Messages from Rotary Club Presidents Centreville Rotary Club Are you motivated by a desire to help others? Would you enjoy a weekly meal and friendly conversation? Would you enjoy

learning more about your local community through weekly presentations from a diverse group of community leaders?

If you answered “yes” to any one of these questions you should join us for a weekly Rotary meeting. The Centreville Rotary Club meets every Thursday morning from 7:30-8:30 am at the Centreville Methodist Church and guests are always welcome to attend to learn more.

Centreville Rotarians are also members of Rotary International, which has 1.2 million members with 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries around the world. Our work as Rotarians is inspired by the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” All Rotarians have a strong commitment to humanitarian efforts that help improve the lives of those in need in both our local communities and across the globe.

Rotary is also an apolitical organization so our members put aside their politics and focus on efforts that bind us together in service to others.

This year the Centreville Rotary Club will provide financial support to several local initiatives including: scholarships to local high school seniors, free monthly books to preschool children through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a free summer campership for a disabled or special needs child to Camp Fairlee, free dictionaries to third graders, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, holiday food baskets to local seniors, and support for Rotary House for families of domestic violence. Internationally the Centreville supports Wells in Ghana, Shelter Box and Worldwide Eradication of Polio.

Rotary Club of Kent Island Rotary is about service and integrity. We are dedicated to doing good in our community and in the world.

In fact, our motto is service above self. We end each of our meetings by asking four essential questions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Is it beneficial to all concerned? These four essential questions are the backbone of what Rotary is all about. We are fortunate to have two hard working Rotary Clubs in Queen Anne’s County Each of Rotary’s 1.2 million members across the world have answered the call to service and ethical business practices within their own communities. Here on Kent Island, that call to service has been extensive. We have honored our veterans for their services with a Flags for Heroes display during Memorial Day Weekend. Our members volunteer to help with the Bay Bridge Run, we have contributed to scholarship funds, and sponsor an Interact Club. Through a grant with the Centreville Rotary Club, we helped fund the Judy Center’s work with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to give free books to every child under the age of 5 in Queen Anne’s county.

Our club sponsors Kent Island High School students to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards during President’s Day Weekend in Ocean City. We give dictionaries to third graders. We sponsor summer camperships for individuals with disabilities and special needs to attend Easter Seals Camp Fairlee in Chestertown. In the spring, our members volunteer to help get the Camp Fairlee ready for those campers we sponsor and others. Our members help Haven Ministries. Our club members donate countless volunteer hours to local organizations throughout Queen Anne’s County. We are dedicated to ending Polio in all parts of the world.

We gather every Tuesday, 7:30 a.m., at the Chesapeake Inn. We would love for you to join us to find out more about what we do. If you have a community service project that you think we could help with, contact us.

Why Join Rotary?

O

ur world is richly blessed with hundreds of thousands of volunteer-based organizations, whether clubs, charities, public policy NGOs or simply self-starter informal groups of individuals with a common purpose and cause to improve the lives of others. But in an international context, few of these groups compare with Rotary International, with its 1.3 million members in over 200 countries. What is unique to Rotary is its focus on the most needy and desperate needs of our respective communities as well as a variety of youth programs and projects. Rather than a single project, such as the Rotary campaign to eradicate polio in the last three remaining countries currently having outbreaks, the organization is also providing Shelter Boxes where nature or war have forced families out of their homes, or providing free health clinics staffed by Rotary volunteers.

Being a part of these many efforts provides great meaning and humility to Rotarians. Founded on the precept of “Service Above Self,” all of Rotary’s projects focus on the needs of others rather than the needs of the organization. The opportunity to be a Rotarian and experience community service “hands-on” is appealing to business and service professionals from all walks of life. Rotary is one of the most demographically diverse organizations in the world, its doors open to all who wish to share their time and treasure with those who need it the most.

Becoming a member of Centreville Rotary Club or Kent Island Rotary Club (and thus Rotary International) is a fairly simple process. By contacting a current member, one will be invited to attend several meetings of the club, learning about our programs in Queen Anne’s County and RI projects globally. This is then followed by an invitation to join from a current member and, following endorsement by the board and membership, the next step is to be inducted into the organization.

Our Rotary Clubs currently have over 75 members from a wide range of occupations and vocations. It has been said many times by visiting Rotarians and Rotary leaders that the Rotary Clubs in Queen Anne’s County are involved in more projects and outreach than many clubs with two or three times the membership. This is a reflection of the strong commitment to service by the current members, as well as the willingness to continually seek new ways of serving the needs of others.

Consider being a working partner in these worthwhile endeavors by attending one of our meetings. The Centreville Club meets every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at Centreville United Methodist Church, and the Kent Island Club meets every Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at the Inn at Chesapeake Bay Beach Club. Centreville & Kent Island Rotary Clubs’ Joint Projects Our Focus on Local Youth: Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Rotary Youth Leadership Award (R.Y.L.A.) is an annual weekend leadership training retreat for high school students. It focuses on teamwork, speaking skills, community service, ethical behavior and program planning. The group is exposed to professional speakers in various fields. Attendees participate in proposing solutions to social and community problems. This includes developing hypothetical plans for raising the necessary funds and planning programs for addressing such problems. In recent years the event has been held at the Carousel Hotel in Ocean City in mid February.

