A Woman’s Touch Painter Grace Mikell Ramsey’s dreamlike canvases ref lect the many facets of motherhood and female friendships.

Even before she became a mother, Fort Myers-based painter Grace Mikell Ramsey was captivated by the strength of women. “I’m interested in the rituals and experiences of being human, and the most magical are female,” she says. “Giving birth was the most empowering experience, getting to be part of the flow of history.” But motherhood was not without its challenges. When her daughter, Marigold, was born in 2017, Grace embraced the attachment parenting style and breastfed her for three and a half years. The closeness between mother and daughter was precious but overwhelming. When Marigold was a few months old, Grace visited New Orleans, where she had earned a master of fine arts degree at Tulane University in the early 2010s. She asked some friends if they would be open to undressing for a photoshoot. Together, the women tried different poses, chatting about the unique demands of motherhood until one suggested they nurse each other. While Grace would often transpose pho-

The juxtaposition combines the contradictions of motherhood, creating a perfect representation of how parenting feels much of the time. “The paintings I’m working on now feature a single woman going through some trial or tribulation,” Grace says. “I’m not interested in making paintings that are just saccharine or pretty. The pair opened Pizzata Pizzeria in North Naples last year. They ferment their dough for up to five days, placing it in a cooler halfway through the process to slow the fermentation and deepen the flavor. The result is a perfectly balanced, velvety crust with a crispy bottom and sweet tang.

The finished product—say, a sausage and pepperoni pizza with ricotta and hot honey—is a veritable work of art. One bite can transport you well beyond Collier County. The hands-on duo brings unequaled passion to their craft and does everything insieme (together). They aim to raise the bar and infatuate pizza aficionados by turning people onto the beauty of the slow-fermentation crust. In ‘Pizzata’ means ‘pizza party’ in Italian. For Davide, the phrase illustrates how pizza is a universal food meant for everyone—not a cultish treat for rarefied aficionados.

Philadelphia, they’ve already brought in accolades—being named the best pizza in the city by numerous publications. With the latest expansion to Southwest Florida, nothing less is expected in Naples.

Before moving back to Sarasota in early 2020, Gina and her husband, Richard, a retired British professional racer, lived in his hometown of Royal Hillsborough in Northern Ireland. At the time, she was a customer experience manager for Michael Kors’ European market and often wined and dined European clients, who were natural oenophiles. Gina needed to boost her wine I.Q. to better serve her clients, so she started studying. She had already fallen in love with Champagne years before while on a date in 2010 in Tokyo, Japan, with her

knowledge, she gravitated more and more toward Champagne. She’s long appreciated smaller artisan producers and has been heartened to see a stronger spotlight on grower Champagnes and vignerons who are becoming superstars. “When I was blogging about some of these growers in 2018, they were fairly unknown or just hitting the market in the UK,” she says. She’s a firm believer that Champagne is a democratic drink to be enjoyed enthusiastically and for all occasions. “People are learning how to drink Champagne other than for celebrations and realizing it’s OK to have on a Thursday or with burgers or fried chicken,” Gina says. “They’re understanding how versatile Champagne actually is.”

rom one of the 10 counter seats at Fort Myers’ Liberty, you see some of the finer rock ‘n’ roll machinations of a team in effortless lockstep. When dinner service starts at 5:15 p.m., the trio behind the counter is like an army prepared for battle—calm, ready to execute. As guests come in, the energy dials up. So does the music. Everyone finds their groove; the team tweezing garnish and skillfully slicing wahoo, moving as if in ballet to the beats of Kanye West and 50 Cent. But there’s no ‘Yes, chef!’ barked in unison here. Wearing a backward black baseball cap and sleeves of tattoos on both arms, chef-owner Bob Boye doesn’t impose hierarchy in his kitchen. “If your coat says ‘executive chef,’ I don’t really care—your food better be great. Period,” the 38-year-old says. But Bob doesn’t feel the need for fancy titles at Liberty, anyway. The kitchen isn’t large enough to divide into specific tasks or positions, and Bob usually places his cousin, Richee Boye, in the chef role, preferring to take a back seat unless implementing a new project. “Your skill set shouldn’t be limited to only the things you already know—I expect everyone that works with us to learn something new on a weekly basis,” Bob says. Shielded behind panels of frosted glass, the stamp-sized, small plate-focused Liberty feels like a vortex, drawing you into a world apart from the cacophony of the nearby Tamiami Trail. Inside, your name is chalked on a placard at your table, and no two dining experiences look the same. The menu is presented like a bingo card. Squares with names of dishes are divided into rows, the top containing the lightest fare, leading down to heavier mains and then rounding out the bottom with dessert— the highlight of which is Bob’s signature medium-rare chocolate chip cookies (the seemingly impossible gooey-not-raw morsels result from Bob’s scientific precision, with ingredients measured down to the gram and temperatures considered at every turn).

