No sign of missing Air Services Limited plane, crew – Rescue coordination activated; search to continue today

AN Air Services Limited (ASL) aircraft transporting cargo from Mahdia to Karisparu, Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni) reportedly went off grid around noon yesterday.

The Cessna Britten Norman Islander, bearing the registration number 8R-GHE, had two persons onboard at the time, namely the captain, Nicky Persaud, 27, and cargo loader, Mr David Bisnauth, 51.

According to ASL’s Ms Annette Arjoon-Martins, the aircraft was on one of its regular shuttle flights, and that within 10 minutes of taking off, it had lost communication contact with base.

She said that within half an hour, four other aircrafts were deployed to execute search-and-rescue operations, followed within another hour-and-a-half by two ASL-owned helicopters. The carefully selected aircrafts, she said, were capable of flying “very low and slow,” so as to be able to effectively capture images beneath.

Reports are that the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCCA) activated its Rescue Coordination Centre at the Timehri Control Tower as soon as it was alerted.

yesterday, despite hours of search and rescue efforts, there was no sign of the aircraft.

Said Arjoon-Martins of the search-and rescue operation, “They combed the areas underneath, but came up with nothing,” even though the aircraft had a ‘spot tracker’ on board.

She added: “They have the full cooperation of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF); the ranks are spe-

cially trained in retrieval on the ground, and together, the parties have done all they could have perceivably done to track the missing aircraft, but they have come up with nothing.”

A statement from the GCCA has confirmed that some six aircrafts were deployed in the search-andrescue mission, including: * Two ASL Cessna 208 Caravans flying within the area, which were rerouted to commence search for the aircraft; * A Piper Cherokee from Hinterland Aviation; * An ASL Bell Helicopter, which departed Ogle Airport to join the search for

the aircraft; and * An ASL Caravan, which departed for Mahdia at 16:16 local time with a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Special Forces Unit to assist in the search-andrescue operation.

According to GCCA, “To date, 6 hours and 40 minutes search time was logged by four fixed-wing aircraft and two helicopters... The two helicopters and one Cessna Caravan are at Mahdia, and will recommence search at sunrise tomorrow (today).”

It said that another aircraft from ASL will depart early today to join the search efforts, and take in the GCAA Coordinators and

Investigation team.

The GDF helicopter is also reportedly on standby to join the search-and-rescue operation.

Meanwhile, the Timehri Air Traffic Control has since confirmed that it lost communication with the aircraft around noon, resulting in the activation of the Rescue Coordination Centre at the Timehri Control Tower.

According to Air Traffic Control, the Cessna Britten Norman Islander took off from Mahdia at 15:42 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), 11:42 local time, on a routine local cargo flight, and the last known position was Spot Tracker hit at 15:44

UTC, 11:44 local time. The aircraft was estimated to arrive Karisparu at 16:00 UTC, 12:00 local time. At 16:20, Timehri Air Traffic Control made contact with the aircraft operator to establish whether the aircraft landed before implementing a search-and-rescue operation.

After no information was received, Air Traffic Control commenced the ‘alert phase’, and the Rescue Coordination Centre at the Timehri Control Tower was activated.

Indonesia halts search for missing AirAsia plane as night falls website and social media accounts.

“This is my worst nightmare,” Fernandes said on Twitter. “But there’s no stopping”, he said of the search.

The incident caps a disastrous year for Malaysia-affiliated airlines. Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 went missing on March 8 on a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board and has not been found. On July 17, the same airline’s Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

PRAYING FOR PASSENGERS Indonesia President Joko Widodo urged his people to pray for the safety of the passengers and crew. During his Sunday address at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, Pope Francis said those on board were in his prayers.

The head of Indonesia’s transport safety committee expressed hope of locating QZ8501 quickly and said it was too soon to detect the so-called electronic pings from its black box recorder.

“We are using our capacity to search on sea and land,” Tatang Kurniadi told a news conference in Jakarta.

Indonesian officials from the civil aviation authority and transport safety committee, which are responsible for crash investgiations, arrived in Surabaya on Sunday.

A transport ministry official said Indonesia would handle the probe.

“The aircraft was registered in Indonesia and it looks to be missing over Indonesian territory, so we will lead the investigation,” said the official, who asked not to be named as he was not authorised to speak to media.”We have the expertise to do this.”

New poll finds Caribbean voters abandoning Britain’s Labour Party LONDON, (CMC) – A new poll conducted among ethnic minority voters here has found that Caribbean, Indian and African voters are abandoning the main opposition British Labour Party (BLP).

According to the Ethnic Minority British Election Study, the number of minority voters, including Caribbean nationals, who support the Labor Party, has fallen since 2010.

According to the Daily Mail, the party has traditionally benefited from the ethnic minority vote, specially with people of Afro-Caribbean descent.

But figures from the

study show that the number of African voters who say they identify with Labor has slipped from 79 to 63 per cent since 1997, while Caribbean support has fallen from 78 to 67 per cent.

“The ethnic minorities are seen to be the core of Labour party vote, they have been for years, for decades, but I will make these people here representing Labour a little bit uncomfortable about this assumption that minorities will vote for them as a matter of course,” Dr. Maria Sobolewska, an expert from Manchester University and part of the team conducting

the Ethnic Minority British Election Study, told a conference here.

News that Labour is falling out of favour with ethnic minority voters comes after research released earlier this year predicted that Britain’s black and ethnic minority communities could account for almost a third of the population by 2050.

