Marriott Hotel already exceeding international requirements - our brand is very important, we take it seriously -General Manager

By Gary Eleazar WITH 25 years under his belt working with Marriott International—a tenure that includes the opening of seven such facilities—General Manager of the Guyana branch of the world- renowned hotel chain, Roberto Grissi, holds the conviction that its construction is exceeding many of the international standards required.

Grissi recently for the first time publicly expressed confidence in Atlantic Hotels Inc (AHI), the hotel’s owner, Shanghai Construction Group (SCG), the contractor and MA Angeliades, the supervising consultant in delivering on a project that will meet all of the requirements in order for the international hotel chain to assume operations of the facility.

Grissi made it known that the Chinese contractor has built a number of Marriott Hotels across the world as well as brands affiliated with the Marriott chain.

According to the General Manager for the Guyana Marriott, the company from the inception has been a part of

the design of the structure and had submitted the construction modules to which SCG has to maintain strict adherence.

The standards required by Marriott International are being followed by the Chinese contractor in relation to the construction of the local branch, according to Grissi.

He further stated that Marriott International’s Architectural and Construction teams would inspect the project periodically.

“We conduct evaluations…We inspect the hotel from top to bottom to ensure that in every single case the Marriott models are being followed,” said Grissi.

The general manager was also adamant that it was not just a case where persons from Marriott International would visit Guyana to conduct inspections over a two or three-day period.

He reported that on a weekly basis, the Marriott officials are in contact with the Chinese contractors reviewing the works being done, as well as rectifying any concerns that may be raised in relation to the project.

On this the occasion of Youman Nabi 2015, it is my privilege and pleasure to extend heartfelt greetings to all Guyanese but especially to our Muslim Brothers and Sisters who are today paying tribute to the life and works of the Holy Prophet. I want to join with them in honouring the Holy Prophet whose life was dedicated to the service of others and to the spread and deepening of the Islamic faith.

The Holy Prophet is recognised as one the great movers of humanity. His impact on the growth of Islam is unquestionable.

He is considered one of the great personalities to have ever walked the Earth whose impact still resonates in the world today.

During his lifetime, he preached understanding

amongst people of all faiths. It is this aspect of his teachings that I wish to highlight today as we observe his birth and life.

We here in Guyana have been spared the misfortunes and tragedies that have visited many other countries afflicted by the scourges of religious conflict. And I believe that contributing to this internal religious harmony in our country is that fact that there exists a high degree of religious tolerance and understanding amongst our peoples. This has allowed multiculturalism to flourish in our society. As we value this multiculturalism, let us appreciate the important role that understanding amongst peoples of all faiths has played in creating and promoting religious harmony in our country.

In continuing to promote religious tolerance and understanding, we are being faithful to the teachings of the Holy Prophet, whose inspirational life should continue to guide all of us, Muslims and non- Muslims alike. May the peace and blessings of Allah the almighty be with you.

Public schools reopen on Tuesday THE Ministry of Education has advised that all public schools will reopen on Tuesday, January 6, 2015.

In a press statement the Ministry is reminding all candidates enlisted to sit the January 2015 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations that those examinations will be conducted on Monday

January 5, 2015 as timetabled.

The release asks parents and guardians to note that schools will be closed on March 27, 2015 for the annual Easter Vacation and that the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) examinations will be conducted on Wednesday April 1, and Thursday April 2, 2015.

Obama’s Cuba opening hits early obstacles, faces struggle with Congress

By Roberta Rampton and Patricia Zengerle (REUTERS) - Only two-and-a-half weeks after U.S. President Barack Obama announced a historic prisoner exchange and re-establishment of long-broken ties with Cuba, his new policy is encountering obstacles that threaten to flare up when Congress returns next week.

Questions surrounding Havana’s human rights record and the promised release of Cuban detainees have the potential to inflame anti-Havana passions on Capitol Hill, where the House and Senate are expected to hold hearings soon after they resume on Tuesday.

Whether the obstacles amount in the long run to anything more than speed bumps on the way to wider detente remains to be seen. But at a minimum, they illustrate how benefits from Obama’s ditching of a half-decade of U.S. isolation of Cuba won’t come quickly or without rancorous debate.

( R E U T E R S ) - S e a rc h teams hunting for the wreck of an AirAsia passenger jet that crashed with 162 people on board have found four large parts of the plane on the sea bed, the head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said on Saturday.

A multi-national task force of ships, planes and helicopters have been scouring the northern Java Sea and coastline of southern Borneo to recover the bodies of victims and locate the wreck of Flight QZ8501 and its black box flight recorders.

“We’ve found four big parts from the plane we’re looking for,” search and rescue agency chief Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo told reporters in Jakarta.

Gamers cry foul Brazil’s Rousseff over NLCB glitch vows to tackle graft,

By Leah Sorias (TRINIDAD EXPRESS) A glitch in the National Lotteries Control Board’s (NLCB) online gaming system yesterday resulted in scores of persons being unable to cash in their winning Play Whe tickets.

The Express was told the winning number 36 (donkey) was drawn at 10.30 a.m. yesterday, however, when persons went to the various online agents to collect their cash, twhey were told it could not be paid out.

One irate man who preferred to remain anonymous came in to the Express to complain he won the “early-bird draw” but when he went to

claim his prize at an agent in Morvant, he was told there was a problem with the machines.

“They said the machines were paying out plenty less than the amount it is supposed to pay so she couldn’t give me any money. I told her that is not my problem because suppose that was my last set of money and I was depending on the winnings,” he said.

One online agent in the San Juan area said about 20 people came to collect their prizes but had to be turned away as the machines, which normally pay out $26 to every $1 wagered, was only paying out 34 cents to every $1.

The boy yesterday said he regretted capturing the assault on his cellular phone and denied the footage had been edited.

“Just how it tape, is just so it is,” he told the Express.

The boy was standing on the pavement outside the clothing store at which he works when the incident started unfolding around 4 p.m. last Saturday.

“It was funny at the beginning to put up

in the books (Facebook).... I didn’t know the man was going to get slap.”

He said he now has regrets.

“People only coming and bothering me every day.... If I see anything again, I not taping it.”

A male relative said the boy was living in fear for his life.

He said other police officers have been targeting the teen.

The boy said instead of turning to social media to upload the video, he should have instead deleted the recording from his phone.

The video, which is less than two minutes long and has been viewed by thousands of people, has since been deleted from his Facebook account.

A copy of the footage has been taken by police officers, the male relative said.

BRASILIA (Brazil) (AFP) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff kicked off a second term, vowing to tackle corruption and revamp the economy as her government reels from a series of setbacks.

Brazil’s economy, once booming, has barely grown during Rousseff’s time in office, and her administration is embroiled in a multimillion-dollar graft scandal at state-owned oil giant Petrobras.

But the former guerrilla promised to face the scandal head on, vowing to punish anyone found guilty of illicit dealings.

“We are going to rigorously investigate everything that has happened,” the leftist Rousseff said, speaking at the ceremony attended by the US and Chinese vice presidents as well as 13 heads of state, most from Latin America.

Guyana Editorial CHEERS FOR USA-CUBA DIPLOMACY

UNDERSTANDABLY, there have been widespread expressions across continents over the historic announcement of renewal of diplomatic relations between the United States of America and Cuba after some 53 years of Washington’s hostile, punishing economic blockade.

Guyana and its Caribbean Community partners lost no time in applauding this development which significantly coincided with the Fifth CARICOM-Cuba Summit in Havana last month.

It cannot be forgotten that our relatively small Community, and in particular, a quartet of its first independent states— Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago—had played a unique role in ending Cuba’s diplomatic isolation in 1972.

President Barack Obama, now entering his second and final term, deserves credit for exercising the initiative in reaching out to President Raul Castro to reach the historic accord for re-establishment of diplomatic relations that could well result in the opening of embassies in their respective capitals during this year, and quite possibly, an official

visit to Washington by the Cuban Head of State as guest of President Obama.

Mr. Obama was quite eloquent and candid in admitting that the decision to isolate Cuba with enforcement of a very punishing economic, commercial and financial blockade, had proven a failure against the (Fidel Castro-led) Cuban revolution of 1959.

This long overdue historic development has finally come against the monumental courage and sacrifices displayed by the great mass of the Cuban people.

We join in saluting them in reaffirming Guyana’ solidarity in defence of their political and cultural sovereignty, as well as extending our hope that the U.S. Congress, now controlled by the Republicans, would support President Obama’s desire for super power USA to end the unprecedented economic and financial blockade against that small island state.

2014 quite an eventful year

THE year 2014 has come to an end. It was quite an eventful year, both locally and internationally.

The year ended with a decision by U.S. President Barack Obama to normalise relations with Cuba which effectively brought to an end over five decades of diplomatic isolation by the United States against the Cuban government.

However, there were also many catastrophic events which saw among others, the disappearance of a Malaysian aircraft en route to China in which scores of passengers perished. Another such mishap took place just a mere days ago again involving another Malaysian aircraft on its way to Singapore.

There was also the continuing tension in the Middle East which saw exchange of artillery and missiles between Israel and the Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Dozens of lives were lost not to mention millions of dollars in terms of damage to property and infrastructure.

Then there was the rise of Islamic extremist elements operating in several countries such as Nigeria where dozens of females were kidnapped by Boko Haram elements who are opposed to western education especially among females. The scale of deaths and destruction is most worrying.

The rise of ISIS in Syria, Iraq and other neighbouring countries has also posed a major challenge to the United States and other Governments in the Region.

The conflict in the Central African Republic and South Sudan has also grabbed international headlines if only because of the brutality and savage nature of the killings and massacre that took place.

Tensions between Russia and the western world over Ukraine and the Crimea has not escaped international spotlight.

