From the Headmaster “So, what author have you chosen for your Junior Symposium?”

When I ask this question each year, students typically light up in response. Whether they’ve chosen Dickens or Fitzgerald, James Baldwin or Haruki Murakami, Toni Morrison or Cormac McCarthy, Gunston students take pride and ownership in their choice of Junior Symposium author, and the five associated books they read independently as the foundation for this 15-page research essay.

Indeed, the Junior Symposium is one of Gunston’s most storied academic milestones.

Beyond preparing each student with the research, interpretive, and writing skills they will need to excel in college, the assignment’s focus on individual student interests venerates the act of reading as a vehicle for lifelong learning and reinforces the sacred place of books in our community. Books remain at the heart of the Gunston experience, and a simple walk through the Susie Konkel Atrium or the Long Academic Building or the Alice Ryan Library will reveal dozens of students quietly reading both for school and for pleasure. To honor our community’s commitment to books, we have dedicated this year’s Multum in Parvo to the theme: In Celebration of Books.

As you’ll note in the Bookshelves of Gunston feature, books on campus are not confined to the library, and Gunston teachers model their love of books, lending personal favorites freely from their individual classroom collections. Sadly, a significant number of Americans—26%—report not having read a single book during the past year, a number that continues to grow. As for the debate between books and e-readers, we recognize that some individuals are comfortable with the e-reader format, but a majority of readers continue to prefer the feel and texture of an actual hardback or paperback book. In either format, full-length books will continue to occupy a central place in the Gunston curriculum, and it is our hope that students will take their love of reading with them beyond their time on the Corsica River.

There are so many exciting things that are happening at Gunston, and both our program and our enrollment continues to expand and diversify. We are thrilled to announce the launch of The Chesapeake Watershed Semester for Fall of 2018, and we are excited by the recent groundbreaking of Heron House, our new waterfront athletic center. None of this would be happening without a visionary Board of Trustees, an incredible faculty and staff, and a wonderful student and parent community.

With this in mind, here’s wishing the entire Gunston community—both past and present— our deepest gratitude for your strong and ongoing support!

As the Chair of the Gunston Board of Trustees, it is my privilege to make these introductory remarks to the Gunston Community, including its students and alumni.

Gunston continues to grow and improve in many ways. Our campus now includes a new headmaster’s residence, surrounded by almost an additional three acres of green space. The former headmaster’s residence is being converted into a much needed waterfront athletes/academic facility. Our access to the shoreline is also being significantly improved as part of a wonderful storm water restoration grant, and an exciting new program, entitled the Chesapeake Semester, is about to be launched.

But even more exciting is the continuous numerical growth of our student body. For the year 2017/2018, Gunston’s enrollment has nearly reached its full capacity goal of over 200 students and it is anticipated that this level will be achieved once again for the 2018/2019 academic year.

Last year members of our senior class were accepted by more than 189 colleges and universities, and were offered more than $4.8 million in financial aid and scholarships. These staggering statistics evidence the continued growth and success of our academic program.

Finally, Gunston continues to maintain its role as a valued member of the vibrant community in which it is a part. Hundreds of young citizens participated in the Gunston/YMCA summer camps in 2017, and Gunston continues to serve as the host school for the Queen Anne’s County Horizon's School, which is a six week summer program for under-privileged children, designed to combat the “summer decline” so often faced by these students.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish to express our great admiration and thanks to the faculty, administrative staff and our community supporters for their collective efforts that have made Gunston such an exciting and wonderful school in which our students can continue to grow and fulfill the high goals set forth in our Mission Statement.

New Board Members

Greg Farley

Mr. Greg Farley is Director of the Center for Leadership in Environmental Education (CLEEn) and Professor of Biological Science at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills. A marine zoologist and evolutionary biologist, he holds an MS from Florida State University and a BS from Duke University.

In 2011, Farley studied at the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM), part of the University of Hawai’i-Maui Campus. Since his return, he has worked to bring successful ideas home to the Delmarva peninsula. Case studies that illustrate these lessons are captured in his new book, Thinking Like an Island: Navigating a Sustainable Future in Hawai’i, co-edited by former SLIM Executive Director Jennifer Chirico.

Robert Fordi

Mr. Robert Fordi P ’18, ’21, of Chestertown, MD is CEO & Managing Partner of Realterm Logistics, the surface transportation logistics platform of Realterm, a $4+ billion-in-assets global multi-strategy real estate private equity firm. Since joining the firm in 1998, Mr. Fordi has helped the company build the largest third-party-owned real estate platform serving the transportation industry in the U.S. and Canada.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Mr. Fordi serves on the board of Kent School, an independent K - 8th school in Chestertown, MD, and as a member of Chestertown, Maryland’s Planning Commission. Mr. Fordi received a BS in Economics from Towson University, as well as an MS in Real Estate Development from The Johns Hopkins University.

Patricia Parkhurst Mrs. Patricia Parkhurst '88, P ‘18, ‘21 currently teaches Art at Kent School and has served on several area boards including the Kent School Board of Trustees, and Gunston's Second Century Capital Campaign committee.

An alumna of Gunston, Pat lives in Centreville with her husband, Steve, and their three children, two of whom currently attend Gunston. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College and a Certificate in Fundraising from George Washington University.

Meet the teachers...

Shahpour Ahmadi Math Chair

Dr. Shahpour Ahmadi was previously an award-winning professor at Morgan State University.

He brings extensive knowledge of curriculum development and classroom instructional technology integration. Having formerly worked both as an engineer and a secondary school math teacher, he earned his Ed. D in Mathematics Education, and a M.S. in Math from Johns Hopkins University.