It said currently, eight million people, or 14 per cent of the United Kingdom (UK) population, are from ethnic minorities.

But the paper said they now account for 80 per cent of population growth, while

the white population remains constant.

The Ethnic Minority British Election Study, which was undertaken by researchers from Oxford, Manchester and Essex universities, said, in the last general election, the incumbent Conservatives received 16 per cent of ethnic minority votes, while Labour had 68 per cent.

EDITORIAL

A case of absolute selfishness and moral turpitude Christmas is the most anticipated and celebrated holiday in the world, across every divide in the social dynamics of humankind.

In Guyana, even the poorest of homes is cleaned and decorated and the best food prepared for that special day. Many Guyanese domiciled abroad save all year long and make sacrifices so that they can return home to enjoy with family and friends that holiday with its flavours and ambience peculiar only to their homeland.

Bonuses are spent on shopping sprees for gifts, foodstuff and decorations. Housewives clean, cook and bake, and children eagerly await Christmas morning to discover whether Santa had left the toys on their wish list under the Christmas Tree, or in the oversized stocking by the door.

Grandparents who realise that

their time on earth is fast coming to an end look forward to a special day spent surrounded by all their family members, or as many as can make the journey home.

Then the madness begins. And the joy, peace and anticipation are shattered with the blast of someone’s stereo system turned to the highest volume. One family decide their enjoyment comes before that of anyone else’s in an entire community.

Families who long scrimped and saved to have that special holiday shared with loved ones cannot have a conversation, because their voices are drowned. Favourite Christmas-time movies, such as the Home Alone series, Dennis the Menace, Jingle Bells, and others have to be abandoned because the television cannot be heard above the mainly lewd, embarrassingly vulgar ca-

cophony emanating from the large boxes strategically placed for the greatest projection of the noise.

Decent families are shamed because of the explicit lyrics describing the various sexual encounters between deviants; and grandparents despair at the direction of the young generation who are subjected to such indecencies as a normal, even on such a Holy day as the Lord’s birthday.

One grandmother who lives in the Eccles neighbourhood had to send her grandchildren away because the deafening noise from next door assailing their homemade conversation, and pretty much every activity, impossible and pointless; plus the dirty lyrics were inappropriate for the sensibilities of teenage boys enjoying a special day with their grandmother.

Attempts to elicit help from the Providence Police Station was pointless because the grandmother tried to get relief from the deafening, vulgar noise from the Police at that Station throughout the day until late in the night, without success, despite many promises.

And calling 911 is an exercise in futility, because no one ever answers that police emergency number.

The grandmother had to flee her home late in the night after she developed a migraine attack.

The unsuccessful calls for help from police for noise nuisance that impairs the health, affects students’ studying for exams, and

destroys the quality of life of victims in a multiplicity of ways have resounded in Guyana’s social milieu for decades without surcease, despite many promises from relevant authorities at various times to adopt ‘zero tolerance’ for this social anathema that has caused severe angst in peaceful, law-abiding families and communities, while the victims are treated like nuisances attempting to curtail the enjoyment of the culprits; and there seems to be no end to this scourge, for the police are themselves contributing to the problem. Most of them have emerged from communities where such aberrant behavior is a norm.

AFC’s Glass House

THE Alliance for Change (AFC) should be the last grouping of persons to speak on certain matters since its leadership has been embroiled in repeated controversy over the last few years – a clear case of its members living in glass houses, yet insistent on throwing stones. Notably too is that the evidence of this is a matter of public record; it is well documented.

AFC’s Leader, Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan, himself has consistently misused his Parliamentary position to advance the cause of clients who retain him in his private capacity as a lawyer. For example it was alleged that he was retained by Fedders Lloyd to challenge in court the award of the Specialty Hospital to Surendra Engineering Company Limited (SECL). Fedders Lloyd was one of the unsuccessful bidders in this case. Mr. Ramjattan never filed any legal proceedings; instead he used his votes in the Parliament to withhold budgetary allocations for the project. He was

also retained by Mr. Robert Badal, owner of the Pegasus Hotel, to challenge in court the Marriot Hotel project. Again, he never filed any legal proceeding but misused his Parliamentary standing to withhold budgetary allocations for the project. Also, the AFC Leader is currently on trial at the Legal Practitioners’ Committee on the merits of an allegation from a one-legged beggar who claims that Mr. Ramjattan’s professional misconduct caused him to lose his property.

On the other hand there is Mr. Moses Nagamootoo who was retained for several years by NICIL and paid over $6M. He never disclosed that to the Parliament, even as he and his party continued to attack NICIL in and out of the National Assembly.

The Standing Orders of Parliament mandate that such disclosures must be made.

The same Nagamootoo also told the nation that the President’s pension was never supported by him and he was put to shame by

a Government Member of Parliament who produced the evidence in the Hansard that showed that he did in fact vote in support of the Presidential pension package.

There is also Mrs. Cathy Hughes whose public relations company was retained by Fip Motilall of Synergy Inc., which was involved with the Amaila Hydropower project, and this was never disclosed to the Parliament.

Yet, in all this time her party was voting against Amaila.