At the local level, the decision by President Donald Ramotar to prorogue Parliament has certainly taken centre stage following attempts by the combined Opposition to move a No-Confidence Motion against his administration.

The new year of 2015 promises to be yet another challenging if not exciting year due to impending national elections.

Most Guyanese look forward to a return to normalcy to the body politic in 2015 following a gruelling parliamentary impasse which saw the Opposition parties using their one-seat majority to stymie the Government's legislative and developmental agenda.

A happy and productive new year to all Guyanese!

should now engage in a critical reassessment of the prevailing undesirable relations between the USA and Guyana’s border neighbour Venezuela. There has been no known enlightened initiative from Washington for renewal of normal diplomatic relations since the death in office of President Hugo Chavez.

Guyana, of course, has much more than a passing interest in maintaining matured relations with Venezuela. After all, our Spanish-speaking neighbour officially maintains a substantial territorial claim, of colonial origin, to Guyana’s territory, despite recurring assurances.

Presidents Obama and Castro have agreed, after half a century, to re-establish normal diplomatic ties in 2015.

In contrast, Venezuela’s historical claim to some two thirds of Guyana’s 83,000 square miles of territory dates back to the 19th century!

Happiness and all that jazz

HAPPINESS is on the rise globally, according to an end-of-year survey of 64,000 people in 65 countries. Conducted by the market research and polling organisation WIN/ Gallup found, the survey found that 70% of respondents were content with their life - a 10% increase from last year.

Other findings were as follows: Fiji was the happiest nation, with 93% of residents expressing contentment, and Iraq the least happy with 31%. Africa was the happiest Region, with 83% of people saying they were happy or very happy. Western Europe appeared to be the least happy, with 11% of people classifying themselves as either unhappy or very unhappy. And globally, 53% of those asked thought 2015 would be better than 2014.

Of course the survey did not outline indicators of happiness but rather simply focused on happiness per se, regardless of how it was defined. However, the debate on what constitutes happiness has been perennial and one that is bound to whip up strong views each time it rears its head. However, last year, studies from all over the globe collated by the World Happiness Database (WHD)

in Rotterdam, Netherlands, indicated that we can make ourselves happier, but the path to happiness may not be where we are looking for it. The WHD did not provide indicators of happiness either.

Prof Ruut Veenhoven, Director of the Database and Emeritus professor of social conditions for human happiness at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, said his own study found a slight negative correlation between the number of times people in a study spontaneously mentioned "goals" and their happiness. "Though it is generally assumed that you need goals to lead a happy life, evidence is mixed.

The reason seems to be that unhappy people are more aware of their goals, because they seek to change their life for the better."

Although there is some positive correlation between seeing meaning in life and being happy, studies suggest this is not a necessary condition for happiness.

In fact, studies suggest leading an active life has the strongest correlation with happiness.

"In order to lead a happy life, a rewarding life, you need to be active," says Veenhoven. "So involvement is more important to

happiness than knowing the why, why we are here."

The World Happiness Database also indicated that we can make ourselves happier without external changes like having more money. "Research has shown that we can make ourselves happier because happiness does change over time," says Prof Veenhoven, "and these changes are not just a matter of better circumstances but of better dealing with life.

Elderly people tend to be wiser, and for that reason, happier."

In effect while defining happiness is as elusive now as it ever was, in a sense the concept of ‘to each his own’ seems to apply. Yet it does seem clear that two common ingredients in the recipe for happiness are being actively involved in what brings a sense of accomplishments and soul satisfaction and ensuring that you are not labelled, type-casted, predictable, staid and complacent.

These two sets of qualities are enshrined in these two poems from my unpublished collection.

A Happy New Year to All!

By Keith Burrowes IN the past I’ve written what I believe to be fairly serious articles on the dangers of medication, whether prescribed or over the counter. It’s a subject that I believe needs continuous exploration in Guyana and I will continue looking at it from whatever serious angle I can come up with.

For example, suppose you are prescribed one medication. Very often, you might get a small print document with specific drugs to avoid. The problem is, you might already be on some other medication that contains the active ingredient you’ve been warned to avoid.

Suppose you take an antibiotic for a stomach infection. You are warned to avoid a certain drug but you don’t know that it is one of the active ingredients in the medication you’re taking for foot fungus. The next thing you know, your toes start growing long flowing hair.

Or something like that. As far-fetched as that sounds, anyone playing close attention the drug ads on television could recall that

last part at the bit that they read through quickly in as upbeat a voice as possible against a backdrop of happy people and inspirational

to convince you that the drug can help you feel better, the ad then goes on to talk about the side effects for almost a minute. These include

For example, there is this ad I once saw for an anti-depressant medication enhancer called Abilify.

After 20 seconds of trying

mood swings, depression (remember this is an antidepressant), and thoughts of suicide in younger people.

Additionally, you are warned to look out for high fever,

stiff muscles and confusion since they could indicate a ‘life-threatening’ reaction, and old people are especially at risk of dying.

The medication that is perhaps made most fun of however is the ‘miracle’ weight loss brand, alli.

Currently, the side effects page of the company’s website has the relatively mild disclaimer that reads in part: “You've probably heard about alli's diet-related side effects that some users experience. They are bowelrelated changes that can happen, especially during the first few weeks that you use alli.”

However, the original was slightly more graphic, but honest on those changes.

“The fat which remains undigested from your diet can cause changes in your bowel habit, resulting in wind, loose stools and oily spotting from your back passage. Reducing the amount of fat you eat in

your meals will reduce the likelihood of these harmless, but unpleasant side-effects.”

Also, it warned that: “Undigested fat cannot be absorbed and passes through the body naturally. The excess fat is not harmful. In fact, you may recognise it in the toilet as something that looks like the oil on top of a pizza.”

After reading that I don’t think I want to ever eat pizza again. Basically the drug gives you the choice of being overweight and unhappy with yourself, or taking it and risk being the butt, no pun intended, of family, friends and office jokes from now till the end of your life, or send you into further depression which might lead you to take some Abilify.

That said, not all side effects might be unwanted.

Every man knows that as he gets older, not everything works as well as it once did. Sometimes you need to get a little boost and that is where drugs like Viagra

and Cialis come in, well handy. The problem is that even these have their side effects. Viagra for example warns you that you can get headache, nausea, shortness of breath (some men might argue that those are regular side effects of marriage) as well as in a small number of cases, blindness. The one side effect however is the one that I’m sure has actually served to sell more of the drugs than it has prevent the sale of, where the company warns about what to do if experiencing an erection lasting longer than four hours. If you are the sort of person who has taken Viagra for one lasting shorter than four minutes, this might be a side effect you’d learn to live with.

CRACKS IN ANTI-PPP ELECTORAL FRONT Analysis by Rickey Singh

IT seems that with the passing of every month, if not week, Guyana’s main parliamentary opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), is now experiencing recurring problems to conceal its internal differences and, consequently, less likely to attain its stated goal to defeat the incumbent People’s Progressive Party (PPP) at the snap general elections expected early this year.

Comprising the country’s major opposition party, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), the small Alliance For Change (AFC) a n d t h e m i n o r Wo r k i n g People’s Alliance (WPA), the coalition had together secured a one-seat majority over the PPP at the November 2011 general election for the 65-member National Assembly, winning 33 to the incumbent’s 32.

Maintaining firm stubbornness against PRESIDENT any cooperation with the administration of first-term DONALD RAMOTAR President Donald Ramotar, a former long-serving General Secretary of the PPP, right up to prorogation of the Parliament last year, APNU was caught napping by a surprised presidential broadcast announcement last November 10 on prorogation of the Assembly to give, said the Head of State, a chance of success to rounds of dialogue between the Government and Opposition before resumption of a new session of Parliament.

Strange as this process of reasoning by the President may have appeared, it was a further reflection of the divisive nature of party politics in Guyana where, prior to the return of the PPP to governance of the country in 1992, the PNC had consecutively controlled the reins of state power for a quarter of century based on documented electoral fraud.

Slashing annually of national budgets, involving both current and capital expenditures, with their combined one-seat majority became the norm for the Opposition amid ongoing

political conflicts, in and out of Parliament, involving at times, court interventions with the Government managing to continue to achieve successes in securing financial aid and progress in economic development, as documented by regional and international institutions.

However, a few major Government legislative and development projects suffered in the ongoing political confrontations without, fortunately, any significant political disturbances to affect national stability and the rule of law.

However, during the last quarter of 2014 when APNU and AFC opted to be more vigorous in their opposition to the government in anticipation of dissolution of parliament for a

snap election they, ironically, may have succeeded in exposing more of their own internal disunity and weakness than pushing—as expected—the Government on the defensive.

TWO EXAMPLES

Two relevant examples could suffice for now: First, the decision of the combined Opposition to hold what was promised as a “mass rally” against the Government in Georgetown, traditional stronghold of the PNCR—that failed to produce any significant response of much more than one thousand, as reported by the local media.

Of related significance was the absence of some leading political personalities of both APNU and AFC either on the

speakers’ platform or in mingling with the crowd. Worse, subsequently a much publicised declaration by the leadership of APNU and AFC for a “massive” rally in the week of Christmas shockingly failed to occur.

There was more surprisingly bad political news to flow: With the Christmas holidays over and the dawning of 2015, APNU’s chairman and leader of the PNCR, David Granger, a retired Brigadier of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), opted to go public with his deep disappointment over the continuing double-speak by the AFC on formation of a structured coalition in preparation for a united political front against the PPP at the coming snap general election that could be held by mid-year, if not earlier. It is not due before November 2016.

As reported in yesterday’s ‘Guyana Times’ Granger accused the AFC (whose leader is Khemraj Ramjattan, lawyer by profession and a defector from the PPP) of “pussyfooting on coalition talks.”

