PPP EXPRESSES CONCERNS OVER GECOM RECRUITMENT PROCESS…

GECOM assures party that only competent persons will be engaged THE Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will not hire persons who do not satisfy their (GECOM’s) criteria, according to its Chairman, Dr Steve Surujbally.

The assurance follows repeated concerns expressed by the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Clement Rohee, earlier this week.

“The PPP urges qualified and competent persons desirous of safeguarding Guyana’s democracy to apply, so that suitably qualified persons are recruited to work on polling day. Further, the party over the last several months has made several calls on GECOM to ensure that its recruitment process is done in a transpar-

ent manner and that competent persons are employed,” he said.

CALL FOR PUBLIC VETTING Rohee also reiterated the party’s call for public vetting of persons employed or who have applied to be employed to work on Election Day. “Such an exercise will again justify the transparency of the process and enhance the confidence of the electorate in GECOM’s ability to deliver a free and fair election on May 11,” he said.

The PPP general secretary told the Guyana Chronicle that public vetting will also serve to assure many who may have witnessed deviations from

established procedures in the conduct of General and Regional elections.

“There are a number of issues…the fact that there were officials who did not act in conformity with the rules and manuals is where the problem is,” he said.

Rohee pointed to two cases in particular - one, the issue where several ballot papers were deemed spoilt because they had not been stamped by GECOM officials at a Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, polling station.

“One can recall the Herstelling fiasco in the 2011 elections, where 19 ballot papers were given to 19 individual voters without the presiding or assistant presiding

“Public vetting will fix the problems we had during the last elections, when it comes to the persons who were responsible… Guyanese must demand public knowledge of all polling day staff, since this should be of no secret to the populace,” he said.

Asked about the PPP’s objections to information clerks, he said, “That [the existence of problems] might have been so, but it does not negate the merits of having information clerks. They do provide a valuable service. While there is a call for us not to have these clerks, there is a counter call to say we are not doing enough when it comes to this issue.”

ployees engaged by GECOM have been already vetted.

He said: “We have vetted our polling day staff. We sent out applications, people responded, we shortlisted them on the basis of the criteria we set out. We have trained them.

We went through evaluations and on this basis, the levels of achievement, we will be selecting people to work in polling stations.”

Persaud added that the persons hired are also dispatched within their respective areas, where they are known to the voters in that particular area.

He expressed the view that public vetting of the Commission’s employees may be a counter-productive engagement.

“We have received calls from potential employees that say you publish our names we will not work,” the DCEO stated, adding that in this regard GECOM may find itself unable to fill the staff quota needed for the hosting of the May 11 General and Regional Elections.

“We are confident that the people we have appointed and will appoint are persons who are adequately trained and would have demonstrated competence,” Persaud said.

The Deputy Chief Elections Officer expressed confidence in the electoral process and in the Commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

Persons without ID cards will not be barred from voting OVER 35,000 identification cards are still sitting at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) office, cards that belong to persons registered since 2008, some of whom are below

voting age.

However, according to the GECOM Chairman, Dr Steve Surujbally, voters eligible to participate at the upcoming May 11 General and Regional elections, do not necessarily need the identification cards to cast their votes.

He explained that on E-Day, GECOM officials at all polling stations will be in possession of “folios” that will allow them to identify eligible voters assigned to vote at the respective polling stations.

The folios, Surujbally said, will include pictures and bio-data of registrants at each polling station.

The GECOM Chairman added that information included in the folios could be the basis of questions that are asked of the individuals without identification cards.

“In addition to that you have

the person standing right in front of you,” he said.

GECOM officials have repeatedly stressed that there are systems in place to ensure that no person votes in place of another individual, or votes more than once – measures similar to the ones used in past elections that were determined free and fair.

There are currently some 567,125 persons on the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE), an increase from the 492,000 in 2011.

With the Commission’s ongoing Claims and Objections period scheduled to end on Sunday, GECOM has indicated that the Revised List of Electors (RLE), following the end of the ongoing Claims and Objections period, could possibly be completed by March 16, while the OLE is likely to be published by April 13.

Voters will be told of changes in location of polling stations – DCEO THE Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) must ensure that all polling places are checked and verified as quickly as possible and that residents are made aware of these locations.

This was the call made by the General Secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Clement Rohee, during a news conference earlier this week.

“The PPP is wary of G E C O M ’s l a s t - m i n u t e changes to the location of polling stations, which add to the frustration of voters,” he said.

Rohee acknowledged that GECOM had agreed to minimise changes and so, too, those unavoidable changes will be done in consultation with the political parties.

In a recent interview with the Guyana Chronicle, he explained that in some cases last-minute changes could not be avoided.

However, he gave the assurance that every effort will be made to ensure that if and when these changes are made, the voting public will be made aware.

“Changes could become inevitable in cases where we use private residences as polling places, because there are no public buildings available for use. In this case, a private resident can change their minds and in that case we have to change polling places,” Persaud said.

The DCEO stated that last-minute changes are not the ideal circumstances that

GECOM would prefer to work with, however, he underscored the fact that there may be such cases.

“We will have measures in place to make people aware of the changes, if there are any,” he assured.

Persaud also stressed that GECOM, as it has done in the past, will continue to address the concerns of stakeholders in the electoral process.

Kamwatta residents pledge support for PPP/C at upcoming elections

SOME organisations/employers are still engaging in bad management practices and indulging in illegal acts, by failing to remit workers’ National Insurance Scheme (NIS) contributions, income tax deductions, and other deductions to the relevant authorities.

So said Minister of Labour, Dr. Nanda Gopaul while addressing the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) fifth delegates’conference on Wednesday.

Minister Gopaul disclosed that some workers are still reporting that their NIS contributions and deductions have not been submitted to the various authorities, and this is a matter which will be looked at keenly by the ministry and the trade unions.

“Any employer found guilty of this act will face the full force of the law… There will be no ifs or buts, because income tax and other deductions once taken out from the workers’ salaries must be submitted to the relevant authorities promptly,” he said.

He added that for instance, NIS benefits should be remitted to the NIS so that workers should have

serious difficulties by the resistance of some employers, who have been resisting trade union rights, and on the other hand who have been collecting workers’ dues and not paying it [sic] over to the trade unions and other relevant authorities.”

RESIDENTS of Kamwatta community in Moruca, Region 1, have pledged their full support to the PPP/C Government at the general and regional elections on May 11.

At a community meeting held recently, residents said they are proud of the PPP/C Government because of development that has taken place in their community over the past 22 years and assured Regional Chairman Region 2, Mr Parmanand Persaud,that they will vote solidly for the “cup” at the elections.

The regional chairman, who had addressed residents at the community meeting in their village recently, said the Government has restored Guyana from a begging basket when it took power on 5th October 1992 to a prosperous nation 22 years after. Mr Persaud said the PNC now disguised as the APNU had destroyed the country during its 28-year dictatorship which ended on 5th October, 1992, when the PPP/C won the elections. He reminded residents that when the PPP/C came into office, everything was down and the country had a foreign debt of some $US2.1B. He said there were severe food shortages,

unreliable electricity supply, bad roads and poor health services. The chairman reminded residents that schools and other Government buildings were in poor and terrible condition and the ferry service was a nightmare.

Mr Persaud said the PPP/C led by the late President Cheddi Jagan took Guyana from a begging basket in 1992 and has transformed the country into a prosperous nation. He said today when Guyana is developing and progressing rapidly, the same

One resident told the chairman: “I have seen development in my community and life has changed under the caring PPP/C Government and I will vote for the party. Chinese diplomat tells West to consider Russia’s security concerns over Ukraine He said the “nature and root cause” of the crisis was the “game” between Russia and Western powers, including the United States and the European Union.

He said external intervention by different powers accelerated the crisis and warned that Moscow would feel it was being treated unfairly if the West did not change its approach.

“The West should abandon the zero-sum mentality, and take the real security concerns of Russia into consideration,” Qu was quoted as saying.

(Reuters) – WESTERN powers should take into consideration Russia’s legitimate security concerns over Ukraine, a top Chinese diplomat has said in an unusually frank and open display of support for Moscow’s position in the crisis.

