From the Headmaster Dear Gunston Community: Gunston has always been defined by the dedication, skill, and quality of our teaching faculty, and the school has never lost sight of the fact that beyond all other elements of school life, the teacher-student relationship is the most transformative. This edition of Multum in Parvo is dedicated to celebrating the remarkably talented teachers who grace Gunston’s campus, animate our classrooms, and use their wisdom, talents, and character to successfully guide students through their school experience.

When I arrived to Gunston seven years ago, I was immediately struck by the quality of the school’s teaching culture, the remarkable degree of teamwork and collegiality, and a faculty growth orientation that was eager to embrace and incorporate innovative ideas. This culture remains, and serves as the school’s greatest strength. While there are many reasons a family might choose to enroll a child at Gunston, it is the extraordinary day-to-day classroom experience—where students are both challenged and nurtured—that provides the most enduring lifetime benefit.

With our strong teacher core leading the way, Gunston continues to grow and thrive. We once again saw record enrollment, and the school opened in 2016-2017 with nearly 190 students.

In addition, as you’ll read within, the school was able to acquire 3.4 acres of additional waterfront property this year, setting the stage for the development of a new waterfront athletics and academic facility.

Let me thank every member of our community for your ongoing loyalty, trust, and dedication to the school. Young people thrive in the Gunston environment, and we are grateful for your support.

From the Board of Trustees Dear Gunston Community: As Chairman of the Board of Trustees, I’d like to dedicate the following remarks and observations to the Gunston community who support, promote and embody our mission every day. Gunston enjoys some of the strongest strategic assets that any school could ask for—an unparalleled connection between a dynamic faculty committed to outstanding teaching and engaged students with untapped potential; an impressive, compelling campus which reflects a strong commitment to the environment, and the visionary leadership of John Lewis and the administrative team. Equally important, a vigorous and supportive Board of Trustees and a generous parent and alumni community contribute to a community steeped in tradition and excellence. It is within and upon our unique campus that each Gunston student, faculty and staff member, in his or her own way, absorbs Gunston’s mission and becomes a better person. The Gunston Mission Statement is a living entity that informs our every action and our every decision.

This past September, Gunston welcomed 189 students, the largest student body admitted to date.

This impressive increase in enrollment reflects and recognizes the essence of our mission that offers students the opportunity to become their best selves. We expect that this robust trend in admissions and increasing interest in Gunston will continue as the surrounding community recognizes the educational journey upon which our students embark—a journey where students can not only reach their potential but achieve the deeper riches of their promise.

Promoting a healthy balance between mind and body, our athletics program teaches the important values of teamwork, tenacity, and sportsmanship. We applaud and support the notable successes and growth of our program. Our AIMS (Association of Independent Maryland and D.C. Schools) fiveyear progress report, based on our successful 10-year accreditation visit, was reviewed, completed and submitted in March.

In the months ahead, more information will be forthcoming about the Athletics Facilities Master Plan and the construction and development of Heron House, our new waterfront athletics/academic complex. This exciting project will allow our student-athletes to develop their skills in a building that will accommodate their needs, skills and interests.

Finally, as a member of the Board of Trustees for the past 10 years, I am filled with genuine admiration for Gunston’s strong community as we collaborate and work together to ensure our students receive the very best education we can provide. Our students will continue to be inspired by innovative educators who will offer them an opportunity to grow and realize their individual gifts and untapped potential. Gunston has a remarkable history that we honor. As we envision the future, I am confident that we will continue to build on the vast accomplishments of the past as we create new programs and approaches to learning that heighten student engagement in innovative ways.

New Board Member Mrs. Mara Schmittinger joins the Board of Trustees. Mara is an Occupational Therapist at Nemours/ Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware. She serves as Vice President of the Occupational Therapy Board for the State of Delaware’s Division of Professional Regulation.

Previously, Mara was a founding board member at St. Anne’s Episcopal School in Middletown, DE. She also serves on many committees for the Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware. Mara was a multiyear president of the Gunston Parents' Association and is the mother of two talented Gunston students, Claire ‘16 and Isabelle ‘19.

Graduation

On the morning of June 11, 2016, The Gunston School celebrated its 105th Commencement, graduating 39 students from the Class of 2016.

