E-Wallets: the future of shopping? Every year smartphones play an ever greater role in our lives, revolutionizing how we search, shop, and pay for goods and services. In response, E-Wallets have emerged. Bahrain has quickly established itself as a Fintech hub, and in this Special Report we speak with Bahrain’s leaders in this exciting technology, with the aim of learning how E-Wallets may, sooner than you think, change your daily habits.

Special Report - E-Wallet
What is an e-Wallet? An E-Wallet, also referred to as digital or mobile wallets, allow users to make electronic transactions such as purchasing goods and services, via their computer or smartphone. The emergence of e-Wallets offers new payment channels and services once available only from banks, and is therefore a major challenge to the traditional banking system. E-Wallets are available to consumers free of charge, and are gaining popularity among retailers due to the security, efficiency, and added utility
At the purchase or check-out page of an e-commerce site, an E-Wallet makes it unnecessary for the holder to have to spend their time filling out order forms on each and every site they visit and make a purchase from, because the information has already been stored and automatically updated for every merchant site visited.
How do they work? There is both a software and information component to an E-Wallet. The software provides security and encryption for the personal information and for the actual transaction, while
Security E-Wallets also increase the security of transactions since they typically do not pass payment card details to the merchants website (a unique transaction identifier or token is shared instead). All Bahrain based E-Wallets are approved and certified by international payment schemes meeting their strict security standards such as OTP, 3DSecure, Biometric authentication and Touch ID. There is also no storage of any sensitive customer information. Merchants also have no access to consumer information as they only receive an approval code and reference

They are not just for financial transactions and can be also used to authenticate the holder’s credentials etc. Bank account details, driver’s licence, health card, loyalty cards, and all forms of ID documents can further be linked to an E-Wallet and stored on a phone.
Ease of use Research reveals that up to 25% of online shoppers abandon their order due to frustration in filling in forms. An E-Wallet combats this problem by giving users the option to transfer their information securely and accurately.
the information component is basically a database of user-input information. This information consists of the users shipping address, billing address, payment methods (including credit card numbers, expiry dates, and security numbers), and any other relevant information. E-Wallets are available to consumers free of charge, require minimal setup, and are relatively easy to use. Once the software is installed, the user simply enters all their pertinent information, and it’s ready to go.
number with full masking of debit or credit card numbers in operation.
Bahrain’s leaders in E-Wallets In 2017 the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) announced, in a joint initiative with Benefit, the first phase of a national E-Wallet rollout. Fast forward nearly a year and CrediMax, Viva, Zain, BISB, and Batelco are all leading the smart phone payment system. Bahrain has quickly established itself as a Fintech hub and as more and more FinTech companies and solutions are introduced, it will become critical for businesses to take the lead in digitizing their services. Gulf Insider May 2018
The use of E-Wallets is seeing a significant increase in Asian countries with one in five consumers now using an E-wallet, twice as many as just two years ago. A recent survey by MasterCard carried out across fourteen markets in Asia Pacific saw a total of 8,738 consumers, aged 18-64, polled online on questions relating to mobile shopping as well as reasons for shopping online versus in-store. Consumers in the Philippines and Malaysia top the region with the highest year-on-year growth in mobile shopping, recording increases of 12.6% and 10.1% respectively. Meanwhile, consumers in India are the region’s top mobile shoppers, followed by China. Asia’s penchant for mobile shopping has also fuelled a steady increase in digital wallet adoption, with more than one in five consumers (22.3%) using such payment methods. The region’s consumers are also embracing QR code payments. Over one in ten consumers now use QR code payments with the most avid users hailing from China (42.6%).
The Future As with any major new technology, millennials are the early adopters leading the way. Whilst it may not happen overnight here in Bahrain, there is a global shift happening with an estimated 58% of millennials reportedly ready to switch over to E-Wallets in the USA alone. It seems the power of digital transformation is already shaping the way we pay. According to the Global Payment Report 2017—WorldPay on global payment trends in 2016, 18% of all global payments were made via E-Wallets with credit card payments making up 29%. However, future predictions see global E-Wallet payments jumping to 46% by 2021 with a decline in credit card payments to just 15%. With technology evolving at such a rapid pace it’s surely inevitable that payments will become more seamless, and with ever more merchants in Bahrain taking E-Wallet payments, shopping and payment transactions are only going to become smarter, faster, and more secure.

virtual transactions Gulf Insider learns about BenefitPay, the first true e-wallet organizer in Bahrain with Yousif Al Nefaiei, Deputy General Manager of Business Services. So how does it work?
Before the internet, researching information was a burden. We had to physically visit a library, or find an expert, or look through an encyclopedia etc. Nowadays we do a Google search and in just a few seconds access the most up-to-date info. BenefitPay patterns itself to the same kind of innovation, a directory of incredibly fast and easy on-hand payments. First, is the number of ways it can pay – with the current banks or cards you have within the e-wallet itself, you are capable of choosing which one you want to pay with. Another is our vision of the product as an enabler, closely intertwined to a community of banks and merchants with easy inclusion and fast integration. We have all Bahrain’s banks onboard with this system, but our goal this year is to add all merchants that accept card payments.