Qu Xing, China’s ambassador to Belgium, was quoted by state news agency Xinhua late on Thursday as blaming competition between Russia and the West for the Ukraine crisis, urging Western powers to “abandon the zero-sum mentality” with Russia.

His comments were an unusually public show of understanding from China for the Russian position. China and Russia see eye-to-eye on many international diplomatic issues but Beijing has generally not been so willing to back Russia over Ukraine.

China has also been cautious not to be drawn into the struggle between Russia and the West over Ukraine’s future, not wanting to alienate a key ally.

Iraq and Syria since launching a campaign to “degrade and destroy” Islamic State, which last year declared a “caliphate” on territory it has captured in both countries.

The U.S.-led coalition has launched 20 strikes against Islamic State in Syria since early Thursday, its Combined Joint Task Force said on Friday.

The Kurdish YPG militia has been one of Islamic State’s toughest enemies in Syria. Last month it flushed the group out of Kobani on the Turkish border, breaking the militants’ four-month siege of the town with the help of U.S. and allied air support and Iraqi Kurdish reinforcements on the ground.

Since then, Kurdish forces backed by other Syrian armed groups have pursued Islamic State fighters as far as their provincial stronghold of Raqqa.

Latest Cuba-US talks under way as U.S. hopes to open embassy

Cedros always buzzing with Venezuelan trade (BBC News) WHILE Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro have agreed to barter goods, trade in Cedros has already increased over the past few months. With Venezuela’s deepening economic crisis, officials from the Immigration Division, Customs and Excise Division and shop owners said more Venezuelans are flocking to T&T for items, such as milk, diapers, flour and laundry detergent, to take back to their country which has been suffering from a shortage of basic commodities.

Cedros, which is T&T’s closest legal entry point from South America, recorded 424 people arriving at the port last month as opposed to 211 last December. He said the arrivals for this month were almost the same as last month. Immigration Officer Keith Lewis said there were only a few arrivals that were locals returning from Venezuela.

He said the majority of Venezuelans came to buy items in T&T because of high inflation there. “Most of them would come and buy onions, garlic, diapers and toilet paper. “They said things are hard in Venezuela and that goods are cheaper and more available here. “All foreign vessels that come to south Trinidad come through Cedros.

Sometimes three to four boats come daily with people coming to shop and take back goods while a few of them visit family members. “Some shop owners and boat owners take orders from people across there and transport it to them,” Lewis added. Customs and Excise officials said the visitors come from the costal towns of Tucupita, Perdinade and La Guaira aboard pirogues.

Fighting fire!

- recognising improvements within the Guyana Fire Service FOR those critics, especially from the political Opposition who, for the well-known exercise of soliciting sympathy from their constituents, continue to criticise the Government for its socio-economic programmes, the recent opening of the $139M Guyana Fire Service training school at Leonora, is another significant example of what national development is all about.

This is a further investment in a most critical and essential service, and comes at a time when a comprehensive security reform programme is cur-

rently underway. In fact, the GFS is part of this reform process, with the objective of modernising its operational capacity for maximum response; while being prepared for its envisaged, extended role with regards to rescue and related emergencies.

This event comes in the wake of the recent announcement by Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Clement Rohee, of the Fire Service Strategic Plan 2014 - 2019, a comprehensive programme that in its implementation, will result in a service that will be properly managed, with defined roles and functions for all its actors, clearly demarcated.

Indeed, the GFS has come

a very long way, gradually evolving into one that is now far better equipped, than at any other time of its history, to render response emergency service.

From a service, which at the dawn of that epoch-making year of 1992, that only had eight fire stations across Guyana and a few fire tenders, it now has a total of seventeen such services, with the significantly increased number of 54 fire tenders, inclusive of those that are equipped for multi-storeyed fires and related emergencies. It is instructive to note that nine new stations have been built since 1992.

It is an exponential improvement for a critical service that had virtually come to a dangerous halt, and which fire fighting abilities had been severely hampered by porous hoses and outdated equipment. A similar state of affairs was also common in the other sister services, especially the Guyana Police Force.

Therefore, we contend that the Security Sector Reform Programme is timely in its implementation, for what it intends to achieve – a comprehensive reform of all of the disciplined services, with the end product being individual modern components, functioning in a highly com-

petent, professional manner.

This also includes a highly capable and responsive fire service.

The undisputed, beautiful reality is that Guyana is now a vastly changed socio-economic landscape.

The massive transformation along the clearly visible path of development that the current administration is pursuing cannot be disputed. Evident all over, for instance, is the four-fold increase in the industry and manufacturing sectors.

Reference can also easily be made as it relate to the newly built housing settlements across the country with thousands of newly built homes, among the numerous positive changes.

Of course, these developments will always increase the risk of conflagrations and other emergencies.

It means, unhesitatingly, that a modern Fire Service

with enhanced response capabilities is an imperative for Guyana. And for this the government must again be commended for its visionary approach in executing a national development plan that is inclusive of, and complements with, all the sectors for a productive whole.

We are certain that as the Guyana Fire Service continues to metamorphose into that highly professionalised service, its response to relevant emergencies will reflect such a transition. At the same time, too, citizens are expected to support the soon-to-be-renamed Guyana Fire and Rescue Service, in its fire preventive efforts.

We continue to wish all the members of this very important service, the very best in its future endeavours.

Police launch manhunt for alleged rapist of eight-year-old niece

THE eight-year-old girl of 6 Miles Arakaka, North West District, who has accused her step-father’s brother of raping her, is said to be in a stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital where she is being monitored by doctors.

According to information reaching the Guyana Chronicle, the police have since launched a manhunt for the

alleged perpetrator.

Police sources are of the view that the man may have ventured deeper into the “backdam” to evade them and angry relatives including his brother and other concerned persons, who have expressed outrage over the act.

The man who is said to be in his 20s according to his brother, was left alone at home with the

child while the parents went out to return. Upon their return, they noticed that the young child was crying uncontrollably and when questioned, she related that the man had sexually assaulted her.

The child’s mother then examined her and saw signs that she had been sexually assaulted. The parents immediately took the child to the Matthews Ridge Hospital,

where she was seen by doctors there and immediately transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Over the past few months, there have been numerous cases of rape coming to light and these cases have been keeping the police very busy with some even being committed on junior family members by their seniors.

Only recently, a police

rank was disciplined departmentally and later charged for attempting to pervert the course of justice as she was caught on tape trying to arrange a settlement between the families of a rape victim and the suspect.

In that case, the Ministry of Human Services wrote the commissioner of police requesting that the matter

be dealt with condignly and that the investigation be carried out thoroughly and expeditiously in order to bring those involved to justice. In less than 24 hours of the receipt of that letter, the man at the centre of the rape accusation was charged for the offence of rape as recommended by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

First Burma Road tragedy victim for cremation tomorrow EIGHT –YEAR- OLD Martina Persaud, one of the six children who died in a tragic road accident on the Burma Road last week Friday along with their schoolteacher will be cremated tomorrow Sunday according to Hindu rites.

On Friday, Ronald Persaud, the father of the dead young girl told this newspaper that a funeral service will be held at their Lot 70 Burma residence following viewing and then to Goedfaith Mahaicony seashore for the cremation at

13:00hrs.

Meanwhile, the Woolford and Fraser children are expected to be laid to rest on Monday, provided the family completes all relevant documentation on time.

Viewing is also expected to be done at their homes before the burial.

Based on what this newspaper was told, the Abels are expected to be interred on Wednesday, while the teacher will be laid to rest on Saturday.

all the funerals and following final sending off of all the victims, the village is expected to have a memorial service sponsored by the regional officials of Region 5.

The memorial was agreed upon by the relatives of the deceased as against a onenight wake for everyone, since the arrangements for funerals were on different days.

The seven persons were killed following a tragic incident on Friday last when the car the school teacher was driving with her six students

ended up in a canal along the Burma Road. Post-mortems which were performed on the remains of the children and their teacher found that they all died from drowning.

The children and the teacher were at the time returning from a regional Mashramani event which had been organised by the regional education department. The death of the children and teacher has reduced the student population of the school from 15 to eight and its teaching staff from three to two.

Immediately after the incident, the Education Minister, Prime Minister and Works Minister visited the community of Mahaicony, where they met with the relatives and villagers who had gathered at the Mahaicony Hospital to mourn the loss of the seven persons.

