Regent St businessman found stabbed to death – in his Nandy Park backyard

By Leroy Smith FIFTY-six-year-old Farouk Ghanie of 97 Collingswood Avenue, Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara was found dead at the back of his yard with a suspected stab wound to his chest. There were no visible signs of forced entry to the man’s

house, and the police are not treating the death as a robbery.

According to information reaching the Guyana Chronicle, the man’s common-law wife paid a visit to the house after she tried calling his phone and did not get any response. When the woman showed up, she found that

the door to the man’s home was open, and after checking upstairs, she realised that he was not inside although his vehicles were still parked outside on the road.

After deciding to check

around the yard, she found him lying motionless on his back with the suspected stab wound in his chest. He was clad in the same clothing he wore to work on Wednesday.

Former US President ELECTIONS FLASHBACK First elections under proportional representation Jimmy Carter to lead observer team – Six more medium-term observers expected this week

CARTER Centre’s preliminary three-man team of election observers, currently in Guyana, will be joined by a team led by none other than former United States president Jimmy Carter in May, ahead of the upcoming polls.

“I look forward to leading our delegation to observe Guyana’s elections on May 11. The Carter Center has a long history in Guyana and great respect for the Guyanese people. These will be the fourth elections we have observed there since 1992, and we trust they will be peaceful and inspire hope for the future,” the former president said in a statement released by the Carter Centre yesterday.

Assistant Director from the Carter Centre’s Global Development Initiative, Mr Jason Calder, is heading the team presently in Guyana.

The other members include Mr Pedro Teixeira and Mr Bartek Lech.

Ahead of Carter’s arrival, an additional six medium-term observers, from nine countries, are expected to be in the country this week.

According to the Carter Centre, its observers will meet regularly with representatives of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), political party candidates, civil society organizations, the international community, and citizen election observers to assess electoral preparations and the pre-electoral environment, including election administration, campaigning, voter education, and other issues.

The full team is expected to be involved in assessing the voting, counting, and tabulation processes.

“With the Guyana mission, The Carter Center reaches an important milestone: its 100th election observation. The first took place in Panama in 1989 during a hotly contested race that the Center declared fraudulent. Since then, the Center has observed elections in 38 countries,” the Carter Centre said.

It added that, “The Carter Center’s election observation mission is conducted

in accordance with the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation and Code of Conduct that was commemorated at the United Nations in 2005 and has been endorsed by 49 election observation groups.

The Center assesses the electoral process based on Guyana’s national legal framework and its obligations for democratic elections contained in regional and international agreements.”

The Carter Center ’s fielding of an international election observation mission for Guyana’s May 11 elections was in response to an invitation of the Government of Guyana. Additionally, the Private Sector Commission (PSC), in the latter part of March, wrote to US Secretary of State John Kerry requesting his assistance to have the Carter Center field a full observer mission for the elections.

The move is part of its ongoing quest to ensure that the May 2015 elections will be free and fair.

Foreign observers, according to GECOM’s observer protocols, will be expected to adhere to more than 35 guidelines. In addition to the guidelines, the rights and privileges of accredited election observer groups were also outlined in the protocol. Similar rights and guidelines apply to local observer groups, which were detailed in a separate document seen by this newspaper. (Vanessa Narine)

ON October 31, 1964, Secretary of State for the Colonies Duncan Sandys announced that British Guiana’s electoral system would be proportional representation (PR), which was the system supported by the opposition PNC. General elections were subsequently held in British Guiana on 7 December 1964.

Parliamentary elections were held on December 7, 1964, and the PPP won 24 out of 53 seats in the House of Assembly. The PNC won 22 seats in the House of Assembly, and the United Force (UF) won seven seats in the House of Assembly.

This would be the last free elections held in what would eventually become Guyana until 1992.

The younger generation apart, they have also given women a fair chance to contribute to the development of Guyana and again he noted that their list of candidates shows that 37% of the persons listed are females.

While according to Dr. Ramsammy, when the APNU+AFC presented their list of candidates just recently on Nomination Day, there was only 25% of females included in their list, while the law requires that 33% of the candidates on any political party’s list of candidates must be women.

This, according to Dr.Ramsammy, is an offence under the law. Therefore, the APNU+AFC ought to have been disqualified from contesting the elections but he noted that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) gave them a chance to correct the deficiency.

He noted that the PPP/C consists of women with standards and quality, who are more than capable of contributing to the development of Guyana, and are not just women who were picked randomly.

On that note, Dr. Ramsammy disclosed that the PPP/C has shown its commitment to not only the young people and women, but also to the entire Guyanese population. Therefore, he stated, “we are calling on all Guyanese to walk with us as we lift the cup high in the air and march on to the upcoming General and Regional Elections.”

PPP condemns Opposition supporters’ vandalism, terrorism THE People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) has again vehemently condemned the actions of persons who have launched a campaign of vandalism and terrorism against the party’s efforts to engage the population in meaningful participation.

“The party would like to bring to the attention of the general public the wilful and malicious destruction of the PPP/C’s billboards, flags and posters, particularly in Region 3(West Demerara-Essequibo Islands).

“This behaviour has continued unabated, despite reports and repeated appeals to the relevant authorities to intervene. These acts of terrorism and vandalism can only benefit the Opposition alliance; and their participation, support, and/ or encouragement strikes at the core of our democracy.

“We shudder to think that these acts represent a return to the old days of terror and repression. Their attempts to instill

fear and the use of military- style intimidation have not gone unnoticed,” the party said in a statement.

Only recently, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Region 5 representative and Education Minister Priya Manickchand called out persons for their destructive behaviour, noting that campaign materials such as PPP/C flags, posters and billboards were completely destroyed, ripped down or tampered with throughout Region 5 (Mahaica-Berbice).

During the recent Linden rally, Minister within the Finance Ministry Bishop Juan Edghill expressed the same sentiments as he told the crowd that supporters of the PPP/C are a disciplined and well organised group and he is confident that his party supporters

will not retaliate against such behaviour.

At the same rally, President Donald Ramotar echoed the words of his ministers, noting that he has full confidence that his supporters will not take part in such activities. The President said that this sort of destruction will not diminish the party’s resolve and urged his supporters to vote solidly on May 11 for the PPP/C. “We in the PPP/C would like to encourage all right -thinking persons who put Guyana first, to resist these attempts and renounce this reign of terror on May 11th 2015,” the party urged.

Everyone’s life has a price tag THE landscape of Guyana is littered with human bodies from coast to coast and in the hinterland regions, through violent means. Apart from crimes of passion, most of these lives were snuffed out by murderous bandits who refuse to earn through hard work and sacrifice, preferring instead to wrest by force the wealth and properties accrued by others, even if they deprive the victims of their lives in the process.

However, the devastation they leave in their

wake can never be counted like cash.

If the breadwinner is taken, as well as the family wealth, then mortgages cannot be paid and homes and shelters are lost, children being sent to private schools, with the best of care, suddenly lose all the privileges a loving father provided, as well as many basic necessities for their survival. Mothers have to become breadwinners, and if they have no skills, qualifications or experience, the best they could hope for is working long, backbreak-

ing hours doing domestic chores for others, leaving their children virtual orphans, with no one being home when they return from school, leaving them open to the predators that predominate in society. Old parents are left hungry, with no one to pay their medical bills or provide for their needs; and the cycle of devastation of lives spirals downwards.

Today persons who never worked a day in their life, and their mothers, girlfriends, wives and other relatives live in

the most prestigious residential neighbourhoods, in fabulously appointed houses, drive the latest luxury vehicles, their children attend the best schools, and their lavish lifestyles make many of those who work and sacrifice to accumulate their wealth look like paupers; and they have achieved all of this with a gun through their own peculiar methods of wealth acquisition – robbing and killing the hard-working citizens of the land.

djlall Persaud was shot in his head in a hail of bullets and he seemed to have died instantly as a result of the massive injuries he sustained. The perpetrators absconded with a bag containing $1M. This was rush hour in Lombard Street, where traffic moves at a snail’s pace. He was murdered for his hardearned money while he was at the wheel of his vehicle on his way to work.

No one sought to pursue the murderous thieves, because heroes are scant in Guyana, and it was merely another episode of theft leading to cold-bloodedly

murder after all. None of the usual suspects – the professional protesters came out in their numbers like they normally do to protest when a thief and murderer is killed while committing criminal acts; because for them only the lives of thieves and murderers seem to have any value. And the price of the lives of victims? Well, for Bridjlall Persaud, his wife, their four young children, and all his dependents, that price was $1M; less or more for others, depending on how much the thieves manage to get from their forays.

AFC failing miserably to tell Berbicians how they will improve their lives

IMMEDIATELY after Valentine’s Day this year, the AFC’s Leaders began using various tactics in Berbice to prevent their Party from being transformed into ‘dead meat’ status.

