no plan for the future of Guyana?”

The President pointed out the failures of the APNU+AFC coalition to contribute towards development of this country, and said that, for the last three years, there was not one instance of their contributing to the development of Guyana.

The President said that all the APNU+AFC did was to cut almost $89B from the budget; and that money was to attend to things which would have redounded to the betterment of Guyana as a whole, not luxury items.

SUGAR INDUSTRY Elaborating on how the Opposition would retard

progress in Guyana, President Ramotar highlighted the APNU+AFC’s plans to shut down the sugar industry. He acknowledged the existence of many problems in the sugar industry, but declared that those problems began only when the European Union (EU) reneged on its agreement with the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries and cut the price of sugar in 2010 by 36%.

That apart, he said, another problem affecting the sugar industry is that the economy has grown, and the sugar industry has had to compete for labour with the construction and mining sectors, thus it has developed a labour shortage.

Yet, he said, unlike the Opposition, the PPP/C did not give up on sugar.

The President disclosed that “to compensate for the

problems within the industry, the Government has to help by restructuring, providing more machine-friendly field layouts, modernizing the factory, acquiring new revenue streams, establishing facilities to refine and package, make ethanol and different kinds of products, so as to diversify the sugar industry.

And in order to do this, he said: “I will remain committed towards investing $20B over the next 5 years into the sugar industry.”

“But when we tried to help the industry by putting $6B to help the industry, the Opposition voted against it and tried to cut it from the budget, suggesting that we should stop planting cane and mine tilapia in the sugar cane field,” the President explained.

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar has acknowledged the tremendous missionary and humanitarian work of the Salvation Army in Guyana, and extended heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Guyana Division of the Salvation Army as it celebrates its 120th Anniversary since being established here.

The recent episode of these allegations was highlighted by fellow youth candidate of the APNU+AFC coalition and attorney-at-law, James Bond, who took to Facebook, expressing his belief that a businessman who resides in Berbice was guilty of this act.

Bond, in his post, said: “Just got word that a prominent businessman in the horse-racing fraternity of Berbice is buying ID Cards and also threatening to fire any employee that votes since he thinks they are voting for APNU+AFC.” He continued: “My people of the Corentyne, go and put your ‘X’ by the Palm with the Key. If they fire you, we

will get jobs for you.”

Restricting the questions to youth-related issues at Saturday’s press conference, the media then asked whether these numerous allegations which had been made could be supported by evidence.

But the three youth candidates of the Coalition responded in the negative, with Mark Ross, youth representative of the AFC stating, “To date, all we’ve had are complaints that there have been attempts to do so.”

According to Ross, the coalition has advised that people explore the option of recording these conversations on their cellular phones, which would provide a basis for these allegations. However, to date, they have come up empty handed.

Sarabo-Halley echoed similar sentiments, disclosing

that attempts will be made to provide proof as opposed to ‘hearsay’.

She then sought to shift the responsibility of providing the evidence to activists who would have been doing groundwork for the Coalition.

“I think the reality is that the activists on the ground would be better able to respond to that particular question because we just hear it after the activists would have gone through the experiences.

So probably at a next press conference we can have one of those activists who would have been a part of that conversation to be here to give you more information.

But we will try to give you more proof rather than hearsay as what it is right now,” the youth candidate told reporters.

Cops probing suspected ‘powdered carbon’ in rice at GDF Base AN ISOLATED incident where a packet of what is suspected to be powdered carbon was found in a bag of rice supplied to the Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) Base Camp Stephenson, Timehri, is being investigated.

A statement from the GDF says,“At approximately 06:30 hrs this morning, a sealed bag of rice was opened by ration store personnel in order that rice could be distributed to various kitchens at Base Camp Stephenson.

While dipping the rice out, the two ranks observed a brown paper bag which they inadvertently tore as they dipped the rice. Inside the paper bag, was a substance suspected to be powered carbon.”

The Force has noted that there are no indications that any other food items were contaminated.

“At the moment, this appears to be an isolated incident as there has been no other indication that there are any other rice bag or food items which are contaminated,” the GDF said.

It assured that it will continue to exercise diligence and seek to ensure that it mitigates any possibility of harm coming to its troops.

Agriculture Minister, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, when asked to comment on the rice supply, explained that reports he has received indicates that the Mill sold some 179 bags of rice to a retail distributor, which then supplied a number of customers, including the GDF. “From what we have

learnt so far, there was a problem with one bag that was supplied to the Guyana Defence Force and investigations are going on,” he said.

Dr Ramsammy stressed that this incident is not widespread and all efforts are being made to address it. “We are taking this issue very seriously and investigating,” he assured.

PPP/C ON ‘LEAKED’ APNU+AFC MANIFESTO…

‘Non-cohesive, loosely put together’ – also lacking strategic insights

By Navendra Seoraj IN expressing their disappointment in the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) manifesto, members of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), after examining the so-called ‘leaked’ document, adjudged it to be without cohesion and seemingly put together loosely by many people.

Speaking Saturday during a press conference, PPP/C member, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy noted that there are many promises, some even irresponsible, and even promises that they cannot implement.

According to Dr. Ramsammy, “We note also that there are many proposals that have been taken from the PPP’s various strategies and work plans, including some programmes that are presently being implemented.”

Apart from that, the veteran PPP/C member stressed that it is highly audacious for the Opposition coalition to be promoting things that they have voted against in the 10th parliament.

One of the promises highlighted in the APNU+AFC manifesto, which Dr. Ramsammy said left him intrigued, is the 20% salary increase for the military and police, and 10% for public

Elaborating more on the sugar industry Dr. Ramsammy expressed his continued disappointment on the equivocal decision by the Opposition on sugar.

President Ramotar also spoke at length on educational development, which he said entailed the Government building and refurbished more than 1000 schools in Guyana; providing text books and uniforms for the children; achieving Universal Primary Education; and lots more achievements.

The President promised that, once re-elected, in less than a year, universal secondary education would be achieved.

PRIME MINISTER HINDS TELLS SOUTH RUIMVELDT RESIDENTS…

Love and forgive APNU/AFC, but vote PPP/C – equates incessant charges of corruption to throwing grease

By Tajeram Mohabir OUTGOING Prime Minister Samuel Hinds has urged South Ruimveldt, Georgetown residents to love and forgive the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR)-controlled A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) Alliance, but vote solidly for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) on May 11.

South Ruimveldt is a known Opposition stronghold. Speaking at a recent public meeting at Johnny P Square, a passionate Hinds told the sizeable gathering that the major difference the PNC and the PPP/C is that the latter has taken a different approach to governance.