Nowadays, we do a Google search and in just a few seconds access the most up-to-date info. BenefitPay patterns itself to the same kind of innovation, a directory of incredibly fast and easy on-hand payments. What about security?
On 30th April, BenefitPay introduced Fawri+ service, which shall enable the user to send funds from their bank account to any bank account in Bahrain within 30 seconds.
Information isn’t physically stored on the phones. BenefitPay works as a relay for transactions and follows international standards for security associated with e-wallet and online bank transactions. It is accredited by PCI standards, and also follows the regulations placed by the banks for each card included in the e-wallet. Take for example a bank’s daily spending limit. The limit will also apply to the e-wallet for this particular card. Similarly, discounts and card promotions are also carried to the e-wallet. We also have our own security measures, some of which are certifiable transaction receipts and a close loop for our payment gateway. There is also customer varied security, consisting of personal pins, biometric finger scans, and prior accessing of payments. A two-

Shopping is more and more being done online these days. Almost everything that you can buy can now be bought online, and usually at less expense and with greater ease and convenience. MPs seek to terminate Expats above 60 in government institutions A proposal to ban expats over the age of 60 from working in government institutions was submitted by a group of MPs. The proposal comes less than a year after the council voted against a similar bill to do the same for foreign employees in the public sector aged above 50. Submitted by MP Dr. Jameela Al Sammak and four fellow MPs, the proposal seeks to prohibit expats above 60 from working in ministries, official authorities and public establishments. The MPs said that the move would create more job opportunities for Bahrainis.
MPs seek to replace expat staff in hospitals Bahrain’s MPs have presented a bill that seeks to compel private health institutions to employ Bahrainis over expats. First tabled by the First Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives Ali Al Aradi and four MPs in January, the bill will greatly reduce the choice of medical institutions to hire purely on merit and stipulates that expat staff in private health institutions should be sacked within 3 months if a Bahraini candidate is available for the position. Saudi to Launch Huge ‘Entertainment City’
Bahrain’s New Oil Discovery Won’t Yield ‘Significant Economic Windfall’ – Analysts Oil and gas analysts at BMI Research do not expect Bahrain’s recent discovery of a large oil and gas field to yield a ‘significant economic windfall’ for the country. “Extraction will be fraught with technical difficulties, pushing up operating costs at the field, such that the government will have to provide generous contract terms to partner companies,” the analysts said in a brief research note sent to Rigzone. “We believe this will limit prospects for a significant boost to the country’s fiscal revenues and balance of payments dynamics. As such, we maintain our view that Bahrain will continue to face significant economic headwinds,” the analysts added. BMI, which highlighted that typical onshore reserves in the Middle East have an extraction cost of around $10 per barrel, said the extraction cost for the newfound resources is likely to run close to between $75 and 80 per barrel. “This leaves little room for the major oil companies to profit in the current low oil price environment,” the analysts said. “These slim margins will likely put severe constraints on the scale of the extraction unless oil prices gain greater momentum,” they added. Bahrain’s new discovery is estimated to contain at least 80 billion barrels of tight oil, which is the kingdom’s biggest ever find, according to the country’s oil minister.
Saudi Arabia, on 28th April, laid the foundation stone for a massive landmark entertainment hub southwest of Riyadh that will comprise high-end theme parks, motor sport facilities, and a safari park, all of which in hopes of attracting 17 million annual visitors by 2030. The Qiddiya entertainment city, located 25 miles from the Saudi capital, will be on a 129 square mile site, which is almost the size of Las Vegas. It is one of the so-called “giga projects” financed by Saudi’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in line with the Vision 2030 plan announced by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to wean the economy off oil and create jobs for young Saudis. This plan has the stated objective of increasing household spending on entertainment from 2.9% to 6.0% of gross domestic product, according to press materials. Qiddiya is envisioned as a gigantic entertainment hub with facilities divided into six main components: amusement parks; sports tracks, auto and motorcycle racing areas on desert and asphalt tracks; indoor ski slopes and water parks; natural attractions; and cultural and heritage events. The project includes resorts, hotels, restaurants and residential units. In a statement to official Saudi news agency SPA, the Secretary General of the Foundation Council for the Qiddiya project, Fahd bin Abdullah Tounsi, underlined that roughly two-thirds of Saudi’s population of 32 million are under the age of 35 and noted that “there is a great need…to provide them with entertainment.” He went on to point out that the project’s goal is to recapture about $30 billion currently spent annually by Saudi’s on tourism and entertainment outside the kingdom by stimulating Saudi’s to have more fun at home Qiddiya is expected to create 57,000 jobs in Saudi by the end of 2030. The inaugural ceremony for the ambitious entertainment city entertainment comes after the lifting last December of a 35year religion-related ban on movie theaters which has led to a groundbreaking first post-ban screening on April 18 of Disney’s “Black Panther” in a new AMC-branded theatre in Riyadh.

MP accuses govt. bodies of growing corruption A heated discussion over bribery accusations against some government establishments broke out at the Council of Representatives. The debate between MP Abdulrahman Buali and Shura Council and Representative Council Affairs Minister Ghanim Al Buainain began after the former claimed that corruption has spread in government entities, specifically the municipalities. “Why did we come to this situation. Bribery has spread, not only in the municipalities but in many areas and establishments in Bahrain,” the lawmaker stated while demanding state officials to look into this dangerous matter”. Buali, who also heads the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee in the council, claimed that he discovered corruption cases at Muharraq Municipality, which is in charge of providing municipal services to the entire Muharraq Governorate, including Hidd after its municipality was apparently stripped off most of its jurisdictions a few years back. He said, “It’s extremely difficult nowadays to receive services from Muharraq Municipality because of widespread bribery in it. I am responsible for my statements and I have the evidence to support them. There are administrative, legal and ethical violations in Muharraq Municipality. I am willing to personally lead the minister to the areas where such violations have occurred.” Buali’s statements irked Al Buainain, who strongly rejected his accusations and defended the government institutions. 26

