Teixeira accuses Ramjattan of ‘attempting to whitewash’ history --stops short of calling him delusional

LEADER of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Khemraj Ramjattan, has come in for serious flack for defending his Party’s alliance with A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). What seems to be his undoing is his basing his defence on the argument that persons currently in the Party are not the ones who participated in such unsavoury practices in the past as the rigging of elections. “I think that Mr Ramjattan attempting to whitewash the history of Guyana and trying to make it into ethnic politics is extremely and extraordinarily deceptive,” said Presidential Adviser on Governance and political stalwart, Ms Gail Teixeira in an interview yesterday. Responding to the assertions, which were made public via an article in the Stabroek News, headlined ‘No alliance could have been end of AFC – Ramjattan says it’s time to move beyond PNC history’, Ms Teixeira went on to say that Ramjattan just might be suffering from a bout of amnesia. “He seems to be suffering from amnesia or from some senior-citizen moments, because he went on to say that those persons in the APNU now were not associated with rigging…there are key persons in the APNU now who were around in those days,” Teixeira said. She was most emphatic that try as he might, the AFC leader just cannot wish away the past. “It is particularly deceptive of Mr. Ramjattan to try to wish away the past,” she said. NAMING NAMES Teixeira took her reproof of the AFC Leader a step further by naming names, including the names of those who hold top positions within APNU, such as Brigadier (rt’d) David Granger, and Messrs Robert Corbin, Joseph Harmon, Carl Greenidge and Basil Williams. “Of course, everyone focuses on Granger’s role in the 1973 rigged elections. One has to also remember that Mr Granger was also the security adviser to President

people who are presently in the APNU; presently in the leadership of the PNC, who were all associated and knowledgeable of that era and of what went on.” Teixeira made it clear that history speaks for itself, and these are facts that the Guyanese people have not forgotten. “The rigging of elections affected all Guyanese; the right to choose a Government was stolen from us, and by persons who wanted to hold power at any cost,” she said.

Ms Gail Teixeira Hoyte, right up to 1992, and as security advisor, he would have been knowledgeable of the rigging of elections

who knew what went on in 1973, 1980 and 1995. “Mr Greenidge, who was Minister of Finance and

SELLING POINT Noting that while it is accepted that Ramjattan’s “deceptive” commentary is in line with his attempt to sell the APNU-AFC alliance, Teixeira said that Guyanese are not that easily deceived. “I am sure Ramjattan has to do that (sell the Alliance); he is obliged to do that,” she said, adding: “But people have a long memory; I am sure many people might have been shocked to read the article today, where he is wishing away the past.”

‘I think that Mr Ramjattan attempting to whitewash the history of Guyana and trying to make it into ethnic politics is extremely and extraordinarily deceptive... He seems to be suffering from amnesia or from some senior-citizen moments, because he went on to say that those persons in the APNU now were not associated with rigging…’ –- Presidential Adviser on Governance, Ms Gail Teixeira in 1980 and 1985, and the considerations leading up to 1992. One can say that Mr Granger is very much a person of that era,” Texeira said, adding: “So is Mr. Corbin; he was chief organiser; chief cook and bottle washer for a lot of the mischief in the rigged elections of 1973 and 1985.” As to Harmon, Greenidge and Williams, Teixeira said: “Mr Harmon was a member of the army, a senior member

a member of the leadership and Executive of the People’s National Congress (PNC) and Cabinet is from that era… Even Mr Basil Williams, not as a cabinet member, but certainly a leader in the PNC.” Stressing that the foregoing persons are but a few of those who were associated with the very unsavoury practices of the past, Teixeira said: “I am just naming five

She said, too, that while Guyanese ought not to live in the past, by the same token they ought not to forget the past. “While we must not live in the past, we mustn’t forget the past, lest we be forced to repeat it. It (Ramjattan’s deception) is not something the Guyanese people will fall for,” she said. Teixeira added that the years of the PNC’s regime have been

Mr Khemraj recorded in the annals of history as the years of the “most undemocratic rule” experienced by the Guyanese people. GENTLEMEN’S AGREEMENT On the question of the “gentlemen’s agreement” characterising the Cummingsburg Accord, which sealed the APNU-AFC Alliance, the Presidential Adviser pointed to Mr Granger’s history with such understandings, in that she sought to remind that in line with inclusive governance and powersharing, the Opposition Leader was given certain powers, following the 2001 Constitutional Reform process, relative to the appointment of constitutional office holders. “It was essentially a gentlemen’s agreement,” Teixeira said by way of explaining that the crafters of the Constitution and the consensus from the Constitutional Reform process left it to the Opposition Leader to cooperate with the Executive to have the appointments made. What happened instead, she said, was that Mr Granger’s inaction on several of these issues delayed the appointments. “It was never anticipated that the Leader of the Oppo-

Ramjattan sition would withhold compliance with the Constitution; it was never conceived that there would be non-compliance,” she said, adding that if this was anticipated certain mechanism would have been put in place by the crafters of the Constitution. CHALLENGES FOR ALLIANCE The Alliance, since its Valentine’s Day consummation, has been plagued by several challenges. R e c e n t l y, d a y s a f t e r former AFC General Secr e t a r y, S i x t u s E d w a r d s resigned from the party, another member publicly issued his resignation and has alleged that the recent decision to form a coalition with APNU was one made by a ‘gang of five’, without the authorisation of its membership. Attorney-at-Law Balwant Persaud, speaking at a press conference recently, has vowed to do everything in his power to ensure that the AFC does not come to power, and has in fact now endorsed the People’s Progressive Party / Civic (PPP/C) as the Party for which he will now campaign. APNU also has been faced with its own share of in-house battles, including resignations, among other issues.

Couple remanded on cocaine-trafficking charge

A COUPLE, who were recently “busted” by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Friday, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for trafficking cocaine. TWENTY-nine-yearold business owner Shameeza Bacchus and 38year- old Ron Reid appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Be-

harry, charged with being in possession 70 grams of cocaine, for the purpose of trafficking. Both defendants denied the allegation, and their lawyer Peter Hugh requested reasonable bail for them. Hugh in his address to the court explained that Raid assists Bacchus in her business enterprise. However the house that the drug was found is occupied by

several occupants and on the alleged date CID ranks entered the home and found the cocaine in a sink. CANU Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah informed the court that the defendants are in a commonlaw relationship, and on March 2, ranks came knocking at their door, when the female defendant appeared. Massiah told the court

that when the officers enquired for Reid,Bacchus tried to engage them in conversation, thereby delaying them in gaining access to the house. The court heard that a rank heard a sudden running of water inside the house and when the officer stormed in, theyfound Reid standing in front of a sink, with four cocaine pellets inside.

Both were taken under caution to CID headquarters, where the substance was weighed and tested in their presence and confirmed to be 70 gramms of the illicit drug. They were arrested and charged. Defence counsel for Bacchus however questioned her involvement, stating that only one person was in close proximity to the cocaine and she

could not have had any knowledge that it was concealed in the sink. The prosecutor strongly objected to the duo being allowed their pretrial liberty, contending that the reason raised by defence counsel is not ground for bail to be granted. Bail was refused and the case was transferred to City Magistrate Judy Latchman for March 11.

St George’s Cathedral windows vandalised by unruly students during Phagwah celebrations By Raymon Cummings TWO of the stained glass windows on the eastern side of the historic St George’s Cathedral at Company Path, Georgetown, were vandalised during Phagwah celebrations when students of

the St George’s Secondary School got out of control. What seemed to have started as a simple cultural observance at the school at about 13:00hrs escalated to a missile throwing incident with students filling bottles with water and hurling them from the school compound

located north east of the historical building in the direction of the building. Pleads from the school administration and the Verger at the cathedral were ignored and the police had to be called to intervene. The lone policeman who responded was unable to immediately contain the situation as the students continued to hurdle the improvised missiles, resulting in damage to two of the stained glass windows and one of the newly-installed windows on the eastern side of the cathedral. The head teacher and teachers present during the incident seemed reluctant to

intervene. The damage seen on the priceless stained glass windows showed the protective mesh on the outer part being damaged and parts of the glass missing. The St George’s Cathedral has been working with the school which is managed by the Ministry of Education to assist in providing meals for the students who are less fortunate. The vandalism came as a shock to members of the church and the public who were in the area and they expressed disgust at the behaviour of the students.

That curious juxtaposition of religious festivals THAT much-anticipated time of year is here again. The time of new beginnings and intense reflection and self-assessment occasioned by a set of three major religious festivals in curious juxtaposition. Today is the Hindu Phagwah. Less than a month ago we cele-

brated the Muslim Youman-Nabi. And in just a few weeks, it will be the Christian Easter. This conjunction of celebratory happenings seems to tell us that amid the frolic and feasting, it would be remiss of us not to spend a few quiet moments reflecting on our reason for living, on the role we are

to play on this great stage created by someone bigger than you and I. For the Hindus, Phagwah marks the end of a year and the beginning of a new one. Today we will revel amid sparkling primary colours, symbolic of spring and luscious flowers, we will indulge in curries and sweet meats

and visit relatives and friends. Early this morning, the Hindus would have celebrated with a special puja; and all in all it would be the most colourful day of the year, promoting the brotherhood of all. Then there is Youman-Nabi. Another national holiday we cele-

brated a few weeks ago, celebrating the birth of Mohammad and his retreat for several days to a cave in Mount Hera where he was given the first revelation of the Holy Koran by Allah. On that day Muslims visited their masjids and partook of sweet meats and visited relatives and friends. And not too long from now the Christians will celebrate Easter, the resurrection of their Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, which tells of forgiveness of their sins and of their becoming children of God.

What a wonderful story this trio of religious vignettes tells. And it could be a fitting prelude to that important day coming up in early May. Youman Nabi, Phagwah and Easter are all national holidays in Guyana, and this has allowed our full participation in each other’s festival, with our unique multiplicity of faiths mixing one with the other, fashioning a striking weave of tolerance and understanding and of caring for each other. From us at the Guyana Chronicle, Happy Phagwah to all!