He told a media conference on Friday at the Opposition Leader’s office that he was still awaiting from the AFC some precise information pertaining to what that party really wants to be discussed as an agenda for a suggested “pro-democracy alliance.”

The reality is that while the PNCR, AFC and what expediently functions currently under the umbrella of APNU may be firmly united in their opposition to the governing PPP, they would have much difficulties in arriving at a consensus on the formation of their anti-PPP alliance in time for the coming 2015 general elections.

Time will tell. At present there are NO calls from any established organisation or civil society body for such a political alliance.

He added too that the presence of a general manager for the hotel already resident in Guyana is not only to ensure that the Marriott operates the hotel properly.

Grissi said that he is integrally involved in the construction aspect of the hotel on a daily basis and “if something [is] not up to a requirement, we correct it right away.”

According to the general manager, “Our brand is very important, we take it seriously …the presence of Marriott in Guyana [is]very important to us.”

When completed, the Guyana Marriott “will be the only branded hotel and it needs to represent the quality on which our company has been built.”

He was adamant that Marriott International will not compromise on its demands “and we are never going to accept a building that does not have those qualities.”

Meanwhile, Chairman of AHI, Winston Brassington, reinforced the position by Grissi and added that in addition to the general manager’s presence in Guyana, Marriott International in fact has a management team on the ground.

According to Brassington, Marriott International will not be signing off on the project if it is not satisfied; hence the critical reason they have been involved from the beginning.

The AHI Chairman also spoke to the fact that one of the key early steps in building a Marriott is the construction of a model room “and that has to be inspected and approved by Marriott before they can build the rest.”

The hotel’s general manager, who assumed his post locally in June last year, began his Marriott career in 1985 as banquet manager at the Washington Dulles Renaissance Hotel.

He was Director of Food & Beverage at various Marriott properties spanning 14 years and in 1999, he was promoted to director of operations and then hotel manager at the Casa Magna Marriott in Cancun.

Grissi was appointed General Manager in 2002 of the Renaissance Jaragua Hotel & Casino in Santo Domingo. Subsequent general manager roles include the JW Marriott Caracas Hotel, and Venezuela Country Manager overseeing the operations of the JW Marriott Caracas, the Marriott Venezuela Playa Grande Hotel, and the Renaissance Caracas La Castellana.

He was recently general manager of The RitzCarlton, Aruba, where he successfully opened the hotel in 2013.

Toward an Indian Diaspora-Caribbean agenda

First published: themisirpost.wordpress.com Introduction The PravasiBharatiya Divas (PBD) symbolizes a perpetual cultural continuity and bonding of overseas Indians to their Indian cultural heritage; many overseas Indians, that is, Indians from the Indian Diaspora at the PBD are largely professionals whose migration to the Western metropolis has no parallel with that of the early indentureds of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Early indentureds inhabited a dehumanized total institutional environment, with no

mobility, enslaved by the tyranny of the rule of law, and reduced to a history of humiliation.

J.C. Sharma demonstrated the striking difference of the early Caribbean indentureds, thus (Sharma, 2002): “These settlers to the Caribbean had usually carried with them on their way only their pots and pans, a few pieces of clothing, and perhaps a blanket. Yet, they managed to bequeath to their children and their grand-children the cultural heritage of their land of origin.” And it is the early indentureds’ cultural legacy that today has concretized the pillars of the PBD, the annual forum that forges the mutual link between overseas Indians and India. How did the PBD become a reality?

The Government of India under the then Prime Minister AtalBihari Vajpayee in 2000 appointed the High Level Committee on the Indian Diaspora; its terms of reference (MEA, 2000, p.iii) were to: assess the status of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in relation to the constitutional provisions, laws and rules related to India and the countries where they reside; develop a holistic understanding of PIOs and NRIs and what they expect from India; review possible roles of PIOs and NRIs to develop India; study the immigration rules applicable to PIOs’ visits to India and their investments, and the concerns of NRIs; and recommend a policy framework to forge a mutually beneficial relationship between PIOs, NRIs and India.

This Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. L.M. Singhvi, a Member of Parliament and a former High Commissioner of India to the UK made several recommendations, among which included the hosting

of the annual PBD and conferral of the PravasiSamman Awards to both PIOs and NRIs (MEA, 2001b, p.377).

Each year since 2003, January 9 is the day set aside to celebrate PBD, as it was on this day that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa. I have a keen interest in promoting the mission, vision, and philosophy of the PBD, as evidenced through my paper presentations at several PBDs: “Leveraging knowledge networks” at the 8th PBD in New Delhi (2010); “Defining Indian Diaspora” at the 7th PBD in Chennai (2009); “Defining the Diaspora agenda: the Caribbean” at the 4th PBD in Hyderabad (2006); and

Indians is one which is very dear to our hearts. Everyone of Indian origin overseas is a representative of India and retains many aspects of our cultural traditions and civilization.

Though our sons and daughters have gone abroad to work or to reside there, India will never disown them or fail to appreciate and respect their essential loyalty to the culture and heritage of the mother country."

Indeed, there is a growing need to have a working relationship of overseas Indians with India, amid a fiercely brutal economic globalization process, working to the disadvantage of poor developing economies. A sustained relationship requires an application of the principle of reciprocity, making both parties stakeholders. Both parties would need to have a mutual understanding of what is happening in India, on the one hand, and what is happening in overseas territories, on the other hand. Vajpayee’s commitment to overseas Indians is encouraging, as each overseas Indian takes a piece of India in the new abode.

in ‘Plenary session IV: India & Generation Next’, “Toward national unity in multicultural societies” at the 3rd PBD in Mumbai (2005), and the Journal of Indo Caribbean Research has now published this paper.

The PBD addresses two types of people: Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs); PIOs are foreign citizens of Indian origin or descent and NRIs are Indian citizens living overseas for an indefinite period. The Indian Diaspora includes both PIOs and NRIs, comprising about 25 million Indians scattered over 110 countries.

This Diaspora represents about 1.7% of India’s population, and according to Parekh, only about 3.5 million of the 25 million Indian Diasporans are settled or rich (Parekh, 2003).

But Parekh argues that the Indian Diaspora is not new (Parekh, 2003); Indians have been abroad, back and forth numerous times for hundreds of years; Indians have been settling overseas over the last 2,300 years, when commencing in the post-Buddha period, Indian missionaries traveled to Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

Wakenaam residents enjoying 24-hour electricity for first time – following similar service in Leguan RESIDENTS of Wakenaam, one of the largest islands located in the Essequibo River are now benefiting from a 24-hour electricity service, as the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) officially commissioned the upgraded Wakenaam Power Plant.

Recently, neighbouring island, Leguan had its power plant commissioned. The plant has three new 513 KVA units and auxiliary supplies.

Wakenaam, which has a population of approximately 10,000 people, is mostly agriculture driven, and according to President Donald Ramotar who unveiled the plaque to commission the plant, this new service will pave the way for greater economic growth in the Region Three Island.

The President was accompanied by Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds, GPL’s Chairman, Winston Brassington, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bharrat Dindyal and Region 3 (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara)Chairman, Julius Faerber.

President Ramotar highlighted the importance of electricity and its role in national development. Wakenaam, he said, possesses great potential as it is known for its production of rice, coconut oil and cattle.

“The Island has been blessed with talented farmers and hard working people…and what is needed to help with the development of the island is infrastructure because I am convinced that we have the human capital to move the island forward. And one of the most important elements of this is electricity which will make life easier for the people,” the President emphasised.

A reliable electricity service will also create greater opportunities, especially for women, in order to increase income -generating options and ease the burden of house

chores to which many have been subjected, he said.

“This service is important; not only you will have the opportunity to watch television, but because it will have the possibility of creating jobs…to diversify your own livelihood, moving from just rice to other crops. It will also develop the social industry where people can have more places to relax, engage in cultural activities and so forth.”

Since 1992, Government has been placing tremendous emphasis on education, and the President noted that this is another step of ensuring that students have the opportunity to utilise the services offered, since they will now be able to use the computer labs.

“We are convinced that the most important factor for development is people, and developing the quality of people is what will take us forward, and we have seen numerous examples of that all over the world…many countries of great natural resources still have poverty, but those that have a high level of education have been recording positive development and growth rate,” he stressed.

Social expenditure has moved from less than 8% of the National Budget in 1992, to more than 30% today, with the aim of increasing services in vital areas, especially education and health.

He reminded that in 1992 when the PPP/C assumed office, only 30% of the students attending primary school could have attended secondary school, because there were no schools at which to place them. Today, the situation has improved drastically, with all being given the opportunity to access education, even higher education online through the University of Guyana’s online degree programme.

Meanwhile, in the area of health, the President said there have been noticeable developments and reminded that Government is now moving to establish a Specialty Hospital, even as he mentioned developments in the housing and agriculture sectors, which are all geared to better the quality of life of Guyanese.

Over the last two years, (up to mid-2014), the size of Guyana’s economy grew by 25% (US $650B) President Ramotar highlighted. He said that in the same period of time, when some of the most important exports were affected such as gold, rice and sugar, the economy recorded its ninth successive year of economic growth.

President Ramotar further noted that the realisation of the Amaila Falls Hydro project will see the country developing further.

He charged the residents to desist from electricity theft and utilise the service that is being offered to them.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister and Minister responsible for the energy sector, Samuel Hinds noted that GPL, having provided a 24-hour service to Wakenaam and Leguan, is now looking to link the islands, allowing for a more improved service in the future. (GINA)

Over 6,000 take advantage of seventh registration cycle SOME 6,003 persons have taken advantage of the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) seventh cycle of registration, which ended on Wednesday (December 31, 2014), according to the a reliable source with the Commission.

The seventh cycle of continuous registration commenced on November 30th, 2014, and allowed persons the opportunity to register for the first time, conduct transfers and make changes to their registration details.