And the PPP/C formula, he said, has been a far more productive and effective one.

The Prime Minister explained that the position taken by the PPP/C has always been broad-based, bringing all onboard regardless of their race, religion and political persuasion, as the party recognises the need for all to play a constructive role in the development of Guyana.

But more importantly, he said, the PPP/C since assuming power in 1992 has focused on building a better Guyana and improving the lives of all Guyanese.

WORK IN PROGRESS This, he told the residents, is still a work in progress, and with their generous support on May 11, a lot more will be achieved.

Prime Minister Hinds said South Ruimveldt, a community of hard working men and women, has over the past 23 years seen development, as every other place throughout Guyana.

EVIDENCE Development is evident in new roads, access to potable water, improved housing and the vast majority of Guyanese family now having their own homes and their own motor vehicles, he said.

than the PNC Government as it devoted great attention to strict financial discipline, to get value for what it paid for. $10,000 GRANT In building a people who will lead Guyana on a firm footing into the 21st Century, he said, the PPP/C recognised the importance of youth, and year after year, it has channeled the largest sum of the national budget to the education sector. To support poor parents, Government has also been giving a $10,000 grant to assist families in meeting some of their children’s school expenses.

Some 1,000 schools have been built, and communities are much happier, especially those in the hinterland regions, as their children now have access to a secondary education.

A number of hinterland students who did well at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) had gone on to study med-

icine and engineering in Cuba and have returned and are serving in their respective communities.

The same energy, Prime Minister Hinds said, is being funneled into the health sector, pointing out that more hospitals and health centres have been built throughout the country.

Today, he said, there are more locally-trained doctors in Guyana than at any time before in the country, noting that the PPP/C Government is focused on building Guyana step-by-step, and a Guyana for all Guyanese.

CORRUPTION LIKE ‘GREASE’ But, he said the process requires the help of all, including the political Opposition. Much of what is said about the Government in certain sections of the media the Prime Minister said is not reflective of the truth, particularly the daily reports of corruption.

who believe that if they throw enough dirt on the Government, it will stick, and this is what they have been doing through the media.

He said the Government has never denied that corruption existed, and has never said point blank that it will not address it. In fact, he said, it was the PPP/C Government that introduced rules to stop corruption, pointing out that the process in awarding of contracts at the National Tender and Procurement Administration is open, fair and transparent.

This was not the case prior to 1992, the Prime Minister said, contending that some of those who complain about corruption do so out of a failed expectation when their bids are not successful after going through scrutiny at the National Tender Board.

Describing their utterances as unfortunate, Prime Minister Hinds urged them not to lose faith, and to keep

trying, but nevertheless said that this aspect of the corruption claims is grease and will slide way.

Former President of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) Gillian Burton, who spoke before the PM, said there is no perfect Government and there will always be challenges.

But she noted that there is no doubt South Ruimveldt has improved under the PPP/C Administration.

She said the improvement happened largely because the Government is committed to the development of Guyana and sticks to the promises it makes with the people.

Burton said under the PPP/C Government, there has been improvements in the health and education sectors, women have been empowered under the Women of Worth (WoW) Project, many women have their own homes, and every Guyanese family will have access to a computer under the One Laptop Per Family Project.

On May 11, she urged South Ruimveldt residents to set a date with destiny and vote resoundingly for the PPP/C. PPP/C is proud of its track record in Government, pointing out that the PNC, which now controls the APNU+AFC Alliance, is no match, contending that notwithstanding the lies, distortions, misinformation and disinformation being peddled in certain sections of the media, there is no viable alternative to the current Government.

And this is why Guyanese should vote without hesitation for the PPP/C. The PNC, he said, at one time was in power and through their dictatorship government they brought the nation to its knees.

Today, he said, they are asking the nation to forget about the past, and vote for them, but he urged the electorate not to be persuaded by the Alliance, which wants them to gamble their lives to give them power.

The Cabinet Secretary said Guyanese must ask themselves what the standard of living was 23 years ago, and what it is today.

The PPP/C, he said, has brought light to Guyana when it was in darkness; has brought hope to Guyana when it was in a state of hopelessness; and has brought unprecedented development to Guyana when it was in a state of ruin.

Dr Luncheon said all must come out and vote on May 11, pointing out that every vote for the PPP/C is a vote to protect the gains made over the past 23 years, and to enable the incumbent Government to continue improving the lives of all Guyanese.

Salvation Army celebrating 120th anniversary with week-long programme

By Shirley Thomas THE Guyana Division of the Salvation Army began celebrating its 120th Anniversary last Thursday with a spirited Civic Reception at its headquarters at South Road and Alexander Street, Georgetown.

The theme of the celebrations, which will run for one week, is “Honour the Past; Embrace the Future; Celebrate the Present”.

Guests of Honour at the reception were visiting Territorial Leaders of the Caribbean Region, Commissioners Gerrit and Eva Marseille, accompanied

by Guyanese-born Captain Dwayne Barnes of the USA Eastern Territory.

Distinguished guests on the local front included Leader of the Opposition, Brigadier (Ret’d) David Granger; Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who attended on behalf of President Donald Ramotar; Georgetown Mayor Mr. Hamilton Green; Vice Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Mr. Lawrence Farley, who attended on behalf of Chairman Mr. Edward Boyer (who is out of the country); and Chairman of the Guyana Council of Churches, Rev. Andrew C. Morris-Grant.

These all brought greetings on this most auspicious occasion.

And visiting from the United States was one of the oldest former members of the Guyana Division, Ms. Vilma Harper, who has decades of service, and who

was honoured on Sunday at a special Recognition and Praise Exercise at the Pegasus Hotel.

Joining the Guyana Division in celebration also were representatives from Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname, who were in for a memorable treat.

Presiding official was Divisional Commander Major Emmerson Cumberbatch.

The speakers all congratulated the Salvation Army on its accomplishments -both in Guyana and globally -- over the years: ministering to the spiritual and social needs of people, particularly

in the area of rehabilitation of substance abusers; caring for elders; feeding programmes providing hot meals for children and senior citizens; and other social programmes delivered by the Women’s Ministries – Skills for Life delivered to women through its Home League, as well as the work of the League of Mercy doing visitation to shut-ins, patients in hospitals and other vital social services.

There were also words of advice on the way forward, and recommendations for delivering a programme that would ensure the equitable

distribution of energies and resources to match the needs and demands of the various programmes and tasks as devolved on the Salvation Army.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force Band played a key role in adding spice and flavour to the programme, alternating with the Salvation Army band to deliver choice and well composed pieces.