Why the PPP/C will win on May 11th, 2015 THE PPP/C is the only multi-racial and multi-religious party for economic and social development in Guyana. It’s the party of Cheddi and Janet Jagan. Today, it’s the party led by Donald Ramotar and Elisabeth Harper. Donald Ramotar is an honest, experienced and hardworking Guyanese leader who represents all the people. Elisabeth Harper, our future prime minister, is an honest, hard working and credible woman. This dynamic duo is ready to go! The PPP/C has a political machinery that is well oiled and ready to roll. This party of the people has a sound economic policy of job and wealth creation necessary for the continued, sustained development of Guyana. The PNC- APNU-AFC coalition politicians have thrown a lot of stumbling blocks in the way of parliament on the road to sound economic development. They are not builders, but

wreckers. The PNC- APNU-AFC coalition politicians have opposed the Amaila Falls Hydro-project, the Specialty Hospital, the Cheddi Jagan airport expansion and the anti-moneylaundering Bill. They are an anti-development crew. These power-hungry politicians only oppose for opposing sake. They do not have the interest of the nation at heart. They are not interested in nation building, but power grabbing, with no vision of their own. A new PPP/C majority government will be experienced, willing and able to continue with the task of nation building. The Opposition PNC-APNU-AFC coalition is unfit to lead; its leaders are not credible, and they cannot be trusted. Many of them were Army strongmen in the PNC era, and have blood on their hands. It was during their time in the military that Dr. Walter Rodney was assassinated. It was also during their time in the

Army when the Ballot-Box Martyrs were gunned down in Berbice, and it was during their military rule when one Army man was in charge of 35 civilians. How can we trust these military politicians to rule Guyana again? How can we trust Granger’s military buddies in PNC-APNU to be our rulers? Forget all the promises the APNU-PNC leaders made with the AFC. How can

Guyanese trust APNU-PNCAFC with promises made in the formation of a coalition? How can we forget the PNC and Burnham’s joint coalition with UF’s Peter D’Aguiar? The PNC kicked out D’Aguiar and messed up the country politically and economically. Do we want to relive the days of the PNC dictatorship of fear and starvation? How can Moses Nagamootoo trust David Granger and his military

buddies in APNU? There is a possibility that Moses and the AFC could be kicked out of the coalition. Moses is sleeping with the enemy, and has lost all credibility with the Guyanese people. This love affair that began on Valentine’s Day will end in divorce just after their election defeat. At first, Moses claimed that he would not leave the P.P.P., the party he helped to build.

The AFC, his new party, has claimed that they will not join with APNU. Moses Nagamootoo and Ramjattan broke all their promises. How can the Guyanese people trust the AFC? The Ramotar-Harper team is full of promise, hope and credibility. This winning team will lead the PPP/C to victory come May 11, 2015. PATRICK JOHNSON

Development ‘very much in evidence’ in Region 9 I RECENTLY visited a number of hinterland communities in Region Nine, including the village of Aishalton in the Deep South. The pace of development in the communities visited is very much in evidence. The time taken to travel from Lethem to Aishalton by trail is con-

siderably reduced, thanks to regular maintenance works done by the regional administration. Most of the communities now have lights powered by diesel generators or solar panels. These villages have taken on a new appearance, with the several infrastructural works undertaken by the

PPP/C administration. New nursery, primary and secondary schools, health centres and huts, learning resource centres and recreational facilities have literally changed the landscape in almost all Amerindian and hinterland communities. Region Nine has seen the construction of

several new secondary schools, including one at Aishalton, Annai and Sand Creek, with dormitory facilities to cater for students from the outlying villages. Our Amerindian children are doing much better in school today; the performance gap between hinterland schools and

Leave our wives and children out of politics! THE Alliance for Change continues to show respect for the Guyanese people, especially the young people and our women. Not so long ago, it was heavily publicised and criticised in the media with regards to prejudicial, discriminatory and ad hominem statements made against a female doctor attached to the New Amsterdam Hospital by AFC’s Executive member and Attorney-at-law, Charrandass Persaud. He later apologised, but continued in a more subtle manner to make disparaging remarks about this woman; so I can only conclude that his apology was hypocritical and deceitful, and was made under the duress of public opinion. Lo and behold! On Tuesday March 3, he attacked the wife of the Attorney-General. He accused the AG of being a ‘chatree’ (kshatriya) and then said that he married a Muslim woman, whom he implied is a woman of a lower caste. In Islam, there is no caste system; and all women are equal. But these are the leaders the AFC have; they can only attack women! What does the AG’s wife have to do with the AFC’s campaign message? What indecency is the AG guilty of? What crime has the AG’s wife committed? She is an honourable and respectful woman! Leave our wives and children out of politics! Then, a few days ago, he posed for a ‘friendly’ photograph with two PYO members who were doing some work in his residential area in Canje, but obscenely gesticulated

with his middle finger behind the backs of these two young people. This man is publicly vulgar and disrespectful. This is most disrespectful to the youths of our country, and it is a disgrace for a senior executive member of the AFC/ APNU to resort to such election campaign tactics. I have always said on my programme that these people are intellectually and morally bankrupt. I wonder what the ‘great moralist’, Professor Daizal Samad has to say about this. Is this the people of high integrity he spoke so loftily of? I told Samad in one of my letters that he was in the wrong place looking for people of dignity and high moral values, but he can try to change them! On the AFC’s programme in Berbice, ‘Alliance on the Move’ on DTV 8, he would normally beg callers into the programme to be civil, “since he has some of his young friends watching the programme.” Yet he can publicly show his middle finger to young people who belong to another political party. What a hypocrite! Then on February 28, 2015, Dr Veerasammy Ramayya, a man who claims on many of the AFC’s programmes, ‘Alliance on the Move’, that he respects women and would normally call them ‘behen’ and sister and ‘mataji’ (mother), made the most derogatory statement ever on a TV programme when he insulted the Indian mothers of this country by angrily telling them, “When you

does be hollering in the hospital to make babies, people can hear you till on the road; and it is the Black nurses who does be looking after you.” Does this man who claims to be a spiritualist and a moralist, a man who claims to be a devout Hindu, and a man of great charity have any respect for the mothers, sisters and daughters of the Indians of this country? Is he so desperate to sell the AFC/APNU coalition, that he can be allowed to make such disparaging and racist remarks about Indian women? On that same programme, he also made racist remarks against the people of Black Bush Polder. What are the women organisations in this country doing about this? What are the religious organisations doing about this? What is the legal fraternity doing about this? What is the Ethnic Relations Commission doing about this? Dr Ramayya and Charrandass Persaud have no right to be on the political platform, or hold any high office in this country. And the AFC/ APNU, if they are serious about ‘CHANGE’, then they should distance themselves from these charlatans! A couple days ago, Ramayya was found to be libellous to Zulfikar Mustapha and had to pay $250,000 in damages and was directed by the judge to make a public apology within seven days. But I am sure that the AFC leaders will continue to disrespect the Guyanese people, especially the Indians, since the Indians have now rejected

Development ‘very much in ... From Page 6 those in the coast have been greatly reduced. Residents are highly appreciative of the several development projects undertaken by the PPP/C regime, despite attempts by the opposition parties to block funding for several other interventions including land titling, solar panels and the development of information and communication technology. It is clear that there has been a significant reduc-

tion in the developmental gap between Amerindian communities and the rest of the country thanks to vastly improved information and communication infrastructure and the massive infrastructural works undertaken by the PPP/C administration. Cell-phones have now become commonplace in several communities, which makes it much easier for information sharing and processing. The days when Amerindians were fooled

and taken for granted are over, and no amount of Opposition propaganda can erase the fact that the quality of life among the Amerindian and hinterland communities are today much better than under the previous PNC regime. True enough, there are still many challenges to overcome, but it is not the power to achieve, but the will to conquer that matters. HYDAR ALLY

them. Hell hath no fury like a politician scorned! I am calling on all Berbicians and by extension all Guyanese, to reject people like Ramayya and Charrandass Persaud and their leaders who are bent on bringing this Nation to its knees, even if it means to disrespect our women and our youths and to cause racial strife and disharmony. Their quest is vengeance and power so beware the Ides of May! HASEEF YUSUF Ex-AFC Member/ Councillor

Moses has the ‘low-down’, David APNU/AFC Presidential candidate, Mr. David Granger is disdainfully not offering any apology for the rigging of 1968, 1974, 1980 and 1985 general elections by the PNC Government, because he is not aware of any such skullduggery by the PNC. He wants to see the facts. Ironically, the facts are not far from his reach. His running mate, Moses Nagamottoo in the 1980 general elections stood like a colossus against the PNC big guns for three nights on the call-in programme, “Action Line” , detailing all the facts and figures of the PNC rigging of the 1968, 1974, and the 1980 elections. For three nights straight, Moses stood alone for the PPP, taking on the likes of skillful propagandists like Kit Nascimento et al of the PNC, and humbling them in the process. Moses had oral and visual evidence of the role of the Army in the tampering with ballot boxes, the dead voting, the living voting multiple times, and even horses and mules voting overseas. It was all done by irrefutable facts and figures presented by Moses. Here we now have Moses’ presidential candidate, David Granger, requiring proof of PNC’s rigging of elections. Someone referred to the two as being similar to the biblical prophets. Both, however, seem to be reading from different scriptures on the PNC rigging of elections. But then again, the Good Book does warn us that we should beware of false prophets. REGGIE BHAGWANDIN

DUBBED AS ‘COLD BLOODED’ KILLERS IN NEESA GOPAUL’S TRIAL…

Mother, lover found

GUILTY

– mother sentenced to 106 years – lover gets 96 years By Geeta Rampersaud

A HIGH Court jury in the Neesa Gopaul murder trial delivered a unanimous guilty verdict yesterday to the mother of the teen, Bibi Shareema Gopaul, and her ex-lover, Jarvis ‘Barry’ Small, after an approximate three-hour consultation among the 12-member panel. Bibi Shareema Gopaul was sentenced to 106 years, and Barry Small to 96 years by Justice Navindra Singh. The much-anticipated ruling led to the sentencing of the two accused, dubbed as “cold-blooded killers” during the trial, five years after the brutal murder of the 16-yearold Queen’s College student. Gopaul’s decomposed and seemingly ‘headless’ body was found stuffed in a suitcase in a creek along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway on October 2, 2010. The suitcase was anchored in a creek at the Emerald Tower Resort with several dumbbells. Small was sentenced to 60 years for the offence of murder, with 10 years added for premeditation; another 10 years for brutality; an additional 10 years because the victim was a child; and finally another six years for domestic violence. Gopaul was also sen-

tenced to 60 years for the capital offence; 10 years for premeditation; 10 years because it was a child; 10 years for brutality; another 10 years because it is her daughter and she did not protect her; and six years for domestic violence.