The source disclosed too that the Commission is in the process of verifying the residency of the new applicants

for registration.

The official added that there were also 1,163 changes and corrections to existing registration information that was done during the seventh continuous cycle of registration.

“There were also 1,248 transfers,” the source said, explaining that this is due to due to issues related to change of address, etc.

The official noted that the Commission’s employees at various locations worked late into the night to facilitate persons who were awaiting service.

Additionally, now that the seventh cycle of continuous registration has ended, a Claims and Objections period is expected to commence soon.

At the end of the sixth cycle of continuous registration, in the latter part of June, there were registrations of some 14,981 new persons, 14,942 of whom have already been verified. There were also 2,004 transfers, owing to issues related to changes of address, and 2,747 changes/corrections to existing registration information. The remains of Alfred Branche, 62, was found by a search party, fiveand-a-half days after he had slipped out unnoticed from his home at McKenzie Street Rosignol, apparently in a state of mental anguish following the death of his daughter by accident in the car he was driving on December 23 last.

Branche was reportedly driving a wagon when it collided with a parked vehicle on the Number 29 Village Public Road, West Coast Berbice resulting in the death of his daughter, Yonette, 16.

Father and son remanded for Tuschen triple-murder BOTH Jerome and Timmy Franklin were remanded to prison until March 11, 2015 when they appeared before Vreeden-Hoop Magistrate, Rochelle Liverpool to answer to the capital offence of murder. The charges state that together they hacked Bibi Zalima Khan, Floyd Drakes and nine-year-old Ashley Boodhoo to death on December 18, 2014 at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. That attack also left Geeta Boodhoo, reputed wife of Jerome Franklin, minus her left hand and sustaining several other chop wounds about the body after the senior Franklin, Jerome, forced his way into the home that he once shared with the injured woman even though he had been restrained by the court from visiting the home.

Seven left homeless in Alberttown fire THE quiet afternoon atmosphere of Sixth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown was suddenly transformed into chaos in the onslaught of a fire that completely gutted a house at Lot 76, Sixth Street Alberttown, leaving homeless 91-year-old Enid Duesbury and one of her sons, 54-yearold Edwin Oudkerk, his spouse and her four children, who are all between the ages of three and 10 years. Oudkerk said he was at the dentist at about minutes to four when he received a call informing that his house was on fire.

Mother of four found floating in canal THE body of thirty-four-year-old Natasha Jacobs of Lamaha Park, Georgetown was found floating in the South Sophia canal that is known as the “Blacka”. Residents and relatives suspect that the mother of four had been murdered by her lover, with whom she had shared an abusive relationship.

Relatives at the scene of the discovery were vociferous about Natasha’s easygoing attitude.

Body of missing teen found floating in creek THE search for Apex Academy student, 14-year-old Dhaniram Ramgopaul ended when caretakers of a creek along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway found his apparently fresh body floating in the same creek where he was swimming with family members before he exited the water to use the bathroom. This publication was informed that the 14-year-old was lured into a minibus with two friends he knew from the East Coast of Demerara who are in the business of selling music discs on push carts. She said that a 15-year-old boy who is among the persons in custody for the disappearance of her son, reportedly told investigators that they took the boy to a house where he was drugged and they all slept on a bed together. Asked if the young man had reported that any sexual activity went on among them, the woman responded in the negative stating that nothing of the sort was reported to her.

Woman dies five days after giving birth at the GPHC THE Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in a recent report has revealed that a patient who delivered a baby on Christmas Day passed away on Tuesday last. After being discharged from the GPHC on Boxing Day, the patient whose identity is undisclosed at the moment, became ill and was taken to the Diamond Hospital from where she was referred to the GPHC’s Emergency Room.

The report added that the patient succumbed hours after admission to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the GPHC. Clear demonstration of confidence in Amaila Hydro Power Project from partners THE Amaila Falls Hydro Power Project (AFHP) is moving forward and development partners’ continued support is a clear demonstration of confidence in the project’s merits, according to President Donald Ramotar.

“Within months, we (the current administration) expect to achieve financial closure and commence construction, and this project will come into operation during our new term in office,” he disclosed in his New Year’s address to the nation.

The announcement follows last October’s promised transfer of an accumulated US$80M in payments from Norway, US$45M released in 2013 and US$35M released last October, to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which would be used as Guyana’s equity contribution to the Government’s AFHP. These monies, the Head of State announced on Wednesday night, have been transferred and represent a significant accomplishment for Guyana and by extension the Guyanese people.

“The project is once again moving forward… it demonstrates that all partners have strong confidence in Amaila,” he said.

The transfer of the monies to the IDB follows a clear indication of support for the project from the Bank last August, where the organisation made it clear that it was “still on board” for the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project.

Machine-readable Guyana Passports upgraded FOLLOWING the 2014 inking of a contract with the Canadian Bank Note Company Limited, Government has been able to upgrade the security features of the Guyana Machinereadable Passports in an effort to safeguard the integrity of the document. Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee said: “This upgrade was facilitated during 2014 by the Canadian Bank Note Company with the decommissioning of the old system and installation of new hardware and software components.

This process is almost complete, and the new, re-designed passports will come into being in 2015, while the old passports will be gradually phased out.”

Police adopt no nonsense campaign against tinted vehicles MEMBERS of the joint services will not be spared in the renewed approach to the zero tolerance campaign by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) against those vehicles bearing tinted windows particularly in “A” Division. This was assured by the Traffic Officer Ramesh Ashram and Commander Clifton Hicken of “A” Division. The police are of the view that tint on vehicles does impair the vision of drivers especially when they encounter junctions and cross streets at nights and fail to roll their windows down to afford clearer vision of oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

Research shows that a significant proportion of waste generated in Region 4 and in Guyana, on the whole, is comprised of nonreusable, single-use products, including plastic bags, plastic bottles, and Styrofoam containers.

CIOG’s president Youman Nabi message

PRESIDENT of the Central Islamic Organisation (CIOG), Fazeel M. Ferouz in a message relayed greetings on the occasion of Eid Milad un Nabi/Youman Nabi which is celebrated today across the globe. His the message, Ferouz noted that today as we face a rapidly changing world dominated by man’s inhumanity to man, “Where might is right and the poor are taken advantage of by the rich, where women and children are abused and we witness daily the senseless acts of war, where innocent people are killed in large numbers in the name of fighting terrorism, we must ask ourselves, are we better off today or more advanced than our ancestors?

The answer is simply, No”.

Ferouz stated that some Fourteen hundred and thirty years ago God Almighty, ALLAH SWT sent the Prophet Muhammad (owbp) and in a period of twenty-three years, he was able to change the conditions of his society which were similar in almost every respect to the one we are living in presently. He did this with the message of the Quran and his beautiful conduct of living.

“Each year, Muslims all over the world celebrate with joy, the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (owbp) and this celebration of the Prophet’s birthday is known to Muslims as Eid Milad un Nabi or Youman Nabi” said Ferouz.

In Guyana and many countries in Africa, the Middle East and the far east the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal is a national holiday.

The Prophet's life and his conduct has become a model on which every Muslim aspires to build his life according to the situation in which he finds himself, as ALLAH SWT says in the Holy Qur’an: "Verily, in the apostle of God you have a good example for everyone who looks forward (with hope and awe) to God and the Last Day and remembers God unceasingly."(Sura Al-Azhab 33:21) In spite of his appointment as the Prophet (Nabi) of ALLAH SA, Muhammad (owbp) never claimed to possess any superhuman qualities. He maintained that he was a mortal and a servant ('abd) of ALLAH SA to whom revelation (wahi) came, as it is indicated in the Holy Qur’an.

He knew that his role was to be the messenger (Rasul) and mediator of ALLAH SWT in guiding mankind. It is important to note that even in this function of acting as a guide; he reminded the people that the only true guidance came from ALLAH, SA "Verily, thou cannot guide aright everyone whom thou lovest: but it is Allah who guides him that wills (to be guided); and He is fully aware of all who would let themselves be guided."

(Sura Al-Qasas 28: Verse 56) It can be understood from this that ALLAH's guidance is an act of His grace with which HE rewards all who desire to be guided. The Prophet (o.w.b.p.) preached exactly that, whatever happened to him was nothing but ALLAH's unbounded grace and, through this act of mercy and kindness, he was appointed to be a guide amongst the people.

He never boasted of his exalted position as it is indicated in the Holy Qur’an. As ALLAH SA “taught Adam the names of all things", ALLAH, taught Muhammad (owbp) the Qur’ an.

The designation of the Prophet as being 'Mercy for the mankind' (Rahmat lil-alamin) is another example of his lofty post. He saw his role amongst his people as their guide and teacher and by his example was to steer them to salvation.

Whoever followed him, and his way of life, understood their purpose and meaning of their existence in the world.

Unfortunately the life of the Prophet (owbp) has been misunderstood by non Muslims. His function was not only to be a spiritual guide but also the organiser of the new social order, which came as a result of the last revelation (the Holy Quran) In closure Ferouz said: “I therefore on the occasion of the birth anniversary the Holy Prophet Muhammad call on all Guyanese to reflect on the message of the Holy Quran and the numerous examples left by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (owbp). By doing this we would be able to change our lives and be successful in this life and in the life to come”. *******************************************

Remember the moral pathways of the Holy Prophet -IAC THE Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) extends greetings to all Guyanese especially those who are adherents of Islam, on the occasion of Youman Nabi, a national holiday,

which commemorates the birth of (and the death) the Holy Prophet Muhammad (On Whom Be Peace).

The IAC recognises that followers of Islam were present in this country since the days of slavery, as many of the enslaved Africans were Muslims.

The IAC also recognises that new influx of Muslims to this country occurred during the period of indentureship, as approximately one out of every five East Indian immigrants was a follower of the teachings of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Whom Peace Be Upon).