The programme was ushered in with a prelude of rich symphony rendered by the Police Band at its best; and at the end of the programme, that band solemnly delivered

the Doxology, taking the congregation out with the symphonic and hair-raising sounds of Handel’s age old “Where e’er You Walk, cool glades shall fan the Gale’.

And how appropriate and heart- warming were the sentiments to take the congregation out!

Presiding official was Divisional Commander Major Emmerson Cumberbatch, while Major Cludette Thibaud gave the welcome on behalf of the officers. Board Member Rev. Justice Oslen Small delivered the opening prayer, making the way for Greetings and Scripture Reading by visiting Commissioner Eva Marseille, Territorial President for Women’s Ministries.

Territorial Commander Commissioner Gerrit Marseille addressed the congregation.

The programme was interspersed with vocal selections by the Divisional Youth Chorale, and celebration dance done by the Divisional Dance Group and the Mahaicony YP Youth Group.

The curtain came down on the abundantly gratifying programme with Prayer and Benediction offered by Major Ulrick Thibaud Corps, Programme Manager of the S.A. Drug Rehabilitation Programme.

Celebrations continued throughout the week with A Youth Extravaganza at the Theatre Guild on Friday; March-of-Witness through the streets of Georgetown on Saturday; Anniversary Fund-raising Dinner at the Pegasus lon Saturday evening; and 120th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service at 10:00 hrs yesterday, followed by Recognition/ Praise Meeting at the Savannah Suite, Pegasus, beginning at 14:00 hrs.

OBSERVERS Jagdeo also used the occasions to speak directly to the international observers in Guyana for the 2015 General and Regional Elections, currently being viciously contested between the incumbent, PPP/C and the coalesced APNU+AFC. In his address, Jagdeo reminded that the APNU+AFC, Presidential Candidate, Granger has begun to question the Official list of voters.

“Three years they had of continuous registration, three years of claims and objections, not a word about the list and suddenly in the

last three weeks the list is flawed.”

Jagdeo suggested this was the response of the Opposition camp to the large numbers turning out at the various PPP/C meetings and rallies.

He surmised that the political Opposition is, “preparing an excuse for their defeat and so we have to be vigilant.”

He said that during the 2011 Elections PPP/C polling agents were thrown out of the polling stations out by opposition members which led to a number of discrepancies over the accuracy of the votes tallied at those locations.

“We have to guard against that happening again…We know they often try to invade

the polling stations in some areas in the afternoons.”

AFTER DARK Jagdeo, in warning supporters, said, “As soon as it starts to turn dark, they will make an attempt; some of them to get into the Polling Stations to create confusion.”

As a result, according to Jagdeo, “the observers have to pay attention to that.”

Putting PPP/C supporters on standby also, the former president told the crowd, “you have to pay attention to that too because they will spare no means to try to win political power.”

This behaviour, Jagdeo said has been demonstrated in the past by the political

Opposition, “and they have not changed they will attempt it again if we let our guard down.”

PUBLISH PENALTIES Jagdeo also called on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to publish in the daily newspapers, every instruction handed down to the presiding officers, “so that they do not act capriciously.”

He said too that GECOM must also publish in the newspapers, “the penalties, the jail term that are associated with tampering with the poll and we must all prosecute those people who try to tamper with the poll.”

the elections, we don’t rig elections, we don’t have to cheat to win but anyone who attempts to do this must face consequence.”

According to Jagdeo, “Comrades we need to be vigilante, we need the observers to be vigilant, we need the police and the military to understand the mind-game that is being played by APNU and the others.”

Jagdeo told his supporters to not pay heed to the intimidation and the tearing down of the party posters and campaign paraphernalia.

“Posters don’t win elections, votes do and we have those,” Jagdeo said, to a thunderous applause.

New batch of nurses inducted A NEW batch of nurses, numbering 51 (21 Nursing Assistants and 30 Professional Nurses) has been inducted for training at the Kingston Nursing School Annex. They are currently

undergoing orientation and are set to begin training early next month.

This is the 126th batch of Professional Nurses and the 69th batch of Nursing Assistants to have been enlisted for

training.

Jermaine Levi who was chosen to study Professional Nursing felt honoured. “It’s an honour to be selected by the Government and my country to do something so important

and I think my fellow batch mates would agree. After training I would like to upgrade and study medicine.”

Latisha Bailey is yet another student who felt happy for the opportunity to become

a nurse and would continue in the midwifery programme and then go on to the University of Guyana to obtain a degree in nursing.

Naomi Singh was happy and thanked the Ministry of Health and the Government for allowing her the opportunity at the Nursing School.

She plans to pursue studies for a PHD. Adrian Kemo Canjis alluded to the conducive environment, as well as the

teachers and classmates whom he said are all friendly.

Dionne Pompei noted that while it was a lovely experience for her, meeting other persons and nursing in general, “it’s a lovely profession for anyone to pick up and afterward I hopefully will have to serve back my country.” She added that she will also further her education, perhaps get a diploma then continue to climb higher. GPHC joins other stakeholders in observing World OSH Week 2015

By Shivanie Sugrim THE Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) joined in commemorating World Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Week 2015.

Staged at the GPHC’s Resource Centre on Friday, representatives of the various collaborators extended brief remarks on the importance of World OSH Week 2015.

Thereafter, badges were presented to the management and non-management OSH members who would have proven to be diligent workers this year.

In delivering his remarks on behalf of the GPHC, CEO of the GPHC Michael Khan recognised the importance of having a functional OSH committee and fully endorsed the event to commemorate World Day on OSH which will be celebrated tomorrow.

The OSH Act mandates the employer to ensure that the machinery, equipment, agents, premises and work processes are safe and without risk to the health of all workers.

“I have the task to also ensure that workers are consulted, informed and trained on all aspects of OSH,” said Khan.

TRAINING BY CAGI Following that statement, Khan said he was proud to disclose that five members of staff from the GPHC were afforded the opportunity to participate in a training course facilitated by the Consultative Association of Guyanese Industry (CAGI) and would be looking forward to many proposals from that group of workers to implement what they have learnt.

“I recognize that management cannot achieve this alone; we need the advice and support of the OSH Committee,” noted Khan.

He then implored the OSH representatives to actively participate in the implementation of preventive and control measures that will allow the workers to work in a safe environment. Added to that, he reminded the gathering of OSH representatives and officers that meetings and other activities are to be held to afford the assistance and cooperation to the OSH committee.