They have been using these tactics both in their TV presentations and on their political platforms across Berbice, but to just a handful of curious onlookers who soon dissipated.

Their campaign strategy is devoid of any essence and they are failing miserably to tell Berbicians in a specific and detailed manner how they will make their lives better. So far, they have only succeeded in convincing Berbicians how they will make their own lives better, namely, by dreamily outlining what positions they are going to get after winning the 2015 Elections, and trying to convince them that by achieving those positions, they will then

make Berbicians’ lives better.

Their campaign strategies also comprise the following: - Attempting to convince Berbicians that the AFC+APNU coalition is Dr. Jagan’s vision and dream. They have now included Burnham in the equation, but I am yet to hear their APNU counterparts echoing this. Freddie Kissoon has now become a historian like Granger, but he is seeing things in a way that only Ramjattan can see them.

Freddie and his buddies in the AFC should at least study Jagan’s West on Trial if he so loves Cheddi Jagan. At least the PNC in APNU is not that stupid to talk about Burnham’s vision of a National Unity Government! They have realised the absurdity of such a claim.

- Attempting to convince Indians in Berbice that they are not Indians, but Guyanese. I am yet to hear the Afro-Guyanese in APNU de-

nying their African ancestry or ethnicity.

- Attempting to convince Indians that they are racial since they are no longer attending AFC public meetings, which clearly indicates that they will not vote for them in the upcoming General Elections. The bridegroom side has not seen this novel revelation and has never mentioned this as part of their campaign strategy, since they know that they have been rejected for what they have done to the bride’s people in the past. But the ‘dulahin’ is insisting that the ‘dulaha’ did no wrong. Love is indeed blind, but I have never heard that it is that stupid!

- Attempting to convince Indians that they should vote for Granger as President, since the Afro-Guyanese buy rice, greens and fish from the Indians. The AFC has seen trade as beneficial to Indians only. Again, APNU has nev-

er tried this as its campaign strategy, since it knows that this is fallacious reasoning.

It is only the ‘Indians’ in the AFC saying this.

- Attempting to convince Indians that they owe the propagation of their race to the Afro-Guyanese midwives who quelled the hollering of the Indian mothers in the hospitals and in so doing, saved their lives. APNU has not seen this since they know that people are being paid to do a job and they have a moral and legal obligation to do so professionally.

- Attempting to tell Indians in Berbice that Granger is a ‘gentleman’, since he went to school with Moses and Ramayya. I am yet to hear Granger saying that he and his bride crossed paths at primary school and looked at each other and fell in love at first sight. Moses and Ramayya overlooked this when they were accusing Granger

and the GDF of rigging the General Elections in Guyana.

- Attempting to convince Berbicians that the AFC will never close GuySuCo, yet insisting that aquaculture is the way forward. Rajendra Bissessar made this revelation on April 11th, less than a week ago. APNU’s Stanley Ming has made it clear that GuySuCo should be deleted from the economic landscape of Guyana. He said that Guyana can do better without GuySuCo but this is in direct contradiction to Granger’s ‘too big to fail’ postulation.

- Attempting to convince Indians that the 23 years under the PPP/C is far worse that the 28 years under the PNC dictatorship. I am wondering why Dr. Rodney lost his life in 1978 and what was the purpose of his assassination by the PNC. Every social and economic aspect of this country was destroyed under the PNC.

Under the PNC, we were reduced to a nation of beggars and we were so impoverished that we could not have afforded three square meals per day; children, mothers and adults were severely malnourished. Children went hungry to school. Smuggling of food from neighbouring countries was a thriving business. The infant mortality rate was extremely high.

Malnourishment-related diseases were prevalent. Even adults had ‘white-mouth’.

The ban of basic food items seriously affected the cultural and religious practices of Indians. Sourcing of food items became a criminal activity.

Houses were in disrepair, materials were unaffordable and even paint had to be smuggled from Suriname.

Moreover, even basic kitchen utensils such as cups and plates had to be repaired

‘Time to say goodbye to APNU+AFC, RIP’

“IT is time to say our final goodbyes to the APNU+AFC, rest in peace,” was the message delivered by PPP/C stalwart, Ms Gail Teixeira to the residents of Bel Air on Tuesday evening.

Alicia Takurdin, a youth and a member of the Bel Air Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) related that she has lived the progress and have been given many educational opportunities as she is now a student at the University of Guyana.

“As a young member of PYO, I experienced massive progress. Youths are empowered in numerous skills and the young people are the driving force of the future.” Takurdin also noted that under the PPP/C for the last 23 years the youths of Guyana were under firm leadership.

University of Guyana students, Takurdin noted, over the last few months were very traumatic and the Opposition have only mounted a blame game without assisting in any way. “What they have done was fill the minds of per-

sons with negatives but how can you care about the students if you cut the student loans which make tertiary education accessible.”

She said further that the PPP/C Government fought for and continued with the student loans so as to give all Guyanese the access to a tertiary education.

“The PPP/C has plans and projects for the continued progress for this country, young people come out on May 11 and vote for the PPP/C,” Takurdin urged.

Another youth within the PPP/C, Charles Ramson Jr., a lawyer by profession, spoke extensively on the attacks and destructive behaviour of the Opposition supporters.

He made specific mention of a group of persons who took to throwing potatoes at the PPP/C vehicle as they were announcing their public meetings in Sophia. He urged “for us to get the future we desire it is only through the PPP/C.” “We will get the chance to not vote for them (APNU+AFC) on May 11 to pay them back for cutting the budget,” Gail Teixei-

ra declared as she took the podium to educate her supporters on issues and achievements in the country.

MOST CRITICAL DAY She explained to the persons gathered that May 11 will be the most critical day in our history where you the people have the power in your hands to decide whether we will go forward and progress or go backwards with the APNU+AFC ( A Partnership of National Unity and Alliance for Change).

“We come to you with a track record, we are the party that fought for Independence and fought for the right for our people to vote and have free and fair elections,” she stressed.

The high-ranking PPP member urged that with this focus in mind, the May 11 polls represent a call for Guyanese to “do a reckoning” and weigh the improvements in their lives.

It is our right to accept or reject what is being said; but at the very least, the right to free speech must be respected.

This is why the hostility displayed by supporters of the APNU/AFC and the vandalising of campaign materials in support of the PPP/Civic must not be condoned, and must be condemned by all those who cherish the ideals of free and open speech.

Let us keep the campaign clean and civil. The

We must never allow a situation to develop where politicians are being harassed, beaten and in some cases, forced to run for their lives for daring to appear on Opposition platforms. The days when hooligan elements from the House of Israel and other rogue elements broke up political meetings with impunity must never be allowed to rear its ugly head again in this beautiful land.

Political meetings are

an integral part of our political culture. It is also an effective way of communicating with the electorate.

This form of communication was recognised over twenty three hundred years ago by the Greek philosopher Aristotle who, in his writings on politics, established that humans are political animals who are gifted with the faculty of reason and that politics and communication go hand in hand, because they are essential components of our human make-up.

As we approach voting day on May 11, let a million ideas bloom. In the final analysis, it is the Guyanese electorate who will have the last word on voting day.

Marriott symbol of enigma of our arrival

WE open a new chapter in our nation’s inspiring human story today with the grand, luscious opening of the Marriot hotel on the edge of that intimidating Atlantic Ocean.

Our society’s crème-dela-crème came together last night to rub shoulders at this lavish event. Opening the Marriott marks a stunning turning point in the history of our socio-economic development.

The Marriot puts Georgetown on the world map as a serious destination, as a place where the world could come to play and enjoy world class hospitality.

One stands astonished that some folks demean this brilliant moment, denouncing the Marriott’s opening because they want to see Guyana remain small and undeveloped.

The Marriott sits on a piece of real estate property that transforms not only Georgetown’s Atlantic skyline, but that also shows what’s possible: we took this piece of virtual waste land and turned it into a world class wonder. The beach area is a revelation to the nation, of what we could do with our extensive foreshore, how we could make the edge of the Atlantic and our vast rivers places of play, amusement and recreation.

The Marriot’s opening is an unfolding of our potential, a true, real coming into being of the immense Guyanese dream. Who would have thought Guyana would ever house a Marriott hotel? For those who travel abroad to luxury destinations, a Marriott in Georgetown always looked a distant impossibility.

Now it’s here, real.

The detractors who shout all manner of objections to its development kick against history. It’s astonishing so many

vocal folks kick against development in Guyana, slamming from the Marriot to the Amaila Falls hydro project to the expansion of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

They knock down every single development project in this country, and today they steam and scream and throw a massive tantrum because of the success of the Marriott.

Whatever teething problems we face in our efforts at pulling Guyana out of its socio-economic devastation of the 1980’s, and in building modern 21st century projects that benefit our nation, we tackle the journey with determination, courage and deep resolve.

Despite the rabble rousing to stop the Marriott’s progress, here we are today, Guyana owning a Marriott, operating a top class hospitality centre.