LOUD GASP As the judge announced the sentence there was a loud gasp from the spectators, followed by frenzied chatter until the police called for silence. The judge told Gopaul that while she may not live to serve the time, he hoped that Turn to page 9 ►

wherever she goes she may live it out. Small was represented by a team of Attorneys-at-Law, comprising Glen Hanoman, Bernard De Santos SC, Lyndon Amsterdam and Zanna Frank, while Gopaul was represented by Attorney-at-Law George Thomas. The case was presented by State Prosecutors Diana Kaulesar, Mercedes Thompson and Stacy Gooding. Both convicts were asked if they had anything to say as to why the sentence should not be passed. Small responded quickly, “Yes, I did not have a fair trial in this court.” He added that prejudicial evidence was entered in the case, and the judgment was for political purpose. Small said there was no evidence to convict him or anyone of this murder, and that the judge was being unfair because he is a politician by nature. State Prosecutor Kaulesar responded that the evidence in the case speaks for itself and the jury had made their decision. Before sentencing, Small charged that Justice Singh’s ruling was politically motivated but the judge stated emphatically, “I don’t have any political ambitions.” PROBATION REPORT REQUEST One of Small’s lawyers, Mr. Glenn Hanoman, requested a probation report before sentencing. He told the Court that his client is a 30-year-old married man

An unrepentant but dejected Jarvis ‘Barry’ Small makes his way out of the courtroom yesterday at the end of the trial

with two children. Bibi Gopaul was also asked if she had anything to say, and she also responded in the affirmative. She said, “Sir, when I was locked up, the reporters (were) putting things in the paper. They spoke a lot of ill things.” Gopaul added that she was never interviewed, and claimed that the jury could have done more in her favour. According to Gopaul, the case lacked evidence. She said: “I know a lot more about the case; there is a lot more to that. I thought I would have justice here.” On that note, Justice Singh responded, “You did.” Gopaul’s defence counsel said it was the first conflict with the law for his 42-yearold client, and that she was in the process of rehabilitation. Meanwhile, the defence counsel gave an oral notice of appeal in the matter.

NO REMORSE However, neither of the convicts was seen to show remorse when the sentence was handed down. And neither Small nor Gopaul was seen to cry openly when the verdict and sentence were passed. While walking out of the courtroom, however, Small seemed a bit teary-eyed. The two, on leaving the courtroom, took separate exit routes, and were escorted to their respective court lockups. Relatives of both convicts were present in the courtroom, and Small’s wife, Marcelline Basdeo-Small, was seen crying outside of the courtroom. SUSPENSE Yesterday, the atmosphere in the High Court was tangibly charged with suspense, as relatives of the two convicts and members of the general public awaited the

highly-anticipated verdict in the murder trial of the teen. As the courtroom was opened, persons rushed through the corridors into the courtroom fighting their way to a seat. More benches were brought into the courtroom to accommodate the additional influx of persons eager to hear the verdict. The corridor outside the courtroom was swarming with even more persons. In addition, other lawyers who were not part of the defence and prosecution positioned themselves to hear the decision. Some lawyers who could not manage to get a seat were standing in the corner along with police and High Court staffers, some of whom were seen fetching their chairs to the courtroom to hear the verdict for themselves. There was a lot of chitchat as everyone waited in anticipation for the arrival of the jurors to give their

Justice Navindra Singh

decisions. Before the members of the jury set out to make their decision, the summation was done in the morning session by the judge. Based on the evidence provided by the prosecution and the defence, the case was summed-up and the jury was advised by the judge in keeping with the law. He advised the jury to consider all the evidence in the matter and not to speculate. Justice Singh added that the State had to prove all the elements of the charge. GRUESOME DISCOVERY On October 2, 2010, the headless remains of Neesa was discovered at a location along the Soesdyke/Linden

Highway, tucked inside a suitcase that was partially submerged in a creek. A rope was wrapped around the suitcase and dumbbells were attached at one end, apparently in an effort to keep the body under water. In addition to the body, a passport bearing the name Neesa Lalita Gopaul was also found. The teenager was reported missing just days before the gruesome discovery was made. Subsequent to the discovery of the body, Bibi Gopaul and her ex-paramour, Small, were arrested and charged for the murder. People who had gathered outside of the court loudly expressed their satisfaction with the verdict that was handed down.

This has been made possible through the Women’s Agro-processors Development Network (WADN), which received 12 laptop computers and printers from the Rural Enterprise and Agricultural Development Project (READ). The donation is part of a $12.6 million project designed to help the 11 groups under WADN with packaging of their products; provide computer training to members; computer access and Internet service; and the development of a website to market their goods. Some $3 million of the $12.6 million projects has been injected into a revolving fund to help the women entrepreneurs to support and expand their businesses. WADN has also signed an agreement with Sterling Products Limited to assist in distribution of its members’ products; improve market potential of members’ prod-

ucts by providing competitive pricing and matching quality; provide advice with respect to managing their finances; technical assistance on quality management and formulation; and procurement of primary and secondary materials where necessary. Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary George Jarvis urged the women to put the systems to good use, noting that the Internet

opens a door of knowledge, and they should use it to uplift themselves. He promised to provide more systems to WADN as the need arises. Eleven of the computers will go towards the women groups, while the others will be used by the women’s agro-processors body. EMPOWERMENT The beneficiaries thanked WADN and the

READ Project for investing in their development, contending that knowledge is power, and readily available information through the Internet provides the empowerment. The laptops were distributed after members of the groups under WADN recently completed training on how to use a computer and techniques in browsing the Internet. Established in 2011,

WADN consists of 11women groups drawn from Regions One, Two, Six and Nine, which are involved in agro-processing. The groups produce a variety of products including cassava farine, cassava bread, peanut butter, vegetable and fruit-based sauces, achars, coconut oil, bottled water, coco sticks and soaps. Prior to the establishment of WADN, the groups operated as individual entities, independent of each other, and in some cases unknowing to each other, given the geography of Guyana. However, as part of a Making Markets Work Programme, it was recognised that greater efficiencies and synergies could be realised by bringing these groups together since they all share similar objectives, challenges and operational issues. WAND is registered as a Friendly Society, and its objectives include developing market linkages locally and overseas; building capacity of member groups; and providing support to the communities in which member groups are located. Through READ, poor rural households in six Guyanese regions are benefiting

from better access to financial services and training in marketing and enterprise development – all designed to enable them to overcome poverty. The overall goal of the project is to improve the social and economic conditions of these households, particularly for small-scale producers and vulnerable groups such as women and indigenous peoples. Implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, the project is supported by both loan and grant- financing from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). An estimated 20,800 people, almost half of them women, benefit directly from project activities. READ targets farmers who grow non-traditional crops and have up to five acres under cultivation, and operators of micro-enterprises and small-scale businesses employing up to five permanent workers. It also focuses on rural households that are headed by women, households that include unemployed or underemployed young people, and Amerindian communities.

Pandit charged with – promises to campaign ‘as hard’ as he can embezzling $G1.6M RAMSAMMY TO DETRACTORS...

‘Watch out! I am coming back!’ AGRICULTURE Minister, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, has put to rest assertions that he will not be returning to the political arena due to his ill health with an emphatic, “I am coming back.” In an invited comment, he told the Guyana Chronicle that he plans to hit the campaign trail in support of the ruling Party’s re-election to office. “I will be home shortly and I will campaign as hard as I can for the reelection of Donald Ramotar and the PPP/C. For those who are speculating that I will not return to campaign, I am sorry I will have to disappoint them,” he said. According to him, the speculations over his return to the political arena

Leslie Ramsammy

reflect a “mischievous attempt” to misinform the Guyanese public. “I want to state categorically that I am a part

of the PPP, and I am and will be campaigning vigorously for the re-election of Donald Ramotar as President and PPP/C for a majority Government,” he reiterated. Ramsammy has served with the ruling party since 1997 and prior to being appointed as Agriculture Minister, served as Health Minister for about a decade – years of service that earned him the distinction for being one of the longest serving officials in that capacity. In the last few weeks he has been overseas seeking medical attention for an existing health condition. “The report of my demise, and my early departure is grossly exaggerated,” he concluded.

A SIXTY -four-year-old pandit found himself bef o re C h i e f M a g i s t r a t e Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Thursday, charged with embezzling over $1.6M. Pandit Krishnanlall Persaud denied the allegation that between July 1 and July 31, being entrusted with USD$8000, property of Navlankar Nohar, he fraudulently converted same to his own use and benefit. Persaud’s lawyer, Mr. Jerome Khan told that court that his client resides at Area ‘M’ Diamond, East Bank Demerara. Khan not-

ed that Nohar had given his client the money to open his own church while he was staying at Persaud’s home. The court heard that Nohar had promised the client an undisclosed sum of money, if he provided lodging at his home. The pandit accepted the man’s offer, but however Nohar failed to pay him resulting in him taking his dues. “The allegation is only to embarrass my client, who has a stellar reputation,” said the lawyer as he informed the court that his client, was placed on $40,000 station bail and

has been cooperating with the authorities. Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail citing the amount of money that was allegedly stolen. He also highlighted the prevalence and nature of the offence. Despite the prosecution’s objections, the magistrate granted the defendant bail in the sum of $125,000. The pandit was ordered to lodge his passport and report to the Brickdam Police Station every fortnight. He will make his next court appearance on April 1.

PM Hinds reveals retirement plans

– aims to advance in computer literacy By Jeune Bailey VanKeric P R I M E M i n i s t e r, M r. Samuel Hinds has announced that a particular goal among his retirement plans is to enlist in a class in an effort to advance in computer literacy. Speaking at a graduation ceremony for students who have completed training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at Port Mourant, Corentyne, on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Hinds said he feels jealous and incompetent when young people, including his grandson, are computer literate and are able to do things outside his present capability. Hinds, who is the longest-serving Prime Minister in the Caribbean, reminded his audience that he would not be running for office again. “I will be going into retirement after Election Day, and persons have asked what I will be doing then… I will be looking to enroll myself in a class that you have gone through, “ Mr Hinds said, adding: “I am feeling a bit jealous; very incompetent when young people, even my grandson, can do things I cannot do; it is not that I have been a non-technology person. In the summer of 1965, I did a special course; an extra course in computering at my university. “I felt then that I was

at the frontline, but that was a different frontline from the frontline of today. That frontline is a thousand miles in the rear; so I have to catch up. NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN “But 1965 was a long time ago. There has probably been 30 to 40 generations of computers and computing that has passed since then. So I have to catch up. I have to become competent in Skype, along with things like Facebook and Twitter, which are things I hear about, but have not ventured there as yet. I have to get into that

He served briefly as President of Guyana in 1997, following the death of then President Dr Cheddie Jagan. He was awarded Guyana’s highest national award, the Order of Excellence in 2011. He first became Prime Minister under Dr Cheddi Jagan in 1992 following

ed Dr Jagan’s widow, the American-born Ms Janet Jagan, as Prime Minister. The following elections held in December 1997, the PPP/C nominated Hinds as the prime ministerial candidate, whilst Janet Jagan was the candidate for the Presidency. Following the election, Jagan was elected President, and re-appointed Hinds as Prime Minister. In August 1999, President Janet Jagan resigned and temporarily replaced Mr Hinds with Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who became the President upon her resignation. Jagdeo reappointed Hinds as Prime Minister. After the re-election of the Government in the 28th August, 2006 election, Hinds was again sworn in as prime minister. He was again nominated as the prime ministerial candidate for the PPP in October 2011elections, although there were suggestions that he might step aside. After PPP/C candidate Mr Donald Ramotar was elected President, Mr Hinds was sworn in as Prime Minister again on 5th December, 2011. Previously Mr. Hinds worked with ALCAN Aluminum limited, a Canadian mining firm, as head of Chemical Engineering and he is a licensed and qualified chemical engineer, having graduated from the University of New Brunswick, USA.

