Armsan Steel Plate Challenge Head to the top of the Clayline and you’ll find the Armsan Steel Plate Challenge, hosted by the National Target Shooting Association. Under the watchful eye of a range official, participants will be required to knock down plates with birdshot ammunition

This iconic, fully mobile, selfcontained clay shooting unit is sure to be one of the biggest attractions at the Northern Shooting Show.

Standing 40ft high and 80ft wide, all that Star Shot requires of those who face it is to successfully shoot at a clay target within each of its designated squares with a single cartridge. The targets get faster the higher up the numbers you go, but get them all, along with a final simultaneous pair, and you could be crowned the winner! It’s high-speed, high adrenaline shooting, but it’s also tons of fun, bordering on addictive, sure to be something visitors return to again and again. The Northern Shooting Show will host the last National Qualifier ahead of the Star Shot National Final, set to be held at a date and venue yet to be confirmed.

Cutlers corner Why not make a point of meeting some of the UK’s best knifemakers who will be demonstrating their skills and displaying a range of handmade creations across the weekend.

MILITARY For Queen & Country

Immerse yourself in the art of axe and tomahawk throwing, guided by experts who’ll show you the way on a fourmetre range. All abilities and anyone over the age of six are welcome.

Greenheart Bushcraft Venture inside Greenheart’s canvas tent complete with a pole lathe, shave horses and more for demonstrations and hands-on experience of traditional woodwork tools.

Come and meet the furry team led by rabbiting aficionado Simon Whitehead of Pakefield Ferrets and friends. Simon will be showcasing the art of rabbiting at his stand, and also hosting twice daily ferreting demonstrations at 11am and 1pm in the arena close by.

Learn all there is to know about the work of the Queen’s Own Yeomanry and other units in the Army Reserve at this interactive stand where everything from weapons and clothing to an Armoured Fighting Vehicle will be on display.

Sophie Bagley Owner of Glorious Game Sophie firmly believes that presenting game as familiar dishes makes it more tempting for a wider audience, far beyond those who have grown up in the countryside eating it regularly. Her company Glorious Game’s unique range includes award winning products, such as Yorkshire Fried Pheasant, which was awarded second place in the Best Added Value or Innovation Category in the Eat Game Awards 2021.

Jack Holden Head Butcher, Fodder Jack has been a butcher for 10 years, working under his father for a time to build up his knowledge of the trade. His favourite product is rib-eye steak (which has to be medium rare), flavoured with plenty of salt and pepper. Jack is now head butcher at Fodder, the farm shop and cafe based at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

Greg Lewis Development Chef, Sykes House Farm Greg Lewis has served food to everyone from Olympic athletes at Sydney 2000 to patrons in Harrogate, London and Leeds, where he worked under Jeff Baker at the Michelinstarred Pool Court. Greg took on his current role at Sykes House Farm earlier this year, one which will see him help local chefs to develop their menus and make food preparation more interactive and accessible to a wider audience.

Chris and Josh have worked in multiple award winning establishments between them and have ambitions to achieve a Michelin star and three rosettes at their restaurant, which lies just to the north of Knaresborough.

Chris is passionate about game and his ethos centres around sustainable produce and local suppliers and he grows all of the restaurant’s own fruit and vegetables.

Working with the Grimwith Estate, Lionel and Matt put game meat at the front and centre of their menus during the season, just one of the ways they support local suppliers throughout the year. The Clarendon Inn is renowned for sourcing its menus within three miles of its front door and its commitment was recognised at the 2021 Eat Game Awards when they achieved second place in the Best Restaurant/Pub category.

Ali Moran Landlord of The Blacksmith’s Arms After working as a chef at The Blacksmith’s Arms in Lastingham, near Pickering, for six years, Ali bought the business and became its landlord in 2021. The Blacksmith’s Arms prides itself on serving good, honest Yorkshire food and regularly hosts gourmet game nights during the shooting season. Ali will be joined over the weekend by his apprentice chef Archie Lealman.

Tristan Prudden Executive Chef, Aysgarth Falls Hotel, North Yorkshire A graduate of Tante Marie Cookery Academy in Woking, Tristan has gained extensive experience in professional kitchens across North Yorkshire.

Tristan has a particular interest and flair for game cookery and has spent time catering for private shoot parties on the Constable Burton Estate.

Esther Veerman The Country Cook Esther Veerman was taught to cook by her grandmother, who was a legend in the kitchens at a large estate. A passionate advocate for game and an expert in understanding flavours and textures, Esther was a finalist at The Game Chef of The Year 2015 and is the author of From Field & Moor: A Country Cook’s Sport.

Simon Whitehead In his roles as a writer and filmmaker, Simon has been extolling the virtues of field to fork and wild rabbit as a sustainable food source for a number of years. The author of the Ahead of the Game cookbook, Simon contributes to Shooting Times on a regular basis and has also made guest appearances on TV programmes such as Countrywise, Food Unwrapped and Great British Food Revival.

The son of a gamekeeper, Terry has carried on the family values of shooting and conservation throughout his life. He currently runs a small shoot in Essex where he enjoys deerstalking and game shooting.

Tania’s passion for shooting started in her early days in the form of pest control on her family arable farm and has further developed into a national events and membership community, more commonly known as The Country Girls UK.

Victoria Chesters BASC Press Victoria has been BASC’s social media officer since 2017.

