Qipong keeps us young: Moving bodies and spirits

BY JESSICA JONES “It’s all a matter of controlling your own body— slowly, deliberately and with feeling.”

The words slipped from Qigong Instructor Ron Driesbach as smoothly as the motions of his arms.

He shared information about Qi (life force) gong (work or rejuvenation) before Friday’s 10 a.m. class held at the Foley Senior Center.

The martial art is based on Chinese medicine, he explained, as he gave attendees a handout that explained the titles, motions and physical benefits of qigong positions.

Students moved their bodies slowly from pose to pose, breathing as Driesbach instructed.

“Two hands hold up the Heavens” works the upper back, neck and shoulders, while “Separate Heaven and Earth” stimulates the stomach and works the middle and upper back and shoulders as it stretches the spine, according to the handout.

Driesback told students that Qigong benefits physical wellbeing, because it moves every part of the body.

Attendee Lois Smith said she had come for a specific reason.

“I had a stroke and I want to get some mobility back,” she explained.

Another student said that she hoped to build up stamina, and that the 10 a.m. class fit conveniently into her schedule.

Driesback, a student of Qigong for 24 years, said that he had worked as a Chinese linguist, and became involved in Qigong in the 1950s.

He said that benefits include reduced stress, greater stamina and vitality, enhanced immune system, improved cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions, lower blood pressure and lessened risk of falling.

“The biggest thing is to persevere,” he divulged.

“It’s basically shifting weight from one foot to the other.”

“It’s relaxing—all you think about is your next move,” he beamed. “You live in the present and you won’t have near the stress that is common today.”

“It gives elasticity, poise and confidence; it’s one of the things that keeps me young.”

Model railroaders overcome obstacles

BY JESSICA JONES Tom Lindsay retired to Summerdale with his wife, Mary Ann, and took up model-railroad building as a new hobby. He began the story of said hobby by stretching forward in his chair, puffing from his pipe and saying, “Model railroading is like dating girls—we all have different tastes.”

It goes to show that one must have a sense of humor, and plenty of patience, too, when it comes to a hobby as intricate as this.

Tom and Mary Ann explained that theirs is a HO gauge, meaning from 1/8 inch to 1 inch. The layout features the C&O (Chesapeake and Ohio) in Virginia; it was formed in 1869. It shows the coal operation from West Virginia to Newport News— where Tom is from.

Tom’s long, gray train and passenger station are no figments of his own imagination. He used the actual blueprints and built the replica to scale. He instructs Mary Ann on the landscape design, and then she creates it.

The team believes in following dreams, and they don’t let Tom’s wheelchair get in their way.

“Most (new hobbyists) start small, with a 4 by 8 layout,” Tom divulged. “I started at the very top.”

But one has to start somewhere.

“I first went into layout in the early 2000s,” he began. “I didn’t know anything about this because it’s pretty technical.”

“This is nothing like fishing…or golf, where you just buy the equipment and go do it.”

The couple started a redesign in April, because they experienced problems with the first layout.

They had trouble reaching trains on the bottom level, so when problems occurred, they couldn’t get to them to work on them.

“I realize my mistakes,” he said. “We had to tear down all but the main level, and start over.”

Joe Mikulka and Mike Bendik help in the climbing, and laying track area, while Tom fixes, paints and decals rail cars, buildings and pieces of scenery.

Tom also wired electricity to the many pieces, and controls the entire track by computer.

Mary Ann added that, “he used about eight different computer programs to build and operate the layout.”

And that barely scratches the surface.

Tracks must be painted, ballasted, glued and cleaned, she said.

“It’s a multi-faceted hobby,” Tom explained.

“There’s carpentry, landscape, electrical—whatever a particular individual enjoys. The layout includes 30 to 40 electronic boards—it’s a Saturn windshield wiper motor that turns the tipple to load the coal.”

Mary Ann chimed in, “Tom and I do all our own carpentry. He gets on a dolly to go up under and fix things. Plus it’s a good hobby for him, in a wheel-

chair. It’s stimulating mentally, physically and socially.”

The hobby takes commitment, but both agreed that the rewards are worth it.

“Don’t ask me when will I be finished?” Tom smiled wide. “Never!”

“I’ve come to realize, if you say it’ll take two months, it’ll take four months, and it might take six.”

She said that Tom designed and built their home in 2002, and he included a room for the railroad, along with ramps and wheelchair accesses.

“I would just go nuts if all I could do is sit and watch that TV all day long,” he laughed.

The couple met in 1993 and have been overcoming obstacles ever since. Mary Ann recalled that Tom got his commercial driver’s license and they hit the road for 11 years, with Tom driving and handling the brakes, while she handled the straps.

Once the couple retired to Summerdale, they took up the model railroading hobby.

“It wasn’t until our early 60s that either one of us had the time, space or money,” Tom chuckled.

Mary Ann grinned as she looked over at her husband.

“He has great vision and imagination,” she said.

“I love and respect him so much.”

iGeneration: Coding The Future Does a new generation of readers mean a new generation of literature?

BY THERESA CORBIN Generation Z is supremely, globally and constantly connected. The newly sprouting generation is often being referred to as the “iGeneration” because they have never known a way of life without internet, having been born well into the 1990s. This group, with their use of new technologies, brings with them new phenomena such as sleep texting, cyber-bullying, and Carpel Tunnel syndrome in the wrists of teenage online “gamers.” And no other generation has been so isolated from reality, with the number of friends they have representing how much time they spend alone and online, rather than how outgoing they are.

Computer code seems to be woven into iGeneration’s genetics. Impatience is a major side effect of being born into a world based on fast information and instant lives. To meet the needs of their lives, they live at the speed of light; they have changed much of the world as we knew it, including the language we speak. The iGeneration has cut corners and rendered English down to a series of abbreviations and clipped, phonetic components. This leads their parents’ and grandparents’ generations to wonder that if they can’t be patient or even speak English well enough, will they have what it takes to survive in the real world.

However, this generation of “now-ness” has a few surprises up its sleeve. Just when we think they will zig, they zag. Just when we start to wonder if they will ever sit still, they spend hours devouring novel after novel. And just when we all go to the store, and buy a book about these kids, entitled the “Dumbest Generation,” they press a button on their iphone and download volumes of the most enchanting and enriching literature.