Rotary clubs from throughout the Rotary District of Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore sponsor students from their local areas. During that period, a total of thirty-six students from local public and private high schools have participated. Students who express interest in attending RYLA are interviewed by a Rotary club selection committee. Selection is based on school and community involvement plus demonstrated interest in being of service to others. The value of this program is evident by unsolicited comments from our local students after they have returned from the event. For example: • “I would rather have this RYLA experience than a college scholarship in any amount because I know it will help me for the rest of my life.”

• “This was the most worthwhile thing I have ever done.”

• “I know that wherever my future takes me, the (Rotary) Service Above Self motto will inspire me to better the lives of those around me and in all parts of the world.”

The continued support of local citizens for our several fundraising efforts helps make this and other youth support programs possible.

Our Annual Dictionary Project A favorite project of both the Kent Island and Centreville Rotary Clubs every year is our annual Youth Dictionary Giveaway. Continuing a long standing tradition begun by the Centreville Club in 2005, each club personally distributes a new child-friendly dictionary to every 3rd grade student in Queen Anne’s County. This includes the following elementary schools: Kennard, Matapeake, Bayside, Grasonville, Church Hill and Sudlersville.

The books are always enthusiastically received by each aspiring student who are also given a brief presentation by the visiting Rotarians. The students and teachers alike truly appreciate the gesture and the short event is warmly anticipated every school year.

Many of the children are so excited to receive their “very own dictionary.” We often hear from them later when the club receives thank you notes in the form of a card or letter. They include many cute and inspiring stories of how they have used their dictionary so far.

The dictionaries are more than just a resource for word definitions and spelling; they contain fun facts about astronomy, history and many other topics that are written in a manner that is interesting to young minds.

As you can imagine, distributing over six hundred books to six different schools is quite an undertaking but a strong teamwork ethic and a desire to improve our youth are just a couple of the “Service Above Self ” traits common among all Rotarians.

Centreville Rotary Club 2016-17 Community Activities Centreville Rotary Inducts New Officers for 2016-17 & New Members This past June the Centreville Rotary inducted its new officers for 2016-17 at an evening event held at Gunston School, Centreville, MD. The 2016-17 Officers inducted to serve were: President – John Walden, Director, Queen Anne’s County Free Library; Vice President – Leigh Darrell Dillon, QAC State’s Attorney Office; Treasurer – Lee Wright, Brent Carroll, CPA; Secretary – Justin Smith, Merrill Lynch; and the Board of Directors – Christine Perkins, Karen Marshall, Henry Brandt, Carol Williamson, and Lamonte Cooke.

As last year’s outgoing President, Chris Perkins said, “Last year (2015-16) was very interesting,” especially with the establishment of a new Rotary International Club on Kent Island. In one fell swoop the number of Rotary Clubs in Queen Anne’s was doubled and, as it turns out, so was the total number of members to over 70.

The Centreville Rotary and the Kent Island Rotary Club are planning to grow. The Rotary is founded on the precept of “Service Above Self ”, which for an individual means focusing on the needs of others rather than the needs of one’s company or organization to contribute to the community. The opportunity to become a Rotarian is a quite simple process. Please contact a current member (they are all over the community) and be invited to attend several morning meetings (or come and attend), learning about our programs in QAC and globally.

Rotary Scholars This past summer was the occasion for Centreville Rotary Club’s recognition and presentation of scholarship awards to several graduating seniors from Queen Anne’s County High School, Kent Island High School and Gunston School. This eventful day has been happening for over 20 years and has resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship support to more than 200 students in our community.

This year’s recipients were chosen by a special committee of Centreville Rotary Club and were selected from among more than 25 applicants from our three high schools.

The scholarships are merit based, using such criteria as academic performance over their four years of high school, community involvement, school activities, work experience and leadership contributions.

The committee also considers the applicant’s involvement in the school’s Rotary Interact Chapter, a community service organization for high school students sponsored by Rotary International and our local clubs. Of this year’s awardees,

most were active in their school’s Interact Club, some for their entire four years of high school.

These students have been accepted by and will be attending a range of institutions, from area schools such as Chesapeake College, Salisbury University and Goucher, to larger schools, including University of Alabama, Wake Forest University, Florida Institute of Technology and Clemson University.

Funds to make these scholarships possible come from the proceeds of multiple fundraising projects of Centreville Rotary Club. To the extent events and projects such as Artisans’ Festival, Flags for Heroes, sporting clays shoot and others generate greater participation by our community, the club is then able to base its awards on increased net revenues from these projects. While there are many of our high school graduates deserving of scholarship support and who don’t receive an award, it is the commitment of Centreville Rotary Club to continually strive to increase our funds available for scholarships and allow an increasing number of our students to benefit as they launch their college studies.

