HOTEL OPERATOR OF THE YEAR On the occasion of the 21st edition of its hotel ratings for the category ‘Hotel opera­ tor of the year’, the Swiss business magazine Bilanz bestowed this award on Günter Weilguni.

Along with the best holiday and city hotels, awards were also given to the most valued respective personalities from the Swiss hotel world. 198 travel professionals opted for the CEO of the HUUS Hotel Gstaad-Saanen.

Bilanz described this choice as follows: “Thanks to his perseverance, networking abil­ ity and feel for the specific characteristics of the Gstaad-Saanenland region, along with Marwan Naja and the active support of the hotel manager, Mirka Czybik, the native Tyrolean, Günter Weilguni, undertook some drastic measures with the former ‘Steigenberger’, resulting in the creation of the contemporary hotel dreamworld of ‘HUUS’.”

THREE MINDS, THREE YEARS: ONE HUUS !

“We want to develop a new, alternative concept.” At that time Mirka Czybik, Marwan Naja and Günter Weilguni were quickly agreed as to which direction their project should take.

It’s one thing to dream of a new, alternative and innovative concept. Implementing it is an­other.

And this would prove to be a ­Herculean effort. Hours, days and long nights were spent pondering over countless ideas and ­concepts, and not least over the ­financial aspects. These three creative minds worked at full steam for three years. The unique result is well-known and, since December 2016, has also been available for the general public to experience. Countless guests have already passed through the revolving doors of the unique HUUS world of experience at 1,111 m above sea level. If you are not amongst these, we would like to extend our kindest invitation to you. Marwan Naja readily admits: “I never thought that I would become a hotelier”. It is his love for the mountains and not least a sign of his love and appreciation for his adopted country of Switzerland, which opened the door to the hotel industry for this investor who was originally born in Beirut. The lady of the first ‘HUUSstunde’ (HUUShours) was also ­Mirka Czybik. Having lived in the Gstaad-Saanen region for almost 14 years, the ‘HUUSmeister’, a qualified NDS HF hotel manager who also poss­esses other top-level qualifications and training course certifications, had already worked successfully for seven years in a managerial capacity alongside Günter Weilguni at the largest hotel in the Saanenland, and also for seven years as assistant manager of the Design-Hotel Alpine Lodge Saanen and the Hotel Landhaus Saanen. “I didn’t hesitate for a second in

choosing whether to accept this challenge, which was my greatest one to date’, says the charming hotel manager. Ibiza, Berlin, Saanen ...

“Everything is new at the HUUS and it’s the perfect time to set trends”, reflects the native Berliner with conviction. As ‘cultural director’, as the HUUS management have occasionally described him, Ewald is responsible for ‘Project Hotspot’, and thus the HUUS Happenings.

Various artists will be appearing such as music bands etc. and pre-clubbing and DJ rotation are also popular. But the programme is also enriched by readings and similar events. The overriding aim should be to achieve a positive and unique at­mos­phere. People would instantly remember this.

They may or may not like the music. Whereas from the perspective of the entertainers, it’s also about creating an atmosphere of warmth, affection and true friendships. Thanks to his openness, positive charisma and straightforward approach to people, Ewald has already become acquainted with and come to appreciate many of the local people in the village.

“Music is a suitable medium for forming new friendships”, is his recipe for success. And so he chooses the same kind of music for the HUUS, as he would if he were playing in Ibiza or Berlin. The sound takes on a more relaxing or even more intense vibe according to the situation and atmosphere. Huus Story Busy construction workers, countless construction machines, trucks and containers. And amid the great hustle and bustle of ‘my holiday hotel’, I encountered a young, charming and helpful lady. The private and impromptu tour through the building site left me with a lasting impression. One thing was immediately clear to me: one day I would return here as a guest. This happened last year.

Four of us were now sitting in the car and travelling through the glistening sunshine on our way to the HUUS. Between Spiez and Schönried we savoured the countless fascinating views of the meadows and forests, the delightful villages and, of course, the magnificent mountain world. Just before our destination, on the expansive plateau between Saanenmöser and Schönried: the impressive Rübelhorn presents itself directly in front of us and the view of the mountainous world of the Diablerets with its glacier raises the joyful anticipation of wonderful days on holiday to an unimaginable level.