MP’s proposal to impose BD400 fees on expat students – Rejected A bill to impose BD400 annual fees on non-Bahraini pupils who’re studying in public schools was rejected, considering it as a deprivation of one of children’s essential rights. The bill was initially submitted by MP Jalal Kadhim back in 2015 and it exempts GCC nationals from paying the fees. The existing law stipulates that “fundamental (primary and intermediate) and secondary education should be free for all in public schools in the Kingdom of Bahrain”. If approved, the bill would impose annual fees of BD400 on non-Bahraini students in public schools. A number of MPs voiced their rejection to the bill, raising concerns such as harming children’s right to receive education, the spread of illiteracy, and violating international agreements which Bahrain is committed to. Kadhim, who burst into anger in response to his fellow MPs’ rejection to the bill, insisted that “the priority of free education should be given only to Bahraini citizens”.
US approves to sell Attack Helicopters and Missiles to Bahrain The U.S. State Department approved the sale to Bahrain of 12 Bell AH-1Z attack helicopters as well as 26 engines, dozens of missiles and rockets of various kinds and a variety of navigation, missile planning, communications and electronic warfare systems at an estimated cost of $911.4 million. Additionally, the deal includes personnel training and training equipment and US government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services. In September, the State Department approved a sale of 19 F-16V fighter aircraft to Bahrain in a deal worth $2.78 billion.
Gigantic fish-killing dead zone found off Oman A ‘dead zone’ in the Arabian Sea that is ‘bigger than Scotland’ has been discovered by British scientists. No fish, marine plants or other animals live there. The poorly studied dead zone is ‘vast and growing’ and the ocean itself ‘suffocating’, researchers said. People who rely on the ocean for food and work are also endangered by the growing zone, they warned. The environmental disaster was identified by underwater robots exploring more than half a mile down in the Gulf of Oman. Global warming and human waste has combined to trigger a dramatic drop in oxygen far worse than previously feared, explained study coauthor Dr Bastien Queste, of the University of East Anglia. In areas traditionally called ‘dead zones’, oxygen plummets to levels so low many animals suffocate and die. As fish avoid these zones, their habitats shrink and they become more vulnerable to predators or fishing. But the problem goes far beyond dead zones, the study’s authors say. Even smaller oxygen declines can stunt growth in animals, hinder reproduction and lead to disease or even death. It also can trigger the release of dangerous chemicals such as nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas up to 300 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, and toxic hydrogen sulphide. Dr Queste, who worked with Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University, said: ‘The Arabian Sea is the largest and thickest dead zone in the world. Our research shows the situation is actually worse than feared – and the area of dead zone is vast and growing. The ocean is suffocating’.

NEW EU REGULATION WILL EFFECT GCC COMPANIES READY OR NOT, HERE COMES GDPR!
W
hat has 99 articles, global reach, and fines in millions of Euros for organizations mishandling personal data? The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), that’s what. The GDPR is the EU’s new privacy regulation seeking to give individuals located in the EU greater control over their data. Seems not a month goes by without a major data breach affecting the identity of millions of people. According to idtheftcenter.com, the cumulative total of reported accounts breached since January 1st, 2005 is over 1 trillion! Under the terms of GDPR, organizations are required to respect the rights of data owners by ensuring personal data is gathered legally and under strict conditions. Organizations who collect and manage personal data are obliged to protect it from misuse and exploitation. Should you care if you’re not in Europe? Maybe. GDPR affects any organization handling the personal data of individuals physically inside the EU regardless of where the organization resides. Need more convincing? How do fines of 20 million Euros or up to four percent of worldwide turnover for the infringement of the rights of data subjects grab you? That’s certainly no slap on the wrist! Companies doing business in the EU or actively processing the personal data of individuals covered under GDPR best take this new regulation seriously. The types of data considered personal under the existing legislation include more than names, addresses, and identification numbers. GDPR extends the definition of personal data so that 28

something like an IP address, web cookie, or business email address is also protected. GDPR is a truly monumental step in securing the data rights of individuals. The new protections require organizations to carefully review their data handling practices. Even non-EU citizens are covered to include visitors during their time inside EU member nations. The regulation places legal obligations on data processors to maintain records of personal data and how it is processed. Contracted services must also comply with the GDPR. Organizations are required to explain in detail how customer information is used in a clear and understandable way.
EU-directed online marketing forms and interactions must obtain explicit consumer consent. This consent must be “freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous.” GDPR provides consumers with a right to know when their data has been hacked. Organizations are obliged to report any breaches likely to “result in a risk to the rights and freedoms of individuals leading to discrimination, damage to reputation, financial loss, loss of confidentiality, or any other economic or social disadvantage.” Organizations are further required to notify the appropriate EU national bodies within 72 hours and those affected without “unduly delay” in an effort to restrict damage to individuals from breached personal data. The regulation officially goes into effect on 25 May 2018. Gulf organizations need to take decisive steps to comply with the EU GDPR or else run the risk of incurring stiff fines for failure to do so.

