head of school Dear Gunston Family, I will never forget the moment last spring break when the World Health Organization declared a worldwide pandemic. The school year was going smoothly — seniors were getting great news from colleges, our spring sports teams had high hopes for the season, and we admitted a remarkable new group of 9th graders into the Class of 2024. Who could have imagined the way our world would turn upside down?

During the initial pandemic response, we coined the phrase “Gunston Together” as a theme to guide our planning, and throughout this process we have remained united and strong as a community. The task of reopening our campus was enormous and complex, and it demanded everyone’s fullest effort and commitment.

At the same time, while extraordinary energy and resources have been dedicated to managing this crisis in the present moment, we’ve never lost sight of Gunston’s future — and this future is very bright indeed.

Given the scope of our current challenges, you’ll notice that this year’s Multum is more abbreviated than editions of previous years. However, you’ll also observe that this year’s Multum is optimistic and forward-looking, focusing Head of School John Lewis, wife Laurie and daughters Bea and Millie. intensely on our recent board-approved Strategic Plan, Gunston 2025 (page 8). We hope you find it compelling and inspiring. Let me also mention that we are publishing our Annual Giving Report for 18-19 and 19-20 in an online version only. The online report celebrates those who have contributed to Gunston philanthropically, and our success this year owes a great deal to those who have generously supported the school. I hope you will take time to review this report.

As I navigate my 11th year as Gunston’s Head of School, I remain inspired each day by our mission, our students, our teachers, and our diverse and dynamic programming. Gunston is truly a special place, and let me offer my gratitude to everyone who has supported the school this year.

welcome unston was delighted to welcome several new faculty and staff to the team in 2020. Will Freda teaches English and hails from Kennebunk, Maine. He attended Kenyon College where he double majored in religious studies and Italian. He recently taught literature and creative writing at St. Paul’s School, N.H. and history, literature and English language at Hebron Academy’s new China campus in Hangzhou.

Millicent Sheets is the new Math Department Chair.

Previously Ms. Sheets worked part-time at Gunston as a teacher and a lacrosse coach and had a distinguished and lengthy career at The Country School in Easton, Md. Most recently, she taught at Flint Hill School in Oakton, Va. She earned her B.A. in economics from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Carter Law serves as Gunston’s assistant athletic director, rowing coach, and science teacher. He most recently worked with Greenwich Academy in Connecticut where he was highly regarded as an educator and coach. Mr. Law is a 2017 graduate of Penn State with a degree in Agricultural Science, and has a strong background in the domains of environmental science and sustainability.

Lynda Scull serves as the new executive assistant for external relations, which includes serving as primary administrative support for the head of school, advancement, and communications offices. Scull has an extensive background in providing administrative support, office management, and overseeing operations in a multitude of industries.

Ronnie Vesnaver is the new environmental humanities teacher for the Chesapeake Watershed Semester, although this year she is teaching English and history. She spent the last five years as a residential faculty member at the Pennington School in Pennington, N.J. She is a graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine where she majored in American studies and art history. Ms. Vesnaver recently earned her master’s degree in environmental history from Rutgers University-Newark.

Fairuz Manion, MSN, RN, joined as the new school nurse/ health coordinator. Most recently, she worked for BayHealth Medical Center in Dover, Del. for more than 15 years, specializing in patient care, discharge planning, and overseeing outreach programs. She has a master’s degree in community health, and an extensive background in nursing education, serving recently as a professor at Wesley College, Wilmington University, and Ana G. Mendez University.

Juan (Cam) Camilo Angarita joined as a Spanish and English teacher. Angarita is a 2005 graduate of Gunston, where he was the winner of the school’s top honor: The Gunston Award. He earned his B.A. in government and legal studies and Latin American studies from Bowdoin College.

Marie Thomas joined Gunston as the director of external relations and is responsible for managing the external relations team, which includes communication, marketing, advancement, alumni relations, and special events. Previously, Thomas served as the director of creative services at Washington College. She earned her B.A. and M.A. at the University of Baltimore.

Two new trustees have joined the Board, including Joe Janney P’21 of Annapolis and Jill Caron P’17 of Chestertown.