Just a few bends further and we arrive at our destination. The welcome at reception is noticeably friendly and check-in is professional and courteous.

Before we can have a proper look around, our luggage is taken to our room by a ‘HUUSghost’. Above Saanen and Gstaad, from our room and on our balcony we enjoy our first excellent ‘HUUSview’ of the dreamlike mountain landscape of the Saanenland.

Back in the lobby, basically the lounge, we are given an extremely warm welcome by the hotel manager, Mirka Czybik. We immediately feel as welcome as ‘HUUS family members’ rather than simply guests – because that’s the way life really is here in the HUUS ...

Mirka Czybik takes the time to show as around the HUUS. The concepts that were being developed at the time of my tour of the construction site have now become a reality. The design of the rooms through to the suites, as well as all the common areas such as the lobby, bar, restaurants and much more convey a sense of cosy and homely well-being throughout. Thanks to the friendly, dedicated HUUS team, you are quickly made to feel part of the HUUS family. Here we are spoiled, spoiled and spoiled some more ...

During our walkabout the hotel manager, Mirka Czybik, tells us about the many successful events that have taken place here since the hotel’s opening in December 2016. From the HUUS opening through to the Christmas celebrations, the sensational New Year’s Eve party, the regular parties with DJs and local residents in the lobby, the pleasant barbecue evenings in the garden, the numerous company events, seminars and much more in and around the HUUS. We soon discover to our delight that plenty of love and expertise has been applied both to the design of the facilities for the younger generation and towards the supervision and special kids programme.

It’s good to know that, here in the HUUS, the children are under the care of dedicated and qualified supervisors – including kids meals ...

But there’s also no danger of the bigger folk or the long in the tooth getting bored. The diverse programme included in the room price ranges from expert guided walking tours to mountain bike tours, to sports activities such as tennis, climbing and day trips with rucksack and camera. In winter there are guided winter hikes, snowshoe tours, ice climbing and much more on the activity menu.

And so I found and experienced the Hotel HUUS, whose name is no coincidence, to be like a house in the truest sense. HUUS manager, Mirka Czybik, runs this oasis of well-being with a loving hand and, along with her staff, she manages to convey this unique atmosphere to the guests time and again.

We spent soothing days for the mind, body and soul at the HUUS – the children were thrilled too ...

GONE TO THE DOGS Nice to meet you. My name is Charly. And I am not just anyone. I am THE ‘HUUSdog’. And I am proud of it. Not that you think I only exist as a cartoon character. Nothing of the sort. True. My appearance is really not so big and terrifying. But then I can bark like a big dog and whenever I break into a short sprint. Wow, pardon, woof. Not that you would already have a false impression of me. I am a thoroughly lovable chap, no, actually I am a female. ‘Charly’ the female dog, to be precise. In this regard, I also maintain a certain je ne sais quoi ...

Admittedly, I’m already a little spoiled. I could spend the whole day being cuddled. Woof! Many thanks in advance. And, of course, I love kids too. I could scamper around for hours with them and act the fool.

But when things get too lively, then my boss steps in. So just between us, but please – pssssst: every now and then she is a little strict with me. But the ‘HUUSmaster’, pardon me, the ‘HUUSmanager’ and I are a dream team nevertheless: she slaves away all day for the benefit of­ the HUUSguests and I observe from ground level that everything is being done correctly ...!

WINTER SPORTS ON LOCATION “Being a ski instructor is a passion, not a job!.” Michael Zimmermann is now staring his fourth season as head of the Swiss ski school, Saanenmöser, with the appropriate level of motivation and enjoyment. This ski school is ­operated by Alpinzentrum Gstaad, which also has a base at the HUUS. With 50 instructors, Saanenmöser is the smallest, or rather the most family-friendly ski school in Saanenland. Which in turn has plenty of advantages, as Zimmermann points out: “Everything at our ski school is conducted on a personal level. And therefore, in particular, we can place a great emphasis in ensuring that every guest is assigned the proper instructor.” Thus he too can also be found every morning at the ski school’s meeting point and he is always willing to provide help or advice for guests as well as ‘his’ ski instructors.