Centreville Rotary Club’s Artisan’s Festival Celebrates 45 Years Centreville Rotary has been holding the Artisan’s Festival the first weekend in October since 1972. We are excited to announce that the 2017 Artisan’s Festival will be moving to Chesapeake College and will take place October 7 and 8, 2017. Admission & parking is FREE for the Festival, but donations are accepted at the gate with ALL proceeds from this annual fundraiser going to: • Support local youth scholarships continued on next page

• Operate a regional shelter for victims of domestic

violence • Participate in the rotary worldwide project to eradicate polio • Lifetime Wells for Ghana, a clean water project in Africa • Other local charities This past fall, the 45th Annual Artisan’s Festival event was held on October 1st and 2nd, 2016. Our 2016 Festival hosted 70 artists from throughout the Delmarva Peninsula to exhibit their wide range of talents and treasures. Included were original offerings of paintings, pottery, basketry, stained glass, wood carving, jewelry, photography and much more. Always an attraction for families is the Children’s Corner (funfilled activities for children) with pumpkin decorating, face painting, scarecrow making, train and hay wagon rides.

Centreville Rotary is proud of this cultural tradition in our county and highly values the many friendships nurtured through the interaction at this event. We feel strongly the exposure to the arts and crafts for children and youth contribute to the importance of this festival. This year, we hope to see you at Chesapeake College on October 7th and 8th!

Centreville Rotary Raffle In early May, the Centreville Rotary Club will sponsor its annual raffle. Raffle tickets are available by contacting any favorite Centreville Rotarian! The raffle features two grand prizes: a weekend at a beautiful Ocean City oceanfront condo unit, and a brand new 12-gauge Beretta shotgun. The gun may be seen at Centreville’s Western Auto location in the weeks prior to the shoot.

Shelter Boxes: Bringing Instant Relief to Natural Disaster Victims Whether it’s a natural disaster—fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, cyclones, earthquakes, floods—or a disaster caused by humans, such as wars, there are human lives impacted in ways that cry out for help. ShelterBox, started by Rotarians

in England but now worldwide, is designed to sustain human lives in the midst of such disasters by delivering the essentials a family needs to survive in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Each green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items. In addition to complete ShelterBox kits, there is also the capability to provide disaster-specific needs for equipment such as tents, building repair materials and tools.

In addition to distributing transitional housing resources, ShelterBox also provides SchoolBoxes with educational materials to mitigate disruption in education as teachers continue working with students while communities are rebuilt. ShelterBox works with a variety of implementing partners and fellow relief organizations to ensure necessary aid including medical care, food assistance, and permanent housing is included in recovery initiatives.

Last year a devastating hurricane hit Haiti, Cuba and the east coast of the U.S.A. The damage to parts of Haiti was particularly severe. Hurricane Matthew was the worst storm to make landfall in Haiti for more than 50 years. The Haitian government reported that more than 1.4 million people were affected by the hurricane, including almost 600,000 children. At least 175,500 people have been displaced and more than 200,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged.

ShelterBox had limited stocks of aid supplies in Haiti when Matthew hit, but immediately began transporting aid to the country from stocks nearby. However, the need for shelter far outstripped its supplies. A call to donors was issued to make sure that the draw-down on the worldwide supplies to help Haiti would not leave the organization unable to respond to disasters elsewhere, such as the conflict in Syria.

Since conflict first broke out in Syria six years ago, more than 10 million people have been displaced with four million seeking refuge in other countries. ShelterBox is working with implementing partners including Hand in Hand for Syria to distribute needed aid, including shelter kits, tents, mosquito nets, water filters, water carriers, blankets, groundsheets, SchoolBoxes, and solar lamps.

In recent years, the Centreville Rotary has funded one Shelter Box with a donation of $1,000 from the proceeds of our various projects. Worldwide, contributions from Rotarians and other supporters have enabled over 40,000 such boxes to be delivered to disaster sites. The cost of each unit, including transportation, is approximately $1,000.

Rotary of Kent Island 2016–17 Community Activities Casino Night One of our club’s favorite fundraisers is our annual Casino Night. Last year, we raised money to help fund our service projects throughout the year. Proceeds from last year’s casino night went right back into the community.

Our club members were given a crash course by fellow member Gary Logue, in the art of the deal. We offered table games such as Black Jack and Roulette. There was also a silent auction of items donated by the community. We put the FUN in fundraiser with this one! Our 2017 Casino Night will be held on Saturday, September 30 at the Kent Island Elks Club.

The Bay Bridge Run Our members and members from The Centreville Club volunteered to help with parking during The Bay Bridge Run. We had people at the High School, the VIP Parking area, and the handicapped parking area. We helped to coordinate buses for the trip back over the Bay Bridge when they finished the race. Some of our members, including President Elect Bill Caughey, also ran in it!

Flags for Heroes We honored our community heroes for the service they have given to this country and to this community with our

Memorial Day Weekend display of flags for veterans. The display was at Exit 40B right along Route 50.

For us, this type of service to the community is a way of saying thank you to those who have sacrificed so much to keep this great country of ours free. Each flag was sponsored by an individual or business in the community in honor of an individual or individuals, who have served.

Every time we do this event, we have people stop by to thank us for taking the time to thank those who served.

Some even stay to help put up and take down the flags. We feel honored and privileged to be able to give back to those who have given so much. The prevention and resolution of conflicts and the promotion of peace are part of Rotary’s six areas of focus.

Interact Club We sponsor an Interact Club at Kent Island High School.

Interact is a service organization for high school students.

Our Interact Club is extremely active. Through Interact, we sponsor service and leadership development in youth at Kent Island High School.