Mike Davenport

Assistant Athletic Director for Waterfront Athletics Dr. Mike Davenport came to us from a distinguished administrative, teaching, and coaching career at Washington College, where he was a four-time winner of the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Association's Coach of the Year Award, and where he was named the 2013 National Coach of the Year by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Beyond his work with our students and programs, he will also continue his long-time relationship with US Rowing and Community Rowing in Boston, where he will further best-practices in coaching and connect Gunston's program to a wider network of support.

Zachary Hoisington Science Teacher

Mr. Zack Hoisington, teaches Biology and coaches multiple sports. His professional experience includes work as a researcher at the University of Maryland's Horn Point Laboratory and as a science teacher at Sts. Peter and Paul High School. Mr. Hoisington earned his B.S. in Biology from Colorado College; while there, he was their lacrosse team cocaptain, an All-American, and three-time SCAC Player of the Year.

This fall we welcomed six new team members to the Gunston community.

Thomas Chafey

Technologies Coordinator Mr. Thomas Chafey serves as our Technology Coordinator and Computer Science Teacher.

Mr. Chafey earned his B.S. in Computer Science from Frostburg State, and he most recently worked as a Systems Technician at EAG labs in Easton. An independent school graduate from Christchurch School in Virginia, Mr. Chafey is also an avid sailor. He served as an instructor at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and is now coaching sailing with Mr. Granger.

Kendall Davis

Admissions & External Relations Associate Ms. Kendall Davis joined Gunston as our Admissions/External Relations Associate. As a 2016 graduate of Washington College where she served as an Admissions Counselor, Ms. Davis supports Gunston's admissions office, enhances our communications and social media presence, and serves as the primary presence in the reception area. She has a B.A. in English and Theater, with minors in Creative Writing and Dance.

David Miller

Director of Global Programs Mr. David Miller is the Director of Global Programs and Diversity. After earning his B.A. in English (with a minor in Chinese) from Kenyon College, Mr. Miller spent two years as an AmeriCorps volunteer in Seattle. He recently earned his M.A. in International Education from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont, where his thesis was "Internationalizing Secondary Schools by Growing Global Programs." He is experienced and widely traveled, and he was most recently at Avenues: The World School in New York City as part of their global programs administrative team.

Classof2017 #gunstonalumni On the morning of June 10, 2017, The Gunston School celebrated its 106th Commencement, graduating 42 students from the Class of 2017. The longtime tradition of an outdoor ceremony along the banks of the Corsica River was greeted with sunny skies and warm smiles.

Bagpiper Hal Cummings led the processional, as the girls in white formal dresses carrying flower bouquets and boys in blue blazers and khakis processed slowly into the ceremony.

Class President Lizhi “Cliff” Peng opened with a warm greeting, followed by each senior presenting a favorite quote, a long-time tradition at the school.

This year’s commencement speaker was W. W. “Buck” Duncan, Jr. Mr. Duncan currently serves as President of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation and previously held the position of President & CEO for The Talbot Bank. Mr. Duncan earned a Master’s Degree in Management from University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Davis & Elkins College, Elkins, West Virginia. He was a Captain in the United States Air Force as well.

Mr. Duncan has served on several local boards including United Fund of Talbot County, Rotary Club of Easton, The Memorial Hospital at Easton and Chesapeake College Foundation and commissioner of the Easton Utilities Commission. Mr. Duncan lives in Easton.

Duncan’s address focused on life lessons he has learned over the second and third quarters of his life, “1. Be thankful for everything worthwhile in your life. 2. Accept responsibility for your actions and lack of actions. 3. Respect yourself, your family, your friends and your associates. 4. Maintain a healthy self esteem. 5. Make and take advantage of opportunities—even though this comes with risks. 6. The positive 'can-do' attitude can make good things happen to you everyday.”

In Celebration of Books •by Amanda Newell In Celebration of Books: A Retrospective For nearly thirty years, In Celebration of Books, or, as we simply say on campus, “ICB,” has been one of Gunston’s most important traditions. Over the course of that time, it has evolved into its current incarnation, where a single writer, or two, is invited to the school each fall and spring. They are writers of local, regional, and national prominence and range from fiction writers and poets to memoirists, historians, and scientists.

After a public reading or talk in the morning, the visiting writer conducts workshops with students at a specific grade level, and where they go depends on their area of expertise. For example, when Dr. Mary Evelyn Tucker, co-author of Journey of the Universe, came to Gunston, she gave a multimedia presentation for the entire school and then worked with the sophomores, who studied her book as part of the History of Ideas course curriculum. The idea, John Lewis says, is to “expose students to as many different kinds of writers as possible during their time at Gunston.”

This spring, we also hosted the sportswriter, novelist, and ESPN NFL Insider Dan Graziano. The morning event featured Lewis and Gunston’s Athletic Director, Jon Mellinger, interviewing Graziano in the “GSPN Zone” as part of their talk show, “J & J By the Bay.” While they talked sports, they also asked Graziano, a classmate of Mr. Lewis at Georgetown University, to reflect on his path to becoming a sportswriter and on-air commentator. Then, in two separate breakout sessions, Graziano led informal talk sessions with the seniors and spoke to them, among other topics, about the challenges of navigating different social media platforms.

The staff of Multum asked Sarah Everdell, former Humanities Chair and coordinator of ICB, and Nancy Robson, ICB Author Emeritus and parent of Gunston alums Matt and Abby, to reflect on the early days of the program, where we would often host from twelve to fourteen writers in one day, and what it was like to navigate snow and fog, and the swine flu. Assistant Head Christie Grabis also offers her memories of ICB and explains how it was an outgrowth of the Junior Symposium project.