Fatema Bastaki and Noor Al Saati, Co-Brand Managers for Imtiaz for Her, a division of Bahrain Credit, have committed to support the summit for the next three years and are actively involved in its success. So why the need for such a summit? Al Obaidat cites a World Economic

Forum report of 2017 which claims Bahrain is ranked 122 out of 146 countries on the gender equality gap. “It’s not good at all.” she tells us, adding that Bahrain is lacking women in far too many decision-making spaces. Further, she tells us that the Supreme Council for Women have stated that only 14% of board members in Bahrain are women. Al Obaidat says that this does not stem from lack of ability on the part of women, but from a lack of inclusion and opportunities.
Al Obaidat says some of the problems currently faced by would be female entrepreneurs are a general lack of mentorship, lack of funding, and lack of suitable networking opportunities She promises that there will be mentors and mentoring sessions, networking opportunities, training sessions, and women speaking to others to reveal their own stories. The summit is to be a melting pot of different women from different places. With 500 expected attendees across a range of age, nationality, and professions, the event promises to be a bustle of activity. “I think the Women Power Summit is going to be a great tool for women in Bahrain to reach their capabilities.” said Bastaki. And men too, she adds after a brief pause.
Al Obaidat says that she plans for a 50/50 percentage of male and female speakers next year.

y first day was exciting yet nerve wracking. The team quickly made me welcome and my first assignment was to deliver 350 words on my experience of the World Scholar’s Cup competition (see page xx). Sitting at my desk, a blank page in front of me was daunting, as I was on my way to potentially being published. After work, I was invited to a media launch. Thrilled to have a chance to see what events are like, I was nervous to not only see the paparazzi and VIPs but also be joining them! With advice from Nick; I was able to snap photos

alongside the professionals. I realised it’s not all glamourous events but hard work too. I learnt how to construct articles, including why research is important. Myriad styles needed were difficult to grasp at first, however I improved greatly with guidance and am happy with a good days work. Day three suddenly became one dreams are made of, when I was asked to a Ferrari event at the BIC. Approaching the track, I was practically jumping in my seat to see these iconic cars. I instantly began taking photos and must have taken hundreds before finally calming down. Whilst meeting the
drivers, and checking out the cars, I was told I may have a chance of a hot lap with a professional Ferrari driver. I was ecstatic. Getting in the steel gray GTC4 Lusso was sensational. Going 220km/h down the Main straight was the best part of my day. Simply amazing! Day four was just as fabulous, after work was the opening of ThEATre at Vox cinemas in The Avenues. A luxury cinema experience with food from Michelin star chef, Gary Rhodes. I love movies and food, so a perfect combination. The fifth and final day, I was sad to be leaving but happy for the experiences. Finishing my articles gave me a feeling of accomplishment. Saying goodbye to the team was hard, however I’m looking forward to taking my newly found skills back to school and seeing my friends. Writing is more difficult than I thought although I’ve loved every minute of it; and will let you, the reader, decide if I’ve succeeded! Daniel’s work placement at Gulf Insider HQ was arranged privately as an exclusive and one-off experience.

WORLD SCHOLAR’S CUP Daniel White joins a global community of students on a journey to Yale University.
I
was first introduced to the annual World Scholar’s Cup competition (WSC), as a year seven student at the British School of Bahrain. Now eight rounds and three years later, I’m returning to compete for my school, and represent Bahrain, with another chance at reaching the prestigious Tournament of Champions at Yale University. An academic competition—the WSC sees over 15000 students, from across the globe, compete in four categories; debate, collaborative essay writing, an individual 120 question test and the ‘Bowl’—where everyone partakes in an interactive, multiple choice quiz where you have to be quick on the clicker! The competition consists of three rounds, Regionals (held in each participating country); Globals (hosted in different countries including Bangkok, Athens and Kuala Lumpur) and the final Tournament of Champions. Qualifying for Globals sees 5,000 scholars from 50 countries come together to learn, socialize and have fun at events like the bustling cultural fair
where stalls represent each country. Our Bahraini stand featured thobe clad scholars and information about Bahraini history.
Road to Yale After two years competing, and only reaching the Globals, I was ecstatic to finally qualify for the Tournament of Champions to compete at Ivy League institution. Arriving at Yale, on the first day, was a bit nerve wracking, however we were quickly scrambled into new teams for a mass scavenger hunt. Undertaking wacky tasks with 11 people you’ve never certainly lightened the mood. By the end of the day, confidence was high and new friends made. As a team we worked incredibly hard and it paid off! Our team placed 15th out of 300 of the best teams in the world and we faired well with individual medals too. My teammate Yajur won nine medals and Partiv performed outstandingly picking up a fantastic 14 medals across the competition. My
haul of seven medals brought our team total to a whopping 30 medals and four trophies. Apart from competing against the best students in the world, I love WSC as the subjects are applicable to the real world. Annual themes, such as “An Unlikely World”; make the competition enjoyable, relevant and special. Competing at the WSC is not only about academic achievement, but also making new friends from different countries, working together to share knowledge and collaborate. Representing my school and Bahrain makes me incredibly proud; as does seeing Bahraini students showing national pride. Bringing Bahrain to the international theatre of academic success was our true victory and I can’t wait to compete again.

Intend to develop your spirit and change your consciousness this Ramadan. Find moments that of quietness that are free from the chaos of feelings. Try to take time out for yourself – away from larger gatherings during the day – and meditate. Be closer to nature – a walk in the park or by the beach – as that helps accelerate the process of development and access to peace.