The following day, Opposition Leader David Granger and President Donald Ramotar visited the homes of all those who perished in the so far unexplained incident.

The Government of Guyana has made several commit-

ments to assist the relatives in dealing with the tragedy which they were clearly not prepared for.

At the time of the accident, the Ministry of Public Works was carrying out works on the road which the residents had protested over days before. The road was also visited by the President and the Minister of Works one week before the accident as they sought to check on the quality of works which were under way. (Leroy Smith)

President chides ‘colonialist mentality’ in latest Amaila attack ...says misleading, nonsensical comparisons employed to discredit Govt’s Chinese partner

“IT is misleading and nonsensical to draw such a comparison,” were the words used by Government to dismiss an assertion by the Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA), which suggested that there had been some kind of corruption red flag raised in relation to the Chinese partner contracted for the construction of the Amaila Falls Hydro Electric Project.

Government, in a strongly worded response to the GHRA’s release which attempted to attack the progress being made in the development of the Hydropower Project, lamented the association’s attempt at “drawing incorrect and misleading implications of a recommendation made for Norway’s Pension Fund.”

Head of State, President Donald Ramotar, also weighed in on the most recent attack in light of his recent push to revitalise the project and, according to the President, the colonialist mentality of some in the Opposition is appalling.

In an invited comment to this newspaper, he again

drew reference to the tremendous benefits of this major developmental project should it be realised. The President said that the very Opposition that is now seeking to derail the Amaila Falls Hydro Electric project are the very ones that had attempted hydro in the past and failed.

He noted that the recent attacks on the Chinese Contractor partnered with the Guyana Government for the Construction of the Amaila Falls project, is yet another manifestation of the xenophobic nature of some in the political Opposition.

According to the President, each project that government has partnered with the Chinese has attracted criticism, many times unjustified. President Ramotar also made it clear that his Government remains committed to delivering the Amaila Falls Hydro Electric Project.

It was pointed out that in the latest salvo by the Opposition-aligned NGO, its allegation is largely based on a corruption case in China that involves state-owned China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC).

It was made pellucid that CREC is a parent company of China Railway Group (CRG), which is in turn a parent company of China Railway First Group (CRFG).

It is this company China Railway First Group, who is the actual partner on the Amaila Falls Project.

According to the statement released Thursday evening by Government “the main parent company, CREC, is one of the world’s largest firms and has hundreds of subsidiary firms under its umbrella…Therefore, it’s very misleading and nonsensical to draw such a comparison with the partner company of the Amaila Falls Project.”

Government, in rebutting the claims by GHRA, firstly alluded to the fact that the NGO failed to point out that the Amaila Falls Project, by virtue of being developed under the governance of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), will adhere to that Institution’s strict and internationally recognised standards.

“As a member of the IDB, the Government of Norway endorses IDB’s policies including its financial and fiduciary safeguards,” the Government posited.

It also noted that the integrity concerns raised by the NGO are based on allegations made for projects taking place in China and the safeguard policies for those projects are very different from the strict IDB safeguard policies followed in the Amaila Falls Project.

It was explained for instance that, in the recommendation quoted by the NGO, it is stated that “…The CRG [has not] established a whistleblowing mechanism that allows all employees to give notice of corruption incidents anonymously and without the risk of subsequent sanctions.”

According to Government, “the IDB has strong mechanisms to protect whistleblowers.”

Government used the opportunity in rebutting the misleading statement by the GHRA to reiterate that it follows high standards and will continue to defend against baseless attacks that try to derail Guyana’s development.

“The Amaila Falls Hydropower Project has best in class international partners and is being developed according to the highest standards, and it will deliver transformative social and economic benefits for the people and economy of Guyana…The Government of Guyana remains fully committed to realising these benefits for all Guyanese.”

The erroneous assertions initially released by GHRA were repeated by two private dailies. The Kaieteur News regurgitated the GHRA’s

avowal under the caption: “Stalled Amaila Falls hydro project…Norway’s Ethics Council warns of corruption with Chinese company.”

The Stabroek News’s article was captioned “Norway ethics body blacklists parent company of proposed Amaila builder - recommends it be excluded from country’s sovereign fund.”

President Ramotar only recently reiterated that the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project remains the number one priority of his administration and he remains hopeful the mega-project would become a reality.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) power station at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara recently and said efforts are being made to restart work on the

transformative project before year-end.

He said a lot of work has already been done on the project, and he pointed out that Norway has already transferred US$80 million to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in this regard.

“We have already identified another company to step into the shoes of Black Stone and Sithe Global. We are working feverishly to conclude this arrangement, so that, hopefully, we can start construction very soon,” President Ramotar said.

He pointed out that, through the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) agreement with Norway, some US$150 million of the US$250 million have already been disbursed to Guyana.

State closes case in Neesa Gopaul murder trial

THE state yesterday closed its case in the death of former Queen’s College Student Neesa Gopaul after calling its final witness to testify.

Neesa’s mother, Bibi Shareema Gopaul also known as “Naree,” and step-father, Jarvis “Barry’”Small, are on trial at the High Court in Georgetown for Neesa’s gruesome murder, which allegedly took place sometime between September 24 and October 2, 2010.

A total of 26 witnesses have testified for the state,whose case is that on October 2, 2010, the headless remains of a female were discovered at a location along the Soesdkye-Linden Highway, tucked inside a suitcase that was partially submerged in a creek. A rope was wrapped around the suitcase and dumbbells were attached at one end, apparently in an effort to keep the body under water.

In addition to the body, a passport bearing the name Neesa Lalita Gopaul was also found. The teenager was reported missing just days before the discovery was made.

Subsequent to the discovery of the body, Bibi Gopaul and her ex-paramour, Small, were arrested and charged for the murder.

The case is being presented by State Prosecutors Diana Kaulesar, Mercedes Thompson and Stacy Gooding.

Neesa Gopaul De Nobrega, also known as Simone King took the stand before Justice Navindra Singh and a mixed jury and revealed what she was told by accused Gopaul, concerning the death of her daughter.

Cross- examination

by Defence The cross- examination of witness Simone Diane De Nobrega continued yesterday,by defence counsel George Thomas.

He suggested to the witness that she was making up her story and she responded in the negative.

Counsel further suggested to De Nobrega, that it was she who had invited Bibi Gopaul to her cell as opposed to the accused being placed by the police . She responded yes.

In addition, he put the question to the witness that she had invited the accused because she wanted to discuss things with her. De Nobrega replied, “She was my friend.”

He asked when the wit-

ness was first bailed, and she responded that she was granted bail, but remained in the lock -ups until her mother had accumulated the money to post surety.

He further questioned if the witness and Gopaul had a problem with each other at the East La Penitence lockups. De Nobrega replied, “Yes, after she found out that I was talking to the police.”

Thomas asked the witness: “When you first met the number two accused, you enquired about her financial status? And asked her to assist you with your bail?

De Nobrega swiftly responded, “That is not true,” “my mother bailed me.”

Thomas then suggested that the problem between Gopaul and De Nobrega had occurred before she went to the police; the witness however disagreed.

Another suggestion by the defence was that the witness has no proof that Bibi Gopaul had said those things to her. She answered, “She said these things to me.”

Another question pro-

posed by the defence, was that the number two accused never told the witness that Emerald Tower was Neesa’s favourite place. The witness responded, yes she told me that is Neesa’s favourite place.

Thomas suggested to De Nobrega that during the time at East La Penitence, she was always calling the accused to go close to her. She quickly answered, “No, that’s not true we were friends.”

Subsequently, he questioned, “How many millions you earned from your fraud charges?” she responded, “I cannot answer that.”

She further stated that, “My charges were pen to paper not gruesome as murder. I did not murder my children.”

Re- examination by the Prosecution The prosecutor then question why the witness was fearful for life and not turn herself in for prison? De Nobrega responded boldly, “I knew that I would have to go to Berbice prison and that I would have been in the same institution with the number two accused.”

The witness related that, at that time she felt her life was threatened because the number two accused had razor blades place in her food. She added that there are records to prove that in the New Amsterdam prison.