This act would become the catalyst for us really believing in ourselves, that when we set our minds to achieve our dreams, we could be confident we would do it.

The Marriott becomes a symbol to us, for who we are as a nation, that we could dream big and achieve great things. It’s a brilliant symbol, a shining star on our landscape. It lifts our vision and our consciousness. We no longer walk with our heads bowed under the weight of our mediocrity. We lift our heads high, confident, assured, progressive: we could do the big things we dream of, now, not tomorrow, but today.

With the Berbice Bridge, the Providence development, the Marriott, the Hope Canal, the Olympic swimming pool on the East Coast of Demerara, the international athletic track on the West Coast of Demerara, the four-lane East Bank Demerara road expan-

sion, with these and other projects, including several housing communities, Guyana leaps ahead. Our decade of continuous socio-economic growth is producing stunning results across the nation.

Of course, we’ve still got crucial repairs to carry out, for the decades of devastation under the dictatorship left a society falling apart in its wake, and we’re still re-aligning broken structural systems and repairing crucial foundation cornerstones.

But we’ve come a far way, so much so that today our nation celebrates the Marriott’s opening.

We ought to congratulate those who stared down the dreaded Opposition that we saw to this project, those who, with determination and persistence, saw through the whole thing. It must have been trying and a constant stress to shake off the narrow-minded folks who wanted it torn down before a stone was laid. Those who yet made sure the walls rise in defiance and in glory to the magnificently enterprising spirit inherent in the Guyanese soul, these we applaud today: they make us believe in ourselves.

Today, we launch the tallest building in the land. We declare to the world, with that landscape skyline symbol visible across the vast sweep of the Atlantic Ocean, whereby ships traversing the horizon could look at us seeing not just the seawalls and mangroves, but this tall straight sturdy structure pointing to the heavens, we declare our rise as a global people.

The Marriott causes a quiet leap of joy in our breasts, stirring our hearts with the euphoria of our arrival. We dreamed the impossible, and we made it happen, seeing our possibility coming alive before our eyes. To use a V S Naipaul thought, the enigma of our arrival, the exotic mystery of how we did this, of how we transformed Providence and remade D’Edward Village with the Berbice Bridge and redesigned our Atlantic Ocean skyline with the Marriott, leaves us feeling a sense of awe at our accomplishments.

Yet, humbly, with the confidence and resolve and deep determination of knowing that we could dream big and make it happen for our land, we plough on, cultivating this new spirit in our nation’s

psyche, lifting our people’s vision to look beyond what we see, to what’s possible, to what we could dream of and aspire to and create in our imagination.

This Marriott, this real, living, breathing, tall, elegant, modern world class building that redesigns our Altantic Ocean coastline, once laid a mere virtual dream as a drawing on a piece of paper, the dream a faint thing in its creator ’s imagination.

It took immense creative skill and that exotic human power of the mind and the will to bring it to reality, to convert that piece of waste land into the country’s most prime real estate asset. It took self-belief and serious work. It took imagining what Guyana could be, dreaming of what’s possible, and translating this into physical reality.

The Marriott showcases the immense imaginative will and creative power of the Guyanese nation, and it shall become the catalyst for us to aim high and dream big and set ourselves deep aspirations, fully confident that we would achieve what we set out to build.

INTERNATIONAL and local business tycoons, members of the diplomatic corps and a number of Government officials yesterday joined Head of State Donald Ramotar, and Ms. Brenda Durham, Senior Vice-President and Regional General Counsel for Marriott International Inc, for the historic opening of the Guyana Marriott Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown.

All stood to attention as the patriot pulse, “Dear Land of Guyana” reverberated, signalling the arrival of the Head of State, Donald Ramotar and also heralding the beginning of activities to mark the historic occasion, no doubt to be favourably recorded in the history books.

CRÈME DE LA CRÈME The President was greeted by Atlantic Hotel Inc (AHI), Chairman and Deputy Chairperson, Winston Brassington and Marcia Nadir-Sharma, along with Marriott Guyana General Manager, Robert Grisi, for a red carpet entrance for the festivities to follow.

The list of dignitaries reflected the crème de la crème of Guyanese business and social class, executive power, foreign relations and international partners.

An international media contingent also descended on the Georgetown Marriott to join their Guyana counterparts in reporting on the opening of the world-class facility, built and opened to the world despite an obstinate Opposition front.

Against the odds, those that joined the President for the historic occasion included: PPP/C prime ministerial candidate Elisabeth Harper; Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh; Ministers of Government, Irfaan Ali, Priya Manickchand, Dr Frank Anthony, Norman Whittaker, Juan Edghill, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Robeson Benn and Jenifer Westford.

Commissioner to Guyana, Dr Nicola Giles.

PRESIDENTIAL SEAL Beaming with what can only be interpreted as an appreciation of the occasion, the President, after exchanging a few brief pleasantries, made his way to unveil the plaque, his Presidential stamp of approval, which bears his Presidential Seal.

Next on the agenda was the symbolic ribbon- cutting ceremony.

For this, the President was joined by the Marriott Senior VP, Ms Durham, and both, armed with “Golden Scissors” in hand, declared open on the 16th Day of April, 2015 the “Guyana Marriott Hotel, Georgetown”.

Following a deserving round of applause in appreciation of the round of events marking the occasion, President Ramotar was “welcomed to the Guyana Marriott” by yet another beaming, beautiful Guyanese smile, which adorned the face of the first smartly uniformed young lady to accompany the President and guests to the entrance of the “Great Room” overlooking the lobby, for the toasts and symbolic handing over of the “Keys to the Marriott” before a chic reception and some chit-chat.

Transmission line One dead, two injured in confrontation repairs completed –GPL over grass fire

THE police yesterday reported that a probe is under way following the death of Patrick Boodie, 38, of Levi Dam, Angoys’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, which occurred around 17:20 hrs on April 15, 2015, at Angoy’s Avenue.

Calvin Charles, 44, the brother of Patrick Boodie, was involved in an argument with a man over a grass fire

that had spread from Calvin Charles’s land to the neighbouring premises.

However, the argument escalated into a confrontation among the man and his brother, who were armed with a cutlass and a handgun, and Calvin Charles and Patrick Boodie.

Calvin Charles was chopped to his head and shoulder, while Patrick Boo-

die was shot several times to his body and succumbed to his injuries.

Calvin Charles has been admitted to hospital.

Another man, Jason Nicholson, 28, of Levi Dam who was in the vicinity, was shot and injured to his right hand and has also been admitted to hospital.

The two suspects have not yet been arrested.

THE Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) yes terday said that following the accident on the night of April 12 ,when a Canter crashed into and broke a 69kV transmission line pole at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, the power company immediately undertook temporary remedial action to restore power to

all customers.

The transmission line is an integral part of the network that connects the Demerara and Berbice grids.

However, on April 15, the company replaced the damaged pole and ancillary materials. The replacement of this pole and other maintenance work on the same transmission line lasted from 08:30hrs until

He was in high praise, too, of the Guyanese flair brought to the edifice, right down to the tiniest detail, even in the carvings on the wall.

LOCAL CULTURE AND TANG Ariza, who has checked into the hotel as its first guest, has been with REPSOL in Guyana for the past four years, and jumped at the opportunity to stay at the Guyana Marriott as soon as it presented itself.

The international guest,

who checked in for a longterm stay during his tenure in Guyana, was also high in praise for the Guyana Marriott’s cuisine, which he reported was infused with the local culture and tang.

The events, however were not unaffected by the Political Opposition, which made good on its threat to disrupt the proceedings.

Ahead of the scheduled 10:00hrs start, members of the Opposition, including A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)’s Ronald Bulkan and Alliance For Change (AFC) General Secretary, David Patterson among others, began assembling outside of the nearby Pegasus Hotel.

DISTASTEFUL Barricades had been erected along the roadway outside of the Guyana Mar-

riott, with police ranks at every corner since Bulkan had publicly threatened to protest the event.

Minutes before the arrival of the Head of State, waiting guests were treated to a “distasteful display” as remarked by one international visitor that, “this cannot be good.”

Ranks of the Guyana Police Force that had positioned themselves along the perimeter of the hotel were scampering eastward toward the direction of the Pegasus Hotel by which time it was made clear. A group of placard-bearing protestors had broken through the police barricades making their way to the entrance of the hotel voicing various chants in opposition to the US$52M project.

Green claimed to be on a walkabout of the city following a high-tide warning, but questioned as to why he would need a placard to conduct such a walkabout, Bulkan made it clear, “We are here to protest the Marriott.”

Having put on a display for President Ramotar as he was escorted into the Marriott Courtyard, the protestors settled into a simmer and dallied, placards in hand, a while longer before slinking away.

Guests of the hotel have at their disposal the state –of- the- art fitness centre, again with the accompanying ambience of the Atlantic Ocean, Conference Rooms, Pool Facilities and a number of dining restaurants.