AFC Chairman, Mr. Nigel Hughes, is just the same. He held the position of Synergy Inc.’s Company Secretary. This fact he never disclosed, not even to his party, because when information became public, Mr. Ramjattan at least had the decency of confessing that he was unaware that Mr. Hughes was the firm’s Company Secretary. Also, Mr. Hughes was the lawyer of the foreman of the jury in the Lusignan massacre. He acted as the foreman’s lawyer in a civil case that lasted seven

years in the High Court. That matter concluded mere months before the murder trial started. Yet, Mr. Hughes outrageously contended that he did not remember that he represented the foreman, although he acted on behalf of this man for seven years. Mr. Hughes was also implicated in another scandal where he refused to honour his contractual obligations to the owner of Mae’s Secondary School, by passing the title of ownership for the property on which the school stood within the time stipulated in the contract. This caused a bank to foreclose a mortgage on the school’s premises, jeopardising the welfare of dozens of students who were preparing to write CSEC examamnations.

Indeed these are the last set of persons to speak on any matter regarding law.

People clearly must not throw stones when they reside in glass houses.

Ferry being towed to Italy with hundreds still awaiting airlift

By Renee Maltezou ATHENS ,(Reuters) ITALI AN an d Greek helicopter crews worked into the night to airlift passengers off a burning ferry adrift in the Adriatic Sea, battling darkness and bad weather that hampered rescue efforts by other ships throughout Sunday.

Helicopters were plucking passengers off the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic and transferring them to a nearby vessel, after a dramatic day that began when a fire broke out on its lower deck in the early hours.

Authorities said one Greek man had died and there were reports of four injured among 478 passengers and crew and as night

fell. Italian authorities said 172 people were clear of the danger zone.

Greek Shipping Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said the fire now appeared to be partly under control and said the ship would be towed to Italy after an official said it would go to an Albanian port. Italian officials said it would probably be taken to either Brindisi or Otranto on the southern coast once towing cables could be securely attached.

The airlifts would continue while the boat was being towed towards port, and rescue workers would try to get closer by boat to bring people off if conditions allowed, he said.

“It will be a very difficult night and I hope that everything will go well and we will rescue all pas-

sengers and all crew members,” Varvitsiotis told reporters.

The Italian navy said two Italian airforce helicopters, one Greek Superpuma helicopter and an Italian plane were taking part in the rescue, winching up passengers in small groups. Other aircraft and 10 ships were also taking part in the operation in support roles.

Earlier, Greek coastguard spokesman Nikos Lagkadianos said the heavy rain that was hampering the rescue had helped contain the fire although the ship was still burning.

Terrified passengers told how they had to move higher and higher in the ship to escape the flames.

“We went to the deck

where there were life boats, but at some point we felt the floor burning and we went higher up to the heliport,” Rania Fireou told Greek television by phone before the airlifts began.

“There are many children and elderly people aboard,” she said. “We have gathered all together and we are trying to warm ourselves.”

COMPLICATED RESCUE Varvitsiotis said the bad weather, with winds of up to 55 mph (88 kph) earlier, made the operation one of the most complex Greek authorities had been involved in and vowed that no one would be left behind.

Coastguard officials said the Norman Atlantic, which was also car-

rying more than 200 vehicles, was 44 nautical miles northwest of the island of Corfu when it radioed for help. It had been traveling from Patras in western Greece to the Italian city of Ancona.

Command of the operation was transferred to Italy after winds took the helpless vessel out of Greek waters but officials were coordinating closely and an Albanian coastguard vessel was also taking part.

A coastguard official said nearby passenger and container ships had attempted to form a ring around the burning vessel to try to form a windbreak to allow small rescue boats to approach.

Officials said most of the passengers were Greek but the passenger

list included names from several other countries including Germany, Italy, Austria, Turkey, France and the Netherlands.

Many appeared to be truck drivers.

The fire broke out in the lower deck garage of the vessel but there were differing accounts of when it started. Initial reports said the fire began at around 6.00 a.m.

(0400 GMT) but Italian officials put the time at 4.30 a.m.

The Norman Atlantic is a 26,900-tonne, rollon roll-off ferry chartered by Greek ferry c o m p a n y A N E K . A ccording to marine traffic data, it was built in 2009 and previously operated in Italy. ANEK said in a statement it was cooperating with rescue authorities.

GROUNDS FOR RECOMMENDATION Ali-Hack, in a statement issued to the media, said that the subject of the investigation was

an alleged recording of a private conversation between Nandlall and Gildharie.

As such, based on the evidence contained in the police file, the DPP concluded that the recorded conversation was not between the Attorney General and the publisher of Kaieteur News, Glen Lall, who filed the police complaint against Nandlall.

She noted that Section 141 (a) Chapter 8:02 addresses threatening language with intent to provoke anyone else to commit a breach of

the peace, that is provoking another person to do so.

However, the DPP said, “The threatening language must be such as is likely to provoke a breach of the peace by anyone else, that is the person to whom the threat is directed. For the threatening language to result in provocation, the threat must be directly communicated to the person to whom it concerns, that is, in his presence and hearing. There is no evidence of this contained in the police file.”

Ali-Hack added that Section 141 (b) Chapter

8:02 addresses a person use of abusive, insulting, obscene or profane language to the annoyance of another, that is, such language is used directly to the other person in his presence and annoys him.

However, in this case too, she concluded that there is no evidence of this.

“The alleged recording of a telephone conversation between the Attorney General and the Minister of Legal Affairs and Mr. Gildharie does not fall under Section 1a1 (a) or (b) Chapter 8:02,” the DPP said.

As it relates to the circumstances of the communication, Ali-Hack made it clear that the Kaieteur News reporter has not provided any “evidential basis” that can support the institution of criminal proceedings.

Ali-Hack stressed too that she continues to maintain the integrity of the DPP’s Chambers by giving legal advice according to the statements in the police files and the Laws of Guyana, and this is done regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation.

