Department of Global Health

Greetings from the Hilltop!
In 2023, the Department of Global Health embarked on a new chapter following its rebranding within the recently established School of Health. This year marks the graduation of 35 bachelor’s degree recipients, each armed with a deep comprehension of global health challenges and a dedication to effecting positive change in our world.
Numerous of our students were honored with awards and accolades for their exceptional commitment and contributions to diverse facets of global health and service. Additionally, we reconnected with many of our alumni, spotlighting a selection of their remarkable journeys in pursuing their passion for global health.
As life gradually returns to normalcy postCOVID-19 this year, we’ve reignited our global footprints. Our experiential learning program has been revitalized with new offerings and locations, preparing our students for immersive study experiences with nine partner organizations across Africa, Central America, Asia, and the Pacific. This expansion is a testament to our commitment to global health and our students' readiness to make a difference. Notably, we expanded our reach by adding two new sites: Nagasaki University in Japan and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium in Anchorage, Alaska.
Our faculty spearheaded key initiatives in 2023, including establishing a joint Center for Global Health Policy and Politics and two “Big Idea” projects focusing on Health Economics, Finance, Outcomes, and Global Mental Health.
A couple of highlights on events include Professor Wu hosting the Big Questions in Forced Displacement and Health event at the Hilltop and Dr. Turbat presenting a teamwork paper at the World Health Organization conference.
Together, we published over 40 articles and received 25 grants from various organizations. The publication record showed that our research covered diverse topics, from AI in China’s development overseas to neglected tropical disease prevention, from commentaries on intellectual property during COVID-19 to exploring climaterelated depression. These efforts have not only solidified our impact on global health but also inspired hope for a better, healthier world.
Amidst the complex landscape of 2023, characterized by ongoing conflicts and technological advancements, our unwavering determination is more evident than ever. We are steadfast in our commitment to navigate these challenges with optimism and ambition, confident in our ability to adapt and thrive.
Through innovative research, education, and advocacy, we aspire not only to mitigate the impact of these challenges but also contribute to positive change on a global scale, instilling confidence in our stakeholders.
As we look ahead, we are driven by a shared vision of a healthier and more equitable world. With determination and dedication, we stand ready to embrace the opportunities and overcome the obstacles that lie ahead, confident in our ability to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives globally.
Warm regards.

2023 was an exciting year for our Global Health Practice and Research: An Experiential Learning program.
In the Spring we developed and conducted a new, day-long, pre-departure training with innovative co-facilitation by Wendy Jones, M.Ed., M.S.W. at the Georgetown University National Center for Cultural Competence.
In August, we convened virtually with our preceptors and discussed how to strengthen the program. There was also a lot of enthusiasm expressed and ideas shared around interinstitutional research collaboration and on the dissemination of work produced by the students. We hope to gather in person in 2024.
Last fall, a total of eighteen students were placed with nine partner organizations, and they presented their excellent work to faculty, staff, students, family, preceptors and other collaborators from the host organizations at Georgetown in January. Topics included explorations of infectious disease, homelessness, health workforce strengthening, ageing, reproductive health, and maternal and child health.
We also keep growing our placement offerings and welcoming new partnerships. This year we had students attend for the first time a placement in Nagasaki University, Japan and another at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium in Anchorage, Alaska. Each location provided wonderful learning opportunities spanning environmental exposure and cardiac health, harm reduction approaches in native populations, compliance with a national health checkup program designed for older adults, and sociocultural determinants of fertility rate decline
Alyssa Kardos Loera (NHS ‘21) became an Annual Awardee through Georgetown’s Social Innovation and Public Service Fund (SIPS). Her project, Re-Made in Cambodia (ReMade), is a sustainable fashion initiative that transforms recovered textile waste into wearable products – a twofold strategy to support young local designers and raise environmental awareness about the impacts of the fashion industry.
Nadia Saif (NHS ‘14) completed an MD/MPH at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In July 2023, she became an officer in the CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program, as well as an officer in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. For the two-year fellowship, she is stationed at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Morgantown, West Virginia, where she is focusing on research and surveillance of occupational injuries.
Nicole Mansour (NHS ‘18) began an MBA at the University of Chicago in fall 2023 in the Booth School of Business, focusing on the intersection healthcare and innovation. She will publish her scholarly paper soon from her senior year experiential learning course at the National Institute of Nutrition in Hyderabad, India.
Henrike "Kiki" Schmalfuss (NHS ‘22) is pursuing an MD at Harvard Medical School and was a 2023 Samvid Scholar Recipients are selected as future leaders with exceptional potential and commitment to drive societal change. The venture provides leadership development, community networking and graduate education financial support.
Nick Dellasanta (NHS ‘16) completed his MSc in the Control of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He has collaborated with the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa and other key stakeholders on malaria control in Sub-Saharan Africa to strengthen data use for decision making. He also worked as an epidemiologist for a health technology company to facilitate phone-based triage tools. Most recently, he has worked within the Strategic Transformation division of a consulting firm in the UK supporting government and National Health Service clients within the firm’s public sector health portfolio.
Michaela Hitchner (NHS ‘19) recently applied to plastic surgery residency programs and will be graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a dual MD/MPH degree in spring 2024.

The Initiative for Health Economics, Financing and Outcomes (IHEFO) was selected from the School of Health’s 2023 Big Idea Initiative that sought unconventional, interdisciplinary approaches to advance knowledge or test potential solutions to complex problems. Dr. Vincent Turbat and Dr. Wu Zeng co-lead this faculty-initiated research hub on pertinent and emerging healthcare systems’ issues in aim of domestic and global health financing improvements.
The Center for Global Health Policy & Politics launched in 2023 and is led by Dr. Matthew Kavanagh. This crosscampus collaboration between the Georgetown University School of Health and the O’Neill Institute intersects global health, law, and political science.
The Global Mental Health & Well-being Initiative is also a “Big Idea Initiative” selection with Dr. Shabab Wahid serving on the founding Advisory Board. This interdisciplinary coalition of faculty, staff and students at Georgetown University conducts research, develops pedagogy, and engages in informed activism and advocacy to improve mental wellbeing and psychosocial outcomes locally, nationally, and globally.
Professors Vincent Turbat and Wu Zeng attended the workshop on “Making hospitals fit-for-purpose for people, health systems and sustainable development”, organized by WHO from October 31st to November 2nd, 2023. They presented the final report entitled "What Affects the Performance of Hospital Financing Interventions in Low and Lower Middle-Income Countries from the Program Implementation Perspective. A Systematic Review" from Wu Zeng, Mara Boiangiu, Natalie Trachsel, Eva Jarawan, Vincent Turbat and Bruno Meessen. The report was well received. They participated in several commissions and networked extensively, most notably with PAHO, EMRO, and Oxford IHTM.
On April 27, 2023, The Department of Global Health at Georgetown University, in collaboration with the World Bank and Columbia University, hosted an event to disseminate research findings for the project of “Big Questions in Forced Displacement and Health”. The project was implemented by a consortium of Universities, including Columbia University, Georgetown University, Brandeis University, American University of Beirut, and University of Los Andes to examine health system and health financing for displaced populations in Jordan, Colombia, Bangladesh, and the Republic of Congo. The event has more than 20 participants from various organizations. The research findings are available at https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/researc h/programs/program-forced-migrationhealth/research/big-questions-forceddisplacement-health