The 10-storey edifice sits on seven acres of prime ocean- front property, and was constructed primarily by Shanghai Construction Group (SCG).

Post-Mortem on Lethem police detainee confirms death by hanging A POST-Mortem done by Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh Wednesday on the body of 36-year-old Roy Bovell of Tabatinga, Lethem has given the cause of his death as asphyxiation due to hanging.

The late Roy Bovell was found hanging in the lockups at the Lethem Police Station on April 12, 2015.

He had been in custody in a matter that was under investigation.

The Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is investigating

Bovell’s death.

POLICE PRESSER A police press release has said that at about 08:00 hrs on April 12, 2015, the body of Roy Bovell of Tabatinga, Lethem, who was in custody at the Lethem Police Station, was found hanging from the grillwork of the station lock-ups.

The release added that when the police had visited the lock-ups at 06:15 hrs that day, Bovell was alive and well.

Roy Bovell was the only

prisoner in the lock-ups at the time. He had been arrested at Tabatinga at about 19:45 hrs on April 11, after he was found in possession of 60 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana).

PRECEDENT When 28-year-old Zaharadeen Razan of Cornelia Ida, WCD was found dead in the Parika Police Station lockups on February 25 last, the police OPR had similarly investigated the incident.

Police had reported that Razan had been alive but

was lying on the floor of the lock-ups when ranks had earlier visited the lock-ups.

After other prisoners in the lock-ups had been questioned, Razan had been taken for medical treatment at the Leonora Cottage Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival there.

It was noted that Razan had been arrested and taken into custody at about 21:10hrs on February 24, following a report of damage to property made against him.

Driver in Golden Grove road-fatality remanded TWENTY-four-year-old Devon Pydanna, facing an allegation of dangerous driving that resulted in the deaths of three of his friends on the Golden Grove Public Road, West Coast Berbice on March 30 last, was refused bail and remanded to prison by Magistrate Rhondel Weaver at the Blairmont Court, West Bank Berbice.

The defendant, of Lot 39 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, was not required to plead to the three counts of

dangerous driving with which he has been charged. The accuracy of the information in the police file was sworn to

Particulars of the charges are that on March 30, 2015, at Golden Grove Public Road, West Coast Berbice, Pydanna drove motor car PRR 1163 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the deaths of Tommy Thomas, Jeron Gregory James and Andrew Doris.

The accident occurred just after midnight, while the now deceased persons were seated in the trunk of a white Toyota Raum which had a total of nine occupants.

Prior to that tragic incident, the group of friends had been observed at a bikini and ballerz pool party which was held at ‘The Pool’, in Angoy’s Avenue, on the eastern fringe of New Amsterdam. At just after midnight, the crew had been seen going to the Castle Club at Chapel Street, before

leaving for the popular Te Amo night club at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice.

They were reportedly hungry, and had left the night spot in search of food; and it was during their return trip that the driver allegedly lost control of the rented vehicle.

The three persons were confirmed dead at the Fort Wellington Hospital.

Pydana is expected to appear before the Fort Wellington Magistrate on April 22.

Accused child rapist freed 11 years on – now-wed VC offers no evidence ALLEGED sexual offender Jagdeo Deodat was spared a jury trial after the virtual complainant testified that she is now happily married, and is the mother of a ninemonth-old boy.

The 45-year-old fisherman of Cromarty Farm, Corentyne, in East Berbice/ Region 6, faced two counts of rape, wherein it was alleged that during the period January 1 to December 31, 2004, he had sexually violated a female while she was only eight years old; and that he had engaging in penetrative sex of the child when she was just 13 years old, this latter act having been committed between January 1 and December 31, 2009.

The complainant, a petite woman now aged 19 and expecting her second child shortly, told Justice Brassington Reynolds and the mixed jury that she has been happily married for now 18 months.

Accordingly, she has submitted a statement to Corporal Dawn Chesney at the Police Outpost at the Berbice High Court indicating that she does not wish to give evidence against the accused, who is personally known to her.

“I have moved on with my life; I am married and have a child. No one forced me; I was not pressured in any way. My husband agreed

that I take this decision,” she declared.

Consequently, the Assistant Director of Public Prosecution, Ms Judith Mursaline, informed the court of the state’s wish not to offer evidence in the matter.

Prior to directing the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty, Justice Reynolds told the witness, “I wish that you continue to enjoy a happy life; I wish you get a boy.”

Turning to the man in the dock, the judge asked whether he had anything to say, to which he replied, “Thank you.”

“Mr. Deodat,” remarked Justice Reynolds, “the jury, following my direction, has returned a formal verdict of not guilty.

You are free to go; you are excused.”

Witness in detective murder Miner accused of attempting to commit felony case charged with perjury EIGHTEEN-year-old Azim Shivgobin, who allegedly committed wilful and corrupt perjury in order to procure the conviction of Salim Bacchus, alias Black Salim, has been charged with perjury.

He appeared before New Amsterdam Magistrate Charlyn Artiga, but was not required to plead to the charge, and was ordered to post $500,000 bail.

The case has been transferred to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court, where it is fixed for a May 15 report.

The charge against Shivgobin was instituted after he had appeared at the Berbice Assizes as the main prosecution witness in the case of the State versus

Salim Bacchus, his uncle, who was accused of murdering Police Detective Constable Jirbhand Diamanand, who had been assigned to the Narcotics Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department in Berbice.

Between December 6 and 17, 2012, during the preliminary inquiry into the death of the constable, the defendant had told the court that he had been in company with his uncle, Salim Bacchus, when the latter had walked up to the now deceased policeman who had been seated in a car, and, shortly afterwards, two gunshots had been fired.

However, during hearing of the case before Justice Franklyn Holder, the teenager alleged that he had given

evidence at the lower court, and, at the conclusion, he was told by the magistrate to add, alter or correct anything in the evidence.

However, he said, he had opted to neither correct, alter nor add anything, but had subsequently signed those documents declaring the contents to be true and correct.

But under questioning

by State Prosecutrix Ms Natasha Backer, Shivgobin said police had forced him to relay the events which led to the fatal incident.

Subsequent to his testimony, Shivgobin was arrested and had his charge instituted at the New Amsterdam Court.

He is yet to post bail.

A MINER, charged for attempting to commit a felony, was on Wednesday granted $50,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after pleading not guilty to the charge.

Jomo Jordan (no address given), denied the allegation that on April 12 at Jeep Landing, Kwakwani, Upper Berbice River, he attempted to commit a felony, that is to say he attempted to break and enter the home of Julius Shakespeare.

According to the prosecution, Shakespeare lives in a one- storey house with a verandah. On the night in question, Shakespeare was looking out the window

when the suspect was seen on the verandah trying to gain access through a door.

The court heard that since Jordan is known to Shakespeare, an alarm was raised, after which Jordan made good his escape by jumping off the verandah.

Bail was opposed on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence by Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru. He further objected that Jordan has a pending matter of indecent exposure and if granted bail, he may not return to court for trial.

Man threatens to shoot woman with unlicensed gun

– fined $100,000, jailed TWENTY-three-year-old labourer Joel Johnson appeared Tuesday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, wherein it was alleged that (1): On April 12, at Arakaka in the Barima-Waini Region, he had in his possession seven live rounds of .38 ammunition when he was not a licensed firearm holder; and (2): On the same day at Arakaka, he also had in his possession one .38 pistol when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.

The prosecution’s facts

are that Johnson is employed at a shop in Arakaka, and on the day in question, he visited a nearby shop to meet his female friend. After an argument had ensued between the two, Johnson pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot the woman.

The fearful woman then made a report to the police, and ranks visited the shop where the father of one works and unearthed the firearm and ammunition after a search was conducted.

The unrepresented Johnson related that the gun was given to him by his employer, Rhonda Samuels, for security purposes.

He alleged that the police had assaulted him during the process of searching, and had allegedly told him they would continue assaulting him if he did not surrender the gun.

He also contended that he had given his female friend one of the rounds, and she had given same to someone, who had then taken the ammunition to the police.

Johnson informed the court that he had previously faced an assault charge, but was not convicted for the offence.

The magistrate sentenced Johnson to two years’ imprisonment on each charge, which will run concurrently, and fined him $100,000.

Tout placed on $50,000 bail for simple larceny TWENTY-eight-year-old Orandy McClean, also known as ‘Limpy’, A tout of Brush Dam, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, appeared Tuesday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry charged with simple larceny.

Water Street, Georgetown, he stole one Samsung Galaxy S5 cellular phone valued $185,000, property of Nalinie Moonsammy.

Represented by Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Funga-fat, Mc Clean denied the charge; and his attorney told the court that Moonsammy had left her phone in the bus, and when she returned and

discovered it missing, she had accused him of stealing it.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru did not object to bail, and the magistrate put Mc Clean on $50,000 bail.

The matter has been transferred before Magistrate Annette Singh for report and fixtures on April 20.