ICB Sarah Everdell, Former Humanities Chair & ICB Coordinator In Celebration of Books started while we were still a boarding school under former Head Peter “Stick” Sturtevant, who always encouraged somewhat zany ideas, and the idea of getting students excited about books was a great focus of many of us. Physically bringing books to the students was important and at the time, Mrs. Mann from the Corsica Bookshop in Centreville would allow me to take as many books as I wanted for students to purchase and then bring the rest back.

While shelving these one year, I met Hadley Mann, Mrs. Mann’s granddaughter, and she eventually taught at Gunston for a few years. We had a banned book section for a few years at the book sale which was pretty popular, but this was later, after we became coed. Originally, there were no visiting authors—we held in-school workshops where we discussed topics such as the role of “light” in literature.

The late Gail Johnson, a former faculty member who taught math, did a combined math/literary workshop, and Mike Kaylor, who ultimately joined the Gunston faculty, did his magic in bookmaking classes. We also had everyone dress as their favorite character for the day, and there was a bulletin board dedicated to the recommendation of books. When we went coed, the idea of dressing up did not go over as well with the boys.

Students also wanted real authors: enter Nancy Robson, who was not only a Gunston parent at the time—she was a novelist, memoirist, and freelance writer.

Nancy Robson, Author Emeritus In 1997, Sarah Everdell, Gunston’s Head of Humanities, invited me, a new Gunston parent, to a meeting to help plan In Celebration of Books. Previously, the teachers had dressed up as their favorite authors or literary characters. I suggested instead creating a daylong writers’ conference for the kids with seminars taught by professional writers. As a writer myself, I had writer friends, and also had no qualms about cold calling anyone I thought might be a welcome addition.

Since the school could offer such a large group only a small honorarium each, a key enticement was hospitality. We found places for the visiting writers to stay. The evening before, I threw a dinner party at our home to put everyone at ease and offer a sense that the day would be fun as well as inspiring for all participants. It worked. The energy was palpable.

Over time, we tweaked the details, but for nine years, ICB remained essentially the same. I spent the better part of six months each year recruiting writers while Sarah organized the program and prepped students and faculty. Mike Kaylor, who had recruited Pulitzer Prize winner, Richard Ben Cramer, also prepped students and helped them design and print the broadsides that the writers signed and took home at the end of the day.

Each year, we were blessed with Pulitzer Prize winners, National Book Award winners, poets, artists, graphic artists, journalists, photojournalists, playwrights and more who came with enthusiasm, energy and generosity. And each year, the anticipation among the students and faculty grew.

Four years into the program, Sarah Everdell asked award-winning biographer Nathaniel Philbrick to be ICB’s keynote speaker. As it turned out, ICB was Philbrick’s introduction to the Eastern Shore. Fifteen years later he returned with Valiant Ambition: George Washington, Benedict Arnold and The Fate of The American Revolution.

He said he had been inspired by his first visit to the history he found here.

ICB Christie Grabis, Assistant Headmaster One element of In Celebration of Books dates back further into our boarding school days. I consider it a predecessor of sorts. The Junior Symposium culminated with an evening literary forum. The event took place in the former Auditorium, which is now the art studio. Each junior came to the event in the character of her author.

The program opened with each author sharing highlights from his/her life and publications. Some, of course, appeared posthumously.

Following the presentations, the faculty and students had time to meet each author. The faculty’s role was to ask probing questions that affirmed the students’ level of investment in the Symposium. The tenth grade, I believe, were “the press” and had to interview the authors with any number of prepared questions. The evening ended with a closing statement from each of the authors.

In the day school era of ICB, we opened the day with the facultyauthors introducing themselves and the focus of their workshops. It was great fun for many of us, and I enjoyed my roles as Camus or Sartre. The transition to the panel of professional writers elevated the program remarkably, and I still hope that all of the students over the years think back to the opportunities they had to speak and write in companionship with such talented and well known artists.

We must also recall the book sale.

While the details of money and accounting proved to be somewhat harrowing, it was a great delight for the teachers to “talk books” and help students discover and uncover the many forms and styles of literature. I enjoyed discussing with sophomores ideas for their Symposium and with the juniors, ideas for their Senior Thesis. It proved equally fulfilling to talk to the students about the authors that they or we had enjoyed or been surprised by.

Some of my fondest memories go back to the days when Catherine Cunningham, our former Latin teacher and

Foreign Language Department Chair, would manage the book sale while Sarah Everdell managed the student groups as they came to the sale. Meanwhile, the parents provided all of the delicious, seasonal snacks—hot cider, hot cocoa, cookies, spice cake, along with sundry candies or nut mixes. All in all, ICB reflects Gunston’s long-standing dedication to authentic instruction and experiential learning.

On Junior Symposium & Gunston’s Writing Program During spring break, it is not uncommon for many of Gunston’s recently-graduated students to return to campus to visit us. One of the most common refrains the English Department hears is, “No one else on my hall knows how to write a paper. They don’t even know what MLA [Modern Language Association] format is!” Our former students are surprised, but we are not. From the moment our students enter the ninth grade, the English Department works to prepare them for their Junior Symposium and Senior Paradigm projects, which truly represent the culmination of their high school academic careers.

Most of ninth grade is spent laying the groundwork: acquainting the students with basic essay format and MLA citation style. They learn how to annotate their reading, a skill which we reinforce throughout their time at Gunston, and they are introduced to the basics of academic research, which involves discussions about plagiarism and academic integrity as well as learning how to make discerning choices when looking at that research. With these skills in place, students work on developing their critical thinking on a poetry project, where they examine several poems by one poet and are asked to write a paper discussing poetic technique and the ways in which those techniques reinforce the poet’s theme.

By the end of sophomore year, many students have already decided the author they want to read and study for their Junior Symposium. They spend the entire year working mostly independently on this project, which asks them to read the major works of their selected author (we typically ask for at least five novels, or the equivalent from playwrights and poets), identify the major themes in the author’s work, and write an analysis that synthesizes their research and critical ideas.