The IAC calls upon all Guyanese to remember the moral pathways outlined by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Whom Peace Be Upon) in which he called upon all mankind to the way of peace and to the belief in supreme being, and thus reminded them of the importance of principles such as faith, repentance, honesty, simplicity, equality and concerned for the dispossessed and the poor.

The IAC, in this significant commemoration of one who arguably is the greatest human who ever lived and who preached the value of love, sacrifice and compassion, to be positively influenced, so that our everyday interactions with each other, irrespective of Ethnic religious and class origins.

Holy Prophet left a legacy of a religion universal in scope-PNCR

The Party takes particular note of the fact that the Holy Prophet Muhammed has left a legacy of a religion that is universal in scope and purpose, which promotes an end to human suffering, disease and poverty. More particularly this legacy is consistent with the promotion of peace and harmony in our country and the rest of the world.

This legacy is important not only for the spiritual development of this nation but also for its commitment to ending disease, poverty and backwardness and the promotion of harmony in Guyana . Guyanese can benefit from this legacy by using it as an instrument not only for the promotion of understanding among our various ethnic groups but also and more importantly for bringing a healing touch to the dilemmas and challenges which afflict the nation at the present time. The PNCR is referring in particular to the spiraling drug culture, the scourge of violence and the spate of brutal murders, a situation which has scarred the social landscape and has earned us a certain degree of regional and international disrepute.

The PNCR, therefore, wishes to suggest to the nation that as we reflect on the significance of the birth of the Holy Prophet we take to heart the message and lessons of the doctrines of this great religion and use them as important instruments for improving our society in such a way that we can begin to see the end of the vicious cycle of violence and witness the creations of conditions for racial harmony, peace and the real development in Guyana.

Dynamic Airways explains difficulties encountered

DYNAMIC Airways recently transported in excess of 2000 passengers to Guyana, and the airline is in the process of returning those passengers safely to their destination in the United States of America (USA).

This feat was accomplished amidst all the challenges the airline had experienced, especially during the busy Christmas season.

Dynamic Airways has unfortunately been recently plagued with many delays, for which the airline has faced severe criticism. Passengers travelling back to Guyana for the Christmas Holidays were allegedly left stranded at the John F Kennedy (JFK) Airport in New York.

Captain Gerald ‘Gerry’ Gouveia has said via his Facebook post that the fault was maintenance-related.

“Due to an unanticipated maintenance delay,” he said, “the additional flight that was added by Dynamic to handle holiday passengers is delayed by 24 hours. To alleviate the inconvenience, passengers are being accommodated with hotels, meals, and transportation,” he mentioned in the social network post.

As was also reported, about 250 passengers were booked to travel with Dynamic Airways on the Christmas Eve flight to Guyana, but did not make it home for Christmas after they were left stranded at the John F Kennedy (JFK) Airport.

Managing Director of Roraima Group of Companies, Captain Gerald Gouveia, related that Dynamic Airways created an environment of stable fares and the ability to make a choice for the travelling public here in Guyana.

He emphasised that “they (Dynamic Air-

On November 22, 2014, Dynamic Airways resumed operations in Guyana after being out for several months owing to a number of issues, including problematic ground handling personnel. Gouveia explained in a press conference, after gaining permission from Department of Transportation (DOT) in the Unites States, “The company has filed all documents (with) the GCAA, with the last piece of document (being) filed yesterday (Monday, November 10).

“We are now awaiting their approval which has to be sent to the Minister of Works for the final okay,” Gouveia said.

Dynamic Airways entered the Guyanese market in June, and then had suspended all flights on July 8, approximately two weeks after it commenced operations. The airline explained that the suspension was due to operational difficulties encountered while trying to secure time slots at the John F Kennedy (JFK) Airport for the month of July. Then the company was forced to cease all flights, and had given a date of return as August 8, but the airline had failed to honour its return date and to return direct flights between CJIA and JFK. CaFA LAUNCHES FILM PROJECT IN SUPPORT OF CARIBBEAN SCRIPTWRITERS THE Caribbean Film Academy (CaFA) and its partners - Groundation Grenada; the Audiovisual Society of Dominica; ChantiMedia and SASOD Guyana – is set to launch the Caribbean Film Project, an initiative which aims to showcase the talent of unknown and emerging writers in the Caribbean and in the Diaspora.

Through the Caribbean Film Project, CaFA and its partners will not only tackle storytelling in films coming out of the Caribbean, but will provide an opportunity for filmmakers in the Diaspora to have their work included in a Caribbean film compilation.

The initiative will focus on assisting in the production of films in countries which have mostly been absent from the current Caribbean filmmaking renaissance – Dominica, Guyana, Grenada, and St. Kitts & Nevis, as well as Caribbean filmmakers in the Diaspora.

Caribbean Film Project will be run as a script competition, open to entries from January – February 2015. The winner from each country will be paired with a coach who will work with the writer to make their scripts production-ready.

With the help of each producing partner, the films will then be produced. CaFA plans to raise the funds needed for the project through sponsorship, fundraisers and crowd-funding.

This focus on writing is long overdue, according to CaFA’s Co-Founder, Romola Lucas, who has led the effort to organise this new project. She said: “Spurred by the availability and increasing affordability of filmmaking equipment, the Caribbean is currently experiencing a surge in filmmaking. More and more people, who may never have considered filmmaking an option are making films encouraged by new opportunities to have

their work screened at the growing number of Caribbean film festivals. Many of the films are excellent, well written, professionally produced, and visually appealing. However, there are many others which suffer from technical issues and incomplete storytelling.”

“From our perspective, well-written stories underpin every sustainable film movement, and in order for Caribbean storytellers to be counted among the best in the world, specific focus and attention must be given to the development of great writers,” Lucas continues.

The Film Project competition is open to writers/filmmakers who are residents/ nationals of Dominica, Guyana, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, and to those of Caribbean descent/heritage living in the Diaspora and writing Caribbean stories. Submissions open on Friday, January 2, 2015 and close Friday, February, 28, 2015. Murder of Canje 14-year-old…

Autopsy reveals death due to strangulation

By Jeune Bailey Van Keric AS the investigation into the murder of East Canje Secondary School student, Tiana Raghbeer continues, an autopsy report revealed that death was due to strangulation.

Performing the post-mortem on the 14 year old on New Year’s Day at the New Amsterdam Hospital mortuary was Government Pathologist, Dr. Vivikenand Brijmohan, who added that the teenager was alive when she was thrown into the trench .

Dr. Brijmohan based his findings on the presence of mud and water in the respiratory tract and stomach of the teenager, who was found submerged in a muddy trench at Reliance

Tiana Raghbeer Village, East Canje on Saturday, December 27.

Meanwhile, the teen’s father and her stepmother remain in police custody, as sleuths attempts to crack the case.

Information revealed that the Canje Secondary student had been exposed to narcotics and alcohol, amongst other social ills.

Investigation has revealed that the statements of the father, Jaiprakash Raghbeer, with respect to the events leading up to the discovery of Tiana in the trench, is filled with inconsistencies and contradicts that which was given by his common-law wife of two months.

Consequently, a 10- year- old sibling of the deceased has revealed that the teenager and her father had a heated argument, resulting in her leaving the home and their father pursuing her in their grandfather’s car.

In his statement to the media, Jaiprakash Raghbeer alias “Jaio,” had stated that the family had spent Boxing Day at a gymkhana held in East Canje.

After returning home, the family became aware of the fact that Tiana had left the house when she failed to return to the living room with drinks for her father and stepmother.

According to Raghbeer, “It was minutes to 11 that she brought food for me and she stepmother and she said she going downstairs for the drinks. After I finished eating, I called out

to her and got no response, so I sent her 10-year-old brother to call her. He then say she gone.

“Me and my wife jump on the motorbike and start looking for she in all the places we think she could be. We went as far as Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice, but we did not find her….

On my way back I hear they find a body in the backdam trench. When we reach they didn’t take her out yet. When they

take her out I recognise her clothes and I tell the police that look like me daughter.”

Meanwhile, even as the body of Tiana Raghbeer remains to be buried, there is some confusion as to what form the burial should take. The teen’s mother wants her to be buried, but her father has made preparations for her to be cremated.

THE Nigerian Student Association of Guyana (NSAG) hosted an evening of celebration at the poolside of the Sleep-In International Hotel on Brickdam last Saturday and it was truly an evening of fun and elegance.

There are currently more than 100 Nigerian students pursuing medical studies at the following universities in Guyana: the University of Guyana (UG); the Texila American University (TAU); Georgetown American University, and the American International University.

Organised by the current executive of NSAG under the presidency of Mr. Innocent Jarrel, the programme was chaired by past NSAG president Mr. Samuel Obiegbusi, who served until October 1, 2014.

The highlight of the evening’s proceedings was a splendid display of exquisite African attire by the doctors in training, who sported designs by student, Ijeoma Opara.

During the cultural presentation, the students showcased traditional wear from different tribes in Nigeria.

Obiegbusi outlined that there are some 250 ethnic tribes in Nigeria, but there are three major tribes, namely Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba. Coming under those are the subgroups, numbering more than 250.

“We tried to showcase the dressing code by ethnic groups by the modelling that was done by some of the students,” Obiegbusi said, displaying an air of pride and satisfaction.

Apart from the modelling of African wear by students, there were also masquerade performances.

Obiegbusi noted that masquerade bands cut across each ethnic group in Nigeria, with every ethnic group having its own masquerade.

There was also a dinner and awards ceremony to honour students displaying academic excellence during academic year 2013/2014. Among those honoured were the following persons: Doctor of Medicine (MD) 5, Okene Innocent K, a student of Texila American University (TAU). Okene has maintained an unbroken record for a consistently high standard of academic performance from the time he entered the university. He was honoured for academic excellence in both 2013 and 2014.