Whether it is on a Kindle, a Nook, or an actual real life book, fantasy is where most young adults’ taste resides. Most iGeneration readers, who seem so distracted by texts and Facebook, follow fantasies that travel in packs, like the massively popular “Harry Potter,” “Twilight,” or “The Hunger Games.”

And all of these books have been made into vastlygrossing motion pictures, attended by the young and mature alike.

Because these series grow in popularity, the world of serial fantasy is always looking to YA (YoungAdult) fiction for the next whisper that will turn into a roar. The newly published fiction, “Carlousia: The Passing of the Guard,” is growing in volume. The novel by E.G. Carter, is expected to be the next big YA fantasy series. It is a vividly crafted and adventurous read about three boys who are on a journey of a lifetime in which they learn fidelity and overcome unimaginable obstacles.

Carter has been told by many of his young readers, that “Carlousia” is fun.

“Kids of all ages are letting me know that they ac-

tually pictured themselves as one of the characters or could see themselves in the story.”

With so many distractions at the push of a button, Carter says that the iGeneration is still interested in sitting down with a good book because “reading still takes people to a place in their imagination that can entertain them and escape the stress of daily activities.”

He added that “modern gadgets don’t provide the same type of escape that readers have in a good book.”

Whether teens and tweens prefer to escape in a good novel about vampires, a series about witches and warlocks, or a story about a scrappy youth living in a dystopian society, at their core, the stories that become top sellers are always about the will to overcome, to do what is right, and to succeed against all odds. The stories that young people are reading are the same stories we have always been reading, writing, and telling; they are stories about the human condition that can and does inspire the imagination.

Carter agreed that the foundation of a good story doesn’t change, even though the medium might.

When asked if he thought that different generations look for different things in literature, he said, “I don’t necessarily believe they’re looking for different things; rather it is that young-adult literature is returning back to the basics. Even if the settings are fantasy, science fiction, mystery, or adventure, they all seem to have one thing in common … teaching our teens of today friendship, loyalty, honor, compassion, teamwork and sometimes putting others before yourself.”

When the author of “Carlousia” talks about the themes of good literature, he is not just talking about stories, he is speaking from experience.

When Carter says, “You can do anything you set your mind to do!” he is not just preaching, he is practicing.

“I have dyslexia,” Carter explained. “Writing a book with dyslexia is like trying to swim on the swim team, with cinder blocks tied to your feet.”

He said he wanted to show his two sons “that they could accomplish anything they set their minds on, with hard work and dedication. Don’t give me the excuse that what you are experiencing in life is hard, when I can write books with dyslexia.”

Carter knows the bounds of limitation, and has plowed through them. You could say that Carter’s first novel, “Carlousia: The Passing of the Guard,” is the literal and literary proof of the power of the human spirit to overcome. “Carlousia,” and Carter’s journey in writing it, will hopefully inspire more than the iGeneration’s imagination.

So, what can we expect from the future in the hands of this fast-paced, impatient group? Probably the unexpected, and if they keep reading, especially reading books like the “Carlousia” series, they may just surpass our un-expectations.

Kitchen Table Discussions with Ms. Cindy We are already having problems at home, and I feel we can work through them, but my wife seems to spend her day talking to the man that works in the next cubicle at her job. When I bring something up she says, “John and I talked about it and I think…” or “I ran that

by John and…” I feel that John is my wife’s husband and I’m just a roommate.

Is this normal, or am I over reacting?

Work place spouses serve many functions in a job setting. A good reason for a work place spouse is the teamwork and complementary talents that can go into getting a job done efficiently and in record time (two heads are better than one). Your wife and her friend may complement each other for the good of the company.

On the other hand, work place spouses can be damaging in many ways. Fellow workers may view this tight team as a clique and feel excluded, causing hard feelings at work. On a deeper level, however, a work place spouse is used to fill a dangerous void. In most cases one may use the work place spouse as a sounding board for their troubles at home, telling the most intimate of details. An individual talks intimately with the one who will listen without becoming defensive or irritable. The work place spouse has nothing to lose or gain, so listening is not threatening in any way.

Discussing things of an intimate nature with a work place spouse is short changing the marriage spouse. When a marriage is suffering, for whatever reason, learning to communicate effectively with each other is crucial to healing the marriage. Going outside the marriage to communicate is robbing the marriage of an essential nutrient needed for growth.

You are right to feel displaced by your wife’s work place spouse relationship.

Ask your wife to discuss the relationship with you and watch the reaction. She may feel you are jealous and respond in a defensive manner, not wanting to let go of the bond built by the communication closeness. Show her this article if she is not willing to hear how you feel. Be careful that you do not point fingers or become irritable. Just talk about how you feel as a result of the office bond. Her need to talk

Food for Thought:

Dejunk Your Tummy

BY DR. LINDA MITCHELL There is a reason why we feel a knot in the pit of our stomachs when we get stressed or upset.

Most of us are juggling jobs with tight deadlines and more work than we can humanly get done, families we want to enjoy and spend time with, and chores that need to be done to keep life moving forward. Mix in daily stress, fragile feelings, and unexpected dilemmas… and Houston, we have a problem. Stress delivers a one-two punch to our digestive systems. First it causes the release of hormones that not only divert energy to your muscles…so you can fight or flee…but it also slows digestion. That's a good thing if you need to get away from a bear but not so good when it occurs due to jobs or difficult people. Often we hit the drive through for fast foods or indulge in comfort foods (there is a reason they earned those tags). By doing this we compound the problem.

But, good news! Research shows that certain foods can boost your mood and soothe your tummy.

It's just as important what you do eat as what you do not. Run – not from a bear – but from dipped and fried, high caloric, fast food, to a greener, fresher environment. Drink more water and take time to enjoy each bite. To satisfy a sweet tooth opt for fresh fruit or choose recipes with healthy ingredients like peanut butter—and remember to serve small portions.