Known convict remanded for assaulting two police officers KNOWN convict Kevon Alfred appeared Tuesday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer charges of assaulting two police officers.

Particulars of the offences he faced are (1): On February 20, at the Georgetown Magistrates Court, Avenue of Republic, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Police Constable Visram Ramjattan, a peace officer acting in the execution of his duty; and (2): That same day, at Georgetown Magistrates Court, he assaulted Police Constable Christopher Elvis, a peace officer acting in the execution of his duty.

The prosecutor explained that on the day in question, Alfred was sentenced to prison

by Magistrate Judy Latchman for unlawful possession of firearm.

Whilst being escorted by Constable Elvis, Alfred dealt a cuff to the said officer’s head.

He then spat on Constable Ramjattan who went to the assistance of Elvis.

Alfred pleaded guilty with explanation. He confirmed that he had been sentenced to prison on the day in question, and explained that an officer, whom he described as tall and black, had pulled his handcuff, causing him to hit himself.

He said he asked the officer why he had assaulted him, but the officer did not respond, so he defended himself by pelting a cuff to the officer.

He added that another officer pushed him down the chute, causing him to fall all the way to the bottom of the shoot.

A not-guilty plea was recorded for Alfred, although he was remanded to prison, and the matter was transferred before Magistrate Fabayo Azore for an April 17 trial.

Alfred had been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment by Magistrate Latchman on February 20 last.

Mason placed on $100,000 bail on break-and-enter charge E I G H T E E N - y e a r- o l d Edmando Adams, a mason of Lot 462 A, Third Field, Kaneville, Grove, East Bank Demerara, appeared Tuesday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry charged with a breakand-enter offence.

Particulars of the charge allege that on April 9 at Kaneville, he broke

and entered the dwelling place of Kerwin DeCunha with intent to commit a felony.

The prosecutor alleged that on the day in question, DeCunha secured his home and left to conduct business. On his return at about 21:10 hrs, he discovered a heavy breeze coming from his bedroom. Upon checking, he discovered six lou-

vre panes missing from his window, and Adams sitting in a corner of the room.

The police were called in Adams was arrested and charged.

He was on Tuesday granted $100,000 bail after denying the offence, and is scheduled to make his next court appearance before the Providence Magistrate yesterday.

Brazilian national charged for failing to declare excess foreign currency A BRAZILIAN national was on Wednesday granted $100,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for failing to declare excess money while departing Guyana.

Marisa Silva Cardosa, a housewife who resides at Ituni Street, Bel Air Park, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.

The charge against Cardosa stated that on December 4, 2014 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara, she failed to declare $11,000 USD, which she had in her possession, to an immigration officer.

The Brazilian woman was represented by attorney-at-law Mr. Mark Waldron, who requested that his

client be placed on her own recognisance. According to the lawyer, the Specially Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) has the money.

A SOCU prosecutor objected to self- bail and asked that the national be placed on substantial bail.

The prosecution’s request was upheld, and the matter was adjourned to April 23, 2015.

FORTY-eight-year-old Fizal Mohamed was on Tuesday, sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by Magistrate Annette Singh for fraudulent conversion.

He was found guilty of the charge,the details of which said that on October 13 at Shopping Plaza, South Ruimveldt Park, being solely entrusted by Anastacia James with an Acer laptop computer and a pair of gold

earrings together valued $227,000, he fraudulently converted same to his own use and benefit.

Mohamed,who was not represented by counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was refused bail when the matter was brought to the court for the first time.

The prosecution’s facts against him stated that Mohamed and James are known to each other and on that

occasion, he borrowed her laptop to off-load music.

James had also entrusted Mohamed with a pair of her earrings to clean and safely return to her, which he failed to do.

James subsequently made efforts to contact Mohamed, but her efforts were futile. The matter was then reported to the police and Mohamed was arrested and charged.

“THE MMU (Media Monitoring Unit) in its exercise of its monitoring mandate should not act independently of GECOM (Guyana Elections Commission),” according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon.

Addressing the contentions in the MMU’s first report, which covers the month of March, at his post- Cabinet press briefing on Wednesday, he added that the MMU is a creation of GECOM. “It is felt that their output must and needs to be drawn to GECOM’s attention prior to its publication,” he said.

Dr Luncheon added that the MMU’s function of media monitoring is “intricately caught up” in the functions of

the Commission, relative to its constitutional mandate.

“It is indeed intricately caught up in GECOM exercising its constitutional mandate,” he said.

The HPS also reiterated the Cabinet’s concerns over problematic “inferences” made by the MMU, relative to comments made by former president, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, at Babu John on March 8.

“In the case of this inference, Cabinet is contending that there were material facts that those statements alluded to were acknowledged as statements made by others originally for which the former President disclosed the likely response, were those statements to be made by a member of the governing party, he said

we will kick them out,” Dr Luncheon said.

At an event at Babu John last month, Dr Jagdeo, while stressing that there is no place for divisions in the Guyanese society along racial lines, pointed to an example of what was done during the 2011 General and Regional Elections.

He said: “They shout about racism of the PPP, but they practise racism. They whisper campaigns. In the last elections they went to some of the Afro- Guyanese villages and beat some drums at 6 O’clock in the morning and say let us throw out these coolie people. Get up, go out and vote, throw out the coolie people. That’s the kind of language they use. Anybody from our party who uses that sort of

language, we will kick them out. This is our approach.”

The MMU concluded that his comments were “racially divisive” – although the Unit did say that this was “probably” not intentional.

The Unit said: “Taking into consideration the historically and politically influenced divisions that persist up to now between Africans and East Indians in this country, and which are usually more pronounced during elections periods, the Unit came to the conclusion that the anecdotal illustration used by Dr. Jagdeo to make his point about racism, boomeranged disastrously,

since it came over as a calculated exploitation, for political purposes, of the known fears and insecurities of one section of the population: East Indians.

“It is within the foregoing context that the Unit verily concluded that the remarks made by Dr. Jagdeo were racially divisive[though] probably, not intentionally.”

Dr Luncheon said, “As a logical construct, inference about the same matter, could not be inconsistent, and if it were so, it would be illogical in this case, the statement that the former president made, was undisputedly (a) statement accredited to

others and repetition of the statement, a disclosure of how it would be treated had it been made by a member of the governing party, PPP/C, and the ejection from membership could hardly, in a logical way, lead to an inference that those remarks were racially divisive.”

The HPS disclosed that these concerns will be communicated to the GECOM Chairman, Dr Steve Surujbally who, in an invited comment, told the Guyana Chronicle that he would address those once he receives such correspondence. (Vanessa Narine)

‘Chetty’ found guilty of murder – probation report, sentencing set for May 14

By George Barclay A DEMERARA Assize jury yesterday found 74-yearold Donald Mopp, called ‘Chetty’ guilty of murdering 34-year-old Winsel Roger Edwards at a vulcanizing shop on February 15, 2013.

Some witnesses had said that Chetty who was a ‘limer’ at the Greenidge Vulcanizing Shop on the day in question had been exhibiting signs of drunkenness, and was walking unsteadily and on one occasion had to be guided to his seat.

Earlier that morning on that fateful day Chetty and Roger, now deceased, were hurling demeaning remarks at each other. Roger was calling ‘Chetty’ an old ‘anti-man’ while Chetty was referring to Roger as a ‘fagot’, who dressed with his underwear exposed.

A witness also said that

following the row between the men that morning, Chetty took a car and went away but returned later with the same vehicle that he had hired. He was walking unsteadily and had to be guided to a chair which he normally used when at the shop.

Soon after Roger was standing some distance away from him when Chetty moved quickly towards him, grabbed him from the back, and both of them got entangled with two tyres and fell to the ground. At this stage Roger shouted that Chetty had bored him.

Roger was taken to hospital and later died.

Following police investigations, Chetty was charged with murder.

Among other things, he told the police that he did not know what had happened.

However, one witness said that a knife blade was found on the ground and following

the injury to Roger, Chetty was seen with a knife handle which he threw onto a grassy lawn.

At his trial before Presiding Judge, Madame Roxanne George and a mixed jury, Chetty was represented

by Attorney-at-Law, Miss Deborah Kumar and he pleaded not guilty.

Miss Stacy Goodings prosecuted.

In an unsworn statement from the dock, the accused said that Roger was his good friend, who had done nothing to him, and therefore he had no reason to hurt him.

After the jury returned the unanimous verdict of guilty of murder, defence lawyer Kumar requested that a probation report on the accused should precede sentencing.

The judge agreed and the 14th of May was fixed for the presentation of the report and the passing of sentence.

Ghanies’ employees assembled in his yard yesterday

all appearances, Ghanie was about to feed his dogs when he was attacked on Wednesday evening, as the dog food was still untouched.

Persons in the area said they did not see or hear anything unusual on Wednesday evening, and there was no unusual barking from the dogs.