The longtime tradition of an outdoor ceremony along the banks of the Corsica River was greeted with sunny skies and warm smiles. Bagpiper Hal Cummings led the processional, as the girls in white formal dresses carrying flower bouquets and boys in blue blazers and khakis processed slowly into the ceremony. Class President David Rogers opened with a warm greeting, followed by each senior presenting a favorite quote, a long-time tradition.

The commencement speaker was Mr. Alan Griffith, longtime advocate of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Prior to 8 ‹‹‹

moving to Centreville, Maryland, with his wife Penny, Griffith retired from The Bank of New York. During his distinguished 41-year tenure he served many roles including president of the bank from 1990 to 1994. During his last 10 years at the bank, he directed the international banking sector, retiring in 2005 as vice chair of the board.

Alan’s extensive experience on multiple boards—including Lafayette College, The ALS Association, Chesapeake Bay Museum, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon—makes him an invaluable leader with extensive experience in development, communications, and governance of nonprofits.

Griffith’s address focused on the

road the graduates have traveled and will travel. Until now their road has been narrow, decisions made with guidance from their parents and teachers. He informed the graduates that their road was now widening, and gave some “unsolicited advice.” “A successful trip down your wider road requires personal leadership—I am not talking about organizational leadership—I am talking about the leadership of yourself— leadership that you must demonstrate by your daily conduct and the decisions you make—it must be mature and thoughtful personal leadership that will ensure your college experience is fulfilling and rewarding—and it prepares you for the even wider road that awaits you after college.” He summarized, “let your

decisions be determined by—1. Your visions of what you want to accomplish 2. Being ambitious—having quiet confidence you can achieve your goals 3. By always being honest with yourself 4. By always maintaining self-control 5. Your commitment to having a strong work ethic.

On Friday, June 10, the Green & White Awards Ceremony was held in The Field House. Student Government President, Kailani Clarke opened the ceremony, followed by Headmaster John Lewis. He addressed the class of 2016 and praised them for their accomplishments, adding what a privilege it had been to lead such an extraordinary group of young men and women. He wished them all the best in their future endeavors.

Valedictorian Abigail Barcus reflected on her years at Gunston, “I remember our Embarkation Day like it was yesterday. Standing at the Centreville Wharf, my name was called first and I hopped into a boat with several of my new classmates. Our boat took off from the dock and we rode along the Corsica River in our pastel button downs. I was in awe of the fact that I was arriving to school by boat. The whole ride, I was thinking, ‘Most kids go to school by bus, but I’m going by boat? This is crazy!’

I will never forget how surreal that moment felt and how truly grateful I was to be going to Gunston. At the time, I had no way of knowing that Embarkation represents something much more meaningful than a simple trip from the

wharf to the shores of Gunston. Now that I am here, one day away from graduating, I understand that Embarkation is such a special tradition because it symbolizes the start of the high school journey through Gunston.”

Barcus gave some parting advice to her classmates, “Class of 2016, take today to enjoy the memories and reminisce about the past 4 years, but when it comes time to embark on your next journey, jump out of the car without hesitation and run to this new, unknown, and exciting adventure called your future.

Congrats to the Class of 2016. We have arrived!”

The Gift of Gunston Teachers It is often said that it only takes a single teacher to change the course of a child’s life, and each of us can remember clearly the teachers, coaches, and advisors who inspired us to achieve to the fullest extent of our capacity. Great educators help us to see our best selves; they unearth our obvious passions and our latent talents; they open our eyes to new knowledge and intellectual worlds unknown; and most importantly, they inspire in us the pursuit of learning, goodness, and excellence.

Since our founding in 1911, Gunston has cherished and celebrated the art of teaching.

We understand that from the first minute students arrive to school in the morning until the final moment they leave campus for the day, their growth and development is fundamentally shaped by their interaction with their teachers. As a school, Gunston recognizes that the cultivation and sustainability of a superior faculty is the key to the success of our school and our students.

Thus, when the question is asked, “What makes Gunston’s teaching faculty so unique?”, here is the answer:

A CULTURE OF HIGH EXPECTATIONS A former Gunston parent was recently asked, “How is your son doing in college?” The answer: “As I expected, college has been an up and down experience for him, but the one thing I can say is that Gunston prepared him to succeed. Many of his classmates simply don’t know how to study, and they haven’t been pushed.”