Another cross- examination by defence The defence asked when

the razor blade situation took place. De Nobrega said, she went back to prison because she had missed her court date which resulted in an arrest warrant.

Counsel questioned whether Gopaul and the witness were in the same dormitory. Her answer to the question was, not in the same dormitory, but they shared the same recreational area.

The final witness called by the state was Police Denise Griffith, stationed at the Alberttown Police station.

During the year 2010, the witness related that she was the Assistant Superintendent stationed at the East La Penitence Police Station, as the officer in charge.

The police witness recounted that on October 4, 2010, Gopaul, whom she identified as the female prisoner sitting in the dock, was taken to the East La Penitence lock- ups, pending an investigation of a murder allegation.

On October 5, 2010, Simone King also known as Simone De Nobrega was taken to the said station after being brought from the New Amsterdam Prison, as a remanded prisoner on a series of fraud- related charges, said the witness.

Denise Griffith described for the court how the East La Penitence lock- ups were situated. She said it has three lock-ups, situated on the northern side of the first half of the bottom flat. The witness said each has its individual door and the first and third cells are used to house

female adult prisoners.

Denise Griffith recalled that on October 10, 2010, after 20:00hrs, she was at her residence in La Grange on the West Bank of Demerara, when she received a call on her cellular phone from Mr. George Vyphuis, retired assistant commissioner, who told her something.

The witness said that Gopaul left the East La Penitence lock- ups on October 11, 2010, for the New Amsterdam prison and returned on October 15, 2010. On Gopaul’s return at the East La Penitence lock- ups, the witness recollected that she went to cell number one, which at that time was housing De Nobrega. She added that only accused Gopaul and De Nobrega were occupying the cell at that time.

Both of them were in the facility until, October 20, 2010 and Gopaul left for the New Amsterdam prison.

During his cross-examination, Attorney-at-Law Thomas, asked the witness, if it came to her attention that De Nobrega said something about the number two accused (Gopaul), and she responded yes.

Another question raised by the defence was, from October 20, 2010 to June 7, De Nobrega was in custody at the East La Penitence lock- ups, but when Gopaul was brought to Georgetown, De Nobrega was taken to the Beterverwagting lock- ups.

The court was adjourned and the defence will make their legal submissions on Monday, March 2.

President Ramotar meets Essequibo centenarian

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar while on a twoday visit to the Essequibo Coast on Wednesday and Thursday took time off from his busy schedule to visit a 103- year -old resident of Aurora village.

The President embraced the centurion and said that he was very happy to meet him. The 103 –year- old man who is still in good health, told the President that he was

happy to meet him and that he had bathed and dressed himself and waited for him to come.

In a conversation with the President, the centurion Mr Ram John Mohamed Khan said he is a die-hard member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and he will die a member of the party. Mr Khan said he is looking forward to vote again for the PPP/C on May 11. The 103- year-old man said the

PPP/C is the right party for Guyana.

Ram John, who served the Huist Diren mosque as an Imam for some 45 years is the father of 12 children, seven boys and five girls.Former Member of Parliament Mr Farouk Khan, who is a standing member of the PPP, is one of his sons.

His granddaughter Afara Khan is one of the leading doctors at the Charity Hospital.

Judge upholds no-case submissions in New Amsterdam vendor murder case - deems main witness’s testimony manifestly unreliable

JUSTICE Brassington Reynolds on Thursday upheld a no-case submission and directed the mixed jury to return a verdict of not guilty in favour of murder accused Troy Holligan and Ojay Gourie.

Addressing the freed men, Justice Reynolds said: “Seize the opportunity to make use of your life. You are free to go.”

Within seconds, the men had flown into the arms of overjoyed relatives, overpowered by relief and euphoria, with tears streaming down their faces.

“It’s (been) five years,” they recounted as they referred to their period of incarceration as remand prisoners.

State Counsel Ms Judith Mursalin was congratulated for her fairness, while Defence lawyer Peter Hugh was praised for his astuteness.

Earlier, Justice Reynolds noted that the evidence of Kumarie Samaroo was so manifestly unreliable as to misidentify the men in the dock. Further, the witness, in her evidence, had claimed to have seen the men in her home on March 27 2010,

but at the time when the identification parade was conducted, she never submitted a statement to support her claim.

Justice Reynolds noted that it was at the magistrate’s court during the preliminary investigations that the witness first made mention of seeing the accused persons.

Justice Reynolds was also alarmed at the evidence of Deputy Police Superintendent Steven Booker, who had failed to adhere to the rules of an identification parade by failing to have persons in the lineup with similar physical characteristics.

It was further noted that the identical eight men were held in the lineup of both parades, although Holligan and Gourie are very different in physical appearance from those men.

Booker told the court that he had conducted separate identification parades at 15:55 hrs and at 15:58 hrs respectively on April 22, 2010 at the Whim Police Station, and that the main prosecution witness, Kumarie Samaroo, had taken seconds to identify the accused men.

Hansraj Samaroo and his wife Kumarie in happier times However, policeman Lawrence Thomas told the court that he had taken the suspects from Central Police Station at 16:15hrs on April 22, 2010 and had proceeded to the Whim Police Station, where the identification parade was held.

Justice Reynolds noted that Kumarie Samaroo had said in her evidence that she had taken twenty minutes and ten minutes respectively to identify the suspects, instead of seconds as stated by Officer Booker.

It was, moreover, observed that Booker had himself misidentified the accused men in the dock.

Justice Reynolds observed that there was nothing from the police which constituted a basis for the arrest of the accused men.

It was further observed that the evidence of Government Pathologist Dr. Vivikanand Brijmohan, who performed a post mortem on March 30, 2010, revealed that death was due to a lacerated femoral wound, and the findings were not linked to gunshot injury, as the prosecution wanted the court to believe.

In her opening address, the Assistant Director of Public Prosecution said that at sometime around 19:00 hrs on the evening of March 27, 2010, New Amsterdam

market vendors Hansraj Samaroo and his wife Kumarie were at their home at Hampshire Village, Corentyne. Hansraj was watching television in the living room in the upper flat of the two-storeyed building whilst his wife was cooking in the kitchen downstairs.

The lights were on in the house, and as Kumarie was cooking, she was confronted by a man with a gun. She called out to her husband, and the man with the gun used the inner stairs and went up to where her husband was. She then heard what sounded like a gunshot being discharged.

Kumarie then went upstairs and observed the said man with the gun. She also saw her husband standing there bleeding from his groin.

Kumarie also saw two other men, who were also armed with what appeared to be guns. She was relieved of a total of G$600,000 and US$1500, which was in her wardrobe, along with five gold bangles and five gold finger rings valued at $400,000, which she had on her person.

The injured Hansraj Samaroo was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, but was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he died on March 28, 2010.

North Ruimveldt Secondary now an A-List school

The North Ruimveldt Secondary School

THE Ministry of Education, yesterday, commissioned North Ruimveldt Secondary School (NRSS) as an A-List School and also launched its first Interactive smart classroom.

According to the Education Ministry, there are five National or Senior Secondary Schools in Guyana and now they have addead North Ruimveldt Secondary School to that list. There are also Junior Secondary schools in the school system located in all the administrative Regions of Guyana. Schools in Guyana are categorised as List A to List D, based on the performance of that school at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held in the Sylvester Hall, Education Minister Priya Manickchand explained that she is very proud of the performance of North Ruimveldt Secondary School, and it is the only school in Guyana that has worked from a B-List school to A-list one. This is evident in the results at the CSEC examinations and it is only possible through the hard work of the teachers, parents and students.

She reiterated that the Education sector receives the bulk of the national budgetary allocations and this is the reason for the ministry being able to make so many investments into the children’s education.

She noted too that the Ministry can now boast that 90% of our children that are of secondary school age can access secondary education. “Within the last five years, the ministry has constructed eight new secondary schools, giving more children the opportunity to access an education,” she explained.

She also re-emphasised that, in 1995, the country had a dropout rate of 11% of the 35,000 students of secondary age. “In 2014 our dropout rate is 2% of the 67,000 students of secondary age; we have been able to almost double the number of children attending school and have still been able to reduce the dropout rate”, she said.