Chicken and Veggie Salad 4 cups mixed greens (romaine, baby spinach, or spring mix) 1 cup chicken, cooked and sliced (broiled, boiled or grilled or use rotisserie to save time) ½ cup beans, rinsed and drained (chickpeas, garbanzo, or frozen English peas) ½ cup carrots, shredded ½ cup tomatoes, chopped ¼ cup cucumber, chopped (optional) ¼ cup onion, diced (optional) 2 tablespoons Vinaigrette or Ranch (see recipes below)

Toss all ingredients together or serve Vinaigrette on the side. One of the great things about this salad is that you can add your favorite veggies or leave off those you don't care for. You can change up the portions to reflect those veggies you prefer.

Light Vinaigrette ½ cup vinegar, balsamic 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

¼ cup water 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon honey (increase honey to 1 tablespoon if you want it to be sweeter) 1 teaspoon garlic powder

In a container with a screw-on lid, combine ingredients and shake well. This will keep well in the refrigerator in the same container you mixed it in. Just shake before each use.

Light and Zesty Ranch Dressing ½ cup nonfat sour cream 2 tablespoons reduced fat mayo 2 tablespoons fat free buttermilk 1 tablespoon lemon juice ½ teaspoon pepper ¾ teaspoon onion powder ½ half teaspoon garlic powder 2 green onions, diced

Note: you can increase or decrease pepper, onion, garlic to taste Mix well. Store in refrigerator until needed. Will keep a week to 10 days.

Chicken Lettuce Cups 1/3 cup lime juice 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons fish sauce (this is with the Asian foods and you can substitute another flavoring such as chili sauce) 2 tablespoons honey 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 red onion, diced 3 green onions, thinly sliced 1 and 1/2 pounds ground chicken or turkey Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint 1 head lettuce

Saute onions in oil. Add meat and cook until done, about 5 minutes. Add other ingredients except for lettuce leaves and mint. Stir until heated.

Spoon mixture onto the lettuce leaves and garnish with mint.

Cinco De Mayo Marinade Cue the mariachi music and cook up a homemade fiesta! This can be used on practically any meat or Mexican-style dish. You'll get a great lime and cilantro flavor without overpowering the flavor of the meat.

1/3 cup cider vinegar 1/3 cup white vinegar 1/3 cup olive oil 1/3 cup fresh cilantro, chopped 6 cloves garlic, minced juice of 1 lime 2 tablespoons cumin 1 tablespoon pepper 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon salt

Combine all ingredients and mix well. This marinade works best when made a day in advance so the flavors can blend. Marinate beef and pork for about 6 hours, poultry for 4 hours and fish for 1 hour.

Chocolate Topping 1 cup dark chocolate chips 1/3 cup whipping cream

Combine and microwave or heat on range until chocolate is melted. Pour over top of fudge or driz-

Peanut Butter Fudge with Dark Chocolate Topping 4 cups sugar 1 cup milk ½ cup butter 1 (7 oz) jar marshmallow crème 12 oz peanut butter 2/3 cup all-purpose flour

Grease a 9-x13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Combine sugar, milk, and butter. Bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the marshmallow crème and peanut butter.

Slowly stir in the flour. Beat well. Spread into the prepared pan and let cool. You may serve it at this point or add chocolate topping below. Cut into very small pieces to serve.

Disaster preparedness: Hurricanes, tornadoes, fires…oh my!

In southern Alabama, we continue to face the threat of hurricanes until the weather takes a true turn for the cold. But other disasters threaten on a less-seasonal basis, and preparation is the name of the game. Many think that living in this area for extended amounts of time has taught them to keep water and canned goods ready, but MREs barely scratch the surface.

Potential disasters include: hurricane, tornado (often resulting from hurricanes), flood, thunder/lightening, hazardous material (such as poison or toxic gas), carbon monoxide, fire, pandemic flu, animal-related injury, machine-related injury, extreme heat/cold and mass trauma events (such as explosions).

The most important step in preparing for any manner of disaster is to know your family’s needs and know your surroundings.

“Are You Ready?,” a booklet published by the Alabama Department of Public Health, gives tips to help families develop plans for particular situations.

In all emergencies, these steps are imperative, according to the booklet.

Step 1. Stay informed.

Step 2. Learn about basic injury and disease prevention.

Step 3. Look for the most current information on emergency preparedness.

Step 4. Create a family preparedness plan and emergency supply kit.

Step 5. Become familiar with the emergency plans of your community.

Booklets are available for pickup at the front desk of the Foley Onlooker office, located at 217 N. McKenzie St. in Foley (across from Heritage Park).

“Are You Ready?” supplies information on creating a family plan, evacuation, sheltering-in-place, designated-emergency shelters, special-populations and medical-needs shelters.

Also, and a most important section of the booklet, is information on important documents. It lists what documents to copy and store in your emergency kit, especially when evacuation calls for you to leave your home. Police won’t allow re-entry without proof of residence.

An emergency-supply kit check list helps you easily gather supplies. It offers suggestions such as flashlights, radio, non-electric can opener and cash.

The disaster preparedness checklist asks that you review your contact list, and inform out-of-town contacts of your location, in case local communications fail. It also asks that you prepare your car, utilities, etc.

The section on disease prevention and control gives helpful tips for families, especially when government aid may not be available. For example, covering sneezes and coughs, as well as staying six feet

away from others during an outbreak, can lessen disease spreading until control is regained.

The next section explains the pandemic flu’s effects and history.

The booklet also suggests that individuals educate themselves on employer or church Continuity of Operations Plans.

The back section of the booklet takes each possible disaster, and offers facts, dangers/threats, symptoms and protective tips. It offers injury prevention advice for utility hazards; animals, mosquitoes and snakes; chain saw incidents and food/water contamination.

Finally, the Coping with Disasters section lists emotional, cognitive and physical effects associated with disasters. The reality is that most emergency preparation deals with common sense. We may take light of situations because they seem easily adverted, but the very nature of an emergency often causes feelings of panic, shock and terror. When these emotions take hold, even the simplest tasks become difficult. Studying preparedness will help offset emotional responses, and checklists will save you from the stress of calling on memory, alone.

This section also offers information on emergencypreparedness teams, and important phone numbers and websites. The last page offers a blank emergency contact list, so that you can list family-member information, neighbor and out-of-town contacts, shelter, police and utility information.