The CEO also noted that the OSH committee has the logo “Safety begins with team work” and urged the collaborators to work together as a team to join in building a culture of prevention in OSH. Similar sentiments were also delivered by OSH representatives present at the event.

Fire razes gov’t building in Region 8 The fire at its onset

FIRE of as yet unknown origins yesterday razed a government building in Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni), rendering twelve persons from four families homeless.

The Regional Administration said in a press release yesterday that it received a fire call at about

14:22hrs yesterday and immediately dispatched its fire tender within four minutes of the initial call. The tender was driven by the Regional Executive Officer Ronald Harsawack and another staffer, who were both in the Administrative compound at the time of the call.

On arrival, two of the four apartments of the wooden and concrete structure were ablaze, aided by a heavy wind. The building accommodated staff from the Health, Administrative and Public Works Departments of Region 8.

Additional ranks of the Mahdia Fire Auxiliary Brigade later arrived to provide back-up, the release stated.

Two of the now homeless victims collapsed at the roadside and immediate medical attention was rendered by the doctors on site. They were

subsequently treated at the Mahdia District Hospital for elevated blood pressure and smoke inhalation.

An adjoining building, which houses the doctors, was saved with only minor damage to its windows, the release said.

REO Harsawack said the 450-gallon tank supply was exhausted within three minutes of operation. At that time, the release said, the fire was initially contained, until gas cylinders exploded, sending flames throughout the entire structure. At this point, the fire tender sought to access water from an overhead reservoir from a nearby gas station, but efforts proved futile. The tender then proceeded to a nearby creek to replenish its supply.

Members of the Mahdia Fire Brigade, and staff of the Regional Administration manned the operation while assistance was rendered by public-spirited citizens. The Guyana Police Force was instrumental in keeping the large crowd away.

Twelve persons from four families lost all of their belongings. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the Guyana Fire Service is expected to launch an investigation shortly.

He told the gathering not to gamble the future of the country with “charlatans” and that the PPP/C was the only party with a coherent vision for the nation and its people.

Veteran trade unionist, Komal Chand, was another of the party stalwarts to appear on the PPP/C platform for the 2015 campaign and he told supporters, “you have to bring an end to this nonsense.”

Party General Secretary, Clement Rohee, also used his opportunity at the podium to remind Region Three supporters to guard their interests at the polling stations on Elections Day. He said that on May 11, it will be a battle of two giants; a battle of good over evil, with the weapon of choice for the PPP/C being that of the ballot.

Redacting his ‘battle-ofthe-giants’ analogy, Rohee surmised that the political race was in fact between a “thoroughbred” in the person of Head of State, Donald Ramotar and a “kangalang”, whom he referred to as the Opposition Presidential Candidate, Brigadier (rtd) David Granger.

Other speakers addressing the mammoth gathering at Stewartville yesterday were the PPP/C’s Presidential and Prime Ministerial Candidates, Donald Ramotar and Elisabeth Harper, both of whom spoke to the proposed policies, plans and proposals of the incumbent administration should it be reelected to office come May 11.

THE Nigerian Student Association of Guyana (NSAG), a body of Nigerian Medical Students being trained at Universities in Guyana, has once again made considerable impact in the humanitarian arena, with a donation of much-needed items to orphans in the city.

This time around, the beneficiaries were the West Ruimveldt Children’s Home, an orphanage run by the Wesleyan Church in Guyana and situated in East La Penitence.

The donation was made recently and donors brought immense joy to the hearts of the less fortunate children who beamed as they beheld the items being presented to them. Items included foodstuff, beverages, clothing, and toiletries. Also included was a freshly baked and beautifully decorated chocolate cake for any child at the orphanage who would have had a birthday around that time.

The lucky child turned out to be Roger Neblett, who celebrated his 12th birthday on April 18. The cake was stuck and all the children present, joined by the administrative staff and the 18 student doctors making the presentation, joined in lustily singing the “Happy Birthday” song.

president of the association, Innocent Eyiazu, in delivering brief remarks.

Eyiazu said that the association engages in such goodwill gestures as often as they could, in order to show love to the less fortunate kids, while playing a part in the community that is hosting them as they pursue their career goals.

“As students, we get a lot from the community and so we try to give back to the community wherever we can, and this is just one of the things we do,” Eyiazu said.

The NSAG president further disclosed that the association has other plans to make a positive impact on the lives of children in Guyana, especially those in secondary schools.

To this end, he said NSAG has offered to assist in coaching in science subjects in secondary schools where there might be teacher -shortages.

“We have observed that there is a shortage of science teachers in the country. Some of us here are graduates in science streams and we would be willing to assist a few schools by taking the science courses to the high schools ,” Eyiazu said.

He said the Association has already taken this proposal to the Ministry of Education and is at this time, awaiting a response. “If they

approve and assign us one or two schools we’ll be glad.

We want to start as early as we can, and if it works out, we probably will start next month.”

Eyiazu said they’ll probably give it a one- year shot in the first instance and see how it works, in terms of judging if there is an improvement in the performance of the children at CSEC who would have been coached by them.

“This is our little way of giving back to the people of Guyana, and we are happy to do that,” the NSAG president concluded.

Meanwhile, Frederick Philemon said that the association recognises every child present at the orphanage as being a potential leader of this nation, adding that they see a future in the institution.

“We are not only interested in ourselves. We believe in social- building, we believe in the people, we believe in humanity. We are here gathered to show an appreciation for what God has given to us; to share with our brothers and sisters. We see a future in this orphanage. We recognise every individual right here as being a potential leader of this nation. We recognise that everybody here , put together makes up a better nation,” he declared.

He congratulated the Government of Guyana for the role it plays in offering subventions for institutions providing care for orphans and vulnerable children, as well as its immensely successful foster care programme, which finances and offers other support for children adopted through the Ministry of Human Services’ foster- care

The children at Saturday’s presentation were also involved in highly interactive sessions with the doctors in training. The association’s social worker, dental student Anyanwu Fortune, engaged them in a Bible Quiz competition and games such as musical chairs, for which the winners were given incen-

tives.

Currently there are more than 100 Nigerian students pursuing medical studies at the University of Guyana, Texila American University and other universities in Guyana.

St. George’s Cathedral restoration ...

Dean Carto told the gathering yesterday at St. George’s Cathedral that an evaluation was done through the services of Grenadian firm, TVA Consultancy Ltd. In May last year from two visits, the firm observed that there are few buildings in the world like the St. George’s so there is need to restore and preserve it.