NO Shift!
Live Well
Unsurprisingly, given my month of munch, I’ve not lost any kilos. However, I haven’t put any on so, having lost 3kgs, I’ve still got 22kgs to go. I may have struggled with the temptation of sumptuous food, however I have proved to myself that I have unexpected heroic will power when it’s come to banishing the booze. With this in mind, I’m going to commit to a new regime and join Al Areen Palace & Spa’s new Live Your Life fitness and wellbeing program and, of course, I’ll be recording my progress (hopefully not lack of it) for you in all its sweat inducing glory. I thought I might also see if I can really take on a Live Well challenge by fasting for the very first time. There are multiple benefits of fasting including physical, mental and spiritual so I’ve decided to put my ‘Go FASTer’ stripes on for the holy month of Ramadan and get this shift moving! See you in June.
Challenge Christine Warren-White finds herself living a little too well on her Live Well adventure…
L
ast month I promised to see you on the Yoga mat and whilst I’ve indeed spent all of April with a mat, I’ve somehow managed to swap floor for table. I confess to having every intention of heading to contortionist class but seemed to have bypassed Bikram and sidestepped Sivananda in favour of food nirvana at Fortnum’s and eating enlightenment at extravagant Escoffier establishments. In fact, all in the name of work honest, in one day I managed to tuck into not one but two Michelin meals that quite frankly takes the biscuit. I know, I know it’s all about will power and I’ve been brilliant at forgoing the French fizz (I’ve not touched a drop) however I’m yet to master meals.

Monster Munch I’ve either been nibbling away like a gold digger at an oil convention or munching like a demented termite just moved into a treehouse. Having nailed the no to all beverages—other than water, green tea and the odd Nespresso, I’m still saying aye to the pie. Not good. One might argue that sublime food is good for the soul and that may be the case if you’re a ‘Skinny’, scoffing only chicken soup. If however you’re troughing calorific chicken chausseur, it’s more sinner sinner than winner winner chicken dinner! There is such a thing as living too well. I need to find balance and not just the standing on one leg kind.

How to Win in Business and Life Every month Gulf Insider publish 4 pages that reveal brilliant secrets for winning in business and life. The techniques are provided by top international experts and we will often summarize an entire book into a single page so you can learn the essence of their wisdom in minutes instead of hours. This month we reveal 9 habits of remarkably persuasive people, the vision-based business plan, the leadership commitment, 7 ways to deal with a co-worker who drags down the team, the only 3 skills that great leaders need. Take the time to learn what we reveal each month and you will be rewarded a thousand times over!
9 Habits Of Remarkably Persuasive People
T
he ability to persuade is critical in any business or career - and why successful people are extremely good at persuading others. Here are some of the habits of remarkably persuasive people:
1. They take bold stands - Research
shows we naturally assume confidence equates with skill. Even the most skeptical will at least be partly persuaded by a confident speaker. So be bold. Stand behind your opinions, and let your enthusiasm show. People will naturally be more persuaded.
2. They adjust their rate of speech
- In certain situations, talking fast works. Other times, not so much. If your audience is likely to disagree, speak faster, and if your audience is likely to agree, speak slower. Why? When your audience is inclined to disagree with you, speaking faster gives them less time to form their own counterarguments and you have a better chance of persuading them. But, when your audience is inclined to agree with you, speaking slowly gives them
44
Gulf Insider May 2018
time to evaluate your arguments and factor in a few of their own thoughts.
3. They start with small “wins”
- Research shows that gaining agreement has an enduring effect, even if only over the short term. So start your argument with statements or premises you know your audience will agree with. Build a foundation for further agreement.
4. They occasionally swear - Say
your team needs to pull together … right freaking now. Tossing in an occasional — and heartfelt — curse word can actually help instill a sense of urgency because it shows you care.
5. They know how their audience prefers to process information -
Don’t push for instant agreement if someone’s personality makes that unlikely. Some people need time to think and to process. By demanding an immediate answer you put them on the defensive. In the absence of time to reflect, they will fall back on the safe choice: sticking to the status quo, so say something like “I have an idea that I think makes sense, but I feel sure there are things I’m missing. If I run it by you, could you think about it for a day or two and then tell me what you think?” This approach shows you value their opinion and gives them time to consider. But don’t ask for thought and reflection if your audience loves to make quick decisions.
6. They share positives and negatives - According to University
of Illinois professor Daniel O’Keefe, sharing an opposing viewpoint or two is more persuasive than sticking solely to your argument. Why? Very few ideas or proposals are perfect. Your audience know that. So talk about the things they’re already considering. Discuss potential negatives and show how you will mitigate or overcome those problems.
7. They draw positive conclusions -
While it’s tempting to use scare tactics, positive outcome statements tend
Experts Reveal Life Secrets
to be more persuasive. Most people respond negatively to feeling bullied into changing a behavior. So if you’re trying to produce change, focus on the positives of that change. Take your audience to a better place instead of telling your audience what to avoid.
8. They choose the right medium
- Say you’re a man hoping to convince a man you don’t know well, or even
The VisionBased Business Plan By Erin Duckhorn
T
he idea of a business plan is very comforting. It makes people feel safe and secure to know that there is a plan guiding business activities in the “right” way. But why is it that business plans almost never come to life? Why do almost all of them, once written, sit on a shelf and gather dust, while the futures they describe never see the light of day, and the businesses they describe wobble their way into their uncertain futures? A business plan is flawed right from the start unless it’s based on the right intention. In order for a business plan to work—to truly be useful—it must be based on your business vision. Your vision is your dream for the future of the business and the path you will take to make it a reality. No matter what stage of the business development cycle your business is in (infancy, adolescence, or maturity), as the leader of the organization, your vision should be absolutely clear, it should describe where you are going and what the destination will be like. A business without a vision is directionless. It lacks purpose and heart. It lacks the essential idea from which commitment, growth and the sense of personal achievement arise and flourish.
at all. What should you do? If you have a choice, don’t speak in person. Write an email first. As a general rule, men tend to feel competitive in person and turn what should be a conversation into a contest we think we need to win. The opposite is true if you’re a woman hoping to persuade other women as women are more focused on relationships, so in-person communication tends to be more
effective. But if you’re a guy trying to convince another guy you know well, definitely communicate in person.
9. They make sure they’re right
- Remarkably persuasive people understand how to frame and deliver their messages. Be clear, be concise, be to the point, and win the day because your data, reasoning, and conclusions are beyond reproach.
The same holds true for a business plan created without vision. Your business plan is the link between the work of your business and the vision that work is intended to produce. As we all know, humans make choices based on emotions. That’s why when attracting and converting new customers you must appeal to their emotional mind rather than their rational mind. It’s the emotional part of the mind that makes the buying decisions. Doesn’t it then make sense that your business plan should inspire that same kind of emotional “buy in” with your employees, lenders, investors etc.? Your vision-based business plan is a statement of your vision and a current description of the main strategies and tactics you’ll use to make your vision come true. Here are some “productive points of view” about planning that will make it a truly worthwhile endeavour:
• Start with what’s important to you. A mediocre plan that you (and others) feel passionately about will serve you better than a technically superior plan that you don’t feel strongly about. • Approach planning as more of
an art than a science. Professionallyformatted plans with tons of quantification and data can give a false impression of certainty and precision. Use your best thinking when you plan, but don’t forget that even the best thinking involves educated guesswork.
• Create a planning framework that
accommodates change. Don’t think of your plan as a rigid, “final product” with every detail pinned down. Think of it more as a series of guideposts of key
topics to focus attention on and targets to aim for.
• Treat the plan as a living, growing document. Review
it, evaluate it, and revise it. Keep questioning your assumptions. Stay flexible and open to change. A traditional business plan simply won’t give you the results you want or need because nobody’s committed to working it. The business plan that always works may look a lot like the traditional business plan; you could put them side by side and not notice any difference. But their appearance is where the similarity ends. A business plan based on vision, enthusiasm and purpose will trump your traditional business plan every time.