Others honoured were Doctor of Medicine (MD) 6: Asiegbu Chinedu J; MD 4: Ezeweputa Nonze Stephanie; MD 3: Doyin; MD 2A: Ihunwo Peculiar; MD 2B: Gbadeyun Tola; MD1: Joseph Ocheje and Lucky Gospel (both with the average score); Pre-Med (PM) 2: Becky Nwaimo; PM 3: Bolaji Oreoluwa Adewole.

Meanwhile, among the pioneers successfully completing their programmes in the MBBS and MD in 2013 were Dr. Obi and Dr. Chris, who were accorded a round of applause and acknowledged in absentia. They are now doing their internships at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and in Nigeria respectively.

Awards were also presented to key functionaries who have served the association well. Among them were: Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Jacob Opadeyi, who is also patron of the NSAG; Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Elizabeth Harper; Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Pedro; and Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Education, Ms. Vera Francis.

Reviews under way to improve national trade facilitation needs assessment -with hope of attracting new investors -Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett

By Navendra Seoraj THE Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are currently reviewing the National Trade Facilitation Needs Assessment, seeking ways in which they can improve on that.

This was according to Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues- Birkett at the ministry’s end-of-year press conference recently.

Minister Birkett disclosed that the World Trade Organization (WTO) had initiated the national trade facilitation needs assessment in September 2013 with the

ministry.

She added that this initiative was set up by the WTO to perceive how Guyana’s Customs Administration operates: “Because our country is only [one] of many that at this point and time is in competition with others for investors,” said Birkett.

According to Minister Birkett, “How we do business will either add to the list of investors coming to Guyana or subtract from the number of investors coming to the country.”

Additionally, this is why the Government of Guyana requires this assessment so that more investors can contribute to the development of Guyana’s economy.

THIRD TRADE POLICY REVIEW Meanwhile, at the same encounter with members of the media, Minister Birkett disclosed that preparations are under way for the third trade policy review.

She noted that the review which is carried out by the WTO is expected to conclude in September 2015.

Minister Birkett noted that Guyana is reviewed every six years; the two previous trade policy reviews were done in 2003 and 2009.

At a meeting earlier in 2014, Minister Birkett had disclosed

Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues- Birkett that the trade policy review is not used for enforcing Guyana’s or any other country’s obligations under Agreements, but to ensure a smoother functioning of the international trade system, whether between one country and another, or among a group of countries.

Similarly, the review is neither intended to settle agreement disputes nor to impose new policy commitments on countries being reviewed.

She also divulged that the review is normally attended by other member countries, and questions are given before the session or are asked during the meetings. Guyana will have an opportunity to respond to those questions either immediately or within 30 days of the meeting.

The policy statement later produced by Guyana, which clearly defines the country’s future intentions in foreign trade, will be built up by the questions made and asked by other members attending the review meetings.

BENEFITS OF THE TRADE POLICY Fully accepting the nature of the review, Minister Birkett stated that the Foreign Affairs Ministry maintains two goals: firstly, to build an effective trade policy that will advance Guyana’s interests with other countries and, secondly, to identify opportunities for developing new markets for exportable goods and services.

THE WTO The World Trade Organization acts as a forum for governments to negotiate trade agreements and settle trade disputes. The organisation, which was established in 1995, is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has a membership of 160 countries, which includes Guyana.

Guyanese filmmaker continues to make waves … Award-winning Seawall screened in Cuba

TORONTO, Canada – Award-winning Guyanese filmmaker Mason Richards, who once described his short film The Seawall as his heart, continues to make his country and self proud.

In what is believed to be a first for a Guyanese filmmaker, Richards broke new ground when The Seawall was screened at the 36th Havana Film Festival (HFF) from December 4-14 last.

Officially known as the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, the Havana Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the Region, and the largest in Cuba and last year saw a largely Cuban and international audience attending.

The HFF coincidentally ended just a few days after the United States and Cuba agreed to restore diplomatic ties severed more than 50 years ago, with US president Barack Obama calling for an end to the long economic embargo against its old Cold War enemy.

In an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, Richards disclosed that filmmakers and international celebrities from across Latin and South America were all in attendance at the festival, including famed actor Benicio

Del Toro who received the honorary “Coral Award.”

Mason’s film The Seawall or “el Malecon” (translated into Spanish language for the prestigious HFF, initially had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 and has since screened internationally throughout the Caribbean, London, Canada, and the United States to packed audiences.

The Seawall was presented in Cuba as part of a special showcase hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival (TTFF).The showcase comprised of four feature-length and five short documentary and narrative films, all of which were selections at the TTFF/14.

The films represented a cross-section of the non-Spanish speaking Caribbean, and a number of them were TTFF/14 prizewinners.

For the third year in a row, the TTFF presented “Caribbean Calling,” a showcase of Caribbean films, at the HFF. “Once again, the TTFF is pleased to share films from our festival with our Cuban brothers and sisters,” said TTFF Programme Director Annabelle Alcazar. “Also, the directors of the films involved also get a chance to make fruitful connections with members of the international film industry who are at Ha-

vana, long considered a prestigious festival.”

The Seawall is a narrative short film shot entirely on location in Georgetown, Guyana, and centers around Marjorie, a Guyanese woman, as she prepares for her 10-year old grandson’s move to America to be with his mother. Struggling with loneliness, abandonment, audiences watch as Marjorie sacrifices her happiness for her grandson’s future.

The cast and crew consisted of local Guyanese non-actors, non-professionals and students working alongside Mason and his crew from Los Angeles. The film offers a rare glimpse into the day-to-day lives of a Guyanese family and stunningly captures how emigration affects those left behind.

Although heartbreaking, The Seawall is a fundamental story about hope and optimism.

In addition to being Mason’s graduate thesis project at the renowned Film Directing programme at CalArts, the film allowed Richards to return to his home country, Guyana, to share what he has learned about filmmaking and tell a story “in the community - with the community… Guyana is a beautiful country with good people. I wanted to make a tonal film that captures the essence of a few people’s experience in the country I love so much.”

“In my film, the seawall is a symbol of separation between Guyana and the United States. It’s also a symbolic separation of families who leave their home countries to pursue a so-called ‘better life’ abroad and in America. It’s been amazing to be in Havana to screen the film because the Cubans can relate to the themes in the story. I’m thrilled that the Spanish- and English-speaking Caribbean communities can come together and relate through cinema. My Cuban brothers and sisters have been great hosts, and the country is classically beautiful.” says writer/ director Richards.

In Guyana, the seawall is a 280-mile brick wall that runs along much of Guyana’s coastline, and all along the capital city of Georgetown. The wall protects settlements in coastal areas of Guyana, most of which are below sea level at high tide.

Similarly, in Havana, the seawall called “el malecón” was built in the early 1900’s to protect Havana from the water and the so-called Nortes, but in reality, it wound up serving more for nighttime promenades

by Habaneros, for lovers and most of all for individual fishermen. Also, similarly in Guyana, the seawall is a large social gathering spot for locals.

APNU denies receiving funding – APNU leader David Granger from Glenn Lall BRIGADIER David Granger, Leader of the Opposition, has dismissed allegations made by the Guyana Times that A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has received millions in funding from publisher of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall, and has assured that APNU has never received funding from Lall.

Granger responded to the Guyana Times’ allegations Friday at an APNU weekly press conference held at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition on Hadfield Street.

The Guyana Times article, published on January 1, 2015, said: “Kaieteur News tabloid has been pumping into the political Opposition parties, Alliance For Change (AFC) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). This support has been estimated by objective observers as totalling in the tens of millions annually.”

The daily newspaper declared thus: “The Guyana Times was told by several businessmen that they were forced

by Lall to join the Funding a United Committee for Opposition Presidency (FUCOP). This is reminiscent of the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP) – formed in 1990 by business-

men like C. N. Sharma. They pumped in millions for the re-election of then President Desmond Hoyte. The businessmen said Lall ‘made them an offer they couldn’t refuse’, since he had made up stories and “snitched” on them previously to the U.S. Consulate, as revealed

by WikiLeaks.”

The Opposition Leader denounced the content of the article, stressing that, “A Partnership for National Unity has never received any money or any funding from Mr. Lall or Kaieteur News.”

Moreso, Granger made it known that he is not even aware of what FUCOP is, neither has there been any meeting with his party and the said Committee.

“I don’t know what FUCOP is about; we have never had any meeting with FUCOP,” he said.

Without mentioning its source, the Guyana Times further alleged that, “Lall’s ownership of a newspaper allows cash to be collected every day, and this gives him the opportunity to

cover the money trail from his other “sketchy” sources of income, as described by the U.S. Political Officer, to be funnelled to political Opposition through FUCOP.” (Ravin Singh)

Coroner’s inquest fails to determine cause of taxi driver’s death

By Jeune Bailey Van Keric A Coroner’s Inquiry has, after fourteen days, ruled that there is insufficient evidence to determine whether anyone was criminally responsible for the death of Roy Mitchel Persaud, called Otis and Fineman.

The inquiry, held at the New Amsterdam Court by Coroner Sherdel IsaacsMarcus, revealed that Persaud died on May 7, 2010 at Palmyra Village, East Canje Berbice, and his death was classified “undetermined” by the lack of evidence.

The five-member jury was also unable to determine after what manner the father of two had died.

The charred remains of the former rigger attached to the Dutch company Oldendoff had been discovered in the trunk of his motor car, PEE 9632, at Palmyra Village, East Canje, quite a distance from where he lived at Mount Sinai, commonly referred to as Angoy’s Avenue, a squatting area on the eastern fringe of the New Amsterdam township.

Persaud had also been a taxi driver at nights, and was last seen at Main and Pitt Street in the New Amsterdam Township on the night of May 7, 2010. His friend Rocky Khan recounted that

the now deceased Persaud would park his vehicle and wait to solicit passengers.

