Preparation, Black Friday: The perfect plan of attack

Dedicated shoppers understand that Black Friday sales come at a price. There’s waking up in the wee-hours, stumbling through a dark house for clothes and coffee, cold morning air and long lines for door busters. Oftentimes, the day after Thanksgiving brings more negative results than indigestion and surprisingly shrunken jeans. After a morning filled with stress, wanted items are often sold out or unavailable in the needed size, color or theme.

But a little planning goes a long way. Some internet research or a Thanksgiving evening sitting amid sale papers can mean time well spent and could make deal dreams a reality.

Step 1: Create a shopping list

Start by writing down all the names of family and friends for whom you intend to buy Christmas gifts. While you may not know what item to buy them, a list of names will get your wheels turning and help guide your store map.

Step 2: Sale focus Peruse sale papers and websites to find deals that fit the likes and wants of those on your list.

The Bass Pro Shops catalogue might tempt you with incredible discounts, but if your shopping list contains all women, that might not be your best bet. (Save our lovely huntresses and female fishing enthusiasts!) Same goes for toy stores. No matter how cute the wares, focus your attention on the shopping list and avoid toy stores if the children have all grown up.

Step 3: Timing is everything Once you’ve selected your stores, see which one opens earliest, second, third, etc. Be sure to look for door buster deals, limited availability, early bird coupons and Thanksgiving Day opportunities.

Plan your trip based on opening times and most desired items. I’ve been known to make a dash by Old Time Pottery just to secure my early bird coupon, go get other door busters at different places,

then come back to shop and use my discount.

Step 4: Early is everything Arriving at shops early is a good idea since many people are after the same thing you are. Lines can wrap around buildings and parking can be impossible, so get in line and prepare yourself for a long day. Eat a good breakfast, dress according to weather range, be courteous and try not to get trampled.

Step 5: Call in reinforcements If friends or family members are available, take them with you. Helpers can grab one item while you go for another. Get what’s most important first; there will be time for strolling later. If friends are as enthralled as you are, coordinate your schedules together. Maybe you can grab items for her at one store, and she can grab for you at the next.

At the end of the day, take time to soak those tired feet. Eat leftovers instead of slaving in the kitchen. And don’t forget to show off all your deal steals to your ever-so-interested spouse or call up a friend to brag.

Christmas doesn’t have to break the bank, just use those marvelous multi-tasking skills and get ready for some holiday fun.

Family activities spark holiday spirit

Swift-Coles Home Holiday Open House, Bon Secour Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can visit the Swift-Coles Home, a 16-room, 10,000 square foot historic tidewater mansion overlooking the Bon Secour River. The mansion will be decorated for Christmas, and admission will be $10.

It is currently owned by the Baldwin County Historic Development Commission and operated in a joint venture with the Baldwin County Department of Archives and History. Step back into 1900s “river life” and see a glimpse of early Baldwin County.

According to co.baldwin.al.us, the home was built first as a four room “Dog Trot” house on the point of land where Schoolhouse Creek flows into the Bon Secour River. Charles and Susan Swift moved into the home prior to the turn of the 20th century and constructed additions as the need arose. Initially a downstairs wing was added, and in 1908 the upstairs additions began with the completion in 1910 creating the 16-room mansion that dominates the site today.

The couple raised their 11 children here and children of the original Swift family lived in the home until 1976. Amelia Swift and her husband Charlie Wakeford lived in the residence until moving nearer the river and opening the world famous "Meme's" Restaurant. The last Swift family member to live in the home was Mrs. Susan Nell Swift Marshall, upon whose death in 1976 the home was purchased by Mr. Nick Coles of Gulf Shores, according the website.

Nick Coles Owned and operated the Friendship House Restaurant and Antique Center in Gulf Shores and had long admired the Swift Home in Bon Secour. After the purchase, Mr. Coles preserved the home he loved and appreciated. His fine collection of antiques is displayed in the home today and people well remember his gracious hospitality. Nick Coles left the house to the Baldwin County Historic Development Commission and it is now operated as a house museum.

Las Vegas Golf, a shop at the Tanger Outlets in Foley has something for sports enthusiasts of all shapes and sizes, according to owner Paula Segal.

“We will have sales throughout the store,” she said. “Some of our specials will include Ladies Stomtech Performance Jackets, regular $40, now $12.99; 10 percent off all US kids golf equipment; Mens Glen Echo Full Zipper, Stretch Tech Rain Gear, Waterproof and Breathable regular $110, now $29.99; plus 20 percent off all used golf equipment.”

