A Letter from the Founder
Dear Friends,
It is with bittersweet feelings that I welcome you to the very last Gulfshore Playhouse production at the Norris Center. While we are overjoyed about our impending move into the Baker Theatre and Education Center, which will include two theatres, huge rehearsal and education spaces, a beautiful, spacious lobby, and lush gardens, in order to look to the future we must remember to look to the past. Eighteen years ago, in 2006, Jennifer Fox, then manager of the Norris Center, allowed me to produce a play called Oleanna starring Tony® nominee Alan Campbell. At that time, the Norris Center was more assembly hall than theatre, with white walls and ceiling, carpet in the lobby, no curtains over the windows and no lights on stage. Our production ran for three days. It took several years before we were allowed to mount a three-show season, and eventually to call the Norris Center our home. We will be forever indebted to Jennifer Fox for always saying yes. Without her support, and that of the City of Naples, in allowing us to rent this facility, we would not be where we are today. There are not a lot of venue spaces available in Naples, and we wouldn't have been able to expand, grow, produce an ever-increasing number of shows, or build our conservatory programs the way that we have otherwise. I hope another young theatre company comes along and is able to bloom and flourish as we have thanks to this theatre space. It has served us, and you, well, and it is with a tear in my eye that I will watch the lights go out for the last time.
However, that time is not here yet. Right now, we have before you the gorgeous, delightful, funny, and frothy musical She Loves Me. This is the largest show we have ever mounted on this stage! While it reminds us why we're glad we're building a huge theatre with lots of wing space and fly space and room for sets, backdrops, lighting, and more, we have not in any way skimped on this lush, endearing classic. I don't actually know why this musical isn't more well-known and more beloved. To me, it's like a mini My Fair Lady, which you all loved when we staged it in 2016, so I have no doubt you will enjoy this as much if not more, as this cast will absolutely blow you away!
Even though the ghost light may be going out on our mainstage season at the Norris Center, our students aren't done here by a long shot. You can support our Conservatory teen actors as they perform the hilarious play Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic from May 11-16. Following that, we have a whole summer of educational programming planned, including productions of Willy Wonka, JR. and Seussical JR. for students aged 8-18.
Our inaugural season in the Baker will feature spectacular shows on two different stages, featuring a wide variety of genres and styles. Flex Passes are on sale, and you should make sure you act fast! Seats are selling like hotcakes, and if you want to secure yours, I promise that now is the best time to do it.
Thank you for being here. The Board of Directors and the Staff of Gulfshore Playhouse join me in thanking you for your enduring support both in our past, our present, and in our bright future at the Baker Theatre and Education Center. We couldn't have done it without you.
With deepest gratitude,
Kristen Coury Founder

She Loves Me is not your average musical comedy. As I write this note, sitting in rehearsal while the marvelous Dann Dunn choreographs "12 Days to Christmas" I am filled with glee that tomorrow we will finish blocking the show and begin the real fun of honing, smoothing, and tweaking - polishing the raw stone into a beautiful, brilliant gem. This is the part I love. Simultaneously, I am, and have been, forever cognizant of the deep theatrical history of this show. At times, it felt like a very heavy responsibility, as I wanted to make sure that my efforts did this magnificent piece justice.
While the musical was penned by Harnick, Bock, and Masteroff in 1963, as Audrey Zielenbach mentions in her dramaturgical note, the original Hungarian play was written in 1937. Furthermore, it was master-of-thestage Harold Prince's theatrical debut as a director. So we have here a rich, detailed script that, in many ways, is reminiscent of the wonderful play from which it came, and the fun, frothy, and thoroughly delightful songs that demonstrate exactly the best tenets of the American musical theatre.
I'm so glad you're here. Dann told me that the last time he choreographed this show, he only choreographed three numbers: "Christmas", "Romantic Atmosphere", and "Ilona". My penchant for dance has made it so that dance somehow shows up in pretty much every number! Mr. Prince's quote above points to the fact that when this play was created, it was during a very difficult time in Hungarian history, and, yet, despite its dark history, the story here is presented as a sugary sweet confection. This cast, our biggest ever, is truly stellar and each number is a show-stopper of its own. Altogether, this is a recipe for a very delightful musical soup that will leave you smiling, singing, and dancing your way out of the theatre, and make it so our swan song in the Norris Center is a show you won't forget!
Thank you for being here today and for all the ways in which you've supported our art over the past 20 years. We couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the show!
Kristen Coury CEO & Producing Artistic Director

Dramaturgical Note
A Romantic Atmosphere
She Loves Me , an often overlooked musical, holds a unique charm. It debuted on Broadway on April 23, 1963. Despite the praise it received – The New York Times chief critic Howard Taubman described it as a “bonbon” that “should delight who knows how many a sweet tooth,” – it had a short run, closing after just four months. Yet, this fleeting production has managed to transcend time, find new life, and leave behind a lasting legacy.
In 1937, Hungarian playwright Miklós László wrote the play Illatszerar, better known as Parfumerie. As charming as the source material and content is, life in 1930s Budapest was anything but. After World War I, the Treaty of Trianon dissolved the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Hungary lost 66% of its territory and half its population. Not long after, the Great Depression buckled the nation’s economy. Unemployment in Hungary hit 36% in 1933, compared to 24% in the United States at the same time. László himself worked a variety of jobs, from candy maker to salesman to clerk to laborer. These economic hardships pushed Hungary into an eventual alliance with Hitler and the Axis Powers. László, who came from a Jewish family, emigrated to New York City in 1937 and spent the remainder of his life there.
In 1940, László’s play became the foundation for the iconic Ernst Lubitsch film The Shop Around the Corner , starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. Lubitsch’s films made some adjustments to the original story, the most significant of which was making the epistolary romance the center of the story.
mundanity and harshness, making it enduringly relevant and relatable.