1-Typhoon Wanda struck Hong Kong, killing 134 people and injuring more than 200. -In a referendum in Singapore, voters overwhelmingly supported a proposition to merge with the Malayan Federation to become part of Malaysia, with limited autonomy. Out of 561,559 ballots cast, there were 397,626 in favor of making all Singapore residents Malaysian citizens, while allowing independence in matters of labor and education. Another 144,077 ballots were left blank as a protest.

2-All non-military air travel in the United States and Canada was halted for five hours as part of “Exercise Sky Shield III.” -The Soviet Union announced that it has signed an agreement on military and industrial assistance with Cuba, following an August meeting in Yalta between Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev and Cuban Economics Minister Che Guevara. Died: William R. Blair, Irishborn American physicist and inventor, most famous for the 1937 creation of the “Object Locating System” better known as radar. He was not allowed to apply for a patent until after World War II, and granted U.S. Patent No. 2,803,819 five years before his death.

3-Died: E. E. Cummings, 67, American poet and author, following a cerebral hemorrhage the night before. Edward Elstin Cummings had written his last words the afternoon before, about delphinium flowers, chopped some wood, sharpened the axe, then collapsed in his home.; and Franz Schrönghamer-Heimdal, 81, German Catholic, Nazi, and anti-Semitic author.

4-The Beatles made their first recording of a song that would become a hit single, “Love Me Do,” though it would become only their fourth, number one song in the United States, in 1964. -

The closing ceremony of the 1962 Asian Games was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, following an attack on India's embassy by 1,000 rioters. Earlier, Asian Games Federation Vice-President G. D. Sondhi had announced that he was seeking to have the executive council declare that the competition was not part of the name “Asian Games,” because AGF members Israel and Nationalist China (Taiwan) had had their teams excluded.

5-Sputnik 4, a Soviet mockup of a manned spaceship, fell out of orbit after 843 days, having been launched on May 15, 1960. What was believed to be a 20 pound fragment landed at the intersection of North 8th Street and Park Street in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, which was along the path where the craft disintegration took place. –“Cedar Hill”, the home of Frederick Douglass, located at 1411 W. Street S.E. in Washington, D.C., was acquired by the U.S. National Park Service and became "the first black national historic site". On the same date, Park Service acquired "Glenmont", the home (and laboratory) or Thomas Edison in West Orange, New Jersey. -The composition of the American penny was changed to 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc, which remained until 1982, when pennies became 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5percent copper.

7-Died: Karen Blixen, 77, Danish author known by her pen name of Isak Dinesen. As Dinesen, she wrote the memoir Out of Africa in 1937, which would become the basis for the 1985 film of the same name; Morris Louis, 49, American painter.

9-“Pravda,” the Soviet Communist Party newspaper, published the article “Plans, Profits, and Bonuses,” by economics professor Evsei Liberman of the Kharkiv National University of Economics, as the Communist Party introduced discussion of new policies that would become a reality in the 1965 Soviet economic reform.

Liberman's proposal was to depart from the Communist system, of measuring factory efficiency by whether a pre-set production quota had been met, and judging performance instead by the amount of the factories' profit, with the goal of increasing the quality and quantity of products. Born: Liza Marklund, Swedish journalist and crime writer, in Pålmark; and Jack Trudeau, American football player and radio presenter, in Forest Lake, Minnesota. Died: Paavo Aaltonen, 42, Finnish gymnast and a three-time Olympic champion.

10- Speaking for the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Hugo Black halted further stays against enforcement of a lower court decision, and ordered the immediate admission of James Meredith as the first African-American student at the thensegregated University of Mississippi. Black wrote that the enrollment of Meredith as a student “can do no appreciable harm to the university.”

11-Cuban Missile Crisis: The Soviet Union publicly warned that a U.S. attack on Cuba, or on Soviet ships carrying supplies to the island, would mean war. In a statement read at the Foreign Office in Moscow, the government declared “One cannot now attack Cuba and expect that the aggressor will be free from punishment for this attack. If such an attack is made, this will be the beginning of unleashing war... which might plunge the world into the disaster of a universal world war with the use of thermonuclear weapons.” -Thurgood Marshall was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, 353 days after he had been nominated, by a vote of 56-14.

Marshall, an African-American who had argued the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education, and who would later be elevated to the U.S. Supreme Court, had been serving for 11 months after President Kennedy had made an appointment, subject to Senate approval, while Congress was not in session. -Died: Robert Soblen, 61, American spy, after overdosing on barbiturates while awaiting extradition from the United Kingdom.

12-President John F. Kennedy, in a speech at the football stadium of Rice University in Houston, reaffirmed that the U.S. would put a man on the Moon by the end of the decade. On hand were 40,000 people, mostly students. Kennedy had declared, on May 25, 1961, his belief that the

nation should commit to a manned moon landing, which would be achieved on July 20, 1969.

13-Governor of Mississippi Ross Barnett delivered a 20 minute address on statewide television and radio to urge state officials not to obey the federal court order to integrate the University of Mississippi, signing a legal document to implement the legal doctrine of interposition, whereby state law superseded a contrary federal government action. The Governor declared, “We will not drink from the cup of genocide. There is no case in history where the Caucasian race has survived integration.” Barnett then made a proclamation, saying “I hereby direct each official to uphold and enforce the laws duly and legally enacted by the legislature of the State of Mississippi, regardless of this unwarranted, illegal and arbitrary usurpation of power,” and added, “There is no cause which is more moral and just than the protection of the integrity of our races.”

14-Died: William Lindsay Gresham, 53, American novelist and non-fiction author, by suicide.

15-Cuban Missile Crisis: The first Soviet medium-range missiles were deployed in Cuba, a week after their arrival. On the same day, American electronic intelligence detected that Soviet high-altitude surface-to-air missiles had become operational. 16-The first semiconductor laser began operation, using a gallium arsenide compound. The initial test was done by Gunter Fenner at the General Electric Research Laboratory in Schenectady, New York.

