A L e tt er from th e Foun der Dear Friends, I am overjoyed to present Into the Breeches! written

by George Brant and directed by the amazing Jackson Gay. Although we select our productions over a year in advance, it always feels like they arrive at just the right moment. This one is an uplifting and heartfelt story that tackles so many themes and is, ultimately, a love letter to theatre itself. It feels apt that it will be our second-to-last production on this stage before we move into the Baker Theatre and Education Center for our 2024-2025 season.

Excitement is certainly building for the new theater, and I'm just as thrilled as everyone else! Yet, let's not forget to appreciate the wonderful experiences we have right here at the Norris Center in these final months. There's so much to look forward to!

Our final mainstage Norris Center production, She Loves Me, opens March 23rd and runs through April 21st. Directed by yours truly, this “vanilla ice cream” musical is a confection of heart, humor, memorable songs, and musical theatre delight. It will be the perfect swan song to our years spent at the Norris Center as we transform this stage one last time into something magical.

After that, you can support our Conservatory teen actors as they perform the hilarious play Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic from May 11-16th. Following that, we have a whole summer of educational programming planned, including productions of Willy Wonka, JR. and Seussical JR. for students aged 8-18.

We are announcing the inaugural season in the Baker Theatre and Education Center soon. In fact, by the time you read this, it will likely have already been announced.

Our inaugural season in the Baker will feature spectacular shows on two different stages, featuring a wide variety of genres and styles. Flex Passes go on sale to the general public on February 20th and you should make sure you act fast! Seats are filling up, and if you want to secure yours, I promise that now is the best time to do it.

Into the Breeches is a love letter to the theater. It is a celebration of the theater's unique ability to employ a limitless imagination to tell compelling universal stories about what it means to be a human being.

Into the Breeches dramatizes how good art can bring people of different beliefs and backgrounds together to work towards a common goal. And it instructs us on how to have a lot of fun along the way.

In our modern world we sometimes find ourselves at war with each other. Because of our contemporary socio-political context, we forget to celebrate what we all have in common--our deep desire for community, love of family, our love of country, the importance of laughing together and supporting each other in hard times. We forget the importance of coming together inside a dark theater as a community to experience the magical rejuvenating power of good storytelling.

It has been a joy to work with this beautiful company of actors and with everyone at Gulfshore Playhouse. It's been artistically and personally meaningful to get to work on a play that not only makes you laugh but also restores your faith in the power of working together - because of and despite any differences. A unified effort makes any victory all the sweeter.

Into the Breeches, as Maggie says in the play, "...does not speak of tragedy, but of patriotism, sacrifice, victory! And that victory shall linger..!"

"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our English dead!"

This iconic line, cleverly punned by playwright George Brant in the title of today’s play, comes from Shakespeare’s Henry V. Set during the events surrounding the Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Years’ War, this enduring and oft-quoted historical epic is frequently brought to mind in times of war. In fact, a 1944 film version directed by and starring Laurence Olivier was intended to be a morale booster for the British people.

During times of global tension, fear, and uncertainty, creating art may feel unimportant. However, for thousands of years, theatre has not only survived historical hardship, it has again and again proven its importance and enduring relevance to our lives. This was one of the many inspirations behind Into the Breeches! which premiered at Trinity Repertory Theatre in 2018.

Set on the homefront in fall 1942, the United States had only been officially involved in the war against the Axis Powers for less than a year. A staggering 11% of the country’s population served in the military. With an unprecedented number called away to the frontlines and a drastic need to increase war production, quick and massive social changes swept the country.

Brant read through wartime diaries, sweethearts’ correspondence, African American poetry, and the historical homefront efforts to create the world of the play. The war effort changed not just the country at large, but also each individual who lived through it.

Day-to-day life was impacted by government-sponsored campaigns, causing communities to rally together. A rationing system meant every person received minimum amounts of necessities. “Victory Gardens” in backyards, vacant lots, and public parks produced over 1 billion tons of food. Household fat was saved and used to manufacture glycerine, clothes were repaired rather than replaced, and “War Nurseries” assisted mothers who were needed in the workplace.