Shortage of Court reporters halts judge’s summing-up JUSTICE Franklyn Holder, the presiding Judge in the K & VC Hotel murder trial, had planned to sum up the evidence Wednesday. Following this, he was expected to hand over the case to the jury for their consideration and verdict in relation to accused Vinod Balgobin. But this did not happen.

Balgobin, who is facing trial for the murder of his wife Maryann Sunita Nauth, is alleged to have knifed his wife to death after taking her to room 209 of the hotel for sex and had observed that when she stripped, she had tattoos on her abdomen. This, he is alleged to have told the police in a confession statement, led him to conclude that his wife was

giving him “blow.” He told the police that got him vexed and as a consequence, he “jooked up” his wife. The woman was later found dead on the bed in the hotel room. But at his trial, the accused represented by veteran lawyer Mr. Compton Richardson, pleaded not guilty and claimed that the

caution statement had been manufactured by the police. The prosecution denied the allegation by the accused. After it was learnt that the two reporters who are normally hired to take shorthand notes of the summing-up were engaged with another judge, Justice Holder had no alternative than to further put off his summing –up to Monday.

Minibus operators at Stabroek Market area given garbage bins – to stop lawless practice of littering THE Solid Waste Department of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council on Monday handed over 60 bins to minibus drivers operating Routes 41 and 45 at the Stabroek Market tarmac, in an effort to ensure the area is litter-free. The bins, which were valued at $150,000, were supplied by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Anti-Littering Unit and is in keeping with the “Pick It Up Guyana Campaign.” United Minibus Union President, Eon Andrews said the gesture is a welcome step in helping bus drivers to play their part in keeping the Stabroek Market Bus Park clean. The donation stemmed from numerous complaints from members of the public about the bus park being littered with garbage, and particularly the bad habit of passengers throwing refuse through the bus windows during boarding time. The law stipulates that all minibuses must have bins, but not all operators have been in compliance. The fine for someone found guilty of littering ranges from $50,000 to $100,000. Members of the public have said that the authorities should focus attention on the Stabroek Market Bus Park,

with a view of implementing the law. Not all drivers on the Park will benefit from the donation, but the move is to ensure others follow suit so that the Park will be in a tidy state. The EPA has taken a proactive stand in addressing litter bugs, and according to the Solid Waste Department, every effort will be made to frontally address violators of the law. The handing out of the bins is the first step in the process and will provide good grounds for litter bugs to be fined. Solid Waste Management Director, Walter Narine said donations will be made to drivers operating the other routes, but they have a duty to maintain a clean environment and ensure that their passengers comply with the rules of cleanliness. Andrews lauded the EPA in leading the fight to stop littering, noting that the latest gesture cannot be more welcome, pointing out that the Stabroek Market area is like a lawless dumping ground. This culture, he said, must stop. The next step, he added, is for the authorities to look for the violators and make them face the full brunt of the law. (Tajeram Mohabir)

Taxi driver remanded for trafficking cocaine A TAXI driver who was recently convicted for swallowing cocaine, yesterday found himself in the same situation after he tried to traffic cocaine at the Ogle International Airport, East Coast Demerara (ECD). Customs Anti-Narcotics unit (CANU) prosecutor, Oswald Massiah did not relate the details about the charge to the court; however, it is

reported that Defreitas was an outgoing passenger on a LIAT flight. The man was allegedly busted with the cocaine that was strapped to his thigh as he was destined to traffic the drug to Barbados. The prosecutor explained to the court that there is a recording, whereby the defendant confessed to having knowledge of the drug, while he was being questioned at CANU headquarters. Defreitas, 22 of 40 Fifth Street, Bartica, was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance on March 9, at the Sparendaam Court.

Theocracy Party hoping to be new ‘Third Force’ By Tajeram Mohabir

THE Healing the Nation Theocracy Party (HTNT) says it is hoping to become the new ‘Third Force’, following the recent alliance between the Alliance For Change (AFC) and A Partnership For National Unity (APNU). The party announced Wednesday that its Chair is Alfred Park, who is also its Presidential Candidate in the upcoming National and Regional Elections. The HTNT believes that it can rally the support of Guyanese at the upcoming May 11 polls. “We are in the midst of a country on the verge of melting down and the powers that be sit on their ‘racial/ethnic mix formula’ and do nothing except think of a coalition in the form of ‘jockeying for positions’ instead of giving

the nation a vision.” Leaders of the HTNT were in discussion with APNU-AFC officials to join the alliance, and from all indications, the talks failed, thus the party is going without partners to the polls. MAIN SELLING POINT The small party said the legalisation of marijuana

GPHC responds to Kaieteur News on death of 3-yr-old THE Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Wednesday responded to the Kaieteur News article titled, ‘Relatives blame GPHC for death of girl, 3... despite PM revealing brain abscess as cause’. The Hospital, in a release, stated that the patient who was admitted to the hospital on February 5 was discharged on February 12 after her condition had improved. However, on February 23, the patient was returned to the Hospital and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.

She succumbed three days later (February 26). A post-mortem was done, and the cause of death was found to be Septic Shock, Bronchopneumonia and a Brain Abscess. According to the Hospital, during the patient’s visits to the hospital, there were no signs of brain abscess, and the necessary medications were administered to the patient to treat her other two conditions. The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation extends sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

Licensed firearm holder shoots thief THE police are investigating an incident that occurred around 23:00 hrs on Monday last at Belle Vue, West Bank Demerara, where Sunil Dindyal, 42, of De Willem, West Coast Demerara, was shot and injured to his left arm and buttocks by a licensed firearm holder. Investigations have revealed that Sunil Dindyal

was seen removing a vibrating machine and a sanding machine from a workshop owned by the licensed firearm holder and was shot during the confrontation. The vibrating machine and sanding machine were recovered. Sunil Dindyal is now a patient under guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

is one of its main selling points on the campaign trail. According to the HTNT, the current crop of politicians has great difficulty in providing practical solutions to the challenges facing Guyanese. In its “Vision 2020” agenda for change, the Healing the Nation Theocracy Party says: “We recognise that we have to put the power back into the hands of the people” and not leave the development of the country to some. The party said it aims to create wealth by transforming the nature of the economy to achieve growth, accelerate poverty reduction and protection of the vulnerable and excluded by providing

proper jobs and employment opportunities through the co-operative movement.

CAMPAIGNING MODE The HTNT party, along with other political parties contesting the May 11, 2015 elections, has entered full elections campaigning mode, following the dissolution of the 10th Parliament on Saturday. With Parliament dissolved, members of the major political parties will no longer be designated as Members of Parliament, therefore, it is expected that they will pay more focus on their campaign strategies for their respective political parties and constituencies.

Nomination Day is likely to be April 9 this year and already, the political parties have started putting their Regional and National lists together. “Healing the Nation Theocracy Party (HTNT), which is causing quite a buzz in the political environment will be penetrating the markets to lure indecisive voters,” the release said. The HTNT Prime Ministerial Candidate, former Toronto resident, Ras Leon Saul noted that some 130,000 persons did not vote at the last elections in 2011 because “they were not presented with a party that represented real change.” “We are targeting that set

13 of non-voters,” he stated. Ras Saul, who in October 2010 ran to be a councillor on the Toronto City Council, believes that many in that grouping are Rastafarians who believe their rights are not being represented by the existing political parties. “We want to bring our community into the frame because the other parties do not represent our interests,” Ras Saul said. “Of course, Rastafari is also a philosophy grounded in the teaching of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1 and Marcus Garvey, and a faith-based way of life. We promote one love and unity across all communities,” Ras Saul said, noting that the HTNT has been receiving an overwhelming response, with more attention expected as soon as their campaign intensifies. Ras Leon Saul is a well-known and popular playwright, journalist and cultural/social activist who was once an Executive Member of the ruling Conservative party of Canada, the release said.

‘A’ Division Commander and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken spoke with the Guyana Chronicle and explained that he took the initiative of having a Mash band participate in the 2015 Mashramani celebrations to the acting Commissioner of Police (CoP) Seelall Persaud. The commander added that with some explanation and assurances, the idea was given wings with the commissioner’s approval. Hicken related that the

band comprised members of several youth groups from within the boundaries of ‘A’ Division. He noted too that this collaboration forms a part of the new approach by the GPF, since they strive to have a better “Police-to-public partnership.” The ‘A’ Division Commander disclosed how elated the division is to have been able to collaborate with these youths and make the dream a reality. “We are all very happy about winning, since we have not been participat-

ing for some years now,” he explained. On February 14, several youth groups benefited from different items donated under the GPF umbrella, thanks to the success of the community-related approach to policing. Hicken at that event had confirmed that the police will be sponsoring the youth groups which fall under the command of ‘A’ Division. The police have been working with these groups for several months.

In observance of Int’l Women’s Day…

Minister Manickchand hosts luncheon --in honour of women in education sector By Rebecca Ganesh IN observance of International Women’s Day, Education Minister Priya Manickchand yesterday hosted a luncheon at the Gravity Lounge for women in the education sector. The event began with entertainment showcasing musical renditions and some dancing and comedy which was followed by a scrumptious lunch. In attendance were staff members of the Ministry; women of the Guyana Teachers Union, and other Ministers of Government. Also gracing the event was the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Prime Ministerial candidate, Ambassador Elisabeth Harper. Speaking briefly at the event, the Education Minister thanked all the women for their presence and congratulated them on all their achievements in life. She also urged them to continue on the path towards success even though that road is not easy. Meanwhile, Ambassador Harper, during a previous event explained that under this year’s International Women’s Day theme ‘Make It Happen’, it is right for our country “to reflect on the achievements of all women who made it happen in all aspects of their lives.” Ms Harper related that she is proud to have been elected for the Prime Ministerial position by the PPP/C and plans to use her post to empower women. One of the few men at the luncheon was Assistant Chief Education Officer (Primary) Marcel Hutson who remarked that “it’s amazing what a woman can do,” explaining that many women in today’s world not only take care of their families but they are also the bread winners at times.