Malinda Kichler at Parkway Equipment explained that the store has a special item on sale for the holidays.

“Cajun Friers are hot item for guys,” she divulged. “We offer $20 off on six-gallon fryers.”

But for the guys on the shopping list who don’t cook, the store offers traditional, yard items.

“We have a great steel line—blowers and trimmers—we’re a guy place.”

Rick Lowell of Rick’s Gun said the store offers a variety of items for men on the Christmas list.

“We’ve got guns, pool cues, camouflage cloth-

ing, jewelry, guitars and accessories for guns like holsters,” he explained.

He also noted one of this year’s hot items.

“We’ve been selling a lot of small, concealable hand guns—self-protection type of stuff.”

Apparel Colony Shop owners Kim McLemore and Debbie Moffett said to visit their store for fashion items and variety.

According to McLemore, “Our fashion item that’s big this season is the poncho and the highlow—a dress or tunic where the front is shorter than the back,” she explained. “The tunic with leggings are great. Everybody buys them.”

“We’ve got a lot of vintage-style items—things with lace or a mix of fabrics. It’s such a mixture of stuff. These days, people want differemt styles—it’s not just one big thing.”

Plus various accessories complete outfits and holiday shopping.

“Our store is just full of everything new.

We’ve got some great jewelry from a Croatian artist that are big metal pieces.”

Moffet chimed in that must-haves from Colony Shop include “cashmere sweaters and an array of scarves, faux furs and some great looking belts.”

Barbara Levitt and Carol Eberlein of M&F Casuals offered some advice on clothing items for the holiday season.

“M&F Casuals welcomes back our highly successful shopping campaign, ‘12 days of Christmas.’ Of course we will continue to focus on specific vendors and items to be promoted with discounts and gifts with purchases. But we will be offering much more in terms of service and the overall shopping experience. To tell any more would give away our secrets—everyone should just stop by the store to find out more.

They said that M&F also helps shoppers stay within their holiday budgets.

“We have many gifts that appeal to all ages, starting as low as $10. We will be participating in all the national advertising promotions for Vera Bradley, Brighton and Cinda B. In addition, we just introduced a great bath and body product line called Archipelago Botanicals. Many of

They offer styles that portray the uniqueness of 2012.

“Popular purchases this year center around the ‘look good, feel good’ theme. Colored denim and all the latest fashion trends are still important, but the customer is ultimately looking for quality and uniqueness in her clothing and accessories. Being able to find a complete affordable outfit, from clothes, jewelry and shoes all at one time and place has been exciting for our customers. Bottom line, we are listening to our customers and giving them every reason to shop locally in Fairhope.”

Food Items/Restaurants Jason Newsom of Big Daddy’s Grill warned that holiday shopping can create quite an appetite. It’s a good thing his restaurant offers money saving options and good, Southern food.

“We have daily lunch specials and we’re known for seafood and good hamburgers—including the Bid Daddy Burger with several cheeses, sautéed onions and bacon,” he began.

He said that Big Daddy’s Grill is proud to sponsor the Christmas boat parade held Dec. 15 to help spread holiday cheer.

The Happy Olive owner Elizabeth Styron said the new shop offers unique items and gift baskets.

“We have various sizes of olive oil and vinegar and we do gift baskets, cheese straws , stuffed olives, olive salad, gourmet mustard, olive-oil based bath and body goods, plus household goods like cleaner,” she said. “We also have pewter pieces that are really unique gifts.”

She said even though her store just opened, many shoppers have already found a favorite item.

“The olive oil has really been a huge hit; the store is an interesting and new concept for downtown Fairhope.”

Tommy Cain, owner of Piggly Wiggly, said he’s helping family cooks get ready for holiday parties.

“We have before Thanksgiving sales—turkeys are 68 cents a pound with a $40 order,” he divulged. “Find all your supplies here, especially wines and beers—we have the largest variety in the grocery business. There are over 4,000 in Fairhope and Foley (locations) and Loxley has more than usual. We’re more than just a grocery store with wines up to $300 a bottle, plus Fairhope and Foley have wine specialists.”

Punta Clara manager Kim Clay said that the candy kitchen offers sweet holiday gift items.