In a school, teachers are the guardians of the flame of expectations. At a recent faculty meeting, the question was explored, “Who was the best teacher you ever had, and what were their characteristics?” During the discussion, a number of “best teacher” characteristics were shared—nurture, passion, intellect, creativity—but the singular quality shared by all “best teachers” was this: the teacher’s class was intensely challenging, and nothing but high-quality work would be accepted.

Reflecting on their own student experience, one teacher said, “My best teacher saw more in me than I saw in myself.” When one considers that Gunston is an environment filled with a multitude of these “best teachers”, a powerful image can be conjured.

As Gunston students make their way through the hallways, they travel in an environment where they are not simply viewed by their teachers as human beings in the present, but also as future adults with limitless potential.

Maintaining a culture of high expectations is an ongoing challenge, and as a wise educator once said, “The enemy of high expectations is not low expectations, but mediocre expectations.”

MULTI-DIMENSIONALITY AND DIVERSITY At Gunston, we have math teachers who are creative writers, history teachers who are artists, science teachers who are superb athletes, a photography teacher who also

teaches guitar, an art teacher who is an environmentalist, and English and foreign language teachers who are talented musicians.

Moreover, nearly every administrator at Gunston teaches: the Headmaster teaches American Government, the Assistant Head teaches Ethics, the Dean of Students is the Music Department Chair, the Athletic Director teaches Wellness, and the Director of Admissions formerly taught Mathematics.

Our teachers also advise clubs, coach sports, lead trips, and serve as personal advisors.

Meanwhile, our teachers hail from the Eastern Shore, the Far East, South America, Europe, and states far and wide.

PASSION AND CREATIVITY A passion for learning is, literally, infectious.

Walk around the Gunston hallways, and you can hear the excitement. Spanish verbs and nouns, Egyptian civilization, the United States Constitution, tabletop lighting, the quadratic equation, creative music composition, modern American poetry, the science of climate change, the makeup of a cell, the strong force—all of these are academic topics covered during a typical year at Gunston. For many, these might seem at first glance like inanimate topics, but in the hands of passionate and creative Gunston teachers, they come vividly alive. As a student said this year, “I never knew I liked Chemistry until I understood how cool it was.”

NURTURE The late Poet Laureate Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Several years ago, an extremely bright young woman arrived at Gunston at the start of her 10th grade year. Curious, hardworking, and creative, she came to Gunston feeling insecure and defeated by an experience at her previous school. During her time at Gunston, she formed a series of strong bonds with her teachers, and it became clear that she possessed a deep interest and passion in Computer Science.

As she grew in self-knowledge, she fully embraced her interests, and in college she eventually majored in Computer Science.

Teachers & Teaching

When Gunston recruits new teachers, we are keenly interested in individuals who are multidimensional. This is because we recognize that too many students in our modern era are trapped in the vortex of “OR”. I can be a student or an athlete, an actor or a Model UN participant, an environmentalist or a debater.

When a school has multi-dimensional faculty members, it creates an environment where the word “AND” becomes the norm: a student can feel comfortable being a musician and a basketball player and a history lover and a top physics student and a student government leader and a member of the Student Diversity Leaders Group. Faculty multidimensionality promotes student multidimensionality, creating an environment free of the power of imprisoning stereotypes.

Teachers & Teaching

Yet when she reflected upon the most important element of her experience at Gunston, she cited how much she was cared for by her teachers, not how much she learned in the classroom. Despite her bumpy emotional start, she graduated as an accomplished and confident young woman.

Just before she graduated, she shared in a speech, “At Gunston, my teachers cared so much about me that I learned to care about myself.”

COLLEGIALITY Often the most important things within a school are the least visible. Schools are governed by different layers of culture: community culture, parent culture, and student culture. At the center of these various cultures sits faculty culture. When the values of the wider world are in flux, teachers serve as a grounding force; when an element of the student culture fabric begins to fray, teachers work to sew it back together; and when parental anxieties rise, teachers provide a steadying energy. Even the smallest amount of neglect can negatively impact a school culture, and a healthy culture for young people can only be sustained through dogged, unyielding, and relentless effort by a dedicated team of educators.

At Gunston, teachers fully embrace this challenge and fundamentally understand that our work is, first and foremost, about students.

Indeed, student well-being is always at the center of our faculty dialogue. This positive, supportive, and healthy faculty culture at Gunston is a powerful force, and all educators new to Gunston feel its pull. It’s the reason Gunston is an attractive place to teach, and the reason that our faculty tenure is impressively lengthy.

