AN INTERVIEW WITH PLAYWRIGHT

BRENT ASKARI

What inspired you to write this play? Share the origins of the idea and how it developed. Were there any specific challenges or breakthrough moments during the writing process? I am the product of a biracial marriage: my father is a Shiite Muslim from Iran; my mother an Episcopalian WASP from New England. Growing up, I saw a lot of my father’s family coming over to the United States after fleeing the regime in Iran. At some point, I wondered…what if it had been my mother’s family fleeing New England and ending up in the Middle East? To flesh out this imagined scenario, I invented a civil war in the United States, something which at the time felt like a wild idea; unfortunately, the potential threat of political violence in our country has increased, making the backstory of the play seem more and more plausible – it’s scary to see reality tiptoeing towards what was once my wildest imagination.

The Refugees touches on many relevant themes, topics, and cultural issues. What draws you to tackle those ideas in your work? I don’t tend to start plays from the level of theme – I like for themes to emerge and to present themselves during the process of writing. I think I’m subconsciously drawing on the world and cultural issues and incorporating them into my plays; it’s only as I start re-writing that I actually learn what I’m wrestling with in telling a particular story.

How closely did you work with the director during the New Works Festival? Were there any collaborative moments that significantly influenced the production? Marshall and I worked very closely together during two appearances at the New Works Festival! There were really too many collaborative moments to mention -- he has been an extremely helpful soundboard and provided valuable feedback throughout the entire process. I’m excited and honored to be collaborating with him once again on this World Premiere.

Are there any unique elements in the script or production that you're particularly excited about? I’m thrilled to be working with some fantastic actors who have previously workshopped the play along with several wonderful new additions! I’m also excited, after seeing the play read at music stands, to finally see it come to life with sets, lights, sound, costumes, and all the other technical elements.

How does it feel to have your play presented as a world premiere? Like my birthday and Christmas together.

What is one thing you hope the audience takes away from the show? I try to avoid having a didactic message that I want to impart on the audience. While this play deals with some cultural and political issues, I don’t have specific ideologies or policies that I’m trying to push. I’d be happy if people walk away from this play with more feelings of empathy, humility, and connection. 21

Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) was founded in 1913 as the first of the American Actor unions. Equity’s mission is to advance, promote and foster the art of theatre as an essential component of our society. Today, Equity represents more than 40,000 actors, singers, dancers and stage managers working in hundreds of theatres across the United States. Equity members are dedicated to working in the theatre as a profession, upholding the highest artistic standards. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions and provides a wide range of benefits including health and pension plans for its members. Through its agreement with Equity, this theatre has committed to the fair treatment of the actors and stage managers employed in this production. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. For more information, visit www.actorsequity.org.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE Back in the previous century when I was a young college student studying theatre at Rutgers University, a professor proclaimed: “the function of the artist is to hold a mirror to reflect society.” Consider how the works of William Shakespeare routinely juxtaposes the wisdom of fools against the folly of kings. Or, how the great leader Nelson Mandela credited the plays of Athol Fugard with helping to dismantle apartheid by sharing compelling stories about the plight of South Africans with the world. And, sometimes a work of art comes along that is so meaningful it not only reflects the current state of society but also provides a glimpse into the future -- which brings us to The Refugees, a powerfully astute play written by Brent Askari. The script, which Mr. Askari completed a first draft of in December 2019, utilizes satire and humor to address a very real and present danger about the fragility of democracy. Upon first reading the script, my initial thought was: if I read this on or before January 5, 2021, it’s a middling take on American democracy. However, reading The Refugees on or after January 7, 2021, provides a whole new – and frightening – context. The Refugees is a seminal play that cleverly places the shoe on the other foot with regards to the multiple complex issues regarding living in refugee status. It was clearly evident in both of our workshops at the New Works Festival, that the Gulfshore audiences immediately identified with the Sutton family. We are ready to shed the music stands of stage reading in order for this enormously talented cast to effusively embody the well-costumed and engaging characters in a fully produced show that encompasses a dazzling scenic design, mood-inducing lighting, along with a soothing original score. Through the use of satire, it is our belief that experiencing this show, audiences will grasp a greater understanding of the issues facing refugees and migrants. Recently, the UN Refugee Agency declared that there are 108.4 million refugees worldwide resulting from persecution, conflict, violence, or human rights violations. For context, that equates to the combined population of our 8 most populous states – California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, and Georgia. However, the United Nation reported 30 years ago, the total refugees were 45 million (approximately the population of California and Wisconsin). It is hoped that this show will inspire audiences to do their part to protect the rights of the only race that counts – the human race.

Coming Soon

by George Brant directed by Marshall Jones III The year is 1942 and World War II has called millions away to Europe, including the leading players of Oberon Play House. Enter a group of passionate, albeit inexperienced, band of actresses who seize the chance to move from the sidelines to centerstage. For the first time, they will receive pay for their talents as they mount an ambitious production of Shakespeare’s Henry IV Parts 1 & 2 and Henry V. Will their performance be a victory on the home front or a disaster of epic proportions? This sweet, hilarious, and heartwarming play celebrates the power of art to rally a community and see us through the darkest of times. These women will steal the spotlight and your heart!