He, the witness, a GuySuCo employee, would park the company lorry for a moment, and the two men would engage in conversation.

At about 21:00hrs on the day in question, Persaud was last seen conversing with two car operators and a friend.

An hour and a half later, an unknown male of East Indian ancestry approached Persaud and indicated that he wanted to travel to East Canje. Thereafter, a man of African ancestry, who had been known to Persaud, j o i n e d P e r s a u d ’s c a r.

Minutes later, three unknown men of East Indian ancestry joined Persaud’s car, which then left for East Canje.

T h e f o l l o w i n g d a y, Khan reported that he failed in attempts to contact

the cause of death was undetermined.

The relatives of Roy Mitchel Peraud had described the remains which were found in the trunk of the burnt out white Toyota Carina motor car as “pieces of bones”. Persaud’s mother S h i r a Ta h a l r e c o u n t e d that she had last seen her only son, hours before he went missing after he had stopped at her Smythfield residence in New Amsterdam, saying he was hungry.

“I wasn’t finished cooking; however, I sent to purchase food to satisfy his hunger,” she recollected to this reporter.

According to information, her son went to his home, but left there hours after, to work as a hire car driver. Ms. Tahal recounted that, the following day, she received a telephone call from her grandchildren Roy Michael Persaud

his friend via his cellular phone. However, subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Roger Grovsner, who was one of the last persons seen in Persaud’s car the same night he disappeared. Grovsner had declined to give a written statement.

In the meanwhile, the police, acting on information, went to Palmyra Village where, at the Rose Hall Sugar Estate Main Access Road, a damaged and discoloured motor car was seen. The trunk, when opened, contained what appeared to be human remains, which were wrapped in plastic and taken to the Old New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary.

A subsequent postmortem of the remains, conducted by Government Forensic Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, ruled that

The woman related that after making several calls to relatives, various police stations and friends to ascertain her s o n ’s w h e r e a b o u t s , and after receiving no useful information, she proceeded to Central Police Station, where she made a missing person report.

A return visit to the police station the following day resulted in an inquiry from a plainclothes rank, and confirmed Ms. Tahal’s fears that her son had been kidnapped and murdered.

She said her husband and other relatives left for the scene, and they reported that there was no way they could identify the body as it was “pieces of bones”.

Johnson ruled out of Sydney fourth Test PACE spearhead succumbs to hamstring injury, paving the way for Mitchell Starc’s return Mitchell Johnson has been ruled out of the fourth Commonwealth Bank Test against India due to a hamstring injury he picked up during the third Test in Melbourne last week.

Johnson didn’t train with his teammates yesterday and Bupa Support Staff physiotherapist Alex Kountouris confirmed this morning that the left-armer has not fully recovered from soreness in his right hamstring.

Kountouris said the 33-year-old was expected to be fit in time for the Carlton Mid ODI Tri-Series with India and England, starting on January 16, ahead of the World Cup next month.

“Mitchell had some right hamstring soreness during the Boxing Day Test and we have been closely monitoring his recovery since that match but feel he has not fully recovered,” said Kountouris.

Coach Darren Lehmann added: “Mitchell is an important part of our

plans for the remainder of our summer and we want him 100 per cent right so won’t be taking any risks with him.”

“We believe it is best for Mitchell to take this opportunity to freshen up and get his body fully fit ahead of the tri-series.”

Johnson’s absence for the Sydney Test opens the door for Mitchell Starc to return to the side for his second match of the series.

Starc, Peter Siddle and Ashton Agar are part of an extended squad for this Test and all three will hit the nets

Roller coaster ride for Guyana’s cricket in 2014

By Calvin Roberts THE YEAR 2014 can best be described as a roller coaster ride for the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and even Cricket Guyana Inc., if one is to look closely at the performances of our players during the past year.

Things started with a semifinal appearance in the inaugural West Indies Cricket Board/NAGICO Super-50 tournament where the Guyana Malta Supreme team led by Demerara Cricket Club all-rounder Christopher Barnwell, lost to eventual champions Barbados.

This was after the team defeated Ireland and defending champions Windward Islands in their preliminary round matches, before going down to Jamaica in their final group match, a loss that did not hamper their semifinal spot.

That team comprised players in the calibre of dependable West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Leon Johnson, Royston Crandon, Narsingh Deonarine, Assad Fudadin, Trevon Griffith, Devendra Bishoo, Veerasammy Permaul and Anthony Bramble.

Ronsford Beaton shared the new ball with Paul Wintz and they were both impressive while doing so, leaving their names on the minds of several cricketing pundits, with Beaton being tagged the fastest bowler of the tournament.

As usual, the spin twins in Permaul and Bishoo led the Guyanese bowling attack well with support from Deonarine, Barnwell and at times Fudadin, but against Barbados in the semifinal, the team was hampered by influenza, with only Bishoo, Permaul and Bramble not being affected by the flu bug.

The Malta Supreme Guyana lineup started their campaign with a 114 run victory over Ireland, scoring 301 for 3 with Sarwan topscoring with 89, followed by 79 from Chanderpaul and 62 from Griffith, before Wintz took 3 for 30, Deonarine 2 for 6 and Beaton 2 for 41 to bowl out Ireland for 187.

At the same time, the females were performing creditably well in the WICB Regional tournament before they too suffered a humiliating defeat

Tremayne Smartt at the hands of Jamaica in the finals, a team they had beaten in the preliminary round, preventing the Guyanese from dominating all regional tournaments that were being contested during the June to August playing period.

With the implementation of the WICB’s Professional Cricket League and the drafting of players, the Guyana Jaguars gave local cricket fans much to smile about in their four matches to date, winning three and losing one,

by a mere two runs to the Barbados Pride.

The action started with an innings and 10 runs victory over Leeward Islands, wherein Guyana Jaguars scored 343 with Deonarine

Brian Sattaur hitting an unbeaten 110, Bramble 46 and Chanderpaul 45, before Permaul, Beaton and Bishoo took 3 wickets each to bowl out the Leeward Islands for 94.

Batting a second time, the visitors fared better, but were still bowled out for 239 inside three days, with Bishoo picking up 4 for 67 and Permaul and Raymond Reifer, Guyana Jaguars’ lone foreign player, supporting with two wickets each.

The second game against the Windward Islands Volcanoes saw the first day being washed out due to rain, but when play got underway, Guyana posted 291 all out with Deonarine hitting his second successive ton, 139 and Chanderpaul 62.

Deonarine returned with the ball to claim 5 for 24 and along with Permaul’s 3 for 40 and Bishoo’s 2 for 66 bowled out the opposition for 184, following which the Jaguars batting a second time posted 175 for 6 declared.

They were led by 44 from Chanderpaul, 34 from Deonarine and an unbeaten 29 from Reifer, setting the Volcanoes a victory target of 283, but they were bowled out for 190, despite 55 from Devon Smith, 39 from Sunil Ambris and 38 from Andre Fletcher, thanks to Permaul’s 8 for 36, for match figures of 11- 76.

It was Permaul’s back to back 10 wickets match haul that propelled Guyana Jaguars into a winning position against the Barbados Pride, with Bramble topscoring with 73 and Shimron Hetmyer 47 as the home team posted 261 all out.

Permaul then took 8 for 26, as the Pride were de-

stroyed for 101 and asked to follow on scored 228 all out, with Permaul claiming 4 for 75 (12 for 101), Bishoo 4 for 65 and Barnwell 2 for 21, setting Guyana Jaguars 69 to score a comfortable win.

But Dwayne Smith had other ideas in mind and having snared 5 for 17 with his medium pace bowling, backed by Jonathan Carter and Ryan Hinds’ two wickets each, caged the Jaguars for 67 to hand Barbados Pride a two runs victory and at the same time keep their 30 year old record of never losing a four day match to Guyana in Guyana, intact.

Even though they suffered the loss, the Jaguars journeyed to T&T a confident bunch to take on the home team in their final round match before the break and indebted to skipper Vishaul Singh’s 141, an unbeaten 65 from Barnwell, 60 from Rajendra Chandrika, 58 from Reifer and an unbeaten 50 from Permaul, posted 492 all out in reply to T&T’s 198.

In the home team’s innings, Lendl Simmons and Yannick Cariah topscored with 59 and 51 respectively, while Bishoo took 4 for 49 and Deonarine 3 for 25, before Permaul took 4 for 51, Bishoo 3 for 82 and Beaton 2 for 24 to send T&T Red force crashing to 234 and an innings and 60 runs defeat.

At the break, Deonarine who belatedly received a West Indies call up was the Jaguars’ leading run scorer with 306 runs at an average of 61.20 inclusive of two centuries, followed

by Chandrika with 169 (28.16) and Singh with his 161 (54.33).

Permaul is the leading wicket taker with his 32 victims snared at an average of 10.09 and includes his best of 8 for 26 against Barbados Pride, followed by Bishoo with 21 (19.95) and Deonarine next in line with 9 victims at an average of 20.33.

Such performances along with the hosting of their annual awards ceremony which saw Permaul being named the Male Cricketer of the Year and Tremayne Smartt the Female Cricketer of the Year, the Guyana Cricket Board and even Cricket Guyana Inc. can smile at a year that started rocky and ended smoothly to date.

Overseas based friends of YWCC donate funds to purchase covers SOMETIME last year, an unknown character needlessly stole from the Young Warriors Cricket Club (YWCC), their covers that is used to cover the pitch in the night and when the rain falls during matches being hosted at the New Amsterdam, Canje based venue.

However, at a simple ceremony held recently, overseas based friends of the YWCC handed over US$450.00 to assist with the purchase of the pitch covers, on behalf of Mel Carpen, Dave Sookrah,, Chin Singh, Outram and Ramoo Singh who handed over the funds.