Recently, eleventh grade English teacher Moe Weimer has re-imagined the “symposium” aspect of the project—while students are not asked to dress up as their favorite author, they do engage in roundtable discussions of each other at the end of the year. This is an opportunity for students to

ICB ask questions of their peers, and it is also a time where students make an “argument” for why their author—whether living or dead—is relevant, and what their author adds to the broader conversation about literature. As part of this retrospective, Mr. Weimer has also shared, in a featured essay, his own journey with books, how reading contributes to cultural literacy, and why the Junior Symposium is such a critical part of the Gunston student’s education.

The Senior Paradigm project, now seven years old, was John Lewis’ vision for a kind of capstone project for seniors, and it replaced the Senior Thesis, where students traditionally chose a theme to study. Then, they would read four or five books addressing that theme in various ways.

Some students elected to view a film in place of a fifth book. The Senior Thesis offered students a format to explore a particular interest, which was varied and encompassed a wide range of topics, from the study of existentialism to the role of nature in literature.

Because the transition from high school to college is one of the most significant ones in a student’s life, the English Department conceived of a project where students would reflect on the major influences in their lives. What people and experiences have shaped them? What knowledge or wisdom have they gained, and how has that knowledge affected their paradigm of beliefs and values?

In sum, they are writing a memoir. And while there is a substantial written component of the project, students also have the creative license to present their projects in a variety of different formats, and they work with a faculty or staff mentor throughout the year to ensure the substance of the assignment is met. “What’s really been fun,” says Lewis, “is to watch how the paradigm grows every year in terms of the creative risks students are willing to take.” In addition to more traditional memoir narratives, students have also written their own books of autobiographical poetry, created photography essays and choreographed videos, and a few have recorded, in a studio, their original music compositions on an EP. “What they have,” Lewis noted, “is essentially an artifact that we hope they will cherish in the years to come.”

Lila Ingersoll, 2017 winner of the Junior Symposium Award Lila Ingersoll ’18, Editor-in-Chief of Gunston’s literary magazine, Effectrix, was last year’s winner of the Junior Symposium Award for her work studying Ann Patchett. Titled “Patches in the Quilt of Life,” Ingersoll’s symposium focused on the ways in which Patchett’s work demonstrates the human need for connection and examines the ways in which we, as humans, try to escape the past, as well as the consequences of doing so.

Her symposium also offered a deft discussion of some of the stylistic signatures of Patchett’s work: “Patchett’s use of a non-linear narrative mimics the natural pattern of thoughts, as our brains flash between the past, present, and future. By connecting memories with present events, she explains why events unfold the way they do and shows just how much the past affects our future.”

Last summer, while Ingersoll was vacationing Nashville, Tennessee, she stopped by Parnassus Books, which is co-owned by Patchett. “It was the most amazing experience,” she said. "I spent so much time pondering the inner workings of Patchett’s creative mind, and then to be able to see her in person—I felt as though there was a reason I stumbled upon her work. It was as though all my daydreams and brainstorm sessions came to life when I met her.”

For her senior internship, Ingersoll will be working at the Tribeca, New York City studio home of Four Way Books, which is celebrating its 25th year as a small press publisher. Four Way Books boasts an aesthetically diverse catalogue of poets and fiction writers. The press published Gregory Pardlo’s book Digest, in 2015, which was ultimately awarded the Pulitzer Prize in poetry. The Director and Founding Editor, Martha Rhodes, was a mentor-supervisor to current English Department Chair Amanda Newell at Warren Wilson College, where she recently graduated with an M.F.A. in poetry.

On Mike Kaylor and the Craft of Making Books

Anyone who knows Mike Kaylor knows him to be a human almanac and a master printer. Kaylor first came to Gunston as a guest for In Celebration of Books, and he was ultimately hired to teach in the Humanities Department--both English and history classes. His classroom has always been one of the warmest ones on campus in terms of atmosphere. Filled with hundreds of books, old wooden library card catalogs, and his own hand-printed posters, students naturally migrate to his room when they are in need of creative inspiration. Indeed, his first classroom at Gunston, located in the “Brick” basement of what is now Everdell Hall, contained Kaylor’s personal printing press, which lent a distinctly steampunk Mike Kaylor English/History feel to the room.

For nearly thirty years, Kaylor has also taught a bookmaking class at Washington College’s famed

Literary House. In addition, he and his students are tasked with printing broadsides for the college’s visiting writers—these broadsides are created in a limited edition and often feature a poem, or a particularly poignant passage from the visiting author’s work.

When Kaylor joined the Gunston faculty, he began making hand-printed broadsides for In Celebration of Books. Every year, students and faculty looked forward to a new design, and the broadside featured the names of the day’s visiting authors. The Alice Ryan Library now houses framed and signed copies of many of those broadsides. More recently, as ICB has evolved, we have featured bookmarks and postcards to celebrate the day.

Kaylor is also responsible for printing every student’s personalized graduation announcement, Diploma, Green and White Day Awards program, and the graduation program, itself. “They are exquisite and beautiful mementos for students to save and remember the day by,” observes John Lewis, Head of School. And the fact that they are hand-printed is symbolic of the personal care that we, as a school, invest in our students.”

On Harry Potter and the Importance of the Junior Symposium •by Moe Weimer To say that I’m a Harry Potter fan is an insultingly gross understatement.