Second Saturday Socials

Rotary Club of Kent Island honors community heroes with its Memorial Day Weekend display of flags. Contact us to be a 2017 flag sponsor (KIRotary.org).

Chesapeake Bay Business Park in Stevensville and had a game night at the Chesterwye Center, Inc. Upcoming events include shooting clays at Pintail, the Naptown BarBayQ, the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, attending the Lion King in Baltimore, and much, much more! Come join us to have fun while doing good in the world.

Our Speakers During our regular meetings, we have speakers talk to our group about their organizations and projects. We have had Cliff Hutton, the Rotary District Governor for all of Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore, talk to us about his vision of Rotary in our District. We have had local business leaders talk to us like Lilly Bengfort of Blackwater Distilling and Carrie Simmons of the Inn at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club. We have had the leaders of local non-profits speak to us like Ed Modell of the Sudlersville Community Laundromat Project and Elizabeth Miller of the Judy Center, Judy Wink of the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center, and many, many more.

Rotary Leadership Institute Rotary Leadership Institute or RLI is a chance for our members to develop leadership skills while learning more about Rotary as an organization. Our club reimburses members who attend RLI, because we believe that it is vital to develop leadership skills that can be used in the club and in the community. It is a great opportunity to network with Rotarians from other clubs throughout Maryland and Delaware. One of our members, PDG Jen Reider is a regular instructor for RLI in the District. Community development is one of Rotary’s six areas of focus.

The Judy Center and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Our club along with the Centreville Rotary Club sponsors a grant to help the Judy Center give every child under the age of 5 in Queen Anne’s County books through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Children who register for the program are sent a new book each month. Basic Education and Literacy is one of Rotary’s six areas of focus.

Kent Island Tales and Tastes First off while this book includes recipes, it is not a cookbook. It is a collection of the history and culture of Kent Island told and collected by those who lived it. This book covers everything from how to make dandelion wine to the history of the Bay Bridge. It also includes a complete guide and walking tour for the downtown historic district in Stevensville. Copies are available for $10 each (see ad for ordering details). All proceeds are used to fund our projects throughout the year.

Our Charter Night While we are a fairly new club, Rotary is not new to Kent Island. After an absence of seven years, Rotary returned to Kent Island last year. We officially received our charter from Rotary International on November 10, 2015 and celebrated with then Rotary District Governor Rob Hemmen. We have 39 members and are gaining new members all of the time.

22 Chesapeake Heritage & Visitor Center (CHVC)

helps visitors discover the many sights to see in Queen Anne’s County and beyond. The center features a rotating exhibit that features local artists. The CHVC also has an exhibit dedicated to the history, heritage, culture of the area. Located adjacent to the property is Ferry Point Park.

14 Church Hill Park—This lovely park includes lighted

playing fields, playground with shaded equipment, a concession stand, restrooms, pavilion and an approximately 2-mile paved walking trail.

21 Conquest Beach—A 750 acre farm is situated

a few miles north of Centreville. The scenic Chester

River provides a beautiful and tranquil setting for special occasions and events. A 6-acre site offers a beach front, pavilion, picnic area with grill, bath houses with rest rooms, wheelchair accessible restroom, ball field, horseshoe pits, and a volley ball court. Rental of this site is by reservation only.

1 Crumpton Park—Located on Dudley Corners

Road in Crumpton, this park provides a picnic area, playground equipment and ball field.

5 Ewing Pond Park—Located on Main Street next to

the Grasonville Elementary School, Ewing Pond Park has a walking trail, gazebo, and fishing pier that extends into the pond.

7 Grasonville Park—Located at 301 Perry’s Corner

Road, Grasonville Park offers a child’s picnic and playground area, volleyball court, two ball fields, tennis and basketball courts. This park is home to the Leonard Smith Trail, a 1/3-mile walking trail.

17 Kent Island Dog Park—Located at 200 White Pine

Lane, Stevensville boasts a fenced area for small dogs and one for large dogs with dog agility equipment where dogs are allowed to run free.

4 Long Point Park—Located on Rt. 50 and Jackson

Creek Road in Grasonville, this park offers a 1/3-mile trail through flower gardens and a pond. Park benches offer a restful spot to watch children enjoy the dinosaur playground equipment.

27 Matapeake Clubhouse and Beach—This

picturesque venue has a view of the Chesapeake Bay and public beach. A one-mile trail through the woods leads to the dog friendly beach area. The Matapeake Clubhouse is operated by The Smokehouse Grill and available to rent for weddings, meetings and other events. Call 410-6431060 for information on pricing and availability.

2 Mowbray Park—Known as the county’s first park

and located on Rt. 8 South, this park in­cludes lighted tennis courts, athletic fields, pavilion, playground, restrooms, and picnic area in the 13.5 acre park.

12 Old Love Point Park—One of the County’s most

utilized parks, this 30-acre site on Old Love Point Road in Stevensville includes lighted basketball courts, athletic fields, tennis courts, a playground, concession stand with restrooms, 2 lighted fields and 2 championship sand volleyball courts.

3 Pinkney Park—Lighted basketball courts, athletic

fields, a playground, pavilion and picnic areas are prime attractions of this 12.5-acre park located on Route 290 near Pondtown.