Noteworthy too is the fact that since the

matter surfaced, concerns in several sections of society have surfaced over the privacy of confidential personal communications – a matter covered under several international treaties and obligations. Also, Guyana’s Constitution, Article 154 (A) makes it clear that local functionaries in the judicial system, including judges, are required to take into account international law and Guyana’s treaty obligations in their deliberations.

Article 154 (A) addresses the protection of human rights.

Holiday road carnage continues...

President’s College student is latest road fatality

By Leroy Smith A 13-YEAR-OLD President’s College student was killed yesterday morning after he was struck off his pedal cycle by a car, the driver of which persons in the area allege was speeding at the time of the accident.

Dead is Cojoe McPherson Junior, of Lot 755 Fifth Street Dazzel Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, who was running an erand for his father when the accident occurred. At the time of his demise, the death toll for road accidents between last Wednesday and yesterday stood at ten.

Speaking with this newspaper late yesterday from his Dazzel Housing Scheme home, Cojoe McPherson Senior, the dead lad’s father, said he was at home when someone came on a cycle calling for him. He said when he approached the man, he immediately sensed that something was wrong with his son; he even asked if his son was dead, but all the messenger did was encourage him to take a walk with him.

dead in the ‘grass-corner’ on the Railway Embankment at Paradise; his head was awash with blood, and he was also bleeding through his mouth.

According to the shaken gentleman, when he looked at the car, he immediately knew that his son was in the right, and that it was the driver of the car who had erred.

However, the driver initially claimed that it was the child who was in the wrong, although he could not explain in what way, and how come the left side of his windscreen

was shattered rather than the right side.

Mr McPherson described his son as a child after his own heart, particularly where his scholastic ability was concerned, as substantiated by many who showed up at the family’s home to offer their condolences.

They described the child’s death as “the killing of a future president.”

According to Mr McPherson, when he looked at the driver of the car, the man appeared to be under the in-

fluence of something, though he could not say what. He admitted that he did not smell alcohol on the man; nor did the man appear to have been drinking.

Other persons to whom this newspaper spoke said that the driver’s under-the-influence appearance was nothing strange, as that’s the way he’s always looked.

Some also associated the man with reckless driving along the East Coast corridor, as they made reference to the speed at which he would usually be seen driving and traversing the areas between Victoria and Paradise.

Cojoe’s dad also called for stricter penalties for drivers who would have caused the death of persons due to careless, reckless and dangerous driving.

The man said his family does not really celebrate Christmas, as they are more focused on preserving their lives and hence the drinking and partying is not a feature for them. He said this unfortunate killing of his son in a road accident has placed a hole in his heart.

Meanwhile, when this newspaper visited the Cove and John Police Station, the vehicle involved in the accident was parked in the compound; also there were some of the driver’s relatives.

The police were also said

to be preparing to take the man for medical attention, after it was reported that he was beaten by persons at the scene of the accident.

They also claimed that this was not the man’s first accident of such serious proportions, as they mentioned a person who is still unable to walk properly due to an accident caused by the very errant driver.

The police are continuing their investigations into the accident.

Rosignol man takes teenaged daughter’s death hard – takes own life in recompense

By Clifford Stanley THE body of a Rosignol man who blamed himself for causing his teenaged daughter’s death in a road accident last Tuesday was yesterday found floating in a canal aback neighbouring Cotton Tree Village, in West Coast Berbice.

The remains of Alfred Branche, 62, was found by a search party around 11:00 hrs yesterday, five-and-a-half days after he had slipped out unnoticed from his home at McKenzie Street Rosignol, apparently in a state of mental anguish following the death of his daughter by accident in the car he was driving on December 23 last.

A reliable source said that there were no visible marks of violence on the body as

to suggest that Branche may have died by his own hand.

Branche, who was self-employed, was said to be a very experienced driver, and very popular in his Rosignol community.

For residents of Rosignol, it was a sad sequel to a fatal road accident.

Branche was reportedly driving a wagon last Tuesday night, when it collided with a parked vehicle on the Number 29 Village Public Road, West Coast Berbice resulting in the death of his daughter, Yonette, 16, from massive head injuries.

Relatives say that the man had been continuously distraught and inconsolable after the accidental death of his daughter.

“She had been the apple of his eye,” another daughter,

and sister of the deceased teenager, Shonette said.

He left his home at around 08:00 hrs on Christmas Eve Day. A resident of Rosignol subsequently informed the family that he had seen the missing man bare headed, heading into the backdam/ wooded area behind Rosignol earlier on that day.

Search parties of concerned villagers had been combing the back-lands of Rosignol and Cotton Tree since Christmas Eve Day, the search culminating in the discovery yesterday.

His body is at the mortuary at Fort Wellington Cottage Hospital awaiting post mortem.

The West Berbice Police are investigating. The teenaged daughter is yet to be buried.

Relatives of the dead man, who now have to pre-

pare for two funerals instead of one, were too numb with grief to talk intelligibly with the Guyana Chronicle at the time of calls yesterday.

Yonette Branche, 16, was a student of the New Amsterdam Multilateral School, and had gone with her parents to uplift a barrel and two boxes of gifts sent her by an aunt who lives overseas.

The family had collected the items in Georgetown and were on their way home around 20:00 hrs on Tuesday, the day before Christmas Eve, when the wagon driven by her father collided with a parked Canter Lorry on the side of the road at Number 29 Village.