Let me explain. Every day I hit up a website called Pottermore, the digital heart and soul of the Wizarding World, and my go-to spot for abating my not-so-casual obsession with Harry Potter. Just the other day, I took a break from working on my computer, opened up Pottermore (I’m always signed Moe Weimer, English Teacher in), and started to digitally explore the nooks and crannies of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Somewhere in the middle of catching up on the latest peer-reviewed research concerning how loyal a wand truly is to a wizard, I realized something. Stuck in thought, I closed my computer, walked over to my bookshelf, and picked up my original paperback copy of The Sorcerer’s Stone, the first Harry Potter novel. Just a quick glance would tell you that that book has been loved like all good books should be. What’s left of the spine is cracked in too many places to count. There are tears on the fading cover, and the musty-colored and crisper-than-normal pages are literally falling out from the book’s binding. What I realized in that moment was that I’ve been a Harry Potter fan for almost twenty years and that I’ve had this book longer than any other.

I bought it at a book fair in the fifth-grade with money that I saved from doing chores, and since then, I’ve been obsessed with the series, the world, and the characters, reading each book countless times and resorting to Pottermore to get…well, more Potter.

Fortunately, I’m not the only one who continues to love this magical world. Harry Potter is everywhere. As of February 2018, the series has sold over half a billion books and has been translated into over eighty different languages. For starters, there are the films and the theme parks, Wizard Rock bands, and Wizarding World cookbooks with mouth-watering recipes for Cauldron Cakes and Butterbeer. And I can’t forget to mention that there is an official Quidditch league with over 300 teams around the world (shout out to University of Maryland’s Quidditch Team who won last year’s regional championships and will be competing at the national level this spring). continued page 19 18

On Harry Potter and the Importance of the Junior Symposium continued With all of this considered, it doesn’t surprise me when friends, teachers, and critics make claims about how Harry Potter shaped an entire generation and charmed them to fall in love not only with the story, but with reading as well. Perhaps as a result of this, I sometimes have a hard time wrapping my head around the thought that any sort of hatred toward reading can exist in the same world where one in fifteen people owns a Harry Potter novel. As far as reading trends in America go, things were looking good! However, a couple of years ago, a friend recommended that I read a report from the National Endowment of the Arts, and what the NEA found in that report stuck with me and challenged me as a teacher and as a wordnerd to reflect on America’s relationship with reading.

from 2002’s number, I still think about the relationship that my students have with reading often. I wonder, is it that we don’t like reading stories, or is it more that we don’t like how we read stories?

In the spirit of reevaluating our personal relationships with reading and in addressing this question and those like it, juniors at The Gunston School commit to an exploration of the complexity of America’s relationship with stories by selecting an author, reading at least five texts by that author, writing a comprehensive analysis of the ideas and themes implied in those texts, and evaluating the significance and relevance of those ideas and themes within the paradigms of our lives. In addition to composing this document and honing their skills with grammar, students research, discuss, and write about the relationship between reading and empathy, the psychological comforts of storytelling, the importance of perspective, and the challenges of reading in today’s world. The project culminates in a formal defense, as each student presents their thesis and their data to the class in a classically-structured Symposium.

As should be the result, the student’s accomplishments are celebrated by the community at the end of the year. Perhaps this is the most magical part of the entire project: the moment in which an entire community gets together and celebrates reading for everything that a passion for reading can offer us.

In 2004, the NEA published Reading at Risk, a comprehensive analysis of America’s engagement with literary fiction. Perhaps you’re unfamiliar with the report, but I’d be shocked if you were surprised by what the report found: Americans are spending less time reading now than they have in years past. In 1982, for instance, 56.9% of the adult population of the United States read at least one work of literary fiction. In 2002, that number decreased to 46.7% of the U.S. adult population. Follow-up reports from the NEA in 2007 and in 2012 didn’t offer much in terms of giving educators a reason to dismiss these concerns.

The Launching of CWS •by Emily Beck This past February, Gunston’s Board of Trustees formally approved the launch of a new, ambitious, and important educational endeavor: the Chesapeake Watershed Semester. The fully-accredited, semester-long program for high school juniors and seniors will welcome eight to twelve Gunston students in its inaugural semester, and will seek to welcome students from around the region and beyond in future years. Utilizing the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed as the foundation for an immersive, rigorous, and interdisciplinary curriculum, and with a strong focus on the domains of environmental science, public policy, and sustainability, CWS is the only secondary school program of its kind. The inaugural semester will commence this August.

More than two years in the planning, and borrowing from Gunston’s 20+ years of innovative Chesapeake Bay Studies programming, CWS will offer students extraordinary learning and life experiences. Within the intensive fifteen-week program, students spend nearly a third of their time on various leadership expeditions and field experiences, ranging from a trip to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, to seminars with public policy leaders in Annapolis and Washington, to an extended tour of the energy-producing regions of Pennsylvania, to a multi-day stay on the ecologically fragile Tangier Island, where the impacts of sea level rise can be observed first-hand. Meanwhile, rigorous classroom, lab, and research project work will deepen each student’s academic foundation, leading to a capstone action project to be publicly presented at the end of the program. We expect that each cohort of CWS students will emerge as reflective and confident scholars and leaders who can support regional and global environmental sustainability through their understanding of scientific, social, cultural, and political systems.

Twenty years ago, I was a sophomore in high school and newly accepted into the initial cohort of students attending the Rocky Mountain Semester at the High Mountain Institute in Leadville, Colorado. Within my sophomore class of 60, there were just four of us who dared to do something different with part of our junior years by attending semester schools. Setting off on this new adventure was exciting and nerve wracking at the same time. Two decades later, life has come full circle and I had the opportunity to send acceptance letters to Gunston’s first cohort of Chesapeake Watershed Semester (CWS) students. I have that same sense of nervous excitement helping Gunston launch the Chesapeake Watershed Semester as I did as a high school student ready to embark on an ambitious new program.

Each of us had watershed experiences in our youth, times that helped define us and provided a clear direction forward. I hear these stories again and again as we share the Chesapeake Watershed Semester with the world. We look forward to providing this type of transformative learning opportunity to the students attending CWS for many years to come.