According to the Minister, the staff comprises 37 out of the requirement of 38 teachers and the school is also currently offering 24 subjects, and, as an A-List school, it will now be offering an additional 4 subjects. These are Mechanical Engineering, Physical Education and Sport, and Physical and Visual Arts.

She urged all the stakeholders involved to pay attention to the school because, “I am saying to you now, if you are not careful, you will see how the things you have

worked for could slide back because progress, whether it’s in a school or a country, is easy to reverse if you don’t have strong leadership that understand what needs to be done.”

Also echoing the Minister’s words and urging the persons involved to continue with the commitment shown to the students and teachers of the school was Chief Education Officer Olato Sam. He said,“A successful school is one which is constantly improving”, as he noted that this school has over the years been able to re-classify itself, moving from a D-List school to a B-List school and now to an A-List School.

Sam paid tribute to former headmistress Dianne Peters, explaining that if it was not for the vision, hard work and

determination of this individual, the school would not have achieved this honour. He urged other teachers and heads of schools “to take a page out of Ms Peters’ book” and move their schools forward.

Relating to the persons gathered, former headmistress Dianne Peters, explained that when she decided to take up the challenge at the school, she embraced the school improvement plan that was set out. “I came here and went through the results and the staff information and got to work… I decided that within the next five years this school will see an improvement”, she said.

And indeed that was what happened, when in 2011, five years after Peters took up the post, it was awarded the most improved school. She stressed that for this to be a reality all stakeholders had to work together.

CARICOM heads agree to focus on sports tourism and cultural industries

(CARICOM Secretariat) CARICOM heads have decided to place emphasis on developing cultural and creative industries and a sports sector to boost their economies.

The announcement was made at the closing press conference for the two-day 26th Inter-sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government on Friday afternoon by Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government and Prime Minister of The Bahamas Hon. Perry Christie.

“We are now recognising that some other countries have made a success by exploiting the indigenous talent of their people [and] we expect the Community to keep this as a major issue before it”, Minister Christie said.

The decision came following a presentation made by former Prime Minster of Jamaica Hon. P.J. Patterson on leveraging the Region’s human, natural and cultural assets for the ben-

efit of the Community. Mr. Patterson in that presentation urged the heads to

such as cultural industries and sports.

The heads agreed that they would create the necessary legislation to advance the creative industries and to establish sustainable financing mechanisms in collaboration with the CARICOM Development Fund and the Caribbean Development Bank together with the private sector. It was announced that The Bahamas would take a leadership role in promoting this new thrust.

In relation to the marijuana debate, Prime Minister Christie informed that the CARICOM leaders agreed on the composition of the marijuana commission that will begin work to review the social, economic, health and legal issues surrounding its use. In responding to questions regarding its legalisation, Prime Minister of Barbados, Hon. Freundel Stuart, said Heads would not rush into a decision; and that a select number of persons with the required skill set to

further probe the issue, would be doing the relevant research and provide the heads with recommendations.

The functions of a committee of ambassadors to improve the implementation and overall governance of the Community was also approved.

This committee will work closely with the organs and bodies of the Community, the CARICOM Secretariat, Community Institutions and Associate Institutions to establish and maintain an efficient system of consultations.

The meeting agreed to set up a committee of Finance Ministers to work with the Caribbean Association of Banks to devise a plan to address the Region being unjustly labelled as a high risk area for financial services. “Unless this situation is addressed with urgency, the indigenous banks in each of our countries will be adversely affected”, Prime Minister Christie said.

Address economic challenges to the Region – CARICOM Outgoing Chair

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) PRIME Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Hon. Gaston Browne, called on the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to jointly and aggressively address the EU policy to end the existing cap on European sugar beet production from the end of next year. He also called for action to avert the potential threat to the Region’s banking sector, given its label as a “high risk area for financial services”.

He called on the Conference to establish a committee of Finance Ministers to address this urgent issue, which he described as calamitous to the Region’s economies.

CARICOM’s Strategic Plan identifies the building of economic resilience – stabilisation and sustainable economic growth and development as one of eight strategic priorities for attention over the next five years (2015-2019).

She has told this publication that her Bollywood Café Radio Show attracts more than two million listeners worldwide!

Since the launch of NTN’s 89.1 FM, ‘The Pulse of Guyana’, there has been no letting up; its personnel are quite boastful about it, and the company has since had the international voice of ‘Desi Girl’ Wendy Khan on the 89.1FM radio.

The Bollywood Café Radio Show has several features highlighting Bollywood songs and local Caribbean musical artistes, bringing the East and West together.

In an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle, Wendy Khan explained that it’s a privilege and honour to be asked by management to attend the launch of the television station in Berbice.

She explained: “I have been with NTN Radio since September 2013, that’s since they launched their radio station.” As she recounted her experience of just over a year, she explained that she is proud to have been able to entertain so many persons through this show.

reach is Guyana, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Khan said: “I have a variety of audiences tuning in to listen to the show, where the coverage area is Guyana, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. I also have an international audience that would stream the programme online.”

As a media personality, Khan has made numerous stage appearances, hosting

concerts and events from Bollywood to New York, to South America and the Caribbean Islands. In 2009 and 2010, she acted in a musical/drama, “Off Broadway,” at the New Age Theatre in NYC, joining a huge cast of talented artistes in making history for the West Indian communities throughout the tri-state area as the first West Indian drama to hit NYC.

In 2011, “Desi Girl” made her debut on the television screen in Guyana with great success, and later went on to co-host the Kumar Sanu Concert in Guyana and Trinidad, aside from making a special appearance as a co-host for the 2013 Chutney Soca Monarch held in Trinidad in January 2013.

explained: “Being that I am part of the NTN media team, management felt that it would be nice for me to attend the television launch in Berbice, since I have a connection with the Guyanese people through my radio show.”

She noted that the launch is all about expanding and being able to bring more entertainment to the people; and she said: “I also want to be able to share this experience through my show.”

Khan noted that she has never done anything on the television for NTN, but she had this to say for her future with NTN: “why not! I can try my hand at it. NTN is one of the leading stations here in Guyana, and I see a brighter future for them.”

Khan explained that she

is looking forward to the expansion of NTN, and “hopefully, in the future, they will be able to expand the radio as well in other areas.”

Khan is an acclaimed television and radio personality who has won numerous awards and recognition for Best TV Personality. She was also awarded the U.S. Congressional Award for Media, and the NYS Woman of Distinction Award for outstanding community services from the New York State.

GGMC employee executed on EBD Highway

…linked to two similar shootings – Police source

TREVOR Abrams, 30, a technician attached to the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, was executed yesterday afternoon as he drove his recently acquired Toyota Allion car along the East Bank Demerara Public Road in the vicinity of Little Diamond.

The Guyana Chronicle was informed that the man was heading to the city when

another vehicle pulled up alongside his car and someone fired at him. The GGMC worker was struck several time about the body and his vehicle ended up in the nearby canal.

Public spirited persons quickly pulled the wounded man from his vehicle and rushed him to the Diamond Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Last week Wednesday Singh was sitting outside his business place with an employee when a lone gunman showed up and opened fire on them. Singh was killed

on the spot.

While Otis Grant survived an execution attempt on Mashramani morning when two men opened fire on him causing him to return fire, upon which they fled.

Grant is presently a patient at a city hospital.

The entire fallout is said to be in relation to a deal that went sour over a property that Singh recently acquired, but failed to honour his financial obligations to persons who were concerned with the transaction.

COPA Airlines to service three new destinations COPA Airlines on February 25 announced the addition of three more destinations to its route: Villahermosa and Puebla, Mexico, and New Orleans, capital of Louisiana in the United States (US).

Copa announced the new destinations, which strengthen the “Hub of the Americas” position as the most efficient hub offering the best connectivity in Latin America, and outlined the airline’s 2014 achievements during an event in Panama.

The airline will offer four flights per week to each of the three new destinations and will begin non-stop service to New Orleans on June 24, to Villahermosa on July 31, and to Puebla on Aug. 4. With this announcement, Copa will now be servicing 11 U.S. destinations and six in Mexico once the new flights begin. Officials at the airline noted that “It will grow 7% in 2015, and expects to transport approximately 12 million passengers for the year, an increase of more than 600,000 passengers over 2014.