They can manage work and home but “how they do it, I have no clue.” He noted too that “women should not have to fight for recognition in today’s society; it should be given to them.” All around the world, International Women’s Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality. “Make It Happen” is the 2015 theme and that explains the encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women. Each year International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911. Thousands of events occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women’s groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day.

BURMA ROAD TRAGEDY...

Abel family bids children ‘goodbye’ at moving funeral service By Leroy Smith JUSTIN, Rayden, and Ayshia Abel were all laid to rest Wednesday following the viewing of their remains at Jerrick’s Funeral Home at Paradise, East Coast Demerara. The burial of the three children, the last of the six youngsters who perished in the recent Burma Road tragedy to be interred, followed an earlier viewing at their grandparents’ home at Burma, Mahaicony.

At the Funeral Home, there was the traditional singing of home-going songs, as persons cried uncontrollably at the sight of the three children, the eldest being just 10, as they each lay in their lily-white coffins. The presence of the children at the parlour not only attracted viewers from the village of Mahaicony, but also passersby in public transportation and members of the Paradise community where the funeral parlour

is located. Following the viewing, the body of Ayshia Abel was placed in a hearse by itself, while the remains of the two little boys, Rayden and Justin Abel, were put in one hearse preparatory to the long journey back to Mahaicony for burial. On Sunday, the remains of eight-year-old Martina Persaud was cremated at Mahaicony foreshore, while those of six-year-old Azidia Fraser and ten-yearold Atesha Woolford were

laid to rest on Monday, all amidst very emotional farewells. On Saturday coming, the body of the school teacher, 40-year-old Shondel Duke, will be laid to rest. On February 20, the bodies of the seven persons were pulled from a watery grave where they were trapped in a car that was partly submerged in a canal. The children and teacher who perished were all members of the Augsburg

Primary School and had travelled along the Burma Road from their school that day to be part of a Mashramani celebration at the Novar Primary School, along with students from other schools in the area. On the journey back to their village tragedy struck. Immediately after the news of the tragedy spread, Education Minister, Priya Manickchand and Transport Minister, Robeson Benn travelled to the community and met with residents

and relatives at the hospital. The following day, President Donald Ramotar, Opposition Leader, David Granger and Ministers Manickchand and Benn visited the homes of the deceased and spoke with relatives. The Government of Guyana has paid for all funeral expenses for the children and will be doing the same for the teacher. Autopsies confirmed that the seven accident victims died from drowning.

his weekend with you in mind, we bring you a heady serving of captivating moms who holds their own in the fashion arena. Then there a special damsel who battled with her weight to emerge as one of the hottest ‘suga mommas’ around. Of course, some erred and had to be corrected, and we did make room for hunks to grip the attention of our female readers. All these we creatively mized with entertainment tidbits to set you on fire. Do enjoy, and be here next Friday for more excitement from the Bombshell cauldron ...

Bombshell’s Hottest Babe…

Nancy Osborne is an inspiration to women Bombshell’s most pyrotechnic ‘mommas’

NICHOLA Stanford sizzles like butter in a frying pan SINCE Bombshell intends to remain on top, and not be ‘met or matched’ by our so-called competition, we bring to the platter an entertainment supplement that is informative, exudes excellent variety, and can satisfy the ‘reading whims and fantasies’ of practically anyone. As such, we proudly introduce our new column, showcasing some of the most attractive and sensual mothers, who remain behind the scenes for one reason or another. And who better to begin this column than the unforgettable, mesmerizing, invigorating and charming Nichola ‘Stacy ‘Stanford? This lady is breath-taking all right, never mind she has mothered three lovely children… It’s hard to believe this when you see this diva in person. Stacy, as she is more popularly known, is a distinct reminder to mothers that they should not just ‘roll over and die’ after making a few kids, but should instead be ready to flaunt their good looks for the world to see. This very talented mom is a gifted dancer, television host, legal clerk, and has just recently been awarded the position of Vice President of the University of Guyana Law Society. What more must this picture of loveliness do

Nichola Stanford to silence her critics? It is indisputable that Nichola ‘Stacy’ Stanford is indeed possessed of abundant beauty and brains. If you are a talented and attractive mother and you desire to be featured in this column, please call Alex Wayne on 227-5216, or send your studio photos and other related information to waynealex86@yahoo.com with your contact number. Please state your name, age, profession and the number of children you have biologically mothered. Mind you, ladies, I am sleuthing for very attractive and positive mothers. It’s high time we make way for the mothers, they are the moulders of the next generation. Grab this juicy supplement each Friday to see who will be our next ‘sizzler momma’

The very overweight Nancy in times gone by WHILE she may not be the drop dead gorgeous woman you may have been expecting in this corner, she however has more than justifiable reason to be here. Our decision to feature the appealing Nancy Os-

borne this week is ultimately because she serves as an inspiration to very overweight women, who have battled for ages with their weight and not-so-appealing appearances. While some women choose to sit around and gobble up all the high cholesterol junk food they can put their hands on, Nancy fought her ‘food cravings’ with gritty determination, and endured rigorous sessions of physical exercise to attain a figure that would make her mate tingle with desire, instead of sighing with disgust. In a few months’ time, this new born diva, who is a very talented songstress, moved from weighing over three hundred pounds to a shocking one hundred and fifty, which she also maintains with a very strict diet. So, ladies, use her as a positive inspiration. Get rid of those suffocating corsettes and ‘roll ons’, and get on the treadmill. Eat healthy, exercise, and, of course, utilize the Na-

The very provocative Nancy Osborne as she is today. tional Park for jogging. Do as Nancy did and you would be able to keep your mate from the clutches of those ‘ever ready vultures’. That aside, you would also be able to live a healthy life and practise safe and positive eating.

Buxton/Foulis Mash ready to explode on March 15

HE has done it before, and he has brought it like no one else can! This year around, however, popular East Coast Promoter Ean Havercone (Father Moey) is poised to stage one of the most riveting and exciting entertainment splurges in the ‘Buxton/ Foulis Mash & Soca Bacchannal. While this event has been billed for March 15, 2015 at the Buxton Ground, this wily promoter is taking things a notch higher by bringing to the platter the celebrated artiste ‘Nadia Batson’, who is famous for her scorching hits like ‘Shiver’, ‘Manager’, and so much more. The action is taken to inferno level when he brings to the stage the famous international acts Lead Pipe and Saddis, with their mega hit ‘Bend Up’. On the local side of things, fans will get a scalding serving of soca hits from 2015 Carib Soca Monarch ‘Jomo

‘Rubber Waist’ Primo; ‘Buxton’s own, ‘Zagga B’, and, of course, the much celebrated Super Ray and Super Cat One Man Bands. Five big sound systems will blast it to the limits on the night of March 15, so fans are assured of a ‘Mash Fiesta’ like never before. Meanwhile, the Buxton/Foulis Road Tramp will take off from the Plaisance Market Square earlier in the day, then head to Melanie Damishana Village, before culminating at the Buxton Centre Ground. This event is powered by Precise Printing, Pro Graphics, Star Party Rentals, Tony’s Auto Sales, Boom Energy Drink, Talbot Contraction, 94.1 Boom FM, Stag Beer, and Mackeson. L e n d i n g s u p p o r t a l s o a re HGPTV, IBE School, M&K Taxi Service, Bigga Soft Drink, and the Ministry of Culture Youth & Sports.

‘Flash Back Ole Skool Party’ comes to the Westside C OME Saturday, March 14, 2015, the Aracari Resort Poolside will be pulsating with rhythms as Big K & Cut Master Barber Shop Crew stage their ‘Westside Flash Back Ole Skool Party’. With you in mind, the promoters have taken things a notch higher, having included on their agenda Legend Sounds out of New York City, with the inimitable Selector JB. They will be performing alongside Selector Face and DJ Scene Up from Slingerz. On the music platter also are Magnum and Papa from Big Life Sounds, alongside DJ Puffy and Charlie. Meanwhile, starting from tomorrow night, the resort will be staging the Kenrek Live Band to churn up a steam and set patrons in the mood with soca, reggae, chutney, filmie and oldies selections to take them down memory lane. Action commences from 8pm, and continues until whenever. Tickets are set at $1000 apiece, but fans will be required to pay a higher price at the gate.

You Shouldn’t Do That!!!

Smelly touts continue to harass beleaguered minibus passengers

Joke of the Day! A three-year-old walks over to a pregnant lady while waiting with his mother in a doctor’s surgery. “Why is your stomach so big?” – he asks. “I´m having a baby.” – she replies. “Is the baby in your stomach?” – he asks, with his big eyes. “Yes, it is.” – she says. “Is it a good baby?” – he asks, with a puzzled look. “Oh, yes. A really good baby.” – the lady replies. Shocked and surprised, he asks: “Then why did you eat him?”

Oh Gawd! When will this nonsense ever end? THE police are seemingly bent on again presenting lacklustre campaigns against unruly and unkempt touts who prey in our bus parks. While they staged another of their popular ‘anti-tout exercises’ just recently, it has been quite obvious this was another of their lame exploits. As can be seen in this photo, taken just yesterday, the issue of passengers enduring intolerable levels of harassment from touts still continues unchecked on the Sophia Bus Park. The woman in this photo is literally being dragged to a mini-bus by a rather untidy and smelly tout!

HAGWAH is one of the most ancient, joyous and colorful festivals of the Hindu calendar. This festival was brought to these shores from India by Indian indentured immigrants in 1838. Holi is celebrated forty days from the planting of Holika (Castor Oil tree). The burning of Holika takes place on the Eve of Phagwah (full moon night). A huge structure (pyre) is built, and kindled at the appropriate time in a symbolic act. Phagwah commemorates the New Year for Hindus. The celebration of Phagwah began at a time when India was facing a serious drought, which affected the various crops. The rain eventually came pouring down, to the satisfaction of the people (farmers), who came out in the fields, playing with the water in joyous jubilation as they threw it on each other. Sometime afterwards, they start reaping their bountiful harvest (crop). There are special forms of music and songs which are associated with Phagwah, but Chowtaal singing is the dominant style, which is heard from Basant Panchmi night until eight days after Phagwah. Holi was celebrated before the Prahalad legend, but the story of Prahalad added new dimensions to the celebration. Prahalad’s defiance of the many impositions of his father, King Hiranyakasyapu is testimony and evidence of firm faith in Truth and God. The burning of Holika (Prahalad’s Aunt) is reminiscent of his victory over evil. King Kasyapu contrived various diabolical means to kill his son Prahalad, who went against his will, but all his efforts were in vain. King Hiranyakasyapu had a blessing (boon) that he would not die in the day or night, nor inside or outside of his house, nor

themselves to the public. The winner of this pageant goes on to represent Guyana at the Miss Global International 2015 pageant, slated for June 23rd – 27th in Panama.