Reports suggest that the older Branche had been dazzled by the lights of an oncoming vehicle and had pulled into the corner of the road without seeing the The Branche family in happier times vehicle parked there.

Herstelling CPG treats senior citizens for Christmas

Chairman Sewnarine Kalicharan of the HCPG and members along with senior citizens who received hampers THE Herstelling Community Policing Group (HCPG), in existence for over two decades, recently held its annual members Christmas social and awards ceremony at the Sumintra Singh Community Centre, Farm, East Bank Demerara.

The HCPG also used the occasion to assist fifteen(15) senior citizens, all residents from within the community with food hampers, which

were sponsored by members of the community policing body.

This was followed by the presentation of appreciation and recognition certificates to members of the HCPG, members of the business community and ranks of the Guyana Police Force.

One particular member, Mr. Jaldeo Sukhdeo, was acknowledged for being the longest-serving member of the HCPG, and was awarded with a certificate; he was

also the recipient of a monetary award, compliments of Mr. Cobeer Persaud, Public Relations Officer of the HCPG. In closing, the chairman, Mr. Sewnarine Kalicharan wished all a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2015, and urged all to work harder to fulfil the Group’s cause.

He also thanked the general public and business community for their continued support over the years.

DPP: Father, son to be charged with capital offence

By Leroy Smith JEROME Franklin and his son, Timmy Franklin, will both be charged with murder following the triple murder at Tuschen 11 days ago when the cane-harvester allegedly ran amok.

The Guyana Chronicle has learnt that based on the evidence available and the case put forward by the police, the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has recommended the capital charge for the father and son.

Reports are that the younger Franklin physically restrained Floyd Drakes, one of the three victims, from escaping so his father could “finish him off.”

Prior to that disclosure, however, his father had tried to clear him of any involvement in the commission of the crime, stating that it was he (Jerome Franklin) alone who had committed the act against his reputed wife’s mother and “sweet-man”.

He was at the time expressing his dismay at the police’s decision to arrest his son after he, the senior

Franklin and prime suspect in the killing, went into hiding.

Franklin also denied chopping his nine-year-old stepdaughter, Ashley, to death, saying he flew into a rage and killed his reputed wife’s mother after she attacked him with a cutlass and accidentally chopped the child in her head.

He said he cared too much for the child, whom he had supported since she was a baby, and would never do her any harm. The police, however, did not buy his story, and are relying on the statements from the lone survivor of the attack, Geeta Boodhoo, his reputed wife, to assist them in making a strong case against him.

He again tried to exonerate his son of any wrongdoing by saying that it was not he who told him that Drakes, whom he referred to as the “sweet-man”, was at Boodhoo’s house at the time, but rather a taxi driver who had dropped the man off there.

Eleven days ago, Franklin broke his way into the home of his reputed wife and began a chopping rampage that left

his reputed wife hospitalised, and his 55-year-old mother in law, Bibi Zalima Kahn; nineyear-old stepdaughter, Ashley; and 30-year-old Drakes dead.

The man reportedly made his way into the home through some louvre windows which he removed while the family was having a few drinks.

Last week, the man reportedly made contact with a section of the media to which he admitted some aspects of the crime and denied others.

He also explained what led to his actions, and his intentions to ensure that he goes to the extreme to get to his reputed wife and her sister, since according to him, they are part and parcel of the entire issue especially his reputed wife’s sister.

Upon getting wind of that threat, the police intensified their manhunt for the man and on Christmas Eve Day, he was found in the Tuschen backlands where he was hiding reportedly to make good on his threat of finishing off his reputed wife and her sister.

Enterprise youth group treats over 300 children for Christmas

THE Enterprise Youth Development Group (EYDG) recently held its annual Christmas Party for youths in their neighbourhood.

The event, which was held at Auntie Uma’s residence in Enterprise, saw over 300 children being treated to a sumptuous lunch, replete with ice-cream and Jello, finger foods, cake and sweets and a gift from Santa.

The children also had a chance to participate in novelty games and carol singing, and to learn about the story of Christmas and its origins.

According to one EYDP member, “We are very heartened to see the children having a lovely time at the party. Seeing that Christmas is the favourite time of year for every child, it’s therefore best to celebrate it with them.”

Another said, “It’s a period when you share with children, and we always feel fulfilled when I doing this. As a group of youngsters wanting to create a change, we kindled the festive spirit last year; but this year, we are keeping it alive.”

Also present at the party were Mr. & Mrs. Rickheeram, Uncle Flattie and many others who came in from the United States to make it the success it was.

Skeldon Estate worker’s dismissal...

Decision in GuySuCo, GAWU arbitration to be handed down today FORMER Chief Labour Officer, Mr Mohammed Akeel, will make public today his report on arbitration proceedings between the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU).

His report follows the establishment of an arbitration tribunal to address the dismissal of Skeldon Sugar Estate worker Daniel Stephens; that tribunal ended its sittings on November 26 after several meetings.

Under the chairmanship of Labour Minister, Dr. Nanda Gopaul, a Memorandum of Agreement between GuySuCo and GAWU was inked at a conciliatory meeting between the two bodies, which saw the following Terms of Reference (TOR) forming the basis for the work of the tribunal.

The document, which the Guyana Chronicle has seen, was signed on behalf of GuySuCo, by Messrs Jairam Pitam, Human Services Director; Deodat James Sukhu, Chief Industrial Relations Manager; and Tulsiram Seulall, Industrial Relations Officer.