Dean Carto disclosed that the first phase of the eastern wall was restored from a donation of G$1M from the National Trust of Guyana and the advance restoration of the northern wall will begin in two weeks from a donation from the Trustees/Diocese of Guyana.

He added that they will seek the services of the relevant authorities to rectify the flooding problem they encounter whenever it rains in an effort to safeguard the foundation of the building and they will soon be able to have a look at the roof as well to

NATIONAL MONUMENT St. George’s Cathedral is an Anglican Cathedral in Georgetown, Guyana and is one of the tallest wooden

churches in the world, at a height of 43.5 metres (143 ft).

It is the seat of the Bishop of Guyana. St. George’s was designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield and opened on August 24, 1982. The building was completed in 1899. It is located on Church Street in Georgetown and has been designated a National Monument.

The history of the Anglican Church in Guyana can be traced as far back as 1781, when the Reverend William Baggs, Chaplain to Sir George Rodney, came to Guyana. However, his stay was short-lived and it was not until 1796 that the impact of Anglicanism was felt, when reverend Francis MacMahon

began holding services in a room on the ground floor of a building that was on the site of the present Parliament Buildings.

The first church dates back to 1810 and was erected on a site that now houses St. George’s School. This church soon became too small for its increasing membership. In 1839 the foundation stone for a large church was laid and the small church was relocated at St. Matthew’s Parish, East Bank Demerara.

The second church was completed in 1842 and became the first cathedral, as a Bishop (William Piercy Austin) was consecrated and the Diocese of Guiana created on August 24, 1842.

However, because of a fault in the structure of the building, it began cracking in several places and soon became unsuitable for habitation. It was subsequently dismantled. In 1877, a temporary Pro-Cathedral was erected in the ground of the Deanery at a cost of G$10,000.

Arthur Blomfield then produced the first plan for the new cathedral – for a building in a stone with a central tower

and two western towers; but these were rejected because of the weight and the expense.

His subsequent plans for a wooden cathedral were accepted, a design that kept many of the salient features of his first plan, such as the central tower and the Latin cross formation of nave and transepts. It was in the Gothic style of architecture, complete with flying buttresses but it also had a tropical flavour, ensuring air and light.

DIVORCING the “injurious” levels to which the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was taken by the former People’s National Congress (PNC) regime and the current influx of ex-military officials into the leadership of the political Opposition is a difficult endeavour.

Consequently, Secretary to the Defence Board, Dr Roger Luncheon, contends that successes made by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administrations since 1992 in rehabilitating the image of the armed forces are under threat.

PROOF OF MILITARISATION According to him, the fact that APNU received some support from ex-military officers in 2011 is different from what obtains in 2015.

As such, he disclosed that the current Administration has “concrete information” of the militarisation of the political Opposition, the alliance of APNU and the Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC).

Dr Luncheon said, “When I show you the details that we have about the involvement of retired military in the leadership, not only the rank and file, but in the leadership of APNU+AFC coalition, I think you will have to agree that 2015 is a different kettle of fish than 2011.”

In addition to the APNU+AFC leader, the other senior ex-military and police officers that are now “ensconced” within the political Opposition are Lt. Col. Joseph Harmon, former Commissioner of Police, Winston Felix, Brigadier Edward Collins and more recently the immediate past Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Gary Best.

On the question of ex-military officials, including Chiefs-of-Staff, Major General (retd) Joe Singh and Major General (retd) Michael Atherly, Luncheon made it clear that at no point were these men asked to pledge support to the PPP/C; rather, they are functioning in capacities that benefit Guyana and the Guyanese people. “These people got knowledge that Government could use,” he said.

This was not what we have prepared the Guyanese public for… this development was not part of our conception,” he said.

The Defence Board Secretary stressed that the efforts of the PPP/C were no easy task, and reiterated that the successes ought not be threatened.

“It has been the aim and indeed been a success in the effort by this PPP/C administration to restore the confidence of the Guyanese people in the professionalism of the GDF. It wasn’t an easy task, keeping in mind the many negatives that occurred under the rule of party paramountcy, to which the then military establishment subscribed,” he stressed. (Vanessa Narine)

PPP/C offers new Regional multi-purpose sports facilities in manifesto … boasts of sporting infrastructure to develop skills training THE ruling People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) on Saturday launched its manifesto title ‘Our Vision 2.0’ at the Marriott Hotel and among President Donald Ramotar party’s plans for Guyana, if re-elected, is the building of new Regional multi-purpose facilities in each county - Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice.

With Guyana gearing for the May 11 Regional and General Elections, the political parties are all out to garner enough support and votes to either remain in power, as the case of the PPP/C, while many have zeroed in on the main opposition – the APNU+AFC – to see what they have to offer if given a chance in office.

The APNU+AFC manifesto hasn’t been made public and though leaked via the social network Facebook, the party has made it clear that it would be unwise to use it (the leaked manifesto) as its position and vision to take Guyana forward.

Meanwhile, the PPP/C manifesto stated that in recent years, considerable progress has been made in creating sporting opportunities for young people and on building notable infrastructure projects including the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, the National Aquatic Centre in Turkeyen and the National Track and Field Centre, West Coast Demerara.

It added that now that the infrastructure is in place, the PPP/C will continue to empower youths and athletes.

The intention is also there to work with decision-makers and community leaders to promote sports for the positive contribution it makes to the life and health in the community and country.

A proposal is also made by the PPP/C, where over the next five years; a longterm Athlete Development Principles will be developed by sport organisations, clubs and community groups, as part of their strategic sport development plans.

The party said that they will ensure that the economic benefits of sport to Guyana are optimised by promoting Sport Tourism through more international tournaments and also, maintain and increase the number of qualified and dedicated coaches, officials and sport volunteers that can nurture and grow the Guyana sport system by establishing inter alia a Coaches’ Accreditation Council.

Increasing the number of professional coaches working in Guyana, the manifesto says, will be done by establishing the Guyana Sports Institute, ensuring that all citizens have affordable access to well-maintained, equipped and resourced community and school facilities.

Chelsea edge closer to title with Arsenal draw

By Martyn Herman LONDON, England (Reuters) - The man selling ‘Chelsea Champions 2015’ scarves outside The Emirates was a little premature but he is unlikely to be asked for refunds after they ground out a 0-0 Premier League draw at Arsenal yesterday.

Apart from three penalty appeals, the strongest of which saw Arsenal’s goalkeeper clatter into Chelsea’s Oscar in the first half and put the Brazilian in hospital, there was precious little to raise the pulse on a dreary afternoon in north London.

But while Arsenal’s frustrated fans chanted “Boring, Boring Chelsea” near the end, Blues boss Jose Mourinho will not care.