There are suspicions that the assailant might have been waiting for the businessman to arrive home, or he may have gone home with the person. However, his employees said that he is not someone who would

entertain guests at his home, once he is not familiar with them.

On Thursday morning while speaking with the media, the dead man’s brother, Fazil Hamid, said that he was not aware that his brother had any enemies. He did, however, state that it was reported to him that a former employee at his brother’s store had an argument with the man.

Police yesterday took away a crowbar from the scene of the crime and other items which they intend to dust for fingerprints. They

were also seen searching the perimeter of the premises for any clues that may aid in their investigations.

The police also spoke to persons in the community to see if any useful video footage was recorded by surveillance cameras.

The man’s body was removed from the scene by undertakers from the Memorial Gardens and Crematorium.

An opposition insider, who spoke to the Guyana Chronicle on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said it is the same case as with the financiers from the automobile industry which are now pushing national policies that would literally destroy the lives of thousands of Guyanese for selfish gains.

THE LCDS Under the LCDS, according to the former president, the PPP/C has proposed to preserve 99. 5 per cent of the nation’s immense forests in a sustainable manner that has already seen the Kingdom of Norway agreeing to pay US$250M to Guyana.

Under this plan, instead of a ban on logs as Granger has proposed, there can still be a sustainable increase in logging the remaining 0.5 per cent of forests.

This Jagdeo said, “will ensure more people have income,” but they, the coalesced A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC), “plan to ban logging; they plan to ban the export of logs.”

The former President asked rhetorically of the animated crowd, “You know what will happen to Region 10?”

According to Jagdeo, the tens of thousands of people whose lives depend on forestry from the region would no doubt be adversely affected.

He urged Lindeners to pay keen attention to the words being uttered by the

By Rebecca Ganesh PHASE One of the private search by family of the pilot of the missing Britten-Norman Islander which disappeared around midday on December 28 2014, has been completed, and Phase Two will commence shortly.

Speaking with the

Guyana Chronicle, Frank Singh, Managing Director of Rainforest Tours and fatherin- law of Captain Nicky Persaud, explained that the search which began in February of this year was expected to last one month, with an estimated budget of just over $6 million and a 20-man search team.

He noted that they are

optimistic about finding the aircraft and the new phase appears as though it will be fruitful.

Singh explained that some of the men on the search team have contracted malaria and the search was paused for a little while. “We have been getting assistance from a lot of persons and big companies like New GPC, Mattai’s Supermarket, Survival Supermarket, Starr Computers and also the Government of Guyana, among others. We decided to start the search because we met with the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Transport and they said they have exhausted all their resources,” Singh said.

“We are getting a tremendous response from the public and had we not received such assistance we could not have entered into phase two of this

Disfigured ex-convict charged in Berbice robbery spree

BERBICE sleuths have instituted eleven charges against Kwame Bhagwandin, who has been numbered among a group of persons accused of carrying out a robbery spree on victims spanning from East Bank Berbice to East Canje, where a surveillance camera caught the image of the suspect.

Bhangwandin appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Reliance Court, and was not required to plead to the charges instituted against him by Detective Corporal Darmendra Indarpaul.

Police Sergeant Phillip Sherrif objected to bail, citing the nature and gravity of the offence and the allegation that a firearm had been used in commission of the offences.

The prosecutor, in updating the court on the offences, said that attempted murder victim Surajeet Seepersaud remains hospitalised; the car has been recovered, and the defendant has been posi-

tively identified by two witnesses during an identification parade.

However, Attorney-atlaw Charrandas Persaud, who made a failed bid to secure bail for his client, said that while Bhagwandin had been previously charged, all the matters had been dismissed.

Pointing to his client, who is partially disfigured, the lawyer noted that while Bhagwandin had been a remand prisoner at the New Amsterdam Prison, he had suffered severe violence at the hands of inmates, and as a result cannot make a fist; cannot hold a spoon to feed himself; and is unable to hold anything even the size of a ball.

“He cannot have a gun or a cutlass in his possession...

talling $2.131M ● On April 2, at Number Two Village, being armed with a gun, he robbed Tessa Ramnaught of golden finger rings valued at $120,000. ● He stole from Melissa Benn, an employee of Caribbean Cuisine, a cellular phone and cash totalling $ 50,740, property of Budnarine Seenarine. ● At East Canefield, East Canje, he stole from Shanezza Singh a 22-carat gold band, 3 pairs of 12-carat earrings, a wallet, cash, an Iphone 6, a Samsung tablet, and wrist watches totalling $1.615,000. ● The defendant forcefully took from Devindra Samaroo cash and a cellular phone valued at $85,000. ● In addition, Imran Singh was robbed of his Samsung Note 2 cell phone, a Nokia note book, a Guess watch, and cash totalling $3.583M ● At New Area Housing Scheme, the defendant allegedly robbed Debin Singh Roopnarine of silver jewelry valued at $8000.

● On March 28, at Cumberland Village, East Canje, whilst being with others, he robbed Parbattie Bemaul of a gold chain and a mobile phone totalling $36,000. ● On that same date, he took from Candacy Bemaul a gold chain valued at $10,000.

Mohanie Bemaul was robbed of gold, silver, diamonds and cash totalling $2.340M. Meanwhile, Sherrif said, the defendant, along with others, whilst being armed with a gun and cutlasses, commenced their attack on fifty-year-old Surajeet Seepersaud at Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Berbice.

Seepersaud was having dinner when his family was attacked. One of the bandits had climbed to the upper flat of Seepersaud’s home and had commanded his victims to be quiet. However, Seepersaud confronted a bandit, who shot him before escaping.

The partially masked robbers then proceeded to

the nearby house, where Courts Manager Stanley McKenzie was parking his motor vehicle. The thieves demanded the vehicle at gunpoint, which they drove to East Canje, where the other robberies took place.

Following reports at Central and Reliance Police stations respectively, the police managed to access a surveillance recording in which Bhagwandin was identified.

Further, acting on information, sleuths swooped down at a popular New Amsterdam Hotel where the alleged bandit had been seen in a compromising position with a female member of the Neighbourhood Policing Group, who later revealed pertinent information.

Bhagwandin is expected to return to the Reliance Magistrate’s Court on April 24, where seven matters will be heard while the remaining cases are being transferred to the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court for hearing on May 6.

New PAHO/WHO network will monitor women and newborns in the Caribbean and Latin America Brasilia (PAHO/WHO) — ON average, approximately 16 women die every day in the Caribbean and Latin America from complications of pregnancy or childbirth, while 250 babies die each day before having reached 28 days of age.

To gather information on the causes of these deaths and contribute to policies for their prevention, the Pan American Health Organization/ World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) has launched the new CLAP Network of Latin American and Caribbean Centers for Maternal Surveillance and Research on Women’s and Neonatal Health.

“Maternal mortality has been reduced considerably in the last 20 years, but it continues to be unacceptably high, and the majority of its causes can be prevented or treated,” said Suzanne Serruya, Director of the Latin American Center for Perinatology, Women and Reproductive Health (CLAP/WRH) of PAHO/WHO, during the launch of the new network in Brasilia.

The new CLAP Network will play an important role in helping to further reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in the Region by collecting data on the causes of maternal and neonatal death as well as

on the causes of complications that leave women seriously affected following childbirth.

Maternal and newborn health are closely intertwined.

Approximately two out of three neonatal deaths occur during the first week of life, and the main causes include prematurity, congenital anomalies, asphyxia, sepsis and other infections.

Pablo Duran, regional advisor on perinatal health at CLAP/WHR, noted that since 1990 the number of newborns who die in the first month of life has declined 55% in the Region. “But we should make more efforts to prevent these deaths and conditions such as prematurity, retinopathy and asphyxia that can impact negatively on health and quality of life.”

“The CLAP Network will help assess the use and impact of cost-effective interventions and will monitor conditions that help reduce preventable deaths that affect the quality of life of newborns,” said Duran.

The CLAP Network builds on a collaborative effort in which 22 institutions in 12 Latin American countries began in 2012 to use a new component of the Perinatal Clinical History (HCP), which contains data on pregnant women and their children from the first prenatal visit

Imagine, the other day I stepped into a snackette at the junction of Light and Lamaha streets, and received the shock of my life. There was this school girl in full view of the public, sitting in her uniform holding hands with a young man who appeared to be older than she was.

I sat down and pretended to be having a telephone conversation just to see what was going on.

I spent forty-five minutes there, and during that time the two rubbed fingers, traced circles in their palms, stroked the upper arms, and blew kisses.

Here, in photo, is the young man caught sticking out his tongue at her suggestively, and she was visibly swooning in delight.

I kept wondering, ‘what on earth is going on here?!’ These kids paid no attention to onlookers, many of whom murmured their disgust at the young people’s actions.