Those competing for supremacy this year are Faydeah Cathylyna King, Alicia Nichola Bess, Kiswana Abimola Jefford, Nalicia Ramdyal, Seistra Allen, Shalisa Harripersaud, and Shameeza Wong.

The significance of Phagwah

Celebrating Phagwah would he be killed by man or beast. So he felt that he was God, and proclaimed that all worship must be henceforth given to him. Soon after, Lord Vishnu came in the awful form of Narsingh (half man and half lion) at twilight (neither day nor night). Lord Vishnu brought to an end the tyranny, arrogance and atrocity of the evil King (Hiranyakasyapu) in the centre of the doorway (neither inside nor outside of the house). oli in all embracing, has a historic meaning, with a strong social content which caters for reunion, social exchanges, greetings and visits. It also provides for spiritual communion and economic assessment,

Single-parent mom garners success from epic struggles

The delectable Chandani Anusha Ramdeholl strikes a pose for the Bombshell cameras.

Chandani carefully supervising her employees.

C

HANDANI Anusha Ramdeholl is now a very successful business woman, who owns a Salon and Massage Parlour, and basks in the glory of the superlative income it brings her. She is now a lot more relaxed and at ease, no longer bearing that hallmark frown of a stressed out, worry worn, weather beaten woman. Now that her mind is at ease and all her troubles have been brought to an end, she is a very welcome sight to behold. This did not happen by the waving of a magic wand, but by relentless struggles against all odds as she climbed the ladder of success.

Her touching story follows… Most young girls possessing the good looks of Chandani Anusha Ramdeholl would have been using their strikingly debonair looks to the best of their advantage at a very early age, as is customary these days; but this lady was decidedly different. As a young girl, she did not have her roots in riches, nor was she born with the proverbial gold spoon in her mouth. Instead, she had to work hard to make a living for herself, intensely struggling to cope with the toils of caring for a now nine-year-old son and two- year-old daughter.

Southland International Inc launches ‘Weekend Jubilee’

T

he weekend begins today, and again folks can enjoy Carlsberg Specials after work as they celebrate with friends. Starting from Thursday, March 05, fans can cash in on the specials at 704 Sports Bar (7pm-8pm) for (Bucket Specials, and Somersby Apple Cider & Cranberry with Vodka bargains. Then to the Altitude Lounge, (8pm-9pm) where they can enjoy the ‘3 for $1000’ Experience. All roads lead to Sharon Kissoon (Stabroek Market) for the All day &night ‘3 for $1000’ special. The same will be hosted at the Aracari Resort (Versailles, West Bank Demerara) and at Stadium View, Providence.

S

he worked in several hair salons, hurrying home afterwards to fend for her two

children. These struggles created a very tough, hard and grilled woman beneath that riveting beauty, made strong by her experiences. As she grew older, she began doing several jobs at various entities to fend for her children. Of course her parents pitched in with whatever little they could, but Chandani was indeed the driving force behind her children’s welfare and existence. By a Herculean effort, she was able to fund her training in cosmetology, and complete all the courses to make herself a certified operative in that field. Up till last year, she was working at a salon on the Westside, but experiences there drove her to make the risky decision of opening her own business. She began sleuthing around for a location to open her business, in the meantime stretching her budget to great limits to come up with the finance for such a venture. Her adoring parents again pitched in with assistance; and in a short time, this hard working, single-parent mom was able to amaze her friends and well-wishers when she made her major move. Chandani now owns and controls

Anusha’s Beauty and Body Care Salon & Spa at Lot 8 Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, and business has been booming for the past several months since she began this initiative. his girl is also smart. To retain her many customers, she offers half price on all her services on every second Tuesday in each month. In a recent interview, she noted that this was just one of her many marketing strategies to keep her existing clientele and garner more customers. With a burst of bubbly laughter she explained, “You have to treat (customers) right and keep them coming.” This very industrious single parent mom intends to have her own fashion boutique, and is working assiduously towards making that a reality in the near future. She will not stop there, since she thinks her good looks should also be marketed positively. She will be auditioning for the Guyana Fashion Weekend, and will also target promotional gigs. This 27-year-old beauty is even aspiring to compete in the annual Mother and Daughter pageant in the near future; and, of course, plans to start training for that mega-event quite soon.

Iqbal leads Bangladesh to Banks DIH throws ... important win over Scotland (REUTERS) - Tamim Iqbal came agonisingly close to scoring Bangladesh’s first World Cup century as his side completed a six-wicket

win over Scotland in their Pool A clash at Saxton Oval in Nelson yesterday. Iqbal scored 95, while Mohammad Mahmudullah (62) and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim (60) also contributed as Bangladesh achieved 322-4, their highest successful run chase in oneday internationals. Shakib Al Hasan (52 not out) and Sabbir Rahman (42 not out) guided Mashrafe Mortaza’s side home with 11 balls to spare to cap off the perfectly-timed run chase. The victory put all the pressure on England for their showdown with Eoin Morgan’s side on March 9 in Adelaide, with Bangladesh now on five points and level with third-placed Australia, while England have two. Both have just two games remaining to play. Scotland had been well placed to achieve their first World Cup victory, days after throwing away the opportunity against Afghanistan, after Kyle Coetzer had scored a career-best 156 in his side’s 318 for eight. The 30-year-old’s innings was the first World Cup century by a Scotland batsman and also the highest score by someone from an associate nation at the global showpiece. It also ensured his team posted their highest score against a Test nation. Coetzer, who was named man-of-the-match, shared in a 141-run partnership with

captain Preston Mommsen (39) and 78 runs with Matt Machan (35) to anchor the innings. Scotland enjoyed their third 300-plus score in oneday internationals, having also achieved the mark against Ireland in 2011 and Canada in 2014. After Coetzer was dismissed in the 45th over with Scotland 269 for five, Richie Berrington (26) and Matt Cross (20) combined for a quick-fire 39 runs that saw their side past 300. Bangladesh’s run chase was hampered before they even took the field with Anamul Haque ruled out after he dived to prevent a boundary in the 31st over and appeared to dislocate his right shoulder. He was immediately treated by medical staff but did not re-appear on the field during the remainder of Scotland’s innings and was sent to hospital for scans. Television showed him in a sling with an ice bag strapped to his shoulder. He was not needed as his team mates never looked in desperate trouble against Scotland’s attack despite some nervous moments after Mushfiqur holed out to Calum MacLeod at long-on with 72 runs still needed for victory. Shakib and Rahman however calmly ticked off the runs with the occasional big shot mixed with singles to achieve the win.

“We would like to urge the fans to come out and support the GRFU and I would also like to wish the Guyana team well as they start this campaign - the Green Machine. We look forward to a very thrilling match on Saturday,” Peters said. Meanwhile, with the capital and some other parts of the country experiencing periodic downpour, Green, when asked to give an update on the condition of the field in the National Park, stated that the GRFU is working in conjunction with the National Park Commission to have the field drained. However, Green pointed out that the GRFU, along with the National Park Commission had put a ban on “the use of the field, but, however, they are some very undisciplined footballers who have been showing defiance and are unwilling to cooperate because they are sneaking in to play football. They don’t care; they are damaging the field.” “While footballers are our brothers, they must understand that the National Park is the only playing field available for Rugby and must help to care the field.. Rugby is not a game the rain can stop, so if the rain falls, the match will and must go on and it will be completed that day. Tents will be there for supporters as well,” said the GRFU president.

The pull out, as a result of a pay dispute between the players and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), left the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with a $41 million claim against WICB. The conduct of incumbent president Dave Cameron has also been the subject of raging debate in the cricket world particularly after he retweeted a fan’s tweet criticising West Indies opener Chris Gayle recently. “It is important that we remember that the crisis of CARICOM and of integration, even in cricket, is not isolated,” the Prime Minister said during his lecture presentation. “It is a crisis of our institutions, our societies, our economic models and our system of governance. If truth be told, we have a huge task to restore hope and confidence in our people.” The St Lucian Prime Minister was speaking on the topic “Delivered or Denied: The Dividends of Integration”. “CARICOM is in crisis,” Prime Minister Anthony told the audience. “It is a crisis of our institutions, our societies, our economic models, and our governance.”

Let us play at home to improve our game: Waqar Pakistan coach Waqar Younis By Greg Stutchbury NAPIER, (Reuters) - Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) and other cricketing countries to return to playing matches in the strife-torn nation. Pakistan have not played a series at home since February 2009 when the Sri Lanka team bus was attacked in Lahore and six policemen and a van driver were killed. Several members of the Sri Lanka team were also in-

jured in the attack. Since then Pakistan have played all of their ‘home’ series in UAE, whom they beat by 129 runs at McLean Park on Wednesday. “Pakistan need teams to come to Pakistan,” the 43-year-old former fast bowler told reporters. “That’s what the ICC and world cricket can do to help us out by restarting cricket in Pakistan. “It is a huge loss that cricket is not being played in Pakistan and of course

you can see the symptoms. “That’s the help we can ask for from the cricketing world.” Pakistan have struggled at the World Cup, with their only victories coming against Zimbabwe, which was only by 20 runs, and then UAE on Wednesday. Their batsmen have all struggled, though on Wednesday, four of the top five all scored above 40 with Ahmed Shehzad top-scoring with 93 before he was run-out. The only concern was Nasir Jamshed, who scored just four runs, taking his World Cup total to five runs in three innings, and his performance was heavily criticised by Pakistani media on Wednesday. Waqar, however, refused to vilify Jamshed, whose

BCCI warns Kohli against repeat of misbehaviour NEW DELHI, India (Reuters) - India’s batting mainstay Virat Kohli has been censured for his ugly outburst against a travelling Indian journalist in Perth and has been advised to maintain dignity, the country’s cricket board said yesterday. Known equally for his silken touch with the bat and a penchant for run-ins with opposition players, Test captain Kohli swore at the journalist over a story about his personal life after Tuesday’s net session at the Murdoch Oval. The 26-year-old subsequently realised it was a case of mistaken identity and apologised through another journalist. Team media manager R.N. Baba initially issued a statement terming it a “misunderstanding” and denying abusive languages were used. But Board of Control for Cricket in In-

dia (BCCI) secretary Anurag Thakur said the team management in Australia has been warned against any such incident in future. “The player in question has been told to maintain the dignity of the Indian team at all times, and avoid any such behaviour in the future,” Thakur said in statement. “The BCCI would like to request the concerned parties to move on, and focus on the Indian cricket team’s campaign.” Kohli, who struck a century in India’s 76-run win against Pakistan in their tournament opener, was fined half of his match fee in 2012 for responding to barracking from the crowd by gesturing at them with his middle finger during a Sydney Test. Holders India take on West Indies in their next Pool B match at Perth tomorrow.