OWNERSHIP When students enter 9th grade, they begin a key inflection point between childhood and adulthood, and one of the most important roles of a high school teacher is to model what adulthood should look like. In high school, the power gap between teacher and student naturally begins to close, and teachers are no longer unquestioned and infallible makers and enforcers of rules and boundaries. Students truly begin to mature when they realize that teachers and students are ultimately co-learners, partners in the educational journey, and fellow travellers on the road to a healthy adulthood.

Navigating the teacher-student relationship within a high school is a complex process: freedom coupled with expectations; guidance balanced with independence; flexibility coupled with boundaries. This is more easily observed than described. Walk the Gunston hallways on any given day, and you’ll observe a climate where teachers respect students, and vice versa. In the end, this respect leads to the full ownership of the Gunston culture by both students and teachers, where each holds the other accountable to the core values of the school.

Julia Burr Roveti, EWL Teacher/ Tutor Mrs. Roveti is a highly trained ESL teacher, having taught as a second language instructor for 6 years at Chesapeake College. She is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Middlebury College with degrees in English and Theater, and she is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in English at Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English.

Kellee Webb, Director of College Counseling Mrs. Webb served as the Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where she also earned her undergraduate degree, Magna Cum Laude, in Music. At Berklee, she was lauded for her intensively student-centered approach, her organizational innovation, and her superb external outreach. Before her tenure at Berklee, she served as an admissions counselor at Boston University, and beyond her extensive college guidance experience, Mrs. Webb is also a certified personal trainer and an accomplished bass guitarist.

Erin Ferguson, Latin Teacher Ms. Ferguson earned her B.A. in Comparative Literature, Russian and Classics from the University of Chicago, and she recently finished her M.A. degree in Classics from the University of Georgia. She has extensive classroom experience as a Latin Teaching Assistant and Tutor at the University of Georgia, and she teaches in the summer program at the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. She was a varsity rower at the University of Chicago, and during her time at Phillips Exeter, she served as a coach for both novice and experienced rowers.

Jessica Coner, Art/Pottery Mrs. Coner is a professional potter, and she manages the RiverArts Clay Studio in Chestertown. She received her education at Washington College and Evergreen College in Olympia, Washington, and she has specialized pottery skill expertise in areas ranging from wheel throwing and hand building to glaze making and firing.

Designing the Environmental Strategic Plan How to write an environmental strategic plan: gather the Head of School, a handful of dedicated Board members, experienced faculty, and a Rolodex of professional contacts. Spend hours brainstorming, discussing, researching, and educating colleagues about an alphabet soup of environmental education acronyms (EE, EfS, EBE, etc).

Visit other schools, environmental education centers, and read published plans. Admire institutions that have bottomless resources to construct LEED certified buildings. See opportunity to craft a new path when realizing that lovely LEED buildings and biomass plants, while not fully integrated into the taught curriculum, leaves sustainability the purview of the Business Office and Facilities Team. Seize on Gunston’s size, engaged faculty, and location as our greatest asset for fully integrating sustainability into the core of what we do.

By doing this we were now ready to respond to the charge laid out by the Strategic Plan published in 2014: “Develop Gunston’s role as a regional and national leader for environmental teaching and learning” by creating “an environmental strategic

In truth, the story of the strategic plan dates much further back than 2014. The seeds were planted by the formation of the Chesapeake Bay Studies Program in 1994, as well as Christie Grabis’s efforts to achieve Gunston’s initial certification as a Maryland Green School in 2011, and rose to prominence during the strategic planning process of 2014.

As an educational institution, Gunston has the responsibility of preparing students to successfully navigate the challenges they will face in the future, and it is clear that environmental sustainability is one of the core challenges our students’ generation must address.

Our 35acre campus provides a unique setting for student learning and can serve as classroom, laboratory, wildlife habitat, sports field, and ambassador for stewardship in action. Thus, how can we maximize this resource by implementing innovative projects that cultivate high-impact learning experiences?

Yet as David Orr’s quote suggests, educational institutions have been slow to adapt their philosophies, curricula, programs, processes, and facilities to reflect the current environmental reality. Gunston’s Environmental Strategic Plan is an ambitious and far-reaching proposal that seeks to address each of these domains.

The plan’s central goal is to move the concept of “sustainability”, especially environmental sustainability, even closer to the core of the school’s daily work. By doing so, we believe that Gunston will not only cultivate the values of leadership and stewardship within our students, but it will also provide institutional leadership to other schools as well.