“We’ve got lots of gift baskets, holiday tins and combination gift packages, plus made to order gift baskets, as always,” she beamed. “We also have stocking stuffer gift packages with a little bit of everything in them.”

Jewelry Parke Place Jewelry owner, Paul Parke said the store is getting ready for the holiday season.

“We have a lot of popular holiday gifts— we’ve been selling a lot of chains and pendants and silver jewelry,” he said. “We also have the largest selection of pre-owned jewelry and that saves people a lot of money.”

Glen Manning of Manning Jewelry offers customers a wide variety to fit every style and budget.

“We’ve brought in a number of new lines, including high-end items,” he said. “Nina Nguyen, that’s a real interesting line made out of sterling silver and natural gem stones like geodes.”

“We also have a number of fashion lines that are affordable like Gabrielle that was brought in this Christmas. Colored gem stones are popular and we’ve tried to stock up on that, as well. The fashion jewelry has become popular—that’s the style now, the heavy-looking pieces made out of copper. Demetrus Ball is a recycled aluminum line that’s been very popular. We also brought in better lines like Natalie K.” He said they also accommodate shoppers with special interests.

“Bridal is always popular at Christmas and we have one of our best selections of bridal that we’ve ever had.”

Roy Rose Jewelry owner Roy Howell admits that he’s seen trends in this year’s jewelry purchases.

“The number one hot item this year is the sideways cross necklaces,” he divulged. “The beads and charms are still hot, especially click on charms that are easily removable for bracelets and necklaces, plus Pandora style beads— we have two lines, Reflections and Kera beads.

He also said that shoppers can expect great deals all year long.

“We do have watches at 40 percent off, every watch in the store, all day long.”

Ware Jewelers manager April Zellner, explained that popular lines abound at their store.

Specialty Stores Trim-A-Tree at the Foley Art Center hosts a huge variety of gift items, according to Zana Price of the Performing Arts Association.

“We do have unique, one of a kind gifts, art, floral arrangements and jewelry,” she explained.

“There’s art work such as pottery and china painting; no two are alike and they’re for children all the way to men’s offices. It’s our 47th annual Trim-A-Tree and it goes on for six weeks, from November’s second Friday to Christmas Eve on Mondays-Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

“There are always new things coming in,” she revealed. “New artists and crafters join throughout the season. Artists can sometimes make other items for special orders. Plus we have a gourmet pantry—Mayhaw jelly (scuppernong) and fig preserves and jams, sauces, cheese straws in lemon and pecan. It’s like an arts and crafts show, but longer. You’ll find items from $2-$1,200.”

Some of the less expensive and unique art items include Santas painted on sand dollars and star fish, plus every kind of Santa, snowman and Rudolf.

Price said they even offer a new item—bras made into purses for breast cancer awareness.

Joe Kitchens of Furniture City explained that relaxing gifts are popular to offer a break from the busy season.

“We always do well with recliners, gliders and sofas,” he offered.

Plus, Furniture City has trendy options and long-time favorites.

“A lot of leather continues to be a big seller and the polyesters that have textures and patterns and are big sellers.”

Lee Drug Store’s Lenora Hedden said that variety and one-stop shopping bring customers to their store.

“We have personalized items like cake plates, plus Cotton Colors ornaments, collegiate ornaments including Alabama and Auburn, Magnolia Lane, Glory Haus and many more ornaments,”

she said. “We also offer Brushfire design T-shirts and we have a lot of jewelry. We just have a variety of things now that we didn’t have in the past including candles and bags. We have a lot of Initial earrings, a baby section, cards and scarves.

We’re working on a men’s section and we have a good variety of frames.”

Pickers Paradise helps meet customers’ music needs whether at the beginner or expert level, according to Beth Osborne.

“We have student guitars that they can start lessons on and a bag that comes with everything including straps,” she said. “We have books and instructors here. Plus, gift certificates are a great idea for gifts that go a long through life with them—it gets that child started in music. It’s for all ages…if someone’s retired, or for wives to get for husbands who had always wanted to take guitar lessons.”

She said they also have beginner, intermediate and adult solid-wood guitars, plus instructors for violin, piano, base, banjo, mandolin and cello.

Osborne added that, “We sell everything except drums, brass and woodwinds, but can order them. Pickers Paradise does have accessories for drum, brass and woodwind instruments.”

At Furniture City, Joe Kitchens said they plan to have a Black Friday recliner sale with 20 to 25 percent off the regular retail price.