17-Nine new American astronauts, officially members of NASA Astronaut Group 2, were introduced at a press conference in Houston. The “New Nine” were Neil Armstrong, Frank Borman, Pete Conrad, Jim Lovell, James McDivitt, Elliot See, Thomas P. Stafford, Edward H. White and John W. Young. Armstrong would become the first man to walk on the Moon (Conrad would be third and Young ninth). Borman and Lovell would orbit the Moon; White would be the first American to “walk in space” but would die in the fire of Apollo 1, and See would die in a plane crash before he could be launched into space. BBC Wales Today was broadcast for the first time. As of September 17, 2012, it will have been on the air for fifty years as one of the world's longest-running daily television news programs.

18-U.S. Marine Corps helicopters flew a combat mission from Da Nang, South Vietnam, for the first time, airlifting South Vietnamese troops into the hills south of Da Nang. -Died: Therese Neumann, 64, German Catholic mystic and stigmatic. Her followers said that she had inedia, the abilityy to survive without food, and that she had stopped eating in 1926.

19-Cuban Missile Crisis: The United States Intelligence Board reviewed all available data on arms shipments to Cuba, and reported to President Kennedy that there was no basis for speculation that nuclear missiles would be placed there. -The first episode of The Virginian, starring James Drury in the title role (the character's real name was never revealed), was shown on NBC as the first 90-minute weekly TV series.

It would run nine seasons, ending in 1971.

23-The Jetsons –George, Jane, Judy and Elroy—were introduced in a primetime cartoon of the same name at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time on the ABC television network. Despite having only 24 episodes, the science fiction show, about a family living about 100 years in the future, would be rerun for 23 years until new episodes were commissioned for a syndicated revival in 1985. -The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, including its modern Philharmonic Hall, later Avery Fisher Hall, opened in New York City. The inaugural concert, which was televised live on CBS, featured Leonard Bernstein, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and a host of operatic stars such as Eileen Farrell and Robert Merrill. - Unbeknownst to the world, Pope John XXIII was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer; he would pass away on June 3, 1963. - The Soviet Union Council of Ministers approved the

development of the Global Rocket 1 (GR-1) missile, with the goal of a weapon with a range of 20,000 kilometers or 12,500 miles, capable of hitting a target anywhere on Earth. The project was cancelled in 1964 in favor of the R-36 orbiting missile, designated as the SS-18 by NATO. 25- Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson fought for the world heavyweight boxing title in Chicago. Liston made history by being the first man ever to knock out a reigning heavyweight champion in the first round, downing the titleholder in 2 minutes and 6 seconds.

26-The Beverly Hillbillies, a television situation comedy about a poor Ozark Mountains family who became multi-millionaires after oil was found on their land, began a nine-year run on the CBS network, with the first episode premiering at 9 p.m. Eastern time. Within three weeks, it was the most-watched series on American television, and stayed at number one in its first two seasons. The show had 274 episodes, with the final one broadcast on March 23, 1971.

27-Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was released, giving rise to the modern environmentalist movement. -The 25th Canadian Parliament opened its first and only session, adjourning on February 6, 1963.

Generations working in harmony: Managing the mix

BY JESSICA JONES With four generations in the workplace, misunderstandings, miscommunications, or lack of communication can cause stress for all ages. As retirement happens later, older generations remain at work, while college graduates and interns fill entry-level positions. The differences in mindset are vast, but bridging gaps and using the best everyone has to offer, is key in team building.

During the Alabama Governor’s Conference on Tourism, Karen McCullough explained that steps in the right direction include awareness, acceptance, appreciation and action.

First, she explained each generation’s parameters: the good, bad and the useful.

Traditionalists, born before 1946, came out of the Depression, she divulged.

“There were only two knobs—the stove and the radio.”

“They took us out of WWII,” she began. “They believed in family values, where fathers ruled.”

“They were a generation of phrases, like ‘a penny saved is a penny earned.’ And there was never a generation so loyal, full of patriotism and traditions.”

She said that Traditionalists must self-discipline.

“People are living longer,” she admitted. “And 400 percent more people are turning 100; people are retiring and starting whole new careers.”

“It’s amazing that there’s another whole life out there—so they better learn to text! Are you never going to talk to your grandkids again? You’ve got to stay in the game.”

McCullough hopes that older generations will find a way to accept progress.

“Each generation changes the rules—this is the right of passage.”

Baby Boomers were born during 1946-1964.

“Madonna just turned 54!” she mused, eye brows raised and shaking her head.

She said that this group has remained in power for many years, and they saw few changes in technology during their tentative years.

Her advice for this age group: “You’ve got to step aside; become the trusted advisor.”

“You don’t have to quit—move into a mentorship…move over and give someone else a turn,” she said.

As a Baby Boomer herself, McCullough recalled the transition from hippie to Republican.

“We were success-driven—we made lots of money because of our work mentality. The hippie became successful. And there were lots of babies on the scene, so lots of competition. Children were ‘seen and not heard’ and we couldn’t wait to get out of there.”

She said that very struggle helped build successful-business people.

“The reason that we worked is that we wanted our independence and our own money,” she divulged.

“Because there was something worthwhile at the end.”

She said she hopes this group will begin telling their stories to the next generation so those gems aren’t lost, but that it’s important to bypass lecturing, and tell it in a funny way.

Which brings us to the intended recipients: the children of Baby Boomers are Generation X, born 1965-1978.

“This is the Brady Bunch generation, and it’s more diverse,” she began. “The Baby Boomer mom goes off to work.”

“I remember I was in real estate—buying chandelier earrings and shoulder pads!”

McCullough said there were no daycares and folks couldn’t afford baby sitters, so they left the kids at home.

“These were the latch-key kids, so they’re independent. The 11-12 year old is in charge. Mom calls you up, no afterschool activities because you have to go home. ‘Only answer my calls, plug in the crockpot, get siblings to do homework.’”

She added that this group made their own mixed tapes, and gave them to their friends; thus began the concept of sharing.

“They loved their movies: “16 Candles,” “The Breakfast Club”…this generation had made a technology change.”

“There was no room for you in the workplace, so we called you slackers.”

Then comes Generation Y, the folks around age 18

“They’re all different. Every year is more different, and more challenging.”

“They feel a strong entitlement,” McCullough chuckled.

“They say, ‘We want the world to be better, so they share slides, articles…’ They work 9:30-5, and I’m still there working!”

“In the world today, there are so many ways to be productive.”