While many of these activities reflected the best of humanity, the period was not without its challenges.

Suddenly, women and racially marginalized people were able to take jobs that had previously been inaccessible to them. About 6 million women worked in war-related jobs. More than 1 million black Americans migrated from the South and took jobs in urban centers. These changes were not without resistance, as many workplaces attempted to maintain the status quo by separating workers along gender and racial lines and offering much lower pay.

While unemployment was at an all-time low and many benefited from the availability of overtime work, factory conditions were harsh and oftentimes discriminatory. Between the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and the D-Day Invasion of 1944, there were more industrial casualties on the homefront than within the military. Over 6.7 million laborers went on strike during the war years.

Racial tensions were exacerbated, leading to the “Double V for Victory” campaign launched by the Pittsburgh Courier in 1942, which reflected the hypocrisy between the ideological reasoning for U.S. involvement in the war and the denial of rights back home.

It was a truly complicated and fascinating period of American history, portentous of many things tat would come later.

While the World War II homefront had its highs and lows, it doesn’t mean the good diminishes the bad or vice versa. As humans, we are capable of holding many truths at once. We can be frightened and heartbroken yet still find joy. We can miss a loved one deeply What Into the Breeches! does beautifully is and yet still delight in weave all of this together into a humorous what we learn about and heart-warming tapestry, celebrating ourselves in their the complexity and richness of our human absence. We can’t rid experience. the world of pain, but we can create art.

Tread the Boards

To appear on stage as an actor. This idiom uses boards in the sense of “a theatrical stage,” a usage dating from the mid-1700s. It dates from the mid-1800s but was preceded by the idiom tread the stage, first recorded in 1691.

Footlights In theatre, a row of lights set at floor level at the front of a stage, used to provide a part of the general illumination and to soften the heavy shadows produced by overhead lighting.

Long in the tooth Rather old. Originates from horse’s teeth; unlike humans’, horse’s teeth continue to grow with age. They also wear down with use, but the changes in the characteristics of the teeth over time make it possible to make a rough estimate of a horse’s age by examining them.

Victory socks As during World War I, the need for socks was paramount. Cold, wet, sore feet were the enemy as surely as German or Japanese troops. The push was knitting for “The Boys,” the men on active duty.

The Allies The big four Allied powers of World War II were England (Great Britain, the United Kingdom), the United States of America, the Soviet Union (U.S.S.R., Russia), and France.

Victory Roll A hairstyle that became popular in the 1940’s. Making such a hairstyle means creating large and voluminous curls either on top of your head or around the face. The rolls got their name from an aerobatic maneuver used during World War II. Originally published by Trinity Repertory Company in their Into the Breeches study guide.

What was your inspiration for writing Into the Breeches!?

My wife Laura Kepley is the artistic director for The Cleveland Play House, and the theatre was about to celebrate their 100th anniversary, and as a result, everyone on the staff was digging into the theatre's history. I became intrigued by the effort, which led me to rifling through the Women's Committee's archived scrapbooks of the Play House's WWII years and discovering the pivotal part that the women on the homefront played in keeping the theatre afloat during that difficult time. This spurred me on to further research: war time diaries, sweethearts' correspondence with soldiers, African-American poetry of the time, anything that expanded my knowledge of women on the home-front beyond Rosie the Riveter.

At the time I had a commission with Trinity Repertory Company, a theatre which I'm quite familiar with from our time living in Rhode Island, so the play ended up a bit of a hybrid between the history of the two theatres.

How is Into the Breeches! relevant to today's audiences?