Signing on GAWU’s behalf were Messrs Komal Chand, President; Seepaul Narine, General Secretary; and M. McBean, Shop Steward. The document was countersigned by current Chief Labour Officer (CLO), Mr. Charles Ogle.

As part of the TOR, it was suggested that Stephens’ dismissal be reduced to a suspension.

Stephen’s dismissal resulted in a massive strike in the sugar belt in late September, and subsequent agreement between GuySuCo and GAWU to engage the CLO. The CLO’s recommendation, made on October 1, 2014 after two meetings, was to reinstate Stephens, but was however rejected by GuySuCo.

GAWU’S ARGUMENT GAWU’s President, in an earlier comment, had explained that the strike stemmed from an alleged altercation between Estate Manager, Mr. Dave Kumar and Stephens.

He said the report he received was that on the day in question, at around 11:30pm, the Estate Manager, who had allegedly been drinking, was on his way to the Dock Mill, where a cane harvest had been offloading. Before he reached there, he met several workers and reportedly asked them to move.

The allegation is that all the workers did not remove immediately, and the Estate Manger became incensed.

“The report we have is that the worker was verbally abused; he was cursed at, and there was a scuffle, where the Estate Manger allegedly attempted to hit him,” Chand had said.

He at the time said that the worker continued working, but was later informed that he was being fired, and was escorted off the premises by the Estate’s security personnel.

Consequently, workers moved to strike action, and GAWU contends that the disciplinary code of action was not adhered to.

GUYSUCO’S COUNTER GuySuCo, in an earlier statement, presented a different version of the incident.

“The type of behaviour that was displayed by Mr. Stephens is recognised by the Corporation as one that constitutes gross misconduct, and such behaviour is treated with summary dismissal. As a consequence, Stephens was summarily dismissed,” GuySuCo said, adding: “…the Corporation wishes to restate, as it did in a previous statement, that the Estate Manager, in his usual night visits to the factory and mill dock, met a group of workers that included Mr. Stephens who were malingering in the vicinity of the

mill dock, and cautioned them to report to their respective work stations.

“On being cautioned by the Manager, Mr. Stephens became abusive, and was calmly advised by the Man-

ager to heed his advice and report to his work station.

Mr. Stephens subsequently retaliated and approached the Estate Manager in a hostile manner, and in the process struck the Manager

in his face. The incident was witnessed by the Agriculture Manager and a Supernumerary Constable, all of whom testified that the Estate Manager was not intoxicated, nor was he ag-

gressive and abusive to Mr. Stephens.”

The decision, all arguments considered, will be handed down during an open forum at GAWU’s Kingston office.

Brathwaite, Samuels lead Windies revival PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (CMC) – Kraigg Brathwaite and Marlon Samuels stroked enterprising unbeaten half-centuries to rescue West Indies and lift them to a comfortable position on the third day of the second Test against South Africa here yesterday.

Floundering at 55 for two after losing two quick wickets just before tea, West Indies were revived

by Brathwaite’s top score of 65 and Samuels’ 60, to reach 147 for two when bad light ended play at 17:45hrs at St George’s Park.

The two have so far added 92 for the third wicket - a partnership that proved critical after opener Devon Smith (22) and Leon Johnson fell in successive deliveries to seamer Morne Morkel, in the third over before the tea interval.

However, Brathwaite remained steady, carving out his seventh Test halfcentury in his 16th match, facing 125 balls and striking eight boundaries.

Samuels, meanwhile, took the attack to the South African bowlers, hitting nine fours in an innings that has required just 92 deliveries.

Their combined

efforts left West Indies 270 runs behind on first innings, after South Africa declared on 417 for eight about half-hour after lunch, following a cameo half-century from Dale Steyn that hurt West Indies momentum.

Resuming at 289 for three, South Africa lost four wickets in the morning session to be 369 for seven at lunch, as West Indies struck telling blows to limit the hosts.

Captain Hashim Amla, starting the day on 23, looked ominous when he hammered two boundaries on either side of the wicket in the first over of the day from pacer Jerome Taylor before he departed in the fourth over, lbw to fast bowler Jason Holder to one that nipped back and caught him in front.

Steyn tore into Taylor, smashing the seamer for two sixes and a four in his 29th over which went for 16 and also took a turn in left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn, exacting another 16 runs before holing out to Holder in the deep off the last ball, to trigger the declaration about half-hour before tea.

Brathwaite opened his account with a push to the cover boundary off Philander in the second over before taking two successive boundaries off the same bowler’s fifth over – the first a delightful straight drive and the second a cover drive off the back foot.

Smith got in on the act, twice producing flowing cover drives off Morkel, as West Indies cantered along merrily.

Kohli criticises Australia sledging (BBC SPORT) - India batsman Virat Kohli says Australia’s players called him a “spoilt brat” and that he had “no reason to respect” Mitchell Johnson.

Kohli scored 169 on the third day of the third Test during which he and Johnson exchanged plenty of verbals.

“They were calling me a spoilt brat. I said, ‘maybe that’s the way I am - you guys hate me, and I like that’. It worked in my favour I guess,” he said.

Kohli has hit three centuries but India are 2-0 down in the four-match series.

“It was going on throughout the day,” Kohli added.

“I like playing against Australia because it is very hard for them to stay calm. I don’t mind an argument on the field. It really excites me and brings the best out of me so they don’t seem to be learning the lesson.”

At one point during the third day, Johnson hit Kohli with the ball when throwing it at the stumps off his own bowling.