“Unique!” is the word that Zimmermann uses to describe the service provided by the Saanenmöser ski school for HUUS guests. A visit to the ski school office, for example, is no longer necessary. The booking of lessons at the ski school can in fact be done directly at the HUUS. The reception are happy to take reservations, and they also look after tickets. The costs are booked directly to your hotel room.

FREERIDING, SKIGUIDING, SKI-SHOPPING “Saanenmöser and the Saanersloch is a super area for beginners and at the same time offers challenging off-piste for advanced skiers”, the ski school manager knows only too well from his many years of experience. Transport from the hotel to the ski area is assured

by HUUS and naturally free of charge.

Hiking, climbing, biking, rafting, marvelling Hiking & Biking “You need to be in good physical condition. We take responsibility for everything else”, says Simon Bolton, “and you don’t need any previous experience for any of the ac­ tivities on offer.” And you can rely on the assurances of the manager of Alpinzentrum Gstaad, one of the largest Swiss providers of outdoor activities. As a local native, who had already done plenty of skiing and climbing as a child, and who has ­completed an internationally recognised training course as a mountain guide, as well as being a qualified ski instructor and rafting and canyoning guide, along with management experience as the former manager of the Saanenmöser ski school, he knows the region with its vast potential better than almost anyone else.

Free Outdoor Activities His personal aim is to provide guests with unforgettable experiences in the magnificent natural surroundings of the Saanenland. Whether it be rafting, climbing, abseiling, canyoning, Indiana Jones or even biking. Without exception, everything takes place outside – and all participation in these outdoor activities is completely free for HUUS guests – including equipment such as bike, helmet, jackets or karabiners. Bolton adds that all the facilities are tested and certified, and they meet the strictest safety requirements.

The activities, each lasting half a day, are run by trained guides. Since the guests have varying levels of knowledge and experience of each particular programme, groups are created to accommodate the respective experience levels. And hardly anyone is too young to be left out. According to Simon Bolton, “Children are very welcome to participate in some of the activities.” Further information is available from the HUUS reception – where registrations are readily accepted up to the night before.

THE BEST VIEW COMES AFTER THE HARDEST CLIMB.

On foot with Thomas R. “Looking after guests is a dream job!”, says Thomas Rüegger, who is totally in his element. And, conversely, it is a dream for the HUUS guests that the qualified chef and graduate of the Business and Hotel Management School in Lucerne, who grew up in the canton of Aargau, can make their stay even more unforgettable. Rüegger has been living with his family in Saanen for 23 years now and has accumulated a fair amount of knowledge about the region and its many characteristics. The young Thomas was out in the fresh air in all weather as a child exploring the mountains. With his hiking guide training provided by the Swiss Mountain Guide Association, the father of two put the crowning glory, so to speak, on his connection with nature. Whether information on flora, fauna or the climate, whether something interesting and perhaps secret about the region and its history. Thomas Rüegger knows better than anyone else how to convey this on the ground in an interesting and original way. Those who discover the beautiful Saanenland by foot with the ‘hiking master’ are sure to return to the HUUS with a bulging rucksack full of wonderful memories.

Wanderful Rüegger’s portfolio includes leading more than 30 different hiking routes lasting around three to five hours: “I chose all the hiking routes myself and have created detailed descriptions of these with the differences in altitude, profiles, lengths and much more information.” Included are a whole variety of destinations that are neither accessible by car nor by mountain railway. “We enter another world within just a few minutes and the numerous hills and mountains offer a constantly changing perspective”, says Rüegger. It goes without saying that consideration is always given to guests when setting the pace and, where possible, when selecting the routes. And as hiking and marvel-seeking are known to stimulate the appetite, the hikers’ rucksacks are always filled with a tasty HUUSselection of culinary delights. Rüegger conjures up fruit, sausages, fresh bread, drinks and even a small grill from his rucksack. It is a matter of honour that all participants actively take part in the search for wood. It’s off for some hiking pleasure – or even pleasure hiking! Whatever takes your fancy. Simply wander­ful …! Mecca for relatively easy, and above all, safe freeriding with plenty of variety – even for beginners! The latest equipment for this activity is also available at the HUUS ski shop.