Even though the play does take place in the '40s, I do think it holds a mirror up to today in many ways, actually kind of increasingly with recent events, with more of a focus on women and their struggles in various industries. It's been interesting to see how the play is taking on more relevance as time goes on because it is very much about a group of women, in this case who have never had the opportunity to act on stage before, but it's the very fact that the men are away for the war that allows the women to take on roles that they've never had before, and not just roles in the theatre, but really roles in their lives that they've never had. One of the characters in the play has never acted before because her husband never really approved of it, but now he's gone, so she feels like she can take a chance on it. The character Maggie, was the assistant director for 26 years, and this is finally her chance to actually direct a show. It's really about all the characters awakening to new possibilities in their lives and opening up to those possibilities and running with them. It's very much about women of this time, but unfortunately, things haven't changed all that drastically since then, so I think it does carry a lot of relevance and also just the simple fact that we are technically still at war as a country, even though most of us are able to carry about as if that's not the case. This is very much a play where the presence of war is being felt and I think the contrast, to me, is almost very interesting in that this was a time period where everybody really pulled together as a country and everybody knew we were at war and everyone knew someone who was fighting overseas and the whole country really rallied together, 28

whether it was scrap metal drives or rationing of food. The whole country was in that war and I think it's good to be reminded of that nowadays when it seems like a small percentage of our countrymen are fighting these wars for us, and the rest of us are told to just go shopping and carry about our lives.

What is your connection to Shakespeare's works, especially The Henriad?

I grew up loving Shakespeare; I don't know how many times as a kid I watched the VHS tape I'd recorded of Olivier's King Lear. I've had the pleasure of seeing a full Henriad at Trinity Rep and many productions of the individual plays. The Henry plays, particularly Henry V, felt like the perfect match for a theatre trying to rally the troops and the home front.

In the show, Maggie tells Ellsworth about "the linger effect." What do you hope lingers with these audiences who come to Into the Breeches!?

With any play you hope that you characters will linger afterwards and will hang in the audience's memories, but in this case, this play ends on a note where they're about to do the play and I think that might create a bit of the linger effect because we know that something happens right after the play ends. The play ends with a beginning, so I think in that vein it will linger for an audience. There's a certain tragic air to the end of the play, I mean if you know the history of things, as far as women in the workforce in this time, they were all first told, "Don't get a job, stay at home as women, this is all men's work" and when the men all went away, suddenly the women were encouraged to work in the factories and to support the troops in that way, but once the men came back, the women were all fired and lost their jobs. So it's a time of flowering that I think this play shows, but for those of us who know the history, we know this flowering comes to an end in a few years. So I think there's also some tragic lingering in that effect.

very happy to be back at Gulfshore so soon after last season’s Steel Magnolias, when she had the honor of playing Truvy! Karen’s first appearance with Gulfshore was as Lizzie, in Maytag Virgin, with her husband right smack in the middle of the pandemic, and Gulfshore will always hold a special place in her heart for being brave enough to make that happen. She’s a Barrymore nominated actor, working primarily in Philadelphia, and has performed with the The Walnut, Arden, Wilma, InterAct, 1812, Act 2 Playhouse, The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, The Lantern, Delaware Theatre, and People’s Light.

KRISTEN MARTINO (SCENIC DESIGNER)

is excited to be returning to Gulfshore Playhouse after previously designing several shows including Winter Wonderettes, Camelot, Morning After Grace, Higher, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and The Revolutionists. Kristen is currently the Assistant Professor of Scenic Design at University of South Florida in Tampa and prior to the transition to Florida, she was based in Chicago as a freelance scenic designer. Kristen’s work has been seen around the country on stages such as Drury Lane Theatre, Porchlight Music Theatre, The Cape Playhouse, and Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre. Kristen has spent the last several years assisting prominent designers in the Chicago area which has given her the opportunity to work on museum exhibits and theatrical productions internationally including the 2020 West End production of The Prince of Egypt. Kristen was also a part of the team selected to represent the United States by designing the USA’s Emerging Artist Exhibit for the 2019 Prague Quadrennial.

a sound designer, audio producer, and educator living in New City, NY. He is a founding member of Daniel Baker & Co.,an audio production company that creates sound designs and music for theater, film,

dance and other endeavors across the media spectrum. He also teaches sound design at Barnard College, BerkleeNYC and Fordham University at Lincoln Center.