The computer offered a way to not count on others—use Google, work from home…, she explained She added that younger generations love their friends and actually ask for their help if they’re moving or need a ride to the airport.

She explained that the biggest change we face is social values.

“Remember, they don’t know how you want it, because they don’t have your experiences,” she explained. “In your business, people are not answering the phone at all—you have to teach people to use the phone.”

“I sent an email, didn’t anyone get it?”

Those born in 1980 and after, were born with cell phones, she said. With children talking more to other children than adults, manners wane because accountability vanishes.

“Instead of one phone in the kitchen, they’re sneaking calls at midnight.”

She offered some advice to help reel this generation into successful-career mindset. McCullough said that businesses might need to offer etiquette classes and orientation into culture.

“They want to succeed; they just don’t know the rules. They may lack social skills, but will know how to use technology.”

She said these “Can-Do Kids” want feedback and want friends at work. They may also be impatient, because technology has taught them instant gratification.

“My son finally came to me and said, ‘Mom, the Karen show is over—it’s my show.’ Now he comes to me for business advice.”

She said Generation X sat in umbrella strollers, then Oprah taught how to be a better mother, so Generation Y got big leather strollers and, “You can be anything you want to be when you grow up.”

“The child thought, ‘All these adults are there for me,’” McCullough said with a smile.

She also explained that this generation has dealt with the recession and is really good at shopping deals. They shop sites like Groupon and Living Social, then they tell their friends about the deals.

“They have a different mentality.”

She offered some advice on how older generations can embrace younger generations in the workplace: “Think fast. Be creative—you can’t say no all the time. Be transparent—want to talk and know their ideas, and share more. Be optimistic—it’s their time.

Be inclusive—they’ve got to sit at the table. And think equality.”

McCullough said that everyone will benefit if older generations understand that, “Gaps come from the way we were raised, and see that they (younger generations) have other talents, so utilize and tap into them.”

Find relief for fall allergy symptoms and start enjoying the cooler weather Eric Cheung

BY ERIC CHEUNG, M.D. The seasons don’t discriminate when it comes to allergies. For many who suffer from seasonal allergies, fall is the worst time of year. Though the cooler weather is welcomed, the foliage is changing, and weeds and other plants release pollen that can send allergy sufferers indoors. Unfortunately, allergens can lurk there, as well.

While almost 40 million Americans suffer from allergies, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, and there is no cure, allergies can be managed with proper prevention and treatment.

Ragweed pollen is one of the most common triggers for fall allergy symptoms. This hardy plant, is common in the Northeast, South, and Midwest regions of the United States. Peak ragweed season starts in mid-August and lasts through October.

Ragweed pollen can cause oral allergy syndrome.

In OAS, you may experience itching in the mouth and throat, along with mild swelling, after you consume fresh fruits and vegetables such as banana, cucumber, melon and zucchini. This syndrome occurs because proteins in the ragweed pollen and certain fruits or vegetables are similar in structure; therefore, your body has the same reaction to both the ragweed pollen and the food.

In addition to ragweed pollen, pollen from other plants, trees, and grass can set off allergies in the fall. Mold can grow under leaves that have fallen and this can lead to a reaction, too.

Fall Allergy Symptoms: Allergy symptoms can vary, depending on the part of the body exposed to the allergen.

• Skin – hives; dry, itchy skin; eczema • Lungs – wheezing and asthma • Eyes and nose – watery, itchy eyes; clear, runny mucous; sneezing • Mouth – itching in the back of the throat; upset stomach; diarrhea; and, in extreme cases, anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction) Controlling Fall Allergies: Here are a few allergy management tips to help you get back to enjoying life, both inside and outside: • Check pollen levels. If you live in a high pollen zone, limit your time outdoors on high pollen count days.

• Limit yard work. Have someone who is not allergic rake the leaves and mow the lawn, or wear a facemask and goggles if you must do it yourself.

• Don’t hang clothes outdoors to dry. Wet laundry attracts pollen that will eventually end up indoors.

• Stay clean. Minimize allergen exposure by washing pollens off your skin and hair after spending time outside. You should also change your shoes before entering the house and change clothes inside the front door to reduce the amount of pollen and allergens you may bring in the house.

• Use a dehumidifier. Because dust mites and molds flourish in a humid environment, using a dehumidifier to remove some of the humidity from the air inside your home will help reduce indoor allergy symptoms.

• Use hypoallergenic filters. Forget the instructions on the package. Change your air conditioner filters monthly, using HEPA filters, if possible. Always place the used filter in a plastic garbage bag, then dispose of the bag outdoors.

• Use the air conditioner at night. To keep your bedroom clean and pollen free, close the windows and turn on the air conditioning. A HEPA filter system, especially during high pollen season, will help ensure you breathe purified air while you sleep.

• Take an over-the-counter antihistamine. This is an effective step, and fortunately, many OTC allergy drugs are now non-drowsy, long-lasting, and effective.

If seasonal allergy symptoms interfere with your daily life, visit your doctor or an ENT (ear, nose and throat specialist) or allergist who can correctly diagnose your allergy and recommend ways to manage it. An allergy test will help identify the source of your suffering and determine the right treatment to control symptoms.

Treatment may involve medications such as antihistamines, Leukotriene receptor antagonists, steroid nasal sprays, decongestants, or immunotherapy (i.e., allergy shots).

If you're a fall allergy sufferer, there's little reason to dread the arrival of autumn. Knowing how to reduce your exposure to mold and pollen can make all the difference.

Democratic Women’s Club talks abortion amendment, educating voters

BY THERESA CORBIN On the second Thursday of every month, the Democratic Women’s Club (DWC) of Escambia County meets to discuss the political issues that face our country. On the second Thursday of September, the DWC had a lot to discuss—especially in Escambia County, Fla., where there is plenty on the docket for Florida voters to decide.

Rosemary HaysThomas, Ph.D., Co-President of Pensacola League of Women Voters (LWV) spoke to the gathering about Florida’s voting options during the September DWC meeting.

“As the minority party in this area,” said Evalyn Narramore, president of the DWC of Escambia County, “we do have difficulty getting our events publicized.”