He extended his unbeaten record over Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to 13 matches as Chelsea, with five games left, protected their 10-point advantage over the north Londoners whose eight-match winning league run came to an end.

“I think boring is 10 years without the title,” Mourinho, whose side are the second-highest scorers in the Premier League this season, told reporters, referring to the last time Arsenal won the Premier League crown. “That’s very boring.”

Chelsea have 77 points from 33 games with third-placed Arsenal on 67. Last season’s champions Manchester City also have 67 but have played a game more, while Manchester United have 65.

While Chelsea look unshakeable at the top, United are suffering some jitters as they bid to secure a top four spot and a return to the Champions League after a season absent.

Heavyweight appetiser sets up Mayweather-Pacquiao …Wladimir joins Joe Louis in the record books

By Larry Fine NEW YORK, USA (Reuters) - Wladimir Klitschko joined Joe Louis in the record books with his title bout on Saturday but the event took a decided back seat to boxing’s latest ‘Fight of the Century’ -- Mayweather v Pacquiao.

Klitschko matched the legendary Louis by climbing into the ring for his record-tying 27th world heavyweight championship fight but the Ukrainian’s win against Bryant Jennings was a mere prelude to bigger things.

“This event with Wladimir Klitschko, heavyweight champion of the world returning to Madison Square Garden is the perfect hors d’oeuvre to what the main course will be next week,” Peter Nelson, HBO sports programming vice-president, told Reuters.

The biggest buzz among boxing notables gathered in the Big Apple centred on the long-awaited showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on May 2.

Even Klitschko understood his place in the boxing landscape when asked about feeling overshadowed by Saturday’s upcoming bout.

“Thankfully, it’s not the undercard,” Klitschko said with a laugh, acknowledging how he would have ranked in the billing for the extravaganza.

“Obviously, Jennings and Klitschko is not the mega-fight.”

The Las Vegas bout is expected to be

boxing’s richest and there was no shortage of comment.

Most favoured Mayweather, as do the oddsmakers.

Bernard Hopkins, a longtime middleweight champion who became the oldest world champion by taking the light-heavyweight crown at age 46 and won again at 49, expects the ageing combatants to wage a lively battle.

“The first six rounds, I believe you’re going to get your money’s worth,” he told Reuters. “Back and forth, before Mayweather is going to figure him out.”

But Hopkins expects Pacquiao will present a unique challenge.

“Look at Floyd’s wins in the last five or six fights. Did you see anything different in the legs? They were bigger opponents, but were they slower? Were they southpaw, were they energetic?” he rattled off.

“Were they on him like a swarm of wild bees after you disturbed the bees’ nest and they’re all over you? That is how Pacquiao fights.”

Promoter/manager Shelly Finkel said he thought the fight would be tougher than many think.

“I believe Mayweather will win because he’s just a better fighter,” Finkel said. “But this is not going to be easy. Pacquiao is coming to fight. He has to. His whole country depends on it.”

Kipchoge and Tufa win London Marathon KENYA’S Eliud Kipchoge won the men’s London Marathon, with Ethiopia’s Tigist Tufa victorious in the women’s race.

Kipchoge, the 5 000m world champion in 2003, finished five seconds in front of another Kenyan athlete Wilson Kipsang.

Britain’s Paula Radcliffe, the women’s record holder, finished the race in her last competitive London Marathon.

In the men’s wheelchair race, Britain’s six-time winner David Weir came second as he lost out in a sprint finish to American Joshua George.

Kipchoge and Kipsang were level with 600m of their race left before the former moved ahead to win the event for the first time, clocking two hours four minutes 42 seconds.

Fire in the belly ignites on time for England … England remain outsiders to win back the Ashes, but a rousing overseas victory on a docile pitch on the fifth day showed they are making progress

By George Dobell in Grenada IT is generally the nature of England results that, when they win they were perceived to be playing hopeless opposition and when they lose they are perceived to be even more hopeless. It is true that they will face tougher challenges this year than West Indies, tougher opposition whose batsmen are less reckless, whose bowlers are given some help from the pitches and whose best players are all keen and available for selection.

But to win any match in these conditions, to overcome the docility of the pitch in a series where the pitches on display overall have been poor, is a tremendous effort.

To score at the pace managed by Joe Root, easily the most impressive batsman in the match, and to coax any life from the surface as James Anderson did on day five is admirable.

For an entire team to sustain their effort over five days in this heat and go through periods when there was little encouragement suggests a strong and positive spirit within the dressing room. It reflects well on Alastair Cook and Peter Moores.

England have now won four Tests out of five. They have renewed their side with the addition of four or five fresh faces and they appear to have unearthed a couple of outstanding young players. They remain outsiders to win back the Ashes, but they are at least progressing.

England lost the last Test series they played in the Caribbean and before this match Root had never tasted Test victory outside England. This was England’s first overseas success since Kolkata in late 2012.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this new-look team is the emergence of fresh talent. With twin half-centuries in this match, Gary Ballance became the third quickest England player, in terms of innings, to 1,000 Test runs. Only Sir Len Hutton (16 innings)

and Herbert Sutcliffe (12) managed it more quickly than Ballance’s 17 innings. Ballance is now ninth on the all-time list from all nations.

If Root makes a fifty in the first innings at Barbados, he will have made seven fifty-plus scores in succession. Nobody from any nation has ever made eight.

While there is a grain of truth in the somewhat curmudgeonly suggestion that England have played some modest opposition on flat tracks in the last year, Root and Ballance, whose record includes a debut against Australia, are not the first to

encounter such circumstances and England are not such a good side that any success can be taken for granted.

Their careers will, no doubt, be defined by their results against Australia in particular but the confidence they take from these performances can only be of benefit. It was a point made by a relaxed Cook after the game.

“I genuinely believe they’re going to take England batting to a new level over the next 10 years or so,” he said. “I haven’t seen young players bat like that for England in terms of the way they go about their business and how good they are.”

The return to form of Cook is almost as encouraging. Not only did he make half centuries in each innings here, only the second time he has managed such a feat since the Colombo Test of April 2012, but he looked more fluent in attack and more secure in defence for some time. He has now made half-centuries in five of his last eight Test innings and looks somewhere near his best.

“It’s nice to be contributing,” he said.

“But until I get that three figure score it’ll still be there, no doubt about. But you’d take 130odd runs in a game for once out in an England win, no doubt.”

