Gulfshore Playhouse’s sculptural, 3-acre campus taking shape in Naples Design District, the region’s first professional ballet company launching in Fort Myers, Naples Players celebrating its 70th season, Gulfshore Opera ringing in its 10th—it’s a great time to be an art lover in Southwest Florida. In this pocketbook guide, we round up the best exhibits, concerts, screenings and art festivals to get you from October through May—from Aldo Castillo Gallery’s remixed look at masters to the return of multi-Tony Award-winning Hadestown. We’re particularly excited to see Naples gallery METHOD & CONCEPT bring the colorful spirit of Mexico’s holiday of remembrance with an open-air market, mariachi band and festive artwork during their Día de los Muertos event on November 3, and swamp rock virtuoso JJ Grey & Mofro playing Alliance for the Arts’ Arts on Tap event in December. There won’t be a shortage of transcendent experiences for classical music lovers, either. In Naples, we have acclaimed conductor Alexander Shelley taking the helm of the Naples Philharmonic as Artis—Naples’ artistic and music director. Though the role officially starts in the 2024-2025 season, Alexander previews his vision and talents this season during An Overture to Alexander: A Toast to the Future in November, and two shows he leads in the winter and spring. Meanwhile, in Lee, Southwest Florida Symphony continues to elevate its sound and reach with Radu Paponiu as music director and dynamic shows like R.E.M. Explored, which includes founding band member Mike Mills and the rock group’s hits arranged for a full orchestra. For the nostalgics, shows like Barbara B. Mann’s Jagged Little Pill, a riff on Alanis Morissett’s music, and ’80s-cult-classic Heathers at Florida Gulf Coast University keep us singing right along through an arts season full of heart.

This year, former Miami City Ballet dancers and founders of the Fort Myers-based Gulfshore Ballet dance school, Iliana Lopez and Franklin Gomero, introduce the region’s first ballet company. The couple kept the name but upped the level of professionalism, auditioning dancers in Miami, New York and Japan to create the 16-person troupe. “It’s always been our dream to launch a company in Southwest Florida,” Iliana says. The duo created the troupe to retain local talent, draw international dancers, and produce classical, neoclassical and contemporary works. Performances draw from the late choreographer Jimmy Gamonet de los Heros, who helped establish Miami City Ballet as one of the nation’s leading companies. Gulfshore Ballet performs The Nutcracker on December 9 at Tribby Arts Center in Fort Myers.