“I was really annoyed with him hitting me with the ball. I told him that’s not on and to ‘try and hit the stumps next time, not my body’,” Kohli said. “You have got to send the right message

across. I am not there to take some unnecessary words or chat from someone.”

Kohli, who put on 262 with Ajinkya Rahane, hit Johnson for three successive fours in one over as he helped India to 462-8 in reply to Australia’s first innings 530.

Johnson did take Kohli’s wicket with the final ball of the day but ended up with figures of 1-133 from 29.2 overs.

“I respect quite a few of them. But someone who does not respect me, I’ve got no reason to respect him,” Kohli said.

“I’ve got a nice sort of friendship with a few of them but someone who is not backing off and is saying anything that comes to mouth - I’ve got no reason to respect him.”

Australia bowler Ryan Harris hopes Kohli’s attitude has a detrimental impact on the India player’s batting.

“We try not to say too much to him, but sometimes he brings it on himself I guess when he starts it,” Harris said. “It’s never personal; it’s always a bit of fun. with a streaky boundary through gully off Steyn, Samuels quickly took command, using his feet against Tahir to gather boundaries in successive overs, clearing mid-off in the bowler’s sixth over before lofting him to the mid-wicket boundary.

He moved into the 30s with an off-driven boundary off Tahir and a few overs later, dissected square cover with precision for his sixth four with the same bowler, to ease into the 40s.

When Steyn returned for a final spell late in the day, he greeted the ace bowler with a scintillating cover drive for four and reached his 21st Test halfcentury in the next over from Tahir with a single to point.

West Indies nearly squandered their advantage, however, when Brathwaite drove a return catch to Tahir on 64, but the bowler failed to hold on to a difficult chance.

Cleveland Cavaliers centre Anderson Varejao underwent successful surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland to repair his ruptured left Achilles tendon, the team announced.

Varejao will miss the remainder of the 2014-15 season, although the team did not establish a timetable for his possible return.

The Orlando Magic sent guard Devyn Marble to Erie of the NBA Development League.

MELBOURNE, Australia (Reuters) - India batsmen Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane struck inspired centuries during a record fourth-wicket partnership at the Melbourne Cricket Ground yesterday to help India claw their way back into the third Test against Australia on day three.

The pair united at 1473 in the morning and were finally separated at 409-4 after tea, having creamed 262 runs off Australia’s hapless bowlers before spinner Nathan Lyon had Rahane trapped lbw for 147.

Kohli pushed on to 169 before he was caught behind, his third century of the series driving India to 462-8 at stumps, only 68 runs behind Australia’s mammoth first-innings 530.

Mohammed Shami was left on nine not out and though India will almost cer-

tainly concede a first-innings deficit, Kohli and Rahane’s gallant stand was another defiant response from a team who fought hard all series only to trail 2-0.

Pakistan’s Ajmal pulls out of World Cup squad KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters) Suspended Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has withdrawn from the World Cup squad because he has no chance of getting his action cleared before the tournament.

Pakistan Cricket Board officials met yesterday and decided that all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, who is also suspended from bowling in international cricket, will travel to Chennai, India for a test.

“If Hafeez clears the informal test then we will apply to the International Cricket Council to hold his official test for his bowling action to be cleared,” the PCB said in a statement.

The 37-year-old Ajmal, who was named in the preliminary squad, will continue remedial work on his action and play domestic cricket until he has satisfied himself he can take the ICC test.

“Ajmal withdrew himself,” PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan told reporters.

“We didn’t want to take a risk with Ajmal’s career because latest reports suggested his elbow extension was not still within the 15 degrees allowed by the ICC despite all the remedial work on his action.

“We were aware that if he took the official ICC test in a bid to make the World Cup squad and failed it he could be suspended from playing for one to two years and that would mean the end of his career,” Khan said.

2014 was a phenomenal year for Rugby – Henry

By Rawle Toney NATIONAL coach Theodore Henry summed up Guyana’s year in Rugby with one word phenomenal!

One might want to argue that Henry, one of the faces of the sport in the Caribbean, is being a little overzealous about his team’s accomplishments but take a few minutes to reflect on the Green Machine’s achievements and the dreadlocked player/coach’s sentiments will certainly be echoed.

Phenomenal indeed was the team’s showing internationally as Guyana won both the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) 15s and 7s championships, becoming only the second team from the region to achieve such feats, following in the footsteps of Trinidad and Tobago who did so almost 13 years ago.

“Winning the 15s was big because we always wanted to win that tournament and what made it special is how we did it, where it happened and whom we defeated,” Henry said in an exclusive interview with Chronicle Sport yesterday.

A trip to Canada in July is also on the table for the Caribbean’s top 7s side to compete in the 2015 Pan American Games.

Manchester City surrender two-goal lead in Burnley draw

By Martyn Thomas MANCHESTER CITY missed the chance to close the gap on Chelsea at the top of the Premier League as Burnley came from two goals down to claim a point at the Etihad.

The champions appeared to be cruising at halftime as Fernandinho added a screamer to David Silva’s well-worked opener.

However, Burnley came out for the second half with a belief they seldom showed in the first 45 minutes and pulled one back

within two minutes of the restart as George Boyd poked home from an offside position.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini will not be happy when he sees the replays of the goal, and his side were knocked off their stride as the visitors began to take the game to them.

And, while City created chances to kill the game off, it was no surprise when Burnley got their equaliser. The hosts failed to clear a Kieran Trippier free kick and after the ball bounced off Boyd, Ashley Barnes lashed it into the far top corner.