8 Roosevelt Park—In Queen Anne on Park

Avenue, this 7.5 acre park has a paved walking trail, pavilion, baseball field, volleyball court and playground equipment.

6 Round Top Park—Just west of Chester Harbor on

Roundtop Road, this 110-acre facility has athletic fields,

13 Route 18 Park—Two lighted ball fields, a 1.5-mile

paved walking trail with fitness stations and relaxation areas, and dozens of picturesque trees highlight this 52acre facility located on 4-H Park Road near Centreville.

It offers multi-purpose athletic fields, a concession stand with restrooms and a playground.

10 Sudlersville Park—Located on Route 300 in

Sudlersville, this park boasts multi-purpose athletic fields, tennis courts, basketball courts and a sand volleyball court. A paved fitness trail, playground equipment and pavilion are also there for your enjoyment.

15 Whitemarsh Park—Located on Rt 213 north of

Centreville is a 318-acre park with multi-purpose athletic fields, baseball fields, grass trail, pond for fishing and preserved nature areas.

TOWN OF CENTREVILLE PARKS 31 Millstream Park — Comprising 26+ acres, this

park contains two full playgrounds with swing sets, a basketball court, a multi-purpose, handicapped-accessible picnic pavilion for family, groups, entertainment and available for one-day rental, comfort stations, and a kayak/canoe soft launch area.

Millstream Park Trail — Exercise along the 1.5mile paved Millstream Trail, which goes from South Liberty Street to Creamery Lane and back with nature observation decks along the trail. The park includes tidal and upland interfaces so visitors can enjoy the marshes and wetland life and the upland natural wood buffers.

Centreville Wharf — (Under construction; available late 2017). Soon to be the crown jewel of the Centreville Park System, Wharf Park is under construction today.

Covering 2.4+ acres of prime Corsica River navigable water frontage, this park contains a playground area for young children, pavilion for a picnic, kayak/canoe ramp accessible for launching with a full length bulkhead and boardwalk serving 10 rental slip holders and transient docking areas and handicapped accessible restroom facilities. Other opportunities at the Wharf include Bigbies Shore Performance and CD Outdoors. Design plans include a band shell/multi-use pavilion, picnic shelters, and expanded playground and perimeter walks that tie to the Millstream Trail System. Matapeake Fishing Pier and Ramp 1112 Romancoke Rd, Stevensville Highlighting this facility are the 650 foot lighted fishing pier and the 25-foot-wide boat ramp. The ramp and pier are open 24 hours a day year round giving the avid fisherman ample opportunity to catch the tide, fish at night, first light or all day long. The facility has restrooms and a picnic area with grills. Picnic area is open dawn to dusk; pier and ramp are open 24 hours. $10.00 per car parking fee for access to pier, ramp and picnic area.

Exceptions to entrance fee include holders of Queen Anne’s County Public Landings Permit or a Queen Anne’s County Slip Renter Tag (for use of the ramp only) or the Maryland State Golden Age Pass.

QAC Public Landing Regulations January 1, 2017 – December 31, 2017 • At all landings a current permit must be displayed by every vehicle, with or without a trailer, for either the launching of a boat or for general parking.

• Annual permits are valid only when displayed on the driver’s side of either the boat trailer tongue or the vehicle rear bumper. For special or unique circumstances contact Public Landings office.

• Daily permits are valid only when displayed on the windshield facing out.

• Commercial permits are available from Public Landings office.

• Launching at landings without a ramp is limited to canoes, kayaks, and car-top boats.

• At Matapeake boat ramp and Romancoke kayak launch area, landing permits are valid for boat launching only. Use of the fishing piers requires a separate entrance fee of $10.

Warehouse Creek Landing Great Neck Road, Stevensville At the end of Great Neck Road, this 0.1-acre facility provides access to Warehouse Creek to enjoying nature, fishing or crabbing. Year-Round Nature Adventures at Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center Located in Grasonville off Perry Corner Road on a 510-acre peninsula, the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC) invites you to experience firsthand the rich biodiversity of the Chesapeake Bay. Operated by the Wildfowl Trust of North America, Inc., since 1979, CBEC is home to over 200 species of birds, including large populations of migratory waterfowl.

Over four miles of hiking trails that include observation towers, bird blinds and boardwalks allow visitors to observe wildlife in their native wetland and forest habitats found within the Bay. The Raptor Mews provide an outstanding opportunity to photograph birds of prey.

CBEC offers a wide range of “hands-on, feet-wet” environmental education opportunities for children and adults, such as preschool Creepy Crawler program, Critters and Cocktails Speaker Series, Legacy Institute for the Environment Program (LIFE), and the Maryland Master Naturalist Program.

The Center’s Arts and Education building, with its main hall and kitchen facilities, is available to rent for weddings, parties, business meetings, and other group activities.

CBEC has much to offer the water enthusiast!

With an ideal location on a peninsula, they offer visitors kayak rentals to glide around Marshy Creek, the Narrows and Prospect Bay viewing wading birds, waterfowl and acres of marsh and restored shoreline.

The Center is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated.

Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC). CBEC has over four miles of hiking trails.

35 Cross Island Trail. This tree-lined linear park

offers a safe avenue for non-vehicular transportation.