“Our sustained growth in the last few years has allowed us to strengthen our leadership position in the Region and es-

African bees emerge from tomb to invade Good Hope Primary – six students stung in episode

ANGRY African bees last week swarmed Good Hope Primary School on the Essequibo Coast, causing pandemonium in that learning institution; disrupting classes, routing teachers and pupils alike on to the public road, and causing six students to have to be rushed for medical treatment.

Reportedly emerging from an old tomb in a cemetery located in close proximity to the school, the swarm of angry bees troubled the

residents of Good Hope and Supenaam communities until they joined forces and eradicated the dangerous nuisance from the tomb, so classes at the school could resume.

The school was closed last Monday and Tuesday.

Teachers and students tried to enter the building on Wednesday, but were again attacked by the African bees. There were no classes on that day, but classes have currently resumed in full operation. (Rajendra Prabhulall)

Pathologist says tattooed Maryann had 35 incised wounds

THE judge and jury in the case of the murdered tattooed woman, Maryann Sunita Nauth, were told that she had 35 incised wounds about her body and that she had died of shock and haemorrhage.

Nauth’s body was found in a hotel room in 2013.

Expert in the field of pathology, Dr. Nehaul Singh, who had performed the post-mortem on May 15, 2013, told this to Presiding Judge Franklyn Holder and the jury at the Demerara Assizes on Friday.

According to the doctor, the heart was punctured and the lungs had collapsed.

Dr. Singh, who claimed that he has done more than 20,000 post-mortems, disclosed that upon external examination of the body he had found over 35 incised wounds: on the neck, forearm, armpit, abdomen, left wrist, 14 incised wounds to the left side of the chest and two incised wounds to the heart.

On being shown a kitchen knife looking like a dagger, the doctor told the prosecutrix that the particular exhibit of the court was capable of inflicting the injuries found on the body of the woman.

In answer to veteran counsel for the defence, Mr. Compton Richardson, witness said that it was possible that the wounds could have been inflicted by a male or female.

Following the discovery

of the woman’s body in room No. 209 of the K & V C hotel on May 12, police investigations led to the arrest of the woman’s husband, Vinod Balgobin and him being charged with her murder.

In a caution statement to the police, Balgobin is alleged to have confessed to the crime and is recorded as saying that having some drinks that day, he took his estranged wife to the hotel and paid $3,000. for the room.

But according to him, all went well until she had stripped and he observed that she was carrying a tattoo across the abdomen. That he said led to an argument between them after he accused her of giving him “blow.”

He got vexed and “jooked” her up with his knife, he allegedly told the police.

This story, his lawyer said, had been fabricated by the police.

On the resumption yesterday, Police Photographer PC17860 Maxwell Grant was cross-examined by defence counsel Mr. Richardson.

Grant admitted that he saw a photograph near the body on the bed. But he said that it did not occur to him that he should have taken that photograph to be analysed for fingerprints.

The prosecution closed its case following completion of the doctor’s evidence and after testimonies from 18 witnesses.

The defence will begin on Monday.

Disagreement led to ‘Buddy’s’ murder

…‘Buddy’ was stabbed to death, jury told AT the opening of the Powley murder trial at the Demerara Assizes yesterday, the prosecution disclosed that evidence would be led to show that Vishnauth Narine, called “Buddy,” was stabbed following a disagreement between the two men.

Prosecutrix Miss Narissa Leander in delivering her opening address to the jury on Friday, told them: On the 8th of June 2012 the accused Michael Powley and the deceased Vishnauth Narine, called “Buddy,” had a disagreement.

According to Miss Leander, “As a result, the accused went into the yard of the deceased and stood in front the deceased mother’s house,

located at Plastic City jetty, Vreed-en-Hoop.

“While there, the accused and the deceased continued to argue. Evidence will be led to show that the deceased came downstairs and the accused started running him around.

“The deceased ran over to a neighbour’s yard and the accused ran behind him.

While running Buddy, now deceased, slid by a fence and witnesses will say that the accused stabbed him with an object.

“The deceased was taken to a hospital where he died as a result of the stab wound.

The hearing continues on Monday and Justice James Bovell-Drakes is presiding.

EPA conducting stake-out exercises within littering hotspots -polluters will be fined, issued a Clean-up/Litter Removal Order

IN their efforts to combat the illegal dumping of solid waste along Mandela Avenue during last year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the Litter Enforcement Unit is currently conducting stake-out exercises within this littering hotspot.

According to the agency, through a statement released yesterday, residents within East and West Ruimveldt areas are advised that identified polluters will be fined $50,000 and issued a Clean-up/Litter Removal Order.

The statement further disclosed that investigations done at this ‘hot-spot’ on February 19, 2015, revealed the identity of several residents who were caught committing the act of improper solid waste disposal. These persons were: Mr. Lynden Colin Shipley of East Ruimveldt, Mr. Nicholas Jermaine Cameron of East Ruimveldt, and Ms. Grenda Smith of West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme. “The Agency intends to take legal action against these

individuals and others found littering and illegally dumping,” the EPA admonished.

An illegal dumpsite on Mandela Avenue just outside the Guyana Water Inc. Litter Enforcement Unit will continue to work closely with the Georgetown Solid Waste Management Department in tackling this prevalent issue of illegal dumping which continues to plague the city.

From their investigations, the agency was able to record Ms. Kamwattie Boodhoo of C&F Supermarket located on Regent Street as a polluter. The discovery was made through business documents including bills and statements at an illegal dump site at Church and Camp Streets.

Also, the dumping of construction waste was acknowledged by Mr. G. Basdeo of Regency Hotel Inc. who, the EPA said, “improperly disposed of the waste on the government reserve in front of Regency Hotel Inc.” Both parties, they said, acknowledged their wrongdoing and were issued a Fixed Penalty of $15, 000,

and a Clean-up Order to remove the waste in their respective areas.

THE FIXED PENALTY To this end, the EPA reiterated that the Litter Regulations state that, “depositing litter in a public place and on other people’s property without their consent is a criminal offence.”

If found guilty, they said, fines ranging from $50,000 for individuals, and $100,000 for businesses must be paid; should an offender accept responsibility for their actions, a fixed penalty of $15,000 is issued which is to be paid within 10 days. “If the same person is caught a second time committing the same offence, then the fine attached to the offence is doubled,” the agency said.

first distribution for 2015 FOOD for the Poor (FFP) Guyana Limited yesterday kicked off its string of charitable events by holding its first public distribution programme at the FFP complex in Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

Speaking during an interview with the Guyana Chronicle yesterday at the event, FFP’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Wayne Hamilton disclosed: “Today is our first distribution for the year, and it’ll be followed by more, as we do two distributions per month not only in Georgetown, but also in other areas such as the East Coast Demerara (ECD), West Coast Demerara (WCD)…”

Hamilton said the items that were

given out yesterday varied from tons of stationery to food products, to other basic necessities which would be of use to the beneficiaries. He added that FFP catered for approximately 600 persons who are not all from the area but come from far-flung areas as well, because FFP tries to advertise the event as much as possible before the actual day.

“We gave preference to visibly impaired and senior citizens by ensuring that they receive their stuff as fast as possible, so as to avoid the haste,” he said.

He also said that some of the items distributed came from local donors, and some came from foreign donors who identify with FFP throughout the year.

He added “Sport and culture contribute tremendously in satisfying the material needs as a people and give our country recognition so that we can promote our country as a destination where people would want to come and see.”

It is the hope of the current administration to see the entire country benefiting from having stateof-the-art facilities in their communities, but President Ramotar said “while we might be able at this point in time to put one of these facilities in each and every community across the country, I’m hoping that we can still spot the talent and bring them to the international facility so that they can properly develop themselves in the process”.

AB de Villiers carnage drives South Africa to record win

(REUTERS) - AB de Villiers confirmed his status as the most destructive batsman in cricket with a magnificent unbeaten 162 from just 66 balls to lead South Africa to a record 257-run victory over West Indies in the World Cup yesterday.

South Africa’s tally of 408 for five was the second highest posted in a World Cup match and a shellshocked West Indies could only manage 151 in reply, Chris Gayle backing up his record 215 against Zimbabwe on Tuesday with a paltry three.