Craftsmanship The team and their boss, Giuseppe Colella, combine traditional delicacies from the Alpine region with genuine and contemporary cuisine. This involves the processing of regional and seasonal products to create grassroots cuisine. It goes without saying that attention is paid towards freshness and sophisticated taste. Efforts that have already been rewarded in less than a year by leading experts in the scene as follows: The HUUS head chef, Giuseppe Colella, has been awarded 14 Gault Millau points for his outstanding cuisine. A distinction that not only makes the Italian proud. It inspires him to invite his guests on further culinary flights of fancy!

Colella and his team won over the Gault Millau experts with the following creations (extract from the report): “At the start we were delighted with the little squid and calamaris, deep-fried in crispy polenta crust. The salad made from freshwater crayfish, fava beans and pecorino tasted fresh and light. The vitello tonnato with slightly sour tuna fish sauce and capers was of supreme quality. The succulent pikeperch fillet in fine mushroom sauce tasted as good as the crispy strips of turbot on edamame purée with a dash of lemongrass oil. The chef showed exquisite craftsmanship with the mouthwatering guinea fowl breast on gravy with summer truffles.

For dessert, there was also an orange symphony of pastries, candied and marinated oranges and a delicate orange sorbet.”

Trekking & more In the summer season, the supervised children spend most of the morning at the HUUS. While the parents are enjoying the lavish breakfast up until 11 a.m., the little ones can help themselves to the ‘Zmorge’ buffet that has been specially arranged for them at their own adjoining Kids Restaurant.

Then the kids can play, do some handicrafts, baking, discover secret passages at an orienteering session at the HUUS and much more. After having a child-friendly lunch together, it’s off into the fresh air. “We go out in all weather”, states Anita emphatically. Depending on the age of the kids, the weather and whatever takes their fancy, they can visit the outdoor swimming pool, light a bonfire, visit a petting zoo, discover one of the many playgrounds in the local area, blow bubbles in the air or let off some steam at a trekking event ... On the subject of hikes, Anita believes that it’s more or less about offering extensive walks with one aim in mind: a picnic, a campfire, grilling sausages, collecting specific plants and much more.

Snow after school In the winter, however, the programme often looks just the reverse.

Particularly if the kids visit the ski school in the morning (booking of lessons, hiring of equipment etc. can all be done very easily at the HUUS ...!). The youngest age groups are then driven back to the HUUS at around midday on the HUUS ski shuttle. After the child-friendly and energy-boosting lunch, Anita mostly organises activities such as games, handicrafts, designing Christmas decorations etc. The bigger kids are normally back at the ski school between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Depending on the weather, mood and desire, the kids then build a snowman in front of the HUUS, which, in any event, lets them burn off any leftover energy in a friendly snowball fight, before relaxing their tired spirits afterwards in the indoor pool.

Anita Krebs immediately bursts with enthusiasm whenever she speaks about here clientele, the young and youthful HUUS guests.

Born and raised in the region, the former leader of a playgroup in Gstaad understands the wishes of little Selina and Noah junior like no other. When, in the summer of 2016, Anita came into contact by chance with the managers of the design hotel at a ‘HUUS construction site open day’, neither party needed much more convincing.

As the person responsible for the holiday well-being of the young ones (and their parents ...) from their first HUUS day, fixed programmes are not her norm. Quite the contrary: Anita meets the children for the first time during their tour of the HUSS upon check-in and when moving into their room, has a chat with them and their parents and then, where possible, puts together the programme according to their age, wishes and suggestions. Anita has to show flexibility, flexibility and more flexibility. Officially, she always looks after the young ones from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. When things are really buzzing at the HUUS, the children’s day can start as early as 9 a.m. and last until 8 or 9 p.m.

EVERY DAY STARTS FROM SCRATCH Two differently designed play rooms – one for the youngest offspring and one for the elder kids – provide the younger ones with a wide range of games and entertainment options.

These rooms may, of course, also be used by the kids whenever Anita is not around. And as the kids restaurant is located right next to the ‘older persons’ restaurant, the children can visit their parent’s table during mealtimes in the adjoining room just a few steps away. Or if the kids want to eat with their parents, the kids restaurant and the playroom are only a stone’s throw away.

Anita Krebs takes everything on a day-to-day basis as it happens, and therefore is always ready to listen to the wishes of the parents and kids. Previous experience has shown that most families plan their daily programme by mixing their own programme with that of their kids.

Anita says, “It’s always a matter of ‘instinct’, whatever the parents and kids have in mind. That has always worked very quickly and very well up until now …!”