Louisa Clutterbuck Head of Operations for British Game Assurance (BGA) Louisa is in charge of the day-to-day running of the business and also heads up Eat Wild, the consumer campaign promoting British feathered game to the public.

Gareth Dockerty BASC Head of Uplands Gareth is head of uplands at BASC. Having joined the organisation in 2016, Gareth’s role focuses on ensuring decision makers, stakeholders

and the public understand the benefits of shooting for upland habitats and rural communities.

Martin Edwards BASC Head of Deer Management Martin is a keen shot and avid deer stalker. Originally from Yorkshire, when he is not sitting on a high seat he enjoys bird watching.

Dr Al Gabriel BASC Council Member Dr Gabriel was elected as a BASC council member in 2020. He is an avid deer stalker based in the north of England with specialist interest in roe deer. An advocate for diversity in fieldsports, he is particularly focused on making deerstalking accessible to women.

James has a passion for the natural environment and has been shooting for most of his life.

A former firearms expert at the Forensic Science Service, a former forensic science instructor at the UK’s National Training Centre and former chief scientist at the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS), Martin joined BASC in 2021.

Dr Peter Marshall BASC Head of Training & Education Dr Marshall is responsible for setting the standards within shooting sports, training, coaching, education and introducing young people to shooting through BASC’s young shots programme.

Curtis Mossop BASC Head of Pathways to Shooting Starting out as a gamekeeper on a mixed sporting estate in Perthshire, Curtis later moved to Sparsholt to teach game and wildlife management courses before becoming a senior lecturer at Newton Rigg.

Meet your host Jonathan M. McGee Well known for his photography and videos, Jonathan runs a creative digital agency from his Leeds office.

Jonathan and his team offer marketing and media management to a host of incredible brands including numerous within the fieldsports sector.

THE NGO AT THE NSS The National Gamekeepers Organisation (NGO) is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, so why not join them on Gamekeepers’ Row to learn more about how they work with a whole host of stakeholders on the issues affecting their members and their sport? Moorland vegetation will be on the agenda, representatives from CIC will be on hand to examine deer heads while owls will be one of the main focus points for the NGO Educational Trust.

GUNDOGS Darren Kirk has been a gundog trainer for over 30 years and at this year’s Northern Shooting Show he and his team will hold demonstrations covering all aspects of their craft. As well as the events listed in the arena schedule below, Darren and his team will be holding clinics where handlers can seek advice about issues concerning their gundogs.

Alongside this there will be a timed gundog scurry for junior handlers (aged 18 and under) as well as working tests for more advanced handlers where prizes kindly donated by Snyeds Wonderdog and Mad About Pets can be won. There is even room for a “gundog long jump” where handlers can try out a very simple retrieve over a small jump against the clock.

Gamekeepers’ Welfare Trust In addition, we are delighted to have Sir Johnny Scott from the Gamekeepers’ Welfare Trust (GWT) joining us. BASC will also be hosting a number of local MPs over the two days.

A number of police forces will also be attending the event including North Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria.

Food glorious food BASC are supporting this year’s Hunters’ Kitchen (more details on p.12) and we have some amazing chefs from some of Yorkshire’s finest pubs and restaurants, all of whom will be cooking amazing game dishes.

There will be a full list of who is cooking and when over the two days.

Hard talk BASC has a number of experts taking part in the symposium discussions including the transition to sustainable ammunition and firearms plus much more, so please make sure you get involved and ask any questions you might have.

Lost Children

Baby Changing & Disabled Toilets

If you require any assistance or have any questions while you’re at the Northern Shooting Show, you will find the information desk at the foyer of Hall 1.

Lost children will always be taken to the Organisers Office by the foyer of Hall 1. If you find a lost child please tell a member of the Northern Shooting Show team immediately and report to the Organisers Office.

You will find all disabled toilets, which double as baby changing facilities, marked on the map found within the showground.

Dogs

Cash machines are located at the main entrance only.

Emergency Action In the unlikely event of a fire or other emergency, there may be the need to evacuate the site. Announcements will be made over the public address system and we ask everyone to assist by obeying the instructions of the police and fire stewards. The meeting point is in the exhibitors carpark.

Well behaved dogs are welcome on a fixed, non-retractable lead. Please clean up after your dog. Dogs are not allowed in Halls 1 or 2. They are allowed in all other halls, marquees and areas. Dog water bowls are located throughout the site.

Mobility Scooters | Disabled Car Park

A doctor and ambulance are on site while the event is open. Please head to the Organisers Office in the foyer of Hall 1 or contact a member of the Northern Shooting Show team.

Photography Official photographers will be operating around the event site, distinguished by official badges.

Lost Property Lost property will be located at the information desk in the foyer of Hall 1.

Conditions of Admission You must comply with the instructions and directions given by organiser and event staff and stewards and with all relevant laws, safety announcements and event regulations whilst attending the event.

The organiser reserves the right to refuse ticket holders admission to the event in reasonable circumstances including for health and safety, licensing reasons or where a ticket is void.

No refunds will be given to ticket holders who are refused entry or ejected due to their own behaviour.

The use of equipment for recording or transmitting any audio, visual or audio-visual material or any information or data inside the event is strictly forbidden. Unauthorised recordings, tapes, films or similar items may be confiscated and destroyed. The organiser will not be liable for any loss, theft or damage to confiscated items.

Ticket holders entering the event may be filmed, photographed and/or recorded for broadcast, event promotion or security purposes. The organiser may use such films and recordings without payment and without further notice.