Mr. Janney was a long-serving executive at Oracle, and in addition to his service on a number of educational and environmental non-profit boards, he serves on Gunston’s Chesapeake Watershed Semester Advisory Board. Ms. Caron has been a long-serving member of Gunston’s advancement committee, and she has provided dedicated leadership through her service on the Gunston Parents’ Association.

In addition, Gunston’s new board chair is Patrick Shoemaker ’03, who has served on the board since 2012. Mr. Shoemaker is a founding partner of PEAKE Technologies, a healthcare information technology services firm. Joining Mr. Shoemaker on the executive committee is Pat Parkhurst ’88 P’18 ’21 ’23 as vice chair, Megan Cook P ’22 as secretary, Mark Freestate P ’98 as treasurer, and Mara Schmittinger P ’15 as member at large.

welcome EMBARKATION CEREMONY WELCOMES

Largest Incoming Class in School History

E

very year, the Gunston School kicks off the fall semester with a special ceremony called Embarkation, where new students, faculty, and staff arrive by boat to be formally welcomed by the entire Gunston community and sign the school’s honor code. While this year’s celebration looked a little different than previous years — with a limited audience, cohorts, masks, and social distancing—it was nonetheless exciting to welcome the largest incoming class to Gunston since it first opened in 1911.

On Monday, August 31, 2020, a total of 70 new community members, which included 57 of the 60 incoming 9th graders, five 10th graders, one 11th grader, and seven staff members were divided into cohorts and arrived at the Centreville Wharf about a half hour apart.

Parents and family members were called down to the waterfront a few at a time to watch their student formally join the Gunston community. Typically, this event is held on the first day of school and is followed by convocation with the entire student body in attendance.

“A considerable amount of planning went into making sure this day could still happen,” said Mr. Lewis.

“We are so fortunate many parents and friends of the school stepped up to offer more boats this year, and the weather was just fantastic.”

A big thank you to our volunteer boat captains, Jim Watson, Joe Janney, Steve Salos, Spencer Brock, Severin Schut, Kenneth Overton, Todd Gillespie, Ed Schut, Pat Parkhurst and Ben and Henry Sheets.

After a health screening, they boarded a flotilla of boats and, in four separate “waves,” cruised down the Corsica River to meet Head of School John Lewis with a “foot tap” greeting in lieu of a handshake. From there, they were invited to sign the “Responsibilities of the Community” by Assistant Head of School Christie Grabis (pictured on the front cover) before making the trek up the

fter an extensive search by Head Sailing Coach Tom Chafey and Waterfront Director Carter Law, 18 boats from Harvard University were added to Gunston’s sailing fleet, making the trek from Cambridge, Mass. to Centreville, Md. over the course of two days.

“This expansion of the fleet will not only provide our sailors with faster, lighter equipment, but this will also make Gunston an eligible race site for varsity MDISA regattas,” explains Mr. Law. Additionally, the rowing program received generous donations from three families to upgrade the rowing fleet for training and competition.

These donations were used to purchase a coxless pair and an eight. “Both shells will make a tremendous impact come springtime when Gunston returns to the water,” he adds.

The first day of October marked the first time students and faculty/ staff had been together as a full community on campus since March 6th — 209 days!

On October 9, sponsorships and golf registrations raised just over $24,000 6

at the Golfing “fore” Gunston, the first event since graduation and the first fundraising event since the start of the pandemic. “It has cost us about $300,000 to get our campus up to scratch to be able to serve the students this year. So events like this make such a big difference,” said Head of School John Lewis.

The first ever Heron Hustle 5K/1M Virtual Run was held on November 21 & 22, with 150 participants hitting the pavement (or their treadmills) to raise $5,200 for the school and compete for fun prizes and accolades.

Participants received a limited edition Heron Hustle t-shirt designed and individually hand-pressed at Skybridge Studios by Gunston alumna Alison Hansford ’96 who volunteered her time and services.