AUF WIEDERSEEN! See and be seen In the restaurant not far from the car park, you can hire rowing boats, pedalos and stand-up paddle boards and one-day fishing passes can also be purchased. Along with the buggy-friendly tour of the lake or taking a break at one of the many campfire areas, the Lake Arnen fan recommends the hike to Lake Retaud, which takes around two hours. The ­approximately 500 metre difference in altitude is ­rewarded with magnificent views. Those who are fortunate enough can spot marmots close to the small lake or even ibex in the springtime. The legendary Lake Lauenen is also a must-see lake for the HUUS guest, not least because of the song by the group Span about the most famous of the three lakes. 20 to 30 years from now, this real beauty spot is likely to be just a marshland. As a result of a popular referendum, dredging is actually forbidden in any lake situated within a nature reserve. So get there soon – before it’s too late ...

Whether the door is jammed, the tap is dripping, the heating doesn’t work or the corridor on the third floor is currently in darkness: never fear, Roland is here. As technical manager, Roland Schopfer always has a solution.

The man for every incident over the last 26 years, he knows every nook and cranny of the HUUS, every socket, every boiler, and indeed every nut and bolt like nobody else. And he also knows Lake Arnen better than most. “I was always fishing there as a young boy”, reveals the self-described big fan of the lake. 30 years ago a former builder’s shack came up for rent on the lakeshore and he immediately seized the opportunity. His handiwork skills and the assistance of his family helped make it possible for a weekend bijou sleeping space for seven people to be created from the shack – solar panels are used to provide eco-friendly energy here amid the splendour of natural surroundings!

Consequently, the Schopfer family can often be seen at Lake Arnen on weekends. This little gem has become something of a second home for the HUUS technician, “It is an invaluable place of rejuvenation.­ One weekend spent there provides me with more relaxation than a week’s holiday!.” Living in a hut without TV, the pleasant evenings, the hiking and swimming and my water-mad Labrador. And, of course, the fishing. And if none of the char, rainbow trout or Canadian sea trout offered by the canton take the bait, then some ‘pork trout’ is prepared for dinner, jokes Schopfer.

What’s more: Roland Schopfer is also happy to provide some secret lake tips exclusively for HUUS guests. Please don’t tell me any more…!

Huus Adventure

It is one of the finest stretches of railway line in all of Switzerland: the journey with the MOB, the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer Montreux Oberland Bernois, from Gstaad/Saanen via Rougemont, Château d’Oex, Rossinière, Montbovon and Les Avants down to Montreux on Lake Geneva.

A stretch, in fact, of ‘only’ 45 kilometres. But it has everything in it. Remo Poschung gets to experience this anew every day. For twelve years now, actually, the locomotive driver who lives in Zweisimmen with his wife and two small children has enjoyed the privilege of having the best view. “As the train travels relatively slowly, you don’t just see a lot, but you can also properly savour it”, comments Poschung on his everyday work. There’s no hint of boredom in the driver’s cabin, even after countless journeys.

The many different stations, the constantly changing speeds, the differences in altitude, the varied working hours and the big changes in climate for such a short stretch provide ample variety. Then, for example, whenever his train travels through the still deeply snow-covered Saanenland and, one hour later, he can enjoy a coffee break at Montreux train station in the sunny spring atmosphere.

THE TRAIN STOP IN SONZIER WOW! The view. Simply phenomenal. We have just left the tunnel next to Les Avants at almost 1,000 m above sea level. To the left and right and below us the magnificent scenery with forests, meadows, villages and vineyards. The view extends across to our neighbours in the French Alps and it almost gives the impression that we could leap from here directly into ‘Lac Léman’, as it is referred to in French, which sits directly below us.