From the Sustainability Desk I have been impressed by Gunston’s deep sense of place and environmental identity since arriving five years ago. Indeed, it was Gunston’s celebrated Bay Studies program that drew me to the school initially.

Since then, I have had the pleasure of stewarding Gunston’s Environmental Strategic planning process.

The plan is ambitious, the funding limited, and the process is slow but we are seeing incremental progress. Teaching and learning is at the center of what Gunston does. We have put significant work into understanding Educating for Sustainability as an integrating context for Gunston’s environmental, global, and technology initiatives, and have worked with both faculty and the Board to envision teaching and learning in the 21st Century at Gunston. Themes that continue to emerge include place-based and project-based learning, student driven inquiry, college readiness and cultural competency.

In the past year, Gunston faculty have put in extensive professional work time to update their curriculum maps in Atlas. The strength of Atlas is its ability to allow us to analyze how and what we are teaching, increasing the strength of the learning experience for our students. Presented here is the analysis of Educating for Sustainability (EfS) in all of Gunston’s classes.

This analysis would not be possible without the efforts of our faculty and the leadership of our administration. My heartfelt thanks to both groups.

The results are truly impressive, clearly positioning Gunston as a regional and national leader in environmental teaching and learning.

Austin '05, a standout athlete, participated in Fall sailing and Spring lacrosse, receiving the following recognition in Lacrosse: '04 2nd Team All-ESIAC, '05 2nd Team All-ESIAC, '05 1st Team AllMILL, and '05 Gunston Athletics Award.

Austin was an excellent sailor and excellent student. He led the team by example both on and off the water, working hard whether it was a practice or a regatta. Says Coach Ben Arminger, "His focus on sail trim and tactics set the example and the expectation for the rest of the team."

Patrick '08 followed in his brother's footsteps, achieving equal success. Lacrosse: '05 2nd Team AllESIAC, '07 2nd Team All-ESIAC, '08 2nd Team All-ESAIC, '08 Honorable Mention MILL. In addition, Patrick was a member of MASSA Undefeated Sailing team 2006.

Says Arminger, "Patrick was a freshman when Austin was a senior. Patrick had big shoes to fill, and I think he instinctively knew that a lot was expected of him on the water. He was among my top two strongest freshman skippers and went on to lead the team just as his brother did. I often noticed how clear it was that the Kana boys were cut from the same cloth. Both excellent students, both excelling on and off the water, and both exhibiting selfless leadership skills."

Alexia Bivings writes from Tucson, Arizona, “The Gunston I attended was just wonderful and I have never forgotten the three years I spent with Aunt Mary who taught Geography. In my mind’s eye I can see the Big House and the cottage...the tennis courts and the stables. Riding was one of my favorite courses. I am happy that what the Middletons started has continued and grown. All are to be congratulated.”

Kathy (Owen) Gleason retired after 31 years as a real estate broker in Pittsford, New York and is enjoying her three “gifted, talented, and advanced” grandchildren!

Some fond memories that Kathy shares: “great school trips to NYC to see the National Horse Show, going to church with our nightgowns on under our raincoats, getting to miss study hall to watch The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. Most of all, good times with good friends.”

Melissa Browne has enjoyed a long and fulfilling career in publishing and teaching.

Writes Melissa, “I was an English major in college—simply because I loved reading and writing—I was fortunate to do an internship my senior year at The Viking Press, which

led to a job after graduation. I stayed there for a few years and then worked at Villard Books, a division of Random House. I loved working on the books and meeting the authors—Stephen King, Gail Godwin, and Leonard Cohen, to name a few—but publishing was more of a business than I had anticipated. So, after a few more years, I left to be a teaching assistant while I got my master’s degree in Teaching English at Teachers College.”Melissa often thought of teaching, in part inspired by some of the dedicated teachers she had at Gunston, such as Mr. Blackwood and Ms. Jayne.

They shared their love of exploring ideas and asking questions and pushed her to think outside the box. “I still recall a long discussion with Mr. Blackwood comparing Julius Caesar with 1984 on a bus ride back to school after seeing the play. Most of all, they showed me that being a teacher is about a lot more than delivering content; it is about respect and facilitating learning.”

Up until 2015, Lauren's focus was driving ad revenue that supported the editors who were creating the content for both print & digital mediums for such brands as Fitness, Teen Vogue, InStyle and Lucky.

Lauren has since moved to the leading mobile ad tech startup, Kargo. In her current role as SVP Global Publisher Partnerships, Lauren leads an international team whose task is to work with their top tier publisher partners to monetize their mobile web inventory with custom Kargo ad creatives.

“It was at Gunston that I first gained the leadership skills and confidence that has helped me grow in each position throughout my career in media. I am so thankful for Christie Grabis’ and Anita Gruss’ mentorship especially by coaching me in basketball, field hockey and lacrosse. Learning how to be a part of a team made me understand the dynamics of working together for a common goal which has translated to the business world.”

Catherine Rodgers, a graduate of Rollins College and Middlebury College, lives and works in Milan, Italy, where she is the assistant director of The Unicorn Gallery.

Carmen (Berbegal) Roque lives in Spain and is a Project Management Professional at her family’s company, ACTIU. ACTIU is a company that specializes in the design and manufacture of office furniture for work and contract spaces and is present in over 70 countries in five continents. Carmen visited the States this past summer and her children had the opportunity to attend YMCA Camp Gunston. She enjoyed a tour of campus and caught up with past teachers and friends!