“A huge thanks to everyone who participated — it helped to connect us virtually across the region and multiple states,” said Mr. Lewis. “We are so grateful for our event sponsors, parents, past parents and alumni who continue to support us.”

very item on this list has two important things in common. First, each has made a transformative impact on the day-to-day lives of Gunston students and teachers; and second, none has occurred accidentally. More specifically, all of these recent initiatives have resulted from a comprehensive, ongoing, and inclusive strategic process led by Gunston’s Board of Trustees. With this letter, we are delighted to formally launch Gunston 2025, our recently updated and board-ratified Strategic Plan.

While the board sets annual institutional goals, Gunston 2025 provides the school with a multi-year strategic roadmap. As you will see, the plan seeks to build upon our rich history, leverage and extend our current strengths, and respond effectively to evolving opportunities and challenges. These notions are embedded into the plan’s central vision: Gunston aims to be the region’s leading secondary school for a dynamic, student-centered educational experience, as well as a recognized national leader in environmental teaching and learning—while continuing to further our institutional capacity, agility, and resiliency.

One of the hallmarks of Gunston is the superb partnership that exists between the Board of Trustees and the school’s leadership team. In the pursuit of meaningful programming and initiatives, each supports the other in a virtuous cycle of reflective planning and effective implementation of strategic priorities.

We recognize that the beneficiaries of this partnership are the students, teachers, and the wider community. As many of you may know, Gunston recently acquired 3.5 acres of additional property adjacent to the campus, and Gunston 2025 aims to support a process for maximizing the use of that space.

To this end, let us offer special thanks to the Co-Chairs of the Gunston 2025 Committee for their superb leadership: Pat Parkhurst ’88 P ’18 ’21 ’23 —a trustee, current parent, and alumna, as well as Christie Grabis — our remarkable assistant head of school. We also want to thank every member who served on the Gunston 2025 committee for their dedication and wisdom. We hope you take the time to review this document in depth, and let us ask you to remain alert for the multitude of ways that members of our community can offer support for this vision.

A Strategic Plan I

n the spring of 2019, Gunston began its strategic planning process with Greenwich Leadership Partners (GLP), a premier consulting group that employs design thinking and focuses on globalization, innovation, and effective leadership. An interactive and inquiry-driven process, design thinking engaged the Board and Strategic Design Team (SDT) in a deep examination of the school’s mission and identity, who the school serves, what the school values and why it matters. We identified the school’s assets, measured the alignment of programs and perceptions, and defined what success would look like in 10-20 years.

The overarching goal of the process was to craft a mission centric, one-page strategy to guide Gunston’s growth, development, and sustainability as a dynamic educational institution during the next three to five years. A key element of the process involved collaboration with constituent groups in the Gunston community — employees, parents, students, alumni, and community partners, who completed an initial survey and then later participated in focus groups, engaging in thinking and visioning exercises.

The consensus of our constituents focused on five key areas: • Educational program

• Environmental teaching and learning • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion • Campus facilities • Advancement We greatly enjoyed working with a wide variety of community members, hearing about their experiences, and gaining insight into their vision of Gunston in the years ahead. It was affirming to find a high degree of congruence between the areas of strength and the areas of opportunity identified by the Board and the SDT and the constituent groups.

The comprehensive strategic process, with the input from all of the community members who took part in it, has positioned Gunston to engage deeply and effectively in the implementation of the strategic plan in the months and years ahead.

STRATEGIC CHOICE 1: Further articulate and implement the elements of “The Gunston Experience” — an intentional and “relentlessly student-centered” approach that aligns with the values, principles, and methods in Gunston’s mission and philosophy.

IMPLEMENTATION Review and revise Gunston’s schedule, with the aim of furthering a flexible, personalized, and mission-aligned educational experience.

To maximize cohorting, our classes are 75 minutes long this year. This will change in the coming year but we do know that longer classes support deeper learning, interleaving (breaks between learning, allows for recall and longer-term memories), and project-based work.