Bob’s culinary ethos revolves around rethinking expected ideas around food and delighting guests with every bite. On the menu, you might find a Parisian gnocchi, which has been on the menu since day one but is constantly evolving, or teriyaki cauliflower with black garlic that’s aged in-house for 45 days to add depth and richness to the sauce. Every ingredient, technique and garnish is intentional. “The goal is not to simply innovate for innovation’s sake,” the chef says.

The Bob of 20 years ago wouldn’t recognize the Bob now. As a student at the University of South Florida (“I studied marketing, business administration, psychology—I bounced all over,” Bob says), he bartended at party spots where gummy bear shots and flaming cocktails were standard, and his personal diet was devoid of culinary flare. “I was a plain Jane, steak-and-potatoes kind of guy—the opposite of a person who would go and dine at a place like Liberty,” he says. Training as a bartender at the now-shuttered Cru in South Fort Myers in early 2010, he gravitated toward cooking, watching how plates were assembled, and slowly moved into preparing simple items, like flatbreads. In six months, he became a line cook, and by 2015, Bob was the chef-owner. He didn’t have any formal culinary training to reference as he navigated his way up the ranks of the restaurant world. Instead, Bob learned from esteemed chefs he worked alongside at Cru, by eating his way around town and visiting restaurants and wine regions across the country. He day-tripped to Tampa, Orlando and Miami; ventured to Chicago to sample the restaurants and bars in the Michelin-earning Alinea Group; consumed every morsel of knowledge Jordan Kahn at the two-Michelin-starred Vespertine generously shared on a visit to Culver City, CA; and traveled to New York to dine at lauded Eleven Madison Park. In 2013, Bob visited Oregon’s wine country to attend a pinot noir camp hosted by 50 wineries in the Willamette Valley. Winemakers acted as camp counselors, leading the group through wineries,

realized there’s a market for this,” he says. “I just have to make it and get to those people.” Like André, many local artists bridge the gap between event producer and performer, recognizing the best way to build an audience is to create one. Love Your Rebellion (LYR), the nonprofit I founded to amplify marginalized voices, was instrumental in helping build Except You’s audience. Since 2018, our music events, such as diversity-focused Babefest, have brought national touring acts to local stages. And the network we’ve cultivated through LYR has opened the door for us to record with industry veterans, such as Howard “Merlin” Wulkan at Farmadelica Sound on Pine Island, and to open for international touring bands like Subhumans. Of course, none of it’s possible without venues. Whether a living room, an art center or a restaurant, musicians need places to perform. When Nice Guys opened its original location in 2013, there was a serious lack of venues in Southwest Florida for local feet, owners Greg Gebhard and Jovana Batkovic would close two hours early, take out all the tables and chairs, and charge a $5 cover for each show. “We were trying to do every single show because there was nowhere else for these bands to play,”

The chic, artsy assortment of robes, pillow covers, bed scarves and throw blankets feature iconic paintings from history and original works by her mother. Annecy Sofa by Vladimir Kagan This sloped sofa was one of the last pieces Vladimir Kagan released before passing in 2016. The furniture designer is known for his revolutionary work in the 1950s, with innovative, ergonomic furnishings that bank on organic shapes and sculptural forms. “Ever ything [Vladimir] creates is so inviting and sexy and functional,” L.A. says. The designer loves the Annecy Sofa for its subtle balance of masculine and feminine energies, as depicted in its dark wood armrest and butter y soft fabric. carpentersworkshopgallery.com