The Leadership Commitment
O
wning and operating a business isn’t something that one undertakes lightly. It requires a huge leap of faith. It’s both exciting to live your entrepreneurial dream, and at the same time scary because there’s no guarantee you’ll succeed. As the leader of your business, you’re the one with the ultimate accountability for the business’ success. That is a heavy responsibility to bear.
Two Leadership Commitments You Can’t Ignore When you get into business, you make two significant and serious leadership commitments:
1. To yourself. You’ve given up the
security of working for others (perhaps even a steady pay check) to follow your passion and vision. Stepping away from the familiar requires a great deal of courage, and you owe it to yourself to put your absolute best foot forward to achieve your vision. Nobody else will do it for you.
2. To everyone else. You’ve made a commitment to all of the people who are impacted by your business: your family, your partners, your investors, your employees... Just to name a few. All of these people rely on your business to various degrees and all have a vested interest in your business succeeding. For many of us, it’s easier to focus on the commitments we make to others than to those we make to ourselves. We can’t stress enough 46
Gulf Insider May 2018
however, how important it is to honor the commitment you’ve made to yourself.
Leadership Takes Self-Knowledge
If you’re feeling as though you’ve lost touch with your own motivation and commitment; consider what James Kouzes and Barry Posner said in their book, The Leadership Challenge: Leadership is an art, a performing art. And in the art of leadership, the artist’s instrument is the self. The mastery of the art of leadership comes with the mastery of the self. Ultimately, leadership development is a process of self-development. The quest for leadership is first an inner quest to discover who you are. Through selfdevelopment comes the confidence needed to lead. Self-confidence is really awareness of and faith in your own powers. These powers become clear and strong only as you work to identify and develop them. Knowing yourself well-really and truly well-is central to your ability to lead and to realize the commitment you made to making your business dream a reality. Self-knowledge will give you the insight, the strength and the confidence you need to lead because to lead others, you must first lead yourself. And to lead yourself, you must know yourself. It may come across with a bit of a “new age” or “self help” spin, but the truth is that the role of the leader is the role of the self. Think about it. The word “leader” carries no connotation of the work or tasks involved, like the words “plumber” or “programmer,” “teacher” or “engineer,” or even “manager” do. Rather, “leader” evokes personal
qualities like vision, strength, integrity, honesty, confidence-or whatever your particular definition is. So if leadership is about the person, and not about the work, to become a powerful leader you must work on yourself as a person. You need to know yourself, and continually develop yourself to be more and more of the person you want to be.
Take a Look in the Mirror
Often, under the pressure to do right by others, you end up ignoring that first and vitally important commitment: the one you made to yourself. Many business owners cite “not letting others down” as the main reason for persevering in a barely surviving business long after it’s stopped giving them the personal satisfaction or the financial rewards they wanted for themselves. Don’t let it get to that point for you. Remember to honor the commitment you made to yourself when you started your business. The commitment to create an extraordinary business. The commitment to lead your company to success with clarity, purpose and enthusiasm. If you feel lost, take a look in the mirror and re-acquaint yourself with the entrepreneur, the business owner, and the leader who got you where you are today. They may need some nurturing, some support, some guidance, but they’re there. Further Reading Leadership the E-Myth Way Emotions and the Business Leader Delegate, Rejuvenate & Create