But on the fifth day the match was shaped

by Anderson’s brilliance with the second new ball and in the field. To claim three wickets for one run in any spell is impressive. To do so on a dead pitch and for those wickets to represent the cream of West Indies batting is exceptional. Anderson had been anonymous for much of this match. While he produced one wonderful delivery on the first morning, in general he was gentle of pace and undemanding of length.

Shaken out of his slumber by some frank comments from Peter Moores and his side’s reliance upon him, Anderson produced a vintage spell. He started by bouncing out Kraigg Brathwaite, an opening batsman with a century to his name,

despite the slow pitch before claiming Shiv Chanderpaul’s outside edge with one angled across him that demanded a stroke.

While Marlon Samuels might have left the delivery he edged, Anderson had earned the wicket through mixing his inswing and his outswing in previous overs. Samuels had no idea which way the ball was going.

There was more to come. The catch that accounted for Jermaine Blackwood, at full stretch and travelling fast high above Anderson’s head, was exceptional and the run-out of Jason Holder with a bullet-like direct hit from mid-off better still.

Just as it seemed Anderson might be coming to the end of the road as an international player, he produced a classic performance. It seems churlish in the light of such brilliance to question where such incisiveness was earlier in the match. In both innings, he was far better with the second new ball than the first and it seems inevitable that with a view to extending his Test career, the selectors will decide his international limited-overs career is now over. Even below his best, England have no one with the skills to replace him.

Some worries remain. Jonathan Trott suffered his third failure in four innings and has not convinced in the new role of opener.

England will have to decide whether to stick or twist ahead of the Barbados Test but Adam Lyth looks ready.

Now is not the time to worry about that.

England have earned the couple of days off they will have after arriving in Barbados on Sunday afternoon. Test victories overseas are scarce in this day and age. To have achieved one on a pitch designed to nullify them is an achievement that should not be underestimated.

They are not the finished package, they are not about to defeat South Africa or Australia, but from the rubble of the Sydney Test just over a year ago, they have made excellent progress. (ESPN Cricinfo)

Jamaican female sprinters steal the show PHILADELPHIA, United States (CMC) - Jamaica’s female relay teams failed to make a clean sweep but outclassed their American rivals in the USA vs the World relay series at the Penn Relays here on Saturday.

The 4x400m team of Christine Day, Patricia Hall, Anastacia Leroy and Stephenie-Ann McPherson sped to victory in a world-leading 3 minutes 26.58 seconds.

They posted an easy win over the USA team anchored by Dee Dee Trotter (3:28.42 minutes) and third-placed Australia (3:32.31 minutes).

Jamaica’s sprint quartet of Kerron Stewart, Sherone Simpson, Schillonie Calvert and Natasha Morrison clocked 43.70 seconds to beat the USA (43.79 seconds), with Nigeria third in (43.22 seconds) in the 4 x 100m event.

“I just came out here to do what I had to do and give my team a good start,” said Stewart.

“I still think I have more work to do and I am looking forward to the remainder of the season”.

However, the Jamaican women just missed a third win, beaten on the line in the 4x200m by one seven thousandths of a second after clocking the same 1 minute 31.98 seconds as the USA. The members of the team were Shericka Williams, Simpson, Calvert and Natasha Morrison.

The Jamaican female sprinters also used their participation in the Penn Relays as a warm-up for next weekend’s IAAF World Relay Championships in the Bahamas.

RCB seamers rout Delhi Pietersen hopes Daredevils for 95 in big win dented by Ryder … Royals rise to top after Kolkata washout ROYAL Challengers Bangalore’s fast bowlers dismantled Delhi Daredevils for 95 at Feroz Shah Kotla, setting up their eighth consecutive win over the hosts.

Virat Kohli went for the extra fast bowler in Varun Aaron following a finger injury to leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, and Daredevils never recovered from 39 for 4 after the India quick dismissed Yuvraj Singh and Angelo Mathews off successive balls.

Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore 99 for 0 (Gayle 62*) beat Delhi Daredevils 95 (Starc 3-20, Wiese 2-18, Aaron 2-24) by ten wickets.

Generating sharp pace and bounce, Mitchell Starc and Aaron were too much for the Daredevils top order, and the match soon descended into a no-contest as David Wiese’s variations provided little release on a two-paced pitch.

Daredevils went downhill right from the start. Their leading run-getter of the season Shreyas Iyer got a golden duck courtesy a Starc inswinger, although the leg-before decision was marginal at best. Chirs Gayle pulls for unbeaten 62.

Kedar Jadhav’s 33 dragged Daredevils to the joint-lowest score of the season so far but to sum up their night, he pulled a Harshal Patel half-tracker straight to deep midwicket.

Starc ran through the tail to end with 3 for 20 as Daredevils were dismissed in the 19th over with a run-out off an overthrow.

Openers Chris Gayle and Kohli took 10.3 overs to seal the win. Gayle took the lead smashing six fours and four sixes in his 62 off 40. Kohli was on 6 off 9 after six overs but got some strike and hit a few boundaries thereafter to end on 35 off 23.

Bowling first and strangling the opposition had worked for the second time on the trot for Royal Challengers after their win over Rajasthan Royals, and damningly, it was the sixth time Daredevils had been dismissed for a four during his sub-100 score, the most for any team in the IPL. Meanwhile, no play was possible at Eden Gardens after a heavy afternoon shower left the ground water-logged.

James smashes near two-decade-old meet record DES MOINES, Iowa (CMC) – Grenadian superstar Kirani James sent a stern warning to his rivals ahead of the imminent track and field season, by smashing a 19-year-old record in the 400 metres at the Drake Relays here last Friday night.

The Olympic gold medallist clocked a brilliant 44.22 seconds to stun a field that included nemesis and reigning World champion, American LaShawn Merritt, who could only manage fifth place in a modest 45.27.

James’s time – set in cold and windy conditions – was the fastest in the world this year and it eclipsed the meet record of 44.41 set by World record holder, the legendary American Michael Johnson, back in 1996.

“I’m very happy with my time. This

KEVIN Pietersen failed to deliver a big innings to impress England’s selectors as Surrey ran up 293-5 against Essex at The Oval..

Put in, Surrey looked set to dominate when they reached 175 for two with Sangakkara and Pietersen at the crease.

But the Essex bowlers stuck to their task well, making Pietersen toil through 31 overs for his 32 runs.

An evenly balanced day was tilted narrowly the home side’s way in the last hour as Davies, fresh from making 200 not out against Glamorgan in Cardiff last week, made 69 from 123 balls.

He added an unbroken 50 for the sixth wicket with captain Gary Wilson.

“This was a proper day of Championship cricket.