Yet probably the most exhilarating 10 km rail journey and an altitude difference of 575 metres now await us. Fully focussed on his highly responsible job, the train driver also catches a glimpse of the almost endless expanse – below us on the left, in the direction of Wallis, and on the right, in the direction of the wine-growing region of Lavaux on the northeastern shore of Lake Geneva. With the required care, Poschung manoeuvres his train, which is several tonnes in weight, around tight bends and through tunnels. He recalls that he had to unexpectedly brake here due to a fallen­ tree trunk lying on the tracks. No mean feat at a gradient of up to 73 %. “The most beautiful stop on the whole route is Sonzier”, says Poschung. And if, at this ‘stop on request station’, nobody was to get aboard or disembark from the train, he would make a short stop for the reporter nevertheless. Fortune is on our side. The button has already been pressed at the stop. Someone wants to join us on the journey. We now make a fully official stop. Very soon, I realise why ‘my’ train driver is so enamoured with Sonzier. Here, five kilometres before Montreux, at 655 m above sea level, the views over Lake Geneva are simply and utterly breath-taking. It doesn’t get any better than this!

FROM THE LAKE TO THE MOUNTAIN And once we arrive at Montreux on the banks of Lake Geneva, after a picture-postcard journey lasting 80 minutes, Remo Poschung recommends the onward journey from the neighbouring platform on the cog railway along the Rochers-deNaye, which sits at an elevation of 2,042m above seal level. “The view from up there is simply wonderful”, romanticises my travel guide. Or make a stopover in Les Avants and travel up towards Sonloup on the nostalgic and recently renovated funicular railway. You are also rewarded here with great views of Lake Geneva. May sees the blooming daffodils and in winter visitors are enticed by a sledding paradise. Speaking of views: these can be especially admired during the trip in a panoramic train with oversized windows and VIP seats at the front of the train (prior reservation required!). And because it is so beautiful and unique, the train driver, Poschung, recommends the return trip in a Belle Époque train. A standard ticket is sufficient for the respective routes on both adventure trains. On the return journey to Saanen train station and upon bidding farewell to my ever so friendly, helpful and genuine train driver, I am left with one certain thought: the route from Gstaad/Saanen to Montreux is not merely one of the most beautiful rail routes in Switzerland – it is the most beautiful!

THE HUUSSPIRIT He is the sole record holder! No one has remained faithful for so long to the largest hotel in the Saanenland. It all started back in 1990 as a concierge with responsibility for the minibars in the rooms. He then explored the local area as a chauffeur and was soon appointed as reception/porter.

And with regards to Zivo (pronounced “Chivo”), as all his work colleagues but also HUUS guests can and do call him, this term of reference has only positive connotations. Whereby the word ‘furniture’ is only partially justified in the situation. That is to say that Zivo has undoubtedly evolved into a ‘good HUUS spirit’ by now. Zivo here, Zivo there, Zivo everywhere. No matter what job comes up, no matter where a fire has just started, no mater how many tables need to be moved to another room, no matter when and how many guests need to be picked up at the train station, mountain railway or from their shopping, no matter how many guests have just arrived whose luggage needs to be brought up to their room. Calm, level-headed, professional and always exceptionally friendly: this is how everyone knows Zivo. Having resided in the Saanenland with his family since 1984, he is only too happy to offer tips to HUUS guests regarding excursions, sports facilities and much more.

04.08.2018 11. Glacier 3000 Run The route of the Glacier 3000 Run leads through the picturesque Saanenland and then up to the ­ glacier, over snow and permanent ice for 26 kilometres.

The destination is situated at an altitude of 2,950 metres and the runners must overcome a difference in altitude of 1,900 metres.

The events around the running event take place at the ice rink.

Not a moment's delay Zivo himself says that he does everything from A to Z. In addition to the previously mentioned activities, this includes the preparation of conference rooms, working in the workshop, driving the HUUS bus, parking cars, taking post to and collecting it from Saanen, driving guests on time to the ski school on the ski shuttle and so on and so forth ... nothing escapes Zivo’s attention.

He sees everything and has a sense for the well-being and needs of the guests. “I like the fact that no two days are the same, being on the go a lot, the variety and, of course, the active contact with the guests”, replies Zivo to the question as to what still keeps him motivated in his job after almost 28 years.

Not to mention as well the very good ongoing cooperation within the team and the pleasant working environment. When asked whether he also wanted to be involved with Project HUUS, he said that he would be very pleased and thankful at any rate.

Zivo adds, “I had to accept right way!”. And on the rare occasion that this good soul cannot be found directly at the HUUS, then you are sure to meet him doing some mushroom hunting in the forest in the summertime or on extended walks in the fresh air during the winter. Relaxing and recharging his batteries for the next exciting assignments in the service of the HUUS guests ...