The Environmental Strategic Plan seeks to explore a series of key questions: How can we better engage our students with the core issues relating to “sustainability”, and how we can move this concept closer to the center of Gunston’s teaching and learning process? Where within our curriculum are students introduced to key global sustainability issues and how are these topics scaffolded within our curriculum? How can we structure meaningful educational experiences related to sustainability while continuing to ensure that such experiences remain rigorous, studentcentered, and draw upon multiple modalities to offer rich learning opportunities that prepare students for college and beyond?

Considering the ethos of our mission and the scope of our campus resources, it is also important to consider the question: How might Gunston serve a wider range of students? Within the report, ideas ranging from hosting a youth leadership symposium to piloting a high school semester focused on the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay, have the potential to benefit not just current and future Gunston students, but young men and women from the wider community. Thus, working across many fronts over the next five years, we can achieve the goal that we set in our strategic plan: maximize Gunston’s waterfront location and to become a regional and national leader in environmental teaching and learning.

Implementation of the Environmental Strategic Plan began in earnest in the spring of 2016 with a comprehensive environmental and energy audit and the development of benchmarks and actionable goals. The audits’ findings are summarized on pages 22-23 and reflect the diversity inherent in the plan. We look forward to tracking and reporting on our progress annually.

Sustainability in the Classroom As we seek to prepare students for life beyond Gunston, it is crucial that they do not experience academic disciplines in isolation; rather, their academic work needs to be embedded into a highly-coordinated and engaging learning context that prepares them effectively for the society and planet they are going to inhabit.

Hands-on Inquiry in Life Sciences Primary research is rare in high school science classes. Why? Because it’s time-consuming, can be inconclusive, and is often messy. The opportunity to engage my students in primary research and to develop an advanced elective like Marine Biology, is exactly why I value independent schools and Gunston in particular. Our waterfront campus offers unparalleled access to marine environments for research.

Juniors and Seniors in my Marine Biology class designed and carried out independent research projects this fall. Topics ranged from “Measuring the impact of ocean acidification on oysters and coral” to “Effect of depth on oyster spat mortality in restoration populations”. The projects offered students opportunity conduct collegiate level work and experience the success, and failure, that comes from designing their own experiments.

The Long History of Sustainability in US History One of the seven themes of the AP United States History course is “Environment and Geography”.

This theme examines the role of environment, geography, and climate in both constraining and shaping human actions. Students explore efforts to interpret, preserve, and manage natural and man-made environments in the historical contexts in which they occurred. In the unit on the Great Depression there is a focus on the Dust Bowl and the migration of farmers from the Central Plains west to California. Students read excerpts from Timothy Egan’s “The Worst Hard Time”, a history of the Dust Bowl era. They also view photographs of migrants, listen to Woody Guthrie songs like “This Land is Your Land”, and view the film “The Grapes of Wrath”.

Through discussion and writing, it is expected that students will be able to place this era in its broader historical context and appreciate the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and the important role that the environment plays in shaping our communities.

Hall of Fame On May 18, 2016 Mr. Wick I. Dudley '08 was inducted into Gunston's Athletic Hall of Fame. Dudley is the 10th recipient of this award. He was honored and recognized for his remarkable achievements in sailing during his years at Gunston.

Dudley was instrumental in Gunston's MASSA (Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association) championship win in 2007. An excellent sailor and a true team player, Dudley and his crew, primarily Shelley (Lippincott) Armiger '07, were undefeated in 2007. The sailing team of Dudley's era remains the fastest sailing team to date.

“Wick has a natural sense for sailing and instinctively knows how to make a boat go fast,” says former coach Ben Armiger.

“He has all of the ingredients required to be a top notch skipper; cool, calm, smart, and patient.”

Dudley was a leader in and out of the water, says Armiger. He was skipper during all four years of his high school career, advancing in his skills each year, but always took time to help teach others how to sail, and how to sail fast! “He never had an ego that got in the way of doing the right thing for the greater good,” says Armiger.

“Wick was also legendary for his guitar playing and singing during long van rides to regattas. Even Maggie, the team mascot dog took a special liking to Wick,” said Armiger. “Maggie was with the team for every practice and regatta, and the pair were inseparable on dry land.”