Design a structured professional development program that fosters collaboration and faculty leadership, and aligns with the key strategic priorities of EfS, DEI, MBE, SEL, and instructional technology.* Gunston launched an ambitious technology upskilling program this past spring while in emergency distance learning. The technology micro-credentialing plan laid out a pathway for faculty to complete their Google Educator Level 1 certification and craft a portfolio to demonstrate their mastery, depth, and breadth of instructional technologies. The “summer of Zoom Wednesdays’’ offered faculty the opportunity to dig in on instructional technology, supported by peer leaders and to hear from experts across a variety of disciplines, all focused on helping to craft a learning experience that supports the whole student.

Align and enhance the school’s athletics and college guidance programs consistent with our growing enrollment.

Evaluate the diversity, scope, and caliber of Gunston’s arts and athletics offerings, and develop a plan to enhance these key programmatic domains.

Invest in Gunston’s capacity to leverage technology as an essential tool for learning, innovation, and personalization.

Students have access to a variety of ways to complete assignments and assessments and teachers can similarly use a variety of tools to provide feedback and communicate with their students.

For example, Dr. Lipchock uses Flipgrid for the final exam, Señor Angarita uses Voicethread to leave verbal comments, Ms. Beck uses short videos to introduce assignments, and many others use Peardeck with social emotional learning check-ins.

STRATEGIC CHOICE 2: Expand our capacity as a regional and national leader in environmental teaching and learning.

IMPLEMENTATION Redesign our Environmental Strategic Plan with the aim of formally planning and launching the Institute for Environmental Teaching and Learning — a vehicle for organizing existing activities and furthering the research, praxis, and dissemination of Gunston’s unique approach to environmental teaching and learning.

Support the continued growth and development of the Chesapeake Watershed Semester.

Grow and deepen our efforts to develop and deliver innovative, experiential climate science education to our students and beyond.

STRATEGIC CHOICE 3: Prioritize the expansion and enhancement of the school’s advancement capacities (people, programs and systems) in order to support the student experience and ensure Gunston’s long-term financial sustainability.

TIDE (Talking about Identity, Diversity, and Equity), Gunston’s new community book club, aims to increase community engagement and discussion of topics related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Continue in our efforts to build and support an authentically diverse and inclusive community through intentional engagement, collaboration, enrollment and recruitment efforts.

Additionally, the Diversity Leaders Speaker Series has welcomed Schuyler Bailar, the first openly transgender athlete to compete in any sport on an NCAA Division I men’s team; Dr. Stephanie Dennis, educator, curriculum development expert and student advocate; and coming up in February is Chazz Woodson, one of the first Black lacrosse players in the Ivy league.

A team of Gunston students and employees attended the National Association for Independent School’s (NAIS) flagship diversity conferences, the Student Diversity Leaders Conference (SDLC), and the People of Color Conference (PoCC).

Additionally, several staff also attended NAIS’s Diversity Leadership Institute this past summer.

On Friday, June 7, 2019, the Green & White Awards Ceremony was held in the Field House. Head of School John Lewis offered a brief remark about each of the 47 seniors. The 108th Commencement of the Gunston School was held the following day with 47 students. Class President Claire Johnson delivered the opening greeting, followed by each senior presenting a favorite quote. The commencement speaker was Peter Kanelos, president of St. John’s College in Annapolis, Md. Kanelos composed his remarks around the key concepts of Confucius’ moral philosophy: the pursuit of dao (truth), the ethical system of jen (love and benevolence), The moral ideal of chun-tze (the man of high moral achievement who constantly tries to improve and cultivate himself to achieve various stages of perfection), and the wu-lun (five basic human relationships).

“1,368 days ago, we, the Class of 2019, embarked on a flotilla of boats bound for Gunston. Aboard, as we gazed into the blues of the Corsica River, Gunston meant nothing but seven white letters on a background of dark green in the distance. When we alighted from the boats and stepped onto the dock, we were oblivious to what lie ahead of us, and we could never imagine that we were to spend the next four years of our youth in a magical place, a place where we would forge deep friendships with classmates and teachers, where we would explore our raison d’êtres, and where we would transform from the innocent freshmen into the confident young adults that we are today.

Four years ago, no one fell into the Corsica River during embarkation. Four years later, we are still, fortunately, intact and whole. Yet, one thing has changed: a collective experience has brought us closer together, and stronger together.