Blonde Drinks Cabinet by Christopher Kurtz While this floating cabinet appears to be melting off the wall, you can rest assured the handcarved tulipwood piece is fully capable of storing your prized bottles and glassware. “It piques your curiosity until it’s open, and you see what’s inside,” L.A . says. The designer suggests balancing the sculptural statement furnishing in a room with clean lines and soft upholstery to play up the cabinet’s fluid form. “This piece is exactly what you want in a drinks cabinet—it sets the tone when you’re gathering around it because it’s so playful,” L.A . says. sarahmyerscough.com

Infinity 16 by Atelier Alain Ellouz L.A . sees alabaster lighting making its way into mainstream furniture design, and the designer points to Atelier Alain Ellouz’s pendants as a gorgeous example of the trend. The ancient material was used for window screens and stained glass before it made its way into sculptures and, eventually, lighting. “It’s a serene material that comes to life when it’s lit,” L.A . says. Leather straps contrast with soft, sloping stone for a modern take on organic materials. Part of the Infinit y collection, Infinit y 16 builds on previous models with a three-part loop that emits a dreamy, inviting glow. atelier-alain-ellouz.com

Mural, Mural on the Wall Stacy DeMott treats her clients’ walls like canvases, creating one-of-a-kind murals that imbue rooms with individuality.

A wall is not just a wall in Stacy DeMott’s world. A wall is a medium for an immersive experience. Aesthetes seek out the 35-year-old for her ability to create charming, character-filled murals, whether a vibrant Lilly Pulitzer-inspired floral nursery, a foyer painted in goldveined faux marble or a portico with mangroves snaking up columns. Stacy’s love for art developed early. As a child, her tiny fingers regularly curled around a crayon, colored pencil or paintbrush, leading her to pursue an undergraduate degree in fine arts at the University of South Florida. Upon graduation, she founded DeMott Design to focus on commissions while working with her mom at the family’s shutter company. In 2021, she purchased her first home and realized she could translate her love of painting to her blank walls. “I could

Well & Good Fort Myers’ Alex Wilson looks out for the holistic well-being of her generation. While Southwest Florida has long been a haven for fit retirees and spry seniors, 34-year-old certified yoga instructor Alex C. Wilson saw the region’s potential as an emerging center for holistic wellness for the next generation. In 2022, after seeing how the pandemic left people simultaneously starved for connection and interested in increasing their health consciousness, she held the first annual SWFL Wellness Fair at Fort Myers’ Wa-Ke Hatchee Park. The free, one-day, walkabout event aimed to bolster the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of the community, with a focus on making wellness more accessible. “We all want to make it to retirement one day,” she says. “We want to get the most out of those years because we feel our best. We don’t want to reach retirement and come to this place of, ‘My body hurts, I’m tired, and all I can do is rest right now.’”

Taking Flight This issue focuses on the next generation taking the helm in Southwest Florida. At the center are the descendants of local pioneers who choose to stay and invest in their forebears’ community. The Van Arsdale clan is a staple in Naples, dating back to the 1950s when John C. Van Arsdale, Sr., brought his Cape Cod-based airline to town. In 1980, we covered the airline’s meteoric rise, when Peter (left) and John were taking the reigns from their father. They are seen above with wives Judy (left) and Mifa. Peter and Judy’s daughter, Nina Van Arsdale, continues the family legacy of community engagement. Her mother’s side also has deep roots in town, with Nina’s great-grandfather Allen Joslin building the original Naples Beach Hotel’s golf course in 1929. “This was such a wonderful place to grow up, and I wanted my daughter to experience what Naples has to offer,” Nina says of her decision to move back from Los Angeles. Today, she is a strong supporter of Naples Zoo, which she grew up visiting as a kid, as well as Youth Haven and STARability Foundation. “Naples is really like no other

place—people show up for each other. They support each other,” Nina says.