After graduation, Dudley attended St. Mary’s College, where he was on the varsity sailing team from 2009-2012. Dudley continues to sail, and frequently coaches through Severn Sailing Association (SAA). In addition to sailing, Dudley has many other interests. He has spent extensive time backpacking Europe and South America, skiing and snowboarding in Montana, and whitewater rafting.

April (Smith) McClaskey, who joined us for our Bull & Oyster Roast & Reunion last fall, writes that she has many fond memories of her Gunston years, which began at the age of 9. April remembers the special times she had with the maids—Annie, Gladys and Myrtle and with George, the driver and handy-man, who taught her many things, such as how to whitewash the little out building. “There were the times I spent with Col. Boris Guenishka who gave me black tea, black bread dipped in melted salt pork and told me stories of Russia,” April recounts. 1994 Tanna (Barry) Centeno married Jay Centeno on February 28, 2016. The couple lives in Denton, Maryland.

1998 Jessica (Pressley) Noonan has been a lifelong student and traveling multimedia and performance artist since graduation. She is currently completing her BA in Philosophy and Anthropology and has been happily married to her husband, David, since 2009. They live in Marietta, Ohio with their cat, Octavius and horse, Teddy. Noonan remembers fondly, “bringing Anime to the Language Club foreign film sleepovers, all the great friends I made with my fellow dancers, and the performances at Churchill Theatre.”

Michael Stoltzfus opened Coquette in December 2008, a New Orleans restaurant offering innovative southern cuisine with an emphasis on locally sourced product. Stoltzfus grew up working on his family’s dairy farm on the Eastern Shore and then later on, learned to cook at his family’s bakery.

Stoltzfus thrives on designing personalized tastings menu for guests and creating a menu that changes daily. His inspired cooking earned his restaurant a four bean rating from New Orleans’ Times Picayune, a Star Chef’s “Rising Star” Award and most recently Stoltzfus was named a semi-finalist in the prestigious 2013 James Beard “Best Chef in the South,” award.

2001 Kate Kana and her husband Zander Parker are still chartering their 80-year old Ketch named Guildive and will be operating their 9th season this year. The couple sail almost all of their charters with their son, Coe, who turned two in

2005 Evan Heisman recently earned an M.S. degree in Management with a Public Relations specialization from University of Maryland University College and accepted a position as a staff assistant for the student affairs office at Duke University. 2011 Katie Eales is the co-owner and operator of Wild Encounters, a wildlife and fauna management company on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. Initially, the business focused on rescuing and rehabilitating sick and injured wildlife. It now offers a range of services from wildlife education programs at schools and other events to 24/7 Snake Catcher service.

Katie catches over 500 snakes per year, including the most venomous snakes in the world! Wild Encounters also offers a range of wildlife and fauna management and consulting services for government and private development works.

Elisabeth Laggini-Allen married Tye Allen last September.

Her wedding party and guests included many Gunston alumnae. Writes Laggini, “Gunston has given me twelve years of friendship with the most amazing people I know. I couldn’t be happier to have married the man of my dreams with these beautiful women beside me.”

Olivia Wood lives in Washington, D.C. and works at the National Gallery of Art. Olivia, who graduated from Rhodes College in 2011, writes that she is thrilled to help organize Mr. Dize’s visits with his art history class. Her favorite Gunston memories include Mrs. Everdell’s classes, Green & White Day, classes outside on nice days, Bay Studies, and the Italy and Greece trips.

Alumni Spotlight Anthony Cianchetta ’15 is an Audio Engineering major and Entrepreneurship minor at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. In addition to his part-time job as one of Belmont’s Event Operations Leads, he co-owns a local start-up record label, Mind Flight Records, with fellow Belmont student Marcus Vandyacht. He produces a growing number of local Nashville artists’ music. Anthony has always had a passion for music. He studied classical music at the Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore and is an accomplished pianist.

“My life has centered around music since I took up the piano at 5 years old,” says Anthony. At the age of 14, Anthony released his first on-line solo album. His goal now is to make music production his full-time career. “Now I aim to foster the creativity and success of songwriters in Nashville and, eventually, all around the world” says Anthony.

Speaking of his time at Gunston, Anthony says he loved forming relationships with the teachers and playing a part in the music program. “Some of my favorite classes were Poetry with Mr. Kaylor, Honors Writing with Mrs. Newell, and Photography with Ms. Neufeld.”