Becky McKinney graduated with an AA from the University of Maryland and is applying to schools to earn her BA in Nursing. “Going back to school is challenging,” admits Becky. “I appreciate every moment.” Says Becky, “I miss so much all the girls from my class, especially my roommate of 3 years,

Grace Evans is the legislative analyst for education, energy and environment, the RAND Gulf States Policy Institute, judiciary issues, and child policy in the RAND Corporation’s Office of Congressional Relations. Prior to joining RAND, she was a policy associate at Health Care for America Now and worked for Congressman Frank M. Kratovil, Jr. Grace earned a B.S. in environmental science and policy from the University of Maryland and a J.D. from The George Washington University Law School.

Owen Bailey graduated from Washington College in 2007, with a degree in American Studies and completed a Masters degree in English Literature in 2009. Owen worked at the Rose O’Neill Literary House on the college campus for almost seven years, collaborating with visiting writers and helping with student publications. Today, Owen is the Facilities and Administrative Coordinator for the Easton office of the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy. He and his wife are very active in the Chestertown community, where he launched a close bid for town council last year.

Devin Wootton was voted “Most Likely to Become President” in his senior year.

He isn’t the President yet, but last year he was selected as the new Assistant Head of Pine Cobble School in Williamstown, Massachusetts after a competitive nationwide search. Previously, he served as a dean and language training teacher at University Prep School, an independent middle and high school in Seattle.

Tess (Jones) Hogans was recently named Executive Director of The Garfield Center for the Arts in Chestertown. After graduating from Gunston, Tess majored in Theatre and Dance Studies at Wheaton College and was the recipient of the college’s 2010 award for Excellence in Acting. Tess returned to Chestertown and began teaching drama part time for grades 6-12 at The Maven Academy in Annapolis as well as running an after school acting workshop at the Garfield. In 2014 Tess became the Theatre manager. Tess and her husband Matt are the proud parents of two girls, Marion and Ronan.

Garrett Bethmann '07 and Travis Bethmann '08 recently stopped by campus to reconnect with past teachers and tour campus. The Bethmann brothers are enjoying life in Lake Tahoe, California. Garrett works for Lake Tahoe Community College in The Incarcerated Student Program, which serves inmates of California’s correctional facilities and

promotes their educational success.

Travis is the Operations Coordinator at Galilee Episcopal Camp and Retreat Center in Lake Tahoe. He also works with wilderness medicine as a Wilderness First Responder, EMT_B, and volunteers for the local search and Rescue team.

Peter Fortenbaugh published his first short story “After the Fire,” in Niche Magazine No. 6. Peter lives in Madrid, Spain with his girlfriend, Cecilia.

Marva (Jones) Kumpf married Patrick Kumpf in a private family ceremony on the town dock in Chestertown on November 19, 2016. On May 6, 2017 they had a second ceremony and reception for extended family and friends. Those in the wedding party included matron of honor Tess (Jones) Hogans ’06, brother Ben Jones ’17, and high school friend Rachel Roman ’09.

Mary Beth Parkerson, Class of 2013 Mary Beth graduated a year early from Boston University with her bachelor’s degree in Health Science and focuses in public health and biology. An avid adventurer, Mary Beth spends her free time ice climbing, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, mountain climbing, skydiving, horse “packing”, sailing, motorcycle riding, cliff jumping, meditating, and now, traveling North America in her self-converted sprinter van.

Speaking of her latest adventure, “ I got inspiration to start this project from wanting to avoid paying rent and other bills in order to save up for my dream road trip. I hope to be on the road living this lifestyle for at least 18 months, but it depends how far my savings gets me. What happens next? Law school.

I believe it is important to take a break from the education cycle and journey to new lands in order to learn new skills, discover new passions, and naturally to cultivate friendships.

A gap year can be used to gain valuable insights into your own character, which helps show you your path in life. I am so happy to see #vanlife become more mainstream as people reject societies norms and start living to make themselves happy and fulfilled.”

Laura (Kade) Patsevich graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2014. She is the Clinical Research Site Manager at Plano Surgical Hospital, where she manages a research team to conduct phase II and III clinical trials in the indication of post-surgical pain.

The goal of these trials is to help combat the opioid crisis.

Jacob Jettmar has been serving in the USAF 509th Security Forces since 2014.

In September 2017 he married Molly Espey in Warrensburg, Missouri. Jacob is currently stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base where he and Molly live on base with their two dogs, Cooper and Emma.

Chastain Shenk has a started a new venture in cider making at Down East Cider in Boston, Massachusetts. Chastain is a territory sales manager for the state of Pennsylvania. Chastain commutes between Philadelphia and East Boston and considers Boston her new second home. Says Chastain, “The company started almost 5 years ago but we are still learning, growing, and starting up.”

Emily Brookshire ‘12 graduated from Loyola University in 2016 with a Bachelor’s degree in international and global studies.

She is currently a case manager at America Works of D.C. Previously she was a policy intern at Maryland Human Trafficking

Task Force- Victim Services Center and also served as an intern for the Office of Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand. In 2014 she volunteered at the Khlong Kacha School in Bangkok, Thailand as an English teacher.

Rowan Powell started a new job as a Transitional Age Youth Outreach Project Coordinator at On Our Own of Maryland.

Elizabeth Davis graduated cum laude from Frostburg State University this past winter. She majored in Health Science with a minor in Biology and earned membership in both Tri Beta Biology Honor Society and Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Honor Society. This past year she traveled to Africa with KIDS, a dental pro-bono group, helping children in Soweto, Johannesburg, and Cabo Verde.

Elizabeth is currently in the process of applying to dental schools. She is the sister of Catherine '12 and Lydia '21.

Tabitha Lin graduated a semester early this winter with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University. This wonderful accomplishment was celebrated by the Grabis family, who hosted her during her senior year at Gunston.