A number of sponsors have given support to this tournament which has at stake $400 000 for the winner, secondplacers will receive $200 000, third-placers $125 000 and fourth-placers $75 000. Among the sponsors are Ansa McAl Trading Limited, through its Stag Beer brand, Anita Bissoon, McRae’s Supermarket, Babaloo Car Rental, Snooks Variety Store, Foreign Links, Jermain and Sons, Dave and Celina, Rubigees, Pharmacy, Mark’s Shoe World, Chris Paul, Elain Benjamin. There will be half-time shows and football giveaways throughout the tournament.

fielding was also atrocious, and said he hoped the confidence his batsmen got on Wednesday would help pick the team up for their remaining matches against South Africa and Ireland. “I still feel that Pakistan

need an extra batsmen in the lineup but our batsmen are out-of-form and we are not getting what we are looking for from them,” he said. “If you look around the different teams, they are picking up. You can see

India picking up very late. “Teams like South Africa lost badly and are picking up. “That’s what we are hoping, that all these boys who got runs today can carry on with it.”

Cameron’s removal imperative for the survival of West Indies Cricket … Directors must vote responsibly (Letter to the Sports Editor) IT IS my understanding that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will be holding its Annual General Meeting on March 7, 2015 and directors Joel Garner and Baldath Mahabir will be challenging to unseat the incumbent president Dave Cameron and vice-president Emanuel Nanthan respectively. This is not surprising; for president Cameron has been a WICB director for approximately 10 years including the post of vicepresident from 2007 to 2013, and president from 2013 to date. During

his two years’ reign as president, he displayed a high level of immaturity and incompetence never before demonstrated by any of his predecessors and exhibited a remarkable ability to make decisions that are not in the best interest of West Indies Cricket. According to Proverbs 29 Verse 18, “where there is no vision, the people perish” Mr Cameron fulfils this scripture absolutely. His many failures include: The firing of coach Gibson without proper thought to his replacement and assigning coaching responsibilities to Sir Richie Richardson, Curtly Ambrose and Stuart Williams, all of whom did

not even coach the Leewards teams. In any case, Richie Richardson is the manager of the WI team whilst Stuart Williams as the asst. coach does not seem to be favoured by the WICB for the post of head coach. It was expected that during that period the WICB would have been thinking in terms of the composition of the World Cup team, the captain, leadership etc. 2. The hiring of a Director of Cricket who seems lost in the maze of islands and Guyana that make up the West Indies, and after two full years still has not visited many of the territories (including

Guyana) in order to properly assess their needs and formulate a proper cricket development programme. He seems to be oblivious to the fact that WI Cricket development must not only focus on the performance of the Senior WI cricket team, but also on the type and quality of cricket development processes starting from the bottom, the grassroots. In this regard there should be the- : (a) Establishing of a reliable school cricket progamme throughout the WI. (b) Strengthening the club cricket structure administratively and technologically – ensuring that appropriate infrastructure is in place. (c) Intensifying the domestic and regional tournaments. (d) The institution of satellite Cricket Academies in each of the six territories and restoration of the now defunct High Performance Centre (HPC) in Barbados. 3. Establishing a Coaching Committee that visits each territory in order to design a comprehensive coaching programme that is suitable and sustainable for each territory and consistent with the WICB overall coaching programme so that when players progress to the Test level they are better prepared. 4. The Professional League/ Franchise tournament has been poorly instituted with the WICB losing a golden opportunity to rake in the funds required to execute most if not all development needs, particularly when Mr Garner is now saying that the WICB is bankrupt. 1. So what was the interest and expectations of WICB in this venture? 2. Where are the funds received from the franchise/ professional league and the total capitulation to the ICC (India, England & Australia) takeover of international cricket? The amounts and utilisation of these funds seem to be a well-guarded secret which must now be divulged. 3. The ignoring of the ongoing Guyana cricket problems must be the most sinful and shameful act of Mr Cameron and his seventeen (17) directors together with the unprecedented deterioration of the standard of cricket in Leewards, Windwards and Guyana specifically, and Trinidad/Tobago, Jamaica and Barbados generally. The situation is so grim that Guyana have won the 2014 U-15, U-19 and Senior competitions consistently beating all the other teams but yet cannot have a single player on the WI World Cup Team. Chairman of Selectors Clive Lloyd stated that Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard

were omitted from the World Cup side basically because of poor form but he and his panel failed to recognise the current form of Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo and Narsingh Deonarine even in the replacement of injured WI players. I am wondering if in considering young Jason Holder for the captaincy of the WI World Cup team Clive Lloyd’s selection panel remembered that Permaul was twenty-three (23) years old, captained the Guyana Seniors, the WI ‘A’ Team and represented the WI Senior Team? I am also wondering if our selfimposed directors to the WICB had questioned the Selectors’ recommendation for it is the known policy that Selectors recommend to WICB meetings and the Board appoints/confirms. The buck stops at the Board and its leadership. It is my considered view that Clive Lloyd should have been made President of the WICB or Director of Cricket of the WICB where his experience, expertise and vast influence could have been better utilised, rather than as Chairman of Selectors where he could only select from what the pool produces. Any Board president worth his salt must question such recommendations especially when the person recommended is young, inexperienced, cannot command a place in the team and leads a group consisting of senior players participating in a high level international tournament and with three (3) former captains in that team. It is my firm belief that the entire plot was implemented by the WICB based on a determination to penalise Bravo and Pollard more than any concern for West Indies Cricket. While I have no problem with the WICB embracing a new order and enforcing discipline, I think that timing is important and a fair and structured plan must be the basis for any action, not vengeance nor malice. After all, the impact their decisions will have on the players themselves must be considered. Within the framework of such obvious inefficiencies along with the president’s recent tweet and retweeting on retirement packages for his players we find that Guyana, Leewards and Windwards – the current minnows of WI cricket, the territories that have suffered most from the ineffectiveness of Dave Cameron’s poor leadership, are the ones that now seek to re-elect him Kudos to

Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica, at least the executive bodies, who worked with Cameron for the past two (2) years have not seen it fit to commit to his re-election. This is more important when one recognises that it was Jamaica who nominated Cameron and Trinidad that seconded him in 2013 elections. Guyana and Barbados in 2013 supported Dr Hunte. Yet today despite all Cameron’s wrongdoings Guyana’s self-imposed directors (who do not have the support of the majority of the members) have decided to vote for “gross inefficiency” instead of a “hopeful change”. One must ask the question – Why? Is it because the self-imposed Guyanese directors are clueless on cricket matters and could care less about the state of Guyana Cricket and West Indies Cricket? We are indeed in a bad way when the eighteen (18) persons in charge of Regional Cricket cannot come together and make decisions in the best interest of our cricket, but prefer to allow greed, corruption and incestuous practices to take over our beloved game. The very WICB insists that players must represent West Indies with pride but they themselves do not manage West Indies Cricket with pride. I suggest that they indulge in some serious introspection, and I am extremely concerned that if Mr Cameron is returned as president, our cricket will continue its downward slide. There is nothing in his tenyear sojourn at the top of our cricket administration to suggest otherwise. Proverb 29:12 states that “if a ruler hearken to lies all of his servants are wicked”. Meanwhile, we will have to pay forty-two million dollars (US$42M) to India and simultaneously lose the friendly relations that have always existed between India and the West Indies. And in the not-too-distant future, WI Cricket will dive further into the Abyss of Doom and be among the minnows of international cricket where even Ireland, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan will all rise above West Indies. Mr Cameron and those who support him care not for WI Cricket. No amount of money they have received seems enough and for them cricket development is to “talk about” but not “execute” particularly since, according to Cameron, the cricket belongs to them and they cannot be moved. Claude Raphael Former WICB Director

Junior sprinter Keisha Phillips looking for CARIFTA Games spot

Keisha Phillips comfortably wins the 100m sprint. By Leeron Brumell AT the end of 2014 when the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) held a oneday retreat at the Splashmin’s Fun Park, one man stood up, introduced himself as Linden Phillips and went on to boldly state that he has one athlete under his

charge, Keisha Phillips. “I’m telling you, she will be one of the best athletes this country will see.” Fast-forward to 2015 when people got up and took notice. In three outings this year, on local soil, Keisha Phillips has been unbeaten in the sprints in the U-17 division.

Development Meets 1 & 2 – she won the 80m and 150m sprints last Sunday; commanding wins in the 100m in 12.2 seconds, victory in the 200m in 25.1 seconds and the 400m 1:00.00. She’s only 13; 14 in May; with her focus firmly on the CARIFTA Games Trials set for this weekend at the GDF

ground, Camp Ayanganna. In an interview at the Chronicle, in Bel Air Park, Mr Phillips said he trains her five days per week on the Buxton ground, from 05:00hrs to 07:00hrs. It involves a lot of extra running, speed work and strength training; albeit improvised. He said he uses tyre tubes as resistance bands, a discarded car battery to develop upper body muscles, and a gas cylinder when performing squats. “This girl is a special for me - her determination. This is what she showed me, what she wanted. It’s not that she would be reluctant,” said Phillips of his niece. In just over a week, he hopes to have her improve on her times, in all three events; if possible. In the 100m, which he was told she was not suited

Minnows may be battling, but not fighting all the way By Greg Stutchbury NAPIER, New Zealand (Reuters) - With the governing body looking to downsize the tournament in 2019 the associate nations have impressed with some of their performances at the 2015 World Cup, but UAE’s attitude against Pakistan suggested something else might be driving their team. Do not get embarrassed. After going against conventional wisdom and choosing to field first on what is considered the best batting surface in New Zealand at McLean Park in Napier on Wednesday, UAE were unable to restrict Pakistan from quietly posting 339 for six. It was the batting, however, that indicated their intentions and while Shaiman Anwar impressed again with 62, UAE never really looked interested in chasing the victory target and batted out their 50 overs to finish on 210 for eight. Instead they appeared more mindful of being dis-

missed for 102 inside 32 overs against India in Perth in their previous match and did not want to repeat that. “Our performance against India was not up to the mark but we discussed that against the rest of Test nations we need to put up good performances,” UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir told reporters in Napier. “Our effort is to do well against a Test nation and put up a decent performance against them. “Playing a 50-over game against Pakistan is a big positive for the team. “In pursuit of 350 we didn’t want to get out in 30 overs and make a mockery of ourselves.” The competition does not get any easier for UAE with their next game against a rampant South African side in Wellington on March 12. AB de Villiers’ team have exceeded 400 in their last two games and scored 339 in their first game. Tauqir indicated the only way they could not suffer the same fate as Ireland and West Indies would be to bat

UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir first against the Proteas. “It seems against South Africa the only way they can score 400 runs is win the toss and bat,” he said laughing. “We need to bowl well if we field first and field well to restrict them.