It was the joint fourth largest margin of victory by runs in a one-day international and also equalled the largest margin in a World Cup match, matching India’s 257-run win over Bermuda in 2007. de Villiers earlier continued his one-man mission to redefine limited overs batting with the quickest century in one-day internationals on Australian soil (52 balls) and the fastest 150 ever in the 50-over format (64 balls).

Utilising his full repertoire of strokes in an awesome display of batting, he flogged the West Indies bowlers with eight sixes and 17 fours in a 104-minute

knock that will live long in the memory.

His last 50 runs came off just 12 balls and brought the 23 612 crowd at a sun-bathed Sydney Cricket Ground to their feet chanting “AB!, AB!, AB!”.

South Africa were desperate to kick-start their campaign after their 130-run defeat to India in their last Pool B match and de Villiers ensured they would.

The 31-year-old shared stands of 134 runs with Rilee Rossouw (61), 48 with David Miller (20) and an unbeaten 80 in 3.2 overs with Farhaan Behardien to turn around his country’s innings after West Indies had made a promising start to the match.

West Indies captain Jason Holder, who had bowled two maidens, taken one wicket and conceded nine runs in his first five overs, ended up with figures of 1-104 after giving up 64 runs in his last two overs.

2022 World Cup final no later than December 18, says Blatter

By Mike Collett BELFAST, Ireland (Reuters) - The World Cup final in Qatar in 2022 should be played no later than December 18, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said yesterday.

Blatter, who arrived in Northern Ireland for this weekend’s International Football Association Board (IFAB) meeting, said he would propose that idea to the FIFA executive committee when it meets next month.

UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, said this week that it wanted the World Cup to start on November 26 and end on December 23, two days before Christmas.

“The World Cup will not go on until the 23rd, definitely not, we have to stop at the 18th,” Blatter told reporters.

“I am against going to the 23rd.”

they are not very happy, and although there is noise about FIFA and the World Cup in Qatar we have seven years to prepare for it,” Blatter said.

“Where this is a good will, there will be a solution and I am sure everyone will be fine.”

pensated as a result of their season’s being interrupted, but Blatter confirmed what his secretary-general Jerome Valcke said earlier.

“I don’t think they should be (compensated),” Blatter said.

“But I was in contact with Karl-Heinz Rummennige before this decision was taken and I am sure a solution can be found.

“This is football. The European clubs are not so happy but they should be in solidarity. This is the important thing.

“There are problems and discussions and the problems need to be solved.”

Blatter is in Belfast for the annual meeting of IFAB, soccer’s ultimate law-making body.

DENNIS Andries was 26 years old when he received the third defeat of his professional career.

Andries lost his Commonwealth light heavyweight title to Bunny Johnson on February 27, 1980 at the Adulte Ballroom in Staffordshire, United Kingdom.

Johnson, a Jamaican who resided in England, won the 15-round fight via points decision. It was the second time that the two had met in the ring. The first was a 10-round affair staged in January 1979 and Johnson emerged the winner.

Andries started professional boxing on May 16, 1978. He became the European light heavyweight champion, the World Boxing Council light heavyweight champion and later the Commonwealth cruiserweight champion.

He won the WBC title following a split decision victory over J. B. Williamson on April 30, 1986. Andries made one successful defence before meeting the feared Thomas `Hitman’ Hearns in March 1987.

The `Hitman’ didn’t fire blanks and snatched the crown via a 10th round TKO. However, Andries bounced back and was again named WBC champion when he TKOed Tony Willis on February 21, 1989 to take the vacant title.

Although born in Guyana, Andries never fought at home. His career spanned 18 years and Andries had his last fight on December 14, 1996. He left with a record of 49 victories (30 KOs), 14 defeats and two draws. He will turn 62 in November.

NOTABLE DATES MICHAEL Benjamin was a lightweight boxer when he knocked out Barbadian Angus Alleyne on February 28, 1988 in Guyana.

Referee Eion Jardine waved it off at two minutes 35 seconds of the first round to hand Benjamin his third first-round knockout in 13 fights.

Ferocious, courageous and tenacious Benjamin, born in March 1966, was one of the most feared boxers in Guyana at one time. As a lightweight and welterweight Benjamin possessed power, speed and an appetite for destruction.

He turned pro in 1986 and was 4-0 when he met Venezuelan Eduardo Linares on January 25, 1987. A knockout provided his fifth victory. A total boxing package, `Benjie’ could be a slugger if the occasion called for it, or, in another instance, a master boxer.

However, like every boxer, Benjamin met his match on February 6, 1993 and Irishman Eamonn Loughram was in a no-nonsense mood when he met the Guyanese in Cardiff, Wales.

Loughram won via sixth-round knockout knocked out to retain his Commonwealth welterweight title and hand the stocky Guyanese his fifth defeat. The Irishman won the World Boxing Organisation welterweight title in his next fight while

Benjamin suffered two other successive knockouts.

Benjamin opted out of the ring in 2000 and his record includes 23 wins (14 KOs), eight defeats and two draws. At present he is one of Guyana’s most qualified sport journalists. Benjamin is now on a drive to preserve the history of Guyana’s boxing and has collaborated with the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) to launch a programme to document the history of the sport in Guyana.

Raphael DeGroot, Ashley Khalil star on third night RAPHAEL DeGroot and Ashley Khalil were the stars on Thursday night when the Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA) Bounty Farm Ltd/Digicel-sponsored squash tournament continued at the Georgetown Club courts with play in both Category A and Open and spectators were entertained by several close and high quality matches.

In what turned out to be the feature match of the night Javid Rahaman (+3 handicap) was up against Raphael De Groot (-13).

Rahaman won the first game relatively easily as he reached ten points before DeGroot had scored and eventually won the game 15-7.

In the second game Rahaman again reached to ten points with DeGroot on zero and at 14-6 match ball, it seemed as it was all over for DeGroot, but this was not to be as he clawed his way back one point at a time before eventually winning the second game 18-16.

In the third game Rahaman reached nine points before DeGroot opened his account but could get no further than thirteen as the former completed a remarkable

comeback victory by winning the third game 15-13.

In the match-up between two female national players, Ashley Khalil (-3) and Ashley De Groot (+1), Ashley Khalil won the first game comfortably 15-8 but the second game was a different affair as firstly, Ashley Khalil had match point at 14-12 but then Ashley De Groot won the next three points to have game ball at 15-14 and then another game point at 17-16 before Ashley Khalil finally won the game 21-19 and the match.

In Category ‘A’, the James Mekdeci (+7) against Kamir Khan also +7 was the highlight of the evening.

James won an extremely close first game 19-17, but Kamir bounced back to win the second game easily 1511.

The third game went back and forth and with Kamir leading 12-8, it seemed as if he would go on to take the match but James won the next six points to have match point at 14-12 and eventually won 16-14.

TROPHY Stall of Bourda Market is the latest body to lend its support to the E-Networks CrossFit games set for tomorrow at the National Park tarmac.

The company yesterday presented to Genesis Fitness Express and Fitness Express trophies for the top male and female winners, 1st through 3rd, and a trophy for the best gym.

Nine teams are competing against each other from 10.00hrs in five events – totalling 15 exercises. The teams will compete in four events. From that four – the top six individual male athletes and top three female athletes will be selected to contest the fifth and final round.

From here the individual winners, 1 to 3 will be decided.

The combined scores at

the end of the four rounds will determine the fittest team, while the fifth and final round is the test to determine the fittest male and female individuals.

The fittest male and female will each receive one airline ticket to one of Copa Airlines’ 70 destinations.

The teams competing are the U.S. Embassy, Life Fitness, Top End, CrossFit Bel Air, Elite Systems, Fitness Paradise, Bodymaxx, Interline Fitness and the Guyana Defence Force who were given a bye to tomorrow’s games.

There are 15 judges – 12 will start the day with three on rotation.

Of them, King said, “We’ve been meeting consistently with the judges so this (Wednesday’s preliminary round) gave them a feel of what the actual games will

be like and also the athletes.

“So we’re expecting that everybody is ready to go.”

The judges for this event are drawn from across the fitness family in Guyana - some are current athletes such as Mr Guyana Kerwin Clarke, Ms Flex Night Bikini winner Shawnell Warner and former Mr Guyana Sylvon Gardner, Powerlifting executive members and ‘Big John’ Edwards and Paul Adams, personal trainers Aubrey Henry and Floyd Ferreira and bodybuilding judge David Gomes.