No Worries Mon! Cindi (Rosasco) Latimer ’81 was the lucky winner of Gunston’s Live Auction Raffle at October’s Bull & Oyster Roast and Alumni Reunion. Cindi, a long-time supporter, purchased two tickets in hopes of winning her choice of vacations. Says Cindi, “I have a tender heart for the spirit of Gunston and respect for her past and for her future.

Purchasing the raffle was a fun yet creative way to support Gunston. However winning the trip to Jamaica was beyond words...as the Jamaicans would say, Tank yuh (thank you)!”

Korren Campbell, a sophomore at University of Delaware, is a walk-on to the NCAA Division 1 Varsity Crew Team.

Korren is a Political Science and German major with a minor in Public Policy. She intends to earn her law degree.

| Class Notes | Rita Baghdadi, Class of 2003 Gunston faculty and staff remember Rita Baghdadi ‘03 as a tiny teen who carried a huge video camera everywhere she went.

From a young age, Rita had a passion for storytelling and film. At Gunston, Rita founded the Film Club, and recalls making movies with fellow classmates. Says Rita, “We had a ton of fun making those films. Maybe too much fun! I hope we can all watch them together one day.”

Today, Rita is an accomplished filmmaker whose lyrical, characterdriven work has been supported by Tribeca, iTVS, Netflix, Film Independent, Technicolor, IFP and the International Documentary Association, and has screened in top festivals worldwide. Rita has made a name for herself as a strong, intuitive vérité filmmaker.

“My quest is to leave people thinking, feeling, long after the screen goes dark,” says Rita.

Rita's documentary series City Rising, about development and displacement across California, is currently broadcasting nationally on TV. Her feature documentary, My Country No More, a coproduction with iTVS, recently won “best feature” at the the Big Sky Documentary Festival in Missoula, Montana.

In 2016 Rita worked as the Director of Photography on Served Like A Girl, a feature documentary about female U.S military veterans entering the Ms. Veteran America competition, produced by Seth Gordon. The film premiered at the 2017 SXSW film festival and went on to win Best Documentary at Bentonville Film Festival.

Currently, Rita is working as cinematographer on Kirby Dick & Amy Ziering's much anticipated feature documentary about sexual assault allegations in Hollywood and is in development on her next directorial feature.

Rita graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Film from Columbia College Chicago. She is co-founder of Endless Eye, a production studio based in Los Angeles, and through her company she has directed and lensed content for VICE, AJ+, Beats by Dre, Gatorade and Bud Lite among others. Rita is a member of the Los Angeles chapter of Film Fatales and the International Collective of Female Cinematographers. When she's not out filming Rita is an active mentor, dedicated to empowering women and girls through film training.

•In Memoriam• The Alumni Office has been notified of the passing of the following members of the Gunston Community. The faculty and staff of Gunston wish to express our deepest condolences to family and friends.

Mr. James Valliant, a beloved math and geography teacher at the Gunston School for Girls from 1967-1988 died peacefully on July 3, 2018 at the age of 90 at his home on the Corsica River in Centreville.

Ms. Alexandra Blackhurst ‘63 passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017. She was 72. Throughout her life, Alexandra remained a loyal friend and supporter of Gunston.

Teachers form the heart of Gunston, and there were few teachers during Gunston’s history who had a greater impact than Mr. Valliant. He held his students to high standards, and always insisted on good manners and proper etiquette. He was dearly loved by his students and colleagues and he remained a strong supporter of the school after his retirement. He will be deeply missed.

Mr. Terence Robinson Blackwood, father of former Headmaster Temple Blackwood and a former student of the Gunston Farm School (1932-1936) passed away on September 27, 2017.

The Valliant family, including Irish Setter, Finnegan, were fixtures on the Gunston campus. Mr. Valliant’s wife, Joanne, served as an art teacher from 1967-1972 and administrative assistant from 1979-1989. Their daughter, Mary Reed Valliant, is a Gunston alum ‘77 and taught at Gunston from 1986-1988.

Mr. Michael Andrew Marshall, a former Gunston trustee and long-time friend, died on November 4, 2017, at his son’s home in Durango, Colorado.

Mrs. Mary Warner Middleton Schneider passed away peacefully at her home on July 6, 2017. Mary was the granddaughter of Mary and Sam Middleton, who founded the The Gunston Farm School in 1911. She was a lifetime friend and supporter of Gunston.

Mrs. Margaret R. Stillman, an alumna of The Gunston Farm School, died peacefully surrounded by her children on August 6, 2016 after a short illness.

Building a Pathway to our Future Heron Walkway Each spring prior to graduation, seniors are given a personalized brick to be placed along the entrance way and paths leading to our school. This tradition, begun in the spring of 2011, commemorates each student’s journey at Gunston and serves as a symbol of their mark on the Gunston community.

Bricks are $100 each and can be purchased at gunston.org/support/heron walkway or email alumni@gunston.org.

Honorary & Memorial Gifts Personalized benches and picnic tables with an engraved plate are available for $1000.

Ways to Give Cash and Credit Card The majority of gifts to The Heron Annual Fund are in the form of cash, check, or credit card. Gifts can be one time or you can make a pledge—for example, your $1000 gift can be paid with 12 monthly payments of $83.33. A gift of $500 can be paid in monthly installments of $41.67.

Securities Gifts of appreciated stock held for more than one year may be tax-deductible for their fair market value on the day of the gift.

Matching Gifts Many corporations will match employee charitable contributions up to two times the value of the gift. On Saturday, October 14th, over 240 parents, trustees, alumni and friends gathered for our signature Bull & Oyster Roast and Alumni Reunion.

A friendly corn hole tournament, delicious barbecue, and wonderful silent and live auction items made for a festive event on a beautiful fall evening.

Alumni, including the Class of 2007 celebrating their 10 year reunion, toured the campus and caught up with past teachers and friends. The sold-out event raised over $80,000.