But the fact that September’s meeting had a good turnout may be a sign of how important the November vote is to Florida voters.

Up for voter approval in November are seven

amendments to Florida’s constitution. These seven amendments cover issues from religion to revenue.

Amendments like SJR 592 that would give disabled veterans a break on property taxes.

However, other amendments are stirring up controversy statewide, like the proposed abortion amendment.

The hotly debated amendment on the topic of abortion—HJR 1179—asserts that the state constitution will not be interpreted to permit expanded rights for abortions outside of those already establish in the U.S. Constitution. Some Democrats, who conventionally vote to support Roe v. Wade and women’s right to choose, say that this amendment is legal jargon that will allow Florida’s constitution to void women’s rights to privacy as it pertains to abortion.

Some claim that conservative-leaning law makers proposed such amendments in order to fill the poles with Republican voters in November.

September 2012 Boomers 25> “The majority opinion was that we would vote ‘NO’ on all 11 amendments,” Narramore divulged. “I am opposed to the four (ammendments) having to do with tax exemptions because of their negative effect on local budgets and because these issues should be handled via legislation and not be made a permanent part of the Florida Constitution.”

“I am against number six because it is an invasion of women's rights, and against number eight because of the damage it will do to the public school system. Although the DWC did not take a vote on them and we do not have an official position, the great majority of our members are in agreement with the opinions that I stated. It should be noted that all of these amendments were presented by the Florida Legislature and none of them are citizen's initiatives.”

However, others say that these amendments will motivate Democrat voters as well. Democrats and Republicans all around the country are rallying their allies to visit the poles and support the national, state, and local party members. As a minority, and with such significant changes to the state’s constitution up for voter approval, Florida Democrats may be feeling a more acute sense of urgency to inform voters and rally support.

Locally, the DWC of Escambia County has been working hard to have their voice heard.

Narramore, said that the “club has held a very successful candidate forum prior to the primaries; in the spring, we sponsored an event called ‘Mom's Matter’ in which area agencies participated to provide services to young families and children, and were able to educate the public on those services.”

In addition to these activities, Narramore stated that members of the organization “strive to keep ourselves educated on politics and public affairs; this topic (the proposed amend-

ments) closely relates to the goals of the DWC.” And at the DWC meeting, Hays-Thomas was welcomed as someone to share insight on the issues.

“The League has done extensive research on the amendments which are proposed to the Florida Constitution” Narramore explained, and said that Hays-Thomas talked “to us about those findings and the desirability of voting for or against each of them.”

Kean Engie, Publicity Chair of the DWC of Escambia County, recalled that the meeting had a “very lively discussion during this presentation—which lasted over an hour.”

Narramore explained that, “It's difficult to pinpoint one ‘hot button’ issue for this election cycle. Of course, the economy (jobs) is important and we feel that economic recovery has been thwarted by the obstructionist Republican congress. If not for their unwavering opposition, the Obama agenda (including the Jobs bill) would have been successful in aiding a more rapid recovery. As a predominantly women's group, although we have several male members and do not exclude men, we are very interested in women's issues, particularly health issues like illness screening and reproductive freedom. As many of us are middle-age or older, we are very concerned about the preservation of Medicare and the further implementation of ObamaCare in a timely manner.”

As summer wanes and voters prepare to cast their ballot in November, debates become more and more heated. In Florida, it may seem to both Democrats and Republicans, alike, that a lot is at stake in the election. But we can all take a page out of the DWC of Escambia County’s handbook: know the issues before punching the ballot, because an educated populace is the foundation of an effective democracy.

What is heritage worth?

BY RALPH VELLER, CHAIRMAN Baldwin County Heritage Museum Not surprising the answer depends on who is being questioned…much of today’s youthful , hi-tech generation has yet to acquire a sense of heritage. However, pose the same question to one who has been enlightened by life’s experiences over many years, and the worth of heritage would rank overwhelmingly high on the scale.

Why is this important? Because this clash of values is the crux of the significant challenge which the Baldwin County Heritage Museum is faced with today.

BCHM is the story the people who cleared the land, built the towns and wrenched a future for all of us from the swamps and forests of Baldwin County. Theirs is the sacrifice that gave us the life we enjoy in this place today, and we are forever in debt to these pioneers. It is the reason the BCHM exists today, to protect and preserve their story.

BCHM was organized in 1981 as a private non-profit museum with the mission “to preserve the heritage of the family and early farm culture of Baldwin County through the creation of a home for historically significant buildings, artifacts and documents from community life.” Its basic foundations, being Home, Church, School and Community, as it was throughout all of early America. It began as “the people’s museum,” built on their gifts and donations, hard work and unselfish giving of their time. Unlike the current “turf culture” that often divides many in our county and state today; the original museum founders came from all parts of the county to contribute toward developing the concept and laying the groundwork for the BCHM. This passion and effort was carried forward by others over the past 30 years, and resulted in a facility noted for its heritage education and preservation. Noteworthy, is the praise received by all whom have had the opportunity to visit the museum, see its improvement and experience its many interesting exhibits. Future plans are to create an old time working sugar cane syrup shed and a General Store exhibit.

However the BCHM is at a critical juncture. It has survived two significant hurricanes, (Ivan and Katrina), an implosion of our economy with resulting crippling funding cutbacks, the BP Oil Spill and a continuing uncertain lackluster economy and outlook which understandably makes for very conservative spending. It is the effects from the latter that has had the most impact on the museum; both from a financial and an operational standpoint. There has been general acceptance with circles of society that the chances of private museums, such as ours, surviving beyond 30 years is almost zero. In today’s economy, we simply can’t depend on charitable contributions to be the only key for our sustainability. However, in spite of cuts and the slow economy, the museum’s basic operational expense over the past several difficult years has been met and the museum continues to move forward toward serving our public to our best ability.

Although the name, Baldwin County Heritage Museum, results in many to assume that it is operated and

funded totally by the County, to the contrary it has always been a private non-profit 501(c)3 institution, free from the whim of politics and simply dedicated to its mission. And if it is to remain so, which I believe most of us would agree it should, then we need our citizens to step forward now with their financial support be it large or small. However this support must include our business, government, and civic organizations because of the benefits which are derived from the historical and educational largess BCHM provides to its citizens. Additionally, the myriad of activities related to tourism is so important to the business community.