Minimum ban for doping increased from two years to four

DRUG cheats in sport face a minimum four-year ban under new rules which came into effect from January 1..

Changes to the World Anti-Doping Code, which unifies anti-doping rules for global sports, have increased the suspension for doping from two years.

Other changes will see less leniency given for missed tests but possible reduced bans for helping investigators.

UK sports minister Helen Grant said the changes would “better protect clean athletes around the world”.

“Successful implementation will mean an innovative and robust anti-doping programme that reaches further than ever before, to more athletes, more support personnel and more sport lovers, all of who want to be part of sport free from doping,” she added in a statement via UK Anti-Doping.

“We will see tougher sanctions - not just for athletes, but also for those who assist in the doping process.”

The punishment for missing three tests within a 12-month period has been increased from 18 months to two years.

While deliberate cheating leads to a four-year ban, athletes guilty of “inadvertent doping” will receive a two-year ban - although they can get a reduction if they have “substantial proof that they were not at fault or intending to cheat”.

Wada said the 2015 code had more incentive for anyone providing “substantial assistance” in uncovering doping.

“Admitting a violation can be rewarded with a reduced ban, with Wada having the final say. In exceptional cases, Wada has the power to eliminate a ban entirely and offer complete confidentiality for substantial assistance,” it said.

Maltese PM urges team not to sign footballer convicted of rape

VALLETTA ,(Reuters) Malta’s prime minister urged a local soccer club yesterday not to sign convicted British rapist Ched Evans, saying it could hurt Malta’s image, and Britain’s Justice Ministry said it did not usually let newly-released offenders go abroad.

British media on Friday revealed plans by Hibernians to sign Evans, a former Sheffield United and Wales striker who has been unable to secure a contract in the English league since his release from jail in October.

Earlier on Saturday, Maltese Justice Minister Owen Bonnici argued that Evans deserved a second chance.

“We should not only speak about rehabilitation of ex-prisoners, we must also practise what we preach,” he tweeted.

Powell misses out again as Thomas leads Leewards in Super50 BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, (CMC) – Rising West Indies star Kieran Powell is set to also miss out on the NAGICO Super50.

The 24-year-old lefthander was once again a glaring omission from the Leeward Hurricanes 14-man squad announced this week to contest the January 15-24 championship in Trinidad and Tobago.

T20 has messed our cricket up - Lloyd

By Firdose Moonda FORMER West Indies captain Clive Lloyd has said that West Indies cricket has been “messed up” by the T20 format, creating a situation where playing Tests for the country did not seem to be a paramount goal for players.

Speaking at the Annual New Year’s lecture in Cape Town, which is also hosting the third Test between South Africa and West Indies, Lloyd said that the ICC needed to be stronger and that the game could not be ruled by only three countries - a reference to the governance and financial restructuring of the ICC cricket’s governing body, which took place last year and was based on changes devised by the BCCI, Cricket Australia and the ECB. “They [the players] earn a good wage and that’s the situation that they have. They have the choice to play Test cricket or T20,” Lloyd, who is head of the West Indies selection panel, said. “We

“Someone like Andre Russell, I spoke to him only a month ago and said you can get into our Test side because you are one of the best allrounders in the world.

A couple of weeks later he told me he has got a bad knee and could only play one-dayers. It’s such a waste that we have a guy who could be a great cricketer who is now not thinking of playing both formats.

We have contracts,

probably not as exorbitant as others, but they are getting good money. It doesn’t seem playing for our country is paramount where these players are concerned.

“I don’t think there is any cricketer who should strike for money now because they are well paid. We have to impart to our young people the importance of playing for your country. Money is a subsidiary of success.”

Lloyd, who has had stints as an international match referee and as chairman of the ICC’s cricket committee, said that the ICC should be

running the game and it was important for the governing body to work out a better system of revenue distribution for all countries.

The revamp of the ICC last year, based on changes devised by the Indian, Australia and English boards, gave more influence to the three boards. Lloyd also stated that policies like the use of Decision Review System (DRS) should be unanimously followed.

“I agree that the ICC must be stronger. It should be like the FIFA or the IOC [International Olympic Committee] - very strong in the things they do. FIFA said when you kick the ball back to the goalkeeper he has got to kick it out. I don’t see Italy and England and France saying we are not playing.

We have one team playing without DRS. If we have something it has got to be globally done.

Everybody has got to work together.

“We can’t have three countries ruling cricket. It can’t be done. It comes back to money. I hope one day everything will come back

to normal.

I think the ICC should be running cricket. They should say to the highest bidder, television company to send out a tender - saying we want 5 million for so many Test matches for the next couple of years.

That money should be distributed either on rankings or equally. That money can be used to run cricket properly. Players can be paid better. If we are saying Test cricket is the highest cricket you can play, you should be paid better. We all have to sit down and work out a better system for all countries.”

Lloyd gave the example of West Indies, who could benefit from the distribution of TV revenues: “Where West Indies is concerned, we have a special case. We have to fly everywhere. We can’t drive anywhere. you can’t go by boat either. It’s expensive for West Indies to hold Test series. It’s in high season and we have to compete with that.

We can’t fill the stadium. We don’t have the

amount of people to do so. Television would help us out in that respect. We would just play cricket and we wouldn’t have any wranglings. We have a system.”

Lloyd said that the establishment of a national cricket fund, to aid retired cricketers, is imperative and the fund could be built through proceeds from one game of a Test series, or a percentage of television deals.

“In spite of the big contracts a few of our players receive for various T20 tournaments, we must recognise that these are only a few players and it is imperative that a national cricket fund be established,” he said. “ We s h o u l d p l a y a game in every Test series and those proceeds should go to a fund for retired cricketers. When we have television deals, a percentage of that should go to the fund.

There are quite a few people who played for their country and I think they should have some remuneration.” (ESPN)

Guyana Jaguars commence preparation for NAGICO Super 50

RIDING HIGH on confidence after ending 2014 on top of the points table in the West Indies Cricket Board/ Professional Cricket League Regional four-day cricket tournament, the Guyana Jaguars squad last Saturday commenced preparation for this year’s NAGICO Super 50 tournament, which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from 15 th to 24 th January with a fitness session at the Guyana National Stadium.

Eight teams will do battle for supremacy out of two groups, with the Jaguars being placed in group ‘A’ alongside defending champions Barbados Pride, Windward Islands Volcanoes and the Combined Campuses and Colleges, all of whom they will meet in the preliminary round.

Crandon added.

Colin Stuart, underwent fitness sessions including beep test, runner three, 10-meter get up and sprint and 40-meter sprint which was checked at four stations.

However, rain interrupted the sessions but Crandon said he was pleased with what he saw from the players prior to the interruption, calling it an improvement in their fitness

level.

“Looking at the results it’s evident that there is an improvement, we want to see the players maintain a certain level of fitness,”

He stated that the team spirit is high and they are looking to continue their good showing from the four-day competition, adding, “We are working to improve in all as-

pects of the game and we need to renew our attitude in 2015.

A professional work ethics is also important.”

Crandon was also optimistic of the Jaguars’ chances in the tournament, one that saw them meeting the semifinal stage before losing to the Barbados Pride, who went onto defeat the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force to take the title.

“Looking at the squad, we have some very talented players and it is very important how we use them. It is vital that we get off to a good start so that we can build on it, but it is not going to be an easy task, but we are capable enough,” said Crandon.

The team is expected to be announced soon and will have two practice matches on Wednesday and Friday, before departing for the Twin Island Republic on Tuesday 13th January and swing into action two days later when they oppose the Volcanoes at the picturesque Queen’s Park Oval in their first match.

Grove Hi Tech were led by their prolific scorer, Domini Garnett who netted all their goals, as they trounced Ann’s Grove 5-0 to lift the championship trophy and $1.5M first place cheque compliments of Ansa McAl. lead New Amsterdam United to a 5-1 routing of Cougars to win the third place clash and prize of $300 000.

Witnessed by a sea of colourful spectators on a windy New Year’s Night, fans were treated to a goal fest and while hundreds left the venue in an ecstatic mood, many others left deflated after their teams were left defeated.

Like he did against New Amsterdam United when he netted the winning hat-trick, Domini Garnett rose to the occasion yet again rattling off all five goals either side of play as Grove Hi Tech

(Grove) totally annihilated their rivals from the East Coast of Demerara.

The champions started somewhat shakily as Ann’s Grove took the early fight to them on a well clipped and maintained field. Scoring during their previous encounters was a tough task for Ann’s Grove who only netted three goals in their three previous wins; two of which were won via penalty

kicks, 5-3 on each occasion.

On the other hand, Grove possessed a lethal scoring machine in Garnett who ended the tournament like Adrian Adams of NA United with 9 goals. Grove had scored six times in the run-up to the championship match while conceding only two goals; so it was going to be an uphill battle for the Ann’s Grove defenders to stave off the rampant Garnett.

And so it turned out, Garnett was too hot for his opponents to handle.

Frank Worrell Trophy dates confirmed DOMINICA and Jamaica to host Tests in June as Australia seek to extend domination over West Indies Venues for Australia’s two-Test tour to the West Indies in June for the defence of the Frank Worrell Trophy have been confirmed.

Australia will play the first Test at Windsor Park, Roseau, in Dominica, starting on June 5.

The second Test will start on June 13 at Jamaica’s Sabina Park in Kingston.

The tourists will play a warm-up match at a venue yet to

be determined before the first Test, starting on May 30.

Australia visited Dominca on their last tour of the region in 2012, a 75-run win securing a 2-0 series victory on the back of a first-innings century by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade and five second-innings wickets to captain Michael Clarke.

Australia last played at Sabina Park in 2008, where Ricky Ponting’s 158 and Stuart Clark’s 5-32 helped the tourists to a 95-run win.