“ We s h o u l d n o t concede 400 plus runs (though) even now conceding 400 is not an embarrassing total. “We will be putting in a lot of effort against South Africa.”

Keisha Phillips and her coach Linden Phillips for; he wants her to stop the clock at 11.58 seconds; the 200m at 24.7 seconds and he’s hoping to shave two seconds off her 400m time of 1:00.00. “I’m optimistic she would make the qualifying times, but I’m wrestling with which event I want to drop. I want to drop the 400m, but she’s still good at all of them, but I still want her to

run the 100m. We’re working on that.” Phillips has no formal training as a coach; he trains the Bladen Hall Secondary student based on his experience and knowledge of the sport. In 1985 he too was a track athlete for Guymine Constabulary; before migrating to Suriname. He came home in 2011 to ‘nurture’ Keisha’s talent.

St Lucia, Haiti routed to continue losing streak SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (CMC) – St Lucia and Haiti suffered heavy drubbings on day four of the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, as their weak start to the competition continued here Tuesday. While St Lucia were battered 6-0 by Mexico, their French Caribbean neighbours Haiti were stunned 7-0 by Panama, as both Caribbean Football Union sides slid to their second defeat of the tournament which kicked off last Friday. In the other game Tuesday’s triple-header, Canada edged Costa Rica 3-2. Playing at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano, St Lucia were floored by braces from Ulises Torres and Jose Gurrola as Mexico produced a strong second-half showing, to run out easy winners. Down 1-0 at half-time through Torres’ 44th minute strike, St Lucia failed to withstand the Mexicans’ second half blitz, and were down 2-0 just 13 minutes after the break when Kevin Magaña converted Gurrola’s cross from the right side. Gurrola, who came off the bench in the 58th minute, glanced in a close-range header following Eduardo Aguirre’s cross to make it 3-0 four minutes later and the

Mexicans were in full control when Kevin Lara knocked in a rebound in the 72nd minute, after missing a penalty moments before. Five minutes later, Gurrola completed his brace with a shot from 13 yards out and Torres got his second deep in stoppage time at the end when he headed past the outstanding St Lucia goalkeeper Viannie George. Haiti, meanwhile, were hammered by Panama, with Leandro Vila and Ronaldo Córdoba leading the way with braces. Córdoba opened the scoring in the 10th minute after capitalising on a weak goal kick from goalkeeper Emmanuel Chery and Avila added a second four minutes later following a fine individual effort. Oliver Beckles and Cordoba then scored in the space of three minutes as Panama rushed to a 4-0 lead after 21 minutes. Adalberto Carrasquilla grabbed another on the stroke of half-time just minutes after Erickson Joseph Junior was sent off for a high boot. Avila completed his brace seven minutes after the break and José Rodríguez snatched a goal ten minutes from the end to complete the rout for Panama.

Webb set to continue as head of CONCACAF

MIAMI, Florida (CMC) – High-profile CONCACAF president Jeff Webb is set to be elected unopposed for his first full term as leader of the confederation. CONCACAF, the continental governing body for football in North, Central America and the Caribbean, confirmed Tuesday that Webb would have no challengers for the post when elections are held at next month’s Ordinary Congress. Once elected, he will lead the confederation until 2019. Webb, a Caymanian banker, took over at the helm of the confederation in 2012 in the wake of the cash-forvotes scandal which rocked Caribbean football, and resulted in the resignation of then-president, Trinidadian Jack Warner. With his election to the

top post, Webb completed Warner’s term which had started in 2010. He has since pushed through considerable reforms in the confederation, relating to ethics, governance and finance, in an attempt to rebuild CONCACAF’s image, tarnished by the scandal. “This is a new era for CONCACAF, a new chapter based on building a powerful structure of integrity, transparency and accountability to allow our region to grow,” Webb said recently. “We have gained the trust required to attain the contribution that creates a strong organisation like the one we are envisioning.” Over the last two years, Webb’s stock has risen quickly, with many in the football arena already tapping him as a future president of football’s world governing body,

CONCACAF president Jeff Webb FIFA. Only weeks ago, he was forced to quell speculation linking him to a run against incumbent FIFA president Sepp Blatter at the upcoming elections in May. Meanwhile, CONCACAF vice-president Captain

Horace Burrell of Jamaica, is also poised to be re-elected unopposed. The Jamaica Football Federation president will be joined by fellow vice-president Justino Compeán of Mexico, who will also have no challengers for his post.

The BK International-sponsored stage which is being coordinated by national cycle coach Hassan Mohamed will see defending champion Alanzo Greaves put to the test as he will have many in-form cyclists to out-duel. The likes of Marlon `Fishy’ Williams, Hamzah Eastman, Orville Hinds, Raynauth Jeffrey, Michael Anthony and Paul DeNobrega readily come to mind. GRFU names provisional squad for

THE Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) yesterday announced the names of 27 players ahead of its team’s clash against Barbados tomorrow at the National Park Rugby Field. A blend of players from their historic squad last year and some new faces will look to help Guyana overcome the ‘Bajans’ and aim to retain their North American and Caribbean Ruby Association (NACRA) title. Head coach Theodore Henry said that the squad, compared to that of last year, is “roughly the same, but we’ve added a few more players and we’re a bit fitter this year, given the fact that we are preparing for the Hong Kong Sevens at the same time. The team is going to be well prepared and ready to go.” Unlike the previous year, the GRFU is preparing both their 15s and 7s teams for international engagement with Henry, the recently named National Sports Commission Coach-of-the-Year at the helm at the squads. Jaguars wary of threat from title chasers Pride and Volcanoes ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, (CMC)-Leaders Guyana Jaguars will be seeking to put themselves beyond the reach of title contenders Barbados Pride and Windward Islands Volcanoes when they face Jamaica in the WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) which resumes today. Jaguars posted a stunning victory over Pride heading into last weekend’s tournament break while Jamaica suffered another setback losing to Trinidad and Tobago Red Force Guyana, playing at home, will be looking to land their fifth straight victory, to spoil the title chasing ambitions of Pride and Volcanoes while the visitors will be seeking to avoid their fourth straight defeat. Both sides have made one change to their squad from the previous round. West Indies left-hander Assad Fudadin has recovered from the injury that cut short his Test tour of South Africa last December and will take the place of rookie Shimron Hetmyer. Chadwick Walton, the West Indies reserve wicketkeeper/batsman on that trip to South Africa, gets his first match of the season with the Franchisers, replacing Horace Miller. Meantime, at Warner Park, The Barbados Pride will attempt to exploit The Leeward Islands Hurricanes, the Cinderella team in the tournament. Both sides enter the match wounded from their last encounter- the Pride suffering their first defeat of the season and the Hurricanes slumping to their seventh straight loss inside three days. Victory with a huge haul of batting and bowling points for highly favoured Pride would keep the pressure on the Jaguars. Kraigg Brathwaite’s side travelled with an unchanged squad from the previous round while their hosts have brought back Montcin Hodge, Jacques

Assad Fudadin Taylor, Anthony Martin and Hayden Walsh Jr in place of Yannick Leonard, Austin Richards Jr, along with the unrelated Peters, Orlando and Sherwin. In Couva, Trinidad: The presence of Kieron Pollard could help to make the contest between Red Force and Volcanoes at the National Cricket Centre, the most competitive of the round. The 27-year-old Pollard will be playing his first match of the season for the Red Force and should add a great deal of substance to their batting, which has been inconsistent this season. The two sides enter the match on a high, following confident victories inside three days in their previous matches before the break, which broke a spell of four straight losses for the Red Force and gave the Volcanoes their third straight victory. Apart from Pollard replacing Shannon Gabriel, promising left-hander Jeremy Solozano has returned from the injury list for the Red Force and fellow left-handed opener Evin Lewis loses out. Romel Currency and Dalton Polius replaced the sidelined Sunil Ambris and injured Andre Fletcher in the Volcanoes squad, Also, uncapped Grenadian wicketkeeper/ batsman Denis Smith has been given a late call after Johnson Charles was flown out to be part of the West Indies squad at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, when injury forced Darren Bravo to return home.

Banks DIH throws support behind the ‘Green Machine’ ... Guyana to play Barbados in NACRA 15s title defence

By Rawle Toney GUYANA’s most successful sports team will head into action this weekend as they begin their North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) 15s title defence against Barbados tomorrow at the National Park Rugby Field. Nicknamed the ‘Green Machine’, Guyana’s 15s Rugby Team shocked the world last year when they toppled the mighty USA (South) in the NACRA Finals in Atlanta and would now look to make it two in a row after claiming the country’s first claim on the prestigious trophy. “Banks DIH has always been supportive of rugby and

we will continue to offer our support to the development and growth of Rugby in Guyana,” explained Banks DIH’s Public Relations Officer, Troy Peters, at the presentation which was held in the Boardroom at Thirst Park; the company’s headquarters. Behind their world-famous Banks Beer, Banks DIH handed over a cheque for an undisclosed sum to the president of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Peter Green. Peters made a plea for persons to come out on Saturday and support the team which has silently been carrying the Golden Arrowhead proudly with much success. Turn to page 26

Windies cricket problems mirror crisis in CARICOM - Prime Minister Anthony …Players who quit India tour should have been fired’

St Lucia Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) - The problems hampering West Indies cricket mirror a crisis plaguing the Caribbean Community, the St Lucia Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony has argued. As such, Prime Minister Anthony is calling for an overhaul of the structure of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), the body which governs the sport in the region. However, while insisting that change is needed, the St Lucian leader does not believe politicians should interfere with the administration of the sport. “The WICB are not answerable to the

people of the region,” Dr Anthony told the Express following his lecture at the CARICOM Leaders series on the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies. Prime Minister Anthony was quoted as saying that once the board’s structure was changed, the politicians should leave it alone. The WICB has come under intense public scrutiny after the controversy surrounding the West Indies aborted tour of India late last year. “For my part, I would have started with a new fresh team,” the Express quotes Prime Minister Anthony as saying in reference to the players.