“Not only did Gunston’s academics prepare me for college-level classes, but the faculty and staff played a crucial role in making sure I was able to continue constructing my future after high school by helping with decisions about college and supporting my goals and plans.”

•In Memoriam• The Alumni Office has been notified of the passing of the following members of the Gunston Community. The faculty and staff of Gunston wish to express our deepest condolences to family and friends.

Eleanor Lee Barnes ’66, fondly known as Muffin, succumbed to glioblastoma on September 18, 2016 after a blessedly short battle. Muffin was an extraordinary student and avid equestrian. She fell in love with horses early on and maintained this passion throughout her life. In addition to being a wonderful rider, she had the innate talent of being able to teach others how to be better riders. She taught generations of children and their children, all of whom grew up learning how to ride, show and fox hunt. She loved to travel and always lived life to the fullest, doing everything in her power to empty her “bucket list” in her final year. Muffin attended Belfield School, The Gunston School for Girls, Mt. Vernon Jr. College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She worked for the Commissioner of Accounts for Albemarle County, North Carolina for 38 years.

Iola ‘Sis’ J-Wells Downes ‘71, passed away on January 5, 2017 in Shore Medical Center, Chestertown at the age of 64. “Sis” was a 1971 graduate of Gunston School and attended McQueen Gibbs School of Nursing.

She pursued a career in Elder Care, specializing in dementia patients. Sis was a breeder of Welsh Ponies and several breeds of dogs, and loved to travel.

Alexander “Les” Paternotte ‘35, died peacefully at the age of 93 in Wilmington, North Carolina on January 27, 2017. He was the oldest active Gunston alumni, sending notes and gifts to Gunston each year! Mr. Paternotte attended during his grade school years in the midst of the depression. Gunston was the source of many fond memories and where he discovered his lifelong love of horses and other animals. He shared numerous stories of life at the school, then headed by “Aunt Mary,” with his family. Les later graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown, PA and continued on to attend Princeton. His undergraduate work at Princeton was interrupted when

Anne Mickle Register ’48, passed away on April 13, 2016. Anne grew up on the Corsica River in Centreville, and went to Gunston (school and camp) in the 1940’s with Aunt Mary. Her life was filled with ponies, horses, dogs and sailboats. Gunston was a huge part of her life as a child and again in her later years when she moved to Chestertown after having lived in several other states.

On Saturday, October 1, 2016 the family of Anne Mickle Register ‘48 fulfilled Anne’s wish to have her ashes scattered on the Corsica at a private service on Gunston’s waterfront. Her family, including her daughter Candace Langan who attended Gunston from 1969-1971, gifted Gunston with a beautiful bench facing the Corsica in memory of Anne. ›››

Renee Beaumont Bohn ‘93 passed away at York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania on April 13, 2016.

Renee is survived by her ex-husband, Robert Bohn, III; her daughter, Nicole Bohn; her son, Dylan Bohn; and partner, Scott Werner, along with Hunter Werner and Kacey Werner, whom Renee loved as her own children.

he enlisted to serve in the US Army in WWII. After the war he went on to make broadcasting his lifelong career, most notably a popular DJ “Les Alexander” for WCAO in Baltimore in the ‘60s.

Emily deWaal Dryden Russell, a long-time friend of Gunston and Development Director in the 1980s passed away at the age of 82 in April 2016. Mrs. Russell and her husband, William “Bill” met at Washington College in Chestertown in the 1950s. After raising their two sons in Catonsville and Severna Park, they returned to the Eastern Shore in 1970 to spend the rest of their lives on the beloved “Shore.” Upon her return, Emily became an active member of the Episcopal parish, the local schools and numerous charitable causes, as well as winning numerous blue ribbons at the Queen Anne’s County Fair.

Waterfront Expansion

In December of 2016, Gunston’s Board of Trustees coordinated the acquisition of 3.4 acres of additional waterfront property directly adjacent to the eastern side of our campus. In addition to the land, this parcel also includes the former Middleton family residence, as well as a substantial storage facility.

As a result of this acquisition, Gunston is moving forward with the development of “Heron House”—a repurposing of the current Headmaster’s Residence. This 3,000+ sq. foot waterfront athletic and environmental facility will include a fitness/workout space for all students, team rooms, lockers, and showers, prep and conditioned storage space for athletics, provisions for environmental teaching and learning, and event facilities for waterfront academic/athletic events.