The trail is 6.5 miles long, spanning east to west from Terrapin Park to the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center at Kent Narrows, with future plans for expansion. The trail wanders through farmlands, meadows and woods accented with ornamental trees. Flanked by park benches, the trail crosses several creeks with wooden bridges, offering a spectacular view of waterfowl and wetlands. Portable toilets are available year round.

34 Kent Island South Trail. A 6 mile hiker/biker

trail extends from Matapeake Park to Romancoke along Rt. 8 South. It travels through wooded areas and next to farm fields over wooden bridges with views of the bay.

19 Terrapin Park/Nature Trail. This award-

winning 276-acre nature park features a 3.25-mile oyster chaff walking trail, which meanders through wildflower meadows, wetlands, tidal ponds, woodlands and sandy beaches. A gazebo and wheelchair-accessible boardwalk, located along the beach, afford a spectacular view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The trail, which wanders over several bridges, across marshlands and through woodlands, features two observation blinds overlooking the tidal ponds. The trail connects to the Cross Island Trail. Portable toilets are available year round.

Just off the Trail . . .

By Martha Lostrom Just about 500 feet away from Terrapin Park biking and walking trails is Blackwater Distilling at 184 Log Canoe Circle. As the first craft distillery in Maryland in more than 40 years, those over 21 can test taste from four rums, four vodkas and two whiskeys. The libations contain no food color or artificial ingredients and pressed sugar cane juice is distilled to make the line of Picaroon Maryland rums.

Andy Keller, distiller at Blackwater Distilling is open Blackwater, keeps the seven days a week from 12 to barrels rolling.

5 p.m. with tours on the hour at 12, 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. open to all ages. The educational tour covers the history of distillation and stories about the products.

Hunting and Fishing in QAC Embraced by miles of scenic Chesapeake Bay waterways, Queen Anne’s County offers a great variety of saltwater and freshwater fishing experiences. Charter boats are available throughout the area. Anglers can hook striped bass, largemouth bass, sea trout, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, black drum, Atlantic croaker, white perch, yellow perch, crappie, pickerel, channel catfish, bluegill and more. Let a local captain take you to where the fish are biting! Queen Anne’s County also offers the best in hunting. Kent Island Water Trails Kent Island Water Trailways Guide was developed through a partnership between Maryland DNR and Queen Anne’s County. The trails provide a wide variety of paddling experiences so there are options for all levels of expertise. While the detailed trails range in length from 1.25 to 3.6 miles, the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay, Chester River, Eastern Bay and Prospect Bay offer endless opportunities for more experienced paddlers. Below are two of the six trails featured in the guide. Pick up a copy of the full guide at the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center at 425 Piney Narrows Road, Chester.

Eastern Bay Trail Distance: Approximately 3 miles Difficulty: This water trail should only be attempted by experience paddlers. For an easy to moderate alternative, stay in the confines of the Shipping Creek Cove.

Thompson Creek Trail Distance: Approximately 3.6 miles Difficulty: The full route of this water trail should only be attempted by experience paddlers. For an easier alternative, launch at either Thompson Creek or Warehouse Creek and stay in the narrower, more sheltered shoreline areas

Walking Tour of Downtown Stevensville Created the Kent Island Historical Society, this easy strolling tour of downtown Stevensville will give you a little history of this small town.

Stevensville sits on land called Stevens Adventure, a 1694 grant to Francis Stevens. The town developed after the 1850 sale of two farms by James and Charles Stevens, descendants of Francis Stevens.

Stevensville’s development benefited from the steamboat-based trade system that linked the eastern and western shores in the mid-19th century. The railroad came to Stevensville in 1902, and by 1909 the town had two schools, four doctors, a blacksmith and a sawmill.

The end of passenger rail service by 1938 and the freight line in 1948 halted growth of the town.

1 The Dunn Home. The home of Charles G. “Gil” and

Florence Dunn was built in 1910–12 for George Holland, a cannery owner. Former owners were John M. Ruth and John Daniel. Gil Dunn was a pharmacist for more than 40 years at the Kent Island Shopping Center.

2 Kent Island Federation of Art. The house was

built ca. 1900 for Dr. William L. Henry, his wife and their two sons. The entrance to his office can be seen from the enclosed front porch. Currently home of the Kent Island Federation of Art, which exhibits work by artists and craftsmen.

Thomas bought this house on Locust Street in 1887 from David Jones, owner and builder. In 1904 the property was sold to Mary Ringgold and Thomas Ringgold Price.

7 Capt. Jim Ed Jones Home. Captain James Edward

Jones and his wife, Sarah Carroll, built a prior house here in 1880 that was destroyed by fire. The present house was built in 1882. It has been in the Carroll family since that time.

An 1877 map identifies it as parsonage for the First Methodist Protestant Church, which rented it until a new parsonage was built next to the church (see Site 20). A Mr. Beitzel was an early shopkeeper. Dr. John R. Benton bought the property, separated and moved a portion of the building to land now occupied by the adjacent office building. Thomas Carroll was the merchant here for many years, followed by Rose Baxter Weston and her son, James Richard Weston.