We remember because of the blood, sweat, and tears that we shed shaped who we are today. Just look at how much we’ve achieved throughout our high school careers. Class of 2019—today is the day to proclaim proudly—We did it!”

The Gunston School honored its class of 2020 with a week-long celebration, beginning with seniors and their families arriving individually to campus to partake in the annual tradition of laying a brick engraved with their name and graduation year on the pathway leading up to Middleton House, followed by a diploma parade, and concluding with a virtual commencement ceremony featuring an Emmy-award winning alumna.

On Friday, June 5, the virtual Green & White Awards ceremony announced 26 different awards for students as well as the much-anticipated announcement of the Green & White Cup (White Team!). The second field day (Spring 2020) was canceled due to the pandemic, so students and faculty were able to accumulate points by doing various social media challenges, volunteering, and completing assignments.

Senior Class President Isabella (Izzy) Santoboni announced the senior class gift to the World Health Organization’s COVID Solidarity Response Fund. “Our donation is a way of giving the class of 2020 a voice: in a situation in which we feel so powerless, this donation is a way for us to be a part of the solution.” In addition, the 2019-2020 school year marked several milestones for faculty, including 35 years of service for Assistant Head of School Christie Grabis, and ten years of service for Head of School John Lewis.

Later in the day on Friday, a procession of vehicles with seniors and their families made its way down the circular drive on Gunston’s campus for a Diploma Parade, waving to faculty and staff lining the road before receiving their diplomas from Lewis. The rest of the Gunston Community watched the event live via Gunston’s YouTube Channel.

In keeping with tradition, Saturday’s virtual commencement began with bagpiper Robert Wallace and was followed by several speakers.

Highlights include remarks from Senior Class President Isabella Santoboni, Chair of the Board of Gunston’s Trustees Jim Wright, and Middleton Award (Valedictorian) winner William Newberg. Newberg reflected on what he began to miss the most during quarantine.

“I remember when I first learned that we weren’t going back to campus this semester. My mind went immediately to the big events left in the year—Green and White Day, prom, junior/senior day—it seemed obvious to mourn the big events before all else. But eventually, as daily life in quarantine began to sink in, I realized I wasn’t exactly right and I began to miss all the little things about Gunston.”

Newberg described the little things as sitting with his friends in the Atrium and walking through campus on a beautiful spring day on his way to class. “Not only had I not recognized the small experiences throughout the day that made life better, but I wasn’t taking full advantage of them either. [...] I can’t tell you how many times I walked to my classes and didn't notice how beautiful campus was because I was stressed about something that, in hindsight, wasn’t important. As both a graduate and having lost this last quarter to the Coronavirus, I can say that all of these little moments matter. Take advantage of them while you have the chance.”

Gunston alumna Rita Baghdadi, class of 2003, gave the commencement address. Baghdadi graduated summa cum laude with a degree in film from Columbia College Chicago before starting her career in international film sales in Los Angeles. In addition to running her own company, Baghdadi is a member of Free The Bid, Brown Girls Doc Mafia, Film Fatales and the ICFC : International Collective of Female Cinematographers. Recently, Rita was hired to produce and direct City Rising. The film earned three Emmy awards including Best Social Issue Film.

be possible. Gunston parent Torrey Pocock, owner of Riggo Productions, in Annapolis, Md. stepped in to help. Dean of Students Mark Wiening served as the chair of the graduation committee, spending hundreds of hours working with Mr. Pocock, scheduling video shoots, organizing students and employees, communicating with parents, and managing the myriad of details that went into the celebration. All of the videos were pre-recorded in the month leading up to graduation and streamed live. Filming took place over the course of about 11 days and 175 hours, both on location at Gunston and at Riggo Pro’s studio. Mr. Pocock and 11 crew members spent an additional 241 hours of editing to produce 92 student tribute and senior quote videos; 30 Green & White Award videos; the diploma printing process with

Mr. Kaylor; a 1.5 hour live stream with drone footage for the diploma parade; and a two hour live stream pre-produced commencement show with six speakers (although that number is seven, if you include the bagpiper).