Pellegrini sent on Scott Sinclair late on but the visitors were able to see out the game and claim a vital point that takes them level on points with Hull and Crystal Palace above them.

Chelsea were frustrated by a determined Southampton as the two sides drew 1-1 at St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton were the more impressive of the two sides, bolstered by an easing of their recent injury crisis. Victor Wanyama and Morgan Scheiderlin dominated the midfield, with Sadio Mane stretching play ahead of them.

It was Mane who scored first, running onto Dusan Tadic’s pass and finishing confidently past Thibaut Courtois. Chelsea struggled for rhythm, and it took a moment of excellence from Eden Hazard, who cut in from the right, beat three defenders and finish with a strike into the far corner, to bring them level.

In the second half, Chelsea built on the ending of the first half, and pinned Southampton back into their own half for much of the second period. Despite that, Chelsea created little opening, and Hazard came closest for Chelsea when he dragged a shot just wide of goal.

With 15 minutes of normal time remaining, Didier Drogba was introduced, then Loic Remy. Morgan Schneiderlin received a second yellow for a foul on Cesc Fabregas, but there wasn’t enough time for Chelsea to build on the advantage.

Jose Mourinho’s side now risk being drawn into a title race, although Manchester City’s meltdown at home to Burnley means Chelsea reach the halfway point of the Premier League season with a three-point cushion.

T&T upbeat over Super 50 campaign despite four-day blues P O R T- O F - S PA I N , Trinidad (CMC) – Captain Rayad Emrit is hoping that with an enhanced side for the Super50, Trinidad and Tobago can win the competition and lift the gloom surrounding their start to the four-day season.

Trinidad and Tobago Red Force languish one from bottom in the six-team standings on 24 points, after a terrible start to the revamped WICB Professional Cricket League.

However, with champion off-spinner Sunil Narine, seamers Ravi Rampaul, Shannon Gabriel and Kevin Cooper, along with legspinner Samuel Badree, expected to be available for the Super50 campaign, Emrit is hoping for a turnaround in Red Steel’s fortunes.

“The guys are preparing well and there are a lot of senior guys back in the team preparing for this tournament and if they are available obviously they will be into the team,” Emrit told the Trinidad Express newspaper.

“The likes of Cooper, Narine, Rampaul, Shannon should be back and Badree is in the squad as well.

Hopefully these guys will be fit and they can bring some

of their experience to the team.”

He added: “There will always be fingers pointing

with rain helping them stave off defeat in the opening round and then easily beat tournament doormat

“In the four-day tournament, we did not have the results we wanted in the four games we had so far, but the Super50 is different and we are focused on that now,” Emrit pointed out.

“It is a limited overs competition and it is the

shorter format that the Trinidad and Tobago team seems more comfortable with.”

T&T reached the final of the Super50 tournament earlier this year, after finishing second in Group B. However, they went down to Barbados by 17 runs in the championship game, despite being labelled favourites.

Emrit identified inconsistent batting as the root of T&T’s problem and said this needed to be improved for the upcoming campaign.

“We had probably our best team in the Regional Super50 this year and we fell short because of our batting again. We keep saying the same thing over and over but hopefully we can get the batting right this time,” said the all-rounder.

“Our batters need to put runs on the board in the competition. We come to trials and we score a lot of runs because we are accustomed to the bowlers but we need to go out there on the regional scene and put runs on the board.”

The Super50 runs from January 15 to 25 in Trinidad and the sister island of Tobago.

Beharry defeats Seubarran for BCB presidency … Haniff lone executive retained

By Calvin Roberts AFTER several minutes of back and forth rumblings that usually take place in any Annual General Meeting (AGM) for sports in Guyana, along with Returning Officer Colin Bynoe throwing a motion for the floor to act on following an unwanted controversy as to who should represent the Berbice River Association, Anil Beharry was elected the new president of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB).

The BCB hosted its elections of office-bearers at its 7-7 Cheddi Jagan Streetbased New Amsterdam office yesterday midday, following the AGM where the Reports from the President, Treasurer, Secretary, Special Events Committee and Competitions Committee were read and passed by the stakeholders of the game in the Ancient County.

However, controversy in who should represent the Berbice River Association, when the list of delegates was being called by the BCB secretary Angela Haniff, occurred since four individuals, who claimed to be the legitimate representative, turned up to exercise their franchise.

At the same time, another letter which was submitted by Michael Franco on behalf of the said Association was later read

by Bynoe, who, after several back and forth rumblings opened the floor for suggestion on the matter, following which the delegates all agreed to give two parties from both factions voting privileges as it was not their intention to disenfranchise anyone present.

Beharry was nominated for the stewardship position by his clubmate and former vicepresident Hubern Evans, while his opponent Vicram Seubarran was nominated by former Competitions Committee chairman Carl Moore, but when the dust settled, Beharry came out the victor 22-16.

Haniff, who has served the BCB in the capacity of secretary for the past eight years, will do so for another two, as she was re-elected unopposed, even as Plafianna Millington, Vicky Bharosay and Richardo Baichan were elected unopposed to the positions of assistant secretary, treasurer and assistant treasurer respectively.

“I am very grateful for your support. I have been around cricket for many, many years and I know that I am capable to take the cricket to another level.

“I hand-picked my team and based on your judgment here today, I think I have picked a fairly good team, with the support being overwhelming.

I take this opportunity to say thanks to those who supported me and even those who did not, as I wish for us to work together for the development of cricket in Berbice,” said Beharry.