11 Christ Church and Rectory. Built in 1880, this

18 Old Stevensville Post Office. The construction data of this building is not known, but it appears on an 1877 map and served as the Stevensville Post Office for the first half of the 20th century. The government paid rent of $18.75 a month and the outlandish sum of $25 a year to heat the structure. It was acquired in 1997 by The Kent Island Heritage Society.

19 Stevensville Bank. The Stevensville Bank of Queen

is the oldest church on Kent Island. It is the fifth church of this Christ Church parish founded in 1631, and is the oldest continuous Episcopal congregation in the United States. Previous church buildings were in nearby Broad Creek, one of the first towns established in Maryland. The church is a superb example of the Queen Anne style of ecclesiastical architecture. The church is on the National Register of Historic Places.

John Tolson built this general store that was later operated by Fred Thomas. First known as the American Store, the name was later changed to Acme Market. Julius Grollman, a local merchant in the early 1900s, worked in the store as a young man, earning $15 a week. The building was later used as a post office from 1952 until 1975.

Anne’s County, built ca. 1903-07, opened for business in 1909.

It is the oldest bank building on Kent Island and one of the oldest in the county. The façade’s classical architectural details, combined with the pressed tin ceiling and intact furnishings and vault, helped place it on the National Register of Historic Places.

13 The Jennie Legg Dry Goods Store. In 1809 John Denny purchased from J. Stevens the lot on which this structure and the adjacent Cray House sit. It is believed that he constructed this building shortly after Cray House, which would make this the second oldest building in Stevensville.

20 Methodist Protectant Church and Par-

14 Cray House. This is the oldest house in Stevensville.

John Denny purchased this lot from J. Stevens in 1809 and constructed both this house and the adjacent structure (see site 14). A ship’s carpenter, Denny used an unusual post and plank construction method in which walls are formed by tenoning horizontal planks into mortices (slots) cut into vertical corner posts. The south portion of the house was added around 1842

by Mary E. Carville Legg. After a series of owners, it was sold at public auction in 1914 to Nora Cray, a widow who lived there with her three children. Her heirs deeded the property to The Kent Island Heritage Society in 1976. This house is on the National Register of Historic Places.

15 Stevensville Train Station. In 1894 the Maryland Legislature gave approval to Queen Anne’s Railroad Company to build an east-west railroad across Delmarva, connecting Queenstown with Lewes, Delaware. In 1902, the route was extended 13 miles to Love Point, and provided employment and excitement to Kent Island. The abandoned terminal building was donated to The Kent Island Heritage Society. It was moved to its present site in 1988 and restored to its 1902 appearance.

16 The Country Store. The corner building was constructed ca. 1900 as a grocery store and owner’s residence

by Everett Cook and Eugene Herbert. The original German siding—now covered by vinyl—was probably salvaged from the Johnstown Flood of 1889.

17 Home of Dr. C. Percy Kemp/Dr. J.E.H. Lewis.

Built ca. 1880-90 for Dr. J.E.H. Lewis. The first occupant was probably Ann Kemp, widow of Thomas Kemp. She later married her landlord, Dr. Lewis. Her son, C. Percy Kemp made this his home after becoming a physician. He also used Dr. Lewis’s adjacent former office, which no longer exists.

sonage. In 1851 Charles and Mary Ann Stevens sold the land to the Chesapeake Lodge #59 of the Order of Odd Fellows for one cent. In 1864 the Lodge sold it to the trustees of the Methodist Protestant Church, John Jeffers, Charles Downes, James Denny, William C. Gibson, Franklin Bright, M.G. Goodhand and C.G.L. Porter. No longer used as a church, it was purchased by William E. Denny III, who restored the structure and its marvelous stained-glass windows—a number of which are dedicated to the memory of members of his family.

21 Lowery Hotel. Built about 1860 for J. Reuben Jeffers.

The 1877 map shows it was a boarding house rented to Alexander Lowery of Coxe’s Neck. He later bought the property and opened it as a hotel in November of 1883. Alterations and additions were made to meet the needs of the many overnight travelers coming from the Matapeake, Broad Creek and Love Point ferry landings. A livery stable provided transportation.

Meals were 25 cents. Fountain and Florence Lowery Jackson continued the business for several years after Mrs. Lowery’s death. It remained in the Lowery family until the heirs sold it in 1935.

22 H. Goodhand Hotel. Known as the H. Goodhand

Hotel on the 1877 map, it was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Emory Skinner around the end of the 19th century. Then called Skinner’s Boarding House, it offered room and board to salesmen and other travelers. The house was later owned by Roland and Lolita Bright Carvel.

23 Price House. Built in 1915 for owners and first oc-

cupants P. Thomas and Augusta Legg Price. One of the largest houses in town, it has a unique cupola on top that was used during World War II as a lookout for enemy planes. Volunteers manned the post, connected by telephone to a communications center. The house remained in the Price family for many years.

State Parks in Queen Anne’s County Tuckahoe State Park Tuckahoe Creek, a quiet country stream bordered for most of its length by wooded marshlands, runs through the length of Tuckahoe State Park. A 60-acre lake offers boating and fishing. The park offers 20 miles of scenic hiking, biking and equestrian trails, flat water canoeing, hunting, picnicking, as well as a recycled tire playground for children. The park also offers activities and special events on a seasonal basis. Activities include day camps, canoe trips, Scales & Tales presentations and displays, and Challenge Course programs.