Off Broadway, Rod was the Resident Fight Director for 9 seasons for Pearl Theatre Company. Other Off-Broadway credits: The Perelman Performing Arts Center, The Lucille Lortell, Lynn Redgrave, The Mint, The Minetta Lane,The Acorn, Signature, and the East 13th Street Playhouse. Rod was the Resident Fight Director for New York City Opera at Lincoln Center from 1995 to 2010. Regional credits include: ART, Yale Rep, The Cleveland Playhouse, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Dorset Theatre Festival, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Seattle Rep, The McCarter,The Barter Theatre, Cape Playhouse, Shakespeare on the Sound, Glimmerglass Opera, Chautauqua Opera, and Opera Festival of NJ. MICHAEL CASSARA (CASTING) casts theatre and film in New York City, and is thrilled to be returning for a twelfth season with Gulfshore Playhouse, where he has cast over 45 plays and musicals since 2009. Recent credits include An American In Paris (International Tour, dir Christopher Wheeldon), Spamilton (NYC/Chicago/ Pittsburgh CLO/national), Enter Laughing (York Theatre), Gigantic (Vineyard Theatre), Forbidden Broadway (last three editions/cast albums), The 12 (Denver Center/world premiere).

JOEL MARKUS

(COO & MANAGING DIRECTOR) is thrilled

to be in his sixth season as Gulfshore Playhouse’s COO & Managing Director.

Joel enjoys working side by side with Kristen to produce Broadway caliber theatre while focusing on cultivating a great staff and culture. In his time at Gulfshore Playhouse, Joel has helped 34

grow and double the theatre’s budget, double the staff, has co-managed the design and construction of the new $72M Baker Theatre and Education Center, new production shops construction project, has been instrumental in joining LORT (most recently, being on the negotiating committee for LORT and Actors’ Equity Association), and navigated and guided the organization through the pandemic and Hurricane Ian. Joel’s thirty year career has taken him to some of our nation’s leading professional regional theatres. Previously, he spent seven years at The Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, America’s oldest professional theatre with an annual budget of over $16 Million. Joel has played integral roles in the production of hundreds of plays over ten seasons at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, four years at Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, NY, five summers at the Weston Playhouse in Vermont, American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin, and North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Joel is a graduate of Indiana University and originally from Miami, Florida.

KRISTEN COURY

(CEO & PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR)

is the CEO and Producing Artistic Director of Gulfshore Playhouse. She founded the Playhouse in 2004, after moving to Naples from New York City.

Under her leadership, the Playhouse has grown to a staff of 56, an annual budget of $8.15M with no debt, and led the charge to create a $72M state-of-the-art Theatre and Education Center at the gateway to downtown Naples, which will be open to the public in late 2024. As part of this project, Coury ignited a public/private partnership with the City of Naples, donating an acre of land upon which to build a public parking garage. While in New York, she worked on Broadway for Walt Disney Theatrical’s production of Beauty and the Beast, both nationally and internationally, and for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s company, The Really Useful Group, working on Sunset Boulevard and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Kristen made her feature film directorial debut with Friends and Family, a comedy starring Tony Lo Bianco, Anna Maria Alberghetti, and Tovah Feldshuh,

which was released around the US and Europe. Kristen has directed several new works, produced a CD, and worked on a variety of musicals in various stages of development. Kristen is also a frequent investor in Broadway productions, mostrecently The Neil Diamond Musical: A Beautiful Noise. Kristen has directed over 40 productions for the Playhouse.

Including a ten person, 2 piano My Fair Lady, world premieres, the world premiere of The God Game by Suzanne Bradbeer and The Butcher by Gwydion Suilebhan.

She is currently preparing to direct the final production in the Norris Center, the musical She Loves Me. Kristen was one of the “Top 40 Professionals Under 40” by Gulfshore Life Magazine in 2008, a “Star in the Arts” by the United Arts Council of Collier County in 2011, and she was named one of the Men and Women of the Year by Gulfshore Life in 2013. She served two terms on the board of Theatre Communications Group, the national advocacy group for professional theatres. She is a member of the board of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, and was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Business Leaders in Collier County in 2022, 2023, and 2024 Most recently, she was appointed to Florida Council for arts and culture by Senate President Kathleen Passidomo.
