2024-2025 Season Brochure

Welcome to the 2024–2025 Season!

Dear Friends,

It is with utmost joy and gratitude that I get to say: Welcome to the 2024-2025 season at Gulfshore Playhouse, our inaugural season at the Baker Theatre and Education Center! Finally, our grand dream is no longer in the future tense, it’s right before us in glorious, vibrant reality.

Before I get into all the exciting offerings coming your way in this auspicious year of years, I would be remiss not to take this opportunity to give you a little glimpse behind the curtain of just what a momentous feat this opening is. I hope the passion, dedication, diligence, and fastidiousness of literally hundreds of people is evident in every second of your experience.

Generous donors, loyal patrons, and a first-rate Board of Directors made this dream a reality. Countless staff members over the past decade have contributed their expertise to making it as exceptional as possible. Consultants, architects, and construction workers turned it from lines on a page into this striking facility we will call home. The City of Naples acknowledged the fact that a community benefits when the arts flourish and partnered with us by constructing a public parking garage right across the street. The building, of course, has a physical foundation, but its true bedrock lies in the hearts, minds, and hands of those who made it happen.

While opening this building is the culmination of a lot of blood, sweat and even some tears, it is, most importantly, a new beginning. We now have two venues: the Moran Mainstage and the Struthers Studio, in addition to a wing dedicated to our educational programs. We will be able to provide a wide variety of programming to ensure you are getting the best in arts and education.

In the Mainstage, we have four incredible productions lined up. Launching the season in November is the classic toe-tapping musical, Anything Goes. For a year I've been saying “Once we’re in the Baker, Anything Goes!” I’m thrilled to be directing this Broadway-sized spectacular! Full of dazzling dancing, and songs we know and love, this is the perfect way to kick off our inaugural season and a tiding of all good things to come. In the winter of 2025, you will see a fresh adaptation of a Hitchcockian classic, Dial “M” for Murder. We’re thrilled to bring the outrageous, timeless comedy, Noises Off, to life. Wrapping up our debut season is Sweet Charity. With a hilarious book by Neil Simon, this musical is a cherry on top of what will be a very memorable theatrical cake.

2

In the Studio, you will experience three different stage configurations for three thought-provoking productions. First up, Every Brilliant Thing, an uplifting and interactive one-man show where you, the audience, will help tell the story. Next, we’ll be producing one of the most popular plays in America, The Lehman Trilogy, highlighting three generations of that infamous American dynasty. Finally, we’ll transform the theatre into an atmospheric jazz club for Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, a jukebox musical about songstress Billie Holiday. You’ll even be able to get a drink at the bar right inside the theatre.

You may have noticed our facility is called the Baker Theatre and Education Center. To my knowledge, there isn’t another regional theatre that shares this moniker. As the name indicates, education is a true priority for us, demonstrated by our upcoming slate of new and continuing theatre education programs for people of all ages. We'll continue our community work through ArtReach, teach content curriculum in schools using theatre arts through ThinkTheatre, and nurture theatre artists through the Conservatory. We look forward to creating new opportunities on our own campus, like expanding adult programming to connect you with a community of arts lovers and learn from theatre professionals. Be sure to check out those offerings in this brochure and on our website.

This is the start of a new era and I’m so excited for you to be a vital part of it. I can’t wait to see you at the new theatre!

With sincere gratitude,

3

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Patty & Jay Baker

Inscribed in the walls of London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral is an epitaph for its architect, Christopher Wren, that reads, Si monumentum requiris, circumspice; meaning,

“If you seek a monument, look around.”

The Baker name is one of Naples’ most recognizable. Over the years, Patty and Jay Baker have made an indelible mark on our community. As Wren is to London, the Bakers are to Naples: all you have to do is look around to see their legacy.

You’ll see it at the hospital, the senior center, the humane society, and the art museum, just to name a few. It is not an exaggeration to say they have helped shape Naples into the community it is today. Gulfshore Playhouse can certainly attest to just how much their impact can move the needle, as as they have most definitely altered the course of our history.

The Bakers intimately understand the importance of theatre to both the individual and the community. Patty has been involved in theatre since she studied it at Hunter College in Manhattan, where she majored in directing! Prior to moving to Naples, she served on the board of directors at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, where the Patty & Jay Baker Theatre Complex is named in their honor.

Today, the Bakers are still actively involved in regional theatre. Patty previously served on the board of Manhattan’s Public Theatre and currently sits on the board of Bay Street Theatre in the Hamptons.

“We like to say two things: We like to lay eggs where we nest and we want to live our legacy rather than leave it behind.”

Since moving to Naples in 2000, Patty has become a Broadway producer, earning two Tony Awards® for Memphis: The Musical and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? She has produced numerous other shows including: To Kill a Mockingbird and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, among many others, and has invested in Hamilton, Moulin Rouge, and so many more.

Therefore, it was kismet that the Bakers crossed paths with Founder Kristen Coury in the early years of the theatre’s existence, recognized the potential of a world-class professional theatre in Naples, and supported Kristen's dream of building a Tony Award®winning state-of-the-art professional theatre. Kristen often tells the story that during the intermission of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike in January 2015, Patty came up to Kristen and handed her a dollar bill. Kristen asked if she wanted a bottle of water and Patty laughed and said no. Kristen asked, “Well, then what is this for?” And Patty said, “It's a down payment."

Later that year, the Bakers graciously agreed to donate a transformational $10 million matching gift that launched a capital campaign to raise funds for the new theatre that now bears their name. Since then, Patty and Jay have become our biggest champions, actively participating in every step along the way. From Patty joining the Board of Directors, participating in architect selection and design approval, to even turning earth at

the groundbreaking, they have been tireless supporters. They renewed their support with a surprise additional $10 million matching gift in 2021. Our community of donors stepped up to the challenge, surpassing the match within six weeks.

The Baker Theatre and Education Center is a reflection of their deep passion for the performing arts, their belief in Gulfshore Playhouse, and their commitment to this community.

“It’s from the heart…You give because you believe in a project, and you believe it’s going to make a difference in other people’s lives,”

From offering an audience the direct experience of witnessing and participating in live theatre, to the ripple effects of the arts’ proven impact on the local economy and cultural life, a world-class theatre can make a difference in people’s lives. The Bakers donated so generously to make this theatre possible because they, like Christopher Wren, understood that building the building is only the beginning.