For those who cannot support the museum financially, the giving of your time, if only a few hours a month is also very important. Museum volunteers are needed for everything from greeting the public to maintaining our exhibits, grounds, and restoring our vintage farm equipment. Garden devotees or clubs would be welcome to enhance the beauty of our grounds. “We have the tools, if you have the time and can travel.”

Another generous way to contribute would be to become a member of the museum. A tax free annual donation of $10 for an individual, $15 for a family household or $200 for a individual lifetime membership would greatly help in our effort to build a solid financial foundation and enable BCHM to continue to be a part of Baldwin County’s future and most importantly its children’s future. Museums serve all communities and reach diverse audiences. They are educational providers and community anchors with a greater need today than any time in the past.

The Baldwin County Heritage Museum is not an elaborate place of fine art and antiques, nor does it compare with those great museums or humanitarian institutions which have supporters of wealth who provide large financial endowments in exchange for recognition or other altruistic motives. Rather it is a place much like Grandma and Grandpa’s house where both parents and children can come to learn about and see many of the daily items used by their grandparents or ancestors. It is the safeguard of those things that were a part of so many Baldwin County families, most now lost or unfortunately thrown away, which is the reason BCHM was created and exists today. I should think it is also worthy of an endowment by those whom I trust will someday come forward in support because they also believe it worthy of existence and do not wish it to become what it was setup to preserve...a memory of the past.

Are you prepared for long-term care costs?

Like everyone else, you hope to remain physically and financially independent your entire life. And you may well achieve this goal. Nonetheless, the future is not ours to see, so you’ll want to prepare yourself for as many contingencies as possible — one of which is the high cost of long-term care.

As you may know, long-term care primarily refers to nursing home expenses, but it also includes services provided in your own home. In either case, though, it could be expensive.

The national average rate for a private room in a nursing home was more than $87,000 per year in 2011, according to the 2011 MetLife Market Survey of Long-Term Care Costs. The same survey found that the average private-pay hourly rates for home health aides and homemaker companion services were $21 and $19, respectively.

With luck, of course, you won’t need to worry about these types of expenses. But consider this: People who reach age 65 have a 40-percent chance of entering a nursing home, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. And about 10 percent of those who enter a nursing home will stay there five or more years.

Clearly, if you take no steps to prepare yourself for the potentially devastating costs of an extended nursing home stay, you could be jeopardizing the assets you’ve worked so hard to accumulate. Even worse, if you run through your money, you might end up creating a financial and emotional burden for your grown children.

Unfortunately, many people assume that a federal or state government program will help them pay for their long-term care expenses. However, Medicare pays only a small portion of nursing home costs, and to be eligible for Medicaid, you would likely have to divest yourself of most of your financial assets. Consequently, you’ll probably need to

find another way to pay for long-term care.

Fortunately, there are investment or protection vehicles designed specifically to help you meet longterm care expenses. Your financial advisor can help you pick the option that’s most appropriate for your individual situation.

Having the ability to pay for long-term care is obviously important. But other issues may also enter the picture. For example, if you need to enter a nursing home, you may be suffering from a physical or mental disability that might prevent you from handling your own affairs. This impairment could prove disastrous to your finances — which is why you can’t afford to take that type of chance. Instead, consult with your legal advisor to determine if you can benefit from a durable power of attorney — a document that lets you delegate your financial decisions to a relative, close friend or anyone else you might choose.

None of us like to think about spending time in a nursing home or needing round-the-clock care in our own homes. However, life is unpredictable. But even if you can’t avoid the need for long-term care, you can take steps to help reduce the financial strain it can cause you and your family.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.,The Haven will be holding a “Rescue Me, Love Me” adoption event at the Fairhope WalMart on Highway 181. Available animals will be on site, transported by the Haven’s Mobile Adoption Rescue Unit (MARU).

Many of them have been pulled from local shelters and are ready for their forever homes. The Haven’s compassionate, life-saving team will be on site to help potential adopters find that perfect match and answer any questions they may have in finding that new family member. “This is the first time we’ve held an adoption at this location,” said executive director Mike Graham, “and we’re really excited about it! We’re grateful to WalMart and know we can find great owners for our animals at this location.”

We do offer assistance with re-homing pets, but the pet owner must be able to foster the pet until a fur-ever home can be located. New open-bore MRI at Precision Imaging

Submitted by Precision Imaging Located in the heart of Gulf Shores, Precision Imaging specializes in diagnostic and interventional radiology. The practice, led by board certified radiologist Jason Williams, has provided state-of-the-art medical imaging services to the Gulf Coast area for three years now, offering high resolution, 64-slice CT scans, 3-D Digital Mammography, 3-D/4D Ultrasounds, X-Rays and 3-T Open MRI scans.

Last year, Precision introduced Siemens’ newest 64-slice CT scanner. This scanner produces images up to twice the resolution of standard CT scanners, yet emits the lowest dose of radiation available. The test is automatically calibrated to the patients’ needs.

Now, Precision Imaging has upgraded to a 3T Open-bore MRI, the strongest MRI used clinically today and twice as strong as the average MRI. It provides a level of detail not previously available and is the only one available in Mobile or Baldwin County.

“Accuracy and detection are greatly enhanced; it is important for the image to be crisp and clear,” said Dr. Williams. “This aids in making a correct diagnosis.”

“MRIs provide non-invasive images of soft tissue, bone, fat and muscle and there is no exposure to radiation. This has led to MRIs becoming one of the fastest growing types of medical diagnostic tests in the U.S. When a more advanced MRI unit became available, we wanted to offer it to our patients. Preci-

sion Imaging is committed to providing our patients with the latest and safest technology.

“Another advanced element of our 3T MRI is the exclusive Total imaging matrix technology which makes the exams more efficient and faster.

“And, for the patient, the most notable advance Jason Williams in our new 3T MRI is the comfort factor. It is a large 70cm Open-bore MRI. It’s more comfortable, reducing the anxiety level of the patient, and we can accommodate a wider range of patients regarding size, age and special needs. Actually, there’s enough space in our new 3T MRI to fit more than 3 people!”