The park’s flooded woodlands are home to many birds, turtles and mammals. Eagles and osprey are routinely viewed flying overhead, and silent paddlers often observe otter, beaver and muskrat. The park has canoes, kayaks and paddleboats for rent or you can bring your own.

1-888-432-2267 Wye Mills Lake At 50 acres in size, Wye Mills Lake is among the largest impoundments on the Eastern Shore. Maximum depth is 8 ft, and the average is 4 ft. The upper third of the lake is quite shallow with gradual drop-offs, while the lower two thirds of the lake has steeper banks with sharp dropoffs. The lower two thirds of Wye Mills Lake consists of outstanding fish habitat. There are many downed trees and undercut roots on the shorelines. Aquatic vegetation is widespread during the summer months. Additionally, several fish attractors have been placed along the concrete dam breast to provide fishing opportunities from shore.

Unicorn Lake Unicorn Lake is located on the Unicorn Branch, a tributary to the Chester River, one mile south of the town of Millington. The lake has existed for more than 100 years, formed when a dam was constructed for a woolen mill sometime around 1860. In 1961 the lake and surrounding grounds were purchased by the State of Maryland for the

sum of one dollar. The lake is managed as a largemouth bass and bluegill fishery. Quality fishing for both of these species exists within the lake. Anglers may occasionally catch other species including: chain pickerel, pumpkinseed sunfish, green sunfish, channel catfish, brown bullhead catfish, black crappie, yellow perch, white perch, American eel and creek chubsucker. Other fish species that are found in the lake include: margined madtom, eastern mud minnow, pirate perch and blacknose dace.

Wye Island NRMA Wye Island NRMA is located in the tidal recesses of the Chesapeake Bay between the Wye River and the Wye East River. Wildlife viewing and hiking are the most popular activities on Wye Island’s six miles of trails. The School House Woods Nature Trail takes you through a mature hardwood forest while the Ferry Landing Trail leads beneath a canopy of Osage Orange Trees. Wye Island also houses a Holly Tree that is more than 290 years old. Follow the Holly Tree Trail to visit this long-time resident.

The topography of the island is relatively flat. From the novice to the advanced hiker, access to the trails is very easy from the main park road. The Maryland Park Service does not rent horses, and only provides the trails as a means of recreation. nrma.wyeisland@maryland.gov Hunting is available at Wye Island NRMA for both Canada Goose and White Tailed Deer through managed hunts and lotteries. The white tailed deer population is specially managed through a hunting program that includes limited hunting days for Shotgun and Muzzleloader through a lottery program. Archery hunting is permitted on a posted schedule with a limited number of hunters each day. These hunts help to maintain the ecological balance between the whitetail deer herd and their habitat. Re-create & Re-energize Yourself with Diet AND Exercise

By Leslie Sandoz, ACE Certified In-Home Fitness Professional and a Member of Rotary of Kent Island Queen Anne’s County is home to some of the nicest, flattest, most scenic, navigable paths and trails in our gorgeous state of Maryland. We hope you get out and enjoy the beauty of QAC, while energizing yourself via exercise.

We all know that when you arrive home from work there is more work to be done: meal prep, grocery shopping, house cleaning, lawn mowing. How do you find the energy for all of this AND get to the gym, sports, the recreational activities that others seem to find so doable? Believe it or not: it is inside you! Allow me to be a very quick tour guide to the energy within you. It starts with adenosine triphosphate (ATP). It is a high-energy phosphate molecule required to provide energy for cellular function. In other words, it is your power source, and you already have it in your muscle cells. So, how do you tap it? You don’t have to get off the couch yet, just stay seated for a moment, and allow me to give a whirlwind, over-simplified tour of your busy body.

The ATP already in your cells requires the food calories you take in and count (or don’t count like bologna, beer and ice cream) to synthesize and make (metabolize) more energy. Your body stores a minimal amount of ATP within your muscle cells, but the majority is synthesized from the foods you eat. When you eat poor quality (or too much food for your energy needs), the extra “energy” gets stored as fat. This excess fat weighs you down and, therefore, slows you down. You need some nutritional fat for cell reproduction, but too much fat finds places to “hide” in your arteries, veins, and all-too-unwelcome bellies.

This can lead to all kinds of disease (note: dis-ease) and chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, gallstones, sleep apnea, lung complications, some cancers, obesity among others.

Here is the most important point: because we do not store a significant amount of ATP, our body needs a continuous supply and gets resynthesized with the foods we eat. This happens via three pathways:

phosphagen, anaerobic and aerobic. We metabolize this energy with movement. As a trainer, I encourage clients to research the foods they eat. By “googling” the “nutritional value” of foods they like, the client can see how these foods play such a vital role in their overall health and daily functioning. When we sustain ourselves with less than optimal nutrition, we run dry and feel sluggish. Without getting into metabolism and how movement can alter this pre-set, this short explanation of ATP, the power source already in our body, seeks to explain how your body finds its energy.

And with this knowledge coupled with a stimulating walk, run, or bike ride on some of the gorgeous scenic trails in Queen Anne’s County, you can re-create yourself and find a more energetic you.