“For the class of 2020, the Coronavirus stole their traditional graduation ceremony. However, Gunston did an incredible job,” said GPA President Karen Talbott, P ’20 & ’23. “This was a graduation experience that we will never forget. Every detail was so well planned, from the pictures and videos that we were able to share with family and friends, to the thoughtfulness of the parting gifts, awards, and diploma parade! We are so proud and honored to be a part of the Gunston community.”

Jen Matthews (née Anthony) and husband Sean welcomed their first child Felix Anthony Matthews in October, 2019. Jen graduated from St. Mary’s College in 2009 with a B.A. in theatre. She is the director of development and alumni relations for the Kent School in Chestertown, Md.

Olivia Wood recently presented a talk about her work on the Poplar Grove Project for RiverArts Salon in Chestertown.

Olivia grew up on a farm adjacent to Polar Grove and is the 11th generation of her family to live on the land. In 2008, she was part of a team that excavated, organized, interpreted and archived the Poplar Grove papers. Wood resides in Washington D.C., and has worked in the art museum world since 2011.

Erica Young received a master’s degree in organizational psychology from University of Maryland Baltimore County.

She lives and works in Alexandria, Va.

Kathleen Hurd (née Wootton) joined the Board of Directors for Chesapeake Bank and Trust last fall. Kathleen is a partner at Rasin, Wootton & Hurd, LLC, where she practices real estate, estate planning,estate administration, and small business law. She is a 2009 cum laude graduate of James Madison University, where she majored in organizational communication and minored in human resources. She went on to attend University of Baltimore School of Law, and graduated magna cum laude in 2011.

2008 Caitlin Heuler (née McLean) graduated from Towson University in 2012 and went on to earn a graduate degree in library and information science from San Jose State University in 2018.

Married in 2017, Caitlin and her husband welcomed a baby girl, Wednesday Moira-Angela in November of 2019.

Heuler is currently working as a stayat-home mom and part time doing search engine optimization with plans to become a children’s librarian.

Talley Wilford is the founding executive director of the Groove Theatre Company in Cambridge, Md. He served on the board of the Tred Avon Players for five years since graduating with a bachelor of fine arts in theatre for youth from Shenandoah Conservatory.

2009 & 2010 Patrick Gillespie ’09 and Maria Gillespie (née Cusimano) ’10 were married on October 17, 2020. Patrick asked Maria to compete in a green and white day canoe race circa 2008. They won the race and the rest is history! Go white team!

Elizabeth Davis graduated cum laude from Frostburg State University in 2019 with a degree in health science and a minor in biology. Pre-pandemic, Elizabeth traveled to South Africa with KIDS, a dental pro-bono group, helping children in Soweto, Johannesburg, and Cabo Verde. She is currently in the process of applying to dental schools.

Sophie Cooper is attending Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.

Marisa Pisapia finished her first year at Salisbury University, making the dean’s list for both fall and spring semesters and joining the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and the Phi Eta Sigma honor society.

She is a double major, in political science and Spanish with a minor in law, justice, and advocacy.

2015 Abi Johnson graduated from Washington College in spring 2020.

2016 Kailani Clarke graduated from Washington College in spring 2020 with a degree in environmental studies and a minor in creative writing. She was one of the finalists for the Sophie Kerr Prize and is currently a freelance writer as well as a stable hand at Worthmore Equestrian Center in Worton, Md.

Jason Staley completed hiking the Appalachian trail in October. He is now working at Mammoth Mountain ski resort.

2018 Susie Fordi, a junior at The New School of Journalism and Design in New York City, spent the summer as a fellow working on journalistic photography, writing, audio and social media for The Kent Pilot in Chestertown.

Haorui (Davy) Song finished a three-semester music theory series for his music major at Emory University, culminating in a composition of Ash Grove Variations.

Alumni Spotlight: Annabelle (Bellie) Camp (née Fichtner) ’15

What was your journey after you graduated from Gunston?