7 Ways To Deal With A Co-worker Who Drags Down The Team
T
o be more productive AND satisfied at work you need to limit your interaction with toxic coworkers. These people are usually unhappy in their jobs and their lives, and foster a negative work environment. Here’s 7 tips:
1. Set time limits - Offer a moment
of sympathy, and no more. Unless “psychiatrist” or “psychologist” is in your job title, it’s not your responsibility to boost someone’s mood at work. You can offer to listen for five minutes or simply explain that you’re overloaded or trying to meet a deadline (even if your not).
2. Don’t engage - Try to refrain from offering advice on a personal matter or comparing it to something you’ve been through. This will only encourage further discussion. You can simply say: “I’m sorry to hear that.” If you’re talking to a colleague who is dissatisfied with work, try not to agree, because that will likely egg them on. 3. Keep it professional - If you must interact regularly because you work closely together, develop clear agendas for meetings and have a set end time. Stay on professional topics only. If it veers off course, change the subject back to the work topic at hand.
4. Dive into work - There are those
who like to come to your office or desk and chat incessantly. This is distracting and can add time to your day. Politely say you need to finish work on time, and you must get back to the grind.
5. Throw it back - When you are dealing with the perpetual pessimist, tell them why you like your job and why you are happy at the company. Eventually they should get the hint that you’re not the best person to complain to. 6. Create deterrents - If you have a door, close it several times a day, and place a sign on it that simply states: “Please do not disturb — tight deadline” or “On an important call.” You can have several prepared that you rotate. It’s tougher if you’re in an open plan office. If you work well listening to music and can get away with it at your office, wear headphones. There are many co-workers who will still think it’s OK to come up and tap you on the shoulder, but it should deter some. 7. Confront the problem head on
- If you feel comfortable doing so, it may be worthwhile to tell the person you cannot listen to his or her issues anymore. Explain why you cannot engage with him or her on personal matters anymore, perhaps because chatting a lot at work translates into longer hours, disruption of your concentration or missed deadlines.
The Only 3 Skills That Great Leaders Need
M
ark Hurd, the president of Oracle Corporation, wants to simplify the leadership dialogue. “There’s a powerful tendency to overcomplicate the whole notion of leadership,” he writes in a recent post on LinkedIn. “In my own career, and with the great executives on my team now, I try to keep the leadership formula pretty simple.” For his own purposes, Hurd has distilled the essentials of great leadership to three things:
1. Getting the strategy right 2. Executing that strategy 3. Putting the right people in the right places Hurd says “getting the strategy right” is more important now than ever before because of how fast today’s world moves. “Consumer tastes and needs are shifting faster and more dramatically than ever before. Do you have a sustainable strategy... that lets you keep pace with this relentless upheaval?” he asks. Once created, that strategy is useless without people who can execute it. Hurd says it’s up to the CEO to “drive operational excellence that brings the strategy alive.” And part of doing that is his third pointer — put the right people in place. “After formulating and communicating the right strategy, and optimizing operations to execute that strategy, CEOs and other top leaders then must be able to build management teams that truly understand the big picture,” he explains.

Genesis G70 Gulf Insider tests the new compact saloon from the world’s newest luxury car brand.
I
’m guessing at least 50% of those reading this article will be unaware of the Genesis brand. Well. Genesis is to Hyundai what Lexus is to Toyota, and what Infiniti is to Nissan, and just like Lexus and Infiniti, aims to take on the luxury German brands by offering equivalently high standards of quality and vehicle refinement. “Genesis has been very well received in the Middle East, and the Genesis G70 will be an exciting new chapter in our story,” said Altar Yilmaz, Genesis General Manager for the Africa and Middle East region. “For many of our potential customers, this is the Genesis they have been waiting for.”

The G70 is the latest addition to the Genesis range, and is their ‘entry level’ compact saloon, a direct rival to the Mercedes C Class and BMW 3 Series. As a brief introduction to Genesis, there’s currently two other models in
their range, the larger G90 (a Mercedes S Class / BMW 7 Series rival) and their mid-sized G80 and G80 Sport (E Class / 5 Series rival). The G70 is definitely aimed at the younger, sportier market and offers two engine choices, a turbocharged 3.3-liter V6, and a 2 liter turbocharged 14. The larger V6 provides an impressive 370 horsepower (510 Nm torque), giving zero-100 kph in 4.7 seconds. It has Launch Control to maximize power control in acceleration mode. The 2 liter turbocharged I4 has 252 horsepower (353 Nm). As things worked out I only got to drive the larger engine car, so cannot comment on the 2 liter other than to say

The car was quite while driving with little wind noise noticeable, even at high speeds. Also very similar to Bentley are the diamondquilted leather seats and metal-rimmed switchgear in the G70. I was impressed with the G70. Saudi Women React To Being Overcharged for Driving Lessons By Teaching Each Other for Free
Women in Saudi Arabia are sharing images showing that it costs up to six times more for women to take driving courses than it does for men. Women with some driving experience (such as those whose husbands or family members have taken them out) are required 30 hours of training, while those without any experience are required 90 hours. The average price of one hour of driving practice costs 60-75 riyals, meaning women without experience will pay nearly $1800 just to get the hours needed to qualify for a license. For men, it costs a little more than $100. All-women’s colleges are also offering