I would not suggest that that snackette be closed down because the female proprietor just looked on in a carefree manner; but I am also suggesting that teachers at this school try to identify and counsel this young lady in a bid to help her become more responsible in future. And this young man should certainly be upbraided for causing a distraction in the young lady’s educational quest, and his own, not to mention.

I hope her parents deal with her accordingly, too.

Kishawn Doobay releases hot club single

TALENTED but somewhat secluded, Guyanese singer Kishawn Doobay is certainly chalking up notable points on the entertainment scene with the recent release of his reverberating club single, ‘Drop it down Low’, which he raves is the perfect song to set the girls on fire and have them “twirking in record time”.

In about a week’s time, this singer will release his music video to accompany the hit single.

WHO IS HE? Kishawn Doobay was born on May 13, 1989 to Carole Fowler and Audie Doobay. He has lived most of his life in East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, but has travelled the length and breadth of Guyana.

He describes his childhood experience as ‘awesome’, and says that while hanging with friends, he became involved in music. With nothing to do, he and his friends would gather at a popular liming spot, and it was then that he started to rap.

His friends heard him and thought he had a good voice, thus they encouraged him to get involved in music since they wanted to see him on television one day.

Growing up, he also recalled a number of drive-by shootings and robberies, but those incidents have helped him to gain some experience in life.

His mother, he said, has raised him to be the person he is today. He described her as a loving person who keeps him laughing all the time. She is also strict in her moments, which keeps him well grounded.

His father, on the other hand, was never around, but was more or less overprotective. Despite him being in another country, he loves to keep an eye on him.

Asked if there is anything in particular in his life he would want to do over, Doobay says if he had the chance he will do everything over the same way.

He is the only child for his parents, and is commonly known as “Kamouflage”. He presently lives at Bagotville, on the West Bank of Demerara.

While he has a number of tunes that have been recorded and are ready to be released, he is waiting on the opportune time to do so.

He is more or less a Hip Hop/R&B artiste who is still to create a stir in the

Kishawn Doobay local music industry.

This budding artiste is religious, having grown up in a Christian home and being made accustomed to listening to gospel music on Sunday mornings.

The only important date this jovial young man remembers is his birthday, which he spends with his family and friends as a

form of celebrating life.

Kishawn spends his spare time playing video games, basketball and, more importantly, writing rhythms for his tunes. He is optimistic that those tunes will “hit the top of the list”.

Kishawn is focused on success; he claims that failure is not a word in his vocabulary. As a young man who has a vision and aims high, he appreciates people who are loyal, trustworthy, honest and respectful; he noted that those are the qualities that would lead to a good life.

Kishawn is a somewhat shy individual who, despite having someone close to his heart, expresses his feelings in the form of art. He is normally a reticent individual, hence does not attract a plethora of friends.

The young man told Gtmemoirs that he is proud of himself and especially of the tracks he has produced. The tunes have gained him a lot of fans in different countries, and those friends have indicated their interest in working with him to advance his career.

He is not in a serious relationship as yet, he says, claiming that he got his heart broken one too many times…

“After my last relationship, I’m just sitting and looking on for a while before getting into something serious,” he confessed.

His favourite food is definitely roti and curry, while his favourite colour is blue in all shades.

Cup team was changed to fill race quota: coach Horn SOUTH Africa assistant coach Mike Horn has said he believes that the Proteas changed their side for the Cricket World Cup semi-final to meet quota requirements.

Renowned adventurer and motivational speaker Horn has been working with the Proteas since 2011 as a self-described ‘highperformance coach’ and was part of their World Cup party to provide inspiration as they chased the title.

Beaten at the semi-final stage by New Zealand in a thriller, controversy erupted after the team that beat Sri Lanka in the quarter-final stage was changed to include fast bowler Vernon Philander ahead of the in-form Kyle Abbott.

Philander’s selection raised the number of ‘players of colour’ – a term which encompasses black Africans, mixed-race people and those of Asian descent – to four, the same quota number that was previously implemented until it was abolished in 2007.

A report in South Africa’s Sunday Times the day after

the World Cup final said Philander’s selection came at the direction of the Cricket South Africa board, a claim that was denied by CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat.

“There was and is no political interference in our selections,” Lorgat said.

A further report by Netwerk24 claimed Lorgat had sent a text message to Proteas head coach Russell Domingo on the morning of the match to pick another ‘player of colour’.

“This is utter nonsense reporting with false allegations being made,” Lorgat said in a statement.

But Horn, speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Shanghai last night, countered that and said there was political interference that sapped the energy from the team.

“What actually happened was the (semi-final) team was the team that played against Sri Lanka,” Horn told Eyewitness News.

NEW DELHI, India - Ajinkya Rahane scored a patient fifty to lead Rajasthan Royals (RR) to a close six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to extend their unbeaten run in the 2015 Indian Premier League to four games at Visakhapatnam yesterday.

Chasing a modest target of 128, Rajasthan finished with 131-4 in 20 overs to record their fourth win of the season.

Brazil new CBF boss attacks modernisation law

By Andrew Downie RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Marco Polo Del Nero took over as president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) yesterday and immediately hit out at legislation designed to reform Brazil’s failing national game and hugely indebted clubs.

Del Nero, 74, replaced 82-year-old Jose Maria Marin and promised to usher in a new period of “transparency, openness and lots of debate”.

He added, however, that a decree passed last month aimed at tackling clubs’ astronomical debts “violates the federal constitution, invades clubs’ and federations’ administration and promotes division within Brazilian football”.

Under the legislation, which was implemented in March but has still to be approved by Congress, Brazilian clubs are to be given 20 years to pay off their massive debts.

They could also face relegation if they do not pay their players on time and adopt more transparent management procedures.

The move was supported by players, many of whom are

frequently not paid on time.

The country’s top 23 sides have a collective debt of 3.72 billion Brazilian reais (0.83 billion pounds), almost half of that in taxes owed to the government, according to a study by Itau BBA, a Brazilian investment bank.

But the CBF is pressuring Congress to amend the bill before it becomes law, alleging that by threatening a loss of points to clubs and potentially putting those who do not participate in administration, it is putting their survival at risk.

At a short signing ceremony, Del Nero played up the history of Brazilian football while ignoring the setbacks that culminated in the humiliating 7-1 loss to Germany in last year’s World Cup semi-final.

The national side, which has bounced back since that loss to record eight wins in eight games under new coach Dunga “makes all Brazilians proud,” Del Nero told dignitaries in Rio. He said Brazil’s national, regional and state championships were the most hotly contested in the world and called the Brazilian Cup, with 80 participating teams “the most democratic tournament on the planet”.

Local track stars to feature at Synthetic Track Opening today

By Rawle Toney THE Synthetic Track and Field Facility at Leonora, an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Class II Certified venue, will be officially opened today with a gala ceremony from 10:00hrs.

President Donald Ramotar will commission the facility; the first of its kind in Guyana and some of Guyana’s best athletes will be on show according to the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG).

AAG president Aubrey Hutson, speaking to Chronicle Sport yesterday, said that today’s event will start after the formal speeches, with the women’s 100m, triple jump, 100m men’s, long jump, 1500m male, and the male and female 400m in that order.

“We tried to make sure that everyone is featured,” according to the AAG president Hutson who added, “for example, we’ll have Cleveland Forde in the 1500m and he’s more known for his dominance in the 5 000m. Cassey George will run in the 800 though that’s not her event exactly and Jason Yaw in the 400m. We want them all on show actually.”

“I’m comfortable,” Hutson pointed out, speaking of the facility, “the track looks good but we honestly just can’t wait to see the opening come and go so that we can plan our events for it.”

The ceremony today will hear speeches from

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony, Director of Sport Neil Kumar, representatives from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) – since it also holds a football pitch – and representatives from the AAG. Kumar had described today’s event as “historical” during a recent interview with this publication, adding, “We are proud to know that we could have built this world class state-of-the-art track, where everything was done professionally.”

With the facility, Guyana can now bid to host regional and international track and field events; something Hutson had stated the AAG is anxious about.

While today is not a public event, only seeing attendance by schools on the West Demerara area, athletics fans will have a chance when the AAG hosts its Senior Championships on May 7.

The over US$5M facility, apart from the football pitch and track, has two stands, each with a capacity to seat 1 500 people.

The athletics track, according to the Government of Guyana, adds to a growing list of investment initiatives in sports in Guyana – the Guyana National Stadium at Providence; the Albion Sports Complex, refurbished and fitted with floodlights, the Aquatic Centre in Liliendaal, the Squash Court and Lawn Tennis Court.

Essequibo stage fightback against Demerara … Berbice beat National U-17

By Calvin Roberts HAVING seen left-arm spinner Keanu Harry restrict the powerful Demerara batting lineup on the opening day with his seven-wicket haul, Essequibo batsmen fought back gallantly at the end of the second day of their Guyana Cricket Board/Raj Singh Insurance Under-19 Inter-county three-day fixture yesterday.

