lovers, heartbreakers, and people genuinely fed up by life, This is my first month as the Gutter editor in chief and I have to admit that I am terrified of living up to this role. I tend to be a very practical, perfection driven person and in the past month gutter has already helped me grow out of the confines of my (often) rigid brain. Whether it be responding to instagram DMs from the most creative, rad people at midnight, chatting with our awesome layout editor Bailey during class or just vibing over the fantastic submissions in our inbox- Gutter has already brought so much love and energy into my life.

For me, February has always felt like a month of change and this month I’ve felt it more than ever. So many of us have come back to a campus so full of negativity and sadness and far more of us are stranded at home, burnt out and lacking the community we all love so much. One thing is for certain - we all feel so stuck. But I don’t believe we have to stay in this place of feeling stuck. We have so much autonomy over our lives, over the art we make, the thoughts we have and the people we share ourselves with.

There is so much good in this chaotic world we’re currently stuck in and I see love and kindness and joy in so many places. In the print lab in the VA and kitchens cooking grilled cheese late at 4 AM, in queer realtionships and taking walks late at night on the loop with your music blasting outloud from your back pocket. I see love in Gutter. We have good vibes y’all, don’t lose them.

Thank you to everyone who submitted this month, you are strong and creative and amazing and we love you. Seriously you’re what makes gutter run. And a big thank you to Bailey who surface level knows photoshop far better than me, and far deeper let me into a little bit of their Purchase magic.

Have a great month, do your homework and make sure to drink a (vegan?) milkshake for me!

A Love Letter I, a milky eyed monster, a long-limbed beast, With warped face staring stupidly through your window, gawking while you sleep, love you more than your pea brain can even comprehend.

I examine your intestines your digestion A lump of coal that I can poke Through a soft white belly Cradling you between my fingers is futile because you prefer the floor over me I am the hand that feeds Wipping flecks like seeds from your greedy mouth nothing more.

Crickets feasting on an apple core which will soon grace your throat, like my fingers often do.

T

here’s something dangerously special about my partner. Very few people get to experience a love like this.

I prepare at night to get ready to see them, it’s my highlight of the 24 hours we get. Yes it really is!

The problem is when it’s time to meet for our daily chat I feel very burnt out from my long day.

But it’s okay because once we see each other my problems without a doubt always seem to disappear as they look at me with glistening eyes & a warming smile that melts away all my worries.

What’s not ok is when they have to leave, things always end up kind of awkward and bitter.

The longer we spend time together the feeling of emptiness shadows over me.

Until we meet again the next day, everything is tranquil & the cycle repeats.