driving courses with hefty price tags. One Saudi Snapchat user shared an image of the cost of courses at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University; one driving course there costs 2400 riyals. Comparatively, a website for the Saudi Ministry of the Interior shows it only costs men 435 riyals for a driving course. Saudi women immediately took to Twitter to condemn the inequity. Hanaa Aldhafery, a 32-year-old Saudi woman, tweeted, “Are there any volunteers who are ready to train others to drive for free? (And the training will be after Ramadan because we don’t want any
trouble with the law and the training will be in parking lots away from crowded places) If the answer is yes write the name of your city in the hashtag.” Taking Aldhafery’s lead, under the hashtag #( مستعده_ادرب#iam_ready_to_ train_you), both women and men who know how to drive began offering to teach nearby women. If those without experience can get some road time with their generous neighbors, they’ll only be required to complete 30 hours of training, saving them nearly $900. “Training in Al Qasim provided if the trainee can provide the car,” one woman tweeted in Arabic. Another Twitter user offered to lend his car to up to five women who couldn’t afford to rent a vehicle so that they could learn. On Alrasd, a show on the local channel Ekhbariyah, one guest challenged driving schools’ decision to charge women more, calling it a clear example of discrimination. Abuldraham Allahim, a lawyer and guest on the show, said it only cost his male driver 460 riyals, but it will cost his daughter 2400. “Are you training girls to drive a rocket with these prices?” he quipped.

Dubai: Smart Number Plates that connect directly to Police soon to be launched Dubai’s authorities are planning to introduce a digital number plate capable of tracking drivers locations and informing the police of bad driving. The new plates will be synced up to a user’s account so that parking fees, road fines or licence plate renewals would be remotely taken from drivers by cops. The city’s police claim the technology will be used mainly to help emergency services locate accidents. It is claimed they could also change to display a special alert or some other form of warning if they’re stolen. But concerns are growing that the plates will cause privacy issues as they could be used to catch speeding drivers. Sultan Abdullah al-Marzouqi, the head of the Vehicle Licensing Department at Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) dispelled the rumours, claiming the introduction of the plates will make life ‘easier for drivers’. ‘The digital plate, called Tag to Connect, is a smart screen that will replace the current metal plate,’ Sultan Abdullah Al Marzouqi told Khaleej Times. ‘With the digital plate installed in your car, you need not come to any RTA service centre every year in order to renew your vehicle plate – your car registration will be automatically renewed after passing the vehicle test.’ ‘The digital plate will also allow vehicles to connect with each other. That’s why it’s “Tag to Connect” – meaning, motorists can exchange information on traffic condition or if there is an accident on the road.
Bahrain – MPs plan to force expats to renew driving licences every 2 years is rejected Bahrain’s General Directorate of Traffic has rejected a proposal that would force expatriate drivers to renew their driving licences every two years, along with their residency permits, instead of every five years as currently the case for all drivers. The proposal by MPs Jalal Kadhim and Ghazi Al Rahma was rejected by the General Directorate of Traffic, that claimed such a bill would impose additional financial burdens on expats as well as violate their basic rights. In a written reply to the MPs, the General Directorate of Traffic stated: “The traffic system in the Kingdom stipulates that driving licenses must be renewed every five years. A period that is considered appropriate by the General Directorate of Traffic. Renewing driving licenses every two years is an additional financial burden on expats. The bill harms the rights of nonBahraini drivers to obtain driving licenses,” The General Directorate of Traffic added; “the bill discriminates between the rights of Bahraini and non-Bahraini drivers, against the Kingdom’s policies to protect rights and freedoms.” The matter was referred to the Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee for further study. Warning to Saudi ‘Sidewall skiers’ “Sidewall skiing,” — the perilous driving stunt that involves balancing a car on two wheels — is growing in popularity among young Saudi drivers, who risk their lives to show their skills and impress an audience. In 2013, a video of Saudi men changing their car tires while driving on two wheels went viral. People strongly criticized those youngsters and reacted via social media. Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, 23-year-old Saudi who lives in Tabuk, told Arab News he was doing sidewall skiing at the age of 19 when he started to hang out with his friends. “The easiest technique is to let some air out of the tires that will be on the ground so that the car can tip more easily, as well as keep its balance better,” he added. The stunt has gone beyond the local framework and reached the international channels, which convey some serious footage of the movements practiced by Saudi drivers. These performers who show off their risky skills through social media have a large worldwide audience as their crazy performances always leave people shocked. One of the most famous Saudi drifters and racers on Instagram, known as Abu Faza’a from Riyadh, who has 76,000 followers, told Arab News that the joy behind sand driving is that you are doing something crazy and fun but you are not harming anyone. “It needs good skills in driving and balancing, otherwise your car will drown in sands.” Saudi lawyer Dima Al-Shareef told Arab News: “At the beginning of 2017, the authorities began implementing the amendments to the traffic regulations which were adopted and focused on the fact that drifting, racing, sidewall skiing and other stunts are a traffic violation. The drifter is punished for the first time by having to park the vehicle for 15 days and fined SR20,000 ($5,333). He is then referred to the competent court to be considered for a prison sentence. “The second time the vehicle is booked for one month only, and the drifter fined SR40,000, and then referred to the competent court to be considered for a prison sentence,” she added. “The third time the vehicle is booked and the drifter fined SR60,000 and then transferred to the court who will look into the confiscation of the vehicle, or for the dirfter to be fined the value of the vehicle or the stolen car, and the drifter goes to jail.” 56

Bahrain: Traffic signals to blink 5 times before turning red In a bid to reduce accidents at junctions, traffic signals will flash five times before turning red to alert oncoming motorists. The new system was approved by the Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee and follows a proposal submitted last year by MP Mohammed Al Maarifi and four other MPs, hoping to reduce traffic accidents and violations at intersections. According to the proposal, traffic signals at the main intersections in the Kingdom would be adjusted to “blink” five times before turning red to notify approaching drivers that they have to stop soon. Al Maarifi affirmed that his proposal would reduce the number of accidents caused by the sudden stopping of drivers when traffic signals turn from green to yellow.
