It’s finally June! I may be biased — it’s my birthday month — but I think it’s the best month of the year. Cold weather is officially gone and the great outdoors are calling. It’s time to get in a kayak, lay out on the beach, jump in the pool and go for evening walks. Sprinklers are for keeping our yards hydrated, but they’re also a source of endless entertainment for kids of all ages. Mason jars can hold a glass of refreshing sweet tea or be the perfect temporary home for lightning bugs. Summer brings a welcome change of pace that we’re all craving.

Outdoor events in our county like the Hot Air Balloon Festival, Dragon Boat Festival and Top of the Hops Beer Festival encourage us to try something new — in one month, you could ride in a hot air balloon, raise money for children’s programs by participating in a rowing competition and sample hundreds of beers.

In the next two weeks, there’s also a Fishing Rodeo, a huge community crawfish boil and the largest cycling event in Alabama.

We live in a great place. Let’s get out and enjoy it. I’ll see you there — don’t forget your sunscreen!

he Foley Sports Complex will be full of hot air on Father’s Day weekend as the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, along with sponsorship from Tanger Outlets, presents the 10th annual Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival.

“For many, this event brings thoughts of brightly colored balloons gracing the skies, arts and crafts, entertainment and loads of family fun,” said Chamber President/CEO Donna Watts.

The event features more than 50 hot air balloonists from across the country taking to the skies on both mornings. Plus, attendees came get up close and personal as the hot air balloons and their pilots light up the evening skies at the nightly balloon glows, scheduled for Friday and Saturday night. Hot air balloons carry passengers up to 25 feet in the air, giving them a bird’s eye view of the festival. The balloons are tied to the ground using ropes while passengers experience a smooth ascent and descent.

The event includes Disc Connected K-9 World Famous Frisbee Dog Show, live musical entertainment, activities, vendors and a kids’ zone, which includes the opportunity to pet baby alligators.

Balloon Rides

Hot Air Balloon Tethered Rides are scheduled for Friday and Saturday Night. Hot Air Balloons carry passengers up to 25 feet in the air giving them a bird’s eye view of the festival.

Hot Air Balloons are tied to ground using ropes while passengers experience a smooth ascent and descent in the balloon.

Get behind the scenes

All of the aspects of the weekend seem to come together magically — after all, isn't a hot air balloon a magical thing? But the reality is that it requires the help of over 300 volunteers working behind the scenes as well as in plain sight. Three hundred people filled with pride for this community and this event and that help bring huge smiles and fond memories to attendees of all ages.

Become a volunteer and you will find an assortment of opportunities. From set-up to working with children to manning booths — and even being part of a balloon crew.

Volunteers will receive a free official 2014 Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival t-shirt and a volunteer parking pass.

une 12 at approximately 11:13 p.m. will mark the date of this month’s full moon for Orange Beach. June’s Full Moon is called a Full Strawberry Moon because June is a month for harvesting strawberries.

All Full Moon names date back to the Native Americans, as tribes gave special names to the Moons to keep track of the seasons. The City of Orange Beach Wind and Water Learning Center has started hosting complimentary Full Moon Paddles for the public to encourage people to get out on the water and enjoy this monthly occurrence. Participants must supply their own kayak, paddle, PFD and white light, as regulated by the U.S.C.G. The group will depart from the Wind and Water Learning Center, located behind the Orange Beach Public

Library at 26267 Canal Road. American Canoe Association certified instructors will lead the paddle, operating the group in a diamond shaped formation with one lead paddler, a sweeper in the rear, and two paddlers on either side. The paddle will take place in scenic Wolf Bay and move Eest so participants can catch the sunset on the return trip. This event is a great way to meet fellow paddlers and enjoy the local waters on a kayak.

f you are looking for a little summer fun with the kids, why not try your hand at crabbing along the Alabama Gulf Coast? With more than 60 blue crab species in our waters, you can enjoy crabbing with a little knowledge and a bit of luck. When visiting our local backwaters, a pier or dock provides a great opportunity to catch crab while enjoying a little family time.