Playing at the Everest Cricket Club ground where they resumed the day on 1 without loss in reply to Demerara’s 261, Essequibo posted 226 before being bowled out in the dying stages of the penultimate day yesterday, thanks to Parmesh Parsotam 59 and 46 from Sachin Persaud.

Medium pacer Shurfane Rutherford bowled with pace and good rhythm to end with 3 for 45, backed by Malcolm Hubbard and Akshaya Persaud who took 2 wickets each for 13 and 48 runs respectively for Demerara, who were handed a five-run penalty following a fielding infringement by Rutherford.

At the Wales Community Centre ground, Berbice defeated the National Under-17 by 10 wickets in a one-sided affair, to

earn a well-deserved rest day on today’s final day.

At Camp Road, Essequibo began the day with both Satesh Latchana and Nathan Persaud yet to score and saw them post 19 on the board before Latchana was run-out by Vivian Albert, whose return to wicketkeeper Tevin Imloch found Latchana short in his attempt to steal a cheeky single to point.

Parsotam and Nathan Persaud added 59 for the second wicket, with Parsotam hitting Rutherford for three fours in two overs, followed by two more fours in one over, before rain stopped play for 10 minutes at 66 for 1, with Parsotam on 25 and Nathan Persaud 26.

A well-judged catch by Imloch low down to his left, off Rutherford, accounted for Nathan Persaud 31 (90 balls, 2x4) when play resumed after the first of two rain breaks, with Essequibo 71 for 2 and Parsotam unbeaten on 25. Both Parsotam and Williams were dismissed at 117 for 4, with Parsotam going to Travis Persaud’s catch at slip off Akshaya Persaud, who returned the favour in the same position to account for Williams (10) off a Vivian Albert delivery in the following over.

Parsotam faced 105 balls during his 134-minute sojourn at the wicket, hitting 10 fours. At their demise, Demerara must have felt they would wrap up Essequibo’s batting lineup quickly.

DCC to host fundraiser for Adrian Azeez … Player struck by ball in February LAST February, during a Georgetown Cricket Associationorganised second division cricket match between Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and the University of Guyana, young Adrian Azeez Jr was struck on the head by a cricket ball, following which he suffered a fractured skull and required surgery.

Such an operation was undertaken at the Georgetown Public Hospital Inc. and was successful, but the extent of his injuries has kept Azeez away from school during his recuperation period which is going well.

To that extent, the Lance Gibbs Street-based DCC which is also known as the ‘Home of the Legends’, will on Sunday April 19 host a Special T20 cricket match between DCC and a Georgetown Select XI from 19:00hrs, with names of both teams to be released shortly by the host club.

The event is being used to raise funds in aid of Adrian Azeez Jr’s family, as a means of offsetting the cost of medical treatment and home schooling he has to undergo, since he will be away from school for an extended period.

Barbecue, food and drinks will be on sale during the match, while there will be musical entertainment for those who will make the effort to attend and support this worthy and timely venture.

As is recognised by the club, the incident was an unfortunate one and in order to minimise a recurrence of such an incident or one similar in nature, DCC has raised the perimeter fence by three feet and is presently erecting a mesh barrier six feet in height on top of the fence.

In addition to that, the club, which has produced such Test cricketers as Clive Lloyd, Lance Gibbs, Roger Harper and Travis Dowlin along with several national players in Keith Semple, Derwin Christian, Trevon Griffith and Christopher Barnwell just to name a few, is exploring the expansion of its Insurance coverage to include injury to passers-by and damage to property/vehicles parked in the streets abutting the club.

An invitation is extended to all sister clubs, well-wishers, friends, cricket enthusiasts and members of the public to attend the event, as their presence and kind support will go a long way to this worthy cause.

Travis Drakes, the score was pushed to 143 for 4 before rain stopped play at 14:04hrs and when the contest resumed, Hubbard and his skipper Travis Persaud bowled eight consecutive maiden overs, accounting for Drakes who was caught by Travis Persaud at mid-off, when he looked to hit Hubbard over the top at 161 for 5.

That became 207 for 9, with the dismissals of Harry (2), Sachin Persaud 46 (141 mins, 126 balls, 3x4; 1x6), Looknauth Chinkoo (0) and Akini Adams 17 (3x4), as Rutherford and Basdeo engaged in a disciplined bowling spell with the second new ball, before Leyland Cadogan 13 (3x4) and Jewmal Hartman 6* added 19 for the final wicket When the action continues today, Demerara who has a lead of 35 runs will start their second innings looking for quick runs, with the aim of securing an outright win.

At Wales, Berbice resumed the day on 136 for 6, a lead of 42 with four

Guinness Greatest of De Streets set for Berbice and Linden

WITH Georgetown, the West Coast and East Coast of Demerara already participating, the Guinness Greatest of De Streets football tournament now heads to the Ancient County of Berbice and Linden.

Berbice will see 16 teams compete in their ‘piece of the pie’ which kicks off tonight in New Amsterdam (NA) at the old Ferry tarmac and will conclude on Sunday.

The competing teams are: We Them Boys, Rosignol, Canje, Corriverton, Unruly Gang, East Bank Gunners, Fiesta Boys, Courtland Black Sharks, New Amsterdam (NA) Kings, Manchester Boys, Big Ballers, Courtland Stars, Lochaber Boys, Spartans, Five Yard and UpTop Ballers.

In the opening game tonight, in Berbice, We Them Boys match skills with Canje from 18:00hrs while NA Kings tackle Lochaber Boys from 18:30hrs.

The third matchup pits East Bank Gunners against Fiesta Boys from 19:00hrs and

Courtland Stars against UpTop Ballers from 19:30hrs.

At 20:00hrs, Rosignol will oppose Corriverton while Manchester Boys will tackle Big Ballers from 20:30hrs.

The final two matchups will pit Unruly Gang against Courtland Black Sharks from 21:00hrs and Spartans against Five Yard from 21:30hrs.

Linden, hosting their fourth installation of the nationwide event, will host their competition from April 22 to May 5, coinciding with the Town’s anniversary celebration, featuring 32 teams, playing at two venues – Mackenzie Car Park and the Silver City Hard Court.

The winners of both tournaments will pocket $300 000 and secondthrough-fourth will gain $150 000, $100 000 and $75 000 respectively.

Region needs special treatment, says Webb NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) – CONCACAF president Jeff Webb says the severe economic challenges faced by the Caribbean mean the region should be given preferential treatment in the international football community.

He was speaking at the opening of the CONCACAF Ordinary Congress here yesterday, to delegates which included Sepp Blatter, the incumbent president of football’s world governing body, FIFA. “The Caribbean, the heart and soul of CONCACAF, has to be designed and gazetted as a special area for football in the world of football,” Webb contended.

“There is no other area in the world with such economic depression than the Caribbean. There’s no other part of the world that when you look at funding for football for a region, there is no other part of the world that has such an economic disadvantage.”

He continued: “The smallest single budgets in the entire world for national associations are in the Caribbean. We’re special but in that regard we’re special for the wrong reason.”

Webb, who will be reelected unopposed for his first full term as head of the confederation, said lack of finances was a major hurdle faced by all national associations in the region in their daily administration of the game.

However, he stressed it was a test that Caribbean associations needed to deal with.

“And that, my friend, must be one of the challenges that we must overcome, because lack of resources, whether financial or human resources is the reality that we live in today,” said Webb, also a FIFA vice-president.

“That’s the reality of Caribbean football. That’s the reality that I, as a president of a national association, you as presidents of national organisations live with every single day. Creating that inspiration, that hope, that opportunity for individuals that we would like to but not having necessarily the resources to provide.”

Webb took over the helm of CONCACAF in 2012 in the wake of the infamous cash-for-votes scandal which resulted in the resignation of former FIFA strongman, Trinidadian Jack Warner.

Ballance century puts England in control (REUTERS) - Gary Ballance’s fourth Test century made up for his miserable World Cup as he spearheaded England’s victory bid on the fourth day of the first Test against West Indies in Antigua yesterday.

The tourists set West Indies an improbable target of 438 to win by declaring on 333 for seven and the hosts were 98 for two at the close, having lost Darren Bravo for 32 to a stunning catch by Chris Jordan and Kraigg Brathwaite for five.

Opener Devon Smith finished unbeaten on 59, his sixth Test half-century, while Marlon Samuels was two not out.

Ballance shrugged aside a disappointing 50-over World Cup in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year and a first-innings failure in Antigua by compiling a painstaking 122 in 250 balls.

The left-hander fist-pumped the air in delight and waved his bat to the crowd after going to three figures with a straight four off spinner Sulieman Benn.

Ballance almost seemed incapable of hitting the ball off the square as he and his team struggled at the World Cup but, after a slow and hesitant start, he grew in confidence in England’s second innings in Antigua.

He was given good support by Jos Buttler (59 not out), Joe Root (59) and Ben Stokes (35) as the tourists made the West Indian bowlers toil.