Surrey’s batsmen were made to work hard by the Essex bowlers but the home side will feel they had a pretty decent day.

“Rory Burns and Zafar Ansari set the platform after being put in by Essex and Burns will be annoyed that his hard work did not bring him a hundred.

“Kumar Sangakkara made a pleasing 52 on his home debut and Kevin Pietersen played some powerful shots in his 32.

“But Jesse Ryder swung the day (literally) back to the visitors when he dismissed Pietersen and Jason Roy in the space of three deliveries.

“Steven Davies looked in wonderful touch for his unbeaten 69 and he joined forces with Gary Wilson to take Surrey to stumps on 293-5.”

Essex coach Paul Grayson: “We thought the pitch might have done a little bit more but they worked hard for their runs. We’ve tried to be consistent with the ball and build pressure.

“Burns and Ansari played very well. We wanted to try to break that partnership early and expose Sanga and KP to the newish ball but those two young lads stuck at it.”

Surrey opener Rory Burns: “I was a little bit disappointed with myself after getting in on that wicket. Obviously it was pretty tricky early on and quite tough all the way through.

Bolt blasts Gay’s return to track and field KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) - Sprint sensation Usain Bolt has blasted Tyson Gay’s return to track and field saying the American should have been banned for life for doping.

“You have to drive fear into athletes, to make them think about the consequences of their actions,” declared Bolt, the six-time Olympic gold medallist.

“If they’re getting an easy penalty why would they care?”

Gay, the former 100m and 200m world champion, tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid at the U.S. Outdoor Championships in 2013.

However, he was surprisingly back in action last June, after what could have been a two-year ban was reduced because of his cooperation with U.S. anti-doping officials.

“It’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard,” said Bolt speaking to Runner’s World Magazine in an interview also

“The message should be: ‘If you cheat, you’re going to be kicked out of the sport”.

Gay has posted 100m times of 9.93, 10.04, 10.35 and 10.01 and 20.22 in the 200m since his return.

Ramdin wants ‘fiery’ Barbados pitch

WEST Indies captain Denesh Ramdin plans to request a “quick and fiery” pitch for the third Test against England in Barbados.

The West Indies went 1-0 down in the middle match of the series after a James Anderson-inspired England wrapped up a nine-wicket victory in Grenada.

It took plenty of hard work and skill, not least from the superb Anderson, for the tourists to triumph on a track that was just as flat, if not more so, than the one that kicked off the tour with a stalemate in Antigua.

But with the hosts now needing a result, Ramdin will be lobbying for something more traditionally Caribbean in flavour at the Kensington Oval.

“So far we got two good batting pitches that went down to last day. Hopefully the groundsman can give us something in Barbados that bounces and spins more, something quick and fiery,” he said.

“I guess both teams would have a good use for that because both teams have good fast bowlers.

“Hopefully when we get there I can speak to the guys and try to get something for the quick bowlers, rather than flat pitches.”

If Ramdin gets his wish, his side could load up on pacemen in a bid to blast England out.

Jerome Taylor missed this Test with a shoulder injury but will be fit to return, while there was good news on Jason Holder, who left the field after turning an ankle on the final afternoon.

It initially looked a nasty incident, but he could yet be fit for Barbados.

“It’s just a slight ligament sprain - he should be fine for next week,” Ramdin said. “A couple of sessions of ice with the physio and he should be all right. It looked worse on TV than it was, thank God, so he should be back.” (PA Sport)

GABF names squad for Suriname encounter ... It’s not going to be easy, but we’re preparing for a war, says Harris

THE Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) yesterday named its 20-man squad to face rivals Suriname this weekend, in heightening the National Basketball team’s preparation for the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championship, set for the BVI from June 9- 20.

The Guyanese will clash with their Dutch counterparts in the May 1-3 event which will be used by both countries to fine-tune their respective teams ahead of the regional showpiece, where they are drawn in Group ‘B’ of the 10-team tournament, along with Bermuda, Antigua and Barbuda and the Bahamas for the British Virgin Islands-hosted tournament.

According to GABF, the 20-man contingent will travel to Suriname on Friday, May 1 and will get into action later that evening.

Head coach Darcel Harris, speaking exclusively to Chronicle Sport yesterday, noted that the players will be rotated “based on how the games are played” in his attempt to come up with the right combination in an effort to come out of the series victorious.

The players named for game one are: Akeem Kanhai (Ravens), Dominic Vincente (Ravens), Dave Causway (Colts), Shelroy Thomas (Colts), Jason Squires (Pepsi Son-

ics), Ryan Gullen (Ravens), Royston Siland (Pacesetters), Jermaine Slater (Ravens), Nikolai Fraser (Guardians), Harold Adams (Royals) and Rudy James (Ravens).

“Those are the twelve players who will play on Friday, but we will see how the games go and make the adjustments as we go along,” Harris said.

Victory Valley Royals shooting guard Chris Williams, Pacesetters’ Randy Richardson and Stephan Gillis, along with Amelia’s Ward Jets’ Aminiki Archibald, Nets’ Fabian Johnson, Niko Fraser of the Colts and Kurt Elias are the reserve players.

With the team having to endure the almost seven-hour journey and playing the same night, Harris is of the view that it will provide them with the right pressure since it would not only test their mental toughness, but their ability to adapt to conditions not accustomed to.

Only last month Guyana played hosts to Bermuda in a three-game series; making a clean sweep of their opponents who are highly ranked among teams in the CBC. Asked about the composition of the team for Suriname, compared to the one against the Bermudans, Harris pointed out “there are a few new faces and we’ve added a few versatile players”.

for a war,” Harris noted, while the National coach added, “I heard that they have brought in some of their overseas players as well, but we’ll just see how they play and after the first game, we’ll make the adjustment, if needed.

Both of us are in the same group for the CBC and this will be a great chance to see how we match up against them. But we’re looking forward to a good series.”

Meanwhile, president of the GABF, Nigel Hinds, in a release said that “the challenge series is being initiated by the GABF to ensure that the Guyana National basketball team benefits from international exposure and also from playing in an understandably hostile environment abroad.”

The GABF head said, “The federation has expended personal funds and invested significantly in preparatory costs as they await sought-after funding from the Guyana Government, the Guyana Corporate Community and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) to ensure Guyana’s teams are well prepared for the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation Championships, this Championship being the ultimate basketball event for CARICOM territories.”

Hinds, assistant coach Marlon Rodrigues, statistician Dennis Clarke, manager Troy Green and referees Dexter Douglas and Rawle Toney are also part of the touring delegation.