For crab traps and nets, fish carcasses are great bait — plus it is a great way to recycle after your fishing trip.

Local bait shops and beach stores carry both crab nets and the larger plastic coated metal crab traps.

For crab nets, first secure your bait in the center section of the device. Then tightly attach the net to the pier using a rope. Drop your net into the water, wait 30 minutes and check for blue crabs. Continue repeating these steps until you have a catch. For crab baskets, follow the same steps, but let these devices soak for at least 24 hours.

Once you successfully catch a blue crab, remember they have claws and will use them, so always handle with care.

Blue crab meat is soft, sweet and juicy — a perfect addition to your seafood dish.

Cycling for cancer awareness

W

hat began as a simple charity bike ride to raise money for cancer victims has turned into the largest biking event in the state of Alabama — the Ride Yellow, currently celebrating eight years of cycling for a cause.

The race was founded in 2007 by Ann White-Spunner and Mary Trufant to raise awareness of cancer and to get support for their mission of inspiring and helping people suffering from cancer. Since its founding, the ride has raised more than $392,000 for various cancer-related causes and support groups.

“We’re riding for those who have lost their fight and for the people who continue to inspire us with their bravery in fighting the disease,” Trufant said. “It’s inspiring to see so many riders and a lot of supporters come out to help raise money and to lift up these people battling cancer.”

Riders from around the Southeast, and even Maryland, will be on hand for this year’s event, in what Trufant believes will be the biggest Ride Yellow event to date.

Trufant said she and the organizers wouldn’t be able to continue the event without the support of great volunteers, the City of Bay Minette and corporate sponsors like Infirmary Health and Wind Creek Casino.

Trufant encouraged anyone with even a casual interest in bike riding to come out for the ride and reminded riders that everyone would stay together behind the pace car for the first six miles as a tribute route for those who lost their battle with cancer.

reat music, delicious food and fun times are all on the docket for the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce’s Second Annual Crawfish Bash.

North Baldwin Chamber Director Ashley Jones said that while the Chamber was pleased with the turnout at the inaugural bash last year, she hopes to see more people come and enjoy themselves at this year’s event.

“It’s a great chance for folks to come and enjoy food, music and fellowship with one another,” Jones said. “It’s going to be another great event, and families are certainly welcome.”

Included in the ticket price are all of the foods (crawfish, corn, potatoes, sausage) as well as drinks (soda from Pepsi in Atmore, beer from Fairhope Brewing).

There will be kids activities on site as well as music entertainment from DJ MsOnDaGo, Marsha Stevens and Brad Lawley. Tickets can be purchased at the North Baldwin Chamber Office or from any NBC Board Member.

What’s in a Name?

Confusion amongst the aisles of a wine shop is not all that uncommon. Some wine labels are straightforward (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, etc.), easy to understand and you know what you’re getting. Others are not.

Red blends are not as forthright and sometimes include confusing terminology. Before one can fully understand what these words mean, a comprehension of Bordeaux, the mother of all red blends, is essential.

In a nutshell, a Bordeaux is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France. Bordeaux wines are strictly regulated and can only be blended from two or more of the permitted grapes — Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.

The words Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Médoc or Graves on a bottle of Bordeaux represents its sub-region and particular wine style.

Médoc and Graves are Left Bank wines (from the left bank of the Garonne River) and are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, but usually have a significant portion of Merlot. These wines are big and bold and are usually meant to be cellared before drinking. Saint-Émilion and Pomerol are Right Bank wines (on the right bank of the Dordogne River) and are typically a Merlotdominant fruity blend with minimal influence of oak and meant to be drunk young.

Common names found on red blend labels

Claret – In the United States, a Claret is simply a red wine in the style of Bordeaux. Generally associated with a dry, dark red Bordeaux.

Cuvee – Simply means “blend.”

GSM – GSM is an acronym used for a red blend made from the grapes Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre. Commonly found in Australian wines.

Meritage – In the late 1980s, a group of California winemakers trademarked the word “Meritage” (rhymes with heritage) as a true Bordeaux produced outside of the Bordeaux region. The word is a combination of the words merit and heritage. Winemakers using the Meritage label must follow the same practices used in Bordeaux.

in a night, and you'll get pretty close to breaking even with the ultra-light beers in terms of calories.

