Turn driving-test stress into a clear plan The goal is safe, independent driving—not memorising a route.
THE PROBLEM
THE METHOD
THE OUTCOME
Nerves, missed observations, uncertain gaps, inconsistent speed or parking.
Identify the exact issue, practise one skill at a time, then repeat in realistic conditions.
Better decisions, smoother control and more confidence on unfamiliar roads.

Scenario 1: Unsure at an intersection Problem: traffic is moving and you are not confident the gap is safe.
COMMON MISTAKE
PROBLEM-SOLVING STEPS
SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Rushing because another driver is waiting, or looking only in one direction.
1. Reduce speed appropriately. 2. Observe all relevant directions. 3. Check signs, signals and right of way. 4. Wait for a safe, legal gap.
A decision made calmly, with clear observation and no pressure to take an unsafe gap.
Practice drill With an instructor, repeat different intersection approaches. After each one, explain what you saw, what risk you considered and why you chose to proceed or wait.

Scenario 2: Lane changes and merging Problem: you need to move across, but traffic is close or the gap is changing.

PLAN EARLY
CHECK & SIGNAL
MOVE ONLY WHEN SAFE
Check signs and road markings. Decide whether a lane change is actually needed.
Use mirrors, check the blind spot as appropriate, signal in good time and reassess traffic.
Choose a suitable gap, steer smoothly and cancel the signal when finished.
IF THE GAP DISAPPEARS Do not force the manoeuvre. Maintain safe control, continue only if legal and safe, and reassess.

Scenario 3: Speed, observation and parking Use a repeatable routine instead of relying on memory under pressure.
SPEED MANAGEMENT
OBSERVATION
Read the posted limit and adjust to conditions. Watch for changing zones, hazards and road layout.
Keep scanning far ahead and nearby. Check mirrors regularly and before actions; watch vulnerable road users.
LOW-SPEED MANOEUVRES
Go slowly enough to stay in control. Observe all around, make small corrections and stop if you need to reassess.
Practice method: one focus per drive
• Drive 1: focus on speed choice and recognising signs. • Drive 2: focus on mirror routines and blind-spot checks. • Drive 3: focus on parking setup, observation and controlled corrections.

Scenario 4: Test-day nerves or a small mistake Problem: anxiety makes you rush—or one error distracts you from the next decision.
BEFORE THE TEST
DURING THE TEST
Arrive with time to spare. Bring required documents, avoid last-minute cramming and use calm, steady breathing.
Listen carefully, ask for clarification if an instruction is unclear, and focus on the current road situation.
IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE
AFTER A MOCK TEST
Do not assume you have failed. Keep driving safely, follow the rules and make the next decision correctly.
Review specific feedback. Choose one or two weaknesses and practise them before repeating the full mock test.
Remember: safe recovery and sound judgement matter more than panic.

WHAT TO DO
Day 1
Baseline drive
Ask instructor to identify 2–3 priority skills.
Day 2
Observation & speed
Practise scanning, mirrors and appropriate speed.
Day 3
Intersections
Work on right of way, turns and safe gap selection.
Day 4
Lane changes
Practise planning, observation, signalling and merging.
Day 5
Parking & control
Repeat low-speed manoeuvres with all-round observation.
Day 6
Mock test
Simulate test conditions; record feedback without judgement.
Day 7
Targeted review
Practise priority weaknesses; confirm readiness with instructor.
Only take the test when you can drive safely and independently. Confirm current requirements with VicRoads. GURU DRIVING TRAINING | LICENCE TEST PREPARATION