By relocating our waterfront athletes (who represent over 40% of all Gunston athletes) to the renovated Heron House, the overcrowding of the current Field House locker rooms will be substantially reduced. Heron House and the newly acquired property will also be utilized in the summer by the YMCA Camp Gunston and Horizons at Gunston School. The programs combine to serve nearly 1,000 young men and women from around the region.

Finally, the acquisition of this new property is an important footprint expansion for the school. Over the past seven years, Gunston’s enrollment has grown nearly 40%. As the school develops its longer-term strategic plan and considers future building projects, this purchase provides Gunston with much greater “footprint flexibility”, especially in the Critical Area where it is nearly impossible to expand without a currently-existing building footprint.

The Lewis Family will relocate to the new property in Summer of 2017, and over the next few months, we will keep you updated as we finalize the plans for Heron House, our goal is to have this space operational during the 2017-2018 school year. 2015-2016 Annual Report Dear Gunston Community, This school year marks my second year as the Chair of the Development Committee. What progress we have made! We exceeded our goal of $135,000 for the Heron Annual Fund by 10%, raising over $147,000 in fiscal year 2015-2016. Of equal significance, 80% of parents participated by making one or more gifts. This incredible outpouring of parent support is a true indication of our community’s support of Gunston. Thank you for joining me in donating your time and treasure to The Gunston School.

When I graduated from Gunston in 1975, I never imagined the Gunston of today. Just a small girls’ boarding school on the Corsica River, dedicated to the liberal arts, and with plenty of horseback riding, Gunston quickly became my family. Decades later, I continue to have strong ties to the Gunston community. I am fortunate to have witnessed the transformation of the campus into a stunning academic facility with an idyllic backdrop of the Corsica River.

We are now turning our attention to improving our athletic facilities by transforming the current Headmaster’s home into a modern athletic complex for all students. Our “Raise the Paddle” appeal at the 2016 Bull & Oyster Roast & Reunion kicked off our fundraising efforts for this project, raising over $34,000.

In addition, the event netted $35,000 to help cover operational costs such as field trips, faculty professional development, and scholarships. We are forever grateful to the many parents, alumni and community members who make this important event happen! Please mark your calendars now for this year’s Bull & Oyster Roast & Reunion scheduled for Saturday, October 14, 2017.

Finally, thank you to the generous foundations that contributed to our scholarship and endowment funds and helped us add resources to our Photography department. Of course, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the many important in-kind donations from our families, friends and community members.

Thank you for treasuring our school. I hope that you hold the same fond feelings I have for Gunston and that decades from now, another Gunston alum will write this letter, with an equally grateful heart.

Building a Pathway to our Future Heron Walkway Each spring prior to graduation, seniors are given a personalized brick to be placed along the entrance way and paths leading to our school.

This tradition, began in the spring of 2011, commemorates each student’s journey at Gunston and serves as a symbol of their mark on the Gunston community. Bricks are $100 each and can be purchased at gunston.org/support /heron walkway or email alumni@gunston.org.

Honorary & Memorial Gifts Personalized benches and picnic tables with an engraved plate are available for $1000.

Ways to Give Cash and Credit Card The majority of gifts to The Heron Annual Fund are in the form of cash, check, or credit card.

Gifts can be one time or you can make a pledge— for example, your $1000 gift can be paid with 12 monthly payments of $83.33. A gift of $500 can be paid in monthly installments of $41.67.

Securities Gifts of appreciated stock held for more than one year may be tax-deductible for their fair market value on the day of the gift.

Matching Gifts Many corporations will match employee charitable contributions up to two times the value of the gift. Speak with someone in your Human Resources Office to see if you company participates in the matching gift program.

Planned Gifts and Bequests A planned gift is a contract between the school and the donor that provides the school with a significant gift of cash, securities, or other assets, for which the school agrees to pay the donor a fixed amount over their lifetime.

On Saturday, October 15, over 230 parents, trustees, alumni and friends gathered on Gunston’s campus to support the school’s largest fundraiser—our annual Bull & Oyster Roast & Reunion.

The evening began with 17 teams enjoying a friendly Cornhole Tournament, while other guests mingled and tried their luck with a few raffle items and a silent auction. It was a beautiful fall evening and the sold-out event raised over $80,000. Gunston would like to extend a special thanks to our many sponsors, our faculty, staff and parents; and the 2016 Auction Committee who worked tirelessly to create a spectacular evening.