If you must go with a lowcalorie beer, consider Hoegaarden (pronounced 'who-garden'), a white wheat beer produced in Belgium. It contains about 150 calories a bottle, so while it is no Miller 64, it is relatively low in calories.

“Herbie’s Game”

ince June is International Crime Month, it seems only fitting to feature a little crime fiction for the book review this month — specifically, Timothy Hallinan’s amusing “Herbie’s Game,” the fourth book in his Junior Bender mystery series.

Hallinan’s main character, the jovial professional burglar Junior Bender, finds himself in the middle of a murderous plot in this novel, as he seeks the perpetrator who stole a list of clients from the city’s top hitman finder and the people who killed the man who taught him the crime game – Herbie Mott.

Bender journeys across Los Angeles and meets a bevy of amusing and disturbing figures throughout the city’s shady un-

derworld, but never loses his trademark wit and penchant for clever barbs.

Along the way, Bender not only questions other people, but asks himself why he continues to make his living as a criminal.

Lovers of the detective novel will find Hallinan’s work to be more jovial than his crime fiction predecessors Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, but his ability to create fast-paced and humorous dialogue helps move the plot along in a satisfying way.

The book is, admittedly, perhaps not the best crime novel I’ve ever read, but it would be a perfect read for a nice afternoon at the beach or a rainy day read on your sofa — preferably with a nice hot cup of tea.

Let's be honest: we really don't need all those shoes. As I look through my own closet, I see several pairs of shoes that are in good condition that I simply don't wear anymore. They only go with that one outfit, my style has changed or I just have way too many ballet flats.

I could drop my unused shoes off at a thrift store, where they may or may not be bought — or I could donate them to our local Soles4Souls shoe drive, where I know they will be used to provide job opportunities and footwear to people around the world.

Soles4Souls, Inc. advances the fight

against global poverty through social enterprise — a term describing charities that use proven business practices to create positive social change. Dragon Boat Festival hits the Delta June 7 Teams are registering fast to participate in the newest sport to hit Mobile and Baldwin County.

The inaugural FUSE Project Dragon Boat Festival will allow participants to raise funds while rowing in a 46foot Chinese rowboat. Thirty teams have signed up for the adrenaline filled racing action and to raise pledges for the FUSE Project and its community partners. Each participant is raising $60 individually, with that money providing 2.5 hours of teaching for at-risk children at Scarborough Middle School and educating Mobile and Baldwin County middle school children about wise stewardship of water quality and living resources of Alabama’s estuaries.

What is Dragon Boat Racing?

Hong Kong style dragon boats are 46 feet long and holds 20 people. A drummer sits in a seat seat above the first two paddlers and pounds away while the team rows and a steerer guides the boat.

What is the FUSE Project?

The FUSE Project's goal is to support tangible, realistic projects that will benefit children on the Alabama Gulf Coast. The nonprofit organization supports existing philanthropies with specific project ideas and grassroots efforts by motivated members of the community. Past projects include funding an after school program for atrisk youth, sponsoring a Distinguished Young Woman contestant, supporting the Big House Foundation and funding Light of the Village ministries.

Find out Father’s Day weekend at the FloraBama Fishing Rodeo. It is, organizers say, “the funnest fishing tournament on the Gulf Coast.”

More than 30 fish categories are fair game, including the fun category which will be comprised of the aforementioned croaker, pin fish, spade fish, blue crab and sting ray. There is also a big-game Calcutta category for tuna, dauphin, wahoo and swordfish.

It may all be in fun, but more than $130,000 in cash in prizes is on the line, including an 18-foot center console boat for the winner of the Legendary Marine Master Angler award, and the Paradise Lodge Top Lady Angler wins a four-night, three-day fishing trip for four to Paradise Lodge.

Oh, the croaker. It’s a fish used to catch other fish, and it usually doesn’t get much bigger than a pound. It makes a croaking sound by vibrating its air bladders to attract females during spawning season.