Swimmers gunning for CARIFTA timings Ministry of Local Government triumph at GASA Mash Meet today and tomorrow in Mashramani dominoes competition

The victorious MoLGRD dominoes team proudly display broad smiles and their trophies, following their triumph over Hand-in-Hand and NIS last Friday.

WITH their opponents being very vocal throughout the contest, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development (MoLGRD) weathered the storm to come out on top in the specially-organised Mashramani dominoes competition, over Hand-in-Hand Insurance and the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) respectively.

The vocal opposing teams were thrashed by the pulsating, jubilant players of MoLGRD who were spearheaded by the captain, Narine Ramroop, at the Hand-in-Hand Insurance Sports Club last Friday evening.

After the fifth round, NIS and MoLGRD were neck and neck on 65 points leaving Hand-in-Hand battling for survival on 53

points and in the last round, MoLGRD rose above the storm with a total of 82 points leaving Hand-in-Hand with 62 points and NIS in the cellar on 76 points.

Narine proved a point by emerging victorious. He was forced to endure long weeks of verbal debates on who are the real dominoes players leading up to the competition among the teams. Bank of Guyana was replaced by NIS. At the presentation ceremony, Jermin Weeks, of MoLGRD, was awarded best player by scoring three sixes and was well supported by team members Carlos James, Royston Lyttle, Lewis Kilnkenny, and Misir Oudit.

THE Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) season is set to kick off with this weekend’s hosting of its annual Mashramani Swim Meet which is scheduled to be held at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal.

The meet is expected to be held simultaneously with the Annual General Meeting (AGM) today at the same venue staring at 15.00hrs. At the AGM the association is expected to lay out its plans for the future of the sport.

Meanwhile, as the twoday competition gets under way in the pool, many of the swimmers will be racing against the clock as they try not only to outdo their contenders but also to gain qualifying times for the upcoming CARIFTA Swimming Championships - the meet will be doubling as a CARIFTA trials.

The CARIFTA Swimming Championships, which will also involve competition in synchronised swimming and water polo, is set for March 27 – April 14 in Barbados. The swimming division of the event will be held from April 4 to 7.

So far one swimmer, Antonio Hussein, has al-

ready gained a CARIFTA ‘C’ time from his performance at Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) Invitational Swimming Championships held last December. Hussein qualified in the Boys’ 11-12 50m freestyle after clocking a time of 28.15 seconds in the event. Guyana’s current qualifying time for the event is 32.49 seconds.

Other swimmers expected to be out and hunting after

those CARIFTA timings on today include Kenita Mahaica, Nathon Hackett, Accalia Khan, Jamila Sanmoogan, Onika George, Daniel Scott, Joseph DeNobrega, Hannibal Gaskin and Omar Adams.

Sixty swimmers from five clubs across Guyana are expected to participate in the meet. The clubs are Dorado, Dolphin, Orca, Silver Sharks and Sea Otters.

Action will begin at 10:00hrs today and 11:00hrs tomorrow.

President Donald Ramotar commissions warm-up pool

HAILED as the realisation of a dream, President Donald Ramotar, yesterday declared the warm-up pool of the Liliendaal National Aquatic Centre officially open, before a diverse crowd of swimming stakeholders, school students, sporting officials, and members of the joint services, among others.

“A beautiful pool completed, and another dream realised for all of us,” was how Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony described the momentous occasion.

“Someone once said to me that when you think of swimming pools across the Caribbean you can actually count the swimming pools that are of really high standard and when they visited here and they saw this pool they said we have the Rolls Royce among pools in the Caribbean and that is saying quite something. So we are very pleased with the facility that we have.”

Spectators were enthralled by cultural displays, as they heard of the bright future that the opening of the warm-up pool promises for not only our national swimmers and the swimming fraternity, but for the Guyanese public at large. They heard of the pool’s conceptualisation and the challenges faced and overcome, in brief remarks made

by MCYS Permanent Secretary, Alfred King.

Anthony, in his speech, renewed the Ministry’s commitment to maximum utilisation of the facility, noting that the diversity of the audience was no mere coincidence, but part of the Ministry’s tactics to

highlight that all of the various institutions would be afforded the use of the pool.

“We also want to enlarge access to this pool. Right now the people who are predominantly using the pool are persons who are swimming competitively but we want to change that. With the 50m pool it was going to be a challenge for those who cannot swim, but with this warm-up pool it is not such a

Making the occasion all the more prominent was the presence of International Swimming Federation (FINA) vice-president Dale Neuburger, and South American Swimming Confederation (CONSANAT) president Juan Carlos Orihuela, both of whom are on their first visit to Guyana. In his remarks Nuebruger commended the government on the dynamic investment that they have made.

“It is a beautiful site to me, and it is a great investment, a great investment in a facility, and a great investment in our kids.”

Also making brief remarks at the ceremony was Director of Sport Neil Kumar, who noted his elation at being part of such a significant occasion.

“It is with extreme joy and a great sense of pride that I stand here this morning on the occasion of the commissioning of yet another state-of-the-art facility, here at the National Aquatic Centre,” Kumar said.

Kumar reminded the audience that the pool’s realisation was testament to the government’s commitment to the development of sport in Guyana.

“One of the many functions of the National Sports Commission and by extension, the government of Guyana, is to provide for the establishment, erection and maintenance of Sports and other recreational facilities. Friends, the construction of the National Aquatic Centre, right here, and the regular upgrade of the Colgrain Pool must be seen as serious undertaking to provide for the development of our swimmers,” Kumar said.

Holder wants Windies to quickly forget SA thrashing S Y D N E Y, A u s t r a l i a (CMC) – Captain Jason Holder says West Indies are confident of still making the second round of the World Cup of the World Cup, and has urged his side to quickly forget yesterday’s thrashing at the hands of South Africa.

West Indies entered the contest at the Sydney Cricket Ground on a run of two victories but collapsed to a 257-run defeat – the joint worst-ever defeat in World Cup history.

The loss left the Windies with just four points from four games with two games remaining in Group B, but Holder said the Windies needed to remain positive.

“Going forward into the next game, I think we need to take the positives from this game and try to go into (the game against) India

with full confidence,” he said.

“We need to put it (loss) behind us as quickly as possible but we need to look at our errors we made in this game, that’s important, and look for ways in which we can improve.

“We are very confident we can make the quarter-finals. We just need to play good cricket against India first and then take on UAE in our last game.”

Asked to bowl first, West Indies tied down the Proteas batsman initially but captain AB de Villiers arrived to lash his 20th one-day hundred, a scintillating 66-ball unbeaten 162, to transform the game.

He smashed 17 fours and eight sixes as South Africa scored 261 runs in the last 20 overs of the innings to pile up 408 for five – the

second highest total in a World Cup and the highest-ever on Australian soil.

In reply, West Indies capitulated for 151 all out off 33.1 overs, with Holder top-scoring with 56 off 48 deliveries.

The young skipper said de Villiers’ knock had made the difference in the game.

“I thought we did pretty well early on in the game with the ball. I thought we were keeping the run rate down pretty good but then AB just took the game away from us,” he pointed out.

“If you take away his innings, it was 150 runs he put on the board and it would look a totally different score if you were to take away that innings. Having said that, we dropped chances and didn’t make it easy for ourselves.”

He added: “I think psychologically, chasing 400

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar yesterday officially commissioned the GY$37.3M warm-up pool at Liliendaal and said that the occasion shows his administration’s development and investment in the country’s most valuable asset - the youths.

The warm-up pool, which is 21 metres wide, carries both a shallow end and a deep end ranging between 1.175m and 1.82m.

D & S Construction was responsible for the structurural foundation while the pre-fabricated pool was sourced from, and installed by Myrtha Pool Company at a cost of US$288,600. ; the same company that supplied the pre-fabricated structure for the initial 50m pool.

Construction of the warm-up pool, which began back in September 2013, complements the Olympic-size swimming pool which was opened in 2011 by former President Bharrat Jagdeo.

The former President at the time, made a commitment for the installation of the warm-up pool, which is one of many requirements necessary before international events can be hosted at the facility.
