Form Technique 1
Scale Jeff Koons designed this balloon rabbit by enlarging the size of the rabbit. It is an impressive artwork, so I tested the scale technique by using text “A” and in filled this by cube modules. Scale technique can convey the idea to the people, even they stand far away from the building.

Form Technique 2
This form consists of both solid and semi-transparent part. Solid part is the positive space and the gap between the solid part is negative space, semi-transparent part’s form is same as solid part’s negative space. This technique made this form interesting by visualizing the invisible part.

Form Technique 3
Collage Traditionally collage is combining different materials/elements together in one artwork. The way that I show this technique here is combing several architectural elements altogether, these are arch, wall, columns and grids. Firstly, I arranged these in an ordinary way; but collage technique also blends and mixes, I arranged all the elements randomly at the second time to make it more like a collage.
8
Form Technique 4
Graphics ARM architect applied Graphics technique in facade of Melbourne Recital Centre with two layers of cubes. This technique made this building more impressive. I tested this technique by cube module, each module is generated by one continuous line. The pink highlights one of modules.

9
Form Technique 5
Quotation I used Felix Candela’s Los Manan tials restaurant as the reference image to build this form, because quotation technique is learning from someone’s and then use in my own form. I like this form because it is flexible and continuous.
10
Form Technique 6
Folding Zaha connected columns and ceiling by folding technique to approach the fluid form inside the airport. I used this technique to create a folded space that could be a corridor.
11
Form Technique 7
Blurring I chose blurring technique this time because this one can help me generate the form, which could be supplied for promenade. LACMA urban light used this technique by arranging series of lamps with several height. I want to light up the promenade at night and blur the form in another way that will provide a lane for passengers to go through the form.

12
Form Technique 8
Jump Cut From Rosalie Gascoigne’s artwork, the definition of jump cut technique is cutting the form into several pieces and then arranging them randomly. This technique made the outcome irregular and interesting.
Image reference: http://justinmillerart.com/artist/rosalie-gascoigne/
13
Form Technique 9
Anamorphic From my research, anamorphic means that the artwork/form can only convey the idea when the visitor view at one specific point. I built up this form and it become a hexagon from this perspective.
14
Form Technique 10
Detail It is another technique that I tend to apply in promenade’s walkway. The size of patterns become smaller from edge to centre.
15
Form Technique 11
Distortion Distortion could connected two programs gradually with the fluent, smooth bridge. I think this technique could eliminate the boundary between two programs.

16
Form Technique 12
Fragmentation I made this facade by the fragmentation technique. This facade panel consists of series of trusses and the size of trusses become smaller from bottom to top. Under the natural light, interior space will have the nice shadow.
17
Form Technique 13
Illusion Illusion could make visitors feel dizzy. So I tested illusion technique by making this corridor.

Transparency & Repetition Inspired from Dodi Moss’s steel mesh sculpture, I did one form below, which consists several aches. Because black background could not show transparent form clearly, I changed it to a gradient background.

Precedent
River Building, Sanaa This fluid form eliminated the boundary between the building and landscape by using thin columns and glass wall. Start from this point with the site analysis, I am going to design a contemporary art gallery with programs of art education, conservation and exhibition by applying some techniques, which has been introduced from last week. My proposals will use these techniques to eliminate the boundary between different programs so that visitors could view the exhibition fluidly.
25
I started with the collage technique because it looks potential from form iteration task. I combined meshes and arches together.
Mass 1 26
I approached fluidity by using continuous slopping floor, and the first floor’s slope could connect to the promenade’s circulation. Also, I keep using transparency and repetition technique for the north building. The staircase inside arches connects to the promenade as well.

Arc iterations in 2D Inspired from existing NGV's semicircular entry, I started to explore the various iterations of arches by investigating Sol Le Witt's wall drawings. He systematically combined basic geometry in different ways, and observed that "each person draws a line differently and each person understands words differently". I agreed with that, so I applied distinct combinations of curves, arcs to reflect that visitors could have different comprehensions from one artwork. Referred to "Modern Art in Detail 75 masterpieces", art is a flexible, changeable evolution that expands in different directions often at the same time, rather than a linear development. The arrangement of the interior space will provide choices for visitors; firstly, south building includes two entries, which could invite groups of people from Southbank blvd and Kavanagh street; secondly, continuous ramps get through both of south building and promenade; thirdly, temperary artworks will be placed at ramps to supply a better immersive experience for the visitors. Most educational, research programs are located at south building since building’s location is closed to the Melbourne Uni’s southbank campus that having fine art major. Both temperary and permanent contenperary gallery are arranged inside north building with flexible circulation. North building faced to Flinders Street Train Station, this area should be more celebrated compared with south building.

Week 7 - Mid Scheme 1 Design Statement
Arch iterations in 2D Originally, scheme 1 intends to eliminate the boundary between the urban environment and the art space, and design a gallery become more acceptable for the public, especially the group of people, who are not familiar with the art. The existing NGV's architect relocated the water wall at the entry to NGV; and designed a direct connection of interior and exterior by ground's semicircular arch. (Paul, 2004) Inspired from existing NGV's semicircular entry, I started to explore the various iterations of arches by investigating Sol Le Witt's wall drawings. He systematically combined basic geometry in different ways, and observed that "each person draws a line differently and each person understands words differently". (Sebastian, 2013) Similarly, each person would understand the artwork differently. Therefore, I applied distinct combinations of curves, arcs to reflect that visitors could have different comprehensions from one artwork. Referred to "Modern Art in Detail - 75 masterpieces" (Susie, 2017), art is a flexible, changeable evolution that expands in different directions often at the same time, rather than a linear development. The arrangement of the interior space will provide choices for visitors; firstly, south building includes two entries, which could invite groups of people from Southbank blvd and Kavanagh street; secondly, continuous ramps get through both of south building and promenade; thirdly, temperary artworks will be placed at staircases and ramps to provide a better immersive experience for the visitors.

Refer to the mid crit, scheme one’s interior plan did not really reflect the idea of arcs. I tried to make the space more fluid and continuous by using different types of staircase and slopes when I was designing scheme 1. As a result, the gallery space and the interior space in southbank building is not very relative to the facade pattern. However, I resolved the gallery space before circulation in north building, and north building’s plan shows the hierarchy between the spaces.

Scheme 2 Design Statement This scheme will keep exploring how to eliminate the boundary between the gallery space/artwork and visitors by studying from both artist and architect. Regarding to Zaha (Archdaily, 2010), the museum is not an object container, but rather a campus for art. She designed the fluidity and flexibility of space in Maxxi Museum for all types of moving and temperary exhibition with overlapping, connected flows and pathways. In my design, I will use continuous corridor to embrace both of buildings and promenade to encourage visitors to walk into the exhibition area. Also, inspired from Aiweiwei's artwork "Forever Bicycle"(Dewi, 2015), he created a colossal labyrinth and visually blurring space by stacking groups of everyday products - bicycle. In his work, the bicycle has been used as a main moldule and one bike symbolised the freedom to move. Consequently, his concept become stronger and the sculpture become attractive by combining hundreds of bicycles. I will design a space that infilled with groups of modules. Nowadays, more temperary exhibitions occurred in gallery (Susie, 2017), the form of modules can be adjusted for the temperary exhibition because they are convenient to assemblage and reconstruct.

- Need to balance the relation between arc and straight lines. Because Sol Le Witt’s wall painting did the iteration of arcs and straight lines as well. - Also, some columns could be hidden inside the wall. Square columns do not suitable for my design.

I choose metal canopy for my roof system since it could be constructed in any shape; and double layer could generate nice shadow for interior space.