My journey after graduation was not linear. I started college at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where I intended to study apparel design. I was incredibly prepared for the fine arts courses at RISD, thanks to Mr. Dize. However, I missed having a diverse course load. That eventually led me to studying art conservation at University of Delaware, one of only two undergraduate programs in art conservation in the United States. The subject is inherently interdisciplinary. It is fundamentally a third chemistry, a third fine art, and a third material culture studies (art history or anthropology).

As soon as I started the major, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue as a career. It is necessary to have a master’s to be a practicing conservator, and you must have hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of experience working in a conservation lab before applying to a program. During my undergraduate career, I gained experience at the Peabody Museum at Harvard, the Arizona State Museum, and the paintings, textile, and photograph conservation labs at the Winterthur Museum. I had amazing opportunities to work on collections from all over the world, and was accepted to the Winterthur/UD program right after my senior year. I had just enough time in the summer for a wedding and honeymoon!

What are your ultimate career goals?

I intend to work as a conservator in a museum immediately after graduation, but hope to eventually open a private conservation practice.

Annabelle (Bellie) Camp (née Fichtner) '15 is a Conservation Fellow in the Winterthur/University of Delaware (UD) Program in Art Conservation, a threeyear program jointly sponsored by the two institutions.

Bellie will graduate in 2022 with an M.S. in textile conservation. She also received her B.A. from UD in anthropology and art conservation with a minor in art history. She is married to fellow Gunston alum Andy Camp '15, who recently graduated from the Naval Academy. They were married on June 8, 2019 in a small ceremony at the Fichtner’s home in Easton, Md. 22

Any particular experiences at Gunston that helped to facilitate this journey?

I took part in a lot of extracurricular activities at Gunston, which—when combined with a long commute and challenging classes—really helped me hone my skills in time management.

Working as Ms. Gruss’s intern and as the yearbook editor also helped me develop valuable communication skills.

Josef Evangeline Eynck of Queenstown, Md. passed away on August 9, 2020 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Josef was born on November 16, 1994 to David and Jeanette Eynck. He was 25 years old. Josef leaves behind his five siblings Ian, Rosemary, Lillian, Elias, and Elena as well as his cousins, aunts and uncles. Josef graduated from Flagler College with a Bachelor’s Degree in business with a concentration in law.

He graduated from The Gunston School in 2013 where he forged lifelong friendships with faculty and students alike.

“Joe was a vivid personality — the kind of unforgettable Gunston character who loved his friends, entertained (and sometimes exasperated) his teachers, threw his heart and soul into Green and White Day, tossed lacrosse balls in front of AB with his teammates in the middle of winter, hung on the porch with a ready smile and warm hello, and who generally made coming to school each day a little more fun for everyone. We mourn with his parents Dave and Jeanette and his sisters and brother, including Rose, who attended Gunston as well.”

n our ongoing effort to promote sustainability (by using less paper) and to ensure current and accurate donor lists, we have moved Gunston’s list of donors online. The pandemic put Multum in Parvo on hiatus in 2020, therefore the online list will cover two fiscal years, July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019 and July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020.

Thank you to the entire Gunston community for your support and continued generosity. Every gift to the annual fund, every sponsorship of a special event, or purchase of a ticket, auction item and more, all helps support the key elements of the Gunston experience: great teaching, high-quality facilities, dynamic arts and athletics, Bay Studies, diversity programming, student social events, and so much more.

Highlights In the 2018-2019 fiscal year, $172,500 was raised for the Heron Fund with an additional $100,000 from the Bull & Oyster Roast. During the 2019-2020 fiscal year, $205,100 was generously donated to the Heron Fund with $80,000 raised at the Bull & Oyster Roast. In 2019, James Clauson P ’06 ’07, past parent and trustee emeritus was named as an honoree at the Leadership and Loyalty reception, which recognizes someone who, through their patronage, has helped shape the school and its mission.

The 2019 Bull & Oyster Roast welcomed nearly 240 parents, trustees, alumni, faculty, and friends on Gunston’s campus to support the school. Guests mingled, enjoyed shucked oysters, and tried their luck on silent auction items that were generously donated by local businesses and Gunston families.
